<p>For a long time, the Stone Age has been painted in narrow strokes. Men hunted with stone tools, women cooked. and children watched. This idea shaped research, museum displays, even the way skeletons were identified. But the ground in Latvia is telling a very different story.</p>



<p>At Zvejnieki, one of Europe’s largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/">Stone Age</a> cemeteries, archaeologists have found that tools buried with the dead were not just men’s possessions. Women had them too, so did children. </p>



<p>The way these objects were placed in graves shows they carried meaning far beyond daily work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-graves-and-stone-tools">Ancient graves and stone tools</h2>



<p>Zvejnieki sits near Lake Burtnieks. The site has more than 330 graves, spanning over 5,000 years. Excavations began in the 1960s and continued for decades. </p>



<p>Thousands of ornaments made from animal teeth and amber came out of the ground. Red ochre stained the soil around many skeletons. These details have been studied again and again.</p>



<p>But stone tools? They were mostly ignored. Archaeologists thought of them as practical. Not decorative or symbolic. Just leftovers of everyday survival. That view collapsed once Dr. Aimée Little and her team returned with new tools of their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-closer-at-stone">Looking closer at stone</h2>



<p>The Stone Dead Project used microscopes to search for tiny traces on the artifacts. The team studied how each tool was made, used, and finally placed in graves. </p>



<p>The results surprised everyone. Some scrapers showed wear from working animal hides. Others looked fresh, almost untouched, as if they had been created only for burial. And many were broken on purpose before being laid to rest.</p>



<p>These details reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-traveled-long-distances-to-find-colorful-stones-for-tools/">stone</a> tools were not only about survival. They were part of rituals. Part of how people said goodbye. Part of how they thought about life and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-in-all-graves">Tools in all graves</h2>



<p>The discoveries challenged long-standing ideas about gender. Women were just as likely, sometimes even more likely, to be buried with stone artifacts. Children and older adults received them too. </p>



<p>That makes the picture clear: these objects were not reserved for hunters. They belonged to everyone.</p>



<p>“Our findings overturn the old stereotype of ‘Man the Hunter’ which has been a dominant theme in Stone Age studies, and has even influenced, on occasion, how some infants have even been sexed, on the basis that they were given lithic tools,” noted Dr. Little.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-traditions-over-time">Changing traditions over time</h2>



<p>Burial practices at Zvejnieki shifted. In earlier centuries, tools were rare in graves. Later, by the 4th millennium BC, deposits grew larger. Some people were buried with dozens of flint artefacts. Many had never been used. Their role was clearly symbolic.</p>



<p>This change matched wider cultural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">shifts</a> across the Baltic. Communities began to use more red ochre. They buried people collectively. Clay death masks appeared. The inclusion of flint tools fit into this wider move toward more elaborate rituals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-tools-reveal">What the tools reveal</h2>



<p>Micro-wear analysis showed patterns that mattered. Scrapers often carried traces of hide working, suggesting that preparing skins was a valued activity even in death. </p>



<p>Bone and butchery marks appeared on some pieces. Mineral traces, connected to ochre, turned up only in female burials. That detail hints at gender-specific ritual roles.</p>



<p>Bifacial points - long seen as hunting weapons - often showed no use at all. They were made, broken, and buried. Their meaning was symbolic, not practical. Destroying them may have been part of letting go, part of a shared tradition that stretched beyond one community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-graves-with-stone-tools">Special graves with stone tools</h2>



<p>Some graves stood out. An older child was buried with more than 40 tools, many unused, alongside ornaments of amber and animal teeth.</p>



<p>Another grave, belonging to a young woman, contained primary deposits with her body and additional offerings at her feet. These were not random choices. They were deliberate acts, full of meaning for the people who stood around the grave.</p>



<p>These burials show that women and children were not peripheral. They stood at the center of ritual traditions. Their graves carried messages for the living.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-old-assumptions">Breaking old assumptions</h2>



<p>The implications are clear. Tools in Stone Age burials were not simply for men. They were symbols for everyone - men, women, children, and elders. They carried social meaning and were part of rituals that bound communities together in the face of loss.</p>



<p>“This research demonstrates that we cannot make these gendered assumptions and that lithic grave goods played an important role in the mourning rituals of children and women, as well as men,” noted Dr. Anđa Petrović, from the <a href="https://www.bg.ac.rs/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Belgrade</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-matters-today">Why it matters today</h2>



<p>What might look like simple flint flakes turn out to be keys to identity, memory, and ritual. They tell us that Stone Age communities valued more than hunting. They cared about symbolism. They cared about honoring all their members.</p>



<p>“The study highlights how much more there is to learn about the lives - and deaths - of Europe’s earliest communities, and why even the seemingly simplest objects can unlock insights about our shared human past and how people responded to death,” said Dr. Little.</p>



<p>The study shows that re-examining overlooked artifacts can transform our understanding of the past. At Zvejnieki, stone tools are no longer just tools. They are stories carved in flint, carrying the voices of communities that lived, grieved, and remembered.</p>

<p>Have you ever felt stuck in a loop, repeating the same sequence of events over and over again? Like Bill Murray in the movie&nbsp;<em>Groundhog Day</em>, bacteria in Wisconsin’s Lake Mendota appear stuck in a perpetual cycle - but in this case, it’s more aptly described as a "Groundhog Year."</p>



<p>According to a study published in the journal <em>Nature Microbiology</em>, scientists observed that most bacterial species in the lake undergo rapid genetic changes over a year, only to return to near-identical genetic states the next year.</p>



<p>This cyclical evolution offers new insights into microbial ecology and how organisms adapt to their environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-cycles-of-lake-bacteria">Evolutionary cycles of lake bacteria</h2>



<p>Lake Mendota’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-walking-ecosystems-and-microbes-rule-their-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial species</a> evolve rapidly in response to the lake’s dramatic seasonal changes. Winters cover the lake in ice, while summers foster algal blooms.</p>



<p>These environmental shifts allow specific bacterial strains to dominate during one season - only to give way to others that are better suited for different conditions at another time of year. This seasonal loop plays out year after year, and creates a pattern akin to rewinding and replaying a movie.</p>



<p>“I was surprised that such a large portion of the bacterial community was undergoing this type of change,” said Robin Rohwer, the study’s lead researcher and a postdoctoral scientist at <a href="https://www.utexas.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Texas Austin</a>.</p>



<p>“I was hoping to observe just a couple of cool examples, but there were literally hundreds.”</p>



<p>Rohwer began this work during her doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Trina McMahon, and continued the research at UT Austin. The study marks a breakthrough in understanding the adaptations of Lake Mendota's bacteria under natural, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-laid-the-foundation-for-early-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dynamic conditions</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-archive-of-bacterial-dna">Unique archive of bacterial DNA</h2>



<p>The researchers used an unprecedented dataset: 471 water samples collected over 20 years by <a href="https://www.wisc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UW-Madison</a> scientists as part of <a href="https://www.nsf.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Science Foundation</a>-funded monitoring projects. </p>



<p>These samples provided the longest metagenome time series ever collected from a natural system. By reconstructing bacterial genomes from fragmented DNA, the team mapped genetic changes across generations.</p>



<p>“This study is a total game changer in our understanding of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistance-could-cause-a-health-crisis-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial communities</a> change over time,” said Brett Baker, a co-author and researcher at UT Austin. “This is just the beginning of what these data will tell us about microbial ecology and evolution in nature.”</p>



<p>The work revealed not just seasonal cycles but also longer-lasting genetic shifts. For example, during 2012’s unusually hot and dry summer, when algal levels were low, many bacterial species underwent significant changes in genes related to nitrogen metabolism.</p>



<p>This suggests that environmental extremes can drive sustained evolutionary adaptations in lake bacteria.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-climate-change">Implications for climate change</h2>



<p>Climate models predict more frequent extreme weather events for the Midwestern U.S., similar to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-use-biological-clocks-to-predict-and-survive-cold-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conditions</a> seen at Lake Mendota in 2012 .</p>



<p>Rohwer believes this study offers a window into how microbial communities might respond to both gradual and abrupt climate changes.</p>



<p>“Climate change is slowly shifting the seasons and average temperatures, but also causing more abrupt, extreme weather events,” said Rohwer. “Our study suggests they will evolve in response to both these gradual and abrupt changes.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-technological-innovations-in-genomic-research">Technological innovations in genomic research</h2>



<p>The team relied on the <a href="https://tacc.utexas.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas Advanced Computing Center</a>’s supercomputing resources to reconstruct over 30,000 genomes from roughly 2,800 species. Without such technology, the analysis of the Lake's bacteria would have taken 34 years on a standard laptop.</p>



<p>“Imagine each species’ genome is a book, and each little DNA fragment is a sentence,” Rohwer explained. </p>



<p>“Each sample has hundreds of books, all cut up into these sentences. To reassemble each book, you have to figure out which book each sentence came from and put them back together in order.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lake-bacteria-reveal-nature-s-complexity"> Lake bacteria reveal nature’s complexity</h2>



<p>The study on the evolution of Lake Mendota bacteria  highlights the intricate and resilient nature of microbial communities. </p>



<p>While their short lifespans allow for rapid evolution, these bacteria also demonstrate remarkable stability, repeatedly returning to near-original states despite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/living-microbes-discovered-in-2-billion-year-old-rocks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental pressures</a>. </p>



<p>This discovery highlights the complexity of microbial ecology and its role in broader environmental systems.</p>



<p>As climate change continues to alter ecosystems, studies like this provide vital insights into how life adapts. They also emphasize the importance of long-term monitoring and advanced computational tools in uncovering the secrets of the natural world.</p>

<p>This small but mighty innovation, developed by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, promises faster and more accurate diagnostics and paves the way for a new era in healthcare.</p>

<p>The researchers at <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Riverside</a> have meticulously crafted a diagnostic tool based on nanopore technology. This innovation uses electrical signals from individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-molecule-discovery-will-force-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">molecules</a> to identify diseases.</p>



<p>The delicacy of this operation lies in the minute size of these molecules, which are generally certain DNA or protein molecules, approximately one-billionth of a meter wide.</p>



<p>The breakthrough, according to Kevin Freedman, assistant professor of bioengineering at UCR, is the ability to "get useful data from just a single molecule."</p>



<p>“This level of sensitivity could make a real difference in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-diagnose-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disease diagnostics</a>,” he added. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-gateway-for-molecules-to-pass">A gateway for molecules to pass</h2>



<p>To capture the faint whispers of these minute molecules, Freedman's lab designed electronic detectors that emulate neurons in the brain by retaining "memories" of molecules that had previously passed through.</p>



<p>A nanopore, which is an extremely tiny opening, is the circuit's star player. It serves as a gateway for the molecules to pass, one at a time.</p>



<p>The sophisticated detector registers the reduction in the flow of ions due to the passage of a protein or DNA molecule.</p>



<p>This is not merely a detection process. The special feature of this model is the role of the nanopore not just as a sensor but also as an inherent filter. </p>



<p>It reduces the background noise from other molecules, thus enhancing the signal clarity and maintaining the accuracy of diagnosis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-promise-of-early-detection">The promise of early detection</h2>



<p>Imagine a small diagnostic kit, no larger than a USB drive, that could help detect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotics-for-childhood-infections-are-becoming-ineffective/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infections</a> in their budding stage. This reality isn't far off.</p>



<p>Freedman projects that nanopore sensors could detect infections within 24 to 48 hours, in contrast to today's tests that often require several days. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-blood-test-diagnoses-heart-attacks-in-minutes-not-hours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Early detection</a> could be pivotal, especially in rapidly spreading diseases, and enable timely intervention and treatment.</p>



<p>“Nanopores offer a way to catch infections sooner - before symptoms appear and before the disease spreads,” said Freedman.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-detection-the-footprints-of-proteins">Beyond detection: The footprints of proteins</h2>



<p>The tool's potential isn't limited to diagnostics. Proteins, the building blocks of life, sometimes exhibit minute changes in their structure, which can have significant implications for health.</p>

<p>This nanopore technology also brings researchers a step closer to a biology holy grail: single molecule protein <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/complete-sequencing-of-the-human-genome-reveals-new-findings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sequencing</a>. </p>



<p>Unlike DNA sequencing, which reveals genetic instructions, protein sequencing provides a more profound understanding of how those instructions are expressed and modified in real time. </p>



<p>"There's a lot of momentum toward developing protein sequencing because it will give us insights we can’t get from DNA alone," Freedman said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nanopores-the-future-is-here">Nanopores: The future is here</h2>



<p>The evolution of this technology doesn't stop here. Freedman sees this as a signpost to how the future of biological research and diagnostics may look. </p>

<p>In the quest for personalized medicine, this tool propels us one step closer. “I’m confident that nanopores will become part of everyday life,” Freedman said. “This discovery could change how we’ll use them moving forward.”</p>

<p>As we age, our cells age too. This means that decoding the mystery of cellular aging could be the ultimate secret to unlocking a longer human lifespan. </p>



<p>The journey of a scientific team from <a href="https://weill.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Weill Cornell Medicine</a> takes us through the complex world of cell aging, specifically focusing on a dense part of the cell nucleus called the nucleolus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-the-nucleolus">The role of the nucleolus</h2>



<p>What is the nucleolus and why is it important?</p>



<p>The nucleolus is a dense, spherical region found in a cell's nucleus. It houses the ribosomal DNA (rDNA), which is a segment of DNA that codes for the core parts of ribosomes. </p>



<p>Ribosomes are tiny organelles, found inside cells, that help to make proteins. Ribosomal DNA is one of the most vulnerable parts of the genome due to its repetitive composition, which makes it complicated to maintain or repair when damaged.</p>



<p>In the course of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-transfer-longevity-gene-hoping-to-extend-human-lifespan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lifespan</a>, organisms ranging from yeast to humans undergo an expansion in the size of their nucleoli.</p>



<p>One fascinating observation is that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-anti-aging-drug-interleukin-11-boosts-lifespan-prevents-cancer-gray-hair/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anti-aging</a> strategies, such as consuming fewer calories, result in the presence of smaller nucleoli in cells.</p>



<p>This begs the question - could keeping the nucleolus small be the key to delaying aging?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-resetting-the-aging-clock">Resetting the aging clock</h2>



<p>Dr. J. Ignacio Gutierrez and Dr. Jessica Tyler, the study's lead investigators, suggested that deliberately keeping nucleoli small might help <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-cells-could-be-used-to-slow-down-or-even-reverse-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">slow down aging</a>.</p>



<p>The experts tested this idea by engineering a method to attach the rDNA to the membrane of yeast cell nuclei. This innovative system gave them the ability to control the size of the nucleolus.</p>



<p>The result? Keeping the nucleolus compact appeared to delay aging to a similar extent as the calorie restriction strategy. </p>



<p>This discovery hints at the possibility that the nucleolus could indeed play a significant role in manipulating the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-counting-down-the-cellular-lifespan">Counting down: The cellular lifespan</h2>



<p>Another intriguing observation was that nucleoli did not expand at a uniform rate throughout a cell's lifespan. </p>



<p>Instead, the nucleoli remained small for most of the cell's life until they suddenly began growing rapidly at a specific size threshold. Cells only persisted for an average of about five more divisions after crossing this threshold.</p>



<p>Deterioration and damage to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-and-bakers-yeast-have-similar-dna/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA</a> occur as part of the aging process. In testing, the research team discovered that the larger nucleoli had less stable rDNA than the smaller ones.</p>



<p>Furthermore, when the nucleolus grew, it started allowing in proteins and other factors that could potentially harm the fragile rDNA.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aging-insights-from-yeast-to-humans">Aging insights from yeast to humans</h2>

<p>The study, led by Dr. Rebecca Solch-Ottaiano, found that the Mediterranean diet alters gut bacteria patterns in ways that boost memory and cognitive skills.</p>



<p>“We’ve known that what we eat affects brain function, but this study explores how that could be happening,” Dr. Solch-Ottaiano explained. “Our findings suggest that dietary choices can influence cognitive performance by reshaping the gut microbiome.”</p>

<p>Using young rats as subjects, the researchers compared the effects of a Mediterranean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mediterranean-diet-keeps-the-brain-sharp-even-in-old-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a> to a typical Western diet over 14 weeks. </p>



<p>The Mediterranean diet, rich in olive oil, fish, and fiber, led to significant shifts in gut bacteria. Four types of beneficial bacteria increased, while five types linked to poorer memory declined. </p>



<p>These shifts in gut bacteria correlated with key cognitive and health improvements in the Mediterranean diet group:</p>

<p>The study pinpointed specific bacteria - such as higher levels of <em>Candidatus Saccharimonas</em> - that correlated with better cognitive outcomes. Conversely, higher levels of <em>Bifidobacterium</em> were linked to poorer memory.</p>

<p>This research is the first to examine the Mediterranean diet’s impact on gut microbiota and cognitive function relative to the Western diet in a rodent model. </p>



<p>By using young rats, equivalent to 18-year-old humans, the study highlights how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ditch-the-diet-trends-for-a-healthier-relationship-with-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dietary choices</a> during critical developmental periods can influence long-term brain health.</p>



<p>“Our findings suggest that the Mediterranean diet or its biological effects could be harnessed to improve scholastic performance in adolescents, or work performance in young adults,” said Dr. Demetrius M. Maraganore. </p>



<p>“While these findings are based on animal models, they echo human studies linking the Mediterranean diet to improved memory and reduced dementia risk.”</p>

<p>Leo Speidel, the study’s first author, emphasized the significance of this innovation. “Twigstats allows us to see what we couldn’t before, in this case migrations all across Europe originating in the north of Europe in the Iron Age, and then back into Scandinavia before the Viking Age.”</p>



<p>By applying this tool to over 1,500 genomes from individuals who lived between the years 1 and 1000 AD, the researchers reconstructed migration patterns spanning key historical periods, including the Iron Age, the fall of the Roman Empire, the early medieval Migration Period, and the Viking Age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-migrations-into-southern-europe-nbsp">Human migrations into Southern Europe&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Historical records from the Roman Empire mention conflicts with Germanic groups beyond its borders. </p>



<p>The genetic evidence uncovered by Twigstats supports these accounts, revealing waves of migration from Northern Germany and Scandinavia into Southern Europe during the early first millennium.</p>



<p>This migration left its mark on the genetic makeup of regions such as southern Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, and southern Britain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An unexpected discovery was the presence of Scandinavian ancestry in Britain centuries before the Viking Age.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers identified a second-to-fourth-century individual from York who exhibited 25% early Iron Age Scandinavian ancestry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This predates the Anglo-Saxon and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vikings-landed-in-the-americas-500-years-before-columbus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Viking</a> migrations traditionally associated with Scandinavian influence in Britain. The finding highlights the long-standing connections between Scandinavia and the British Isles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-migrations-into-scandinavia">Human migrations into Scandinavia</h2>



<p>The study also uncovered a later migration wave into Scandinavia between 300 and 800 AD, preceding the Viking Age. </p>



<p>Genetic evidence shows that many individuals from this period carried ancestry from Central Europe. This influx likely reflects sustained population movements rather than isolated events.</p>



<p>On the Swedish island of Öland, individuals with Central European ancestry were found to have grown up locally, based on biomolecular analysis of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bronze-age-teeth-discovery-highlight-the-evolution-of-the-human-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">teeth</a>. This suggests a lasting integration of migrants into Scandinavian communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Archaeological evidence points to periods of conflict in Scandinavia during this time, which may have influenced these movements, though more research is needed to understand the underlying causes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-viking-age-and-genetic-mixing">The Viking Age and genetic mixing</h2>



<p>The Viking Age, known for its raiding and settlement activities, left a significant genetic footprint across Europe. The research confirmed that many individuals in Viking-controlled territories carried mixed local and Scandinavian ancestries.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For example, Viking remains in present-day Ukraine and Russia were linked to Sweden, while those in Britain traced ancestry to Denmark.</p>



<p>Mass graves in Britain containing Viking warriors who died violently further support historical accounts of raiding parties and battles. These findings illustrate the profound impact of Viking expansion on the genetic and cultural landscape of Europe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-richer-understanding-of-human-migrations">A richer understanding of human migrations </h2>



<p>These discoveries add depth to historical narratives of human migration patterns during the first millennium AD.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Peter Heather, co-author and professor of Medieval History at <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a>, emphasized the significance of Twigstats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Historical sources indicate that migration played some role in the massive restructuring of the human landscape of western Eurasia. Twigstats opens up the exciting possibility of finally resolving these crucial questions,” said Professor Heather. </p>



<p>The study not only validates historical accounts but also offers new perspectives on the scale and trajectories of these migrations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By integrating genetic data with archaeological and historical records, researchers can build a more comprehensive understanding of how human populations evolved during this transformative period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-future-research">Implications for future research</h2>



<p>The success of Twigstats marks a turning point in the study of ancient migrations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The goal was a data analysis method that would provide a sharper lens for fine-scale genetic history,” said senior author Pontus Skoglund, group leader of the Ancient Genomics Laboratory at the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a>.</p>



<p>The team plans to expand the record of ancient genomes to apply Twigstats to other regions and populations worldwide. This could reveal previously unknown migration patterns and deepen our understanding of how human societies have interacted and adapted over millennia.</p>

Ancient DNA reveals human migration patterns in the first millennium AD

Researchers at the Francis Crick Institute have made breakthrough discoveries...

<p>Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extraordinary, fleeting explosions of radio waves. These signals, often originating from neutron stars or black holes, last for just a millisecond but carry immense energy, briefly surpassing the brightness of entire galaxies. </p>



<p>Since their first detection in 2007, astronomers have identified thousands of these bursts, originating from distances as vast as 8 billion light-years away. However, their exact sources have remained an enigma.</p>



<p>A breakthrough study by MIT researchers, published in the journal <em>Nature</em>, sheds new light on this cosmic puzzle. </p>



<p>By examining FRB 20221022A, a signal detected 200 million light-years away, the team pinpointed its origin near a highly magnetized neutron star.</p>



<p>The findings provide the first concrete evidence that some FRBs emerge from the magnetosphere - the chaotic, magnetic region surrounding such stars.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-neutron-stars-the-basics">Understanding neutron stars -- the basics</h2>



<p>When a massive star runs out of fuel and goes supernova, the core that’s left behind can collapse into a super-dense ball called a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neutron-star-collisions-push-the-limits-of-extreme-physics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutron star</a>. </p>



<p>These stars are so dense that a teaspoon of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-jets-cannibals-neutron-stars-explosions-contain-life-elements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutron star</a> material could weigh about as much as Mount Everest. </p>



<p>What makes them even more fascinating is that they're mostly made up of neutrons - subatomic particles that normally hang out inside the nucleus of atoms. </p>



<p>The incredible pressure from the collapsing star pushes electrons and protons together to form these neutrons, making the star ridiculously dense and compact.</p>



<p>Neutron stars can spin incredibly fast, sometimes up to several hundred times per second. And they have intense magnetic fields, which can generate beams of radiation that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/garden-sprinkler-s-shaped-jet-found-distant-neutron-star-circinus-x1/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shoot out from their poles</a>. </p>



<p>If one of these beams happens to point toward Earth, we get a glimpse of a phenomenon called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-guitar-nebula-a-pulsars-dazzling-performance-in-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a pulsar</a>. This makes the neutron star appear to "pulse" as it spins, like a cosmic lighthouse. </p>



<p>Despite being small in size, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-sun-like-stars-with-secret-companions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutron stars</a> pack a punch with their gravitational pull, and they can even warp space-time around them, causing weird effects like time dilation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-twinkle-of-fast-radio-bursts">Decoding the twinkle of fast radio bursts</h2>



<p>To trace the origins of FRB 20221022A, the researchers employed a technique called scintillation. This phenomenon, which is akin to the twinkling of stars, occurs when light from a small, bright source passes through gas, causing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-space-radio-signal-reaches-earth-after-8-billion-years-frb-20220610a/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">variations in brightness</a>.</p>



<p>The team analyzed the FRB’s brightness fluctuations and discovered that the burst originated from an extremely compact region, no more than 10,000 kilometers wide.</p>



<p>“This means that the FRB is probably within hundreds of thousands of kilometers from the source,” explained study lead author Kenzie Nimmo.</p>



<p>“That’s very close. For comparison, we would expect the signal to be tens of millions of kilometers away if it originated from a shockwave.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energy-released-from-magnetic-fields">Energy released from magnetic fields</h2>



<p>The team’s analysis revealed that FRB 20221022A likely exploded from a region just 10,000 kilometers away from a neutron star - a distance comparable to the span between New York and Singapore. This proximity strongly suggests that the burst emerged from the neutron star’s magnetosphere.</p>



<p>“In these environments of neutron stars, the magnetic fields are really at the limits of what the universe can produce,” said Nimmo. “There’s been a lot of debate about whether this bright <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farthest-known-fast-radio-burst-traced-to-rare-cluster-of-galaxies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radio emission</a> could even escape from that extreme plasma.”</p>



<p>“The exciting thing here is, we find that the energy stored in those magnetic fields, close to the source, is twisting and reconfiguring such that it can be released as radio waves that we can see halfway across the universe,” noted Kiyoshi Masui, an <a href="https://www.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a> associate professor of physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elusive-origins-of-fast-radio-bursts">Elusive origins of fast radio bursts</h2>



<p>The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (<a href="https://chime-experiment.ca/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CHIME</a>) has significantly advanced our understanding of FRBs. Since 2020, this unique radio telescope array has detected thousands of bursts. </p>



<p>However, the origins of these bursts have remained elusive due to competing theories. Some suggest FRBs arise from the turbulent magnetosphere near compact objects, while others propose they originate from far-out shockwaves.</p>



<p>The scintillation analysis by the MIT team rules out the latter possibility for FRB 20221022A. Instead, their findings confirm the burst’s origin within a magnetically chaotic environment, reinforcing the role of neutron stars as central players in producing FRBs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-polarization-another-key-insight">Polarization: Another key insight</h2>



<p>In a companion study, researchers from <a href="https://www.mcgill.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McGill University</a> observed a highly polarized signal from FRB 20221022A.</p>



<p>This polarization traced a smooth S-shaped curve, reminiscent of signals from pulsars, which are magnetized, rotating neutron stars.</p>



<p>“To see a similar polarization in fast radio bursts was a first,” the McGill team reported. This evidence supported the MIT team’s scintillation-based conclusion that the burst’s origin was in the immediate vicinity of the neutron star.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-milestone-in-understanding-fast-radio-bursts">Milestone in understanding fast radio bursts</h2>



<p>The precision of this study is staggering. The team successfully traced the FRB’s origin to a region just 10,000 kilometers wide - a feat akin to measuring the width of a DNA helix from the moon.</p>



<p>“There’s an amazing range of scales involved,” said Masui.</p>



<p>These findings mark a milestone in understanding FRBs. By combining scintillation techniques with CHIME’s vast dataset, scientists can now pinpoint the origins of other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-energy-flash-brighter-than-a-galaxy-traveled-8-billion-light-years-to-reach-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bursts</a> with unprecedented accuracy.</p>



<p>“These bursts are always happening, and CHIME detects several a day,” noted Masui. “There may be a lot of diversity in how and where they occur, and this scintillation technique will be really useful in helping to disentangle the various physics that drive these bursts.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-physics-and-magnetic-fields">Extreme physics and magnetic fields</h2>



<p>The research was made possible by support from numerous institutions, including the <a href="https://www.innovation.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canada Foundation for Innovation</a>, the <a href="https://www.dunlap.utoronto.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dunlap Institute</a> for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and the <a href="https://tsi.mcgill.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trottier Space Institute</a>.</p>



<p>The study’s MIT co-authors, along with collaborators from multiple institutions, have paved the way for deeper insights into the enigmatic world of fast radio bursts.</p>



<p>As scientists continue to unravel these cosmic phenomena, the universe's most brilliant radio <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-radio-burst-traveled-through-space-for-8-billion-years-to-reach-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flares</a> may hold the key to understanding extreme physics and magnetic fields at the edge of what the cosmos can produce.</p>

<p>Our brain is the organ that most distinguishes us from other primates. Its large size, complexity and capabilities exceed those of any other species on our planet. </p>



<p>However, we share up to 95% of our genome with chimpanzees, our closest living relatives. So how can such closely related species - at the genomic level - exhibit such stark differences in brain function?&nbsp;</p>



<p>It turns out, certain brain cell types may hold the key, according to a study led by Professor Soojin Yi at the <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Santa Barbara</a>. The research was conducted with collaborators at the <a href="https://www.imim.cat/en_index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona</a>.</p>



<p>The findings show that while humans and chimpanzees share many of the same genes, alterations in gene activity may account for distinctive features of the human brain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-the-focus-to-gene-expression">Shifting the focus to gene expression</h2>



<p>Researchers have long known that genes serve as a blueprint for an organism, but actual biological processes hinge on how, when, and to what extent these genes are turned on or off.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Scientists quantify this by measuring messenger RNA (mRNA), the molecule that relays a gene’s instructions to cellular machinery.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As they compared the human genome to that of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-feel-the-pressure-to-perform-with-an-audience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chimpanzees</a>, scholars once believed the differences resided in the genes themselves.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, with well over 90% genetic similarity, that explanation alone appeared insufficient. Instead, gene expression - the amount of mRNA produced - seems to be the crucial factor in explaining why the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-human-brain-processes-visual-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human brain</a> diverges so markedly from primate relatives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gene-expression-and-brain-evolution">Gene expression and brain evolution</h2>



<p>There is growing evidence that even tiny alterations in how genes are regulated can lead to significant changes in anatomy and behavior. “Differential gene expression is really how human brains evolved,” Yi said.</p>



<p>The researchers set out to identify precisely which genes in specific types of brain cells might exhibit notable differences in expression among humans, chimpanzees, and other primates.</p>



<p>Until recently, scientists typically studied gene expression by taking tissue samples that contained mixtures of cell types. This approach made it difficult to pinpoint the unique activity patterns within different classes of brain cells.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the new study, the team tackled this challenge by using modern techniques capable of analyzing single-cell nuclei. By isolating and sequencing the genetic content of individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-develop-faster-in-space-than-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain cells</a>, the researchers could categorize them according to cell type before measuring gene expression levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varying-cell-types-among-primates-nbsp">Varying cell types among primates&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This focus on specific cell populations yielded a wealth of detail about how gene activity in individual regions and cell types varies among primates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Data from humans, chimpanzees, and macaques revealed that many genes exhibit shared expression patterns, but humans often display enhanced expression.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Certain cell types, such as those linked to vital cognitive processes, show particularly strong upregulation in humans when compared to other primates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glial-cells-and-brain-expansion">Glial cells and brain expansion</h2>



<p>Neurons attract much of the attention in discussions of the human brain’s capabilities. But the study highlights that glial cells - non-neuronal cells that provide structural support, insulation, and other vital functions - may also play a critical part in distinguishing the human brain from its primate cousins.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Human brains generally have a higher ratio of glial cells to neurons than chimpanzee brains, hinting at how these support cells could contribute to advanced cognitive abilities.</p>



<p>One especially noteworthy subset of glia, known as oligodendrocytes, appears to demonstrate significant differences in gene expression. These cells form myelin sheaths that protect neurons and speed up the transmission of signals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers discovered that humans maintain a higher proportion of precursor oligodendrocytes than chimpanzees do, a difference that may underlie extended development times and heightened plasticity in the human brain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Though the study examined only certain brain regions, its insights suggest that gene expression in additional areas of the brain might also differ substantially among primates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yi and her collaborators plan to investigate these questions and delve into the molecular mechanisms that power these evolutionary shifts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts also intend to explore more distantly related species to reconstruct the broader evolutionary history and to assess how archaic humans, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-and-neanderthals-may-belong-to-the-same-species/">Neanderthals</a> and Denisovans, fit into the narrative.</p>



<p>In the larger context, gene expression research holds promise for explaining how relatively minor genomic differences yield large functional disparities. It shows that evolution can occur via subtle adjustments in the regulation of existing genes rather than the wholesale creation of new genes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By refining our understanding of these regulatory networks in the brain, scientists are one step closer to explaining how humans achieved their exceptional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/video-games-do-not-harm-childrens-cognitive-abilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive abilities</a>.</p>

From genes to genius: What makes the human brain unique?

<p>Hula hooping, often considered a playful pastime, raises intriguing scientific questions. What keeps a hula hoop up against gravity? Are some body types better for hula hooping than others?”</p>



<p>A team of mathematicians from New York University (NYU) sought answers to these questions, and uncovered findings that extend beyond hula hooping to potential engineering applications.</p>



<p>The study, published in the&nbsp;<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em>, is the first to investigate the physics and mathematics of hula hooping.</p>



<p>Study senior author Leif Ristroph is an associate professor at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences.</p>



<p>“We were specifically interested in what kinds of body motions and shapes could successfully hold the hoop up and what physical requirements and restrictions are involved,” explained Ristroph.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-physics-of-hula-hooping">Testing the physics of hula hooping</h2>



<p>To investigate, the researchers created miniature robotic hula hoopers at <a href="https://math.nyu.edu/aml/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NYU’s Applied Mathematics Laboratory</a>. </p>



<p>Using 3D-printed shapes representing human forms - such as cylinders, cones, and hourglass shapes - the team tested gyrating motions that were powered by motors.</p>



<p>These shapes were scaled to one-tenth human size, and hoops of about six inches in diameter were set into motion. High-speed video captured the dynamics of the hoop movements.</p>

<p>The experiments revealed surprising results. The specific gyration motion or the body’s cross-sectional shape (e.g., circular or elliptical) didn’t significantly impact the hoop’s ability to twirl. </p>



<p>“In all cases, good twirling motions of the hoop <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-bodies-can-bend-way-more-than-your-brain-lets-you-believe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">around the body</a> could be set up without any special effort,” Ristroph explained.</p>



<p>However, maintaining the hula hoop’s elevation against gravity required specific body features. A sloping surface, akin to hips, helped push the hoop upward, while a curvy waist provided stability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-excel-at-hula-hooping">Why some excel at hula hooping</h2>



<p>The findings shed light on why some individuals naturally excel at hula hooping while others struggle. </p>



<p>“People come in many different body types - some who have these slope and curvature traits in their hips and waist and some who don’t,” noted Ristroph. “Our results might explain why some people are natural hoopers and others seem to have to work extra hard.”</p>



<p>This insight ties body mechanics to hula hooping ability, and offers a mathematical explanation for what many have <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-perception-we-see-the-world-based-on-what-we-expect-to-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">observed anecdotally</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-applications-of-the-research">Practical applications of the research</h2>



<p>The study went beyond analyzing the mechanics of hula hooping by creating mathematical models that captured the dynamics of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-in-a-pill-is-now-closer-to-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activity</a>. </p>



<p>These models provided formulas to explain how motion, body shape, and forces interact to keep the hoop in motion. While they were developed to understand hula hooping, these equations have practical applications in other fields, particularly in engineering and industrial design.</p>



<p>“We were surprised that an activity as popular, fun, and healthy as hula hooping wasn’t understood even at a basic physics level,” said Ristroph. </p>



<p>“As we made progress on the research, we realized that the math and physics involved are very subtle, and the knowledge gained could be useful in inspiring engineering innovations, harvesting energy from vibrations, and improving in robotic positioners and movers used in industrial processing and manufacturing.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-hula-hoops-to-high-tech">From hula hoops to high-tech</h2>



<p>The study initially aimed to explore the seemingly straightforward mechanics of hula hooping. However, it uncovered principles that have significant applications beyond the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sitting-too-much-can-cause-premature-aging-even-if-you-exercise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activity</a> itself. </p>



<p>By analyzing how energy transfers and movements keep the hoop in motion, researchers identified ways to harness similar energy from vibrations. These insights could optimize energy usage in various devices.</p>



<p>Moreover, the findings offer potential improvements in robotic designs, particularly in enhancing the precision and efficiency of robotic movers and positioners used in manufacturing and industrial processes. This means that understanding hula hooping could help develop more effective machines and systems.</p>



<p>In essence, the research shows how studying a playful activity like hula hooping can lead to advances in science and technology. It demonstrates how fundamental physics can drive innovative solutions in unexpected areas, and bridge the gap between recreation and engineering progress.</p>



<p>The research was a collaborative effort by Ristroph, NYU doctoral student Olivia Pomerenk, and former undergraduate student Xintong Zhu.</p>

<p>Now, half a decade later, researchers continue to explore how we can better prepare for future respiratory diseases. </p>



<p>A study from the <a href="https://www.surrey.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Surrey</a>, led by Dr. Richard Sear, sheds light on the effectiveness of combined public health measures in mitigating airborne viral transmission.</p>



<p>These findings offer valuable insights for managing not just future pandemics but also seasonal illnesses like flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-viruses-the-basics">Understanding viruses -- the basics</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-use-gps-to-move-precisely-within-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Viruses are tiny invaders</a> that can wreak havoc on all living organisms. They’re not alive in the traditional sense because they can't function on their own. </p>



<p>Instead, they hijack the machinery of living cells to make copies of themselves. Think of them as little hackers. </p>



<p>Once they break into a cell, they insert their genetic material, tricking the cell into making more viruses. This process can damage the host, sometimes causing illness or disease in the process.</p>



<p>What’s wild is how viruses evolve. They’re masters of survival, constantly mutating to adapt and outsmart our immune systems. </p>



<p>Some viruses, like the common cold or the flu, come and go with seasons, while others, like HIV or COVID-19, have made a much longer-lasting impact. </p>



<p>Despite all their troublemaking, viruses can also play a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-viruses-on-arctic-ice-may-help-fight-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crucial role in ecosystems</a>, sometimes even helping in processes like gene transfer or controlling the population of other microorganisms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-viral-transmission">Fighting viral transmission</h2>



<p>Dr. Sear, an associate professor at Surrey’s School of Mathematics and Physics, examined how COVID-19 spreads through airborne transmission.</p>



<p>His work combined data modeling with information from the UK’s NHS COVID-19 app to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies like mask-wearing and improved ventilation.</p>



<p>“I’ve tried to measure how effective strategies, such as mask-wearing, are for the transmission of airborne viruses. This is both for any future pandemic, and for seasonal flu,“ said Dr. Sear.</p>



<p>“I combined modeling with data from the UK’s NHS COVID-19 app. While these estimates are highly approximate, they provide guidance on the value of measures such as face masks, social distancing and improved indoor air quality, which could be tested in the future.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-quality-face-masks">High quality face masks</h2>



<p>Among the protective measures studied, high-quality face masks stood out as particularly effective. Masks like N95/FFP2 reduced the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/virus-lifespan-and-transmission-boosted-by-high-co2-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19 transmission</a> rate by approximately ninefold when worn universally. </p>



<p>Even when used individually, these masks cut transmission risk by threefold, regardless of the contact duration. However, surgical and cloth masks were found to be much less effective by comparison.</p>



<p>The study highlights the importance of prioritizing high-quality masks in future public health strategies, not just for pandemics but also for managing seasonal respiratory illnesses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-indoor-ventilation-a-key-strategy">Improving indoor ventilation: A key strategy</h2>



<p>Beyond high-quality masks, ventilation plays a crucial role in reducing virus <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-use-gps-to-move-precisely-within-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transmission</a>. Viral particles tend to accumulate in poorly ventilated spaces, especially during close-contact interactions, speaking, or coughing. </p>



<p>Dr. Sear’s study found that doubling indoor air turnover rates - whether through open windows, increased airflow from air conditioning systems, or improved mechanical ventilation - can lower transmission risk by as much as 30%.</p>



<p>Coupling better ventilation with physical distancing further enhances protection, creating a multi-layered approach to airborne transmission prevention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-and-behavioral-factors">Environmental and behavioral factors</h2>



<p>The variability in COVID-19 transmission rates can be influenced by multiple factors, including viral load, individual susceptibility, and environmental conditions. </p>



<p>Some contacts pose a significantly higher risk than others, emphasizing the need for public health strategies that address both environmental and behavioral aspects.</p>



<p>“The COVID-19 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-covid-19-virus-travels-deep-inside-our-lungs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandemic</a> was terrible for many of us, which is why it’s important that we learn from our experiences. It also demonstrated how quickly we can develop and roll out vaccines when faced with a global health crisis,“ noted Dr. Sear.</p>



<p>“Moving forward, both we as individuals and our leaders have an opportunity to apply these lessons to better control respiratory diseases - not only to head off any future pandemics, but to also manage seasonal diseases such as flu and RSV.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strategies-to-reduce-viral-transmission">Strategies to reduce viral transmission </h2>



<p>The lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the value of preventive measures in controlling airborne diseases. </p>



<p>Investing in high-quality masks, improving indoor air quality, and promoting behavioral changes like distancing and masking during outbreaks can significantly reduce viral transmission risks. </p>



<p>These strategies will not only help in preventing future pandemics but also improve management of seasonal respiratory illnesses.</p>



<p>By understanding and applying these findings, society can better protect itself from the health and economic impacts of airborne <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-infection-equips-the-body-to-fight-off-the-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diseases</a>. </p>



<p>As Dr. Sear’s study demonstrates, simple yet effective measures like wearing N95 masks and enhancing ventilation can make a substantial difference in reducing virus transmission and saving lives.</p>

<p>Shrimp aquaculture plays a big role in global food production. People who work in this sector face a constant battle with viruses and diseases that can wipe out entire ponds of shrimp and other crustaceans in a short time. </p>



<p>One infection that has authorities and farmers on high alert is <a href="https://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Factsheets/pdfs/white-spot-disease.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">white spot disease</a>, also known as WSD. It appears most often in Pacific white shrimp and, once it hits, the losses can be massive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-virus-behind-the-shrimp-turmoil">Virus behind the shrimp turmoil</h2>



<p>Communities across continents rely on shrimp for both nutrition and economic stability, which is why identifying the cause of WSD and finding a cure is so important.</p>



<p>Scientists have identified <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2855118/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">white spot syndrome virus</a> (WSSV) as the major culprit behind WSD. Its spread is not limited to a single region, and cases are documented on farms around the world. </p>



<p>WSSV can travel through water, and infected broodstock pass it down to their young. That means containment is never easy when infection strikes.</p>



<p>“The development of robust detection methods and studies on the ecology of WSSV in wild populations should be a priority,” contends <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=%22S%C3%A1nchez-Paz%20A%22%5BAuthor%5D" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arturo Sánchez-Paz</a> from the Biological Research Center of the Northwest SC (Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste (<a href="https://www.cibnor.gob.mx/unidades-foraneas/guaymas/laboratorios-gys/laboratorio-experimental-acuicola-gys" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CIBNOR</a>)).</p>



<p>White spot disease stands out for how quickly it causes losses. Statistics from the <a href="https://www.woah.org/en/disease/white-spot-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Organization for Animal Health</a> show that it is “extremely contagious and has a high mortality rate.”</p>



<p>This puts shrimp farmers on edge, since a sudden outbreak can ruin an entire season. Many rely on practices like regular monitoring and improved pond management to spot any signs of infection before it gets out of hand.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-economic-worries-for-producers">Economic worries for producers</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-solve-lobster-farming-secrets-after-120-years/">Farm-raised</a> shrimp is a significant export item in many countries. A fast-moving virus undercuts producer confidence and can shake global markets if outbreaks spread too far.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the most serious viral pathogen of cultured shrimp. It is a highly virulent virus that can spread quickly and can cause up to 100 % mortality in 3–10 days,” according to a <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3550756/#:~:text=White%20spot%20syndrome%20virus%20(WSSV,mortality%20in%203%E2%80%9310%20days." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> published by the Department of Fishery Microbiology at College of Fisheries (<a href="https://www.cofm.edu.in/departments.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COFM</a>), in collaboration with Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (<a href="https://www.kvafsu.edu.in/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KVAFSU</a>), in Mangalore, India.</p>



<p>As a result, governments sometimes intervene to tighten import and export rules. That can lead to shipping delays or additional checks that drive up costs for farmers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurdles-in-prevention-and-control">Hurdles in prevention and control</h2>



<p>Experience in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrimp-homing-smell-chemicals-their-navigate-underwater/">shrimp</a> farms highlights some routine practices that limit the spread of white spot disease. </p>



<p>Operators reduce contamination by quarantining new stock and sterilizing equipment. If infection appears, culling can be an effective way to stamp out the virus before it spreads further. </p>



<p>Though these actions are not pleasant, they often keep other ponds safe. Even so, the virus has ways of getting around these barriers. </p>



<p>Vigilance is vital because water can easily carry infections from one pool to another, even over long distances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-shrimp-viruses">Fighting shrimp viruses</h2>



<p>Modern labs have built early detection kits to test whether shrimp carry WSSV. A major focus involves identifying infected shrimp before they show outward signs of sickness. </p>

<p>Researchers at the University of Iowa have called for a universal practice of surveying patients about their physical activity levels. The proposal is based on findings that highlight a powerful relationship between regular exercise and a lower risk of chronic diseases. </p>



<p>The study, led by Lucas Carr, an associate professor in the Department of Health and Human Physiology, focused on more than 7,000 patients at the <a href="https://uihc.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-physical-activity-and-chronic-disease">Physical activity and chronic disease</h2>



<p>The research team compared self-reported <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/any-type-of-physical-activity-can-help-protect-the-brain/">physical activity</a> data with medical records. They found a significant connection between higher levels of physical activity and better health outcomes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moderate to vigorous exercise for at least 150 minutes a week was linked to a reduced risk of developing 19 chronic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">illnesses</a>. These included cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, and various forms of cancer.</p>

<p>Drawing on these results, the Iowa researchers suggest that health care systems should incorporate physical activity surveys into patient visits and offer relevant health and wellness services to those at greatest risk.</p>



<p>“In our health care environment, there's no easy pathway for a doctor to be reimbursed for helping patients become more physically active,” said Professor Carr. </p>



<p>“And so, for these patients, many of whom report insufficient activity, we need options to easily connect them with supportive services like exercise prescriptions and/or community health specialists.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lowering-the-risk-of-chronic-diseases-nbsp">Lowering the risk of chronic diseases&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This study originated from a desire to better understand how physical activity might affect overall health outcomes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Collaborating with Dr. Britt Marcussen, a family medicine physician at UI Health Care, Professor Carr introduced a physical activity questionnaire for patients visiting for annual wellness exams. </p>



<p>Between November 2017 and December 2022, individuals answered two simple questions: how many days per week they performed moderate to vigorous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-in-a-pill-is-now-closer-to-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exercise</a>, and how many minutes in total they exercised at that intensity.</p>



<p>Data from more than 7,000 participants showed a significant gap between people who met the recommended thresholds for weekly exercise and those who were mostly sedentary.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The group of patients who exercised 150 minutes or more per week appeared to be at notably lower risk for the range of chronic illnesses examined. Meanwhile, those reporting limited or no exercise had a higher propensity to develop these diseases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observations-about-the-study-population">Observations about the study population</h2>



<p>In addition to analyzing participants who took the survey, the research team also considered a group of 33,000 patients who did not receive the questionnaire.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The investigators found that those who responded to the survey tended to be younger and healthier than the non-responders, potentially reflecting a tendency for individuals who attend annual wellness exams to be more engaged in healthy behaviors overall.</p>



<p>Still, the central takeaway remains that reported physical activity levels correlated closely with the presence or absence of various chronic diseases, validating the essential role of regular exercise in promoting long-term health and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-the-critical-role-of-nature-in-human-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">well-being</a>.</p>



<p>“We believe this finding is a result of those patients who take the time to come in for annual wellness exams also are taking more time to engage in healthy behaviors, such as being physically active,” Carr said.</p>

<p>Identifying patients who are largely sedentary is just one step, according to the researchers. They also propose that health care systems implement practical methods to help these individuals become more active, such as referrals to exercise programs, community health resources, or professional exercise prescriptions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts point to a lack of structured pathways for physicians to be reimbursed for providing exercise guidance, which hinders widespread adoption of this type of support.</p>



<p>In a related investigation, published in the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39657641/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Journal of Physical Activity and Health</em></a>, Carr’s team discovered that insurance providers reimbursed almost 95 percent of claims for exercise counseling when health care providers billed for it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our findings suggest the recommended physical activity billing codes are reimbursed at a high rate when providers submit them for reimbursement, which reinforces the idea to make physical activity surveys and counseling services available,” explained Professor Carr.</p>

<p>This series of studies underscores the value of easily administered questionnaires for identifying patients who may be at elevated risk of chronic diseases, as well as the importance of follow-up measures that connect sedentary individuals with services to help them become more active.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By advocating for a simple, rapid, two-question survey, the researchers at the University of Iowa demonstrate how such a tool can fit seamlessly into routine medical appointments without overburdening patients or clinicians.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They believe this approach provides not only valuable data on patient health but also a means to intervene and lessen the impact of chronic conditions.</p>



<p>The authors argue that widespread integration of physical activity questions in clinical settings could bring noticeable public health benefits, particularly if paired with robust exercise counseling and resources for those who need it.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With the knowledge that insurance often reimburses exercise counseling, physicians and hospital administrators may find it easier to build these options into patient care, helping fight the epidemic of chronic disease and fostering healthier lifestyles overall.</p>

<p>A new type of parasitic crustacean has been reported in Taiwanese waters. It has a curious method of survival and prefers to live on black coral, pointing to how nature sometimes stuns us with hidden relationships beneath the ocean’s surface.<br><br>The animal, named <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31579171/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Synagoga arabesque sp. nov.</em></a>, was found on black coral in the waters near Green Island, Taiwan. Scientists spotted twelve specimens from shallow spots that were reachable with scuba gear. </p>



<p>It is the fourth known species in the <em>Synagoga</em> group and the second species identified in the western Pacific, illustrating how much we still have to learn about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-parasites-are-vulnerable-to-warming-oceans/">parasitic life in the sea</a>.</p>

<p>The co-authors behind this discovery say the use of modern imaging technology, known as scanning electron microscopy, gave them a closer look at this species than ever before. </p>



<p>According to <em>ZooKeys</em>, the study marks the second time this specialized imaging technique has been used to analyze these crustaceans, an approach that allowed for clearer images of the outer structures.</p>

<p>With only a few species in the <em>Synagoga</em> group on record, researchers see each new finding as a jigsaw piece that helps us grasp how parasitic crustaceans make a living. </p>



<p>The freshly documented <em>S. arabesque</em> raises questions about how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/highly-unusual-bacteria-discovered-in-deep-sea-corals/">undiscovered parasitic species</a> exist in the Indo-Pacific and elsewhere. </p>



<p>It also prompts a reexamination of black coral biodiversity and the range of microscopic life forms that cling to the surfaces of these corals. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
