<p>Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. </p>



<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>No two bodies of water are alike, and the North Atlantic Ocean is no exception. Each has its distinct characteristics, its own rhythm and - as recently discovered by researchers - its own memory.</p>



<p>Experts at the <a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/">University of Liverpool</a> have shifted the tides of understanding by developing an innovative technique to quantify ocean memory. </p>



<p>The team found that the North Atlantic Ocean possesses a memory of anomalous environmental changes that stretches back between one and two decades - far longer than the few years previously assumed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperature-anomalies-in-the-ocean">Temperature anomalies in the ocean </h2>



<p>For those unfamiliar with the concept, "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-ocean-is-losing-its-memory-and-becoming-less-predictable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean memory</a>" is a measure of the durability of marine conditions. </p>



<p>The researchers set out to investigate how long temperature anomalies in the ocean persist before being fully dissipated.</p>



<p>The results of various models showed that such anomalies can have effects for a full 10 to 20 years before fading. </p>



<p>The team noted that variability can occur from region to region due to differences in background circulation and basin size.</p>



<p>Understanding ocean memory is critical for predicting variations in the climate system that extend beyond immediate weather patterns.</p>



<p>The essential question about how long the ocean remembers has been challenging to answer. This is due to the persistent changes in atmospheric impulsion that hide the extended impacts of ocean circulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-approach-to-evaluating-ocean-memory">A new approach to evaluating ocean memory</h2>



<p>In a research paper published in the journal <em>Geophysical Research Letters</em>, the Liverpool-based team has presented their unique approach to assessing the memory span of the oceans.</p>



<p>The technique involves monitoring the evolution of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-were-a-driving-force-behind-2023s-record-heat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean temperatures</a> following a singular atmospheric event of great intensity.</p>



<p>Both swift and slow reactions were noted, revealing an immediate atmospheric effect on surface temperature, followed by a delayed reorganization of oceanic heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-the-north-atlantic-ocean-s-memory">Rethinking the North Atlantic Ocean's memory</h2>



<p>The team attributes the North Atlantic Ocean's extended memory, in particular, to the slow progression of alterations in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/collapse-of-main-atlantic-ocean-circulaton-current-amoc-is-already-happening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oceanic circulation</a> and heat distribution. </p>



<p>This suggests that variations in ocean temperatures can notably affect regional climates, such as air temperatures, for more than a decade.</p>



<p>The implications of this research are profound. It corroborates the idea that meticulous analyses of observations could augment the accuracy of future climate projections spanning over a decade.</p>



<p>Study lead author Dr. Hemant Khatri noted that the study addresses the fundamental question of what ocean memory truly is.</p>



<p>He explained that the new framework sheds light on the physical mechanisms responsible for the multi-year memory of the ocean and opens up avenues for the development of fresh methods to evaluate climate models.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-gap-in-climate-model-predictions">Critical gap in climate model predictions</h2>



<p>Study co-author Professor Ric Williams celebrated the fact that this is the first time scientists have been able to measure ocean memory. </p>



<p>Professor Williams pointed out that, in contrast to observation-based estimations, even the most advanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate models</a> have considerably underestimated ocean memory. These models have estimated its duration to be only 8-10 years.</p>



<p>This significant discrepancy could have far-reaching consequences for the precision of decadal climate forecasts that are derived from these models.</p>



<p>"Our work shows how the ocean affects our climate and how understanding the ocean temperature changes leads to enhanced skills over the next decade in climate projections,” said Professor Williams.</p>



<p>As we continue to explore the profound depths of the ocean's memory, we are reminded of the interconnectedness of our planet and the urgency for more accurate climate models. </p>

<p>Namibia’s fairy circles have drawn curious visitors for a long time. These round patches appear across dry grasslands near the Namib Desert’s edge, leaving odd, bare patterns that spark questions. </p>



<p>They stand out in a rugged environment known for extremes, puzzling observers while sparking debate and wonder.</p>



<p>The conversation took a new turn with research published in the journal <em>Perspectives in Plant Ecology, Evolution and Systematics</em>. </p>



<p>The work looked at what actually happens to young grass in these circles, and it's starting to change the way people think about these patches. </p>



<p>Scientists from Göttingen University’s <a href="https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/102170.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ecosystem Modelling Department</a> and <a href="https://www.bgu.ac.il/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ben Gurion University</a> in Israel were part of the team examining these unusual grass rings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-to-study-fairy-circles">How to study fairy circles</h2>



<p>The study analyzed 500 individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-desert-plants-are-not-immune-to-crop-viruses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">desert grass plants</a> in four different Namib regions. Each plant’s root and leaf length was measured, and photographs recorded subtle differences in survival. </p>



<p>They also measured soil moisture closely in the 2023 and 2024 rainy seasons. The scientists found that the top 4 to 5 inches of soil inside these circles became far too dry for new grass.</p>



<p>This area quickly turned into what the team called a death zone. Within just 10 to 20 days after rainfall, the tiny plants withered away.</p>



<p>The researchers pointed to a serious lack of soil water as the key reason the freshly sprouted grass died, not termites. That earlier theory had been popular, but it did not hold up when tested against the data. </p>



<p>The team found that the moist soil deeper below the surface, at around 8 to 12 inches, gave <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-desert-plants-are-not-immune-to-climate-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">established grasses</a> outside the circles a distinct edge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-water-in-unexpected-places">Finding water in unexpected places</h2>



<p>The older grass clumps near these circles reached water in deeper layers. Their roots extended about 8 to 12 inches below the surface. By tapping into these reserves, they held a lasting advantage after rainfall. </p>



<p>“With their well-developed root system, these clumps of grass soak up the water particularly well. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/desert-grass-survives-by-capturing-moisture-from-fog/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">After the rain</a>, they have a huge competitive advantage over the freshly germinated grasses in the fairy circle," explained Dr. Stephan Getzin from <a href="https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/1.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Göttingen University</a>.</p>

<p>“The new grass only loses a small amount of water via transpiration from its small leaves, resulting in insufficient ‘suction power’ to pull new water from deeper soil layers.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moisture-connection-to-fairy-circles">Moisture connection to fairy circles</h2>



<p>Measurements showed that topsoil moisture dropped quickly right inside the circles. The dryness arrived sooner and lasted longer compared to spots outside these rings. </p>



<p>“This is the cause of the death of the new grass in the fairy circle. Continuous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predicting-floods-its-not-just-about-rainfall/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil moisture</a> measurements over several years support this conclusion," Dr. Getzin surmised. </p>



<p>"This is because the soil water in the fairy circle only decreases noticeably quickly with the strengthening and regrowth of the surrounding grass after rain.”</p>



<p>This research cast doubt on earlier ideas that termites created these circles by eating roots, as the team did not find any solid link between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/termites-are-natures-architects-building-well-ventilated-nests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">termite activity</a> and the fairy circles’ formation. </p>



<p>This challenged a long-standing explanation and called into question how some earlier studies were interpreted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fairy-circles-water-and-life">Fairy circles, water, and life</h2>



<p>The findings highlight how plants adapt in harsh places. The shape of these fairy circles may help grasses organize themselves to make use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-water-day-a-focus-on-prosperity-and-peace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scarce water</a>. </p>



<p>Such patterns can emerge without a plan, simply because plants react to the environment in ways that benefit their survival. </p>



<p>The scarcity in these parts of Namibia encourages what the researchers described as swarm intelligence or self-organization, patterns that come about as individual organisms respond to tough conditions.</p>



<p>Deep in these desert grasslands, water is everything. When rain does come, it never stays long at the surface. The older plants have learned to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-rooted-crops-can-significantly-improve-soil-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reach deeper</a> for what they need. </p>



<p>Fresh seedlings, on the other hand, have short roots and small leaves, never pulling in enough moisture to survive. </p>



<p>This difference in ability to grab water shapes the look of these circles. It shows how living things respond to stress, forming arrangements that help them make the best of a bad situation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-all-of-this-mean">What does all of this mean?</h2>



<p>Although this research explained a lot, no single study wraps up every question about these unusual patterns. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saudi-arabia-is-turning-degraded-desert-sand-into-blooming-soil/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deserts have many secrets</a>, and each piece of work offers a snapshot of the hidden strategies that plants use to stay alive. </p>



<p>The study’s approach to soil moisture measurements and plant growth gave a new perspective on how grass communities manage to get by on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/floods-are-becoming-more-deadly-in-the-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">so little rain</a>.</p>



<p>The findings suggested a world of adaptation where small differences in root length or leaf size make all the difference. </p>



<p>Over the years, new data may build on this understanding, but for now, this study has helped shape how people see these famous patches. </p>



<p>It pointed to water scarcity as a major factor, rather than insects, and it revealed how local plants manage to survive by digging in a bit deeper.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-meaning-in-the-details">Finding meaning in the details</h2>



<p>In a corner of the world where rain is rare and life can seem unforgiving, each tiny blade of grass tells a story. The fairy circles, stripped of young sprouts, highlight a balance between survival and loss. </p>



<p>To sum it all up, this research suggested that those bare patches might hold water in ways that give established grasses a quiet advantage. </p>



<p>Such subtle relationships are easy to miss at first glance, but careful work in the field brought them to light.</p>



<p>Under that hot sun, where every drop of water matters, these patterns show how nature’s living things adjust, survive, and keep going.</p>

<p>Psychedelic substances are no strangers to controversy and fascination. Known more for their mind-altering properties that attract recreational users, these substances - psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, and ayahuasca - have sparked interest among the scientific community.</p>



<p>Their potential therapeutic benefits, particularly in treating depression, PTSD, and addiction, are gradually becoming better known.</p>



<p>When administered along with psychotherapy (commonly referred to as talk therapy), these substances can trigger profound psychological experiences which are believed to be therapeutically beneficial.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-standardized-reporting-in-psychedelic-therapy">Standardized reporting in psychedelic therapy</h2>



<p>Despite a growing body of research and increasing media coverage, psychedelics haven't received the green light for specific medical use by any major regulatory agency. </p>



<p>Access still remains limited to clinical trials, off-label prescriptions, and special access programs. </p>



<p>The continuous evolution of research highlights the pressing need for consensus on best practices, particularly concerning <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psychedelic-drug-therapy-could-help-treat-alcoholism/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">therapy</a> sessions that complement the use of psychedelics.</p>



<p>The demand for standardized reporting has become more pronounced in the wake of recent regulatory decisions.</p>



<p>In particular, the rejection of MDMA-assisted therapy for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mdma-therapy-ptsd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PTSD</a> by the FDA is believed to stem from the lack of clarity on how psychotherapy was administered in the presented studies.</p>



<p>As more research on psychedelic-assisted treatments surfaces, a coherent and consistent report on the psychotherapy aspect becomes crucial for these treatments to be recognized.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-placing-psychotherapy-in-the-spotlight">Placing psychotherapy in the spotlight</h2>



<p>Psychotherapy, often seen as the less significant component in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAP), is turning out to be more central than previously assumed.</p>



<p>The role psychotherapy plays in patient outcomes and the best methodologies for delivering it are still areas of active debate.</p>



<p>Albino Oliveira-Maia is the director of <a href="https://www.fchampalimaud.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CF</a>’s Neuropsychiatry Unit and senior author of the study. He emphasized the need to standardize research methods in future studies.</p>



<p>"We have a real opportunity to raise research standards across all treatments that combine psychotherapy and medication," said Oliveira-Maia.</p>



<p>"By paying greater attention to the psychotherapy component - both in developing treatment protocols and in publishing trial results - we can improve the replicability, safety, and potential effectiveness of these therapies, and train therapists adequately."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insufficient-reports-on-psychotherapy">Insufficient reports on psychotherapy </h2>



<p>Upon reviewing 45 studies involving 1,464 participants, the researchers found that the reports on psychological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psilocybin-treatment-rapidly-relieves-symptoms-of-major-depression/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interventions</a> were often insufficient or inconsistent.</p>



<p>Key details like the therapy model setting, therapists' qualifications, specific techniques used, and the number of therapy sessions were frequently missing.</p>



<p>"For example, measuring therapist adherence - how closely therapists follow treatment protocols - is essential for ensuring safety and effectiveness. However, tracking adherence is costly and time-consuming, so it’s often overlooked," said study first author Carolina Seybert.</p>

<p>Seybert also noted that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mdma-and-methamphetamine-spark-human-connections-that-prove-beneficial-in-therapy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MDMA</a> studies tend to house higher quality reporting as they commonly employ a uniform treatment manual. </p>



<p>She suggests that having clear guidelines may not only assist us in understanding the most effective psychological interventions for distinct mental disorders, but could also support the delivery of PAP to maximize replicability in real-world settings.</p>



<p>Seybert and Oliveira-Maia believe that realizing the potential of psychedelic-assisted treatments requires an organized effort to bolster reporting standards and establish concrete, evidence-based protocols. </p>



<p>They also noted the silver lining - reporting has been improving in recent studies. "If this trend continues and is reinforced, regulatory authorities are more likely to have the data they need to make informed decisions," said Oliveira-Maia.</p>



<p>"This will not only benefit research but also ensure that patients receive the highest quality care and that delivery of treatments is equitable." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advancing-psychedelic-research">Advancing psychedelic research </h2>



<p>The future of psychedelic-assisted therapy depends not only on standardized reporting but also on collaboration across disciplines. </p>

<p>Unfortunately for some, the simple act of breathing could be causing significant harm - and even death. A recent study from Karolinska Institutet highlights the devastating health impacts of air pollution in India.</p>



<p>The research emphasizes the urgent need for stricter air quality regulations to protect the health of India's 1.4 billion residents.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pm2-5-a-major-health-hazard">PM2.5: A major health hazard</h2>



<p>The study focuses on PM2.5 particles - airborne <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/home-fragrances-impact-indoor-air-quality-and-the-health-risks-are-alarming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollutants</a> smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream, posing severe health risks.</p>



<p>Over a ten-year span (2009–2019), the researchers examined the connection between PM2.5 levels and mortality across 655 districts in India.</p>



<p>"We found that every 10 microgram per cubic metre increase in PM2.5 concentration led to an 8.6 percent increase in mortality," said study co-author Petter Ljungman, a researcher at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-mortality-linked-to-air-pollution">Alarming mortality linked to air pollution</h2>



<p>The findings reveal that air <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/understanding-how-air-pollution-forms-may-help-us-prevent-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a> exceeding India's own air quality guidelines of 40 micrograms per cubic meter contributed to approximately 3.8 million deaths during the study period.</p>



<p>However, when measured against the stricter World Health Organisation (WHO) guideline of 5 micrograms per cubic meter, the toll rose to a staggering 16.6 million deaths - accounting for nearly 25% of all deaths in India during that time.</p>



<p>The study emphasizes that no region in India meets the WHO's air quality standards. In fact, some areas recorded PM2.5 levels as high as 119 micrograms per cubic meter, far surpassing even India's less stringent guidelines.</p>



<p>This means that the entire population of India is consistently exposed to harmful pollution levels, year after year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-stricter-regulations">Need for stricter regulations</h2>



<p>“The results show that current guidelines in India are not sufficient to protect health. Stricter regulations and measures to reduce emissions are of utmost importance,” said Ljungman.</p>



<p>Although the Indian government launched the&nbsp;National Clean Air Programme (NCAP)&nbsp;in 2017 to tackle air pollution, PM2.5 concentrations have continued to rise in several regions of India. </p>



<p>The researchers point out that PM2.5 particles can travel hundreds of kilometers, making it crucial to address both local and long-range sources of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-from-fires-linked-to-1-53-million-deaths-per-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a>.</p>

Rural areas, on the other hand, face challenges from biomass burning and agricultural residue fires, further worsening the pollution crisis.</p>



<p>Additionally, long-term exposure to pollutants can lead to chronic conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and even cognitive decline. </p>



<p>Vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions, face heightened risks. <p>Food dyes are the secret behind the vibrant hues in your favorite candies, breakfast cereals, and fizzy drinks - but these synthetic additives are at the center of a growing safety debate.</p>



<p>That bright, cherry red that seems to beckon to your taste buds is not always a natural pigment.</p>



<p>Instead, these eye-catching shades are often the result of artificial food dyes, and the debate around their safety is gaining more traction than ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-down-the-aisle-of-colors-and-controversies">Down the aisle of colors and controversies</h2>



<p>Artificial food dyes, especially Red No. 3 and Red No. 40, have been under the microscope for quite some time. </p>



<p>Jim Jones, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for human foods, recently highlighted the long-overdue assessment of these color <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-additives-linked-to-higher-risk-of-cardiovascular-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">additives</a>. </p>



<p>“With Red 3, we have a petition in front of us to revoke the authorization board, and we’re hopeful that, in the next few weeks, we’ll be acting on that petition,” said Jones.  </p>



<p>Furthermore, concerns about the presence of these synthetic color additives in food products aren't expressed only by FDA officials.</p>



<p>Representative Frank Pallone Jr. has echoed these concerns, highlighting the alarming fact that the chemicals "remain hidden in these foods that we and our children are eating.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-food-dye-colors">The science behind food dye colors</h2>



<p>Usually, the scientific community is a reliable source of clarity but, when it comes to the effects of artificial food dyes, the waters remain murky.</p>



<p>The FDA maintains that the approved dyes are safe when used according to its guidelines. However, experts remain divided on this issue.</p>



<p>“We don’t believe there is a risk to humans,” said Jones. However, there are other voices in this discussion.</p>



<p>“The evidence now shows pretty conclusively that when some kids eat these, they will experience nervous system effects that look like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruits-and-vegetables-can-reduce-adhd-symptoms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ADHD</a>. There are 27 human clinical trials that show these dyes do in fact harm <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/irregular-bedtimes-disrupt-the-well-being-and-behavior-of-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">children’s behavior</a>,” said Thomas Galligan from the Center for Science in the Public Interest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-dye-regulations-in-the-u-s-and-europe">Food dye regulations in the U.S. and Europe</h2>



<p>Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the safety of artificial food dyes seems to be in the eye of the governing bodies. </p>



<p>While the United States continues to permit the use of these additives, their counterparts in Europe have taken a more precautionary approach. The European Union mandates a warning label on products containing certain artificial dyes. </p>



<p>The warning labels are intended to highlight the possible adverse effects the dyes may have, especially in children. This is in stark contrast to the U.S., where there is no such regulation in place. </p>



<p>Jerold Mande, an adjunct professor of nutrition at the <a href="https://hsph.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health</a>, stated: “The U.S. wears it as a badge of honor that we don’t adhere to it."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tides-of-change-states-taking-action">Tides of change: States taking action</h2>



<p>While the federal stance may require some time to shift, individual states are not waiting around. California, Illinois, and New York have all either introduced or passed legislation banning certain color additives. </p>



<p>With this domino effect in progress, more food manufacturers may be compelled to remove artificial dyes - not only for health considerations but also because it makes business sense.</p>



<p>“These food dyes are things that a lot of countries already don’t allow. It’s one thing to produce different foods for different countries, but to do it for different states is a nonstarter,” said Mande.</p>



<p>Though this rich tapestry of colors and controversies will continue to unravel, one thing is clear – the conversation around artificial food dyes is far from over. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-shift-toward-natural-alternatives">A shift toward natural alternatives</h2>



<p>In response to growing public concern, several major food manufacturers have already taken steps to remove artificial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-dye-linked-to-inflammatory-bowel-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dyes</a> from their products. </p>



<p>In 2015, Kraft replaced synthetic dyes like Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 with natural colorings in its iconic macaroni and cheese. That same year, Nestlé reformulated over 250 products, including popular candy bars, to eliminate Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 5.</p>



<p>This shift demonstrates that transitioning away from artificial food dyes is feasible, especially as consumer demand for cleaner, more transparent ingredient lists continues to grow.</p>



<p>According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, implementing a federal ban on synthetic dyes would be straightforward. </p>



<p>"They just have to make the decision that it no longer meets the safety standard and issue a decision that it is no longer allowed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-chemicals-from-food-production-pass-into-the-human-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food</a>," explained Thomas Galligan. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolving-consumer-preferences">Evolving consumer preferences </h2>



<p>While the FDA has reviewed studies cited by lawmakers in support of such measures, its position remains cautious. </p>



<p>"The totality of scientific evidence shows that most children have no adverse effects when consuming foods containing color additives, but some evidence suggests that certain children may be sensitive to them," noted an FDA spokesperson. </p>



<p>The growing move toward natural alternatives signals a potential future where artificial food dyes could become a thing of the past, which would align with evolving consumer preferences and scientific scrutiny.</p>

FDA faces scrutiny over synthetic food dyes

<p>Just like humans, birds also host a blend of microorganisms - both friendly and harmful - that make up their microbiome. This "little world" within living organisms plays a vital role in overall health, and it seems that the diversity of microbes is a key factor in the way the microbiome affects each individual.</p>



<p>If you want to fuel your immune system and absorb nutrients more efficiently, you need a rainbow of different microbes in your gut. Conversely, low diversity could leave you susceptible to illnesses.</p>



<p>This relationship between microbiome diversity and health has intrigued researchers for years.</p>



<p>To understand this link better, scientists from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science embarked on a five-year study.</p>



<p>The researchers examined how songbird gut microbiomes relate to traits that indicate health and breeding success. While laboratory studies have explored gut microbiome connections in captive animals, knowledge about these relationships in wild animals - particularly birds - remains limited.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bird-health-is-tied-to-microbiome">Bird health is tied to microbiome</h2>



<p>The researchers focused on the Northern cardinal (<em>Cardinalis cardinalis</em>), a common backyard bird known for its vivid red plumage, red beak, and black mask. This study provides the first-ever description of how a wild bird’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-gut-microbiome-is-shaped-by-what-we-eat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiome</a> relates to its ornamentation and body condition.</p>



<p>The results revealed that a cardinal’s gut microbiome diversity can be predicted by its body condition and the quality of its red plumage and beak.</p>



<p>"Our findings confirm the hypothesis that a wild bird’s health is tied to its microbiome, and that the ‘sexiness’ of a male’s ornaments can signal his health," said Rindy Anderson, Ph.D., senior author and an associate professor in FAU’s <a href="https://biology.fau.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Biological Sciences</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbiomes-and-carotenoid-pigments">Microbiomes and carotenoid pigments</h2>



<p>The Northern cardinal’s sexually selected carotenoid pigments provided a unique opportunity for this study. </p>



<p>Carotenoid-based coloration reflects individual quality, making the cardinal’s vibrant red coloration a perfect subject for exploring connections between traits and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-influence-our-social-behavior-and-sense-of-fairness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gut microbiota</a>.</p>



<p>"This study has important applications for conservation biology and contributes to a better understanding of ways to improve animal health in settings such as wildlife hospitals, zoos and aquaria, and captive breeding programs for endangered species," said Morgan Slevin, first author and a Ph.D. candidate in FAU’s Department of Biological Sciences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-northern-cardinals">Observing Northern cardinals</h2>



<p>To investigate these relationships, the researchers sampled the cloacal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/balancing-gut-microbes-could-protect-us-from-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiomes</a> of wild cardinals.</p>



<p>The team measured the birds’ body condition index, assessed the coloration of their sexual ornaments (beak and plumage), and collected blood to estimate their glucocorticoid response to stress.</p>



<p>This approach helped the researchers to describe the baseline relationships between various aspects of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in free-living songbirds.</p>



<p>"Overall, cardinal ornament redness and saturation positively correlate with individual quality," said Slevin. "Thus, deeper red coloration indicates greater carotenoid pigmentation. We were able to show that a cardinal’s coloration related to its microbiome diversity."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbiome-structures-of-birds">Microbiome structures of birds</h2>



<p>The study revealed several important connections: Both alpha and beta <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-microbes-affect-how-we-handle-everyday-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial diversity</a> were related to individual variation in body condition and sexual ornaments.</p>



<p>Beak saturation related to beta diversity, suggesting birds with similar beak coloration profiles had more similar microbiome structures.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the team found that glucocorticoid concentrations did not correlate with microbiome diversity or ornamentation quality.</p>



<p>"While we anticipated that birds with the most saturated beaks would be the highest quality individuals, and that the highest quality individuals would have the most diverse microbiomes, our results suggest that maintaining a diverse microbiome might instead come at a cost to beak saturation," said Slevin.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-future-research">Implications and future research</h2>



<p>These findings highlight the intricate relationships between gut microbiomes, physical traits, and overall health in wild songbirds. They add to a growing body of research linking avian host fitness to internal bacterial community characteristics.</p>



<p>"Ultimately, our study and those that follow should move us closer to answering the overall question of whether a bird’s gut microbiome can predict individual quality," said Anderson.</p>



<p>The research not only deepens our understanding of microbiome diversity in wild birds but also provides insights that could inform conservation efforts and animal health management. </p>



<p>By continuing to explore these connections, scientists aim to unlock more secrets about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tool-detects-changes-in-gut-health-to-help-prevent-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiomes</a> influence the health and survival of living organisms.</p>



<p>In the end, understanding these microbial relationships may hold the key to promoting healthier ecosystems and wildlife populations.</p>

<p>Periods of sudden melting across the Antarctic ice sheet have been discovered in a new climate record dating back over 20 million years.</p>



<p>This research, led by geoscientists from the University of Leicester and the University of Southampton, sheds light on the sensitivity of Earth’s early ice ages to changes in the planet’s orbit.</p>



<p>The study highlights the implications for the Antarctic ice sheet’s stability in today’s warming world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctic-ice-sheet-s-past">Antarctic ice sheet’s past</h2>



<p>The Antarctic ice sheet has <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emergency-meeting-reveals-the-alarming-extent-of-antarcticas-ice-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fluctuated in size</a> throughout its history, akin to a heartbeat. However, records from different ocean locations have revealed variations in these "heartbeats" - an anomaly that has puzzled scientists.</p>



<p>This shouldn’t happen because Antarctic ice changes should leave the same mark across the ocean.</p>



<p>These variations are linked to the Earth’s eccentric orbit, which changes over hundreds of thousands to millions of years. During more eccentric orbits, Earth’s distance from the Sun fluctuates significantly, leading to periods of higher heat exposure when the planet is closer. </p>



<p>This increased heat disrupts the climate system, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-will-the-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">triggering rapid ice melting</a>. Conversely, during more circular orbits, the ice sheet remains more stable and shows less melting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unstable-antarctic-ice-sheets">Unstable Antarctic ice sheets </h2>



<p>The researchers examined the period between 28 and 20 million years ago, a time when Earth was warmer.</p>



<p>The team utilized geological cores from an Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) expedition to reconstruct past climate changes.</p>



<p>These cores, recovered from the northwest Atlantic Ocean, contain oxygen isotope records that help scientists determine whether the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-melting-new-tipping-point-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice sheet</a> expanded or contracted at different times.</p>



<p>"From our research, we can see that the Antarctic ice sheet is more unstable than previously thought. We demonstrate how sensitive the geologically early Antarctic ice sheet was to changes in Earth’s orbit and axis," explained Dr. Tim van Peer from the <a href="https://le.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leicester</a>.</p>



<p>"We cannot assume that the modern-day Antarctic ice sheet is stable. If climate emissions continue unabated, we are on course to melt a large amount of the Antarctic ice sheet."</p>



<p>"We need to mitigate climate change by reducing our emissions. This is the only way to not cross tipping points in the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet."</p>

<p>The research team analyzed samples containing microorganisms from the geological cores. These microorganisms preserve ocean chemistry in their shells, which record the oxygen isotope ratio. By measuring these ratios, the scientists established a timeline of ice sheet growth and melting events.</p>



<p>"It may be a surprising thing to learn that we take the pulse of the Antarctic ice sheet by doing some simple chemistry on pinhead-sized fossil shells from the deep seafloor on the other side of the world," noted Professor Paul Wilson from the <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Southampton</a>.</p>



<p>"But the really beautiful thing is that we can do it back through the geological record over tens of millions of years. Earth science is about time travel into the past and we are always learning lessons to help us understand our future."</p>

<p>This research represents a multinational partnership, primarily involving scientists from the U.K. and Germany. It was supported by the U.K. Research and Innovation/Natural Environment Research Council and the German Science Foundation.</p>



<p>The IODP, a publicly funded international marine research program involving 21 countries, facilitated this work. IODP explores Earth’s history and dynamics by analyzing seafloor sediments and rocks. Samples for this study were collected during Expedition 342 and built upon years of collaborative effort.</p>



<p>The University of Leicester has a long-standing involvement in IODP, dating back to the 1980s. Recent expeditions include "Hawai’ian Drowned Reefs" and "Tracking Tsunamigenic Slip Across the Japan Trench (JTRACK)." </p>

<p>Researchers have recently concluded that the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is now almost certainly out of reach.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This stark finding suggests that the years ahead will almost inevitably break existing heat records - no matter how quickly greenhouse gas emissions decline.</p>



<p>The study, published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/%202024GL111832" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Geophysical Research Letters</em></a>, indicates a 50% chance that even if humanity achieves current targets for rapidly reducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a> to net-zero by the 2050s, global warming could breach two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limiting-global-warming-with-decarbonization">Limiting global warming with decarbonization </h2>



<p>Previous research, including assessments by the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a>, had concluded that such decarbonization would likely keep warming below two degrees.</p>



<p>Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at the <a href="https://sustainability.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability</a>, co-authored the study with <a href="https://www.colostate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a> climate scientist Elizabeth Barnes.</p>



<p>“We’ve been seeing accelerating impacts around the world in recent years, from heatwaves and heavy rainfall and other extremes,” said Diffenbaugh.</p>



<p>“This study suggests that, even in the best case scenario, we are very likely to experience conditions that are more severe than what we’ve been dealing with recently.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-warming-beyond-the-1-5-degree-threshold">Global warming beyond the 1.5-degree threshold</h2>



<p>The new findings emphasize the speed at which the world is moving past critical warming goals. This year stands poised to surpass 2023 as Earth’s hottest year on record, with global average temperatures set to exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius (nearly 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the study, there is a nine-in-ten chance that the hottest year this century will be at least half a degree Celsius hotter - even if the world manages rapid decarbonization.</p>



<p>These alarming projections underscore that surpassing the 1.5-degree threshold is no longer a question of “if” but “when.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The significance is profound, given that this limit was a central target of the 2015 Paris Agreement, where nearly 200 nations pledged to keep warming “well below” two degrees while striving for 1.5 degrees.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study aligns with a growing body of evidence indicating that the 1.5-degree benchmark will be crossed, shifting the conversation toward how much hotter the planet will become.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harnessing-ai-to-fine-tune-projections">Harnessing AI to fine-tune projections</h2>



<p>For this research, Diffenbaugh and Barnes employed an innovative approach: they trained an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-reveals-hidden-climate-extremes-in-europe/">AI </a>system to forecast global temperatures under various emissions scenarios.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The AI integrated temperature and greenhouse gas data from extensive climate model simulations and real historical temperatures. Armed with these inputs, it provided more refined projections than previously possible.</p>



<p>“AI is emerging as an incredibly powerful tool for reducing uncertainty in future projections. It learns from the many climate model simulations that already exist, but its predictions are then further refined by real-world observations,” said Barnes, a professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State.</p>



<p>This technique reduces uncertainty and hones in on more precise outcomes. By improving accuracy, policymakers gain a clearer understanding of the future they face, potentially guiding more informed decisions about mitigation and adaptation strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surpassing-three-degrees-of-warming-nbsp">Surpassing three degrees of warming&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A second paper by Barnes, Diffenbaugh, and co-author Sonia Seneviratne from ETH-Zurich suggests that many regions - including South Asia, the Mediterranean, Central Europe, and parts of sub-Saharan Africa - will surpass three degrees Celsius of warming by 2060 under scenarios of increasing emissions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study, published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ad91ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Environmental Research Letters</em></a>, notes that this warming may come sooner than previous models anticipated, indicating that some parts of the world face rapidly intensifying climate conditions.</p>



<p>The significance of surpassing such thresholds is immense. The consequences of even minor increases in temperature can cascade into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/droughts-and-extreme-weather-events-are-escalating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme weather events</a>, crop failures, water shortages, and heightened risks to human health and infrastructure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-climate-extremes">Preparing for climate extremes</h2>



<p>Both new studies build on earlier research by Diffenbaugh and Barnes that anticipated the timeline until warming goals are breached. However, rather than focusing solely on multi-year averages, the team shifted attention to the most extreme years and conditions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This perspective offers a glimpse into a future where temperatures and weather events are more volatile and challenging than the current average conditions can convey.</p>



<p>“As we watched these severe impacts year after year, we became more and more interested in predicting how extreme the climate could get even if the world is fully successful at rapidly reducing emissions,” said Diffenbaugh.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach acknowledges that even meeting emissions targets may fail to shield humanity from extremes surpassing what we now experience.</p>



<p>For a scenario in which emissions are cut rapidly and reach net-zero in the 2050s - the most optimistic widely modeled scenario - there is a nine-in-ten chance that the hottest year this century will be at least 1.8 degrees Celsius hotter than pre-industrial times.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, there is a two-in-three chance it will be at least 2.1 degrees hotter. If emissions remain too high to reach net-zero by 2100, a nine-in-ten chance emerges that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-shatters-heat-records-earths-hottest-year-is-here/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hottest year</a> will be three degrees Celsius hotter. Under such circumstances, many regions could experience anomalies at least triple what occurred in 2023.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adapting-to-a-new-normal">Adapting to a new normal</h2>



<p>The projections highlight that even with robust decarbonization, the world must brace for greater extremes. Historically, climate policy and investment have prioritized mitigation - reducing carbon emissions - over adaptation, which focuses on reducing vulnerability to climate impacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Decarbonization spending outpaces adaptation investments worldwide, as seen in policies like the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act in the United States.</p>



<p>“Our results suggest that even if all the effort and investment in decarbonization is as successful as possible, there is a real risk that, without commensurate investments in adaptation, people and ecosystems will be exposed to climate conditions that are much more extreme than what they are currently prepared for,” Diffenbaugh warned.</p>



<p>Adapting to these changed conditions will be essential. Without measures to increase resilience - such as improved infrastructure, healthcare systems prepared for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recognizing-symptoms-heat-related-illness-as-global-temperatures-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat-related illnesses</a>, agriculture tailored to new climate realities, and water resources managed to handle drought or flood - societies risk severe disruptions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-thresholds-into-severe-climate-extremes-nbsp">Beyond thresholds into severe climate extremes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>As the planet warms and thresholds are surpassed, scientists and policymakers alike must grapple with uncertainty.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research reveals a persistent gap between decarbonization goals and the severity of future extremes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Meanwhile, the AI-driven approach to refine climate projections may become a cornerstone of climate modeling, offering a more accurate and immediate window into what lies ahead.</p>



<p>The new knowledge that even optimistic emission scenarios may not prevent severe climate extremes underscores the importance of immediate and comprehensive action.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Ensuring that investments in both mitigation and adaptation proceed in tandem could help protect human communities, ecosystems, and the global economy from the worst consequences of an increasingly warming world.</p>

<p>Breakthrough research from the Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona has revealed that different types of cancer leave distinct molecular “fingerprints” detectable in their early stages.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These fingerprints, embedded in the ribosomes of cells, can now be identified with near-perfect accuracy using small, portable devices in just a few hours.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Published in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1097276524009195" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Molecular Cell</em></a>, this discovery paves the way for creating revolutionary non-invasive diagnostic tests capable of detecting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cancer-thrives-on-human-stress-as-it-spreads-throughout-the-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> faster and earlier than ever before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ribosomes-and-their-hidden-complexity">Ribosomes and their hidden complexity</h2>



<p>The study focuses on ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein production. Long believed to share a uniform structure across the human body, ribosomes have now been shown to possess a hidden layer of complexity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers discovered tiny chemical modifications on ribosomal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-world-unraveling-mysteries-life-origin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RNA</a> (rRNA) molecules that vary by tissue type, developmental stage, and disease state.</p>



<p>“Our ribosomes are not all the same. They are specialized in different tissues and carry unique signatures that reflect what's happening inside our bodies,” explained study senior author Eva Novoa, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.crg.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Genomic Regulation</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecular-fingerprints-cellular-health-and-disease">Molecular fingerprints, cellular health, and disease</h2>



<p>Ribosomes consist of proteins and rRNA, with rRNA accounting for a staggering 95% of the total RNA in human cells.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These molecules undergo chemical modifications that influence ribosomal function, creating unique “epitranscriptomic fingerprints” specific to different tissues.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed rRNA from human and mouse samples taken from organs such as the brain, heart, liver, and testis. They found that these fingerprints could provide a wealth of information about cellular health and disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-molecular-signature-of-cancer">The molecular signature of cancer</h2>



<p>The study demonstrated that cancer cells have distinct rRNA fingerprints, particularly in cases of lung and testicular cancers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The cancer cells are ‘hypomodified,’ meaning they constantly lose some of these chemical marks,” said lead author Ivan Milenkovic, a postdoctoral fellow at CGR. “We thought this could be a powerful biomarker.”</p>



<p>To test this hypothesis, the team examined tissue samples from 20 patients with early-stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honeybees-can-sniff-out-lung-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lung cancer</a>. They confirmed that rRNA in cancerous cells consistently exhibited hypomodifications.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fingerprints-for-early-cancer-detection-nbsp">Fingerprints for early cancer detection&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Using these unique signatures, the researchers developed an algorithm capable of distinguishing cancerous from healthy tissue. This model achieved near-perfect accuracy, marking a significant advance in the quest for early cancer detection.</p>



<p>“Most lung cancers aren’t diagnosed until late stages of development. Here we could detect it much earlier than usual, which could one day help buy patients valuable time,” Milenkovic explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-technology-nanopore-sequencing">Breakthrough technology: Nanopore sequencing</h2>



<p>The research was made possible by nanopore direct RNA sequencing, a cutting-edge technology that allows for the direct analysis of rRNA molecules, complete with all their chemical modifications.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This method provides a significant advantage over traditional sequencing techniques, which often strip away these modifications during processing.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It allows us to see the modifications as they are, in their natural context,” Novoa noted.</p>



<p>Nanopore sequencing devices are small enough to fit in the palm of a hand and can process RNA samples in real time. This portability and efficiency mean that researchers can analyze minimal amounts of tissue.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study demonstrated that scanning as few as 250 RNA molecules was sufficient to differentiate between healthy and cancerous cells.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is feasible to develop a rapid, highly accurate test that looks for cancer’s ribosomal fingerprint using minimal amounts of tissue,” Novoa added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turning-cellular-junk-into-a-gold-mine">Turning cellular junk into a gold mine</h2>



<p>Before the advent of nanopore sequencing, ribosomal RNA was often discarded as redundant information during research experiments. However, this study has transformed what was once overlooked into a treasure trove of diagnostic potential.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Scientists typically got rid of ribosomal RNAs because they saw it as redundant information that would get in the way of our experiments. Fast forward a few years, we’ve taken this data out of the junkyard and turned it into a gold mine,” Novoa explained.</p>



<p>The ability to analyze rRNA modifications in their natural state opens up new possibilities for understanding cellular processes and detecting disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-non-invasive-cancer-detection">The future of non-invasive cancer detection</h2>



<p>In the long term, the researchers aim to develop diagnostic methods capable of detecting cancer's ribosomal fingerprints through circulating RNA in blood samples.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach would eliminate the need for invasive tissue biopsies, making the process more accessible and less painful for patients.</p>



<p>The researchers caution, however, that more work is needed before the technology can be applied in clinical settings. “We're just scratching the surface,” Milenkovic says. “We need larger studies to validate these biomarkers across diverse populations and cancer types.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions-in-cancer-research">Future directions in cancer research</h2>



<p>One of the most intriguing questions raised by the study is why rRNA modifications change in cancer cells. Understanding whether these changes drive cancer progression could lead to innovative therapies aimed at reversing harmful modifications.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By identifying the mechanisms responsible for adding or removing these chemical marks, researchers hope to uncover <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trained-dogs-can-detect-bladder-cancer-in-other-dogs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">new ways</a> to combat cancer at its molecular roots.</p>



<p>“We are slowly but surely unravelling this complexity,” Novoa said. “It’s only a matter of time before we can start understanding the language of the cell.”</p>

<p>Exercise is known to boost both physical and mental well-being, but have you ever wondered why you feel "sharper" after a hard workout or a brisk walk?</p>



<p>This sensation isn't just in your head - there’s solid scientific evidence supporting the positive impact of exercise on brain function. A recent study has explored this connection and revealed that the cognitive boost we get from exercise can last well into the next day.</p>



<p>The study was led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London</a> (UCL) and was published in the <em>International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity</em>.</p>



<p>The interesting part? These brain benefits were discovered among older adults, specifically people aged between 50 and 83.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-memory-benefits-of-exercise">Memory benefits of exercise </h2>



<p>“Our findings suggest that the short-term memory benefits of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/any-type-of-physical-activity-can-help-protect-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physical activity</a> may last longer than previously thought, possibly to the next day instead of just the few hours after exercise. Getting more sleep, particularly deep sleep, seems to add to this memory improvement," noted Dr. Mikaela Bloomberg, the lead author of the study.</p>



<p>“Moderate or vigorous activity means anything that gets your heart rate up – this could be brisk walking, dancing or walking up a few flights of stairs. It doesn’t have to be structured exercise."</p>



<p>The study also revealed that more time spent not sitting, and getting at least six hours of sleep a night also resulted in better scores on memory tests the next day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-triggers-a-cognitive-boost">Exercise triggers a cognitive boost</h2>



<p>Exercise, especially the kind that gets your heart racing, isn't just good for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/consensual-touch-greatly-benefits-mental-physical-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physical health</a>. It also has several mental and emotional benefits. </p>



<p>In the short term, exercising increases blood flow to the brain, simulating the release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine. These enhance a range of cognitive functions.</p>



<p>While these neurochemical changes last only a few hours after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evening-workouts-are-best-for-blood-sugar-control/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">workout</a>, there are other mental changes induced by exercise that last longer, such as mood enhancement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cognitive-gains-persist-longer-than-expected">Cognitive gains persist longer than expected</h2>



<p>“This study provides evidence that the immediate cognitive benefits of exercise may last longer than we thought. It also suggests good sleep quality separately contributes to cognitive performance," explained study co-author Professor Andrew Steptoe.</p>



<p>The study utilized data from wrist-worn activity trackers to measure the physical activity levels and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-quality-is-determined-by-daily-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep quality</a> of participants. </p>



<p>Care was taken to adjust for a variety of external factors that could potentially distort the results.</p>



<p>The results were clear. More moderate or vigorous physical activity compared to a person’s average was linked to better working memory and episodic memory the next day. </p>



<p>The researchers found that more overall sleep led to improved episodic and working memory and psychomotor speed, while more slow-wave sleep was linked to better episodic memory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-and-cognitive-performance-boost">Exercise and cognitive performance boost</h2>



<p>It's clear that exercise has a long-lasting impact on cognitive performance. By incorporating regular physical activity into our routines, we can ensure our brains stay sharp and active. </p>



<p>However, the scientists behind the study noted that more extensive research is needed to further validate these findings.</p>



<p>While the correlation between exercise, sleep, and cognitive performance is fascinating, there is still much to be learned in this field. </p>

<p>Two researchers were walking near a small community in northeastern India on a warm afternoon, when they came across a creature that measured about 4 feet in length. They had no idea what they were looking at.</p>



<p>At first glance, it appeared to be just another dead snake. But a quick look at its oddly elongated snout had them scratching their heads, wondering what in the world it could be.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-documenting-a-new-species">Documenting a new species</h2>



<p>Sourabh Verma, a herpetologist working on reptile surveys, was one of the two scientists on that walk. He and fellow researcher, Soham Pattekar, decided to take the specimen for further examination. </p>



<p>They knew something was different about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snake-evolution-legless-lizards-into-slithering-snakes-100-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this snake</a> because it didn’t match any of the species they were familiar with. <p>When the scientists took a closer look, they realized this snake stood out in several ways. They described it in their report as “considered ‘medium sized,’ reaching up to 4 feet in length.” </p>



<p>They noted the head shape, which they described as “‘triangular’ heads tapering into ‘very long’ snouts, taking up roughly 18% of their head length.”</p>



<p>The research team chose to name this species <em>Ahaetulla longirostris</em>, which comes from the Latin words “longus” meaning “long,” and “rostrum” meaning “snout.”</p>



<p>They zeroed in on this distinctive feature because it clearly separated this animal from others in its group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-colors-that-pop">Colors that pop</h2>



<p>The researchers said the newly found snake had an orange belly, but what caught their eye even more were the colors on its back. </p>



<p>“Some are ‘bright green,’ while others are orange-brown,” they reported. </p>



<p>Variations like these found on <em>Ahaetulla longirostris</em> can sometimes help creatures blend in with their surroundings or signal something special about their environment. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-neighborhoods">Unexpected neighborhoods</h2>



<p>The snake was found in northeastern India, near the borders it shares with the countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal.</p>



<p>As of now, the researchers know it exists in places like Bihar and Meghalaya. They suspect that this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/two-coral-snakes-caught-in-rare-food-fight-over-caecilian/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">snake species</a> might have a wider distribution, but proving that will take more field surveys.</p>



<p>The scientists’ report made it clear that <em>Ahaetulla longirostris</em> doesn’t limit itself to deep forest hideouts. </p>



<p>According to their observations, it can thrive in “human-dominated” areas, including cities and villages. This suggests that it’s somewhat adaptable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the study, forming relationships relies on two key brain functions: learning from rewards and recognizing relational value, or how much others appreciate us.</p>



<p>Positive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-stress-harms-the-brains-of-low-status-fish/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social interactions</a>, such as smiles or compliments, act as rewards that encourage further connection. Similarly, recognizing when others value us - like a friend offering support - motivates us to deepen those relationships.</p>



<p>But these two processes don’t always align. A friend might miss your birthday party due to work but still value you deeply. Similarly, a job rejection doesn’t necessarily reflect your worth as a candidate. </p>



<p>"Our brains track these nuances," said Professor Hackel. "Understanding this can provide insight into mental health issues like social anxiety or depression, where these signals may get misinterpreted."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-pain-and-rejection">Social pain and rejection</h2>



<p>To study these mechanisms, researchers designed a game mimicking real-life <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/survival-of-the-friendliest-social-animals-live-longer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social interactions</a>. College students - an ideal group to study due to their rapidly changing social networks - played the game while undergoing MRI scans.</p>



<p>Participants created profiles describing their trustworthiness, believing that others would evaluate them. They then acted as "responders" in an economic trust game, deciding whether to share rewards with hypothetical "deciders."</p>



<p>Each interaction provided feedback on two fronts: whether a match was successful and how highly the participant was ranked. Brain scans revealed distinct neural pathways for processing these outcomes. </p>



<p>Rejection activated areas associated with social pain, while acceptance engaged regions tied to reward learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-interprets-feedback">How the brain interprets feedback</h2>



<p>The study’s computational models showed participants’ decisions were influenced by both outcomes and rankings. </p>



<p>For instance, someone who experienced a positive match and a high ranking was more likely to choose the same "decider" again.</p>



<p>The findings also highlighted differences in brain activity based on feedback type. Negative feedback triggered areas linked to social rejection, while positive experiences activated reward-related regions.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. <p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
