<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://resjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/icad.70017" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Insect Conservation and Diversity</em></a><em>.</em></p>

<p>Less than two weeks into its mission, Sentinel-2C satellite has already begun delivering breathtaking images of Earth, providing a glimpse of the valuable data it will contribute to Copernicus, Europe’s renowned Earth observation program.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sentinel-2c-satellite">Sentinel-2C satellite</h2>



<p>In the early hours of September 5, 2024 European time, the third satellite in the Copernicus Sentinel-2 series was launched into space from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana aboard the last Vega rocket. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Just like its predecessor satellites</a>, Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B, Sentinel-2C is equipped with a multispectral camera that captures high-resolution images of Earth’s landscape, islands, and both inland and coastal waters from an orbital altitude of 786 km.</p>

<p>The satellite's powerful multispectral imager boasts an impressive swath width of 290 km, capturing continuous, high-resolution imagery across 13 distinct spectral bands, with resolutions of 10 m, 20 m, and 60 m.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Within just a week of its launch, Sentinel-2C had already acquired an array of vibrant, detailed images from diverse regions across the globe, showcasing the satellite's versatility and precision in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/image/first-earth-observation-images-from-the-cosmic-kiss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth observation</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-images-inscribed-in-light">Images inscribed in light</h2>



<p>One of the early images features the clear view of Seville and its surroundings in southern Spain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another image offers a lengthy strip that stretches from Camargue and Montpellier in southern France all the way down to the south of Barcelona in Spain.</p>

<p>Venturing beyond Europe, Sentinel-2C satellite also captured an area south of Los Angeles in California, revealing one of the raging wildfires.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The satellite uses different bands from the multispectral imager to highlight natural color images and false color images of the wildfires, allowing us to see both the extent of the burn area and the active fires, depicted as bright orange spots in the images.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tranquil-beauty-in-blue">Tranquil beauty in blue</h2>



<p>A more peaceful satellite image features the Lighthouse Reef, part of the vast coral reef system off the coast of Belize in Central America.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A renowned site, the Great Blue Hole -- a giant marine sinkhole -- can be visibly observed in these images.</p>

While Sentinel-2 will continue to serve Copernicus with distinction for years to come, we are already looking ahead as we develop the next chapter with the Sentinel-2 Next Generation mission." said Simonetta Cheli, ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programmes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-promising-start-for-sentinel-2c">Promising start for Sentinel-2C</h2>



<p>Following its successful launch, Sentinel-2C’s multispectral imager will undergo calibration as part of the commissioning phase, which will last approximately three months.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite being early in its mission, the quality delivered by Sentinel-2C has already exceeded expectations.</p>



<p>Sentinel-2C’s commissioning activities run alongside the routine operations of its sister satellites Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3 for land, and Sentinel-5P.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-data-by-sentinel-2-satellites">Data by Sentinel-2 satellites</h2>



<p>The data provided by the Sentinel-2 satellites and other Copernicus missions managed by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>&nbsp;are freely available through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Once fully commissioned, data from the new 'C' satellite will also be accessible to users.</p>



<p>"We are thrilled to see the Copernicus Sentinel-2C already capturing such breathtaking images of Earth so soon after its launch. This is just the beginning of the incredible insights and detailed data it will provide, helping us better understand our planet," noted Constantin Mavrocordatos, Sentinel-2 Project Manager at ESA.</p>



<p>“It is truly remarkable how well the multispectral instrument had been calibrated even before the satellite was launched, producing such stunning first images," added Francisco Reina, Sentinel-2 Payload Manager.</p>



<p>"This achievement is the result of an outstanding collaboration between ESA and the Airbus teams throughout the instrument’s development phase."</p>

Sentinel-2C satellite delivers first breathtaking images of Earth

Less than two weeks into its mission, Sentinel-2C satellite has...

<p>New data on the weighty subject of gravity on Mars is shedding light on the planet's hidden structures and providing fresh insights into the volcanic activity that gave rise to Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in our Solar System.</p>



<p>The study explores the thick sediment layers that once formed Mars' lost oceanic landscape to uncover the secrets of our neighboring planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gravity-data-and-mars-hidden-structures">Gravity data and Mars' hidden structures</h2>



<p>Despite its barren and rugged appearance, Mars hides a world of mystery beneath its red soils. </p>



<p>Until recently, scientists could only hypothesize about the complexities of Martian topography shrouded beneath layers of sediment. </p>



<p>However, a game-changing analysis blending data from multiple sources, including the NASA <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/insight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">InSight Lander mission</a>, has unveiled intriguing anomalies in the gravity field of Mars -- revealing the existence of dense, large-scale formations beneath the northern polar plains.</p>



<p>Dr. Bart Root of Delft University of Technology (<a href="https://www.tudelft.nl/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TU Delft</a>) presented the findings of this study at the Europlanet Science Congress (<a href="https://www.epsc2024.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPSC</a>) in Berlin.</p>

<p>“These dense structures could be <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/violent-volcanic-eruptions-persisted-on-mars-for-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic</a> in origin or could be compacted material due to ancient impacts. There are around 20 features of varying sizes that we have identified dotted around the area surrounding the north polar cap -- one of which resembles the shape of a dog,” explained Dr. Root.</p>



<p>“There seems to be no trace of them at the surface. However, through gravity data, we have a tantalizing glimpse into the older history of the northern hemisphere of Mars.”</p>



<p>The features, engulfed in an air of mystery, are hidden beneath a thick, smooth sedimentary blanket believed to have been part of an ancient seabed. Interestingly, these structures could be volcanic remnants or compacted materials resulting from ancient impacts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-piecing-together-the-martian-puzzle">Piecing together the Martian puzzle</h2>



<p>Researchers from TU Delft and <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> employed deviations in the orbits of satellites to investigate the gravity field of Mars and unearth hints about the planet's interior mass distribution. </p>



<p>This data, fed into models utilizing observations from NASA’s InSight mission, provided new insights into the thickness and flexibility of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-internal-structure-of-mars-core-is-finally-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian crust</a> and the dynamics of the mantle. </p>



<p>The result was an unprecedented global density map of Mars.</p>



<p>The density map revealed that the northern polar formations are approximately 300-400 kg/m³ denser than their surroundings. </p>



<p>"Through gravity data, we have a tantalizing glimpse into the older history of the northern hemisphere of Mars," Dr. Root added.</p>



<p>The study also unmasked previously unknown details about the structures underlying the enormous volcanic region of Tharsis Rise, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-frost-detected-on-mars-enormous-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Olympus Mons</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-gravity-map-and-volcanic-conundrum">Mars’ gravity map and volcanic conundrum</h2>



<p>Although volcanoes are typically dense, the Tharsis region is unusually elevated compared to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-surface-contains-more-organic-matter-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars' average surface</a> and is encapsulated by a comparably weak gravity area. </p>



<p>This gravity anomaly raises questions about the contrast in the Martian crust and upper mantle.</p>



<p>"The NASA InSight mission has given us vital new information about the hard outer layer of Mars. This means we need to rethink how we understand the support for the Olympus Mons volcano and its surroundings,” said Dr. Root. </p>

<p>The study suggests that a light mass about 1,750 kilometers wide, sitting at a depth of 1,100 kilometers, is exerting an upward push on the entire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-frost-detected-on-mars-enormous-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tharsis region</a>.</p>



<p>This could be the result of a massive plume of liquid rock deep within Mars’ core, rising towards the surface. </p>



<p>“It shows that Mars might still have active movements happening inside it, affecting and possibly making new volcanic features on the surface,” added Dr. Root.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-martian-quantum-gravity-maquis-mission">Martian Quantum Gravity (MaQuIs) mission</h2>



<p>Looking towards the future, the research team is proposing the Martian Quantum Gravity (MaQuIs) mission. </p>



<p>Dr. Lisa Wörner of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) presented on the MaQuIs mission at EPSC2024.</p>



<p>“Observations with MaQuIs would enable us to better explore the subsurface of Mars. This would help us to find out more about these mysterious hidden features and study ongoing mantle convection, as well as understand dynamic surface processes like atmospheric seasonal changes and the detection of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-water-found-on-mars-would-cover-the-planet-over-one-mile-deep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">groundwater reservoirs</a>,” explained Dr. Wörner.</p>



<p>The mission, which aims to map Mars' gravity field in unprecedented detail, is adapted from technology used in GRAIL and GRACE missions on the Moon and Earth, respectively.</p>



<p>Clearly, we still have a lot to learn about the Red Planet, especially if humans plan on living there one day.</p>

<p>These journeys involved overcoming substantial natural barriers, such as the Alps, the Himalayas, the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, and the Mediterranean Sea.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-the-movement-of-cranes-nbsp">Monitoring the movement of cranes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Researchers used miniature GPS tracking devices to monitor the movements of 104 cranes across Africa, Asia, and Europe. These devices featured unique solar-powered GPS leg bands, developed by scientists from the <a href="https://www.ab.mpg.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior</a> (MPI-AB).&nbsp;</p>



<p>In addition to the tracking data, the researchers developed a statistical framework to analyze how the cranes’ movements were influenced by environmental factors, such as the presence of crops, water bodies, temperature, and vegetation cover.</p>



<p>“Animals have to satisfy their own needs with what they can get from their environment, but both of these are changing constantly,” said lead author Scott Yanco, a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://umich.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Michigan</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This creates an intriguing optimization problem that we wanted to know if cranes were solving through long-distance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agriculture-bird-migrations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migration</a>.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-challenges-faced-by-cranes-nbsp">Environmental challenges faced by cranes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study found that all four crane species faced vastly different environmental conditions throughout the year, and that these conditions were synchronized with key life events.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The stark contrasts in temperature or resource availability between their wintering grounds and summer breeding grounds were particularly notable.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For some cranes, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-migration-is-influenced-by-social-relationships/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migrations</a> themselves involved drastic shifts in environmental conditions. For instance, the demoiselle cranes had to contend with significant temperature fluctuations as they migrated across the Tibetan plateau.</p>



<p>“We suspect this all has to do with different biological needs during these different times of the year,” added Yanco, who conducted the research while at the <a href="https://bgc.yale.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-areas-with-abundant-resources-nbsp">Finding areas with abundant resources&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Yanco pointed out that common cranes clearly prioritized agricultural areas during the late summer, a time that aligns with raising juveniles and preparing for fall migration.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This is exactly when we would expect them to want easy access to food,” Yanco explained.</p>



<p>For other species, accessing food came with trade-offs. The black-necked cranes, for example, had to balance between safe roosting habitats and areas with abundant resources.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-competing-needs-of-cranes">The competing needs of cranes</h2>



<p>“Amazingly, the balance between these competing needs changed over the year depending on what the birds were doing,” Yanco said. During migration, they chose safer roosting sites, while during breeding, they prioritized abundant food sources.</p>



<p>“This type of shifting emphasis depending on what cranes need at any given time is what we were expecting to see,” said senior author Ivan Pokrovsky, a postdoctoral researcher at MPI-AB.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But we were blown away by how well the cranes used movement to resolve trade-offs among competing needs and to access certain environments during key periods of the year.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-conservation-efforts">Wildlife conservation efforts</h2>



<p>Understanding how animals interact with their environment not only offers a more nuanced view of how they survive in complex ecosystems but is also essential for informing conservation and management strategies in the face of the twin crises of climate change and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity loss</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study's framework provides a statistical tool to better understand the intricate relationships between animals and their environments, which can be widely applied to wildlife conservation efforts.</p>



<p>“When we know how animals use certain environmental conditions, we can make better predictions about how species might respond to human-caused global change and develop more effective interventions that ensure we preserve the conditions species need to survive,” Pokrovsky concluded.</p>

<p>Cranes are highly social and often travel in large flocks during migration. They are also vocal birds, using a variety of calls that can be heard from miles away, which helps them communicate with other members of their flock.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For example, the Siberian crane is critically endangered. Ongoing conservation efforts aim to protect its breeding grounds in Russia and wintering habitats in China and India.</p>



<p>Cranes have deep cultural significance in many parts of the world. In Japan and China, they are symbols of longevity, peace, and good fortune, and they are prominently featured in folklore and art.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The whooping crane, native to North America, is a symbol of conservation success, having recovered from the brink of extinction due to extensive preservation efforts.</p>

<p>In the high-pressure world of elite sports, maintaining mental health is proving to be as crucial as keeping one's physical health in top shape. </p>



<p>Alarming statistics from a recent study conducted by Amsterdam UMC, in partnership with NOC*NSF (the Dutch Olympic Committee and Sport Federation), highlight the extent of the issue. </p>



<p>The study, published in <em>BMJ Open Sport &amp; Exercise Medicine</em>, reveals that nearly 74% of Dutch elite athletes and 41% of their coaches report significant sports-related distress. The figures are reflective of global trends seen among elite athletes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-health-concerns-of-elite-athletes">Mental health concerns of elite athletes</h2>



<p>The study's findings go beyond stress, revealing a broader spectrum of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mental-health-crisis-half-of-the-worlds-population-will-be-affected-by-age-75/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mental health</a> concerns that extend into athletes' daily lives. </p>



<p>Excessive alcohol consumption, reported by 52% of athletes and 53% of coaches, is a notable concern, as it not only negatively impacts performance but also exacerbates underlying mental health issues. </p>



<p>In athletes, mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders are frequently linked to significant life events or severe injuries, creating a cycle of distress that can hinder both personal well-being and athletic success.</p>



<p>According to Vincent Gouttebarge, professor of sports medicine at <a href="https://www.amsterdamumc.org/en/organization/amsterdam-umc.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amsterdam UMC</a> and the <a href="https://www.up.ac.za/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pretoria</a>, the results are comparable to the mental health of non-athletes and are in line with similar studies among elite athletes worldwide. </p>



<p>"These are high percentages, but these are self-reported complaints and not serious diagnosed mental illnesses. Nevertheless, sports physicians and other supervisors should pay more attention to the psychological well-being of elite athletes," said Professor Gouttebarge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-unseen-toll-on-elite-athletes">The unseen toll on elite athletes</h2>



<p>The study surveyed 156 athletes and 95 coaches about their mental health experiences, finding that recent life events had a significant impact on athletes’ mental health. </p>



<p>There were strong links between these events and issues like anxiety, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-a-history-of-depression-tend-to-process-more-negative-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depression</a>, and eating problems. </p>



<p>Additionally, severe injuries were found to correlate with anxiety and sleep disorders - though no such patterns were found among the coaches.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-health-support-in-elite-sports">Mental health support in elite sports</h2>



<p>To address these issues, researchers recommend using the International Olympic Committee’s Sport Mental Health Assessment Tool 1 to screen athletes for mental health symptoms before the sports season begins. </p>



<p>Gino Kerkhoffs, Chair of the Academic Center for Evidence-based Sports Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, explained that the tool is an instrument to screen elite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/at-what-age-do-olympic-athletes-perform-their-best/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">athletes</a> for mental health symptoms. </p>



<p>"This makes it possible to identify athletes who are at risk of mental health problems or who already suffer from them at an early stage. And then the sports doctors can adequately support, treat, and/or refer them," said Kerkhoffs.</p>

<p>By creating an environment that prioritizes both physical and mental well-being, sports organizations can help athletes develop resilience, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/physically-active-children-cope-better-with-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cope with stress</a>, and seek timely intervention.</p>



<p>Collaboration between sports physicians, coaches, and mental health professionals is essential in ensuring athletes receive the right support. </p>



<p>Mental health training for coaches can also help them better recognize symptoms and provide appropriate guidance, which may positively influence both athlete performance and well-being.</p>

<p>As the conversation around mental health in elite sports continues to grow, the need for long-term solutions becomes more evident. </p>

<p>Top ocean experts have published a report that redefines the concept of sustainable fishing and proposes 11 “golden rules” that challenge the current flawed approach in fisheries management.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The report, released shortly before <a href="https://www.oceanweek.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brussels’ Ocean Week</a> and ahead of the <a href="https://ocean-climate.org/en/unoc2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UN Ocean Conference</a> in Nice, aims to halt the ongoing destruction of the oceans caused by fishing and ensure the restoration of abundant fish populations to sustain future generations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-guiding-principles-of-sustainable-fishing-nbsp">Guiding principles of sustainable fishing&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The rules are introduced at a time when scientists have dramatically downgraded their assessment of the ocean's health. The guiding principles underlying the rules aim to revolutionize the way we manage the ocean's exploitation.</p>



<p>According to the first guiding principle, fishing must minimize impacts on marine species and habitats, adapt to climate change, and promote the regeneration of depleted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine life</a>.</p>



<p>In addition, fishing must support the health, well-being, and resilience of communities, particularly the most vulnerable, rather than merely benefit corporations that funnel profits to owners and shareholders while others bear the costs.</p>

<p>Today, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-fishing-gets-a-boost-from-genomics-roadmap/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a> is widely recognized as the leading cause of ocean destruction. The authors of the report decided to collaborate after reaching a consensus that the current definition of “sustainable fishing” is dangerously outdated and contributes to the depletion of marine species, destruction of natural habitats and carbon sinks, and the decline of artisanal fishing communities worldwide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-outdated-concept-of-sustainability-nbsp">Outdated concept of sustainability&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“The current concept of ‘sustainable fishing,’ adopted by governments and private actors since the post-war period is scientifically obsolete,” said lead author Callum Roberts, a professor at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a> and chief scientist at the <a href="https://convexseascapesurvey.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Convex Seascape Survey</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It relies on a simplistic, productivist theory which assumes that as long as global catch volumes remain below a set limit, anyone can fish just about anything, anywhere, with any method.”</p>



<p>“Can we truly claim that all fishing gear is environmentally and socially equal? We currently label fisheries as sustainable without considering their impact on marine ecosystems or human factors, such as crew safety and rights,” added Jennifer Jacquet, a professor at the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Miami</a>.</p>



<p>The scientists denounce the outdated approach to sustainability, which fails to address key environmental, human, and developmental factors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists reached another consensus: fisheries must be managed in a way that minimizes environmental harm while maximizing social benefits, particularly in the context of a rapidly warming planet and growing global hunger.</p>



<p>To address these challenges, a group of leading ocean researchers has developed a visionary approach to ocean exploitation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This comprehensive, interdisciplinary definition of “fisheries sustainability” incorporates insights from biology, oceanography, social sciences, and economics.</p>



<p>The proposed rules provide a foundation for economic stakeholders and political leaders to transition to a sustainable fishing model that is viable for the long term.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-sustainable-fishing-nbsp">Rethinking sustainable fishing&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The framework envisions a future where fishing ensures abundant fish stocks for humanity’s long-term needs.</p>



<p>“Our work advocates for fisheries that preserve ocean ecosystems’ vital functions, mitigate climate change, guarantee food security and respect human rights,” said Daniel Pauly, a professor at the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of British Columbia</a>.</p>



<p>This innovative approach recognizes the ecological, social, and ethical roles of fishing, proposing a systemic and sustainable model that involves market players, policymakers, and legal frameworks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Roberts emphasized the need for a shift in perspective: “We must view fishing as a privilege rather than a right. Marine life is a public good that should both benefit society and nature, not be the object of a resource race driven by private gains.”</p>

<p>Supermarkets, which are responsible for nearly two-thirds of European seafood sales, play a pivotal role in driving this transition. They can influence fishing practices through their sourcing policies, scrutinize “sustainability” labels, and respond to growing consumer concerns about the hidden impacts of their food.</p>



<p>“We are witnessing a growing disconnect between the widespread availability of supposedly sustainable fish products, the collapse of ocean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-ecosystems-survive-extinctions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystems</a> and the frequency of reported human rights’ abuses. Supermarkets must stop misleading consumers,” said Pauline Bricault, markets campaign manager at <a href="https://www.bloomassociation.org/en/about-us/the-team-at-bloom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BLOOM</a>.</p>



<p>“Both the IPCC and IPBES have set 2030 as a deadline for critical changes. Industry stakeholders have no more excuses, they must act now.”</p>



<p>The call to action is urgent, with 2030 looming as a critical deadline for implementing necessary changes to avert further damage to ocean ecosystems and ensure a sustainable future for global fisheries.</p>

<p>This is the exciting conclusion of a study led by experts at Ningxia Medical University in China.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caffeine-and-dementia-risk">Caffeine and dementia risk</h2>



<p>Often, it's the simplest questions that lead us to the most profound discoveries. The research team, fueled by curiosity, asked an intriguing question: Is it possible that consuming caffeinated drinks can lower the risk of dementia? </p>

<p>While individuals with hypertension are at a higher risk of developing dementia, the researchers discovered a silver lining.</p>



<p>Regular coffee or tea drinkers with hypertension were found to have a lower risk of developing dementia. The experts report that just half to one cup daily seemed to offer some level of protection. </p>



<p>Interestingly, even the way you prepare your coffee could influence these effects - with freshly ground beans offering the greatest benefits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caffeine-may-reduce-inflammation">Caffeine may reduce inflammation </h2>

<p>Imagine gazing into the night sky and discovering a cosmic coincidence so rare it's like finding eight needles perfectly lined up in a haystack. That's exactly what a team of astronomers has stumbled upon -- a unique configuration of galaxies forming what they call the "Carousel Lens." </p>



<p>This extraordinary find promises to deepen our understanding of the universe, shedding light on some of its most enigmatic components.</p>



<p>"This is an amazingly lucky 'galactic line-up' -- a chance alignment of multiple galaxies across a line-of-sight spanning most of the observable universe," says David Schlegel, a co-author of the study. </p>



<p>Finding one such alignment is tough enough, but this discovery is something else entirely. "Finding all of these is like eight needles precisely lined up inside that haystack," he adds.</p>



<p>The research was conducted by scientists from <a href="https://www.physics.lbl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berkeley Lab's Physics Division</a>, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and data sources. Their collaborative efforts have led to this remarkable discovery, opening new doors in the field of cosmology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-carousel-lens">Understanding the Carousel Lens</h2>



<p>Why the excitement surrounding the Carousel Lens? This phenomenon features a foreground <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/1500-billion-orphan-stars-discovered-in-the-perseus-galaxy-cluster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy cluster</a> that acts as a gravitational lens, revealing seven background galaxies situated billions of light-years away. </p>



<p>Through the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/twisted-galaxies-millions-of-light-years-away-captured-by-the-vlt-telescope/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitationally distorted space-time</a> around the lens, we observe a stunning visual effect that evokes the image of a cosmic carousel gracefully spinning through the expanse of space. </p>



<p>The lensing cluster, situated about 5 billion light-years from Earth, is represented by its four brightest and most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/1500-billion-orphan-stars-discovered-in-the-perseus-galaxy-cluster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">massive galaxies</a>, labeled La, Lb, Lc, and Ld. </p>



<p>These galaxies form the foreground of the image. Behind this cluster, seven unique galaxies -- numbered 1 through 7 -- appear. These galaxies are incredibly distant, ranging from 7.6 to 12 billion light-years away, pushing the limits of our observable universe.</p>

<p>Each of these background galaxies doesn't just appear once. Due to the gravitational lensing effect, they show up multiple times in the image, labeled with letters like 1a, 1b, and so on. </p>



<p>Their shapes are curved and stretched, creating "fun house mirror" iterations caused by the warped space-time around the massive foreground cluster. </p>



<p>It's like looking at the same galaxy through different lenses, each distorting it in a unique way.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-einstein-cross-in-the-carousel-lens">Einstein Cross in the Carousel Lens</h2>



<p>One of the most exciting aspects of this discovery is the identification of an Einstein Cross -- the largest known to date. </p>



<p>This phenomenon is showcased in galaxy number 4's multiple appearances, labeled 4a, 4b, 4c, and 4d. </p>



<p>An Einstein Cross occurs when a single distant galaxy appears four times around a massive foreground object due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-galaxy-jwst-er1g-dark-matter-einstein-ring-mystery-solved/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational lensing</a>. </p>



<p>It's a clear sign of the symmetrical distribution of the lens's mass, which is dominated by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">invisible dark matter</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-gravitational-lensing-works">How gravitational lensing works</h2>



<p>Gravitational lensing happens when light from distant galaxies is bent and magnified as it passes near massive objects like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/twisted-galaxies-millions-of-light-years-away-captured-by-the-vlt-telescope/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy clusters</a>. This effect was predicted by Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. </p>



<p>It's not just a neat trick of nature; gravitational lensing serves as a powerful tool for astronomers. It allows us to see galaxies that would otherwise be too faint or distant, effectively acting as a natural telescope.</p>



<p>Such precise alignments are extremely rare. Think about it: the chances of multiple galaxies lining up in this way across billions of light-years are astronomically low. </p>



<p>This makes the Carousel Lens not just a visual spectacle but also a unique opportunity for scientific study. It provides an exceptional laboratory for testing theories about the universe's structure and composition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-study-was-conducted">How the study was conducted</h2>



<p>The research team didn't just rely on luck; they used a wealth of data from various sources. </p>



<p>They tapped into the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (<a href="https://www.desi.lbl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DESI</a>) Legacy Imaging Surveys, recent observations from NASA's <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hubble Space Telescope</a>, and computational power from the <a href="https://docs.nersc.gov/systems/perlmutter/architecture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Perlmutter supercomputer</a> at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center. </p>



<p>By combining these resources, they built on earlier studies to identify strong lens candidates, leading to this remarkable find.</p>



<p>"Our team has been searching for strong lenses and modeling the most valuable systems," explains Xiaosheng Huang, a study co-author and member of Berkeley Lab's Supernova Cosmology Project, and a professor of physics and astronomy at the <a href="https://www.usfca.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of San Francisco</a>. </p>



<p>"The Carousel Lens is an incredible alignment of seven galaxies in five groupings that line up nearly perfectly behind the foreground cluster lens."</p>



<p>As the galaxies appear through the lens, the multiple images of each of the background galaxies form approximately concentric circular patterns around the foreground lens, as in a carousel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-for-dark-matter-and-dark-energy">Significance for dark matter and dark energy</h2>



<p>Why is this discovery so important? The Carousel Lens offers a new way to study dark matter and dark energy -- two of the most mysterious components of our universe.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dark matter</a> doesn't emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it invisible and detectable only through its gravitational effects. </p>



<p>By analyzing how the light from these distant galaxies is bent and distorted, scientists can map the distribution of dark matter in the lensing cluster.</p>



<p>Understanding dark energy is even more challenging. It's the force believed to be driving the accelerated expansion of the universe. </p>



<p>The precise measurements made possible by the Carousel Lens could provide new insights into how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-is-ripping-the-universe-apart-but-we-arent-sure-how/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a> affects the cosmos on large scales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead">Looking ahead</h2>



<p>It's worth noting that this study also involved several student researchers. The lead author, William Sheu, was an undergraduate student intern with DESI at the beginning of this study. </p>



<p>Now a Ph.D. student at UCLA and a DESI collaborator, Sheu's contributions highlight the important role that young scientists play in advancing our understanding of the universe.</p>



<p>"This is an extremely unusual alignment, which by itself will provide a testbed for cosmological studies," observes Nathalie Palanque-Delabrouille, director of Berkeley Lab's Physics Division. </p>



<p>"It also shows how the imaging done for DESI can be leveraged for other scientific applications," such as investigating the mysteries of dark matter and the accelerating expansion of the universe, driven by dark energy.</p>



<p>So, what does this mean for the future? The Carousel Lens sets the stage for new types of observations and experiments. </p>



<p>It could help refine our models of the universe and perhaps even lead to breakthroughs in physics. The data gathered from this unique alignment will keep astronomers and physicists busy for years to come.</p>

<p>Our gut is a bustling metropolis of microbes, a complex ecosystem that plays a pivotal role in our overall health. Recent research from King's College London has thrown a fascinating light on two key residents of this microbial city.</p>



<p>Persistent colonizing species (PCS), the good guys, help maintain a healthy gut. But there's another type, transient colonizing species (TCS), which aren't as benign. </p>



<p>They can throw a spanner in the works, destabilizing the gut and potentially leading to diseases such as type-2 diabetes and colon cancer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-types-of-gut-microbes">Two types of gut microbes</h2>



<p>The constant tug-of-war between PCS and TCS is crucial. Their numbers keep each other in check, maintaining a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tool-detects-changes-in-gut-health-to-help-prevent-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healthy gut environment</a>. </p>



<p>However, outside factors like diet and lifestyle can upset this delicate balance. TCS, though typically low in number, can rapidly multiply under certain conditions, outmuscling our beneficial PCS.</p>



<p>The troublemakers, TCS, thrive on sugar and xenobiotics - substances foreign to living systems like pesticides and food additives. In contrast, the good PCS grow stronger with a diet high in protein and fiber.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-personalized-diets">Power of personalized diets</h2>



<p>This breakthrough discovery suggests a roadmap to maintaining gut health: personalized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-influence-our-social-behavior-and-sense-of-fairness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet plans</a> that cater to PCS and stifle the growth of TCS. </p>



<p>By feeding the beneficial PCS and suppressing the detrimental TCS, we could potentially prevent diseases and boost gut health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-microbes-and-disease-prevention">Gut microbes and disease prevention </h2>



<p>"The power of the gut microbiome and the dynamic pace of it in health and disease is well known. Our study shows that while the balance of these microbes can change over time, we can predict how these changes happen," said Dr. Saeed Shoaie, group leader in Systems Biology at <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King's College London</a>.</p>



<p>"Even bacteria that are usually found in low numbers can suddenly increase, while the beneficial ones might decrease. Although these shifts in the gut don't always cause immediate symptoms, even a short period of imbalance can leave a lasting impact."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disruption-in-the-gut-microbe-balance">Disruption in the gut microbe balance</h2>



<p>According to Dr. Shoaie, a disruption in the balance of gut microbes can lead to harmful changes in the gut environment that may persist, potentially contributing to the development of various diseases over time. </p>



<p>"Moreover, we showed that transient bugs can rapidly grow under specific conditions and produce toxins," said Dr. Shoaie.</p>



<p>"This finding suggests that understanding the proportion of these two types of species categories can help for a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-linked-to-younger-colon-cancer-patients/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personalized diet plan</a>. These two categories of microbes can act as potential markers to check the success of the dietary plan, which could be important for patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-understanding-of-disease">A new understanding of disease</h2>



<p>Dr. Sunjae Lee, the first author of the paper, noted that the new categorizations of gut microbes will change the way researchers understand disease and think of new ways to build effective treatments.</p>



<p>"By including these labels in a freely available Gut Microbiome Atlas that identifies gut bacteria appearing in individuals with 23 separate diseases across 19 countries, we can share this work with the world," said Dr. Lee.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-personalized-nutrition-for-gut-microbes">Personalized nutrition for gut microbes</h2>

<p>In a constantly changing world, animals, including humans, must adapt quickly to their environment and make decisions that lead to the best possible outcomes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Typically, this type of learning occurs through direct experience, where animals rely on past experiences involving the same choices when faced with a decision between two specific options.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-balancing-experience-and-knowledge">Balancing experience and knowledge</h2>



<p>However, animals with more advanced brains, such as apes and monkeys, are capable of inferring the outcome of a decision based on their knowledge of similar past situations, even if they have not directly experienced those particular options before.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This means that decision-making often involves a balance between experience-based strategies and knowledge-based strategies. In <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visually-striking-primate-features-ease-tension-and-reduce-conflict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a>, the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is responsible for managing this balance. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-brain-s-role-in-decision-making-nbsp">The brain’s role in decision-making&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The orbitofrontal cortex not only plays a direct role in decision-making but also helps to “update” the internal values primates use to evaluate the potential benefits of any given option.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, the OFC is essential for assessing options that an individual has not directly experienced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite this understanding, the precise roles of the OFC in decision-making and whether these roles rely on separate neuronal pathways have remained unclear and difficult to study.</p>



<p>Fortunately, a research team from Japan has made significant progress in shedding light on this issue.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-selectively-activating-neuronal-pathways-nbsp">Selectively activating neuronal pathways&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team was led by Kei Oyama and Takafumi Minamimoto from the <a href="https://www.qst.go.jp/site/qst-english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology</a>. </p>



<p>The researchers used a cutting-edge approach they previously developed to selectively activate and deactivate different neuronal pathways originating from the OFC in monkeys during specially designed behavioral tasks. This innovative method allowed the experts to uncover the independent functions of these pathways.</p>



<p>In these behavioral experiments, macaque monkeys were presented with two images to choose from, and depending on their choice, they received a predetermined amount of juice as a reward. The monkeys quickly learned to associate specific images with the amount of juice they would receive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-capacity-to-learn-from-experience-nbsp">Capacity to learn from experience&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To further test the monkeys' decision-making abilities, the researchers periodically changed the set of images presented and reversed the reward values, meaning the worst options became the best and vice versa.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These tasks assessed the monkeys’ capacity to learn from experience (via trial and error) and to handle familiar situations (via knowledge-based inference).</p>



<p>As the monkeys performed these tasks, the researchers employed a genetically introduced chemical switch called a chemogenetic receptor, which could turn specific OFC neurons on or off upon the administration of a drug.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to guide their procedures, the team locally injected a drug to temporarily silence distinct neuronal pathways originating from the OFC.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-specific-functions-of-the-neuronal-pathways-nbsp">Specific functions of the neuronal pathways&nbsp;</h2>



<p>By observing changes in the monkeys' performance, the researchers determined the specific functions of these pathways.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts discovered that the OFC pathway connecting to the caudate nucleus is critical for experience-based adaptation, while the pathway linking to the mediodorsal thalamus plays a key role in knowledge-based adaptation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-decision-making-in-humans">Understanding decision-making in humans</h2>



<p>Given that monkey brains are remarkably similar to human brains in structure, the study's findings hold important implications for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-communicate-to-support-decision-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human behavior</a>.</p>



<p>“One key implication of our work is that it could help explain why individuals approach the same situation in different ways. Some people may rely more on trial-and-error, while others prefer a more systematic approach based on prior knowledge,” Minamimoto explained.</p>



<p>“These differences in thinking styles, or 'thought patterns,' might be linked to how each person's brain activates these specific circuits, and understanding these variations could help us develop personalized strategies for improving decision-making and problem-solving skills for those who might struggle with one particular type of thinking.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Understanding the specific roles of brain structures also has significant implications for the study of neuropathologies and psychiatric disorders.</p>



<p>“Our findings could contribute to new treatments for mental and neurological disorders like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocd-disconnect-knowledge-action/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">obsessive-compulsive disorder</a>, where patients have difficulty adapting to changing situations,” said Oyama.</p>



<p>“By targeting the specific brain circuits involved in these two strategies, we may be able to create more effective therapies that help restore balanced thinking.”</p>



<p>Furthermore, the research has potential applications in the fields of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-boosts-creativity-but-reduces-variety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial intelligence</a> and robotics, where insights into brain circuits could inspire the development of more adaptable systems capable of switching between different problem-solving methods depending on the situation.</p>



<p>Although the brain remains one of the most complex puzzles in the known universe, studies like this represent important progress toward a deeper understanding of how it operates, both in humans and other animals.</p>

<p>Ants have many fascinating things to teach us. Most recently, scientists discovered that ants employ safeguards such as "social distancing" measures to protect their colonies from diseases.</p>



<p>In a recent paper presented by a group of passionate biologists, they shared their discovery of how black garden ants create and implement this impressive strategy to keep their nests, and consequently their colonies, safe from infections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ant-s-immune-system">Ant's immune system</h2>



<p>Previous research has indicated that certain animals adapt their behavior to cut down the spread of infections. </p>



<p>For instance, we humans, to prevent an infection from spreading like wildfire, might isolate parts of our homes or establish quarantine zones in hospitals. </p>



<p>But it appears we're not the only species to alter our surroundings for the sake of health. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/larger-ant-colonies-drove-the-evolution-of-worker-castes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Our tiny friends</a>, the black garden ants, have a similar strategy up their sleeve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ant-tunnels-prevent-spread-of-diseases">Ant tunnels prevent spread of diseases</h2>



<p>The research team, from the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, embarked on a field trip to collect black garden ants and created 20 colonies in their lab. Once the ants had a day to get used to their new setting, another <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-fill-a-150-year-gap-in-biodiversity-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">group of ants</a> was added to their colonies.</p>



<p>Here's the catch -- half of the newly added ants were infected with a fungus. Observations were made through cameras and micro-CT scanners to study the ant's behavior and to analyze the structure of the ant tunnels.</p>



<p>It was interesting to see that ants in the colonies where infected ants were introduced started digging new tunnels more quickly. </p>



<p>After six days, there was a notable increase in the distance between the tunnels in the infected nests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ants-disease-survival-strategy">Ants' disease survival strategy</h2>



<p>The ants displayed strategic maneuvering as well. The queen, food, and brooding area were placed in a less <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-are-shifting-to-new-habitats-to-cope-with-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">central location</a>. </p>



<p>Also, the infected ants were seen spending most of their time on the surface of the colony, limiting their interaction with healthy ants.</p>



<p>Why all these changes? Well, they are preventive measures. These ants alter their nests to prevent the spread of the infecting fungus, shielding the colony from the potential threat.</p>



<p>To better understand this intriguing behavior, our Bristol scientists conducted disease transmission simulations. This accelerated the spread of disease in the simulated environment.</p>



<p>They discovered that the ants' techniques helped minimize the fungal load in the colony and significantly improved its chances of survival.</p>



<p>With a practical approach, the ants teach us more about their species and disease prevention methods.</p>

<p>Experts in South Africa have identified an outbreak of rabies in seals. This marks the first time the virus has been found to spread among marine mammals.</p>



<p>Rabies, which affects land mammals and is capable of human transmission, is known for its near 100% fatality rate post symptoms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rabies-in-seals">Rabies in seals</h2>



<p>Rabies typically spreads via saliva, either through bites or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-wildlife-overlap-is-rapidly-rising-across-the-globe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">simply grooming</a>. The most common hosts have been raccoons, coyotes, foxes, jackals, and domestic dogs. So, it was a shock when this deadly virus was found among Cape fur seals along South Africa's coast.</p>



<p>In the early 1980s, there was an isolated case where a ringed seal in Norway's Svalbard islands was found to have rabies.</p>



<p>But, unlike the recent outbreak in South Africa, there was no evidence of the disease spreading further among those seals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unusual-aggressiveness-in-seals">Unusual aggressiveness in seals</h2>



<p>Dr. Lesley van Helden, a <a href="https://www.westerncape.gov.za/directories/facilities/1084" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">state veterinarian</a>, revealed that at least 24 Cape fur seals were either found dead or had to be euthanized due to rabies.</p>



<p>However, this discovery wouldn't have come to light without the help of a dog that got bitten by a seal on a Cape Town beach, leading to the testing of 135 seal carcasses collected since 2021. With 20 more samples collected and tested, more positives emerged.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-was-rabies-passed-to-seals">How was rabies passed to seals?</h2>



<p>The experts are still scratching their heads, trying to figure out how the rabies was passed to the seals, and if the disease is spreading among their large colonies.</p>



<p>Greg Hofmeyr, a marine biologist, admits that "it's all very, very new" and that they are looking at a lot of unknowns. But where does that leave us?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncovering-the-origin-of-the-outbreak">Uncovering the origin of the outbreak </h2>



<p>Approximately 2 million seals migrate between South Africa, Namibia, and Angola along Africa's coast. Van Helden suspects that the seals might have contracted rabies from jackals in Namibia. </p>



<p>Interestingly, the genetic makeup of the rabies virus found in the seals showed a close match with the rabies in black-backed jackals in Namibia.</p>



<p>The virus isn't just established in the seals - it's also being transmitted between them through bites. So, the high density of seals, particularly in Cape Town, is alarming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-controlling-rabies-in-seals">Controlling rabies in seals</h2>



<p>Seals, who happen to be quite the celebrities in Cape Town harbors, have been excessively aggressive over the last three years and responsible for more attacks on people. </p>



<p>Although no human cases of rabies have been recorded, the increase in seal attacks prompted city authorities to start a vaccination program for seals.</p>



<p>While the situation is under careful scrutiny by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the long-term transmission dynamics can't be predicted. </p>



<p>Not to mention, the success of the seal vaccination program is based on a presumption about its effectiveness since it has never been tested. There are also logistical questions about how to vaccinate seals along a coast that spans more than 3,500 kilometers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-path-forward">The path forward</h2>



<p>Now that rabies has been discovered in Cape fur seals, a comprehensive approach to monitoring and research is needed.</p>



<p>Experts are advocating for increased surveillance within seal populations and cross-border collaborations with Namibia and Angola to understand the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-is-killing-thousands-of-seals-and-sea-lions-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">larger geographical impact</a>.</p>



<p>Research efforts are also concentrating on developing diagnostic tools that can rapidly and accurately assess the presence of rabies in marine mammals. </p>



<p>Scientists hope that adaptive management practices will arise from these studies, contributing to a framework that ensures the safety of both seals and humans alike.</p>

<p>While the occurrence of rabies in seals represents uncharted territory, it is a vivid reminder of the complexities of disease ecology at the intersection of wildlife and human environments. </p>

<p>The challenge now is for the scientific community to unravel the mysteries of this outbreak and devise strategies to prevent future incidences.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glue-in-the-animal-kingdom-nbsp">Glue in the animal kingdom&nbsp;</h2>



<p>But what makes some skin secretions stickier than others, and why has this trait evolved multiple times throughout amphibian history?</p>



<p>Adhesives, or materials that help stick things together, are ubiquitous. In everyday life, people use sticky notes or reliable rolls of tape. But what about glue in the animal kingdom? How is it used, and how does it work?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-use-of-biological-adhesives-nbsp">The use of biological adhesives&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the context of glue-producing organisms, the term “biological adhesives” is used. These are naturally secreted materials found in a wide variety of species, with many playing vital roles in the organism’s survival.</p>



<p>The uses of these biological adhesives are as diverse as the animals producing them, including substrate attachment (as seen in sessile marine organisms like mussels, barnacles, and tubeworms), locomotion (such as the movement of starfish across the ocean floor), and prey capture (as demonstrated by spiders’ silk).</p>



<p>The broad taxonomic distribution of adhesive materials across several anciently diverged lineages reflects their immense utility and adaptive value.</p>



<p>Notably, many examples of biological adhesives come from invertebrates. But what about species more familiar to humans, such as tetrapods?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antipredator-adaptation-among-amphibians-nbsp">Antipredator adaptation among amphibians&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Herpetologists often recount stories about encountering frogs that excrete large amounts of slime, which rapidly becomes sticky, much like superglue. Hands stick together, the frog sticks to the hands - a very sticky situation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Though these stories are often anecdotal, literature on this phenomenon is relatively scarce. However, the lack of research does not make the accounts any less true.</p>



<p>Skin-secreted chemicals are the most widespread form of antipredator adaptation among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/over-40-of-amphibians-face-extinction-due-to-escalating-climate-threats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amphibians</a>, and in a few species, this mechanism manifests as glue. </p>



<p>When stressed, the amphibian discharges a viscous fluid from its back that quickly solidifies into a sticky mass, functioning as a powerful defense tool.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deterring-predators-with-glue">Deterring predators with glue</h2>



<p>The glue incapacitates <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/conspicuous-frogs-have-big-brains-to-evade-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predators</a>, often snakes, by clogging their mouths and preventing them from swallowing the amphibian. The predator eventually abandons its attack due to the high energetic cost of overcoming the glue.</p>



<p>While most biochemical research has focused on toxic skin secretions, such as poisons, the study of glue remains limited. One reason for this gap may be that glue is a rare feature in frogs, evolving sporadically in species that are distantly related on the evolutionary tree.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glue-as-a-defense-mechanism-nbsp">Glue as a defense mechanism&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Frog glue has been discovered in different parts of the world, yet its absence in most species, including close relatives, is notable.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, a glue-producing frog in Madagascar may not share the island with other glue-producing amphibians from different lineages. Instead, similar sticky secretions are found in frogs distributed across regions like Australia or South America.</p>



<p>A recent study, published in <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-49917-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Communications</em></a>, explored how glue as a defense mechanism evolved in some frogs but not others. This investigation focused on the tomato frog, <em>Dyscophus guineti</em>, which is endemic to Madagascar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-frog-glue-stick">What makes frog glue stick?</h2>



<p>The researchers integrated functional, molecular, and evolutionary analyses to understand what makes frog glue stick. They identified two key proteins that interact within the glue to sustain its adhesive and cohesive strength.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One protein, PRIT (a large glycoprotein), has a glue-specific role and contains copies of an evolutionarily conserved domain found in many extracellular proteins.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The second protein is a smaller, glycan-binding member of the galectin family, which is ubiquitous across many animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-structural-flexibility-of-frog-clue">Structural flexibility of frog clue</h2>



<p>The findings align with previous studies highlighting the importance of glycoproteins and glycan-binding proteins in other animal glues, though their interactions and mechanisms of action had remained unresolved until recently.</p>



<p>Structural models showed that while PRIT’s conserved domains are well-defined, the intervening regions are structurally heterogeneous, in contrast to most non-adhesive proteins, which are rigid and well-structured.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This structural flexibility allows frog glue to adapt to different surfaces, such as the oral epithelia of a predator. When pressure is applied - like a predator's bite - the fluid slime quickly transitions into a tough adhesive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-basis-of-frog-clue">Genetic basis of frog clue</h2>



<p>Frog glue shares a similarity with common sticky tape in that both are pressure-sensitive, requiring compressive force to activate their sticking power.</p>



<p>With the glue proteins identified, the study explored the genetic and structural changes that led to the evolution of glue in distantly related frog lineages.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Interestingly, neither PRIT nor galectins are unique to <em>D. guineti</em>, or frogs in general. These proteins are present in all animals, including humans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the architecture of the PRIT gene evolved early in amphibian ancestors, meaning glue genes existed before the glue itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parallel-evolution-of-frog-glue">Parallel evolution of frog glue</h2>



<p>Another glue-producing frog, the Mozambique rain frog (<em>Breviceps mossambicus</em>), also encodes a PRIT gene. Despite diverging around 100 million years ago, both <em>Dyscophus</em> and <em>Breviceps</em> descended from a poisonous ancestor, with their skin secretions evolving independently into glues.</p>



<p>The study also found that shifting gene expression contributed to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-type-of-parallel-evolution-found-in-island-bats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parallel evolution</a> of frog glue. PRITs and galectins exhibited elevated expression levels in both glue-producing species, suggesting that regulatory changes played a crucial role in the evolution of this adhesive trait.</p>



<p>Unlike other glue-producing animals that evolved unique adhesion methods, these highly diverged frog lineages repeatedly recruited the same pre-existing genes by enhancing their expression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research represents the first detailed analysis of a vertebrate defense glue, expanding the understanding of these unique adaptations and paving the way for the development of new adhesive technologies.</p>



<p>The effectiveness of animal slimes as surgical sealants has already been demonstrated using slug defensive glue. Now, with insights into how frog glue functions, there is potential to develop new biological adhesives for medical applications, including rapid-acting surgical sealants.</p>



<p>Frog glue derivatives could one day become as essential in medical practices as sticky tape is in everyday households.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
