<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in "magic mushrooms," is rapidly capturing the attention of healthcare experts and policymakers as a potential treatment for chronic depression.</p>



<p>As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers approving psilocybin for depression treatment in the near future, we are inching closer to what could be a transformative milestone in modern medicine.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-would-benefit-from-psilocybin-therapy">Who would benefit from psilocybin therapy?</h2>



<p>The possibility of legalizing psilocybin therapy brings a compelling question to the forefront: how many individuals could truly benefit?</p>



<p>A peer-reviewed study led by researchers at <a href="https://www.emory.edu/home/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Emory University</a>, the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a>, and <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Berkeley</a>, offers unprecedented insight.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that psilocybin-assisted therapy for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-a-history-of-depression-tend-to-process-more-negative-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depression</a> could have a substantial impact in the United States.</p>



<p>The study estimates that between 56 and 62 percent of patients currently receiving treatment for depression - about 5.1 to 5.6 million individuals - could qualify for this therapy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-potential-of-psilocybin-therapy">The potential of psilocybin therapy</h2>



<p>“Our findings suggest that if the FDA gives the green light, psilocybin-assisted therapy has the potential to help millions of Americans who suffer from depression,” said Syed Fayzan Rab, an Emory MD candidate and lead author of the study.</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed national data, revealing that nearly 15 million adults in the U.S. are affected by depression, with about 9 million currently receiving treatment each year.</p>



<p>Using recent clinical trial criteria, the experts assessed this population to determine eligibility for psilocybin therapy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eligibility-for-psilocybin-treatment">Eligibility for psilocybin treatment </h2>



<p>The findings present a range of possibilities. A conservative estimate indicates that 24% of patients will be eligible if strict trial criteria is applied, while a more moderate scenario estimates that 56% of patients will be eligible under real-world medical conditions.</p>



<p>At the higher end, 62% of patients could qualify for psilocybin treatment, factoring in additional considerations such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/korean-red-ginseng-may-alleviate-alcohol-addiction-study-reveals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol</a> and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/child-maltreatment-triples-the-risk-of-substance-use/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">substance use</a> disorders.</p>



<p>Notably, the inclusion of these co-occurring conditions, which evidence suggests psilocybin may treat effectively, accounted for nearly a third of the increased eligibility. </p>



<p>Even so, the 62% figure might still be an understatement, as it only includes individuals who are already receiving treatment and does not consider the potential influx of new patients.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-in-real-world-implementation">Challenges in real-world implementation</h2>



<p>While the potential impact of psilocybin therapy is promising, the researchers caution that several real-world factors could limit its widespread adoption. </p>



<p>“While our analysis is a crucial first step, we've only scratched the surface in understanding the true public health impact psilocybin therapy may have,” said study co-author Dr. Charles Raison.</p>



<p>Insurance coverage, regional access to care, and availability of trained practitioners could significantly affect its uptake.</p>



<p>Moreover, if the FDA approval includes off-label use for conditions beyond depression, the demand for psilocybin therapy could surge unpredictably.</p>



<p>As the psychedelic renaissance continues to gain momentum, further research will be critical in refining our understanding and ensuring equitable access to this potentially transformative treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-the-therapy">The science behind the therapy</h2>

<p>However, while the therapeutic potential is exciting, psilocybin therapy requires careful supervision in controlled settings, ensuring that patients receive proper guidance before, during, and after treatment. </p>



<p>The success of psilocybin-assisted therapy hinges not just on the chemical effects but also on the therapeutic environment, often referred to as the "set and setting," which significantly influences the patient's experience and outcomes.</p>



<p>As research into psychedelics continues to evolve, psilocybin remains at the forefront, holding promise as a potentially transformative treatment for a range of mental health disorders. Yet, questions about the scalability, accessibility, and long-term effects of such therapies remain. </p>

<p>This environmental upheaval has brought global agriculture to the forefront, as its impacts are becoming impossible to overlook. </p>



<p>From shifting weather patterns to increasing pressure on food systems, the industry is in the crosshairs of a rapidly changing planet.</p>



<p>Even more alarmingly, research published in the journal <em>Science</em> suggests that climate change and agriculture are locked in a dangerous dance - one that threatens to spiral into a self-perpetuating feedback loop.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-agriculture-and-public-health">Agriculture and public health </h2>



<p>As climate change intensifies, it forces farmers to adopt practices that could further degrade the environment, creating a vicious cycle that amplifies both global warming and the strain on our food supply.</p>



<p>Dr. Lewis Ziska is an associate professor of environmental health sciences at <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia Mailman School of Public Health</a>.</p>



<p>"It is important to recognize that the impact of agriculture on public health, from pesticide usage to water quality, is almost certainly going to be exacerbated with climate change," noted Dr. Ziska. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-rise-in-agricultural-emissions">Rapid rise in agricultural emissions</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenhouse gas emissions</a> from agriculture have skyrocketed at an alarming rate, and are now 18 times higher than they were in the 1960s. Agriculture has become a significant contributor to about 30% of the total global warming effect.</p>



<p>This rapid rise in emissions emphasizes the urgent need for changes in farming practices to curb their environmental impact.</p>



<p>A significant portion of these emissions comes from excess fertilizer left on farm soils, which is broken down by bacteria into nitrous oxide - a potent greenhouse gas that is 300 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-environmentally-friendly-agriculture">Need for environmentally friendly agriculture </h2>



<p>The widespread use of synthetic fertilizers, combined with inefficient management practices, exacerbates the problem - pushing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a> closer to dangerous thresholds.</p>



<p>The stakes are high, with climate-agriculture feedback pathways poised to dramatically increase agricultural emissions.</p>



<p>"We need agriculture, but the future of humanity also requires that we reduce agriculture’s environmental harms," said David Tilman, a professor at the <a href="https://system.umn.edu/dearmn?gad_source=1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Minnesota</a> College of Biological Sciences and co-author of the study. </p>



<p>Professor Tilman emphasized the need for policies like a farm bill that rewards both food production and environmental stewardship.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unseen-consequences-of-climate-change">Unseen consequences of climate change</h2>



<p>Beyond rising temperatures, climate change affects agricultural practices by increasing water usage and scarcity, soil degradation, and emissions of nitrous oxide and methane. </p>



<p>The research team also found that pest pressure, biodiversity loss, and pollution from pesticides and nitrogen further complicate the issue.</p>



<p>The feedback loop between agriculture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/survey-mother-nature-is-more-likely-to-solve-climate-change-than-geoengineering/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> could make it nearly impossible to meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5–2 degrees Celsius.</p>

<p>Despite the challenges, the research offers hope. Emerging sustainable agricultural practices and technologies can significantly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-food-system-must-change-if-nations-hope-to-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reduce emissions</a> if implemented on a large scale.</p>



<p>By removing socioeconomic barriers, governments can make climate-resilient solutions more accessible to farmers and food producers.</p>



<p>The researchers emphasize the importance of exploring an integrated approach that includes farming efficiency and pollutants like nitrous oxide alongside <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-air-pollution-could-greatly-boost-carbon-sequestration-by-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sequestration</a>. </p>



<p>Practices such as precision fertilizer use, crop rotation, and nitrogen fixation can help prevent the climate-agriculture feedback loop from developing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transforming-agricultural-practices">Transforming agricultural practices</h2>



<p>To ensure a more stable future for agriculture, stakeholders should accelerate the adaptation of climate-friendly techniques, such as agrivoltaics, perennial crop integration, and on-farm robots. </p>

<p>As the agricultural industry grapples with the escalating effects of climate change, it becomes clear that a coordinated, global effort is essential to avoid the destructive feedback loop between agriculture and the environment. </p>



<p>Collaboration between governments, farmers, researchers, and private industries is vital to ensure the widespread adoption of sustainable farming practices. </p>



<p>Incentivizing climate-friendly agriculture, promoting education, and investing in innovative technologies like genome editing and precision farming are just a few strategies that can significantly reduce agriculture’s environmental impact.</p>



<p>In the face of these challenges, the path forward requires bold actions. Governments must prioritize policies that support both agricultural productivity and environmental conservation, while farmers need access to the tools and knowledge to implement more efficient practices. </p>

<p>You know that feeling, when you lock eyes with a pooch and feel an unspoken connection? Well, it's not just a feeling, it turns out. Experts have found out that human and canine brains sync up in these moments, proving we share a more profound connection with dogs at a neurological level.</p>



<p>Researchers in China have broken new ground, discovering a unique inter-species neural synchronization between humans and dogs. The research builds upon past studies that show similar brain activity synchronization among humans, particularly when they communicate or work together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-activities-of-dogs-and-humans">Brain activities of dogs and humans</h2>



<p>The research team, led by biologist Wei Ren from the <a href="https://english.cas.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, employed a set of ingenious experiments to uncover this phenomenon.</p>



<p>Teams of human-dog pairs were put together and had their brain activities recorded. To do so, electrodes were placed over their heads. These pairs then engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-can-imitate-human-actions-from-2d-videos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nonverbal communication</a> such as mutual gazing, or a friendly pat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-test-and-control">Test and control </h2>



<p>In one set of tests, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interacting-with-dogs-can-ease-physical-pain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human-dog</a> duos interacted with each other, while during other tests they shared the same space but did not interact. </p>



<p>The researchers noticed an increase in inter-brain correlations in the frontal and parietal regions of the brain during the mutual gaze.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-frontal-and-parietal-brain-regions">Frontal and parietal brain regions</h2>



<p>In human brains, joint attention is associated with activity in both the frontal and parietal regions. Previous research has shown that human frontal lobe activity increases when we pet our dogs, signaling emotional engagement and focused attention. </p>



<p>However, it was unclear whether similar activity was happening in dogs' brains. The study has finally shed light on this unknown.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-and-dog-brains-sync-up">Human and dog brains sync up</h2>



<p>To pinpoint whether the human or dog was initiating the neural sync, the researchers used a unique mathematical algorithm to analyze the data.</p>



<p>The results indicated that it was the human brains that led this harmonized neural activity — revealing that the more we interact, the stronger our bond grows.</p>



<p>When participants were asked to simultaneously pet the dogs and gaze into their eyes, the study found even greater connectivity in the inter-brain activity.</p>



<p>"We observed that inter-brain correlations in frontal and parietal regions dramatically increased during mutual gaze," noted the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-do-dog-brains-mirror-humans">Do dog brains mirror humans?</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study has implications beyond just understanding our bond with dogs. Experts hypothesize that social cognition deficits found in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) might result from diminished brain synchronization.</p>



<p>To test this, the team repeated the experiments, but this time with dogs that exhibited similar characteristics to humans with ASD.</p>



<p>In this new set of tests, the human-dog pairs showed lessened synchronization, which suggested reduced joint attention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lsd-and-neural-synchronization">LSD and neural synchronization?</h2>



<p>Diving deeper into the ASD connection, dogs with ASD-like characteristics were given a dose of LSD. This drug has been known to enhance social behavior in mice in past studies.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the LSD seemed to improve the dogs' synchronization with their paired humans in this study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-oxytocin-the-bonding-hormone">Role of oxytocin - the bonding hormone</h2>



<p>Oxytocin, often dubbed the "love hormone," plays a crucial role in establishing social bonds, including those between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-provide-insight-into-human-cognition-and-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humans and dogs</a>. </p>



<p>This hormone is released in response to close interactions and has been shown to promote trust and social connections. The study further revealed that both human and dog brains experience increased oxytocin levels during mutual interactions, such as petting and eye contact.</p>



<p>This hormonal surge not only strengthens the emotional connection but also supports the neural synchronization observed in the experiments. </p>



<p>The findings highlight the biological underpinnings of the human-dog bond and suggest that oxytocin might be a key player in facilitating the enhanced inter-species neural connectivity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study">Broader implications of the study </h2>



<p>While more extensive research is called for, this study contributes significantly to our understanding of the social deficits associated with ASD. It suggests that such dogs, along with studying the brains of humans, could provide valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying these social deficits.</p>



<p>The research also opens up the possibility of using inter-brain activity as potential biomarkers for diagnosing ASD. <p>Recent research took a plunge into a tale about the discovery of a new species of fish that's less than 2 centimeters long and carries a 'grumpy' demeanor. The tiny creature sports a perpetually disgruntled face, hence its fitting name: the grumpy dwarfgoby.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fierce-grumpy-dwarfgoby">Fierce grumpy dwarfgoby</h2>



<p>The grumpy dwarfgoby, in spite of its small size, doesn’t do subtle. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dietary-shift-to-forage-fish-could-prevent-millions-of-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a>’s large canines and intense expression pull off a macho vibe. </p>



<p>"I imagine in its own tiny world, it is a fearsome predator. Its grumpy expression and large canines certainly make it look the part, despite its small size," remarks Lucía Pombo-Ayora, who gifted the species its unique common name.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-red-in-the-deep-camouflage-or-statement">Red in the deep: Camouflage or statement?</h2>



<p>What's fascinating about the grumpy dwarfgoby is its coloration strategy. The species boasts a vibrant red color, which sticks out to us -- however, in their natural environment, it's a perfect camouflage.</p>



<p>They frequent sections of coral reefs blanketed in red coralline algae, and use the algae as a hideout, hopping from one small hole or crevice to another. </p>



<p>Additionally, those large canines aren't just for show; they’re used to capture tiny invertebrates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-the-grumpy-dwarfgoby">Finding the grumpy dwarfgoby</h2>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Viktor Nunes Peinemann who was at the forefront of this discovery during a diving expedition intended to explore the diversity of coral reef <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-lionfish-global-domination-mediterranean-sea-marine-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishes</a>. </p>



<p>They first found specimens in Saudi Arabia's Farasan Banks, and later near Thuwal in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-fish-red-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Sea</a>. </p>

<p>Initially, the team believed they'd rediscovered the fiery dwarfgoby, <em>Sueviota pyrios</em>, a solitary specimen known from a 1972 collection. However, they were in for a fascinating surprise.</p>

<p>Upon further analysis, the team from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (<a href="https://www.kaust.edu.sa/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KAUST</a>) and the University of Washington (<a href="https://www.washington.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UW</a>) realized they were swimming in uncharted waters -- a brand-new species they'd never seen before.</p>



<p>"The ongoing discovery of distinctive new species like this grumpy dwarfgoby shows how much biodiversity remains undiscovered in the Red Sea," underlines Peinemann.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eroding-edifice-of-biodiversity">Eroding edifice of biodiversity</h2>



<p>The Red Sea is celebrated for its rich endemic species, with our little grump adding to its roster. However, the sea's environment has taken a severe hit due to climate change, leading to widespread coral bleaching and mortality. </p>



<p>The fact we're still discovering new species in this volatile ecosystem underlines the urgency for continued research and conservation efforts.</p>



<p>"This is concerning given the recent environmental changes in the region. In some cases, species could go extinct before we even describe them," Peinemann encapsulates the issues and stakes aptly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-the-grumpy-dwarfgoby">Preserving the grumpy dwarfgoby</h2>



<p>In light of the ecological challenges that beset the Red Sea, initiatives to preserve its unique marine life have never been more critical. </p>

<p>Each new species we uncover should be a reminder of the delicate intricacies that make up our planet's biodiversity, and the imperative to shield them from harm.</p>

<p>A new study suggests that microplastics can infiltrate the base of the brain. The research team confirmed the presence of plastic particles and fibers in the olfactory bulbs of human cadavers.  </p>



<p>"The presence of microplastics in the human olfactory bulb suggests the olfactory pathway as a potential entry route for microplastics into the brain, highlighting the need for further research on their neurotoxic effects and implications for human health," noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-in-the-human-body">Microplastics in the human body</h2>



<p>Our lives are more intertwined with plastic than we realize. From our morning cup of coffee to the clothes we wear, plastic has stealthily slipped into almost every aspect of our daily lives. </p>



<p>Yet, there's another side to this story that's far less visible but markedly more invasive: the threat of microplastics. These tiny tormentors have made their way into our bodies.</p>



<p>The recent study on human cadavers was led by Luís Fernando Amato-Lourenço, a respected microplastics investigator at the <a href="https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Free University of Berlin</a>. The team discovered timy shards of plastic lodged in human nose tissue, precisely in the olfactory bulb.</p>



<p>This discovery poses the scary question, could these particles travel to other parts of the brain?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-evidence-of-our-plastic-crisis">More evidence of our plastic crisis </h2>



<p>The trajectory of these microplastic intrusions within our bodies is dictated by factors like their size, shape, and the body's defensive responses.</p>



<p>Logic suggests that the smaller the enemy, the easier it is for it to go unnoticed by our body's defense system to breach our brain and spinal cord. The study has confirmed that this is, in fact, the case. </p>



<p>For Phoebe Stapleton, a professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at <a href="https://www.rutgers.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rutgers University</a>, this revelation is but a reflection of our plastic cumulated reality.</p>



<p>“I’m not really surprised,” Stapleton told CNN. “I really do think that plastics are going to be in every place in the body that we look. This is just more evidence.”</p>



<p>Yet, not every scientist is buying into the microplastic scare. The skeptics demand concrete evidence and reliable studies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hazardous-chemicals-in-microplastics">Hazardous chemicals in microplastics</h2>



<p>A wave of recent studies is reinforcing one truth: our bodies are playing unwilling hosts to these nearly invisible invaders. </p>



<p>From unsuspected areas like our brain, testes, lung tissues to places as sacred as a mother's milk and a child's placenta, these minuscule enemies, smaller than a strand of hair, are everywhere.</p>



<p>What really ups the ante of their threat level is the sinister cargo they carry: hazardous chemicals such as bisphenols, phthalates, flame retardants, and heavy metals.</p>



<p>Sherri “Sam” Mason is the director of sustainability at Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pennsylvania. </p>



<p>“The chemicals can be carried to your liver and your kidney and your brain and even make their way across the placental boundary and end up in an unborn child,” noted Mason, who was not involved in the study. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-and-olfactory-bulbs">Microplastics and olfactory bulbs</h2>



<p>The recent study brought to light microplastics in the olfactory bulbs of more than half of the cadavers studied. However, the experts could not pinpoint the source of exposure or why only some cadavers carried this evidence.</p>



<p>Amato-Lourenço hypothesizes that a swollen nasal lining might pave the way for these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastic-pollution-found-in-every-aquatic-species-tested/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">particles</a>. According to him, airborne microplastics could originate from synthetic fabrics and common household items.</p>



<p>The most frequently found culprit was polypropylene, a commonly used plastic that is generally considered safe. But a conflicting study presents an alarming connection between polypropylene microplastics and accelerated progression of breast cancer in human bodies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-concern">A global concern</h2>



<p>Amid this alarming reality, there's a shred of hope. Guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that we can minimize our chemical exposure by reducing the use of disposable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-microplastics-are-here-to-stay-so-what-can-we-do-now/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastics</a> and switching to reusable alternatives.</p>



<p>Microplastics are a global concern, as they continue to spread across continents and ecosystems. They are polluting our marine ecosystems, threatening our soil through wastewater sludge, and indirectly affecting us through seafood consumption.</p>



<p>The scale of this problem demands a united global response and comprehensive policy-making.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>The disturbing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-pose-a-greater-threat-to-some-ocean-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">presence of microplastics</a> bears crucial importance on the need to strategize effective ways to minimize exposure and comprehend the long-term health implications.</p>



<p>By harmonizing scientific exploration with practical interventions, we can aim to mitigate microplastic pollution.</p>



<p>The discovery of microplastics in the base of the human brain is a wake-up call. Until the scientific community reaches a solid consensus on the impact of this invasion, it's up to us to limit our exposure and take proactive measures.</p>

<p>The beauty of nature lies in its intricate, minute details, and a small yet profoundly significant part of this beauty is owed to the diverse microbes residing in the mysterious depths of our oceans.</p>



<p>These tiny, often-overlooked beings, each with their own unique food preferences, play a crucial role in the vast, complex, and seemingly invisible process of carbon sequestration, a process vital to regulating Earth's climate and supporting life on the planet.</p>



<p>Recent insights from a Science publication titled <em>"Microbial dietary preference and interactions affect the export of lipids to the deep ocean"</em> shed light on how the dietary preferences of bacteria influence the efficiency of carbon storage in the oceanic depths.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-microbes-dietary-preferences">Ocean microbes' dietary preferences</h2>



<p>"In our study, we found incredible variation in what the different microbes preferred to digest. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-form-memories-and-pass-them-on-to-future-generations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bacteria</a> seem to have very distinct diet preferences for different lipid molecules," explained Benjamin Van Mooy, senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (<a href="https://www.whoi.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHOI</a>).</p>



<p>"This has real implications for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-a-new-ocean-carbon-sequestration-process/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sequestration</a> and the biological carbon pump." </p>



<p>The biological carbon pump refers to the process where sinking biomass transports carbon from the ocean surface to the deep ocean.</p>



<p>Lipids, carbon-rich fatty acid biomolecules, make up about 5 to 30% of the surface ocean’s particulate organic matter, serving as a crucial component in marine ecosystems.</p>



<p>These lipids not only act as energy storage but also play a key role in facilitating essential cellular functions for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-microbes-can-tell-us-about-global-changes-in-the-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes that inhabit the ocean</a>.</p>



<p>As the organic matter sinks to the deep sea, diverse and complex communities of resident microbes degrade and utilize these lipids, significantly influencing global CO2 concentrations and contributing to the regulation of Earth's climate system.</p>



<p>Understanding this process is crucial to improve our ability to forecast global carbon fluxes in changing ocean regimes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-and-deep-ocean-carbon-regulation">Microbes and deep ocean carbon regulation</h2>



<p>"Bacteria isolated from marine particles exhibited distinct dietary preferences, ranging from selective to promiscuous degraders," the study explains. </p>



<p>These dietary choices modulate lipid degradation and, consequently, affect how efficiently lipids are transported through the ocean's mesopelagic zone, which extends about 200-1000 meters below the surface.</p>



<p>"I was thrilled to see how much there is to learn about the functioning of the ocean by combining two technologies -- high-end chemical analysis and microscale imaging -- that have historically never been used together," noted co-author Roman Stocker, professor at <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zurich</a>.</p>



<p>"I believe that work at the interface between these exciting technologies will continue to yield important insights into how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-laid-the-foundation-for-early-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes shape our oceans</a>, now and into the future," he continued.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lipid-preferences-in-ocean-microbes">Lipid preferences in ocean microbes</h2>



<p>"Scientists are starting to understand that lipids in the ocean can vary significantly depending on different environments, such as the coast versus the open ocean, and the season," Van Mooy enthused.</p>



<p>Researchers can now begin to consider whether some regions efficiently sequester lipids, while others may see inefficient sequestration.</p>



<p>"What excites me about this paper is that it shows bacteria are not just eating any type of lipid but are very specialized and, like us, have specific food preferences," added Lars Behrendt, associate professor at <a href="https://www.uu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uppsala University</a>.</p>



<p>"This changes how we think about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shock-discovery-greenland-ice-sheet-is-teeming-with-microorganisms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microorganisms</a> consume food in their natural environment." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bacterial-communities-and-degradation-dynamics">Bacterial communities and degradation dynamics</h2>



<p>The study also examined how multispecies communities of bacteria affect degradation rates, revealing that co-cultures exhibit different dynamics compared to species in isolation. </p>



<p>This complexity emphasizes the importance of understanding microbial interactions in natural environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-and-the-huge-carbon-sink">Microbes and the huge carbon sink</h2>



<p>"<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-heatwaves-have-complex-effects-on-phytoplankton-food-web/">Phytoplankton</a> are the main reason the ocean is one of the biggest carbon sinks, absorbing as much carbon as all the plants on land combined," said Uria Alcolombri, senior lecturer at <a href="https://en.huji.ac.il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hebrew University of Jerusalem</a>. </p>



<p>These microscopic organisms and their interactions with deep-sea microbes play a crucial role in regulating global carbon levels.</p>

<p>When we consider the immense journey of pregnancy, it's no surprise that the body goes through significant changes to prepare for impending motherhood. </p>



<p>You're likely familiar with the physical changes; from the obvious growth of the belly, to the hormonal roller coaster that triggers mood swings, cravings and morning sickness. But here's something that probably didn't make it onto your radar: pregnancy changes the brain too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pregnancy-s-impact-on-brain">Pregnancy's impact on brain</h2>



<p>The complex hormonal shifts brought on by pregnancy have a profound impact on the brain, a sphere of human anatomy that's been relatively untouched in pregnancy studies. </p>



<p>A research team led by Professor Emily Jacobs from <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Barbara</a>, however, decided to navigate the uncharted waters to reveal an astonishing reality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-world-of-the-gestating-brain">Dynamic world of the gestating brain</h2>



<p>The project's aim was to understand the trajectory of brain changes across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pregnancy-may-speed-up-aging-in-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">span of pregnancy</a>. Unlike previous studies which presented before and after snapshots of the brain, this research monitored these changes as they happened. </p>



<p>The study revolved around a first-time mother, with her brain scanned at regular intervals from pre-pregnancy through to two years postpartum.</p>



<p>The meticulous approach allowed the researchers to record the dynamic reorganization of the participant's brain with remarkable clarity. It was a revelation, showcasing the impressive neuroplasticity of the adult brain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pregnancy-and-brain-gray-matter">Pregnancy and brain gray matter</h2>



<p>Perhaps the most striking finding lay in the changes in the brain's gray matter, the cerebral cortex. </p>



<p>As the hormones kicked in during pregnancy, the team observed a notable decrease in gray matter volume. While this may sound alarm bells, the researchers highlighted that a decrease in gray matter is not necessarily a negative scenario.</p>



<p>In fact, this fine-tuning of brain circuits is similar to what happens during puberty when adolescent brains start honing their skills. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-pregnancy-related-deaths-in-the-u-s-skyrocketing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pregnancy</a>, therefore, appears to be another significant period of cortical refinement in adulthood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-white-matter-in-the-brain">White matter in the brain</h2>



<p>Alongside changes in gray matter, the research team discovered an increase in white matter, which is primarily responsible for communication between different brain regions. </p>



<p>This increase peaked during the second trimester, returning to pre-pregnancy volumes around birth, providing yet another example of the brain's resilience.</p>

<p>This hormonal interplay is thought to enhance emotional regulation and maternal bonding, possibly as an evolutionary mechanism to ensure the well-being of both mother and child. </p>



<p>Researchers continue to explore this neuroendocrine symphony, seeking to uncover how these hormonal waves contribute to the holistic metamorphosis of a pregnant brain.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-chapter-in-neuroscience">New chapter in neuroscience</h2>



<p>What this study essentially does is give us the first-ever map of the human brain during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-and-nicotine-use-during-pregnancy-linked-to-infant-mortality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnancy</a>. It recognizes the tremendous changes, adaptations and resilience of the maternal brain. Around 140 million women experience pregnancy each year, making this subject anything but niche.</p>



<p>The dataset generated through this study serves as a solid foundation for future research. In particular, a better understanding of these changes could potentially help identify women at risk of postpartum depression, a condition affecting one in five women.</p>



<p>The team is already moving forward on this path with the Maternal Brain Project, a collaborative effort spanning UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and several research centers in Spain. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>“Experts in neuroscience, reproductive immunology, proteomics, and AI are joining forces to learn more than ever about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-hormones-during-pregnancy-may-affect-child-iq/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maternal brain</a>,” Jacobs said. “Together, we have an opportunity to tackle some of the most pressing and least understood problems in women’s health.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>After decades of efforts to curb global warming, scientists are now exploring ways to reverse climate change and potentially cool the planet. They are looking into geoengineering - strategies that manipulate Earth's systems to mitigate climate effects.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Geoengineering ideas include brightening clouds to reflect more sunlight, sinking lab-grown seaweed into the ocean to absorb carbon dioxide, or drilling holes into glaciers to slow sea level rise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complex-questions-surrounding-geoengineering-nbsp">Complex questions surrounding geoengineering&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.uchicago.edu/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago</a> has positioned itself at the forefront of this emerging field by recruiting physicist David Keith, who will lead a climate engineering program. </p>



<p>Keith plans to build a team of 10 tenure-track faculty and several young researchers. He emphasizes the need for collaboration to tackle the complex questions surrounding geoengineering.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot understand (geoengineering) with just a bunch of individual people working on this in an isolated way,” Keith explained. “We need to bring together a broad group of scholars and students to debate it in a much richer way.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-radiation-management-nbsp">Solar radiation management&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For a long time, manipulating Earth’s systems was considered taboo, as many scientists viewed it as a distraction from reducing carbon emissions. Some even deemed it too dangerous to explore.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The most controversial method is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/geoengineering-can-we-dim-the-sun-to-avoid-climate-tipping-points/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar radiation management</a>, which involves shooting aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight and cool the planet. Physicist Peter Irvine recently joined Keith's team at UChicago to study this method. </p>



<p>Solar geoengineering is expected to mimic the cooling effect of massive volcanic eruptions, such as the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia. That eruption cooled global temperatures and dimmed sunlight for years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Solar radiation management is the only (climate intervention) that could be deployed within a single presidential term,” Irvine said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geoengineering-is-becoming-a-necessary-option">Geoengineering is becoming a necessary option</h2>



<p>However, fears remain that promises of yet-to-be-developed technologies could be used by wealthy nations or fossil fuel companies to avoid reducing carbon emissions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With global emissions still rising and not being cut fast enough, some experts see geoengineering as a necessary option.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As microbiologist Manon Duret, a recent recruit to the UChicago initiative, puts it, “it's not going to happen. We're not going to decarbonize the world so easily. We need to start looking at other options.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-challenges-to-geoengineering">Practical challenges to geoengineering</h2>



<p>Duret will focus on practical challenges to geoengineering, such as material acquisition, logistics, and international regulations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Her husband, oceanographer B.B. Cael, will evaluate the risks, costs, and scalability of different geoengineering approaches. Both see geoengineering as a stopgap while society works on reducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-buying-time-to-address-larger-issues">Buying time to address larger issues</h2>



<p>Keith has been a leader in geoengineering research since the 1980s, launching one of the first companies to capture carbon dioxide from the air and leading <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a>’s efforts in solar interventions. </p>



<p>He argues that balancing emissions reduction with other societal priorities, such as equitable development, is essential.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Keith believes that cooling the Earth could buy society time to address these larger issues. “The ethical thing to do is to cut emissions a little more slowly,” he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risks-of-experimenting-with-the-stratosphere-nbsp">Risks of experimenting with the stratosphere&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Although solar geoengineering could reduce extreme weather events, it also carries significant risks. Irvine acknowledges that it might exacerbate droughts, increase acid rain, and thin the ozone layer. These unknowns could affect global food production and biodiversity.</p>



<p>Professor Liz Moyer, an atmospheric scientist at UChicago, shares concerns about experimenting with the stratosphere, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-aerosols-cool-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerosols</a> would be injected. </p>



<p>The stratosphere has seen unpredictable events in recent years, and Moyer cautions that tampering with it without proper monitoring could be dangerous.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If you're going to do experimental surgery and you haven't thought about what kind of technology you would need to monitor the patient, then you're not thinking about the problem carefully enough for me to trust you with my body,” she said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enormous-burden-on-future-generations">Enormous burden on future generations</h2>



<p>Solar geoengineering would require continuous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/survey-mother-nature-is-more-likely-to-solve-climate-change-than-geoengineering/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intervention</a> - shooting aerosols into the atmosphere every few years. </p>



<p>Stopping this process could lead to rapid warming, known as “termination shock.” <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a>’s Raymond Pierrehumbert, a former UChicago professor, warns that this creates “an enormous burden on the future.”</p>



<p>Pierrehumbert is among more than 500 scientists calling for an international non-use agreement on solar geoengineering. He worries about the lack of a global governing body to oversee the responsible deployment of such technologies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reckless-use-by-desperate-nations-nbsp">Reckless use by desperate nations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>On the other hand, Irvine believes that avoiding geoengineering research could lead to reckless use by desperate nations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The more it's suppressed, the greater the risk of a single nation or small group of nations pushing ahead independently in desperation,” he said.</p>



<p>While some countries like China have already experimented with altering weather patterns, most solar geoengineering research remains confined to computer models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, real-world testing has been difficult to approve. Two planned experiments, one in California and another in Sweden, were recently canceled due to public opposition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risks-and-benefits-of-geoengineering">Risks and benefits of geoengineering </h2>



<p>Keith, who was involved in the Swedish project, remains committed to studying geoengineering to understand its risks and benefits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>He argues that the public and politicians need rigorous research to make informed decisions about deploying such technologies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It's definitely not an elite club of scientists' job to decide what the public gets to know or not,” he said.</p>



<p>Still, Pierrehumbert cautions that small-scale experiments might offer a false sense of security. Full-scale deployment would be needed to fully understand the long-term risks of geoengineering. </p>



<p>“Scientists have a responsibility not to develop technology that could be threatening and destabilizing,” he explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-an-interdisciplinary-team-nbsp">Building an interdisciplinary team&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Despite these concerns, Moyer sees value in UChicago leading this conversation but stresses the importance of involving civil engineers, who are trained to account for risk in large-scale projects.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although Keith has plans to build an interdisciplinary team, so far, all hires have been in the geophysical sciences, and the university does not have a civil engineering department.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-facing-the-unknowns-of-climate-change">Facing the unknowns of climate change</h2>



<p>What all scientists involved agree on is that the Earth is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heating up</a> rapidly, and it will take many years to cool it down, even if emissions are drastically reduced. </p>



<p>“The climate is rapidly racing toward a state we've never seen before with all sorts of unknown consequences and known consequences that are going to be bad,” Irvine warned.</p>



<p>While some believe the only solution is to eliminate fossil fuel use as quickly as possible, others like Keith worry about a future where geoengineering is the last option, untested and misunderstood.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Keith sees UChicago’s initiative as a way to ensure future generations are prepared. “In the end, this needs to be global, we need to build a field.”</p>

<p>On Monday at 10:57 PM ET, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), part of the National Weather Service, issued a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic solar storm alert. </p>



<p>This follows two Coronal Mass Ejections (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-solar-outburst-detected-simultaneously-at-earth-the-moon-and-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMEs</a>) that occurred last Friday and Saturday. </p>



<p>Forecasters anticipate that the storm's intensity will fluctuate between G2 and G3 levels through Tuesday night, with the potential for another period of G4 conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-this-mean">What does this mean?</h2>



<p>According to the <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPC</a>, a G4 storm can cause various issues. You might notice voltage irregularities, which power companies may need to adjust. </p>



<p>Satellites in low Earth orbit could experience increased drag, and there might be intermittent disruptions to satellite navigation systems and high-frequency radio communications.</p>



<p>To keep power grid operators informed, SWPC has activated the North American Reliability Corporation Hotline. </p>



<p>Key partners, including the <a href="https://www.faa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAA</a>, NASA's Space Radiation Analysis Group (<a href="https://srag.jsc.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SRAG</a>), and <a href="https://www.fema.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FEMA</a>, are receiving regular updates.</p>



<p>If you live in areas as far south as Alabama or northern California, you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the auroras, though they may appear faint.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-geomagnetic-solar-storms">Understanding geomagnetic solar storms</h2>



<p>A geomagnetic storm occurs when solar activity, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CMEs), disturbs the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/earths-magnetic-field-origin-structure-and-impact-on-humanity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s magnetic field</a>.</p>



<p>These storms are driven by solar wind, a stream of charged particles released from the upper atmosphere of the Sun.</p>



<p>When these particles interact with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-is-shifting-and-putting-navigation-at-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s magnetic field</a>, they can cause various effects, from beautiful auroras to disruptions in power and communication systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-areas-and-impacts-expected">Areas and impacts expected</h2>



<p>Here’s what could happen during this event:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Power Systems</strong>: Voltage irregularities may occur, leading to potential disruptions or false alarms in power grids. Operators should be on high alert for unusual activity.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Satellites and Spacecraft</strong>: Satellites in low Earth orbit might experience increased drag and charging on their surfaces, potentially causing orientation problems or reduced lifespan.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>GPS and Navigation Systems</strong>: Satellite navigation (GPS) could face intermittent issues, such as loss of signal or increased error in positioning. This could affect not only personal GPS devices but also aviation and maritime operations.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Radio Communications</strong>: High-frequency (HF) radio communications might be unreliable, especially in polar regions, which could disrupt aviation, maritime, and emergency services relying on these frequencies.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Auroras</strong>: On a brighter note, the geomagnetic storm might produce spectacular auroras, probably visible in the Southern United States.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-storm-activity-overview">Solar storm activity overview</h2>



<p>As of September 17, 2024, solar activity remains at low levels. The most significant flare recorded was a 9.6 from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-warning-strong-solar-storm-headed-to-earth-auroras-expected-sept-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Region 3825 on September 16</a>. </p>



<p>Regions 3824 and 3825 are showing slight changes, while new Region 3828 has appeared. However, no Earth-directed CMEs have been detected.</p>



<p>Solar activity is expected to rise to moderate levels (R1-R2) today, with a slight chance of X-class flares (R3). </p>



<p>As we move into September 18 and 19, the likelihood of M-class flares will decrease as Regions 3814 and 3822 rotate around the Northwest limb.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-particle-activity-and-solar-storm-wind">Particle activity and solar storm wind</h2>



<p>In the past 24 hours, the flux of electrons greater than 2 MeV was moderate to high, peaking at 2,240 pfu. The proton flux reached minor levels this morning.</p>



<p>Expect a decrease in the electron flux due to CME influences over the next few days. There is a slight chance that proton levels could reach minor thresholds again.</p>



<p>The solar wind is currently affected by the recent CMEs, with increases in the total magnetic field and solar wind speeds. This surge indicates that the effects of the CMEs from September 13-14 are still impacting us.</p>



<p>Forecasts suggest that solar wind conditions will remain influenced by these CMEs today but should settle down by tomorrow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stay-alert-and-stay-tuned">Stay alert and stay tuned</h2>



<p>The current geomagnetic storm presents some exciting possibilities, particularly for aurora watchers. </p>

<p>Dr. Helen Keyes, a cognitive psychologist and the head of the School of Psychology and Sport Science at Anglia Ruskin University (<a href="https://www.aru.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ARU</a>) embarked on a study that explored the profound impact of creativity on well-being.</p>



<p>The research suggests that arts and crafts could significantly enhance well-being by offering meaningful spaces for expression and accomplishment.</p>



<p>Earlier research pinpointed the therapeutic effect of arts and crafts for people with mental health issues. However, Dr. Keyes and her team felt that the impact on the general population was understudied. </p>



<p>The researchers investigated how arts and crafts could reduce loneliness and contribute to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-intelligence-boosts-creativity-but-reduces-variety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">overall happiness</a> in everyday life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-creativity-and-overall-well-being">Creativity and overall well-being</h2>



<p>The team relied on extensive data from a large-scale national survey held in the UK between 2019-2020. </p>



<p>The researchers analyzed how creative activities influenced life satisfaction while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-creativity-start-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">controlling for factors</a> known to affect well-being. These were namely gender, age group, health, employment status, and deprivation.</p>



<p>The study sample consisted of 7,182 participants from England, aged 16 and over. The individuals were part of the annual "Taking Part" survey conducted by the UK’s Department for Culture, Media, and Sport. This survey delves into the public's engagement with arts and crafts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-creativity">Impact of creativity</h2>



<p>The analysis by Dr. Keyes' team discovered an interesting fact. Over 37% of the survey respondents had participated in at least one craft activity over the previous year. </p>



<p>When asked about their happiness levels, life satisfaction, and sense of fulfillment, the respondents' answers correlated positively with their participation in arts and crafts. Higher levels of participation coincided with greater overall happiness and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/boredom-can-make-children-more-creative-and-teach-new-skills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fulfillment</a>.</p>



<p>However, the study also highlighted that while there were positive impacts, arts and crafts did not reduce anxiety or loneliness, calling for further investigation in this area.</p>

<p>Dr. Clark and Dr. Keyes both agreed that creativity doesn't have a singular definition - it could take the form of knitting, coloring, photography, podcasting, and more. It provides an outlet for expression, a platform for achievement, and promotes a sense of mastery crucial for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mind-wandering-in-the-shower-sparks-creativity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">well-being</a>.</p>



<p>“All forms of art can be beneficial in boosting mental health. Benefits include: increase in self-esteem, reduction in anxiety/stress, improving communication, and fostering creativity,” said Dr Clark.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-integrating-creativity-into-daily-routines">Integrating creativity into daily routines</h2>



<p>Incorporating creativity into everyday life does not require grand gestures or significant time commitments. It can be as simple as dedicating a few minutes each day to immerse oneself in a creative activity.</p>



<p>Dr. Keyes emphasizes the importance of aligning creative endeavors with personal interests to ensure sustainability and enjoyment. </p>



<p>For example, an individual who enjoys nature might take up nature photography or sketch landscapes, thus integrating creativity seamlessly into their daily activities. </p>



<p>Making time for creativity can serve as a mental retreat from the routine hustle, offering rejuvenation and a sense of accomplishment. The essence lies in recognizing and cherishing smaller creative moments, which cumulatively enhance overall well-being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-encouraging-a-culture-of-creativity">Encouraging a culture of creativity</h2>



<p>The findings from Dr. Keyes’ research hold significant implications for policymakers and educational frameworks. </p>

<p>"Coloring is an example of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/creative-people-make-the-most-of-their-idle-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mindfulness activity</a> that has a multitude of health benefits. It can help foster social connection, improve concentration, and spur creativity," said Dr. Clark.</p>



<p>And that's the extraordinary power of creativity. It instills resilience, restoration, and reconciliation. It provides a sense of meaning and purpose. And most importantly, it makes our lives just a tad bit more colorful.</p>

<p>Sometimes, the stars (or rather, the Harvest Moon) align to give us a night sky spectacle that's truly out of this world. This year, on September 17, we're in for a celestial treat that's sure to have everyone looking skyward in awe.</p>



<p>Not only will we witness a radiant full Harvest Moon illuminating the night, but we’ll also experience a partial lunar eclipse, which occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that partially obscures the Moon.</p>



<p>To top it all off, we’ll have a rare supermoon, a phenomenon that happens when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and brighter than usual.</p>



<p>This extraordinary lunar event is celebrated globally with festivals, captivating stories shared around campfires, and, of course, a little bit of science to help us understand the wonder of these natural occurrences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harvest-moon-and-a-partial-lunar-eclipse">Harvest moon and a partial lunar Eclipse</h2>



<p><a href="https://science.nasa.gov/moon/eclipses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">An eclipse occurs</a> when the Moon moves through the Earth's shadow, effectively blocking the Sun’s light from reaching our planet.</p>



<p>The upcoming partial lunar eclipse is set to kick off at 8:41 PM EDT, providing an excellent opportunity for skywatchers to witness this natural phenomenon.</p>



<p>However, the real spectacle begins when the Moon dips into the Earth’s full shadow at 10:13 PM, transforming its appearance. </p>



<p>During this phase, just 8% of the Moon will be obscured, resulting in a visually stunning event as the Moon takes on a deep orangish hue.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/longest-partial-lunar-eclipse-of-the-century/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The beautiful display</a> will continue until 12:47 AM on Wednesday, September 18, making it a perfect occasion for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts to gather and marvel at the beauty of our universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-this-harvest-moon-is-a-supermoon">This Harvest Moon is a supermoon</h2>



<p>In addition to the exciting partial lunar eclipse, this full moon is also a supermoon. <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/solar-system/moon/what-is-a-supermoon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The term "supermoon"</a> was first introduced in 1979 and specifically refers to a new or full Moon that occurs within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. </p>



<p>While we can't observe a new Moon with the naked eye, it's the full supermoons that truly capture our attention and awe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-supermoon-blue-moon-will-outshine-and-outsize-all-other-moons-this-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">with their impressive display</a>.</p>



<p>The September supermoon is particularly special as it marks the year's second supermoon, following the one in August. This supermoon ties with the upcoming October Moon for being the closest, largest, and brightest of the year. </p>



<p>As the Moon rises in the sky, its larger-than-life presence will be impossible to miss, glowing with an intensity that will surely mesmerize stargazers and moon enthusiasts around the world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harvest-is-one-of-many-names">"Harvest" is one of many names</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/super-harvest-moon-will-rise-this-week-along-with-three-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">This full Moon</a> carries several names, each reflecting different cultural traditions and seasonal markers.</p>



<p>Traditionally known as the Harvest Moon, this Moon is the closest full one to the autumnal equinox. For centuries, it was a farmer's friend, lighting up the night so they could gather crops late into the evening. </p>



<p>It rises just 10-20 minutes later each night, which means many nights of extended twilight -- perfect for farming.</p>



<p>The northeastern U.S.'s Algonquin people named this the Corn Moon, a sign it was time to harvest key crops. Europe also knew it as the Fruit or Barley Moon, marking the ripening of fruits or the barley harvest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-traditional-harvest-moon-festivities">Traditional Harvest Moon festivities</h2>



<p>This full Moon is much more than an astronomical event -- it’s a global cultural affair.</p>



<p>In Hindu culture, Ganesh Chaturthi, a festival honoring the god Ganesha, ends, and Pitru Paksha begins -- a period devoted to paying respect to ancestors. </p>



<p>Buddhists in Bangladesh and Thailand celebrate it as Madhu Purnima, or the Honey Full Moon Festival.</p>



<p>In East Asia, it's the time for the Mid-Autumn Festival, with family reunions and mooncakes. Meanwhile, in Korea, it aligns with Chuseok, a significant harvest festival. Japan celebrates the Moon with the Moon-Viewing Festival.</p>

<p>Early life adversity can have lasting health impacts on individuals, even when circumstances improve later in life. To measure this, scientists use a cumulative adversity index (CAI), which quantifies factors like poverty and stress to assess long-term health and longevity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This tool has been invaluable in identifying ways governments, healthcare providers, and families can help improve people’s lives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-life-adversity-among-mammals">Early life adversity among mammals</h2>



<p>Wild animals also face early life adversity, but how these experiences affect their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-early-life-adversity-in-gorillas-lead-to-hardship-as-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survival</a> and lifespan is less understood.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Developing a CAI for wildlife could help scientists identify key stressors that impact animal populations and guide conservation efforts. However, the challenge lies in obtaining long-term data needed to create such an index for animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cumulative-adversity-index-for-marmots-nbsp">Cumulative adversity index for marmots&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A team of biologists from the <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Los Angeles</a> (UCLA) is currently addressing this challenge by developing the first cumulative adversity index for yellow-bellied <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marmots-may-hold-the-key-to-longevity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marmots</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings are based on 62 years of continuous data collected at the <a href="https://www.rmbl.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory</a> in Colorado, making it the second-longest study of individually marked mammals in the world.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research provides a framework for creating a cumulative adversity index for other species using large datasets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stressors-affecting-the-lifespan-of-mammals">Stressors affecting the lifespan of mammals</h2>



<p>The index revealed both expected and surprising stressors that influence marmot survival and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-explain-longevity-in-mammals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lifespan</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, it was no surprise that a late start to the growing season negatively affected survival, as marmots need to gain weight during the summer to prepare for their long hibernation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the team was surprised to find that summer drought had no significant impact on survival. Predation, another expected factor, played a smaller-than-anticipated role, while a mother’s death - especially if it occurred after the pup was weaned - had a substantial effect.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Pups live with their mother for a full year after weaning, so maternal loss appears to be a significant adversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-on-female-marmots-nbsp">Focus on female marmots&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Doctoral student Xochitl Ortiz-Ross led the development of the index, focusing on data from female marmots born after 2001.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The data included quantifiable physiological stress measures collected until 2019, allowing researchers to track individual marmots throughout their lifespans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Female marmots typically remain in the colony where they are born, making it easier for biologists to gather complete lifetime data.</p>



<p>The study population spans a 984-foot elevation change, dividing it into up-valley and down-valley groups with varying environmental conditions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Throughout spring and summer, scientists trap and collect behavioral, morphological, and physiological data on these marmots.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecological-demographic-and-maternal-factors">Ecological, demographic, and maternal factors</h2>



<p>Ortiz-Ross identified several key ecological, demographic, and maternal factors that affect a pup’s chances of surviving its first year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These stressors included a late start to the season, summer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/droughts-and-extreme-weather-events-are-escalating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drought</a>, predation pressure, large or male-biased litters, late weaning, poor maternal health, high maternal stress, and maternal loss.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Ortiz-Ross wanted to understand how these factors impacted the marmots' lifespan beyond the first year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-computer-models-to-measure-adversity-nbsp">Using computer models to measure adversity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The data were fed into computer models that categorized adversity as standard, mild, moderate, or acute.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The models produced consistent results, showing that moderate and acute adversity decreased the odds of pup survival by 30% and 40%, respectively.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Marmots living up-valley had better survival odds in all models, while maternal loss reduced survival chances by up to 64% in the moderate adversity model.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Poor maternal health lowered survival odds by 77% in the moderate adversity model, while late weaning decreased survival by 33% in standardized models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Surprisingly, drought increased survival odds in all models except for the acute adversity model, with the most significant effect in the moderate adversity model.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acute-adversity-and-lifespan-nbsp">Acute adversity and lifespan&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The average adult lifespan for yellow-bellied marmots was found to be 3.8 years, but acute adversity significantly increased the risk of shorter life expectancy.</p>



<p>“We found that a CAI effectively captures short-term survival risk in yellow-bellied marmots, and even in the long term, increased adversity early in life lowered the adult lifespan,” said Ortiz-Ross.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Positive effects didn’t cancel out earlier adverse ones, suggesting that adversity does accumulate in marmots and can’t be fully recovered by positive experiences.”</p>



<p>The study supports the hypothesis that a cumulative adversity index is a valuable tool for assessing the long-term impact of multiple early life stressors on marmot survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-conservation-efforts-nbsp">Improving conservation efforts&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“What we’re facing in terms of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a> management is death by a thousand cuts. We typically study one factor at a time: humans, predators, climate, and so forth,” said co-author and UCLA professor Daniel Blumstein.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“But these impacts occur together and have a cumulative effect. We need a way to figure out which of these stressors - or which combination - has the biggest cumulative effect, and our research shows the CAI can do that for marmots.”</p>



<p>For instance, conservation efforts targeting this marmot population could focus on the down-valley group, which fared worse than expected, and on reducing maternal mortality and improving the health of mothers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Surprisingly, reducing predation or addressing summer drought may not be as critical, as these factors did not have as much influence as initially anticipated.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
