<p>Life needs proteins for almost everything, from cell repair to immune defense. Scientists have long asked how the first proteins were formed before cells had complex machinery.</p>



<p>A new study reports a simple, water-friendly reaction that links early ingredients into the first steps toward protein-making. </p>



<p>The project was led by Professor Matthew Powner at University College London (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>), a chemist whose lab explores prebiotic chemistry.</p>



<p>"At life’s functional core, there is a complex and inseparable interplay between nucleic acids and proteins, but the origin of this relationship remains a mystery," wrote the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecules-that-build-proteins">Molecules that build proteins</h2>



<p>The team showed that RNA - a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-discovery-water-molecules-will-force-chemistry-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/">molecule</a> that stores and transfers genetic information and can catalyze reactions - can become chemically linked to amino acids. </p>



<p>These small molecules build proteins, and the linkage occurs under mild conditions in water.</p>



<p>The researchers changed amino acids into a more reactive form that holds extra energy, then linked those energized amino acids to RNA at a specific spot in the molecule, all without needing enzymes.</p>



<p>The reaction preferred the end of a double stranded RNA over interior positions, which avoids random chemistry that would scramble sequences. </p>



<p>The experts also reported strong yields for several amino acids, including arginine linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forgotten-chemical-reactions-offer-clues-to-lifes-origins/">adenosine</a> at up to 76 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sulfur-chemistry-drives-origins">Sulfur chemistry drives origins</h2>



<p>A thiol is a sulfur-containing compound common in metabolism, and thioesters made from thiols power many reactions in modern cells. </p>



<p>Using thioesters makes chemical sense for early Earth because they react in water without falling apart quickly, helping drive protein-related chemistry.</p>



<p>Earlier work from the same community showed that pantetheine, the active fragment of Coenzyme A that forms many biological thioesters today, can form under prebiotic conditions in water. </p>



<p>That work supports the idea that the same types of sulfur chemistry existed before life began.</p>



<p>This new result connects that energy-rich chemistry to RNA handling of amino acids. It links metabolism- like reactions to information carriers, which is exactly the bridge origin of life research has needed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecules-found-in-all-living-cells">Molecules found in all living cells</h2>



<p>The team uncovered a switch that controls two different steps. In step one, thioesters favor attaching the amino acid to RNA, creating aminoacyl RNA in water at neutral pH. </p>



<p>In step two, converting to thioacids and adding a mild oxidant pushed peptide bond formation, which produced peptidyl RNA in very high yields.</p>



<p>Peptides are short chains of amino acids, usually two to 50 units long, while larger folded chains are proteins. </p>



<p>Making peptidyl RNA shows that RNA-bound amino acids can be extended into short chains, a necessary move toward protein-like function.</p>



<p>“What is groundbreaking is that the activated amino acid used in this study is a thioester, a type of molecule made from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-compound-suggests-that-life-beyond-earth-could-be-common/">Coenzyme A</a>, a chemical found in all living cells," said Dr. Jyoti Singh of UCL Chemistry. "This discovery could potentially link metabolism, the genetic code, and protein building,”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neutral-waters-spark-proteins">Neutral waters spark proteins</h2>



<p>The chemistry works in water at near neutral pH, which points to pools, lakes, or wet shorelines rather than the open ocean. </p>



<p>Concentrations would have been higher in small bodies of water, and minerals could have helped organize the molecules.</p>



<p>Freeze concentrate cycles also help. The researchers observed effective aminoacylation under eutectic ice conditions near 19°F. </p>



<p>In this environment, ice excludes salt and concentrates solutes into brines, which speed reactions without harsh reagents.</p>



<p>“It seems pretty probable that this reaction would have been occurring on early Earth,” said Professor Powner. That assessment reflects the mild requirements and the water compatibility of the chemistry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridging-chemistry-and-biology">Bridging chemistry and biology</h2>



<p>Modern cells make proteins with the ribosome, a ribonucleoprotein machine that reads messenger RNA and couples amino acids with the help of transfer RNAs. </p>



<p>The new chemistry provides a path for RNA to handle amino acids without proteins, easing the chicken or egg problem.</p>



<p>An earlier study proposed an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-breakthrough-sheds-light-on-the-beginning-of-life/">RNA</a> peptide world in which RNA and short peptides co-evolved, forming chimeric molecules that could grow and select function. </p>



<p>The present result shows a plausible way for RNA to acquire and extend amino acids in water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-modern-genetic-code">The modern genetic code</h2>



<p>The genetic code is the set of rules that maps RNA triplets to amino acids. </p>



<p>By preferring attachment at RNA termini and operating under duplex control, this chemistry hints at how sequence specific pairing could later become coded instruction.</p>



<p>The researchers point to the need for sequence preferences that pair specific RNA sequences with specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-building-blocks-may-have-formed-near-newborn-stars-and-planets/">amino acids</a>. That would move from chemistry that charges RNA to chemistry that begins to encode.</p>



<p>Success there would show how early RNA could use simple rules to shape peptide sequences, with later evolution building the fully fledged ribosome and the modern code.</p>

<p>These shrimp illuminate the ocean depths in various ways - some by ejecting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-plankton-glow-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glowing</a> secretions, others through sophisticated organs in their bodies designed specifically for light production, and a few employing both methods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-roles-of-bioluminescence-in-shrimp">The roles of bioluminescence in shrimp</h2>



<p>The purpose behind these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bioluminescent-gene-identified-that-makes-sea-pickles-glow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">luminous displays</a> is as varied as the methods themselves. Bioluminescence serves multiple functions, according to Stormie Collins, a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://www.fiu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FIU</a>, and her mentor, Professor Heather Bracken-Grissom.</p>



<p>For some shrimp, it's a form of camouflage; for others, a means of defense; and for many, it's a way to communicate in the pitch-black environment of the deep sea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Adapting to the darkness of the deep sea</h2>



<p>“The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth, comprising over 99% of all habitable space on the planet, of which most is dark, expansive, and structured only by chemical and physical properties of the water column,” wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>“The deep sea begins in waters 200–1000 m in depth, known as the mesopelagic or twilight zone. The twilight zone is an extremely light-limited environment, as downwelling sunlight attenuates rapidly with depth.”</p>



<p>“Waters below 1000 m are referred to as the bathypelagic or midnight zone due to the complete absence of downwelling sunlight. Survival in the deep sea has resulted in the evolution of a suite of morphological features, for example, the ability to produce light through a process called bioluminescence.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-the-known-range-of-bioluminescence">Expanding the known range of bioluminescence</h2>



<p>The researchers utilized a combination of direct observation during deep-sea expeditions, literature review, and accounts from other studies. </p>



<p>“We report bioluminescence in 157 species of decapod shrimps spanning 12 families - an increase in bioluminescent decapod species of 65% from a previous review which reported 55 species spanning five families,” noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-source-of-bioluminescence-in-shrimp">Source of bioluminescence in shrimp</h2>



<p>Previously, it was thought that shrimp primarily used luminous secretions for bioluminescence. The new data, however, show a shift towards more species utilizing light organs embedded within their tissue, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/scary-sea-monsters-that-are-actually-real/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photophores</a>.</p>



<p>“We report photophores in the family Pasiphaeidae based on personal observations of light organs in live specimens, making this the first record of dermal light organs in this family, and increasing the number of representative caridean families with dermal photophores,” wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Previously, luminous secretions were thought to be the most common form of bioluminescence in decapod shrimps. By contrast, we find dermal photophores to be the most common light organ type across decapod species.”</p>

<p>"Bioluminescence is the universal language of light in the deep sea," explained Bracken-Grissom. She emphasized the importance of continued research to unravel how these creatures use light to survive in such an extreme environment. </p>



<p>Each sea expedition brings to light new and exciting discoveries, enriching our understanding of one of nature's most mysterious phenomena.</p>

<p>"We are learning that bioluminescence is much more common than previously thought, not only within shrimps but across all deep-sea animals," said Collins.</p>



<p>“Future research directions include experimental studies investigating the visual capacity of deep-sea shrimps, phylogenetic studies investigating the evolution of bioluminescence across decapod taxa, and molecular studies investigating extraocular photosensitivity,” concluded the study authors.</p>

Gardening significantly improves sleep quality in adults

<p>The Sonoran Desert <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brazilian-flea-toad-worlds-smallest-vertebrate-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">toad</a>, also known as the Colorado River toad, is infamous for its psychedelic venom. While the venom's hallucinogenic properties are well-documented, scientists have recently uncovered a potential new application: a treatment for depression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-toad-venom-for-depression">Toad venom for depression</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psychedelic-drugs-secreted-from-toad-skin-greatly-improve-cognitive-functioning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Psychedelics</a>, known for their mind-altering properties, have a complex interaction with the brain, particularly with serotonin receptors. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter crucial in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite.</p>



<p>Researchers have traditionally focused on the 5-HT2A receptor, which is primarily responsible for the hallucinogenic effects of psychedelics. However, a team led by Dr. Daniel Wacker from the Icahn School of Medicine shifted their attention to the 5-HT1A receptor, a subtype of serotonin receptor also known to play a significant role in mood regulation and anxiety.</p>



<p>To investigate the potential of the 5-HT1A receptor in mood disorders, the team modified a compound found in the venom of the Sonoran Desert toad. This modification allowed the compound to specifically target the 5-HT1A receptor without activating the 5-HT2A receptor responsible for hallucinations.</p>



<p>The modified compound was then administered to mice exhibiting signs of stress and depression. The results were promising, as the mice showed a significant reduction in anxiety and depression-like behaviors. </p>



<p>Notably, the mice did not experience any hallucinogenic effects, indicating that targeting the 5-HT1A receptor could be a viable strategy for developing new antidepressants without the unwanted side effects associated with psychedelics. </p>



<p>The treated mice showed more social interaction and favored sweet treats. These behaviors support the idea that the compound improved their mood and well-being.</p>

<p>The intense geomagnetic activity will cause&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aurora-borealis-seen-as-far-south-as-the-equator-after-largest-known-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auroras to be visible</a>&nbsp;at much lower latitudes than usual, potentially as far south as Florida, southern Texas, and southern California.</p>

<p>A series of powerful solar flares and eruptions from the sun are set to trigger a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-issues-severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-first-time-since-2005/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">severe geomagnetic storm</a>, potentially bringing breathtaking displays of auroras, the northern lights, to skies across the United States. </p>



<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (<a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPC</a>) issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm watch on Thursday, the first since 2005.</p>



<p>Today, as the storms began striking Earth, the forecast predicts that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-southern-united-states-this-week-huge-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auroras could be visible</a> as far south as Florida and Texas in the southeast and as low as southern California on the west coast.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-flares-and-auroras">Solar flares and auroras</h2>



<p>Observers have witnessed severe (G4) geomagnetic storm conditions today. Several additional Earth-directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are in transit to Earth's outer atmosphere, making it highly likely that geomagnetic storming will persist for several days.</p>



<p>The CMEs are associated with a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster, known as NOAA <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-prepares-impact-three-cme-events-solar-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">region 3664</a>, which continues to grow and now spans an impressive 17 times the diameter of Earth. Several strong flares have been detected in this region, contributing to the heightened alert level.</p>



<p>Shawn Dahl, a service coordinator at the SWPC in Boulder, Colorado, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, "We have a rare event on our hands."</p>

<p>On May 11, 2024, at 07:28 AM EDT (1128 UTC), extreme (G5) solar conditions were observed once again by the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (<a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SWPC</a>). The geomagnetic storming, which <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-issues-severe-geomagnetic-storm-watch-first-time-since-2005/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">varies in intensity</a>, is expected to persist through at least Sunday. </p>



<p>This latest event follows a series of strong solar flares and coronal mass ejections (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dr2BIlDGDk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMEs</a>) that have been occurring since Wednesday.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Another strong solar flare detected</h2>



<p>A powerful X5.4 magnitude solar flare was detected from sunspot cluster <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-prepares-impact-three-cme-events-solar-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA region 3664</a>. </p>



<p>Solar flares of this magnitude are relatively rare and are characterized by intense eruptions of energy from the Sun that typically last anywhere from minutes to hours. </p>



<p>The flare reached its peak at 01:23 AM EDT on May 11, 2024.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Potential impact on high-frequency radio signals</h2>



<p>Users of high-frequency (HF) radio signals may experience temporary degradation or complete loss of signal on much of the sunlit side of Earth due to the solar flare. </p>



<p>The threat of additional strong flares and CMEs is expected to remain until the large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664) rotates out of view over the next several days.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Power grid irregularities and communication disruptions</h2>



<p>There have been reports of power grid irregularities and degradation to high-frequency communications and GPS. </p>



<p>In response, NOAA has alerted operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit, as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to take necessary precautions.</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a> scientist Rob Steenburgh, this storm poses a risk for high-voltage transmission lines for power grids, but not the electrical lines typically found in residential homes. </p>



<p>Satellites could also be affected, potentially disrupting navigation and communication services on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Auroras visible across most of the United States</h2>



<p>Weather permitting, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-southern-united-states-this-week-huge-solar-storm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auroras should be visible again</a> tonight for most of the continental United States. </p>



<p>Steenburgh and his colleagues suggest that phone cameras may provide the best aurora views, as they are better at capturing light than the naked eye. </p>



<p>"That's really the gift from space weather: the aurora," Steenburgh noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">No serious threat to ISS astronauts</h2>



<p>NASA has stated that the storm poses no serious threat to the seven astronauts aboard the International Space Station. </p>



<p>The primary concern is the increased radiation levels, and if necessary, the crew could move to a better shielded part of the station, according to Steenburgh.</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence (AI) systems, developed with intentions of assistance and honesty, have paradoxically mastered the art of deception. A recent scholarly review highlights the growing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lawless-superintelligence-zero-evidence-ai-control-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concern</a> surrounding AI systems that manipulate and deceive. </p>



<p>The research delves into numerous instances where AI has been trained to perform tasks in ways that prioritize deceptive strategies over transparent operations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-learned-deception">Focus of the research: Learned deception </h2>



<p>"The false information generated by AI systems presents a growing societal challenge. One part of the problem is inaccurate AI systems, such as chatbots whose confabulations are often assumed to be truthful by unsuspecting users," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"Malicious actors pose another threat by generating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepfake-detection-inauthentic-content-lacks-telltale-signs-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deepfake</a> images and videos to represent fictional occurrences as fact. However, neither confabulations nor deepfakes involve an AI systematically learning to manipulate other agents."</p>



<p>"In this paper, we focus on <em>learned deception</em>, a distinct source of false information from AI systems, which is much closer to explicit manipulation. We define deception as the systematic inducement of false beliefs in others, as a means to accomplish some outcome other than saying what is true." </p>



<p>"For example, we will document cases where, instead of strictly pursuing the accuracy of outputs, AI systems try to win games, please users, or achieve other strategic goals."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-genesis-of-ai-deception">The genesis of AI deception </h2>



<p>The study reveals that AI often resorts to deception as an effective strategy to excel in its assigned tasks. </p>



<p>"AI developers do not have a confident understanding of what causes undesirable AI behaviors like deception," explained Peter S. Park, an AI existential safety postdoctoral fellow at <a href="https://web.mit.edu/">MIT</a>. “But generally speaking, we think AI deception arises because a deception-based strategy turned out to be the best way to perform well at the given AI’s training task. Deception helps them achieve their goals.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-spectrum-of-deception">A spectrum of deception</h2>



<p>In exploring the literature, Park and his team have identified various ways through which AI systems disseminate misinformation. One striking example involves Meta's CICERO, an AI designed for the strategy game Diplomacy. </p>



<p>Despite Meta's intentions for CICERO to remain honest, the study revealed that it often manipulated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/does-the-human-brain-outperform-artificial-intelligence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human players</a> to gain advantages, contradicting its training directives.</p>



<p>Moreover, AI systems have displayed cunning behaviors in other arenas. From bluffing in Texas hold ‘em poker against seasoned players to simulating fake attacks in Starcraft II and skewing economic negotiations, these systems show a broad capacity for deceit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ripple-effects-of-ai-misdirection">The ripple effects of AI misdirection</h2>



<p>Though these manipulations may initially appear trivial within game contexts, they possess the potential to foster significant advancements in AI deception techniques. Such progress could ultimately pose severe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robosapiens-ai-project-making-industrial-robots-more-free-thinking-adaptable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">risks</a> to societal safety and governance.</p>



<p>"Breakthroughs in deceptive AI capabilities can lead us humans into a false sense of security," said Park, emphasizing the hidden dangers these technologies might harbor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-implications-of-advanced-ai-deception">The implications of advanced AI deception</h2>



<p>The ramifications of these deceptions are far-reaching, with potential impacts including fraud facilitation and election tampering. <p>"Eventually, if these systems can refine this unsettling skill set, humans could lose control of them," said Parks. </p>

<p>As AI deception advances, the urgency for effective regulation becomes more pronounced. While recent initiatives like the EU AI Act and President Biden's AI Executive Order signify steps toward addressing these issues, the effectiveness of such measures remains uncertain. </p>



<p>"We as a society need as much time as we can get to prepare for the more advanced deception of future AI products and open-source models," said Park.</p>



<p>"If banning AI deception is politically infeasible at the current moment, we recommend that deceptive AI systems be classified as high risk."</p>

<p>The world is abuzz with talk of carbon capture and climate change, but did you know that nature has its own tiny superheroes doing just that? Scientists have recently unlocked a secret hidden in the blueprint of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cyanobacteria-may-shed-new-light-on-the-history-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blue-green algae</a>, also known as cyanobacteria, that could revolutionize agriculture and our fight against climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cyanobacteria-s-carbon-concentrating-mechanism">Cyanobacteria's carbon concentrating mechanism</h2>



<p>Cyanobacteria, notorious for their sometimes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-cyanobacteria-uk-ponds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">toxic blooms</a> in lakes and rivers, are actually powerhouses when it comes to capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. </p>



<p>Their secret weapon? A carbon dioxide concentrating mechanism (CCM) that enables them to fix carbon at an astonishing rate, far surpassing ordinary plants and crops.</p>



<p>At the heart of this CCM lies a large protein compartment called a carboxysome, where two key enzymes, CsoSCA and Rubisco, work in perfect harmony. </p>



<p>CsoSCA creates a high concentration of carbon dioxide within the carboxysome, while Rubisco eagerly gobbles it up, transforming it into sugars that the cell uses for energy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-role-of-csosca-and-rubp">Unexpected role of CsoSCA and RuBP</h2>



<p>While scientists have long understood the role of Rubisco in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>, the regulation of CsoSCA remained a mystery. </p>



<p>However, recent research has revealed an unexpected connection between CsoSCA and a molecule called RuBP, which acts as a switch, activating CsoSCA only when enough RuBP is available.</p>



<p>"Think of photosynthesis like making a sandwich. Carbon dioxide from the air is the filling, but a photosynthetic cell needs to provide the bread. That's RuBP," Dr. Ben Long, lead author of the study, explains.</p>



<p>"Just like you need bread to make a sandwich, the rate of turning <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-oxygen-boring-billion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a> dioxide into sugar depends on how fast RuBP is supplied," he concluded.</p>

<p>Observations from the Solar Orbiter spacecraft have provided unprecedented insights into the dynamic behavior the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/the-suns-role/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a>.&nbsp;The mission,&nbsp;launched in 2020,&nbsp;aims to unravel the mysteries of our star's atmosphere and its influence on the solar system.</p>

<p>The Solar Orbiter is a collaborative mission between the European Space Agency (<a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>) and <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>. It features a variety of scientific instruments that were built to study the sun's atmosphere and heating processes. </p>



<p>The instruments include telescopes, spectrometers, and particle detectors. Together, they offer detailed observations of the solar corona and solar wind interactions.</p>

<p>The footage released this week was captured in September 2023. At that time, the spacecraft was two-thirds of the distance between Earth and the sun. </p>



<p>Contrary to the static image we often see, the footage reveals a dynamic environment in which charged gas, or plasma, flows along magnetic field lines. This flow creates intricate patterns on the sun's surface.</p>



<p>The video reveals hair-like structures made of charged gas, known as plasma. These structures follow magnetic field lines that originate from deep within the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-sunspot-archipelago-15-times-wider-than-earth-spotted-by-nasa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a>. Also visible are bright, hot regions where temperatures reach 1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit. Alongside these are darker, cooler areas where material absorbs radiation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-features-of-the-sun">Hidden features of the sun</h2>



<p>The video captured by the Solar Orbiter and meticulously annotated by scientists provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into the sun's intricate features, which are typically hidden from view at greater distances. </p>

<p>In addition to the moss, the video also shows towering spires of gas, known as "spicules." These spicules stretch high above the sun's surface and play a crucial role in revealing the dynamic processes governing the sun's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Moreover, the footage documents a significant event on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-sun-may-be-the-original-source-of-earths-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a> — an eruption so large it's comparable in size to Earth itself. The dramatic phenomenon is followed by what is known as "coronal rain." This process involves the cooling of plasma after the eruption, which then falls back towards the sun's surface. </p>



<p>This cycle of heating and cooling is not only mesmerizing to observe but also provides critical insights into the mechanisms of solar activity, illustrating the sun's ability to influence its surroundings through such powerful events.</p>

<p>The Solar Orbiter boasts a cutting-edge instrument called the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager, which was designed and built by Airbus Defence &amp; Space in the UK. <p>Black holes are some of the most mysterious and powerful objects in the universe. They grow larger as they devour basically everything they encounter, including dust, stars, planets, and even other black holes. However, a new study reveals that black holes have different diets and eating habits. </p>



<p>Some black holes are messy eaters, gobbling up huge chunks of matter at once, causing bright outbursts of light. Others are much more refined diners, consuming their diet in a slow and steady stream, barely causing a ripple in the cosmic pond.</p>



<p>Scientists have been trying to understand these differences for years.&nbsp;Now,&nbsp;thanks to data from NASA's retired <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/spitzer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spitzer Space Telescope</a>,&nbsp;they may have uncovered the secret to how some black holes,&nbsp;like the one at the center of our neighboring galaxy Andromeda,&nbsp;maintain their picky eating habits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-s-diet-via-dust-streams">Black hole's diet via dust streams</h2>



<p>Researchers employed the infrared imaging technology of the Spitzer Space Telescope to examine the core of the Andromeda galaxy. This investigation revealed extensive dust streams that extend for thousands of light-years, directing towards the supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/colossal-black-hole-found-in-our-galaxy-is-33-times-the-suns-mass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> at the galaxy's center. </p>



<p>These observations of dust movements are crucial as they help explain the processes by which the black hole continuously feeds on incoming material in a steady, subdued manner.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-buffet">Black hole buffet</h2>



<p>When a black hole consumes a substantial amount of matter, such as a star or a gas cloud, the interaction is visually dramatic. The immense gravitational pull of the black hole rapidly heats this material to extremely high temperatures as it approaches the event horizon - the boundary beyond which nothing can escape. </p>



<p>As the material accelerates and heats up, it emits a vast amount of radiation across various wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. This emission can be so intense that it sometimes outshines the collective light of an entire galaxy, creating what is known as a quasar or an active galactic nucleus.</p>



<p>However, the supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/powerful-magnetic-fields-may-be-key-features-of-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a> located at the centers of the Milky Way and Andromeda exhibit much quieter behavior. Unlike more active black holes, these do not display the same dramatic flares of brightness. </p>



<p>The light emitted from these black holes is notably faint and remains consistent over time. This suggests that they are not engaging in the sporadic consumption of large masses. Instead, they appear to be steadily accreting smaller quantities of material. </p>



<p>This method of consumption is less disruptive and does not lead to the same level of radiant outburst, hence their categorization as some of the quietest eaters in the universe. Their feeding process, characterized by the ingestion of smaller, more consistent streams of matter, contrasts sharply with the more violent and episodic feeding habits seen in other galactic centers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secret-ingredient-in-black-hole-s-diet">Secret ingredient in black hole's diet</h2>



<p>A <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/ace2c3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> published earlier this year proposed a theory to explain this. The researchers suggested that these quiet black holes have a  diet that consists of a continuous stream of gas and dust. </p>



<p>They used computer simulations to model how gas and dust would behave near a supermassive black hole.&nbsp;The simulations showed that a steady flow of material could form a swirling disk around the black hole,&nbsp;providing a constant source of nourishment.</p>



<p>This theory,&nbsp;however,&nbsp;comes with a twist.&nbsp;The streams feeding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-black-holes-and-quasars-grew-faster-than-their-galaxies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> can't be too big or too small.&nbsp;If they're too large,&nbsp;they could break apart and fall into the black hole in unpredictable clumps,&nbsp;causing those messy outbursts of light. But if they're too small,&nbsp;the black hole wouldn't get enough to eat and would start to shrink.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spitzer-to-the-rescue">Spitzer to the rescue</h2>



<p>The researchers compared their simulations to actual observations from Spitzer and its cousin,&nbsp;the Hubble Space Telescope.&nbsp;They found dusty spirals in Andromeda that matched the predicted size and flow rate needed to feed a quiet black hole.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These dusty tendrils could be the black hole's personal buffet line,&nbsp;constantly replenished to satisfy its insatiable appetite. "This is a great example of scientists reexamining old data to reveal new insights," said Almudena Prieto,&nbsp;an astrophysicist involved in the study.&nbsp;"We have 20-year-old data telling us things we didn't recognize when we first collected it."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deeper-look-into-andromeda">Deeper look into Andromeda</h2>



<p>Launched in 2003,&nbsp;Spitzer was a marvel of engineering.&nbsp;It was specifically designed to see the universe in infrared light, which is invisible to our eyes.&nbsp;Different infrared wavelengths reveal different features of celestial objects.&nbsp;Hot,&nbsp;glowing objects like stars show up brightly in certain wavelengths,&nbsp;while cooler objects like dust clouds appear in others.</p>



<p>By separating these wavelengths, astronomers can essentially peel back the layers of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ceers-2112-ancient-galaxy-looks-strikingly-similar-to-ours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxy</a>, revealing its hidden structure. In the case of Andromeda, this revealed a surprising view of the black hole's vital diet. </p>



<p>Unlike our Milky Way,&nbsp;which has distinct spiral arms,&nbsp;Andromeda is dominated by a large ring of dust.&nbsp;This ring also has a curious gap,&nbsp;likely caused by a smaller galaxy that wandered a little too close.</p>



<p>Andromeda's proximity to Earth makes it a prime target for astronomical study. It's the closest large galaxy to our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-amount-of-dark-matter-may-be-missing-from-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Milky Way</a>, and with the naked eye, it would appear six times wider than the Moon. Even with a powerful telescope like Spitzer, capturing a detailed image of Andromeda required a whopping 11,000 separate snapshots.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. <p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."</p>



<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>

<p>Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.</p>



<p>The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."</p>



<p>"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."</p>



<p>"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."</p>



<p>The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes the first comprehensive estimate of carbon density in the Saharan, Sahel, and Sudanian zones of Africa. In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. </p>



<p>"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."</p>



<p>"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.</p>



<p>"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”</p>
