<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>In the vast expanse of the universe, countless exoplanets orbit distant stars, each with its unique characteristics and mysteries. Recent data from various space missions suggest that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/glory-effect_exoplanet_WASP-76b_ESA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exoplanet WASP-76b</a> may hold the first extrasolar "glory lights" effect ever observed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peculiar-conditions-of-wasp-76b">Peculiar conditions of WASP-76b</h2>



<p>Olivier Demangeon, an astronomer at the <a href="https://www.iastro.pt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço</a> in Portugal and the lead author of the study, explains the rarity of this phenomenon. </p>



<p>"There's a reason no glory has been seen before outside our Solar System -- it requires very peculiar conditions," Demangeon explained. </p>



<p>"First, you need atmospheric particles that are close-to-perfectly spherical, completely uniform and stable enough to be observed over a long time. The planet's nearby star needs to shine directly at it, with the observer – here Cheops – at just the right orientation," he noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-glory-lights-effect-on-an-exoplanet">Significance of glory lights effect on an exoplanet</h2>



<p>The first glory lights effect on a planet other than Earth was seen on Venus in 2011 by the Venus Express Orbiter. The glory in the images here was <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/glory-effect_venus_ESA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seen at the Venus cloud tops</a>, 70 km above the planet’s surface. It is 1200 km wide as seen from the spacecraft, 6000 km away.</p>



<p>If confirmed, the first exoplanetary glory lights would provide valuable insights into the planet and its host star. <a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a> Research Fellow Matthew Standing emphasizes the incredible scale of the observation, saying, "What's important to keep in mind is the incredible scale of what we're witnessing."</p>



<p>He continued, "WASP-76b is several hundred light-years away – an intensely hot gas giant planet where it likely rains molten iron. Despite the chaos, it looks like we've detected the potential signs of a glory. It's an incredibly faint signal."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hellish-landscape-of-wasp-76b">Hellish landscape of WASP-76b</h2>



<p>WASP-76b, an ultra-hot <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-find-a-planet-named-halla-that-shouldnt-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter-like planet</a>, has been the subject of intense scrutiny since its discovery in 2013. </p>



<p>The exoplanet is locked in a tight orbit around its host star, with one side permanently facing the scorching heat. </p>



<p>Temperatures on this side reach a staggering 2400 degrees Celsius, causing elements that would form rocks on Earth to melt and evaporate. </p>



<p>These elements then condense on the slightly cooler night side, creating iron clouds that <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/exoplanet_WASP-76_b_atmosphere_water_ESA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rain molten iron</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-effect-of-glory-lights-glow">Unexpected effect of glory lights glow</h2>



<p>Scientists have been intrigued by an apparent asymmetry in WASP-76b's outermost regions, or 'limbs,' as it passes in front of its host star. </p>



<p>Data from various ESA and <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a> missions, including TESS, Hubble, and Spitzer, were analyzed in this revealing study. </p>



<p>However, it was the collaboration between ESA's Cheops and NASA's TESS that provided the first hints of the glory phenomenon.</p>



<p>Olivier Demangeon explains the significance of the discovery. "This is the first time that such a sharp change has been detected in the brightness of an exoplanet, its 'phase curve.' This discovery leads us to hypothesize that this unexpected glow could be caused by a strong, localized and anisotropic (directionally dependent) reflection – the glory effect."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-glory-lights-effect">Understanding the glory lights effect</h2>



<p>While the glory effect creates rainbow-like patterns, it differs from rainbows in its formation. Rainbows form when sunlight passes through media with different densities, causing the light to bend and split into various colors. </p>



<p>In contrast, glory occurs when light passes between narrow openings, such as water droplets in clouds or fog, resulting in concentric rings of color due to the diffraction and interference of light waves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>Confirmation of the glory effect on WASP-76b would indicate the presence of clouds composed of perfectly spherical droplets that have persisted for at least three years or are being continuously replenished. The atmosphere's temperature would also need to be stable over time for such clouds to exist. </p>



<p>Theresa Lüftinger, Project Scientist for ESA's upcoming Ariel mission, emphasizes the importance of detecting such minute wonders. </p>



<p>"Being able to detect such minute wonders so far away will teach scientists and engineers how to detect other hard-to-see but critical phenomena. For example, sunlight reflecting off liquid lakes and oceans – a requirement for habitability," she explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-further-observations">Need for further observations</h2>



<p>While the evidence for the glory effect on WASP-76b is compelling, further observations are needed to confirm its presence conclusively. </p>



<p>Follow-up observations from the NIRSPEC instrument onboard the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope or ESA's upcoming Ariel mission could provide the necessary proof. </p>



<p>The possibility of discovering more gloriously revealing colors shining from other exoplanets is an exciting prospect for astronomers.</p>

<p>Researchers at the University of Massachusetts (<a href="https://www.umass.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UMass</a>) Amherst have been hard at work figuring out just how well artificial intelligence (AI) can identify insects based on their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-device-identifies-mosquitoes-using-only-sound/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sounds</a>. It turns out, our buzzing little neighbors can tell us a lot about how the environment is doing.</p>



<p>Insects may be small, but these tiny creatures play a gigantic role in our ecosystems. But with climate change, pesticides, and other environmental pressures, insect populations are constantly changing. Tracking these changes is a huge challenge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-do-insect-sounds-matter">Why do insect sounds matter?</h2>



<p>"Insects have an enormous impact on global ecosystems," said Laura Figueroa, assistant professor of environmental conservation at UMass Amherst. "They provide a vital food source for countless other animals, including species as diverse as birds, fish, bears, and even humans."</p>



<p>In addition, insects play critical roles in pollination, nutrient cycling, and other essential ecological processes. Despite their significance, tracking insect populations across large areas and understanding how they are being impacted by environmental changes is a significant challenge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-ai-in-identifying-insect-sounds">Role of AI in identifying insect sounds</h2>



<p>Traditional approaches to insect monitoring often involve physically collecting specimens in the field. While these methods can provide accurate data, they have several drawbacks. Field collection can be labor-intensive, requiring significant time and resources. </p>



<p>Additionally, the process of collecting insects often results in harm or death to the organisms, which can be a concern for species that are threatened or declining.</p>



<p>The development of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/darpa-ai-robot-insect-brains/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI technology</a> offers a potential solution to these challenges. By analyzing the sounds insects produce, AI models can identify and differentiate species without the need for physical collection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aidan-insect-identification-expert">Aidan insect identification expert</h2>



<p>Can a computer tell the difference between a honeybee and a mosquito? Figueroa believes so. "Since many, but not all, insects emit sound, we should be able to train AI models to identify them by the unique sounds they make."</p>



<p>To explore this concept, the researchers analyzed numerous studies that used AI systems to identify insect species by sound. The models they examined spanned a range of complexity:</p>



<ul>
<li>Non-machine learning: These systems search for specific sound characteristics that have been predetermined by researchers. For example, they might be programmed to look for a particular frequency range that's common in a mosquito's whine.</li>



<li>Machine learning: Machine learning models exhibit greater adaptability. These systems analyze sound data to discover patterns on their own, matching them against a database of known insect sounds for identification.</li>



<li>Deep learning: Deep learning represents an advanced subset of machine learning. These models leverage sophisticated neural networks that mimic the way a brain learns. This allows for even more accurate and nuanced identification of insect sounds. Some deep learning models have achieved over 90% accuracy in identifying hundreds of different insect species.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-the-future-of-insect-monitoring">AI and the future of insect monitoring</h2>



<p>"This doesn't mean that AI can or should replace all traditional monitoring approaches," noted Anna Kohlberg, who led the research on AI-insect identification. "Automated bioacoustics is a key tool in a multifaceted toolkit that we can use to effectively monitor these important organisms all over the world."</p>



<p>AI-based insect monitoring, while promising, does have certain constraints. Many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-detection-system-quickly-identifies-invasive-asian-hornets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI models</a> require extensive amounts of sound data to be trained effectively. This can be a challenge when working with rarer or less vocal insect species. </p>



<p>Environmental factors such as background noise from wind, traffic, or other animals can impact the accuracy of AI analysis by masking or distorting the insect sounds of interest. Finally, not all insects produce identifiable sounds, meaning AI-based monitoring is unsuitable for certain species.pen_spark</p>

<p>Understanding our insect populations isn't just about knowing how many there are. It's about seeing the bigger picture of environmental health. </p>



<p>A place without the buzzing of pollinators or the clicking of crickets might tell us that the ecosystem is struggling. With AI, we suddenly have a new way to listen to what nature is trying to tell us.</p>

<p>Remember those fuzzy, black and orange bumblebees buzzing around your garden? The ones with the rusty-colored patch on their backs? They're called rusty-patched bumblebees. Sadly, the bees are now endangered and nearing extinction. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.colostate.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a> researchers have led a landmark genetic study, casting light on the bee's drastic decline. The findings mark a critical step towards reviving this endangered pollinator.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endangered-rusty-patched-bumblebees">Endangered rusty-patched bumblebees</h2>



<p>The rusty-patched bumblebee has a sad claim to fame. It was the first bee species to land on the<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rusty-patched-bumble-bee-endangered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> U.S. Endangered Species list</a> way back in 2017. The situation's gotten worse since then. Scientists estimate a staggering 90% decline in their population compared to just a few decades ago.</p>



<p>"If that trajectory continues, this species could blink out in the next couple of decades," warns John Mola, an ecologist at Colorado State University who led a major genetic study on these bees.</p>

<p>Widespread use of neonicotinoid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/concerning-levels-of-bee-harming-pesticides-discovered-in-english-rivers/">pesticides</a> causes the decline of bumblebee populations. These chemicals can harm bumblebees directly or indirectly by affecting their food sources (plants) or disrupting their navigation abilities.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pathogen-pressure">Pathogen pressure</h3>



<p>Bumblebees, like many other animals, can be susceptible to various diseases and parasites. The introduction of new pathogens or the spread of existing ones due to factors like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-communication-is-hindered-by-human-activity/">habitat loss</a> can put additional stress on already struggling populations.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-habitat-degradation">Habitat degradation</h3>



<p>Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to bumblebees. Converting natural landscapes to agriculture or development deprives bumblebees of critical resources like nesting sites and food-providing flowering plants.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change">Climate change</h3>



<p>A changing climate disrupts weather patterns and flowering times of plants. This can make it difficult for bumblebees to find food and complete their lifecycles successfully. The combined effects of these factors are likely synergistic, meaning each threat worsens the impact of the others.</p>



<p>However, to develop the most effective conservation strategies, scientists need a deeper understanding of the situation beyond just the environmental threats. This is where genetics comes in.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endangered-rusty-patched-bumblebees-genetic-history">Endangered rusty-patched bumblebees genetic history</h2>



<p>A team of researchers collected tiny samples of bee DNA from across their entire range. What they found wasn't pretty. Not only are there fewer bee colonies overall, but some of the remaining ones are showing signs of worryingly high inbreeding. About 15% of the bees studied had genetic glitches that suggest their parents were closely related.</p>



<p>"When that happens, those populations essentially face a death sentence," explains Mola. Inbreeding makes bees less resilient to threats in the long term.</p>



<p>Adding another layer of complexity to the rusty-patched bumblebee's decline is a surprising discovery about their genetic makeup. Scientists initially assumed these bees formed a single large population across the United States. However, their research revealed a different story: the rusty-patched bumblebee is actually divided into three distinct genetic groups.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geographic-separation">Geographic separation</h3>



<p>These groups are geographically isolated, with one population concentrated in the upper Midwest, another in the central Midwest, and a third tucked away in the Appalachian Mountains. This separation likely occurred due to historical habitat fragmentation and changes in climate patterns.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limited-gene-pool">Limited gene pool</h3>



<p>Each of these isolated groups has a smaller gene pool compared to a single, larger population. This limited genetic diversity can make them more vulnerable to threats like disease or environmental changes.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-challenges">Conservation challenges</h3>



<p>From a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-conservation-relies-on-plant-diversity/">conservation</a> standpoint, this discovery presents a significant challenge. Strategies that might be effective for one bee group may not be suitable for another due to their unique genetic makeup. Additionally, the smaller population size of each group makes them more susceptible to extinction if threats aren't addressed effectively.</p>



<p>Scientists now face the complex task of tailoring conservation efforts to address the specific needs of each genetically distinct group. This highlights the importance of considering both environmental and genetic factors when developing strategies to save endangered species like the rusty-patched bumblebee.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-the-bumblebees">Importance of the bumblebees</h2>



<p>Bumblebees play a vital role as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-rusty-patched-bumblebee-a-very-important-pollinator-is-on-the-edge-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a>, responsible for fertilizing both wildflowers and a wide range of crops. Their unique ability to carry large pollen loads and work in various conditions makes them especially valuable. </p>



<p>Without bumblebees, food production would become more difficult and expensive, posing an economic risk in addition to the ecological one.</p>



<p>Sadly, the rusty-patched bumblebee isn't the only one buzzing into trouble. "Unfortunately, we're looking at a future scenario where about one in five bumblebee species in the United States could be endangered," says Mola.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-will-the-endangered-bumblebees-go-extinct">Will the endangered bumblebees go extinct?</h2>



<p>So, are we doomed to say goodbye to the rusty-patched bumblebee? Not necessarily. Its endangered status has triggered projects aimed at restoring their favorite habitats and helping them find food. </p>



<p>Here's what we can do, too:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-planting-native-plants">Planting native plants</h3>



<p>Planting a variety of native wildflowers in your yard or garden provides a reliable food source for bumblebees and other pollinators throughout the growing season. Native plants have co-evolved with local pollinators, offering them the specific types of nectar and pollen they need to thrive.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ditch-the-pesticides">Ditch the pesticides</h3>



<p>Avoiding the use of pesticides, particularly harmful insecticides, is crucial. These chemicals can directly harm bumblebees, disrupt their behavior, or damage the very food sources they depend on. If you must treat pests, opt for natural or less harmful alternatives whenever possible.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spread-the-word">Spread the word</h3>



<p>Encourage your neighbors, friends, and community members to do the same. By creating safe and pollinator-friendly spaces, we can collectively contribute to much-needed habitat restoration, giving bumblebees and other pollinators a fighting chance.</p>



<p>Mola reminds us, "At times, there can be doom and gloom in conservation, but there are good examples of butterfly species that have been recovered through careful conservation planning. The same thing applies with bumblebees."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-endangered-rusty-patched-bumblebees">Saving endangered rusty-patched bumblebees</h2>



<p>The recent genetic study is a huge deal. Understanding the rusty-patched bumblebee's distinct populations means scientists can tailor recovery plans for each region. They now know they can't simply scoop up bees from one area and move them to another.</p>



<p>"This research is invaluable—it helps us refine healthy colony targets and shows us the importance of optimizing conservation efforts in genetically distinct areas, like the Appalachians," says Tamara Smith, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.</p>



<p>The future of the rusty-patched bumblebee is still uncertain, but scientists haven't given up on them. So, next time you spot one of these little buzzers, take a moment, appreciate their fuzzy cuteness, and wish them luck.</p>

Rusty-patched bumblebees could vanish in the next couple decades

<p>A team of scientists has identified the first documented case of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/over-40-of-amphibians-face-extinction-due-to-escalating-climate-threats/">amphibians</a> using ultrasound for defense against predators. This distress call is of ear-piercing intensity for various animals, but inaudible to humans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study was led by researchers at <a href="https://www.ib.unicamp.br/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">State University of Campinas’s Institute of Biology</a> (IB-UNICAMP) in São Paulo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scaring-as-many-predators-as-possible-nbsp">Scaring as many predators as possible&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Some potential predators of amphibians, such as bats, rodents and small primates, are able to emit and hear sounds at this frequency, which humans can’t," said study lead author Ubiratã Ferreira Souza, a master student at IB-UNICAMP.</p>



<p>"One of our hypotheses is that the distress call is addressed to some of these, but it could also be the case that the broad frequency band is generalist in the sense that it’s supposed to scare as many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/conspicuous-frogs-have-big-brains-to-evade-predators/">predators</a> as possible.”</p>



<p>The research also entertains the possibility that the frog's alarm call might draw another predator to the scene to target the initial threat. This defensive behavior was observed in the leaf litter frog (<em>Haddadus binotatus</em>), endemic to Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ultrasound-beyond-human-hearing-nbsp">Ultrasound beyond human hearing&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Upon recording the frog's distress call during two separate instances and analyzing the sound, researchers discovered it spanned from 7 kilohertz (kHz) to 44 kHz, entering the range of ultrasound at frequencies beyond human hearing, which caps at 20 kHz.</p>



<p>While issuing this call, the frog adopts a defensive posture, indicative of its strategy to ward off predators. This includes lifting its body front, opening its mouth wide, and retreating its head, followed by a vocalization that starts within human hearing range and escalates into ultrasonic territory.</p>



<p>“In light of the fact that amphibian diversity in Brazil is the highest in the world, with more than 2,000 species described, it wouldn’t be surprising to find that other frogs also emit sounds at these frequencies,” said co-author Mariana Retuci Pontes, a PhD student at IB-UNICAMP.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-amphibians-may-use-ultrasound-calls-nbsp">Additional amphibians may use ultrasound calls&nbsp;</h2>



<p>An accidental discovery by Pontes might indicate another species employing this ultrasonic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/defense-mechanisms-corn-enemy/">defense mechanism</a>. During a visit to São Paulo's Upper Ribeira State Tourism Park, she encountered a frog, likely a Hensel’s big-headed frog (<em>Ischnocnema henselii</em>), exhibiting similar defensive behavior and calls as the <em>H. binotatus</em>, with a lancehead pit viper (<em>Bothrops jararaca</em>) nearby, hinting at a predator-prey interaction.</p>



<p>According to senior author Luís Felipe Toledo, a professor at IB-UNICAMP,&nbsp; due to the habit, size, and similar predators threatening both species, it is possible for <em>Ischnocnema henselii</em> to also use ultrasonic distress calls. Toledo's initial suspicion of <em>H. binotatus</em>'s ultrasonic capabilities dates back to 2005, though equipment limitations at the time precluded confirmation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ultrasound-as-a-defense-mechanism-nbsp">Ultrasound as a defense mechanism&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Although recordings exist of three Asian amphibian species emitting ultrasound calls, these sounds are seemingly serving the purpose of intra-species communication.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Among mammals, the use of ultrasound is prevalent in species such as whales, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-echolocation-hunt-prey/">bats</a>, rodents, and certain small primates. However, the use of ultrasound by amphibians as a defense mechanism to deter predators was not documented before this study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intriguing-questions-remain">Intriguing questions remain</h2>



<p>Following this groundbreaking discovery, the research team is set to explore several intriguing questions that have emerged.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They aim to identify the predators that can detect the distress call, understand their response to it, and determine whether the purpose of the call is to frighten potential threats or to summon the predators of those threats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Could it be the case that the call is meant to attract an owl that will attack a snake that’s about to eat the frog?” said Souza.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-leaf-litter-frogs">More about leaf litter frogs</h2>



<p>Leaf litter frogs are a fascinating group of amphibians that inhabit forest floors around the world, thriving in the dense, damp layers of fallen leaves.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These small, often camouflaged <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/conspicuous-frogs-have-big-brains-to-evade-predators/">frogs</a> have adapted to blend into their environment, making them elusive and sometimes difficult to spot. Their coloration mimics the hues of the decomposing leaves, twigs, and soil, providing excellent camouflage against predators.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Leaf litter frogs are crucial for the ecosystem as they help control insect populations and serve as prey for larger animals. They have a unique lifecycle, with many species laying their eggs in the leaf litter where the moist environment supports the development of the eggs and tadpoles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This habitat specialization makes them particularly sensitive to changes in their environment, such as deforestation, pollution, and climate change. Studying leaf litter frogs helps scientists understand the health of forest ecosystems and the impacts of environmental changes.</p>

Inaudible screams: Amphibians use ultrasound to deter predators

A team of scientists has identified the first documented case...

<p>A recent study led by <a href="https://www.macalester.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Macalester College</a> in Minnesota has found that not only did the earliest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-dinosaurs-benefited-from-changes-in-global-climate/">dinosaurs</a> exhibit rapid growth rates, but so did many animals during the Mesozoic era, spanning from 252 to 66 million years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The scientists delved into the growth strategies of some of the earliest dinosaurs and their contemporaries, shedding light on a key aspect that might have contributed to the dinosaurs' eventual dominance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-one-of-the-oldest-known-mesozoic-ecosystems">One of the oldest known Mesozoic ecosystems</h2>



<p>By analyzing fossilized leg bones from the Ischigualasto Formation in Argentina, dated between 231-229 million years old, the team was able to examine the growth patterns of various species living in one of the oldest known Mesozoic ecosystems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This selection included not only some of the earliest known dinosaurs but also several non-dinosaur <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-reptile-rhynchosaur-died-off-before-the-dinosaurs-due-to-weak-teeth/">reptiles</a> and an early mammalian relative.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-growth-rates-nbsp-among-mesozoic-animals">Rapid growth rates&nbsp;among Mesozoic animals </h2>



<p>The histological analysis revealed that elevated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-dinosaurs-did-not-necessarily-grow-faster/">growth rates</a> were common among ancient animals of the Mesozoic era, aligning more closely with the growth rates of modern mammals and birds than those of present-day reptiles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Interestingly, while early dinosaurs demonstrated particularly rapid growth, they were not alone; several non-dinosaur reptiles exhibited similar growth rates.</p>



<p>“Our results indicate that the Ischigualasto vertebrate fauna collectively exhibits relatively high growth rates. Dinosaurs are among the fastest growing taxa in the sample, but they occupied this niche alongside crocodylomorphs, archosauriformes, and large-bodied pseudosuchians,” noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dinosaur-success-was-not-solely-tied-to-rapid-growth">Dinosaur success was not solely tied to rapid growth</h2>



<p>This discovery suggests that rapid growth was a widespread trait among different lineages during the Triassic period (252-201 million years ago), indicating that while this characteristic may have been advantageous for dinosaurs, it was not unique to them.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This challenges the notion that elevated growth rates were solely responsible for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/feathers-were-the-secret-of-dinosaur-success/">dinosaurs' success</a> and suggests that other factors also played a role in their rise to prominence in Mesozoic ecosystems.</p>



<p>“Our sample comes from a time in which dinosaurs were the new kids on the block, restricted to relatively small, basic body plans, and evolving within a world rich with a diverse array of more specialized, non-dinosaur reptiles,” wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>“We tackled the question of how all of these animals grew, and found that the earliest dinosaurs grew quickly, and that these rapid growth rates probably played a significant role in dinosaurs’ subsequent ascent within Mesozoic ecosystems; but dinosaurs weren’t unique – many of their non-dino sidekicks shared rapid growth 230 million years ago.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-the-mesozoic-era-nbsp">More about the Mesozoic era&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Mesozoic Era, known as the "Age of Reptiles," is divided into three periods: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. </p>



<p>This era witnessed the dominance and diversity of reptilian life forms, especially dinosaurs, but it also included a variety of other animals that shared the planet with these iconic creatures.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-triassic-period-nbsp">Triassic period&nbsp;</h3>



<p>During the Triassic period, the early Mesozoic era, the world saw the emergence of the first dinosaurs alongside a group of reptiles known as archosaurs, which also included the ancestors of crocodiles and birds. </p>



<p>The seas were home to the first marine reptiles like ichthyosaurs and nothosaurs, while the skies began to be patrolled by the first pterosaurs near its end.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-jurassic-period-nbsp">Jurassic period&nbsp;</h3>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plesiosaur-fossils-are-the-first-evidence-of-jurassic-vertebrates-in-texas/">Jurassic</a> period marked an increase in the diversity and complexity of dinosaur life. Giant sauropods like Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus roamed the land, feeding on the abundant vegetation. </p>



<p>This period also saw the rise of more sophisticated predators, including the well-known Allosaurus. The oceans teemed with marine reptiles such as plesiosaurs and the larger ichthyosaurs, while the air saw greater diversity in pterosaurs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cretaceous-period-nbsp">Cretaceous period&nbsp;</h3>



<p>The Cretaceous period brought even greater diversity and the dominance of dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Velociraptor are iconic representatives of this period. Flowering plants appeared, changing landscapes and providing new food sources. </p>



<p>The seas were dominated by large marine reptiles like mosasaurs and the enormous pliosaurs, and the skies witnessed the evolution of birds from certain groups of small theropod dinosaurs.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dramatic-ending">Dramatic ending</h3>



<p>However, the Mesozoic era came to a dramatic end approximately 66 million years ago with a mass extinction event, likely caused by a combination of volcanic activity, climate change, and the impact of a massive comet or asteroid. </p>



<p>This event led to the demise of the majority of dinosaur species, along with many other forms of life, paving the way for mammals to become the dominant terrestrial animals in the subsequent Cenozoic era.</p>

For over a century and a half, scientists have been intrigued by a peculiar feature shared across the skulls of terrestrial vertebrates. From the majestic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jaws-of-predatory-dinosaurs-grew-stronger-as-they-evolved/">dinosaurs</a> of the past to humans today, there is a notable gap in the temple region.</p>



<p>A collaborative effort between researchers from the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> and <a href="https://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ruhr University Bochum</a> has shed light on this mystery. The research illuminates how dietary behaviors have influenced our anatomical structure.</p>

<p>The study, led by a dedicated team from Tübingen and Bochum, offers a compelling explanation. The researchers have linked the forces exerted during feeding to the evolution of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/facial-features-influenced-by-mothers-diet-during-pregnancy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">skeletal structures</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-the-origins-of-skull-shape">Unveiling the origins of skull shape</h2>



<p>Dr. Ingmar Werneburg from the University of Tübingen, a key figure in the study, emphasized the diverse skull and bone shapes noted by scientists. Yet, the origin of temple bars and openings and their impact on understanding vertebrates' biology and relationships was unclear until now.</p>



<p>Professor Holger Preuschoft from Ruhr University Bochum, renowned for his contributions to functional morphology, introduced a fundamental principle underpinning the study's hypothesis. </p>



<p>Professor Preuschoft explained that bone mass forms in areas subjected to compressive stresses. Additionally, he emphasized the need for mechanical rest to prevent the formation of pseudarthrosis, or false joints.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-evolutionary-impact-of-diet">The evolutionary impact of diet</h2>



<p>The experts analyzed various fossilized reptiles, including dinosaurs, ultimately comparing the skulls of land vertebrates across millions of years of evolution.</p>



<p>The analysis unveiled a fascinating aspect of human anatomy: a substantial temporal opening above the cheekbone. This feature allows the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-animal-jaws-optimized-bite-strength-and-speed/">jaw</a> muscle to connect to the lower jaw, creating a passage that is palpable when chewing. </p>



<p>Following this discovery, the team observed that intense biting at the jaw's front, possibly aided by fangs, generates significant tension spreading from above the eyes towards the neck. This tension prompts the formation of bone braces in the temple region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skull-features-and-feeding-habits">Skull features and feeding habits</h2>



<p>Additionally, reptiles exhibit an extra skull feature related to their feeding habits. Due to their propensity to bite at the back of the jaw, they leverage greater biting force. This increased force is made possible by the shorter leverage distance from the jaw joint.</p>



<p>According to Werneburg, such action induces a compressive stress that necessitates a bone bridge behind the eye. When this intersects with the upper compressive stress from a frontal bite, the forces partially merge. This interaction can potentially lead to the formation of a second zygomatic arch.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-structural-symphony">A structural symphony</h2>



<p>Preuschoft's earlier research on the impact of these forces on modern animal skulls, along with tests on bone breakage thresholds, laid the groundwork. This foundational work allowed for the application of these insights to vertebrate evolutionary history.</p>



<p>Consequently, the study reveals that shaking prey or tearing leaves introduces additional lateral shearing forces, causing further temple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dipsadine-snakes-have-skulls-that-evolve-to-fit-their-needs/">modifications</a>. <p>"This indicates that the increased usage of the novel food by the more social birds was not due to them being generally more exploratory or brave, but rather that more social birds are more likely to use novel food as a way of expanding their diets to offset the costs of having more foraging associates," said Dr. Keith McMahon, the lead researcher from the Department of Biology at Oxford.</p>

<p>By studying these fossils closely, they realized that the teeth were actually more similar to those of another extinct mammal group called the docodontans. </p>

<p>“When you look at the fossil record, both for mammals and many other sorts of animals, teeth are the part of the body that you are most likely to recover,” said Jin Meng, curator in the American Museum of Natural History’s <a href="https://www.amnh.org/research/paleontology" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Division of Paleontology</a> and a corresponding author. </p>



<p>“Yet since the 1980s, the perplexing tooth shape seen in shuotheriids has been a barrier to our efforts to understand early mammal evolution. These new specimens have allowed us to solve this longstanding problem.”</p>

<p>The research team utilized data on operational and prospective mining sites across 17 African countries, incorporating buffer zones around these sites to measure both direct impacts, like habitat destruction and pollution, and indirect ones, such as increased human activity leading to habitat loss and elevated disease transmission risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overlaps-in-mining-and-high-ape-density-zones-nbsp">Overlaps in mining and high ape density zones&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Great apes in West Africa, particularly in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, and Guinea, face the severest threats due to substantial overlaps between mining areas and high ape density zones.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Notably, in Guinea, mining activities could impact over 23,000 chimpanzees, up to 83% of the country's ape population. The areas most at risk - where high ape and mining densities coincide - are largely unprotected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mining-s-true-impact-on-great-apes">Mining's true impact on great apes</h2>



<p>"Currently, studies on other species suggest that mining harms apes through pollution, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/">habitat loss</a>, increased hunting pressure, and disease, but this is an incomplete picture," said study lead author Jessica Junker, a researcher at Re:wild and former postdoctoral fellow at iDiv and MLU.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The lack of data sharing by mining projects hampers our scientific understanding of its true impact on great apes and their habitat.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regions-designated-as-critical-habitats-nbsp">Regions designated as critical habitats&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The intersection of mining areas with regions designated as "critical habitats," essential for their unique biodiversity, was found to be alarmingly high, about 20 percent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Critical habitats are subject to stringent environmental regulations, especially for mining projects seeking financial backing from entities like the <a href="https://www.ifc.org/en/home">International Finance Corporation</a> or similar lenders. However, many ape habitats have been overlooked in previous mappings of critical habitat in Africa.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-transparency-is-urgently-needed">More transparency is urgently needed</h2>



<p>“Companies operating in these areas should have adequate mitigation and compensation schemes in place to minimize their impact, which seems unlikely, given that most companies lack robust species baseline data that are required to inform these actions,” explained senior author Tenekwetche Sop, the&nbsp; manager of the IUCN SSC A.P.E.S. Database at the <a href="https://museumfrankfurt.senckenberg.de/en/">Senckenberg Museum of Natural History</a>, a repository of all great ape population data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Encouraging these companies to share their invaluable ape survey data with our database serves as a pivotal step towards transparency in their operations. Only through such collaborative efforts can we comprehensively gauge the true extent of mining activities' effects on great apes and their habitats.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-permanent-damage-inflicted-on-great-ape-populations">Permanent damage inflicted on great ape populations</h2>



<p>The study also critiques the current practices of compensation or offsetting by mining companies, pointing out that these measures are often based on underestimated approximations of mining's impacts and fail to account for the permanent damage inflicted on great ape <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/african-great-apes-will-lose-most-of-their-range-in-the-next-30-years/">populations</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>”Mining companies need to focus on avoiding their impacts on great apes as much as possible and use offsetting as a last resort as there is currently no example of a great ape offset that has been successful,” said co-author Genevieve Campbell, the leader of the <a href="https://www.arrctaskforce.org/about">IUCN SSC PSG SGA/SSA ARRC Task Force</a> and a senior researcher at Re:wild.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploration-and-habitat-destruction-nbsp">Exploration and habitat destruction&nbsp;</h2>



<p>"Avoidance needs to take place already during the exploration phase, but unfortunately, this phase is poorly regulated and ‘baseline data’ are collected by companies after many years of exploration and habitat destruction have taken place. These data then do not accurately reflect the original state of the great ape populations in the area before mining impacts.’’</p>



<p>“A shift away from fossil fuels is good for the climate but must be done in a way that does not jeopardize <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-biodiversity-crisis-is-actually-worse-than-we-thought/">biodiversity</a>. In its current iteration it may even be going against the very environmental goals we’re aiming for. Companies, lenders and nations need to recognize that it may sometimes be of greater value to leave some regions untouched to mitigate climate change and help prevent future epidemics,” Junker concluded.</p>

<p>A recent study has revealed a disturbing link between excessive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-light-pollution-disrupts-entire-ecological-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial light</a> (aka light pollution) and an increased risk of stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases that affect the supply of blood to the brain. </p>



<p>Light pollution is the presence of excessive, poorly directed, or overly bright artificial light at night. Common sources of light pollution include streetlights, billboards, illuminated buildings, and other forms of outdoor lighting. </p>



<p>Sadly, this pollution harms human health, disrupts the delicate balance of ecosystems, and reduces our ability to enjoy the beauty of the natural night sky. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-light-pollution-on-the-body">Impact of light pollution on the body</h2>



<p>Sunlight plays a crucial role in our health, providing vitamin D and regulating our natural rhythms. However, artificial lights used for streets, homes, and workplaces affect our bodies in different ways. When you're exposed to bright lights in the evening, it interferes with the production of a hormone called melatonin.</p>



<p>Melatonin is essential for your sleep cycle. It naturally increases in your body in the evening, signaling that it's time to rest. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-pollution-has-increased-almost-everywhere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Light pollution</a> can disrupt melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. This leads to immediate problems like sleep deprivation, but could potentially have long-term health consequences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-light-and-stroke">Artificial light and stroke</h2>



<p>The Ningbo study looked at data from over 28,000 adults living in the city, tracking their health for about six years. The researchers used satellite images to measure the amount of artificial light pollution each person was exposed to at night. They also took into account factors like air pollution, which is already a known risk for cardiovascular health.</p>



<p>The findings were concerning. The study revealed that individuals exposed to higher levels of artificial light at night had a significantly increased risk (43%) of developing cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke. These diseases affect the blood vessels and blood supply to the brain and are a major cause of disability and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-and-light-pollution-increased-stroke-risk">Air and light pollution: Increased stroke risk</h2>



<p>Additionally, researchers also discovered that high exposure to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-linked-to-a-higher-risk-of-stroke/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a>, particularly particulate matter (tiny particles like dust and diesel emissions), also increased the risk of cerebrovascular diseases. This aligns with existing research showing the detrimental effects of air pollution on cardiovascular health.</p>



<p>While the link between light pollution and cerebrovascular diseases was strong, the connection between light pollution and strokes specifically appeared weaker when analyzed alongside air pollution data. This highlights the complex nature of environmental factors and their impact on our health. </p>



<p>Further research is needed to fully understand how exposure to light and air pollution, both individually and combined, may influence our risk of stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-light-as-a-stroke-risk-factor">Artificial light as a stroke risk factor</h2>



<p>“Our study suggests that higher levels of exposure to outdoor artificial light at night may be a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease,” said Dr. Jian-Bing Wang, one of the corresponding authors of the study. “Therefore, we advise people, especially those living in urban areas, to consider reducing that exposure to protect themselves from its potential harmful impact.”</p>



<p>While this study highlights a correlation (a link between two factors), it doesn't definitively prove that light pollution directly causes an increased risk. However, the connection is strong enough to warrant caution and further research.</p>

<p>These lamps emit a specific type of light that mimics natural sunlight. This exposure can help regulate your circadian rhythm (your internal sleep-wake cycle). They are particularly useful for individuals who work night shifts or irregular hours, as well as those who live in areas with limited sunlight during certain seasons.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warm-night-lights">Warm night lights</h3>



<p>If you need to have some light on at night, choose bulbs that emit warmer tones like red or amber. These wavelengths of light have a less disruptive effect on melatonin production compared to harsh white or blue lights.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
