This major analysis of viral genomes offers new insights into the dynamics of disease transmission across species.</p>



<p>Through an exhaustive examination of all publicly available viral genome sequences, the experts aimed to trace the cross-species transmission - or host jumps - of viruses.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-humans-at-the-receiving-end-of-viruses">Are humans at the receiving end of viruses?</h2>



<p>The team sought to challenge the prevailing view that humans are primarily at the receiving end of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reverse-zoonoses-humans-are-getting-their-pets-sick/">zoonotic</a> diseases, which are infections that jump from animals to humans. These diseases have been responsible for outbreaks such as Ebola, flu, and COVID-19.</p>



<p>The research team developed and applied methodological tools to analyze the nearly 12 million viral genomes that have been published on public databases to date, outlining the scale of their investigation into the evolutionary paths and mutations of viruses as they adapt to new hosts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bidirectional-exchange-of-pathogens">Bidirectional exchange of pathogens</h2>



<p>Contrary to the common perception of humans as mere recipients of animal viruses, the study's findings suggest a more bidirectional exchange of pathogens.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We should consider humans just as one node in a vast network of hosts endlessly exchanging pathogens, rather than a sink for zoonotic bugs,” said co-author Francois Balloux, a professor at the UCL Genetics Institute.</p>



<p>“By surveying and monitoring transmission of viruses between animals and humans, in either direction, we can better understand viral evolution and hopefully be more prepared for future outbreaks and epidemics of novel illnesses, while also aiding conservation efforts.”</p>

<p>“When animals catch viruses from humans, this can not only harm the animal and potentially pose a conservation threat to the species, but it may also cause new problems for humans by impacting food security if large numbers of livestock need to be culled to prevent an epidemic, as has been happening over recent years with the H5N1 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-is-killing-thousands-of-seals-and-sea-lions-globally/">bird flu</a> strain.”</p>



<p>“Additionally, if a virus carried by humans infects a new animal species, the virus might continue to thrive even if eradicated among humans, or even evolve new adaptations before it winds up infecting humans again. Understanding how and why viruses evolve to jump into different hosts across the wider tree of life may help us figure out how new viral diseases emerge in humans and animals.”</p>

<p>Interestingly, viruses with a wider range of animal hosts showed a lesser need for such adaptations, suggesting inherent capabilities in some viruses to infect diverse <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pigs-and-humans-are-sharing-antibiotic-resistance-genes/">hosts</a> without extensive genetic changes.</p>



<p>While cell entry is generally considered as the first step for a virus to infect a host, the scientists discovered that many of the adaptations associated with host jumps were not found in the viral proteins which enable them to attach to and enter host cells. This finding suggests that viral host adaptation is a complex process in need of further research to be fully understood.</p>

<p>“Our research was made possible only by the countless research teams that have openly shared their data via public databases. The key challenge, moving forward, is to integrate the knowledge and tools from diverse disciplines including genomics, epidemiology, and ecology to enhance our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-jump-related-species/">host jumps</a>,” said co-author Lucy van Dorp, a researcher in microbial and population genetics at UCL.</p>

<p>In 2020, the Midwest Derecho, a severe <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/aftermath-thunderstorm-sunset/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thunderstorm</a> event, caused widespread damage across the Midwest. Researchers at Penn State have developed a technique that merges satellite data with weather forecast models. This innovation significantly sharpens the accuracy of predictions for storm intensity and wind locations. </p>



<p>The study, published in the journal <em><a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2023GL106602" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geophysical Research Letters</a></em>, highlights how using microwave data from satellites can enhance weather forecasts. While traditional models depend on ground-based radar, the new technique utilizes satellite data to improve predictions in under-covered areas. This could revolutionize forecasting in regions with limited radar access.</p>

<p>"We know that there have been several times in the past several years in West Africa where very strong torrential rainfall events have brought on a lot of precipitation to those countries," noted Zhang. Providing improved forecasts for such regions could have a significant impact, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and climate change on vulnerable communities.</p>

<p>Kumar's recent research in mice points to a disturbing domino effect triggered by an unhealthy diet. The study suggests that a diet high in unhealthy fats wreaks havoc on your gut's lining, making it permeable – or in simpler terms, "leaky."</p>



<p>This leakiness allows harmful substances and inflammation to spread into your bloodstream like an unchecked wildfire. It's a chain reaction nobody wants.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-deprivation-linked-type-2-diabetes-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diabetes</a> fuels this fire of inflammation because the body struggles to manage blood sugar levels. <p>The team in Dr. Kumar's lab has been studying functions of Jak3 for a long time, and they now know that the impact of food on the changes in the expression of Jak3 leads to leaky gut. </p>

<p>Recent studies led by <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College London</a> have brought a surprising twist to the tale of water on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-has-a-water-reservoir-two-miles-deep-enough-to-fill-earths-red-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>' Gale Crater.</p>



<p>When you think of Mars, you probably picture a barren, dusty wasteland. Billions of years ago, rivers flowed and lakes filled its craters. But scientists believe the planet dried up eons ago. </p>



<p>This research turns that idea on its head, suggesting that Mars may have had water – and possibly habitable environments – much more recently than we believed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-and-the-gale-crater">Water and the Gale Crater</h2>



<p>Gale Crater, a vast basin near <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/the-history-of-mars-is-much-more-complex-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>' equator, is the Curiosity rover's playground. It's a fantastic place to explore the history of the red planet. The crater can be imagined as a giant lake, with sediments piling up to form the towering Mount Sharp in its center. </p>



<p>Over time, the lake dried. Rivers vanished. Winds piled sand dunes against those sediments, preserving a record of Mars' transition from wet to dry. Or so we thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gale-crater-sandstone-hints-at-water">Gale Crater sandstone hints at water</h2>



<p>The researchers studied wind-blown sandstone layers high on Mount Sharp within Gale Crater specifically within an area known as the Feòrachas structure. </p>



<p>These layers, created in a supposedly bone-dry era of Martian history, didn't look right. Instead of neatly stacked, they were warped and twisted.</p>



<p>"Usually, the wind deposits sediment in a very regular, predictable way," explained study co-author Amelie Roberts. </p>



<p>"Surprisingly, we found that these wind-deposited layers were contorted into strange shapes, which suggests the sand had been deformed shortly after being laid down. These structures point to the presence of water just below the surface."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-so-what-deformed-the-sand">So, what deformed the sand?</h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pressurized-groundwater">Pressurized groundwater</h3>



<p>"The sandstone revealed that water was probably abundant more recently and for longer than previously thought - but by which process did the water leave these clues?" asked study lead author Dr. Steven Banham. The sand could've warped as pressurized water seeped up, nudging the sand grains around.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-frozen-ground">Frozen ground</h3>



<p>Perhaps water froze and then thawed repeatedly, the ice pushing and pulling the sand into contortions. Dr. Banham noted: "This water might have been pressurized liquid, forced into and deforming the sediment; frozen, with the repeat freezing and thawing process causing the deformation; or briny, and subject to large temperature swings."</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brines">Brines</h3>



<p>It's also possible that extremely salty water (brine) flowed near the surface. Brines handle extreme cold better than pure water, and wild temperature swings in the Martian desert could've caused strange effects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extended-presence-of-water-on-mars">Extended presence of water on Mars</h2>



<p>"What's clear is that behind each of these potential ways to deform this sandstone, water is the common link," explained Dr. Banham.</p>



<p>Interestingly, scientists agree Mars lost its surface water long ago. These warped sand layers prove something different. It seems water was hanging around longer than we thought, lingering underground even as the surface turned to desert. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-water-in-the-gale-crater">Significance of water in the Gale Crater </h2>



<p>The discovery matters because of water persisting in Mars' Gale Crater means potential for life. If water lingered in Martian rocks, perhaps some kind of simple life took refuge there, eking out an existence long after lakes and rivers vanished. </p>



<p>"The layers of sediment in the crater reveal a shift from a wet environment to a drier one over time - reflecting Mars' transition from a humid and habitable environment to an inhospitable desert world," explained Roberts. </p>



<p>"But these water-formed structures in the desert sandstone show that water persisted on Mars much later than previously thought."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-rocks-not-off-the-list-for-life">Mars rocks: Not off the list for life</h2>



<p>Previously, dry Martian deserts were low on the list of places to look for traces of past life – biosignatures.</p>



<p>"Determining whether Mars and other planets were once able to support life has been a major driving force for planetary <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/the-history-of-water-on-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a>," said Dr. Banham. "Our findings reveal new avenues for exploration - shedding light on Mars' potential to support life and highlighting where we should continue hunting for new clues."</p>



<p>"The search for life, whether Mars once harbored it or if other planets could, has driven space exploration for decades. Our findings open entirely new possibilities – they point us to places with the potential to answer those big questions."</p>



<p>Don't let those dusty landscapes fool you. When it comes to water – and potential life – Mars might still have a few secrets hiding beneath its barren surface.</p>

Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href="https://www.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a>) have a compelling answer: "Outdoor Days." </p>



<p>This new way of measuring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate impact</a> focuses on something deeply personal -- the days of the year when the weather lets us work or play outside comfortably. Sadly, it paints a stark picture -- climate change has winners and losers, and geography matters significantly.</p>

<p>Exploring the icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter has long been a focal point for scientists in the quest for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-17-exoplanets-that-have-oceans-and-possibly-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extraterrestrial life</a>. According to new research, even <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/enceladus_sub-surface-ocean_illustration_ESA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microscopic amounts</a> of cellular material ejected from moons or exoplanets could reveal signs of life to the instruments on missions slated for the near future.</p>



<p>This fascinating study, conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> in Seattle and <a href="https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Freie Universität Berlin</a>, offers promising insights for these upcoming exploration missions. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microscopic-breakthrough-in-the-search-for-extraterrestrial-life">Microscopic breakthrough in the search for extraterrestrial life</h2>



<p>Lead author <a href="https://ess.uw.edu/people/fabian-klenner/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fabian Klenner</a>, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, emphasizes the significance of their work. </p>



<p>“For the first time we have shown that even a tiny fraction of <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/enceladus_ice-bubble_illustration_Postberg_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cellular material</a> could be identified by a mass spectrometer onboard a spacecraft," Klenner explained. </p>



<p>“Our results give us more confidence that using upcoming instruments, we will be able to detect lifeforms similar to those on Earth, which we increasingly believe could be present on ocean-bearing moons," he continued.</p>



<p>This breakthrough bolsters the hope of detecting life forms on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-oceans-hide-secrets-in-outer-ice-shells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean-bearing</a> moons and extrasolar planets using sophisticated instruments designed for upcoming space missions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-life-on-solar-system-moons">Searching for life on solar system moons</h2>



<p>This study is particularly relevant in light of the Cassini mission's findings, which concluded in 2017. Cassini discovered plumes emanating from <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/enceladus_sub-surface-ocean_hydrothermal-activity_NASA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn’s moon Enceladus</a>, indicating the presence of gas and ice grains. </p>



<p>The upcoming <a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/mission/about/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa Clipper</a> mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa, scheduled for October, aims to carry more advanced instruments for in-depth exploration.</p>



<p>In preparation for the Europa Clipper mission, the researchers conducted experiments to simulate what these instruments might encounter. The challenge of replicating the high-speed collision of ice grains with a spacecraft led the team to adopt a novel approach. </p>



<p>They disintegrated liquid water into droplets <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-bennu-hints-at-the-possibility-of-life-on-an-ancient-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in a vacuum</a> and used a laser to analyze the material, simulating the conditions that spacecraft instruments will face.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simulating-the-cosmos-in-alaskan-waters">Simulating the cosmos in Alaskan waters</h2>



<p>Their experiments revealed that future space missions could detect cellular material in ice grains. Specifically, the study focused on <em>Sphingopyxis alaskensis</em>, a bacterium found in Alaskan waters, known for its small size and ability to thrive in cold, nutrient-scarce environments. These characteristics make it an ideal model for potential life on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shock-discovery-saturns-moon-enceladus-has-all-of-the-ingredients-necessary-for-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">icy moons</a>.</p>



<p>Klenner highlights the importance of studying individual ice grains. “They are extremely small, so they are in theory capable of fitting into ice grains that are emitted from an ocean world like Enceladus or Europa.” </p>



<p>The study found that analyzing single grains where biomaterial may be concentrated is more effective than examining a larger, more diluted sample.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-phosphate-water-life-on-enceladus">Phosphate + water = life on Enceladus?</h2>



<p>Further bolstering the case for life on these moons, a recent study led by the same researchers found evidence of phosphate on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-sparking-energy-source-found-on-saturns-moon-enceladus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enceladus</a>. This discovery, coupled with the presence of water, other salts, and carbon-based organic materials, increases the likelihood of these celestial bodies supporting life.</p>



<p>The study also theorizes how bacterial cells might integrate into icy material. If bacterial cells are encased in a lipid membrane, they could form a "skin" on the ocean's surface, similar to sea scum on Earth. </p>



<p>When the ocean is connected to the surface, the vacuum of space could cause the subsurface ocean to boil, incorporating cellular material into ice grains.</p>



<p>Klenner explains the significance of these findings, saying, “We here describe a plausible scenario for how bacterial cells can, in theory, be incorporated into icy material that is formed from liquid water on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-alien-life-exists-on-enceladus-scientists-have-unambiguous-proof-they-will-find-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enceladus</a> or Europa and then gets emitted into space.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-for-lipids-with-the-europa-clipper-mission">Looking for lipids with the Europa Clipper mission</h2>



<p>The Europa Clipper's <a href="https://europa.nasa.gov/spacecraft/instruments/suda/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SUrface Dust Analyzer</a> represents a leap forward in space exploration instruments, capable of detecting negatively charged ions and better suited for identifying fatty acids and lipids. Klenner finds the prospect of searching for lipids more exciting than searching for DNA's building blocks due to their stability.</p>



<p>Senior author <a href="https://www.geo.fu-berlin.de/en/geol/fachrichtungen/planet/staff/professors/postberg/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frank Postberg</a> from Freie Universität Berlin concludes, “With suitable instrumentation, such as the SUrface Dust Analyzer on NASA’s Europa Clipper space probe, it might be easier than we thought to find life, or traces of it, on icy moons.”</p>



<p>This optimistic outlook hinges on the presence of life and its incorporation into ice grains from subsurface water reservoirs, paving the way for exciting discoveries in the search for extraterrestrial life.</p>

Thousands of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-killed-hundreds-of-seals-in-new-england-last-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seals</a> and sea lions have already perished in countries ranging from the United States to South America. </p>



<p>This isn't the first time animals have fallen victim to bird flu, but the sheer scale of this outbreak is unprecedented and alarming. But, how did these beloved marine mammals get infected in the first place? </p>



<p>Scientists believe the seals and sea lions likely contracted bird flu through contact with infected birds or their droppings. It is also possible that seals preyed on sick birds.</p>



<p>"Once the virus is in wildlife, it spreads like wildfire, as long as there are susceptible animals and species," said Marcela Uhart, director of the Latin America program in the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center at the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>. "Movement of animals spreads the virus to new areas."</p>

<p>Here's where things stand with the bird flu outbreaks:</p>

"Marine mammals are still pretty unique in the scale of the outbreaks that are occurring," said Wendy Puryear, an author of a <a href="https://www.tufts.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tufts University</a> study on the seal deaths.</p>

<p>The situation is especially grim, with over 20,000 sea lions succumbing in Chile and Peru, and thousands of elephant seal deaths in Argentina.</p>

<p>This raises the specter of the virus potentially jumping to other vulnerable species – or even humans in a worst-case scenario.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animals-in-aquariums-are-at-risk">Animals in aquariums are at risk</h2>



<p>It's not just wild seals and sea lions that are vulnerable to bird flu – those in the protected environments of aquariums face risk, too. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.neaq.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New England Aquarium in Boston</a>, for example, has instituted strict protocols to protect their harbor seals. "We do know that it's a risk for the animals that reside here," said Melissa Joblon, the Boston aquarium's director of animal health.</p>

<p>While there's no single solution, experts are considering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deadly-bird-flu-outbreak-requires-urgent-coordinated-response/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">several approaches</a> to try to curb this crisis:</p>

<p>"Authorities have carried out campaigns about the disease, strongly recommending to stay away from seabirds or marine mammals with symptoms or found dead in the coastal areas," said Liesbeth van der Meer, director of the environmental group Oceana in Chile.</p>

<p>Some conservationists are calling for stricter measures to shield endangered species like the Caspian seal from further harm.</p>

<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a> have proposed a new way to determine when babies gain consciousness. This is an exciting prospect, and their method could help provide some long-sought answers.</p>



<p>Think back to when you were a tiny, squalling bundle of joy. Do you remember those first moments? Did you have a sense of being…well, <em>you</em>? Most of us don't, but deep down, we all want to know when that spark of self-awareness ignited. When did we transform from biological beings into conscious ones?</p>



<p>The idea of pinpointing when a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baby-movements-seem-random-but-help-with-coordination/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baby</a> develops consciousness has fascinated philosophers and scientists for centuries. In the 1600s, philosopher René Descartes theorized that infants might think, but in simpler terms than adults. Even now, it's a question that leaves many of us scratching our heads.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-babies-give-clues-on-their-consciousness">Can babies give clues on their consciousness</h2>



<p>Spoiler alert: they can't. At least, not verbally. This makes studying infant consciousness a real challenge. "We can’t just ask <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baby-talk-sets-the-stage-for-speech-production-in-infants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">babies</a> when they become conscious." Sadly, no baby is going to break their silence with a thoughtful, "Hmm, I'd say around 6 months, actually," explained Dr. Henry Taylor.</p>



<p>Since we can't get answers directly from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-find-the-best-way-to-soothe-a-crying-baby/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infants</a>, researchers suggest looking for scientifically identifiable "markers" of consciousness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consciousness-markers">Consciousness markers</h2>



<p>Think of it like this: you're trying to understand when your best friend started liking a new band. You can't read their mind, but you can look for markers - things like when they started humming the band's tunes, dressing in their merch, etc.</p>



<p>The same applies to consciousness. "For example, imagine that in adults, we know that a certain very specific behavior, or a specific pattern of brain activation always comes along with consciousness," said Dr. Taylor.</p>



<p>"Then, if we can identify when this behaviour or brain activation arises in babies, we have good reason to think that this is when consciousness emerges in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microwaving-baby-food-containers-releases-billions-of-nanoplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">babies</a>. Behaviours and brain activations like this are what we call ‘markers’ of consciousness."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-babies-markers-of-consciousness">Babies markers of consciousness</h2>



<p>A recent study proposed four specific markers of consciousness – some present even before birth. This indicates that consciousness emerges early, maybe even in the third trimester of pregnancy. </p>



<p>However, researchers Dr. Taylor and Professor Andrew Bremner suggest this is overly simplistic. They point to another set of markers that appear later in development:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pointing">Pointing</h3>



<p>This isn't just about chubby toddler fingers. It's about bringing someone's attention to something and checking if they're also focused on it. This social awareness shows a developing sense of self and others.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intentional-control">Intentional control</h3>



<p>Think of a baby deliberately pulling a blanket to get a toy that was out of reach. As Professor Bremner says, this planned action – "intentional means-end coordination of actions" – is a possible marker of consciousness.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-explicit-memory">Explicit memory</h3>



<p>The ability to remember and copy actions later (like playing pretend weeks after seeing someone do it) reveals more complex awareness. It's what researchers call "deferred imitation of actions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complications-with-babies-consciousness">Complications with babies consciousness</h2>



<p>"One of the complicated issues is that it does not look like all the markers point to the same age for the emergence of consciousness," said Dr. Taylor.</p>



<p>Some suggest consciousness arises in those last months of pregnancy, while others hint at around the one-year mark. And let's not forget those super-advanced markers that only crop up in 3-4 year olds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-roadmap-for-consciousness-research">A roadmap for consciousness research</h2>



<p>Professor Bremner urges us to consider a wider range of markers to create "clusters." He explained: "We propose that a broad approach to markers, including those that emerge in early and late stage, is needed."</p>



<p>"We also recommend that a range of developmental models of the onset of consciousness should be considered. For instance, it may be that some markers emerge in one cluster in early development, with others in a later cluster. As well as this there may be a continuous and gradual emergence of certain markers stretching over gestation and throughout early life.”</p>



<p>"We think that by clustering this broad selection of markers, we may finally be able to answer the question which has given us pause for thought for thousands of years. But it’s important to bear in mind that the answer may not be a simple one!” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-research-significance">Research significance</h2>



<p>Understanding the dawn of consciousness isn't just a fun mental puzzle. It opens a huge discussion about the rights of babies and how we care for them. It could change everything from medical practices to our overall understanding of the human experience. </p>



<p>We're one step closer to uncovering the mystery of how that little bundle of reflexes eventually turns into the unique, self-aware <em>person</em> they become.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
