<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>

<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>

<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>In an intriguing new study, a team of researchers led by <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a> has found that African weakly electric fish, also known as elephantnose fish, exhibit a remarkable form of collective sensing akin to a hypothetical scenario where each member of a basketball team could see through the others' eyes. </p>



<p>This shared sensory perception could significantly aid these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-confirms-that-fish-can-recognize-themselves-in-a-mirror/">fish</a> in locating food and identifying allies and adversaries in their environment.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Nathaniel Sawtell, a principal investigator at the Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute and professor of neuroscience at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Federico Pedraja, a postdoctoral research associate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-learning-in-electric-fish-nbsp">Social learning in electric fish&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experts discovered that African weakly electric fish can learn and execute complex, multi-step tasks as a group, a feat that challenges the assumption that advanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-availability-influences-social-learning-among-orangutans/">social learning</a> is unique to humans and hints at elements of cumulative culture within these aquatic creatures.</p>



<p>“In engineering it is common that groups of emitters and receivers work together to improve sensing, for example in sonar and radar. We showed that something similar may be happening in groups of fish that sense their environment using electrical pulses. These fish seem to ‘see’ much better in small groups,” explained Sawtell.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collective-sensing-among-electric-fish-nbsp">Collective sensing among electric fish&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study provides compelling evidence that the electric fish species Gnathonemus petersii performs a swift act of collective sensing, a phenomenon not previously documented in the biological realm.</p>



<p>Electric fish utilize specialized organs to emit and detect electric fields, aiding in communication and an electric form of echolocation for navigating their dark, murky river habitats in Africa.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sophisticated-sensory-abilities-nbsp">Sophisticated sensory abilities&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Considering these challenges, the scientists proposed that these fish might have evolved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pregnancy-affects-the-sensory-abilities-of-mammals/">sensory abilities</a> comparable to networked radar and sonar systems, which can detect objects with greater range and detail through collaboration.</p>



<p>By developing a computer model to simulate the electric environment of these fish, the researchers assessed whether individual electric fish could enhance their object detection capabilities by accessing signals from their peers.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beaming-images-at-the-speed-of-light">Beaming images at the speed of light</h2>



<p>“Think of these external signals as electric images of the objects that nearby electric fish automatically produce and beam to nearby fish at the speed of light,” said Pedraja.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our work suggests that three fish in a group would each receive three different 'electrical views' of the same scene at virtually the same time,” Sawtell added.</p>



<p>One of the simulation's key findings, as noted by Sawtell, is that collective sensing could triple the electro-location range of electric fish, likely providing substantial survival benefits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electrical-communication-nbsp">Electrical communication&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Further investigation sought a neural basis for this ability in <em>G. petersii</em>. Brain recordings related to the electrosensory system revealed that the fish respond to both their own discharges and external electrical signals. The alignment of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fighting-fish-synchronize-their-behavior-and-brain-activity/">brain activity</a> patterns with the simulation predictions was particularly exciting for the scientists.</p>



<p>Behavioral observations reinforced the notion of collective sensing, with the fish forming specific patterns that facilitate shared sensing and engaging in electrical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-disrupts-communication-among-animals/">communication</a> that suggests a coordinated effort. This behavior might be crucial for the fish's collective sensing capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-brains-for-collective-sensing-nbsp">Big brains for collective sensing&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“These fish have some of the biggest brain-to-body mass ratios of any animal on the planet. Perhaps these enormous brains are needed for rapid and highly sophisticated social sensing and collective behavior,” Sawtell said.</p>



<p>This discovery opens new paths for exploring animal intelligence and social learning evolution, challenging existing beliefs and offering insights into potential applications in artificial sensing technologies, including underwater autonomous vehicles and medical imaging.</p>

<p>Paleontologists have unearthed a fascinating new species of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-marine-lizard-italy/">marine lizard</a> that thrived just before the dinosaurs' reign came to an end. The species, known as <em>Khinjaria acuta</em>, possessed formidable dagger-like teeth, painting a picture of a vastly different marine ecosystem than what exists today.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This ancient ocean was populated by a plethora of large predatory creatures that fed on sizable prey, in stark contrast to contemporary ecosystems where a limited number of apex predators, such as the great white shark, the orca, and the leopard seal, hold dominion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giant-marine-lizards-nbsp">Giant marine lizards&nbsp;</h2>



<p><em>Khinjaria acuta</em> was a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-mosasaur-species-discovered-with-strange-screwdriver-like-teeth/">mosasaur</a>, a group not directly related to dinosaurs but rather to giant marine lizards, akin to today's Komodo dragons and anacondas. These creatures dominated the seas about 66 million years ago, contemporaneously with the Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops.</p>



<p>The newly discovered species boasted powerful jaws and long, dagger-like teeth, making it a fearsome predator within the rich and varied predator community in the Atlantic Ocean near Morocco.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-khinjaria-fossils">Khinjaria fossils</h2>



<p>The findings are based on the examination of a skull and skeletal parts unearthed in a phosphate mine southeast of Casablanca, involving a collaborative effort from researchers at the <a href="https://www.bath.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bath</a>, UK, the <a href="https://www.nature.com/nature-index/institution-outputs/morocco/museum-of-natural-history-of-marrakech/645cab8cc794a294b40c9022" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marrakech Museum of Natural History</a>, the <a href="https://www.mnhn.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle</a> (NMNH) in Paris, France, the <a href="https://www.smu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southern Methodist University</a> in Texas, USA, and the <a href="https://www.ehu.eus/en/en-home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of the Basque Country</a>, Bilbao.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extraordinary-diversity-nbsp">Extraordinary diversity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dr. Nick Longrich, from the University of Bath, who led the study, remarked on the exceptional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/">predator</a> diversity, noting that several species exceeded the size of a great white shark. Moreover, each species showcased different dental adaptations, indicative of varied hunting strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Some mosasaurs had teeth to pierce prey, others to cut, tear, or crush. Now we have <em>Khinjaria</em>, with a short face full of huge, dagger-shaped teeth. This is one of the most diverse marine faunas seen anywhere, at any time in history, and it existed just before the marine reptiles and the dinosaurs went extinct.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-asteroid-impact-nbsp">Asteroid impact&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This diverse marine life existed on the brink of cataclysm, just before an asteroid impact in the Yucatan Peninsula ushered in a mass extinction event. The event obliterated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-were-going-strong-when-the-deadly-asteroid-struck/">dinosaurs</a> and led to the diversification of surviving mammals, birds, and lizards on land, while similarly transformative effects occurred in the oceans.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The aftermath saw the disappearance of mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and giant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-sea-turtles-have-returned-to-the-same-place-to-eat-for-3000-years/">sea turtles</a>, making way for the evolution of whales, seals, and certain fish species. However, the post-impact ecosystem markedly differed from its predecessor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecosystem-structure-nbsp">Ecosystem structure&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“There seems to have been a huge change in the ecosystem structure in the past 66 million years,” Longrich added, highlighting the unusual diversity and abundance of apex predators in the Late Cretaceous compared to modern marine communities, where large predators are fewer.</p>



<p>“The Phosphates of Morocco deposit in a shallow and warm epicontinental sea, under a system of upwellings; these zones are caused by currents of deep, cold, nutrient-rich waters rising towards the surface, providing food for large numbers of sea creatures and, as a result, supporting a lot of predators. This is probably one of the explanations for this extraordinary palaeobiodiversity observed in Morocco at the end of the Cretaceous,” said senior author Nathalie Bardet, a paleontologist at NMNH.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-khinjaria-a-new-mosasaur">Khinjaria, a new mosasaur </h2>



<p>Study co-author Nour-Eddine Jalil, a paleontologist at the same institution, further explained the significance of the Moroccan phosphate deposits: “The phosphates of Morocco immerse us in the Upper Cretaceous seas during the latest geological times of the dinosaurs’ age. No deposit has provided so many fossils and so many species from this period.”</p>



<p>“After the 'titan of the seas,' Thalassotitan, the ‘saw-toothed’ mosasaur Xenodens, the ‘star-toothed’ mosasaur, Stelladens and many others, now there is Khinjaria, a new mosasaur with dagger-like teeth. The elongation of the posterior part of the skull which accommodated the jaw musculature suggests a terrible biting force,” he concluded.</p>

<p>These atmospheric phenomena, characterized by large, <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/cavum-clouds_hole-punch-clouds_resemble-ufo_nasa_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">circular openings in the clouds</a>, with delicate, feathery trails within, have sparked imaginations and fueled speculation about their origins, including theories of <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/cavum-clouds_hole-punch-clouds_resemble-ufo_closeup_nasa_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UFOs and extraterrestrial activity</a>.</p>



<p>However, the true explanation behind these mesmerizing cloud holes is both terrestrial and thoroughly scientific.</p>

<p>An impressive example of cavum clouds was observed over the Gulf of Mexico near Florida's west coast on January 30, 2024. </p>



<p>Captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (<a href="https://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/about/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MODIS</a>) aboard NASA's Terra satellite, this image provides a stunning view from above, showcasing the natural beauty and complexity of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistant-bacteria-have-been-found-in-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cloud</a> formations.</p>



<p>The intrigue surrounding cavum clouds has been a topic of scientific discourse since the 1940s, with various hypotheses proposed over the decades. </p>



<p>However, it wasn't until a comprehensive study conducted by scientists from the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (<a href="https://www.ucar.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCAR</a>) and their colleagues, including those from NASA’s Langley Research Center, that a definitive explanation was provided. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-the-spectacle">Science behind the spectacle</h2>



<p>Published in 2010 and 2011, their research demonstrated that these cloud formations are caused by aircraft, dispelling more fantastical theories.</p>



<p>Altocumulus clouds are mid-level <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-clouds-may-be-affecting-the-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clouds</a> consisting of supercooled liquid water droplets. Supercooling occurs when water droplets remain liquid even at temperatures below water's typical freezing point, due to their purity and absence of particles like dust or pollen that would normally initiate ice formation. </p>



<p>This phenomenon is relatively common in the Earth's atmosphere, particularly within altocumulus clouds, which cover approximately 8% of the Earth's surface at any given time and are mostly composed of droplets supercooled to around -15°C.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-airplanes-influence-cloud-formations">How airplanes influence cloud formations</h2>



<p>The formation of cavum clouds is initiated when airplanes disrupt these delicate atmospheric conditions. As aircraft move through these clouds, the air around their wings and propellers undergoes adiabatic expansion, cooling the water droplets further, sometimes by more than 20°C. </p>



<p>This cooling can prompt the supercooled droplets to freeze, starting a chain reaction where ice crystals form and grow, eventually becoming heavy enough to fall. </p>



<p>This process leaves behind a void in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/high-co2-levels-stratus-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cloud layer</a>, with the falling ice crystals creating the wispy trails known as virga visible in the center of the cavum.</p>



<p>The UCAR-led research, utilizing aircraft flight data, satellite observations, and weather models, revealed the dynamics of how these cloud holes form and their duration. </p>

<p>The study found that the shape and size of the cavum depend on the angle at which planes intersect the cloud layer -- sharp angles produce small, circular cavum, while shallow angles result in elongated "canal clouds" adorned with virga trails.</p>



<p>Factors such as the cloud layer's thickness, air temperature, and the degree of horizontal wind shear also play roles in creating these cloud holes. </p>



<p>The researchers' analysis indicated that aircraft of various types, from large passenger jets to turboprops, are capable of creating cavum and canal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-shards-in-antarctic-clouds-heat-up-the-southern-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clouds</a>. </p>

<p>A new study led by the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado Boulder</a> alerts us to the possibility of experiencing virtually ice-free summers in the Arctic within just a few years. </p>



<p>The research indicates that the Arctic may witness its first day without significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/less-ice-and-more-sunlight-may-drastically-alter-the-arctic-ocean/">ice</a> much sooner than past models, which estimated ice-free periods of a month or longer, had predicted. </p>



<p>This shift could happen over a decade earlier than previously thought, and this pattern holds true across all potential future emissions scenarios.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-free-months-in-the-arctic-nbsp">Ice-free months in the Arctic&nbsp;</h2>



<p>By the 2050s, it's expected that the Arctic will endure a whole month each September, the time of lowest sea ice, without its characteristic floating ice.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By the century's close, depending on the trajectory of global emissions, the region could see several months each year without ice, with a high-emission scenario possibly leading to a consistently ice-free state even during some winter months.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drastic-reduction-in-sea-ice">Drastic reduction in sea ice</h2>



<p>However, "ice-free" in scientific terms doesn't imply a complete absence of ice. The term is used when sea ice extent falls below one million square kilometers -- a drastic reduction from the seasonal minimum coverage of the 1980s, which was less than 20% of its former extent. Recently, September sea ice levels have hovered around 3.3 million square kilometers.</p>



<p>Leading the study, Alexandra Jahn, an associate professor at CU Boulder, delved into sea ice projections and utilized climate models to evaluate future daily changes in Arctic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-ice-loss-increases-snowfall-over-west-antarctica/">sea ice</a> coverage. The findings suggest the Arctic could experience days with less than one square kilometer of sea ice much earlier than indicated by monthly averages - up to 18 years sooner in some projections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-the-arctic-s-ice-free-days">Predicting the Arctic's ice-free days</h2>



<p>Jahn emphasizes the importance of predicting these first ice-free days, which will be evident in daily satellite data, to understand the changes occurring in the Arctic. She projects that, under every emissions scenario, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-arctic-ocean-was-filled-with-freshwater-at-least-twice-in-history/">Arctic Ocean</a> might face its first ice-free day between the late 2020s and the 2030s, likely in late August or early September.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-shrinking-sea-ice">Consequences of shrinking sea ice</h2>



<p>The decline in sea ice, largely driven by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/">greenhouse gas emissions</a>, not only accelerates the Arctic's warming by reducing the reflective snow and ice cover but also threatens Arctic wildlife dependent on sea ice, like seals and polar bears.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The potential invasion of non-native fish species into the warming Arctic waters and their impact on local ecosystems is a growing concern too. Furthermore, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-protected-areas-improve-well-being-in-coastal-communities/">coastal communities</a> face increased risks from larger ocean waves and coastal erosion as sea ice recedes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fate-of-the-arctic-depends-on-emissions">Fate of the Arctic depends on emissions</h2>



<p>Jahn points out that while an ice-free Arctic seems inevitable, the frequency of such conditions will depend on future emission levels. An intermediate emissions pathway, which mirrors our current course, might limit ice-free periods to late summer and early fall.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the highest emissions scenario could result in the Arctic being ice-free for as long as nine months by the end of the century, marking a significant transformation of the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aggressive-climate-action-is-needed">Aggressive climate action is needed</h2>



<p>Despite these daunting projections, there's a silver lining: Arctic sea ice has the capacity to recover quickly with atmospheric cooling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Unlike the ice sheet in Greenland that took thousands of years to build, even if we melt all the Arctic sea ice, if we can then figure out how to take CO2 back out of the atmosphere in the future to reverse warming, sea ice will come back within a decade,” Jahn said. </p>



<p>This resilience highlights the critical need for aggressive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ipcc-climate-action-urgently-needed-to-end-human-suffering/">climate action</a> to mitigate and potentially reverse these changes.</p>

<p>These studies delve into the concept of "valence weighting bias," a psychological term that explains how individuals make decisions based on their internal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/positivity-and-emotional-awareness-can-add-years-to-your-life/">positive</a> or negative attitudes. Specifically, this bias influences whether people approach or delay tasks perceived as unpleasant.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-dynamics-of-procrastination">The dynamics of procrastination </h2>



<p>Russell Fazio, a professor of psychology and senior author of the study, along with Javier Granados Samayoa, a former graduate student at the university, embarked on research to understand the dynamics between negativity, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/look-at-stress-as-a-challenge-rather-than-a-threat/">positivity</a>, and task delay. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that individuals with a tendency to focus on negative aspects are more likely to procrastinate. However, there's a silver lining: the research indicates it's possible to recalibrate this negative bias towards a more neutral outlook, thereby reducing procrastination.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valence-weighting-bias-and-procrastination">Valence weighting bias and procrastination</h2>



<p>The researchers conducted three studies to explore the relationship between valence weighting bias and procrastination. The first study assessed participants' <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eight-healthy-lifestyle-habits-could-extend-your-life-by-decades/">habits</a> concerning filing federal tax returns, a universally daunting task. They found that individuals with a stronger negative weighting bias were more likely to delay filing their taxes.</p>



<p>Granados Samayoa explained: "Our findings indicate that individuals who generally adopt a more negative outlook tend to postpone tasks unnecessarily." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-self-control-and-motivation">Self-control and motivation </h2>



<p>The tendency to procrastinate was further examined in a second study involving 147 college students. This study not only looked at valence weighting bias but also considered the students' self-control and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-influences-our-motivation-to-exercise/">motivation</a>. </p>



<p>The results revealed that students with a negative bias and lower motivation or emotional energy for self-control were more inclined to delay participating in research programs, essential for accumulating course credits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-balanced-perspective">A balanced perspective</h2>



<p>The third study aimed to establish a causal link between valence weighting bias and task completion. By manipulating the valence weighting bias among a group of self-identified procrastinators, the researchers observed a notable shift. </p>



<p>Students exposed to a balanced perspective of positive and negative signals engaged in tasks more promptly compared to a control group stuck in their negative biases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-realistic-self-assessment">Realistic self-assessment</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the research also highlights that a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rewriting-negative-memories-by-activating-positive-ones/">negative</a> weighting bias isn't solely detrimental. It can foster a more realistic self-assessment in situations like evaluating one's preparedness for an exam. </p>



<p>"A balanced approach, rather than swaying to extremes, tends to be more beneficial. However, the impact of a specific bias varies by context," said Fazio.</p>



<p>Supported by the John Templeton Foundation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, this study not only sheds light on the mechanics of procrastination but also offers hope for those struggling with it. </p>



<p>By understanding and adjusting our valence weighting biases, we might find ourselves not only facing tasks more promptly but also approaching them with a more balanced and realistic mindset.</p>

<p>Researchers from <a href="https://www.monash.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Monash University</a> have unveiled startling data concerning the global impact of short-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-air-pollution-levels-have-dropped-but-not-for-everyone/">air pollution</a>. The study has revealed that a shocking number of premature deaths can be attributed to short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5).&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers found that breathing in PM2.5 for even a few hours, and up to a few days, results in more than a million premature deaths worldwide every year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-the-focus-to-short-term-pollution">Shifting the focus to short-term pollution</h2>



<p>The study, led by Professor Yuming Guo, underscores the lethal consequences of brief episodes of high air pollution.</p>



<p>This revelation shifts the focus from the long-term effects of persistent air pollution, which have been extensively studied, to the equally deadly but less understood short-term spikes in PM2.5 levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-short-term-pollution-exposure">Short-term pollution exposure</h2>



<p>The experts analyzed mortality and PM2.5 pollution levels across more than 13,000 cities and towns globally over two decades, up until 2019. </p>



<p>The results highlight the urgent need for addressing air pollution not just as a chronic urban challenge but as an acute threat that can arise suddenly and with devastating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oil-and-gas-production-linked-to-77-billion-in-annual-health-care-costs/">health impacts</a>. </p>



<p>The researchers found that over 50% of the deaths attributable to short-term PM2.5 exposure occur in Eastern Asia, presenting a significant public health challenge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-greatest-mortality-burden-nbsp">The greatest mortality burden&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Asia, as the study indicates, bears the brunt of the mortality burden, with approximately 65.2% of global deaths due to short-term PM2.5 exposure. Africa follows with 17.0%, Europe with 12.1%, the Americas with 5.6%, and Oceania with a minimal 0.1%.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These statistics underscore a disproportionate impact on Asia and Africa, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in these regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-interventions-needed-in-urban-areas">Public health interventions needed in urban areas</h2>



<p>The experts also determined that more than one fifth (22.74%) of the short-term exposure-related deaths occurred in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-nature-affect-human-health-in-urban-areas/">urban areas</a>. This underscores the lethal synergy of high population densities and air pollution spikes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Cities and towns, often scenes of dramatic pollution episodes due to landscape fires, dust storms, or industrial emissions, emerge as critical areas for public health interventions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fire-related-air-pollution">Fire-related air pollution</h2>



<p>The team also pinpointed the specific challenges that are faced by different regions. For example, while most areas in Australia experienced a slight decrease in the number of deaths attributable to short-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fine-particle-pollution-may-cause-children-to-develop-asthma/">PM2.5 exposure</a>, the fraction of deaths attributable to such exposure has actually increased.</p>



<p>This is potentially due to the rising frequency and intensity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/australian-bushfires-triggered-rare-multi-year-la-nina/">bushfire events</a>, like those experienced during the "Black Summer" of 2019-20.</p>



<p>Professor Guo said these megafires were estimated to have led to 429 smoke-related premature deaths and 3,230 hospital admissions as a result of acute and persistent exposure to extremely high levels of bushfire-related air pollution. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To mitigate the acute health damages of high PM2.5 concentrations, there is a need for targeted interventions. These could include air-pollution warning systems, community evacuation plans, and public health initiatives designed to minimize exposure during pollution spikes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Imagine buying something online, only to discover it's completely different from what you ordered. That's exactly what's happening with online drugs. According to a new study by <a href="https://www.rmit.edu.au/content/rmit/au/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RMIT University</a> in Australia, over one third of illegal drugs bought on the dark web are contaminated.</p>



<p>This revelation highlights the dangers of buying drugs online and the urgent need for more drug checking services in Australia.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-buying-illegal-drugs-online">Buying illegal drugs online</h2>



<p>Researchers in Australia investigated the online drug market by analyzing 103 samples purchased from anonymous platforms or cryptomarkets.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These marketplaces, operating on the dark web, offer a seemingly easy and discreet way to obtain various drugs. The platforms have grown in popularity, attracting users from all walks of life including individuals seeking recreational drugs, people struggling with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-addiction-may-qualify-as-substance-use-disorder/">addiction</a>, and even those who are just curiously tempted by online anonymity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deceptive-drug-descriptions">Deceptive drug descriptions</h2>



<p>The study revealed that while 65% of the drugs matched their online descriptions, this seemingly positive finding can be misleading. It might suggest a level of trustworthiness among some vendors, but a deeper look uncovers a concerning reality.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drug-adulteration-nbsp">Drug adulteration&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Overall, 14% of the samples contained additional substances not mentioned online. This practice of adding unknown substances, called adulteration, can lead to dangerous and even lethal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/americans-have-a-shocking-dependency-on-prescription-drugs/">drug interactions</a>, as consumers unknowingly ingest a mix of unknown chemicals.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drug-substitution-nbsp">Drug substitution&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Even more concerning was the finding that 21% of the drugs did not contain the advertised substances at all. This complete substitution poses serious health risks, as consumers have no idea what they're actually ingesting.</p>



<p>“Cryptomarkets allow anonymous buyers to review purchases, which theoretically means vendors who sell inferior products are more likely to receive bad reviews, thereby rewarding vendors selling superior products," said Dr Monica Barratt.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>"But despite this perception of accountability and quality, our findings show prohibited drugs purchased from cryptomarkets are still not safe from adulteration and substitution."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-highest-adulteration-in-cocaine">Highest adulteration in cocaine</h2>



<p>Cocaine users faced a particularly high risk of receiving adulterated products. Unlike drugs such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mdma-makes-people-cooperative/">MDMA</a>, methamphetamine, and heroin, which were less often contaminated, cocaine samples frequently contained other substances, diluting their purity and increasing the danger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-novel-psychoactive-substances-nbsp">Novel psychoactive substances&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Novel psychoactive substances (NPS), also known as designer drugs or legal highs, are a group of new drugs designed to mimic the effects of illegal drugs like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/infectious-pathogen-has-spread-to-90-percent-of-cannabis-farms-in-california/">cannabis</a>, cocaine, and LSD. They are sometimes synthetic versions of existing drugs, aiming to either avoid existing drug laws or provide stronger or different effects.</p>



<p>The recent study found various types of NPS in the tested drugs. These new drugs can be significantly stronger than the ones they imitate, potentially leading to heightened heart rate, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traffic-pollution-has-an-immediate-impact-on-blood-pressure/">blood pressure</a>, and, in extreme cases, fatal overdose.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-social-media-apps">Using social media apps</h2>



<p>A survey from 2023 shows fewer people are buying drugs on the dark web, preferring messaging and social media apps instead. These apps are easier to use but lack the security and buyer protection found on darknet markets.</p>



<p>Australian authorities focus on shutting down darknet markets to deter drug sales. However, this approach might not be effective because sellers quickly move to other markets, minimizing the impact of individual takedowns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“These days, vendors have accounts across many markets, in case one goes down, their clients can find them on other markets. This mitigates against the disruption of a takedown,” noted Dr. Barratt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-drugs-on-the-dark-web">Drugs on the dark web</h2>



<p>As people find new ways to get illegal drugs, it's crucial to set up more services that check the contents of these drugs. Currently, there is only one such service called CanTEST in Australia, with two other states planning to launch similar programs.</p>



<p>Illegal drug marketplaces seem safe and anonymous, but they can be dangerous. There are hidden risks that buyers might not realize. Also, while anonymity protects buyers, it also protects bad sellers, making it impossible to hold anyone responsible if something goes wrong.</p>



<p>The study highlights that people often underestimate the risks associated with drugs on the dark web. Stronger safety measures are needed - both online and in the real world - to protect people from the hidden dangers of these markets.</p>

Drugs on the dark web often contain unidentified ingredients

<p>We've all heard the warnings: staring at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toddler-screen-time-linked-to-atypical-sensory-behaviors/">screens</a> before bed disrupts sleep, thanks to the artificial blue light they emit. But is the truth really that simple?&nbsp;</p>



<p>A recent report by the <a href="https://www.icnirp.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection</a> (ICNIRP) suggests that the story might be more complex than we think.</p>



<p>"Our modern society allows for increasing exposure to light in the evening, significantly more than humans have been exposed to for the past approximately 300,000 years of evolution," noted the experts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In the past couple of decades, the use of mobile devices, e.g., smartphones, laptops, and tablets has increased exponentially, potentially resulting in a significant amount of light entering our pupils after daylight hours."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-impacts-of-short-wavelength-light">Health impacts of short wavelength light</h2>



<p>Blue light is a type of visible light detectable by the human eye. It packs more energy, compared to other visible light. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exposure-to-sunlight-enhances-libido/">Sunlight</a> is the main source of blue light, but it is also emitted by many artificial sources including the screens of televisions, computers, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-blue-light-from-smartphones-may-accelerate-aging/">smartphones</a>, and tablets. This artificial blue light is known as short wavelength light.</p>



<p>The scientists investigated existing studies to understand the impact of short wavelength light on people, both in the short term and long term. They were particularly interested in how SWL might influence our sleep.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-evidence-on-blue-light-and-sleep">Conflicting evidence on blue light and sleep</h2>



<p>Surprisingly, the studies have produced mixed results. Some studies found significant negative impacts, while others found little to no effect.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts suggest that this inconsistency might be due to differences in how the studies were conducted, such as the intensity, duration, and timing of blue light exposure, as well as the characteristics of the people involved in the studies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The majority of studies that have assessed circadian disruption due to exposure to light have been conducted in shift workers,” the ICNIRP panel reports. “In these studies, shift workers’ exposure to light during biological night has been taken for granted without direct measurements of their light exposure.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-artificial-blue-light-and-alertness">Artificial blue light and alertness</h2>



<p>There is also inconclusive evidence on how short wavelength light affects alertness. While some studies suggest that it can make people less sleepy, the evidence is not yet clear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, the effects might also depend on when people are exposed to it. In some cases, exposure to artificial blue light during the day has been linked to feeling more alert. However, the effects of nighttime exposure on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-quality-is-determined-by-daily-activities/">sleep quality</a> and alertness are still unclear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lack-of-consensus-on-health-nbsp">Lack of consensus on health&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Sleep helps our bodies function properly, including our immune system, memory, and emotions. With the rise of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oxygen-levels-on-distant-planets-reveal-presence-of-alien-technology/">technology</a>, there is concern that the blue light emitted from screens and lights can disrupt sleep.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the ICNIRP team did not find clear agreement among scientists about the long-term health effects of short wavelength light. Some studies suggest there are potential risks, but others find minimal impact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-call-for-high-quality-research">Call for high-quality research</h2>



<p>The expert panel is still unsure whether artificial blue light has negative health consequences. They acknowledge the public's interest in this topic and emphasize the need for more research.</p>



<p>According to their recommendations, existing studies should be reviewed more thoroughly to gain a better understanding of SWL's effects. Additionally, they call for well-designed studies to specifically investigate the long-term consequences of repeated exposure to artificial blue light.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"It has generally been assumed that exposure to SWL at night will cause alertness and affect sleep quality," wrote the researchers. "However, due to limited data and conflicting results regarding effects on alertness, sleepiness, and sleep it is not possible to reach a conclusion about effects on these outcomes."&nbsp;</p>



<p>"This is the case for both nighttime and daytime exposure. Thus, more high-quality experimental studies are needed to answer the question of whether SWL exposure at night affects alertness and sleep more than exposure at other times of the day."</p>

<p>A new study in England's green apple groves shows that insects like ladybugs and hoverflies help with apple pest control. Researchers discovered that planting wildflower borders around plants provides a natural home for beneficial insects. These helpful predators target pests that would otherwise damage the apples by threatening the crop's health and economic value.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.</p>



<p>Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
