<p>Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. </p>



<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>Tiny fragments known as microplastics are finding their way into the Gulf of Mexico, a region teeming with marine life and critical to global seafood supplies. </p>



<p>New research shows just how much these particles are concentrating in waters where sea turtles, red snapper, and dolphins live.</p>



<p>Scientists used computer models to track the movement of microplastics in the northern Gulf of Mexico over a three-year period. The results not only reveal where these pollutants end up but also explain which sources matter most.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rivers-drive-the-plastic-crisis">Rivers drive the plastic crisis</h2>



<p>The study challenges a long-standing assumption about where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-escaping-from-water-treatment-plants/">microplastics</a> come from. Wastewater treatment plants have often been blamed as major culprits. Instead, the modeling shows rivers are the main pathway carrying plastic particles into the Gulf.</p>



<p>“The Gulf of Mexico, especially its northern part near the southern U.S., is increasingly polluted by tiny plastic particles called microplastics,” noted study co-author Annalisa Bracco, CMCC scientist.</p>



<p>“We used computer models to study how these plastics move over short periods (about a month) across three years. We looked at different sizes and types of plastics and found that most pollution comes from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alarming-levels-of-microplastics-found-in-every-major-european-river/">rivers</a> and not from wastewater treatment plants.”</p>



<p>The team found that different plastics behave differently once they enter the water. Heavier ones sink and settle on the seafloor. Lighter particles float and resist the pull of waves, traveling longer distances. </p>



<p>The research also identified a hotspot of microplastic buildup west of the Mississippi River Delta - an area that happens to be vital for many marine species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-in-critical-habitats">Microplastics in critical habitats</h2>



<p>The study didn’t stop at mapping plastic movements. It overlaid pollution patterns with detailed data on where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastic-pollution-found-in-every-aquatic-species-tested/">marine animals</a> live. This step created a clear picture of how microplastics overlap with critical habitats.</p>



<p>Bracco calls this the most important outcome of the work. The overlap highlights risks not only for wildlife but also for people. </p>



<p>“The fact that plastic impacts regions of intense fishery (which means we’re ingesting some) is often the best way to activate a policy response or gain public interest,” she said.</p>



<p>This connection between pollution and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seafood-is-underestimated-source-of-pfas-exposure-in-humans/">seafood</a> matters. The Gulf of Mexico supports major commercial fisheries. If fish and shellfish in these waters carry microplastics, those particles could reach dinner plates around the world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-roadmap-for-action">A roadmap for action</h2>



<p>The research involved not just seasoned scientists but also an undergraduate student from <a href="https://www.gatech.edu/">Georgia Tech</a> who contributed species distribution data. Their combined efforts go beyond documenting the problem. </p>



<p>By identifying specific pollution sources, the study offers tools for targeting cleanup and prevention.</p>



<p>“It is important to show how state-of-the-art modeling tools can be used to address coastal problems that interest the general public,” said Bracco. </p>



<p>“It is somewhat easier to raise awareness of the risks associated with plastic pollution (just one of the many anthropogenic threats) when linking it to fish, turtles, and dolphins instead of simply delivering the likely plastic distribution maps.”</p>



<p>In practical terms, this means policymakers can act on evidence of where microplastics enter the Gulf and where they accumulate. Addressing these hotspots could reduce long-term impacts on both ecosystems and the seafood industry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-beyond-the-gulf">Looking beyond the Gulf</h2>



<p>The modeling framework created for this project has value far beyond the United States. Other coastal regions face similar pollution problems, and the approach could be adapted worldwide. CMCC’s Global Coastal Ocean division is already positioned to take this next step.</p>



<p>“This project is setting a framework for, hopefully, more similar efforts to come,” Bracco said. </p>



<p>“In other words, it is important to look for ways to make our research relevant to everyday life (in this case the fish we consume) to help put in motion the change that is needed.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-and-their-hidden-costs">Microplastics and their hidden costs</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastic-pollution-is-everywhere-even-in-newborns-and-getting-worse/">Microplastic pollution</a> is often described as invisible, but its consequences are anything but. These particles threaten species we depend on and disrupt ecosystems we barely understand. </p>



<p>By showing how plastics move and where they accumulate, the Gulf of Mexico study makes the issue visible in a new way.</p>



<p>It also gives people a reason to care. When pollution is tied to food security, health, and jobs, the problem is no longer abstract. It’s a challenge that affects everyone who relies on the ocean - which is, in one way or another, all of us.</p>

Microplastics threaten marine life in the Gulf of Mexico

<p>Imagine Earth has a giant set of underground “storage lockers” where we can tuck away carbon dioxide (CO₂) for centuries so it doesn’t heat the planet. Scientists call this geologic carbon storage. </p>



<p>It sounds simple: capture CO₂ from factories, power plants, or even the air, pipe it deep underground into the tiny spaces inside certain rocks, and lock it there.</p>



<p>For years, underground storage of carbon dioxide looked and felt like a clever climate trick. Capture the gas, lock it in rock layers, and keep burning fossil fuels while claiming progress. </p>



<p>The idea seemed safe because early estimates suggested nearly limitless space.</p>



<p>That illusion has collapsed. New research shows the planet’s usable underground storage capacity is far smaller than imagined. Instead of centuries of security, this cushion could run out within 200 years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-drops-sharply">Carbon storage drops sharply</h2>



<p>Industry once placed global capacity at around 14,000 gigatons. A closer look, however, strips away risky regions - earthquake zones, fragile <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/construction-materials-could-store-carbon-in-homes-and-buildings-helping-the-climate/">ecosystems</a>, and crowded cities. What remains is only about 1,460 gigatonnes.</p>



<p>This tenfold drop changes everything. What once seemed endless is now a resource with strict boundaries, one that must be managed carefully. Every choice about how it is used carries long-term consequences. </p>



<p>If reserved for short-term fixes, the world risks burning through it quickly. If protected for carbon removal, it could become a critical lifeline for stabilizing temperatures far into the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risks-hidden-beneath-the-surface">Risks hidden beneath the surface</h2>



<p>Underground storage carries hazards. Injecting carbon can stir up seismic activity, reactivate faults, or open escape paths. Leaks into aquifers could acidify water and release toxic metals. </p>



<p>Offshore storage avoids some human risks but adds cost and geopolitical disputes. Public pushback also limits expansion, with some governments blocking projects altogether.</p>



<p>Opposition often stems from fears of leaks, distrust of industry promises, and concerns that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">storage</a> will be used to justify continued fossil fuel use. </p>



<p>These challenges mean underground storage cannot expand smoothly or universally; every project faces technical, political, and social barriers that slow progress and shrink real-world potential.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-s-uncertain-future">Carbon storage’s uncertain future</h2>



<p>Climate plans already assume storage will be vital to reach net zero. But if it mainly serves fossil fuel plants, reserves could vanish by 2200 - and every decade of delay accelerates that timeline. </p>



<p>Deep emission cuts now ease future pressure, while procrastination forces heavier reliance on shrinking storage space. </p>



<p>One promising strategy is to prioritize underground capacity for carbon removal rather than fossil fuel capture.</p>



<p>Direct air capture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abandoned-farmland-can-be-used-for-climate-change-mitigation/">bioenergy</a> with carbon storage could actively draw carbon out of the atmosphere, offering a cooling effect. </p>



<p>If the full capacity were dedicated to this role, global temperatures could fall by as much as 0.7 °C (1.3 °F), though in practice the impact may be closer to 0.4 °C (0.7 °F) because the climate system doesn’t respond perfectly symmetrically to removal and emission.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reserves-unevenly-spread-worldwide">Reserves unevenly spread worldwide</h2>



<p>Storage is not shared fairly across the globe. The United States, Russia, and Australia hold large, stable reserves. Europe and India lose far more under stricter risk rules.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, some nations in Africa and South America have vast potential but little historic responsibility for emissions. That imbalance raises thorny questions of justice - who gets to use the storage, and on what terms. </p>



<p>Should wealthy nations pay for access to reserves in countries that contributed less to the crisis? Or should those with the largest reserves prioritize their own development needs first? </p>



<p>These questions highlight deep inequalities that will shape future climate negotiations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storage-can-only-buy-time">Storage can only buy time</h2>



<p>Some experts argue the true potential is larger, pointing to decades of safe use in oil and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-natural-hydrogen-deposit-discovery-is-worth-a-staggering-184-billion/">gas reservoirs</a>. </p>



<p>They note that many depleted fields have held fluids securely for millions of years and could continue to hold injected carbon just as reliably.</p>



<p>Supporters of this view see existing infrastructure and technical expertise as proof that storage can operate at much greater scale than the conservative estimates suggest.</p>



<p>Even so, most researchers caution against treating underground storage as a limitless solution. It was never designed to be the final answer to climate change. </p>



<p>At best, it should function as a bridge - a temporary measure that buys time while renewables expand, low-carbon industries mature, and societies shift away from fossil fuels.</p>



<p>In that sense, storage is less a cure and more a stabilizer, easing the transition without promising permanence. Its real value lies in supporting broader change, not replacing it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-future-depends-on-choices">Carbon future depends on choices</h2>



<p>The message is clear: underground storage is limited, risky, and unevenly distributed. It can help, but only if used strategically. </p>



<p>That means prioritizing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/states-taking-action-on-their-own-can-cut-half-of-u-s-emissions/">emission cuts</a>, expanding clean energy, and reserving storage for removing carbon already in the air.</p>



<p>Treating it as infinite would squander one of the few tools that could still reverse warming, leaving future generations with fewer options, higher risks, and a far narrower path to a stable climate.</p>

Earth has 10x less space for underground carbon storage than we thought - any other ideas?

Imagine Earth has a giant set of underground “storage lockers”...

<p>A heavy, round lump of metal turned up during routine yard work in Särdal, a coastal village in southwestern Sweden. The object looked ancient and purposeful - a finished piece, not raw ore. It was an Iron Age ingot, cast in a plano-convex shape: flat on one side, rounded on the other. </p>



<p>That form wasn’t for style. It made pieces stack cleanly on carts and boats and melt quickly when reheated in a furnace.</p>



<p>At first glance, the shape suggested the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_Age" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bronze Age</a>. That period is known for plano-convex cakes of copper and bronze moving around Europe in hoards and ship cargoes. </p>



<p>But a single artifact can be tricky to date when it appears alone. No pottery, no coins, no bones. In cases like this, archaeology leans on chemistry to separate guesswork from evidence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dating-an-iron-age-ingot">Dating an Iron Age ingot</h2>



<p>Shape is a hint, not a verdict. The same profile can show up across centuries because it solves a simple problem: transport metal efficiently. When an object lacks a firm archaeological context, lab methods step in to read what the eye can’t.</p>



<p>Researchers sampled the ingot and ran two kinds of tests. Elemental analysis measured which metals were present and in what proportions. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/remarkable-viking-silver-hoard-discovery-reveals-far-reaching-global-trade-links/">Lead isotope analysis</a> provided a chemical fingerprint that could match metal to ore fields with distinct geological signatures. Those numbers changed the story. </p>



<p>“Due, in particular, to its shape and size, it seemed to us a Bronze Age artifact, but the ingot turned out to be made of a copper-zinc-tin-lead alloy, typical of the Iron Age and later periods,” says Serena Sabatini, an archaeologist at the <a href="https://www.gu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Gothenburg</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-alloy-matters">Why the alloy matters</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/high-grade-copper-discovered-in-a-promising-new-mineralized-zone/">Copper</a> with zinc, tin, and lead indicates an Iron Age recipe rather than the classic Bronze Age use of copper or tin bronze. </p>



<p>That places the object in a later technological world, one that blended materials for workable casting, brighter color, and a reliable flow into molds. </p>



<p>With that shift, Sweden now has its first complete Iron Age plano-convex ingot on record, a tidy piece of evidence that tightens Scandinavia’s link to wider trade.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-object-up-close">The object up close</h2>



<p>The ingot is compact and practical - and not much to look at. Its flat face helps it sit still; the domed face makes it easy to lift and stack. It isn’t decorative. </p>



<p>It’s the kind of piece a smith would melt without a second thought, confident it would flow cleanly into a new mold. </p>



<p>After centuries in the ground, it still held enough chemical memory to flag its era and hint at its path.</p>

<p>Lead isotopes serve as signatures formed in the metal during smelting. </p>



<p>When the Swedish team compared the ingot’s values to databases of known ore sources, the best match pointed to southwestern Spain.</p>



<p>That region has produced copper for millennia, and ancient mining districts there are well studied. </p>



<p>A link from Iberia to Scandinavia might seem far, but it fits a larger pattern of goods moving both ways: amber traveling south; wine, glass, and metals heading north.</p>



<p>Chemical details did more than place the Swedish ingot in time. They also lined up closely with a group of long, slender ingot rods found in northeastern Poland, in the <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Location-of-lakes-in-Ilawa-Lakeland-Landscape-Park_fig1_324176030" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Iława Lakeland</a>. </p>



<p>The Polish pieces already looked Iron Age in style. When researchers compared trace elements and isotope ratios across both finds, the parallels were strong. </p>



<p>That points to related supply routes and shared handling practices rather than a single, isolated shipment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-jewelry-from-iron-age-ingots">Jewelry from Iron Age ingots</h2>



<p>Metal often moved as raw stock. Ingots are the quiet workhorses of ancient trade, easy to stack, count, tax, and remelt. </p>



<p>Communities could turn them into fittings, tools, or ornaments based on local needs. Finds like the Särdal piece, and the Polish rods it resembles, show how materials flowed before they became finished objects.</p>



<p>Artifacts found without helpful context can languish in storage because traditional dating relies on surrounding material. Modern lab work changes that. </p>



<p>Even a single item can reveal origin, recipe, and trade links through these tests. Cross-checks against other finds add weight, turning a one-off discovery into a point on a map.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teamwork-across-borders">Teamwork across borders</h2>



<p>Large comparisons do not happen in isolation. Data has to be shared, and methods aligned, so numbers speak the same language across labs. </p>



<p>“Networking and international collaboration are also important to unveil patterns and data that would remain unknown when one looks exclusively at the local context," Sabatini enthused.</p>



<p>"This work clearly shows the importance of teamwork and data sharing. Without the successful collaboration with our Polish colleagues, we would have never achieved such remarkable results!"</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-this-iron-age-ingot-matters">Why this Iron Age ingot matters</h2>



<p>The route suggested by this work is clear: up the Atlantic margins, into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/ship-tracks-across-the-north-sea/">North Sea</a>, through the narrow straits between Denmark and Sweden, and out across the Baltic. </p>



<p>That network stitched together coasts and communities long before roads could do the job at scale. </p>



<p>The Särdal ingot serves as a marker along that route. It supports a picture of steady movement of raw materials, not just high-status goods.</p>



<p>This find encourages a fresh look at old collections and storerooms. </p>



<p>Many items collected decades ago can yield new information under modern analysis. Re-examining them could tighten timelines, firm up trade links, and correct long-standing labels. </p>



<p>Small, sturdy pieces like this ingot remind us that history often survives in everyday materials built to be used, moved, and remade.</p>

Iron Age hidden treasure found in Sweden, rewriting history of the 1st millennium BC

A heavy, round lump of metal turned up during routine...

<p>A lost Maya city has stepped back into view after three centuries of silence. The site, called Sak-Bahlán, or Land of the White Jaguar, sheltered Indigenous rebels during the 1500s and 1600s.</p>



<p>Researchers combined old letters with modern mapping to find it inside the Lacandón Jungle of southern Mexico. </p>



<p>The result gives shape to a community that outlasted repeated military campaigns and then vanished from official maps.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-the-lost-city-of-sak-bahlan">Finding the lost city of Sak-Bahlán</h2>



<p>The work was led by <a href="https://inah.academia.edu/Josuh%C3%A9Lozada" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Josuhé Lozada Toledo</a>, an archaeologist at the National Institute of Anthropology and History <a href="https://www.inah.gob.mx/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(INAH)</a>. </p>



<p>His team focused on a remote stretch of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, a large humid tropical forest in Mexico and Central America .</p>



<p>Spanish authorities subdued the settlement in 1695, and by 1721 it was abandoned, bringing to a close about 110 years of occupation that had begun after the fall of the earlier capital in 1586.</p>



<p>Archaeologists now point to a location near the border with Guatemala, close to the Jataté and Ixcán rivers, where historical descriptions and fieldwork appear to converge. </p>



<p>The geography of this area matches colonial accounts that described river routes and travel times, strengthening the case that the site corresponds to the long-lost city.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-colonial-records-said">What the colonial records said</h2>



<p>Seventeenth century accounts guided the modern search. A 1695 letter described the city as being located on a plain beside a bend of the Lacantún River, offering one of the main clues to its position.</p>



<p>The same records outlined a four day walk from the site to the river and then a two day canoe trip to the junction with the Pasión River. Those times became the backbone for route modeling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-modern-tools-narrowed-the-search">How modern tools narrowed the search</h2>



<p>The team used <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/what-a-geographic-information-system-gis" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GIS</a> or geographic information systems to build a predictive model that weighed terrain, current and historic waterways, and realistic travel speeds for soldiers and porters. </p>



<p>A project <a href="https://revistas.uaz.edu.mx/index.php/chicomoztoc/article/view/3507/2898" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> by Lozada details how those variables define a probable search ellipse.</p>



<p>Researchers then overlaid that model with satellite basemaps and topographic layers to target walking surveys. </p>



<p>The approach helped concentrate scarce time and resources on the few places that fit both the math and the colonial text.</p>



<p>Preliminary mapping and trenching aim to match architecture and ceramics to the dates in the documents. </p>



<p>Early work has focused on verifying whether the surface remains aligned with a settlement that was still active in the late 1600s.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-team-found-on-site">What the team found on site</h2>



<p>Field seasons logged stone foundations, ceramics, and Spanish era remains, including a small church ruin that fits the Sak-Bahlán’s late colonial chapter. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/student-finds-1100-year-old-medieval-gold-jewel-on-her-first-excavation-in-just-90-minutes/">Excavations</a> and dating tests are now underway near the Jataté and Ixcán rivers to confirm the site’s identity.</p>



<p>“It was the most arduous field trip I've ever had in my life, but in the end, we found the archaeological evidence, right at the spot I had marked,” said Lozada. </p>



<p>The quote underscores how a desk built model held up under real jungle conditions. It also signals that the core hypothesis is passing early checks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-sak-bahlan-matters-today">Why Sak-Bahlán matters today</h2>



<p>Sak-Bahlán served as a refuge for the <a href="https://www.mpm.edu/research-collections/anthropology/online-collections-research/lacandon-collection/history" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lacandon Ch'ol</a>, a Maya group that resisted Spanish attempts to move them into colonial towns. </p>



<p>For more than a century, they maintained their independence deep within the jungle, far from the control of Spanish authorities.</p>



<p>The term Lacandon originally referred to several unconquered lowland groups who shared cultural ties but lived in separate communities. </p>



<p>Over time, the blending of these groups shaped what is recognized today as Lacandon culture, preserving elements of their traditions while also reflecting centuries of adaptation and change.</p>



<p>Archival narratives describe how, after the 1695 occupation, colonial authorities moved many Lacandon Ch'ol to highland <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/permafrost-is-no-longer-permanent-arctic-communities-in-danger/">communities</a> in Guatemala. </p>



<p>Over the next decades they merged into neighboring Maya populations, which helps explain why the original city faded from memory.</p>



<p>It also widens the lens on how resistance worked in daily life. Food storage, water access, craft production, and ritual spaces all become data points for how a community sustained itself while avoiding the road grid of empire.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-science-can-add-next">What the science can add next</h2>



<p>Archaeology can now test the predictive model against buried streets, house compounds, and defensive lines. If the model predicts a route and a causeway shows up in that corridor, confidence in the method rises.</p>



<p>Specialists will also track trade networks through obsidian sources and metal artifacts. Those finds can reveal whether rebels relied on nearby allies or tapped wider exchanges.</p>



<p>Chronology will be refined with radiocarbon and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/etruscan-tomb-sealed-for-2600-years-reveals-more-than-100-intact-artifacts/">ceramic</a> seriation to bracket the start and end of the settlement. Matching those dates to specific entries in colonial logs can lock the site’s identity beyond doubt.</p>



<p>This discovery connects historical memory to measurable ground evidence. It respects testimonies that spoke of a hidden city and shows how a careful read of those texts, paired with modern tools, can surface places that were meant to be forgotten.</p>



<p>The work also turns attention to ordinary people who held their ground for a century. Their city, their foodways, and their roads now have coordinates, not just stories.</p>

After 300 years, ruins are emerging of this rebellious city that Spain tried to erase

A lost Maya city has stepped back into view after...

<p>Feeling lonely and cut off from others does not just sting emotionally. Loneliness changes our internal biology in ways that are linked to heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even early death.</p>



<p>A large study of more than 42,000 adults measured thousands of proteins in blood. The researchers mapped how loneliness and social isolation line up with immune system and metabolic pathways. </p>



<p>The work helps connect the dots between the social experience of loneliness, and concrete risks to our health.</p>



<p>Doctors have warned for years that weak social ties shorten lives. A landmark <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25910392/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meta-analysis</a> found that people who lack social connection have a higher risk of early death, even after accounting for other factors.</p>



<p>Lead author Chun Shen from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>, examined what might sit in the middle of that pathway and leave a fingerprint in blood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-loneliness-and-disease">Studying loneliness and disease</h2>



<p>The team used the <a href="https://www.nature.com/scitable/definition/proteome-297/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proteome</a>, the full set of measurable proteins in blood, to see which signals rise or fall when people report objective social isolation or the subjective feeling of loneliness. </p>



<p>After accounting for age, sex, income, education, smoking, alcohol use, and body mass index, 175 proteins tracked with social isolation and 26 tracked with loneliness, with notable overlap.</p>



<p>To probe cause and effect, the researchers used <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendelian_randomization" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mendelian randomization</a>. This method treats genetic variants as natural experiments to infer whether loneliness itself shifts protein levels. </p>



<p>That analysis pointed to five proteins with levels that appear to be driven by loneliness.</p>



<p>“We know that social isolation and loneliness are linked to poorer health, but we’ve never understood why," explained Shen. </p>



<p>"Our work has highlighted a number of proteins that appear to play a key role in this relationship, with levels of some proteins in particular increasing as a direct consequence of loneliness."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-immunity-and-inflammation">Immunity and inflammation</h2>



<p>Many of the proteins tied to weak social connection were part of immune responses. </p>



<p>Several related to antiviral activity, inflammatory signaling, and the complement system, which is a rapid response arm of immunity.</p>



<p>The study also found that more than half of the proteins linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loneliness-disrupts-college-students-sleep-more-than-screen-time/">isolation</a> or loneliness predicted later risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/">cardiovascular disease</a>, type 2 diabetes, stroke, or death over follow up. Those associations held even after careful adjustment for common confounders.</p>



<p>One protein, adrenomedullin (<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28150464/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ADM</a>), stood out as a consistent mediator between loneliness and disease risk. Higher ADM was tied to greater risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and mortality in the cohort.</p>



<p>There is biological backing for ADM’s role in stress physiology and social signaling. In animal <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19420012/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a>, central adrenomedullin peptides increased activity in oxytocin neurons and raised oxytocin levels in blood.</p>



<p>The study linked higher ADM in blood to smaller volumes in brain regions that help sense internal body signals and shape emotion. That pattern offers a plausible route from a social feeling to a whole-body response.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loneliness-disease-and-the-brain">Loneliness, disease, and the brain</h2>



<p>Higher levels of ADM were linked to smaller size in the insula, a brain area that helps the body sense and process internal signals. </p>



<p>They were also connected to reduced size in the left caudate, which is important for emotion, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/want-to-stay-motivated-focus-on-time-not-money/">motivation</a>, and social behavior.</p>



<p>These associations do not mean neurons are being lost due to loneliness. They do show a clear connection between a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loneliness-harms-health-more-than-alcohol-obesity-or-smoking/">social experience</a>, a circulating protein, and variation in brain structure measured years later.</p>



<p>Another protein identified was <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1508419" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ASGR1</a>, which has been tied to cholesterol levels and heart disease. In people, a genetic change that turns off ASGR1 lowers certain types of cholesterol and cuts the risk of coronary artery disease.</p>



<p>The new work suggests that loneliness may nudge ASGR1 levels higher, adding a layer of social biology on top of known genetic effects. </p>



<p>That is an intriguing connection to how arteries harden and why some people move toward insulin resistance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-numbers-really-say">What the numbers really say</h2>



<p>The study pointed to five proteins with levels that seemed to be directly affected by loneliness and were also tied to health problems. These proteins were ADM, ASGR1, GFRA1, FABP4, and TNFRSF10A.</p>



<p>About nine in ten of the proteins tied to poor social connection were also associated with higher mortality risk in the dataset. More than half were tied to later cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, or stroke.</p>



<p>Genetic approaches such as Mendelian randomization strengthen causal arguments, but they are not perfect. Pleiotropy, where one genetic variant affects multiple traits, can blur the view.</p>



<p>Even so, the convergence of genetic instruments, longitudinal health records, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/100-year-old-people-all-share-these-crucial-blood-biomarkers-that-short-lived-people-dont-have/">blood biomarkers</a>, and brain imaging adds weight.</p>



<p>The story that emerges is that persistent loneliness can change the mix of proteins that steer inflammation, metabolism, and stress. Those changes tack with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poverty-linked-loneliness-causes-real-physical-and-emotional-pain/">poorer outcomes</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loneliness-as-a-global-pandemic">Loneliness as a global pandemic</h2>



<p>Loneliness is not just a private struggle. The World Health Organization (<a href="https://www.who.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHO</a>) has flagged social connection as a public health priority. They created a three-year Commission to push action, as noted in an official <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/15-11-2023-who-launches-commission-to-foster-social-connection" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WHO news item</a>.</p>



<p>That framing matters because the biology uncovered here points to preventable risk. Social connection is not a pill. It is a lever that can reduce the burden of cardiovascular and metabolic disease in populations.</p>



<p>Clinicians already track <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/c-reactive-protein-test/about/pac-20385228" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">C-reactive protein</a> and other biomarkers of inflammation when they assess metabolic and cardiovascular risk. It will take more work before proteins such as ADM or ASGR1 become clinical targets or routine tests.</p>



<p>Even now, it is reasonable to treat persistent loneliness like a modifiable risk factor. As such, it deserves the same systematic attention as blood pressure or cholesterol. Health systems can screen for it, and community connections can lower it.</p>

Study directly links loneliness to serious health issues and diseases, making it a global pandemic

Feeling lonely and cut off from others does not just...

<p>Astronomers examining data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) say they’ve spotted a contender for the most distant galaxy ever seen, Capotauro. </p>



<p>The galaxy looks like nothing more than a tiny smudge. Yet its light appears to have set out when the universe was only about 90 million years old.</p>



<p>The team has nicknamed the object “Capotauro,” but they’re the first to admit it might turn out to be something else entirely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-capotauro-surprises-scientists">Capotauro surprises scientists</h2>



<p>Distance in cosmology is measured by redshift: as the universe expands, light from faraway objects is stretched to longer, redder wavelengths.</p>



<p>The current record holder, a distant galaxy called MoM-z14, has a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-bright-objects-found-in-space-may-be-early-galaxies-very-high-redshift/">redshift</a> of 14.4. That means we see it as it was roughly 280 million years after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-nothing-to-everything-what-happened-before-the-big-bang/">Big Bang</a>.</p>



<p>Capotauro, by contrast, shows an eyebrow-raising photometric redshift of 32. That value, if confirmed, would push the first known galaxies back by nearly 200 million years.</p>



<p>“Capotauro could be the farthest galaxy ever seen,” said Giovanni Gandolfi of the <a href="https://www.unipd.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Padua</a>, adding that it would lie at a timescale that is compatible with the first stars and black holes to form in the universe.</p>



<p>The candidate popped out of a deep <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a> survey as a faint blip. It vanishes in filters sensitive to bluer light, which has been absorbed or redshifted away. The object appears only in the reddest infrared bands, the classic signature of an extremely distant source.</p>



<p>By comparing how bright it looks through different JWST filters, the team estimated its redshift without a spectrum - a common first step for spotting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-planets-formed-in-the-harsh-early-universe/">early universe</a> targets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-too-bright-for-its-own-good"><a></a>Too bright for its own good</h2>



<p>Capotauro looks very bright for something that young. Its apparent luminosity would imply a mass on the order of a billion suns - comparable to galaxies seen hundreds of millions of years later. That scale is hard to square with theory.</p>



<p>Building a system that big, that fast, would require turning almost all available gas into stars with dazzling efficiency.</p>



<p>“To achieve such a mass, the efficiency at which the galaxy turned gas into stars would have to be close to 100 percent,” said Nicha Leethochawalit of the <a href="https://www.narit.or.th/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand</a>. “It means no stars can explode.”</p>



<p>In modern models, feedback from stellar winds and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-travels-back-in-time-to-better-understand-supernovae-science/">supernovae</a> quickly slows star formation, keeping the efficiency closer to 10–20 percent. “I think there’s something wrong,” she said.</p>



<p>There are, however, other possibilities. If the source is truly at z~32, it might be an ultra-young galaxy caught in the act of assembling. </p>



<p>Alternatively, it could be a more unusual object such as a “black hole star” - a hypothesized behemoth in which a nascent black hole grows inside a massive, puffy envelope of gas. Either way, it would force a rethink of how fast structure took shape in the infant universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-cosmic-impostor">A cosmic impostor?</h2>



<p>The simplest explanation may be much closer to home. Without a definitive spectrum, some foreground impostors can masquerade as extreme redshift galaxies in imaging alone.</p>



<p>Gandolfi and colleagues note Capotauro could instead be a very cold <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brown-dwarfs-detected-outside-the-milky-way-for-the-first-time/">brown dwarf</a> - a failed star - or even a rogue planet within our own galaxy drifting through JWST’s field of view. Its colors, at low temperatures, can mimic the dropout pattern expected for a distant galaxy.</p>



<p>That wouldn’t make the discovery dull. By their estimates, such an object would be unusually remote for a substellar wanderer - perhaps up to 6,000 light-years away - and so cool it would sit near room temperature. “It could be one of the first substellar objects ever formed in our galaxy,” Gandolfi said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spectrum-will-reveal-the-truth">Spectrum will reveal the truth</h2>



<p>Sorting these scenarios demands follow-up. The next step is spectroscopy with JWST: splitting Capotauro’s light into its component wavelengths to look for telltale features.</p>



<p>If the source is a genuine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-bright-objects-found-in-space-may-be-early-galaxies-very-high-redshift/">high-redshift</a> galaxy, astronomers would expect a sharp cutoff. That cutoff comes from intergalactic hydrogen absorbing light bluer than the Lyman-alpha line.</p>



<p>If it’s instead a nearby brown dwarf, molecular absorption bands from water, methane, or ammonia should reveal its identity.</p>



<p>Leethochawalit favors caution -&nbsp; “If it’s a galaxy with a redshift of 32, many things that we have thought so far would be wrong,” she said - but agrees the object is worth precious telescope time. Even a null result would tighten our understanding of the kinds of contaminants that sneak into early-universe surveys.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-galaxy-or-impostor-it-matters">Galaxy or impostor, it matters</h2>



<p>If astronomers confirm Capotauro at z~32, it will vault ahead of MoM-z14 and the current crop of JWST-era candidates, recasting the timeline for how quickly distant galaxies assembled.</p>



<p>Models would need to explain billions of solar-mass systems emerging within the universe’s first 100 million years. Otherwise, they must invoke different physics - from unusually calm star formation to rapid black hole growth shaping a galaxy’s light.</p>



<p>If it’s a nearby interloper, that outcome still matters. It would expand the census of cold, free-floating objects in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gaia-reveals-the-hidden-architecture-of-the-milky-way/">Milky Way</a> and help astronomers refine their methods for separating true cosmic-dawn targets from stellar look-alikes. </p>



<p>This step is critical as JWST and future observatories push deeper into the universe’s earliest chapters.</p>

Why the most distant galaxy ever seen might actually be an impostor

<p>Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 made a landing near Mons Latreille in Mare Crisium on the Moon’s near side, and teams expect about one lunar day of surface operations.</p>



<p>“This incredible achievement demonstrates how NASA and American companies are leading the way in space exploration for the benefit of all,” said NASA's acting Administrator Janet Petro.</p>



<p>This marks the second commercial soft landing on the Moon,after Intuitive Machines’ <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-article/odysseus-lands-on-the-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Odysseus</a> reached the surface in 2024. The latest mission carries instruments that support NASA’s Artemis plans.</p>



<p>Nicky Fox, NASA's associate administrator for science, emphasized the mission’s value to long-term exploration, and the growing role of private partners.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-blue-ghost-1-matters">Why Blue Ghost 1 matters</h2>



<p>NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/commercial-lunar-payload-services/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CLPS</a>) model buys deliveries instead of owning every spacecraft. This speeds up testing and lowers cost. </p>



<p>The agency uses competitive task orders and indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contracts with a combined ceiling of $2.6 billion through November 2028.</p>



<p>That approach spreads risk across multiple flights, accepts that some attempts will stumble, and pushes companies to iterate fast. It also gets critical hardware onto the Moon sooner so designers can fix what breaks and scale what works.</p>



<p>For students and young engineers, this creates a clear pipeline from classroom ideas to working hardware on another world. It is a practical way to build a sustainable presence instead of one-off triumphs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-blue-ghost-is-carrying">What Blue Ghost is carrying</h2>



<p>Blue Ghost delivered ten NASA <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/missions/artemis/clps/ten-nasa-science-tech-instruments-flying-to-moon-on-firefly-lander/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">payloads</a> aimed at navigation, heat flow, dust, drilling, and plume imaging. </p>



<p>They include a subsurface drill that can reach down about 10 feet (3 meters), a sampler for lunar soil, a landing plume camera suite, a radiation tolerant computer, a magnetotelluric sounder, and a Global Navigation Satellite System (<a href="https://www.gps.gov/systems/gnss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GNSS</a>) receiver.</p>



<p>The Moon’s surface is covered with <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/05_1_snoble_thelunarregolith.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regolith</a>, a mix of rock fragments and fine dust that can cling to everything and grind moving parts. Learning how it flows, heats, and sticks will shape future rover wheels, seals, and spacesuits.</p>



<p>A magnetotelluric sounder listens to natural electromagnetic fields to infer the electrical properties beneath the ground. </p>



<p>Those data help scientists estimate composition and temperature at depth without explosives or seismometers.</p>



<p>Electronics also face harsh radiation, especially when missions cross the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/biological-physical/stories/van-allen-belts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Van Allen belts</a> on the way out and back. Running fault-tolerant computers on the surface helps engineers design systems that can survive months instead of hours.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-launch-to-moon-landing">From launch to Moon landing</h2>



<p>After lift-off from Florida in mid-January, mission control guided the craft through cruise, approach, and a powered descent to Mare Crisium. </p>



<p>The lander’s legs settled upright and stable, which simplifies surface operations and protects instruments.</p>



<p>Landing near an ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-eruption-on-jupiters-moon-io-covers-area-larger-than-lake-superior-juno-mission/">volcanic</a> vent gives scientists a window into thermal history and crustal chemistry. That spot also offers good lighting for cameras that watch dust and surface changes during dawn and dusk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blue-ghost-1-mission-parameters">Blue Ghost 1 mission parameters</h2>



<p>Teams plan to record a lunar sunset and watch how dust behaves in low angle sunlight. That twilight period has long raised questions about near surface electric fields and how they loft fine grains off the ground.</p>



<p>A classic <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2005RG000184" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> of lunar dust physics points to charged particles that can rise and fall close to the surface, especially near the terminator where lighting changes quickly. Fresh images and measurements from Blue Ghost can test those ideas at a new site.</p>



<p>The drill will probe the thermal gradient down several feet to estimate heat flow from the interior. Those numbers help refine models of crust thickness, volcanic activity in Mare Crisium, and how fast the Moon has cooled.</p>



<p>A sampler will try out a method that uses gas to collect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/this-weekends-corn-moon-marks-farewell-to-summer/">lunar</a> soil, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-device-turns-moon-dirt-into-water-and-oxygen-for-lunar-bases/">regolith</a>. This approach could make future missions simpler and less energy-hungry because it avoids relying on heavy robotic arms with lots of moving parts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-landing-matters-back-on-earth">Why the landing matters back on Earth</h2>



<p>Navigation is getting an upgrade. The Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (<a href="https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/20220002074/downloads/LuGRE_ION-ITM_2022_Draft8_Submitted_ConferenceProceedings.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LuGRE</a>) showed that weak <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/space-communications-navigation-program/nasa-successfully-acquires-gps-signals-on-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signals</a> from GPS and Galileo can be acquired and tracked on the Moon.</p>



<p>If future landers can use GNSS for position, velocity, and time at the Moon, they will rely less on Earth-based tracking. That frees up ground networks and lets small missions navigate more independently.</p>



<p>Dust research also loops back to Earth. The same tools used to understand charged <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-plans-to-build-a-moon-base-using-3d-printing-and-robots/">lunar</a> grains inform static control in clean rooms and the design of materials that resist wear in dusty places.</p>



<p>Finally, public private work like CLPS grows a supply chain that can build faster and smarter. As providers get repeat flights, they standardize hardware and shorten timelines, which reduces the cost for science and technology riders.</p>

<p>When people talk about iridescence, they usually think of butterflies, hummingbirds, or beetles. These animals shimmer when light hits them, creating colors that shift with each angle. </p>



<p>Mammals, by contrast, appear duller and more uniform. Their coats are typically brown, black, or grey, designed for camouflage and survival.</p>



<p>But recent research from <a href="https://www.ugent.be/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ghent University</a> shows this picture is incomplete. Some mammals carry shimmering fur that rivals the beauty of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammals-tried-different-ways-to-move-before-walking-upright/">birds</a> and insects. </p>



<p>The discovery challenges long-standing assumptions and opens new questions about how common these hidden colors really are.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-surprising-discovery">A surprising discovery</h2>



<p>The story began in a museum, not in the wild. A researcher studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammal-evolution-kicked-off-with-daring-experiments/">mammal</a> specimens noticed an odd blue glint on the fur of a tropical vlei rat. That moment set everything in motion. Until then, golden moles were the only mammals widely recognized as iridescent. </p>



<p>These small African burrowers are known for their metallic, tinsel-like hairs. But the rat’s fur suggested something more was happening. If one overlooked species shimmered, perhaps others did too.</p>



<p>The observation was more than a curiosity. It challenged a simple claim in biology: that iridescence belonged almost entirely to creatures with scales or feathers. Mammals, it seemed, were the exception.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-the-past">Searching the past</h2>



<p>Instead of stopping at the rat, the researcher dug deeper. Old scientific reports contained scattered references to shiny fur in other mammals, some dating back to the late 1800s. </p>



<p>These notes were brief and often dismissed, treated as oddities rather than serious findings. For over a century, no one had followed them up. The new discovery gave reason to revisit those forgotten records.</p>



<p>By combining modern tools with these old clues, scientists could finally test whether mammals truly showed iridescence beyond golden moles. Museum collections, filled with preserved animals from around the world, provided the perfect opportunity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-iridescence-in-fur">Detecting iridescence in fur</h2>



<p>The team examined specimens linked to historic mentions of iridescence. They also included related species to broaden the search. Using microscopes, they shone light at different angles across the hairs and measured how it reflected. </p>



<p>This simple test revealed the truth. Golden moles were not unique. Fourteen additional mammal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-species-some-live-days-others-for-centuries-maximum-lifespan-potential-mlsp/">species</a> displayed iridescent coats. Ten were rodents. </p>



<p>Another was the giant otter shrew, a semiaquatic predator unrelated to either otters or shrews despite its name. For six of these animals, this was the first time iridescence had been scientifically recorded.</p>



<p>The discovery turned a narrow claim into a broader pattern. Iridescence in mammals, once thought to be nearly absent, now appeared in multiple groups.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-iridescent-fur-works">How iridescent fur works</h2>



<p>Understanding why the fur glowed required a closer look. Under high-powered microscopes, the hairs showed a special design. Normal mammal hairs are rough and uneven, made up of layers that scatter light. In contrast, iridescent hairs were smooth and compressed into parallel sheets.</p>



<p>Light striking these layers bent slightly at each surface. As the layers stacked, they bent light in multiple directions, creating interference patterns. The result was a rainbow shimmer, its colors changing as the viewing angle shifted. </p>



<p>The process resembled the one behind butterfly wings or beetle shells, though mammals achieved it through fur instead of scales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-reasons-for-iridescence">Possible reasons for iridescence</h2>



<p>Why would <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammals-ground-dwellers-survived-the-asteroid-impact-that-killed-the-dinosaurs/">mammals</a> develop such unusual hair? The answer is still uncertain. Many iridescent species are burrowers or swimmers. For animals living underground or in water, smooth hair could reduce dirt buildup or resist moisture. In that case, the shine would be a by-product, not an adaptation in itself.</p>



<p>Yet another explanation remains on the table. In birds, iridescence often serves as a communication tool, helping attract mates or signal dominance. </p>



<p>Mammals could use it the same way. If so, the shimmer would not be an accident but an important social feature. At present, scientists cannot say for sure. Both ideas remain possible, and both need further testing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-iridescent-species-found">More iridescent species found</h2>



<p>Evidence suggests the list of iridescent mammals is far from complete. In 2024, scientists described a new shrew from Indonesia with fur that appeared somewhat shiny. </p>



<p>With around 2,500 rodent species worldwide, and only a small portion studied under microscopes, the odds of finding more iridescent examples are high.</p>



<p>Each discovery adds weight to the idea that iridescence in mammals is not a rare exception. Instead, it may be a common but overlooked trait, hidden until light strikes at the right angle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biology-remains-full-of-surprises">Biology remains full of surprises </h2>



<p>The findings highlight the importance of close observation. For decades, scientists assumed mammal fur was plain because it usually looks that way under normal conditions. But assumptions can blind research. </p>



<p>Only when someone noticed a small flash of color did the story begin to change. Museum collections, often viewed as archives of the past, proved vital in rewriting the present understanding of mammal biology.</p>



<p>This work also shows how biology remains full of surprises. Even groups as familiar as rodents can carry traits we barely recognize. What seems ordinary may hold complexity beneath the surface.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>Future studies will likely explore how iridescence affects animal behavior. Does it influence mating or social interactions? Does it offer camouflage under certain light conditions? Or is it simply a side effect of hair built for other environments? </p>



<p>Answering these questions will take fieldwork as well as lab analysis. The possibility of discovering many more iridescent mammals is exciting. Every new case adds to our picture of how structural colors evolve. </p>



<p>The research also reshapes our understanding of what mammals can look like. Far from being drab, some may shimmer like jewels under the right conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iridescent-beauty-in-mammals">Iridescent beauty in mammals</h2>



<p>The discovery of iridescent fur in mammals changes a basic story about animal colors. It shows that beauty and complexity are not limited to insects, birds, or reptiles. </p>



<p>Mammals, too, can hide light-bending structures in their coats. These shimmering layers may serve survival, communication, or both.</p>



<p>What began with a single flash of blue on a museum specimen has opened a new chapter in biology. It proves once again that even in well-studied groups, nature still keeps secrets. Sometimes all it takes is the right angle of light to reveal them.</p>

Not just birds and beetles: Iridescence found in unexpected animals

<p>A new paper documents a 9,000-year-old quartz tool workshop and a fireplace at the Ravin Blanc X (RBX-1) site in eastern Senegal. The site captures a brief moment in the work of Later Stone Age (LSA) hunter-gatherers. The evidence is preserved, like a time capsule, beneath younger deposits.</p>



<p>Archaeologists, led by Charlotte Pruvost from the <a href="https://arcan.unige.ch/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ARCAN Laboratory</a> of the University of Geneva, found an exceptionally intact layer with toolmaking debris, a shallow hearth, and sediments that still hold microscopic plant and wood traces. </p>



<p>The excavated area is small, about 269 square feet (25 square meters), yet rich enough to say something meaningful about people who lived at the end of the last big climate swing into the Early Holocene.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-quartz-tool-site-matters">Why the quartz tool site matters</h2>



<p>West Africa is huge, roughly 2.3 million square miles (6 million square kilometers), yet stratified prehistoric sites are scarce and often disturbed. </p>



<p>RBX-1 gives researchers a clean, well dated context from the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0047248421000063" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Later Stone Age</a>, a period when small, efficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">tools</a> and composite hunting gear became the norm.</p>



<p>“The discovery of RBX-1 enhances our understanding of the LSA in West Africa by providing a rare, well-dated stratigraphic context,” wrote Pruvost. </p>



<p>The team reports a tight cluster of activity dated to the early part of the Holocene, the warm interval that followed the Pleistocene.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-team-found">What the team found</h2>



<p>The layer includes a quartz knapping area, about 31 inches (79 centimeters) across, where nearly 1,200 of the almost 1,500 lithic artifacts were concentrated. </p>



<p>A circular hearth nearby is about 26 inches (66 centimeters) wide, set into older sediments and ringed by reddened soil and ash.</p>



<p>No finished quartz tools were left behind, which fits a classic workshop signature. People made blanks here, selected the good ones, and carried them away for use.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-scientists-decoded-the-layer">How scientists decoded the layer</h2>



<p>Charcoal from the hearth yielded early Holocene ages using radiocarbon dating. This method measures the decay of carbon isotopes in once living material. The dates from different parts of the hearth agree, which supports a short, single episode of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-tools-ever-made-on-earth-hominins-3-million-years-ago-cradle-of-humankind/">activity</a>.</p>



<p>Specialists also used anthracology to identify the firewood as <a href="https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Detarium+senegalense" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Detarium</em></a> species, trees that are common in Sudanian savannas. </p>



<p>To cross check the environment, the team studied <a href="https://academic.oup.com/aob/article/124/2/189/5537002" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoliths</a>, tiny silica bodies that plants leave in soils. Results point to an open savanna with grasses and scattered trees, wetter than the glacial period that came before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-quartz-tools-reveal">What quartz tools reveal</h2>



<p>Two distinct blank types were produced with care. One set is broad, thick, and rectilinear, with straight, parallel edges. </p>



<p>The other set is elongated, narrow, and thin, often with an oblique tip suitable for mounting as standardized armatures.</p>



<p>“The strong investment in blank standardization from the extraction stage significantly reduced the need for subsequent retouching, which was rarely observed in the RBX-1 lithic assemblage,” wrote Pruvost. </p>



<p>Standardization signals skill, planning, and a desire for uniform parts that fit composite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-hominins-carried-materials-miles-with-the-intent-to-make-stone-tools/">weapons</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-west-africa-in-a-changing-climate">West Africa in a changing climate</h2>



<p>The workshop sits at the opening of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_humid_period" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">African Humid Period</a>, when monsoon rains pushed north and savannas expanded. </p>



<p>Climatic <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-01454-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> show that these wet conditions fluctuated across northern Africa during the Holocene, reshaping water, vegetation, and human mobility.</p>



<p>Phytoliths and charcoal at RBX-1 agree with that broader picture. People were working in a grass-rich savanna with available wood and stable surfaces that protected small flakes from being washed away.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-comparisons-across-the-region">Comparisons across the region</h2>



<p>RBX-1 is not alone, and the comparisons matter. At Fatandi V in the same valley, researchers <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0243129" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> stratified LSA layers with systematic bladelet production and microliths. </p>



<p>Fatandi V shows how chert was worked in short sequences that nonetheless aimed at consistent blanks.</p>



<p>Farther up the sequence, two Final Pleistocene sites, Toumboura I and Ravin de Sansandé, yielded microlithic industries <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10977785/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dated</a> between about 19,000 and 12,000 years ago. </p>



<p>Those assemblages emphasize small geometric pieces made from locally available stones like chert and quartz.</p>



<p>Ceramics appear early in the region, but not yet at RBX-1. <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/antiquity/article/emergence-of-pottery-in-africa-during-the-tenth-millennium-cal-bc-new-evidence-from-ounjougou-mali/EC383CF3E1B961102319433214C6E034" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evidence</a> from Ounjougou in Mali shows pottery before 9400 BC, tied to wetter conditions and new subsistence choices. </p>



<p>That timeline helps frame RBX-1 as a late aceramic LSA snapshot, even though pottery existed elsewhere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quartz-tool-skills-and-choices">Quartz tool skills and choices</h2>



<p>The quartz at RBX-1 is unusually homogeneous, likely selected from nearby veins for quality. Cores were managed to keep convexities stable, so makers could pull off straight-edged, repeatable blanks with minimal waste.</p>



<p>Many flakes are small and angular, which is typical for quartz. The best products, however, hit narrow windows of geometry and thickness. That degree of control is hard to fake and shows learned technique passed within a group.</p>



<p>Everything points to a short visit focused on production. There are no postholes, bones, or piles of mixed trash, just the hearth, the debris ring, and the blanks that did not make the cut.</p>



<p>The rest of the tool kit likely traveled to where game was hunted or where tasks like hafting and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-over-1-million-years-old-were-made-by-an-unknown-human-ancestor/">maintenance</a> took place. In other words, RBX-1 records one job in a seasonal round, not the whole camp.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regional-links-with-quartz-tools">Regional links with quartz tools</h2>



<p>The team notes links between RBX-1 and sites across the Sahelo-Sudanian <a href="https://www.wcs.org/our-work/regions/sudano-sahel" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">belt</a>, where open savanna, rivers, and seasonal movement shaped technology. </p>



<p>Comparisons suggest shared habits in how small cores were prepared and how interchangeable parts were produced.</p>



<p>That does not mean everything looked the same. Forest zone sites farther south often show less standardization and different choices, which could reflect contrasting environments and cultural traditions.</p>



<p>Archaeology in West Africa has to work with rare, fragile layers. When one survives with a hearth, microdebris, and intact plant traces, it can sharpen timelines and test ideas about climate, mobility, and technology.</p>



<p>RBX-1 gives students of prehistory something that is usually hard to find in this region. It is a clean slice of activity, anchored in time and space, and tied into a growing regional map of people and practices.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

Wasps shine a light on 'dark biodiversity' in rainforests

<p>More than 85 climate scientists filed a detailed rebuttal to a Department of Energy (DOE) report that downplays climate risks. The response argues the document misrepresents research and inflates uncertainty in ways that could mislead policy.</p>



<p>The stakes are high because the Environmental Protection Agency (<a href="https://www.epa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPA</a>) is weighing a rollback of the 2009 endangerment finding and has referenced the DOE <a href="https://sites.google.com/tamu.edu/doeresponse/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>. If finalized, that move could reshape rules for vehicles, power plants, and oil and gas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-report-disputed">Climate report disputed</h2>



<p>DOE released its <a href="https://www.energy.gov/sites/default/files/2025-07/DOE_Critical_Review_of_Impacts_of_GHG_Emissions_on_the_US_Climate_July_2025.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, written by five authors known for contrarian views. The agency opened a public comment period and framed the document as a synthesis for decision makers.</p>



<p>Days later, EPA issued a <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-releases-proposal-rescind-obama-era-endangerment-finding-regulations-paved-way" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proposal</a> to rescind the endangerment finding, and cited the DOE study as part of its justification. That connection turned a technical dispute into a live regulatory fight.</p>



<p>Led by <a href="https://artsci.tamu.edu/atmos-science/contact/profiles/andrew-dessler.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrew Dessler</a> of Texas A&amp;M University, the reviewers set out to provide a public, point by point critique. They aimed to show where claims diverge from the broader peer reviewed literature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-rebuttal-came-together">How the rebuttal came together</h2>



<p>The reviewer group consisted of more than 85 experts and produced a public review exceeding 400 pages. </p>



<p>They coordinated quickly to prevent errors from hardening into official guidance. They compared each disputed claim with the underlying papers and flagged omissions or misreadings. </p>



<p>"This report makes a mockery of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-will-climate-change-hit-hardest-global-index-reveals-vulnerability/">science</a>," stated Dessler. The submitted document also challenges the report’s portrayal of benefits from carbon dioxide and its treatment of extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protecting-forests-helps-birds-and-humans-in-many-ways/">weather</a>.</p>



<p>The authors call out selective citation, heavy emphasis on uncertainty, and errors in statistics. They argue that several sections omit recent results on sea level rise and heat extremes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experts-review-climate-report">Experts review climate report</h2>



<p>The American Meteorological Society (<a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMS</a>) issued a formal <a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/about-ams/ams-statements/statements-of-the-ams-in-force/the-practice-and-assessment-of-science-five-foundational-flaws-in-the-department-of-energys-2025-climate-report/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a> identifying five foundational flaws in the DOE report. The society said a small, non representative author group cannot credibly assess the breadth of evidence.</p>



<p>"Each of these flaws, alone, places the report at odds with scientific principles and practices," said the AMS. The statement points to cherry picking and extrapolations that do not follow from comprehensive consideration of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-wins-in-2025-came-from-unexpected-places/">science</a>.</p>



<p>Major assessments, like the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IPCC</a> and the <a href="https://toolkit.climate.gov/NCA5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Climate Assessment</a>, synthesize hundreds of studies across disciplines. That process builds consensus by weighing all the evidence, not a narrow slice of it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-record-on-sea-level-and-risk">Record on sea level and risk</h2>



<p>Sea level along the U.S. coast is projected to rise about 10 to 12 inches by 2050, according to a 2022 NOAA <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/us-coastline-to-see-up-to-foot-of-sea-level-rise-by-2050" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>. </p>



<p>That amount would roughly match the increase of the prior century and would raise the frequency of damaging coastal floods.</p>



<p>These projections rest on tide gauges, satellite measurements, and climate models, plus physics based understanding of melting land ice. </p>



<p>They also account for regional differences caused by land motion and ocean circulation.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-not-adapting-fast-enough-to-climate-change/">Communities</a> will face higher baseline water levels that make storms more destructive. Ports, bases, and neighborhoods will need plans that fit this trajectory, not assumptions that minimize it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-track-record-of-climate-models">Track record of climate models</h2>



<p>A 2020 peer reviewed <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2019GL085378" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> compared decades of historical model projections with observed global temperatures. It found the models were generally accurate once evaluated against the emissions that actually occurred.</p>



<p>That result speaks directly to claims that models exaggerate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-is-just-three-years-away-from-dangerous-carbon-milestone/">warming</a>. While uncertainties remain about regional details, the physics behind greenhouse gas warming has performed well in retrospective tests.</p>



<p>Confidence in the big picture rests on measurements and skill tests, not on selective charts. When models are checked against reality, they give policymakers usable signals about risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-report-shapes-policy">Climate report shapes policy</h2>



<p>EPA’s move puts the DOE document into the legal record, where it could influence standards for vehicles, power plants, and industrial sources. </p>



<p>Public comments, independent reviews, and court scrutiny will determine how much weight it carries.</p>



<p>For people outside Washington, the practical question is whether rules align with what the evidence shows. Health and infrastructure decisions depend on accurate readings of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wealthy-elite-responsible-for-majority-of-global-climate-warming/">heat</a>, rainfall, and sea level rise trends.</p>



<p>Scientists are not asking for certainty, only for decisions rooted in well established measurements and validated methods. Studies that test past <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-lagging-centuries-behind-in-climate-adaptation/">projections</a> against outcomes help keep those decisions on solid ground.</p>

Over 85 environmental scientists claim the US government's new climate report is 'misleading'

<p>Polar ice is rapidly vanishing in both Antarctica and the South Pole, and the world keeps circling back to the same question: Can we use technology to stop it? </p>



<p>A new review takes a hard look at five of the boldest proposals for slowing polar melt - and comes back with a clear answer: not yet, and maybe not ever.</p>



<p>The stakes are rising fast. In 2025, Arctic sea ice hit its lowest winter maximum on record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (<a href="https://nsidc.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSIDC</a>). </p>



<p>That trend highlights why people keep dreaming up big fixes - and why scientists are now asking tough questions about whether those fixes could actually work.</p>



<p>Led by Professor Martin Siegert of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, the team evaluated the five ideas against six yardsticks: effectiveness, feasibility, scale and timing, environmental risk, cost, and governance. </p>



<p>Their conclusion is sobering - especially for the Arctic and Antarctic, where even small missteps can cascade into major problems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-ideas-bigger-costs">Big ideas, bigger costs</h2>



<p>The five ideas are simple to list and hard to pull off. They include <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-small-aerosols-influence-cloud-formation/">stratospheric aerosol</a> injection, which means spraying reflective particles high in the atmosphere, and seabed curtains to block warm currents from ice shelves.</p>



<p>Other ideas are sea ice management by boosting albedo with beads or by thickening ice, basal water removal under glaciers, and ocean iron fertilization (OIF) to stimulate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-at-risk-global-warming-threatens-the-oceans-lifeline/">plankton</a> that carry carbon to the depth.</p>



<p>Cost alone should make readers pause. This analysis estimates that an 80-kilometer (about 50-mile) sea curtain would cost roughly 80 billion dollars over ten years. That figure comes before ongoing maintenance and unforeseen impacts are counted.</p>



<p>"Mid-century is approaching, but our time, money, and expertise is split between evidence-backed net zero efforts and speculative geoengineering projects," said Professor Siegert.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aerosols-can-t-save-the-polar-ice">Aerosols can’t save the polar ice</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosol-formation-earths-lower-atmosphere-soas/">Stratospheric aerosol</a> injection sounds straightforward: add particles like sulfur dioxide high in the stratosphere to reflect sunlight.</p>



<p>Over the poles it runs into physics, since winter darkness removes sunlight for months and cold-season circulation flushes aerosols out faster.</p>



<p>Even when the sun is up, snow and ice already reflect a lot of light, which weakens the effect. </p>



<p>The review also flags known risks, including ozone loss, shifts in rainfall, and the chance of rapid warming if injections stop after years of masking greenhouse heating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thicker-ice-plan-falls-short">Thicker ice plan falls short</h2>



<p>One attention-grabbing idea is to scatter tiny hollow glass microspheres over first-year <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abrupt-collapse-of-arctic-sea-ice-may-come-with-little-warning/">sea ice</a> to reflect more light. </p>



<p>A 2022 paper calculated that roughly 360 megatons of beads per year would be needed and found the beads can darken some surfaces enough to accelerate ice loss.</p>



<p>Support for that approach also sagged outside the lab. A 2025 announcement from the Arctic Ice Project said the nonprofit was winding down after ecotoxicology tests raised potential food web risks.</p>



<p>What about thickening sea ice by pumping seawater onto the surface so it freezes? </p>



<p>The review points out a practical wall here too, since it would mean deploying and maintaining huge numbers of devices across drifting, breaking ice in brutal conditions for years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glacier-pumping-hits-hard-wall">Glacier pumping hits hard wall</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glaciers-from-the-rockies-to-the-alps-are-melting-much-faster-than-expected/">Speeding glaciers</a> depend partly on water at the base that reduces friction. Drilling through miles of moving ice and pumping out subglacial water across wide areas are a massive challenge.</p>



<p>Keeping the holes from freezing shut demands power, logistics, and precision that exceed current polar field capacity.</p>



<p>Fertilizing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">Southern Ocean</a> with iron to grow more plankton has been tested many times. A policy brief notes that only one ship experiment - the <a href="https://epic.awi.de/id/eprint/15162/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Iron Fertilization Experiment</a> - saw strong carbon export to more than 9,800 feet, where storage could last centuries. </p>



<p>It also found that nitrous oxide produced during remineralization can offset 5 to more than 40 percent of any carbon gains.</p>



<p>Even if results looked better, governance would still be a hurdle. The London Convention’s 2013 amendment restricts large-scale ocean fertilization to legitimate research, not carbon markets. </p>



<p>The review adds that the <a href="https://www.ats.aq/index_e.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic Treaty System</a> would require strict environmental review for most polar interventions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-realities-of-polar-ice-testing">Harsh realities of polar ice testing</h2>



<p>Polar work windows are short, travel distances are long, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-near-the-north-pole-signals-major-climate-shifts/">storms</a> and sea ice can cancel whole seasons. </p>



<p>That is before counting iceberg hazards, darkness, and the difficulty of powering heavy equipment cleanly without leaving black carbon on the snow.</p>



<p>Scale also defeats many of these ideas. The ocean and ice do not respect neat borders, so diverting warm water from one polar ice shelf can steer it toward another. </p>



<p>Slowing one fast-flowing glacier can also redirect stress or subglacial water and speed up a neighbor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-co2-still-works-best">Cutting CO2 still works best</h2>



<p>The most reliable lever we have is still cutting carbon dioxide quickly. </p>



<p>The review emphasizes that temperatures tend to stabilize within about two decades after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-technology-is-urgently-needed-to-save-the-climate/">net-zero CO2</a>, which slows the drivers of polar ice loss and gives ecosystems and communities a fighting chance.</p>



<p>Protecting polar biodiversity and local livelihoods also means expanding and enforcing strong protected areas. </p>



<p>It also requires improving monitoring and supporting Indigenous knowledge and leadership in the Arctic. These steps reduce harm now without adding new risks to already stressed systems.</p>

<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. <p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Additionally, researchers found that protein production and gene expression begin to fall out of sync as we age. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
