<p>PFAS - short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances - are so common that they’ve earned the nickname “forever chemicals.” They’re in rain jackets, dental floss, and even the sticky side of a bandage. Too often, they’re also in drinking water.</p>



<p>For years, U.S. contamination maps showed clusters of problem spots in places like California, Michigan, and New England. But those dots didn’t necessarily reveal where PFAS actually are - they only marked where testing had happened.</p>



<p>Now, researchers at Northeastern University’s <a href="https://pfasproject.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PFAS Project Lab</a> have redrawn the picture. Their new analysis suggests that while roughly 2,200 sites have confirmed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-that-eat-forever-chemicals-discovered-in-contaminated-soil/">contamination</a>, as many as 80,000 more are likely polluted but untested.</p>



<p>The result is what the team calls the most complete snapshot yet - a tool designed to help regulators and communities figure out where to look next.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-presumptive-pfas-sites-fill-the-map">Presumptive PFAS sites fill the map</h2>



<p>Because PFAS testing in the U.S. is spotty and often driven by state programs or local advocacy, the “known” map has always been incomplete. </p>



<p>To bridge that gap, the team built a model that flags “presumptive” contamination sites based on what those facilities do. If a type of place is well documented as a PFAS emitter, similar facilities elsewhere likely pose the same risk.</p>



<p>The approach flips the script: instead of waiting for sampling to reveal bad news one neighborhood at a time, it directs investigators toward the most probable sources before problems spread further.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-groundwater-reveals-contamination">Groundwater reveals contamination</h2>



<p>When the researchers looked closely at the 2,200 verified sites, the picture was grim. Ninety-four percent of the locations with groundwater data had average PFAS concentrations above accepted regulatory levels.</p>



<p>Kimberly Garrett is the lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow at the PFAS Project Lab.</p>



<p>“We did find that, overall, all of the sites that we knew about had elevated PFAS concentrations that were above health-based guidelines,” said Garrett. "Some were associated with really high values, but they were all associated with unacceptable values.”</p>



<p>That matters for more than just the communities adjacent to those dots. PFAS contamination moves - through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reed-beds-a-sustainable-revolution-in-wastewater-management/">industrial waste</a> streams, municipal wastewater systems, biosolids applied to fields, and rivers that cross county and state lines. Knowing where it likely starts is the key to cutting it off.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foam-linked-to-high-pfas">Foam linked to high PFAS</h2>



<p>To make the presumptive map, the team sorted potential sources into categories. These included airports, military installations, industrial facilities, municipal fire activities, and wastewater treatment plants. They then compared how often and how strongly PFAS turned up.</p>



<p>Three stood out again and again: airports, military sites, and municipal fire activities. The common thread is aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), a firefighting foam historically loaded with PFAS. Foam used in training and emergency response can soak into soil and groundwater or run off into nearby waterways.</p>



<p>“AFFF was consistently connected to the highest average PFAS concentrations,” Garrett said - a pattern researchers and regulators have suspected for years, now mapped at a national scale.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factories-tied-to-pfas-leaks">Factories tied to PFAS leaks</h2>



<p>Beyond firefighting, the lab’s latest updates begin to tease out which industrial operations are most associated with PFAS releases. Metal manufacturing and electronics manufacturing emerged as frequent suspects.</p>



<p>“Metal manufacturers and electronic manufacturers could use a little more scrutiny in that area, especially as we think about making investments in semiconductor manufacturing and things like that,” Garrett said.</p>



<p>The point isn’t to halt innovation; it’s to ensure new industrial growth doesn’t lock in another generation of contamination.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fixing-pfas-starts-upstream">Fixing PFAS starts upstream</h2>



<p>Public conversation around PFAS often zeroes in on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nearly-100-million-americans-exposed-to-contaminated-drinking-water/">drinking water</a> and wastewater utilities - logical endpoints where contamination becomes visible. But those facilities are downstream. </p>



<p>They inherit what industries and other emitters send them. Treating the problem at the end of the pipe is far harder and more expensive than preventing it in the first place.</p>



<p>“Turning off the tap of PFAS starts at the source,” said Garrett. “We can’t discount the industrial contributions to PFAS contamination.”</p>



<p>Phil Brown, the lab’s co-director, frames it as following the waste stream: identify the treatment plant, then look upstream for likely users and manufacturers.</p>



<p>“We can then tell them that they have to cut down their emissions before it gets into our plants,” he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-triage-plan-for-limited-budgets"><a></a>A triage plan for limited budgets</h2>



<p>Testing is costly, and agencies and utilities have finite staff and funds. The new map is designed with that reality in mind. </p>



<p>By highlighting presumptive hotspots, it helps decision-makers prioritize where sampling will have the biggest payoff. It also indicates where interim protections might be warranted. In some cases, this could mean providing alternative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pfas-forever-chemicals-in-tap-water-linked-to-33-percent-increase-in-cancer-rates/">water</a> sources while testing ramps up.</p>



<p>“We know that resources for testing bodies and regulatory bodies and municipal utilities are very limited,” said Garrett.</p>



<p>“So we hope that our tools can serve as a guide for if a municipality or a state has so much money for testing and they say, what would be the most impactful way to use this? We think that this paper can contribute to those decisions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-scattered-dots-to-a-strategy"><a></a>From scattered dots to a strategy</h2>



<p>PFAS are called forever chemicals because their carbon-fluorine bonds don’t readily break down. That persistence has made them useful - in nonstick coatings, waterproof gear, and industrial processes - and a nightmare to clean up once they escape into the environment.</p>



<p>The Northeastern team’s work doesn’t solve PFAS pollution, but it does something essential: it replaces a misleading patchwork of test results with a forward-looking map of risk.</p>



<p>The takeaway is not simply that PFAS sites are widespread; it’s that the problem has a pattern. Airports, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preparing-u-s-military-bases-for-sea-level-rise/">military bases</a>, and firefighting sites are likely hotspots. Certain industries deserve closer scrutiny. And the most efficient path to safer water starts upstream, before PFAS reach the taps.</p>

<p>In a new study, researchers have uncovered the profound impact that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-great-for-mosquitoes/">climate change</a> is expected to have on the world's natural capital by 2100. This research, supported by the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Science Foundation</a>, anticipates a 9% decline in ecosystem services, a measure of the benefits nature provides to humanity.</p>



<p>The concept of "natural capital" encompasses a range of vital services including breathable air, clean water, healthy forests, and biodiversity. These elements are crucial to human well-being, though they are often challenging to quantify in economic terms. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-natural-capital">Studying natural capital</h2>



<p>The study was led by Bernardo Bastien-Olvera, who was a doctoral student at <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis</a> during the research and is now a postdoctoral fellow at <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scripps Institution of Oceanography</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers investigated how the redistribution of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ripple-effects-wildfires-reshape-aquatic-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">terrestrial ecosystems</a> due to climate change will negatively impact natural capital.</p>



<p>The team combined global vegetation models, climate projections, and World Bank data on natural capital values to assess the impact of climate shifts on various countries' ecosystem services, economic production, and natural capital stocks. </p>



<p>The research reveals a stark reality: by the end of the century, climate-induced changes, such as alterations in vegetation, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animal-diversity-is-driven-by-global-precipitation-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall patterns</a>, and increased CO2 levels, are expected to reduce global gross domestic product (GDP) by an average of 1.3%. This economic impact, however, will not be evenly distributed. </p>



<p>The researchers found that the poorest 50% of countries are projected to bear about 90% of the GDP losses, while the wealthiest 10% may experience only a 2% reduction. </p>



<p>This discrepancy highlights the greater dependency of lower-income countries on natural resources for their economic output and the larger proportion of their wealth tied to natural capital.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservative-estimates-nbsp">Conservative estimates&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While comprehensive, the authors acknowledge that their estimates might be conservative, as they primarily focused on land-based systems like forests and grasslands. </p>



<p>The researchers also did not factor in disturbances such as wildfires or insect-driven <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emerging-diseases-threaten-trees-globally-and-the-trend-is-escalating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tree mortality</a>, which could further impact these ecosystems. Future research is planned to address the impacts on marine ecosystems.</p>



<p>Study senior author Frances C. Moore, an associate professor in the <a href="https://desp.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis</a> Department of Environmental Science and Policy, emphasized the importance of integrating the unique values derived from natural systems into climate policies. </p>



<p>“With this study, we’re embedding natural systems and human well-being within an economic framework,” said Professor Moore. “Our economy and well-being depend on these systems, and we should recognize and account for these overlooked damages when we consider the cost of a changing climate.”</p>

<p>Jeffrey Mantz, an NSF program officer, highlighted the significance of this study.</p>



<p>“Thanks to the efforts of this research team, we now know that damage to ecosystems impacts human well-being in ways that are both measurable and wildly disproportionate across populations. The results will be critical to abating economic losses in the coming decades.”</p>

This discovery solves a long-standing scientific mystery, and also holds promise for potential therapeutic strategies in treating humans poisoned with similar compounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alkaloid-compounds-and-poisonous-frogs">Alkaloid compounds and poisonous frogs</h2>



<p>Alkaloid compounds, found in everyday consumables such as coffee, tea, and chocolate, contribute to their delightful flavors. However, these compounds can be harmful in large quantities. In humans, the liver effectively breaks down modest amounts of these alkaloids, ensuring their safe metabolism. </p>



<p>In stark contrast, the tiny poison dart <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poison-frogs-have-distinct-personalities-that-influence-reproduction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frog</a> consumes highly toxic alkaloids in its diet but, rather than breaking them down, uses a unique defense mechanism by accumulating them in its skin as protection against predators.</p>



<p>Lead author Aurora Alvarez-Buylla is a PhD student in the Biology Department at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a> in California. She explains the aim of their study, saying, "It has long been a mystery how poison dart frogs can transport <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-secret-that-protects-poisonous-animals-from-themselves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">highly toxic alkaloids</a> around their bodies without poisoning themselves." </p>



<p>To investigate this phenomenon, the research team focused on identifying proteins that could safely bind and transport alkaloids in the blood of these remarkable amphibians.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-molecular-fishing-hook">The molecular fishing hook</h2>



<p>To unravel the secrets of the poison dart <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poison-dart-frogs-mental-map/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frog</a>, Alvarez-Buylla and her colleagues designed a biochemical 'molecular fishing hook' resembling the poison frog's alkaloid. By using this decoy, they successfully attracted and bound proteins present in blood samples taken from the Diablito poison frog. </p>



<p>This alkaloid-like compound was bioengineered to emit a fluorescent glow under specific light conditions, enabling the team to visually observe the proteins binding to it.</p>



<p>To gain insight into the interaction between proteins and alkaloids, the researchers isolated and studied each protein's behavior in the presence of these toxic compounds. Astonishingly, they discovered that a specific protein, known as alkaloid binding globulin (ABG), acts as a 'toxin sponge,' effectively collecting alkaloids. </p>



<p>Furthermore, they meticulously mapped out the precise binding mechanism of ABG by systematically testing different segments of the protein.</p>

<p>Alvarez-Buylla explains the profound implications of their findings, saying, "The way that ABG binds alkaloids has similarities to the way proteins that transport hormones in human blood bind their targets. This discovery may suggest that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poison-frogs-flourish-competitors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frog's</a> hormone-handling proteins have evolved the ability to manage alkaloid toxins." </p>



<p>This intriguing parallel raises the possibility of bioengineering human proteins that can effectively 'sponge up' toxins, offering a potentially groundbreaking approach to treat certain types of poisonings.</p>



<p>Senior author Lauren O'Connell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology and a member of the prestigious <a href="https://neuroscience.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute</a> at Stanford University, highlights the significance of this research. </p>

<p>In a recent study conducted in China's Wolong Nature Reserve, researchers have made a remarkable discovery about the social lives of pandas. The experts found that <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/why-are-pandas-endangered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandas</a>, traditionally viewed as solitary creatures, actually maintain social networks much like humans do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-panda-social-lives">Studying panda social lives</h2>



<p>The study was led by Thomas Connor for his PhD at <a href="https://msu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michigan State University</a>’s Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability (MSU-CSIS).</p>



<p>Connor spent months in the forest looking for signs of pandas. His work was built on previous observations by MSU-CSIS scientists who suspected that pandas are not the loners that everyone thinks they are. </p>



<p>The research has produced surprising new details about a unique method of communication used by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-pandas-have-the-perfect-camouflage-for-their-natural-habitat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandas</a> – scent marking on trees.</p>



<p>“Once you’ve gotten an eye for it, you can see on ridge tops and different trails the scent-marking trees, which are stained with a waxy substance – and the pandas seem to be doing this a lot,” said Connor. “It was pretty evident they were exchanging information through scent marking behavior.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pandas-practice-social-networking">Pandas practice social networking</h2>



<p>The research suggests that these scent-marking trees act as a social media platform for pandas, like Facebook for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wealth-inequality-exists-in-the-animal-kingdom-too/">animal kingdom</a>. Pandas use these trees to keep track of family and friends, share updates on life events, and even explore potential mates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This method of communication is asynchronous, allowing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pandas-have-fake-thumbs-to-manipulate-bamboo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandas</a> to broadcast information without being in the same place at the same time.</p>



<p>Connor teamed up with MSU Foundation Professor of Sociometrics Ken Frank, an expert on social networks and a co-author of the article.</p>



<p>The researchers did not have a camera on a bear every time it sniffed a tree, so they did not know which pandas were interacting.</p>



<p>“That’s a key part,” said Professor Frank. “I told him that once he has data on which bears are close to each other we can use the techniques and theories that apply to humans to understand their social networks.</p>



<p>“And these scent trees are a social media. Like Facebook, it’s asynchronous, meaning you don’t have to be in the same place at the same time. It allows one to broadcast to many, and it’s a record. A panda marking a tree isn’t so different from a Facebook post."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-in-panda-poop">Clues in panda poop</h2>



<p>One of the most innovative aspects of Connor's research involved analyzing panda poop. Given that pandas defecate about 90 times a day, their scat offers a wealth of data.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By collecting and examining fresh panda scat, Connor and his team were able to extract DNA to identify specific pandas in the vicinity of the scent-marking trees. This allowed them to determine relationships between individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/captive-pandas-become-jet-lagged-outside-of-their-natural-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pandas</a> and construct their social networks.</p>



<p>“We defined two panda individuals within a certain distance from each other as an association," said Connor. “Even if they’re not directly communicating or running into each other physically – they can exchange information in the chemical scent signature. That built up the social network for the analysis.”</p>



<p>According to Frank, once they could determine which bears were in close proximity, they could apply the social network technique of community or clique detection.</p>



<p>“It’s pretty much like high school,” Frank said. “And like in high school, cliques have lots of implications. There are strong norms within a clique – and while encountering those outside a clique is rare the information can be very important.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exchanging-valuable-information-nbsp">Exchanging valuable information&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Ultimately, the study revealed that pandas are far from reclusive. They form associations and exchange information through chemical scent signatures left on trees.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the experts observed that pandas tend to associate more with family members during non-mating seasons and broaden their social circles in mating seasons, possibly using the scent-marking trees as a territorial map. This behavioral shift is significant in preventing inbreeding and reducing competition among pandas.</p>



<p>Study senior author Jianguo “Jack” Liu emphasized the importance of the research.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The discoveries in this study shed new light on how pandas use their habitat,” said Liu. “Pandas are a part of coupled human and natural systems where humans share their habitat."</p>



<p>"Anything we can learn about how they live and what they need can ultimately help inform good conservation policies and maybe understand our own behavior a little more."</p>

<p>“With more than 26,000 species representing half of all vertebrates, bony <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-fascinating-behavior-of-archerfish-evolve/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishes</a> are extremely diverse and have colonized all possible ecological niches, through their ability to adapt their sensory systems,” explains Maryline Blin, the lead author and a Research Engineer at NeuroPSI.</p>



<p>Despite the rich diversity in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-do-fish-look-down-when-they-swim/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish species</a>, most behavioral studies have been limited to a few models, such as zebrafish. This research breaks new ground by linking the evolution of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-have-a-stress-response-that-runs-in-the-family/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish sensory systems</a> to their behavior, a largely unexplored area that has hindered cross-species comparisons.</p>



<p>The team chose two subtypes of the Mexican tetra species for their study: a blind cave-dwelling variant and its sighted surface river-dwelling counterpart. Despite similar genetic makeup related to smell, the cave-dwelling fish have evolved larger olfactory pits and different nerve compositions, possibly as an adaptive trait for survival in dark subterranean habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behavioral-responses-to-food-cues">Behavioral responses to food cues</h2>



<p>Intriguingly, the study revealed that cave-dwelling fish showed a pronounced behavioral response to alanine, a common food cue. This response included decreased back-and-forth swimming and a tendency to swim towards the amino acid source. </p>



<p>In contrast, surface-dwelling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-can-recognize-themselves-in-the-mirror/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> exhibited more subtle and individual-specific responses, indicating a significant evolutionary divergence in sensory perception and behavior between the two subtypes.</p>



<p>Further analysis revealed individual differences in response to various amino acids in both cave and surface-dwelling fish. </p>



<p>Surface <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-animals-suppress-their-personalities-for-safety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> with slower baseline swimming speeds demonstrated better olfactory abilities for certain odors, a trait not observed in cave-dwelling fish. Instead, a unique swimming pattern in the cavefish was indicative of stronger olfactory capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-personalities-in-fish-behavior">The role of 'personalities' in fish behavior</h2>



<p>Senior author Sylvie Rétaux, Research Director at NeuroPSI – CNRS, Université Paris-Saclay, explains, “We have developed a high-throughput, specific sense-of-smell test to compare the individual behavioral responses of blind and sighted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/color-patterns-influence-aggression-among-reef-fish/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> to different odors. In doing so, we have ruled out the possibility that, when within a group, one ‘good-smeller’ individual could drive others to respond.” </p>



<p>The team's high-throughput, specific sense-of-smell test ensured accurate individual responses by eliminating the influence of a single 'good-smeller' leading the group.</p>



<p>“Instead, our recordings of several hundred individual fish highlight an often-overlooked aspect of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-in-plain-sight-brilliant-hunting-strategy-of-the-trumpetfish-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish behavioral analyses</a>: that fish may have a ‘personality’ or ‘temperament’ that influences their behavior and, consequently, their success at responding to environmental cues," Rétaux concludes. "Moreover, the good sense of smell in cavefish is a genetically-encoded trait, so we will now actively search for the genetic underpinnings of this sensory specialization.”</p>

<p>Researchers have identified three potentially unique acoustic features of healing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-that-listen-to-music-grow-faster-and-healthier/">music</a> that are consistent across various genres.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This discovery could revolutionize how music therapy is personalized and how its effectiveness is evaluated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



<p>Music therapy has long been recognized for its therapeutic effects on mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. However, there's been no consensus on what exactly constitutes healing music.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To address this, the researchers sought to determine if healing music shares specific acoustic features, regardless of genre, and how these differ from regular music.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted">How the research was conducted</h2>



<p>Drawing from the expertise of 35 music therapists, a library of 165 diverse pieces of healing music was compiled.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These pieces, believed to aid emotional and mental health issues, were compared with a wide range of other music types, including 330 classical pieces, 50 traditional 5-element Chinese music pieces, 100 Jazz recordings, and 300 tracks from the Chinese affective music system.</p>



<p>The team analyzed the music using the Mirtoolbox and identified 370 acoustic features, grouped into five dimensions: energy, volume, loudness, rhythm, timbre, pitch, and key. Remarkably, over 25 percent of these features were genre-specific, but the rest were common across all genres.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-insights-nbsp">Key insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A comparison of these common features with healing classical and traditional Chinese music showed significant differences, leading to the identification of three distinct acoustic features of healing music.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These are the standard deviation of roughness, mean of the third coefficient of the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC3), and period entropy of MFCC3. These features, which relate to the perceived irregularity of sound, energy distribution in frequency ranges, and randomness in frequency patterns over time, were found to predict subjective emotional responses in listeners.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transcending-boundaries-nbsp">Transcending boundaries&nbsp;</h2>



<p>This discovery suggests that music's healing properties may indeed transcend cultural and genre boundaries. The researchers note that roughness in music can evoke various moods and emotional responses, such as tension or relaxation, depending on its level and context.</p>



<p>The findings were further validated by comparing the acoustic features of jazz pieces in the healing collection with regular jazz music. This supports previous research suggesting music's universal appeal and impact, regardless of culture or genre.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While acknowledging limitations due to a small expert pool and potential cultural biases, the researchers propose that these three acoustic features could be used to tailor therapeutic playlists for patients using AI algorithms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach could analyze physiological and psychological responses in real time, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of music therapy in various contexts, including stress reduction, mental health, and chronic pain management.</p>

<p>A recent study led by the <a href="https://www.ceh.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Centre for Ecology &amp; Hydrology</a> (UKCEH) reveals the startling impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/river-deltas-are-threatened-by-human-activities/">human activities</a> on bird populations worldwide. The research indicates that the number of human-driven bird extinctions is significantly greater than previously understood.</p>



<p>The study was led by Dr. Rob Cooke, an ecological modeler at UKCEH, and Dr. Søren Faurby of the <a href="https://www.gu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Gothenburg</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers estimate that about 1,430 bird species have gone extinct due to human activities since the Late Pleistocene around 130,000 years ago. This number is double the current estimates and includes species that disappeared before written records, vanishing without a trace.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Our study demonstrates there has been a far higher human impact on avian diversity than previously recognized," said Dr. Cooke.</p>



<p>"Humans have rapidly devastated bird populations via habitat loss, overexploitation and the introduction of rats, pigs and dogs that raided nests of birds and competed with them for food. We show that many species became <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/the-12-endangered-birds-most-at-risk-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinct</a> before written records and left no trace, lost from history.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-crisis-from-bird-extinctions">Biodiversity crisis from bird extinctions</h2>



<p>“These historic extinctions have major implications for the current biodiversity crisis," said Dr. Faurby. “The world may not only have lost many fascinating <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/why-are-birds-endangered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> but also their varied ecological roles, which are likely to have included key functions such as seed dispersal and pollination." </p>



<p>"This will have had cascading harmful effects on ecosystems so, in addition to bird extinctions, we will have lost a lot of plants and animals that depended on these species for survival.”</p>



<p>Islands that were once undisturbed paradises, such as Hawaii, Tonga, and the Azores, have seen significant ecological changes due to human colonization, leading to bird <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/australias-rarest-predatory-bird-is-facing-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinctions</a>. </p>



<p>The study reveals that 90 percent of the 640 known bird extinctions since the Late Pleistocene occurred on islands with human inhabitants, including species like the Dodo of Mauritius and the Great Auk of the North Atlantic.</p>



<p>The researchers used statistical modeling to estimate undiscovered bird <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farming-hunting-birds-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinctions</a>, revealing the largest human-driven vertebrate extinction event in history during the 14th century, primarily in the Eastern Pacific. They also identified a significant extinction event in the 9th century BC, related to human arrival in the Western Pacific and Canary Islands.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ongoing-threats">Ongoing threats</h2>



<p>The ongoing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diving-birds-face-a-greater-risk-of-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinction event</a>, which began in the mid-18th century, poses additional threats from climate change, intensive agriculture, and pollution. </p>



<p>The team's model, based on known extinctions and research efforts compared to New Zealand – where the pre-human bird fauna is completely known – suggests the possibility of losing up to 700 more bird species in the next few centuries.</p>



<p>Dr. Cooke emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts. “Whether or not further bird species will go extinct is up to us. Recent conservation has saved some species and we must now increase efforts to protect birds, with habitat restoration led by local communities.”</p>

<p>Perhaps one of the most striking features of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/james-webb-captures-incredible-new-image-of-uranus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uranus</a> is the planet's seasonal north polar cloud cap. <p>Through their analysis of over half a million snowflakes and the development of novel instrumentation, they have revealed a surprisingly simple pattern underlying the movement of these delicate ice crystals.</p>

<p>The speed at which snowflakes fall is of great interest in weather prediction and climate change research. According to Garrett, "How snowflakes fall has attracted a lot of interest for many decades because it is a critical parameter for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-is-becoming-more-difficult-to-predict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predicting weather</a> and climate change. This is related to the speed of the water cycle. How fast moisture falls out of the sky determines the lifetime of storms."</p>



<p>Snowflakes, often referred to as "letters sent from heaven" by the renowned Japanese physicist <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukichiro_Nakaya" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ukichiro Nakaya</a>, contain valuable information about temperature and humidity fluctuations in the clouds. Although each snowflake is believed to be unique in its intricate structure, researchers have discovered patterns in how they move through the air.</p>



<p>The movement of snowflakes has far-reaching consequences beyond weather forecasting. It also affects climate change predictions, even in tropical regions. </p>



<p>Garrett explains, "Most precipitation starts as snow. The question of how fast it falls affects predictions of where on the ground precipitation lands, and how long clouds last to reflect radiation to outer space. It can even affect forecasts of a hurricane trajectory."</p>



<p>Understanding the factors that influence snowflake movement is crucial for improving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mountains-face-low-to-no-snow-winters-in-a-warming-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forecasts of precipitation</a> distribution and the behavior of weather systems.</p>



<p>Measuring individual snowflakes accurately has been a long-standing challenge due to their low mass. Snowflakes often weigh around 10 micrograms, making high-precision measurements difficult. </p>



<p>To address this issue, Garrett collaborated with engineering faculty to develop the Differential Emissivity Imaging Disdrometer (<a href="https://amt.copernicus.org/articles/14/6973/2021/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DEID</a>). This innovative instrument measures snowflakes' hydrometeor mass, size, and density. The DEID has been successfully commercialized by Particle Flux Analytics, a company co-founded by Garrett, and is now deployed by the Utah Department of Transportation for avalanche forecasting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-surprisingly-simple-pattern-emerges">A surprisingly simple pattern emerges</h2>



<p>To study snowflake movement in natural environments, Garrett's team conducted field experiments at Alta, a renowned ski destination and Utah's snowiest place during the winter of 2020-21. They deployed the DEID alongside measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, and turbulence. </p>



<p>Additionally, a particle tracking system consisting of a laser light sheet and a single-lens reflex camera was set up to observe the movement of the snowflakes.</p>



<p>By analyzing the science and interaction between snowflakes and turbulence, while simultaneously measuring their mass, density, size, and observing their meandering paths, the researchers were able to obtain a comprehensive understanding of snowflake movement that was previously unavailable.</p>



<p>Contrary to expectations, the intricate shapes of snowflakes and their encounters with turbulent air did not result in unpredictable movements. Instead, the researchers discovered a surprisingly simple pattern. Snowflake acceleration was found to correlate with a parameter known as the Stokes number (St), which describes how quickly the particles respond to surrounding air movements.</p>



<p>Upon analyzing the acceleration of individual snowflakes, the researchers observed that the average acceleration increased nearly linearly with the Stokes number. Moreover, the distribution of these accelerations followed a single exponential curve that was independent of the Stokes number. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowflakes-and-atmospheric-science-mysteries">Snowflakes and atmospheric science mysteries</h2>



<p>This mathematical pattern could also be connected to how changes in snowflake shapes and sizes influence their falling speed. It suggests a fundamental relationship between air movement and the transformation of snowflakes during their descent from the clouds.</p>



<p>Garrett reflects on this unexpected finding, stating, "That, to me, almost seems mystical. There is something deeper going on in the atmosphere that leads to mathematical simplicity, rather than the extraordinary complexity we would expect from looking at complicated snowflake structures swirling chaotically in turbulent air. We just have to look at it the right way, and our new instruments enable us to see that."</p>



<p>Through meticulous analysis and the development of innovative instrumentation, the study led by Tim Garrett at the University of Utah has uncovered a surprisingly simple pattern in the movement of snowflakes. This research sheds light on the connection between air turbulence and the behavior of snowflakes during their descent. </p>

<p>A new study reveals that vervet monkeys exhibit diverse social "norms" and behaviors that are comparable to human customs, varying significantly across different communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Led by Elena Kerjean from the <a href="https://www.unil.ch/central/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Lausanne</a>, the research team spent nine years observing vervet monkeys and their unique social dynamics.</p>



<p>"Over the last decades, animal tradition studies not only helped researchers to better understand the diversity of intra-species behavioral repertoires, but also to unravel the evolutionary roots and the selective pressures leading to the emergence of culture," wrote the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-customs">Social customs</h2>



<p>The study provides new insights into the social behaviors of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/south-african-primates-face-multiple-threats/">primates</a>. Kerjean explained that the research has uncovered behavioral traditions of social customs in vervet monkeys that are stable across nine years.</p>



<p>This discovery challenges the previous understanding of animal behavior, as it demonstrates a complex social structure within vervet monkey groups, similar to human societies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-atmospheres">Social atmospheres</h2>



<p>One of the key findings of the study is the identification of different "social atmospheres" within vervet monkey groups.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These atmospheres, characterized by varying social customs, are passed down through generations, indicating a form of social learning.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-conformity-nbsp">Social conformity&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team also discovered a notable aspect of social adaptation: when male monkeys moved to a new group, they quickly adapted their social behaviors to align with the norms of their new community. This behavior suggests an element of social conformity and peer pressure among vervet monkeys.</p>



<p>“Males adapted their sociality to the group they integrated with, which we believe is a good example of social conformity,” said Kerjean.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This normative rule - act like others - probably helps them to get better integrated in a new group. This conformity effect had been previously shown through a novel food experiment, but this is the first time that we observed that with social behavior.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinct-behaviors">Distinct behaviors</h2>



<p>Kerjean, along with her colleagues Erica van de Waal and Charlotte Canteloup, analyzed over 84,000 social interactions among nearly 250 vervet monkeys.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analysis revealed distinct social behaviors in one group, named Ankhase (AK), where monkeys showed a higher tendency for reciprocal grooming compared to other groups. In this group, grooming was more fairly exchanged, with individuals reciprocally grooming each other, creating a more balanced social interaction.</p>



<p>“You can think about it like massage exchanges between individuals,” explained Kerjean. “If I give you a massage 100 times a year but you only did it two times, I may feel that our relation is quite unfair. That’s the kind of differences we observed between our groups.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research sheds light on the social structures and norms of vervet monkeys. It also offers new perspectives on animal behavior and social learning.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team's findings indicate that social norms among vervet monkeys are not only diverse but also stable over time, suggesting a deeper level of social complexity than previously understood.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, the researchers would like to learn more about how social traditions are introduced and passed on. They are especially curious to explore the role of key individuals or leaders in pressuring newcomers to follow incidence.</p>

<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.ntu.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nanyang Technological University, Singapore</a> (NTU Singapore), in collaboration with <a href="https://www.camfil.com/en/">Camfil</a>, a global air filter manufacturer, have discovered that office <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/improving-air-quality-could-reduce-severe-cases-of-covid-19/">air quality</a> significantly influences creativity. </p>



<p>The study revealed that high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) - gases emitted from products like detergents, pesticides, perfumes, aerosol sprays, and paint - adversely affected creativity in individuals tasked with constructing 3D models from LEGO bricks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-total-volatile-organic-compounds">Total volatile organic compounds</h2>



<p>Based on a statistical analysis, the NTU team determined that reducing total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) by 72 percent could potentially improve an individual’s creative potential by 12 percent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>TVOC is a measure of the concentration of volatile organic compounds in the air, commonly originating from interior decoration materials, household products, and other sources.</p>



<p>This study, conducted on the NTU Smart Campus, is part of a broader partnership between the University and Camfil.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This collaboration aims to examine the impact of indoor air quality on adult cognitive performance, evaluate air filter technologies in tropical climates, and develop innovative, energy-efficient clean air solutions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-air-quality-on-creativity">Impact of air quality on creativity</h2>



<p>Professor Ng Bing Feng and Professor Wan Man Pun, leading the research team and serving as Cluster Directors for Smart &amp; Sustainable Building Technologies at the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N), emphasized the significance of their findings.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“While most people would correctly associate indoor air quality with effects on the lungs, especially since we just emerged from a pandemic, our study shows that it could also have an impact on the mind and creative cognition, or the ability to use knowledge in an unconventional way," said Professor Ng.</p>



<p>"Our findings suggest that relatively low TVOC levels, even if well within the accepted threshold, could impact an individual’s creative potential."</p>



<p>Professor Wan highlighted the practical implications of these findings, particularly for creative industries. “This could have serious consequences for industries that rely on creativity for the bulk of their work. For instance, artists often use paints and thinners that release high levels of volatile organic compounds and may not know they need adequate ventilation to clear them from their workplace."</p>



<p>"The findings also point to how making minor adjustments in the office, such as reducing the use of aroma diffusers or ensuring adequate ventilation, could positively impact employees and their productivity,” he explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-assessing-creativity-from-air-quality">Assessing creativity from air quality</h2>



<p>To assess creativity, the NTU researchers employed the Serious Brick Play method, adapted from the LEGO Serious Play framework. This method involves participants building 3D LEGO models and providing written descriptions. These models and descriptions are then evaluated for creativity by a panel of judges.</p>



<p>“While the LEGO Serious Play framework has been used in various settings to unleash creative thinking and has even been used to support dementia patients, it does not have a quantitative assessment component and cannot systematically assess creativity. This is why we added a component to score participants on their creativity,” Ng said.</p>



<p>The findings suggest a notable link between air quality and cognitive functions, particularly creativity, underscoring the importance of maintaining healthy indoor environments in workplaces and other settings.</p>

Indoor air quality influences creativity

<p>In a significant shift towards sustainable energy, U.S. utilities have committed to achieving 100 percent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-could-be-powered-entirely-by-renewable-energy/">renewable energy</a> by 2060. This move, as highlighted in a study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10584-023-03645-7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Climatic Change</em></a>, is primarily driven by the utilities themselves, rather than state mandates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-transition-nbsp">Rapid transition&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study co-author Matthew Burgess, assistant professor at <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CU Boulder</a>, commented on the pace of this transition. </p>



<p>“Many people feel the transition on the policy side isn’t going fast enough,” Burgess said. “But the private sector is moving faster than we thought. A lot has to do with technology, costs going down, natural gas replacing coal, and renewables replacing fossil fuels - policy is not the only lever.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study-nbsp">Focus of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study, led by Grace Kroeger for her honors thesis in Environmental Studies at CU Boulder, was motivated by her experiences in energy and sustainability during an internship.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“I wanted to look critically at what the people on the ground are doing. For example, the companies that are responsible for the energy that we all use and consume,”&nbsp; Kroeger said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-research-was-conducted-nbsp">How the research was conducted&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Kroeger and Burgess analyzed 30 years of data, comparing state renewable energy targets with the utilities’ own goals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They examined the impact of Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and Clean Energy Standards (CES) across various states and how utilities’ own commitments align with these mandates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-nbsp">Critical insights&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers found that the industry is generally surpassing policy-driven efforts. Utilities appear to be on track to meet or exceed state goals, with projections indicating a fully decarbonized electric grid by 2060, assuming utilities adhere to their commitments. Inclusion of nuclear power in renewable portfolios could hasten this timeline to 2050.</p>



<p>A notable discovery was that utility companies plan to decarbonize even in states lacking renewable policies or goals. “For example, Southern Company has goals to decarbonize. But the states the company operates in - Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama - don’t have portfolio standards,” Kroeger said.</p>



<p>The study also revealed differences in approaches between blue and red states, with blue states generally adopting stricter renewable energy policies. However, most states, including red ones, are likely to decarbonize based on utilities’ own objectives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-implications-nbsp">Study implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While the findings are based on stated future plans of utilities, historical data shows a trend of utilities transitioning to renewables faster than anticipated. This progress, however, still falls short of the Biden Administration’s goal to eliminate fossil fuels from the U.S. energy sector by 2035, a target announced without accompanying policies or mandates.</p>



<p>“There’s a lot of really interesting stuff happening in the private sector. The private sector creates interesting decarbonization connections across states, and it has interesting connections to the policy space,” Burgess concluded.</p>

<p>New research involving <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a> researchers has uncovered important insights into a puzzling anomaly in Earth's magnetic field 3,000 years ago, thanks to <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Mesopotamian-brick_earth-magnetic-field_credit-Slemani-Museum_1medium-scaled.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient bricks</a> inscribed with the names of Mesopotamian kings.</p>



<p>The research describes how changes in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/earths-magnetic-field-origin-structure-and-impact-on-humanity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a> left a distinct imprint on iron oxide grains within these clay bricks, allowing scientists to reconstruct these changes based on the kings' inscriptions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-earth-s-magnetic-field-anomaly">Unveiling Earth's magnetic field anomaly</h2>



<p>This research utilizes a field known as "archaeomagnetism," which seeks magnetic field signatures in archaeological artifacts. The team hopes that by employing this method, they can enhance our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-can-switch-their-perception-of-earths-magnetic-field-on-and-off/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a> history while also providing more accurate dating of artifacts that were previously difficult to determine.</p>



<p>Co-author Professor Mark Altaweel of UCL Institute of Archaeology explains the significance of this work. He said, "We often rely on dating methods like radiocarbon dating to establish chronology in ancient Mesopotamia. However, common cultural remains such as bricks and ceramics cannot be easily dated because they lack organic material. This work establishes a crucial dating baseline for others to benefit from absolute dating using archaeomagnetism."</p>



<p>Over time, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migratory-bats-use-earths-magnetic-field-as-a-compass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a> undergoes weakening and strengthening, leaving a distinct signature on minerals that are sensitive to magnetic fields. </p>



<p>In this study, the team examined the latent magnetic signatures in iron oxide grains found in 32 clay bricks from various archaeological sites throughout Mesopotamia, which corresponds to present-day Iraq. These minerals acquired the strength of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-reversal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a> when the bricks were first fired thousands of years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-earth-s-magnetic-field">Mapping the Earth's magnetic field</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Mesopotamian-brick_earth-magnetic-field_credit-Slemani-Museum_1medium-scaled.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Each brick</a> was inscribed with the name of a specific king, enabling archaeologists to estimate the likely timespan during which the bricks were made. By combining the imprinted names and the measured magnetic strength of the iron oxide grains, the researchers constructed a historical map of the changes in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magnetic-field-disturbances-can-lead-migratory-birds-astray/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a>.</p>



<p>The study ultimately confirmed the existence of the "Levantine Iron Age geomagnetic Anomaly." This anomaly denotes a period from approximately 1050 to 550 BCE when the Earth's magnetic field was exceptionally strong in the region of modern-day Iraq for unknown reasons. </p>



<p>Evidence of this anomaly has been detected as far as China, Bulgaria, and the Azores, but data from the southern part of the Middle East itself have been scarce.</p>



<p>Lead author Professor Matthew Howland of <a href="https://www.wichita.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wichita State University</a> explains how ancient artifacts can be dated using this magnetic insight. He said, "By comparing ancient artifacts to our knowledge of the magnetic conditions in ancient times, we can estimate the dates when these items were heated up."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-archaeomagnetic-dating-advantages-and-precision">Archaeomagnetic dating: Advantages and precision</h2>



<p>To measure the iron oxide grains, the team delicately chipped tiny fragments from the broken faces of the bricks and used a magnetometer for precise measurements. Aside from shedding light on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-is-not-likely-to-reverse-any-time-soon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a> changes, this data provides archaeologists with a valuable tool for dating ancient artifacts.</p>



<p>The magnetic strength of iron oxide grains embedded within fired items can be measured and compared to the known strengths of past <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-birds-sense-earths-magnetic-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth magnetic fields</a>. This approach offers better resolution than radiocarbon dating, which only provides a date range within a few hundred years, as the reigns of kings often lasted from years to decades.</p>



<p>Moreover, archaeomagnetic dating helps to pinpoint the reigns of ancient kings with greater precision. While the length and order of their reigns are well-known, conflicting historical records have led to disagreements among archaeologists regarding the exact years of their reigns. The researchers found that their technique aligns with the archaeological understanding of the "Low Chronology" of these kings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rapid-magnetic-field-changes-and-anomalies">Rapid magnetic field changes and anomalies</h2>



<p>The study also revealed that during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II from 604 to 562 BCE, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/migrating-turtles-magnetic-field/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a> appeared to undergo rapid and substantial changes in just a short period. This finding adds weight to the hypothesis that intense spikes in magnetic field strength can occur.</p>



<p>Co-author Professor Lisa Tauxe of the <a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scripps Institution of Oceanography</a> (US) emphasizes the unique opportunity provided by well-dated archaeological remains from Mesopotamian cultures. </p>



<p>She explains, "The geomagnetic field is one of the most enigmatic phenomena in earth sciences. The rich Mesopotamian cultures, with their well-dated remains, especially bricks inscribed with the names of specific kings, provide an unprecedented opportunity to study changes in field strength with high time resolution, tracking changes that occurred over several decades or even less."</p>



<p>The research conducted with funding from the <a href="https://www.bsf.org.il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation</a> paves the way for a deeper understanding of Earth's magnetic field history and offers a new tool for more precise artifact dating. </p>



<p>In summary, by examining iron oxide grains within <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Mesopotamian-brick_earth-magnetic-field_credit-Slemani-Museum_1medium-scaled.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient bricks</a> and correlating them with the inscribed names of Mesopotamian kings, scientists have gained invaluable insights into the mysterious magnetic field anomaly from 3,000 years ago. </p>



<p>This study demonstrates the power of archaeomagnetism in unraveling Earth's ancient secrets and sheds light on the reigns of ancient kings, providing a more accurate timeline of their rule.</p>

Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
