<h2>Large-Scale Structure of the Cosmos</h2>
Stars are organised into galaxies which in turn appear to form clusters and superclusters, separated by voids.

Prior to 1989 it was commonly assumed that the superclusters were the largest structures in existence, and that they were distributed more-or-less uniformly throughout the universe in every direction.

However, in 1989, Margaret Geller and John Huchra discovered the “Great Wall”, a sheet of galaxies more than 500 million light years long and 200 million wide, but only 15 million light years thick. The existence of this structure escaped notice for so long because it requires locating the position of galaxies in three dimensions which involves combining location information about the galaxies with distance information from redshift.

In more recent studies the universe appears as a collection of giant bubble-like voids separated by sheets and filaments of galaxies, with the superclusters appearing as occasional relatively dense nodes.

At the centre of the local supercluster there is a gravitational anomaly, known as the Great Attractor, which is drawing in galaxies over a region hundreds of millions of light years across.

These galaxies are all redshifted, in accordance with the ‘Hubble flow’, as if they were receding from us and from each other, but the variations in their redshift are sufficient to reveal the existence of a concentration of mass equivalent to tens of thousands of galaxies.

The Great Attractor, discovered in 1986, lies at a distance of between 150 million and 250 million light years (250 million is the most recent estimate), in the direction of the Hydra and Centaurus constellations. In its vicinity there is a preponderance of large old galaxies, many of which are colliding with their neighbours, and/or radiating large amounts of radio waves.

Another indicator of large-scale structure is the ‘Lyman alpha forest’. This is a collection of absorption lines which appear in the spectral lines of light from quasars, which are interpreted as indicating the existence of huge thin sheets of intergalactic (mostly Hydrogen) gas. These sheets appear to be associated with the formation of new galaxies.

Finally, there is evidence of quantisation of redshift. There have been numerous studies investigating this phenomenon, but it is not universally accepted as real, and is the subject of considerable controversy.
Some caution is required in describing structures on a cosmic scale because things are not always as they appear to be. Bending of light by gravitation can result in images which appear to originate in a different direction from their real source. This kind of optical illusion can obscure the actual processes taking place.

Another possible optical illusion is where a galaxy cluster will contain galaxies with some random motion. When these random motions are converted to redshifts, the cluster will appear elongated, and this creates what is known as a finger of God; the illusion of a long chain of galaxies pointed at the earth.

There is much work in cosmology which attempts to model the large-scale structure of the universe. Using the big bang model and assumptions about the type of matter that makes up the universe, it is possible to predict the expected distribution of matter, and by comparison with observation work backward to support and refute certain cosmological theories.

Currently, observations indicate that most of the universe must consist of cold dark matter. Models which assume hot dark matter or baryonic dark matter do not provide a good fit with observations.

Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion — The astronomer Johannes Kepler’s main contribution to astronomy was his three laws of planetary motion.
Kepler found these laws empirically by studying extensive observations recorded by Tycho Brahe. He found the first two laws in 1609 and the third one in 1618. Isaac Newton was later able to derive the laws from his laws of motion and gravity, thereby producing strong evidence in favor of Newton’s inverse-square gravitational law.
Kepler’s First Law (1609): The orbit of a planet about the Sun is an ellipse with the Sun at one focus.
Kepler’s Second Law (1609): A line joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of times.
Kepler’s Third Law (1618): The square of the sidereal period of a planet is directly proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of the orbit.
Kepler’s First Law
There is no object at the other focus of a planet’s orbit. The semimajor axis, a, of an orbit is the average distance between the planet and the Sun. As a planet travels in its elliptical orbit, its distance, from the Sun, and speed vary.
A planet moves most rapidly when it is nearest the Sun, or at perihelion. A planet moves most slowly when it is farthest from the Sun, or at aphelion.
Kepler’s Second Law
This is also known as the law of equal areas. Suppose a planet takes 1 day to travel from point A to B. During this day, an imaginary line from the Sun to the planet will sweep out an area. The same area will be swept every day.
Kepler’s Third Law (Harmonic Law)
– P = object’s sidereal period in years
– a = object’s semimajor axis, in AU
– P2 = a3
The larger the distance from the Planet to the Sun, a, the longer the sidereal period. From this one can show that the larger the orbit is, the slower the average speed of the orbiting object will be.
Not Just Applicable to Planets
The laws are applicable whenever a comparatively light object revolves around a much heavier one because of gravitational attraction. It is assumed that the gravitational effect of the lighter object on the heavier one is negligible. An example is the case of a satellite revolving around Earth.

<h2>Lagrangian Point</h2>
In Lagrangian mechanics, a Lagrangian point (or L-point) is one of five positions in space where the gravitational fields of two bodies of substantial but differing mass combine to form a point at which a third body of negligible mass would be stationary relative to the two bodies.

Bodies at the L-point will not move relative to the parent bodies if they are not perturbed by other gravitational forces. They are sometimes also referred to as libration points.
<h2>The five points are labelled and defined as follows:</h2>
<h3>L1</h3>
On the line defined by the two large masses, and between them.
Example: An object which orbits the Sun more closely than the Earth does would normally have a shorter orbital period than the Earth, but that ignores the effect of the Earth’s own gravitational pull. If the object is directly between the Earth and the Sun, then the effect of the Earth’s gravity is to weaken the force pulling the object towards the Sun, and therefore increase the orbital period of the object. The closer to Earth the object is, the greater this effect is. At a certain point, called the L1 point, the orbital period of the object becomes exactly equal to the Earth’s orbital period. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) ( http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/ ), for example, is stationed in a halo orbit around the Sun-Earth L1 point.
<h3>L2</h3>
On the line defined by the two large masses, and beyond the smaller of the two.
Example: A similar effect occurs on the other side of the Earth, further away from the Sun, where the orbital period of an object would normally be greater than that of the Earth. The extra pull of the Earth’s gravity decreases the orbital period of the object, and at the L2 point that orbital period becomes equal to the Earth’s.
<h3>L3</h3>
On the line defined by the two large masses, and beyond the larger of the two.
Example: A third Lagrangian point, L3, exists on the opposite side of the Sun, a little further away from the Sun than the Earth is, where the combined pull of the Earth and Sun again causes the object to orbit with the same period as the Earth. When used with the Sun and the Earth as the two masses, the L3 point was a popular place to put an “Anti-Earth” in pulp science fiction and comic books.
<h3>L4</h3>
At the third point of an equilateral triangle with the base of the line defined by the two masses, such that the point is ahead of the smaller mass in its orbit around the larger mass.
<h3>L5</h3>
At the third point of an equilateral triangle with the base of the line defined by the two masses, such that the point is behind the smaller mass in its orbit around the larger mass.
Example: The L4 and L5 points lie 60 degrees ahead of and 60 degrees behind the Earth in its orbit around the Sun. Unlike the other Lagrangian points, these points are resistant to perturbation, and therefore objects tend to accumulate around these points.

The latter two types of Lagrange points are sometimes called triangular Lagrange points or Trojan points.
In practice the stability of Lagrange points is not real, as there are more than three bodies in the universe. Additional gravitational pulls from elsewhere cause objects to move away from the point. The first three Langrangian points are stable only in the plane perpendicular to the line between the two bodies. This can be seen most easily by considering the L1 point.

The Earth’s companion object 3753 Cruithne is in a somewhat Trojan-like orbit around the Earth, but not in the same manner as a true Trojan. It has a regular solar orbit that is bumped at times by Earth. When the asteroid approaches Earth, the asteroid takes orbital energy from Earth and moves into a larger, higher energy orbit.
When the asteroid (in a larger and slower orbit) is caught up by Earth, Earth takes the energy back and so the asteroid falls into a smaller, faster orbit and eventually catches Earth to begin the cycle anew. Epimetheus and Janus, satellites of Saturn, have a similar relationship, though they are of similar masses and so actually exchange orbits periodically. Another similar configuration is known as orbital resonance, in which orbiting bodies tend to have periods of a simple integer ratio, due to their interaction.

The Saturnian moon Tethys has two smaller moons in its L4 and L5 points, Telesto and Calypso. The Saturnian moon Dione has the moon Helene in its L4 point.

Astronomy &amp; Geophysics (A&amp;G) is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS). It was established in 1960 as The Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society; the name was changed in 1997. As of May 2012, the editor-in-chief is Sue Bowler (University of Leeds).

Agronomy for Sustainable Development is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by Springer Science+Business Media. The journal was founded in 1981, at which time less than 10 percent of published material was in English. It underwent a series of major changes from 2003 to 2006, including the addition of extra field editors, switching from hardcopy to full electronic managing, producing all English material, and setting up a pre-selection committee at the submission stage.

The journal is one of seven produced by the Institute of Agronomical Research (INRA). The journal is managed by a collaboration of two INRA departments: the Departments of Environment and Agronomy and of Sciences for Action and Development. It publishes research on the interactions between cropping systems and other activities in the context of sustainable development.

<h2>Napalm</h2>
It used for military operations, is a thickening/gelling agent generally mixed with gasoline or other fuel. This term comes from the ingredients of aluminum salts of naphthenic and palmitic acids. This style of napalm, however, has been long obsolete in warfare. “Napalm b” is the modern version of napalm although it is distinctly different from the previous form.

Napalm is often used as the generic name of several flammable liquids used in warfare. These are often forms of jellied gasoline that is expelled by flamethrowers in infantry and armored warfare. NapalmB is a mixture of plastic polystyrene and hydrocarbone benzene. It is used as thickening agent to make jellied gasoline. The ignition of NapalmB is easy to control and provided a great advantage to the soldiers, airmen, and sailors that used it.

The more modern napalm is composed primarily of benzene and polystyrene. Since the mixture is difficult to ignite a reliable pyrotechnic initiator must be used such as thermite or white phosphorus. NapalmB can burn up to 10 minutes while the old one only burned for 15 to 30 seconds.

In order to increase the deadliness of its predecessors Americans and Allied forces used Napalm 877. This substance is supposed to adhere to surfaces and is created by mixing NapalmB with gasoline in various proportions. Aside from the heat and flames, Napalm also deoxygenates the available air very quickly while also producing large amounts of carbon monoxide.

Greek fire which is similar to napalm was one of the first known uses of fire in warfare. Predating napalm was jellied gasoline mixtures that were used by Allied forces during World War II. Previous devices used latex; however, since natural rubber was almost impossible to obtain during the second World War a different product had to be developed. This need forced the development of synthetic rubber and lead to Louis Fieser creating synthetic napalm in 1942.

The Dow Chemical Company manufactured napalmB for the American armed forces although they experienced some boycotts due to napalmB’s ability to disfigure people. However, they did continue to produce it and eventually it became a symbol against the Vietnam War. When used as a weapon Napalm can cause severe burns to the skin and body, asphyxiation, unconsciousness, death, and an atmosphere of greater than 20% carbon monoxide as well as self-perpetuating windstorms of up to 70 miles per hour. This is all made effective since Napalm sticks to naked skin and is hard to remove.

One firebomb released from a plane can cause damage over an area of 2,500 square yards. It was used in flamethrowers before it became prevalent in firebombs. Napalm bombs burned out 40% of the area of Japanese target cities in World War II. The first of the napalm bombs was dropped on July 17, 1944, by 14 American P-38 lightning aircraft. NapalmB has been used in many wars including the Greek Civil War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Kim Phúc, a napalm survivor, says it is the most terrible pain you can imagine. Napalm can generate temperatures of 1,500 to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Phúc, having sustained third-degree burns to half her body, was not expected to live. However, South Vietnamese and American doctors performed 17 operations and eventually he was returned to health.

In 1980, Napalm was banned for use against civilian populations by the United Nations Convention of Certain Conventional Weapons.

<h2>Kevlar</h2>
a trademark of para-aramid synthetic fiber, is related to other aramids such as Nomex and Technora. DuPont developed Kevlar in 1965 and was first commercially used in the 1970s as a replacement for steel in racing tires. Its normal form is as a rope or a sheet of fabric that can be used as an ingredient in composite material components.

It is used in bicycle tires, racing sails, and body armor due to its high tensile strength-to-weight ratio. Twaron, produced in 1978, is a similar fiber with a similar chemical structure.

Kevlar is created in a synthesized solution from the monomers 1,4-phenylene-diamine and terephthaloyl chloride in a condensation reaction yielding hydrochloric acid as a byproduct. A patent war was ensued when Akzo used the process in the creation of Twaron.

Due to the use of sulfuric acid needed to keep the water-insoluble polymer in solution during its synthesis and spinning, Kevlar production is expensive. Ultraviolet light can degrade and decompose Kevlar, known as UV degradation, and is therefore rarely used outside.

Once Kevlar is spun it has a tensile strength of about 3,620 MPa. The strength comes from the many inter-chain bonds while additional strength comes from aromatic stacking interactions between adjacent strands. Salts and other impurities can interfere with strand interactions and caution must be taken in order to keep it out of production. The structure is a lot like silk protein in that it is a relatively rigid set of molecules that tend to form mostly planar sheet-like structures.

The lower the temperature the stronger the Kevlar is while at a higher temperature the tensile strength is immediately reduced by about 10-20%. Kevlar is used in combat helmets, ballistic face masks, and Ballistic vests. It is also used in bulletproof facemasks, emergency service’s protection gear if it involves high heat, and in Kevlar body armor such as vest for police officers, security, and SWAT. It is used to manufacture gloves, sleeves, jackets, chaps, and other clothing articles designed to protect users from cuts, abrasions, and heat.

Many times it is used as an inner lining in bicycle tires to prevent punctures and also for fire poi wicks due to its excellent heat resistance. It is used in paraglider suspension lines and as a replacement to more expensive hemp bow strings.

<h2>Gore-Tex</h2>
Registered to W. L. Gore, Gore-Tex is a waterproof/breathable fabric that was co-invented by Wilbert L. Gore and Rowena Taylor. In 1976, Robert Gore was granted a patent for a porous form of polytetrafluoroethylene with a micro-structure characterized by nodes interconnected by fibrils. Gore was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006.

PTFE is created by using an emulsion polymerization process that utilizes the fluorosurfactant PFOA. Gore-Tex materials are typically based on thermo-mechanically expanded polytetrafluoroethylene.
<h3>It used in a wide variety of applications such as:</h3>

 	<li>high performance fabrics</li>
 	<li>medical implants</li>
 	<li>filter media</li>
 	<li>insulation for wires and cables</li>
 	<li>gaskets</li>
 	<li>sealants</li>

Gore-Tex is known for its protective rain wear.

The basic rain wear consists of two layers where the outer layer is typically nylon or polyester which provides strength. The inner layer is polyurethane and provides water resistance at the cost of breathability.

The early designs of Gore-Tex fabric use a porous fluoropolymer membrane as the inner later that was bonded to a fabric. This membrane had around 9 billion pores per square inch. The pores are smaller than water droplets and are impenetrable to liquid. This Teflon membrane was layer found to be easily damaged when exposed. This resulted in a third layer being added. Lastly a loose fabric shell is added to the garment in order to protect the sandwich membrane although this design has been criticized for reduced performance.

Vent and Epic avoid the need for inner PU coating and have been shown to have better breathability while still being rainproof. Dirt and even human sweat can block the pores that allow breathability in the Gore-Tex and should therefore be kept as clean as possible for performance reasons. Through cleaning and normal use the Durable Water Repellent treatment on the surface of the fabric can be reduced. Gore-Tex requires that all garments made of their material have taping over the seams to eliminate leaks. The Windstopper, Gore’s sister product, is similar to Gore-Tex yet it is windproof and breathable although not waterproof.

It is also utilized as a replacement for torn anterior cruciate ligament and posterior cruciate ligament as well as being used to coat instrument strings. Gore-Tex material is also a key component of a new fuel cell design of hybrid cars.

<h2>The flip or clamshell</h2>
It is a form factor found mainly in cellphones in the electronics market. There are typically two distinct sections of the device that fold together via a hinge. When the device is open, it is up and ready to be used, and provides more surface area then when closed. When the unit is closed, the interface components such as keys and display are protected and the device is shorter, making for easier to be carried and stored. A disadvantage of the flip unit is the connecting hinge, which is prone to fatigue or failure.

This type of device is most closely associated with the mobile phone market; Motorola used to have a trademark on the term â€œflip phone,â€ but now, the term has become synonymous with most phones that flip open. Notably, the phrase â€œflip phoneâ€ seems to roll off the tongue more easily than clamshell phone.

The design has been used in other areas, such as in some landline phones, cordless ones in particular. Other devices that use the clamshell form are laptops, notebooks, the Game Boy Advance SP handheld game system and the popular Nintendo DS; although these devices are less frequently described as flip or clamshell compared to cell phones.

The Flip form factor was first implemented by laptop maker GRiD for their Compass model in 1982. The first Motorola model to support this design was the StarTAC, created in 1996, though GTE held the trademark for its Flip Phone from the 1970s until 1993. The design has since been copied by nearly all mobile phone makers at some point, with many still mass-producing flip-style phones. Motorola is perhaps best known for its clamshell models such as the RAZR.

Clamshells were, as of early 2009, the most popular form factor for cell phones in the US. However, they have been losing popularity to phones that now have slide-out keyboards and touchscreen displays.

Other devices that use the clamshell form factor include pocket watches, waffle irons, some toasters, and of courseâ€¦ the George Foreman Grill.

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>
