Hotter summers are not just uncomfortable, they also changing the odds of getting sick from food. A new analysis links warmer air, higher moisture, specific dewpoint ranges, and longer daylight to spikes in Salmonella infections across two European countries. 



The team showed that risk climbs when average temperatures rise above about 50°F and days stretch past 12 to 15 hours.



Lead author <a href="https://www.londonntd.org/research/researchers/laura-c-gonzalez-villeta" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Laura C. González Villeta</a> of the University of Surrey’s <a href="https://www.surrey.ac.uk/school-veterinary-medicine" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Veterinary Medicine</a> led work that tied laboratory confirmed Salmonella cases to local weather conditions using a transparent statistical approach.



The bacteria called Salmonella cause <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/15697-salmonella" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food poisoning</a> that often brings diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Common symptoms usually start within hours to a few days and most people recover without treatment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmonella-and-the-weather">Salmonella and the weather</h2>



Researchers linked daily case counts from the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/uk-health-security-agency" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Health Security Agency</a> to detailed weather from the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a>, then checked the model with national surveillance data from the Netherlands. 



They examined 14 factors, including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, sunshine, and dewpoint temperature.



Instead of forcing a complex equation to fit the data, the group calculated a conditional incidence that directly describes how often cases occur when specific combinations of weather are present. 



That method lets you see which trio of conditions lines up with higher infection counts without hiding the signal inside a black box.



The approach showed consistency when moved from one country to another after accounting for reporting differences. That matters because public <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/to-get-fit-and-stay-healthy-walk-this-exact-distance-every-day/">health</a> tools work best when they travel across borders without losing accuracy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-model-found">What the model found</h2>



Risk rose when average air temperatures topped roughly 50°F, day length sat between 12 and 15 hours, and dewpoint hovered around the mid 40s to about 50°F. The same pattern appeared regardless of location.



Not every weather knob seemed important. Wind speed, air pressure, and sunshine duration had little or no association with reported cases in this dataset.



Seasonal peaks in late summer were reproduced when the model fed on local weather. That gave officials a way to anticipate risk based on last week’s skies rather than waiting for lab reports to trickle in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-weather-boosts-salmonella">How weather boosts Salmonella</h2>



Broader evidence lines up with these findings. A large <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11530612/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meta-analysis</a> of 23 Salmonella studies found about a 5 percent rise in risk for every 1.8°F increase in temperature.



Europe’s outbreak history shows why this topic matters. In 2018, nearly one in three foodborne outbreaks in the European Union were caused by Salmonella, according to an EFSA <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/news/salmonella-most-common-cause-foodborne-outbreaks-european-union" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>.



That baseline risk has not disappeared in recent years. Surveillance summaries still identify Salmonella as a leading cause of foodborne outbreaks across the region, with eggs and mixed foods often involved, as noted in EFSA’s public <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/7666" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">publication</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-this-means-for-public-health">What this means for public health</h2>



“The study highlights how weather plays a significant role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-overlooked-sources-of-antibiotic-resistant-salmonella/">Salmonella</a> outbreaks and provides a valuable tool for predicting future risks and tailoring interventions, particularly in the context of climate change,” said Dr. Villeta. The work is not just about describing patterns.&nbsp;



Weather aware forecasting can help agencies time inspections, target hygiene messaging, and plan surge capacity when the odds of illness tick up. 



Food businesses can also adjust cold chain checks, staff training, and consumer advice when riskier conditions line up.



Individuals are not powerless either. Keep cold foods cold, cook poultry and eggs to safe temperatures, refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, and wash hands and surfaces, especially when the air is warm and the day runs long.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-tech-forecasting-tools">High-tech forecasting tools</h2>



Most forecasting tools lean on regression or time series fits that struggle with tangled, non linear interactions. 



The conditional incidence approach shows how combinations of temperature, humidity, and daylight align with cases, which is easier to interpret and to explain.



That clarity helps separate what drives risk from noise. It also allows public health teams to identify factor combinations that do not explain much, saving effort where it will not pay off.



Model outputs replicated real world peaks and mapped risk at fine spatial scales. That is the level where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childrens-screen-time-shapes-their-mental-health-as-teens/">health</a> departments and food producers make day to day choices.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limits-and-next-steps">Limits and next steps</h2>



The model tracks reported cases, which understate total infections. Even so, de trending and validation across two countries suggest the weather signals are real.



Future tests in different climates and income settings would show how far the method travels. Adding data on livestock density, land use, and consumer behavior could sharpen predictions without losing transparency.



Better early warnings do not replace basic food safety, but they can make those steps more timely. That is useful as warmer summers and longer heat seasons become more common.

A recent study has revealed that modern commercial aircraft flying at higher altitudes produce longer-lasting contrails that contribute more to global warming than those generated by older planes. 



This finding suggests that although modern airplanes emit less carbon, their overall impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aviations-contribution-to-climate-change-is-expected-to-intensify/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> may be greater due to the contrails they create.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-footprint-of-the-aviation-industry-nbsp">Environmental footprint of the aviation industry&nbsp;</h2>



Conducted by scientists at the <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College London</a> (ICL), the study sheds light on the significant challenges the aviation industry faces in its efforts to reduce its environmental <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aviations-contribution-to-climate-change-is-expected-to-intensify/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">footprint</a>.&nbsp;



The study also found that private jets, contrary to previous assumptions, produce more contrails than previously thought, potentially leading to a disproportionately large impact on climate warming.



Contrails, or condensation trails, are thin streaks of cloud formed by aircraft exhaust fumes that contribute to global warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere.&nbsp;



While the exact warming effect of contrails is uncertain, scientists believe it is greater than warming caused by carbon emissions from jet fuel.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-airplanes-create-more-contrails-nbsp">Modern airplanes create more contrails&nbsp;</h2>



The study, published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ad5b78" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Research Letters</a>, employed machine learning to analyze satellite data on more than 64,000 contrails from a variety of aircraft flying over the North Atlantic Ocean.&nbsp;



The researchers found that modern aircraft, such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787, which fly at altitudes above 38,000 feet (about 12 km), create more contrails than older commercial aircraft.



Modern aircraft are designed to fly at higher altitudes where the air is thinner, which reduces aerodynamic drag and consequently lowers <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon emissions</a> per passenger.&nbsp;



However, this also means that these aircraft produce contrails that persist longer, extending their warming effect. This presents a complex trade-off for the aviation industry, as efforts to improve fuel efficiency inadvertently increase the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-aircraft-demonstrate-major-climate-benefits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate impact</a> of contrails.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-double-whammy-for-climate-warming-nbsp">Double whammy for climate warming&nbsp;</h2>



Edward Gryspeerdt is the lead author of the study and a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment at ICL.&nbsp;



“It's common knowledge that flying is not good for the climate. However, most people do not appreciate that contrails and jet fuel carbon emissions cause a double whammy warming of the climate. This study throws a spanner in the works for the aviation industry,” said Gryspeerdt.



“Newer aircraft are flying higher and higher in the atmosphere to increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The unintended consequence of this is that these aircraft flying over the North Atlantic are now creating more, longer-lived, contrails, trapping additional heat in the atmosphere and increasing the climate impact of aviation.”



According to Gryspeerdt, this doesn’t mean that more efficient aircraft are a bad thing – far from it, as they have lower carbon emissions per passenger-mile. “However, our finding reflects the challenges the aviation industry faces when reducing its climate impact,” he added.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-contrails-from-modern-airplanes">Reducing contrails from modern airplanes </h2>



The study also confirmed a straightforward measure that can reduce the lifespan of contrails: decreasing the amount of soot emitted from aircraft engines.&nbsp;



Modern aircraft engines, which are designed to be cleaner, typically emit fewer soot particles, thereby reducing the lifetime of contrails. While previous studies using models predicted this phenomenon, the current study is the first to confirm it through real-world observations.



Study co-author Dr. Marc Stettler is a Reader in Transport and the Environment in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at ICL.



“From other studies, we know that the number of soot particles in aircraft exhaust plays a key role in the properties of newly formed contrails. We suspected that this would also affect how long contrails live for,” noted Dr. Stettler.



“Our study provides the first evidence that emitting fewer soot particles results in contrails that fall out of the sky faster compared to contrails formed on more numerous soot particles from older, dirtier engines.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-impact-of-private-jets">Climate impact of private jets</h2>



The research also revealed that private jets, which fly at even higher altitudes, produce contrails more frequently than previously thought, raising concerns about their climate impact.&nbsp;



Despite being smaller and using less fuel, private jets create contrails similar to those generated by much larger commercial aircraft, which surprised the researchers.



“Despite their smaller size, private jets create contrails as often as much larger aircraft. We already know that these aircraft create a huge amount of carbon emissions per passenger so the super-rich can fly in comfort,” said Gryspeerdt.



“Our finding adds to concerns about the climate impact caused by private jets as poor countries continue to get battered by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-tens-of-millions-of-people-love-watching-videos-of-extreme-weather-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme weather events</a>.”



This study highlights the complex and often contradictory effects of modern aviation on climate change, suggesting that even as the industry reduces carbon emissions, other factors like contrail formation may undermine these efforts.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas commonly produced in marine and freshwater environments, with lakes being significant sources of its release into the atmosphere. 



Fortunately, there are microorganisms capable of mitigating this issue by using methane as a source of energy and growth, thereby preventing its escape into the atmosphere. These microorganisms, known as methanotrophs, act as a crucial “biological methane filter.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lake-bacteria-and-climate-regulation">Lake bacteria and climate regulation </h2>



Methanotrophs consist of diverse groups of microorganisms, many of which remain understudied.&nbsp;



A recent study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.mpi-bremen.de/en/Home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology</a> in Bremen, Germany, in collaboration with the Swiss research institution <a href="https://www.eawag.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eawag</a>, sheds light on the remarkable capabilities of some of these organisms and their overlooked role in climate regulation. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lake-bacteria-in-oxygen-deprived-water">Lake bacteria in oxygen-deprived water</h2>



In their research, a team led by Sina Schorn and Jana Milucka from the Max Planck Institute explored Lake Zug in Switzerland. This lake, nearly 200 meters deep, is devoid of oxygen below a depth of approximately 120 meters.&nbsp;



Despite the lack of oxygen, the researchers discovered the presence of aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in these oxygen-deprived waters. These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/methane-eating-bacteria/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a>, which typically require oxygen to function, posed a mystery: how could they break down methane in an environment devoid of oxygen?



To address this question, the team closely examined the activity of these microorganisms. They introduced methane molecules labeled with “heavy” carbon atoms (13C instead of 12C) into natural lake water samples containing these bacteria.&nbsp;



Using specialized instruments called NanoSIMS, the researchers traced the path of the heavy carbon within individual cells.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-results-of-the-study">Results of the study</h2>



This technique allowed them to observe how the bacteria convert methane into carbon dioxide, while some of the carbon was also incorporated directly into the bacterial cells. This method revealed the active members of the bacterial community.&nbsp;



Through advanced techniques like metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, the researchers further explored the metabolic pathways employed by the bacteria.



According to Schorn, now a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, the results of the study show that aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria remain active also in oxygen-free water.



“However, this only applies to a certain group of MOB, easily recognizable by their distinctive rod-shaped cells. To our surprise, these cells were equally active under oxic and anoxic conditions, i.e., with and without <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/it-took-200-million-years-for-earth-to-get-its-oxygen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxygen</a>,” said Schorn. 



“Thus, if we measure lower rates of methane oxidation in anoxic waters, it is probably because there are fewer of these special rod-shaped cells and not because the bacteria are less active.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bacteria-s-response-to-low-oxygen-levels">Bacteria's response to low oxygen levels </h2>



The researchers were further intrigued by the metabolic versatility of this bacterial group. "Based on the genes present, we were able to determine how the bacteria respond when oxygen becomes scarce,” said Jana Milucka, head of the Greenhouse Gases Research Group at Max Planck. “We found genes that are used for a special type of methane-based fermentation.” 



This process had previously been observed in methane-oxidizing bacteria cultures in the laboratory, but its presence in natural environments had not been confirmed.&nbsp;



The researchers also identified several genes related to denitrification, which likely enable the bacteria to utilize nitrate instead of oxygen for energy production.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-methane-sinks">Unexpected methane sinks</h2>



The fermentation process is particularly noteworthy. “If the MOB perform fermentation, they likely release substances that other bacteria can use for growth. This means the carbon contained in the methane is retained in the lake for a longer period of time and does not reach the atmosphere,” explained Milucka.&nbsp;



“This represents a sink for methane carbon in anoxic environments that is typically not accounted for, which we will need to include in our future calculations.”



This study reveals the organisms responsible for methane degradation in oxygen-free habitats and how this process occurs, highlighting the unexpected significance of methane-oxidizing bacteria in controlling methane release from such environments to the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-methane-degradation-by-bacteria">Significance of methane degradation by bacteria</h2>



Schorn pointed out that methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is responsible for about a third of the current global rise in temperature. 



“Methane oxidation by microorganisms is the only biological sink for methane," noted Schorn. This means that methane-oxidizing bacteria are crucial for controlling methane <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-reductions-in-methane-emissions-are-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a> and for regulating the global climate. 



“Given the current and predicted increase in anoxic conditions in temperate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-lakes-produce-less-methane-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lakes</a>, the importance of MOB for methane degradation in lakes is expected to grow,” said Schorn.



“Our results suggest that MOB will make a significant contribution to greenhouse gas mitigation and carbon storage in the future.”



The findings are published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-49602-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Communications</a>.

Often perceived as a tug of war between different goals, forest restoration has typically been viewed through the lens of trade-offs. Is the goal to capture carbon, rehabilitate nature, or perhaps, enhance human livelihoods? 



Thanks to new research, we may no longer need to choose just one. The study, spearheaded by Dr. Trisha Gopalakrishna, reveals that restoration plans aimed at a solitary goal often fall short in achieving others.



However, they found that an 'integrated' approach can concurrently deliver over 80% of the benefits in all three areas: human livelihoods, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-restoration-efforts">Forest restoration efforts</h2>



The researchers utilized a framework known as Nature's Contribution to People (<a href="https://www.ipbes.net/news/natures-contributions-people-ncp-article-ipbes-experts-science" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCP</a>), which underscores the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-day-of-forests-2024-new-solutions-for-a-better-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mutually beneficial relationship</a> that exists between restoration efforts and the advantages they bring to humanity.



They examined large regions in India, assessing the potential benefits of naturally regenerating native forests in areas not currently part of the forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequence-of-narrow-focus">Consequence of narrow focus</h2>



"Restoration projects sometimes have a narrow focus, which can lead to trade-offs," warns Dr. Gopalakrishna, currently from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>, previously affiliated with <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oxford University</a>. 



For example, if you focus on carbon storage, you might plant particular tree species and fence the forests off to protect them.



If you focus on biodiversity, you might manage forests for particular species, like the emblematic Bengal tiger or Asiatic elephant. 



If you focus on human livelihoods, you might plant species that provide housing materials and fuelwood for cooking.



"The philosophy you choose would dictate your choices. Unsurprisingly, our study shows that plans with one NCP in mind tend not to deliver the others," Dr. Gopalakrishna explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-integrated-philosophy-and-forest-restoration">Integrated philosophy and forest restoration</h2>



Dr. Gopalakrishna calls attention to the strength of an integrated approach.



"We were surprised and pleased to find that an 'integrated' plan can deliver all three remarkably efficiently,” she shares. 



Furthermore, she points out that this approach disproportionately benefits socioeconomically disadvantaged groups, pointing towards a more equitable model of forest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-2024-a-call-for-land-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-restoration-in-practice">Forest restoration in practice</h2>



In practice, the researchers used an optimization algorithm to pinpoint the possible forest restoration area, avoiding land that’s better suited for agriculture or grasslands. 



The results painted a compelling picture: integrated forest restoration plans deliver 83.3% of climate change mitigation NCP, 89.9% of biodiversity value NCP, and 93.9% of societal NCP, as compared to single-objective plans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-integration-work">Why does integration work?</h2>



According to Dr. Gopalakrishna, integrated plans work well because they create a multifunctional landscape. They provide connectivity that enables a thriving ecosystem for both humans and animals.



The researchers discovered that 38-41% of individuals affected by integrated spatial plans come from socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. 



This percentage is notably higher than their overall representation in India’s population, suggesting a positive shift towards a more equitable approach to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planting-trees-is-important-but-reforestation-can-help-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation efforts</a>. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-social-equity">Social equity</h2>



By involving underrepresented communities in spatial planning, these initiatives not only address environmental concerns but also promote social equity. 



This finding highlights the importance of inclusive practices in conservation, ensuring that the benefits of such plans reach those who are often marginalized.



It reinforces the idea that effective conservation strategies must consider the social dynamics at play, ultimately leading to better outcomes for both the environment and the communities involved. 



As we move forward, it is crucial to continue monitoring and supporting policies that prioritize the inclusion of disadvantaged groups in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planting-trees-is-important-but-reforestation-can-help-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation efforts</a>, fostering a more just and sustainable future for all.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead">Looking ahead</h2>



While this research offers a promising blueprint for conservation policy, Dr. Gopalakrishna acknowledges the need for further study. 



She urges an exploration of whether these findings hold true in other countries with different types of ecosystem restoration plans.



In conclusion, this research, funded by the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development, offers a roadmap for forest conservation that no longer requires sacrificing one benefit for another.



Instead, it offers a compelling case for an integrated approach that delivers on multiple fronts - improving livelihoods, protecting biodiversity, and combating climate change.

Imagine the tranquility of a bright, sunny morning being disrupted by the loud bellowing of a massive ship's horn as it departs from the dock, leaving a trace of sulfur in its wake. 



As the earth's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warmest year</a> on record, 2023 was characterized by such clamor, as more and more ships took to the seas.



But there's a twist. This time, nearly 20 percent of the year's record warmth was not caused by the grumbling engines of these vessels but the reduction in sulfur emissions from the shipping industry that occurred mainly in the northern hemisphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sulfur-emissions-in-ships">Sulfur emissions in ships</h2>



Back in 2020, the <a href="https://www.imo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Maritime Organization</a> took a significant step to curb pollution. They enforced regulations that deduced the sulfur content in global shipping fuel by about 80 percent.



Here's the interesting part: while the reduction did indeed lower the amount of sulfur aerosols being puffed into our atmosphere, it paradoxically <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperatures-increase-scientists-plan-slow-down-rising-heat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accelerated global warming</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-sulfur-cool-the-earth">How does sulfur cool the Earth?</h2>



When ships burn fuel, they release sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. 



This sulfur dioxide, when activated by sunlight, initiates a fascinating chemical dance in the atmosphere that results in the formation of sulfur aerosols. 



Water droplets love to cling onto these aerosols, forming linear clouds known as "ship tracks".



Ever noticed how a cloudy day feels cooler than a sunny day? 



That's because these clouds reflect sunlight, thus reducing the amount of heat that reaches the Earth's surface. So, the cloud count going down implies an inevitable rise in global temperatures.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-future">Lessons for future</h2>



The researchers made use of a machine learning approach to navigate a sea of over a million satellite images. They observed a 25 to 50 percent decline in visible ship tracks, and where the cloud count was down, the heat was up.



Visions of what the future holds, based on simulations of ship aerosols' effects in three climate models, suggest that we may be in for quite a heatwave. 



Roughly half of the potential warming from the shipping emission changes materialized in just four years since 2020, according to the new study. 



What's even more disconcerting is that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-volcanic-past-reveals-the-shocking-reality-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more warming is expected</a> as the climate response continues to unfold.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ships-sulfur-and-temperature">Ships, sulfur, and temperature</h2>



While sulfur emissions do contribute to temperature changes, they are not the sole culprit behind 2023's record warming. 



Rather, changes in sulfur emissions are but one piece of a vast and intricate puzzle consisting of oscillating climate patterns and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-becomes-a-more-potent-greenhouse-gas-as-climate-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas concentrations</a>.



Aerosols, thanks to their cooling properties, play the role of a climate veil by hiding a portion of the warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. 



Problem is, while these aerosols can travel long distances and strongly affect the Earth's climate, they don't linger very long in the atmosphere. So when their concentrations decrease suddenly, temperatures can spike dramatically.



"Cleaning up air quality faster than limiting greenhouse gas emissions may be accelerating climate change," according to the study's authors. 



In this era of rapid decarbonization, it is important to understand the potential magnitude of climate response.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-navigating-policy-implications">Navigating policy implications</h2>



This research emphasizes the crucial link between environmental policy and climate science, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to address shipping emissions. 



Policymakers should consider not only sulfur emissions but also their broader <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-just-experienced-its-hottest-day-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climatic impacts</a>. Balancing cleaner air with global temperature management is complex, and investing in alternative fuels is essential for sustainable maritime practices. 



The findings call for collaborative dialogue among scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders to effectively tackle climate change mitigation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sailing-into-the-unknown">Sailing into the unknown</h2>



This research reveals that changes in ocean temperatures could result from modifications in ocean clouds. 



These changes could be triggered incidentally by the sulfur associated with ship exhaust, or through deliberate climate intervention by reintroducing aerosols over the ocean.



However, several uncertainties linger. More precise data on ship positions and emissions, along with improved modeling that accurately represents potential oceanic feedback, could be the lighthouse guiding us towards a clearer understanding of the climate response to reduced sulfur emissions.

Reduced sulfur emissions from ships actually accelerated warming

Scientists often look to nature for solutions to humanity's most pressing challenges, and when it comes to understanding global warming, Earth's geological history provides a long-term perspective that is both enlightening and alarming.



Throughout Earth's history, catastrophic volcanic eruptions have periodically released vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere and oceans. These massive carbon releases triggered rapid climate warming, leading to mass extinctions both on land and in marine ecosystems.&nbsp;



Such periods of intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-volcanoes-chaos-poisoned-ferns-for-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanism</a> may have also disrupted the planet's carbon-climate regulation systems for millions of years, leaving lasting impacts on the global environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcanic-eruptions-and-major-climate-shifts-nbsp">Volcanic eruptions and major climate shifts&nbsp;</h2>



A recent study led by environmental scientists at <a href="https://ethz.ch/de.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zurich</a> explored how vegetation responds and evolves in the face of major climatic shifts. Moreover, the experts examined how these shifts influence Earth's natural carbon-climate regulation system. 



The research team conducted geochemical analyses of isotopes found in ancient sediments and compared these data with a specially designed model that incorporates vegetation's role in regulating Earth's geological climate system.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-shifts-in-earth-s-history">Climate shifts in Earth's history</h2>



By using this model, the scientists were able to simulate how the Earth system responds to intense carbon releases from volcanic activity under different scenarios. They focused on three significant climatic shifts in geological history, including the Siberian Traps event, which caused the Permian-Triassic mass extinction about 252 million years ago.



“The Siberian Traps event released some 40,000 gigatons (Gt) of carbon over 200,000 years,” said ETH Zurich professor Taras Gerya. “The resulting increase in global average temperatures between 5–10°C caused Earth's most severe extinction event in the geologic record.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-recovery-took-millions-of-years-nbsp">Plant recovery took millions of years&nbsp;</h2>



The study revealed that the recovery of vegetation following such a catastrophic event could take several million years. During this extended period, Earth's carbon-climate regulation system would have been severely weakened and inefficient, leading to prolonged climate warming.&nbsp;



“The recovery of vegetation from the Siberian Traps event took several millions of years and during this time Earth's carbon-climate regulation system would have been weak and inefficient, resulting in long-term climate warming,” explained lead author Julian Rogger, a scientist at ETH Zurich.



A critical finding of the study was that the severity of these catastrophic events was largely determined by how quickly emitted carbon could be sequestered back into Earth's interior. This process occurs through mechanisms such as silicate mineral weathering or the production of organic carbon, which effectively remove carbon from the atmosphere.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shift-in-earth-s-climate-evolution">Shift in Earth's climate evolution </h2>



The time required for the climate to stabilize and reach a new state of equilibrium depended significantly on how rapidly vegetation could adapt to the rising temperatures.



Some plant species managed to adapt by evolving or migrating to cooler regions. However, in many instances, the geological events were so catastrophic that plant species simply did not have enough time to migrate or adapt to the sustained increase in temperature.&nbsp;



The inability of vegetation to respond quickly enough to these drastic changes left a geochemical imprint on Earth's climate evolution that persisted for thousands, if not millions, of years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diminished-carbon-capacity-in-plants">Diminished carbon capacity in plants</h2>



The study's findings have critical implications for today's human-induced climate crisis. The research shows that disruptions in vegetation can prolong and intensify climate warming, as was the case in the geologic past.&nbsp;



In some historical instances, it took millions of years for the climate to achieve a new stable equilibrium due to the diminished capacity of vegetation to regulate Earth's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-plankton-play-a-big-role-in-the-global-carbon-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon cycle</a>.



“Today, we find ourselves in a major global bioclimatic crisis,” said senior author Loïc Pellissier, a professor of ecosystems and landscape evolution at ETH Zurich and WSL.&nbsp;



“Our study demonstrates the role of a functioning vegetation to recover from abrupt climatic changes. We are currently releasing greenhouse gasses at a faster rate than any previous volcanic event. We are also the primary cause of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-deforestation-crisis-how-can-we-stop-massive-forest-losses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global deforestation</a>, which strongly reduces the ability of natural ecosystems to regulate the climate.”



Pellissier warns that the current trajectory of human activity mirrors the catastrophic disruptions of the past, but at a much faster pace. “This study, in my perspective, serves as a 'wake-up call' for the global community,” he concluded.&nbsp;

Earth's volcanic past reveals the shocking reality of global warming

Ever pondered about the psychological discrepancy between genders when it comes to our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet's welfare</a> and climate change? How does this concern tie into our educational system?&nbsp;



Research led by <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a> has recently brought to light rather intricate details about our future generation's concern for climate change. A distinctive pattern has been identified – girls, apparently, bear more climate worries and actively involve themselves more in climate education as compared to boys.



The experts behind these revealing insights are Professor Nicola Walshe, Executive Director of UCL Center for Climate Change and Sustainability Education, and her diligent team at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education &amp; Society. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grand-investigation-from-climate-change">Grand investigation from climate change</h2>



The team at UCL examined the perceptions and experiences of 2,429 students aged 11-14 from 30 different English schools. Their objective? To understand how these youngsters comprehend climate change and sustainability education within the school curriculum and beyond.



Around 36% of students reported considerable concern about the future of our world. Half of them confirmed that climate troubles them to some degree. A majority, 53% to be exact, selected "anxious" when asked about the emotions climate stirs in them. As for faith in adults handling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperatures-increase-scientists-plan-slow-down-rising-heat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental issues</a> – a scant 16% concurred.



Now, here's where the gender disparity comes into play. Girls expressed significantly higher levels of worry – 44% to be precise, as opposed to 27% of boys.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-socioeconomic-twist">Socioeconomic twist</h2>



Societal brackets are a significant influence too. The study found that children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds were less likely to appreciate the learning of climate change compared to their more privileged peers.&nbsp;



So, we see here how the impact of climate change <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-days-getting-longer-rotation-slows-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concerns</a> varies across both gender and socioeconomic lines.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-perceptions-on-climate-change">Perceptions on climate change</h2>



The survey also revealed a lack of engagement with climate-focused career guidance in schools.&nbsp;



Only around one-third of the students felt their knowledge of climate change and sustainability could translate into job opportunities. Even fewer, a mere 17%, expressed interest in pursuing a sustainability-related career.



Among the less advantaged students, the figure was disappointingly low at only 14%. A stark reality indeed, given the demand for green careers in our rapidly evolving job market.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-in-depth-knowledge-on-climate-change">In-depth knowledge on climate change</h2>



Despite these worrying stats, there is a silver lining. The majority of students did express a desire to learn more about climate and sustainability.&nbsp;



Who wouldn't want to spend more time outside the classroom? However, just like the worries about climate change, the interest in learning seems to have a gender difference.



"Three quarters of the girls surveyed wanted to learn about how climate change impacts&nbsp;human health&nbsp;and well-being, compared to 60% of boys," explained Professor Walshe.



"We know climate anxiety is higher among&nbsp;girls, so a more holistic climate change <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-make-your-hometown-feel-like-somewhere-else/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">education</a> that addresses a broader range of areas, including health and well-being, may help mitigate young people's worries."



Does this call for a more holistic climate change education that addresses multiple realms including health and wellbeing? Perhaps this could alleviate the climate anxieties resonating among our young ones, particularly the girls.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recommendations-for-the-future">Recommendations for the future</h2>



To put these findings into perspective, the UCL research team presented five key recommendations. These include:



<ul>
<li>Fostering green careers provision.</li>



<li>Offering more hands-on climate-related projects within schools.</li>



<li>Embedding climate change and sustainability education across all subjects.</li>



<li>Addressing students' anxiety and hopelessness regarding the climate crisis.</li>



<li>Integrating more outdoor learning opportunities into the curriculum.</li>
</ul>



With their unique insights, the researchers have laid the groundwork for improved climate change and sustainability education. 



This research will prove invaluable to educators, policymakers, and the wider community, and I, for one, am eager to see what changes this will bring to our educational landscape.

While schools play a pivotal role in climate education, the involvement of parents and the wider community is equally critical. Research shows that parental engagement can significantly bolster a child's interest and understanding of environmental issues. 



When families engage in discussions about climate change at home and participate in community initiatives focused on sustainability, children are more likely to internalize these lessons. 



Engaging local organizations, community leaders, and environmental activists can also enrich the educational experience by providing real-world contexts to theoretical knowledge. 



Collaborative events, workshops, and educational programs that include both students and their families can foster a culture of sustainability, encouraging the next generation to take meaningful action toward combating climate change. 



Cultivating this triadic relationship - students, parents, and the community - holds the potential to empower young minds, making them not just passive recipients of information but active participants in the fight for our planet’s future.

According to a recent study, these changes are reshaping the natural world in significant ways. 



The far northern reaches of the Earth, including the tundra and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/single-degree-temperature-warming-boreal-forests-wreak-havoc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">boreal forests</a>, are witnessing notable shifts in vegetation structure. 



For generations, these lands have been the domain of hardy grasses, shrubs, and mosses - their resilience matched only by the tenacity of the local inhabitants.



However, with the ongoing trend of global warming, the once sparse and lonely tundra could become significantly taller and greener in the coming decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tundra-s-transformation-over-the-next-century">Tundra’s transformation over the next century</h2>



Research conducted by scientists from NASA suggests that we can expect the tundra greening trend to persist through the current century. 



The evolving forest structure could potentially absorb more carbon dioxide (CO2), a notorious greenhouse gas. However, it could also lead to increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abrupt-permafrost-thaw-releases-more-co2-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">permafrost thawing</a>, which might release stored, ancient carbon into the atmosphere.



The research was informed by millions of data points from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2) and Landsat missions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-tale-of-two-biomes">A tale of two biomes</h2>



Geographically, boreal forests predominantly grow between 50 and 60 degrees north latitude, encompassing large parts of Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, and Russia. These forests are home to evergreen species such as pine, spruce, and fir. 



Moving farther north, we encounter the tundra biome with its permafrost and limited growing season, which makes it a challenging environment for large trees or dense forests. Instead, shrubs, mosses, and grasses have become the primary vegetation.



The transition between these two biomes has been particularly intriguing. Previous studies had noticed an increase in plant growth and northward movement, encroaching into areas previously dominated by tundra shrubs and grasses.



The recently published NASA study reveals an even more significant presence of trees and shrubs in these tundra regions and adjacent transitional forests, where boreal regions meet the tundra. These changes are predicted to continue until at least the end of the century.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tundra-transformation-shifting-vegetation-patterns">Tundra transformation: Shifting vegetation patterns </h2>



"The results from this study advance a growing body of work that recognizes a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/changes-in-vegetation-are-a-key-driver-of-global-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shift in vegetation</a> patterns within the boreal forest biome," said lead researcher Paul Montesano. 



"We've used satellite data to track the increased vegetation growth in this biome since 1984, and we found that it's similar to what computer models predict for the decades to come. This paints a picture of continued change for the next 80 or so years that is particularly strong in transitional forests."



The changes in vegetation height and concentration could produce a range of effects on our global climate. As study co-author Chris Neigh suggests, the vegetation increase might offset some of the impact of rising CO2 emissions by absorbing more CO2 through photosynthesis, leading to carbon storage in trees, shrubs, and soil.



Conversely, this change might also cause permafrost areas to thaw, as darker vegetation absorbs more sunlight. This could potentially release CO2 and methane that has been stored in the soil for thousands of years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-nasa-is-predicting-the-future">How NASA is predicting the future</h2>



Harnessing the strengths of satellite data, machine learning, climate variables, and climate models, NASA scientists have embarked on a mission to model and predict future forest structures. 



They analyzed nearly 20 million data points from NASA's ICESat-2 and then matched these data points with thousands of scenes of North American boreal forests from 1984 to 2020, sourced from Landsat, a joint mission of NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey.



It's these advanced computing capabilities that allow researchers to create models from such large quantities of data, known as "big data" projects. 



NASA is utilizing technology like ICESat-2's lidar, an advanced laser instrument that measures the height of Earth's surface features from space.



Melanie Frost, a remote sensing scientist at NASA, emphasized the importance of understanding these environmental changes, as they are intertwined with our climate models. 



"Our climate is changing and, as it changes, it affects almost everything in nature. It's important for scientists to understand how things are changing and use that knowledge to inform our climate models," said Frost.



As the future unfolds, keeping a close eye on transformative trends in the tundra will be integral to our understanding – and perhaps even our mitigation – of global climate change.

Wildfires serve as a stark reminder of the world’s profound interconnectedness, where an event in one region can ripple across borders and manifest tangible repercussions elsewhere. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-wildfires-have-doubled-in-the-last-20-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Climate-driven wildfires</a> in Canada are transferring toxic chemicals through the air, reaching as far as the Northeastern U.S., thereby affecting air quality and raising significant health concerns. This alarming phenomenon was Investigated by researchers at <a href="https://sph.rutgers.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rutgers School of Public Health</a>.



The experts assessed the physical and chemical characteristics of wildfire-related particulate matter, marking the first such characterization from a climate-driven wildfire event in the densely populated Northeast region.



“Particulate matter is a leading environmental factor in the global burden of disease, with climate-driven wildfires being a major source,” said Professor Jose Guillermo "Memo" Cedeño Laurent. “In the U.S., climate change-driven wildfires are reversing decade-long improvements in ambient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/twenty-years-of-air-quality-improvement-erased-by-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air quality</a>.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfires-unleash-toxic-chemicals">Wildfires unleash toxic chemicals </h2>



The findings of the study are momentous, to say the least. The researchers used advanced physicochemical analysis to discover that the particulate matter transferred by these wildfires is packed with high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) -<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-may-trigger-lung-cancer-in-non-smokers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer-causing</a> organic compounds.



These toxic substances, especially during the peak of the incident on June 7, were found in concentrations nearly ten times larger than the national air quality standards.



“We found very large concentrations of ultrafine and fine particulate matter during the peak of this wildfire, surpassing almost 10 times the national air quality standards and any previous record in more than five decades of air quality monitoring in the U.S. Northeast,” said Cedeño Laurent.



Study senior author Professor Philip Demokritou emphasized the gravity of these findings: “Such small particles have the ability to penetrate deep in the lung and can cause adverse health effects, as recently reported in the New York City area by epidemiological studies.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-invisible-threats-of-wildfires">Invisible threats of wildfires</h2>



Particulate matter is no ordinary pollution. The researchers confirmed that these particles have the capability to infiltrate deep into the lungs, causing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-smoke-is-an-underestimated-threat-to-public-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adverse health effects</a>.



In fact, the study showed that a 72-hour exposure to particulate matter (PM10) resulted in more than 9 micrograms of particles being deposited in the lungs.



This high concentration of ultrafine particles and their substantial PAH content are now guiding several ongoing mechanistic studies.



“Our findings on the extremely high concentrations of ultrafine particles and their significant PAH content are proving to be invaluable in guiding several ongoing mechanistic studies at NAMC,” noted Cedeño Laurent.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-effects-of-particulate-matter">Unraveling the effects of particulate matter</h2>



The experts are not stopping at identifying the presence of these particles; they are delving into their impact on various organs. Ongoing studies are investigating the effects on the lungs, heart, brain, and reproductive system.



Reynold Panettieri and Joseph Jude at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Bruce Levy and Yohannes Tesfaigzi at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston are investigating the effects of particulate matter on the lungs.



Studies on the heart impacts are being led by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s cardiovascular program, while the brain impacts are being analyzed by David Leong at the National University of Singapore.



Furthermore, Shuo Xiao and Andrew Gow at the Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy are studying the effects of these pollutants on the reproductive system.



“Findings will advance our understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of wildfire smoke and its impact on human health,” noted Cedeño Laurent.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-need-for-new-air-quality-strategies">Urgent need for new air quality strategies</h2>



The researchers believe that their data highlights the need for further investigation into the physical and chemical processes of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-from-farming-and-wildfires-is-more-likely-to-cause-dementia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfire-related air pollution</a> compared to non-wildfire pollution.



This will enable public health assessors to evaluate risks better and develop strategies to mitigate these risks for communities, especially those already compromised by air pollution.



“Results from our study can be used by public health assessors to evaluate risk and develop strategies to help our communities, especially those in areas already compromised by air pollution to adapt to the increasing wildfire phenomena," said Demokritou.



Additionally, the researchers noted that their results offer novel insights into the evolving composition of particulate matter.



The analysis of the particulate matter’s optical properties will be featured in a companion study led by Georgios Kelesidis, a Rutgers School of Public Health affiliate. The research will examine the effect that particulate matter from wildfires has on the Earth’s temperature and its further influence on climate change in densely populated cities.

As we stagger under a blazing sun, racing towards unbeaten high temperatures, not everyone is aware of or understands the symptoms of heat-related illnesses or knows where to find a cooling center for relief.



With the increasing connection between scorching heat and climate change, it is crucial to arm ourselves with knowledge and resources. 



The Annenberg Public Policy Center (<a href="https://www.annenbergpublicpolicycenter.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">APPC</a>) from the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pennsylvania</a> has been working tirelessly to fill this knowledge gap.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-temperatures-continue-to-rise">Temperatures continue to rise</h2>



Powered by NASA data, the APPC reveals that a record-shattering day took place on July 22, 2024, that could potentially mark July as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-earths-hottest-day-ever-was-recorded-on-july-22-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hottest month ever witnessed</a>.



The mid-July survey sheds light on startling insights about public awareness, or the lack thereof, regarding heat-related illness and cooling center locations.



A major chunk of people, precisely 67%, reported not knowing the whereabouts of their nearest cooling center. The need for improved public awareness, especially among the most vulnerable, cannot be overstated. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closer-look-at-cooling-centers">Closer look at cooling centers</h2>



Cooling centers, such as libraries, community and senior centers, and schools, serve as a haven of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/feeling-the-heat-rising-temperatures-push-the-limits-of-the-human-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">relief during extremely hot days</a>. 



Despite city governments' efforts to publicize these locations, the APPC's survey reveals a significant knowledge gap.



Interestingly, the survey also shows a sharp rise in public awareness linking climate change to an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, respiratory diseases, and insect-borne diseases. 



From November 2023 to the present, there has been a significant uptick in this awareness, with 67% of respondents now holding this view, compared to 58% previously.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-signs-of-heat-related-illness">Signs of heat-related illness</h2>



Although public awareness about cooling centers is lacking, most people are aware of three <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/billions-of-people-endured-an-extra-month-of-extreme-heat-in-the-past-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">telling signs</a> of heat-related illnesses. They include dizziness (89%), nausea (83%), and hot, red, dry, or damp skin (72%).



Looking at the bigger picture, 58% of the survey's respondents believe people in their community are more prone to heat stroke caused by extreme heat waves in the coming decade. 



This is a significant increase from the November 2023 survey, which recorded just over half (52%) holding this view.



In contrast, only a meager 30% recognize that a pregnant person in the U.S. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-reality-extreme-heat-worsens-cognitive-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exposed to extreme heat</a> is more likely to deliver their baby prematurely. This is a crucial piece of information that needs broader dissemination.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cooling-centers-and-heat-related-illness">Cooling centers and heat-related illness</h2>



The APPC's study also indicates a broad awareness among respondents that heat-related deaths are most common among older adults, aged 65 or older. 



Nearly all respondents (92%) also know that drinking water is better for preventing heat-related illnesses than drinking sugary drinks.



This treasure trove of information comes from the 20th wave of a nationally representative panel of 1,496 U.S. adults, first empaneled in April 2021 and conducted for the APPC by SSRS, an independent market research company. 



The APPC's team, now three years into tracking American public's knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warmer-temperatures-directly-linked-to-severe-vision-impairment-in-older-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">critical health issues</a>, continues its tireless work on this knowledge survey panel.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-awareness">Importance of awareness</h2>



Education plays a pivotal role in enhancing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-attribute-extreme-heat-and-wildfires-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">public awareness</a> about heat-related illnesses and the associated risks. 



Schools, community organizations, and local governments can implement educational campaigns to inform individuals about the symptoms of heat-induced health issues and the importance of staying hydrated. 



Workshops, flyers, and social media campaigns can serve as effective tools in this initiative, ensuring that vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and outdoor workers, receive critical information about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-temperature-threshold-can-the-human-body-handle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat safety</a>.



Establishing clear communication channels for sharing updates about heat advisories and cooling centers will also foster a more informed community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community-engagement-initiatives">Community engagement initiatives</h2>



To bridge the awareness gap highlighted by the APPC survey, communities can launch engagement initiatives that encourage action and collaboration. 



“Communities must do a better job of making the public, especially the most vulnerable, aware of these centers,” said Ken Winneg, managing director of survey research at APPC.



Partnering with local businesses and healthcare providers, community leaders can organize outreach programs that provide resources and support during heat waves. 



Events such as "Cooling Center Days," where community members are invited to visit cooling centers and learn about heat safety, can foster a proactive approach to combating heat-related illnesses. 



Additionally, trainings for staff at local institutions can equip them to assist individuals in distress, ensuring that communities are prepared to face extreme heat together.

AI is driving a transformation in climate-conscious farming, particularly in the livestock sector, where reducing emissions is critical.&nbsp;



In 2020, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-carbon-footprint-urban-farms-and-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agricultural activities</a> were responsible for releasing 16 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, with cattle-related meat and milk production contributing around 3.8 billion tons.



Increasing the efficiency and output of cattle grazing without enlarging its environmental footprint has become an essential goal in emission reduction.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-innovative-ai-approaches-in-farming">Innovative AI approaches in farming</h2>



In a comprehensive research paper titled "Pixels to pasture: Using machine learning and multispectral remote sensing to predict biomass and nutrient quality in tropical grasslands," a team of dedicated researchers from the <a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Glasgow</a> and the <a href="https://alliancebioversityciat.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT</a> offers a unique approach. 



This involves the use of information from satellites and predictive modeling to assess grazing pastures both in terms of quantity (biomass) and quality (protein, digestibility, and ash content).



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-satellites-for-farming">AI and satellites for farming</h2>



According to plant eco-physiologist Juan Andrés Cardoso Arango, evaluating all the factors determining pasture quantity and quality has been traditionally challenging.&nbsp;



He explains that the use of a small drone could only cover nine hectares at best, and handheld tools would cover even less.&nbsp;



This is where the research team's "scale-neutral" system shines. It is capable of <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/satellite-data-helps-prevent-excessive-irrigation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gathering data via satellite</a> over multiple square kilometers at a time, yet suitable for a farmer with just one-hectare of land.



The system leverages freely available satellite imagery databases and technological advances in AI processing - considerably accelerating the analysis speed. 



"When I started in 2018, nobody knew about machine learning, now you can have this information faster than before," noted Arango.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-at-the-helm">AI at the helm</h2>



Diana María Gutiérrez Zapata, a senior research associate and data analysis specialist, points out that predicting pasture productivity and quality using remote sensing has always been difficult due to numerous influencing factors and data restrictions.&nbsp;



However, by better characterizing productive systems and capturing more accurate data, there is significant potential to develop high-performance predictive models.



These models, as Zapata explains, can lead to digital tools for strategic decision-making, enabling farmers to optimize pasture management and better manage risks within their production systems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-is-bright">The future is bright</h2>



The team envisions a future where a farmer can easily locate their farm on a platform (similar to Google Maps) and check the quantity and quality of their forage.&nbsp;



Moreover, this system stands to be an invaluable tool in a changing climate, where timely information about expected pasture production or quality is crucial for risk management.



Accelerating the data acquisition process for farmers would not only improve resource utilization but also positively impact the environment by reducing emissions and waste - a step directly aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.



According to Brian Barrett, an associate professor from the University of Glasgow, the ultimate goal is to develop better strategies for estimating available forage resources and how pastures would react under different management and climate scenarios. 



With&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-technology-can-detect-plant-diseases-from-above/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">advanced technology</a>&nbsp;like AI and satellite data, the potential to achieve more efficient and profitable farming, as well as enhanced food system sustainability, is very much within reach.

While the integration of AI and satellite technology in farming presents exciting opportunities, it also comes with a unique set of challenges.



One major hurdle is the accessibility and cost of technology for small-scale farmers who may lack the resources to adopt these innovations. Additionally, there is a need for training and education to help farmers effectively utilize AI tools and interpret data accurately. 



Moreover, concerns around data privacy and ownership in agricultural practices must be addressed to foster trust among farmers. 



As the industry evolves, collaboration among stakeholders will be essential to ensure that the benefits of AI-driven solutions are broadly shared and that challenges are collectively tackled.

Antarctica, the land of ice and snow, holds more life than you might imagine. A recent study that mapped plant life across the continent for the first time unveils surprising insights.



Covering mosses, lichens, and algae, the research uncovers a wealth of greenery expanding even in areas previously believed to be barren. These findings are set to steer conservation initiatives in the region, taking them to new frontiers.



The high-tech survey of Antarctica's plant life involved the use of a satellite belonging to the European Space Agency (<a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>).



Together with data from several summer seasons' worth of field measurements, the survey discovered almost 45 square <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-is-experiencing-rapid-plant-growth-concerning-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">kilometers of vegetation</a>.



That's approximately equivalent to triple the size of Lake Windermere in the UK's Lake District.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-life-of-antarctica">Plant life of Antarctica</h2>



A group of international researchers discovered that over 80% of the vegetation discovered thrives in the Antarctic Peninsula and neighboring islands.



Despite the extensive exploration, the team found that the vegetation accounts for a minuscule 0.12 percent of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-unleash-invasive-species-into-unexpected-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctica’s non-icy area</a>. 



This highlights the need for focused monitoring of areas abundant in vegetation, as these are inadequately shielded by the existing Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) system, according to experts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-silent-warriors-of-antarctica">Silent warriors of Antarctica</h2>



Plant life in Antarctica, mainly mosses and lichens, has developed remarkable adaptations to withstand the region's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-low-antarctic-sea-ice-and-rapid-melting-pace-stuns-climate-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">harsh polar conditions</a>. 



Each plant serves a critical function in the recycling of carbon and nutrients at a local level. Before this study, the extent and distribution of these resilient greens across the continent were largely uncharted.



The exceptional environmental sensitivity of Antarctica’s flora can serve as a reliable measure of regional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-fish-are-increasingly-threatened-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. 



Monitoring these plants within the untouched landscapes of Antarctica might offer insights on the response of similar vegetation in other fragile regions around the world, like some areas of the Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-mosses-and-lichens">Understanding mosses and lichens</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/plant-encyclopedia/bryophytes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mosses</a> and lichens are tough, tiny organisms that make a big difference in the world. Mosses are small and soft. They usually grow in thick, green patches in damp or shady spots. 



Without roots, they soak up water and nutrients directly through their leaves. Mosses help keep the soil in place, hold moisture, and create homes for small creatures.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hundreds-of-plant-and-lichen-species-are-overlooked-victims-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lichens</a> are a bit different. They are a team made up of a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. The fungus offers support and shelter, while the algae or cyanobacteria make food through photosynthesis. 



This teamwork lets lichens survive in some of the harshest places on Earth, like icy tundras or bare rock surfaces. Lichens also help turn rocks into soil and provide food for various animals.



Both mosses and lichens are vital for the health of ecosystems, especially in tough environments where few other plants can live.

"Our continent-wide map reveals crucial details about vegetation in remote, seldom-visited areas," said Charlotte Walshaw, a PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh's <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/geosciences" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of GeoSciences</a>. 



"This will significantly enhance our understanding of vegetation distribution across the continent and the factors that shape it," she concluded.



"Lichens and mosses in Antarctica face the planet's harshest conditions every day. Only the toughest organisms survive there," said Dr. Claudia Colesie, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh's School of GeoSciences. "With this knowledge, we can now focus on targeted conservation efforts to protect their future."



“Remote sensing approaches such as this are low impact methods to study Antarctica’s fragile ecosystem as well as monitor changes to its vegetation in the future,” noted Dr Andrew Gray from the <a href="https://www.nina.no/english/Home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian Institute for Nature Research</a>, who jointly led the study.

"Cities are vulnerable to droughts and heatwaves due to the decline in permeable green spaces and the emergence of heat islands," wrote the study authors. 



"To tackle these environmental challenges, many cities adopted ambitious tree-planting initiatives. However, tree tolerance to climate extremes is overlooked even though physiological and growth limitations jeopardize ecosystem services provision."



Notably, the researchers responsible for this vital discovery hail from the <a href="https://www5.usp.br/english/institutional/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of São Paulo</a>’s Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA-USP). In response to this threat, the Brazilian government launched the Resilient Green Cities program on World Environment Day.



This forward-thinking program focuses on fostering sustainable practices and integrating policies to enhance the value of ecosystem services provided by urban green spaces, ultimately aiming to create a more resilient and thriving urban ecosystem for generations to come.

The study emphasizes the need for city planning to include resilient species in the urban plant cover, ensuring that these plants can adapt and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-in-dry-landscapes-have-surprising-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thrive</a> under challenging environmental conditions.



The research adds significant value to urban biodiversity, with the resilient Tipuana tree standing as a prime model of adaptability and robustness.



Furthermore, the team is actively exploring other resilient native species to further diversify and enrich the city's ecological framework.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-the-resilient-tipuana-tree">The power of the resilient Tipuana tree</h2>



Originally from Bolivia and northern Argentina, the Tipuana tree has become a common sight in São Paulo and other parts of the world, including North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia. 



The tree's resilience, which has been present for over a century, is now being recognized as a significant asset in building climate resilience.



In their research, the scientists analyzed growth rings in street and park trees, focusing on stable carbon isotopes that reflect processes relating to the carbon cycle. Their findings showed an increase in these isotopes during the drought, boosting the growth of the Tipuana trees.



"Having Tipuana trees in the city is a significant advantage," said Locosselli. However, he said it remains to be seen whether the species will be able to maintain its tolerance of water stress if a sequence of extreme events occurs.



The study opens new possibilities in our global fight against climate change, offering a promising look into nature-based solutions. 



Through intentional and strategic urban planning, our cities can become resilient sanctuaries in the face of increasing weather extremities.

Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles.

Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
