Sediment hidden under ice for millennia is seeing daylight again as glaciers melt. At first, those fresh minerals mop up carbon dioxide. But over time, they switch roles and start leaking gases that trap heat in the air.



<a href="https://geology.ufl.edu/directory/dr-jonathan-martin/">Jonathan Martin</a>’s University of Florida team, along with colleagues from the <a href="https://www.umaryland.edu/">University of Maryland</a> traced that flip in Kobbefjord, Greenland. 



Researchers compared young glacial meltwater with soil water that had been exposed for about 10,000 years. Their <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-025-02404-z">work</a> shows why every newly uncovered valley enters a long, slow countdown from sink to source.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-after-glaciers-melt-methane-rises">After glaciers melt, methane rises</h2>



Lead author <a href="https://www.umces.edu/andrea-pain">Andrea Pain</a> and co‑author <a href="https://geology.ufl.edu/directory/dr-jonathan-martin/">Jonathan Martin</a> sampled streams that draw melt straight from small glaciers and others fed by seeps through mature tundra soils. 



The two waters could be told apart by their oxygen isotopes and by how clear they were. Meltwater ran chalky with rock flour, while seep water ran tea‑colored from dissolved organics.



“Our central hypothesis was that the transfer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/">greenhouse gases</a> between landscapes and the atmosphere has changed since the Last Glacial Maximum about 15,000 years ago,” said Martin.



Field data upheld that hunch, showing glacial streams still scrubbing carbon dioxide while older soils were busy making methane.



Freshly ground carbonates and silicates react with carbonic acid in cold meltwater, locking up carbon as bicarbonate. 



Once microbes colonize the maturing soil, they chew on buried plant matter and turn it into methane through <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/methanogenesis">methanogenesis</a>, reversing the sign of the gas ledger.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glacier-melt-reshapes-gas-timing">Glacier melt reshapes gas timing</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-new-source-of-methane-emissions-discovered-glacial-fracking-arctic/">Methane</a> packs a bigger punch than carbon dioxide, trapping about 28 times more heat over a century. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK532922/">Nitrous oxide</a>, the third‑place greenhouse gas, is even fiercer, with a global warming potential of 273 on the same scale.



Those numbers mean that a late rise in methane can wipe out the early carbon‑dioxide savings that bare sediment briefly earns. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/">Climate models</a> trying to look centuries ahead need that timing baked in, or they risk undercounting the payback later in the game.



Martin’s crew found that the window of net uptake might last only a few centuries in the high Arctic. That’s just a blink compared to the ten‑thousand‑year age of most post‑ice soils. That insight adds a moving target to projections of future warming.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-greenland-s-valley-tells-all">Greenland’s valley tells all</h2>



Kobbefjord lies about six miles southwest of Nuuk and covers roughly 12 square miles. Only 1.7 percent of the watershed still holds glacier ice, yet the lingering meltwater strongly flavors the downstream chemistry.



During a clear July stretch, meltwater from nearby glaciers ruled the flow, and carbon dioxide in the main channel stayed close to atmospheric equilibrium. 



A week later, cloudier weather cut the glacier melt pulse; seep water took over, and methane levels at the outlet jumped more than fourfold.



That flip also showed up in the strontium isotope gap between water and bedload sediment, a geochemical clock for weathering progress. 



Values near zero in seep streams told of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-and-ice-may-reveal-where-rare-earth-elements-are-hiding/">minerals</a> already well chewed, while high values in the icy headwaters marked rock that had barely started to dissolve.



Field calculations revealed a net sink of 64 millimoles of carbon dioxide equivalents per second during the melt‑dominated period. 



Just days later, the same outlet turned into a 44-millimole-per-second source as methane outran the shrinking weathering sink.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reading-the-gases">Reading the gases</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-study-provides-answers-to-how-coral-reefs-can-survive-climate-change/">Carbonic acid weathering</a> of carbonates and silicates pulls carbon from the air, but sulfuric acid weathering of carbonates can add it back.



The balance between those paths hinges on how much fresh mineral surface and dissolved organic carbon each water source carries.



Runoff from glaciers had lower organic carbon, yet it was more labile, fueling acid generation that sped up mineral reactions. 



Seep water, richer in tougher humic carbon, fostered anaerobic pockets where methane‑making microbes thrived.



The study underscores that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-fossil-tundra-discovery-stuns-and-worries-scientists-sea-level-rise/">melting ice</a> and deglaciation is not a single event but a sequence of chemical stages. Understanding which stage a watershed occupies helps predict whether it will cool or warm the planet in any given decade.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-builds-after-glacier-melt">Warming builds after glacier melt</h2>



Pain and Martin now plan to test nitrous oxide dynamics in the same valley, because that gas can warm the air <a href="https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/nitrous-oxide-emissions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">200 times faster</a> than carbon dioxide if it escapes.



Preliminary lab work hints that nitrous oxide might peak earlier than methane, suggesting a still more complex hand‑off among the three gases.



Other researchers are already noticing similar trends elsewhere: on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-the-roof-of-the-world-keeps-rising-over-time/">Tibetan Plateau</a>, lakes that no longer receive melt from glaciers emit about three times more methane than glacier‑fed lakes.



As more high‑altitude or high‑latitude basins lose ice input, those findings imply a widespread tilt toward methane dominance.



Martin cautions that rapid, human‑driven warming could briefly revive the negative feedback by boosting meltwater flow. 



Yet the reprieve would be short‑lived. Once the last ice patches vanish, soils everywhere will settle into the methane‑rich phase that the Kobbefjord team measured.

Baby kangaroo feces could provide an unlikely solution to cow-produced methane, according to a new study from <a href="https://wsu.edu/">Washington State University</a>.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/video/wetlands-are-a-major-source-of-methane-emissions/">Methane</a> is the second largest greenhouse gas contributor and is 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide. More than half of the methane released into the atmosphere is thought to come from the agricultural sector. Ruminant animals, such as cattle and goats, are the most significant contributors.



Using a cow stomach simulator, the researchers discovered that methane production can be inhibited by a microbial culture developed from baby kangaroo feces.



“Methane emissions from cows are a major contributor to greenhouse gases, and at the same time, people like to eat red meat,” said study co-author Birgitte Ahring.



To reduce methane, researchers have tried changing cows’ diets and developing vaccines, but there are too many varieties of the methane-producing bacteria. These interventions can also negatively affect biological processes.



The WSU researchers had previously designed an artificial rumen, the largest stomach compartment, to simulate cow digestion. Ahring said that among the enzymes that are able to break down natural materials, rumens have “amazing abilities."



Ahring learned that kangaroos have acetic acid-producing, instead of methane-producing, bacteria in their foregut. The specialized acetic acid-producing process only occurred in baby kangaroos – not in adults. Unlike methane, acetic acid benefits cows by supporting muscle growth.&nbsp;



After reducing the methane-producing bacteria in their reactor with a specialized chemical, the acetic acid bacteria were able to replace the methane-producing microbes for several months.



“It is a very good culture. I have no doubt it is promising,” Ahring said. “It could be really interesting to see if that culture could run for an extended period of time, so we would only have to inhibit the methane production from time to time. Then, it could actually be a practice.”

The sale of indoor houseplants soared during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-risk-linked-to-specific-environmental-pollutants/">COVID-19</a> pandemic as people were confined to their homes and needed to remind themselves of the beauty of nature. Green spaces are known to be beneficial to mental and physical health, and confer a sense of wellbeing, and people love to bring a bit of that greenness into their homes by means of attractive plants in pots. Interestingly, many of the most popular pot plants have strange roots that grow out of their stems and seem to live comfortably in the air, rather than in the pot’s soil.&nbsp;



These are known as aerial roots, and a new study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/pce.14568">Plant, Cell &amp; Environment</a> suggests that they are capable of elevating the health of our indoor plants, as long as we pay them some attention. Just like underground roots, aerial roots can absorb nutrients and water, although the relative importance of this to the plant had not been investigated.&nbsp;



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/">University of Nottingham</a> decided to grow houseplants that have both aerial roots and roots in the soil, and to compare the uptake of nitrogen by the two different types of roots. Nitrogen is used for forming proteins and so is essential for healthy plant growth.



“Houseplants are really important for improving air quality and bring mental health benefits, but many people struggle to know the best way to look after them. The main focus is usually on feeding them in the soil with regular watering and plant food, but what many people don’t know is that many plant varieties have roots along the external stems that need our attention too," said Dr. Amanda Rasmussen, who led the study. "We wanted to test if these roots do take up nutrients and if so, find out exactly how much they can take up to improve the health of the plants.”



The researchers used three different species of plants that are commonly kept in pots in homes and that have aerial and below-ground roots: Anthurium andreanum, also known as flamingo flower; Epipremnum aureum or devil’s ivy;&nbsp;and&nbsp;Philodendron scandens or sweetheart plant.&nbsp;They grew these plants in custom-made growth chambers under conditions of high humidity and ambient humidity for three months. Both aerial roots and soil-formed roots were fed mixtures of the nitrogen-containing compounds known as nitrate, ammonium and glycine, and growth and physiology parameters were measured weekly.



The results showed that aerial roots were consistently better at taking up nitrogen than soil roots, and it didn’t matter which form the nitrogen was in. All three forms of nitrogen were absorbed more readily by the aerial roots. This was contrary to expectations as the aerial roots are thicker than the soil roots and therefore have a smaller surface area to volume ratio. The researchers had expected the thin soil roots to be better adapted to absorbing nitrogen.&nbsp;



The experts had also expected that the plants would absorb nitrogen in organic form (ammonium and glycine) in preference to nitrogen in inorganic nitrate form. But the plants absorbed all three forms of nitrogen equally well. In addition, all three species of plants grew better in high humidity conditions, with aerial roots showing the greatest increase in biomass.&nbsp;



“The results of this study are really exciting as they could transform the way we feed certain types of plants and help us to keep them healthy and thriving! A simple spray with water and some plant food to the aerial roots may help optimize the amount of nutrients the plant gets and will ensure we can enjoy them to their fullest for many years," said Dr. Rasmussen.



The authors state that there is a need for future studies involving more different plant species and a wider range of nutrients. They also feel that the growth of plants with aerial roots can be enhanced by the use of misting and the addition of foliar applications of fertilizers that coat the aerial roots. Instead of ignoring these strange structures that sometimes appear to grow upwards instead of downwards into the soil, plant owners would do well to pay attention to their needs, thereby ensuring healthy and long-lived plants.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thwaites-glacier-underground-lakes/">Thwaites Glacier</a> is one of the fastest changing glaciers in Antarctica, with its grounding zone - the point where it meets the seafloor – retreating 14 kilometers since the 1990s. Since much of this glacier’s ice sheet lies below the sea level and is susceptible to rapid, irreversible loss, global sea levels could rise by over half a meter within centuries if melting continues at such rates.



However, according to two new recent studies published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>, although melting has increased beneath the floating ice shelf, the current rate of melting is slower than several computer models have estimated.&nbsp;



By collecting data from ocean measurements through deep boreholes at six different locations underneath the ice shelf over a nine-month period, a team of researchers led by the <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/">British Antarctic Survey</a> (BAS) and <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/">Cornell University</a> has found that the rapid retreat of this glacier is driven by different processes under the ice shelf. According to the scientists, while melting beneath much of the ice shelf is weaker than expected, melting in cracks and crevices is much faster.



“Our results are a surprise but the glacier is still in trouble,” said Peter Davis, an oceanographer at BAS and lead author of <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05586-0">one of the studies</a>. “If an ice shelf and a glacier is in balance, the ice coming off the continent will match the amount of ice being lost through melting and iceberg calving. What we have found is that despite small amounts of melting there is still rapid glacier retreat, so it seems that it doesn’t take a lot to push the glacier out of balance.”



Thus, although the vertical melting along the base of the ice shelf was less than expected, melting along sloped ice in cracks and terraces is much higher and could be a major factor in ice loss across this massive glacier, particularly as large rifts are progressing along the ice shelf and may become the primary trigger for ice shelf collapse.



“These new ways of observing the glacier allow us to understand that it’s not just how much melting is happening, but&nbsp;how&nbsp;and&nbsp;where&nbsp;it is happening that matters in these very warm parts of Antarctica. We see crevasses, and probably terraces, across warming glaciers like Thwaites.&nbsp;Warm water is getting into the cracks, helping wear down the glacier at its weakest points,” explained Britney Schmidt, an associate professor of Planetary Science at Cornell and lead author of the <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05691-0">second study</a>.&nbsp;



“Our results demonstrate that the canonical model of ice-shelf basal melting used to generate sea-level projections cannot reproduce observed melt rates beneath this critically important glacier, and that rapid and possibly unstable grounding-line retreat may be associated with relatively modest basal melt rates,” the experts concluded.

In a new study published by <a href="https://global.oup.com/">Oxford University Press</a>, experts describe how television shows can ultimately benefit the planet. The research confirms that nature documentaries inspire people to become interested in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-pass-down-memories-to-help-offspring-survive/">plants</a>, and to seek out more information about them.&nbsp;



"Plants underpin life on Earth and are essential to human existence. Alarmingly, almost 40% of plant species are under threat of extinction, with plants that are not directly useful to humans being particularly vulnerable," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;



"Plant diversity and its untapped resources require urgent protection to safeguard our future, but conservation initiatives are biased towards mammals and birds. Plant awareness disparity, formerly known as plant blindness, describes our tendency to ignore plant life and has been suggested to play a crucial role in the bias against funding and support for plant conservation programs."



According to the researchers, previous studies suggest that nature documentaries - such as Planet Earth II, Seven Worlds, and One Planet - have made viewers more aware of the featured animal species. "Here, we investigated whether the plant-focused popular BBC show Green Planet had a similar effect for plants and stimulated audience engagement for information after the broadcast."



Green Planet, a 2022 documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough, was watched by nearly five million people in the United Kingdom. The film featured a diverse range of plant species from across the globe.&nbsp;



To investigate whether Green Planet inspired plant awareness among viewers, the experts looked at online behavior around the time of the broadcast. In particular, they analyzed Google search engine and Wikipedia activities.



The study revealed that Green Planet had a substantial impact on the viewers’ interest in the plant species that were highlighted in the film.&nbsp;



Google Trends showed that during the week after the broadcast of the relevant episode,&nbsp; 28 percent of search terms represented plants mentioned in the BBC documentary. In addition, more than 31 percent of the Wikipedia pages related to plants on Green Planet had an increase in the number of visits during the week after the species were featured.&nbsp;



“I think that increasing public awareness of plants is essential and fascinating," said study lead author Joanna Kacprzyk. “In this study, we show that nature documentaries can increase plant awareness among the audience. Our results also suggest that the viewers found certain plant species particularly captivating. These plants could be used for promoting plant conservation efforts and counteracting the alarming loss of plant biodiversity.“

By examining data spanning nine billions of years, a team of scientists led by the&nbsp;<a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa</a> has found the first observational evidence that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-closest-black-hole-has-been-discovered/">black holes</a> contain cores of dark energy, a mysterious force driving the accelerating expansion of the universe. Thus, instead of dark energy being spread out across spacetime, as many scientists have previously assumed, the new findings suggest that this energy was created and remains inside the (increasingly larger) black holes that formed in the crushing forces of collapsing stars.



The existence of dark energy was first proposed in the 1990s when investigations of distant stars revealed that the expansion of the universe was accelerating. This strange phenomenon – given that gravity should be slowing the universe’s expansion – made scientists ponder what could drive the expansion faster and led them to postulate dark energy as an unknown, mysterious force working against gravity. However, its precise nature and origins have not yet been clearly understood. Now, by connecting this force to the evolution of black holes over extended periods of time, the researchers have managed to shed new light on the nature of our universe.&nbsp;



“We’re really saying two things at once: that there’s evidence the typical black hole solutions don’t work for you on a long, long timescale, and we have the first proposed astrophysical source for dark energy,'” said lead author Duncan Farrah, an astrophysicist at Hawai’i.



“What that means, though, is not that other people haven’t proposed sources for dark energy, but this is the first observational paper where we’re not adding anything new to the universe as a source for dark energy: black holes in Einstein’s theory of gravity are the dark energy.”



By comparing black hole masses in young galaxies, where stars are still forming, with black holes masses in old, so-called “dormant galaxies,” where no more stars are currently born, the scientists discovered that black holes in dormant galaxies are between seven to 20 times larger than expected, suggesting that black holes too are growing as the universe expands.



“Here’s a toy analogy. You can think of a coupled black hole like a rubber band, being stretched along with the universe as it expands,” explained co-author Kevin Croker, a cosmologist at Hawai’i. “As it stretches, its energy increases. Einstein’s&nbsp;E = mc2&nbsp;tells you that mass and energy are proportional, so the black hole mass increases, too.”



“The importance of this work is that it’s taken the theories about black holes with dark energy cores and linked them for the first time to tangible observations of the universe,” concluded co-author Chris Pearson, an astronomer at the research institute <a href="https://www.ralspace.stfc.ac.uk/Pages/home.aspx">RAL&nbsp;Space</a>&nbsp;in Oxfordshire. “These black holes are expected to grow in mass as the universe expands.”&nbsp;



The findings are synthetized in two articles published in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/acac2e">The Astrophysical Journal</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/acb704">The Astrophysical Journal Letters</a>.

Dark energy is created and contained in black holes

We cannot know exactly how Earth’s climate was in the past, nor how it will be in the future. However, it is very important for scientists to try and predict what changes may take place so that policy- and decision-makers can develop ways to reduce and mitigate against the destructive effects of a warming planet.&nbsp;



Scientists make use of climate system models to get a better idea of how weather patterns and climatic factors may change in the future. These are computer simulations that use real data on factors that drive the climate today to predict how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-is-becoming-more-difficult-to-predict/">weather</a> patterns may change under different conditions, such as increases in the levels of greenhouse gases.&nbsp;



Before using a climate model to predict what may happen in future, it is important that its accuracy in identifying past climatic conditions is assessed. This is done by comparing the model’s simulated conditions with climatic data derived from other sources, such as tree rings or pollen, or the stable isotope ratios in lake and ocean sediments or ice cores. These sources of data are known as proxies since they reflect past climatic conditions indirectly.&nbsp;



Interestingly, when climatic models are used to predict the Earth’s temperature during the Holocene Period (the past 12,000 years), the predictions disagree with the evidence obtained from proxy sources. The paleo-environmental proxy data, including evidence from ocean and lake sediments, indicate that temperature peaked at 6,500 years ago and then gradually cooled down until humans started burning fossil fuels around 200 years ago. In contrast, the climate models generally show global average temperatures increasing gradually throughout the Holocene Period.



The disagreement on climatic conditions during this time period is known as the Holocene temperature conundrum. A new review article, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41586-022-05536-w">Nature</a>, has now addressed this conflict between the findings of climate models and proxy evidence by analyzing a large quantity of available data on global temperature from the past 12,000 years.&nbsp;



The researchers included lead author Darrell Kaufman, a Regents’ professor in the School of Earth and Sustainability at <a href="https://nau.edu/">Northern Arizona University</a>, and University of Arizona postdoctoral researcher Ellie Broadman, a co-author who worked on the study while earning her Ph.D. at NAU. The team aimed to identify whether the global average temperature 6,500 years ago was warmer, as indicated by proxy evidence, or colder, as simulated by models, than the temperature in the late 19th&nbsp;century, when the Industrial Revolution led to a significant increase in human-caused warming.



This comprehensive and systematic assessment concludes that the global average temperature 6,500 years ago was likely warmer and was followed by a multi-millennial cooling trend that ended in the 1800s. This finding supports the data derived from numerous proxy sources, rather than the conclusions derived from current climate models. However, the authors cautioned that uncertainty still exists, despite recent studies that have claimed to have resolved the conundrum.



“Quantifying the average temperature of the earth during the past, when some places were warming while others were cooling, is challenging, and more research is needed to firmly resolve the conundrum,” Kaufman said.&nbsp;



“But tracing changes in global average temperature is important because it’s the same metric used to gauge the march of human-caused warming and to identify internationally negotiated targets to limit it. In particular, our review revealed how surprisingly little we know about slow-moving climate variability, including forces now set into motion by humans, that will play out as sea level rises and permafrost thaws over coming millennia.”



We know more about the climate of the Holocene, which began after the last major ice age ended, 12,000 years ago, than any other multi-millennial period. There are published studies from a variety of natural archives that store information about historical changes that occurred in the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere and on land; studies that look at the forces that drove past climate changes, such as Earth’s orbit, solar irradiance, volcanic eruptions and greenhouse gases; and climate model simulations that translate those forces into changing global temperatures. All these types of studies were included in this review.



If the researchers are correct, and the proxy data gives a more accurate reflection of global temperature changes during this time, this implies deficiencies in the models and casts uncertainty on their use to forecast climatic conditions in the future. In particular, this would challenge climate scientists’ understanding of factors that naturally drive climate changes and feedbacks, and that are used in the development of climate models.&nbsp;



If the researchers are incorrect, then scientists need to improve their understanding of the way in which proxy records indicate past temperature information, and further develop analytical tools to capture these trends on a global scale.



What is a certainty, however, is that the change in global average temperature in the past 6,500 years, be it upwards or downwards, has been gradual and has been very small – less than 1oC (1.8oF). This is less than the warming already measured in the last 100 years alone, most of which is related to human activities.&nbsp;



Attempting to resolve the Holocene global temperature conundrum has been a priority for climate scientists in the last decade; Broadman remembers reading the initial paper on this topic when she started her Ph.D. in 2016. All the studies since then have added to the understanding of this issue. However, it is still not clear what factors might be driving a cooling climate in the past 6,500 years when levels of atmospheric greenhouse gases were slowly increasing and ice sheets were slowly retreating – both factors that would be expected to cause warming, not cooling.



The current review certainly highlights the fact that we don’t yet know the solution to this conundrum.



“One interesting takeaway is that our findings demonstrate the impact that regional&nbsp;changes can have on&nbsp;global&nbsp;average temperature. Environmental changes in some regions of the Earth, like declining Arctic sea ice or changing vegetation cover in what are now vast deserts, can cause feedbacks that influence the planet as a whole,” Broadman said.&nbsp;



“With current global warming, we already see some regions changing very quickly. Our work highlights that some of those regional changes and feedbacks are really important to understand and capture in climate models.”



Additionally, Kaufman said, accurately reconstructing the details of past temperature change offers insights into climate’s response to various causes of both natural and anthropogenic climate change. The responses serve as benchmarks to test how well climate models simulate the Earth’s climate system.



“Climate models are the only source of detailed quantitative climate predictions, so their fidelity is critical for planning the most effective strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change,” said Kaufman. “Our review suggests that climate models are underestimating important climate feedbacks that can amplify global warming.”

A new study led by the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> has found that there is a significant lack of awareness among both U.S. and UK populations regarding the possibility and effects of a “nuclear winter” – the potential for long-term environmental and public health consequences from any exchange of nuclear weapons.



According to the experts, detonations from nuclear exchanges would throw vast amounts of debris into the stratosphere, blocking out much of the sun for over a decade, and thus causing global drops in temperature, mass crop failure, and widespread famine. Combined with radiation fall-out, such consequences would lead to the death of millions of people in the wake of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canada-wildfire-smoke-nuclear-war/">nuclear war</a>, including many far outside of any blast zone.



To assess their awareness of such a scenario, the researchers asked 3,000 participants in an online survey (half from the U.S. and half from the UK) to self-report on a sliding scale how much they felt they knew about a nuclear winter, and if they heard about such a possibility from contemporary media/culture, recent academic studies, or Cold War era beliefs and memories.&nbsp;



The analysis revealed that only 3.2 and 7.5 percent of the participants (from UK and US, respectively) were familiar with such a phenomenon from media or culture, 1.6 percent (UK) and 5.2 percent (U.S.) from academic studies, and 5.4 percent (UK) and 9 percent (U.S.) from Cold War memories. In the event of a hypothetical Russian nuclear attack on Ukraine, fewer than one in five participants from both countries supported in-kind retaliation, with men more likely than women to back nuclear reprisal - 20.7 percent (U.S.) and 24.4 percent (UK) of men compared to 14.1 percent (US) and 16.1 percent (UK) of women.



“In 2023 we find ourselves facing a risk of nuclear conflict greater than we’ve seen since the early eighties. Yet there is little in the way of public knowledge or debate of the unimaginably dire long-term consequences of nuclear war for the planet and global populations,” said study lead author Paul Ingram, a senior research associate at University of Cambridge’s <a href="https://www.cser.ac.uk/">Center for the Study of Existential Risk</a> (CSER).



“Ideas of nuclear winter are predominantly a lingering cultural memory, as if it is the stuff of history, rather than a horribly contemporary risk. Of course, it is distressing to consider large-scale catastrophes, but decisions need to account for all potential consequences, to minimize the risk. Any stability within nuclear deterrence is undermined if it is based on decisions that are ignorant of the worst consequences of using nuclear weapons.”&nbsp;



“There is an urgent need for public education within all nuclear-armed states that is informed by the latest research. We need to collectively reduce the temptation that leaders of nuclear-armed states might have to threaten or even use such weapons in support of military operations,” he concluded.



The findings are published in a report on CSER’s <a href="https://www.cser.ac.uk/news/opinion-poll-survey-public-awareness-nuclear-winte/">website</a>.

Risk of nuclear winter underestimated by most people

While coastal populations all over the world are already bracing for rising sea levels, planning for measures to mitigate flooding and other possible damages has been quite difficult. This is because the latest climate projections disagree on how rapidly the world’s largest ice sheets will respond to global warming.&nbsp;



Now, a study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-36051-9">Nature Communications</a> argues that an irreversible loss of the West Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, along with a rapid acceleration of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cause-widespread-impacts-sooner-than-expected/">sea level rise</a>, will be imminent if global temperatures rise more than 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels.



Although melting ice sheets are likely the largest contributor to sea level rise, their behavior has been hardest to predict since the physics governing their temperature-related changes is highly complex.&nbsp;



“Moreover, computer models that simulate the dynamics of the ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica often do not account for the fact that ice sheet melting will affect ocean processes, which, in turn, can feed back onto the ice sheet and the atmosphere,”&nbsp;said study lead author Jun Young Park, a doctoral student in Climate Sciences at the <a href="https://ibsclimate.org/">IBS Center for Climate Physics</a> and the <a href="https://www.pusan.ac.kr/eng/Main.do">Pusan National University</a> in South Korea.



By using a groundbreaking computer model that captures the complex relations among ice sheets, icebergs, ocean, and atmosphere, the scientists discovered that a rapid acceleration of ice sheet melting and sea level rise could only be prevented if the world reaches net zero emissions by 2060.



“If we miss this emission goal, the ice sheets will disintegrate and melt at an accelerated pace, according to our calculations. If we don’t take any action, retreating ice sheets would continue to increase sea level by at least 100 cm within the next 130 years. This would be on top of other contributions, such as the thermal expansion of ocean water,” explained study co-author Axel Timmermann, the director of the IBS Center.



While in previous studies scientists have mainly stressed the importance of subsurface ocean melting, sea ice and atmospheric circulation changes around Antarctica also play major roles in controlling the amount of ice sheet melting and subsequent sea level rise. Thus, more complex earth system models that can capture the interactions between different climate components are urgently needed, along with new observational programs.



“One of the key challenges in simulating ice sheets is that even small-scale processes can play a crucial role in the large-scale response of an ice sheet and for the corresponding sea-level projections. Not only do we have to include the coupling of all components, as we did in our current study, but we also need to simulate the dynamics at the highest possible spatial resolution using some of the fastest supercomputers,”&nbsp;Timmermann concluded.

Rapid acceleration of sea level rise may be unavoidable

The oldest European hedgehog that ever lived has been identified in Denmark. The hedgehog was alive until the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-gives-animals-a-survival-advantage-but-only-to-a-point/">age</a> of 16, which is seven years longer than the previous record holder.



Since the year 2000, hedgehog populations across the UK countryside have declined by at least 50 percent, according to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.&nbsp;



Various projects have been launched to monitor the state of wild populations, including “The Danish Hedgehog Project" led by Dr. Sophie Lund Rasmussen of the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a>. For the 2016 project, citizen scientists were asked to collect any dead hedgehogs they could find.



The goal of the research was to investigate the typical life expectancy of hedgehogs in Denmark. Overall, 697 specimens were collected by more than 400 volunteers.&nbsp;



A subsequent analysis revealed that the oldest hedgehog in the sample was 16 years old - the oldest scientifically documented European hedgehog ever found. In addition, two individuals were found to have lived for 11 and 13 years.&nbsp;



By contrast, the average age of the hedgehogs was only around two years. The researchers determined that 56 percent of the hedgehogs had been killed when crossing roads, 22 percent died at a rehabilitation center, and 22 percent died of natural causes.&nbsp;



"Although we saw a high proportion of individuals dying at the age of one year, our data also showed that if the individuals survived this life stage, they could potentially live to become 16 years old and produce offspring for several years," said Dr. Rasmussen.



"This may be because individual hedgehogs gradually gain more experience as they grow older. If they manage to survive to reach the age of two years or more, they would have likely learned to avoid dangers such as cars and predators."



‘The tendency for males to outlive females is likely caused by the fact that it is simply easier being a male hedgehog. Hedgehogs are not territorial, which means that the males rarely fight. And the females raise their offspring alone."



The researchers tested tissue samples to examine whether inbreeding had a negative impact on the life expectancy of the hedgehogs. The team was surprised to find that this was not the case.&nbsp;



"Sadly, many species of wildlife are in decline, which often results in increased inbreeding, as the decline limits the selection of suitable mates. This study is one of the first thorough investigations of the effect of inbreeding on longevity," said Dr. Rasmussen.



"Our research indicates that if the hedgehogs manage to survive into adulthood, despite their high degree of inbreeding, which may cause several potentially lethal, hereditary conditions, the inbreeding does not reduce their longevity. That is a rather groundbreaking discovery, and very positive news from a conservation perspective."

A new study led by the <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/">University of California, Los Angeles</a> (UCLA) has found that global atmospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-asteroid-ice-age/">dust</a> (microscopic airborne particles from desert dust storms) has a small, yet significant cooling effect on our planet, which has hidden the full amount of warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. According to the experts, the amount of desert dust has grown by 55 percent since the mid-19th century, thus increasing its cooling effect.



While some of the effects of atmospheric dust contribute to global warming, others counteract it - for instance, by scattering sunlight back into space and dissipating high clouds that warm the planet. Overall, the researchers estimate that dust has a cooling effect.



“We show desert dust has increased, and most likely slightly counteracted greenhouse warming, which is missing from current climate models,” said study lead author Jasper Kok, an atmospheric physicist at UCLA. “The increased dust hasn’t caused a whole lot of cooling - the climate models are still close - but our findings imply that greenhouses gases alone could cause even more climate warming than models currently predict.”



Besides its atmospheric interactions with sunlight and cloud cover, when dust falls back on the Earth’s surface, it can darken snow and ice, making them absorb more heat. In addition, dust also cools the planet by depositing nutrients such as phosphorous or iron into the oceans, which support the growth of phytoplankton that absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere, thereby causing a net cooling effect.



“We want climate projections to be as accurate as possible, and this dust increase could have masked up to eight percent of the greenhouse warming,” Kok explained. “By adding the increase in desert dust, which accounts for over half of the atmosphere’s mass of particulate matter, we can increase the accuracy of climate model predictions. This is of tremendous importance because better predictions can inform better decisions of how to mitigate or adapt to climate change.”



Although atmospheric desert dust levels have increased since the pre-industrial period, this trend has not been steady, and, since there are so many natural and human-caused variables which can cause dust levels to increase or decline, scientists cannot accurately project how the amount of dust will change during the following decades. Moreover, while the increase in atmospheric dust has somewhat masked the full potential of greenhouse gases to warm the climate, the findings do not show that existing climate models are wrong.



“The climate models are very useful in predicting future climate change, and this finding could further improve their usefulness,” Kok concluded.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43017-022-00379-5">Nature Reviews Earth &amp; Environment</a>.

Atmospheric dust has been masking greenhouse warming

One of the most perplexing aspects of the COVID-19 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nature-increased-well-being-during-the-pandemic/">pandemic</a> was why some people got really ill and ended up needing hospitalization while others only got a mild case of the sniffles. In fact, while more than 6.5 million people died of this disease, some people didn’t even get infected, despite being exposed to the virus on a daily basis.&nbsp;



A lot of research has been devoted to finding reasons for this apparent unpredictability in severity, and many factors have been considered, including age, diet, vitamin deficiency, co-morbidities, living conditions, previous exposure to respiratory viruses, and balance of macrophages in the immune system.



A fascinating new study has now investigated the levels of certain environmental pollutants in the blood of a population of 154 residents of the city of Barcelona. These blood samples were taken back in 2016 for purposes other than studying COVID-19 susceptibility, and were part of the Barcelona Health Survey. Other data were collected from each participant at the time, such as information on chronic disorders (e.g., chronic bronchitis, anemia), mental health, life styles, uses of health services and preventive practices.&nbsp;



The blood samples were analyzed for levels of various organic pollutants (including persistent organic pollutants – POPs) and inorganic minerals, and participants were invited back between late 2020 and mid-2021, to be interviewed again. The researchers were interested in identifying any links between the presence in the blood of 112 different compounds, including 20 rare earth elements, and the frequency of SARS-CoV-2 infection and disease severity experienced by the participants.&nbsp;



The findings, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.envres.2023.115419">Environmental Research</a>, reveal that people with higher blood levels of certain pollutants had a higher risk of becoming infected and of developing the disease. The risk of developing COVID-19 was associated with levels DDD and DDE (derivatives of the pesticide DDT), as well as lead, thallium, ruthenium, tantalum, benzofluoranthene and manganese. High levels of thallium, ruthenium, lead and gold, were associated with a higher risk of infection, while high levels of iron and selenium were protective.



“What our study shows is that individual levels of certain environmental pollutants increase the risk of infection and the risk of developing the disease,” explained Miquel Porta, a physician at IMIM-Hospital de Mar and one of the main authors of the study. Other factors that influence the risk of developing COVID-19 are co-morbidities (i.e., whether the person already suffers from other diseases), smoking, age, education level, density of people in the home, or exposure to the virus on public transport or at work.



Interestingly, of the 112 different chemical substances tested, an average of 32 was detected in each individual participant. Reassuringly, concentrations of several historically prevalent POPs, as well as the minerals arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and zinc, were not associated with COVID-19 symptom severity, nor with SARS-CoV-2 infection.&nbsp;The researchers decided to analyze the impact of the substances when combined in groups of five, since there is scientific evidence that mixtures of pollutants may be more toxic than the individual components on their own.



“An important finding of the study is that it identifies mixtures of up to five substances, from different chemical groups, each of which increases the risk of infection and disease,” said Gemma Moncunill, researcher at <a href="https://www.isglobal.org/en">ISGlobal</a> and last author of the article.



The authors consider these results to be of&nbsp;“considerable scientific and social relevance,” as they provide the first prospective and population-based evidence of a possible link between individual blood levels of certain pollutants and SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 severity.



The experts state that their results open numerous research avenues to study the pathways and mechanisms whereby these various substances act on the immune system. These pollutants enter our bodies through multiple routes, from exposure to electronic devices to the feed used in intensive animal farming. Therefore, say the authors, if the associations&nbsp;are confirmed to be causal, policies to control the risks are available.

COVID risk linked to specific environmental pollutants

Commercial-scale deep seabed mining in international waters is set to begin for the first time in June 2023. However, according to a new study led by the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> and the <a href="https://www.greenpeace.to/greenpeace/">Greenpeace Research Laboratories</a>, the potential impacts of deep-sea mining on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-like-societies-cetaceans/">cetaceans</a> (mammals such as whales, dolphins, or porpoises) is still unknown. The experts are calling for urgent research to assess the risks that such operations pose to ocean ecosystems.



“Like many animals, cetaceans are already facing multiple stressors including climate change,” said Kirsten Thompson, an expert in Ecology at Exeter. “Very little research has examined the impact that deep-sea minerals extraction would have on cetaceans. Cetaceans are highly sensitive to sound, so noise from mining is a particular concern.”



According to the scientists, the sounds expected to be produced by these large-scale mining operations – including those from remotely operated vehicles on the seafloor – are likely to overlap with the acoustic frequencies at which cetaceans communicate.&nbsp;



“We searched for data on how much noise such mining would cause, but no published assessment is available. We know noise pollution in the ocean is already a problem for cetaceans and introducing another industry that is expected to operate 24/7 would inevitably add to existing anthropogenic noise were deep seabed mining to go ahead,” Thompson explained. “Despite this lack of information, it appears industrial-scale mining could soon begin in one of the planet’s few remaining undisturbed environments.”



The region in which the mining operations (led by the island of Nauru in order to exploit polymetallic nodules) will begin later this year – the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the Pacific Ocean – is currently home to approximately 25 species of cetaceans, including dolphins and sperm whales.



&nbsp;“Seamounts are now known as important offshore habitats for some cetacean populations that forage or regroup around them but we still lack basic knowledge of these fragile ecosystems,” said Solène Derville, a marine scientist at the <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/">Oregon State University</a>. “In this context, it is very hard to assess the magnitude of the impacts of seamount seabed mining on the animals that live and feed around these structures.”



Further research is needed to assess how these large-scale operations will impact the local cetacean populations, and devise methods of protecting them these already endangered species.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This strait provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.



Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Inhambane Bay in southeast Mozambique.&nbsp;



"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency </a>&nbsp;features the Kangerlussuaq Glacier, one of the largest tidewater outlet glaciers in Greenland. The glacier is located on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet.



As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes the complex relationship between ocean and climate. ESA's Climate Change Initiative will help us understand how oceans influence the climate and how climate change is impacting the oceans.&nbsp;



"Earth’s oceans are huge heat stores, soaking up 93% of the excess heat from human activity over the past 70 years. Ocean currents redistribute heat around the planet, from the Equator to the poles. Where this ocean heat goes influences weather patterns and regional climate," explains ESA.



"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.
