<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>Have you ever noticed how aggression plays a role in people's personalities, with some seeking competition while others prefer to avoid confrontation?</p>



<p>Much like humans, mice engage in territory and mate competitions, displaying increased confidence and aggression as they accumulate victories.</p>



<p>A recent study has revealed the critical influence of dopamine, a potent brain chemical, in aggressive behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dopamine-and-male-aggression">Dopamine and male aggression</h2>



<p>While dopamine has been associated with male aggression for many years, the influence of past experiences on this relationship has remained a mystery. </p>



<p>A group of researchers from <a href="https://nyulangone.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NYU Langone Health</a> decided to dig deeper, particularly focusing on the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dopamine-enhances-brain-function-during-exercise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dopamine</a>.</p>



<p>The team discovered that young, inexperienced male mice, when given a dopamine boost, fought twice as long as they would naturally fight.</p>



<p>Blocking the release of dopamine from certain cells made these novice fighters completely passive. </p>



<p>However, this was not the case for males with extensive fighting experience. Regardless of the increase or decrease of dopamine, the duration of their attacks remained the same. </p>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers noted that more victories bred more challenges, with victorious mice instigating more fights in the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dopamine-aggression-and-fighting-experience">Dopamine, aggression, and fighting experience</h2>



<p>Study senior author Dr. Dayu Lin is a professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.</p>



<p>“Our findings offer new insight into how both ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’ shape aggression in males,” said Dr. Lin. "While aggression is an innate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/science-behind-predicting-and-changing-human-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavior</a>, dopamine - and fighting experience - is essential for its maturation during adulthood.”</p>



<p>The research wasn't restricted to the relationship between dopamine and aggression. The team also explored the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-daydream-to-awareness-the-brains-alert-mechanism/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain mechanisms</a> at play during aggression learning.</p>



<p>They blocked dopamine release in certain brain areas related to aggression regulation and observed that novices stopped learning to fight, while experienced fighters continued their aggressive behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-diminishing-role-of-dopamine">The diminishing role of dopamine</h2>



<p>As the mice gained experience, the initial dopamine release in the brain became less potent, suggesting dopamine’s critical role in initial aggression learning. </p>



<p>The research also debunked any similar role of dopamine in female aggression, as altering dopamine levels did not affect female mice's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tourists-cause-anxiety-elephants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aggressive behaviors</a>.</p>



<p>Dr. Lin believes the results could potentially assist in addressing mental health conditions characterized by intense mood and behavior shifts, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder.</p>



<p>“Our results suggest that targeting dopamine may not be an effective tool when treating those with a long history of aggression,” noted Dr. Lin. “As a result, healthcare providers may need to consider a patient’s history, as well as their age and sex, when considering which therapy to use.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antipsychotic-medications-in-humans">Antipsychotic medications in humans</h2>



<p>These findings may further explain why antipsychotic drugs have a stronger and longer-lasting effect in children than in adults, as adult aggression often resurfaces once they stop receiving medication. </p>



<p>However, Dr. Lin cautions that while mice share similar brain chemistry with people and the current findings echo human clinical results, further research is needed to establish the influence of past behavior on the effectiveness of antipsychotic medications in humans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-human-behavior-and-mental-health">Implications for human behavior and mental health</h2>



<p>Even though the study was focused on mice, the findings open up intriguing questions about human aggression and behavior regulation.</p>



<p>The experts believe that the interplay between dopamine and experience could help explain why some individuals exhibit persistent aggressive tendencies, while others learn to regulate their responses over time.</p>



<p>This research may have implications for understanding behavioral disorders such as conduct disorder, intermittent explosive disorder, and even workplace aggression.</p>



<p>Management strategies for aggression are complex. Interventions that focus exclusively on dopamine systems may not be effective, as long-standing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pandemic-restrictions-had-a-lasting-effect-on-behavior-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">patterns of behavior</a> often require a more comprehensive approach.</p>



<p>Experts propose that a well-balanced application of behavioral therapy and medication for such conditions may result in better handling of aggression-related conditions.</p>



<p>While exploring the connection between brain chemicals and learned behaviors, scientists aim to develop more precise methods for treating mental health conditions, taking into account an individual’s life experiences and unique neurochemical responses.</p>

<p>Picture this: You're a male bird trying to get lucky. Traditional wisdom says pump up those testosterone levels, fight off the competition, and strut your stuff. But some clever birds have figured out a totally different game plan - one that involves producing <em>more</em> testosterone than their macho counterparts, only to destroy it moments later.</p>



<p>Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence, in collaboration with international colleagues, have discovered that these birds produce a super enzyme that rapidly breaks down testosterone. </p>



<p>The findings reveal that a single gene drives this process and that it happens in the blood, a tissue previously overlooked in hormone regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-testosterone-in-male-behavior">Role of testosterone in male behavior</h2>



<p>Testosterone is a key hormone in male physiology. It plays an essential role in sexual development, aggression, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-are-moving-north-and-breeding-earlier-in-a-changing-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reproductive behavior</a>. </p>



<p>Most testosterone is produced in the testes, where it supports sperm production and influences secondary sexual characteristics. The blood then carries the hormone to other parts of the body, including the brain, where it affects aggression and courtship behavior.</p>



<p>Traditionally, scientists have viewed high testosterone levels as advantageous for male animals, helping them compete for mates and establish dominance. However, recent research led by Clemens Küpper challenges this notion in ruffs. </p>



<p>The researchers found that some males actively eliminate testosterone from their bloodstream, raising an important question: why would a sexually competitive bird species reduce a hormone typically linked to mating success?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-three-morphs-with-distinct-mating-strategies">Three morphs with distinct mating strategies</h2>



<p>Male ruffs are unique because they exist in three different morphs, each with a distinct appearance and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-wild-bird-is-expecting-again-at-74/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reproductive strategy</a>. The majority of males belong to the "Independent" morph, characterized by darker plumage and territorial behavior. </p>



<p>These males compete aggressively in mating arenas known as leks, where they defend small territories and display for females. Their high testosterone levels support this assertive and dominant approach.</p>



<p>The second morph, known as "Satellites," is slightly smaller and has lighter-colored plumage. Unlike Independents, Satellites do not defend territories. Instead, they form alliances with Independents, peacefully positioning themselves within the lek to increase their chances of attracting a mate. </p>



<p>Their mating success does not depend on aggression, making high testosterone levels unnecessary.</p>



<p>The rarest morph, "Faeders," takes an entirely different approach. These males mimic females in both size and appearance, allowing them to slip into the lek unnoticed. </p>



<p>Disguised as females, they avoid direct competition while still managing to mate. For both Satellites and Faeders, excess testosterone could be a disadvantage, as it promotes aggressive behaviors that conflict with their alternative strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-basis-of-testosterone-regulation-in-birds">Basis of testosterone regulation in birds</h2>



<p>Until recently, little was known about the genetic mechanisms that regulate testosterone in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/older-blue-tits-have-a-mating-advantage-that-involves-cheating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a>. </p>



<p>The study of ruffs has provided key insights, as the three male morphs differ due to a single "supergene" - a section of DNA containing approximately 100 genes.</p>



<p>This genetic variation emerged around four million years ago when a chromosome fragment broke off and reinserted itself in the opposite direction, leading to the evolution of distinct morphs.</p>



<p>As researchers analyzed gene expression, they identified a crucial gene within the supergene that codes for an enzyme responsible for breaking down testosterone. This enzyme was produced in high quantities in Satellites and Faeders but was absent in Independents.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, when the team measured testosterone levels in the testes, they found that Satellites and Faeders actually produced more testosterone there than Independents. </p>



<p>This finding raised another question: if these males produce more testosterone in their testes, how do they maintain significantly lower levels of the hormone in their blood?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-super-enzyme-in-the-blood">Super enzyme in the blood</h2>



<p>The answer lies in an exceptionally powerful enzyme - what researchers call a "super enzyme" - that rapidly degrades testosterone.</p>



<p>This enzyme is present in large amounts in the blood of Satellites and Faeders, breaking down the hormone before it can circulate through the body. </p>



<p>In contrast, Independents completely lack this enzyme in their bloodstream, allowing them to maintain high testosterone levels that fuel their aggressive territorial behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birds-breaking-down-testosterone">Birds breaking down testosterone </h2>



<p>Before this discovery, scientists assumed that testosterone breakdown occurred primarily in the liver and other organs, with little to no regulation occurring directly in the blood. </p>



<p>"Based on previous research in other animals, we had assumed that this enzyme plays no role in the blood," explained Alex Zemella, one of the first authors of the study from <a href="https://www.bi.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence</a>.</p>



<p>"But our results revealed a previously unknown site there that the enzyme acts on. This means that the amount of circulating testosterone can be regulated directly in the blood – something that had previously been overlooked."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-single-gene-shapes-complex-behavior">A single gene shapes complex behavior</h2>



<p>This discovery highlights the sophisticated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/island-bird-communities-are-changing-in-unexpected-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strategies</a> male ruffs have evolved to maximize their reproductive success. Instead of relying solely on aggression, Satellites and Faeders have adapted a biochemical mechanism to regulate their behavior in a way that benefits their unique mating tactics.</p>



<p>"All males need testosterone in their testes for producing sperm," noted Jasmine Loveland, a lead author of the study.</p>



<p>"But the hormone also has other effects, for example in the brain, where it can promote aggressive and courtship behavior. It is interesting that the non-aggressive ruffs seem to have increased levels of the super enzyme throughout the brain too, especially in the hypothalamus." </p>



<p>"These results, along with the low testosterone levels in the blood, likely play an important role in shaping their mating strategies."</p>



<p>The ability to control testosterone levels so precisely allows Satellites and Faeders to optimize their reproductive success without the drawbacks of excessive aggression. </p>



<p>By modifying the way testosterone circulates in the body, they have developed a more subtle but equally effective way to compete for mates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-birds-and-testosterone">Future research on birds and testosterone</h2>



<p>The finding that a single gene can significantly influence testosterone regulation opens up new possibilities for research. Understanding how hormone levels shape complex social behaviors in ruffs may provide broader insights into other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-struggle-to-survive-spring-migration-after-bad-winters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a>, including mammals.</p>



<p>Going forward, the research team aims to explore how these genetic mechanisms affect brain function and social interactions in ruffs. They also plan to investigate how similar processes might influence reproductive strategies in other animals. </p>



<p>By continuing to study the genetic basis of behavioral diversity, scientists hope to uncover new details about the intricate relationship between hormones, genes, and mating success.</p>



<p>This study challenges conventional wisdom about testosterone and aggression, showing that high testosterone is not always an advantage. </p>



<p>In ruffs, a well-adapted enzyme allows some males to take a completely different route to reproductive success - proving that in evolution, strategy matters just as much as strength.</p>

Some birds trick their way into mating by removing testosterone from their bodies

<p>The stark reality of how education shapes our lifespan has never been clearer. New research reveals a troubling gap in life expectancy between Americans with different education levels - one that's been steadily widening. </p>



<p>The divide has grown so dramatic that college graduates in some U.S. counties are living nearly four decades longer than those without a high school diploma in others.</p>



<p>A new study from the&nbsp;Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME)&nbsp;at the&nbsp;University of Washington analyzed data from more than 3,000 U.S. counties and found that the gap in life expectancy between the most and least educated has widened dramatically over the past two decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-education-and-life-expectancy">Education and life expectancy</h2>



<p>The findings reveal that education plays a crucial role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-healthspan-people-are-living-longer-but-not-healthier/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">determining lifespan</a>. In 2000, the gap in life expectancy between the most and least educated individuals was about eight years. By 2019, this disparity had grown to nearly eleven years. </p>



<p>Over this period, individuals with higher education levels saw notable increases in their life expectancy, while those with lower levels of education experienced little to no improvement.</p>



<p>College graduates saw the most significant gains, with their average lifespan increasing by 2.5 years to 84.2 years. Those who completed some college experienced a more modest increase of 0.7 years, reaching an average lifespan of 82.1 years. </p>



<p>High school graduates saw only a slight improvement of 0.3 years, with their life expectancy reaching 77.3 years. Most concerning, individuals without a high school diploma saw no increase in life expectancy over the two decades, remaining at 73.5 years.</p>



<p>These findings highlight how formal education is closely tied to economic stability, health outcomes, and overall longevity.</p>



<p>"In the US, more formal education often translates to better employment opportunities, including higher-paying jobs that have fewer health risks. This puts people in a better position to build a healthy life and, when needed, obtain high-quality health care," noted Laura Dwyer-Lindgren, the study’s senior author and an associate professor at <a href="https://www.healthdata.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IHME</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geographic-differences-in-life-expectancy">Geographic differences in life expectancy</h2>



<p>Beyond education, geography plays a significant role in determining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-high-resilience-live-up-to-ten-years-longer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life expectancy</a>. The study found that lifespans varied widely across U.S. counties. When examining all education levels combined, life expectancy ranged from 68.2 years in the lowest counties to 93.2 years in the highest counties.</p>



<p>However, the disparities were particularly striking among those with the least education. Life expectancy for individuals without a high school diploma varied by more than three decades, from 57.9 years in some counties to 90.1 years in others. </p>



<p>In contrast, life expectancy among college graduates showed less variation, ranging from 75.2 years to 93.9 years, a difference of 18.7 years.</p>



<p>To put this into perspective, college graduates in the U.S. county with the highest life expectancy (93.9 years) are living&nbsp;36 years longer&nbsp;than those without a high school diploma in the county with the lowest life expectancy (57.9 years). </p>



<p>These disparities are staggering even on a global scale. If U.S. college graduates were considered as a separate country, their life expectancy would have ranked fourth in the world in 2019. In contrast, individuals with less than a high school diploma would have ranked 137th out of 199 countries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regions-with-declines-in-life-expectancy">Regions with declines in life expectancy</h2>



<p>The study identified specific regions where life <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/longevity-pills-for-dogs-could-help-humans-live-longer-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expectancy</a> has declined the most, particularly among individuals with lower levels of education. </p>



<p>Counties in the&nbsp;Southeast, Appalachia, and parts of South Dakota&nbsp;had some of the lowest life expectancies, particularly for those without a high school diploma.</p>



<p>Among those with some college education, significant declines in life expectancy were observed in counties across&nbsp;Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Florida, as well as in northern&nbsp;Arizona.</p>



<p>For high school graduates, counties in&nbsp;Virginia, the Carolinas, Texas, Louisiana, and Nebraska&nbsp;experienced some of the steepest declines. However, the largest declines for individuals without a high school diploma were concentrated in&nbsp;Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia.</p>

<p>Studies have shown that immigrants in the U.S. tend to have&nbsp;longer life expectancies than their U.S.-born counterparts, likely due to the selective nature of immigration. </p>



<p>Individuals who migrate to the U.S. are often healthier than the general population, and they may also benefit from&nbsp;stronger community ties, healthier lifestyle habits, and lower rates of smoking and substance abuse&nbsp;compared to native-born Americans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-education-for-men">Role of education for men</h2>



<p>The study also highlighted&nbsp;significant gender disparities in life expectancy, particularly among those with lower education levels. Women consistently outlived men, with the gap being most pronounced among those with the least education.</p>



<p>Nationally, women without a high school diploma had an average life expectancy of&nbsp;almost 72 years, while men in the same category had an average lifespan of&nbsp;just under 68 years. </p>



<p>Over the two decades studied, the gap between the least and most educated grew more for men than for women, suggesting that education plays an even&nbsp;more critical role in determining men’s longevity.</p>

<p>Investing in education could not only improve economic outcomes but also&nbsp;help close the health divide&nbsp;that continues to grow between the most and least educated Americans.</p>



<p>As the gap widens, the consequences become harder to ignore. Without targeted efforts to improve education and health equity, the U.S. risks becoming a country where lifespan is increasingly dictated by socioeconomic status and geographic location. </p>

<p>According to new research, <em>Homo erectus</em>, one of our early ancestors, was able to live and thrive in the tough, desert-like areas of Eastern Africa over a million years ago.</p>



<p>As the first hominin species to spread out of Africa, they demonstrated levels of adaptability and perseverance that was previously underestimated by the scientific community. </p>



<p>This conclusion overturns the long-standing assumption that only Homo sapiens, modern humans, had the ability to survive and flourish in extreme environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cradle-of-humankind">Cradle of Humankind</h2>



<p>Olduvai Gorge, often referred to as the “Cradle of Humankind,” has yielded a wealth of archeological findings over the years. </p>



<p>The main author of the study, Professor Julio Mercader Florín from the <a href="https://ucalgary.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Calgary</a>, along with his team, discovered evidence that <em>Homo erectus</em> repeatedly returned to specific locations, signifying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-tools-ever-made-on-earth-hominins-3-million-years-ago-cradle-of-humankind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strategic use of resources</a>.</p>



<p>“By doing archeology, what we can see is that <em>Homo erectus</em> keeps coming back to the same place in the landscape over thousands of years,” Mercader explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s not a one-time camp. There is thickness to the accumulation of archeological remains and fossils that is telling us that a species was targeting a very specific point in the landscape to do what they came here to do.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-homo-erectus-the-basics">Understanding <em>Homo erectus</em> - the basics</h2>



<p><em>Homo erectus</em> lived from around 1.9 million to 110,000 years ago, making them one of our longest-lived ancestors. They had a more modern body with longer legs and shorter arms, which allowed them to walk and run efficiently across Africa, Asia, and Europe. </p>



<p>Their skulls featured thick brow ridges and robust jaws, and they used sophisticated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/400000-year-old-stone-tools-show-technological-adaptations-of-prehistoric-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Acheulean stone tools</a> while being among the first to control fire for cooking and protection. </p>



<p>Socially, <em>Homo erectus</em> likely lived in groups, which would have helped them survive in diverse and sometimes harsh environments. </p>



<p>They showed signs of complex behavior, such as planning hunts and possibly even early forms of communication to coordinate within their groups.</p>

<p>With a varied diet that included <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-thrived-on-plant-based-diets-not-meat-alone-780000-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">both meat and plants</a>, <em>Homo erectus</em> played a crucial role in human evolution, bridging the gap between earlier ancestors and the rise of Homo sapiens.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-east-africa-s-harsh-past">East Africa’s harsh past</h2>



<p>To reconstruct the environmental conditions during the time of <em>Homo erectus</em>, the research team used advanced modeling techniques.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Study co-author Jed Kaplan, a Canada Research Chair in global systems modeling at the University of Calgary, simulated East Africa’s landscapes to analyze the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-climate-shift-sheds-light-on-future-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a>, vegetation, and ecological pressures faced by early humans.</p>



<p>“Things like extreme climate change leading to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oases-grow-by-human-effort-but-face-threats-from-desertification/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">desertification</a> would have been really difficult for hominins to survive,” Kaplan noted. </p>



<p>“What we discovered in the study is that, in fact, we find plenty of evidence for hominin activity under environmental conditions - so climate, vegetation - that suggest really hot and dry periods.”</p>



<p>These findings challenge previous assumptions that early humans avoided extreme environments. Instead, <em>Homo erectus</em> appears to have demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt to varying and often inhospitable conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adapting-beyond-expectations">Adapting beyond expectations</h2>



<p>The research reveals that <em>Homo erectus</em> had an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quick-species-adaptability-shapes-long-term-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adaptability</a> comparable to that of modern humans, who emerged 200,000 to 300,000 years ago and spread across diverse environments, from Arctic tundras to tropical rainforests.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s well known that by the time modern humans come on the landscape, we are really adaptable. We not only spread out in Africa but also start inhabiting all of these really different environments - everything from the Arctic tundra to the Sahara desert and the tropical rainforest and everything in between,” Kaplan explained.</p>



<p>Kaplan noted that <em>Homo erectus</em> not only inhabited diverse ecosystems, they may have even built boats to cross oceanic straits.</p>



<p>“It’s still unknown whether they could talk or had language, but they may have been able to communicate in other ways to find resources such as water or rocks for making tools or fire,” Kaplan said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>The study’s findings have profound implications for understanding human evolution and adaptability. By demonstrating that <em>Homo erectus</em> could thrive in a range of extreme environments, the research expands our view of early human resilience and survival strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is a contribution to a better understanding of our planet and humans’ role in it,” Kaplan said.</p>



<p>The interdisciplinary nature of the research, which involved experts in archaeology, paleoclimate science, and biogeochemistry, highlights the value of collaboration in addressing complex questions about the past.</p>



<p>“It illustrates how modern climate research works,” Mercader said. “It is a model for addressing the science of past and present-day climate science research.”</p>

<p>By piecing together evidence from diverse scientific disciplines, researchers have provided a vivid glimpse into the lives of our ancient predecessors, affirming their resourcefulness and setting the stage for further exploration of the human evolutionary journey.</p>



<p>This interdisciplinary study was led by Professor Julio Mercader Florín and researchers from the University of Calgary, the University of Manitoba, and 17 other global institutions examined archeological and environmental evidence from Olduvai Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Tanzania.</p>

<p>The ripple effects of divorce stretch far beyond the immediate emotional upheaval. A groundbreaking study has revealed that experiencing parental divorce during childhood may significantly increase the risk of stroke later in life. </p>



<p>This surprising connection persists even after accounting for well-known stroke risk factors, suggesting that early-life family disruption could have more profound health implications than previously thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-divorce-linked-to-higher-stroke-risk">Divorce linked to higher stroke risk</h2>



<p>The study, which analyzed survey data from over 13,000 older Americans, found that one in nine individuals aged 65 and older who had experienced parental divorce had been diagnosed with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eyes-serve-as-an-early-warning-system-for-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke</a>. </p>



<p>In contrast, only one in 15 of those whose parents remained together during their childhood reported the same health issue.</p>



<p>Mary Kate Schilke, a university lecturer in the Psychology Department at <a href="https://www.tyndale.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tyndale University</a>, is the study’s first author.</p>



<p>“Our study indicates that even after taking into account most of the known risk factors associated with stroke - including smoking, physical inactivity, lower income and education, diabetes, depression, and low social support - those whose parents had divorced still had 61% higher odds of having a stroke,” noted Schilke. </p>



<p>The association between parental divorce and stroke was found to be as strong as two well-known <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dramatic-temperature-changes-linked-to-half-a-million-stroke-deaths/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke risk factors</a>: diabetes and depression. </p>



<p>These results align with research conducted nearly a decade ago, which also demonstrated a significant link between childhood parental divorce and increased stroke risk in adulthood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-parental-divorce-and-stroke-connection">Parental divorce and stroke connection</h2>



<p>Although the study establishes a clear correlation between childhood parental divorce and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/could-blood-type-determine-your-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke</a>, the researchers are still working to determine the underlying causes of this connection.</p>



<p>Study senior author Esme Fuller-Thomson, a professor at the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a>, acknowledged that more research is needed to understand the mechanisms at play.</p>



<p>“We need to shed light on the mechanisms that may contribute to this association,” she said. “While these types of survey-based studies cannot establish causality, we are hoping that our consistent findings will inspire others to examine the topic.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-other-types-of-childhood-adversity">Other types of childhood adversity</h2>



<p>To ensure the results were not influenced by other adverse childhood experiences, the researchers carefully excluded participants who had a history of physical or sexual abuse.</p>



<p>Even after removing these cases, the link between parental divorce and stroke remained strong.</p>



<p>“We found that even when people hadn’t experienced childhood physical and sexual abuse and had at least one adult who made them feel safe in their childhood home, they still were more likely to have a stroke if their parents had divorced,” noted co-author Philip Baiden, an associate professor in the School of Social Work at the <a href="https://www.uta.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Texas at Arlington</a>.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, other types of childhood adversity - such as emotional abuse, neglect, exposure to household mental illness, substance abuse, and domestic violence - were not significantly associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exposure-to-light-pollution-could-increase-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke risk</a> in this study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-biological-and-social-factors">Role of biological and social factors</h2>



<p>While the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the researchers believe that both biological and social factors may contribute to the increased risk of stroke among those who experienced parental divorce in childhood.</p>



<p>One possible explanation is related to chronic stress and its long-term physiological effects. Fuller-Thomson highlighted how childhood parental divorce may lead to prolonged exposure to high levels of stress hormones. </p>



<p>“From a biological embedding perspective, having your parents split up during childhood could lead to sustained high levels of stress hormones,” she explained. “Experiencing this as a child could have lasting influences on the developing brain and a child’s ability to respond to stress.”</p>



<p>The stress associated with parental divorce may also contribute to unhealthy coping mechanisms and behavioral patterns later in life. </p>



<p>Individuals who experienced divorce during childhood might be more prone to chronic stress, which has been linked to increased inflammation, high blood pressure, and other conditions that elevate stroke risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-stroke-prevention">Implications for stroke prevention</h2>



<p>The study was focused on data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey. The researchers examined survey responses from 13,205 older Americans, of whom 13.9% had experienced parental divorce during childhood.</p>



<p>If this association is confirmed, childhood family history could become an important consideration in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-adults-with-migraines-have-a-greater-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke</a> prevention and healthcare strategies. Schilke noted that these findings could eventually help medical professionals tailor stroke prevention programs.</p>



<p>“If future research finds similar links between parental divorce and stroke, it is possible that knowledge about whether or not their patient grew up in an intact family will be used by health professionals to improve targeted outreach for stroke prevention and education,” said Schilke.</p>



<p>While the study cannot definitively prove that parental divorce causes an increased risk of stroke, it raises important questions about how childhood experiences shape long-term health outcomes. </p>



<p>As research in this area continues, understanding the long-term health consequences of early-life stress could lead to more effective interventions and support systems for individuals at higher risk.</p>

Shock study: Children of divorced parents are at higher risk of having a stroke

<p>For 130 years, the enigmatic nature of the orchid <em>Stigmatodactylus sikokianus</em> puzzled scientists and botanists alike.</p>



<p>Named in 1889 by renowned Japanese botanist MAKINO Tomitaro, the fungus-consuming plant features a distinct appendage reminiscent of a tiny finger on its stigma - the part of the flower that accepts pollen.</p>



<p>But why is this appendage there, and what purpose does it serve? Despite its popularity among Japan's iconic orchids, the function of this unique feature remained a mystery - until now.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.kobe-u.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kobe University</a> botanist SUETSUGU Kenji specializes in orchids that feed on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-fungi-determine-the-gradient-of-forest-diversity-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil fungi</a> rather than sunlight. Stigmatodactylus, he realized, fit this bill perfectly.</p>



<p>“I’m particularly interested in their pollination mechanisms, employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates taxonomy, ecology, and evolutionary biology," said Kenji.</p>



<p>His fascination with these unique orchids propelled him to investigate further, questioning the purpose and ecological role of the finger-like appendage that had attracted so much attention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-orchid-that-self-pollinates">The orchid that self-pollinates </h2>



<p>Kenji's research sheds light on a unique <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-apocalypse-australasia-is-facing-a-hidden-pollination-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollination</a> method. He found that <em>Stigmatodactylus sikokianus</em> predominantly self-pollinates, which means it doesn’t require insects to transport pollen from one plant to another.</p>



<p>Interestingly, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-faced-with-competition-some-plants-learn-to-self-pollinate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">self-pollination</a> occurs roughly three days after the flower opens. This delay bears significant ecological implications.</p>



<p>Given the plant's natural habitat in dark forest understories, it is rarely visited by potential pollinators.</p>



<p>“While self-pollination likely guarantees reproductive success, relying solely on this method risks inbreeding. This may drive the evolution of mechanisms that combine the benefits of self-pollination and outcrossing," said Kenji.</p>



<p>"Delayed self-pollination, postponed until opportunities for outcrossing are exhausted, is likely one such adaptation - a failsafe mechanism.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-novel-self-pollination-mechanism">Novel self-pollination mechanism </h2>



<p>While meticulously observing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-how-plants-adapt-to-changing-climates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a>, Kenji noticed that the finger-like appendage plays a crucial role in self-pollination.</p>



<p>On the third day after the flower opens, the stigma collapses and makes contact with the pollen-carrying anther, aided by the finger-like appendage, thereby fertilizing the plant. </p>



<p>“The movement of the stigma appendage represents, to the best of our knowledge, a novel self-pollination mechanism in orchids,” said Kenji.</p>



<p>He noted that since there are 28 species in the Stigmatodactylus family, many of which share this unique appendage, this self-pollination mechanism could be common in other species too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridging-traditional-research-with-modern-science">Bridging traditional research with modern science</h2>



<p>Kenji hopes his work will help bridge the gap between historical botanical research and contemporary scientific inquiries. </p>



<p>“The significance of this discovery lies in its ability to bridge historical botanical research and contemporary scientific inquiry. It underscores the value of integrating meticulous taxonomic analysis with ecological and evolutionary studies to gain novel insights," said Kenji.</p>



<p>"This study demonstrates that traditional natural history research, unifying taxonomy, evolution and ecology, still has the power to uncover new phenomena today.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-orchids-self-pollinate-to-survive">Orchids self-pollinate to survive</h2>



<p>Understanding the unique pollination mechanism of <em>Stigmatodactylus sikokianus</em> offers significant implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/despite-their-incredible-adaptability-orchids-are-disappearing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">orchid conservation</a> efforts.</p>



<p>Many orchid species are highly specialized and depend on specific ecological conditions to thrive. </p>



<p>The newfound knowledge about the self-pollination strategy of <em>Stigmatodactylus sikokianus</em> sheds light on how other orchid species may have evolved to adapt to low-pollinator environments.</p>



<p>This insight can guide conservationists in designing better habitat protection strategies and cultivation techniques to ensure the survival of orchids facing similar ecological challenges. </p>



<p>Furthermore, it highlights the need to preserve the dark forest understories where these delicate plants flourish, as habitat destruction poses a major threat to their existence.</p>

<p>This ability to self-pollinate suggests that evolution has equipped some orchids with a dual approach - allowing time for potential cross-pollination before resorting to self-fertilization as a last resort.</p>



<p>The findings contribute to our understanding of plant reproductive biology and may inspire further research into similar mechanisms in related plant families.</p>



<p>By studying these adaptations, scientists can better comprehend how plants respond to environmental pressures and how they might adapt to future changes, such as climate shifts and habitat fragmentation.</p>

<p>Recently, though, archaeologists have managed to unearth an incredible reminder of the grandeur of Pompeii's heyday - an elaborate private bathhouse, believed to be the largest of its kind within a private home.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extravagant-roman-life">Extravagant Roman life</h2>



<p>Nestled within the confines of a wealthy residence, the bathhouse serves as a poignant reminder of the city's affluent inhabitants. </p>



<p>Only the elite could afford such luxury, so this bathhouse indicates the presence of thriving industry in the city, alongside robust financial and political networks.</p>



<p>The remnants of two people who sought refuge in a smaller room capture the terrifying moment that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tragic-end-of-pompeii-was-not-solely-caused-by-mount-vesuvius/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vesuvius</a> erupted, their fate sealed by a collapsed wall and a lethal flood of volcanic gas and ash.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pompeii-s-lavish-bathhouse">Pompeii's lavish bathhouse</h2>



<p>The bathhouse featured a range of rooms designed to cater to different bathing needs.</p>



<p>Primary among these was a large plunge pool that was surrounded by scarlet columns and frescoes of athletes.</p>



<p>There were hot, cold, and warm rooms, each serving its unique purpose. </p>

<p>A warm room, presumably for oil massages, led to a sauna-like hot room. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sauna-bathing-cardiovascular-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sauna</a> had a specially designed suspended floor that allowed hot air to flow underneath the room.</p>



<p>Beyond these comforts, the bathhouse was resplendent with a changing room that boasted a mosaic floor adorned with geometric patterns that were made using marbles sourced from across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/using-ai-to-decode-the-legacy-of-the-roman-empire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman Empire</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimpse-into-pompeii-s-final-moments">Glimpse into Pompeii’s final moments</h2>



<p>A team of archaeologists, accompanied by a crew from the BBC and Lion TV, have discovered an entire city block, which also houses a laundry, bakery, and a grand banquet hall, apart from the luxurious private residence containing the bathhouse. </p>



<p>The block is believed to have been owned by Aulus Rustius Verus, a notable Pompeii politician.</p>



<p>Near a small prayer room, the remains of two individuals were found - a woman aged between 35 and 50 who was clutching jewelry and coins, and a young man in his late teens or early twenties.</p>

<p>"The pyroclastic flow from Vesuvius came along the street just outside this room, and caused a wall to collapse, and that had basically crushed him to death," said Dr. Sophie Hay, an archaeologist at Pompeii, as she described the tragic scene.</p>



<p>"The woman was still alive while he was dying - imagine the trauma - and then this room filled with the rest of the pyroclastic flow, and that's how she died."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reality-of-the-pompeii-bathhouse">Reality of the Pompeii bathhouse</h2>



<p>The grand bathhouse, a once-in-a-century find, also bears witness to the grim reality of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-that-ancient-rome-smelled-like-patchouli/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman life</a>. </p>



<p>Behind the hot room, a sweltering boiler room lies, where slaves would have had to toil in intolerable heat.</p>



<p>In the coming weeks, the excavation will conclude, and the public will get a chance to witness this incredible find.</p>

<p>Apart from the bathhouse discovery, a previous study, led by the University of Naples Federico II, also shed light on a massive Alexander the Great mosaic that was unearthed in Pompeii in 1831.</p>



<p>The mosaic, made of nearly two million pieces, may have utilized rocks from various Mediterranean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lead-pollution-may-have-caused-the-fall-of-the-roman-empire/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mining</a> areas, including Greece, Tunisia, and the Iberian Peninsula, which supports the idea that the Roman Empire had far-reaching connections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pompeii-s-ash-locked-history-in-time">Pompeii's ash locked history in time</h2>



<p>The extraordinary preservation of Pompeii’s structures and artifacts, including the recently discovered bathhouse, is a reflection of the unique conditions created by Mount Vesuvius' eruption. </p>



<p>The volcanic ash and pumice that blanketed the city acted as a protective seal, preserving architectural details, organic materials, and even human remains in remarkable detail. </p>



<p>Layers of fine ash solidified over time, creating a mold of the city's final moments and allowing modern archaeologists to reconstruct daily life with unparalleled accuracy.</p>



<p>Advanced imaging techniques have played a crucial role in revealing hidden structures beneath the hardened layers of volcanic debris. </p>



<p>These technologies not only help locate previously unknown sites but also allow researchers to study fragile artifacts without intrusive excavation.</p>



<p>The bathhouse discovery highlights the ongoing importance of scientific innovation in archaeology. </p>



<p>As the excavation progresses, experts hope to uncover even more details about the materials used, the engineering marvels of the time, and the social dynamics of Pompeii’s elite.</p>

<p>The clever coyotes of San Francisco are proving just how adaptable they can be to urban life. </p>



<p>These native predators, who returned to the city in the early 2000s after a century-long absence, aren't just surviving in the concrete jungle - they're thriving. The coyotes have learned to switch up their menu based on what each neighborhood has to offer.</p>



<p>Scientists from the University of California, Davis, recently conducted a study to better understand how these animals are adapting to urban life. </p>



<p>The findings reveal how restaurant density, pavement levels, and other urban features influence what coyotes eat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-coyotes-diets-are-changing">Urban coyotes’ diets are changing</h2>



<p>Urban environments present new challenges and opportunities for wildlife. As green spaces shrink, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hunting-coyotes-actually-boosts-their-numbers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coyotes</a> in San Francisco are forced to modify their food sources. </p>



<p>The researchers found that these adaptable predators consume a significant amount of human-provided food. “Chicken is a really big diet item; we found it in 72% of the scat samples analyzed in the study,” noted lead author Tali Caspi, a Ph.D. candidate at <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis</a>.</p>



<p>Despite their reliance on human food, coyotes still hunt natural prey when available. Pocket gophers, a common rodent in the area, were the second most frequent food source, found in 57% of scat samples. </p>



<p>Other notable items in their diet included pig (human-sourced) and raccoon (natural prey). </p>



<p>While concerns about coyotes hunting domestic cats exist, the study showed that feline remains appeared in only 4.5% of analyzed samples. This suggests that predation on pet cats is not a significant part of their diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigating-urban-coyote-diets">Investigating urban coyote diets</h2>



<p>To uncover these dietary patterns, the researchers collected more than 700 coyote scat samples from different parts of San Francisco between September 2019 and April 2022.</p>



<p>The team analyzed the samples at UC Davis’ <a href="https://vgl.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Veterinary Genetics Laboratory</a>, using genotyping to match scat to individual coyotes and DNA metabarcoding to determine what they had eaten.</p>



<p>One key finding was that urban coyotes living in areas with high restaurant density, such as downtown and other heavily paved neighborhoods, consumed more human food. </p>



<p>In contrast, those living in greener areas, such as the Presidio or Golden Gate Park, relied more on natural prey. This variation highlights how coyotes adapt their foraging behavior based on their surroundings.</p>



<p>The study also revealed that while individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coyotes-can-make-puppy-dog-eyes-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coyotes</a> within the same family had similar diets, the diets of different family groups varied significantly. </p>



<p>“This study highlights the huge range of dietary and habitat affinities of coyotes as a species. That is a trait for which they are already well-known, but the study also joins a growing body of evidence pointing to relatively narrow proclivities of coyotes as individuals. They tend to stick with what they know,” noted senior author Ben Sacks, director of the <a href="https://mecu.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mammalian Ecology and Conservation Unit</a> at UC Davis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-return-of-coyotes-to-san-francisco">Return of coyotes to San Francisco</h2>



<p>Coyotes are native to San Francisco, but they were eradicated from the city in the early 1900s. For nearly a century, they were absent from the urban landscape. </p>



<p>However, in the early 2000s, coyotes made a comeback and have since established a stable population in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coyotes-live-longer-in-densely-populated-human-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urban areas</a>. </p>



<p>Today, they share space with more than 870,000 people in a city that spans just 47 square miles, making San Francisco the second-most densely populated major city in the United States.</p>



<p>Despite their return, many people remain unaware of how to coexist with these animals. Coyotes are opportunistic feeders, meaning they take advantage of whatever food is easiest to access. </p>



<p>While they can hunt naturally, human-provided food - whether intentionally given or found in trash - has become a major part of their diet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coexisting-with-urban-coyotes">Coexisting with urban coyotes</h2>



<p>As coyotes continue to thrive in San Francisco, it is important for residents to take steps to reduce conflicts. </p>



<p>Many conflicts arise when people inadvertently provide food, either by leaving pet food outside, improperly disposing of trash, or feeding them directly. This can make coyotes more comfortable around humans, increasing the chances of unwanted encounters.</p>



<p>“There’s a misconception that coyotes are starving and need our help finding food in San Francisco, and clearly they don’t,” noted Caspi.</p>



<p>In reality, coyotes are highly adaptable and capable of surviving without human intervention.</p>



<p>Another way to minimize conflicts is by keeping domestic pets safe. Coyotes may not actively hunt cats, but they are opportunistic predators. Keeping cats indoors and ensuring that small pets are supervised can help reduce negative interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-wildlife-and-adaptation">Urban wildlife and adaptation</h2>



<p>San Francisco’s urban <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/city-life-has-a-huge-impact-on-coyote-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coyotes</a> are part of a larger trend of wildlife adapting to city life. Around the world, animals are learning new ways to survive in urban environments. </p>



<p>Song sparrows in Portland, Oregon, adjust their song frequencies to be heard over city noise, while cockatoos in Australia have figured out how to open trash cans for food. These behaviors demonstrate how different species develop unique survival strategies when faced with human-made landscapes.</p>



<p>“There are a lot of different ways to survive city life as an animal,” Caspi said. “It speaks to the plasticity and resilience of these species to see all of these different strategies for coping with urban life.”</p>



<p>Coyotes, known for their intelligence and adaptability, are no exception. They have successfully integrated into one of the country’s most densely populated cities, using their keen instincts to navigate an environment vastly different from their historical range.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-coyotes-in-san-francisco">Future of coyotes in San Francisco</h2>



<p>The study’s findings provide valuable insights into urban wildlife management. By understanding what coyotes eat and how they adapt to their environment, city officials and conservationists can implement better strategies to reduce conflicts while protecting both wildlife and human residents.</p>



<p>The research was funded by a Christine Stevens Wildlife Award from the Animal Welfare Institute, along with support from UC Davis, <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Berkeley</a>, and the UC Davis <a href="https://education.ucdavis.edu/center-community-and-citizen-science" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Community and Citizen Science</a>. </p>



<p>Contributions from community scientists via iNaturalist also played a crucial role in the study, helping researchers locate fresh scat samples and even leading to a rare discovery of fin whale DNA in a coyote’s diet. This was traced back to a beached whale recorded on the app.</p>



<p>As San Francisco continues to evolve, so will its urban coyotes. They have proven their ability to adapt, and their presence in the city is likely to remain a fixture of the urban ecosystem. Learning to coexist with them will be essential in maintaining a balance between wildlife conservation and city life.</p>

<p>A recent study led by the University of Oxford challenges the widely held notion that plants actively communicate with each other to warn of impending threats.</p>



<p>Instead, the findings suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-have-complex-biochemical-communication-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plants</a> are more likely to passively “eavesdrop” on their neighbors through shared fungal networks rather than engage in altruistic signaling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-underground-communication-network">Underground communication network</h2>



<p>Beneath the soil, plants are connected by an intricate fungal network popularly referred to as the “wood wide web.” This network emerges from the symbiotic relationships between plant roots and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-distribute-enormous-amounts-of-co2-to-mycorrhizal-fungi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mycorrhizal fungi</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In this partnership, plants supply fungi with carbon while the fungi provide essential nutrients to the plants. These networks also enable the transmission of resources and information among plants.</p>



<p>Previous studies have demonstrated that when one plant is attacked by herbivores or pathogens, neighboring plants connected to the same fungal network often strengthen their defenses.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, it has remained unclear whether these responses result from active warnings sent by the attacked plant or passive cues interpreted by its neighbors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-questioning-altruism-in-plant-behavior">Questioning altruism in plant behavior</h2>



<p>The idea that plants actively warn their neighbors poses a puzzle for evolutionary biologists. Altruistic behavior is generally rare in nature and typically occurs when it offers mutual benefits. For plants competing for resources like sunlight and nutrients, warning their neighbors would seem counterintuitive.</p>



<p>To address this paradox, an international research team from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a> and <a href="https://vu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam</a> developed mathematical models to explore whether plants would evolve to signal threats to one another.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The results suggest that it is highly unlikely for plants to develop active warning mechanisms, as such behavior would not confer significant evolutionary advantages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plants-communicate-in-deceptive-ways">Plants communicate in deceptive ways</h2>



<p>The study revealed that plants might even engage in deceptive signaling to gain an advantage over their competitors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our results indicate that it is more likely that plants will behave deceptively toward their neighbors, rather than altruistically,” said lead author Thomas Scott from the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“For instance, plants may signal that a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-herbivore-extinctions-drastically-affect-forest-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">herbivore</a> attack is occurring, even when no herbivore is present. Plants can gain a benefit from dishonest signaling because it harms their local competitors, by tricking them into investing in costly herbivore defense mechanisms.”</p>



<p>The findings challenge the idea of plants as cooperative entities and instead suggest that what appears to be altruistic behavior may often serve competitive or self-interested purposes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-do-neighboring-plants-still-respond"><strong>Why do neighboring plants still respond?</strong></h2>



<p>If plants are not actively warning their neighbors, why do connected plants upregulate their defenses when one is attacked? The researchers proposed two alternative explanations.</p>



<p>First, plants might unintentionally emit cues when under stress, similar to humans blushing when embarrassed. These involuntary emissions could be picked up by neighboring plants as signals of a threat, even though the emitting plant gains no direct benefit from sharing this information.</p>



<p>Second, the fungal networks themselves could play an active role in transmitting warnings. Mycorrhizal fungi rely on healthy plants for their survival, as plants provide them with carbohydrates. By relaying signals about potential threats, the fungi may protect their host plants and ensure the stability of the network.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Maybe it is the fungal networks themselves that are sending the warning signals,” Scott said. “Mycorrhizal fungi rely on the plants on their network for carbohydrates, so it’s important to keep these plants in good condition. Perhaps the fungi are listening in on their plant partners, detecting when one has been attacked, and warning the others to prepare themselves.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nosy-plants-that-eavesdrop">Nosy plants that eavesdrop</h2>



<p>Co-author Toby Kiers from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offered another perspective, likening plants to neighbors gossiping about a shared environment:</p>



<p>“There is no dispute that information is transferred. Organisms are constantly detecting and processing information about their environment. The question is whether plants are actively sending signals to warn each other. Maybe just like gossiping neighbors, one plant is simply <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eavesdropping-viruses-the-unseen-war-within-our-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eavesdropping</a> on the another.”</p>



<p>This reinterpretation highlights the possibility that plants are more passive participants in these networks, interpreting cues rather than engaging in intentional communication.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-plant-ecology-and-conservation">Implications for plant ecology and conservation</h2>



<p>The study’s findings have significant implications for our understanding of plant behavior and ecosystem dynamics. Recognizing that plants may rely more on passive information gathering than active signaling shifts the focus of research to the role of fungal networks in mediating plant interactions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This knowledge could be valuable in predicting how plant communities will respond to environmental changes such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat loss</a> or climate change.</p>



<p>Understanding these dynamics also has potential applications in agriculture and conservation. For instance, manipulating fungal networks might enhance crop resilience or help restore ecosystems by improving communication between plants in stressed environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>While the study provides compelling theoretical support for the eavesdropping hypothesis, further empirical research is needed to validate these models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Experiments could focus on isolating the role of fungi in transmitting signals and exploring whether different plant species vary in their ability to interpret these cues.</p>



<p>Additionally, studying how plants and fungi interact in diverse ecosystems could reveal whether certain environments favor passive communication over active signaling.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Expanding the research to include underrepresented plant species and regions would also provide a more comprehensive understanding of these interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-how-plants-communicate">Rethinking how plants communicate </h2>



<p>This study fundamentally challenges the idea of plants as altruistic communicators, suggesting instead that their behavior may be driven by competition, self-interest, and passive eavesdropping.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By highlighting the role of fungal networks, the research opens new avenues for exploring the intricate relationships that sustain plant communities.</p>



<p>As Scott and his team continue to refine their models and expand their investigations, the hidden dynamics of plant communication promise to reveal even more about the complex strategies plants use to survive and thrive in their environments.</p>

<p>Stress is often viewed as harmful, associated with “wear-and-tear” on the body. However, this study aimed to explore how the physiological stress response might serve an adaptive function.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We wanted to understand how the stress response adaptively helps these individuals survive greater challenges,” explained Susan Perry, a <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a> evolutionary anthropologist and co-author of the study.</p>



<p>Perry and her team leveraged the devastating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> drought as a natural experiment to investigate how hormonal stress responses correlated with survival outcomes in white-faced capuchin monkeys.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-el-nino-s-impact-on-monkeys">El Niño’s impact on monkeys</h2>



<p>The El Niño <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megadroughts-are-becoming-more-frequent-and-severe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drought</a>, the most severe in recent history, significantly altered the lives of the monkeys at the Lomas Barbudal Capuchin Monkey Project in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. For over 35 years, Perry and her team have documented the lives and social behaviors of these monkeys. </p>



<p>However, the extreme drought pushed the population to its limits, with widespread food shortages leading to visible weight loss, abandonment of infants, and drastically reduced caretaking behaviors. Mortality rates soared, especially among infants and older females.</p>



<p>According to Perry, this was the only time in their longitudinal study that these monkeys, who are usually behaviorally flexible, did not manage to adapt to an environmental stressor by simply changing how they behaved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-indicators-of-stress-in-monkeys">Indicators of stress in monkeys</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed fecal samples collected between 2008 and 2013 from 28 female monkeys - 14 who survived the drought and 14 who did not. These samples contained glucocorticoids, hormones that regulate metabolism, immune response, and inflammation.</p>



<p>The findings revealed that monkeys exhibiting a more pronounced rise in glucocorticoid levels during mild droughts were significantly more likely to survive the severe El Niño drought. This result held true even after accounting for variables like pregnancy and time of day.</p>



<p>The study provides a clearer understanding of how an adaptive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stress-eats-away-our-brains-cognitive-defenses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> response looks in this species. These findings suggest that a steeper hormonal response to milder stressors might prepare individuals to cope with more extreme challenges in the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-studies-in-a-changing-climate">Long-term studies in a changing climate</h2>



<p>The research underscores the importance of longitudinal studies in understanding how animals cope with increasingly extreme weather events caused by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/temperatures-impact-the-immune-system-of-wild-monkeys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. </p>



<p>Perry’s team believes that such studies can reveal which species possess the physiological flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing environments and which are more vulnerable.</p>



<p>For instance, the white-faced capuchins' inability to adapt behaviorally during the drought marked a stark departure from their usual flexibility, raising questions about the limits of such adaptability in other species.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Long-term data like this can help conservationists identify species or populations at risk and guide interventions.</p>



<p>According to the experts, a population of highly endangered animals that cannot quickly adapt to change might need to be moved to a place that now has climatic conditions that match the environment in which that population evolved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-biology-and-conservation">Evolutionary biology and conservation</h2>



<p>The study not only sheds light on the origins and maintenance of individual differences in stress responses but also has broader implications for evolutionary biology. Understanding how certain physiological traits enhance survival can provide clues about the pressures that shape species over time.</p>



<p>As climate change continues to intensify, studies like this are essential for identifying species’ resilience thresholds and informing conservation strategies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to official statistics, over 100,000 annual cases of illness in Germany are likely the result of microorganisms in food, such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Experts believe these numbers reflect only a fraction of the true scale, as many cases go unreported. </p>



<p>Despite the actual risks posed by poor kitchen hygiene, the <a href="https://www.bfr.bund.de/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment</a> (BfR) reports that public concern about this issue remains surprisingly low.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the latest BfR consumer monitor, a mere 17% of respondents expressed concern about kitchen hygiene and related illnesses, whereas 68% worried about microplastics and 52% about residues of plant protection products in their food.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-misconceptions-mistakes-only-happen-elsewhere">Misconceptions: Mistakes only happen elsewhere</h2>



<p>Dr. Heidi Wichmann-Schauer, a hygiene specialist at the BfR, attributes this gap in perception to a widespread belief that mishandling of food occurs primarily outside one’s own home.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Most people assume that they themselves do not make mistakes in their own kitchen, but that the mistakes are produced by others,” she explained in an episode of the BfR’s science podcast <a href="https://podcast.bfr.bund.de/6-unterschatztes-risiko-keime-in-der-kuche-006" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Risko</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Contrary to such assumptions, even minor lapses in everyday kitchen routines can facilitate the transfer of pathogens to meals, resulting in severe foodborne illnesses. </p>



<p>These infections can pose life-threatening risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like young children, pregnant women, seniors, or individuals with weakened immune systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-animal-products-and-foodborne-illnesses">Animal products and foodborne illnesses </h2>



<p>Foods of animal origin, such as meat, fish, eggs, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-raw-milk-health-hazard-pasteurization-important/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unpasteurized milk</a>, often host pathogens capable of causing disease in both animals and humans - a classification known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-u-s-is-alarmingly-unprepared-for-zoonotic-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zoonotic</a> pathogens. Common culprits include <em>Campylobacter</em>, <em>salmonella</em>, and certain strains of <em>Escherichia coli</em>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Healthy animals can carry these microorganisms without displaying any signs of sickness. However, the microbes may contaminate food during processes like slaughter, milking, or egg collection, significantly raising the risk of infection for humans.</p>



<p>Given these potential dangers, Dr. Wichmann-Schauer underscores the importance of avoiding raw consumption of such products, particularly among those most susceptible to infection. She noted that “especially very young children, very old people, people whose body’s defences are weakened by previous illness or pregnant women” should never eat these foods raw.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Yet even for the general population, thorough cooking is critical for ensuring safety. “If a product is heated to at least 70 degrees Celsius uniformly throughout for at least two minutes, then we can assume that most existing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-pandemic-looms-as-pathogens-move-from-wild-plants-to-crops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pathogens</a> have been killed,” said Dr. Wichmann-Schauer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-common-risks-in-the-kitchen">Common risks in the kitchen</h2>



<p>Cross-contamination is another formidable hurdle. The direct transfer of bacteria from one item - often raw foods - to another is a frequent source of infection.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, using the same cutting board or knife for raw meat and fresh vegetables, without proper cleaning, allows germs from the meat to infiltrate the vegetables. A salad that harbors these undetected pathogens can then provoke serious illness upon consumption.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Dr. Wichmann-Schauer emphasized that cleanliness in the kitchen and the correct handling of food are essential, advocating practices such as washing hands frequently, separating utensils for raw and ready-to-eat products, and sanitizing all surfaces thoroughly between uses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lack-of-awareness-about-kitchen-risks">Lack of awareness about kitchen risks</h2>



<p>Despite the severity of these risks, public awareness remains focused on more visible or widely publicized threats. The concern about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-steadily-increasing-in-freshwater-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microplastics</a>, for instance, may overshadow the persistent and pervasive threat of pathogens in the home kitchen.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While substances like microplastics or pesticide residues indeed merit attention, the data show that microbial contamination likely contributes to a more immediate and frequent risk profile.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the BfR, bridging this awareness gap is vital to preventing unnecessary illnesses that could be mitigated through improved personal habits and hygiene measures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preventing-foodborne-illnesses-nbsp">Preventing foodborne illnesses&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In practice, preventing foodborne diseases involves a comprehensive approach to safe food handling - one that extends from the point of purchase to the moment of consumption.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Storing raw meat separately in sealed containers, refrigerating perishables promptly, and regularly cleaning refrigerators and kitchen tools are all essential steps.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For particularly vulnerable populations, additional precautions, such as consistently verifying cooking temperatures, become even more critical. These measures serve to reduce the survival and spread of harmful microorganisms in domestic environments.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the strong emphasis on kitchen hygiene is not about generating undue alarm but reinforcing a set of simple, practical habits that can save lives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By recognizing the gravity of seemingly trivial oversights, consumers and households can better protect themselves, reducing the incidence of foodborne illnesses and fostering a safer food culture overall.</p>

<p>In a collaborative effort between geneticists and archaeologists, new evidence about the structure of Iron Age society has been uncovered. At the heart of this discovery lies the surprising and influential role of women in both social and political arenas.</p>



<p>Their findings stem from an extensive DNA analysis conducted in Dorset, Southern England, where they sequenced over 50 ancient genomes from burial sites used before and after the Roman Conquest in the year 43 CE.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-women-in-the-iron-age">Power of women in the Iron Age</h2>



<p>The genetic data opened up a new narrative, revealing a society built around strong female-lineage.</p>



<p>"We reconstructed a family tree with many different branches and found most members traced their maternal lineage back to a single woman, who would have lived centuries before. In contrast, relationships through the father's line were almost absent," explained Dr. Lara Cassidy, assistant professor in <a href="https://www.tcd.ie/Genetics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trinity College Dublin's</a> Department of Genetics and the leader of the study.</p>



<p>Such a discovery alters our understanding of societal norms during that time, and indicates that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-women-were-not-just-gatherers-they-were-hunters-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">women</a> held sway in both political and social aspects.</p>



<p>"This tells us that husbands moved to join their wives' communities upon marriage, with land potentially passed down through the female line," Cassidy added.</p>



<p>"This is the first time this type of system has been documented in European prehistory and it predicts female social and political empowerment. It's relatively rare in modern societies, but this might not always have been the case."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-matrilocality-in-iron-age-society">"Matrilocality" in Iron Age society</h2>



<p>More astonishingly, this form of social organization, known as "matrilocality," was not exclusive to Dorset.</p>



<p>After scrutinizing earlier genetic surveys, the team found echoes of the same pattern throughout Iron Age Britain.</p>



<p>"Across Britain we saw cemeteries where most individuals were maternally descended from a small set of female ancestors," remarked Dan Bradley, professor of population genetics in Trinity's Department of Genetics, and co-author of the study. </p>



<p>"In Yorkshire, for example, one dominant matriline had been established before 400 BCE. To our surprise, this was a widespread phenomenon with deep roots on the island," he added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-iron-age-the-basics">Understanding the Iron Age -- the basics</h2>



<p>The Iron Age was an exciting period in ancient history when people began using iron to make tools, weapons, and everyday items instead of relying on bronze or stone. </p>



<p>This shift was a game-changer because iron was more durable and widely available, allowing communities to build <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-shift-to-farming-may-have-influenced-our-ancestors-height/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stronger farms</a>, better homes, and more effective weapons. </p>



<p>With these advancements, societies grew bigger and more complex, leading to the rise of powerful kingdoms and empires. </p>



<p>Farming became more efficient, which meant more food was available, supporting larger populations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/beer-iron-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sparking innovations</a> in various aspects of daily life.</p>



<p>Different regions around the world entered the Iron Age at their own pace, but it generally took place between 1200 BCE and 500 BCE in places like Europe and the Near East, drifting into the first century CE. </p>



<p>During this time, trade routes expanded as people exchanged iron goods and ideas, fostering cultural exchanges and technological progress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-archaeological-discoveries">Archaeological discoveries</h2>



<p>The team tapped into a rich vein of well-preserved burials in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-tracks-discovered-on-uks-dinosaur-highway/">Dorset</a>, which is a rarity in Britain. The local inhabitants of the time, known by the Romans as "Durotriges," had distinct burial customs that led to this abundance of data.</p>



<p>The village of Winterborne Kingston, amusingly nicknamed "Duropolis," was one of the excavation sites where the more elaborately decorated burials were usually those of women.</p>



<p>"Beyond archaeology, knowledge of Iron Age Britain has come primarily from the Greek and Roman writers, but they are not always considered the most trustworthy," observed Dr. Miles Russell, the excavation's director and co-author of the study.</p>

<p>"That said, their commentary on British women is remarkable in light of these findings. When the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-ancient-romans-made-such-incredibly-durable-concrete-is-no-longer-a-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Romans</a> arrived, they were astonished to find women occupying positions of power. Two of the earliest recorded rulers were queens - Boudica and Cartimandua - who commanded armies," Russel added.</p>



<p>"It's been suggested that the Romans exaggerated the liberties of British women to paint a picture of an untamed society. But archaeology, and now genetics, implies women were influential in many spheres of Iron Age life. Indeed, it is possible that maternal ancestry was the primary shaper of group identities."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-digging-deeper-into-the-past">Digging deeper into the past</h2>



<p>Beyond the insights into societal structure, the research from <a href="https://www.bournemouth.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bournemouth University</a> also picked up previously unnoticed waves of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-dna-reveals-human-migration-patterns-in-first-millennium-ad/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">migration</a> into coastal southern England during the Iron Age.</p>



<p>A re-examination of the arrival of the Celtic language in Britain is now on the horizon.</p>



<p>"Migration into Britain during the later Bronze Age has previously been detected, leading some to hypothesize that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-reached-the-faroe-islands-much-earlier-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Celtic</a> language arrived during this period. But our results point towards substantial cross-channel mobility during the Iron Age as well," Cassidy concluded.</p>



<p>"Narrowing down the arrival time of Celtic will be difficult. Indeed, it is quite possible that Celtic languages were introduced to Britain on more than one occasion."</p>



<p>This investigation into the past has thus brought forth unexpected insights into the role of women, and has shed light on a crucial piece of Iron Age societal structure while also opening up new pathways for understanding Britain's historical timelines.</p>



<p>The full study was published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-04214-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a></em>.</p>

<p>The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns"><strong>Genetic vulnerability patterns</strong></h2>



<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications"><strong>Public health implications</strong></h2>



<p>These findings, published in <em><a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a></em>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Additionally, researchers found that protein production and gene expression begin to fall out of sync as we age. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, cellular reprogramming, and senolytic therapies, are opening new possibilities for extending healthspan. Companies develop treatments targeting aging's fundamental mechanisms rather than just managing age-related diseases.</p>



<p>The Stanford findings provide a roadmap for implementing preventive measures. Rather than waiting for symptoms, people can prepare for and potentially mitigate these predictable aging waves.</p>



<p>As aging understanding evolves, one thing becomes clear: aging isn't inevitable decline, but specific biological events we may learn to prevent or reverse. The key is recognizing when these transitions occur and taking proactive health steps during vulnerable periods.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>

<p>"We found that global blockade of the rat periaqueductal gray with either muscimol or lidocaine interfered with ticklishness and play," the research team reported in their study.</p>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
