<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>The idea of removing old, inflammatory cells to extend life has fascinated scientists for years. These cells, called senescent cells, accumulate as we age. </p>



<p>Senescent cells stop dividing, have damaged DNA, and cause inflammation, which is linked to the presence of diseases such as diabetes, dementia, and heart conditions. </p>



<p>While getting rid of aging cells in animals has been shown to extend lifespan, new research shows it’s not always that simple.</p>



<p>Researchers at the University of Connecticut (UConn) recently published a study in&nbsp;<em>Nature Aging</em>&nbsp;that takes a closer look at the role of senescent cells.</p>



<p>They found that not all of these cells are bad - some play helpful roles, like aiding wound healing. This discovery challenges the idea that all senescent cells are harmful and should be eliminated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-senescent-cells">What are senescent cells?</h2>



<p>These are cells that have stopped dividing and are no longer functioning like normal, healthy cells. They accumulate in the body as we age and are often linked to various <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harvard-scientists-fountain-of-youth-pill-sparks-controversy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">age-related diseases</a>.</p>



<p>While they cause inflammation and can contribute to disease, some senescent cells actually have useful roles. For instance, they can help with tissue repair and regeneration in some cases.</p>



<p>“Senescent cells are not homogenous. They have different characteristics and functions, and might be very different in many ways," explained Ming Xu, an assistant professor at the <a href="https://uconn.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UConn</a> Center on Aging and the Department of Genetics &amp; Genome Sciences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-types-of-senescent-cells">Two types of senescent cells</h2>



<p>Ming Xu and his team - including Ph.D. student Nathan Gasek, graduate student Junyu Zhu, and postdoctoral researcher Pengyi Yan - focused on two types of senescent cells.</p>



<p>These groups are identified based on the presence of two genes: p16 and p21. Earlier studies have shown that removing either type can make mice <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/epigenetic-dna-clocks-predict-biological-age-more-accurately/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">live longer</a>. But their roles in the body vary a lot.</p>



<p>The team wanted to learn more about p21 cells, especially their role in wound healing. By removing p21 cells from young mice with skin wounds, they found something surprising. </p>



<p>The wounds healed about 25% faster in female mice, but the effect wasn’t seen in males. This finding is the opposite of what happens with p16 cells, which earlier research showed also help with wound healing.</p>



<p>Interestingly, p21 cells are often found in connective tissue, skin, and immune cells. They have a unique pro-inflammatory profile that sets them apart from p16 cells. This highlights the complexity of senescent cells and why a one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with them represents an oversimplification.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-research">Significance of the research </h2>



<p>This research has big implications for anti-aging therapies. Instead of simply trying to eliminate all senescent cells, scientists can now focus on targeting the harmful ones while keeping the helpful ones. </p>



<p>This could lead to better treatments for aging-related <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-cells-could-be-used-to-slow-down-or-even-reverse-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">issues</a> and faster wound healing.</p>



<p>“The investigators hope their study can bring attention to others in the field about the diversity of cellular senescence and the importance of thoroughly evaluating the roles of various senescent cell populations across a broad spectrum of conditions,” noted the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-developing-drugs-to-target-aging-cells">Developing drugs to target aging cells</h2>



<p>The UConn team plans to dig deeper into how p21 cells affect wound <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ketogenic-diet-may-help-the-body-kill-cancer-cells/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healing</a> in conditions like diabetes and advanced aging. </p>



<p>They also want to develop drugs that can specifically target different types of senescent cells. This could revolutionize how we treat aging and related diseases.</p>



<p>This study reminds us that senescent cells aren’t all bad. They’re more like a mixed bag - some harm us, while others help us heal.</p>



<p>By understanding their diversity, scientists can create smarter, more precise treatments that improve health and extend life without unwanted side effects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-roles-of-senescent-cells">Additional roles of senescent cells</h2>



<p>While the study focused on the role of senescent cells in aging and wound healing, these cells have other crucial functions that are important for the body.</p>



<p>Beyond just causing inflammation, senescent cells can play key roles in maintaining tissue integrity and regulating certain processes in the body.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tissue-regeneration">Tissue regeneration</h3>



<p>Senescent cells contribute to the regeneration of tissues after injury. They help by secreting factors that promote the healing of damaged areas, which is crucial for proper tissue repair. In some cases, these cells can help prevent further tissue degeneration.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-immune-system-modulation">Immune system modulation</h3>



<p>Some types of senescent cells can influence the immune system by producing signals that either activate or suppress immune responses. </p>



<p>This can be important for controlling infections or regulating chronic inflammation in the body, especially as we age.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cancer-suppression">Cancer suppression</h3>



<p>In certain situations, senescent cells may help suppress the growth of cancer cells by preventing damaged cells from dividing. </p>



<p>This process, known as "cellular senescence," can act as a protective mechanism against the development of tumors, although its role is complex and context-dependent.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stem-cell-regulation">Stem cell regulation</h3>



<p>Senescent cells can also interact with stem cells, which are responsible for generating new cells in the body. </p>



<p>They can help maintain the balance between the activation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drugs-targeting-gut-cells-not-brain-cells-are-better-at-treating-depression-and-anxiety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stem cells</a> and their dormancy, ensuring proper regeneration and preventing overgrowth, which can lead to cancer.</p>



<p>Understanding these additional functions of senescent cells highlights the importance of maintaining a balance in how we approach treatments aimed at targeting these cells. </p>

Not all aging cells are bad, some actually help to heal the body

<p>Premature birth, though a medical marvel in survival, brings unique challenges. Premature babies, often the tiniest among us, face an elevated risk of health and life challenges. Not only do they have a slightly higher risk of illness-related mortality, but they also face a higher likelihood of death from road traffic accidents, substance abuse, and suicide.</p>



<p>These insights come from a major Nordic study led by Professor Kari Risnes at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).</p>



<p>The study analyzed the birth data and causes of death for nearly 37,000 individuals aged 15 to 50, who were born prematurely across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. </p>



<p>One particular finding surprised researchers: prematurely born women have a significantly higher risk of dying from suicide than those born at full term.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-suicide-risk-in-women-born-prematurely">Suicide risk in women born prematurely</h2>



<p>The study revealed that women born 7 to 17 weeks prematurely have an 80% higher risk of dying by suicide when compared to individuals born at full term.</p>



<p>Interestingly, this heightened risk was not observed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-increased-premature-birth-risk-by-60/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prematurely born</a> men. This finding challenges conventional statistics where men dominate suicide rates globally, including in Norway and Europe.</p>



<p>“We don’t know why premature[ly born] women now turn out to be at almost the same level [as men],” said Professor Risnes, an expert in paediatric epidemiology at <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NTNU</a>.</p>



<p>Prematurely born individuals, regardless of gender, often carry what Risnes refers to as "extra baggage." These challenges can include mental health issues, social difficulties, and vulnerability to certain diseases. </p>



<p>While many prematurely born individuals thrive, these underlying risks persist throughout their lives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-premature-babies-lifetime-of-vulnerability">Premature babies: Lifetime of vulnerability</h2>



<p>Premature birth, defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation, affects about 6% of the population. Advances in neonatal care have significantly increased survival rates for these infants.</p>



<p>Today, more than 80% of babies born from 28 weeks survive. However, survival often comes with long-term health and social challenges.</p>



<p>“Survival rates have really increased, but some people born <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-takes-a-major-toll-on-childrens-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prematurely</a> require more follow-up, and they need everyone around them to understand that they might experience challenges,” said Risnes.</p>



<p>Previous studies have shown that prematurely born individuals are more susceptible to heart disease, chronic pulmonary conditions, diabetes, and mental disorders. </p>



<p>These vulnerabilities may stem partly from lower cognitive functions, which encompass decision-making, memory, and behavioral regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unnatural-deaths-and-gender-differences">Unnatural deaths and gender differences</h2>



<p>For <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toxic-chemicals-from-food-production-pass-into-the-human-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">young people</a>, external causes such as road traffic accidents, suicide, and substance abuse are the leading causes of death. </p>



<p>Men generally have a threefold higher risk of these sudden, violent deaths than women. However, the Nordic study uncovered a startling exception: women born prematurely exhibit suicide rates that are comparable to those of men in the general population.</p>



<p>“The day we saw these girls right up here at the top of the graphs together with the boys, I must say, we were very surprised,” said Risnes. “We checked and double-checked to make sure, so we are confident the findings are reliable.”</p>



<p>While the reasons remain unclear, this revelation highlights the need for further investigation into the specific vulnerabilities of prematurely born girls.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-premature-birth-and-suicide-rates">Premature birth and suicide rates</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study highlighted differences among the Nordic countries. For example, young Swedish women born prematurely have suicide rates similar to men. </p>



<p>In Denmark, however, suicide rates among prematurely born individuals are lower, with Danish men’s rates aligning with those of Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian women. </p>



<p>Prematurely born Finnish men showed higher vulnerability to fatal road traffic accidents and substance abuse deaths.</p>



<p>These disparities suggest that cultural, healthcare, or societal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/late-fatherhood-becoming-more-popular-potential-health-risks-for-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">factors</a> may also influence outcomes for prematurely born individuals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-early-detection-and-support">Need for early detection and support</h2>



<p>Despite their unique challenges, many prematurely born children and young adults go unnoticed by healthcare systems and schools.</p>



<p>“We feel compelled to delve deeper,” said Risnes. The researchers emphasize the need to identify these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/living-near-oil-and-gas-sites-linked-to-hidden-health-issues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vulnerabilities</a> early and ensure adequate follow-up and support.</p>



<p>The current Norwegian guidelines for premature infant follow-up, last updated in 2007, only cover children up to the age of five. </p>



<p>However, challenges often emerge later in life, particularly when children start school. "That is when parents feel they need support the most,” said Risnes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accepting-premature-birth-and-suicide-risks">Accepting premature birth and suicide risks</h2>



<p>Risnes acknowledges that this research could stigmatize prematurely born individuals, which is a concern. However, she emphasizes the importance of understanding these findings to promote greater acceptance of individual differences.</p>



<p>“Perhaps we, as researchers, can also help highlight that we all have strengths and vulnerabilities. In this way, we can contribute to society better understanding and accepting that people are different,” she said.</p>



<p>The findings from this study mark an essential step in understanding the long-term vulnerabilities associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/odors-influence-newborn-brain-growth-in-the-first-week/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">premature birth</a>. </p>



<p>The researchers aim to update guidelines and provide more tailored support to individuals who were born prematurely. Further studies are necessary to uncover why prematurely born women are at such a high risk of suicide and to explore interventions that can mitigate this risk.</p>



<p>As medical advances continue to improve survival rates for premature babies, society must ensure that these individuals receive the support they need in order to thrive throughout their lives.</p>

<p>Raw milk, often valued for being natural and nutritious, is gaining popularity among health-conscious individuals. But a recent study from Stanford University brings up serious concerns about the safety of this product.</p>



<p>The research reveals that the flu virus can survive in refrigerated raw milk for up to five days. This discovery comes as outbreaks of bird flu in dairy cattle spark fears about a potential pandemic.</p>



<p>"This work highlights the potential risk of avian influenza transmission through consumption of raw milk and the importance of milk pasteurization," said Professor Alexandria Boehm, the study's senior author.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-raw-milk-a-risky-trend">Raw milk: A risky trend</h2>



<p>More than 14 million Americans consume raw milk each year. Unlike pasteurized milk, raw milk isn’t heated to kill <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-outbreak-in-domestic-cats-raises-new-concerns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">harmful pathogens</a>. </p>



<p>Advocates believe raw milk retains more nutrients, enzymes, and probiotics, which may boost immune and gut health. However, health agencies strongly warn against drinking raw milk. </p>



<p>The FDA has linked raw milk to over 200 outbreaks of illnesses. Along with the CDC, the agency emphasizes that raw milk can harbor dangerous pathogens like<em> E. coli </em>and <em>Salmonella</em>.</p>



<p>Such pathogens pose severe risks to children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flu-virus-in-cow-s-milk">Flu virus in cow's milk</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford</a> researchers studied how long the H1N1 PR8 flu virus can stay infectious in raw cow’s milk at typical refrigeration temperatures. They discovered that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-infection-equips-the-body-to-fight-off-the-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virus</a> remained infectious for up to five days.</p>



<p>“The persistence of infectious influenza virus in raw milk for days raises concerns about potential transmission pathways,” said Mengyang Zhang, co-lead author of the study.</p>



<p>“The virus could contaminate surfaces and other materials in dairy facilities, posing risks to both animals and humans.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prolonged-persistence-of-viral-rna">Prolonged persistence of viral RNA </h2>



<p>Additionally, viral RNA - the virus’s genetic material - stayed detectable in raw milk for at least 57 days. While RNA itself isn’t harmful, it complicates food safety assessments and environmental surveillance.</p>



<p>Pasteurization completely destroyed infectious flu viruses in raw milk and reduced viral RNA by 90%, but traces of RNA still lingered.</p>



<p>“The prolonged persistence of viral RNA in both raw and pasteurized milk has implications for food safety assessments and environmental surveillance,” explained Alessandro Zulli, co-lead author of the study.</p>



<p>This study builds on earlier research, funded by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, which was focused on human norovirus and the subfamily of viruses responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>



<p>The team’s work was also focused on zoonotic pathogens - <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/efforts-to-control-bird-flu-are-not-working-are-humans-next/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a> that jump from animals to humans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-need-for-better-monitoring-systems">The need for better monitoring systems </h2>



<p>Each year, flu viruses infect over 40 million people and cause more than 50,000 deaths in the U.S. alone. These viruses can move from animals to humans, as seen in the 2009-2010 swine flu pandemic, which caused up to 1.4 billion infections worldwide.</p>



<p>While bird flu hasn’t posed the same threat yet, recent cases in cattle raise serious concerns about its transmission through raw milk and other dairy products.</p>



<p>This study highlights the need for better monitoring systems, especially as bird flu spreads among livestock. Improved surveillance could help public health officials respond faster and reduce risks to people and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-bird-flu-manage-to-infect-mammal-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a>. </p>



<p>Earlier research by the team showed how wastewater analysis could detect flu activity in nearby cattle populations.</p>



<p>“We never thought wastewater could be used to detect and respond to zoonotic pathogens in the community,” said Professor Boehm. “It has been amazing to see our wastewater detection work scale across the U.S. and globally.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-destroying-flu-virus-in-raw-milk">Destroying flu virus in raw milk</h2>



<p>The findings emphasize the critical role of pasteurization in ensuring milk safety. Policymakers and health officials should consider these results if they wish to strengthen food safety protocols and surveillance systems.</p>



<p>As zoonotic diseases become more common, proactive measures will help prevent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-covid-pandemic-influence-the-seasonal-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outbreaks</a> and protect public health. </p>



<p>Raw milk may appeal to some for its natural benefits, but science shows that its risks far outweigh its rewards. By understanding these dangers and sticking to pasteurized products, we can make safer choices for ourselves and our families.</p>

<p>The world beneath the ocean waves is home to countless mysteries, and frogfish are among its most intriguing inhabitants. </p>



<p>These elusive masters of disguise, a subgroup of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sea-anglerfish-defy-evolutionary-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anglerfish</a>, have evolved unique adaptations to thrive in diverse marine environments and make their presence felt in fascinating ways.</p>



<p>Frogfish are famously known for their deceptive charms. The clever and effective use of elaborate camouflage allows frogfish to blend seamlessly with their surroundings and renders them nearly invisible to unsuspecting prey.</p>



<p>Their dine-and-dash tactics revolve around catching small fish and crustaceans off guard. In this approach, they embody the notion that everything is fair in love and war - and survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-frogfish-dorsal-fins">The role of frogfish dorsal fins</h2>



<p>The secret behind the successful hunting strategy of frogfish lies in the magic of their dorsal fins, which perform crucial functions.</p>



<p>While the dorsal fins located in the center of their bodies are used to exhibit threatening behavior, the back fin offers stability and propulsion while swimming. </p>



<p>The real showstopper, however, is the front dorsal fin or the "illicium," which is essentially a rod-like structure with a lure or "eska" that bears an uncanny resemblance to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-simplest-organisms-like-worms-have-unique-personalities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clam worm</a>.</p>



<p>Much like a seasoned angler, the frogfish uses the illicium to wave the eska around as a tantalizing bait.</p>



<p>The ill-fated prey fish are deceived into mistaking the eska for a meal, only to be engulfed by frogfish in a single, swift gulp. Despite this seemingly simple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-in-plain-sight-brilliant-hunting-strategy-of-the-trumpetfish-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hunting technique</a>, the mechanical processes behind it are complex and curious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neuronal-mechanism-for-fishing-behavior">Neuronal mechanism for fishing behavior</h2>



<p>In a recently published study, researchers from <a href="https://www.agr.nagoya-u.ac.jp/index-e.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nagoya University's Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences</a> led by Professor Naoyuki Yamamoto set out to explore the unique neuronal mechanisms that drive the unusual hunting behavior of frogfish.</p>



<p>The scientists discovered a population of specialized motor neurons in the illicium, which they referred to as "fishing motor neurons."</p>



<p>It turns out that these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-flies-can-walk-jump-and-dance-using-the-same-motor-neurons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">motor neurons</a> enable the fishing behavior of frogfish by making the illicium different from the other dorsal fins.</p>



<p>To investigate, the researchers used tracer injections to visualize motor neurons that were situated in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. These particular neurons control swimming movements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-migration-of-frogfish-motor-neurons">Migration of frogfish motor neurons</h2>



<p>Yamamoto’s team was amazed to find that the illicium's motor neurons reside in the dorsolateral zone. These are distinct from the neurons of the second, third, and fourth dorsal fins, which are located in the ventrolateral zone of the ventral horn.</p>



<p>The researchers compared the motor neurons of frogfish with those of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-grew-larger-as-the-oceans-cooled-over-millennia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">white-spotted pygmy filefish</a> – a species that uses the first dorsal fin for warding off competition and predators rather than for fishing. </p>



<p>The results suggested that the motor neurons used by frogfish for hunting had shifted during the evolution of their function.</p>



<p>"This is an extremely rare case in which motor neurons for the illicium were originally dorsal fin motor neurons, but their location was shifted to serve a role completely different from their original function," said Yamamoto.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-human-evolution">Implications for human evolution</h2>



<p>These fascinating revelations, though seemingly exclusive to the marine world, may also be relevant to life on land. According to Yamamoto, these findings shed light on human evolution as well.</p>



<p>By drawing parallels between the motor neuron organization in frogfish and that in other vertebrates, this study highlights the evolutionary connections shared across diverse species.</p>



<p>"While we, as land animals, do not have fins, our forelimbs and hindlimbs are similar to the pectoral and ventral fins in the light of their distribution in the spinal ventral horn, and our ancestors also once had dorsal fins," noted Yamamoto.</p>



<p>"The organization of different groups of motor neuron groups is similar among vertebrates. In vertebrates, there are several species with highly specialized behavior."</p>



<p>"Our study provides a new point of view on motor neurons, and we hope it prompts similar studies in other species that lead scientists to understand the rules that govern their organization."</p>



<p>Yamamoto hopes that these findings will serve as a catalyst for further research into motor neuron organization across species, which could deepen our understanding of the intricate connections within the evolutionary tapestry of life.</p>



<p>The full study was published in the journal <em><a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cne.25674" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal of Comparative Neurology</a></em>.</p>

<p>Life often presents us with complex situations requiring decisions influenced by multiple factors. Our ability to adapt and make sense of these ambiguous scenarios is largely dependent on specific brain regions: the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the dorsal hippocampus (DH).&nbsp;</p>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California Santa Barbara</a> (UCSB) have delved into the workings of these regions, revealing their collaborative roles in resolving ambiguity and enabling rapid learning.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-context-dependent-decision-making">Context-dependent decision-making</h2>



<p>The findings, published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.10.049" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Current Biology</em></a>, provide new insights into how these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-creativity-start-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a> areas help us navigate context-dependent scenarios and adapt our behavior accordingly.</p>



<p>“I would argue that that’s the foundation of cognition,” said senior author Ron Keiflin, a neuroscientist at UCSB. “That’s what makes us not behave like simple robots, always responding in the same manner to every stimulus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our ability to understand that the meaning of certain stimuli is context-dependent is what gives us flexibility; it is what allows us to act in a situation-appropriate manner.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-context-that-informs-decisions">The context that informs decisions</h2>



<p>Consider the act of deciding whether to answer a ringing phone. Your response depends on factors such as where you are, who might be calling, and the time of day.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These elements form the “context,” which informs your decision. According to Keiflin, this cognitive flexibility stems from the interplay between the OFC and DH.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The OFC, located just above the eyes, is associated with decision-making, reward valuation, and planning, while the DH, deeper in the brain, is crucial for spatial navigation and memory.</p>



<p>Both regions contribute to what Keiflin describes as a “cognitive map” - a mental representation of the causal structure of the environment. This map enables the brain to simulate outcomes, predict consequences, and guide actions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite their importance, the specific roles of these regions in contextual disambiguation - determining how stimuli change meaning depending on the context - had not been explicitly tested until now.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-auditory-cues-in-different-contexts">Auditory cues in different contexts</h2>



<p>To investigate, the researchers designed an experiment involving rats exposed to auditory cues in two different contexts: a brightly lit room and a dark room. Each sound had a context-dependent meaning.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For example, one sound signaled a reward (sugar water) only in the light, while another signaled a reward only in the dark.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over time, the rats learned to associate each sound with the correct context, demonstrating their understanding by licking the reward cup in anticipation of a treat in one setting but not the other.</p>



<p>The researchers then used chemogenetics to temporarily disable the OFC or DH during the task. When the OFC was deactivated, the rats were no longer able to use the context to predict rewards and regulate their behavior.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, disabling the DH had little impact on performance, a surprising result given its known role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-our-brain-form-long-term-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory</a> and spatial processing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-enhanced-by-prior-knowledge">Learning enhanced by prior knowledge</h2>



<p>While the DH seemed dispensable for recalling learned context-dependent relationships, it proved crucial for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning</a> new ones.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If I walked into an advanced math lecture, I would understand - and learn - very little. But someone more mathematically knowledgeable would be able to understand the material, which would greatly facilitate learning,” Keiflin explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Similarly, once the rats had developed a “cognitive map” of context-dependent relationships, they were able to learn new ones much faster. Training time dropped from over four months to just a few days.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-regions-working-together">Brain regions working together</h2>



<p>Using the same chemogenetic approach, the researchers found that disabling either the OFC or DH impaired the rats’ ability to apply prior knowledge to learn new relationships.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The OFC was essential for applying contextual knowledge to regulate immediate behavior, while the DH enabled the rapid acquisition of new context-dependent relationships.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This dual role highlights the complementary functions of these brain regions in supporting both decision-making and learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-neuroscience-and-education">Implications for neuroscience and education</h2>



<p>According to Keiflin, the fact that prior knowledge influences learning is well known in psychology and education, but is often ignored in neuroscience research.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding how the brain uses prior knowledge to facilitate learning could inform educational strategies and interventions for individuals with learning difficulties.</p>



<p>The study also sheds light on the distinct roles of the OFC and DH. While the OFC helps regulate behavior based on contextual knowledge, the DH is more critical for using past experiences to learn new relationships.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Together, these regions enable the brain to adapt to complex, ever-changing environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-ability-to-use-context-for-decisions">Brain’s ability to use context for decisions</h2>



<p>The research highlights the importance of contextual understanding in navigating daily life. Whether it’s deciding to answer a ringing phone or adapting to new information, the brain’s ability to resolve ambiguity is foundational to human cognition.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By unraveling the roles of the OFC and DH, this study not only advances our understanding of brain function but also underscores the intricate mechanisms that enable learning and decision-making.</p>



<p>This knowledge opens avenues for exploring how disruptions in these processes may contribute to conditions such as anxiety or decision-making impairments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As Keiflin concluded, “a better neurobiological understanding of this rapid learning and inference of context-dependent relations is critical, as this form of learning is probably much more representative of the human learning experience.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings set the stage for future research on how these brain regions interact in complex, real-world scenarios, paving the way for potential applications in education and mental health.</p>

<p>Among the many effects of global warming this century, the melting of permafrost stands out. Permafrost, found beneath 15% of the northern hemisphere, is composed of frozen organic material that has stored carbon for millennia. </p>



<p>Rising global temperatures prompt questions about how much permafrost will thaw and how much carbon it will release.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-permafrost-in-the-carbon-cycle">The role of permafrost in the carbon cycle</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/permafrost-is-becoming-a-source-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Permafrost</a> is soil, rock, or sediment that has been frozen for two or more consecutive years. It is typically found in polar regions, such as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-permafrost-melt-devastating-role-accelerating-global-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>, and at high altitudes. In regions where temperatures dip below -5°C, it remains frozen permanently.</p>



<p>During the Last Glacial Maximum, permafrost covered vast areas, but today’s warming - especially in polar regions - threatens its stability.</p>



<p>The Arctic has been warming almost four times faster than the global average since 1979, raising concerns about thawing permafrost releasing carbon dioxide and methane, which would worsen global warming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modeling-thawing-permafrost">Modeling thawing permafrost</h2>



<p>Understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-permafrost-thaw-in-alaska-threatens-global-climate-balance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">permafrost's</a> future involves complex modeling. A recent study published in the journal <em>Earth’s Future</em> combines observational data with a biogeochemical model to predict how much carbon thawing permafrost might release.</p>



<p>Study lead author Lei Liu from <a href="https://english.zzu.edu.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Zhengzhou University</a> and colleagues incorporated processes such as deep-soil carbon decomposition up to six meters below the surface, doubling the depth of previous studies.</p>



<p>The model also used detailed profiles of soil organic carbon derived from observational datasets. It estimates that the Northern Hemisphere’s permafrost contained 563 gigatons (Gt) of carbon between 2010 and 2015, spread over an area of 14.4 million square kilometers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scenarios-of-permafrost-thaw">Scenarios of permafrost thaw</h2>



<p>The study considered two scenarios based on Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs):</p>



<ol start="1" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>SSP126</strong>: An optimistic scenario limiting global warming to 2.0°C.</li>



<li><strong>SSP585</strong>: A pessimistic scenario assuming continued fossil fuel reliance.</li>
</ol>



<p>Under SSP126, 119 Gt of carbon would thaw by 2100, reducing permafrost ecosystem carbon by 3.4 Gt. In contrast, SSP585 would see 252 Gt of carbon thawed, with a 15 Gt reduction in ecosystem carbon.</p>



<p>The study projects that only 4% to 8% of this thawed carbon will release into the atmosphere by 2100. This translates to a maximum of 10 Gt of carbon under SSP126 and 20 Gt under SSP585. For context, human activities in 2023 emitted 11.3 Gt of carbon. </p>



<p>While significant, the projected emissions from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-regions-are-rapidly-warming-with-global-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">permafrost</a> thawing remain smaller than annual human emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-release-due-to-permafrost-thaw">Carbon release due to permafrost thaw</h2>



<p>Thawing permafrost contributes to the carbon cycle in multiple ways. Decomposing organic matter releases nitrogen, which plants can absorb, stimulating growth. </p>



<p>The team’s model showed that nitrogen availability could increase vegetation nitrogen stocks by 10 to 26 million tons and carbon stocks in plants by 0.4 to 1.6 Gt under the two scenarios.</p>



<p>However, this increased plant growth does not fully offset carbon losses from thawed permafrost. Furthermore, thawing alters plant species composition and ecosystem dynamics, with broader implications for the carbon and nitrogen cycles. </p>



<p>The study highlights deeper complications, such as abrupt thaw events, root deepening, and microbial activity - which could accelerate carbon release.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitigation-challenges-and-uncertainties">Mitigation challenges and uncertainties</h2>



<p>The study highlights the need for decisive action. For warming to cease, human emissions must drop to zero. </p>



<p>As long as warming persists, more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-will-changing-tundra-landscapes-affect-earths-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">permafrost</a> will thaw, creating additional challenges for climate change mitigation. High-latitude and high-altitude regions remain areas of significant uncertainty, where warming impacts and feedback mechanisms are more difficult to predict.</p>



<p>While models like this one improve our understanding, they remain projections that are dependent on socioeconomic choices made by humanity. Will we pursue aggressive climate action or continue with business as usual? The fate of permafrost - and its carbon - rests largely in human hands.</p>

<p>Turns out, giraffes have a distaste for inclines. The tall, majestic, and gracefully lumbering creatures of Africa's grasslands aren’t fans of hilly terrain and actively avoid slopes greater than 20 degrees. </p>



<p>These findings, set to be presented at the British Ecological Society’s (BES) Annual Meeting in Liverpool, underline critical implications for giraffe conservation efforts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giraffes-avoid-steep-slopes">Giraffes avoid steep slopes</h2>



<p>In a new study, experts monitored the movements of 33 GPS-collared <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giraffes-are-suffering-a-silent-extinction-and-need-more-protection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">giraffes</a> in South Africa.</p>



<p>The results showed that giraffes avoid steep slopes due to the energy required to navigate them and the risk of falling. Researchers found that giraffes tolerate gradients of up to 12° only when these lead to areas with favorable vegetation.</p>



<p>“We often think of giraffes roaming in large, flat grassland savannas in Africa, but that's not really their true habitat. There are also rolling hills, deep riverbeds, and high plateaus,” noted Jessica Granweiler, a PhD candidate at the <a href="https://www.manchester.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Manchester</a> and the study presenter.</p>



<p>“Our study shows that giraffes much prefer flat areas. They will tolerate some steepness to access food, but simply cannot access areas above a 20° gradient. It's quite shocking when you look at distribution maps.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-challenges-of-steep-terrain">Conservation challenges of steep terrain </h2>



<p>The findings reveal a stark mismatch between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-giraffe-day-2024-a-towering-celebration-of-the-gentle-giants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">giraffes</a>’ preferred habitats, including flat areas and gentle slopes, and the locations of many protected reserves.</p>



<p>By applying the 20° gradient threshold, the researchers calculated the amount of inaccessible land for giraffes in key African countries. For example, in Namibia and Tanzania, nearly 8,000 km² of habitat, about half the size of Wales, is unusable for giraffes.</p>



<p>Similarly, in Kenya and South Africa, about 4,000 km² of land is inaccessible. Alarmingly, one-third of the countries analyzed had more unsuitable terrain within protected reserves than outside them.</p>



<p>“If a reserve is, say, 200 hectares but has a large mountain in the middle, from a giraffe’s perspective, this reserve is not 200 hectares anymore. We need to start including topography in giraffe conservation planning and habitat assessments, especially for small fenced reserves,” said Granweiler.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giraffe-conservation-must-address-slopes">Giraffe conservation must address slopes</h2>



<p>Current habitat suitability models often focus on factors such as vegetation, predation, and human disturbance - neglecting the role of topography.</p>



<p>This oversight may result in conservation efforts that fail to meet giraffes’ ecological needs. The study highlights the necessity of integrating geographic and physical limitations into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-four-unique-giraffe-species-across-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat assessments</a>.</p>



<p>“Steep and rugged environments are challenging for large-bodied animals, like giraffes. Unfortunately, natural and protected areas are more likely to be placed in such places, which can lead to a mismatch between the landscapes animals ‘want’ to use and the landscapes that we have ‘left’ for them,” noted Professor Susanne Shultz.</p>



<p>“Incorporating geography and physical limitations in habitat assessments can help avoid conserving animals in inappropriate places.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-giraffes-around-slopes">Analyzing giraffes around slopes</h2>



<p>The research repurposed GPS data collected from 2011 to 2023 by Dr. Francois Deacon’s team at the <a href="https://www.ufs.ac.za" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of the Free State</a>, South Africa. </p>



<p>This dataset included information from 33 giraffes, comprising 10 males and 23 females, across five reserves in South Africa. By combining the GPS data with topographic maps, the researchers identified the slopes giraffes could and couldn’t navigate.</p>



<p>“The more awareness we can bring to giraffe ecology, the more research effort there will be on this species in the future,” said Dr. Francois Deacon.</p>



<p>“The fact that we are still discovering major limitations or drivers of their ecology and behaviour is worrying. But research like ours helps closing this gap in knowledge and will help better management and conservation of giraffes in the future.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bigger-picture-for-giraffe-conservation">Bigger picture for giraffe conservation</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-precarious-state-of-kordofan-giraffes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Giraffes</a> inhabit 21 African countries, but their populations have been declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. </p>



<p>Conservation initiatives are vital for their survival. This study highlights the importance of considering topography in conservation planning to ensure suitable habitats for giraffes.</p>



<p>“Giraffes are tolerant animals and resilient to many things like food availability and human pressures, but this is a scenario where they simply may not be able to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giraffes-gained-their-long-necks-for-food-not-sex/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adapt</a> due to physiological limits,” Granweiler concluded.</p>



<p>By addressing these challenges, conservationists can create more effective strategies to protect giraffes, their habitats, and the slopes they rely on.</p>

<p>For almost 60 years, mathematicians have struggled to answer the age-old question: will your sofa fit around the corner of the new place you are moving to?</p>



<p>However, Jineon Baek of Yonsei University in Korea has made a breakthrough. His 100-page proof addresses the infamous "moving sofa problem," a mathematical conundrum that’s perplexed scholars since the mid-20th century.</p>



<p>Finally, there’s clarity on what kind of furniture fits through tight corners without causing chaos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birth-of-the-moving-sofa-problem">Birth of the moving sofa problem</h2>



<p>The story <a href="https://epubs.siam.org/doi/10.1137/1008074" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">begins in 1966</a> when Austrian-Canadian mathematician Leo Moser formalized the "moving sofa problem." </p>



<p>While it might seem trivial, the puzzle taps into deep mathematical principles of combinatorics and geometry. </p>



<p>It asks a deceptively simple question: What is the largest two-dimensional shape that can navigate an L-shaped corner in a corridor of unit width?</p>



<p>Imagine trying to move a perfectly rectangular piece of furniture through a narrow hallway. A square unit fits easily, but as the object’s dimensions grow, the maneuver becomes impossible. Moser’s challenge captured the frustration of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/household-plumbing-is-full-of-microbial-communities-that-might-be-a-health-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">movers</a> everywhere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-semi-circle-sofa">Semi-circle sofa</h2>



<p>British mathematician John Hammersley took an early <a href="https://archive.org/details/hammersley1968" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crack at the problem in 1968</a>. He designed a sofa that combined a semicircle with a square featuring a semicircular bite. </p>



<p>His creation was <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finger-counting-boosts-math-skills-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mathematically efficient</a> and could maneuver around an L-shaped corner with an area of 2.2074 units. </p>



<p>Hammersley also established an upper limit of 2.8284 units, suggesting no sofa larger than that could fit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-refining-the-solution">Refining the solution</h2>



<p>Nearly 25 years later, Joseph Gerver of <a href="https://www.rutgers.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rutgers University</a> refined Hammersley’s design. By rounding edges and incorporating additional arcs, Gerver proposed a new sofa shape with an area just over 2.2195 units. </p>



<p>His solution was “locally optimal,” meaning it was the best possible shape under the constraints he defined. </p>



<p>Yet, without a universal formula for all potential sofa shapes, mathematicians couldn’t rule out the possibility of an even larger design.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solving-the-moving-sofa-problem">Solving the moving sofa problem</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S000187081830416X?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">In 2018,</a> Yoav Kallus of the <a href="https://www.santafe.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Santa Fe Institute</a> and Dan Romik from the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>, added a modern twist. </p>



<p>Using computer simulations, the team theorized that a sofa shape with an area as large as 2.37 units might be feasible. Their work reignited interest in the problem and pushed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mathematical boundaries</a> further.</p>



<p>Jineon Baek’s recent work builds on this foundation. By employing an advanced mathematical technique called an injective function, Baek mapped the key properties of Gerver’s sofa design. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acceptable-area-of-the-sofa">Acceptable area of the sofa</h2>



<p>Baek analyzed how these properties could be extended to larger dimensions, ensuring that the sofa's shape would remain viable for navigating tight spaces. </p>



<p>Through this rigorous approach, Baek conclusively demonstrated that 2.2195 units is the absolute maximum area for a sofa that can successfully pass through an L-shaped corner in a 1-unit-wide corridor. </p>



<p>While his findings are still awaiting peer review, they currently represent the most thorough and convincing resolution to this longstanding mathematical problem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-mathematical-reasoning">The power of mathematical reasoning </h2>



<p>The proof from <a href="https://www.yonsei.ac.kr/en_sc/index.jsp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yonsei University</a> might settle the question for a single L-shaped corner, but real-world challenges often involve more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astrophysicist-says-hes-cracked-the-equation-for-time-travel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complexity</a>.</p>



<p>For instance, if a second corner in the opposite direction appears, mathematicians recommend Romik’s “ambidextrous sofa,” a shape designed for dual-corner navigation.</p>



<p>While the moving sofa problem might seem niche, it highlights the power of mathematical reasoning in solving practical problems. </p>



<p>Baek’s work not only contributes to geometry and combinatorics but also showcases how abstract mathematics can have unexpected real-world applications. </p>

This is known as one's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerobic-exercise-boosts-cognitive-ability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerobic</a> capacity, and it can be improved at any stage in life by doing regular aerobic exercise.</p>



<p>Previously, good cardiorespiratory fitness has been associated with a lowered risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preventing-dementia-scientists-say-three-factors-matter-most/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a> and age-related cognitive decline.</p>



<p>The researchers set out to pinpoint precisely which cognitive faculties benefited from maintaining good cardiorespiratory fitness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-relationship-between-fitness-and-cognitive-health">Relationship between fitness and cognitive health</h2>



<p>The researchers assessed cardiorespiratory fitness among a group of 648 individuals between the ages of 65 and 80.</p>



<p>They used a treadmill running test to analyze peak oxygen consumption, a standard measurement of cardiorespiratory <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-natural-born-endurance-runners/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">endurance</a>. </p>



<p>The experts evaluated cognitive ability using a suite of validated neuropsychological tests that measured multiple domains including processing speed, working memory, visuospatial processing, episodic memory, and executive function/attentional control.</p>



<p>The results were fascinating. Even when considering factors like gender, education years, and weight, higher cardiorespiratory fitness correlated positively with better performance across all cognitive domains.</p>



<p>This was true regardless of the individual's age or whether they carried the high-risk APOE4 gene.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-cognitive-function-with-fitness">Preserving cognitive function with fitness</h2>



<p>The correlation between fitness and cognitive ability was noticeably stronger in women, those with less education, and those taking beta-blockers. The benefits were particularly notable within the domains of processing speed and executive function/attentional control.</p>

<p>The results clearly highlight the advantage of fitness for maintaining cognitive function, but how can these findings be incorporated into daily life?</p>



<p>Experts&nbsp;indicate&nbsp;that&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;moderate-to-vigorous&nbsp;levels of&nbsp;aerobic activities - whether brisk walking, jogging, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/active-commuting-cycling-to-work-linked-to-enormous-health-benefits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cycling</a>, or swimming - is beneficial for cardiorespiratory fitness.</p>



<p>According to the World Health Organization, adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Two strength training exercises per week can also support cardiorespiratory health.</p>



<p>In the case of older adults, the programs should focus on sustainable activities that are very enjoyable and easy to maintain.</p>



<p>Group classes,&nbsp;outdoor activities, or even setting&nbsp;reasonably&nbsp;achievable goals through fitness trackers might provide the needed motivation to be consistent.</p>

<p>In late September, 2024, a hurricane named Helene hit the Florida coast bringing devastating rain and fierce winds. That event did not stop at the ground level, however. </p>



<p>As NASA has announced, the International Space Station detected something unexpected above Earth’s surface -- some kind of waves pushing through the atmosphere about 55 miles above the planet.</p>



<p>These were not visible to anyone looking up from their backyard, but they were there, showing that even <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experiencing-awe-in-nature-has-a-powerful-effect-on-emotional-well-being/">powerful</a> weather down here can have a connection to unseen patterns much higher up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-invisible-atmospheric-waves">Invisible atmospheric waves</h2>



<p>High overhead, there is a layer of the atmosphere called the mesosphere. It is located roughly 31 to 55 miles above ground. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-red-sprite-lightning-captured-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The mesos</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-red-sprite-lightning-captured-from-space/">phere</a> might seem pretty far removed from everyday concerns. Still, it can be disturbed by severe weather far below.</p>



<p>On the day Helene hit, NASA’s instruments captured signs of a type of atmospheric wave, not related to the space-time ones Einstein predicted, but rather ones formed by events like hurricanes.</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.usu.edu/today/story/a-dream-realized-usu-physicist-pioneers-new-era-of-atmospheric-waves-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michael Taylor</a> from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/city-under-the-ice-secret-base-camp-found-in-greenland/">NASA</a>, this unexpected observation gives a new dimension to the way in which people think about how storms affect even the thin air at tremendous heights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strange-signature-revealed-by-the-iss">Strange signature revealed by the ISS</h2>



<p>The equipment responsible for detecting this phenomenon is the Atmospheric Wave Instrument, known as AWE. </p>



<p>Installed outside the International Space Station in 2023, it was built to observe “atmospheric glow,” a faint light from gases at high altitudes.</p>



<p>When Helene struck, AWE’s sensors picked up a pattern reminiscent of “ripples,” that revealed how the hurricane stirred the air so far above. </p>



<p>This observation extended westward from the coast, showing that the disturbance traveled far beyond the main storm zone.</p>



<p>It is not a surprise that this kind of insight emerged from a view point perched high above Earth. The ISS is an ideal spot for catching details that would never show up in ordinary weather measurements closer to home.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-weather-instrument">New weather instrument</h2>



<p>AWE’s role is to reveal connections between surface storms and the upper atmosphere. Instead of looking at just the turbulent weather patterns people know -- winds, rain, and lightning -- it looks upward. It tracks how changes below might ripple upward into the mesosphere and beyond.</p>



<p>By doing this, it can help figure out what knocks the atmosphere off its usual balance. Before AWE, these subtle patterns might have gone unnoticed, leaving big questions about how the environment <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meaningful-dream-experiences-can-boost-your-work-productivity/">works</a> as a whole.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-changes-that-can-affect-satellites">Tiny changes that can affect satellites</h2>



<p>The air up there is thin, but it still matters. When these small waves appear, they can influence conditions that matter for satellites. </p>



<p>Engineers worry about anything that might shift or change the density of air at high altitudes because satellites can run into unexpected resistance.</p>



<p>The variations are slight, but in space technology, even a tiny adjustment can mean the difference between a satellite staying safely in orbit or drifting into trouble. </p>



<p>Now, with AWE’s observations, there is a tool to help understand these subtle shifts before they become a headache.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-atmospheric-waves-matter">Why atmospheric waves matter</h2>



<p>Communication satellites, weather satellites, and even the signals people rely on for navigation can depend on stable conditions high up there. </p>



<p>Some might think the harsh environment of space operates independently from Earth’s weather.</p>



<p>That is not always true. A strong hurricane, like Helene, can trigger changes that bubble all the way up. </p>



<p>By having instruments that keep an eye on these patterns, researchers can plan better. They can figure out if a future storm might rearrange the air enough to cause problems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secrets-of-the-mesosphere">Secrets of the mesosphere</h2>



<p>Observing these waves was made possible by a set of telescopes known as the Advanced Mesospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5c-is-almost-certainly-out-of-reach/">Temperature</a> Mapper (AMTM). </p>



<p>NASA has indicated that AMTM is sensitive enough to catch details that might slip past ordinary sensors.</p>



<p>The mesosphere’s cold temperatures - around -150°F (-101°C) - do not stop AMTM from seeing the subtle infrared signals that reveal hidden activity. </p>



<p>Thanks to this technology, a little-known part of the atmosphere is now more accessible than ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cautious-steps-forward">Cautious steps forward</h2>



<p>Data from AWE and AMTM help more than just the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gigoutella-mauretanica-best-preserved-trilobite-fossils-ever-found/">scientific community</a>. If engineers know that storms can send disruptions upward, they might make satellites more resilient. If communication teams know that certain conditions can change signal paths, they can plan.</p>



<p>It is like learning a new piece of the puzzle about how Earth’s upper atmosphere and surface weather connect. Before, much of this was speculation. Now, there is something solid to rely on, even if it involves <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/awe-inspires-scientific-interest/">phenomena</a> not visible to the naked eye.</p>



<p>Events like hurricanes already cause plenty of trouble on the ground. Flooded streets, knocked-down power lines, and lost homes are tragic and serious concerns. </p>



<p>However, who would have thought that these storms could have such reach that they could touch layers of air so high up that few people ever consider them?</p>



<p>Thanks to AWE, what was once a mystery is now a bit clearer. The discovery is one more sign that we live in a world where everything is somehow interconnected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-getting-ready-for-surprises-above">Getting ready for surprises above</h2>



<p>The presence of these waves might lead to better forecasts, not just for regular weather but also for what goes on closer to space. </p>



<p>If meteorologists and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-predict-how-and-when-humans-and-mammals-will-face-extinction/">scientists</a> know that an upcoming storm might send disturbances high above, they can pass that along to operators of satellites and other machines in orbit. Over time, this could lead to better strategies to keep valuable equipment safe and secure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iss-atmospheric-waves-and-the-future">ISS, atmospheric waves, and the future</h2>



<p>What happened with Helene is just the start of learning about how weather at Earth’s surface talks to the air high above. </p>



<p>NASA says that, with these early findings in hand, the AWE can keep recording subtle signals during different types of storms.</p>



<p>Each new piece of data helps build understanding, potentially giving everyone better tools to keep communications stable and satellites safe. </p>

International Space Station observes something unknown 55 miles above Earth

<p>Crocodiles, with their intricate head scales and striking physical features, exemplify the awe-inspiring morphological diversity found across life on Earth. </p>



<p>This profound variety, particularly in reptiles, sparks curiosity about the forces that shape such traits. Why do these differences occur? Genetics, you may presume, and you wouldn't be entirely incorrect.</p>



<p>However, a recent study by an interdisciplinary team from the <a href="https://www.unige.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Geneva</a> (UNIGE) is turning heads (and scales). As it turns out, physiological characteristics like the head scales of a crocodile have much to do with the mechanics of growing tissues instead of molecular genetics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-unknown-architects-of-crocodile-scales">The unknown architects of crocodile scales</h2>



<p>Often, the connection between an organism's physicality and genetics feels like an obvious one. Michel Milinkovitch, a professor at the UNIGE Faculty of Science, pursued a more profound understanding of this link.</p>



<p>His research was focused on the evolution and development of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vertebrate-populations-are-not-in-a-global-state-of-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vertebrate</a> skin appendages such as feathers, hair, and scales.</p>



<p>In previous work, Professor Milinkovitch found that the development of crocodile head scales mirrors the propagation of cracks in a mechanically-stressed material.</p>



<p> A further exploration of this phenomenon led Milinkovitch and his team down a path of extraordinary multi-disciplinary research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-journey-into-the-unknown">A journey into the unknown</h2>



<p>The journey began with observing the embryonic development of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/nile-crocodile-crocodylus-niloticus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nile crocodile</a>. The team noted that the creature's skin remained smooth until approximately 48 days into the expected 90-day gestation period.</p>



<p>Around day 51, skin folds appeared and interconnected to form irregular polygonal scales of varying sizes in different regions of the head.</p>



<p>To determine if the constrained growth of the skin could cause these folds and the subsequent scales, the team introduced a hormone (epidermal growth factor or EGF) known for stimulating skin growth and stiffening to the crocodile eggs. The result was a surprising change in the organization of skin folds.</p>



<p>"We saw that the embryo's skin folds abnormally and forms a labyrinthine network resembling the folds of the human brain," noted study co-authors Gabriel Santos-Durán and Rory Cooper.</p>



<p>Interestingly, once the EGF-treated crocodiles hatched, this brain-like folding simplified into a pattern of much smaller scales akin to those found in another crocodilian species - the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loss-of-crocodilians-may-have-devastating-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">caiman</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skin-growth-and-crocodile-scales">Skin growth and crocodile scales </h2>



<p>To better understand how skin growth impacts scale formation, the research team utilized "light sheet microscopy" to measure the growth rate and geometries of various tissues that constitute the embryo's head. </p>



<p>Using this data, the team created a 3D computer model to simulate skin growth under constraint. They manipulated the specific growth rates and stiffnesses of the tissue layers in the model to evaluate their impacts.</p>



<p>"By exploring these different parameters, we can generate the different head scale shapes corresponding to Nile crocodiles both with or without EGF treatment, as well as the spectacled caiman or the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/american-alligator-alligator-mississippiensis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American alligator</a>," explained Ebrahim Jahanbakhsh, a computer engineer working with Milinkovitch.</p>



<p>Hence, this study offers powerful evidence that the mechanics of tissue growth can contribute to the diversity of certain anatomical structures across species, without the necessity of intricate molecular genetic factors.</p>



<p>In essence, it appears that nature, in its utmost wisdom, employs a multitude of tools to sculpt the astounding diversity of life that graces our planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-evolutionary-biology">Implications for evolutionary biology</h2>

<p>Moreover, this interdisciplinary approach - blending biology, physics, and computational modeling - could inspire new methods for studying how form and function evolve in both living and extinct species.</p>



<p>By analyzing the physical forces acting on growing tissues, researchers may gain insights into the origins of ancient species and the environmental pressures they faced.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the study highlights the intricate interplay between genetics, mechanics, and evolution, reminding us that nature employs a versatile set of tools to craft the breathtaking diversity of life on Earth.</p>

<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>

<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

Recent scientific discoveries are revolutionizing our understanding of this peculiar human behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>



<p>In 2023, Dr. Michael Brecht's team at <a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Humboldt University</a>-<a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berlin</a> made a major discovery published in the <a href="https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(22)01991-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">journal <em>Neuron</em></a>. <p>"We found that global blockade of the rat periaqueductal gray with either muscimol or lidocaine interfered with ticklishness and play," the research team reported in their study.</p>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>



<p>When someone else tickles you, your brain can't predict their movements, so the full tickling response activates. It's like your brain's way of distinguishing between self and others.</p>

<p>Individual differences in ticklishness depend on genetics, psychology, and even trust. Dr. Xinzhong Dong at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University</a> notes that people with denser nerve endings tend to be more sensitive.</p>

<p>Dr. Konstantina Kilteni's 2025 research, published in <em><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adt0350" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Advances</a></em>, reveals another technique: place your hand on the tickler's hand. This allows your brain to partially predict the sensations, reducing the tickling response by up to 90 percent.</p>



<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>

<p>From an evolutionary perspective, tickling serves vital functions according to <a href="https://www.umd.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Maryland</a> researcher Dr. Robert Provine's extensive studies. It trains our defense reflexes for vulnerable body areas and facilitates social bonding between family members.</p>



<p>Tickling-induced laughter is actually one of the first forms of communication between infants and caregivers. "Tickle involves a neurological self/nonself discrimination, providing the most primitive social scenario," Provine noted in his research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clinical-applications-emerge">Clinical applications emerge</h2>

<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
