<p>A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.</p>

<p>Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. </p>



<p>If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. </p>



<p>Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



<p>Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. </p>



<p>Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. </p>



<p>Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



<p>The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. </p>



<p>Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.</p>



<p>The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.</p>



<p>If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



<p>Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. </p>



<p>This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.</p>



<p>"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. </p>



<p>"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



<p>The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.</p>



<p>"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.</p>



<p>"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." </p>



<p>"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



<p>This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. </p>



<p>The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.</p>



<p>The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. </p>



<p>Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.</p>

<p>For almost 60 years, mathematicians have struggled to answer the age-old question: will your sofa fit around the corner of the new place you are moving to?</p>



<p>However, Jineon Baek of Yonsei University in Korea has made a breakthrough. His 100-page proof addresses the infamous "moving sofa problem," a mathematical conundrum that’s perplexed scholars since the mid-20th century.</p>



<p>Finally, there’s clarity on what kind of furniture fits through tight corners without causing chaos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birth-of-the-moving-sofa-problem">Birth of the moving sofa problem</h2>



<p>The story <a href="https://epubs.siam.org/doi/10.1137/1008074" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">begins in 1966</a> when Austrian-Canadian mathematician Leo Moser formalized the "moving sofa problem." </p>



<p>While it might seem trivial, the puzzle taps into deep mathematical principles of combinatorics and geometry. </p>



<p>It asks a deceptively simple question: What is the largest two-dimensional shape that can navigate an L-shaped corner in a corridor of unit width?</p>



<p>Imagine trying to move a perfectly rectangular piece of furniture through a narrow hallway. A square unit fits easily, but as the object’s dimensions grow, the maneuver becomes impossible. Moser’s challenge captured the frustration of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/household-plumbing-is-full-of-microbial-communities-that-might-be-a-health-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">movers</a> everywhere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-semi-circle-sofa">Semi-circle sofa</h2>



<p>British mathematician John Hammersley took an early <a href="https://archive.org/details/hammersley1968" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crack at the problem in 1968</a>. He designed a sofa that combined a semicircle with a square featuring a semicircular bite. </p>



<p>His creation was <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finger-counting-boosts-math-skills-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mathematically efficient</a> and could maneuver around an L-shaped corner with an area of 2.2074 units. </p>



<p>Hammersley also established an upper limit of 2.8284 units, suggesting no sofa larger than that could fit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-refining-the-solution">Refining the solution</h2>



<p>Nearly 25 years later, Joseph Gerver of <a href="https://www.rutgers.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rutgers University</a> refined Hammersley’s design. By rounding edges and incorporating additional arcs, Gerver proposed a new sofa shape with an area just over 2.2195 units. </p>



<p>His solution was “locally optimal,” meaning it was the best possible shape under the constraints he defined. </p>



<p>Yet, without a universal formula for all potential sofa shapes, mathematicians couldn’t rule out the possibility of an even larger design.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solving-the-moving-sofa-problem">Solving the moving sofa problem</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S000187081830416X?via%3Dihub" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">In 2018,</a> Yoav Kallus of the <a href="https://www.santafe.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Santa Fe Institute</a> and Dan Romik from the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>, added a modern twist. </p>



<p>Using computer simulations, the team theorized that a sofa shape with an area as large as 2.37 units might be feasible. Their work reignited interest in the problem and pushed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mathematical boundaries</a> further.</p>



<p>Jineon Baek’s recent work builds on this foundation. By employing an advanced mathematical technique called an injective function, Baek mapped the key properties of Gerver’s sofa design. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-acceptable-area-of-the-sofa">Acceptable area of the sofa</h2>



<p>Baek analyzed how these properties could be extended to larger dimensions, ensuring that the sofa's shape would remain viable for navigating tight spaces. </p>



<p>Through this rigorous approach, Baek conclusively demonstrated that 2.2195 units is the absolute maximum area for a sofa that can successfully pass through an L-shaped corner in a 1-unit-wide corridor. </p>



<p>While his findings are still awaiting peer review, they currently represent the most thorough and convincing resolution to this longstanding mathematical problem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-mathematical-reasoning">The power of mathematical reasoning </h2>



<p>The proof from <a href="https://www.yonsei.ac.kr/en_sc/index.jsp" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yonsei University</a> might settle the question for a single L-shaped corner, but real-world challenges often involve more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astrophysicist-says-hes-cracked-the-equation-for-time-travel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complexity</a>.</p>



<p>For instance, if a second corner in the opposite direction appears, mathematicians recommend Romik’s “ambidextrous sofa,” a shape designed for dual-corner navigation.</p>



<p>While the moving sofa problem might seem niche, it highlights the power of mathematical reasoning in solving practical problems. </p>



<p>Baek’s work not only contributes to geometry and combinatorics but also showcases how abstract mathematics can have unexpected real-world applications. </p>

<p>Previously, good cardiorespiratory fitness has been associated with a lowered risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preventing-dementia-scientists-say-three-factors-matter-most/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dementia</a> and age-related cognitive decline.</p>



<p>The researchers set out to pinpoint precisely which cognitive faculties benefited from maintaining good cardiorespiratory fitness.</p>

<p>The researchers assessed cardiorespiratory fitness among a group of 648 individuals between the ages of 65 and 80.</p>

<p>The results were fascinating. Even when considering factors like gender, education years, and weight, higher cardiorespiratory fitness correlated positively with better performance across all cognitive domains.</p>



<p>This was true regardless of the individual's age or whether they carried the high-risk APOE4 gene.</p>

<p>The researchers propose that aerobic fitness might enhance cerebral blood flow, stimulate neuron growth, develop new synaptic connections, bolster neurotransmitter systems, and modify the structure of grey and white matter - all of which could potentially preserve cognitive function.</p>

<p>"These findings highlight cardiorespiratory fitness as an essential health factor for preserving multidomain cognitive functioning in older adulthood," concluded the researchers.</p>

<p>The results clearly highlight the advantage of fitness for maintaining cognitive function, but how can these findings be incorporated into daily life?</p>



<p>Experts&nbsp;indicate&nbsp;that&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;moderate-to-vigorous&nbsp;levels of&nbsp;aerobic activities - whether brisk walking, jogging, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/active-commuting-cycling-to-work-linked-to-enormous-health-benefits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cycling</a>, or swimming - is beneficial for cardiorespiratory fitness.</p>



<p>According to the World Health Organization, adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Two strength training exercises per week can also support cardiorespiratory health.</p>



<p>In the case of older adults, the programs should focus on sustainable activities that are very enjoyable and easy to maintain.</p>



<p>Group classes,&nbsp;outdoor activities, or even setting&nbsp;reasonably&nbsp;achievable goals through fitness trackers might provide the needed motivation to be consistent.</p>



<p>This&nbsp;will&nbsp;help&nbsp;to enhance&nbsp;physical health in&nbsp;a&nbsp;more&nbsp;active&nbsp;way, while at the same time improving mental&nbsp;toughness and maintaining&nbsp;a sharper mind well into our later years.</p>

Cardiorespiratory fitness linked to greater cognitive function in later life

Imagine that the mental fog often associated with growing older...

<p>In late September, 2024, a hurricane named Helene hit the Florida coast bringing devastating rain and fierce winds. That event did not stop at the ground level, however. </p>



<p>As NASA has announced, the International Space Station detected something unexpected above Earth’s surface -- some kind of waves pushing through the atmosphere about 55 miles above the planet.</p>



<p>These were not visible to anyone looking up from their backyard, but they were there, showing that even <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experiencing-awe-in-nature-has-a-powerful-effect-on-emotional-well-being/">powerful</a> weather down here can have a connection to unseen patterns much higher up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-invisible-atmospheric-waves">Invisible atmospheric waves</h2>



<p>High overhead, there is a layer of the atmosphere called the mesosphere. It is located roughly 31 to 55 miles above ground. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-red-sprite-lightning-captured-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The mesos</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-red-sprite-lightning-captured-from-space/">phere</a> might seem pretty far removed from everyday concerns. Still, it can be disturbed by severe weather far below.</p>



<p>On the day Helene hit, NASA’s instruments captured signs of a type of atmospheric wave, not related to the space-time ones Einstein predicted, but rather ones formed by events like hurricanes.</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.usu.edu/today/story/a-dream-realized-usu-physicist-pioneers-new-era-of-atmospheric-waves-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michael Taylor</a> from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/city-under-the-ice-secret-base-camp-found-in-greenland/">NASA</a>, this unexpected observation gives a new dimension to the way in which people think about how storms affect even the thin air at tremendous heights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strange-signature-revealed-by-the-iss">Strange signature revealed by the ISS</h2>



<p>The equipment responsible for detecting this phenomenon is the Atmospheric Wave Instrument, known as AWE. </p>



<p>Installed outside the International Space Station in 2023, it was built to observe “atmospheric glow,” a faint light from gases at high altitudes.</p>



<p>When Helene struck, AWE’s sensors picked up a pattern reminiscent of “ripples,” that revealed how the hurricane stirred the air so far above. </p>



<p>This observation extended westward from the coast, showing that the disturbance traveled far beyond the main storm zone.</p>



<p>It is not a surprise that this kind of insight emerged from a view point perched high above Earth. The ISS is an ideal spot for catching details that would never show up in ordinary weather measurements closer to home.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-weather-instrument">New weather instrument</h2>



<p>AWE’s role is to reveal connections between surface storms and the upper atmosphere. Instead of looking at just the turbulent weather patterns people know -- winds, rain, and lightning -- it looks upward. It tracks how changes below might ripple upward into the mesosphere and beyond.</p>



<p>By doing this, it can help figure out what knocks the atmosphere off its usual balance. Before AWE, these subtle patterns might have gone unnoticed, leaving big questions about how the environment <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meaningful-dream-experiences-can-boost-your-work-productivity/">works</a> as a whole.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-changes-that-can-affect-satellites">Tiny changes that can affect satellites</h2>



<p>The air up there is thin, but it still matters. When these small waves appear, they can influence conditions that matter for satellites. </p>



<p>Engineers worry about anything that might shift or change the density of air at high altitudes because satellites can run into unexpected resistance.</p>



<p>The variations are slight, but in space technology, even a tiny adjustment can mean the difference between a satellite staying safely in orbit or drifting into trouble. </p>



<p>Now, with AWE’s observations, there is a tool to help understand these subtle shifts before they become a headache.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-atmospheric-waves-matter">Why atmospheric waves matter</h2>



<p>Communication satellites, weather satellites, and even the signals people rely on for navigation can depend on stable conditions high up there. </p>



<p>Some might think the harsh environment of space operates independently from Earth’s weather.</p>



<p>That is not always true. A strong hurricane, like Helene, can trigger changes that bubble all the way up. </p>



<p>By having instruments that keep an eye on these patterns, researchers can plan better. They can figure out if a future storm might rearrange the air enough to cause problems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-secrets-of-the-mesosphere">Secrets of the mesosphere</h2>



<p>Observing these waves was made possible by a set of telescopes known as the Advanced Mesospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5c-is-almost-certainly-out-of-reach/">Temperature</a> Mapper (AMTM). </p>



<p>NASA has indicated that AMTM is sensitive enough to catch details that might slip past ordinary sensors.</p>



<p>The mesosphere’s cold temperatures - around -150°F (-101°C) - do not stop AMTM from seeing the subtle infrared signals that reveal hidden activity. </p>



<p>Thanks to this technology, a little-known part of the atmosphere is now more accessible than ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cautious-steps-forward">Cautious steps forward</h2>



<p>Data from AWE and AMTM help more than just the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gigoutella-mauretanica-best-preserved-trilobite-fossils-ever-found/">scientific community</a>. If engineers know that storms can send disruptions upward, they might make satellites more resilient. If communication teams know that certain conditions can change signal paths, they can plan.</p>



<p>It is like learning a new piece of the puzzle about how Earth’s upper atmosphere and surface weather connect. Before, much of this was speculation. Now, there is something solid to rely on, even if it involves <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/awe-inspires-scientific-interest/">phenomena</a> not visible to the naked eye.</p>



<p>Events like hurricanes already cause plenty of trouble on the ground. Flooded streets, knocked-down power lines, and lost homes are tragic and serious concerns. </p>



<p>However, who would have thought that these storms could have such reach that they could touch layers of air so high up that few people ever consider them?</p>



<p>Thanks to AWE, what was once a mystery is now a bit clearer. The discovery is one more sign that we live in a world where everything is somehow interconnected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-getting-ready-for-surprises-above">Getting ready for surprises above</h2>



<p>The presence of these waves might lead to better forecasts, not just for regular weather but also for what goes on closer to space. </p>



<p>If meteorologists and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-predict-how-and-when-humans-and-mammals-will-face-extinction/">scientists</a> know that an upcoming storm might send disturbances high above, they can pass that along to operators of satellites and other machines in orbit. Over time, this could lead to better strategies to keep valuable equipment safe and secure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iss-atmospheric-waves-and-the-future">ISS, atmospheric waves, and the future</h2>



<p>What happened with Helene is just the start of learning about how weather at Earth’s surface talks to the air high above. </p>



<p>NASA says that, with these early findings in hand, the AWE can keep recording subtle signals during different types of storms.</p>



<p>Each new piece of data helps build understanding, potentially giving everyone better tools to keep communications stable and satellites safe. </p>



<p>That kind of information may seem far removed from daily life, but it has a subtle impact on the technology and networks people rely on every day.</p>

International Space Station observes something unknown 55 miles above Earth

<p>Crocodiles, with their intricate head scales and striking physical features, exemplify the awe-inspiring morphological diversity found across life on Earth. </p>



<p>This profound variety, particularly in reptiles, sparks curiosity about the forces that shape such traits. Why do these differences occur? Genetics, you may presume, and you wouldn't be entirely incorrect.</p>



<p>However, a recent study by an interdisciplinary team from the <a href="https://www.unige.ch/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Geneva</a> (UNIGE) is turning heads (and scales). As it turns out, physiological characteristics like the head scales of a crocodile have much to do with the mechanics of growing tissues instead of molecular genetics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-unknown-architects-of-crocodile-scales">The unknown architects of crocodile scales</h2>



<p>Often, the connection between an organism's physicality and genetics feels like an obvious one. Michel Milinkovitch, a professor at the UNIGE Faculty of Science, pursued a more profound understanding of this link.</p>



<p>His research was focused on the evolution and development of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vertebrate-populations-are-not-in-a-global-state-of-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vertebrate</a> skin appendages such as feathers, hair, and scales.</p>



<p>In previous work, Professor Milinkovitch found that the development of crocodile head scales mirrors the propagation of cracks in a mechanically-stressed material.</p>



<p> A further exploration of this phenomenon led Milinkovitch and his team down a path of extraordinary multi-disciplinary research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-journey-into-the-unknown">A journey into the unknown</h2>



<p>The journey began with observing the embryonic development of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/nile-crocodile-crocodylus-niloticus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nile crocodile</a>. The team noted that the creature's skin remained smooth until approximately 48 days into the expected 90-day gestation period.</p>



<p>Around day 51, skin folds appeared and interconnected to form irregular polygonal scales of varying sizes in different regions of the head.</p>



<p>To determine if the constrained growth of the skin could cause these folds and the subsequent scales, the team introduced a hormone (epidermal growth factor or EGF) known for stimulating skin growth and stiffening to the crocodile eggs. The result was a surprising change in the organization of skin folds.</p>



<p>"We saw that the embryo's skin folds abnormally and forms a labyrinthine network resembling the folds of the human brain," noted study co-authors Gabriel Santos-Durán and Rory Cooper.</p>



<p>Interestingly, once the EGF-treated crocodiles hatched, this brain-like folding simplified into a pattern of much smaller scales akin to those found in another crocodilian species - the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loss-of-crocodilians-may-have-devastating-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">caiman</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skin-growth-and-crocodile-scales">Skin growth and crocodile scales </h2>



<p>To better understand how skin growth impacts scale formation, the research team utilized "light sheet microscopy" to measure the growth rate and geometries of various tissues that constitute the embryo's head. </p>



<p>Using this data, the team created a 3D computer model to simulate skin growth under constraint. They manipulated the specific growth rates and stiffnesses of the tissue layers in the model to evaluate their impacts.</p>



<p>"By exploring these different parameters, we can generate the different head scale shapes corresponding to Nile crocodiles both with or without EGF treatment, as well as the spectacled caiman or the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/american-alligator-alligator-mississippiensis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American alligator</a>," explained Ebrahim Jahanbakhsh, a computer engineer working with Milinkovitch.</p>



<p>Hence, this study offers powerful evidence that the mechanics of tissue growth can contribute to the diversity of certain anatomical structures across species, without the necessity of intricate molecular genetic factors.</p>



<p>In essence, it appears that nature, in its utmost wisdom, employs a multitude of tools to sculpt the astounding diversity of life that graces our planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-evolutionary-biology">Implications for evolutionary biology</h2>



<p>This research not only reshapes our understanding of crocodile scale formation but also challenges traditional views in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/past-climate-change-drove-the-rapid-evolution-of-reptiles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary biology</a>.</p>



<p>By demonstrating that mechanical forces, rather than solely genetic factors, can drive the development of complex anatomical features, the study opens new doors for exploring the evolution of diverse organisms.</p>



<p>Such findings have far-reaching implications, extending to other species with unique morphological traits, such as the patterned scales of snakes, the carapaces of turtles, and even the feathers of birds. </p>



<p>The findings suggest that environmental and mechanical constraints might play a pivotal role in shaping these traits, alongside genetic blueprints.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



<p>Moreover, this interdisciplinary approach - blending biology, physics, and computational modeling - could inspire new methods for studying how form and function evolve in both living and extinct species.</p>



<p>By analyzing the physical forces acting on growing tissues, researchers may gain insights into the origins of ancient species and the environmental pressures they faced.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the study highlights the intricate interplay between genetics, mechanics, and evolution, reminding us that nature employs a versatile set of tools to craft the breathtaking diversity of life on Earth.</p>

Crocodile scales are shaped by tissue growth, not genetics

<p>Every living being we know of, from the smallest bacteria to the largest blue whale, hinges on the same remarkable genetic code - a universal blueprint that underpins the diversity of life on Earth.</p>



<p>Our understanding of how this intricate code evolved, however, has sparked intense debates and fueled ongoing scientific inquiry.</p>



<p>Is the universal genetic code an ancient feature that emerged fully formed at the very onset of life, or is it a product of gradual evolution shaped by billions of years of adaptation and change?</p>



<p>Sawsan Wehbi, a student at the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>, has provided compelling evidence that the widely accepted theory of how this genetic code evolved requires a rethink.</p>



<p>And it seems the answer lies not in how we've translated the code, but in the order in which its building blocks - the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-building-blocks-of-life-form/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amino acids</a> - were added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-established-views-of-the-genetic-code">Established views of the genetic code</h2>



<p>"The genetic code is this amazing thing in which a string of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-can-now-collect-human-dna-from-water-air-and-basically-everywhere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA</a> or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-cells-communicate-with-each-other-through-rna/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RNA</a> containing sequences of four nucleotides is translated into protein sequences using 20 different amino acids," said Joanna Masel, the study's senior author.</p>



<p>"It's a mind-bogglingly complicated process, and our code is surprisingly good. It's nearly optimal for a whole bunch of things, and it must have evolved in stages."</p>



<p>The team's findings clash with the conventional view, which suggests that early life preferred smaller, simpler amino acid molecules.</p>



<p>The study shows that complex molecules were added as well. Furthermore, the researchers found that amino acids that bind with metals joined the genetic code earlier than previously thought.</p>



<p>This offers a whole new perspective on how the genetic code came to be.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-laboratory-approaches">Rethinking laboratory approaches</h2>



<p>The accepted view of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-evolution-not-random-gene-families-pangenome-influence-called-revolutionary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a> of the genetic code largely leans on lab experiments which attempted to recreate early Earth's conditions - most notably the famous Urey-Miller experiment of 1952.</p>



<p>However, as valuable as this experiment was, it had its limitations. No sulfur-containing amino acids emerged from the experiment, despite the abundance of this element on early Earth.</p>



<p>This lack of sulfur led many to believe that sulfuric amino acids joined the genetic code at a later stage. But as critics point out, this isn't surprising given that sulfur was not included in the Urey-Miller experiment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-life-beyond-earth">Searching for life beyond Earth</h2>



<p>According to study co-author Dante Lauretta, a professor of planetary science and cosmochemistry at the U of A Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, the sulfur-rich nature of early life offers fascinating possibilities for astrobiology.</p>



<p>"On worlds like Mars, Enceladus and Europa, where sulfur compounds are prevalent, this could inform our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/searching-for-life-on-mars-quest-continues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">search for life</a> by highlighting analogous biogeochemical cycles or microbial metabolisms," said Professor Lauretta.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspectives-on-the-genetic-code">New perspectives on the genetic code</h2>



<p>The researchers from the University of Arizona adopted an innovative approach to analyze sequences of amino acids dating back to our common ancestor, LUCA, hypothesized to have lived around 4 billion years ago. </p>



<p>Unlike previous studies, they focused not on full-length protein sequences, but on protein domains - shorter stretches of amino acids.</p>



<p>"If you think about the protein being a car, a domain is like a wheel. It's a part that can be used in many different cars, and wheels have been around much longer than cars," said Wehbi.</p>



<p>By using statistical data analysis tools, they were able to trace the incorporation of individual amino acids into the genetic code. </p>



<p>Significantly, the team found that ancient sequences included amino acids with aromatic ring structures, like tryptophan and tyrosine, even though these were late additions to our code.</p>



<p>"This gives hints about other genetic codes that came before ours, and which have since disappeared in the abyss of geologic time," Masel said. "Early life seems to have liked rings."</p>



<p>This breakthrough not only reframes our understanding of early molecular evolution but also provides a foundation for exploring how genetic systems might arise on other planets.</p>



<p>The evolution of the genetic code, which previously seemed to be well understood, now once again opens up exciting new possibilities for future research and discoveries.</p>

The universal genetic code evolved in unexpected ways

<p>A new study has uncovered alarming gaps in our understanding of African hippos, highlighting major challenges in conserving these iconic animals. Despite being classified as “vulnerable to extinction” by the IUCN Red List, hippos often don’t get the attention they deserve. </p>



<p>Known as the “neglected megafauna,” they’ve received far less research and conservation focus compared to other large mammals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hippo-extinction-threat-and-lack-of-data">Hippo extinction threat and lack of data</h2>



<p>Hannah Lacy, a postgraduate researcher at the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>, has created a database that maps hippo populations across southern Africa. </p>



<p>Lacy's team analyzed nearly 200 records from nine countries, including Angola, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The findings are concerning: in many areas, population estimates for hippos are incomplete or missing altogether.</p>



<p>Even worse, inconsistent survey methods and unequal funding between countries make monitoring unreliable. In some cases, researchers recorded hippos while focusing on other species, leading to scattered and incomplete data, which contributes to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nation-will-slaughter-700-elephants-hippos-zebras-and-other-animals-due-to-drought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">risk of their extinction</a>.</p>



<p>“Without reliable information on where hippos live, and the state of their populations, it is challenging to effectively plan to protect them,” said Lacy.</p>



<p>“We need a centralized spatial database and coordinated surveys to improve the conservation of common hippos - who are important ecosystem engineers - across southern Africa.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecological-significance-of-hippos">Ecological significance of hippos</h2>



<p>Hippos are more than just large, semi-aquatic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/including-animals-carbon-cycle-models-boosts-ecosystem-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a>; they play a vital role in their ecosystems. By feeding on vegetation along waterways, they shape plant growth, preventing overgrowth that could choke waterways. </p>



<p>Their dung enriches aquatic food chains, supporting fish and invertebrates, which in turn benefits the larger food web. </p>



<p>Hippos also create deep waterholes that provide refuge for other animals during dry seasons. They are critical to maintaining biodiversity in their habitats, influencing both aquatic and terrestrial species.</p>



<p>“In many regions, they are also an important attraction for eco-tourism, which contributes to local economies and livelihoods. However, despite their ecological, social, and economic importance, common hippos face numerous threats, primarily from human activities,” noted Lacy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-threats-to-hippos">Growing threats to hippos</h2>



<p>Over the last century, hippo populations have been hit hard by habitat loss, poaching, and conflicts with humans, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megafauna-extinction-dwarf-elephants-and-hippos-cyprus-directly-linked-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pushing them towards extinction</a>.</p>



<p>Current population estimates range from 60,000 to 87,000 across southern Africa, but the lack of detailed data makes effective conservation planning difficult.</p>



<p>The study also revealed that many hippo populations depend on cross-border protected areas called Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs). These areas demonstrate the power of international cooperation in conservation. </p>



<p>Yet, isolated hippo populations - with limited opportunities to breed - face risks of genetic isolation, endangering their survival.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-hippos-from-extinction">Protecting hippos from extinction</h2>



<p>The research highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts to protect hippos from extinction.</p>



<p>Lacy calls for a central database, similar to the African Elephant Database, which has been instrumental in protecting elephants across the continent.</p>



<p>“Their feeding habits shape vegetation patterns along water courses, and their dung contributes to aquatic food webs, supporting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hippos-can-actually-become-airborne-when-they-run-at-full-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> like fish and invertebrates,” Lacy reiterated.</p>



<p>“In many regions, they are also an important attraction for eco-tourism, which contributes to local economies and livelihoods. However, despite their ecological, social, and economic importance, common hippos face numerous threats, primarily from human activities.”</p>



<p>Dr. Lochran Traill, Lacy’s PhD supervisor, noted that this work provides an update on the distribution of common hippo populations across southern Africa, and highlights the extent of population fragmentation and isolation.</p>



<p>"Hopefully, this information will be useful to conservation decision makers,” said Dr. Traill.</p>

<p>Quantum technology has been attracting a lot of attention in recent years thanks to computers that exploit atomic properties, hard drives that hold information in unusual states, and now engines that break free from the old rules. </p>



<p>These strange engines do not rely on burning anything, nor do they feed on heat. Instead, they gain their push from the unusual behavior of tiny particles.</p>



<p>Quantum mechanics sets the stage for all of this. It is not concerned with big objects, but with what happens at the smallest scales. </p>



<p>It looks at atoms, molecules, and subatomic bits of matter that do not follow everyday rules. It has sparked new gadgets that tackle problems we never knew we could solve.</p>



<p>The paper describing these results is co-authored by researchers Keerthy Menon, Dr. Eloisa Cuestas, Dr. Thomas Fogarty and Prof. Thomas Busch and has been published in the journal <em>Nature</em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-humble-origins-of-the-quantum-engine">Humble origins of the quantum engine</h2>



<p>Scientists from the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (<a href="https://www.oist.jp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OIST</a>), working with teams from the <a href="https://rptu.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Kaiserslautern-Landau</a> and the <a href="https://www.uni-stuttgart.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Stuttgart</a>, designed an engine that does not mimic the noisy machines found under a car’s hood. </p>



<p>They picked out a trick from the quantum playbook: the use of entanglement.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum entanglement</a> has been puzzling scientists for decades. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radical-new-theory-finally-unites-gravity-spacetime-and-the-quantum-realm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Albert Einstein</a> once called it “spooky action at a distance.” </p>



<p>In normal life, nothing moves faster than light. Yet, entangled particles link up so that what happens to one seems to affect the other instantly, even when they sit far apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-particles-that-bend-the-rules">Particles that bend the rules</h2>



<p>In regular machines, a piston moves when hot gases expand. In the quantum engine, movement comes from changing how particles behave. </p>



<p>Not all particles are alike. Some belong to a group called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-spooky-action-at-a-distance-persists-between-top-quarks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bosons</a>, others to a group called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quasiparticle-is-seen-for-the-first-time-and-only-has-mass-moving-in-one-direction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fermions</a>. At very low temperatures, bosons settle into states of lower energy than fermions do.</p>



<p>This difference in energy turns out to be key. Instead of fire and heat, changing bosons into fermions and back can create work. </p>



<p>In this design, particles step through changes in their quantum character, and that shifting property runs the engine. </p>



<p>“To turn fermions into bosons, you can take two fermions and combine them into a molecule. This new molecule is a boson," explained Prof. Thomas Busch, leader of the <a href="https://groups.oist.jp/qsu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum Systems Unit</a>.</p>



<p>"Breaking it up allows us to retrieve the fermions again. By doing this cyclically, we can power the engine without using heat,” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-energy-without-burning-anything">Energy without burning anything</h2>



<p>A normal engine ignites fuel. The quantum engine avoids that step. It switches particle types and uses the resulting energy difference. </p>



<p>While this type of engine only works in the quantum regime, the team found that its efficiency is quite high and can reach up to 25% with the present experimental set up built by the collaborators in Germany.</p>



<p>These results show that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-tunneling-allow-particles-break-light-speed-barrier/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum effects</a> are not just textbook oddities. They can do something useful, at least in controlled lab conditions. Still, everyone involved knows that real-world applications are not right around the corner. </p>



<p>“While these systems can be highly efficient, we have only done a proof-of-concept together with our experimental collaborators,” explained Keerthy Menon. “There are still many challenges in building a useful quantum engine.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-engine-keeps-it-cool">Quantum engine keeps it cool</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-quantum-computers-just-got-easier-with-new-technique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum devices</a> are notoriously finicky. Heat destroys the delicate conditions they need to operate. Any slight bump in temperature can throw the system off. </p>



<p>To keep it stable, scientists must chill everything. That in itself takes serious effort and energy. Avoiding heat within the engine means building an environment that is as calm and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coldest-quantum-detectors-in-the-world-enlisted-to-search-for-dark-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cold as possible</a>.</p>



<p>This research moves in a direction that might help people think differently about how to extract energy from materials. </p>



<p>Instead of relying on old-fashioned methods, it encourages rethinking the nature of what energy is and how it can be tapped at its source, without needing the spark of a flame.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>This is only the start. The researchers plan on pushing forward, asking tough questions about how the engine operates at the most basic level. They hope to see how it might hook into other devices, such as tiny batteries or precise sensors.</p>



<p>There are many pieces left to fit together, but the core idea is out in the open. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-quantum-revolution-will-impact-all-aspects-of-society/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The quantum world</a> offers behaviors that do not show up in ordinary life. </p>



<p>If scientists can keep these particles stable, control their states, and move them through clever cycles, then a whole new class of engines could arise.</p>



<p>The current research never hints at swapping out standard car engines anytime soon. The point is not to run our trucks and buses on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/schrodingers-cat-survives-in-quantum-superposition-for-a-record-shattering-23-minutes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum effects</a>. It is to understand what is possible. </p>



<p>For those curious about where quantum technology might lead, this is a hint that there might be more surprises ahead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-window-into-a-strange-world">Window into a strange world</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/impossibility-paradox-calculating-incalculable-quantum-realm-particles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum mechanics</a> once seemed too weird to ever become useful. </p>



<p>Now it's powering computers that crunch through problems with speed we could not have dreamed of, and it's setting up communication channels that might be too secure for any hacker to break. </p>



<p>Adding engines to that list, even if they stay in the lab, shifts the way we think about how technology can run.</p>



<p>It is not about making a machine better than a car engine right now. It's about seeing that there is another way. </p>



<p>Without burning fuel or relying on hot gases, particles at the smallest levels have a kind of energy all their own. </p>



<p>By turning fermions into bosons and back again, researchers have shown that change itself can power a tiny, efficient engine. This small step is just one more example of how quantum physics can show us unexpected possibilities.</p>

Quantum entanglement, not oil or coal, powers a new kind of engine

<p>A nanotechnology material called graphene has captured attention worldwide, with many scientists dubbing it the latest "wonder material" with the potential to have an enormous human impact. </p>



<p>Graphene's structure, made of carbon atoms arranged in a thin sheet, has properties that make it a strong contender to revolutionize many industries. </p>



<p>It's often regarded as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/graphene-new-wonder-material-earth-technology-found-moon-soil/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thinnest and strongest material</a> discovered so far, showing flexibility that few other materials can match. Its potential uses range from improving electronic devices to creating better ways to clean water.</p>



<p>After examining these possibilities, it makes sense to consider how exposure to this material might affect the human body. </p>



<p>Dr. Mark Miller, from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Edinburgh</a>, has been involved in efforts to understand the role graphene may play in our lives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-graphene-and-human-health">Graphene and human health</h2>



<p>Recent human studies indicate that controlled inhalation of a type of graphene known as graphene oxide does not pose short-term lung or heart risks. </p>



<p>It was tested for the first time in people through a carefully designed trial. The version used was made to be compatible with water. The idea was to ensure that the material fit medical standards as closely as possible. </p>



<p>This work involved groups from the Universities of Edinburgh and <a href="https://www.manchester.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Manchester</a>, which signals a broad commitment to understanding its safety. </p>



<p>Researchers want to know if larger or long-term doses might create different results since the structure of graphene is incredibly fine.</p>



<p>“Nanomaterials such as graphene hold such great promise, but we must ensure they are manufactured in a way that is safe before they can be used more widely in our lives,” explained Dr. Miller. </p>



<p>“Being able to explore the safety of this unique material in human volunteers is a huge step forward in our understanding of how graphene <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electrons-in-graphene-exhibit-very-strange-fractional-behavior/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">could affect the body</a>. With careful design we can safely make the most of nanotechnology.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-graphene-on-human-subjects">Testing graphene on human subjects</h2>



<p>The first-ever controlled exposure clinical study involved 14 healthy participants. They inhaled graphene oxide through a mask while riding stationary bikes inside a mobile exposure chamber. </p>



<p>Experts checked their lung function, blood pressure, blood clotting, and markers of inflammation. </p>



<p>There were no serious effects on breathing or blood pressure. There was a small indication of changes to blood clotting. </p>



<p>The team behind this effort noticed that every detail matters when it comes to making these materials suitable for everyday use.</p>



<p>“This is the first-ever controlled study involving healthy people to demonstrate that very pure forms of graphene oxide -- of a specific size distribution and surface character -- can be further developed in a way that would <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/graphene-superhighway-allows-electronic-devices-to-use-much-less-power/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">minimize the risk</a> to human health,” shared an enthusiastic Kostarelos. </p>



<p>“It has taken us more than 10 years to develop the knowledge to carry out this research, from a materials and biological science point of view, but also from the clinical capacity to carry out such controlled studies safely by assembling some of the world’s leading experts in this field," he concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-any-of-this-matter">Why does any of this matter?</h2>



<p>Graphene’s discovery in 2004 led researchers to see it as a possible choice for new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/watching-electrons-move-1-quintillionth-of-second-attoseconds-attomicroscopy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health treatments and devices</a>. </p>



<p>It could help deliver targeted therapies for certain health issues, and it may be useful in implants and sensors, too. However, each idea requires clear safety tests and <a href="https://www.fda.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FDA</a> approval before anyone uses it in clinics. </p>



<p>The recent study offers data that can guide future work. <a href="https://www.bhf.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The British Heart Foundation</a>’s Professor Bryan Williams supported these steps that might open new doors.</p>



<p>“The discovery that this type of graphene can be developed safely, with minimal short term side effects, could open the door to the development of new devices, treatment innovations and monitoring techniques,” Williams explained. </p>



<p>“We look forward to seeing larger studies over a longer timeframe to better understand how we can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lasers-may-completely-transform-the-future-of-plastic-recycling/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">safely use nanomaterials</a> like graphene to make leaps in delivering lifesaving drugs to patients.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-producing-graphene-from-microplastics">Producing graphene from microplastics</h2>



<p>Another team of scientists took an entirely different angle. They focused on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-steadily-increasing-in-freshwater-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microplastics</a>, which are tiny plastic fragments about the size of a sesame seed. </p>



<p>These small bits are making their way into oceans and lakes, causing trouble for fish, wildlife, and eventually humans. </p>



<p>A group at <a href="https://www.jcu.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Cook University</a> came up with a way to convert microplastics into graphene using a process called Atmospheric Pressure Microwave Plasma synthesis. </p>



<p>This approach might simplify recycling methods and make them more friendly to the environment.</p>



<p>“These microplastics are notorious for their non-degradable and insoluble nature in water and are an evolving threat to fish and animals and humans,” said Professor Jacob.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pushing-the-limits">Pushing the limits</h2>



<p>A small sample of plastic can be transformed at an impressive rate. About 30 mg of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-trigger-cloud-formation-and-alter-weather-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microplastics</a> yielded nearly 5 mg of graphene in just 1 minute. </p>



<p>This pace is faster than earlier techniques. Turning what was once waste into a valuable carbon material could change how society manages <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-every-semen-sample-tested/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic pollution</a>.</p>



<p>“Approximately 30 mg of microplastics produced nearly 5 mg of graphene in 1 minute. This production rate is remarkably higher than achieved previously, and offers a simpler, more environmentally friendly alternative to current techniques,” Dr. Zafar concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-graphene-humans-and-the-future">Graphene, humans, and the future</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, every piece of research on graphene hints that this material might hold keys to many improving many areas of human health and everyday life. </p>



<p>The question remains how to use it without harming health or the planet. </p>



<p>Studies on the effects of breathing in tiny amounts give important clues, and efforts to turn common plastic waste into valuable carbon sheets point to other ways it can be useful. </p>



<p>Experts want to learn more about its behavior in larger doses and over longer stretches of time. They also want to see if the new recycling methods stay efficient at a larger scale. </p>



<p>The latest research keeps pushing forward, looking for important answers that could positively impact everyone on Earth.</p>

<p>The Sun, our life-giving star, has a reputation for being temperamental. This year alone, unusually strong solar storms have dazzled the world with auroras at unexpectedly low latitudes. But how furious can our star become? </p>



<p>Evidence of the most violent solar “tantrums” - superflares - lies hidden in prehistoric tree trunks and millennia-old glacial ice.</p>



<p>However, these indirect sources leave us unable to determine the frequency of such events. Direct measurements, available only since the space age began, provide a limited perspective.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-superflares-of-sun-like-stars">Superflares of sun-like stars</h2>



<p>A recent study offers a fresh approach: studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/its-official-earth-now-has-two-moons-captured-asteroid-2024-pt5/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a> similar to our Sun to better understand its long-term behavior. </p>



<p>By observing thousands of sun-like stars with space telescopes, an international team of researchers set out to estimate how often superflares occur.</p>



<p>“We cannot observe the Sun over thousands of years,” explained Dr. Sami Solanki, director at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (<a href="https://www.mps.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MPS</a>).</p>



<p>“Instead, however, we can monitor the behavior of thousands of stars very similar to the Sun over short periods of time. This helps us to estimate how frequently superflares occur."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-the-sun-s-stellar-relatives">Finding the Sun’s stellar relatives</h2>



<p>The researchers, in collaboration with NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/kepler/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kepler mission</a>, analyzed data from 56,450 sun-like stars observed between 2009 and 2013. These observations covered an astounding 220,000 years of stellar activity.</p>



<p>“In their entirety, the Kepler data provide us with evidence of 220,000 years of stellar activity,” said Dr. Alexander Shapiro from the <a href="https://www.uni-graz.at/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Graz</a>.</p>



<p>To ensure accuracy, the researchers selected stars closely resembling the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-solar-storm-warning-issued-as-two-cmes-will-hit-earth-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sun</a> in surface temperature and brightness. They meticulously excluded errors caused by cosmic radiation, passing asteroids, or comets, and ensured that flares were reliably attributed to sun-like stars.</p>



<p>This rigorous process identified 2,889 superflares on 2,527 stars. On average, each sun-like star produced a superflare about once per century.</p>



<p>“High performance dynamo computations of these solar-type stars easily explain the magnetic origins of the intense release of energy during such superflares,” noted Dr. Allan Sacha Brun of the <a href="https://u-paris.fr/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Paris-Cité</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-frequency-of-star-superflares">Unexpected frequency of star superflares</h2>



<p>The findings were unexpected. "We were very surprised that sun-like stars are prone to such frequent superflares,” said study first author Dr. Valeriy Vasilyev from the MPS. </p>



<p>Earlier surveys had suggested much longer intervals between such events - ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 years.</p>



<p>The superior precision of this study clarified uncertainties in earlier research, which often struggled to pinpoint flare sources due to neighboring stars in telescope images.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-solar-particle-events">Extreme solar particle events</h2>



<p>Past studies of extreme solar events on Earth also hinted at less frequent occurrences of superflares. </p>



<p>By analyzing radioactive isotopes like carbon-14 in tree rings and glacial ice, researchers have identified five extreme solar particle events over the last 12,000 years.</p>



<p>The most violent occurred in 775 AD, with an estimated average interval of 1,500 years. However, this data may underestimate the true frequency of superflares.</p>



<p>“It is unclear whether gigantic flares are always accompanied by coronal mass ejections and what is the relationship between superflares and extreme solar particle events. This requires further investigation,” noted Dr. Ilya Usoskin from the <a href="https://www.oulu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oulu</a>.</p>



<p>The current study suggests that evidence from terrestrial sources might miss many solar superflares.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-space-weather">Implications for space weather</h2>



<p>While the study on sun-like stars doesn’t predict when the next superflare might occur, it highlight the need for vigilance. </p>



<p>“The new data are a stark reminder that even the most extreme solar events are part of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-anticipated-comet-of-2024-returns-this-weekend-after-80000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sun</a>’s natural repertoire,” said Dr. Natalie Krivova from the MPS.</p>



<p>The Carrington Event of 1859, one of the most powerful solar storms in history, caused widespread telegraph failures in Europe and North America. Its associated flare released only a fraction of the energy of a superflare. </p>



<p>Today, a similar event would endanger satellites and modern infrastructure, highlighting the importance of accurate forecasting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-the-sun-s-unpredictable-behavior">Preparing for the Sun's unpredictable behavior </h2>



<p>ESA’s upcoming space mission, Vigil, aims to improve solar storm forecasting. Set to launch in 2031, the probe will monitor the Sun’s activity from a vantage point in space, offering early warnings of potential solar storms.</p>



<p>The MPS is currently developing the Polarimetric and Magnetic Imager for Vigil, which will help detect processes that drive dangerous space weather. With this technology, humanity could better prepare for the Sun’s unpredictable “fits.”</p>



<p>Superflares, while rare, remain a possibility for our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturns-majestic-rings-will-vanish-in-just-six-months-from-now-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sun</a>. Understanding their frequency and impact is critical for safeguarding our technological civilization. </p>



<p>This remarkable study on sun-like stars and their superflares opens new doors to forecasting space weather and mitigating the risks posed by our temperamental star.</p>

<p>Our beloved cats face a new cause for concern: a tiny microscopic entity known as the H5N1 virus, more commonly recognized as avian influenza or bird flu.</p>



<p>Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have unearthed compelling evidence of the avian influenza adaptation in domestic cats. </p>



<p>The experts investigated a rural outbreak in South Dakota, where several outdoor cats succumbed to the virus after exhibiting severe neurological and respiratory symptoms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spread-of-the-bird-flu">Spread of the bird flu</h2>



<p>The highly pathogenic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/efforts-to-control-bird-flu-are-not-working-are-humans-next/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">avian influenza</a> virus (HPAIV) H5N1 first surfaced in China in 1996.</p>



<p>Over the years, the virus has diversified into multiple clades, with clade 2.3.4.4.b emerging as the most geographically widespread. This clade has infected over 90 bird species and 21 mammalian species worldwide, including humans in recent years.</p>



<p>Infections in domestic cats were initially documented in 2004 and linked predominantly to respiratory illness. However, clade 2.3.4.4.b has shown an alarming capacity for neurological impacts in various mammalian hosts, such as sea lions, red foxes, and now domestic cats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-south-dakota-outbreak">South Dakota outbreak</h2>



<p>In April 2024, ten outdoor cats from rural South Dakota were reported dead after displaying respiratory and neurological symptoms. </p>



<p>Researchers performed necropsies on two of the cats at the North Dakota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. </p>



<p>Tissue samples underwent a comprehensive suite of analyses, including histopathology, quantitative RT-PCR, whole-genome sequencing, phylogenetics, and lectin histochemistry. Pseudovirus binding assays further evaluated receptor compatibility.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bird-flu-in-domestic-cats">Bird flu in domestic cats</h2>



<p>H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4.b was confirmed in the brain and lungs of the infected cats. </p>



<p>Genetic analysis revealed a close relationship between the cat isolates and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cattle-may-become-a-permanent-host-for-bird-flu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H5N1</a> sequences previously identified in South Dakota dairy cattle. </p>



<p>This suggests potential spillover from infected cattle or birds. Importantly, unique mutations in the cat isolates hinted at potential virus adaptation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neurological-impact-of-the-virus-in-cats">Neurological impact of the virus in cats</h2>



<p>The study revealed severe neurological damage in infected cats, with prominent lesions in the cerebellum and hippocampus. Key findings include:</p>

<li><strong>Neuronal necrosis:</strong>&nbsp;Death of nerve cells in critical brain regions.</li>



<li><strong>Gliosis:</strong>&nbsp;Proliferation of glial cells in response to injury.</li>



<li><strong>Perivascular inflammation:</strong>&nbsp;Immune responses surrounding blood vessels in the brain.</li>



<li><strong>High viral antigen concentrations:</strong>&nbsp;Predominantly found in the cerebellum and hippocampus.</li>
</ul>



<p>The viral burden in the brain far exceeded that observed in respiratory tissues, promoting the virus's neurotropic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-bird-flu-manage-to-infect-mammal-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tendencies</a>.</p>



<p>Cats demonstrated co-expression of sialic acid receptors in their lung and brain tissues, compatible with both avian and human influenza viruses. </p>



<p>This receptor compatibility could enable cross-species transmission and highlights the risks of domestic cats acting as potential bridges for virus adaptation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-cats-in-virus-adaptation">Role of cats in virus adaptation</h2>



<p>The study, titled&nbsp;<em>"Marked Neurotropism and Potential Adaptation of H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4.b Virus in Naturally Infected Domestic Cats,"</em> raises significant public health concerns.</p>



<p>The researchers noted that cats could serve as hosts for reassortment between avian and mammalian influenza <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/avian-flu-is-now-spreading-from-mammal-to-mammal-alarming-health-officials/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a>. This scenario could facilitate the emergence of novel influenza strains capable of infecting humans.</p>



<p>“Cats could act like mutation mixing vessels,” the study warns, posing a risk for genetic reassortment and eventual cat-to-human transmission. Although no human cases linked to cats have been reported yet, this possibility demands vigilance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-outbreak">Broader implications of the outbreak</h2>



<p>The findings from the <a href="https://www.pitt.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Pittsburgh</a> study mirror earlier reports from Texas, where H5N1 outbreaks on cattle farms were linked to deaths in cats and birds.</p>

<li><strong>Stay informed:</strong>&nbsp;Keep track of local H5N1 updates and follow guidance from veterinarians or public health authorities.</li>

<p>Six years after NASA’s Dawn mission concluded its remarkable exploration of the asteroid belt’s largest bodies, Ceres and Vesta, new findings continue to reshape our understanding of these celestial objects. </p>



<p>While Vesta has faded from the spotlight, Ceres, a water-rich dwarf planet, remains the center of scientific intrigue.</p>



<p>Recent research led by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (<a href="https://www.iaa.csic.es/en">IAA-</a><a href="https://www.iaa.csic.es/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">C</a><a href="https://www.iaa.csic.es/en">SIC</a>) has identified 11 previously unknown regions on Ceres, hinting at an internal reservoir of organic materials.</p>



<p>Published in&nbsp;<em>The Planetary Science Journal</em>, the study draws on Dawn mission data and innovative analysis methods to deepen our understanding of this enigmatic dwarf planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origin-of-organic-matter-on-ceres">Origin of organic matter on Ceres</h2>



<p>In 2017, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>’s Dawn spacecraft detected organic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-matter-in-a-crater-sparks-new-questions-about-life-on-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">compounds</a> near the Ernutet crater in Ceres’ northern hemisphere, igniting debates over their origin. </p>



<p>The prevailing hypothesis suggested an exogenous origin, where organic materials were delivered by impacts from organic-rich comets or asteroids. </p>

<p>However, the new study explores an alternative scenario - that these organic materials formed within Ceres itself, and have been preserved in a subsurface reservoir that is shielded from solar radiation.</p>



<p>"The significance of this discovery lies in the fact that, if these are endogenous materials, it would confirm the existence of internal energy sources that could support biological processes," explains Juan Luis Rizos, lead author and researcher at <a href="https://www.iaa.es" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IAA-CSIC</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-ceres-the-basics">Understanding Ceres -- the basics</h2>



<p>With a diameter of over 930 kilometers, Ceres is a fascinating dwarf planet nestled in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and is the most water-rich body in the inner <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biggest-known-space-cloud-of-life-building-complex-chemicals-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar system</a> after Earth.</p>



<p>Discovered way back in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi, Ceres was the first asteroid to be identified and later reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. </p>



<p>It’s the largest object in the asteroid belt, making up about a third of its total mass. Ceres has a rocky core surrounded by a mantle of water ice, which hints that it might have a subsurface ocean. </p>



<p>This possibility has scientists buzzing because it raises questions about whether Ceres could support some form of life or at least have the right ingredients for it.</p>

<p>As a dwarf planet, it bridges the gap between smaller asteroids and fully-fledged planets, showcasing characteristics of both. </p>



<p>Its abundance of water ice and potential liquid water beneath the surface place it among the solar system’s ocean worlds and make it a tantalizing target for astrobiological research.</p>



<p>Additionally, Ceres’ composition links it to carbonaceous chondrites, a type of meteorite that is rich in carbon compounds. </p>



<p>Such meteorites are considered relics of the material that formed the solar system 4.6 billion years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ceres-surface-and-organic-materials">Ceres’ surface and organic materials</h2>



<p>The study employed a unique approach to analyze Ceres’ surface and organic material distribution. Using Spectral Mixture Analysis (SMA), the researchers characterized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/land-degradation-severely-threatens-planetary-boundaries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">compounds</a> near the Ernutet crater.</p>



<p>They then used high-resolution spatial images from Dawn’s Framing Camera 2 (FC2) to systematically scan the entire surface. </p>



<p>This dual approach enabled the identification of 11 new regions potentially rich in organic compounds.</p>



<p>Many of these areas are near the equatorial region, where prolonged solar radiation exposure has degraded organic materials. </p>

<p>Despite this degradation, high-resolution spectral analysis using Dawn’s VIR imaging spectrometer confirmed the presence of organic compounds, particularly in a region between the Urvara and Yalode basins. </p>



<p>Here, the organic materials appear within geological features formed by impacts, suggesting they originated from deeper subsurface layers.</p>



<p>"These impacts were the most violent Ceres has experienced, so the material must originate from deeper regions than the material ejected from other basins or craters," clarifies Rizos. </p>



<p>"If the presence of organics is confirmed, their origin leaves little doubt that these compounds are endogenous materials."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-should-we-care-about-this">Why should we care about this?</h2>



<p>These findings align with a related study by Italian collaborators, who demonstrated that organic compounds degrade more rapidly under solar radiation than previously estimated. </p>



<p>The observed quantities and degradation levels suggest that vast reservoirs of organic material likely exist beneath the surface of Ceres.</p>



<p>"The idea of an organic reservoir in such a remote and seemingly inert location like Ceres raises the possibility that similar conditions could exist on other solar system bodies," Rizos concludes. </p>



<p>"Without a doubt, Ceres will be revisited by new probes in the near future, and our research will be key in defining the observational strategy for these missions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-for-ceres">What's next for Ceres?</h2>



<p>As researchers continue to unravel the mysteries of Ceres, its significance in planetary science and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/land-degradation-severely-threatens-planetary-boundaries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space exploration</a> grows. </p>



<p>The potential presence of internal organic reservoirs not only sheds light on the dwarf planet’s geologic and chemical evolution but also enhances its appeal as a target for future missions. </p>



<p>With its unique characteristics and abundant resources, Ceres stands as a key destination in humanity’s journey to understand the solar system’s past and secure its future in space exploration.</p>



<p>"Ceres will play a key role in future space exploration. Its water, present as ice and possibly as liquid beneath the surface, makes it an intriguing location for resource exploration," predicts Rizos.</p>



<p>"In the context of space colonization, Ceres could serve as a stopover or resource base for future missions to Mars or beyond."</p>



<p>All these features make Ceres a key player in our understanding of the early solar system and the potential for habitable environments beyond Earth.</p>

<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
