<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Ever wondered about the fish you see leaping across rivers with a furious determination? These diligent creatures, including salmon and similar species, have one thing in common. They all face a significant life decision early on - whether to stay in the river or migrate to the sea and then return to procreate.</p>



<p>This choice is about survival and it's a tough one, as both paths come with their unique set of challenges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmon-migrating-to-the-open-sea">Salmon migrating to the open sea</h2>



<p>Salmon-like fish, known as salmonids, often choose to either stick around in their birthplace or adapt to the seawater of the open sea, returning to the river to lay their eggs later. </p>



<p>This branching of strategies impacts how these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-fish-swarms-attract-predators-making-them-an-easy-target/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish communities</a> evolve over time, especially when we factor in their interplay with environmental conditions. </p>



<p>This complex interaction could potentially shape individual traits, leading to a shift in the proportion of fish adopting the different pathways.</p>



<p>Such strategic divergences are not exceptional in the animal kingdom. However, how this sort of divergence affects population evolution is not entirely understood. So, researchers are diving into this topic to unravel the mysteries beneath these aquatic decisions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-residents-or-migrants">Residents or migrants?</h2>



<p>To investigate, a team of researchers led by Jun-nosuke Horita from the Japan Weather Association, and Yuuya Tachiki, an assistant professor at <a href="https://www.tmu.ac.jp/english/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tokyo Metropolitan University</a>, developed a mathematical model.</p>



<p>The model incorporates known traits of a specific salmonid, the female masu salmon, and explores how populations evolve over time given the availability of alternative strategies.</p>



<p>Female masu salmon have three strategies to choose from. They can remain in the river where they were born (residents), migrate to the sea after a year (early migrants), or venture out into the sea at a later stage of their lives (late migrants). </p>



<p>For simplicity, the research team modeled the salmon to be either resident or early migrants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmon-size-in-open-sea">Salmon size in open sea</h2>



<p>An intriguing aspect of the model was the inclusion of size distributions. Young salmon that are smaller are more prone to choose migrating over staying put. </p>



<p>This study built upon known features of salmon demographics, including the number of eggs per individual and their survival rate. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-the-migratory-paths">Predicting the migratory paths</h2>



<p>The results of the study were significant. The research team observed that under a broad range of parameters, a stable population was maintained. </p>



<p>Interestingly, they also identified set conditions under which alternative strategies could be triggered. It was found that a river environment unfavorable for survival, coupled with a fertile sea environment, increased the likelihood of salmon migrating. </p>



<p>When the survival rate of the arduous migration process plunges below a certain threshold, there is a sudden switch which leads to entire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-find-new-ways-to-reproduce-in-response-to-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">populations</a> opting to stay home and become residents.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survival-evolution-and-environmental-changes">Survival, evolution, and environmental changes </h2>



<p>The ability to predict how populations choose different migratory strategies is crucial for understanding eco-evolution.</p>



<p>This knowledge can help us comprehend how changes in our environment can impact the survival of these organisms. The team is hopeful that their work could be applied to assess and forecast how human-induced changes can affect animal populations.</p>



<p>So, the next time you spot a salmon leaping across the river, remember, it's not just a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-illuminates-fish-interactions-in-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> going against the flow; it's an individual caught in the intricate web of survival, evolution, and environmental changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-salmon-evolving-in-seas">Salmon evolving in seas</h2>



<p>The research has provided some valuable insights into the world of salmonids and their struggle between migrating and staying put. But it also raises questions about the impact of environmental changes on these aquatic beings.</p>



<p>"This model provides several insights into the eco-evolutionary response of the population to environmental change. For example, the increase in survivorship during migration increased the population size and the fraction of migrants as an ecological and evolutionary response, respectively," noted the researchers.</p>



<p>As we continue our journey of exploration and understanding, let's remember that the decisions we make and the actions we take today have a ripple effect on these fragile ecosystems. </p>

<p>A growing body of research suggests that, like humans, animals also adjust their social behaviors as they age.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A special issue of <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/toc/rstb/2024/379/1916" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B</em></a> recently published 16 studies exploring this topic, with six led by the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>. </p>



<p>The studies reveal how social patterns shift as animals grow older, providing insights into the potential biological and social benefits of these changes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-social-engagement-in-aging-red-deer">Less social engagement in aging red deer</h2>



<p>One of the studies focused on red deer on Scotland’s Isle of Rum, particularly on the behavior of older female <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deer-migration-is-driven-by-springtime-vegetation-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deer</a>, or does. As the deer age, they interact less with their peers. This reduction in socialization may help them avoid competition and reduce their risk of parasite infection. </p>



<p>Josh Firth from the University of Leeds, one of the editors of this special issue, highlighted that such behavior may be widespread across species, as it allows individuals to avoid health risks associated with social interactions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“These kinds of effects might be expected across societies, where individuals might avoid social interactions as they become more vulnerable to the costs of infection,” Firth explained.</p>



<p>The shift in behavior among aging deer has parallels in human behavior, especially seen during the COVID-19 pandemic when many older adults limited their social activities to avoid exposure to illness.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Wild animals provide a good model system for considering the costs and benefits of changing social behavior with age,” Firth added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-house-sparrows-lose-social-connections-over-time">House sparrows lose social connections over time</h2>



<p>Another notable study investigated how aging impacts social behavior in house <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sparrows-have-fewer-friends-as-they-age-just-like-most-people/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sparrows</a>. Research led by Julia Schroeder at <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College London</a>, with additional input from Jamie Dunning, found that older sparrows tend to shrink their social circles. </p>



<p>“Our study is one of the first to suggest that birds, like mammals, also reduce the size of their social network as they age,” Dunning said. This decline could be influenced by the deaths of peers and the challenges older birds face in forming new bonds.</p>



<p>The research on Lundy Island offered a unique setting, as the isolated population of sparrows has no birds entering or leaving, allowing scientists to monitor each bird’s social connections throughout its life.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Schroeder, understanding the dynamics of these aging friendships may shed light on how social patterns evolve among birds and even offer insights into similar behaviors in other species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broad-applications-across-species">Broad applications across species</h2>



<p>These studies go beyond mammals and birds, extending to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-insect-decline-what-are-the-causes-and-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a>, which may not immediately come to mind when considering social dynamics. Professor Amanda Bretman’s work with <em>Drosophila</em> fruit flies showed that social environments impact aging even in simpler animals. </p>



<p>“In humans, a poor social environment can have the same level of impact as smoking or obesity on healthy aging,” Bretman noted. Her team’s research found that social interactions can significantly affect lifespan and aging, even in insects.</p>



<p>Studying the impact of social behavior in fruit flies offers a controlled environment where researchers can observe the mechanics of social aging.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These insights could potentially apply to broader research on aging in humans, helping scientists better understand the underlying processes that link social behaviors and health outcomes across different life stages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-mechanisms-of-social-aging">Understanding the mechanisms of social aging</h2>



<p>In their studies of fruit flies, Bretman’s team could precisely manipulate the flies’ social surroundings, gaining a deeper look into why animals, and perhaps humans, might adjust social behaviors with age.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research underscores that the social environment can vary by gender, timing, and social structure. By looking at how even insects adapt their behavior based on social context, scientists hope to reveal fundamental patterns that apply across species, possibly suggesting strategies for promoting healthy social <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/assamese-macaques-show-how-aging-affects-our-social-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-social-aging-in-humans">Implications for social aging in humans</h2>



<p>These findings offer potential insights for human social dynamics as well. Firth noted that animal models are valuable for understanding the roots of social aging in human societies, where shifts in social habits can affect physical and mental health outcomes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Animal systems are now widely considered as well placed for developing our fundamental understanding of aging societies,” he explained. Observing animal behavior may provide clues on supporting social connections and minimizing isolation in human populations as they age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions-in-social-aging-research">Future directions in social aging research</h2>



<p>Looking forward, researchers intend to explore the intricacies of social aging further. Schroeder’s team plans to continue studying the life-long social patterns of house sparrows, examining how friendships form and evolve.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers believe that such detailed studies could illuminate the complexity of aging not only in animals but also offer parallels to human aging, as people similarly adapt their social interactions to match their life stage and health needs.</p>



<p>In addition, Bretman’s team is keen to examine how social environments impact health across different life stages in simpler animals. Since insects are easier to study in controlled environments, they can serve as useful models to understand the biological mechanisms that drive social aging, possibly uncovering processes that can apply to more complex animals, including humans.</p>



<p>The breadth of these studies highlights that changing social behaviors with age is a general phenomenon across species. From deer reducing their social interactions to avoid health risks to sparrows experiencing a natural decline in friendships as peers pass on, the social effects of aging are universal.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The insights provided by this special issue reveal that the social consequences of aging are not unique to humans. Instead, they reflect a broader biological principle that has significant implications for understanding both animal and human health across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifespan-is-influenced-more-by-lifestyle-than-genetics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lifespan</a>.</p>

<p>The notion that Mars once teemed with life billions of years ago continues to intrigue scientists. Today, the red planet's cold, dry landscape, stripped of its once-strong magnetic field, poses questions reminiscent of a cosmic forensic investigation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Researchers are particularly interested in understanding whether Mars was habitable, and if so, during what period.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-magnetic-field">Mars' magnetic field</h2>



<p>A research team at Harvard's <a href="https://paleomag.fas.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paleomagnetics Lab</a>, within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been at the forefront of exploring this timeline.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A recent paper in <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41467-024-51092-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Communications</em></a> presents their strongest evidence yet that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-captured-in-true-color-like-youve-never-seen-the-red-planet-before/">Mars</a>' life-protecting magnetic field, or “dynamo,” could have lasted until about 3.9 billion years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This contrasts with older estimates that placed its demise around 4.1 billion years ago, suggesting the dynamo persisted for hundreds of millions of years longer than previously thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modeling-the-martian-dynamo">Modeling the Martian dynamo</h2>



<p>Leading the study is <a href="https://gsas.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences</a> student Sarah Steele, who, with the help of computer modeling and simulation, has worked to pinpoint the age of Mars' dynamo.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Martian dynamo, driven by convection within the planet's iron core much like Earth's, could shield the surface from harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amaterasu-extremely-high-energy-cosmic-ray-detected-with-no-clear-source/">cosmic rays</a>, crucial for maintaining a habitable environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Steele, along with senior author Roger Fu, a professor of natural sciences, is challenging prevailing theories that Mars' magnetic field weakened early. Their research incorporates simulations of the cooling and magnetization processes in Mars' surface craters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Previously studied impact basins on the planet are known for their weak magnetic fields, leading to the assumption they were formed after the planet's dynamo had already ceased.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magnetic-fields-preserved-in-rock-nbsp">Magnetic fields preserved in rock&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Paleomagnetics, which involves studying ancient magnetic fields preserved in rock, provided the foundation for these assumptions. According to the experts, ferromagnetic minerals within rock align with magnetic fields when heated, and once the rock cools, this alignment is "frozen" in place. </p>



<p>Such fossilized magnetic signatures can be examined billions of years later, revealing the state of the magnetic environment during the rock's formation.</p>



<p>The weak magnetic signals observed in some Martian craters led researchers to theorize that these features formed in the absence of an active dynamo.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, Steele's team proposes an alternative explanation: these basins may have formed during a polarity reversal, where the north and south magnetic poles switch places.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These reversals occur periodically on Earth, and simulations indicate that they could account for the weak magnetic fields detected in Martian craters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-habitable-mars-a-shift-in-perspective-nbsp">Habitable Mars: A shift in perspective&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to Steele, this finding challenges long-held beliefs about when Mars' dynamo ceased.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We are basically showing that there may not have ever been a good reason to assume Mars's dynamo shut down early,” she said. This new interpretation builds on the team's earlier work that first questioned the established Martian habitability timeline.</p>



<p>Their previous research involved examining a well-known Martian meteorite, Allan Hills 84001, using an advanced quantum diamond microscope in Fu's lab.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analysis revealed varying magnetic properties within the rock that hinted at a magnetic field lasting until approximately 3.9 billion years ago.</p>

<p>Steele acknowledged that challenging a widely accepted theory can be daunting. However, she noted that the planetary research community has been supportive of fresh perspectives.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We are trying to answer primary, important questions about how everything got to be like it is, even why the entire solar system is the way that it is,” Steele explained. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weak-magnetic-field-may-have-set-the-stage-for-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Magnetic fields</a> play a key role in these explorations, as they offer insights into the deep interiors and the early history of planets.</p>



<p>The potential implications extend beyond Mars. Understanding the longevity and nature of magnetic fields on other planets helps scientists draw parallels and contrasts with Earth’s history.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These insights also inform the search for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitable-worlds-new-strategy-to-identify-planets-that-may-host-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitability</a> on planets beyond our solar system, suggesting that the presence and persistence of a magnetic field could be vital indicators of a world’s potential to host life.</p>

<p>You've heard of childhood obesity and probably know about the rising rates, health implications, and the urgent need to address this worsening problem. New research suggests that something as simple as a text message could make a huge difference in the battle against childhood obesity.</p>



<p>This idea was proposed by Dr. Eliana Perrin, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Primary Care at the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health.</p>



<p>Dr. Perrin co-led a study that shows adding text messaging and digital feedback alongside traditional health counseling can help to prevent obesity in very young children. This, in turn, prevents life-long obesity-related problems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-childhood-obesity-rates">Childhood obesity rates</h2>



<p>About 1 in 5 school-aged children were affected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childhood-obesity-rates-are-surging-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">obesity</a> in 2017–18, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p>



<p>This is a rate that's only increased during and since the pandemic. Solutions to reduce this rate heavily leaned on in-person interventions by pediatric providers. However, these interventions had limited success.</p>



<p>Enter the Greenlight Program, developed by Dr. Perrin and her colleagues. The goal of this intervention is to educate parents about healthy growth in their newborns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-text-messages-to-tackle-obesity">Text messages to tackle obesity</h2>



<p>“We found that parents are eager for more information to help their children grow up healthy, and the vast majority of parents own smartphones,” said Dr. Perrin, who is also a general pediatrician at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/johns-hopkins-childrens-center/what-we-treat/specialties/general-pediatrics/harriet-lane-clinic" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harriet Lane Clinic</a>&nbsp;at the Children’s Center.</p>



<p>The researchers recruited nearly 900 parent-infant pairs from newborn nurseries or pediatric primary care clinics across six medical institutions. All babies were 21 days old or younger, born after 34 weeks gestation, at a healthy weight, and with no chronic medical conditions that might <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childhood-obesity-rates-spiked-during-the-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">affect weight gain</a>.</p>



<p>The infant-parent pairs were randomly sorted into two groups. Both groups received Greenlight Program education, with counseling on healthy nutrition and behaviors from their primary care providers. Additionally, they received educational booklets matching the child’s age, with guidance and goal-setting tips.</p>



<p>However, half of the infant-parent pairs received personalized, interactive text messages from a fully automated system. This system provided immediate feedback, tips for addressing challenges, and encouragement based on progress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-the-text-messages">Impact of the text messages </h2>



<p>The study meticulously tracked the outcomes of sending text messages on childhood obesity up to the child's second birthday. Researchers collected data on various health metrics, including childhood weight and growth patterns, to assess the program's effectiveness. </p>



<p>Through innovative data collection methods, such as regular follow-ups and digital monitoring, they were able to capture a comprehensive picture of each child's development. </p>



<p>The findings revealed a noticeable improvement in maintaining healthy growth trajectories among children who received the personalized text messages.</p>



<p>These results emphasize the powerful potential of integrating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neighborhood-food-access-linked-to-childhood-obesity-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">digital communication</a> within traditional healthcare frameworks to combat childhood obesity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-research">Broader implications of the research </h2>



<p>The success of this study on text-based obesity interventions opens avenues for future research and application in diverse settings, suggesting that similar approaches can be adapted for older children or other health conditions.</p>



<p>As the prevalence of smartphones continues to rise, leveraging digital technology offers an accessible and scalable solution for real-time health education and intervention. </p>



<p>This approach not only personalizes healthcare but also empowers parents with the tools they need to provide healthier environments for their children.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-digital-victory-of-texts-on-obesity">Digital victory of texts on obesity</h2>



<p>There was a difference between the two groups. Children of parents who received the digital intervention had healthier weight-for-length growth curves over the first two years of life compared to those who had counseling only. The digital intervention also resulted in a 45% relative reduction in obesity.</p>



<p>The researchers concluded that the digital intervention led to healthier weight-for-length paths and decreased obesity incidences. They believe that these digital services were effective, especially in populations at the highest risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dads-diets-have-a-direct-impact-on-childhood-obesity-rates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">obesity</a>.</p>



<p>The “intervention effect” occurred as early as 4 months and continued throughout the two years. This study may be one of the first ever to prevent early childhood obesity, particularly in such a large and diverse group of participants.</p>



<p>“If we can prevent obesity in these children at greatest risk, we can also create better health equity in the future,” said Dr. Perrin. The researchers plan to follow the impacts of their project as the children grow up.</p>



<p>The research was supported by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. Study data were collected and managed using REDCap electronic data capture tools hosted at <a href="https://www.vanderbilt.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vanderbilt University</a> Medical Center and supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences/National Institutes of Health.</p>

<p>Have you ever thought about the impact neutering might have on your dog's health? If you're a dog owner, chances are this topic has crossed your mind more than once. </p>



<p>While common belief supports neutering as a way to control the pet population and eliminate certain health risks, there is a side of this story that often remains untold.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neutering-and-dog-health">Neutering and dog health</h2>



<p>The intriguing relationship between neutering and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-neutering-linked-to-serious-health-risks-in-some-dog-breeds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dog health</a> is not new, and several studies have pointed towards a link between the timing of neutering and the onset of certain diseases in female dogs. </p>



<p>However, the lack of uniform methodologies and diverse study populations have made it difficult to reach a consensus.</p>



<p>The intriguing question remains - does the timing of neutering, especially in relation to puberty, influence the health outcomes of our beloved dogs?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-neutering-on-female-dogs">Impact of neutering on female dogs</h2>



<p>Dr. Rachel Moxon and her team at the <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Nottingham</a> set out to investigate by sifting through existing literature.</p>



<p>The goal was to explore the impact of neutering timing (particularly around puberty) on five key <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-now-hear-signs-of-heart-disease-in-dogs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health outcomes</a> - atopy, developmental orthopedic disease (DOD), neoplasia, obesity, and urogenital disease.</p>



<p>The study was focused on female dogs and how neutering affects their health. An astounding number of publications were identified, reviewed, and assessed to build a rich and comprehensive picture of the subject matter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significant-lack-of-evidence">Significant lack of evidence </h2>



<p>Contrary to the team's hope for a rich evidence base, the review shed light on a stark reality. There is a significant lack of evidence regarding the impacts of neutering female dogs before or after puberty on the five stated aspects of dog health.</p>



<p>Only a handful of studies considered the dog's pubertal status at neutering, while others merely took the dog's age into account.</p>



<p>Why is this a big deal? This missing link makes it difficult for veterinarians and pet owners to make informed decisions about the optimal timing of neutering. After all, who wants to make a choice that could potentially impact their pet’s health negatively?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-study-results">Conflicting study results</h2>



<p>"Conflicting information in the veterinary literature regarding the beneficial and detrimental impacts of neutering at different times makes decisions regarding the best time to neuter female dogs difficult for pet dog owners, and providing advice to owners difficult for veterinarians," said Rachel Moxon, lead researcher on the project.</p>



<p>"Similar to the findings of another review by this research group that looked at the effects on behavior, this review has identified a lack of evidence related to the impacts of neutering female dogs before or after puberty on five aspects of female dog health."</p>



<p>According to Moxon, studies generally propose that neutering female dogs earlier appears to be protective for some cancers, but increases the risk of developmental orthopedic disease and potentially urinary incontinence.</p>



<p>These contrasting results make it difficult to determine the optimal timing of neutering to benefit female dog health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-neutering-remains-unclear">Impact of neutering remains unclear</h2>



<p>"This scoping review suggests that robust evidence to support veterinarians, those working with dogs and dog owners when discussing the timing of neutering relative to puberty does not yet exist," concluded the researchers.</p>



<p>"The review highlighted the lack of literature along with weaknesses in the existing studies caused by age rather than puberty being examined. Whether or not neutering before or after puberty has an impact on the health of female domesticated dogs is currently unknown."</p>



<p>So, where does this leave us? As pet owners or veterinarians, how are we supposed to navigate this conundrum?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-call-for-more-research-on-dog-neutering">Call for more research on dog neutering</h2>



<p>By the end of this journey, if there's one key insight we can draw, it's the necessity for further research. More comprehensive, standardized studies considering the pubertal status at neutering are crucial to give us a clearer picture.</p>



<p>Think about it: wouldn't it be great if we could make informed decisions about neutering to ensure the best health outcomes for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-are-evolving-to-fit-the-modern-lives-of-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our furry companions</a>?</p>



<p>In a world where our decisions can directly impact the lives of our beloved pets, ignorance cannot be bliss. </p>

How does neutering affect a dog's health? Many questions remain

Have you ever thought about the impact neutering might have...

<p>A wilting flower is not always a sign of poor health or inadequate care. It could actually be a strategic play, millions of years in the making, created by Mother Nature herself.</p>



<p>Researchers from Macquarie University, along with international collaborators, have discovered a simple strategy that has been overlooked: plants recycle resources from wilting flowers for future reproduction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recycling-resources-from-wilting-flowers">Recycling resources from wilting flowers </h2>



<p>"Our research delivers the first direct demonstration that plants can salvage resources from wilting flowers and reuse these resources to promote future reproduction," said lead author Honorary Professor Graham Pyke from <a href="https://www.mq.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Macquarie University</a>.</p>



<p>Why bother with this recycling effort? Well, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flowers-blooming-92-days-earlier-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flowers</a> aren't just pretty faces. They are rich in energy and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. When they wilt, it isn't necessarily the end but rather the beginning of another chapter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wilting-flowers-of-christmas-bells">Wilting flowers of Christmas bells </h2>



<p>The focus of the three-year study was a native of Eastern Australia, the stunning Blandfordia grandiflora. Known commonly as Christmas bells, it casts a striking image with its vibrant red and yellow flowers, especially around December.</p>



<p>"Our research takes place on a plantation containing several hectares of native wet heath where Christmas bells flower quite profusely, along with a commercial shadehouse," noted Professor Pyke.</p>



<p>To assess the abilities of the plant, the team used an array of techniques. They modulated pollination and flower wilting and then gauged the effect on seed production and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bees-prefer-flowers-with-large-bullseyes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reflowering</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storing-up-chemical-energy">Storing up chemical energy </h2>



<p>The researchers soon realized things weren’t exactly as they had predicted. They found that plants did not use resources from wilted flowers to bolster short-term reproduction.</p>



<p>"These plants salvage resources invested in reproduction during one flowering season and reuse these resources during the next flowering season," explained Professor Pyke.</p>



<p>Blandfordia grandiflora was found to transfer resources from its wilting flowers to its underground corms and roots, effectively storing this "chemical energy" to produce new flowering stems in the subsequent season, often a year later.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-resource-management-in-wilting-flowers">Resource management in wilting flowers</h2>



<p>Professor Pyke noted that plants work on principles similar to economics. "Plants must make decisions about where to allocate their limited resources; investing in one area means they can't invest as much in another."</p>



<p>This concept of resource allocation prompted Professor Pyke to investigate flower wilting, which he anticipated to be a plant's mechanism of diverting resources to other processes.</p>



<p>The results, however, were not quite what he expected. The plants were storing their reclaimed resources for the next flowering season - not using them right away.</p>



<p>According to Professor Pyke, plants have different ways of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flowers-are-picky-when-choosing-their-mate-for-fertilization/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">managing their flowers</a> post reproduction, with wilting being just one of many strategies. Some plants, such as the jacaranda and the frangipani, even shed their flowers before they wilt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seed-production-and-wilting-in-flowers">Seed production and wilting in flowers</h2>



<p>The study findings were confirmed through various experiments. One such experiment compared seed production between plants with flowers that were allowed to wilt and those with petals removed to prevent wilting.</p>



<p>Another experiment stopped seed production in all flowers but allowed wilting in one group of plants. Results showed that plants with wilting flowers were more likely to reflower the next season than those where wilting was prevented.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-that-influence-seed-production">Factors that influence seed production </h2>



<p>The study also took into consideration other factors that might influence seed production, such as stem height, the number of flowers per stem, and flower position.</p>



<p>"Taller flowering stems, for example, produced more seeds and heavier seeds, as did stems with more flowers. But flowers positioned lower down on the plant tended to have fewer seeds, and seeds that weighed less," said Professor Pyke.</p>



<p>"Our findings pave the way for further research into other plant species, and how they recover and reuse the resources from wilting flowers."</p>



<p>An exciting road lies ahead, with a lot to discover. Future research will explore what these salvaged resources are composed of, how plants move and change them, and whether saving these resources outweighs the costs of making <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-farming-and-flower-strips-improve-honey-bee-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flowers</a> in the first place.</p>

Plants with wilting flowers aren't dying - they are saving energy

A wilting flower is not always a sign of poor...

<p>A recent study points to an exciting possibility: that Uranus's moon Miranda, located in the far reaches of our solar system, may harbor a hidden sea beneath its icy crust, making it hospitable to extraterrestrial life.</p>



<p>Discovering water on a moon is no easy task. It's even harder when that moon is hundreds of millions of miles away.</p>



<p>Tom Nordheim, a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jhuapl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JHAPL</a>), is the person who gave us a peek into these icy depths. </p>



<p>"To find evidence of an ocean inside a small object like Miranda is incredibly surprising," said Nordheim, who co-authored the study. </p>



<p>His team's work challenges our understanding of Miranda while positing new questions about the potential for life on other celestial bodies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-miranda-s-bizarre-moonscape">Miranda's bizarre moonscape</h2>



<p>Recall 1986 when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-lost-contact-with-voyager-2-spacecraft-12-billion-miles-away/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Voyager 2</a>, NASA's intrepid spacecraft, beamed back the first close-up images of Miranda. It was a sight to behold.</p>



<p>A bizarre landscape that looked as if it had been stitched together from bits and pieces of different worlds. </p>



<p>From deep grooves and towering cliffs to mysterious trapezoid-shaped regions known as coronae, Miranda appeared to be a geological wonder. But what could have caused such a varied landscape?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-deal-with-uranus">What's the deal with Uranus?</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uranus-is-more-gassy-less-icy-than-we-ever-imagined/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uranus</a> is one of the lesser-known planets in our solar system. Unlike the other planets, Uranus rotates on its side, so its axis is almost parallel to its orbit. </p>



<p>This tilt causes some extreme seasons -- imagine a planet where each pole gets 42 years of continuous sunlight followed by 42 years of darkness. </p>



<p>Scientists think a massive collision with an Earth-sized object might have knocked it over early in its history.</p>



<p>Another interesting aspect is Uranus's atmosphere, which is rich in icy materials like water, ammonia, and methane. That methane is what gives the planet its <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/the-ice-giant-uranus-in-stunning-detail/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signature blue-green color</a>. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-photos-of-uranus-from-hubble-and-new-horizons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Uranus</a> also has a set of faint rings and at least 27 moons, many named after Shakespearean characters like Miranda, which is the subject of this article, and Ariel. </p>



<p>Despite being discovered way back in 1781 by William Herschel, Uranus still holds many secrets, and researchers are eager to explore it further to understand more about these distant, icy worlds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-ocean-on-a-moon-named-miranda">Hidden ocean on a moon named Miranda</h2>



<p>Caleb Strom, a graduate student at the <a href="https://und.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Dakota</a>, and Alex Patthoff from the <a href="https://www.psi.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planetary Science Institute</a> in Arizona joined Nordheim for this fascinating study.</p>



<p>They approached this mystery like detectives working a cold case, revisiting old Voyager 2 images and using modern computer modeling techniques to reconstruct Miranda's geologic past.</p>

<p>As Strom and his team mapped out Miranda's convoluted surface features and modeled different scenarios for its interior structure, a startling picture began to emerge. </p>



<p>Their findings suggest that around 100 to 500 million years ago, Miranda likely harbored a subsurface ocean, at least 62 miles deep, beneath a frozen crust no more than 19 miles thick.</p>



<p>"That result was a big surprise to the team," said Strom. The thought that a moon as small as Miranda could contain such a large ocean is not something scientists expected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tidal-forces-on-the-moon-miranda">Tidal forces on the moon Miranda</h2>



<p>Even more confusing is the fact that this ocean could have been warm enough to remain liquid, despite Miranda's incredible distance from the Sun. </p>



<p>The credit goes to a dance of gravitational forces played out between Miranda and her neighboring moons orbiting Uranus.</p>



<p>This phenomenon, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-interactions-with-mars-influence-deep-ocean-circulation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">orbital resonance</a>, can generate friction and heat within a moon's interior, enough to sustain a subsurface ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-could-miranda-still-have-a-liquid-ocean">Could Miranda still have a liquid ocean?</h2>



<p>The case isn't closed yet. The team believes that Miranda's interior hasn't entirely frozen over. If it had, we would see specific surface features that just aren't there. </p>



<p>So, there's a good chance that Miranda still has a subsurface ocean, though likely thinner than before. </p>



<p>"But the suggestion of an ocean inside one of the most distant moons in the solar system is remarkable," remarked Strom.</p>



<p>This isn't the first time a small moon has surprised us. Back in 2004, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-sparking-energy-source-found-on-saturns-moon-enceladus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enceladus</a>, one of Saturn's moons, revealed active geysers spewing water vapor and ice into space, hinting at a hidden ocean. Today, Enceladus is a prime target in the search for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shock-discovery-saturns-moon-enceladus-has-all-of-the-ingredients-necessary-for-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extraterrestrial life</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-could-the-miranda-moon-support-life">Could the Miranda moon support life?</h2>



<p>It's still too early to pack our bags for Miranda, but the possibility of it harboring life is tantalizing. However, as Nordheim points out, we still need more data to confirm if an ocean definitely exists.</p>



<p>While recent research has provided fresh insights into Uranus's moons, we've barely scratched the surface. </p>



<p>"We're squeezing the last bit of science we can from Voyager 2's images," says Nordheim. </p>



<p>To truly understand Miranda's potential, we need to launch new missions to Uranus. Until then, we hold our breath and watch this icy moon with great anticipation.</p>

<p>In the grand scheme of our solar system, Miranda might just be the underdog story we didn't see coming. </p>



<p>This tiny moon, once thought to be a frozen, inactive world, could be hiding a vast ocean beneath its patchwork surface. </p>



<p>The idea that such a small body, orbiting one of the most distant planets, might have an environment capable of sustaining life is nothing short of mind-blowing.</p>



<p>All of this goes to show that there's so much left to discover out there. Revisiting old data with fresh eyes has opened up new possibilities and questions. </p>



<p>Maybe it's high time we head back to Uranus and take a closer look at Miranda and its neighboring moons.</p>

<p>For countless individuals worldwide, grappling with the lingering impacts of COVID-19 months after their initial recovery has become a puzzling reality. </p>



<p>Often referred to as "long COVID," the condition is marked by an array of recurring symptoms, including chest pain and heart palpitations.</p>



<p>But why do these symptoms persist? Recent research by the University of Queensland (UQ) offers profound insights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cardiovascular-impact-of-long-covid">Cardiovascular impact of long COVID </h2>



<p>Getting to the root of the matter, the <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Queensland</a>-led investigation focused on post-COVID cardiovascular issues. The goal was to understand why chest pain and heart palpitations persist among long COVID sufferers.</p>



<p>"We discovered elevated levels of cytokines, proteins which help control inflammation in the body, in the blood samples of people at about 18 months post-infection with SARS-CoV-2," said Professor Kirsty Short. </p>



<p>"Lab studies showed these trace-level cytokines had a direct effect on the functionality of cardiomyocytes, the cells of the heart responsible for its pump function."</p>



<p>Professor Short noted that these particular types of cells are fundamental building blocks for our heart, so damaging them can lead to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-century-of-progress-in-the-fight-against-cardiovascular-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular</a> symptoms.</p>



<p>Until now, the role of chronic inflammation in cardiovascular symptoms had been unclear, particularly in cases where symptoms persisted for over a year after infection. </p>



<p>These findings bring the medical community one step closer to understanding the full extent of COVID-19’s long-term impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-deaths-increased-during-covid-reversing-progress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart</a> health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-long-covid-through-blood-samples">Studying long COVID through blood samples</h2>



<p>To explore the mysteries of long COVID, the team analyzed the blood of 50 participants from across Australia.</p>



<p>This cohort included individuals who had been living with long COVID for over a year, those who had recovered from COVID-19, and individuals who had never been infected by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-virus-lingers-body-two-years-after-infection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virus</a>.</p>



<p>A unique technology developed at UQ's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) called "immuno-storm chip" nanotechnology, was the tool of choice to investigate trace elevated cytokines. The experts also examined markers linked with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-patients-experience-changes-in-heart-tissue/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiac tissue</a> damage.</p>



<p>Although excited about the findings, Professor Short remains cautious. "It's only early days and these results require validation in additional patient cohorts, including those infected with more recent SARS-CoV-2 strains."</p>



<p>Professor Short also noted that the study's focus was primarily on people with cardiovascular symptoms.</p>



<p>Despite the limitations, the research paves the path toward a better understanding of long COVID. It presents comprehensive insights into this complex disease and could potentially enhance diagnosis and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simple-treatment-restores-sense-of-smell-in-long-covid-patients/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">treatment options</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-collaborative-scientific-endeavor">A collaborative scientific endeavor</h2>



<p>The research team included Jane Sinclair, a Ph.D. candidate from UQ's School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, Courtney Vedelago from AIBN, and Dr. Feargal J. Ryan of the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute.</p>



<p>The study represents a collaborative effort by multiple institutes, including UQ's School of Mathematics and Physics, Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Faculty of Medicine, Mater Health Queensland, Mater Research Institute-UQ, and several other institutions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-covid-s-lasting-impact-on-heart-health">COVID’s lasting impact on heart health</h2>



<p>The findings from the study highlight the importance of understanding the long-term cardiovascular effects of COVID-19, particularly for individuals grappling with symptoms over a year post-infection.</p>



<p>By identifying elevated cytokine levels and their impact on cardiomyocytes, the research opens doors for targeted treatments focused on reducing inflammation to protect heart health in long COVID patients.</p>



<p>"An estimated 65 million people globally suffer from post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), with many experiencing cardiovascular symptoms like chest pain and heart palpitations," noted the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-guiding-future-research">Guiding future research </h2>



<p>While the research team remains cautious about drawing broad conclusions, they acknowledge the study’s potential in guiding future research. </p>



<p>This initial study suggests a need for expanded research across larger and more diverse populations to confirm the findings. </p>



<p>Additionally, future investigations could explore whether specific anti-inflammatory therapies might mitigate the persistent cardiovascular symptoms observed in long COVID patients.</p>



<p>This study marks a pivotal step in understanding long COVID, but it’s only the beginning. By continuing to investigate the role of chronic inflammation, scientists hope to develop clearer diagnostic tools and treatments, ultimately improving the quality of life for those affected by this complex condition.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-024-01838-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Microbiology</a></em>.</p>

Long COVID inflammation damages heart cells

<p>Once a year, over the icy desolation of the Antarctic, an ominous hole forms in the ozone layer. However, the 2024 story has taken a rather hopeful turn as the annual ozone hole was smaller compared to previous years.</p>



<p>Scientists at NOAA and NASA project that, if we keep up the momentum, we could see a full recovery of the ozone layer by 2066.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seventh-smallest-ozone-hole">Seventh-smallest ozone hole</h2>



<p>The 2024 ozone hole, as observed during the peak of the depletion season from September 7 to October 13, held the historic rank of the seventh-smallest. </p>



<p>The Montreal Protocol, an environmental treaty that phased out <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/decline-in-ozone-depleting-chemicals-is-an-encouraging-trend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ozone-destroying chemicals</a>, was ratified in 1992 and has proven to be a significant achievement.</p>



<p>Over the years, the ozone-depleted region has been alarmingly large, with 2024's size averaging nearly three times the size of continental United States.</p>



<p>The worst of the ozone hole was seen on September 28, when it swelled to 8.5 million square miles - only to later shrink.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recovery-of-the-ozone-hole">Recovery of the ozone hole</h2>



<p>The experts attribute this year's improvement to two key drivers - the continued decline of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) after the Montreal Protocol and a serendipitous surge of ozone carried by air currents from north of the Antarctic.</p>



<p>Paul Newman, leader of NASA's ozone research team and a chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, elaborated on the state of the ozone hole. </p>



<p>"The 2024 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ozone-hole-exposes-wildlife-to-harmful-uv-radiation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic hole</a> is smaller than ozone holes seen in the early 2000s. The gradual improvement we've seen in the past two decades shows that international efforts that curbed ozone-destroying chemicals are working," said Newman.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-our-shield-against-solar-rays">Our shield against solar rays</h2>



<p>Existing way up in Earth's atmosphere, an ozone-rich layer serves as a planetary parasol, safeguarding us from the sun's harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/uv-radiation-played-a-role-in-earths-largest-mass-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultraviolet</a> (UV) rays. </p>



<p>When the ozone layer thins out, more UV radiation seeps through, leading to an increased risk of skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to aquatic ecosystems, as well as a reduction in agricultural yields.</p>



<p>Back in the 1970s, the scientific community was deeply concerned about CFCs - chemicals that were widely used in refrigerants, aerosols, insulating foams and even in some fire suppression systems. </p>



<p>These chemicals were gnawing away at the ozone layer. By the mid 1980s, the ozone layer over the Antarctic was drastically depleted. </p>



<p>It was then that the world came together to sign the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/1987-ozone-treaty-had-an-unexpected-benefit-for-the-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Montreal Protocol in 1987</a>, pledging to phase out CFCs and replace them with eco-friendly alternatives by 2010. Today, we are witnessing the success of this global commitment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-road-to-ozone-recovery">The road to ozone recovery</h2>



<p>Stephen Montzka, a senior scientist with NOAA's Global Monitoring Laboratory, urges caution.</p>



<p>"For 2024, we can see that the ozone hole's severity is below average compared to other years in the past three decades, but the ozone layer is still far from being fully healed," said Montzka.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cfcs-are-not-the-only-culprit-bushfire-smoke-may-also-destroy-ozone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CFCs</a> that are already in our atmosphere will take several decades to disintegrate. As their levels gradually drop, we can expect the ozone layer to bounce back, leading to the slow but certain reduction of ozone holes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-our-progress">Monitoring our progress</h2>



<p>NASA and NOAA scientists monitor the ozone hole yearly, noting that variations in atmospheric conditions, including transport of ozone-rich air from other regions, can influence its size and depth each year.</p>



<p>The scientists rely on a suite of systems to keep a close eye on the ozone layer. These include instruments on NASA's Aura satellite and NOAA's polar orbiting satellites.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a> also uses weather balloons, released from the South Pole Baseline Atmospheric Observatory, to measure ozone concentrations in Dobson units.</p>



<p>The 2024 concentration hit its lowest measurement at 109 Dobson units on October 5th.</p>



<p>"This is well below the 225 Dobson units that was typical of the ozone cover above the Antarctic in 1979,” said NOAA research chemist Bryan Johnson. "So, there’s still a long way to go before atmospheric ozone is back to the levels before the advent of widespread CFC pollution.”</p>



<p>Nonetheless, it's crucial to remember that every small step toward recovery brings us closer to a healthier planet.</p>

<p>In the vast ocean, you might think there's safety in numbers for fish consider to be "prey" as they seek to elude predators. Recent observations suggest, however, that for some fish, grouping together can actually spell trouble.</p>



<p>During the height of capelin spawning season off the coast of Norway, scientists witnessed a dramatic encounter that challenges our understanding of survival strategies in the sea.</p>



<p>Professor Nicholas Makris, a mechanical and ocean engineering expert at <a href="https://www.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a>, led the team that captured this remarkable event. </p>



<p>Alongside his colleagues, he observed how the behavior of tiny fish can have big consequences when ocean predators <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">are on the prowl</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-fish-called-capelin">Arctic fish called capelin</h2>



<p>Every February, billions of capelin -- a small Arctic fish about the size of an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmed-salmon-diet-would-be-beneficial-for-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anchovy</a> -- embark on a long journey. </p>



<p>They migrate from the edge of the Arctic ice sheet down to the Norwegian coast to lay their eggs. This migration is not just crucial for their reproduction but also plays a significant role in the Arctic food web.</p>



<p>Capelin are a key food source for many marine animals, including seabirds, whales, and larger fish. Their journey supports the diets of these predators, making capelin an essential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/japanese-sardines-may-be-signaling-major-shifts-in-the-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">link in the ecosystem</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atlantic-cod-are-ocean-predators">Atlantic cod are ocean predators</h2>



<p>Hot on the tails of the capelin are Atlantic cod, their primary predators. </p>



<p>As the cod migrate southward, they take advantage of the spawning season to feed extensively on capelin. </p>



<p>This annual feast is a critical time for cod to build up energy reserves.</p>



<p>It's a natural cycle: capelin spawn, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-safe-havens-may-no-longer-protect-pacific-cod/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cod feed</a>, and the balance of the ecosystem is maintained. But what happens when this balance is disrupted?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sonic-imaging-sees-underwater">Sonic imaging sees underwater</h2>



<p>To understand these underwater dynamics, Makris and his team used a cutting-edge sonic imaging technique called Ocean Acoustic Waveguide Remote Sensing (<a href="https://acoustics.mit.edu/faculty/makris/new_website_2022/ONR2018ViewgraphsApril8.2018.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OAWRS</a>). </p>



<p>This system sends sound waves deep into the ocean, bouncing off fish and other obstacles, allowing scientists to create real-time maps over vast areas.</p>

<p>Previously, researchers could map fish movements but couldn't tell which species they were observing. </p>



<p>This time, they applied a new multispectral technique that differentiates species based on how their swim bladders resonate with sound.</p>



<p>"Fish have swim bladders that resonate like bells," Makris explains. "Cod have large swim bladders that have a low resonance, like a Big Ben bell, whereas capelin have tiny swim bladders that resonate like the highest notes on a piano."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-massive-gathering-begins">Massive gathering begins</h2>



<p>On February 27, 2014, at the peak of the capelin <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-season-fishing-may-shrink-the-size-of-salmon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spawning season</a>, the team witnessed something astonishing. </p>



<p>In the early morning, capelin moved individually in loose clusters along the Norwegian coast. But as the sun rose, they began descending to deeper waters, possibly searching for spawning grounds.</p>



<p>As they dove, the capelin started to group together. Individual fish aligned with their neighbors, and soon, a massive shoal formed. This shoal spanned over six miles and included about 23 million fish moving in unison.</p>



<p>"What we're finding is capelin have this critical density, which came out of a physical theory, which we have now observed in the wild," Makris says. </p>



<p>"If they are close enough to each other, they can take on the average speed and direction of other fish that they can sense around them, and can then form a massive and coherent shoal."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-predators-assemble">Ocean predators assemble</h2>



<p>But the capelin weren't the only ones gathering. Individual cod began to notice the enormous shoal and started grouping together themselves. </p>



<p>In response to the capelin, a cod shoal formed, amounting to about 2.5 million fish.</p>



<p>Over just a few hours, this shoal of cod overtook the capelin. The predators consumed over 10 million capelin -- more than half of the gathered prey -- across miles of ocean. </p>



<p>Then, just as quickly as they formed, both shoals dissolved, and the fish scattered.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predator-vs-prey-ocean-battle">Predator vs. prey ocean battle</h2>



<p>"It's the first time seeing predator-prey interaction on a huge scale, and it's a coherent battle of survival," Makris remarks. </p>



<p>"This is happening over a monstrous scale, and we're watching a wave of capelin zoom in, like a wave around a sports stadium, and they kind of gather together to form a defense. It's also happening with the predators, coming together to coherently attack."</p>

<p>"That's not an issue for a healthy population with many spatially distributed population centers or ecological hotspots. But as the number of these hotspots decreases due to climate and human stresses, the kind of natural 'catastrophic' predation event we witnessed of a keystone species could lead to dramatic consequences for that species as well as the many species dependent on them."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ocean-predator-events-matter">Why ocean predator events matter</h2>



<p>Understanding these massive interactions is crucial. Capelin are a keystone species, meaning their health directly affects many other species in the ecosystem. </p>



<p>Continuous monitoring at a scale that captures individual fish behavior across thousands of square miles can inform conservation efforts.</p>



<p>"It's been shown time and again that, when a population is on the verge of collapse, you will have that one last shoal. And when that last big, dense group is gone, there's a collapse," Makris warns. </p>



<p>"So you've got to know what's there before it's gone, because the pressures are not in their favor."</p>

<p>Makris and his team, including co-authors Shourav Pednekar and Ankita Jain at MIT, and Olav Rune Godø of the Institute of Marine Research in Norway, hope to use OAWRS to study other species. </p>

<p>According to most scientists, we see only a fraction of the universe -- about five percent, to be more precise. The stars, planets, gas clouds, and even black holes we observe make up just a tiny sliver of what's out there. The rest is referred to as dark matter.</p>



<p>Patrick Huber, a physicist with a penchant for bold ideas, is leading a team that's trying to find the missing 95 percent. </p>



<p>Instead of using massive telescopes or particle accelerators, they're looking for this dark matter in billion-year-old rocks right here on Earth.</p>



<p>Based at <a href="https://www.vt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virginia Tech</a>, Huber and his collaborators are on an unconventional quest to detect dark matter by examining ancient minerals deep within the Earth. </p>



<p>They're building a new lab to test their theories, backed by significant funding from the National Science Foundation (<a href="https://www.nsf.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF</a>) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (<a href="https://www.energy.gov/nnsa/national-nuclear-security-administration" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NNSA</a>).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-dark-matter-mystery">The dark matter mystery</h2>



<p>Dark matter is a mysterious substance that doesn't emit or absorb light, making it invisible to traditional instruments. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-dark-matter-does-not-exist-and-the-universe-is-27-billion-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Most scientists believe it exists</a> because galaxies rotate faster than they should based on the visible matter alone. Something unseen must be providing the extra <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/theory-gravity-exists-without-mass-so-dark-matter-does-not-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational pull</a>.</p>



<p>For decades, researchers have tried to catch a glimpse of dark matter by setting up experiments deep underground to shield them from cosmic rays. </p>



<p>But so far, these efforts haven't yielded <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-holes-are-not-the-secret-source-of-dark-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concrete evidence</a>. Huber's team is flipping the script by looking into the Earth's own history for signs of dark matter interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-not-try-something-new">Why not try something new?</h2>



<p>"It's crazy. When I first heard about this idea, I was like -- this is insane. I want to do it," Huber said. </p>



<p>He's stepping out of his comfort zone as a theoretical physicist to dive into experimental work. "Other people in their midlife crisis might take a mistress or get a sports car. I got a lab," he joked.</p>



<p>The concept is to examine the crystal structures of ancient rocks for tiny disruptions caused by dark matter particles colliding with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atomic-nucleus-made-of-quarks-and-gluons-reproduced-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atomic nuclei</a>. </p>



<p>Over billions of years, these rare events might have left subtle tracks that advanced imaging techniques can detect.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-matter-tracks-hidden-in-rocks">Dark matter tracks hidden in rocks</h2>



<p>"When a high-energy particle bounces off a nucleus inside a rock, it can knock it out of place," explained Vsevolod Ivanov, a researcher collaborating with Huber. </p>



<p>"We'll take a crystal that's been exposed to different particles for millions of years and subtract the distributions that correspond to things we do know. Whatever is left must be something new, and that could be the dark matter."</p>



<p>One of the challenges is distinguishing these potential dark matter signals from the background noise of natural radioactivity. </p>



<p>Robert Bodnar, a University Distinguished Professor and expert in geochemistry, is helping the team identify the best minerals to study -- ones that have been shielded from both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-rays-help-archaeologists-determine-age-discoveries-prehistoric-settlements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic rays</a> and Earth's own radioactive emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-edge-imaging-techniques">Cutting-edge imaging techniques</h2>



<p>To visualize these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tiny disruptions</a>, the team is using cutting-edge imaging technology borrowed from microbiology. </p>



<p>Collaborators at the University of Zurich's <a href="https://www.hifo.uzh.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brain Research Institute</a> have provided access to equipment typically used to map neural pathways in animals.</p>



<p>They've started generating 3D images of particle tracks in synthetic lithium fluoride crystals. </p>



<p>While these artificial crystals aren't suitable for detecting dark matter, they serve as a test bed to refine the imaging techniques without damaging precious natural samples.</p>

<p>In an unexpected twist, the methods developed for this project might have immediate applications. </p>



<p>"We're seeing potential for creating portable devices to monitor <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molten-salt-could-reshape-the-future-of-nuclear-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear reactors</a>," Huber noted. These "nuclear transparency devices" could enhance safety and security measures.</p>



<p>The interdisciplinary nature of the team is one of its strengths. Combining physics, geology, and advanced imaging, they're breaking down traditional barriers between fields. </p>



<p>"This kind of collaboration is where new discoveries happen," Huber said.</p>



<p>The new lab being built at Robeson Hall is a hub for innovation. With $3.5 million from the National Science Foundation and an additional $750,000 from the National Nuclear Security Administration, the project is well-resourced to tackle its ambitious goals.</p>

<p>"Science doesn't always give you what you expect," Huber remarked. "Sometimes, you set out to answer one question and end up discovering something entirely different."</p>



<p>If successful, this approach could revolutionize our understanding of the universe. </p>

<p>They're hoping that by examining these billion-year-old minerals, they might spot tiny disruptions caused by dark matter particles interacting with atomic nuclei -- something no one else has pulled off yet. </p>



<p>With a mix of physics, geology, and some pretty fancy imaging tech, they hope that taking the road less traveled may open doors to unexpected applications like portable nuclear monitoring devices.</p>



<p>As they begin breaking open Earth rocks in hopes of solving one of the biggest remaining scientific mysteries, one can't help but root them on. </p>

<p>Just how long would it take for a monkey randomly pressing keys on a keyboard to type the works of Shakespeare? It's a proposition that electrifies the imagination - one that's known as the Infinite Monkey Theorem.</p>



<p>The theorem is a favorite in pop culture, making appearances on "The Simpsons," "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," and even TikTok. But how practical is it?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-infinite-monkey-theorem">Infinite Monkey Theorem</h2>



<p>The Infinite Monkey Theorem proposes a curious thought: given infinite time, a monkey randomly pressing keys on a typewriter could produce the complete works of Shakespeare <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flipping-a-coin-is-not-a-50-50-random-toss-up-as-most-people-think/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">purely by chance</a>. </p>



<p>This whimsical idea offers us intriguing insights into probability, randomness, and unexpected outcomes.</p>



<p>While the theorem does hold water, it glosses over some critical details, starting with infinite time.</p>



<p>Professor Stephen Woodcock and Jay Falletta, both mathematicians at the University of Technology Sydney (<a href="https://www.uts.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UTS</a>), decided to examine the theorem through the lens of our finite universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monkeys-typing-and-a-finite-universe">Monkeys, typing, and a finite universe</h2>



<p>"The Infinite Monkey Theorem only considers the infinite limit, with either an infinite number of monkeys or an infinite time period of monkey labor," said Professor Woodcock.</p>



<p>This prompted the researchers to consider the odds of a string of letters being typed by a finite number of monkeys within a finite time, consistent with estimates for the lifespan of our universe.</p>



<p>For their calculations, they assumed a 30-key keyboard, including the English alphabet and common punctuation.</p>



<p>The typing populace consisted of a single monkey and the current global population of about 200,000 chimpanzees. All of them were considered to be speed typists, hitting a key every second until the universe ends in about 10<sup>100</sup> years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-probabilities-and-perceptions">Probabilities and perceptions</h2>



<p>The study produced some fascinating results, revealing that a chimp had around a 5% chance to type the word "bananas" in its own lifetime.</p>



<p>Yet, even with an army of chimps, the prospect of typing out the Bard's entire works (comprising approximately 884,647 words) before the universe's curtain call is a near impossibility.</p>



<p>"It is not plausible that, even with improved typing speeds or an increase in chimpanzee populations, monkey labor will ever be a viable tool for developing non-trivial written works," noted the researchers.</p>

<p>"This finding places the theorem among other probability puzzles and paradoxes - such as the St. Petersburg paradox, Zeno's paradox, and the Ross-Littlewood paradox - where using the idea of infinite resources gives results that don't match up with what we get when we consider the constraints of our universe," said Professor Woodcock.</p>



<p>So, while the spirit of the Infinite Monkey Theorem is true, its practical application is a different story altogether. </p>



<p>It serves as an imaginative way to understand <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prime-numbers-not-random-can-be-predicted-upending-beliefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">probability and randomness</a>. But it is, in essence, more of a probability paradox - a light-hearted jest in the complex world of mathematics.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet <em>Archaeopteris</em>: the first modern tree</h2>



<p>The star of this ancient forest is <em>Archaeopteris</em> – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur <em>Archaeopteryx</em>. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.</p>



<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
