<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Viruses, those tiny invaders wriggling their way into host cells are a marvel of biological survival. Among them, arteriviruses, found in a variety of animals across the globe, have evoked great interest.</p>



<p>These viruses have remained largely elusive to the human immune system. A recent study has unveiled an intriguing mechanism by which arteriviruses sneak into host cells and initiate an infection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-friendly-protein-turned-foe">Friendly protein turned foe</h2>



<p>In the center of this microscopic drama is a protein found in mammals - an unsuspecting gatekeeper that unwittingly opens the door to arteriviruses.</p>



<p>The research team also discovered a monoclonal antibody - an immune system ally - that binds to this protein, effectively shielding the cells from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-makes-a-virus-capable-of-causing-a-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viral infection</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arterivirus-infections">Arterivirus infections</h2>



<p>Why should we concern ourselves with arteriviruses? These are viruses that we do not have immunity against.</p>



<p>“It’s important to consider that since we have no known arteriviruses infecting people that we’re essentially immunologically naïve, so we can’t rely on preexisting immunity to help us,” said co-lead author&nbsp;Cody Warren, assistant professor of&nbsp;<a href="https://vet.osu.edu/departments-offices/biosciences" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">veterinary biosciences</a>&nbsp;at The Ohio State University (<a href="https://www.osu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OSU</a>).</p>



<p>To understand the gravity of the situation, we must consider the potential implications. Arteriviruses are found in various mammals like non-human primates, possums, pigs, and horses. They are often present without causing noticeable disease.</p>



<p>But, when they switch hosts, the viruses can cause serious health problems such as pneumonia, hemorrhagic fever, or encephalitis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-journey-of-a-virus-in-a-cell">Journey of a virus in a cell</h2>



<p>In the realm of viruses, breaking and entering is a step-by-step process. For <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-use-gps-to-move-precisely-within-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arteriviruses</a>, the first stop is the FcRn receptor, a protein complex formed by the coming together of two genes - FCGRT and B2M. This receptor otherwise plays a benign role, carrying antibodies across the placenta to a fetus.</p>



<p>However, when a virus comes along, the FcRn receptor becomes a conduit for infection. It is responsible for ushering in at least five different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/influenza-is-considered-the-biggest-pandemic-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arteriviruses</a> infecting monkeys, pigs, and horses.</p>



<p>When the researchers disrupted the FCGRT gene, the primary component of the FcRn complex, the cells became resistant to the infection. Better yet, pre-treating cells with monoclonal antibodies against FcRn protected them entirely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arteriviral-infection-of-host-cells">Arteriviral infection of host cells</h2>



<p>There's a fascinating genetic subplot to this story. It turns out, the susceptibility of mammalian hosts to the arterivirus infection varies based on differences in their FcRn's genetic sequence. </p>



<p>Essentially, the sequence variations of this receptor protein can either facilitate or impede cross-species infections.</p>



<p>The surface protein CD163, which has a history of playing a gatekeeper role for the simian hemorrhagic fever virus (an arterivirus), also came into the spotlight in this study. </p>



<p>Experiments demonstrated that CD163 interacts with FcRn and aids in arteriviral infection of host cells. By identifying these arterivirus infection steps, we have reached an important milestone.</p>



<p>“If we’re looking at virus biology, one of the most important things we can understand is entry mechanisms. Because if you can stop the ability of a virus to infect a cell through disrupting that initial virus-receptor contact, now you have a potential therapeutic strategy,” said Warren.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-getting-prepared-for-the-next-pandemic">Getting prepared for the next pandemic </h2>



<p>Unveiling the secrets of how arteriviruses infiltrate host cells leaves us better prepared to face any future viral threats that may emerge. </p>



<p>With an existing monoclonal antibody that can prevent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-viruses-link-up-and-bloom-into-amazing-sunflower-structures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viral infection</a> in cells, we have a ray of hope in our pre-pandemic preparedness toolkit.</p>



<p>"If one of these viruses emerged in humans, I believe we’d be in big trouble. So that is the motivator for me,” said Adam Bailey, assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a> and co-lead author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>Knowledge is indeed power. As we deepen our understanding of viruses infecting cells, we inch closer to better prevention methods and ideally, fewer global health crises. </p>



<p>"Understanding the nuances of species-specific FcRn utilization will be important in anticipating the spillover of arteriviruses into new hosts, as our data indicates that FcRn can function as a molecular barrier to cross-species arterivirus infection," wrote the researchers.</p>

Animal viruses have a secret ally to infect human cells

<p>As we move forward in the 21st century, it's becoming clearer that the air we breathe is having an impact on us, well beyond just our lungs. </p>



<p>In a new study from the University of Southern California (USC), experts found that a particular component of air pollution is linked to poor learning and memory in children. The same component is also associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia in adults.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pm2-5-and-its-components">PM2.5 and its components</h2>



<p>So, what is this worrying part of our air? It is most commonly known as PM2.5. This refers to particulate matter that is less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. These particles are a mixture of dust, soot, organic compounds, and metals.</p>



<p>Due to their small size, PM2.5 particles from air pollution can travel deeply into our lungs, bypass the blood-brain barrier, and potentially cause serious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-air-pollution-impacts-brain-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory and health problems</a>.</p>



<p>One particular component of PM2.5, called ammonium nitrate, has caught the attention of scientists. It forms when ammonia gas, which is produced by agricultural activities, and nitric acid, produced by burning fossil fuels, react in the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-pollution-s-impact-on-memory">Air pollution's impact on memory</h2>



<p>The research was led by Megan Herting, an associate professor of population and public health sciences at the <a href="https://keck.usc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Keck School of Medicine</a> at USC.</p>



<p>"Our study highlights the need for detailed research on particulate matter sources and chemical components," said Herting. "It suggests that understanding these nuances is crucial for informing air quality regulations and understanding long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-impacts-brain-development-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neurocognitive effects</a>."</p>



<p>How did this study come about? Herting has been working with data from the largest brain study across America, known as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD), for several years. </p>



<p>The goal of the research was to understand the potential effects of air pollution on the brain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sources-of-pollution">Sources of pollution</h2>



<p>The primary source of PM2.5 is fossil fuel combustion, especially within urban areas. However, other sources such as wildfires, agriculture, marine aerosols, and chemical reactions also play a critical role. </p>



<p>Herting and her team previously studied the overall impact of PM2.5 on cognition in children and didn't find a significant connection.</p>



<p>In this recent study, the team used statistical techniques to look at 15 chemical components in PM2.5 and their sources individually. That's when ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound usually resulting from agricultural and farming activities, emerged as a surprising <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-is-fueling-more-intense-and-dangerous-thunderstorms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">culprit</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ammonium-nitrate-and-memory">Ammonium nitrate and memory</h2>



<p>"No matter how we examined it, on its own or with other pollutants, the most robust finding was that ammonium nitrate particles were linked to poorer learning and memory," said Herting. “That suggests that overall PM2.5 is one thing, but for cognition, it's a mixture effect of what you're exposed to.”</p>



<p>This revelation highlights the need for reducing the overall quantity of PM2.5, as well as understanding its composition and the effects of its specific components.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-children-from-air-pollution">Protecting children from air pollution</h2>



<p>The findings carry substantial implications for public health policies. Considering the diverse components of PM2.5, blanket regulations may not be as effective as policies that target specific pollutants like ammonium nitrate.</p>



<p>Policymakers could consider enforcing stricter emission controls on agricultural practices and industries known for high ammonia emissions. </p>



<p>Furthermore, implementing educational programs to heighten public awareness about the sources and risks associated with particulate matter can empower communities to support and adapt to these regulatory changes. </p>



<p>These informed approaches can pave the way for improved air quality standards and, consequently, better health outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-research-on-air-pollution-and-memory">Research on air pollution and memory</h2>



<p>The study opens new avenues for research into the molecular mechanisms by which ammonium nitrate impacts cognitive functions. </p>



<p>Future studies could explore the biological pathways affected by this compound in air pollution and delineate its interactions within the memory and overall brain. Longitudinal research initiatives might help uncover how exposure to different PM2.5 components over a lifetime contributes to cognitive decline in old age. </p>



<p>Additionally, exploring geographic and seasonal variations in particulate matter composition can provide insights into regional vulnerabilities and help tailor interventions more effectively. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-health-and-public-well-being">Mental health and public well-being </h2>



<p>These scientific endeavors will be crucial for crafting policies that effectively safeguard mental health and public well-being in an era of rapidly changing environmental dynamics.</p>



<p>So what's next for these researchers? They intend to explore how these mixtures and sources of air pollution may link with individual memory variations and brain phenotypes during child and adolescent development.</p>



<p>This research is important for our children's health and the future of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet</a>. The findings could lead to changes in air quality and public health policies. </p>

<p>Unlike previous space telescopes, SPHEREx will explore the universe in 102 infrared colors, providing unprecedented insights into cosmic origins and the potential presence of water on planets. </p>

<p>Although invisible to the human eye, this multicolor infrared mapping will shed light on mysteries dating back to the birth of the universe.</p>



<p>“We are the first mission to look at the whole sky in so many colors,” said SPHEREx Principal Investigator Jamie Bock, affiliated with NASA’s <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> and <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/">Caltech</a>. “Whenever astronomers look at the sky in a new way, we can expect discoveries.”</p>



<p>The heart of SPHEREx’s capability lies in its use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-secrets-of-water-molecules-discovered-in-the-lab-through-spectroscopy/">spectroscopy</a>. This method separates light into its individual colors, much like a prism breaking sunlight into a rainbow.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By observing the infrared light emitted by hundreds of millions of stars and galaxies, scientists can derive critical information about their composition and distance from Earth. This data will be synthesized into an all-sky map, unlike any seen before.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-water-and-life-critical-elements">Tracking water and life-critical elements</h2>



<p>A significant mission goal is understanding the distribution of water ice, carbon dioxide, and other essential molecules across the Milky Way. This information will illuminate how these substances contribute to planet formation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Research suggests that most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-water-travel-through-our-solar-system/">water</a> in our galaxy is found in icy form on dust grains. These ice-coated particles can be incorporated into newly forming planets, possibly fostering environments capable of supporting oceans like those on Earth.</p>



<p>The unique spectrum of SPHEREx will allow scientists to pinpoint where water and other molecules are most concentrated. The chemical signatures left in the colors of the infrared light tell us exactly what these elements are.</p>

<p>While telescopes such as Hubble and James Webb provide detailed imagery of individual celestial objects, SPHEREx combines wide-ranging sky surveys with detailed spectral data. </p>

<p>For ages, people have wondered whether sea stars, commonly called starfish, have a head or not. Unlike creatures like worms or fish, where it's clear which end is which, starfish have five identical arms that can all move independently. </p>



<p>This has made it hard to figure out where their front or back might be.</p>



<p>"It's as if the sea star is completely missing a trunk, and is best described as just a head crawling along the seafloor," said Laurent Formery, a postdoctoral scholar and lead author of a new study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-starfish-symmetry-is-a-mystery">Starfish symmetry is a mystery</h2>



<p>Formery works in the labs at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a> and <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Berkeley</a>, both led by investigators from the Chan Zuckerberg <a href="https://www.czbiohub.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Biohub</a> San Francisco. </p>



<p>Their research has found that, contrary to previous beliefs, starfish are now assumed to be "all head" and no traditional body at all.</p>



<p>The researchers discovered that genes associated with head development are active throughout the starfish's entire "body," while genes related to the torso and tail are mostly absent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-look-at-an-old-question">New look at an old question</h2>



<p>Most animals, including humans, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unraveling-the-story-of-early-animal-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">have a body plan</a> that's symmetrical on both sides and runs from head to tail. </p>



<p>Scientists have long understood how genes control this body plan in creatures like fruit flies and worms. </p>



<p>But starfish, which belong to a group called echinoderms, have puzzled researchers because of their unique five-point symmetry and lack of an obvious head or tail.</p>



<p>Echinoderms like starfish, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-urchins-have-some-unexpected-predators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea urchins</a>, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-cucumbers-protect-coral-reefs-from-disease-and-death/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea cucumbers</a> have always been a bit of a mystery. Their unusual body structure doesn't fit neatly into the typical patterns seen in most animals. </p>



<p>Some scientists thought that perhaps each arm of a starfish was like a separate head-to-tail axis. Others speculated that the axis might run from the top to the bottom of the sea star.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-starfish-heads-with-cutting-edge-genetics">Studying starfish heads with cutting-edge genetics</h2>



<p>To get to the bottom of this, the researchers used advanced genetic sequencing techniques. They partnered with <a href="https://www.pacb.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PacBio</a>, a company that develops genome-sequencing devices. </p>



<p>Using a method called HiFi sequencing, they were able to read long stretches of DNA quickly and accurately. This allowed them to see which genes were active in different parts of the starfish's body.</p>



<p>"The kind of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-ever-ocean-dna-study-uncovers-mysteries-of-marine-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sequencing</a> that would have taken months can now be done in a matter of hours, and it's hundreds of times cheaper than just five years ago," said David Rank, a former PacBio Scientific Fellow and co-senior author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genes-of-starfish-are-only-associated-with-heads">Genes of starfish are only associated with heads</h2>



<p>What they found was unexpected. Genes associated with the front part of the head in other animals were active in the middle of each starfish arm.</p>



<p>As you moved toward the edges of the arms, genes associated with more rear parts of the head became active. There was little to no expression of genes linked to the torso and tail.</p>



<p>"These results suggest that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-eating-sea-cucumbers-can-prevent-diabetes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">echinoderms</a>, and starfish in particular, have the most dramatic example of decoupling of the head and the trunk regions that we are aware of today," Formery said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-curveball">Evolutionary curveball</h2>



<p>This suggests that starfish might have lost their bodies over evolutionary time, ending up as creatures that are essentially all head. </p>



<p>The team is excited about what this means for understanding evolution. They hope to investigate whether similar patterns are found in other echinoderms like sea urchins and sea cucumbers.</p>



<p>"If we take the opportunity to explore unusual animals that are operating in unusual ways, that means we are broadening our perspective of biology, which is eventually going to help us solve both ecological and biomedical problems," said Daniel Rokhsar of UC Berkeley, an expert on the molecular evolution of animal species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-unanswered-questions-remain">Many unanswered questions remain</h2>



<p>Formery is also interested in learning more about the starfish's nervous system, which remains a bit of a mystery. </p>



<p>Starfish walk by moving water through thousands of tube feet and digest their prey by extruding their stomachs outside of their bodies. </p>



<p>It only stands to reason that these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brittle-stars-have-no-brain-but-still-manage-to-learn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unusual creatures</a> have also evolved completely unexpected strategies for staying healthy.</p>



<p>"It just opens a ton of new questions that we can now start to explore," Formery added. </p>



<p>Questions like how their unique body plan affects their behavior and interaction with the environment are next on the list.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Christopher Lowe, a marine and developmental biologist at Stanford University, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts. </p>



<p>"The Biohub's willingness to take risks and provide support for a joint position between our labs has been critical for the success of this project," he said.</p>



<p>The collaboration between institutions and the use of innovative technology have paved the way for this breakthrough. </p>



<p>The researchers utilized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/symbiotic-relationship-plant-roots-underground-mycorrhizal-fungi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spatial transcriptomics</a> to pinpoint which genes are active in precise locations within the starfish's body, providing a detailed map of genetic activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-starfish-heads-and-humanity">Starfish, heads, and humanity</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, this study flips our understanding of starfish on its head -- literally. </p>



<p>By revealing that starfish are essentially all head and no body, the researchers have opened up a whole new way of thinking about these fascinating creatures. </p>



<p>"Exploring these unique animals broadens our perspective of biology," Rokhsar concluded.</p>



<p>Their unique genetic makeup challenges what we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ecosystem-behavior-earth-first-sea-creatures-stirring-water-drove-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal evolution</a> and body structures.</p>



<p>Looking ahead, this discovery unravels some of the mysteries surrounding starfish while setting the stage for exploring other unusual animals.</p>



<p>Studying these amazingly unique creatures might even lead to breakthroughs in medicine and new approaches to fighting diseases. </p>

<p>Across the natural world, puncture threats are nearly unavoidable. From animal fangs to plant thorns, nature is full of sharp tools capable of breaking through many layers of defense. </p>



<p>Surprisingly, the skin that covers many animals - including pigs and humans - has its unique way of mitigating these potentially harmful occurrences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skin-reduces-internal-damage">Skin reduces internal damage</h2>



<p>In a recent study, researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign discovered that our skin - that thin, stretchy layer wrapping our bodies - is not just an exterior shell.</p>



<p>It plays an active role in lessening the internal damage when punctured, and it does so even better than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-sweaters-use-synthetic-fibers-mimicking-polar-bear-fur/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">synthetic materials</a> designed to imitate it. </p>



<p>This attribute largely comes from skin's ability to redistribute the energy from a puncturing object, thereby minimizing harm to the deeper tissues. The team embarked on a journey to decipher the secret of skin's remarkable resilience.</p>



<p>"You’ll find things that puncture across multiple kinds of organisms - vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and fungi - at all scales and different dynamic regimes, so fangs, claws, spines, stingers, and other long, sharp implements," said Professor Philip Anderson, who led the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-dynamics-of-puncture">The dynamics of puncture</h2>



<p>Understanding the dynamics of puncture involves studying a myriad of variables - the speed, shape, and sharpness of the puncturing object, and the properties of the target material.</p>



<p>The team began by observing the basic elements of puncture, using 3D-printed cones of varying shapes and sharpness levels, and silicone gels of different densities. When this groundwork was laid, they advanced their investigation to actual biological materials.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skin-protects-from-puncture-damage">Skin protects from puncture damage </h2>



<p>With a series of experiments, the team examined the "puncturability" of pork slabs with and without skin and compared these with synthetic imitations. The synthetic analogue was a silicone gel approximating the rigidity of animal blubber and a thinner, higher-rigidity gel representing skin.</p>



<p>"Using a combination of dynamic puncture experiments and theoretical modeling, we examined the puncture resistance of both natural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-food-dye-makes-skin-invisible-for-medical-imaging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">skin tissues</a> and synthetic bilayer tissue-mimicking materials," noted Bingyang Zhang, postdoctoral researcher at the<a href="https://illinois.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign</a>.</p>



<p>"We found that, despite its thinness, pig skin attached to underlying tissue reduced damage from puncture by about 60% at slower speeds and 73% at higher speeds compared with the same pig tissue without skin."</p>



<p>In contrast, synthetic skin offered less protection, reducing the damage to the underlying gel by less than 40% at slower speeds and less than 30% at higher speeds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-composition-of-skin">Unique composition of skin</h2>



<p>The researchers hypothesize the superior performance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-craft-living-human-skin-on-a-robotic-finger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural skin</a> could be attributed to its structure being primarily composed of collagen fibers. These fibers are interweaved, offering resistance even when some are broken. </p>



<p>Additionally, the breakage of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-does-skin-become-leathery-after-too-much-uv-light-from-sun-exposure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">collagen fibers</a> dissipates some of the energy from the puncturing object, thus slowing it down and reducing its capacity to penetrate deeper into the tissue. Synthetic materials lack this crucial trait.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-skin-redistributes-force">Skin redistributes force</h2>



<p>The study showed that our skin is not just our body's wrapping; it's an active shield that remarkably redistributes force and dissipates energy. </p>



<p>"We also learned a great deal about how synthetic materials, while useful in many scenarios, still fall short in replicating these complex biological functions," said Zhang. </p>



<p>This research shines new light on the wonders of nature and the incredible ways our bodies protect us from harm, even in ways we've never realized. </p>



<p>As scientists continue to uncover these mysteries, we can only marvel at the extraordinary complexity and functionality of such seemingly simple things - like the skin we live in.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-innovations-in-flexibility-and-durability">Innovations in flexibility and durability </h2>



<p>The insights from this study have potential applications far beyond understanding natural defenses. </p>



<p>Medical devices, wound dressings, and protective equipment could all benefit from mimicking the puncture-resistant properties of skin. </p>



<p>By incorporating collagen-like fibers or designing materials that can distribute puncture energy, manufacturers may enhance the safety and durability of products like surgical gloves, body armor, or even artificial skin grafts. </p>



<p>This knowledge could ultimately inspire innovations in fields where both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-skin-is-the-perfect-balance-of-flexibility-and-durability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flexibility and durability</a> are essential, bringing human-made materials a step closer to the natural efficiency seen in skin.</p>

<p>Imagine a world where it's possible to break free from the chains of addiction with the help of a simple, 30-minute procedure that harnesses the power of ultrasound. </p>



<p>A team of researchers from the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI) at <a href="https://online.wvu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">West Virginia University</a> are striving to turn this vision into a reality. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zapping-the-brain-with-ultrasound-waves">Zapping the brain with ultrasound waves</h2>



<p>The experts have been working on a helmet-like device that employs the power of high-frequency <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ultrasound-waves-can-enhance-mindfulness-and-brain-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultrasound waves</a>. The primary target? A region nestled deep inside our brains known as the nucleus accumbens.</p>



<p>This brain region is responsible for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-the-brain-identify-rewards-and-punishments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reward</a> and motivation, and is an area of focus for individuals who are battling addiction. </p>



<p>The new treatment aims to vibrate cell membranes in the nucleus accumbens, disrupting the addictive reward system that is prevalent in all types of substance misuse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ultrasound-therapy-and-drug-addiction">Ultrasound therapy and drug addiction</h2>



<p>The innovative ultrasound approach was recently tested on a volunteer who had struggled with addiction to heroin and methamphetamine for over two decades.</p>



<p>During the procedure, the participant was exposed to images of heroin being cooked while his brain was bathed in ultrasound waves. </p>



<p>After the procedure, the volunteer told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that his cravings for the drugs were gone and he felt nothing about the substances since the treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-the-underlying-causes-of-addiction">Addressing the underlying causes of addiction </h2>



<p>However, the researchers at RNI are quick to acknowledge that this is not an instant fix-all. The underlying causes of addiction, which can range from stress to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/child-maltreatment-triples-the-risk-of-substance-use/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotional trauma</a>, still need to be addressed through adequate coping mechanisms.</p>



<p>"If you take away the craving, but you don't remove the stressors and you don't replace the craving with more adaptive coping mechanisms, eventually you're going to revert back," Dr. James Mahoney told the Wall Street Journal.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-results-spark-further-trials">Early results spark further trials</h2>



<p>Nevertheless, the progress thus far is incredibly encouraging, showing strong potential to make a significant impact on addiction treatment.</p>



<p>The procedure has been tested on two other patients as well, and the results were successful. Future trials are planned in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and the University of Maryland.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-hope-in-the-fight-against-addiction">New hope in the fight against addiction</h2>



<p>The world is grappling with the harsh repercussions of addiction, with drug overdoses accounting for more than 100,000 deaths annually. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, an estimated 2.7 million people aged 12 and older are combating an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-discovery-offers-hope-for-tackling-opioid-addiction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">opioid addiction</a>. Furthermore, around 28.9 million Americans battle alcohol abuse.</p>



<p>Current treatment modalities can only do so much, as they primarily revolve around medications that suppress the euphoric feelings linked to opioids or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcohol-use-affects-the-brains-immune-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alcohol use</a>.</p>



<p>The potential for this pioneering procedure is immense. By targeting the physical parts of the brain associated with addiction, this new approach to combating addiction could become far more effective and efficient in the future.</p>



<p>It is very hopeful that the collective efforts of RNI and its partners will soon bear fruit for the millions trapped in the vicious cycle of addiction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-the-root-of-addiction">Targeting the root of addiction </h2>



<p>As the RNI team continues to explore the effects of ultrasound therapy, their focus remains on creating a solution tailored to the complex needs of people who are battling addiction.</p>



<p>Traditional methods, which often rely on medications to suppress cravings, aren’t effective for everyone. </p>



<p>Many people struggle to find lasting relief because these treatments address symptoms rather than directly targeting the root brain pathways involved in addiction. With ultrasound therapy, RNI researchers aim to change that. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disrupting-the-brain-s-reward-circuit">Disrupting the brain's reward circuit </h2>



<p>By using high-frequency waves to interact with the nucleus accumbens, the therapy disrupts the brain’s reward circuit, which is where cravings are reinforced.</p>



<p>This physical approach allows patients to experience a more immediate shift in how their brains respond to addictive triggers.</p>



<p>The goal isn’t just to suppress cravings but to offer a foundation for recovery that feels manageable. </p>



<p>As the experts at RNI continue with further trials, they are optimistic that ultrasound therapy could be a game-changer.</p>



<p>When paired with personalized coping strategies, ultrasound treatment could potentially empower individuals to regain control over their lives and look forward to a future without addiction.</p>

<p>This area is significant not only for its biodiversity but because it represents the most southern range of the eastern chimpanzee, an endangered subspecies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-estimating-chimpanzee-population-density-nbsp">Estimating chimpanzee population density&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Chimpanzees, along with <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/chimpanzees-vs-bonobos-whats-the-difference/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bonobos</a>, are humans' closest living relatives. While the Greater Mahale Ecosystem is vast, covering nearly 20,000 square kilometers, there has been limited research on chimpanzee populations across the whole park.</p>



<p>“There have been estimates based on small-scale or localized surveys, but no comprehensive baseline data. And without that data, it is difficult to understand chimpanzee population patterns and develop good conservation strategies. My goal was to fill that gap,” Chitayat said.</p>



<p>Chimpanzees build new nests each night, rarely reusing them, which makes nest counting a reliable method for estimating population density.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Chitayat conducted these counts park-wide, determining density figures between 1.1 and 3.7 chimpanzees per square kilometer, depending on the specific habitat characteristics in each area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecosystems-threatened-by-climate-change">Ecosystems threatened by climate change</h2>



<p>The Mahale Mountains feature diverse landscapes, from dense forests to expansive savannahs. Chitayat observed that chimpanzees occupy all these habitats, even the open vegetation, rather than sticking solely to forested areas. This discovery is crucial as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/great-apes-will-suffer-through-frequent-and-extreme-climate-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> threatens these ecosystems. </p>



<p>“By looking at how the chimpanzees use the landscape and move within it, we can conclude that not only the densely forested areas are important for the protection of the animals,” said Chitayat.</p>



<p>Protecting this wide range of habitats, including establishing corridors, could support long-term population health and resilience.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-chimpanzees-with-acoustic-detection">Monitoring chimpanzees with acoustic detection</h2>



<p>Traditional nest counting, while effective, is labor-intensive and costly. Recognizing the limitations, Chitayat developed a new monitoring approach: a deep learning-based acoustic detector.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This technology uses passive acoustic monitoring to capture ambient sounds, including the calls of unhabituated chimpanzees that are difficult to observe up close.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Passive acoustic monitoring is a revolutionary technique that automatically records all the sounds in the vicinity of the acoustic device, including the sounds of chimpanzees. It can be used to find out where the chimpanzees are, how often, at what times, and how many individuals,” said Chitayat.</p>



<p>“The problem is that you have hours, days, even weeks of sound recordings that are far too laborious to listen to manually.”</p>



<p>Fortunately, her <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-learning-can-help-track-changes-in-forest-cover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deep learning</a> algorithm is able to automate the identification of chimpanzee sounds, saving time and resources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-chimpanzee-communication">Understanding chimpanzee communication</h2>



<p>Creating the acoustic detector presented unique challenges. Chimpanzees <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-have-a-much-more-complex-language-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">communicate</a> through a complex range of sounds, from loud, long-distance “pant-hoots” to softer grunts. </p>



<p>Chitayat focused her detector on pant-hoots, which are vital for group cohesion and individual identification but difficult to interpret due to their variability.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Developing the detector to recognize these calls required extensive training data and sophisticated algorithm design, marking a substantial achievement in bioacoustic technology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-chimpanzee-conservation">Future of chimpanzee conservation</h2>



<p>Chitayat’s work opens important doors for future innovations. She envisions refining the acoustic detector to distinguish <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-mean-chimpanzees-fare-better-in-life-than-nice-ones/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">individual</a> chimpanzees, offering insights into group demographics, social dynamics, and age and sex distributions. </p>



<p>Such data would be invaluable for shaping targeted conservation strategies that address specific population needs. “The more we learn, the better we can protect chimpanzees,” said Chitayat.</p>



<p>This technology could enhance our understanding of not just population size but also the social structure and health of groups over time.</p>

<p>As people grow older, common expectations include gray hair, wrinkles, and increased forgetfulness. A new study from Penn State College of Nursing highlights that whether these changes are viewed positively or negatively can influence how individuals perceive their cognitive abilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-positive-attitudes-and-cognitive-self-perception">Positive attitudes and cognitive self-perception</h2>



<p>The research found that people with a more positive outlook on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-reversed-aging-in-mice-by-decades/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging</a> were less likely to report difficulties in cognitive functions, such as trouble focusing or keeping track of tasks. They also tended to perceive less cognitive decline over time. </p>



<p>The findings, published in <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13607863.2024.2399080" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Aging &amp; Mental Health </em></a>, highlight the potential influence of aging expectations on cognitive self-assessment.</p>



<p>“Aging expectations are malleable and influence an individual’s perceptions of their cognitive functioning,” said study first author Nikki Hill, an associate professor at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a>’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing. </p>



<p>Hill noted that promoting more realistic and positive aging expectations could encourage healthier cognitive aging by fostering better awareness and accurate assumptions about the aging process.</p>

<p>Hill’s work focuses on understanding how older adults experience cognitive changes and whether these experiences are affected by their beliefs about aging. This particular relationship has not been extensively studied.</p>



<p>“Do people's perceptions of what they expect aging to be in the future affect the way that they perceive their cognitive performance?” Hill asked.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Understanding this link can provide researchers with better insight into interpreting self-reported cognitive issues and developing strategies to support improved aging outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-worrying-about-cognitive-decline">Worrying about cognitive decline</h2>



<p>Hill pointed out that concern about perceived cognitive decline can increase the risk of future impairment, even if an individual’s cognitive health is currently normal.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This is particularly pertinent in the context of conditions like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alzheimers-may-not-be-brain-disorder-important-data-was-fabricated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alzheimer’s disease</a>, which progress gradually over decades and often include subtle, early symptoms that go unnoticed until significant decline occurs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research">Focus of the research</h2>



<p>The study was conducted through an online survey of 581 Americans aged 65 and older who were living independently without any diagnoses of dementia or notable cognitive impairments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Among the participants, 51% were women, and 74% identified as non-Hispanic white. The survey asked respondents to evaluate their expectations for their physical, mental, and cognitive health as they aged.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Statements such as “every year that people age, their energy levels go down a little more” were rated on a scale from “definitely true” to “definitely false.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Participants were also asked to reflect on their cognitive performance over the past week and compare their current abilities to those from a decade prior to assess perceived decline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings-and-broader-implications">Key findings and broader implications</h2>



<p>The results revealed that participants who maintained positive aging expectations were more likely to rate their cognitive function as better and report less perceived decline in both the short and long term.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In contrast, those with negative expectations were more prone to report cognitive difficulties and a greater sense of decline.</p>



<p>An interesting discovery was that expectations about physical, mental, and cognitive health all had a similar impact on how individuals rated their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/video-games-can-rewind-the-clock-on-cognitive-performance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive performance</a>. </p>



<p>This suggested that general attitudes toward aging play a significant role in shaping self-perceptions of cognitive health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beliefs-about-aging-and-cognitive-health">Beliefs about aging and cognitive health</h2>



<p>“If we can intervene in a way to ground aging expectations more in what is true and less stigmatized, then maybe we can help people clarify what they're experiencing in terms of cognitive changes,” Hill said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Such interventions could pave the way for tailored support and better strategies to maximize cognitive health.</p>



<p>The research team plans to delve deeper into understanding the intricate relationship between beliefs about aging and how older adults report cognitive changes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, they aim to explore how these beliefs influence interactions with healthcare providers during discussions about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mind-diet-may-protect-cognitive-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive health</a>. By doing so, they hope to uncover effective ways to support older adults and address their cognitive health needs proactively.</p>

<p>Bats navigate effortlessly over vast distances using their natural GPS - echolocation. A recent study published in the journal <em>Science</em> has provided new insights into the extraordinary navigational capabilities of bats, and these abilities are more fascinating than we realized.</p>



<p>Echolocation - a technique not disrupted by darkness - is used by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/over-half-of-north-american-bats-face-extinction-risk-in-15-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a> to avoid obstacles and orient themselves in the vastness of their environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-dimension-of-bat-navigation">A new dimension of bat navigation </h2>



<p>By bouncing sound waves off objects and listening to the echoes, these nocturnal creatures can skillfully navigate their surroundings. Now, a new dimension has been added to their echolocating prowess. </p>



<p>The research was led by Iain Couzin’s group at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the Cluster of Excellence Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour at the <a href="https://www.uni-konstanz.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Konstanz</a>.</p>



<p>Through experiments, the experts found that bats can recognize their location even after displacement and utilize echolocation for map-based navigation over long distances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-a-bat-s-journey-home">Tracking a bat's journey home</h2>



<p>In Israel's Hula Valley, a bat species named Kuhl’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhlii), weighing only six grams, was put to the test.</p>



<p>Across a few nights, 76 bats were relocated to various spots within a three-kilometer radius of their home. Each bat was equipped with an innovative lightweight reverse GPS tracking system, ATLAS, which offered high-resolution, real-time tracking.</p>



<p>Interestingly, even when solely dependent on echolocation, 95 percent of the bats found their way back home within mere minutes, demonstrating that bats are capable of navigating long distances using their localized, highly directional mode of sensing. </p>



<p>The researchers discovered that bats also employ vision, if available, for enhanced navigation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-of-bat-navigation">Science of bat navigation</h2>



<p>To investigate further, the research team generated a detailed map of the entire valley.</p>



<p>"We wanted to visualize what each bat experienced during flight and understand how they used acoustic information to navigate," explained Xing Chen, an expert in the School of Zoology at <a href="https://english.tau.ac.il" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tel Aviv University</a>, who was responsible for developing the valley’s reconstruction.</p>



<p>The model revealed that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-bat-appreciation-day-the-crucial-role-of-bats-in-nature/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bats</a> have a preference for flying near areas with substantial "echoic entropy," or regions that provide rich acoustic information.</p>



<p>The bats, during the localization phase, would meander around until a certain point - after which their flight was directed toward their destination.</p>



<p>This behavior clearly indicates that the bats possess some acoustic mental map of their home range. This allows them to identify distinctive environmental features such as a tree or a road, which they use as acoustic landmarks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-maps-and-memory">Mental maps and memory</h2>



<p>Beyond their acute sensory perceptions, memory plays a crucial role in a bat's ability to navigate efficiently. Researchers suggest that bats, like Kuhl’s pipistrelle, develop and refine a cognitive map of their environment over time. </p>



<p>This mental map is not a static image but a dynamic collection of experiences and stored acoustic information that aids in re-orientation after displacement. </p>



<p>Bats may rely on memory to access familiar routes or locations, integrating both real-time echolocation data and past experiences to optimize their flight paths. </p>



<p>This complex interplay between memory and sensory input enhances their adaptive navigation strategies, enabling them to thrive even in rapidly changing environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>The findings of this study serve as a potential blueprint for developing advanced navigation systems. By understanding how bats combine echolocation with memory to navigate, scientists can draw parallels in designing autonomous vehicles or drones that require minimal visual input. </p>



<p>The high efficiency of bats in interpreting environmental acoustics presents opportunities to innovate and refine sonar-based technologies. </p>



<p>Future research might focus on exploring how bats adapt their echolocation strategies over different terrains or in varying atmospheric conditions, contributing further to our knowledge of sensory integration and its applications in technological advancements. </p>



<p>As our understanding deepens, the biosonar abilities of bats may inspire developments across various fields such as robotics, communication, and environmental monitoring.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-combining-senses-for-navigation">Combining senses for navigation </h2>



<p>Kuhl’s pipistrelles are capable of navigating over several kilometers using echolocation alone, but when vision is accessible, they optimize their navigational efficiency by combining both senses.</p>



<p>After being displaced, they strategize by first identifying their new location and then flying home, using distinctive acoustically marked environmental features as their landmarks.</p>



<p>Drawing parallels from such remarkable findings could enhance human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-bats-can-remember-the-past-and-plan-for-the-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">navigation methods</a>, particularly in situations where traditional GPS systems fail. </p>

<p>We wouldn't think twice about feeling sorry for a child who dropped her ice cream or a dog whimpering at the door. But how about a machine? More specifically, a robot? A recent study examines this less-explored territory of humans showing empathy for a robot in distress.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-feeling-sorry-for-robots">Feeling sorry for robots</h2>



<p>Marieke Wieringa, a researcher at <a href="https://www.ru.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Radboud University</a>, discovered something fascinating. </p>



<p>We humans, it appears, can be rather empathetic to our robotic counterparts. Our hearts can bleed for them, metaphorically speaking of course.</p>



<p>All it seems to take, according to her study, are pitiful sounds, sorrowful digital eyes or a trembling mechanical arm. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-robots-in-distress">Robots in distress</h2>



<p>Now, we all know <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-that-sense-the-world-through-sound-are-more-human-like/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robots</a> don't feel pain. They're not alive. They're just machines composed of wires and metal, computer code and calculations. </p>



<p>Yet, Wieringa's study throws a wrench in that logical perception. It suggests that given the right circumstances, we can be persuaded to believe that a robot could be in distress.</p>



<p>"If a robot can pretend to experience emotional distress, people feel guiltier when they mistreat the robot," Wieringa explains. That's right, pretend distress, induced guilt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-empathy-experiments">Empathy experiments</h2>



<p>Wieringa and her team set up several experiments to examine our responses to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-with-space-to-think-will-become-more-useful/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robot</a> mistreatment. This involved a rather uncomfortable task for the participants. </p>



<p>“Some participants watched videos of robots that were either mistreated or treated well. Sometimes, we asked participants to give the robots a shake themselves," Wierenga noted.</p>



<p>"We tried out all variations: sometimes the robot didn’t respond, sometimes it did -- with pitiful sounds and other responses that we associate with pain."</p>



<p>The results? Participants were more reluctant to shake a robot that reacted with signs of distress, effectively pulling at their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sports-coaches-are-more-effective-when-they-lead-with-empathy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">empathy strings</a>.</p>



<p>“If we asked the participants to shake a robot that showed no emotion, then they didn’t seem to have any difficulty with it at all.” Wieringa added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distressing-robot-noises">Distressing robot noises</h2>



<p>In another experiment, the participants faced a choice. They could either complete a tedious task or shake the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robot-buddies-encourage-children-to-stay-physical-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robot</a>. The catch was if they shook the robot for a longer time, they'd have to do the boring task for less time. </p>



<p>Most preferred to shake a silent robot, but once the robot started making distressing noises, the participants opted for the mundane task instead.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tamagotchi-effect">Tamagotchi effect</h2>



<p>Remember the Tamagotchi? The pocket-sized, electronic pet that took the world by storm in the late 90s? </p>



<p>Wieringa warns of a similar phenomenon. </p>



<p>“People were obsessed with Tamagotchis for a while: virtual pets that successfully <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-feel-empathic-embarrassment-for-humiliated-robots/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">triggered emotions</a>. But what if a company made a new Tamagotchi that you had to pay to feed as a pet?" Wieringa asked. </p>



<p>"That’s why I am calling for governmental regulations that establish when it’s appropriate for chatbots, robots and other variants to be able to express emotions."</p>



<p>The concern is that businesses might exploit our susceptibility to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/digital-deception-how-do-humans-respond-to-lying-robots/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotional manipulation</a>, creating products designed to gain not just our attention but our sympathy and cash too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dilemmas-of-digital-empathy">Dilemmas of digital empathy</h2>



<p>The findings of Wieringa's study open a Pandora's box of ethical questions. </p>



<p>If people can feel genuine empathy towards distressed robots, should robots be programmed with features that trigger such emotions? <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-humans-vs-distressed-robots">Humans vs. distressed robots</h2>



<p>While organizations that attempt to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-decipher-every-possible-facial-expression-outperforming-therapists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exploit our emotions</a> warrant caution, Wieringa and her team also asserts that a complete ban on robotic emotions isn't the answer.</p>

<p>Hidden deep in the frosty expanse of the Greenland Ice Sheet, an intriguing secret has been lurking - a significant amount of meltwater temporarily held within its icy mantle during the summertime.</p>



<p>It's a discovery that not only challenges our existing understanding of ice sheets and their role in sea-level rise but also signals the need for a paradigm shift in climate change models.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-mystery-on-the-greenland-ice-sheet">A mystery on the Greenland ice sheet</h2>



<p>Despite being the largest single contributor to global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cost-coastal-cities-over-1-trillion-in-damages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea-level rise</a>, scientists have so far been unable to answer how the storage of meltwater within the Greenland Ice Sheet evolves throughout the summer melt season. </p>

The research was led by Jiangjun Ran, a professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the <a href="https://www.sustech.edu.cn/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southern University of Science and Technology</a> in China.</p>



<p>"During the melt season, we found that a significant fraction of meltwater mass is stored temporarily within the ice sheet. This water buffering effect peaks in July and slowly recedes in the following weeks," noted Professor Ran.</p>

The network consists of tens of stations around Greenland, providing continuous positioning data. </p>



<p>The data was used to develop a method capable of interpreting the detected vertical displacements of the bedrock caused, among other things, by the mass of melting water.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
