<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-affect-health">How flavor and smell affect health</h2>



<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>The vast, captivating expanses of the Pacific Ocean are dotted with small but vibrant island nations like Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji.  Over the next 30 years, these Pacific islands will confront no less than 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) of sea level rise, warn scientists from NASA's sea level change science team.</p>



<p>Alarmingly, this level of rise appears to be inevitable and irreversible, even if our greenhouse gas emissions fluctuate in the coming years.</p>



<p>These tropical paradises, home to millions of people, are rapidly being reshaped by the relentless tide of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pacific-sea-levels-are-rising-faster-than-anywhere-in-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human-caused climate change</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-outsmarting-the-tides">Outsmarting the tides</h2>



<p>This sobering analysis of Pacific island sea level rise wasn't undertaken on a whim. It's a direct response from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s sea level change team working hand in hand with the U.S. Department of State at the behest of several Pacific Island nations, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-sea-levels-tuvalu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tuvalu</a> and Kiribati.</p>



<p>And the result? High-resolution maps that depict the potentially devastating high-tide flooding -- or 'nuisance flooding' as it's often called -- that these islands could be grappling with by the 2050s.</p>



<p>Launched on Sept. 23, these maps present a chilling glimpse of what the future could look like under different emissions scenarios, ranging from the best-case scenario, to business-as-usual, right up to worst-case.</p>



<p>“Sea level will continue to rise for centuries, causing more frequent flooding,” said Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer, who directs ocean physics programs for NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth Science Division</a>. </p>



<p>“NASA’s new flood tool tells you what the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pacific-sea-levels-are-rising-faster-than-anywhere-in-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential increase in flooding frequency and severity</a> look like in the next decades for the coastal communities of the Pacific Island nations.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-sea-level-rise-in-pacific">Mapping sea level rise in Pacific</h2>



<p>The mapping project, spearheaded by researchers at the University of Hawaii and in partnership with scientists at the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado</a> and <a href="https://www.vt.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virginia Tech</a>, initially focused on Kiribati, Tuvalu, Fiji, Nauru, and Niue. </p>



<p>These maps should aid Pacific Island nations in deciding where to channel their mitigation efforts.</p>



<p>Grace Malie, a youth leader from Tuvalu and part of the <a href="https://sdgs.un.org/partnerships/rising-nations-initiative" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rising Nations Initiative</a> -- a United Nations-backed program -- emphasized the role of scientific data in effectively communicating accurate sea level rise projections.</p>



<p>This information, she stated, could also bolster early warning systems, a primary focus for their country at present.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-future-floods">Predicting future floods</h2>



<p>In an unsettling revelation, the sea level change team noted that nearly all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pacific-ocean-temperatures-highest-in-650-years-greatly-harming-coral-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pacific</a> Island nations will witness an increase in the number of high-tide flooding days each year by the 2050s. </p>



<p>For example, areas of Tuvalu that currently experience less than five high-tide flood days a year could see a staggering average of 25 flood days annually by the 2050s. </p>



<p>Similarly, regions of Kiribati currently seeing fewer than five flood days a year today, could be facing an average of 65 flood days annually by the same timeline.</p>



<p>“Everyone (in Tuvalu) lives by the coast or along the coastline, so everyone gets heavily affected by this,” said Malie, stating emphatically, “I am living the reality of climate change.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciphering-pacific-sea-level-rise">Deciphering Pacific sea level rise</h2>



<p>Despite sharing the same <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-discovery-deep-ocean-no-photosynthesis-baffles-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean</a>, sea level rise doesn't impact all regions in the same way. </p>



<p>The myriad factors at play here, like the coastline topography or how glacial meltwater disperses in the ocean, dictate the extent of sea level rise in a particular region.</p>



<p>“We’re always focused on the differences in sea level rise from one region to another, but in the Pacific, the numbers are surprisingly consistent,” said Ben Hamlington, a sea level researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>) in Southern California and the agency’s sea level change science team lead.</p>



<p>The consequences of an 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) sea level rise wouldn't be uniform for all nations. </p>



<p>While for some, this could mean sporadic nuisance flooding at their airport, others might find their neighborhoods submerged for nearly half the year. Hamlington further highlighted the need for more comprehensive data. </p>



<p>A combination of satellite data on ocean levels, ground-based measurements of sea levels at specific points, and improved land elevation information could yield more precise sea level rise projections.</p>



<p>But, as Hamlington pointed out, there is a “real lack of on-the-ground data in these countries.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pacific-islands-sea-level-rise-and-climate-change">Pacific islands, sea level rise and climate change</h2>



<p>“The future of the young people of Tuvalu is already at stake,” declared Malie, mirroring the urgency and apprehension of millions who call these Pacific Island nations home. She stressed that climate change was not just an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/us-added-over-one-million-square-kilometers-to-its-territory-ecs-unclos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental crisis</a>. </p>



<p>It's a matter of justice, survival, and global responsibility. The future, it appears, has indeed arrived at the shores of these Pacific Island nations. But the question is, are we ready to face it?</p>

<p>Do you ever wonder if where you live impacts your health? Well, you might be onto something. New research has opened a new chapter in the rural-urban health divide saga. </p>



<p>The studies rolling off their desks portray a rather disconcerting picture: rural men are living shorter lives and spending fewer of their twilight years in good health compared to their urban counterparts. Why is this so? </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-in-rural-and-urban-areas">Health in rural and urban areas</h2>



<p>Rural areas, often romanticized as idyllic havens of tranquility, are in fact battlegrounds where lifestyle habits wage war on human health daily.</p>



<p>Among rural men, the troika of smoking, obesity, and cardiovascular conditions have insidiously woven themselves into the fabric of life. </p>



<p>This deadly cocktail is fueling the rural-urban divide in illness. As our calendars keep flipping, this gap in health disparity widens. Spoiler alert: when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mens-brains-shrink-in-the-evening-and-reset-overnight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rural men</a> hit sixty, the game is almost over.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-demand-dwindling-supply">Rising demand, dwindling supply</h2>



<p>As if the above predicaments weren't enough, rural areas face an increasingly uphill battle when it comes to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mind-diet-may-protect-cognitive-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healthcare</a>. </p>



<p>With a higher demand for care and dwindling provider numbers, the future seems bleak. Rural areas are aging faster, largely because the younger folk are packing their bags and heading to the cities. </p>



<p>This mass exodus further shrinks the supply of potential caregivers, posing quite a challenge for rural communities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rural-health-crisis">Rural health crisis</h2>



<p>"Rural populations face a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, which has serious implications for healthy aging," said lead author<a href="https://healthpolicy.usc.edu/author/jack-m-chapel/"> Jack Chapel</a>, a postdoctoral scholar at the <a href="https://healthpolicy.usc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USC Schaeffer Center</a> for Health Policy &amp; Economics.</p>



<p>"With an aging population and fewer physicians available, the burden on rural communities is set to grow, leading to significant challenges in providing care for those who will face more health issues in the future."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-quality-for-rural-men">Health quality for rural men</h2>



<p>The researchers used data from the Health and Retirement Survey and a prediction tool known as the Future Elderly Model. </p>



<p>The goal? To anticipate future life expectancy and health quality for rural and urban Americans after age 60. </p>



<p>They compared health trajectories for Americans who turned 60 between 2014-2020 and those who hit the mark between 1994-2000.</p>



<p>Their results? Quite startling. The disparity between rural and urban men has tripled in the last two decades. Presently, rural men can expect to live about two years less than their urban peers. </p>



<p>What's more, they suffer from quality health for 1.8 fewer years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-rural-health-gap">Urban-rural health gap</h2>



<p>About ten years ago, a game-changing study revealed that people with lower education levels are more prone to "deaths of despair" -- think drug overdoses or suicide.</p>



<p>This new study shows that although education is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fathers-diets-impact-the-heart-health-of-their-daughters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">critical factor in health quality</a>, it doesn't fully explain the urban-rural gap. </p>



<p>When the researchers adjusted rural education levels to match their urban counterparts, they did see a reduction in the healthy life expectancy gap. But it was far from a perfect solution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interventions-to-bridge-the-gap">Interventions to bridge the gap</h2>



<p>So, what can be done? Researchers suggest interventions focusing on smoking reduction, obesity management, and cardiovascular disease treatment and control. </p>



<p>But it's easier said than done. Even the most effective interventions couldn't completely bridge the rural-urban divide in healthy life expectancy.</p>



<p>Co-author<a href="https://healthpolicy.usc.edu/author/elizabeth-currid-halkett-phd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Elizabeth Currid-Halkett</a> is the James Irvine Chair in Urban and Regional Planning and a senior scholar at the USC Schaeffer Institute for Public Policy &amp; Government Service.</p>



<p>“While education matters, so does smoking, prevalent obesity, cardiovascular conditions – and simply living in a rural area -- which leads not only to more deaths but more illness among rural American men,” Currid-Halkett explained.</p>



<p>“Closing the gap in healthy life expectancy between urban and rural areas for older adults would require encouraging health behavior changes earlier in life and making broader social and economic improvements in rural areas,” said co-author<a href="https://healthpolicy.usc.edu/author/bryan-tysinger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;Bryan Tysinger</a>, director of health policy simulation at the Schaeffer Center.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-big-picture">The big picture</h2>



<p>There's no easy way to put this: the health of rural men is in crisis. This glaring reality underscores the need for urgent, comprehensive, and multi-faceted <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/men-could-face-an-84-increase-in-cancer-cases-by-2050/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interventions</a>. </p>



<p>While progress might be slow and the challenge seems daunting, remember that every life improved is worth the effort. After all, health shouldn't be a luxury determined by your zip code.</p>

<p>The ocean, one of Earth's greatest mysteries, is a vast, deep and untapped reservoir of complexity. But there's one part of it that's shrouded in more secrecy and darkness than the rest - the ocean's twilight zone. </p>



<p>Recent research has revealed some new details about this unknown territory. It turns out, the twilight zone is running on an iron deficiency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-s-twilight-zone">Ocean's twilight zone</h2>



<p>The twilight zone lies dwarfed in darkness 200 to 1,000 meters below the sea surface. This is an area where no sunlight dares to penetrate, and a place that is grappling with an iron famine.</p>



<p>Why is this important? Because iron is a key micronutrient, the absence of which hampers bacterial growth. So, what do these bacteria do when the iron is so sparse? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-microbes-eat-a-different-diet-that-affects-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">They adapt, of course</a>. </p>



<p>In response to the iron shortage, bacteria produce molecules known as siderophores, which help them snatch every iota of iron they can from the surrounding seawater.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iron-deficiency-in-the-twilight-zone">Iron deficiency in the twilight zone</h2>



<p>The study findings could usher in a dramatic change in the way we perceive microbial processes in the deep ocean. Moreover, the research could open up new avenues of understanding about the ocean's ability to absorb carbon.</p>



<p>Study co-author Tim Conway is an associate professor of chemical oceanography at the USF College of Marine Science.</p>



<p>“Understanding the organisms that facilitate carbon uptake in the ocean is important for understanding the impacts of climate change,” said Conway.</p>



<p>“When organic matter from the surface ocean descends to the deep ocean, it acts as a biological pump that removes carbon from the atmosphere and stores it in seawater and sediments."</p>



<p>"Measuring the rates and processes that influence this pump gives us insight into how and where the ocean stores carbon.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-twilight-zone-water-samples">Twilight zone water samples</h2>



<p>The researchers collected water samples from the top 1,000 meters of the water column across the eastern Pacific Ocean from Alaska to Tahiti. The samples revealed something unexpected.</p>



<p>Concentrations of siderophores were not just high in the surface waters, where an iron deficiency would make sense, but also in waters between 200 and 400 meters deep. This was a perplexing discovery as it was believed that nutrient and iron levels at these depths would not affect bacterial growth.</p>



<p>“Unlike in surface waters, we did not expect to find siderophores in the ocean’s twilight zone,” said Conway. </p>



<p>“Our study shows that iron-deficiency is high for bacteria living in this region throughout much of the east Pacific Ocean, and that the bacteria use siderophores to increase their uptake of iron."</p>



<p>"This has a knock-on effect on the biological carbon pump, because these bacteria are responsible for the breakdown of organic matter as it sinks through the twilight zone.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>The research was part of an international effort known as GEOTRACES, aimed at understanding climate-driven changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-ocean-day-a-unified-approach-to-protect-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean biogeochemistry</a>. Despite these discoveries, we're just scratching the surface when it comes to understanding siderophores.</p>



<p>“For a full picture of how nutrients shape marine biogeochemical cycles, future studies will need to take these findings into account,” said study co-author Daniel Repeta, senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.</p>



<p>“In other words, experiments near the surface must expand to include the twilight zone.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-siderophores">Role of siderophores</h2>



<p>While the discovery of siderophores in the twilight zone might seem like esoteric scientific trivia, it carries significant implications for marine ecology. </p>



<p>These biochemical agents showcase an incredible adaptability within microbial life forms that are key players in oceanic nutrient cycles. By enhancing iron acquisition, siderophores not only support bacterial survival but also enable more efficient organic matter decomposition. </p>



<p>This process is crucial as it influences the sequestration of carbon in the ocean depths, thereby playing an essential role in regulating the global climate. </p>



<p>As we unearth more about the twilight zone's unique conditions, it becomes clear that its invisible operations are instrumental in sustaining the balance of marine ecosystems and Earth's climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study">Broader implications of the study </h2>



<p>The findings from the study are not just pivotal for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ringwoodite-mineral-confirms-vast-ocean-exists-400-miles-under-earths-crust/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oceanography and marine biology</a>, but they also resonate across the broader context of environmental science. </p>

<p>Using state-of-the-art drone technology, scientists have managed to get an intimate look at the intriguing underwater foraging behavior of gray whales off the Oregon coast.</p>



<p>Clara Bird, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.oregonstate.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon State University</a>, has spent seven years compiling this drone footage.</p>



<p>In doing so, she's managed to quantify the gray whales’ behavior, as well as their individual size and body condition. It turns out that age plays a significant role in the way <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flexible-diets-are-key-to-killer-whale-survival/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a> behave while foraging.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-the-whale-dynamics">Exploring the whale dynamics</h2>



<p>Bird observed that younger, smaller whales tend to swim forward while foraging, while their older, larger counterparts display a unique behavior: headstanding. </p>



<p>Wondering what that is? It's when a whale, head-down, pushes its mouth into the ocean floor, almost like it's doing a handstand. As odd as it may seem to us, it seems to be a part of the whales' growing process.</p>

<p>“Our findings suggest that this headstanding behavior requires strength and coordination," explained Bird, who is a part of the <a href="https://mmi.oregonstate.edu/gemm-lab" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geospatial Ecology of Marine Megafauna Laboratory</a>.</p>



<p>"For example, we often see whales sculling much like synchronized swimmers do while they are headstanding. It is likely this behavior is learned by the whales as they mature. We have footage of whale calves trying to copy this behavior and they’re not able to do it successfully.”</p>



<p>Could you imagine, baby <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gray-whales-in-the-north-pacific-are-shrinking-in-size/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales</a> trying to emulate their elders, attempting (and failing) at their first headstands? It's a glimpse into the intriguing world of whales growing up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-whales-foraging-tactics">Whales foraging tactics</h2>



<p>The recent findings of Bird and her co-author, Associate Professor Leigh Torres from <a href="https://mmi.oregonstate.edu/gemm-lab" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GEMM Lab</a> at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, reveal a lot more about these marine giants. Whales modify their foraging tactics based on their surroundings. </p>



<p>For example, it appears they tend to headstand more while on a reef. This makes sense, considering the mysid shrimp, a favorite meal for whales, tend to congregate around reef areas filled with kelp.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-art-of-bubble-blasts">Art of "bubble blasts"</h2>



<p>Another <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/add-humpback-whales-to-list-of-animals-that-build-and-use-tools/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fascinating behavior</a> noted in the study is the so-called "bubble blasts". This is a single large exhale by a whale underwater resulting in a mesmerizing circular pattern at the surface. </p>



<p>While it might have seemed like a playful act, it turns out to have a functional purpose.</p>

<p>“While it was thought that bubble blasts helped gray whales aggregate or capture prey, our study shows that bubble blasts are a behavioral adaptation used by the whales to regulate their buoyancy while feeding in very shallow water,” Torres explained.</p>



<p>It seems that larger, fatter whales are more likely to employ bubble blasts, particularly while performing headstands. This behavior aids in longer underwater dives, thus enabling prolonged feeding sessions.</p>

<p>By studying gray whales, Bird and her team have managed to bridge the gap between human understanding and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bowhead-whales-dive-synchrony-separated-by-distances-over-60-miles-chaos-theory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whales' behavioral patterns</a>.</p>



<p>“Because these whales are feeding close to shore, where the water is shallow and we can capture their behavior on video, we’re able to really see what is happening,” Bird said. “To be able to study the whales, in our backyard, and fill in some answers to questions about their behavior, feels very special.”</p>



<p>Through these insights, we're not only learning more about these awe-inspiring marine animals but also how to better protect them.</p>

Highlights of the most detailed infrared map of the Milky Way

<p>For more than a decade, astronomers from around the globe have been studying our Milky Way galaxy to learn more about Earth's place in the vast universe. Now, they've hit a benchmark achievement -- an intricate infrared map of the Milky Way, showcasing over 1.5 billion celestial bodies. </p>



<p>This is the most detailed map of its kind, pulling back the cosmic veil to reveal structures and stars previously concealed by interstellar dust and gas.</p>



<p>This endeavor was helmed by Dante Minniti, an astrophysicist at <a href="https://www.unab.cl/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universidad Andrés Bello</a> in Chile. </p>



<p>“We made so many discoveries, we have changed the view of our Galaxy forever,” said Minniti, underscoring this research's transformative potency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unmasking-the-universe-the-role-of-infrared">Unmasking the Universe: The Role of Infrared</h2>



<p>The European Southern Observatory's (ESO) <a href="http://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/surveytelescopes/vista/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VISTA telescope</a>, a jewel in the crown at Chile’s Paranal Observatory, has played a crucial role in this venture. </p>



<p>Over 13 years, it has compiled a whopping 200,000 images of our galaxy. </p>

<p>With the exception of Messier 22 -- a densely packed cluster of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/runaway-star-j1249-36-spotted-trying-to-escape-our-milky-way-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient stars</a> -- these celestial objects are stellar nurseries, composed of gas and dust where new stars are born.</p>



<p>The key to its success? An infrared camera, <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/surveytelescopes/vista/camera/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VIRCAM</a>, that can see through the dense dust and gas that usually obscures our view of the Milky Way.</p>



<p>Infrared light unveils otherwise invisible sights -- stars that are too cool or faint to be seen, new stars in their dusty nurseries, ancient star clusters, elusive "failed" stars known as brown dwarfs, and even free-floating planets without a sun.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-billions-of-celestial-objects">Billions of celestial objects</h2>



<p>The data collected in this project is staggering -- 500 terabytes, making it the largest observational project with an ESO telescope so far. </p>



<p>In simpler terms? This map spans the sky's area equivalent to 8,600 full moons and catalogs ten times more objects than the team's prior 2012 map.</p>



<p>Roberto Saito is an astrophysicist from <a href="https://ufsc.br/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina</a> in Brazil. </p>



<p>He emphasized the team effort behind the colossal project, saying, "The project was a monumental effort, made possible because we were surrounded by a great team.”</p>

<p>Tracking these speedsters gives crucial insights into the gravitational forces at play in the Milky Way's core and the events that can catapult stars across immense distances.</p>



<p>The successful completion of these surveys marks not an end, but a beginning. The data will serve as a treasure trove for astronomers for decades to come. </p>



<p>Plus, Paranal Observatory is ramping up for its next stage of exploration. Both the VISTA and ESO’s Very Large Telescope (<a href="https://www.eso.org/public/teles-instr/paranal-observatory/vlt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VLT</a>) are scheduled for instrument upgrades, gearing up to make even more detailed observations and open the door for countless new discoveries.</p>

<p>Mars, known as the Red Planet, wasn't always the uninviting desert we see today. There's a lot of concrete evidence suggesting that water flowed freely on this mysterious planet billions of years ago. In the ancient past, the atmosphere of Mars was possibly every bit as ardent and earth-like as the world we live in.</p>



<p>But the question remains - What happened to this planet that it turned into the cold, barren desert we see today?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-mars-missing-atmosphere">Mystery of Mars' missing atmosphere</h2>



<p>One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Mars' 4.6-billion-year history is understanding the fate of its atmosphere.</p>



<p>Once rich with carbon dioxide, it was substantial enough to prevent water from freezing over. But, around 3.5 billion years ago, the water vanished, and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-lost-most-of-its-water-but-where-did-it-go/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere mysteriously thinned out</a>, leaving behind only a wisp of its former self.</p>



<p>Now, two MIT geologists believe they have an intriguing answer to this vexing question - the key to Mars' missing atmosphere could be in the planet's clay-rich crust.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atmosphere-lost-in-mars-crust">Atmosphere lost in Mars' crust</h2>



<p>In a fascinating research paper appearing in the journal <em>Science Advances</em>, the scientists suggest that the Martian clay-crust may be the tomb of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-gravity-map-exposes-ancient-structures-and-volcanic-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet</a>'s lost atmosphere.</p>



<p>The experts argue that as water was present on Mars, it could have seeped through specific rock types, triggering a slow chain of reactions. These reactions drew carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, converting it to methane that could be preserved for ages within the planet's clay surface.</p>



<p>This theoretical conceptualization draws parallels from similar processes happening right here on Earth. Using their knowledge of how rocks and gases interact in terrestrial conditions, the researchers proposed analogous Martian processes. </p>



<p>The implications of their findings are staggering. The experts estimate that Mars' clay could hold up to 1.7 bar of carbon dioxide, equivalent to approximately 80% of Mars' original atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-martian-missions">The future of Martian Missions</h2>



<p>One of the exciting implications of the research is the possibility of using this trapped Martian carbon as propellant for future Mars-Earth missions. Our capacity to harness this buried resource could change the game for interplanetary travel.</p>



<p>Professor Oliver Jagoutz from MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (<a href="https://eaps.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EAPS</a>) co-authored the study alongside recent EAPS graduate Joshua Murray.</p>



<p>Based on their Earth-based findings, the researchers propose that similar processes likely happened on Mars and that substantial amounts of atmospheric CO2 could have transformed into methane and been captured within clays.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-atmosphere-trapped-in-clay">Mars atmosphere trapped in clay</h2>



<p>Professor Jagoutz's team at MIT dedicates their efforts to understanding the geological processes that govern Earth’s lithosphere.</p>



<p>In 2023, the team focused on a type of surface clay mineral called smectite, known as an efficient carbon trap. On Earth, smectite clay helps extract enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to cool the planet over millions of years.</p>



<p>While investigating Mars, Jagoutz noticed that the Martian surface was also blanketed in smectite clays. Could these clays have had a similar effect on Mars? Could they be holding onto Mars' lost carbon?</p>



<p>“We know this process happens, and it is well-documented on Earth. And these rocks and clays exist on Mars,” said Professor Jagoutz. “So, we wanted to try and connect the dots.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-did-these-clays-form-on-mars">How did these clays form on Mars?</h2>



<p>Unlike Earth, where smectite is an outcome of continental plates shifting and uplifting, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-curiosity-rover-makes-surprising-find-under-martian-rock-sulfur-crystals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a> has no similar tectonic activity. </p>



<p>To understand how these clays formed on Mars, the team relied on what is known about the planet's history and composition. Based on observations of Mars' surface and existing knowledge of rock chemistry, they developed a model to explain the formation of Martian clays.</p>



<p>The model hypothesized that over a billion years, as water percolated through the crust filled with carbon dioxide, it reacted with a mineral called olivine abundant in the crust.</p>



<p>This process released hydrogen and formed the red oxidized iron, giving Mars its iconic red hue. The resulting hydrogen combined with the carbon dioxide, forming methane. </p>



<p>As this process continued, olivine transformed into another iron-rich rock known as serpentine, which further reacted with water to form smectite.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-is-mars-missing-atmosphere">Where is Mars' missing atmosphere?</h2>



<p>The team's model suggests that if the Martian surface has a layer of smectite 1,100 meters deep, this much clay could store an enormous amount of methane, equivalent to most of the carbon dioxide thought to have disappeared since planet Mars dried up. </p>



<p>“We find that estimates of global clay volumes on Mars are consistent with a significant fraction of Mars’ initial CO<sub>2</sub> being sequestered as organic compounds within the clay-rich crust,” said Murray. “In some ways, Mars’ missing atmosphere could be hiding in plain sight.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>This research has undoubtedly provided a promising path to solving one of the greatest Martian mysteries.</p>



<p>As we continue to explore Mars, and perhaps even turn it into a launchpad for further space exploration, understanding its geological history becomes ever more crucial. Thanks to scientists like Jagoutz and Murray, we are a step closer to unraveling the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-spiders-recreated-in-nasa-lab-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">secrets of the Red Planet</a>.</p>



<p>The findings promise to impact the future of space exploration, adding yet another exciting chapter to the story of Mars - a planet that continues to fascinate us with its mysteries.</p>

<p>Leading this study was Eleni Stavrinidou, an esteemed associate professor at <a href="https://liu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Linköping University</a> in Sweden. </p>

<p>In hydroponic systems, plants don't need soil to grow. Instead, they are nurtured in nutrient-rich water, with substrates providing the much-needed support.</p>



<p>But what's really eye-catching about hydroponics is its efficiency. </p>



<p>Hydroponic systems consume significantly less water than traditional farming because the water is reused, and each plant gets exactly what it needs -- not an ounce more, not an ounce less.</p>

<p>Now let's talk about eSoil, the secret sauce in Stavrinidou's study. </p>



<p>The pivotal element that sets eSoil apart is its blend of cellulose (the material that constitutes plant cell walls) and a conductive polymer known as PEDOT. </p>

<p>"In this way, we can get seedlings to grow faster with less resources. We don't yet know how it actually works, which biological mechanisms that are involved," Sarvrinidou explains. </p>



<p>"What we have found is that seedlings process nitrogen more effectively, but it's not clear yet how the&nbsp;<a href="https://phys.org/tags/electrical+stimulation/">electrical stimulation</a>&nbsp;impacts this process."</p>



<p>Looking ahead, Stavrinidou acknowledges that hydroponics won't entirely address global food security concerns. "But it can certainly be a lifeline, particularly in areas with limited arable land and harsh environmental conditions," she adds.</p>

<p>Techniques such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmers-adopt-regenerative-agriculture-better-soil-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crop rotation</a>, organic farming, and efficient water management can enhance soil health, conserve precious resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. </p>



<p>Combining all of these methodologies with electric soil and hydroponics will help us reach global food security goals much faster.</p>

While it might sound like something Scotty or the Enterprise crew would marvel at, scientists are making teleportation at the quantum level a scientific fact. </p>



<p>In an important study recently published in the journal <em>Science</em>, Quantinuum announced the first-ever teleportation of a logical qubit using fault-tolerant methods.</p>



<p>Dr. Ciaran Ryan-Anderson, Lead Physicist at <a href="https://www.quantinuum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantinuum</a>, spearheaded this revolutionary research. His expertise in quantum information processing has been pivotal in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-material-chiral-superconductor-shows-great-potential-quantum-computing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computing</a>.</p>

<p>Fidelity, in this context, measures the accuracy of the state <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-quantum-computers-just-got-easier-with-new-technique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">transfer between qubits</a>. To put it simply, this high fidelity indicates that the quantum information was transmitted with remarkable precision.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-logical-qubits-and-quantum-teleportation">Logical qubits and quantum teleportation</h2>



<p>Logical qubits are not your ordinary qubits. Unlike physical qubits, which are susceptible to errors from environmental noise, logical qubits are encoded using <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traditional-computers-verify-errors-made-by-quantum-computers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum error-correcting</a> codes. </p>



<p>This encoding spreads the quantum information across multiple physical qubits, providing a layer of protection against errors. </p>



<p>Quantinuum’s team managed to teleport these logical qubits using up to 30 physical qubits simultaneously, maintaining error correction in real-time throughout the process.</p>



<p>“While it sounds like a gadget from Star Trek, teleportation is real -- and it is happening at Quantinuum,” the company enthused.</p>



<p>This approach offers significant advantages over teleporting physical qubits, making the process more reliable and stable -- key factors for building scalable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/code-breaking-encryption-quantum-computers-takes-big-step-closer-to-becoming-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computers</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-teleportation-techniques">Different teleportation techniques</h2>



<p>The research explored two primary methods for teleporting logical qubits: transversal gates and lattice surgery. Each technique has its unique way of manipulating qubits to achieve the desired state transfer.</p>



<p>Transversal gates involve applying operations to multiple qubits at the same time. This method allows for simultaneous manipulation, which can speed up the teleportation process. </p>



<p>On the other hand, lattice surgery is a technique that manipulates <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diamonds-bring-quantum-networks-one-step-closer-to-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">qubit boundaries</a> to perform operations. </p>



<p>This localized approach can be more compatible with certain hardware architectures, such as superconducting circuits.</p>



<p>Quantinuum’s experiments revealed that while both methods are effective, they come with their own set of challenges. </p>



<p>For instance, the lattice surgery method had a slightly lower fidelity of 85.1% compared to the 97.5% achieved with transversal gates. </p>



<p>This difference is attributed to the increased gate count and memory errors inherent in the lattice surgery approach.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-trapped-ion-processors">The power of trapped-ion processors</h2>



<p>At the heart of these experiments is Quantinuum’s H2 trapped-ion quantum processor. Trapped-ion technology is renowned for its flexibility and precise control over qubits, which is essential for implementing complex error correction routines. </p>



<p>The H2 processor’s architecture allows for all-to-all connectivity, meaning any qubit can interact with any other qubit without delay. This feature is crucial for maintaining fault tolerance during the teleportation process.</p>



<p>The team utilized real-time decoding to apply error corrections at four stages of the teleportation protocol, including mid-circuit measurements. </p>



<p>As the researchers proudly state, “This is the first demonstration of a fully fault-tolerant version of the state teleportation circuit using real-time quantum error correction (QEC).”</p>

<p>These networks could enable secure data transfer over long distances, a critical requirement for applications in cryptography and beyond.</p>



<p>Moreover, the ability to teleport logical qubits reliably is a cornerstone for developing scalable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-wobble-how-scientists-manipulated-the-nucleus-of-a-single-titanium-atom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computing systems</a>. </p>



<p>Error correction is one of the biggest hurdles in quantum computing, and this research demonstrates that it’s possible to maintain high fidelity even as the system scales up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-teleportation-nuts-and-bolts">Quantum teleportation nuts and bolts</h2>



<p>As mentioned, Quantinuum’s experiments were meticulously designed using the H2 quantum processor. The team employed the Steane code, a quantum error correction code that encodes a logical qubit across several physical qubits. </p>



<p>This code allows for the detection and correction of errors during computation, ensuring the integrity of the quantum information being teleported.</p>



<p>In both teleportation methods -- transversal gates and lattice surgery -- the process involved creating an entangled state between qubits, measuring this state, and then transferring the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unbreakable-encryption-brings-quantum-internet-communication-closer-to-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum information</a> based on those measurements. </p>



<p>The use of state tomography to measure fidelity involved preparing a known quantum state, teleporting it, and then measuring the output to assess how well the state was preserved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-facing-the-challenges-ahead">Facing the challenges ahead</h2>



<p>Despite this significant advancement, the road to fully scalable quantum computing is still dotted with challenges. </p>



<p>One major limitation is the noise introduced by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-smallest-quantum-light-detector-now-fits-on-silicon-chip/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum gates</a> and measurements during the teleportation protocols. </p>



<p>The lower fidelity observed in the lattice surgery method highlights the need for further refinement in these techniques.</p>



<p>“The fidelities for the 0QEC, 1QEC, and the MXXMZZ circuits drop according to the number of transport steps and gate count,” the researchers note. This observation underscores the delicate balance between increasing the complexity of quantum operations and maintaining high fidelity.</p>



<p>Another hurdle is the size of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-atoms-qkd-quantum-communication-revolutionizing-data-protection-privacy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum system</a>. While teleporting 30 qubits is a remarkable achievement, larger systems will be necessary to handle more complex quantum algorithms and networks. </p>



<p>Future research will likely focus on optimizing quantum error correction protocols and enhancing hardware to support larger qubit systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-teleportation-and-the-future">Quantum teleportation and the future</h2>



<p>Quantinuum’s fascinating work opens <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-quantum-revolution-will-impact-all-aspects-of-society/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">numerous avenues for future research</a>. Improving the fidelity of teleportation processes and scaling up quantum systems are immediate priorities. </p>

<p>For thousands of years, humans have gazed up at the moon, wondering what secrets it holds. Now, new research suggests that water on the moon's surface is more widespread than we thought -- even in places bathed in sunlight.</p>



<p>Roger Clark, a senior scientist at the <a href="https://www.psi.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Planetary Science Institute</a>, and his team have uncovered evidence that could change our understanding of the moon's resources. </p>



<p>"Future astronauts may be able to find water even near the equator by exploiting these water-rich areas," Clark said. "Previously, it was thought that only the polar region, and in particular, the deeply shadowed craters at the poles were where water could be found in abundance."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closer-look-at-the-lunar-landscape">Closer look at the lunar landscape</h2>



<p>Back in 2008 and 2009, the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/chandrayaan-1/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chandrayaan-1</a> spacecraft orbited the moon, collecting detailed maps of its surface using the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) imaging spectrometer. </p>



<p>The M3 instrument wasn't your average camera -- it captured 85 different colors from the visible spectrum into the infrared range. </p>



<p>This allowed the team to search for the unique fingerprints of water and hydroxyl in the sunlight reflected off the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-moon-had-active-volcanoes-just-120-million-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lunar surface</a>.</p>



<p>Imagine trying to spot a drop of water on a vast desert. Sounds tricky, right? </p>



<p>But by using infrared spectroscopy, scientists can detect tiny amounts of water and hydroxyl (a molecule made of one hydrogen and one oxygen atom) by the way they absorb light. </p>



<p>Different materials absorb and reflect light differently, giving each a unique spectral signature.</p>



<p>"Just like we see different colors from different materials, the infrared spectrometer can see many (infrared) colors to better determine the composition, including the water (H2O) and hydroxyl (OH)," Clark explained. </p>



<p>This means that even in sunlit areas, where water was thought to be scarce, we can now detect these vital molecules.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meteors-moon-rocks-and-lunar-water">Meteors, moon rocks, and lunar water</h2>



<p>One of the key findings is that meteor impacts play a significant role in distributing water across the moon. </p>



<p>When meteors crash into the surface, they excavate water-rich rocks from beneath, scattering them across all latitudes. </p>



<p>This challenges the long-held belief that useful amounts of water are only found in the dark, frigid craters near the poles.</p>



<p>By studying where this water is located, scientists can learn more about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/timeless-mystery-solved-scientists-uncover-what-is-inside-the-moons-core/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon's geological history</a>. Plus, it opens up new possibilities for future lunar missions. </p>



<p>If astronauts can find water closer to the equator, it could make long-term habitation more feasible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-metastable-moon-water">Mystery of metastable moon water</h2>



<p>But there's a catch. Water on the moon doesn't behave quite like it does on Earth. It's what's known as "metastable," meaning it's slowly broken down over millions of years. </p>



<p>"By studying the location and geologic context, we were able to show that water in the lunar surface is metastable," Clark noted. "H2O is slowly destroyed over millions of years, but with hydroxyl, OH, remaining."</p>



<p>So, while water molecules may degrade over time, hydroxyl sticks around. This hydroxyl can potentially be combined to create water and even oxygen -- a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-building-space-station-called-gateway-will-orbit-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">valuable resource for astronauts</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-wind-and-space-weathering">Solar wind and space weathering</h2>



<p>The moon's surface is also coated with a thin layer of hydroxyl, thanks to the solar wind. Protons from the sun slam into the lunar soil, interacting with oxygen in minerals to form hydroxyl in a process called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-moon-is-drifting-away-and-earth-will-never-be-the-same-without-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space weathering</a>. It's like a constant drizzle of particles reshaping the very surface of the moon.</p>



<p>"Elsewhere on the lunar surface, there appears a patina of hydroxyl, probably created from solar wind protons impacting the lunar surface," Clark said. This means that the moon is continually evolving, even without an atmosphere or weather as we know it.</p>

<p>Putting all these pieces together reveals a moon that's more geologically complex than we imagined. "Both cratering and volcanic activity can bring water-rich materials to the surface, and both are observed in the lunar data," Clark pointed out.</p>



<p>The moon primarily consists of two types of rocks: dark basaltic mare, similar to lava flows in Hawaii, and lighter anorthosite rocks that make up the highlands. </p>



<p>Interestingly, the anorthosites contain a lot of water, while the basalts have very little. This difference affects where water and hydroxyl are found and how they're bonded within the minerals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-shadows-and-mysterious-swirls">Shifting shadows and mysterious swirls</h2>



<p>Another intriguing aspect is how the strength of water and hydroxyl signals changes with the lunar day. When the sun is low on the horizon, the infrared absorptions become stronger. </p>



<p>This led scientists to think that water might be moving around the moon daily. However, Clark's team found a different explanation.</p>



<p>The effect is due to a thin surface layer that's different from the deeper soil. When the sun is low, light passes through more of this top layer, enhancing the absorption signals. </p>



<p>So, while there might still be some movement of water, the layering of the soil plays a significant role.</p>



<p>Have you ever heard of lunar swirls? These are diffuse patterns seen in certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-magma-ocean-molten-rock-found-moons-surface-south-pole-chandrayaan-3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">areas of the moon</a>, and their origins have puzzled scientists. </p>



<p>They're thought to be related to magnetic fields that divert the solar wind, reducing hydroxyl production. The new study confirms that swirls are low in hydroxyl and water content but adds that they sometimes have higher amounts of pyroxene, a common mineral.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-features-hidden-in-plain-sight">New features hidden in plain sight</h2>



<p>What's even more fascinating is that the global hydroxyl maps have revealed areas similar to known swirls but invisible in regular light. </p>



<p>These features only show up through hydroxyl absorption, suggesting they might be old, eroded swirls or entirely new types like arcs and lines.</p>



<p>By mapping the moon in these new ways, we're <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/underground-cave-found-moon-mare-tranquillitatis-could-shelter-astronauts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">uncovering secrets</a> that were hiding right under our noses -- or telescopes, in this case. It goes to show that there's always more to learn, even about our closest celestial neighbor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-moon-water-matter">Why does moon water matter?</h2>



<p>So, why does all this matter? For one, it could have a big impact on future moon missions. Knowing that water is more widely available means astronauts might not have to rely solely on the poles for resources. </p>



<p>This could simplify mission planning and open up new areas of exploration.</p>



<p>"Knowing where water is located not only helps to understand lunar geologic history, but also where astronauts may find water in the future," Clark emphasized.</p>



<p>Moreover, understanding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moon-is-shrinking-moonquakes-potential-problems-for-astronauts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon's complex geology</a> helps us piece together the history of our solar system. Each discovery adds another chapter to the story of how planets and moons evolve.</p>



<p>In the end, these findings remind us that the moon is more than just a barren rock in the sky. It's a dynamic world with a rich geological tapestry. From water hidden in sunlit soils to mysterious swirls etched by magnetic fields, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.</p>

<p>Hunting in the mysterious depths of the Red Sea takes on an unexpected twist, as biologist Eduardo Sampaio and his team gear up for another day of exploration.</p>



<p>Their mission? To uncover the elusive hunting habits of the octopus -- an enigmatic creature typically known for its solitary nature. Yet, here it plays a vital role in orchestrating multispecies cooperation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-underwater-hunt-begins">The underwater hunt begins</h2>



<p>As the team dives beneath the surface, their underwater cameras stand poised to capture the unfolding spectacle. </p>



<p>Scanning the water with eager eyes, they search for a glimpse of their elusive subject. When they finally spot an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secret-garden-thermal-springs-accelerate-octopus-egg-hatching-by-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">octopus</a>, the team begins recording and stations additional cameras to collect data. </p>



<p>After months of painstaking research and over 100 hours of film from dives across Israel, Egypt, and Australia, Sampaio is more than pleased with the results.</p>



<p>Sampaio is a postdoctoral researcher based at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the Cluster of Excellence Collective Behaviour at the <a href="https://www.uni-konstanz.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Konstanz</a>.</p>



<p>"The two camera perspectives have enabled us to create a 3D view of the scene," he noted, providing novel insights into the fascinating world of multispecies hunting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-subtle-art-of-multispecies-hunting">The subtle art of multispecies hunting</h2>



<p>Through innovative 3D field-based tracking and field experiments, Sampaio discovered that groups involving <em>Octopus cyanea</em> and various <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-quarter-of-freshwater-fish-species-face-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish species</a> exhibit structured social dynamics, with distinct roles for each species. </p>



<p>“In groups of Octopus cyanea and various fish species, social influence is not evenly distributed but rather hierarchically structured across multiple dimensions, reflecting specialized roles within the group,” explained Sampaio.</p>



<p>This research unveils how fish, particularly goatfish, act as explorers, directing the group’s movements, while the octopus dictates the timing and initiation of group activities.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-symbiotic-hunting-relationship">A symbiotic hunting relationship</h2>



<p>The findings shed light on a unique form of ecological synergy, where fish serve as an extended sensorial system for the octopus, enhancing prey detection over a larger area.</p>



<p>"This beneficial interaction enables fish to acquire otherwise unreachable prey, and octopuses to conserve energy by focusing on high-quality food sources," said Sampaio, emphasizing the sophisticated dynamics of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine life</a> collaboration.</p>



<p>By covering larger areas and providing feedback within the group, the octopus and fish create a beneficial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-in-plain-sight-brilliant-hunting-strategy-of-the-trumpetfish-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hunting system</a>, further showcasing the complexity of their relationship.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leadership-dynamics-underwater">Leadership dynamics underwater</h2>



<p>Leadership in animal groups, whether among fish, birds, or primates, is usually associated with guiding the group forward. </p>



<p>However, Sampaio’s study shows that leadership can emerge from both the stimulation and inhibition of movement. </p>



<p>In this case, the octopus plays the primary role of influencer, controlling the group's movement by inhibiting it when necessary. </p>



<p>The team’s research reveals that the composition of the group greatly impacts individual investment and collective action. </p>



<p>Exploitative behaviors from certain group members prompt a response from the octopus, which enforces partner control by physically "punching" the exploiters, thereby reinforcing its role as the de facto leader.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survival-of-the-fittest-underwater">Survival of the fittest underwater</h2>



<p>In practical terms, this leadership dynamic means that when the octopus catches prey, it kills it outright. "One item of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aquatic-blue-crabs-ambush-their-prey-on-land/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prey</a> is not divided; it is taken by whoever catches it first,” explained Sampaio.</p>



<p>However, since the interaction between fish and octopus repeats several times during the hunt, prey is effectively shared, as sometimes the octopus catches the prey and sometimes it is the fish that secure the meal. </p>



<p>This back-and-forth interaction showcases the adaptive and cooperative nature of multispecies hunting in the underwater world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-octopus-intelligence">Insights into octopus intelligence</h2>



<p>The research highlights the remarkable social competence and cognitive flexibility of the otherwise solitary <em>Octopus cyanea</em>.</p>



<p>According to Sampaio, the findings broaden our understanding of leadership and sociality, emphasizing the complexity and adaptability of social interactions in nature.</p>



<p>The research has unveiled the sophisticated and often overlooked collaboration among <a href="http://Butterfly's rapid expansion led to lower genetic diversity" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine species</a>.</p>

<p>What makes the octopus and its hunting partners so successful is not just their cooperation, but the precise and tactical nature of their hunts. </p>

By using their highly flexible limbs and ability to camouflage, the octopus can surprise prey, while the fish act as scouts, sweeping through the environment to locate potential targets.</p>



<p>The octopus carefully positions itself based on the fish's exploration, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. This method of shared responsibility ensures that the group covers a much larger area than a solitary hunter ever could, maximizing their chances of success. </p>



<p>The hunting party relies on a balance between the octopus's ambush tactics and the sensory capabilities of the fish, creating a finely tuned and efficient predatory system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cognitive-flexibility-for-cooperative-hunting">Cognitive flexibility for cooperative hunting</h2>



<p>The octopus’s ability to adapt its strategy based on the behavior of its hunting partners further demonstrates its cognitive flexibility. </p>



<p>For instance, when goatfish signal the presence of prey, the octopus quickly moves into position, leveraging its ability to move silently and strike with precision.</p>



<p>These finely tuned interactions highlight the octopus’s role as both a tactician and a cooperative hunter, revealing a deeper level of intelligence than typically attributed to marine life.</p>

Octopuses have mastered the art of "multispecies hunting" by cooperating

Hunting in the mysterious depths of the Red Sea takes...

<p>Last week, NASA's Perseverance rover spotted something that turned heads both on Earth and Mars: a black-and-white striped rock named "Freya Castle" that is unlike anything seen before on the Red Planet. </p>



<p>This peculiar find has sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among scientists and space enthusiasts alike.</p>



<p>According to Athanasios Klidaras, a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://www.purdue.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Purdue University</a> working with the mission team, this discovery could hint at even more intriguing finds as the rover continues its journey.</p>



<p>"This possibility has us excited, and we hope that as we continue to drive uphill, Perseverance will encounter an outcrop of this new rock type so that more detailed measurements can be acquired," Klidaras enthused.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climbing-to-the-jezero-crater-rim">Climbing to the Jezero Crater rim</h2>



<p>Perseverance has been <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">steadily climbing</a> the steep slopes leading to the rim of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-samples-bunsen-peak-rock-jezero-crater-martian-lake/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jezero Crater</a>. The goal of this part of the mission is to hunt for ancient rocks that might teach us about early Martian history.</p>



<p>For nearly a month, the rover has been making its way uphill. Initially, the steep terrain made progress slow. But recently, Perseverance found a flatter stretch, allowing it to cover more ground. </p>



<p>From this vantage point, it can see landmarks from earlier in the mission, like the "Kodiak" butte on the hazy horizon, dusted by nearby storms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spotting-freya-castle-among-the-pebbles">Spotting 'Freya Castle' among the pebbles</h2>



<p>While traversing an otherwise unremarkable pebbly landscape, team members with keen eyes noticed something unusual in low-resolution images from the rover's navigation camera. </p>



<p>They spotted a cobble with hints of an odd texture and gave it the name "Freya Castle."</p>



<p>Athanasios Klidaras explained, "The team planned a multispectral observation using the Mastcam-Z camera in order to get a closer look before driving away." They wanted to gather more data before the rover moved on.</p>



<p>When the detailed images came back a few days later, after Perseverance had already left the area, the team realized just how unique "Freya Castle" was. </p>



<p>The rock, about 8 inches across, displayed striking alternating black and white stripes.</p>



<p>"The internet immediately lit up with speculation about what this 'zebra rock' might be, and we've enjoyed reading your theories!" said Klidaras. </p>



<p>The unusual pattern has people wondering: what could have caused such distinctive stripes on Mars?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solving-the-striped-rock-mystery">Solving the striped rock mystery</h2>



<p>The science team believes that "Freya Castle" has a texture unlike any they've seen in Jezero Crater, and perhaps on the entire planet. </p>



<p>While they have limited information about its chemical composition, early thoughts are that igneous or metamorphic processes might have created the stripes.</p>



<p>This suggests the rock could have formed under intense heat or pressure, possibly pointing to volcanic activity or significant geological transformations in Mars's past. It's a tantalizing clue that could help piece together the planet's geological history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-past-samples-hint-at-water-on-mars">Past samples hint at water on Mars</h2>



<p>This isn't the first time Perseverance has made exciting discoveries. In 2022, the rover collected seven rock samples from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-mars-rocks-contain-signs-of-life-scientists-call-to-bring-them-back-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">"fan front" of Jezero Crater</a>. These rocks contain minerals typically formed in the presence of water.</p>



<p>The rover drilled into the Martian bedrock to extract pencil-sized cores, sealing them in tubes for future analysis on Earth. </p>



<p>Before drilling, it captured images of the surrounding sediments. Scientists analyzed these images to estimate the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">grain size and mineral composition</a>.</p>



<p>Their findings suggest that these rocks were either deposited by water or formed within watery environments. This sheds light on the past conditions of the crater, hinting that water once flowed there.</p>



<p>The delta in Jezero Crater likely formed from sediment carried by a river into what is now a dry lakebed. If life ever existed on Mars, scientists speculate that it could be preserved within these rocks and sediment layers. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-freya-castle">Significance of 'Freya Castle'</h2>



<p>Discoveries like "Freya Castle" add pieces to the puzzle, helping us understand where to look for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-search-for-signs-of-life-on-mars-continues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signs of ancient life</a>.</p>



<p>Since "Freya Castle" is a loose stone that differs from the underlying bedrock, it's likely that it arrived from somewhere else, possibly rolling downhill from a higher source. This possibility has the team excited.</p>



<p>As Klidaras and his colleagues continue to guide Perseverance uphill, they hope to encounter an outcrop of this new rock type. </p>



<p>This would allow them to acquire more detailed measurements and perhaps unlock more secrets about Mars's geological history.</p>



<p>"Freya Castle" isn't the only interesting rock the rover has found recently. Ever since reaching the vicinity of the crater rim, the team has noticed a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-curiosity-rover-makes-surprising-find-under-martian-rock-sulfur-crystals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greater variety of rocks</a>. </p>



<p>They've seen diverse collections of boulders at locations like "Mount Washburn."</p>



<p>Could these rocks be our first glimpses of ancient materials uplifted from deep within Mars by the Jezero impact? It's an exciting possibility that could provide valuable insights into the planet's past.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-for-perseverance">What's next for Perseverance?</h2>



<p>As Perseverance <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-perseverance-rover-now-uses-ai-search-minerals-life-on-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">continues its mission</a>, there's a sense of anticipation. <p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

Instead, researchers from Stanford Medicine have found that our bodies undergo dramatic molecular changes at two specific ages: 44 and 60. This research, published in Nature Aging, reveals that aging happens in sudden bursts rather than smooth transitions.</p>

<p>The Stanford study tracked over 135,000 different molecules and microbes in 108 participants aged 25 to 75 over several years. And that's true no matter what class of molecules you look at."</p>



<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
