<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

Wasps shine a light on 'dark biodiversity' in rainforests

<p>Imagine being able to control the tiniest part of an atom -- a level of precision that’s almost unfathomable. Well, researchers have now taken that step. By influencing the nucleus of a titanium atom, they have created new opportunities for storing quantum information. </p>



<p>The work, led by Sander Otte and his team, took place over weeks of painstaking research.</p>



<p>“A Ti-47 atom, to be precise,” Otte explained. “It has one neutron less than the naturally abundant Ti-48, which makes the nucleus slightly magnetic.” </p>



<p>This seemingly small difference in atomic structure opened a door to possibilities we hadn’t even dreamt of before.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-manipulating-the-nucleus-of-a-titanium-atom">Manipulating the nucleus of a titanium atom</h2>



<p>For weeks, Otte’s team studied a single titanium atom. A Ti-47 atom, to be exact. Unlike the more common Ti-48, this atom has one less neutron, giving its nucleus a unique magnetic property, referred to as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/manipulating-quantum-dance-of-spinning-electrons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">"spin" in the quantum world</a>. </p>



<p>Now, imagine this spin as a tiny compass needle that can point in various directions, representing quantum information.</p>



<p>But the nucleus of an atom is not an easy thing to manipulate. It floats in what can be described as a vast emptiness within the atom, far from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/watching-electrons-move-in-attoseconds-with-worlds-fastest-microscope/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">orbiting electrons</a>, and remains largely unaffected by its surroundings. </p>



<p>However, there is one exception -- through a weak interaction known as "hyperfine interaction," the spin of an electron in one of the outer shells of the atom can influence the nucleus.</p>



<p>This delicate and intricate interaction is what Otte and his team at <a href="https://www.tudelft.nl/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Delft University of Technology</a> focused on. </p>



<p>“Easier said than done,” admits Lukas Veldman, a Ph.D. researcher who played a key role in the study. The hyperfine interaction, he explains, is so weak that it requires an extremely precise magnetic field to have any effect at all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experimenting-at-the-edge-of-physics">Experimenting at the edge of physics</h2>



<p>Once they had fine-tuned the conditions -- after weeks of careful tweaking and adjustments -- the researchers delivered a voltage pulse to disturb the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massless-dirac-electrons-seen-moving-in-four-dimensions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electron spin</a>. </p>



<p>This tiny jolt caused both the electron and nuclear spins to wobble in sync for just a fraction of a microsecond. </p>



<p>“Exactly how Schrödinger predicted,” says Veldman, excited by how closely the experimental results aligned with theoretical predictions.</p>



<p>But this wasn’t just a random wobble. The precision of the experiment, combined with Veldman’s calculations, showed that no <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/transmitting-quantum-information-using-electron-spin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum information</a> was lost during this interaction. </p>



<p>This is a key finding because it means that quantum information could theoretically be stored safely in the nucleus, away from external disturbances that typically threaten delicate quantum states.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moving-the-nucleus-of-an-atom-why-it-matters">Moving the nucleus of an atom: Why it matters</h2>



<p>The world of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computing</a> has long been searching for ways to store and manipulate information without losing it to environmental noise. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/using-artificial-intelligence-ai-to-make-quantum-computers-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum bits (qubits)</a> are incredibly sensitive, and finding a way to protect them is one of the biggest challenges facing researchers. </p>



<p>The idea that quantum information could be stored in the nucleus of an atom, shielded from its surroundings, presents a compelling possibility.</p>



<p>But for Otte, this discovery isn’t just about the practical applications.</p>



<p> “This experiment gives humans influence on the state of matter on an unimaginably small scale,” he says. “To me, that alone makes it worth the effort.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-for-quantum-information-storage">What’s next for quantum information storage?</h2>



<p>While the current study brings us closer to a practical application of storing quantum information in atomic nuclei, there’s still much work to be done. </p>



<p>As Veldman pointed out, achieving the precise conditions necessary for hyperfine interaction is no small feat. The magnetic field has to be tuned just right, and even then, the interaction is incredibly brief. However, the potential is enormous.</p>



<p>If future experiments build on this success, we may see a new era in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computing-giant-leap-forward-breakthrough-ultra-pure-silicon-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computing</a> where information can be stored more securely and for longer periods. </p>



<p>This would be a huge leap forward for the field, potentially opening the door to computers that are not only faster but more reliable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-one-step-closer-but-not-the-final-frontier">One step closer, but not the final frontier</h2>



<p>Despite the potential for this research to revolutionize <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-material-chiral-superconductor-shows-great-potential-quantum-computing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computing</a>, Otte’s team is motivated by something more fundamental -- the sheer joy of discovery. </p>



<p>“What drives us isn’t necessarily the end goal,” Otte shares. “It’s the thrill of being able to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-realm-vibrating-atoms-tune-single-electron-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">manipulate matter</a> at such a small scale and to see theoretical physics play out in real-time.”</p>



<p>For those of us watching from the sidelines, the significance of their work may not hit home immediately. But make no mistake -- controlling the nucleus of an atom, even for a brief moment, is a significant step forward in our understanding of the quantum world. </p>



<p>The applications could be endless, from advances in computing to breakthroughs in material science and beyond.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-can-we-expect-in-a-quantum-world">What can we expect in a quantum world?</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, quantum technology is still in its infancy, but research like Otte’s brings us <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-quantum-revolution-will-impact-all-aspects-of-society/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">closer to the future we’ve long envisioned</a>. </p>



<p>While we may not have fully functional quantum computers yet, each new discovery helps lay the foundation for what’s to come. And in the world of quantum mechanics, even the tiniest step can have massive implications.</p>



<p>For now, the ability to control the heart of an atom remains a huge achievement. Whether it leads to practical applications in computing or simply deepens our understanding of the universe, one thing is clear: the quantum realm is filled with mysteries waiting to be unraveled, and we’re only just beginning to scratch the surface.</p>

Quantum wobble: How scientists took control of the nucleus of a single atom

<p>Protein production is being reimagined as scientists in Germany pioneer an innovative method to transform CO2 into protein and vitamins, powered entirely by renewable energy. </p>



<p>In a world where climate change and a rapidly growing population threaten food security, this revolutionary process offers a sustainable and efficient solution.</p>



<p>By harnessing microbes and renewable energy, researchers are creating micronutrient-enriched proteins that could play a crucial role in feeding the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-co2-to-produce-protein-and-vitamins">Using CO2 to produce protein and vitamins</h2>



<p>At the heart of this innovation is a process that makes beer brewing look ancient. </p>



<p>"This is a fermentation process similar to how you make beer, but instead of giving the microbes sugar, we gave them gas and acetate," explained Largus Angenent, the corresponding author from the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a>.</p>



<p>The method involves using hydrogen, oxygen, and CO2 to feed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-activities-underground-revealed-by-new-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes</a>, which in turn produce protein and vitamin B9. </p>



<p>"We knew that yeast could produce vitamin B9 on their own with sugar, however, we didn’t know if they could do the same with acetate," said Angenent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-proteins-from-bioreactors">Sustainable proteins from bioreactors</h2>



<p>As the global population approaches 10 billion, the challenges of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-messing-with-vital-microbes-in-blueberries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> and depleting land resources become more pressing. </p>



<p>"One alternative is growing proteins in bioreactors through biotechnology rather than growing crops to feed animals. It makes agriculture much more efficient," noted Angenent.</p>



<p>His team designed a two-stage bioreactor system that churns out yeast rich in protein and vitamin B9, an essential nutrient for bodily functions like cell growth and metabolism.</p>



<p>In the first phase, the bacterium Thermoanaerobacter kivui converts hydrogen and CO2 into acetate, a key compound found in vinegar. </p>



<p>In the second phase, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as baker’s yeast, feeds on acetate and oxygen to create protein and vitamin B9. </p>



<p>This process is powered by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clean-energy-biodiversity-wildlife-habitats-delicate-balancing-act/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clean energy</a> sources like windmills, which can produce the required hydrogen and oxygen by zapping water with electricity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-food-production">Sustainable food production </h2>



<p>The results were undeniably impressive and hold significant promise for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-food-systems-are-gaining-momentum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainable food</a> production.</p>



<p>Acetate-fed yeast was able to produce nearly the same amount of vitamin B9 as its sugar-fed counterpart, showing that this innovative method is not only efficient but also highly productive. </p>



<p>Remarkably, just six grams (0.4 tablespoons) of dried yeast is enough to meet the daily vitamin B9 requirement.</p>



<p>According to study co-author Michael Rychlik from the <a href="https://www.tum.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Munich</a>, who led the vitamin measurements, this achievement is a significant step forward in sustainable food production.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-revolutionary-source-of-protein">A revolutionary source of protein </h2>



<p>For protein content, the yeast produced in the bioreactor surpasses traditional sources like beef, pork, fish, and lentils. </p>



<p>"Eighty-five grams, or six tablespoons, of yeast provides 61% of daily protein needs, compared to 34% from beef and 38% from lentils," said Angenent.</p>



<p>However, he cautions that the yeast must be treated to remove compounds that could increase the risk of gout if consumed in large quantities. </p>



<p>Even after treatment, the yeast still provides 41% of daily protein requirements, comparable to other common protein sources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-global-challenges">Addressing global challenges</h2>



<p>This groundbreaking technology addresses critical global challenges such as environmental conservation, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fungal-infections-are-threatening-global-food-security/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food security</a>, and public health. </p>



<p>By using renewable energy and CO2, the system reduces carbon emissions in food production and minimizes the need for land, freeing up space for conservation efforts. </p>



<p>"The fact that we can make vitamins and protein at the same time at a pretty high production rate without using any land is exciting," said Angenent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed </h2>



<p>While this sustainable protein alternative holds great promise, Angenent emphasizes that there is still much work to be done. </p>



<p>The team plans to optimize and scale up production, assess food safety, and conduct economic analyses.</p>



<p>"The end product is vegetarian/vegan, non-GMO, and sustainable, which could appeal to consumers," said Angenent, noting that market adoption will take time.</p>



<p>This innovative approach offers a potential solution to future food scarcity while also contributing to the fight against climate change. </p>



<p>By decoupling food production from land use and utilizing renewable energy, the technology opens up new possibilities for sustainable agriculture and food security.</p>

<p>In a momentous scientific leap, researchers have successfully sequenced RNA from an extinct Tasmanian tiger specimen that is over a century old. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the field of genetics and paleogenomics.</p>



<p>For the first time, transcriptomes -- essentially the complete sets of RNA transcripts from an organism -- have been reconstructed for an extinct species, providing unprecedented insights into the biology of the Tasmanian tiger.</p>



<p>Emilio Mármol, the study's lead author and a dedicated researcher at SciLifeLab, underscores the importance of this venture.</p>



<p>“Resurrecting the Tasmanian tiger or the woolly mammoth is not a trivial task and will require a deep knowledge of both the genome and transcriptome regulation of such renowned species, something that only now is starting to be revealed," he enthused.</p>



<p>This impressive scientific endeavor broadens our understanding of the genetic makeup of these fascinating creatures while bringing researchers ever closer to future efforts in de-extinction, highlighting the intricate connection between genetics, evolution, and the survival of species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-a-tasmanian-tiger">What is a Tasmanian Tiger?</h2>



<p>The Tasmanian Tiger, or thylacine, was a carnivorous marsupial that once roamed Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. It looked a bit like a dog but had tiger-like stripes on its lower back, along with a stiff tail, big jaws, and a pouch like a kangaroo. </p>



<p>Even though it gave off wild canine vibes, the thylacine was actually part of a totally different evolutionary group, which highlights the fascinating idea of convergent evolution.</p>



<p> Adult thylacines usually weighed around 30 kilograms (66 pounds), with males being a bit bigger than females. They were nocturnal hunters, going after small mammals and birds using their sharp eyesight and strong jaws.</p>



<p>Sadly, the thylacine was driven to extinction in the early 20th century, mainly because of human activities. European settlers hunted them down, mistakenly blaming them for taking out livestock. Habitat destruction and competition with introduced species also took a toll on their numbers. </p>



<p>The last known Tasmanian Tiger died in captivity in 1936 at the Hobart Zoo, marking a sad end for one of the most unique marsupials on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pulling-rna-from-an-extinct-animal">Pulling RNA from an extinct animal</h2>



<p>The Tasmanian tiger's extinction in the early 20th century was a significant loss for our planet, but this research breakthrough opens the door to understanding it and other extinct species more deeply than ever before.</p>



<p>The researchers' work helps us understand how a species lived, functioned, and evolved. </p>



<p>This was achieved by constructing the skin and skeletal muscle transcriptomes -- an invaluable step towards de-extinction and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-world-unraveling-mysteries-life-origin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding RNA</a> viruses' evolution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-de-extinction-requires-more-than-just-dna">De-extinction requires more than just DNA</h2>



<p>Now, most efforts in de-extinction concentrate on DNA. Though essential, DNA tells only part of the story. </p>



<p>To get a more comprehensive picture, researchers need to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-junk-is-crucial-for-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decode RNA</a>, the molecules carrying genetic instructions for building proteins. </p>



<p>In this important study, researchers sequenced RNA gleaned from a Tasmanian tiger specimen that had been preserved at room temperature for over 130 years at the <a href="https://www.nrm.se/engelska/in-english" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Swedish Museum of Natural History</a> in Stockholm.</p>



<p>“This is the first time that we have had a glimpse into the existence of thylacine-specific regulatory genes, such as microRNAs, that got extinct more than one century ago," noted Marc R. Friedländer, an Associate Professor at <a href="https://www.su.se/cmlink/stockholm-university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockholm University</a></p>



<p>While DNA is the life blueprint, RNA is the project manager, directing which genes are expressed when. With the Tasmanian tiger’s transcriptome in hand, scientists now possess a trove of data that could be pivotal for de-extinction efforts.</p>

<p>But, as Love Dalén, a Professor of evolutionary genomics at Stockholm University, points out, the implications extend beyond extinct animals.</p>



<p>“In the future, we may be able to recover RNA not only from extinct animals but also RNA virus genomes such as SARS-CoV-2 and their evolutionary precursors from the skins of bats and other host organisms held in museum collections," Dalén explained.</p>

<p>In a recent study, researchers have uncovered the existence of two distinct maps within the brain's secondary motor cortex. The research offers a transformative perspective on how the brain orchestrates spatial planning and navigation.</p>



<p>These dual maps - one self-centered and the other world-centered - provide vital insights into how our brains manage complex tasks, from planning movements to understanding our position in the environment.</p>



<p>This remarkable breakthrough could have far-reaching implications for understanding a variety of neurological conditions (such as stroke) that impair spatial attention and disrupt an individual’s ability to navigate their surroundings.</p>



<p>The research opens new avenues for targeted therapies that could enhance recovery and improve quality of life for patients suffering from such conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dual-maps-in-the-brain">Dual maps in the brain</h2>



<p>“We discovered that the premotor cortex uses a self-centered coordinate system for spatial planning, but that it also encodes a world-centered map that is used for determining the body’s current position in the world," said Dr. Jeffrey Erlich, Group Leader at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre at <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>.</p>



<p>"This self-centered and world-centered information is combined in individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neurons-can-predict-human-speech-before-we-say-a-word/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neurons</a> in a multiplicative way, which makes it easier to disentangle downstream.”</p>



<p>The study, published in the <em>Journal of Neuroscience</em>, introduces a novel task that allowed the researchers to differentiate between self-centered and world-centered reference frames using machine learning techniques.</p>



<p>The experts recorded neural activity from the frontal orienting field (FOF), a part of the secondary motor cortex in rats, to decode this information.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-transitions-between-maps">How the brain transitions between maps </h2>



<p>“Imagine being asked where the nearest coffee shop is. You could say ‘walk forward and turn left’ (self-centered directions) or ‘walk North then East’ (world-centered directions)," said Dr. Erlich.</p>



<p>"We want to understand how the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-daydream-to-awareness-the-brains-alert-mechanism/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain transitions</a> between these reference frames and transforms them into action.”</p>



<p>The task involved carefully training rats to place their nose into a designated starting porthole, after which a light would illuminate to indicate the target porthole. </p>



<p>This setup required the rats to focus on the visual cue as a guide for their next move, enhancing their understanding of the spatial layout.</p>



<p>Following an auditory cue, the rats then moved to the target porthole to receive a reward, reinforcing the connection between the cues and their actions. </p>



<p>The crucial waiting period between the appearance of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visual-cues-initiate-the-brains-decision-to-cooperate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visual cue</a> and the auditory signal allowed the researchers to closely monitor neural activity. </p>



<p>This pause provided an opportunity to distinguish between the brain’s planning phase and the subsequent action, enabling the experts to determine whether the frontal orienting field (FOF) was using a self-centered or world-centered map for spatial planning during the task.</p>

<p>“By adding the right amount of complexity to our task, we were able to have good experimental control over the timings. This approach allowed us to tease apart the different dimensions of representation,” noted Dr. Erlich.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers discovered a world-centered map in the frontal orienting field, a finding that had not been previously reported.</p>



<p>“We were surprised to find a world-centered map in FOF as this has never been reported before. We want to explore what this position information is being used for and under what circumstances it becomes functionally relevant,” said Dr. Erlich.</p>

<p>Scuba diving isn't just for adventure seekers anymore. Even the world’s smallest - and apparently the scrappiest - members of the animal kingdom are doing it. A particular type of semi-aquatic lizard has something truly unique to show us about the art of survival with air bubbles in the underwater world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysteries-of-underwater-lizard-breathing">Mysteries of underwater lizard breathing</h2>



<p>The research was led by Lindsey Swierk, an assistant research professor of biological sciences at <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a>. </p>



<p>Swierk's work is centered on the study of water anoles, semi-aquatic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-lizard-day-2024-celebrating-our-scaly-companions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizards</a> native to the tropical rainforests of southern Costa Rica. Her research has unveiled remarkable feats about these fascinating creatures.</p>

<p>“We know that they can stay underwater for a really long time. We also know that they're pulling oxygen from this bubble of air. We didn’t know whether there was actually any functional role for this bubble in respiration," Swierk noted.</p>



<p>"Is it something that lizards do that is just a side effect of their skin’s properties or a respiratory reflex, or is this bubble actually allowing them to stay underwater longer than they would, say, without a bubble?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lizards-dive-underwater-to-survive">Lizards dive underwater to survive</h2>



<p>What our research team was eager to find out, said Swierk, was the actual role this bubble played in the lizard's underwater survival.</p>



<p>She questioned - is this bubble a byproduct of the lizard's skin properties and respiratory reflex, or is it an ingenious tool allowing these creatures to outlast their time underwater?</p>



<p>To disentangle the mystery, Swierk conducted an experiment that involved applying a substance to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-sea-lizard-khinjaria-had-teeth-like-daggers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizards</a>’ skin that would prevent bubble formation. </p>



<p>The logic? “Lizard skin is hydrophobic. Typically, that allows air to stick very tightly to the skin and permits this bubble to form. But when you cover the skin with an emollient, air no longer sticks to the skin surface, so the bubbles can't form,” explained Swierk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bubbles-are-life-savers-quite-literally">Bubbles are life-savers, quite literally</h2>



<p>The recorded findings were compelling. It turned out that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/endangered-lizard-faces-an-unexpected-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizards</a> in the control group, which were not subjected to the emollient, could stay underwater an impressive 32% longer than their bubble-deprived counterparts.</p>



<p>“This is really significant because this is the first experiment that truly shows adaptive significance of bubbles. Rebreathing bubbles allow lizards to stay underwater longer. Before, we suspected it – we saw a pattern -- but we didn't actually test if it served a functional role,” said Swierk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lizards-bubbles-and-underwater-breathing">Lizards, bubbles, and underwater breathing</h2>



<p>The function of these bubbles isn't just about a lizard's whim to stay longer in the water. It’s a life or death situation where the ability to stay underwater longer provides the perfect refuge from predators. </p>



<p>Anoles are kind of like the chicken nuggets of the forest. Birds eat them, snakes eat them.</p>



<p>“So by jumping in the water, they can escape a lot of their predators, and they remain very still underwater," said Swierk.</p>



<p>"They're pretty well camouflaged underwater as well, and they just stay underwater until that danger passes. We know that they can stay underwater at least about 20 minutes, but probably longer.”</p>



<p>What's even more intriguing is the question of whether these lizards are using the bubble as a "physical gill." This term is used for insects that use bubbles to breathe underwater.</p>



<p>Swierk’s graduate student, Alexandra Martin, is working on testing this theory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigating-the-physical-gill-hypothesis">Investigating the physical gill hypothesis</h2>



<p>Martin's research involves a meticulous examination of the gas exchange process occurring within these bubbles. </p>



<p>By measuring the concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide in and around the bubble as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coexisting-lizards-challenge-what-we-know-about-natural-selection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizard</a> remains submerged, the team hopes to determine whether there is sufficient gas exchange to classify this bubble as a 'physical gill.' </p>



<p>Such a discovery would not only deepen our understanding of these lizards' physiology but could also have broader implications for studying similar adaptations across different species. </p>



<p>Martin is optimistic, stating: "If successful, this finding could redefine how we perceive aquatic adaptations in reptiles."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-evolutionary-biology">Implications for evolutionary biology</h2>



<p>The findings concerning water anoles have stirred interest in evolutionary biology, particularly regarding the development of survival mechanisms. </p>



<p>The ability to remain submerged for extended periods may represent a significant evolutionary advantage.</p>



<p>Researchers are now considering whether such adaptations are isolated to specific locales or if they might be more widespread among related species. </p>



<p>Further exploration on the lizard breathing bubbles could provide insights into how these traits evolved and highlight the environmental pressures that prompted such unique adaptations. </p>



<p>Investigating these enigmatic survival strategies enhances our understanding of evolutionary processes, shedding light on the dynamic interactions between organisms and their environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-greater-impact">The greater impact</h2>



<p>When discussing the wider implications of her research, Swierk noted the exciting potential of bioinspired materials.</p>



<p>More broadly, she considers the sheer delight of unearthing new animal behaviors that engage and excite our curiosity.</p>



<p>“I've had people talk to me about how much they love scuba diving and freediving, and how they're interested in how animals might do the same thing,” said Swierk. </p>



<p>“So there's a great opportunity to get people excited about science by having this relationship between what they love to do and what’s evolved in nature. Even in animals that seem commonplace -- you're always finding new things.”</p>



<p>Her research paper, “Novel rebreathing adaptation extends dive time in a semi-aquatic lizard,” has brought to light a new facet of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/endangered-lizard-faces-an-unexpected-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lizard survival tactics</a> that has been hiding beneath the water's surface all this time. </p>

<p>Among the multidimensional questions surrounding these ancient beasts, one that stands out pertains to their untimely extinction approximately 4,000 years ago. </p>



<p>The answer may surprise you, and it constitutes an ingenious theory, connecting woolly mammoth extinction with... hay fever!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-allergenic-apocalypse-theory">Allergenic apocalypse theory</h2>



<p>Researchers across Europe have suggested a peculiar theory -- <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-pollen-may-help-clouds-form-impacting-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant pollen</a>. The mammoths, similar to their present-day relatives, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/african-elephants-will-soon-become-extinct-without-immediate-international-help/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephants</a>, possessed an extraordinarily sensitive sense of smell.</p>



<p>Pollen, as it turns out, might have caused allergic reactions in these gargantuan creatures, compromising their olfactory prowess. </p>



<p>This would have hampered their ability to detect mates from afar, consequently affecting their breeding rates, leading to population decline, and ultimately resulting in their downfall.</p>



<p>Researchers posit that during the breeding season, susceptibility to odors is very important for animals. </p>



<p>The development of allergies from plant pollen could lead to decrements in sensitivity to odors in animals during the breeding season, thereby possibly explaining the extinction due to a decrease in mating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woolly-mammoth-an-ancient-titan">Woolly mammoth: An ancient titan</h2>



<p>The woolly mammoth (<em>Mammuthus primigenius</em>) was one of the last successors in the lineage of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-mammoths-survived-longer-than-initially-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammoth species</a>.</p>



<p>Standing around 13 feet tall and weighing approximately six tons, these massive mammals were quite common across northern Europe, Asia, and North America during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-age-data-analysis-reshapes-climate-future-lowers-warming-estimates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">last Ice Age</a>.</p>



<p>They <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-drove-woolly-mammoths-to-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">co-existed with early humans</a>, who benefited from hunting these beasts for food and using their bones and tusks for creating weapons and artwork.</p>



<p>However, the specific reason for woolly mammoth extinction remains a topic of intense debate, with a plethora of theories postulating human hunting and drastic climate change as major factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-on-woolly-mammoth-extinction">Evidence on woolly mammoth extinction</h2>



<p>This study, which opens up a new perspective on the extinction of these colossal creatures, has its roots in detailed analysis of tissue samples recovered from mammoth corpses encased in the permafrost of north-eastern Siberia.</p>



<p>The researchers identified traces of immunoglobulins, or antibodies, which are Y-shaped proteins utilized by the immune system to battle infections, and also <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pollen-allergies-will-be-intensified-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">allergens</a> such as plant metabolites, volatile organic compounds, and pollen that the mammoths likely inhaled.</p>



<p>This critical discovery suggests the presence of allergic diseases and related symptoms, including loss of sense of smell. </p>



<p>The researchers theorize that "Probably these changes in allergic responses of mammoths at a period of climate changes led to a decrease in the mammoth population and, as a result, to their disappearance." </p>



<p>This study is the first of its kind, introducing the allergy theory and detecting fragments of immunoglobulins in mammoths.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grand-debate-continues">Grand debate continues</h2>



<p>Despite this research, the woolly mammoth extinction debate continues, offering a variety of compelling arguments.</p>



<p>A 2015 study by British researchers assigned blame to humans for the mammoth extinction event, stating that the creatures quickly died out wherever prehistoric people expanded on continents and islands. </p>



<p>However, a 2008 genetic study suggested that climate change and diseases were the most probable causes of extinction, and a 2021 study attributed the extinction to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-age-data-analysis-reshapes-climate-future-lowers-warming-estimates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rapid climate warming</a>, leading to melting icebergs, and subsequently wiping out the vegetation on which mammoths relied.</p>



<p>Despite these varied perspectives, the overarching consensus is that no single reason can fully encapsulate the complex phenomena leading to extinction. </p>



<p>Instead, a collection of factors, including the intriguing allergy theory, paints a more comprehensive picture of the woolly mammoth's transition into the annals of history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woolly-mammoth-s-legacy">Woolly mammoth's legacy </h2>



<p>The extinction of the woolly mammoth remains a complex and multifaceted mystery, with each new discovery providing a piece of the puzzle. </p>



<p>While the pollen allergy theory offers an innovative angle, it is clear that more research is needed to fully understand the factors that contributed to the downfall of these magnificent creatures. </p>



<p>Future studies, including further examination of tissue samples and environmental conditions, could shed light on how allergies, climate change, human interference, or a combination of all these factors led to the woolly mammoth's extinction. </p>



<p>As scientists continue to explore these questions, the woolly mammoth's legacy endures, symbolizing the delicate balance between species survival and environmental change.</p>

<p>Notable examples include salmon that swim hundreds of miles upstream to their birthplace and racing pigeons that can find their way home over vast distances. </p>



<p>But it's not just fish and birds that have this fascinating ability. This sense of 'home' is also present in other species such as bees, frogs, rats, and even sea turtles. </p>



<p>They rely on physical cues like landmarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/earths-magnetic-field-origin-structure-and-impact-on-humanity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's magnetic field</a>, and the sky's pattern of polarized light to return home. Now, add one more name to the list -- the cave-dwelling mysid shrimp.</p>

<p>Pérez, along with his diligent team, shines a light on the homing behavior of a unique cave-dwelling mysid shrimp, also informally known as the possum shrimp. Female possum shrimps carry their larvae in pouches, hence earning them this colloquial name.</p>



<p>Dr. Pérez's recent investigation, documented in Frontiers in Marine Science, reveals an intriguing aspect of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-impacting-marine-life-more-than-we-realized/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">homing behavior</a> of these shrimps. </p>



<p>Their research unveils that the shrimps can differentiate between the unique chemical seascapes of their home caves from those of nearby caves. </p>

<p>This adventurous routine is planned primarily for feeding on algae, detritus, and other zooplankton.</p>

<p>To dig deeper into the mysteries of these shrimps' homing abilities, Dr. Pérez and his team conducted a unique experiment involving three underwater caves situated in Calanques National Park off southern France. </p>



<p>The time had come to put their hypothesis to the test. Do these shrimps really distinguish their home caves based on a distinct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/device-sniffs-out-unknown-ocean-molecules-that-can-be-used-for-drug-discovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chemical seascape</a>?</p>



<p>The team meticulously set up a system involving a Y-shaped channel, shrimps, and water samples from the three caves. </p>



<p>Each shrimp was allowed to choose between water flows from two different caves. The difference in the time spent by a shrimp in each water flow would hint at their preference for their home cave.</p>



<p>And the results? Loud and Clear: The shrimps proved the scientist's hypothesis to be correct. </p>



<p>The <em>H. margalefi</em> shrimp showed an evident preference for the water from their respective caves over water from other caves.</p>

<p>“We know that food availability in marine cave ecosystems largely depends on the daily migrations of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-help-predict-ocean-biodiversity-losses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zooplankton</a> such as mysids," Perez explained.</p>



<p>"Our results suggest that any change in water quality or sessile fauna inside caves can alter their chemical seascape, with a likely negative impact on the functioning of the whole ecosystem."</p>



<p>This is concerning, because due to global change, mass mortality of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-fate-of-coral-reefs-lies-in-the-hands-of-their-tiny-inhabitants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sponges and corals</a> are becoming more frequent.</p>



<p>“We are currently following up on our results by trying to correlate the chemical seascapes from different caves with the biodiversity of sessile organisms living in them, focusing on the role of metabolites from sponges and corals," concludes Perez.</p>

<p>When you think about evolution, the ear might not be the first thing that springs to mind. But it turns out that our ears, the little organ tucked away in our skull plays a surprising role in how mammals adapt to their environments. </p>



<p>An international team of scientists has discovered something quite astonishing. Mammals with little to no genetic connection but sharing similar lifestyles have evolved similar inner ear shapes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammals-and-their-inner-ears">Mammals and their inner ears</h2>



<p>One could argue that few parts of the animal body are as vital yet overlooked as the vertebrate inner ear. This intricate structure has two vital tasks: maintaining balance and preserving hearing. </p>



<p>It's interesting to note that its complex shape varies among animals. One might think this diversity speaks to the modifications needed for different environments and locomotor behaviors. </p>



<p>Yet, closely related species seem to have more comparable inner ear shapes than those distantly related.</p>



<p>Does this mean neutral (non-adaptive) evolution plays a larger role in shaping the inner ear's morphology than we initially suspected? This latest study on the inner ears of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-mammals-live-depends-more-on-climate-than-human-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diverse group of mammals</a> provides some new hints.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-virtual-3d-models-bring-clarity">Virtual 3D models bring clarity</h2>



<p>In order to better understand the evolution of the inner ear in Afrotheria, an international team of evolutionary biologists and paleontologists, including researchers from the Natural History Museum Vienna, studied the inner ear's shape in Afrotheria. </p>



<p>This group consists of related mammals that drastically differ in their anatomy and habitats: aardvark, elephants, golden moles, hyraxes, rodent-like elephant shrews, and sea cows. </p>



<p>They compared these ear shapes to those of analogous but distantly related <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-geographic-isolation-shaped-global-species-habitat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammals</a>, like anteaters, 'true' moles, rodents, hedgehogs, and dolphins.</p>



<p>The team relied on X-ray microtomography on skulls stored in museum collections to construct virtual 3D models of the inner ear. </p>



<p>The aim was to compare inner ear shapes between Afrotherians and their analogues and to analyze ear shape in relation to habitat and movement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shared-selection-pressure">Shared selection pressure</h2>



<p>"We found that the inner ear shape is more similar between analogous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ontocetus-posti-extinct-walrus-like-mammal-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> than between non-analogous ones, even when the latter share a more recent common ancestor and are therefore more closely related", explains Nicole Grunstra, first author of the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, dolphins and sea cows display greater ear shape similarity due to adaptations to a solely aquatic environment, even though the latter is more closely related to other Afrotherians such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-elephant-day-2024-saving-the-gentle-giants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephants</a> or hyraxes.</p>



<p>The study found similar tendencies among other distantly related species with similar environment or nutrition methods: subterranean species and tree-dwelling ones share similar ear shapes. </p>



<p>"We were also able to show that eco-morphologically similar mammals evolved similar ear shapes as an adaptation to shared ecological niches or locomotion, rather than by chance", interprets senior author Anne Le Maître from Konrad Lorenz Institute (<a href="https://www.kli.ac.at" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KLI</a>).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolving-ears-of-mammals">Evolving ears of mammals</h2>



<p>This research seems to conflict with recent studies on birds, reptiles, and certain mammals, which have questioned the importance of adaptive mechanisms in shaping inner ear variation. </p>



<p>One explanation might be that adaptive differences in ear shape surface more when comparing species with diverse ecological strategies.</p>



<p>Another explanation revolves around the concept of 'evolvability', or the inherent capacity for adaptive evolution. </p>



<p>The mammalian ear, particularly sophisticated among vertebrates, can detect a wider range of sounds, especially high pitches. </p>



<p>The anatomical, genetic, and developmental complexity of the ear potentially widens the range of possible ear shapes that can evolve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adaptations-of-mammals">Adaptations of mammals</h2>



<p>"An increase in genetic and developmental factors of a trait gives natural selection more knobs to turn, which facilitates the evolution of different adaptations," adds co-senior author Philipp Mitteröcker from the <a href="https://www.univie.ac.at/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vienna</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Perhaps the increased evolvability of the ear played a notable part in adaptations to new environments and locomotor behaviors during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mammals-have-evolved-over-66-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammalian evolution</a>.</p>

<p>Spring is a time for blossoms and hay we often associate pollen with allergic reactions -- a cause of sniffles and sneezes. But who would've guessed that tiny pollen spores wield such power over clouds and the overall weather?</p>



<p>It turns out pollen plays a vital role in facilitating the freezing of water in clouds, inciting more precipitation and cloud ice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollen-more-than-meets-the-eye">Pollen: More than meets the eye</h2>



<p>Dr. Jan Kretzschmar, meteorologist and lead author of the study from Leipzig University, alongside co-author Professor Johannes Quaas, Professor of Theoretical Meteorology at Leipzig, decided to take a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pollen-can-actually-change-the-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">closer look</a> at how pollen impacts the weather.</p>



<p>Apparently, pollen enhances ice formation in clouds, even at temperatures between minus 15 and minus 25 degrees Celsius (5°F to -13°F). </p>



<p>Without these ice-nucleating particles (INPs), water in clouds only freezes at temperatures below minus 38 degrees Celsius (-36°F).</p>



<p>“This is supported by laboratory results showing that pollen acts as an ice nucleus, influencing the freezing temperature of water in clouds and promoting precipitation,” says Dr. Kretzschmar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollen-clouds-and-weather-patterns">Pollen, clouds and weather patterns</h2>



<p>Globally, pollen's effect on ice formation might not seem substantial compared to other substances like dust. However, on a regional and seasonal level, pollen's power <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crops-worldwide-are-insufficiently-pollinated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">becomes evident</a>. </p>



<p>We usually experience the pollen onslaught in the spring. Not only do these particles trigger our allergies, but they also rise into the atmosphere, entering cold air layers and stimulating ice formation.</p>



<p>Our tiny hero, pollen, doesn't stay up there for long. Its size restricts it to a short atmospheric tenure. But here's the plot twist: when pollen comes in contact with humid conditions, it ruptures into smaller fragments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These minute particles stick around longer in the air and in large quantities, can penetrate cold atmospheric layers, triggering ice formation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollen-s-influence-on-clouds">Pollen's influence on clouds</h2>



<p>Understanding how pollen impacts weather requires delving into its unique properties and interaction with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric conditions</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Pollen grains possess a rough surface and can absorb moisture, making them remarkably effective as ice-nucleating particles, particularly in certain environmental conditions. </p>



<p>This quality is essential in the phase transition of water from liquid to solid, as the presence of such particles lowers the energy barrier for freezing. </p>



<p>Through this process, pollen effectively accelerates the formation of ice crystals within clouds, an initiation crucial for precipitation development.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Consequently, pollen's interaction with existing cloud constituents helps propagate more extensive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-changing-rainfall-patterns-impact-plants-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">precipitation patterns</a>, making it a pivotal factor in local meteorology during peak pollen periods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-climate-models-nbsp">Implications for climate models&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The revelation that pollen contributes significantly to cloud microphysics presents challenges and opportunities for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-increasingly-unpredictable-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric science</a>. </p>

<p>Seabirds such as penguins and albatrosses have highly sensitive regions in their beaks that could help them locate food, according to a new study from the University of Cambridge.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Birds’ bills are their main tactile interface with the outside world. Tactile bill-tip organs associated with specialized foraging techniques are present in several bird groups, yet remain understudied in most clades,” noted the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nerves-and-receptors-in-seabird-beaks">Nerves and receptors in seabird beaks</h2>



<p>By studying over 350 species of birds, the experts found that seabirds have a high concentration of sensory receptors and nerves at the tips of their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/beak-shape-determined-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beaks</a>. This trait has previously been observed in tactile foragers like ducks. </p>



<p>According to the scientists, this touch-sensitive area may have originated from a common ancestor. However, further research is needed to determine whether this trait serves a specific function in today’s birds.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sensitive-beak-tips-to-assist-in-foraging-nbsp">Sensitive beak-tips to assist in foraging&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Birds use their beaks similarly to how humans and other primates use their hands, interacting with the world around them. Some birds have touch-sensitive beak tips to assist in foraging, but the extent and evolution of this ability have not been well studied.</p>



<p>“Many scientists had assumed most birds had touch-sensitive beaks, but we hadn’t investigated it enough to know whether it’s a common ability, or whether it’s limited to particular families of birds,” said lead author Carla du Toit from Cambridge’s <a href="https://www.esc.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Earth Sciences</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endangered-group-of-seabirds">Endangered group of seabirds</h2>



<p>The large group of seabirds known as Austrodyptornithes - which includes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/albatrosses-put-their-partners-needs-before-their-own/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">albatrosses</a>, petrels, and penguins - has not been well-studied in this context. </p>



<p>Since many species within this group are critically endangered, understanding how they use their beaks to find food could aid in their conservation.</p>



<p>Du Toit and her colleagues from the UK and South Africa conducted a study of 361 modern bird species, examining fossil and skeletal records as well as birds that had been accidentally killed by fishing gear. They focused on the structure of the beaks and how they are connected to nerves and blood vessels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organs-in-the-beaks-of-seabirds">Organs in the beaks of seabirds</h2>



<p>The researchers discovered that albatrosses and penguins possess organs in their beaks containing dense clusters of sensory receptors and nerves. This feature is commonly found in tactile foragers like ducks, but this is the first time it has been observed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-sea-ice-makes-it-harder-for-seabirds-to-find-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seabirds</a>.</p>



<p>“Seabirds aren’t known to be tactile foragers, so it’s surprising to find that they have this organ,” said du Toit. “It’s really exciting when you get to be the first to see something.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-tiny-vibrations-from-prey">Detecting tiny vibrations from prey</h2>



<p>These touch-sensitive beaks might enable seabirds to detect tiny vibrations from potential prey, especially when foraging underwater or at night. Birds with similar abilities are known to use their beaks to detect subtle movements from prey like worms underground.</p>



<p>However, it is also possible that these sensitive regions are a remnant from a common ancestor and may not serve a specific purpose in modern birds, much like certain features found in ostriches and emus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Further research on live birds will be required to determine the precise function of these touch-sensitive areas, which could also shed light on their evolutionary history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-remarkable-discovery-in-seabird-beaks">Remarkable discovery in seabird beaks</h2>



<p>“In humans and other primates, our sensitive hands and fingers allowed us to master a huge range of environments,” said du Toit.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Beaks are analogous to hands in a way, but this is the first time we’ve seen touch-sensitive beaks in seabirds. It’s remarkable that no one has ever really studied this in detail, considering that we all learn about evolution from the beaks of Darwin’s finches in school.”</p>



<p>The researchers noted that the bill-tip organ in Austrodyptornithes may be functionally related to nocturnal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/foraging-habits-of-seabirds-altered-by-turbulent-tidal-flows/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foraging</a> and prey detection under water, or courtship displays involving tactile stimulation of the bill. </p>



<p>“Ancestral state reconstructions fail to reject the hypothesis that the last common ancestor of Austrodyptornithes had a bill-tip organ; thus, tactile foraging may be ancestral for this major extant clade, perhaps retained from a deeper point in crown bird evolutionary history.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers believe that their findings could contribute to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seabirds-need-ocean-wide-protection-to-survive-human-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a> of seabirds. Of the 22 known species of albatross, 15 are at risk of extinction, and two are listed as critically endangered. </p>



<p>One significant threat to albatrosses is commercial longline fishing, which causes about 100,000 bird deaths per year when they get caught in fishing lines and drown.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If scientists can better understand how these birds find their food, it might lead to methods for protecting them.</p>



<p>According to du Toit, if albatrosses and other seabirds are able to detect vibrations from potential prey via their beaks, it could be possible to attach some sort of device to longlines that could repel them, so they are less likely to get caught.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Of course, the bigger threats to birds like albatrosses are climate change, rising ocean temperatures, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-most-endangered-seabirds-are-also-threatened-by-plastic-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic pollution</a> and falling fish stocks, but if there’s a way to reduce the risks to seabirds in even a small way, then that’s incredibly valuable,” du Toit concluded.</p>

<p>According to a new study, females play a vital role in shaping primate bonds. Sometimes, it takes more than just a fruit to win over a primate's heart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-primate-bond-more-than-attraction">Primate bond: More than attraction </h2>



<p>Liesbeth Sterck from the Utrecht University and <a href="https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/prof.+dr.+julia+ostner+/164051.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Julia Ostner</a> from the University of Göttingen have unraveled the mystery behind primate bonds. Their study, published in the journal <em>Evolution and Human Behavior</em>, highlights how females steer the course of primate relationships.</p>



<p>Countless scientific theories have attempted to make sense of why some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-primates-struggle-more-with-extreme-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a> hit it off better with others, but here's the catch - these theories have mostly been male-focused. </p>



<p>The current study, however, suggests that female <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visually-striking-primate-features-ease-tension-and-reduce-conflict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a> may be the crucial architects of these relationships.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-benefits-of-primate-bonds">Benefits of primate bonds</h2>



<p>By studying hundreds of primate cases over the past decades, our researchers propose that these friendships usually evolve when both parties can benefit. "Our findings show that these bonds aren't just about attraction and affection," said Sterck. "They are also strategic."</p>



<p>"Both male and female primates unconsciously seek out these friendships that provide benefits. The benefits can be protection, better access to resources, or securing the survival of their offspring. For evolution to shape these behaviors, it is not needed that they know when or how the bonds pay off."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-dynamic-of-primate-relationships">Changing dynamic of primate relationships</h2>



<p>The nature of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primates-who-are-facially-expressive-make-the-best-leaders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primate</a> bonds can change over the course of time. For females, securing protection for their infants might mean seeking male support.</p>



<p>However, once the offspring become independent, these bonds often dissolve. But if a female repeatedly chooses the same male and he's willing to provide ongoing care, a long-term bond is more likely to form.</p>



<p>"Just like our primate relatives, human bonds often involve a mix of affection and strategic partnership," said Sterck. </p>



<p>"While love and emotional connection are vital, unconsciously there's also an element of mutual benefit, whether it's support, protection, or shared resources."</p>

<p>Delving deeper into the world of primate relationships, another layer unfolds - mutual cooperation, often influenced by kinship ties. Primate societies display a remarkable propensity for supporting relatives, which can significantly boost their social status and survival prospects.</p>



<p>Studies indicate that kin alliances can lead to increased access to resources and a higher likelihood of prevailing in conflicts with rival groups. </p>



<p>Kinship-driven cooperation enhances group cohesion and ensures the prosperity of future generations. This remarkable blend of cooperation and familial ties not only fortifies social structures but also highlights the evolutionary advantages of maintaining family bonds.</p>



<p>"While the drive to form strong bonds may stem from evolutionary advantages, emotions like love and affection kick-start these connections," said Sterck.</p>



<p>"These feelings act as the lubricant, smoothing the way for the actions and behaviors necessary to maintain and deepen these bonds over time."</p>

<p>Over 39 million people could die from antibiotic-resistant infections by 2050, according to a recent study. The research reveals a troubling rise in deaths related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and provides forecasts for its impact over the next few decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-analysis-of-antimicrobial-resistance">Global analysis of antimicrobial resistance</h2>



<p>Conducted by the <a href="https://www.tropicalmedicine.ox.ac.uk/gram" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) Project</a>, the study is the first comprehensive global analysis of antimicrobial resistance trends over time. </p>



<p>The research shows that from 1990 to 2021, more than one million people died each year due to antimicrobial resistance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By 2050, the number of annual deaths directly caused by AMR could rise to 1.91 million, representing a nearly 70% increase compared to 2022.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Furthermore, the overall role of antimicrobial resistance in contributing to deaths is expected to grow significantly, with the number of deaths where AMR plays a role projected to increase from 4.71 million to 8.22 million per year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trends-in-antimicrobial-resistance-deaths">Trends in antimicrobial resistance deaths</h2>



<p>The study highlights that while AMR-related deaths among children under five have halved during this period, there has been a disturbing rise in deaths among those aged 70 and older, increasing by more than 80 percent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This trend is predicted to continue, with the elderly population bearing the brunt of the future AMR burden. By 2050, AMR deaths among people aged 70 and older are expected to more than double, while deaths in children under five will continue to decline globally.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-interventions-are-needed">Urgent interventions are needed</h2>



<p>The authors emphasize the need for urgent interventions to prevent this forecasted surge in AMR-related deaths. These interventions include stronger infection prevention measures, increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-vaccination-reduces-mortality-risk-but-only-for-6-months/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vaccination</a> efforts, reducing inappropriate antibiotic use, and accelerating research into new antibiotics.</p>



<p>Mohsen Naghavi leads the AMR Research Team in the <a href="https://www.healthdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Health Metrics</a> (IHME), University of Washington.</p>



<p>“Antimicrobial medicines are one of the cornerstones of modern healthcare, and increasing resistance to them is a major cause for concern. These findings highlight that AMR has been a significant global health threat for decades and that this threat is growing,” said Naghavi.</p>



<p>“Understanding how trends in AMR deaths have changed over time, and how they are likely to shift in future, is vital to make informed decisions to help save lives.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-antimicrobial-resistance-over-time">Tracking antimicrobial resistance over time</h2>



<p>The study also reveals that while antimicrobial resistance has long been recognized as a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global health</a> challenge, this is the first in-depth analysis to track the historical trends of AMR over time and provide future projections. </p>



<p>The first GRAM study, published in 2022, highlighted the global scale of the issue, revealing that AMR-related deaths in 2019 were higher than those from HIV/AIDS or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/revolutionary-model-predicts-malaria-trends-in-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">malaria</a>.</p>



<p>The new GRAM study analyzed data from 204 countries and territories, covering 22 pathogens, 84 pathogen-drug combinations, and 11 infectious syndromes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The estimates were based on 520 million individual records sourced from hospital data, death records, and antibiotic use data.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-direct-and-indirect-deaths">Direct and indirect deaths  </h2>



<p>Using statistical modeling, the researchers produced estimates of deaths directly caused by AMR and those where AMR played a role. These trends provided projections for AMR's global and regional health impacts from 2022 until 2050.</p>



<p>The analysis reveals that deaths directly caused by AMR rose slightly from 1.06 million in 1990 to 1.14 million in 2021.&nbsp;</p>



<p>During this time, there was a significant age-related shift: deaths among children under five dropped by more than 50%, while deaths in people aged 70 and older increased by 80%.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This rise in older adults' deaths is largely attributed to aging populations and their increased vulnerability to infections.</p>



<p>Certain regions have experienced the highest increases in AMR deaths over the past three decades. These include western sub-Saharan Africa, Tropical Latin America, high-income North America, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-threat-to-older-populations-nbsp">Increasing threat to older populations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Despite advances in reducing AMR deaths in children, infections have become harder to treat when they occur, particularly in older populations. This underscores the importance of further action.</p>



<p>Study co-author Kevin Ikuta is an assistant professor of infectious diseases at the <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Los Angeles</a>.</p>



<p>“The fall in deaths from sepsis and AMR among young children over the past three decades is an incredible achievement,” said Professor Ikuta.</p>



<p>“However, these findings show that while infections have become less common in young children, they have become harder to treat when they occur. Further, the threat to older people from AMR will only increase as populations age.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-alarming-trends-uncovered">Alarming trends uncovered</h2>



<p>The study also reveals alarming trends regarding bacterial pathogens and resistance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Deaths due to methicillin-resistant <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> (MRSA) more than doubled globally from 57,200 in 1990 to 130,000 in 2021.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Among Gram-negative <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-and-imprint-new-era-dna-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a>, carbapenem resistance increased from 127,000 deaths in 1990 to 216,000 in 2021. These increases highlight the need for new antibiotics to combat the most resistant strains.</p>



<p>Future projections indicate that, without significant intervention, AMR deaths will continue to rise steadily, with an estimated 1.91 million annual deaths directly caused by AMR by 2050.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The broader role of AMR in contributing to deaths is expected to affect over 8 million deaths annually by mid-century. Cumulatively, AMR is forecasted to lead to more than 39 million direct deaths and be associated with 169 million deaths between 2025 and 2050.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antimicrobial-resistance-deaths-could-be-avoided">Antimicrobial resistance deaths could be avoided</h2>



<p>The study also suggests that action could avert many of these deaths. Improved infection care and increased access to antibiotics could prevent 92 million deaths between 2025 and 2050.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This would be especially impactful in regions like South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia, where millions of lives could be saved.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Developing new antibiotics targeting Gram-negative bacteria could prevent over 11 million AMR-attributable deaths.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-strategies-are-urgently-needed-nbsp">New strategies are urgently needed&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dr. Stein Emil Vollset, study author from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, stressed the urgency of addressing antimicrobial resistance.</p>



<p>“There has been real progress in tackling AMR, particularly among young children, but our findings indicate more must be done to protect people from this growing global health threat,” said Dr. Vollset.</p>



<p>“By 2050, resistant infections could be involved in some 8 million deaths each year. To prevent this from becoming a deadly reality, we urgently need new strategies.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-challenge-of-antimicrobial-resistance">Growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance</h2>



<p>Despite the progress, the authors note several limitations in their study. A lack of data from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) calls for better data collection and infrastructure to improve the accuracy of future AMR forecasts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, some of the individual records used in the study may contain biases or errors, and limited reporting of AMR data before 2000 may have affected the accuracy of historical estimates.</p>



<p>In a related comment, Professor Samuel Kariuki of the <a href="https://www.kemri.go.ke/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kenya Medical Research Institute</a>, who was not involved in the study, praised the model for effectively assessing the changing trends in AMR mortality. </p>



<p>“These data should drive investments and targeted action towards addressing the growing challenge of AMR in all regions,” concluded Professor Kariuki.</p>

<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

Recent scientific discoveries are revolutionizing our understanding of this peculiar human behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-discovery-in-the-brain">Breakthrough discovery in the brain</h2>



<p>In 2023, Dr. Michael Brecht's team at <a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Humboldt University</a>-<a href="https://www.hu-berlin.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berlin</a> made a major discovery published in the <a href="https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(22)01991-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">journal <em>Neuron</em></a>. <p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. This alerts you to potential insects or parasites on your skin.</p>



<p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-self-tickling-is-impossible">Why self-tickling is impossible</h2>



<p>Your cerebellum acts like a prediction machine, recent findings show. When you move your own hand to touch yourself, your brain generates precise predictions about what you will feel and then cancels out the tickling sensation through neural inhibition.</p>



<p>When someone else tickles you, your brain can't predict their movements, so the full tickling response activates. It's like your brain's way of distinguishing between self and others.</p>

<p>Dr. Konstantina Kilteni's 2025 research, published in <em><a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adt0350" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science Advances</a></em>, reveals another technique: place your hand on the tickler's hand. This allows your brain to partially predict the sensations, reducing the tickling response by up to 90 percent.</p>



<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
