<p>It’s easy to miss the ocean’s smallest inhabitants, yet some play outsized roles in keeping the planet running. One of the most remarkable is <em>Prochlorococcus</em> - a microscopic, single-celled powerhouse so tiny that billions can fit into a single drop of seawater.</p>



<p>The tiny microbes occupy the ocean surface, particularly in tropical and subtropical oceans. They create food using sunlight and carbon dioxide - a process called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-microalgae-show-photosynthesis-is-possible-in-near-darkness/">photosynthesis</a> - and work diligently to sustain much of the ocean.</p>



<p>Now, scientists are concerned. As the Earth warms, recent studies reveal that <em>Prochlorococcus</em> may not be coping with increasing temperatures. And that could have a ripple effect through the whole food chain - from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-at-risk-global-warming-threatens-the-oceans-lifeline/">plankton</a> to fish to whales.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-microbes-power-the-oceans">Tiny microbes power the oceans</h2>



<p><em>Prochlorococcus</em> is not just any microbe. It’s the most common photosynthesizing organism in the ocean. It helps supply food for tiny animals that are eaten by bigger animals, all the way up the food chain. </p>



<p>These microbes also contribute about 5 percent of all the photosynthesis on Earth - meaning they help take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, just like trees do.</p>



<p>More than 75 percent of surface ocean waters are packed with <em>Prochlorococcus</em>. That’s why scientists once thought these microbes would thrive in a warmer world. After all, they already live in the warmest parts of the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-meet-their-limit">Microbes meet their limit</h2>



<p>But it turns out there’s a limit. <em>Prochlorococcus</em> prefers temperatures between 66°F and 86°F (19°C–30°C). Once the water gets warmer than that, things start to fall apart. Cell division slows significantly, and populations drop.</p>



<p>In the warmest parts of the ocean, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-are-rising-faster-than-expected-and-likely-to-accelerate/">temperatures</a> are expected to rise even more in the next 75 years. Climate models predict many areas will go past that upper limit. That could put <em>Prochlorococcus</em> at serious risk in places where it’s always been most common.</p>



<p>The study was led by François Ribalet, an associate research professor of oceanography at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a>.</p>



<p>"For a long time, scientists thought <em>Prochlorococcus</em> was going to do great in the future," said Ribalet. "In the warmest regions, they aren’t doing that well, which means that there is going to be less carbon, less food for the rest of the marine food web."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-microbes-across-oceans">Tracking microbes across oceans</h2>



<p>Over the last 10 years, Ribalet and his team sailed over 150,000 miles and gathered information from nearly 100 research cruises. </p>



<p>They analyzed around 800 billion <em>Prochlorococcus</em>-sized cells. Instead of just growing the microbes in labs, they studied them directly in the ocean using a tool called SeaFlow - a machine that fires a laser through seawater to track tiny cells in real time.</p>



<p>“I had really basic questions,” Ribalet said. “Are they happy when it’s warm? Or are they not happy when it’s warm?”</p>



<p>The team built a model to measure growth and compare conditions like sunlight, nutrients, and temperature. In the end, temperature turned out to be the big factor. Above 86°F (30°C), the microbes’ cell division rate dropped to just one-third of what it was at 66°F (19°C).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missing-defenses-against-heat">Missing defenses against heat</h2>



<p>In tropical waters, nutrients are scarce. The ocean looks clear and blue in those areas because there isn’t much in it. But <em>Prochlorococcus</em> survives there because it is tiny and efficient.</p>



<p>Over millions of years, it has shed unnecessary genes and retained only the ones it absolutely needs. That adaptation helped it live in nutrient-poor water.</p>



<p>But that evolution came with a trade-off: the microbe no longer has the genes to protect itself from heat stress.</p>



<p>“Their burnout temperature is much lower than we thought,” Ribalet said. Earlier climate models expected the microbes to keep growing in warmer water. But now it’s clear they cannot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-another-microbe-steps-in">Another microbe steps in</h2>



<p>Another microbe called <em><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-reshaping-marine-ecosystems-in-the-northeast-atlantic/">Synechococcus</a></em> lives in the same waters. It’s bigger and better at handling heat, but it needs more nutrients.</p>



<p>If <em>Prochlorococcus</em> populations shrink, <em>Synechococcus</em> could become more dominant. Still, it's unclear whether the rest of the food web would adjust.</p>



<p>"If <em>Synechococcus</em> takes over, it’s not a given that other organisms will be able to interact with it the same way they have interacted with <em>Prochlorococcus</em> for millions of years," Ribalet said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-warming-and-productivity">Global warming and productivity </h2>



<p>The researchers looked at different climate scenarios - from mild to severe. In the tropics, a modest increase in temperature could cut <em>Prochlorococcus</em> productivity by 17 percent. In the worst-case scenario, it could drop by 51 percent. </p>



<p>Globally, the declines range from 10 percent to 37 percent, depending on how much the planet warms.</p>



<p>"Their geographic range is going to expand toward the poles, to the north and south," Ribalet said. "They are not going to disappear, but their habitat will shift." That shift could change entire <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-and-habitat-degradation-have-devastated-marine-ecosystems/">ecosystems</a> in the tropics and subtropics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbe-survival-depends-on-diversity">Microbe survival depends on diversity</h2>



<p>At the same time, there are limits to what this study could capture. The team sampled broad areas and could not test every single strain. It is possible that a heat-tolerant version of <em>Prochlorococcus</em> exists out there, just waiting to be discovered.</p>



<p>“This is the simplest explanation for the data we have now,” Ribalet said. “If new evidence of heat-tolerant strains emerges, we would welcome that discovery. It would offer hope for these critical organisms.”</p>



<p>That hope might come. But for now, the ocean’s smallest worker is sending a clear message - it is feeling the heat. And that could mean trouble for the rest of us who depend on a healthy ocean to survive.</p>

Dr. Julian Lilkendey and an international team of dedicated researchers have combined innovative AI technologies with stereo-video technology to study the movements of reef fish in the Red Sea with startling precision.</p>



<p>But how does this marvel work? Well, imagine a camera that can capture the tiniest detail and AI that paints every aspect of a 3D moving image.</p>



<p>This revolutionary technique takes us beyond the conventional two-dimensional observations, allowing for an in-depth study of the reef and its inhabitants. Just as we peel an onion layer by layer, these researchers are peeling back the mysteries of the sea.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-surgeonfish-story">The surgeonfish story</h2>



<p>Diving deeper into this fascinating study, two species of surgeonfish became the stars. The team noticed some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-coral-reef-fish-survive-in-the-worlds-warmest-waters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intriguing behavior</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Brown surgeonfish seemed to prefer feasting on algae that grew on dead corals, while the Yellowtail tang was fond of a more varied palate, munching on algae found on sedimentary rock, coral rubble, and sand.</p>



<p>The researchers didn't stop at just observations. They used this advanced set up to estimate the energy expenditure of these fish as they moved and foraged around their natural habitat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-coral-reef-fish">AI and coral reef fish</h2>



<p>What makes this research possible? AI. Dr. Julian Lilkendey described the advanced technologies used for the study. </p>



<p>The team used YOLOv5 (You Only Look Once version 5), a real-time object detection neural network. Tuned with additional background images from the Red Sea, the AI was able to recognize and classify the fish species.</p>



<p>But the real challenge lay in training the AI model for species recognition. With limited specific training images, the team turned to the citizen science website iNaturalist for publicly accessible photos. The results were spectacular.</p>



<p>Next, they used the DeepSORT (Simple Online and Realtime Tracking with a Deep Association Metric) algorithm for 3D data acquisition. This impressive algorithm generates detailed 3D movement patterns of the fish, even when they sometimes disappear or are obscured by other objects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tales-of-coral-reefs-using-ai">Tales of coral reefs using AI</h2>



<p>All this high-tech research isn't for naught. The findings have given us unique insights into the role of surgeonfish and their importance in maintaining the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-reveal-the-health-of-coral-reefs-in-real-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecological balance of our coral reefs</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The Brown surgeonfish demonstrated specialized feeding behavior, preferring certain algae growing on specific substrates, in contrast to the generalized feeding behavior of the Yellowtail tang," said Dr. Lilkendey.</p>



<p>"Despite their low biomass, both species significantly contribute to reef grazing, using the energy obtained from food with similar efficiency in their movements."</p>



<p>Dr. Lilkendey also noted that changes in the feeding behavior and energy expenditure of surgeonfish could directly impact the health and biodiversity of the entire reef ecosystem.</p>



<p>The sophisticated methodological approach employed by the researchers has significantly enhanced their ability to explore the intricate dynamics of fish behavior and energy flows in aquatic ecosystems. </p>



<p>By utilizing advanced techniques and innovative models, they can analyze various factors influencing fish interactions and energy transfer within their habitats. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>The methods used for the study are not only providing deeper insights into behavioral <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restored-coral-reefs-can-bounce-back-in-just-four-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">patterns</a> but are also facilitating the creation of "Energy Seascapes."</p>

<p>Vultures, much like humans, tend to prefer the comfort and security of familiarity as they age, seeking out predictable routines and long-standing relationships that provide a sense of stability. </p>



<p>This shift towards regularity and consistent social circles reflects a natural inclination to rely on known resources and trusted companions, minimizing risks and conserving energy.</p>



<p>New research published in <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em> sheds light on this phenomenon among Griffon vultures. </p>



<p>The study reveals that young Griffon vultures are far more nomadic and socially adventurous, frequently moving between different sleeping sites and engaging with numerous companions. </p>



<p>This exploratory behavior allows younger vultures to gather critical information about food sources and potential threats, aiding their survival in the unpredictable landscapes they inhabit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-young-vultures-the-nomadic-phase">Young vultures: The Nomadic phase</h2>



<p>“What we found was as they age, their loyalty to certain roost sites increases,” said Noa Pinter-Wollman, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a> and co-author of the study. </p>



<p>“Young vultures check out many different roosts but in middle age, they start going repeatedly to the same places.” </p>



<p>Younger vultures tend to avoid the most popular roosts, possibly feeling intimidated by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/older-blue-tits-have-a-mating-advantage-that-involves-cheating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">older birds</a> or avoiding potential conflict, reminiscent of an avian version of “Hey you kids, get off my lawn.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-middle-age-stronger-bonds">Middle age: Stronger bonds</h2>



<p>The study highlights that, similar to humans, older Griffon vultures form fewer but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-social-bonds-promote-healthy-behaviors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stronger social bonds</a>, prioritizing quality over quantity in their relationships.</p>



<p>As they age, Griffon vultures also establish specific movement routines, preferring to return to the same familiar roosts and consistently associating with the same social circles.</p>



<p>The predictable patterns reflect their desire for stability and the benefits that come with established territories and social structures. This behavior is closely linked to their accumulated knowledge about food resources and environmental conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-patterns-of-griffon-vultures">Life patterns of griffon vultures</h2>



<p>Griffon vultures, scientifically known as <em>Gyps fulvus</em>, inhabit the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and India. With impressive wingspans reaching up to 9 feet, they are much larger than North American turkey vultures and even bigger than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bald-eagles-dont-only-eat-fish-as-prairie-dogs-will-attest/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bald eagles</a>. </p>



<p>Their diet primarily consists of animal carcasses, which are unpredictable and often fleeting. </p>



<p>Roosting sites become vital "information hubs" where vultures can signal to others about food availability, forming friendships that enhance their survival chances.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-griffon-vultures-over-time">Tracking griffon vultures over time</h2>



<p>The researchers aimed to understand how Griffon vultures' movement patterns and social behaviors evolve throughout their lives. </p>



<p>By analyzing GPS data from 142 individually tagged birds in Israel over a 15-year period, they cross-referenced the vultures’ ages with their movement and social interactions at roost sites. </p>



<p>The study revealed that young vultures are highly exploratory, rarely staying in the same place for two consecutive nights.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-exploration-to-familiarity">From exploration to familiarity</h2>



<p>“When they are old, from the age of 10 onward, they no longer have the energy to be ‘out and about’ and return consistently to the same site,” said corresponding author Orr Spiegel from <a href="https://english.tau.ac.il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tel Aviv University</a>. </p>



<p>As vultures aged, their social interactions also shifted, with the strength of their bonds with non-close friends declining. </p>



<p>Older vultures increasingly preferred the company of a few close friends and exhibited more predictable movement patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-behavioral-shifts">Understanding behavioral shifts</h2>



<p>This long-term study, tracking the same vultures over nearly 12 consecutive years, provides insights into behavioral changes in aging birds. </p>



<p>The findings support similar observations in other species, where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genetic-ties-influence-the-social-behavior-of-aging-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aging animals</a> exhibit greater fidelity to familiar sites and routines and become more selective in their social relationships. </p>



<p>These behavioral shifts offer valuable insights into how animal populations navigate their environments and interact with their peers, aiding in developing better <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a> strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-and-future-research">Conservation and future research</h2>



<p>“It looks like they just get set in their ways,” noted Pinter-Wollman. “They’ve gathered information over the years, and they might as well use it. Carcasses are hard to come by, and roosts are information hubs.”</p>



<p>For Griffon vultures, this might involve protecting essential roosting sites and using knowledge of their social dynamics to mitigate threats like poisoning.</p>

<p>Skepticism around the reality of climate change remains a significant global issue, despite an almost unanimous consensus among scientists that human activities are the primary driver of this environmental crisis. </p>



<p>However, a new study suggests that actively revealing the extent of this scientific agreement to the public can effectively change perceptions, promoting greater awareness and strengthening belief in the severity and urgency of climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-perspective">Scientific perspective</h2>



<p>The research, co-led by Bojana Većkalov at the <a href="https://www.uva.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Amsterdam</a> and Sandra Geiger of the <a href="https://www.univie.ac.at/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vienna</a>, finds that communicating the consensus among scientists can clear up misperceptions and bolster beliefs about climate change.</p>



<p>Scientific agreement that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humans are the primary cause of climate change</a> has been robust since the 1980s, with an overwhelming 97% to 99.9% of climate scientists in agreement. </p>



<p>"There is near-universal consensus in the peer-reviewed scientific literature that the climate is changing as a result of human activity," wrote the study authors. </p>



<p>"However, the public often considerably underestimates this consensus, which is evident even in recent data from six European countries (estimates range from 65% in the United Kingdom to 71% in Ireland."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concern-about-the-dangers-of-climate-change">Concern about the dangers of climate change </h2>



<p>Previous research, largely based in the United States, demonstrated that people who read a brief statement highlighting this overwhelming scientific consensus exhibited significantly increased awareness and concern about the reality and dangers of climate change. </p>



<p>This effect was notably stronger compared to those who were exposed to unrelated expert statements, indicating the powerful influence of clear, concise messaging about scientific agreement on public perception.</p>



<p>In response to reading about the 97 percent consensus, people adjusted their perceptions of the scientific consensus, believed more in climate change, and worried more about it.</p>



<p>"However, they did not support public action on climate change more, though other research has found that support for action can be stimulated indirectly by changing how people think and feel about climate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humanity-should-brace-for-catastrophic-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">change</a>.” explained co-lead author Sandra Geiger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-awareness-beyond-borders">Climate awareness beyond borders</h2>



<p>Despite these promising findings, most research on consensus communication has focused on American perceptions. </p>



<p>This study, involving an international team of 46 researchers, expanded the scope by surveying more than 10,500 participants across 27 countries on six continents. </p>



<p>The results confirmed that communicating the scientific consensus on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/science-reporting-can-change-climate-change-beliefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> effectively shifts beliefs globally, not just in the United States.</p>



<p>"These findings hold true across diverse cultures and contexts," added Bojana Većkalov, highlighting the global relevance of consensus messaging. </p>



<p>However, the study also noted that while belief in climate change and concern about its impacts increased, this did not directly translate into greater support for public action against climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crisis-consensus-a-surprising-result">Crisis consensus: A surprising result</h2>



<p>Interestingly, when participants were informed that 88% of climate scientists view <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change as a crisis</a>, this information did not significantly change their beliefs. </p>



<p>Većkalov suggested that the smaller gap between the actual and perceived consensus on the crisis aspect may have limited its impact. </p>



<p>“A smaller gap means people already perceived a high crisis consensus before learning about it, which might have prevented any further changes in beliefs about climate change,” she explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consensus-on-climate-change">Consensus on climate change</h2>



<p>These findings emphasizes the importance of continuing to highlight the scientific consensus on climate change, both in media and everyday conversations. </p>



<p>"In the face of increasing politicization of science and misinformation about climate change, cultivating universal awareness of the scientific consensus will help protect public understanding of the issue," noted Sander van der Linden, the senior author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-collaboration-for-global-impact">Global collaboration for global impact</h2>



<p>The research not only sheds light on the importance of climate change communication but also highlights the value of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-climate-adaptation-lacks-coordination/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global collaboration</a> in behavioral science.</p>



<p>Study co-author Kai Ruggeri, professor of health policy and management at <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health</a>, emphasized the significance of this research in enhancing public understanding.</p>

<p>Recreational drugs have been used for thousands of years. Despite the taboo, many argue that substances like cannabis are safe because they are natural. But recent research adds a new twist to the tale. </p>



<p>According to a French study, people using recreational drugs (such as cannabis and MDMA) face a much higher risk of suffering heart attacks or strokes. That's a pretty cold splash of water on the "natural and safe" argument.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recreational-drugs-and-heart-health">Recreational drugs and heart health</h2>



<p>Researchers meticulously tracked over 1,300 intensive-care patients. The analysis showed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-and-hallucinogen-use-are-at-historically-high-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">those who consumed cannabis</a> alone had almost twice the risk of cardiovascular incidents such as heart attack or stroke.</p>



<p>In this research, everything boils down to THC - the active ingredient in cannabis. THC triggers our body's fight-or-flight response. This also raises our heart rate and blood pressure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over time, this constant state of red alert can damage the heart and increase the risk of life-threatening problems. This study was led by Dr. Raphael Mirailles, a doctor from <a href="https://hopital-lariboisiere.aphp.fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hospital Lariboisiere</a> in Paris.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Recreational drug use was associated with a tripling of the risk of a repeat serious cardiovascular event within one-year. There is an increasing amount of data regarding worst prognosis associated with recreational drug use, not only in cardiac intensive care units but also in conventional intensive care units," said Dr. Mirailles.</p>



<p>"Despite high rate of underreporting of recreational drug use, systematic screening is not recommended by the current guidelines. It might improve risk stratification of patients and personalized care to favor drug withdrawal. Therefore, systemic screening should be considered in intensive care."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recreational-drugs-and-heart-damage">Recreational drugs and heart damage</h2>



<p>Among the different recreational drugs tested, MDMA topped the list with a cardiovascular event risk 4.1 times higher than that of non-drug users. Heroin wasn't far behind at 3.6 times, followed by cannabis close on its heels at 1.8 times the risk.</p>



<p>The study pulled in data from 39 different intensive care units across France, tracking 1,392 patients over a two-week period in April 2021. Of these, 11% tested positive for recreational drug use. </p>

<p>Formed when a large star collapses into such a dense concentration of mass that its gravity prevents even light from escaping its sphere of influence, black holes have long held the fascination of scientists across the globe.</p>



<p>Their indirect effects on the environment, however, offer tantalizing clues to their workings, inviting relentless inquiry. </p>



<p>One such mystery, the X-ray radiation from black holes that's been pursued for answers since the 1970s, has finally been decoded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pursuit-of-black-holes-x-ray-secrets">Pursuit of black holes' x-ray secrets</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.helsinki.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Helsinki</a> have succeeded in something that has been pursued since the 1970s: explaining the X-ray radiation from black hole surroundings. </p>



<p>Through detailed supercomputer simulations, they modeled the interactions between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-surges-of-cosmic-radiation-from-space-directly-linked-to-earthquakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radiation</a>, plasma, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/powerful-magnetic-fields-may-be-key-features-of-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magnetic fields</a> around black holes. </p>



<p>It was found that the chaotic movements, or turbulence, caused by the magnetic fields heat the local plasma and make it radiate. </p>



<p>"The flares in the accretion disks of black holes are like extreme versions of solar flares," highlighting the intense nature of these phenomena," explained Associate Professor Joonas Nättilä, who heads the Computational Plasma Astrophysics research group at the University of Helsinki.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-accretion-disks-and-x-rays">Black holes, accretion disks and x-rays</h2>



<p>Black holes often come with a companion star, forming a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exoplanet-found-in-the-habitable-zone-of-a-binary-star-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">binary star system</a>. </p>



<p>In such an arrangement, the immense gravitational pull of the black hole affects its companion, causing both objects to orbit each other. </p>



<p>Over time, the black hole's gravity exerts a powerful influence, pulling matter away from the companion star. </p>



<p>This captured material slowly spirals inward, forming an accretion disk around the black hole.</p>



<p>The accretion disk, a bright and observable source of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/x-ray-single-atom-captured-by-scientists-for-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X-rays</a>, is generated as the gas flows into the black hole. </p>



<p>Since the 1970s, scientists have hypothesized that these X-rays are produced through the interaction of the local gas and magnetic fields, much like how the sun's magnetic activity leads to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secondary-peak-extreme-geomagnetic-solar-storm-expected-today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar flares</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-effects-in-radiation-plasma-interaction">Quantum effects in radiation-plasma interaction</h2>



<p>The study revealed that the turbulence around black holes is so intense that quantum effects become significant for the plasma dynamics. </p>



<p>The modeled interactions showed that local X-ray radiation can transform into electrons and positrons, which can annihilate back into radiation when they come into contact. </p>



<p>Nättilä explained, "In everyday life, such quantum phenomena where matter suddenly appears in place of extremely bright light are, of course, not seen, but near black holes, they become crucial." </p>



<p>He added, "It took us years to investigate and add to the simulations all quantum phenomena occurring in nature, but ultimately, it was worth it."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-towards-a-clearer-understanding-of-radiation-origins">Towards a clearer understanding of radiation origins</h2>



<p>The study marked a major step forward in identifying the source of X-ray radiation observed from accretion disks. </p>



<p>It unveiled that the plasma around black holes can exist in two distinct equilibrium states, depending on the external radiation field, which can be opaque and hot or transparent and cold. </p>



<p>"The X-ray observations of black hole accretion disks show exactly the same kind of variation between the so-called soft and hard states," Nättilä pointed out. </p>



<p>These findings align with existing X-ray observations, offering a clearer understanding of how black holes impact their surroundings.</p>

<p>Antibiotics, the silent superheroes of modern medicine, save lives during surgeries and shield us from fatal infections. However, more bacteria are developing resistance. That's why scientists are exploring new sources, like the Arctic, for fresh antibiotic candidates.</p>



<p>Our regular soil might just be the knight in shining armor, waiting to rescue us. Soil is the birthplace of about 70% of all currently licensed antibiotics, specifically a group of organisms known as actinobacteria. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-habitats-for-actinobacteria">New habitats for actinobacteria</h2>



<p>Our Earth, the charming little blue-green planet we call home, has yet to reveal all her secrets. Many of her nooks and crannies are still unexplored, including a plethora of untapped habitats for actinobacteria. </p>



<p>And who knows, these little microbes could hold the key to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antimicrobial-resistance-projected-to-kill-10-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">next generation of antibiotics</a>.</p>



<p>Here's the best part: these fresh antibiotics might not annihilate bacteria, but they could reduce their 'virulence' or disease-causing capability. </p>



<p>That’s like turning a fearsome dragon into a harmless lizard. With such antivirulence compounds, it's harder for bacteria to fight back. Plus, these promise fewer nasty side effects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antibiotic-compound-from-arctic">Antibiotic compound from Arctic</h2>



<p>Now, let's meet the brain behind this revolutionary idea. Dr Päivi Tammela of the <a href="https://www.helsinki.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Helsinki</a>, Finland, and her team have developed advanced screening assays to spot these antivirulence and antibacterial metabolites in actinobacteria extracts.</p>



<p>They discovered a compound from the Arctic Ocean that can inhibit the virulence of <em>E. coli</em> without affecting its growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-antibiotic-potential-from-arctic">Testing antibiotic potential from Arctic</h2>



<p>The team targeted a strain of <em>E. coli</em> that wreaks havoc on children under five, causing severe diarrhea. This nasty bacterium sticks to cells in the gut and injects destructive 'virulence factors' into the host cell.</p>



<p>The team then sailed off to the Arctic Sea, to an island called 'Svalbard,' aboard the Norwegian research vessel ‘Kronprins Haakon.’ </p>



<p>They collected invertebrates, isolated actinobacteria from them, and extracted and separated their cells into fractions, testing each one against the menacing <em>E. coli</em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-antibiotic-from-arctic-waters">New antibiotic from Arctic waters</h2>



<p>Researchers found two unknown compounds from the strains <em>Rhodococcus</em> and <em>Kocuria</em> which showed strong antivirulence or antibacterial activity.</p>



<p>“Here we show how advanced screening assays can identify antivirulence and antibacterial metabolites from actinobacteria extracts,” said Dr Tammela<em>.</em></p>



<p>“We discovered a compound that inhibits enteropathogenic&nbsp;<em>E. coli</em>&nbsp;(EPEC) virulence without affecting its growth, and a growth-inhibiting compound, both in actinobacteria from the Arctic Ocean.”</p>



<p>That makes it a promising candidate since <em>E. coli</em> is less likely to evolve <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-increases-threat-antimicrobial-resistance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">resistance</a> against this strain. Dr. Tammela and her team found that the active compound was most likely a phospholipid, a fatty molecule crucial for cell metabolism.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-and-future-antibiotic-development">Arctic and future antibiotic development</h2>



<p>The discovery of these novel compounds presents a paradigm shift in the pursuit of new antibiotics. Arctic Sea microbes show promise as new antibiotic drugs

<p>We're all familiar with cardiovascular disease (CVD), the notorious fiend that continues to claim millions of lives worldwide every year, defying most heart disease tests, and usually creeping up on us over time, making it tough to catch until it's too late.</p>



<p>This group of disorders, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes, affects individuals of every race, color, and creed. Early detection methods can feel elusive, slipping through the fingers of both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-century-of-progress-in-the-fight-against-cardiovascular-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">individuals and healthcare systems</a>.</p>



<p>That is, until now. Hope sparks anew with the recent revelations from a study led by Dr. Paul M. Ridker, director of the <a href="https://www.brighamandwomens.org/heart-and-vascular-center/programs/pollin-womens-heart-center/heart-disease-prevention-research" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention</a> at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.</p>



<p>“We can’t treat what we don’t measure, and we hope these findings move the field closer to identifying even earlier ways to detect and prevent heart disease,” Dr. Ridker noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-shadows-of-our-hearts">Inside the shadows of our hearts</h2>



<p>Under the scanner were blood samples and medical histories from 27,939 women, part of the <a href="https://clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT00000479" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Women’s Health Study</a>.</p>



<p>Tracked over 30 years, 3,662 of these women (originally in their mid-50s) endured significant cardiovascular events like heart attacks, strokes, and related surgeries or deaths.</p>



<p>Three biochemical superheroes -- high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a) -- were the focus of the study.</p>



<p>The goal? To ascertain how each of these markers (alone or collectively) could foresee future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crucial-discoveries-will-improve-cardiovascular-disease-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular events</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heart-disease-test-detects-triple-whammy">Heart disease test detects 'triple whammy'</h2>



<p>The results were eye-opening. Women with the highest LDL levels had a 36% <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-fuels-cardiovascular-deaths-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher risk</a> of heart diseases compared to those with the lowest.</p>



<p>Elevated Lp(a) levels led to a 33% increased risk, and those with the highest CRP levels faced a shocking 70% increased risk.</p>



<p>But the real kicker came when we looked at all three markers together. Women with the highest levels of LDL, Lp(a), and CRP were more than 1.5 times more likely to have a stroke and over 3 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease compared to those with the lowest levels.</p>



<p>It really seems like the saying, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts," rings true here!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-both-sexes">Implications for both sexes</h2>



<p>Integrating CRP with cholesterol levels unravels a more detailed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/depression-and-cardiovascular-diseases-are-genetically-linked/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular risk profile</a>, accounting for the intertwined effects of inflammation and lipid levels on heart health.</p>



<p>The researchers note that while only women were assessed in this study, they would expect to find similar results in men.</p>



<p>“In recent years, we’ve learned more about how increased levels of inflammation can interact with lipids to compound cardiovascular disease risks,” said Ahmed A.K. Hasan, M.D., Ph.D., a medical officer and program director at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (<a href="https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHLBI</a>).<strong> </strong>“This helps explain why lower levels are often better.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inflammation-and-lipids">Inflammation and lipids</h2>

<p>This inflammatory reaction can create a hyperinflammatory environment, making it easier for plaques to grow and possibly rupture, which can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-worsens-cardiovascular-health-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lead to heart problems</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-life-changes-from-heart-disease-test">Early life changes from heart disease test</h2>



<p>To effectively tackle cardiovascular disease, catching it early and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-diet-may-save-your-life-six-key-foods-lower-the-risk-of-heart-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">taking preventive steps is key</a>. This study highlights the importance of primary prevention strategies like staying active, eating a heart-healthy diet, managing stress, and quitting smoking.</p>



<p>For those at higher risk, extra measures such as cholesterol-lowering meds and anti-inflammatory treatments might be needed.</p>

<p>Earth's climate is intricately connected to the movement of ocean currents, which act as the planet's natural thermostat by regulating temperatures and redistributing heat. </p>



<p>Recent scientific findings reveal the significant and often underestimated role of the interplay between Atlantic and Arctic waters in maintaining long-term climate stability through the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). </p>



<p>This crucial oceanic system functions like a massive conveyor belt, redistributing warm water from the tropics to the northern latitudes and returning cold water south, effectively balancing global temperatures. As a result, regions like Northern Europe, including the UK, enjoy milder climates compared to other locations at similar latitudes.</p>



<p>By examining extensive ocean data spanning from 1979 to 2021, scientists have gained crucial insights into how these waters mix, interact, and drive one of Earth's most vital climate-regulating mechanisms. </p>



<p>The findings hold significant implications for our understanding of global warming and future climate predictions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-making-waves-in-ocean-research">Making waves in ocean research</h2>



<p>In an international collaboration, researchers from the <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Southampton</a>, the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, the National Oceanography Centre, and <a href="https://www.su.se/cmlink/stockholm-university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockholm University</a> analyzed ocean data from 1979 to 2021.</p>



<p>The goal was to comprehend how the intermixing of Atlantic and Arctic waters supports the AMOC.</p>



<p>Regulating our planet's temperature, the AMOC is akin to a colossal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-deja-vu-oceans-may-slow-down-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean conveyor belt</a>. It shuttles warm water from the tropics to the north and ferries cold water south, evenly distributing heat globally. </p>



<p>This mechanism ensures Northern Europe, the UK included, enjoys milder climates than other locations at the same latitude.</p>



<p>"The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a key role in the global climate. The near-surface branch of the AMOC (upper limb) transports heat and salt northwards from the Equator, which helps to offset the atmospheric cooling at mid-latitudes (particularly central Europe, Scandinavia), moderating regional climate," noted the study authors. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atlantic-arctic-water-mixing-and-climate">Atlantic-Arctic water mixing and climate</h2>



<p>The researchers established that the lower limb of the AMOC is composed of 72% Atlantic waters and 28% Arctic waters. These waters reside in the deep, cold, dense part of this "conveyor belt," flowing southward in the Atlantic Ocean.</p>



<p>“As warm water reaches the cooler regions of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-warming-triggers-rising-north-atlantic-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Atlantic</a>, it loses heat to the atmosphere, becomes denser, and sinks to great depths," explained study lead author Dr.  Dipanjan Dey.</p>



<p>"While some of this dense water immediately returns south, much of it travels northward, where it mixes with colder, fresher Arctic waters in regions like the Denmark Strait. This mixing process makes the water even denser before flowing southward, contributing to the AMOC's strength.”</p>



<p>The experts estimated that the mixing of Atlantic and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-ocean-warming-four-times-faster-than-global-average/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic waters</a> is responsible for 33% of the transformation of warm, salty water into colder, fresher, and denser water, while 67% is attributed to interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-circulation-and-climate">Ocean circulation and climate</h2>



<p>The breakthrough study significantly challenges previous assumptions that mainly focused on heat loss in specific areas, overlooking the critical role of Atlantic-Arctic water mixing.</p>



<p>The findings allow us to better understand the complex relationship between climate, ocean circulation, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>.</p>



<p>Study co-author Professor Robert Marsh noted that the increased stratification of water due to ocean surface warming reduces the crucial mixing between Atlantic and Arctic waters. This weakening can lead to an overall slowdown of the circulation, resulting in climatic ramifications globally.</p>



<p>The repercussions of a weaker, shallower AMOC would be profound. The ripple effects would lead to colder temperatures in Northern Europe, more rapid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cost-coastal-cities-over-1-trillion-in-damages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea level rise</a> along the eastern coast of the United States, and accelerated climate change due to a shortened carbon dioxide retention time in the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-future-climate-scenarios">Predicting future climate scenarios</h2>



<p>Dr. Dey emphasized the importance of accurately representing these water mixing processes in climate models for better prediction of future climate scenarios.</p>



<p>He further noted the urgency of addressing global warming to avoid potential tipping points, where the circulation could significantly slow down, or even collapse.</p>



<p>The research offers us a fresh perspective - underlining the complex interplay between our climate and global ocean circulation processes, and the vital need to mitigate global warming.</p>

<p>Using observations from a NASA suborbital rocket, an international team of scientists has, for the first time, successfully measured a planet-wide electric field that is as fundamental to Earth as gravity and magnetic fields.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This electric field, known as the ambipolar electric field, was first hypothesized over 60 years ago as a driving force behind the way our planet’s atmosphere escapes above the North and South Poles.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confirmation-of-the-electric-field">Confirmation of the electric field</h2>



<p>The measurements from the rocket, part of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>’s Endurance mission, have now confirmed the existence of the ambipolar field, quantified its strength, and revealed its role in driving atmospheric escape and shaping the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-rocket-launch-ripped-a-hole-in-earths-ionosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ionosphere</a> -- a crucial layer of the upper atmosphere.</p>

<p>Understanding the intricate movements and evolution of Earth’s atmosphere not only sheds light on our planet’s history but also provides valuable insights into the characteristics of other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-planet-discovered-with-an-ocean-not-far-from-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planets</a>, helping to determine which might be capable of supporting life.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-ionosphere">Understanding the ionosphere</h2>



<p>The ionosphere is a layer in Earth's upper atmosphere, sitting about 30 miles (48 kilometers) to 600 miles (965 kilometers) above the surface. It's filled with a bunch of ionized particles, mainly electrons and ions, created when ultraviolet and X-ray radiation from the Sun zaps atmospheric gases.</p>



<p>This ionization forms charged layers that are super important for reflecting and transmitting radio waves, which we rely on for long-distance radio communication and navigation systems.</p>



<p>Instead of being a uniform layer, the ionosphere is a dynamic and complex structure, with varying levels of ionization that shift with solar activity and the time of day.</p>



<p>During the day, solar radiation ramps up ionization, creating stronger and more reflective layers, while at night, with less solar activity, it becomes less ionized and weaker.</p>



<p>These changes can affect the quality and range of radio signals, impacting everything from satellite communications to GPS systems.</p>



<p>Understanding how the ionosphere behaves is key to improving communication technologies and predicting space weather events that can mess with electronic systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysterious-polar-wind">Mysterious polar wind</h2>



<p>Since the late 1960s, spacecraft flying over Earth’s poles have detected streams of particles flowing from our atmosphere into space, a phenomenon known as “polar wind.” This outflow had been predicted by theorists, prompting further research to understand its underlying causes.</p>



<p>Some atmospheric outflow was expected; intense, unfiltered sunlight can cause particles in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-atmosphere-is-expanding-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a> to escape into space, much like steam rising from boiling water.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the observed polar wind was puzzling because many of the particles within it were cold and showed no signs of heating - yet they were traveling at supersonic speeds.</p>



<p>“Something had to be drawing these particles out of the atmosphere,” explained Glyn Collinson, principal investigator of the Endurance mission at NASA’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a> in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the paper. Scientists suspected that an undiscovered electric field might be responsible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-endurance-mission-nbsp-nbsp">The Endurance mission<strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>This hypothetical electric field, generated at the subatomic scale, was believed to be incredibly weak, with effects that could only be detected over vast distances. </p>



<p>For decades, detecting it was beyond the capabilities of existing technology. In 2016, Collinson and his team began developing a new instrument designed to measure Earth’s ambipolar field.</p>



<p>The team determined that their instruments and experimental design were best suited for a suborbital rocket flight launched from the Arctic. </p>



<p>In homage to the ship that carried Ernest Shackleton on his famous 1914 Antarctic expedition, the team named their mission Endurance. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flying-through-the-polar-wind">Flying through the polar wind</h2>



<p>The rocket headed to Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago just a few hundred miles from the North Pole, which houses the world’s northernmost rocket range.</p>



<p>“Svalbard is the only rocket range in the world where you can fly through the polar wind and make the measurements we needed,” said Suzie Imber, a space physicist at the <a href="https://le.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leicester</a>, UK, and co-author of the paper.</p>



<p>On May 11, 2022, the Endurance mission launched, reaching an altitude of 477.23 miles (768.03 kilometers) before splashing down 19 minutes later in the Greenland Sea.</p>



<p>Throughout its 322-mile altitude range, Endurance measured a change in electric potential of just 0.55 volts.</p>



<p>“A half a volt is almost nothing -- it’s only about as strong as a watch battery,” Collinson said. “But that’s just the right amount to explain the polar wind.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-outward-force-of-the-electric-field-nbsp">Outward force of the electric field<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The most abundant particles in the polar wind, hydrogen ions, experience an outward force from this electric field that is 10.6 times stronger than gravity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“That’s more than enough to counter gravity - in fact, it’s enough to launch them upwards into space at supersonic speeds,” added Alex Glocer, Endurance project scientist at NASA Goddard and co-author of the paper.</p>



<p>Heavier particles also receive a boost. For instance, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-ancient-breath-study-links-atmospheric-oxygen-and-mantle-chemistry/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxygen</a> ions at that altitude, when exposed to this half-a-volt field, effectively weigh half as much.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Overall, the team found that the ambipolar field increases the “scale height” of the ionosphere by 271%, meaning the ionosphere remains denser at greater heights than it would without the field. “It’s like this conveyor belt, lifting the atmosphere up into space,” Collinson explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study-nbsp">Broader implications of the study<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The discovery by the Endurance mission has opened numerous new avenues for research. As a fundamental energy field of our planet, alongside <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unraveling-gravity-quantum-nature-entanglement-mechanics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravity</a> and magnetism, the ambipolar field may have continuously influenced the evolution of our atmosphere in ways that can now be explored.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Because this field is generated by the internal dynamics of an atmosphere, similar electric fields are likely to exist on other planets, such as Venus and Mars.</p>



<p>“Any planet with an atmosphere should have an ambipolar field. Now that we’ve finally measured it, we can begin learning how it’s shaped our planet as well as others over time,” Collinson concluded.</p>

<p>Have you ever wondered if animals call each other by names? In human society, names play a vital role in social interaction. Going beyond humans, there are only a few species known to demonstrate this advanced cognitive ability. One of them are Marmoset Monkeys, whose communication skills will surprise you.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-names-a-human-trait-or-is-it">Identifying names: A human trait, or is it?</h2>



<p>For the longest time, the ability to use vocal labels or "names" for others was seen as a unique characteristic of humans and a select few species, namely dolphins and elephants. </p>



<p>Isn't it intriguing how such an ability was thought to be absent, even among our closest evolutionary relatives, the primates?</p>



<p>Our understanding, however, was set to be turned on its head by an astonishing study from the <a href="https://en.huji.ac.il" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hebrew University</a>. </p>



<p>Led by Dr. David Omer from the Safra Center for Brain Sciences (<a href="https://elsc.huji.ac.il/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ELSC</a>), a team of researchers uncovered something truly remarkable. </p>



<p>Lo and behold, the Marmoset Monkeys had been keeping a secret from us; their use of specific vocal calls, termed as "phee-calls", to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visually-striking-primate-features-ease-tension-and-reduce-conflict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">identify each other</a>.</p>



<p>They found out this incredible fact when graduate student Guy Oren recorded natural conversations between pairs of marmosets and interactions between monkeys and a computer system. </p>



<p>Evidently, these monkeys address each other using their phee-calls, similar to how we might call our friends. What's amazing is that the marmosets can determine if a call is meant for them, responding more accurately when addressed directly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-communication-patterns-and-monkeys">Communication patterns and monkeys</h2>



<p>According to Dr. Omer, these findings indicate a complex social communication system among marmoset monkeys. It turns out these calls serve more than just for self-localization; marmosets use them for pinpointing specific individuals.</p>



<p>What's more, these vocal labels also seem to have a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-monkeys-are-much-smarter-than-we-thought-they-were/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social learning component</a>. Even adult marmosets not related by blood tend to mimic vocal labels and dialect from their group members. </p>



<p>This resemblance to human language and dialects raises fascinating questions about the evolution of social communication.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monkey-communication-and-human-language">Monkey communication and human language</h2>



<p>These findings about marmoset monkeys bring a fresh perspective to the study of human language evolution. </p>



<p>The complex brain mechanisms allowing marmosets to label others could be similar to the ones that led to language in humans.</p>



<p>Moreover, the researchers suggest that this evolved vocal labelling ability might have helped marmosets keep their social bonds intact in dense rainforest habitats, where visibility can often be an issue.</p>

<p>“Marmosets live in small monogamous family groups and take care of their young together, much like humans do,” says Omer. </p>



<p>“These similarities suggest that they faced comparable evolutionary social challenges to our early pre-linguistic ancestors, which might have led them to develop similar communicating methods.”</p>

They shed new light on the importance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronauts-microbiome-health-is-crucial-to-future-space-exploration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbiome</a> symbiosis to health and how these Earth-evolved relationships may be vulnerable to the stresses of space," said Professor Nicholas Brereton of UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science.</p>

<p>Scientists from across the globe recently united in southern Chile to discuss the alarming patterns of Antarctica's ice loss during the 11th Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research conference.</p>



<p>The gathering brought together over 1,400 academics, researchers, and scientists from a wide array of fields. The meeting was dominated by a pressing and urgent concern: the rapid transformation of Antarctica’s environment.</p>



<p>The consensus among these experts was clear and unsettling. Antarctica is changing at an unprecedented speed, with potentially catastrophic consequences for global sea levels and climate stability.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerns-about-an-unpredictable-future">Concerns about an unpredictable future</h2>



<p>The real worry among scientists is whether these alarming events signal that Antarctica has reached a critical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-melting-new-tipping-point-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tipping point</a> - a stage of accelerated and potentially irreversible sea ice loss.</p>

<p>"There's uncertainty about whether the current observations indicate a temporary dip or a downward plunge (of sea ice)," said Keller.</p>

<p>Dating back 21,000 years, these ancient records reveal evidence of similar periods of accelerated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/this-natural-process-is-making-antarcticas-ice-melt-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice melt</a> in the past. </p>



<p>Weber emphasized that this pattern of recurring, rapid ice mass loss has been observed at least eight times throughout Earth's history, with each instance triggering a prolonged phase of ice loss lasting several centuries. </p>



<p>These prolonged episodes of melting have historically resulted in significant and lasting rises in global sea levels, highlighting the potential for a similar impact in the coming decades.</p>

<p>Even with these sobering facts and the growing evidence of accelerated ice loss, scientists maintain that all hope is not lost. There is still a window of opportunity to prevent the worst-case scenarios from becoming reality.</p>



<p>Experts agree that significant reductions in fossil fuel emissions can slow down or even halt the rapid changes occurring in Antarctica. </p>



<p>By taking decisive action to curb greenhouse gases, humanity can still mitigate the devastating effects of climate change and help stabilize the fragile Antarctic environment.</p>



<p>"If we keep emissions low, we can stop this eventually. If we keep them high, we have a runaway situation and we cannot do anything," said Weber.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emissions-and-historical-climate-patterns">Emissions and historical climate patterns</h2>



<p>Mathieu Casado, a paleoclimate and polar meteorologist at France's Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory, said data from dozens of ice cores has allowed him to reconstruct temperature patterns in Antarctica dating back 800,000 years.</p>



<p>Casado's research showed that the temperature rise of the last 50 years was clearly outside natural variability, highlighting the role of industry in producing carbon emissions that drive climate change.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>

<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
