<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>About 66 million years ago, a massive asteroid slammed into Earth after traveling 2.7 billion miles, causing a mass extinction during the Cretaceous period the killed the dinosaurs. After ruling the planet for roughly 165 million years, the dinosaurs were gone.</p>



<p>But where did this asteroid come from? This age-old question has intrigued scientists for years.</p>



<p>The recent discovery of a rare earth element called ruthenium offers some exciting clues. The study suggests that the deadly asteroid that caused the dinosaur extinction might have originated from a region far beyond Jupiter, called the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eris-and-makemake-icy-dwarf-planets-in-our-own-solar-system-may-support-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kuiper Belt</a>.</p>



<p>This discovery has the scientific community buzzing and could really change how we view Earth's history and the potential cosmic threats we face.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rocks-scientists-and-ruthenium">Rocks, scientists, and ruthenium</h2>



<p>Mario Fischer-Godde, an esteemed geochemist from the <a href="https://portal.uni-koeln.de/en/uoc-home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cologne</a>, leads this pioneering research. It was his relentless inquisitiveness that led to a new understanding of the origins of the catastrophic asteroid.</p>



<p>Fischer-Godde's research centers around the analysis of ruthenium isotopes discovered in sediment samples from the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.</p>



<p>His findings challenge the long-standing belief that the asteroid, known as the Chicxulub impactor, originated from the inner regions of the asteroid belt.</p>

<p>This rare metal, usually found in tiny amounts on Earth and in certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-impact-crater-dates-back-to-the-end-of-the-dinosaurs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">types of asteroids</a>, provided essential clues that helped scientists track down the origins of the killer asteroid that changed the course of Earth's history.</p>



<p>Its unique properties and scarcity make it a really interesting topic to explore. It's amazing how something so obscure in our everyday lives could help us unlock such huge mysteries, shedding light on the cosmic events that have shaped our planet and even life itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chicxulub-impact">Chicxulub impact</h2>



<p>When that dinosaur-killing asteroid, around 6 to 9 miles wide, hit Earth about 66 million years ago, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nuclear-winter-dinosaurs-were-likely-killed-by-dust/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">it was a total disaster</a>. </p>



<p>The impact released an insane amount of energy, like billions of atomic bombs, leading to massive fires, tsunamis, and a thick cloud of dust that blocked out sunlight for months.</p>



<p>The fallout was brutal, causing mass extinction -- including our dinosaur pals, who had roamed the Earth for over 165 million years -- and leaving a huge crater in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucat%C3%A1n_Peninsula" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula</a> known as the Chicxulub crater.</p>



<p>This crater, about 150 kilometers wide, is a powerful reminder of that catastrophic event that changed life as we know it.</p>



<p>The aftermath sparked a series of environmental shifts that eventually allowed mammals, and later humans, to rise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dinosaur-extinction-and-the-chicxulub-crater">Dinosaur extinction and the Chicxulub crater</h2>



<p>How did Fischer-Godde figure out that the Chicxulub impactor probably came from the Kuiper Belt instead of being a comet? </p>



<p>His detailed research looked at the asteroid's unique makeup, especially focusing on the presence of ruthenium isotopes.</p>



<p>This finding was a big deal since it provided solid evidence against earlier theories that suggested a comet was behind the impact -- an idea based on simulations done just last year.</p>



<p>By analyzing the isotopic ratios and comparing them to known celestial bodies, Fischer-Godde made a strong case that the Chicxulub impactor's characteristics fit better with asteroids from the Kuiper Belt, changing how we think about the origins of this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-impact-sparked-two-years-of-darkness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">catastrophic event</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-asteroids-and-planetary-defense">Asteroids and planetary defense</h2>



<p>This game-changing discovery by Fischer-Godde is not just about unraveling the mysteries of the past, but also about anticipating the future.</p>



<p>Understanding the origins of the Chicxulub impactor is key in preparing for similar cosmic threats, especially considering that even a rare encounter with a C-type asteroid could spell disaster.</p>



<p>"If we find that earlier mass extinction events could also be related to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-ryugu-holds-clues-about-bombardment-in-the-early-solar-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">C-type asteroid</a> impacts, then… if there's ever going to be a C-type asteroid on an Earth-crossing orbit, we have to be very careful," Fischer-Godde cautions.</p>

Cosmic equivalent of a 'blindfolded full-court shot' caused the dinosaur extinction

About 66 million years ago, a massive asteroid slammed into...

<p>Upon the momentous collision of NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft with an asteroid moon named Dimorphos in 2022, the course of the celestial body's evolution took an unexpected turn. </p>



<p>The impact left such a profound mark that the moon was rendered significantly deformed, creating a significant crater and reshaping its form to the point of derailment from its original path. </p>



<p>Scientists believe that the newly restructured Dimorphos might now be undergoing a chaotic "tumble" in its attempts to regain gravitational balance with its parent asteroid, Didymos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-dart-impact-study">The DART impact study</h2>



<p>“For the most part, our original pre-impact predictions about how DART would change the way Didymos and its moon move in space were correct,” said Derek Richardson, a professor of astronomy at the <a href="https://umd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Maryland</a>.</p>



<p>“But there are some unexpected findings that help provide a better picture of how asteroids and other small bodies form and evolve over time.” </p>



<p>In a recent study published in the <em>Planetary Science Journal</em>, Richardson and his team  describe significant post-impact observations and possible implications for future asteroid research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dimorphos-from-hamburger-to-football">Dimorphos: From hamburger to football</h2>



<p>One of the biggest surprises was the degree to which the DART impact transformed the shape of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-rocks-nasa-dart-asteroid-deflection-mission-may-impact-mars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dimorphos</a>. </p>



<p>According to Richardson, the asteroid moon, originally oblate like a hamburger, assumed a more prolate figure, comparable to a stretched football, after the collision. </p>



<p>“We were expecting Dimorphos to be prolate pre-impact simply because that’s generally how we believed the central body of a moon would gradually accumulate material that’s been shed off a primary body like Didymos,” Richardson explained. </p>



<p>“But this result contradicts that idea and indicates that something more complex is at work here. Furthermore, the impact-induced change in Dimorphos’ shape likely changed how it interacts with Didymos.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ripple-effects-of-the-dart-impact">Ripple effects of the DART impact</h2>



<p>Richardson noted that despite the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-will-crash-a-spacecraft-into-an-asteroid-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DART spacecraft impacting only the moon</a>, the moon and the main asteroid remain interlinked through gravity.</p>



<p>The debris scattered by the impact of the spacecraft disturbed the equilibrium between the moon and the asteroid, resulting in a shorter orbit of Dimorphos around Didymos.</p>



<p>Interestingly, Didymos' shape remained unchanged, suggesting that the larger asteroid's body is sturdy and rigid enough to retain its shape even after losing mass to create its moon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-asteroid-deflection">The future of asteroid deflection </h2>



<p>The results of the DART impact hold significant ramifications for future exploration. The European Space Agency has planned a follow-up mission to the Didymos system for October 2024.</p>



<p>“Originally, Dimorphos was probably in a very relaxed state and had one side pointing toward the main body, Didymos, just like how Earth’s moon always has one face pointing toward our planet,” Richardson noted. </p>



<p>“Now, it’s knocked out of alignment, which means it may wobble back and forth in its orientation. Dimorphos might also be ‘tumbling,’ meaning that we may have caused it to rotate chaotically and unpredictably.”</p>



<p>The team is now waiting to find out when the ejected debris will clear from the system and when Dimorphos will regain its previous stability. </p>



<p>“It could take a hundred years to see noticeable changes in the system, but it’s only been a few years since the impact. Learning about how long it takes Dimorphos to regain its stability tells us important things about its internal structure, which in turn informs future attempts to deflect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-algorithm-may-reveal-hundreds-of-potentially-hazardous-asteroids/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hazardous asteroids</a>,” said Richardson.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-long-term-defense-strategy">A long-term defense strategy</h2>



<p>Richardson and his team hope that <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/hera-will-investigate-the-aftermath-of-the-dart-asteroid-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hera</a>, the European Space Agency’s mission, will provide more information about DART’s impact. </p>



<p>By late 2026, Hera will arrive at the binary asteroid system containing Dimorphos and Didymos to assess the internal properties of both asteroids for the first time. This will provide a more detailed analysis of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dart-mission-released-boulders-with-the-explosive-capacity-of-an-atomic-bomb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DART mission</a> and its implications for the future.</p>



<p>“DART gave us insight into complicated gravitational physics that you can’t do in a lab, and all of this research helps us calibrate our efforts to defend Earth in the event of an actual threat,” said Richardson.</p>



<p>“There’s a nonzero chance that an asteroid or comet will approach and endanger the planet. Now, we have an additional line of defense against these kinds of external threats.”</p>

<p>Earth's ocean floors represent one of the least explored frontiers on our planet. Despite significant technological advancements, mapping these vast underwater landscapes poses considerable challenges, primarily due to the high costs and complexities involved.</p>



<p>Traditional methods often depend on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), which, while effective, face limitations imposed by weather conditions and ocean depths.</p>



<p>In an exciting development, a team of researchers in Australia has introduced an innovative solution to these obstacles. They're harnessing the unique skills of endangered Australian sea lions to carry cameras, offering fresh insights into the enigmatic habitats of the seabed.</p>



<p>By leveraging the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-flu-is-killing-thousands-of-seals-and-sea-lions-globally/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural behavior of these animals</a>, scientists can gain a new perspective on underwater ecosystems that was previously unattainable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-behind-the-initiative">Brain behind the initiative</h2>



<p>Nathan Angelakis, a PhD student at <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The University of Adelaide</a> and The South Australian Research and Development Institute (<a href="https://pir.sa.gov.au/research" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SARDI</a>), is making significant strides in marine science research.</p>



<p>His team's recent publication in <em>Frontiers in Marine Science</em> illustrates how collaborating with marine mammals can provide us with invaluable insights into ocean exploration.</p>



<p>“Using animal-borne video and movement data from a benthic predator is a really effective way of mapping diverse benthic habitats across large areas of the seabed,” Angelakis explained.</p>



<p>“These data are useful both for mapping critical habitats for an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/steller-sea-lions-threatened-by-rising-mercury-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">endangered species</a> such as the Australian sea lion, and more broadly, for mapping unexplored areas of the seabed.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-ocean-floor-is-difficult">Mapping the ocean floor is difficult</h2>



<p>The seabed is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vital hub of biological diversity</a>. It supports a wide array of marine life and enhances the overall biodiversity of our entire planet.</p>



<p>However, what we actually know and understand about these unique habitats is still very far from a complete record, primarily due to the challenges associated with exploring them.</p>



<p>It's often said that we know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars than we do about the ocean floor. While this might sound surprising, it is 100% true!</p>



<p>This disappointing fact reflects the reality of our current deep sea exploration capabilities and the challenges involved in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mystery-deepens-over-origin-of-thousands-of-massive-holes-on-the-ocean-floor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studying the deep ocean</a>.</p>



<p>Traditional seabed mapping techniques, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), are effective but often costly and face significant difficulties in the deep ocean's extreme conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-lions-and-seabeds">Sea lions and seabeds</h2>



<p>To address these obstacles, Angelakis and his team have turned their focus to the Australian sea lion (<em>Neophoca cinerea</em>), an endangered species found along Australia’s southern and western coasts.</p>



<p>By equipping agile sea lions with lightweight cameras and tracking devices, they successfully gathered crucial data on seabeds and marine habitats across the continental shelf, revealing previously hidden <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/ocean-floor-features-you-should-know-about/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regions of the ocean floor</a>.</p>



<p>The study observed eight adult female Australian sea lions, with cameras and GPS tracking instruments attached to them that weighed less than 1% of their body weight.</p>



<p>“We deployed the instruments on adult females so we could recover the equipment a few days later when they returned to land to nurse their pups,” Angelakis explained. </p>



<p>“We used satellite-linked GPS loggers on the sea lions, which meant we could track their position in real-time and knew when they had returned to the colony.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-data-goldmine-from-sea-lions-roaming-seabeds">Data goldmine from sea lions roaming seabeds</h2>



<p>Over two to three days, these marine "scientists" captured 89 hours of footage – a goldmine for researchers. </p>



<p>It covered a range of benthic habitats encountered during their dives, including macroalgae reefs, invertebrate boulder fields, and bare sand areas, to name a few.</p>



<p>This diversity of environments provided a wealth of data, granting researchers the ability to map <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-discovery-deep-ocean-no-photosynthesis-baffles-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">critical habitats on the continental shelf</a>.</p>



<p>“The sea lions from both locations covered quite broad areas around the colonies. In our calculations, we kept the area in which we predicted habitats small to maximize the precision of our predictions,” Angelakis enthused.</p>



<p>“This allowed us to model benthic habitats across more than 5,000 square km of the continental shelf.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-continental-shelf">Mapping the continental shelf</h2>



<p>One breakthrough of this research is the ability to predict large habitat areas across the southern Australia continental shelf.</p>



<p>The team used machine learning models incorporating decades’ worth of oceanographic and environmental data, including temperature trends, ocean currents, and nutrient levels.</p>



<p>This approach allowed the team to model benthic habitats across more than 5,000 square kilometers (1,930 square miles) of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-fire-ice-unleashes-deep-methane-from-beneath-the-seafloor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">continental shelf</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-australian-sea-lions-neophoca-cinerea">Preserving Australian sea lions (<em>Neophoca cinerea)</em></h2>



<p>Besides revealing the unseen benthic habitats, the study also provided crucial information about the endangered Australian sea lion. Over the past four decades, their population has dwindled by more than 60%, making this study invaluable to their conservation efforts.</p>



<p>Australian sea lions are among the rarest and most endangered sea lion species. Their distinctive appearance makes them easy to identify. Males exhibit a rich dark brown coat, while females and juveniles have a lighter, creamy-gray fur.</p>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/california-sea-lions-are-getting-bigger-as-their-population-increases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">medium-sized marine mammals</a> showcase notable size differences, with males reaching lengths of up to 8 feet and weighing around 660 pounds, whereas females typically measure about 6 feet and weigh around 220 pounds.</p>



<p>What sets Australian sea lions apart is their unique breeding cycle, occurring every 17 to 18 months, unlike the annual cycles of most other sea lion species. Additionally, these highly social creatures are often observed in groups, engaging in playful behaviors in and out of the water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-lions-seabeds-and-future-research">Sea lions, seabeds, and future research</h2>



<p>The inclusion of Australian sea lions in seabed mapping marks an important breakthrough in marine exploration. </p>



<p>Utilizing animal-borne cameras to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-fishing-method-of-bottom-trawling-harms-both-the-ocean-and-the-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">map seabed habitats</a> not only provides cost-effective solutions but also extends our reach to areas inaccessible by traditional equipment.</p>



<p>As Angelakis and his team have shown, collaborating with animals in scientific research can lead to discoveries that would otherwise remain veiled.</p>



<p>By viewing the ocean through the eyes of a predator, we gain a renewed appreciation for the creatures that inhabit them and deepen our understanding of marine environments. </p>



<p>As this research illustrates, sometimes letting nature take the lead is the best way to unravel the unknown.</p>

<p>As direct descendants of ancient bacteria that invaded early eukaryotic cells, mitochondria have always been somewhat alien, possessing their own unique genetic material and evolutionary history. </p>



<p>Recent research has shown that mitochondria in our brain cells often send their DNA into the nucleus, where it integrates into the cell's chromosomes, blurring the distinction between mitochondrial and nuclear genetic material.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-link-to-early-mortality">Link to early mortality </h2>



<p>The team behind this discovery was led by Martin Picard from <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University</a> and Ryan Mills from the <a href="https://umich.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Michigan</a>. The study shows that mitochondrial DNA insertions could be linked to early mortality.</p>



<p>“We used to think that the transfer of DNA from mitochondria to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/complete-sequencing-of-the-human-genome-reveals-new-findings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human genome</a> was a rare occurrence,” said Picard, highlighting the unexpected frequency of this phenomenon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitochondrial-dna-acts-like-a-virus">Mitochondrial DNA acts like a virus</h2>



<p>Mitochondria are unique among cell organelles because they carry their own circular DNA, a remnant of their bacterial ancestry. </p>



<p>This <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-can-now-collect-human-dna-from-water-air-and-basically-everywhere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA</a> behaves in a way that is surprisingly similar to a virus, capable of jumping into human chromosomes and integrating itself into the host genome. </p>



<p>The viral-like behavior of mitochondrial DNA, as described by Ryan Mills, is similar to the action of retrotransposons, also known as "jumping genes." These are mobile genetic elements that can move around and insert themselves into different parts of the human genome.</p>



<p>These DNA insertions, known as nuclear-mitochondrial segments (NUMTs), have been silently accumulating in our DNA over millions of years, leaving a lasting genetic footprint that connects our evolutionary past to our present-day biology.</p>



<p>“As a result, all of us are walking around with hundreds of vestigial, mostly benign, mitochondrial DNA segments in our chromosomes that we inherited from our ancestors,” explained Mills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-segments-of-mitochondria-in-the-brain">Segments of mitochondria in the brain</h2>



<p>Recent findings demonstrate that NUMTs are not just relics of the distant past; they are actively being created today. </p>



<p>The ongoing integration of mitochondrial DNA into nuclear chromosomes is particularly prevalent in the brain, with the prefrontal cortex showing the highest concentration of these insertions.</p>



<p>This suggests that certain regions of the brain may be more susceptible to NUMT formation, which could potentially influence cognitive functions and overall neurological health, highlighting the significance of NUMTs in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-foods-with-these-key-nutrients-will-dramatically-slow-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain aging</a> and disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitochondria-influence-aging-and-lifespan">Mitochondria influence aging and lifespan</h2>



<p>“Jumping mitochondrial DNA is not something that only happened in the distant past,” noted Kalpita Karan, a postdoctoral researcher in Picard's lab.</p>



<p>The study, using samples from the ROSMAP aging study, indicates that individuals with more NUMTs in their brains tend to have a shorter lifespan. </p>



<p>“This suggests for the first time that NUMTs may have functional consequences and possibly influence lifespan," said Picard.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-stress-infects-the-nuclear-genome">How stress infects the nuclear genome</h2>



<p>Further research involving cultured human skin cells revealed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-life-stress-alters-brain-genes-more-than-a-head-injury/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a> can accelerate the accumulation of NUMTs.</p>



<p>“Stress makes mitochondria more likely to release pieces of their DNA, and these pieces can then ‘infect’ the nuclear genome,” said Weichen Zhou, a research investigator from Mills' lab.</p>



<p>This finding opens a new avenue for understanding the mechanisms by which stress impacts cellular biology and accelerates the aging process, further linking mitochondrial health to overall well-being.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitochondrial-dna-and-health-risks">Mitochondrial DNA and health risks</h2>



<p>The study sheds light on the multifaceted role of mitochondria, not just as energy providers but also as key players in cellular signaling and genetic stability. </p>



<p>“Mitochondria are cellular processors and a mighty signaling platform,” said Picard. Their ability to alter nuclear DNA sequences may have significant implications for aging and longevity, adding a new layer to our understanding of these ancient organelles.</p>



<p>The discovery that mitochondrial DNA can integrate into the nuclear genome multiple times during a person's lifetime raises important questions about its impact on health. </p>



<p>These NUMT insertions might not always be benign. Depending on where they integrate, they could disrupt crucial genes or regulatory regions, potentially leading to various health issues.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-for-therapeutic-advances">Potential for therapeutic advances</h2>



<p>Understanding how NUMTs contribute to disease processes could lead to new diagnostic markers or therapeutic targets. </p>



<p>For example, monitoring the presence and frequency of NUMTs in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-communicate-to-support-decision-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain cells</a> might help identify individuals at higher risk for certain neurological conditions. </p>



<p>Furthermore, developing strategies to minimize or repair the harmful integration of mitochondrial DNA could provide new avenues for treating or preventing age-related diseases.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-the-moon-s-interior">Exploring the Moon's interior</h2>



<p>Now, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/underground-cave-found-moon-mare-tranquillitatis-could-shelter-astronauts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exploring the interior</a> of celestial bodies like the Moon is no easy feat, especially when the data available is not particularly detailed.</p>



<p>Seismic data -- think of it as the way sound waves behave when interacting with different materials -- is typically how we study a planet or moon's interior.</p>



<p>Briaud and his team combined this seismic data with information from space missions and lunar laser-ranging experiments to get around this obstacle.</p>



<p>They used this data to run simulations of the Moon's core, leading to an interesting conclusion: the Moon's mantle, the layer above the core, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cataclysmic-collision-turned-moon-inside-out/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">is actively overturning</a>.</p>



<p>This means denser material is moving towards the center, while less dense material rises to the surface. This study, therefore, lends significant weight to this theory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moon-s-core-is-very-earth-like">Moon's core is very Earth-like</h2>

<p>Deep within the brackish waters of the Eastern Sierra Nevada's Mono Lake, a remarkable discovery has been made. </p>



<p>Nestled among the lake's celebrated tufa formations and abundant brine shrimp, researchers have uncovered an intriguing and unusual creature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-invisible-residents-of-mono-lake">The invisible residents of Mono Lake</h2>



<p>Hidden within the lake's salty embrace, a team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Berkeley</a> came across a microscopic, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aggressive-predatory-behavior-discovered-in-tiny-single-celled-organisms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-celled</a> life form known as a choanoflagellate.</p>



<p>These tiny organisms have the ability to divide and develop into multicellular colonies, similar to the process by which animal embryos form.</p>



<p>While not classified as animals themselves, choanoflagellates stand as a key model for understanding the transition from one-celled to multicellular existence.</p>



<p>More intriguingly, this particular choanoflagellate - the first of its kind known to science - was found to harbor its own microbiome, establishing a stable physical relationship with bacteria.</p>



<p>This is an extraordinary discovery, as the creature is considered one of the simpler organisms known to possess a microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organisms-that-predate-animal-evolution">Organisms that predate animal evolution </h2>



<p>"Very little is known about choanoflagellates, and there are interesting biological phenomena that we can only gain insight into if we understand their ecology," said Nicole King, a prominent UC Berkeley professor who studies these fascinating creatures.</p>



<p>The study takes us back more than 650 million years, attempting to unveil the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-did-the-first-animals-appear-on-earth-we-are-now-one-step-closer-to-knowing-the-answer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">origin of animals</a>. Often overlooked by marine biologists, these microscopic entities hold clues to understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-ocean-water-discovery-is-unlocking-secrets-of-earths-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient oceans</a> teeming with organisms that predate the evolution of animals.</p>



<p>Studying choanoflagellates could potentially provide answers on the origins of interactions between animals and bacteria, leading to the development of the human microbiome.</p>



<p>"Animals evolved in oceans that were filled with bacteria," said Professor King. "If you think about the tree of life, all organisms that are alive now are related to each other through evolutionary time. So if we study organisms that are alive today, then we can reconstruct what happened in the past."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-surprising-symbiotic-relationship">A surprising symbiotic relationship </h2>



<p>Digging deeper into the mysterious life of choanoflagellates, the researchers made another unexpected discovery. The presence of bacterial DNA was detected inside the hollow colony.</p>



<p>Further investigation revealed that these were not the remnants of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-and-imprint-new-era-dna-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a> consumed by the choanoflagellates, but rather bacteria living and grazing within the colony. This symbiotic relationship is the first of its kind to be documented within a choanoflagellate.</p>



<p>The comprehension of this unique symbiosis could be a stepping stone to understanding the role bacteria play in influencing the behavior of choanoflagellates, such as mating and colony formation.</p>

<p>Despite the challenges of procuring samples from Mono Lake, the research team is eager to continue exploring the fascinating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbial-life-soil-planet-warming-global-carbon-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial life</a> within its secluded waters.</p>



<p>"I'm excited about this new species as a potential model for studying interactions between eukaryotes and bacteria. And I hope it tells us something about evolution. But even if it doesn't, I think it's a fascinating phenomenon," said Professor King. </p>



<p>The discovery of this unusual choanoflagellate offers a new lens through which we can witness the intertwined relationships between microorganisms and their environment, ultimately revealing the delicate web of life that shapes our ecosystems and potentially, our evolutionary history.</p>

<p>The research team, led by Duncan Keller and Cin-Ty Lee from <a href="https://www.rice.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rice University</a>, studied massif-type anorthosites to test ideas about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-sun-affects-magma-formation-deep-within-the-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">magmas</a> that formed them. </p>



<p>The research focused on the Marcy and Morin anorthosites, classic examples from North America’s Grenville orogen that are about 1.1 billion years old. </p>



<p>By analyzing isotopes of boron, oxygen, neodymium, and strontium in the rocks, as well as conducting petrogenetic modeling, the researchers uncovered that these anorthosites originated from magmas rich in melts derived from oceanic crust that had been altered by seawater at low temperatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-mystery-of-the-ancient-rocks">The mystery of the ancient rocks</h2>



<p>Study lead author Duncan Keller is the Clever Planets Postdoctoral Research Associate in Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Rice University.</p>



<p>"Our research indicates that these giant anorthosites likely originated from the extensive melting of subducted oceanic crust beneath convergent continental margins," said  Keller. </p>



<p>"Because the mantle was hotter in the past, this process directly connects the formation of massif-type anorthosites to Earth’s thermal and tectonic evolution."</p>



<p>The team's exploration ventured into the depths of the Marcy and Morin anorthosites, where they identified isotopic signatures analogous to other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jurassic-rocks-reveal-new-details-about-earths-climate-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rocks</a> found in subduction zones, such as abyssal serpentinite.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that these rocks were formed during very hot subduction, a phenomenon that may have been prevalent billions of years ago.</p>



<p>The study combined classic methods with the novel application of boron isotopic analysis to these massif-type anorthosites.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-revolutionary-conclusion">A revolutionary conclusion</h2>



<p>As massif-type anorthosites are not presently forming on Earth, this new evidence linking these rocks to the intense subduction heat of the early Earth opens unique interdisciplinary approaches for understanding how these rocks chronicle the physical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-model-reveals-the-evolution-of-the-earths-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution of our planet</a>. </p>



<p>"This research advances our understanding of ancient rock formations and sheds light on the broader implications for Earth’s tectonic and thermal history," said Cin-Ty Lee, the Harry Carothers Wiess Professor of Geology and co-author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-technological-advances-in-geological-research">Technological advances in geological research</h2>



<p>To achieve these discoveries, the researchers utilized a combination of cutting-edge technology and traditional geological techniques.</p>



<p>Advances in isotope geochemistry and high-precision instrumentation have played a crucial role in unveiling the mysteries embedded within ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-complete-record-of-snowball-earth-found-in-rock-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rock formations</a>. </p>



<p>For example, the deployment of sophisticated mass spectrometers allowed the team to measure isotopic ratios with unprecedented accuracy, ultimately refining our understanding of how massif-type anorthosites were formed.</p>



<p>Moreover, the integration of computational modeling with field and laboratory data has enabled scientists to simulate the geodynamic processes that shaped these enigmatic rocks. These models provide insights into the conditions of the early Earth, offering a virtual glimpse into the complex interactions between tectonic plates, mantle convection, and crustal formation.</p>



<p>The collaborative nature of this study, drawing expertise from multiple institutions, highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research in advancing our knowledge of Earth's geological history. </p>

<p>This magnificent 2,492-carat gemstone, hidden beneath the earth's crust, was unveiled thanks to cutting-edge X-ray technology.</p>



<p>Brought to light by the Canadian mining company Lucara, this breathtaking discovery topples over a century of records. </p>



<p>The last time we beheld such a titan was 120 years ago, when the famous Cullinan Diamond, a whopping 3,106-carat spectacle, was unearthed in South Africa. </p>



<p>And where might those carats be now? As symbols of imperial majesty, they twinkle in the British crown jewels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diamond-discovery-in-botswana">Diamond discovery in Botswana</h2>



<p>Dr. Naseem Lahri, the Managing Director of Lucara Botswana, now takes the spotlight. She is the first woman and the first Motswana to lead a diamond mining company in Botswana.</p>



<p>There's little discourse about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-secret-role-of-seawater-in-gold-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">worth</a> of this diamond. Merely by its monumental size, it's anticipated to fetch tens of millions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The ability to recover such a massive, high-quality stone intact demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach to diamond recovery," <a href="https://lucaradiamond.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lucara</a>'s CEO William Lamb said in the statement following the find.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crystal-clear-success-story">Crystal clear success story</h2>



<p>The star of this story, beyond the dazzling diamond itself, is Lucara's X-ray transmission technology. Introduced in 2017, this innovation's primary mission is to detect and safeguard large, valuable diamonds, ensuring their safe extraction from the belly of the earth sans damage.</p>



<p>To grasp the enormity of this gem, you'd need to see it nestled in the palm of a hand, dwarfing an average-sized golf ball!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-monumental-finds">Legacy of monumental finds</h2>



<p>This recent discovery is not the first time the Karowe Mine has made headlines. Located about 300 miles north of Gaborone, Botswana's capital, this mine has produced two other remarkably large diamonds. They are the 1,758-carat Sewelo and the 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona.</p>



<p>In the not-so-distant past, 2017 to be precise, the Lesedi La Rona was bagged for a staggering $53 million by British diamond magnate Laurence Graff. Two years later, the Sewelo Diamond was scooped up by luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton.</p>

<p>Botswana's economy thrives on diamonds. They are a silent yet powerful force in the industry. It's no surprise that President Mokgweetsi Masisi was set to view this massive gem.</p>



<p>The freshly mined gem is not far behind the largest diamond ever mined -- the 3,016.75-carat <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cullinan_Diamond" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cullinan diamond</a>. Noted for its size, arresting blue-white hue and incomparable clarity, it is perhaps the most admired diamond globally. </p>

<p>Tardigrades, endearingly referred to as "water bears," boast a reputation for their astounding resilience. These microscopic marvels can outlast anything -- from lethal radiation and arctic temperatures to the vacuum of space.</p>



<p>Despite being ubiquitous across our planet, wherever there's water, the evolutionary history of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tardigrades-can-hitch-rides-on-snails-to-travel-farther/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eight-legged mini creatures</a> has remained a cryptic puzzle due to a limited fossil record.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-tardigrades-are-known-as-water-bears">Why tardigrades are known as "water bears"</h2>



<p>Tardigrades, also known as water bears, are tiny creatures that measure about 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters long. They have a segmented body with eight legs, each ending in tiny claws or suction disks. </p>



<p>Their bodies are covered in a flexible cuticle that they shed as they grow. These little guys have a simple structure with no respiratory or circulatory system, relying on diffusion to exchange gases.</p>



<p>You'll find tardigrades in a variety of colors, from transparent to shades of red, orange, and green. They munch on plant cells, algae, and small invertebrates by piercing them with their stylet, which is a needle-like mouthpart. </p>



<p>Despite being so small, tardigrades are incredibly resilient and can survive extreme environments that would wipe out most other life forms.</p>



<p>Water bears can handle temperatures from near absolute zero to over 300 degrees Fahrenheit. They can also endure radiation levels that would be deadly to most. </p>



<p>Tardigrades can even survive in the vacuum of space and can go for years without food or water, springing back to life once they're rehydrated.</p>



<p>Researchers have found tardigrades in diverse environments, from deep ocean trenches to the highest mountains. </p>



<p>They possess unique proteins that protect their cells from damage, allowing them to enter a state called cryptobiosis, which we will now discuss in greater detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tardigrade-fossils-and-advanced-microscopy">Tardigrade fossils and advanced microscopy</h2>



<p>An enlightening study has emerged from the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a>. Associate Professor Javier Ortega-Hernández and PhD candidate Marc Mapalo took a fresh look at an old mystery.</p>



<p>They revisited a piece of amber discovered in the 1960s from Canada, which housed the known fossil tardigrade, <em>Beorn leggi</em>, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discovered-a-16-million-year-old-tardigrade-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">another assumed specimen</a> of a tardigrade that was inadequately described previously.</p>



<p>For their investigation, the scientists used confocal laser microscopy, an innovative technique traditionally used for cell biology studies, allowing them to explore the minute structures of these fossil tardigrades in spectacular detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amber-fossils-reveal-tardigrade-secrets">Amber fossils reveal tardigrade secrets</h2>



<p>The team's study elucidated not only a definitive classification of <em>B. leggi</em> within the tardigrade lineage but also unveiled a previously unidentified species.</p>



<p>As Ortega-Hernández explained, “Both of them are found in the same piece of amber that dates to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extraordinary-dinosaur-fossils-discovered-from-the-end-of-cretaceous-era/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cretaceous Period</a>, which means that these water bears lived alongside <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-ancestors-coexisted-with-dinosaurs-yes-according-to-shocking-new-research/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dinosaurs</a>.”</p>

<p>The microscopic fossil images of <em>B. leggi</em> depict seven well-preserved claws, the ones curving towards the body being smaller than those extending outwards -- a pattern resonating with modern-day tardigrades.</p>



<p>The second specimen, now named <em>Aerobius dactylus</em>, sported claws of roughly equal length on its first three pairs of legs but longer claws on the fourth pair.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-tech-used-for-ancient-insights">Modern tech used for ancient insights</h2>



<p>Emboldened by a photograph featured in the 2019 book, "Water Bears: The Biology of Tardigrades," Mapalo found inspiration to apply confocal laser microscopy on his current fossil under study. </p>



<p>This fresh approach led to the discovery of another new tardigrade species, enclosed in a piece of Dominican amber, which was documented in a 2021 paper alongside Ortega-Hernández and researchers from the <a href="https://www.njit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Jersey Institute of Technology</a>.</p>



<p>Apart from expanding the tardigrade fossil record, the discoveries offer critical calibration points for molecular clock analysis. </p>



<p>This tool helps scientists estimate the timing of pivotal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitat-shifts-shaped-the-evolution-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary events</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cryptobiosis-and-historical-extinctions">Cryptobiosis and historical extinctions</h2>



<p>The latest findings postulate that modern tardigrades likely diverged during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-did-the-first-animals-appear-on-earth-we-are-now-one-step-closer-to-knowing-the-answer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cambrian Period</a> around 500 million years ago. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the research shines a spotlight on cryptobiosis, the technical term for the remarkable survival mechanism that enables tardigrades to endure extreme conditions by entering a state of stasis.</p>



<p>Ortega-Hernández elaborates, “The study estimates that this survival mechanism likely evolved during the mid to late Paleozoic, which may have played a crucial role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tardigrades-can-hitch-rides-on-snails-to-travel-farther/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">helping tardigrades endure</a> the end-Permian mass extinction, one of the most severe extinction events in Earth’s history.”</p>

<p>Most, if not all, fossil tardigrades were discovered by chance. However, this serendipitous research has made one thing clear: new discoveries are waiting to be found, offering hope for the uncovering of more water bear mysteries hidden in amber.</p>

<p>Tardigrades' extraordinary resilience raises intriguing questions regarding the possibilities of life beyond Earth, as their survival strategies might inform the search for extraterrestrial life in similarly harsh environments. </p>



<p>Moreover, examining how these creatures endure extreme conditions offers insights into the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity. </p>



<p>By unlocking the secrets of their genetics, researchers can also investigate applications in biotechnology, particularly in fields like cryobiology, where understanding the mechanics of their stasis can lead to advancements in preserving biological materials. </p>



<p>Thus, the ongoing study of tardigrades not only elucidates the past but could also shape the future of various scientific inquiries.</p>

<p>The "CyberDog," an AI-powered robotic marvel, is leading a new frontier in the fight against invasive fire ants. </p>



<p>Scientists have unveiled this innovative technology as a game-changing method to tackle the global issue of Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA). </p>



<p>By integrating artificial intelligence with advanced robotics, the CyberDog can automatically identify and manage these destructive pests, offering a more precise and eco-friendly solution compared to conventional methods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeting-the-invisible-enemy">Targeting the invisible enemy</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-red-fire-ants-have-made-their-way-to-europe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RIFA</a> is recognized as one of the world's most ruinous pests. Having inadvertently barged into the United States in the 1930s, this invasive species has since colonized numerous regions, including China, Japan, and Europe, wreaking both environmental havoc and economic damage.</p>



<p>"RIFA proliferate rapidly in established areas, displacing local fauna and flora by outcompeting and eliminating sensitive species. Small vertebrates, such as birds and reptiles, are particularly vulnerable," explained Eduardo Fox, a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://www.ueg.br/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">State University of Goiás</a> in Brazil and corresponding author of the study.</p>



<p>Conventional control methods heavily rely on the use of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pesticides-have-become-increasingly-toxic-to-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pesticides</a>, which run the risk of harming native species. </p>



<p>“Fire ant nests are difficult for untrained personnel to identify and confirm in the field, and searching large areas can be time-consuming and exhausting under the hot sun," Fox continued. </p>



<p>"A robot could automatically locate the nests without requiring specially trained individuals and operate at various times of the day regardless of temperature conditions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cyberdog-on-a-mission">CyberDog on a mission</h2>



<p>Life at the frontline of this battle has taken a tech twist with the arrival of a specially trained <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robot-dog-sheds-new-light-on-how-animals-learn-to-walk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robot dog</a> from Xiaomi. </p>



<p>The team integrated the CyberDog with a machine learning model trained on over 1,100 RIFA nest images, resulting in a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ant-nests-could-help-humans-build-better-transportation-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nest</a> detection precision rate exceeding 90%. </p>



<p>“This is key for diagnosing active mounds from abandoned nests and avoiding false positives with mounds inhabited by other species,” stated Hualong Qiu, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.irg-wp.com/laboratories/gaf.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Guangdong Academy of Forestry</a> in China and corresponding author of the study.</p>

<p>The robot’s modus operandi was simple yet effective. Programmed to press onto the suspected nest with its front paw, the robotic soldier could provoke the ants into revealing their hideouts. </p>



<p>Disturbances would trigger an aggressive rush of worker ants from the nest, providing a clear sign of active habitation.</p>



<p>“A group of students received official standard training for quarantine inspectors and were tasked with locating fire ant nests in an open field. Subsequently, the AI-trained robot was challenged with the same field, and the performances of the students and the robot were compared,” Qiu explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cyberdog-vs-human-the-field-test">CyberDog vs. human: The field test</h2>



<p>Following rigorous official standard training for quarantine inspectors, a group of students was set to locate fire ant nests in an open field. Then it was the robot's turn. </p>



<p>The showdown proved the robot dog had the upper paw when it came to locating nests, outperforming the human inspectors by identifying three times more RIFA nests.</p>



<p>Despite the impressive results, the researchers are aware of the challenges that lie ahead in scaling up the technology.</p>

<p>“The primary limitations to scaling the use of robots are their battery autonomy, which lasts about 30 minutes, and the high cost of acquiring more agile and efficient models," noted Zheng Yan, a researcher at <a href="https://en.lzu.edu.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lanzhou University</a> in China and another corresponding author.</p>



<p>"Currently, it is still more expensive using the robot system than through the traditional approach, but we believe production costs may optimize this with time,” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-robot-dogs-and-the-future">Robot dogs and the future</h2>



<p>Beyond the technical achievements, the study also has implications for public awareness. “In addition to being versatile machines for navigating urban environments, robot dogs attract a lot of public attention," Yan further highlighted.</p>



<p>"Fire ants pose a serious threat in China, yet most people remain unaware of the dangers of invasive fire ant nests in public areas. Therefore, sightings of robots tracking fire ant nests are likely to captivate the public and raise awareness about the presence of fire ants.”</p>



<p>In essence, the integration of robots and AI in pest management could be a game-changer in combating invasive fire ants. </p>



<p>As the world becomes more digitized, the fusion of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robosapiens-ai-project-making-industrial-robots-more-free-thinking-adaptable/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI and robotics</a> continues to redefine the limits of what's possible – even in the world of pest control.</p>

<p>When it comes to our understanding of human evolution, we largely depend on fossils. We string together stories of existence, evolution, and extinction from the skeletal remains retrieved from Earth's crust. However, not all parts of the world offer the same bounty of information.</p>



<p>Africa, often dubbed the cradle of humankind, houses several fossil hotspots. One of the prime examples is the eastern branch of the East African Rift System, known for its abundance of significant fossil sites like Oldupai Gorge in Tanzania.</p>



<p>However, this prolific source of evidence only represents 1% of Africa's surface area, suggesting we might be missing a substantial part of the evolutionary narrative.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interpreting-early-human-history">Interpreting early human history</h2>



<p>In a new study, experts have investigated the extent to which fossil hotspots like the East African Rift System have biased our understanding of human evolution. The study emphasizes the importance of acknowledging this bias when interpreting early human history.</p>



<p>Study lead author W. Andrew Barr is an assistant professor of anthropology at <a href="https://www.gwu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">George Washington University</a>.</p>



<p>"Because the evidence of early human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-give-us-clues-about-early-human-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a> comes from a small range of sites, it’s important to acknowledge that we don’t have a complete picture of what happened across the entire continent," said Barr.</p>



<p>"If we can point to the ways in which the fossil record is systematically biased and not a perfect representation of everything, then we can adjust our interpretations by taking this into account."</p>



<p>To understand the extent of this bias, Barr and study co-author Professor Bernard Wood focused on the distribution of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-will-happen-if-modern-large-mammals-become-extinct/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modern mammals</a> inhabiting the rift valley.</p>



<p>The researchers found that only a small proportion of medium- and large-bodied mammals were "rift specialists," and the rift environment encompassed an average of just 1.6% of the total geographic range of modern mammal species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bias-in-human-evolution-studies">Bias in human evolution studies</h2>



<p>Weighing this finding against the human fossil record, the researchers questioned if we were over-relying on a sample that has a narrow ecological and geographical spread.</p>



<p>This concern was solidified after a second analysis where Barr and Wood compared the skulls of modern primates from the rift valley with those from other parts of the continent. The rift valley skulls represented less than 50% of the total variation among primate skulls in Africa.</p>



<p>"We must avoid falling into the trap of coming up with what looks like a comprehensive reconstruction of the human story, when we know we don’t have all of the relevant evidence," said Wood. </p>



<p>"Imagine trying to capture the social and economic complexity of Washington D.C. if you only had access to information from one neighborhood. It helps if you can get a sense of how much information is missing."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reality-beyond-the-hotspots">Reality beyond the hotspots</h2>



<p>While the scientific community has been aware of this limitation, prior studies had not quantified the magnitude of the bias using modern mammals as analogs for human fossils. </p>



<p>Though information from modern mammals doesn't provide exact locations or environments where our ancestors lived, they can offer crucial indicators to enhance understanding of the environments and physical differences of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-ancient-humans-hunted-elephants-with-stone-tools/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fuller-picture-of-human-evolution">Fuller picture of human evolution</h2>



<p>The study authors urge the scientific community to broaden their horizons and venture beyond traditional hotspots to uncover new fossil sites.</p>



<p>Barr acknowledged the challenging nature of working outside these traditional hotspots. "There’s a smaller number of people who work outside these traditional hotspots and do the thankless labor of trying to find fossils in these contexts that are really hard to work in, where the geology isn’t favorable for finding fossils," said Barr.</p>



<p>"It’s worth doing that sort of work to make our picture of mammal and human evolution from this time period more complete."</p>



<p>Uncovering the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-world-unraveling-mysteries-life-origin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mysteries</a> of human evolution is a lot like trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle with many of the pieces missing.</p>



<p>Recognizing the biases in our existing datasets and refining our approaches can help us get closer to a more complete and accurate picture of our ancestry.</p>

<p>From experiencing frequent sunsets and sunrises to dealing with microgravity and living in a confined space, astronauts face challenges that most of us can barely imagine. These unique circumstances can adversely impact astronauts' performance and overall well-being.</p>



<p>Recognizing the importance of this issue, scientists have undertaken various studies to understand the mental health impacts of space travel. </p>



<p>Experts are also testing various types of technology that may help to safeguard the mental well-being of humans in outer space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-light-therapy-in-space">Light therapy in space</h2>



<p>A project from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Space Agency</a> (ESA), aptly named Circadian Light, is presently investigating the effects of a new lighting system on astronauts. </p>



<p>The system uses an LED panel that automatically varies the light spectrum, imitating the condition on Earth. </p>



<p>This experiment is expected to provide valuable insights into the impact of light on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-circadian-disturbances-trigger-mental-health-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">circadian rhythm</a> regulation, sleep quality, stress levels, and overall well-being. </p>



<p>Such findings could also benefit shift workers and individuals in extreme or remote environments on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tuning-into-circadian-rhythms">Tuning into circadian rhythms</h2>



<p>The ESA's earlier investigation, Circadian Rhythms, analyzed how the non-24-hour cycles of light and dark in space alter daily rhythms. This research led to improved countermeasures to protect astronauts' <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronauts-microbiome-health-is-crucial-to-future-space-exploration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health</a> and performance.</p>



<p>The scientists used innovative non-invasive skin sensor technology to measure core body temperature, a key factor in determining circadian rhythms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-navigating-communication-delays">Navigating communication delays</h2>



<p>During missions to the Moon or Mars, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psyche-mission-paves-a-revolutionary-path-toward-deep-space-communication/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">communication</a> delays can reach up to 30 minutes each way. </p>



<p>The Comm Delay Assessment investigation examined how these delays might influence crew members dealing with emergencies. </p>



<p>The findings showed that while communication delays did increase stress and decrease task efficiency, enhanced training, teamwork, and technology could effectively manage these problems.</p>

It also measured the recovery time post-mission. </p>

<p>Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
