<p>Italy’s Campi Flegrei has been restless again when it comes to earthquakes, and a new AI approach is helping scientists see what the ground is really doing. </p>



<p>In a peer-reviewed study, researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>, along with colleagues at INGV Osservatorio Vesuviano and the <a href="https://www.international.unina.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Naples Federico II</a>, reanalyzed continuous seismic records. The team found more than four times as many small earthquakes between January 21, 2022, and March 20, 2025.</p>



<p>The researchers did not detect any direct sign of magma moving upward. Instead, they highlighted very shallow hybrid quakes tied to the hydrothermal system.</p>



<p>That fuller picture matters because small events reveal where the crust is stressed and how energy is moving through the volcanic field. With cleaner detections and sharper locations, scientists can track changes faster and judge when activity starts to cluster in risky ways.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clear-signals-urgent-stakes">Clear signals, urgent stakes</h2>



<p>“Seismicity could change at any time, and that may be the most important thing about this study: this capability of getting a clear view is now operational,” said study co-author Greg Beroza, a geophysics professor at Stanford University.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supervolcano-campi-flegrei-naples-italy-solfatara-crater-phlegraean-fields-signs-of-waking-up/">caldera</a> sits within the Neapolitan area, where more than half a million people live and work. That density means even modest shaking or ground movement can disrupt daily life, strain buildings, and complicate evacuations.</p>



<p>History shows why clarity is essential. During the 1982-1984 crisis, uplift and persistent earthquakes damaged structures across Pozzuoli. A major analysis documented that the events triggered the evacuation of about 40,000 people.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-turns-noise-into-earthquake-signals">AI turns noise into earthquake signals</h2>



<p>The team trained a machine learning workflow on continuous waveforms and used it to scan years of data consistently. That created one catalog rather than a patchwork of methods, so patterns stand out instead of becoming blurred.</p>



<p>AI did more than count earthquakes. The workflow sharpened event locations and magnitudes, turning noisy curves into clean signals that line up with mapped features and known hot zones. </p>



<p>That is the kind of precision emergency managers need when activity jumps in hours, not weeks. One payoff is a much clearer view of the caldera’s thin ring shaped structures and shallow faults. </p>



<p>Those features organize the small quakes and help separate background rumble from changes that could matter for public safety.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcano-under-quiet-strain">Volcano under quiet strain</h2>



<p>Campi Flegrei is a large caldera, the broad depression left by past eruptions, ringed by faults and dotted with old vents and fuming ground. It is not a single cone, it is a field where different parts can wake up at different times.</p>



<p>The region breathes over years through uplift and subsidence known as bradyseism. Those slow vertical motions have been recorded for centuries and often line up with swarms of small earthquakes.</p>



<p>In the new catalog, most activity sits at very shallow depths and traces a narrow ring fault system consistent with surface features and the zone now rising. </p>



<p>The authors reported no direct signature of magma rising toward the surface in this interval. This lowers near-term eruption concern but does not remove the need for close watching.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faults-reveal-hidden-stress">Faults reveal hidden stress</h2>



<p>Faults are breaks in rock that slip when stress overcomes strength, and their length and orientation constrain how big an earthquake could be. When small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-and-flood-zones-hidden-risks-in-the-pacific-northwest/">quakes</a> line up along a longer fault, planners can bound the upper size of plausible events rather than guess in the dark.</p>



<p>Seeing faults crisply also helps compare present unrest with past episodes. Shaking that migrates onto a new segment or clusters at the edge of the ring may signal a change in how the system stores and releases pressure.</p>



<p>Those signals are not predictions by themselves. They are inputs to models that weigh where stress is building, how close rocks are to failure, and what level of shaking the built environment can handle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-refines-risk-planning">AI refines risk planning</h2>



<p>Near real-time detections let observatories update maps of active zones as conditions evolve. That supports decisions like where to inspect bridges, how to stage ambulances, or when to test public alerts before a busy weekend.</p>



<p>Sharper locations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/">magnitudes</a> also help engineers validate expected shaking levels against what instruments record in town. With that feedback loop, officials can refine microzonation, revisit building priorities, and tune maintenance schedules before the next swarm.</p>



<p>Past experience is a warning here. During 1982-1984, the harbor shallowed and commerce paused, schools closed, and the government approved new housing to relocate residents. </p>



<p>Planning for unrest is not only about eruptions, it is about everyday disruptions that stack up when the ground keeps moving.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-helps-not-predicts">AI helps, not predicts</h2>



<p>The present results point to pressure within a shallow system, not direct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magma-layer-keeps-the-yellowstone-supervolcano-dormant/">magma</a> rise, during 2022-2025. That aligns with other independent work that has argued for pressure buildup and evolving stress in the crust during long stretches without eruption.</p>



<p>Unrest can still change quickly. More small quakes could organize into tighter clusters, or uplift rates could shift, and those changes would be visible fast with the new tools.</p>



<p>AI does not replace dense earthquake monitoring or local expertise. It helps analysts keep up when data surge, flag subtle changes that a human might miss after a long night, and focus attention on the signals that matter most.</p>

<p>Doomscrolling, defined as the act of incessantly browsing distressing news on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spending-less-time-on-social-media-improves-your-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social media</a>, has become a common behavior in the digital age.</p>



<p>Tales of calamities, terror attacks, and wild <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-brains-may-be-hardwired-to-believe-lies-and-conspiracy-theories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conspiracy theories</a> might spring to mind when thinking of doomscrolling.</p>



<p>The study shows that this practice can significantly alter how we perceive humanity, our sense of security, and the overall purpose of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-doomscrolling-s-impact-on-mental-health">Doomscrolling’s impact on mental health</h2>



<p>Study lead author Reza Shabahang is an expert in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work at Flinders. </p>



<p>“Doomscrolling can have dire consequences on our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fear-and-anxiety-the-mental-health-impacts-of-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mental health</a> and wellbeing, leaving us feeling stress, anxiety, despair, and questioning the meaning of life," said Shabahang.</p>



<p>It turns out that frequently consuming negative news from social media can be a conduit for vicarious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-trauma-chronically-affects-survivors-of-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trauma</a>.</p>



<p>People can experience adverse psychological effects even though they didn't directly experience the traumatic event themselves. </p>



<p>In some instances, people reported symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), such as anxiety and despair.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-doomscrolling-and-misanthropy">Doomscrolling and misanthropy</h2>



<p>The researchers delved deeper, surveying 800 university students from two distinctly diverse cultures: an Eastern collective (Iran) and a Western individualistic culture (the United States).</p>



<p>The team examined how excessive consumption of negative news can shape individuals' thoughts and feelings about their existence.</p>



<p>Could a correlation exist between doomscrolling and individuals' thoughts and feelings about humanity and the importance of life? </p>



<p>Indeed, the study confirmed the link, with doomscrolling significantly tied to existential anxiety - concerns about one's existence, life, and death. </p>



<p>Moreover, doomscrolling emerged as a significant predictor of misanthropy - a general resentment of people - in the Iranian sample.</p>



<p>“When we're constantly exposed to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-a-history-of-depression-tend-to-process-more-negative-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">negative news</a> and information online, it can threaten our beliefs when it comes to our own mortality and the control we have over our own lives," said Shabahang.</p>



<p>"Moreover, doomscrolling can negatively affect how we view the people and world around us."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mindfully-navigating-the-digital-landscape">Mindfully navigating the digital landscape</h2>



<p>The study highlights the importance of monitoring our online habits, taking regular breaks from social media, and limiting exposure to negative news. </p>



<p>“We suggest that people pay attention to how much time they are spending on social media and to be aware of the impact it is having on their emotions, thoughts, and feelings, especially when it comes to negative news and events," said Shabahang.</p>



<p>The message is clear: Track your doomscrolling habits and take steps to reduce this behavior if it seems problematic. </p>



<p>“By becoming more aware of our online habits, such as doomscrolling, and taking small steps to address them, it could help with improving our overall mental well-being,” noted Shabahang.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-tips-to-combat-doomscrolling">Practical tips to combat doomscrolling</h2>



<p>To counter the adverse effects of doomscrolling, implementing practical strategies can make a considerable difference. </p>

<p>The researchers, led by Dr. Alicia Soderberg from <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a> and Dr. John Doe from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, used this advanced method to independently assess the intricate composition and surface roughness of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturns-moon-titan-has-shorelines-shaped-by-waves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Titan's enigmatic seas</a>. </p>



<p>Much like shining light on a diamond from different angles to capture its full sparkle, a bistatic radar experiment involves directing a precise radio beam from the spacecraft towards Titan, where it is then reflected towards a strategically positioned receiving antenna based back on Earth. </p>



<p>This innovative approach provides a two-fold perspective, offering richer and more comprehensive details about the surfaces it illuminates.</p>



<p>According to Dr. Soderberg, the strength of bistatic information lies in its remarkable comprehensiveness, as it is highly sensitive to both the composition of the reflecting surface and its detailed roughness.</p>



<p>Previous monostatic techniques, while valuable, only allowed for single-sided assessments, which inevitably failed to deliver a complete and accurate picture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surface-properties-of-titan-s-seas">Surface properties of Titan’s seas</h2>



<p>The team utilized four bistatic radar observations obtained during 2014 and 2016 for this comprehensive study. </p>



<p>The observations were made from different vantage points, capturing data as the spacecraft approached Titan and again as it moved away. </p>



<p>The experts meticulously studied the data from the three large polar seas: Kraken Mare, Ligeia Mare, and Punga Mare. Their detailed analysis yielded intriguing results regarding the composition of the surface layers of these vast hydrocarbon seas.</p>



<p>The sea surface characteristics varied significantly depending upon the latitude and specific location. For instance, the southernmost area of Kraken Mare was found to have the highest dielectric constant, signifying a notable ability to reflect a radio signal more effectively.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the study revealed that all three seas were mostly tranquil at the time of the flybys, with surface waves not exceeding 3.3 millimeters in height. </p>



<p>However, coastal areas and interbasin straits exhibited a slightly higher level of roughness, suggesting the presence of possible tidal currents and dynamic surface interactions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rivers-of-methane-feed-the-seas">Rivers of methane feed the seas</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers found indications that the rivers feeding these seas are primarily composed of methane. </p>



<p>However, these rivers turn ethane-rich when they flow into the open liquid seas - a phenomenon that is comparable to the mixing of fresh river water with the salty sea on Earth.</p>



<p>This study is merely the tip of the iceberg in our understanding of Titan. Dr. Doe emphasized that more revelations are expected to emerge from the wealth of data produced during the 13-year investigation of Titan via the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-energy-imbalance-discovered-on-saturn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cassini mission</a>.</p>



<p>So, in the world of celestial studies and space exploration, it's safe to say this exploration is just the first giant leap.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exploring-titan-s-mysterious-atmosphere">Exploring Titan's mysterious atmosphere</h2>



<p>Beyond its seas and rivers, Titan's atmosphere presents a multifaceted puzzle that continues to entice scientists. </p>



<p>Composed mainly of nitrogen, much like Earth's atmosphere, it also harbors significant amounts of methane and hydrogen. This dense, orange-tinged haze, opaque to visible light, obscures the surface from straightforward optical observation.</p>



<p>Nonetheless, it is this very haze that captivates researchers, as it offers clues into the atmospheric dynamics and potential for prebiotic chemical processes.</p>



<p>Despite the wealth of data collected, the enigma of Titan's atmosphere remains partly shrouded in mystery. </p>



<p>Further observations and missions will be crucial in unraveling the chemical interactions taking place within this hazy shroud and understanding their implications for both Titan's evolution and the broader search for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shock-discovery-saturns-moon-enceladus-has-all-of-the-ingredients-necessary-for-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life beyond Earth</a>. </p>

<p>For the first time, scientists have confirmed the presence of ammonia and phosphine in the clouds that envelop Venus. But, what's so special about these two gases? Interestingly, these two "biomarkers" could be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-hellish-planet-venus-can-help-us-find-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">indicative of life</a>.</p>



<p>On our Blue Planet, both of these compounds surface during the decay of organic matter, like plants and animals. Yet, there are currently no other known natural processes that could produce these gases on Venus.</p>



<p>This leads us to a thrilling possibility: could these gases be produced by something we're not yet aware of? </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-on-venus">Life on Venus</h2>



<p>Currently, Venus holds the title for being the warmest planet in our solar system. </p>



<p>Imagine a surface hot enough to melt lead. Picture a dense atmosphere blanketed with toxic clouds of sulfuric acid. The thought of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/venus-environment-could-support-certain-types-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life existing in such a place</a> is nothing short of jaw-dropping.</p>



<p>The study was led by Professor Jane Greaves, an astronomer from <a href="https://www.cardiff.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cardiff University</a>. She and her team presented their intriguing discoveries at the National Astronomy Meeting 2024 at the <a href="https://www.hull.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hull</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ammonia-in-the-clouds-of-venus">Ammonia in the clouds of Venus</h2>



<p>Interestingly, while ammonia has been identified before in our solar system, its presence was seen in the gas giants of Jupiter and Saturn. "It's natural there because their gas is mostly hydrogen," noted Professor Greaves.</p>



<p>Finding ammonia on the rocky planets like Earth or Venus, however, is rarer. It tends to be produced by anaerobic decay of plant and animal matter on our planet. Yet, somehow, Professor Greaves and her team detected it in the clouds of Venus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-of-gases-on-venus">Detection of gases on Venus </h2>



<p>How did they do this? The answer comes from West Virginia's Green Bank telescope. This gigantic 2.3-acre dish detects weak radio waves that are constantly raining down on us from objects in space.</p>



<p>Dr. Dave Clements from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College London</a>'s department of physics also contributed significantly to the findings. He was quick to remind us that the detection of these gases on Venus is not hard evidence that life exists there. Particularly, it's unknown what processes could be emitting these chemicals.</p>



<p>“Our findings suggest that when the atmosphere is bathed in sunlight the phosphine is destroyed. All that we can say is that phosphine is there. We don’t know what’s producing it. It may be chemistry that we don’t understand. Or possibly life.”</p>



<p>Dr. Clements noted that more observations and lab and theoretical work is needed to understand what's going on, and maybe future missions to Venus will help as well.</p>



<p>In short, this discovery is raising more questions than it answers. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-venus-earth-s-evil-twin">Venus: Earth's evil twin</h2>



<p>With roughly the same size and rocky nature, Venus is often termed as Earth's "evil twin."</p>



<p>However, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/venus-has-lost-almost-all-of-its-water-but-why-did-it-disappear/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">surface conditions</a> are a far cry from that of our home planet. The average temperature of Venus would make even the most sweltering summer day on Earth feel like a cool breeze.</p>



<p>Despite such extreme conditions, the presence of phosphine and ammonia indicate that at some point, Venus might have been more welcoming. Some believe that about 700 million years ago, Venus may have had oceans similar to Earth's and could have harbored life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-venus-potential-for-life">Venus' potential for life</h2>



<p>The detection of phosphine isn't entirely new to us. In 2020, scientists found traces of this gas in the planet's cloud cover. These findings were disputed, and members of the discovery team admitted to a calibration error.</p>



<p>However, this time it was detected again, thanks to the James Clerk Maxwell telescope and Dr. Clements. He suggested that sunlight during the day could be destroying the phosphine.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>While the findings are just preliminary, they are also "very exciting," according to Dr. Robert Massey, deputy executive director at the Royal Astronomical Society.</p>



<p>"More work is needed to learn more about the presence of these two potential biomarkers in Venus' clouds," Dr. Massey told MailOnline.</p>



<p>It seems like we are just at the beginning of a thrilling journey. These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitable-exoplanet-gliese-12-b-only-40-light-years-away-earth-like-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential signs of life</a> or unknown chemical processes have laid a path for more intriguing studies and discoveries in the future.</p>



<p>Is there life on Venus? We're a little closer to an answer today, but there's still a lot more to find out.</p>

<p>A massive storm has been raging on Jupiter for at least 350 years, and appears as an enormous red oval that is visible even from Earth. This captivating meteorological feature, located in Jupiter's southern hemisphere, is known as the Great Red Spot.</p>



<p>Spanning over 10,000 miles wide, the intense anticyclone blows at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour in a counterclockwise direction - a windstorm that is undeniably the largest in our solar system. And what's even more intriguing is that the Great Red Spot has been <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-great-red-spot-may-not-be-as-old-as-we-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shrinking</a>.</p>



<p>Astoundingly, while the storm's latitudinal reach has remained rather consistent, it has dramatically contracted longitudinally.</p>



<p>Extending over 40 degrees in the late 19th century, the Great Red Spot had shrunk to a mere 14 degrees by 2016, when NASA's Juno spacecraft landed for a series of orbits around the planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-allure-of-the-great-red-spot">Allure of the Great Red Spot</h2>



<p>"Many people have looked at the Great Red Spot over the last 200 years and were as fascinated by it as I am," said Caleb Keaveney, a Ph.D. student at <a href="https://gsas.yale.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences</a> and lead author of a recent study.</p>



<p>"A lot of those people were not professional astronomers - they were just passionate and curious. That, plus the curiosity I see in people when I talk about my work, makes me feel like part of something bigger than myself."</p>



<p>Despite rigorous study, the Great Red Spot continues to be a source of intrigue, shrouded in mystery. Astronomers are unsure about when the spot formed, what led to its formation, or even why it bears a red color.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-transient-storms">Impact of transient storms</h2>



<p>Keaveney conducted the research with Gary Lackmann of <a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Carolina State University</a> and Timothy Dowling of the <a href="https://louisville.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Louisville</a>. </p>



<p>The team turned their focus towards evaluating the impact of smaller, transient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jupiters-storms-can-last-for-years-but-what-fuels-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storms</a> on the Great Red Spot.</p>



<p>The researchers utilized an atmospheric model called the Explicit Planetary Isentropic-Coordinate (EPIC) model, which was developed for planetary applications in the 1990s by Dowling.</p>



<p>The team conducted a series of 3D simulations. Some of the simulations featured interactions between the Great Red Spot and smaller storms of varying frequency and intensity, while others did not include the smaller storms.</p>



<p>The analysis revealed that the presence of other storms actually strengthened the Great Red Spot, causing it to expand.</p>



<p>"We found through&nbsp;numerical simulations&nbsp;that by feeding the Great Red Spot a diet of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smaller-storms-feed-jupiters-great-red-spot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smaller storms</a>, as has been known to occur on Jupiter, we could modulate its size," said Keaveney.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-relevance-to-earth-s-weather-events">Relevance to Earth’s weather events</h2>



<p>The researchers drew parallels between their models and long-lived high-pressure systems observed on Earth. </p>



<p>These intense systems - referred to as "heat domes" or "blocks" - occur routinely in the westerly jet streams that sweep across Earth’s mid-latitudes, playing a significant role in the occurrence of extreme weather phenomena like heat waves and droughts.</p>



<p>The systems interact with smaller, transient weather patterns, including high pressure eddies and anticyclones.</p>



<p>"Interactions with nearby weather systems have been shown to sustain and amplify heat domes, which motivated our hypothesis that similar interactions on Jupiter could sustain the Great Red Spot," Keaveney emphasized. </p>



<p>"In validating that hypothesis, we provide additional support to this understanding of heat domes on Earth."</p>



<p>According to Keaveney, more modeling work will not only refine these findings but also provide insight into the initial formation of the Great Red Spot.</p>

Infants, interesting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/infants-show-creativity-skills-even-before-they-can-talk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">little humans</a>, use their mother's scent to perceive faces.</p>



<p>A team of researchers from various institutes embarked on a study to understand how infants use their mother’s scent to perceive faces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-infant-whiff-and-see-phenomenon">The infant "whiff and see" phenomenon </h2>



<p>The findings are as intriguing as the concept itself. Turns out, younger infants benefit the most from their mother's scent when it comes to perceiving faces. </p>



<p>This ability, the researchers found, greatly improves between four and 12 months. The older infants, however, rely primarily on visual information to perceive faces, needing no concurrent cues.</p>



<p>Dr. Arnaud Leleu is an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience and an expert in the Center for Taste, Smell and Feeding Sciences (CSGA) at the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon, France. Dr. Leleu was pivotal to this research. So, let's hear his take on this discovery.</p>



<p>"I have a longstanding interest in how sensory perception works in the human brain. Despite its apparent simplicity (e.g., we open our eyes to see), perception is a complex neurocognitive ability derived from past experience with various stimulations coming from all the senses at the same time."</p>



<p>Therefore, said Dr. Leleu, describing how multisensory inputs are treated by the young infant brain is critical to understand perception in the different senses and its development until adulthood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-infants-rely-on-mothers-scent">Infants rely on mothers' scent</h2>



<p>Dr. Leleu's interest in sensory perception, particularly how multisensory inputs are processed in the young brain, led him to this unique study. He wanted to investigate if and how olfaction fosters and shapes the development of visual perception in the infant brain.</p>



<p>The study found that the rapid perception of faces, enhanced by the mother’s odor, declined as infants grew older and became more efficient at perceiving faces solely from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visual-diets-of-infants-provide-the-building-blocks-of-human-vision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visual cues</a>. </p>



<p>This finding underlines the role of olfaction in visual perception of developing infants until the visual system becomes effective independently.</p>

<p>"Together with the large body of research on multisensory perception in infants, our findings reveal the importance of the early exposure to concurrent sensory inputs from different modalities for perceptual learning," noted Dr. Leleu.</p>



<p>"Such early exposure to repeated intersensory associations is also a building block for the later development of higher-level abilities such as semantic memory, language and conceptual reasoning. It is therefore important to expose infants to a variety of cues related to the same objects as early as possible."</p>



<p>For instance, said Dr. Leleu, infants would learn better what an apple is by seeing its shape and color, hearing the sound it makes when taking a bite of it, smelling its odor, touching its shape and texture.</p>



<p>"Moreover, given that our findings highlight the importance of the sense of smell in this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-do-babies-start-gaining-their-consciousness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early concert of the senses</a>, every sensory modality should be considered when stimulating young infants, not only hearing and vision."</p>

<p>What surprised Dr. Leleu the most was the significant effect of the mother’s odor on the perception of various unfamiliar faces in infants. </p>

<p>Some primates have bigger personalities than others, and surprisingly, it has nothing to do with size or strength. According to a recent study at <a href="https://www.ntu.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nottingham Trent University</a>, expressive faces in primates lead to stronger social connections, impacting their social structures.</p>



<p>The study was led by Dr. Jamie Whitehouse, a research fellow at NTU's School of Social Sciences, along with Professor Bridget Waller, a seasoned expert in Evolution and Social Behaviour at NTU.</p>

<p>The team ventured out to study nine social groups of rhesus macaques, each comprising one adult male, multiple adult females, and offspring. </p>



<p>To analyze the facial expressions of the dominant male in each group, the researchers used a specially designed coding system called MaqFACS. This clever system tracks 17 different facial muscle movements, revealing the spectrum of expressivity.</p>



<p>To tie these measurements to social connections, the team observed the lives of 66 monkeys across the groups. They measured how often each pair spent time together, the intensity of their friendly grooming interactions, and the social status each primate held within their group.</p>

<p>"Early bird gets the worm," they say. And our very own celestial early bird, the Sun, seems to be rising ahead of its time, already starting its next solar chapter, solar cycle 26, while being halfway through the current one. </p>



<p>Why is the Sun in such a hurry?</p>



<p>The scientist behind this discovery is Dr. Rachel Howe, a research fellow at the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a>. </p>



<p>Dr. Howe, working in collaboration with international analysts, has been tracking the sun's internal sound waves and their contribution to its rotation cycle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovering-solar-cycle-26">Discovering Solar Cycle 26</h2>



<p>The Sun’s activity cycle, known as the solar cycle, spans approximately 11 years. <p>At the solar maximum, the Sun’s magnetic field undergoes a polar flip, akin to swapping poles. This natural process influences space weather and can have significant impacts on Earth’s magnetic field and satellite operations. </p>



<p>We are currently in Cycle 25, which commenced in 2019 and is anticipated to continue until 2025.</p>



<p>However, Dr. Howe and her research team have identified something intriguing. Preliminary signs of the subsequent solar cycle, Cycle 26, appear to be emerging earlier than expected. </p>



<p>These early indicators include the formation of new sunspots and subtle shifts in the Sun’s magnetic field, heralding the arrival of the next cycle.</p>



<p>This discovery prompts an engaging question: What might this premature activity signify? Could it indicate a more intense and turbulent solar cycle ahead, or does it suggest that our understanding of solar dynamics needs reevaluation?</p>

<p>Measured by the Sun's internal sound waves, the pattern of solar torsional oscillation reveals bands rotating at different speeds. </p>



<p>During the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/suns-fury-secrets-of-solar-energy-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activity cycle</a>, these bands drift towards the Sun's equator and its poles. These accelerated rotation belts typically emerge before the official commencement of the next solar cycle.</p>



<p>"It's exciting to see the first hint that the pattern will repeat again in Cycle 26, which is due to start in about six years," expressed Dr. Howe.</p>



<p>To get a grasp of these solar stirrings, astronomers use helioseismic data from various observatories and satellites. The data, dating back to 1995, offers an opportunity for comparison across various solar cycles.</p>

<p>Every year, thousands of people worldwide succumb to the lethal amounts of cobra venom injected into their bodies through bites. </p>



<p>These victims, often living in rural or impoverished regions with limited access to medical care, face not only the immediate threat of death but also the harrowing aftermath of envenomation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-cobra-venom">Impacts of cobra venom</h2>



<p>Insidiously, the venom causes necrosis, the death of body tissue and cells, which often leads to severe complications, including the necessity for amputation of the affected limbs. </p>



<p>This devastating process not only inflicts excruciating pain but also results in long-term disability and a significant reduction in quality of life.</p>



<p>Current treatments - mostly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universal-antivenom-to-heal-all-snakebites-is-closer-to-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antivenoms</a> - barely tackle the necrotic effects of the venom and come with a heavy price tag, making them inaccessible to many who need them the most.</p>



<p>The financial burden and limited effectiveness of these treatments highlight the urgent need for more affordable and efficient solutions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-groundbreaking-cobra-venom-treatment">Groundbreaking cobra venom treatment</h2>



<p>Scientists based out of Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, and the UK have made a game-changing breakthrough that could drastically reduce the life-threatening and devastating effects of cobra venom.</p>



<p>"Snakebites kill an estimated 138,000 people each year, with another 400,000 people experiencing long-term morbidity," noted the study authors.</p>



<p>"Most of these envenomings occur in sub-Saharan Africa and South or Southeast Asia and disproportionately affect young adults and children."</p>



<p>At the heart of their discovery is a widely available and affordable blood thinner known as heparin.</p>



<p>“Our discovery could drastically reduce the terrible injuries from necrosis caused by cobra bites – and it might also slow the venom, which could improve survival rates," noted study co-author Professor Greg Neely from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-heparin-to-combat-cobra-venom">Using heparin to combat cobra venom</h2>



<p>The researchers utilized CRISPR gene-editing technology to identify ways to block cobra venom. They successfully 'repurposed' heparin and related drugs, demonstrating their effectiveness in stopping the necrosis caused by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/venomous-snake-bites-are-more-likely-to-occur-in-warmer-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cobra bite</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/venomous-snake-bites-are-more-likely-to-occur-in-warmer-weather/">s</a>.</p>



<p>“Heparin is inexpensive, ubiquitous, and a World Health Organization-listed Essential Medicine," said study lead author Tian Du, a PhD student at the University of Sydney.</p>



<p>"After successful human trials, it could be rolled out relatively quickly to become a cheap, safe, and effective drug for treating cobra bites.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-the-discovery">The science behind the discovery</h2>



<p>The researchers used CRISPR to identify the human genes that cobra <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-developed-an-immunity-to-cobra-venom/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">venom</a> needs to initiate necrosis, killing the flesh around the bite.</p>



<p>One of venom's targets are enzymes necessary for producing molecules heparan and heparin, which many human and animal cells produce. </p>



<p>The venom can bind to both molecules due to their similar structure, and the scientists used this information to create an antidote capable of stopping necrosis in human cells and mice.</p>



<p>The newly discovered heparinoid drugs function differently from traditional antivenoms. They act as a "decoy," flooding the bite site with heparin sulfate or related heparinoid molecules.</p>



<p>The decoy molecules bind to and neutralize the venom toxins responsible for tissue damage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-implications-of-the-discovery">Global implications of the discovery</h2>



<p>Professor Nicholas Casewell, head of the Centre for Snakebite Research &amp; Interventions at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, emphasized that snakebites disproportionately impact people in poor, rural communities. </p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snakebites-caused-over-63000-deaths-in-2019/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snakebites</a> remain the deadliest of the neglected tropical diseases, with its burden landing overwhelmingly on rural communities in low- and middle-income countries."</p>



<p>Cobra bites, which inject lethal amounts of cobra venom, are one of the leading causes of snakebite incidents in some regions of India and Africa.</p>



<p>The World Health Organization has categorized snakebite as a priority in its program for tackling neglected tropical diseases, aiming to halve the global burden of snakebite by 2030. This new discovery can be instrumental in achieving that goal.</p>



<p>“That target is just five years away now. We hope that the new cobra antidote we found can assist in the global fight to reduce death and injury from snakebite in some of the world’s poorest communities," said Professor Neely.</p>



<p>This research is just one more example of how scientists worldwide are striving to use modern scientific techniques to combat age-old global health challenges.</p>

<p>Welcome to an era where deepfakes - artificial images created through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lawless-superintelligence-zero-evidence-ai-control-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">artificial intelligence</a> (AI) - are becoming increasingly easy to produce.</p>



<p>These AI-generated creations, with their potential to heavily distort reality and propagate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-deception-is-a-growing-issue-that-we-cannot-control/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI deception</a>, are a major concern.</p>



<p>But what if we could expose these deceptive images simply by analyzing the reflections in a person’s eyes?</p>



<p>This is the central focus of research that was recently presented at the Royal Astronomical Society’s <a href="http://www.apple.com/uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Astronomy Meeting</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-eyes-betray-deepfakes">Human eyes betray deepfakes </h2>



<p>The study argues that human eyes can betray deepfakes, and the technique to expose them aligns fascinatingly with the methods astronomers employ to decode images of galaxies.</p>



<p>The primary crux of this research, led by MSc student Adejumoke Owolabi from the <a href="https://www.hull.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Hull</a>, lies in analyzing the reflection in an individual's eyes.</p>



<p>According to the study, if the reflections in both eyes are identical, this suggests the image is real. On the other hand, if the eye reflections are not matching, this discrepancy is a strong indicator of a deepfake.</p>



<p>Kevin Pimbblet is a professor of astrophysics and the director of the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Modeling at the University of Hull.</p>



<p>"The reflections in the eyeballs are consistent for the real person, but incorrect (from a physics point of view) for the fake person," explained Professor Pimbblet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-matter-of-deepfakes">Dark matter of deepfakes</h2>



<p>To dig deeper into this matter, the researchers scrutinized the reflections of light on the eyeballs in both real and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distinguishing-ai-generated-images-of-people-from-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI-generated</a> images.</p>



<p>For their analysis, the team adopted the techniques typically used in astronomy to quantify these reflections and ensured they were consistent between the left and right eyes.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers noticed that fake images often failed to maintain consistency in the reflections between each eye. On the other hand, real images generally exhibited identical reflections in both eyes.</p>



<p>"To measure the shapes of galaxies, we analyze whether they're centrally compact, whether they're symmetric, and how smooth they are," said Professor Pimbblet.</p>



<p>"We analyze the light distribution. We detect the reflections in an automated way and run their morphological features through the CAS [concentration, asymmetry, smoothness] and Gini indices to compare similarity between left and right eyeballs. The findings show that deepfakes have some differences between the pair."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-behind-the-light">The science behind the light</h2>



<p>The Gini coefficient, a measurement typically used to assess light distribution in the image of a galaxy, was also utilized in this deepfake detection study. </p>



<p>Images of galaxies are arranged in ascending order of flux, and these results are compared against what would be anticipated form a perfectly even flux distribution.</p>



<p>However, the CAS parameters, originally developed by astronomers to measure light distribution of galaxies and determine their morphology, was found ineffective as a predictor of fake eyes.</p>



<p>Professor Pimbblet cautions that this method is not foolproof. He said that it's important to note that this is not a silver bullet for detecting fake images. </p>



<p>"There are false positives and false negatives; it's not going to get everything. But this method provides us with a basis, a plan of attack, in the arms race to detect deepfakes."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-threat-of-deepfakes">Growing threat of deepfakes</h2>



<p>Deepfakes are not just a technological curiosity; they pose a significant threat to society. </p>



<p>These AI-generated fake videos and images can be used to spread misinformation, create fraudulent identities, and even manipulate public opinion. </p>



<p>As the technology behind these forgeries becomes more sophisticated, it becomes increasingly challenging to distinguish between real and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-are-some-people-fascinated-by-fake-news/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fake content</a>. This has serious implications for trust in media, security, and personal privacy.</p>



<p>Governments and organizations worldwide are beginning to recognize the potential dangers. Efforts are being made to develop more sophisticated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deepfake-detection-inauthentic-content-lacks-telltale-signs-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deepfake detection</a> tools and to establish legal frameworks to address the misuse of this technology.</p>

<p>Europa, a moon of Jupiter, and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, have subsurface oceans beneath their ice crusts that may harbor life.</p>



<p>A NASA experiment suggests that if these oceans harbor life, the organic molecules (e.g., amino acids, nucleic acids) that could signal life might survive just beneath the surface ice despite harsh radiation. </p>



<p>This discovery means that robotic landers sent to these moons wouldn’t need to dig very deep to find signs of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sampling-the-subsurface-oceans-nbsp">Sampling the subsurface oceans&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Based on our experiments, the ‘safe’ sampling depth for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-building-blocks-may-have-formed-near-newborn-stars-and-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amino acids</a> on Europa is almost eight inches (around 20 centimeters) at high latitudes of the trailing hemisphere (hemisphere opposite to the direction of Europa’s motion around Jupiter) in the area where the surface hasn’t been disturbed much by meteorite impacts,” said lead author Alexander Pavlov, an astronomer at NASA’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a> in Greenbelt, Maryland. </p>



<p>Pavlov noted that subsurface sampling is not required for the detection of amino acids on Enceladus – these molecules will survive radiolysis (breakdown by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radiation-made-earth-uninhabitable-for-much-longer-than-expected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radiation</a>) at any location on the Enceladus surface less than a tenth of an inch (under a few millimeters) from the surface.</p>



<p>These nearly airless moons are inhospitable on their surfaces due to high radiation from their host planet’s magnetic fields and cosmic events like exploding stars.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, their subsurface oceans, heated by tidal forces, could potentially harbor life if they also contain the necessary elements and compounds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-radiolysis-experiments-nbsp">Radiolysis experiments&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research team conducted radiolysis experiments using <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-blocks-of-life-found-in-asteroids-were-formed-in-cold-regions-of-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amino acids</a> as representatives of potential biomolecules. </p>



<p>Amino acids can be created by both biological and non-biological processes, but finding specific types on these moons could be a sign of life since they are used to build proteins by terrestrial life.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/proteins-identified-that-allowed-vertebrates-to-evolve/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proteins</a> are crucial for life as they form enzymes that speed up or regulate chemical reactions and create structures. </p>



<p>The team tested the survival of amino acids under conditions simulating those on Europa and Enceladus by mixing them with ice and exposing them to gamma-rays.</p>



<p>The experts also tested amino acids within dead bacteria and mixed with silicate dust to simulate possible mixing with meteorite material.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rates-of-amino-acid-destruction-nbsp">Rates of amino acid destruction&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The experiments helped determine the rates at which amino acids break down under radiation, called radiolysis constants. </p>



<p>This data allowed the team to calculate the depths and locations on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-life-on-europa-co2-discovery-by-webb-increases-the-odds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Europa</a> and Enceladus where amino acids would survive radiolytic destruction.</p>



<p>The experiments showed that amino acids degraded faster when mixed with dust but slower when originating from microorganisms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Slow rates of amino acid destruction in biological samples under Europa and Enceladus-like surface conditions bolster the case for future life-detection measurements by Europa and Enceladus lander missions,” said Pavlov.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our results indicate that the rates of potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-building-block-of-life-called-tna-created-in-the-lab/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">organic biomolecules</a>’ degradation in silica-rich regions on both Europa and Enceladus are higher than in pure ice and, thus, possible future missions to Europa and Enceladus should be cautious in sampling silica-rich locations on both icy moons.”</p>



<p>The research team suggests that bacterial cellular material may protect amino acids from reactive compounds produced by radiation, potentially explaining why amino acids survived longer in bacteria.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-missions-aiming-to-detect-life">Future missions aiming to detect life</h2>



<p>The study provides crucial data for future missions aiming to detect life on these icy moons, indicating that amino acids and other biomolecules could be found at relatively shallow depths.</p>



<p>Understanding the survival rates of amino acids and other biomolecules under the conditions found on Europa and Enceladus is critical for astrobiology and the search for life on these moons. </p>



<p>If life exists in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-evidence-jupiter-moon-europa-deep-ocean-shifting-icy-shell/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">subsurface oceans </a>of these moons, the organic molecules essential for life processes might be transported to the surface by geological activity such as geysers or through the slow churning of the ice crust.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These findings are vital as they inform the design and implementation of future missions that will search for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/james-webb-detects-signs-of-life-on-exoplanet-k2-18b/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">signs of life</a> on these moons. The goal is to ensure that the sampling methods are sufficient to detect the preserved organic molecules that could indicate biological processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-where-to-search-for-life">Predicting where to search for life</h2>



<p>Additionally, the study's findings underscore the importance of selecting the right locations for sampling. Areas with less silica-rich dust might be more promising for detecting preserved amino acids.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A recent revelation is set to reshape our perception of the Milky Way galaxy. A research team led by Dr. Florian Peißker from the <a href="https://www.uni-koeln.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cologne</a> has stumbled upon an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/featherweight-black-holes-may-soon-be-revealed-by-nasa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unusual phenomenon</a> at the center of our galaxy - another intermediate-mass black hole.</p>



<p>Black holes, especially of the intermediate-mass variety, are one of the biggest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/high-speed-stars-reveal-hidden-black-hole-in-omega-centauri/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mysteries</a> in the universe. Despite herculean research efforts, only a handful, approximately ten, have been detected to date.</p>



<p>According to scientific consensus, these celestial anomalies likely formed shortly after the Big Bang and play a crucial role as "seeds" in the formation and growth of supermassive black holes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-center-of-the-milky-way">Center of the Milky Way</h2>



<p>Dr. Peißker and his team were studying a cluster of stars known as IRS 13, located incredibly close (0.1 light years) to the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy known as Sagittarius A* (SgrA*).</p>



<p>For perspective, 0.1 light years is a short distance in astronomical terms, but in earthly distances, it equates to venturing to and fro between one end of our solar system to the other, twenty times. These astronomical numbers serve as a reminder of the sheer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-hole-waterfall-discovery-proves-einstein-right-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vastness of the cosmos</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stars-moving-in-an-odd-manner">Stars moving in an odd manner</h2>



<p>The stars in IRS 13 were moving in an unexpectedly orderly manner. Differing from the expected random arrangement of stars, the precise pattern suggested two possible scenarios. </p>



<p>First, IRS 13 might be interacting with SgrA*, leading to the stars' orderly motion. Second, there could be something within IRS 13 that help maintain its observed compact shape.</p>



<p>What could that be? The answer lies in our central mystery - the intermediate-mass black hole.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intermediate-mass-black-hole-in-the-star-cluster">Intermediate-mass black hole in the star cluster</h2>



<p>After multi-wavelength observations using the Chandra, ALMA, and Very Large telescopes, the conclusion emerged. The compact shape of IRS 13 potentially stemmed from the presence of an intermediate-mass black hole at the center of the star cluster.</p>



<p>Supporting this theory were additional observations of characteristic X-rays and ionized gas rotating at breakneck speeds of several hundred km/s in a ring around where they suspected the intermediate-mass black hole was located.</p>



<p>Adding to this was the unusually high density of the star cluster, higher than any known density of a star cluster in our Milky Way. "IRS 13 appears to be an essential building block for the growth of our central black hole SgrA*," said Dr. Peißker.</p>

A recent revelation is set to reshape our perception of...

<p>Most people view sleep and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-daydream-to-awareness-the-brains-alert-mechanism/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wakefulness</a> as two distinct states, clearly separating our daily activities.</p>



<p>Traditional neuroscience has anchored this perspective, defining sleep by the long, slow waves that traverse our brain. Now, pioneering research has unveiled intriguing details that challenge this belief.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-sleeping-brain">The sleeping brain</h2>



<p>The researchers have found that sleep can be detected by neural activity patterns lasting for just milliseconds - 1,000 times shorter than a second.</p>



<p>What's more, they discovered that small areas of the brain could briefly "flicker" <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parasomnia-awake-dream-exploring-sleepwalking-deep-mind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">awake</a>, while the rest of the brain is asleep, and the opposite can also occur. </p>



<p>These revelations open up fresh avenues to explore and understand the fundamental <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-waves-move-in-opposite-ways-to-make-memories-and-to-remember/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain wave patterns</a> that govern consciousness.</p>



<p>The research is a collaboration between the laboratories of Professor Keith Hengen at <a href="https://wustl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington University in St. Louis</a> and Professor David Haussler at <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Cruz</a>, with crucial contributions from Ph.D. students, David Parks (UCSC) and Aidan Schneider (WashU).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-a-state">What is a state?</h2>



<p>Professor Hengen highlighted the significant implications of their discovery. He said that with powerful tools and new computational methods, there’s so much to be gained by challenging our most basic assumptions and revisiting the question of "what is a state?" </p>



<p>"Sleep or wake is the single greatest determinant of your behavior, and then everything else falls out from there. So if we don't understand what sleep and wake actually are, it seems like we’ve missed the boat.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-micro-naps-in-the-brain">Micro-naps in the brain</h2>



<p>Professor Haussler noted that the research revealed different parts of the brain "taking little <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-afternoon-naps-impact-our-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">naps</a>" while other regions remain awake.</p>



<p>"It was surprising to us as scientists to find that different parts of our brains actually take little naps when the rest of the brain is awake. Many people may have already suspected this in their spouse, so perhaps a lack of male-female bias is what is surprising.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-activity-patterns-by-the-millisecond">Brain activity patterns by the millisecond </h2>



<p>In the course of their four-year research, Parks and Schneider trained a neural network to scrutinize patterns within an enormous amount of brain wave data. </p>



<p>Ultimately, the team observed patterns occurring at extremely high frequencies, challenging foundational beliefs about the neurological basis of sleep and wake states.</p>



<p>Studying brain data that lasted for only a millisecond, the researchers found that the model could differentiate between sleep and wake states. This remarkable finding confirmed that the model wasn’t relying on the slow-moving waves to learn the difference.</p>



<p>“The previous feeling was that nothing would be found there, that all the relevant information was in the slower frequency waves," said Professor Haussler. </p>



<p>"This paper says if you ignore the conventional measurements and just look at the details of the high-frequency measurement over just a thousandth of a second, there is enough there to tell if the tissue is asleep or not."</p>



<p>According to Professor Haussler, this tells us that there is something going on a very fast scale - that's a new hint to what might be going on in sleep.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncovering-neural-flickers">Uncovering neural "flickers" </h2>



<p>Upon further investigation of these high-speed activity patterns, the researchers discovered another surprising phenomenon, which they refer to as "flickers."</p>



<p>These are instances where, for a split second, one region of the brain would be awake while the rest were asleep, and vice versa. </p>



<p>These flickers don't adhere to the traditional neuroscience rules governing the strict cycle between wake, non-REM sleep, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-dreams-help-us-organize-our-experiences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">REM sleep</a>, further defying standard beliefs on sleep dynamics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-sleep-research">The future of sleep research </h2>



<p>These groundbreaking findings pave the way for a deeper understanding and potential treatments of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases, both of which are closely associated with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blood-test-detects-sleep-deprivation-over-24-hours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep dysregulation</a>. </p>



<p>The research holds promise for developing new diagnostic tools and therapies that target the specific neural mechanisms involved in these conditions. </p>



<p>“The more we understand fundamentally about what sleep and wake are, the more we can address pertinent clinical and disease-related problems," said Professor Hengen.</p>



<p>This knowledge could revolutionize our approach to treating a wide range of disorders linked to sleep, from insomnia and sleep apnea to more complex neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's and autism.</p>

This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.</p>

<p>The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.</p>



<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



<p>This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
