<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>The spectacular sights of large flocks of flamingos around East Africa’s lakes, immortalized in films like "Out of Africa" and David Attenborough’s "A Perfect Planet," might soon become a thing of the past, according to new research from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> (KCL).&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study indicates that the lesser flamingo of East Africa is at risk of losing its historical feeding grounds due to rising water levels, which are diminishing their main food source, with potentially grave implications for the species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flamingo-feeding-lakes-in-east-africa-nbsp">Flamingo feeding lakes in East Africa&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers used satellite earth observation data to analyze all significant flamingo feeding lakes in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania over two decades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The analysis revealed that increasing water levels are curtailing the availability of food for these birds. This situation may force the flamingos to migrate to new, unprotected areas, particularly with expected higher rainfall from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/safety-on-frozen-lakes-declining-due-to-climate-change/">climate change</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coordinated-conservation-efforts-are-needed">Coordinated conservation efforts are needed</h2>



<p>The scientists involved in the study are now urging for coordinated conservation efforts across borders, enhanced monitoring, and more sustainable land management practices around key flamingo habitats.</p>



<p>“Lesser flamingos in East Africa are increasingly vulnerable, particularly with increased rainfall predicted for the region under climate change. Without improved lake monitoring and catchment management practices, the highly specialized species found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-on-earth-may-have-first-sparked-in-shallow-soda-lakes/">soda lake</a> ecosystems – including lesser flamingos - could be lost,” said study lead author Aidan Byrne, a PhD student at KCL.</p>



<p>The study is the first to use satellite data to assess all 22 essential flamingo feeding soda lakes in East Africa, while also including climate records and bird observation data spanning more than two decades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-degradation-of-flamingo-habitats-nbsp">Degradation of flamingo habitats&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dr. Emma Tebbs, a co-author from King’s College London, noted the inherent adaptability of flamingos but expressed concern over the degradation of their habitats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“East African populations could potentially move north or south away from the equator in search of food resources. And whilst six study lakes increased in habitat suitability from 2010 to 2022, only three of those have some level of conservation protection. Increases in water levels could lead to lesser flamingos becoming more reliant on lakes that are unprotected, outside of current nature reserves and protected sites, which has implications for conservation and ecotourism revenues,” explained Dr. Tebbs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-characteristics-of-the-soda-lakes">Shifting characteristics of the soda lakes</h2>



<p>Soda lakes are among the most extreme environments on the planet, characterized by high salinity and alkalinity. Nonetheless, various species, including flamingos and their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/phytoplankton-resilient-nutrient-stress/">phytoplankton</a> prey, have adapted to flourish under these conditions. Flamingos, for instance, utilize their specialized, sieve-like beaks to filter these microscopic plants from the water.</p>



<p>The study revealed that increasing water levels are diluting the typical saline and alkaline characteristics of the region’s soda lakes, which is leading to a reduction in phytoplankton populations. This decrease was quantified by measuring the levels of chlorophyll-a, a photosynthetic pigment found in the lakes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decline-in-phytoplankton-levels-nbsp">Decline in phytoplankton levels&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Over the 23 years covered by the study, the researchers observed a consistent decline in phytoplankton levels, correlating this trend with the expanding surface areas of these lakes during the same timeframe.</p>



<p>The most significant declines in phytoplankton biomass were recorded in the equatorial lakes of Kenya - specifically, the popular tourist destinations of Lakes Bogoria, Nakuru, and Elmenteita, as well as in the northern Tanzanian lakes that experienced the greatest increases in surface area.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viable-breeding-sites-for-flamingos">Viable breeding sites for flamingos</h2>



<p>Lake Nakuru, a crucial feeding site for over one million flamingos historically, saw its surface area swell by 91% between 2009 and 2022, while the average concentration of chlorophyll-a in the lake dropped by half.</p>



<p>Lake Natron in Tanzania, the primary regular breeding ground for lesser flamingos in East Africa, has also seen a drop in productivity coinciding with the rising water levels in recent years. Should this decline in phytoplankton biomass persist at Lake Natron and other adjacent feeding lakes, these areas may no longer be viable as breeding sites for the flamingos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-lesser-flamingos-of-east-africa-nbsp">More about lesser flamingos of East Africa&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Lesser flamingos are one of the most interesting and vibrant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pink-flamingos-once-thrived-in-the-australian-outback/">bird species</a> found in East Africa. They are smaller than their relative, the greater flamingo, and are noted for their stunning pink feathers which gain their color from the carotenoid pigments in their algae-based diet.</p>



<p>A significant characteristic of lesser flamingos is their dependence on alkaline or saline lakes for breeding. They are highly gregarious birds, forming large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flamingos-of-a-feather-flock-together/">flocks</a> that can number in the thousands, which helps reduce the threat of predation.</p>



<p>East Africa hosts some of the world’s most important habitats for these birds, including Lake Natron in Tanzania and Lake Bogoria in Kenya. The conservation status of lesser flamingos is of concern due to habitat degradation and water pollution affecting their food supply and breeding sites.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A new study led by <a href="https://home.dartmouth.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dartmouth College</a> has revealed that frequent seafood eaters may be at increased risk for exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-source-water-exceeds-safe-drinking-limits-of-pfas/">PFAS</a>), a group of persistent, synthetic chemicals often referred to as “forever chemicals.” </p>



<p>As a consequence, the experts emphasize the need for stricter public health policies to define safe levels of seafood consumption to minimize exposure to PFAS. </p>



<p>This is particularly critical in coastal regions like New England, where longstanding industrial activity and PFAS contamination intersect with a strong cultural affinity for seafood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risk-benefit-trade-off-for-seafood-consumption-nbsp">Risk-benefit trade-off for seafood consumption&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Our recommendation isn't to not eat seafood - seafood is a great source of lean protein and omega fatty acids. But it also is a potentially underestimated source of PFAS exposure in humans,” said senior author Megan Romano, an associate professor of epidemiology at Dartmouth.</p>



<p>“Understanding this risk-benefit trade-off for seafood consumption is important for people making decisions about diet, especially for vulnerable populations such as pregnant people and children.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfas-concentrations-in-commonly-consumed-seafood">PFAS concentrations in commonly consumed seafood</h2>



<p>The research included an analysis of PFAS concentrations in commonly consumed seafood in New Hampshire, complemented by a statewide survey on eating habits. </p>



<p>Given that inhabitants from New Hampshire and the broader New England rank among the highest seafood consumers nationally, this region provided a perfect setting for studying PFAS exposure through marine diets.</p>



<p>“Most existing research focuses on PFAS levels in freshwater species, which are not what people primarily eat. We saw that as a knowledge gap in the literature, especially for a New England state where we know people love their seafood,” Romano said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-and-impacts-of-pfas-in-seafood">Origins and impacts of PFAS in seafood</h2>



<p>The scientists also examined extensive data from New Hampshire concerning the origins and impacts of PFAS, chemicals widely used in consumer products like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-containers-may-release-forever-chemicals-into-food/">plastics</a> and nonstick coatings.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In humans, PFAS have been linked to several health issues, including cancer, fetal abnormalities, and disorders affecting the thyroid, liver, and reproductive systems. </p>



<p>They have permeated environments worldwide, accumulating in soil, water, and wildlife, with nearly all Americans showing detectable levels in their blood.</p>



<p>“PFAS are not limited to manufacturing, fire-fighting foams, or municipal waste streams—they are a decades-long global challenge,” explained co-author Jonathan Petali, a toxicologist at the <a href="https://www.des.nh.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services</a>. </p>



<p>“New Hampshire was among the first states to identify PFAS in drinking water. We're a data-rich state due to years spent investigating the impacts of PFAS and trying to mitigate exposure.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-highest-pfas-concentrations-found-in-shrimp-and-lobster">Highest PFAS concentrations found in shrimp and lobster</h2>



<p>The analysis measured 26 types of PFAS in several marine species - including cod, haddock, lobster, salmon, scallop, shrimp, and tuna - all purchased fresh from a market in coastal New Hampshire and sourced from various regions. </p>



<p>The highest PFAS concentrations were found in shrimp and lobster, with certain compounds reaching up to 1.74 and 3.30 nanograms per gram, respectively.</p>



<p>The widespread presence of PFAS in the environment complicates efforts to trace how these chemicals infiltrate the marine food chain. </p>



<p>Certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shellfish-consumed-by-humans-are-ironically-more-resistant-to-extinction/">shellfish</a> might be more susceptible to accumulating PFAS due to their feeding habits and habitat on the seafloor, coupled with their closeness to coastal PFAS sources. </p>



<p>In a similar vein, larger marine species could absorb PFAS by consuming smaller creatures that tend to accumulate these chemicals in their bodies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evaluation-of-pfas-consumption-levels-from-seafood">Evaluation of PFAS consumption levels from seafood</h2>



<p>The experts carried out a survey involving 1,829 residents from New Hampshire to assess seafood <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dietary-shift-to-forage-fish-could-prevent-millions-of-deaths/">consumption</a> levels in the state, which proved to be substantial. </p>



<p>The results revealed that men in New Hampshire consume slightly more than one ounce of seafood daily, while women consume slightly less than one ounce. </p>



<p>These figures surpass those recorded for men and women in the Northeast by the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey</a> and are over 1.5 times the national average for both genders. </p>



<p>For children aged 2 to 11 in New Hampshire, the daily seafood intake was around 0.2 ounces, placing them at the upper limit nationally.</p>



<p>Approximately 95% of the adults surveyed indicated they had eaten seafood within the last year, with 94% of them having consumed fish or shellfish in the month prior to the survey. Over two-thirds of this group had eaten seafood in the week before the survey.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seafood-consumption-varies-by-region">Seafood consumption varies by region</h2>



<p>However, seafood consumption varies across New Hampshire. Over half of the individuals who consumed seafood the week before the survey resided along the state’s coastal areas or near the Massachusetts border. </p>



<p>More than 60% of residents with household incomes below $45,000 per year reported eating seafood at least weekly, in contrast to those with higher incomes, who reported less frequent consumption.</p>



<p>Among the seafood tested for PFAS, shrimp, haddock, and salmon were eaten by more than 70% of adults who consumed seafood at least once a month. Lobster was on the menu for just over 54% of these adults. Among children, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-salmon-can-help-lower-your-cholesterol/">salmon</a>, canned tuna, shrimp, and haddock were the most commonly eaten.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-establishing-consumption-advisories">Establishing consumption advisories</h2>



<p>According to co-author Celia Chen, a biologist at Dartmouth, despite existing federal guidelines that regulate mercury and other contaminants in seafood, no such guidelines are in place for PFAS. </p>



<p>“Top predator species such as tuna and sharks are known to contain high concentrations of mercury, so we can use that knowledge to limit exposure. But it's less clear for PFAS, especially if you start looking at how the different compounds behave in the environment,” she said.</p>



<p>Lead author Kathryn Crawford, an assistant professor of environmental studies at <a href="https://www.middlebury.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Middlebury College</a>, stressed the importance of establishing consumption advisories tailored for those most vulnerable to pollution.</p>



<p>“Seafood consumption advisories often provide advice for those individuals that is more conservative than for the rest of the population. People who eat a balanced diet with more typical, moderate amounts of seafood should be able to enjoy the health benefits of seafood without excessive risk of PFAS exposure,” she concluded.</p>

<p>Christian Ginski, a <a href="https://www.universityofgalway.ie/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Galway</a> lecturer and study lead author, highlights a major shift in astronomical research. He states, "This marks a transition from studying single star systems to an overview of entire star-forming regions."</p>



<p>This change signifies a broadening of astronomical research. It shifts from individual observations to a vast survey of over 80 young stars, which may host forming planets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diversity-in-the-cosmos">Diversity in the cosmos</h2>



<p>The survey's findings shed light on the diversity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alien-worlds-unraveling-the-mysteries-of-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">over 5,000 exoplanets</a>. Importantly, they help us grasp the vast differences observed.</p>



<p>Moreover, the young stars are surrounded by intricate dust- and gas-rich discs. These discs are crucial for planet formation, situated in massive gas clouds. </p>



<p>They display a remarkable variety, showcasing the stages of planet creation. For instance, some have grand spiral arms and large cavities, while others appear serene and undisturbed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-visual-symphony-of-planet-formation">Visual symphony of planet formation</h2>



<p>Antonio Garufi, an astronomer, emphasizes the complexity of these discs. He notes, "Some display huge spiral arms from orbiting planets."</p>



<p>Additionally, he mentions, "Others have rings and cavities from forming planets." Meanwhile, some discs appear smooth and dormant amidst the activity.</p>



<p>The research focused on three star-forming areas in our galaxy. The Taurus and Chamaeleon I regions are about 600 light-years away. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/orion-nebula-destroys-an-oceans-worth-of-water-every-month/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Orion cloud</a>, known for massive stars, is 1600 light-years distant.</p>

<p>Pop culture has a habit of portraying single people as outgoing and socially adventurous, always ready to mingle and meet new people. But according to a recent study, there's a good chance that most single folks – happy ones included – actually prefer some quiet alone time. It all comes down to link between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/personality-is-more-important-than-finances-when-it-comes-to-dating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personality</a> and relationship status.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-personalities-and-their-relationships">Different personalities and their relationships</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a> wanted to find out if there was a connection between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nice-guys-relationship-satisfaction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personality</a> types and relationship status. Their study explored how factors like extroversion (how outgoing you are), conscientiousness (how organized and goal-oriented), and neuroticism (prone to anxiety or sadness) might affect whether someone is single, partnered up, and generally happy with life.</p>



<p>"As marriage rates decline and more people live alone, our study contributes to a more complex picture of single lives that goes beyond the misleading stereotype of the miserable single person," said study lead author Elaine Hoan.</p>



<p>The study surveyed over 1,800 folks between 20 and 59 years old who were currently either single or partnered.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-big-five-personalities-and-their-take-on-relationships">The "big five" personalities and their take on relationships</h2>



<p>The researchers used what's called the "Big Five" <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-and-their-humans-often-share-similar-personalities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">personality</a> model to understand the participants. This model looks at five key traits:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extroversion">Extroversion</h3>



<p>This trait reflects a preference for social interaction, high energy levels, and a tendency to seek out external stimulation. Highly extroverted individuals often thrive in group settings, draw energy from social gatherings, and may be perceived as assertive or talkative.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-agreeableness">Agreeableness</h3>



<p>Individuals high in agreeableness tend to prioritize cooperation, empathy, and maintaining social harmony. They are often described as kind, compassionate, and willing to put the needs of others before their own.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conscientiousness">Conscientiousness</h3>



<p>Conscientious individuals exhibit strong organization, responsibility, and goal-directed behavior. People high in conscientiousness are typically seen as reliable, disciplined, and capable of delaying gratification in pursuit of long-term objectives.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neuroticism">Neuroticism</h3>



<p>Neuroticism reflects a predisposition towards experiencing negative emotions such as anxiety, sadness, and emotional instability. Individuals scoring high in this trait may be more prone to worry, self-doubt, and mood fluctuations.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-openness">Openness</h3>



<p>Also sometimes referred to as "openness to experience," this trait encompasses a curiosity about the world, a willingness to embrace novelty, and a preference for intellectual stimulation. People high in openness often enjoy creative pursuits, unconventional ideas, and exploring new territories both physically and intellectually.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-personalities-do-relationships-differently">Different personalities do relationships differently</h2>



<p>The study revealed that extroversion (or introversion) was a strong indicator of someone's relationship status.</p>



<p>"In a world that caters to extroverts, introverts are misrepresented as antisocial," said Hoan. "The reality is, introverts enjoy their alone time and independence… So, an introvert may prefer being single more than being in a relationship."</p>



<p>Unsurprisingly, extroverts, whether single or partnered, tended to be happier overall. It also seems that being in a relationship might even make someone <em>more</em> outgoing, perhaps through building confidence or expanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-social-bonds-promote-healthy-behaviors/">social circles</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-other-personality-and-relationship-links">Other personality and relationship links</h2>



<p>The researchers also found – although less strongly – some links between being single and the following traits:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-conscientious-personality-and-relationship">Less conscientious personality and relationship</h3>



<p>The study revealed a correlation between being single and lower conscientiousness scores. Individuals scoring lower in this trait tended to describe themselves as less organized and less efficient in achieving goals. Highly conscientious people often orient themselves towards goals, including traditional life goals like marriage.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-neuroticism-and-relationship-status">More neuroticism and relationship status</h3>



<p>Single individuals also exhibited a tendency towards higher neuroticism scores. This means they were more likely to report feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emotional fluctuations. It's important to note the complexity of this link: on the one hand, these emotional tendencies could pose challenges in initiating and maintaining healthy romantic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agape-a-new-app-could-help-strengthen-romantic-relationships/">relationships</a>. </p>



<p>On the other hand, the emotional support and stability provided by a strong partnership could potentially mitigate these tendencies over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-personality-and-relationship-link">Significance of the personality and relationship link</h2>



<p>The central message of this research is that societal expectations should not dictate an individual's pursuit of happiness. The pressure to be in a romantic relationship is pervasive, sometimes leading people to feel inadequate or incomplete if they are single. </p>



<p>However, the study emphasizes that true happiness and well-being stem from embracing your unique identity and living authentically.</p>



<p>"There is stigma associated with being single - you know, people saying, 'You'd be happier if you were in a relationship, so why aren't you?' - when that's not necessarily true for everyone," said Hoan. "I hope what people take from our research is the idea that you don't have to be someone you're not - just be yourself."</p>

<p>The ground shakes and dust fills the air as massive herds of animals stampede across the African savanna, navigating rivers teeming with predators such as lions, hyenas, and crocodiles. </p>



<p>This spectacle, often presented by David Attenborough, Disney, and National Geographic, is the annual migration of 1.3 million wildebeest through Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. </p>



<p>The event not only draws hundreds of thousands of tourists but has also secured the Serengeti a place on UNESCO's <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">World Heritage List</a>. More than just a stunning display, this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grazing-succession-animal-herbivore-mass-migration-serengeti/">migration</a> is crucial for maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disrupted-migratory-routes-and-wildebeest-genetics">Disrupted migratory routes and wildebeest genetics</h2>



<p>However, migrations on this grand scale are now rare in Africa. Modern developments such as roads, fences, farms, and urban expansion have disrupted traditional migratory routes, limiting the wildebeest's ability to roam freely in search of fresh pastures and water. </p>



<p>According to a recent study led by the <a href="https://www.ku.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Copenhagen</a>, these disruptions have negatively impacted the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/genetic-advantages-animals/">genetic health</a> of the wildebeest populations.</p>



<p>"No one ever knew that this affected the genetics of wildebeest. But our results clearly show that wildebeest populations which no longer migrate, but have historically done so, are simply less genetically healthy than those that continue to migrate. And this weakens their chances of long-term survival," said senior author Rasmus Heller, an associate professor of biology at the University of Copenhagen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-degradation-of-stationary-wildebeest-populations-nbsp">Genetic degradation of stationary wildebeest populations&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study details how the genetic degradation of stationary populations manifests across various metrics used to evaluate genetic health in conservation efforts.</p>



<p>"Wildebeest that can no longer migrate have lower genetic diversity, are more genetically isolated and are more inbred. We expect this to lead to lower survival, reduced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-captivity-reproduce/">fertility</a> and other negative effects on fitness," explained lead author Xiaodong Liu, a postdoctoral fellow in biology at the same university.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-genetic-diversity-threatens-wildebeest-survival">Low genetic diversity threatens wildebeest survival</h2>



<p>"The long-term consequence is that populations with low <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/channel-island-foxes-threatened-by-low-genetic-diversity/">genetic diversity</a> are less equipped to cope with the effects of environmental changes. Their evolutionary potential is reduced. So, if climatic changes continue to occur, there isn’t as much genetic variation for them to work with to adapt – which could ultimately threaten their survival," Heller added.</p>



<p>This groundbreaking study involved the analysis of whole genomes from 121 wildebeest across their range from South Africa to Kenya, marking the first scientific investigation into the genetic effects of migration in this species.</p>



<p>"Because we studied the genomes of many wildebeest from virtually their entire range, we have been able to make a general genetic comparison of migratory versus non-migratory populations. And because we witness a consistent difference across multiple locations, the conclusion is clear. </p>



<p>Indeed, we can say that the overall negative effect is evident in those wildebeest that have been prevented from migrating – regardless of where they live on the continent," Liu said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-last-great-migrations-under-threat-nbsp">Last great migrations under threat&nbsp;</h2>



<p>With the last great <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grazing-succession-animal-herbivore-mass-migration-serengeti/">migrations</a> under threat from planned roads and railways, the future of these animals is uncertain. Previously, large wildebeest migrations were more common, but now only a few remain, including the significant migrations in the Serengeti-Mara and the Kalahari.</p>



<p>"However, in Botswana in particular, fencing to protect cattle from coming into contact with migratory wild animals was put up in recent times. Botswana's Kalahari population declined from roughly 260,000 in the 1970’s to fewer than 15,000 in the late 1980’s. So today, the only remaining large population is that of the Serengeti-Mara. But the Serengeti-Mara migration is also threatened by plans for roads and rail corridors through the area, which worries many," said co-author Mikkel Sinding, a biologist at the University of Copenhagen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildebeest-as-a-keystone-species-nbsp">Wildebeest as a keystone species&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The implications extend beyond individual species, impacting entire ecosystems and economic interests linked to tourism. “The migrations of wildebeest make them a keystone species in ecosystems, as their grazing keeps vegetation healthy, transports and distributes nutrients, while they themselves serve as prey for predators and carrion for scavengers,” explained co-author Joseph O. Ogutu, a senior statistician at the <a href="https://www.uni-hohenheim.de/en">University of Hohenheim</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Therefore, it isn’t just the iconic animal that we threaten when we prevent them from migrating – but many other species as well. And to that, we might add the enormous amount of tourism revenue that benefits governments and local communities.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-natural-migration-routes-nbsp">Preserving natural migration routes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers hope their findings will lead to further studies on other species and influence policy decisions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The study shows us that wild animal species, for whom migration is an essential part of their biology, struggle to survive in an increasingly human-dominated world, unless special attention is paid to preserving their old and natural migratory routes,” said Heller.</p>



<p>“As such, we hope that people will be more cautious about continuing to disrupt these routes. This concern is not just with regards to wildebeest, but also for other migratory species in Africa and elsewhere. If we want the species to not just exist for, say, the next 50 years, but to thrive and actually survive in the much longer term, we need to halt the genetic decay caused by curtailing their natural migration routes.”</p>

<p>An international team of researchers has stumbled upon a remarkable discovery -- the first regular <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/fractal-molecule_first-discovered-in-nature_credit-Max-Planck-Institut-Hochberg_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">molecular fractal</a> in nature. </p>



<p>This fascinating finding, led by groups from the <a href="https://www.mpi-marburg.mpg.de/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute</a> and the <a href="https://www.uni-marburg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Philipps University</a> in Marburg, Germany, has unveiled a microbial enzyme that spontaneously assembles into a pattern known as the Sierpinski triangle.</p>



<p>The enzyme, identified as citrate synthase from a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cyanobacteria-may-shed-new-light-on-the-history-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cyanobacterium</a>, was discovered by chance. "We stumbled on this structure completely by accident and almost couldn't believe what we saw when we first took images of it using an electron microscope," says Franziska Sendker, the study's first author.</p>

<p>"The protein makes these beautiful triangles and as the fractal grows, we see these larger and larger triangular voids in the middle of them, which is totally unlike any protein assembly we've ever seen before," Sendker explains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-molecular-structure">Unraveling the molecular structure</h2>



<p>To understand the unique properties of this enzyme, the research team collaborated with structural biologists at the University of Marburg to determine its molecular structure using electron microscopy. This process proved to be challenging due to the fractal nature of the assembly.</p>



<p>"This was one of the harder, but also more fascinating structures I have solved in my career," notes Jan Schuller, whose group helped determine the structure. </p>



<p>"The problem with determining the structure of a fractal is that our image averaging techniques kept getting confused by the fact that the smaller triangles can be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/origami-inspired-robots-mimic-the-behavior-of-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">substructures</a> of larger triangles. The algorithm kept homing in on these smaller triangles instead of seeing the larger structures they were part of," Schuller continued.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-the-rules-of-symmetry">Breaking the rules of symmetry</h2>



<p>The key to the fractal protein's unique assembly lies in its violation of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sunflower-family-tree-explains-evolution-of-flower-symmetry/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rule of symmetry</a>. </p>



<p>Unlike typical protein self-assembly, where each individual protein chain adopts the same arrangement relative to its neighbors, the fractal protein's assembly involves different protein chains making slightly different interactions at different positions in the fractal. </p>



<p>This asymmetry allows for the formation of the Sierpiński triangle with its large internal voids.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-evolutionary-accident">An evolutionary accident?</h2>



<p>Despite the fascinating nature of this discovery, the functional significance of the fractal assembly remains unclear. </p>



<p>Georg Hochberg, an evolutionary biologist and senior author of the study, suggests that it might be a harmless accident of evolution.</p>



<p>"Self-assembly is often used by evolution to regulate enzymes, but in this case the cyanobacterium that this enzyme is found in does not seem to care much whether or not its citrate synthase can assemble into a fractal," Hochberg explains. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-fractals-form-in-nature">How fractals form in nature</h2>



<p>When the team genetically manipulated the bacterium to prevent the fractal assembly, the cells grew just as well under various conditions.</p>



<p>To test their theory of an evolutionary accident, the researchers recreated the evolutionary development of the fractal arrangement in the laboratory. </p>



<p>By back-calculating the protein sequence of the fractal protein as it was millions of years ago and producing these ancient proteins biochemically, they discovered that the arrangement arose suddenly through a small number of mutations. </p>



<p>It was subsequently lost in several <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-investigate-the-origin-of-photosynthesis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cyanobacterial lineages</a>, remaining intact in only a single bacterial species.</p>

<p>According to the experts, it is vital to take into consideration biological sex in diagnosing and managing sleep disorders, circadian disruptions, and metabolic diseases.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recognizing-sex-differences-in-sleep">Recognizing sex differences in sleep</h2>



<p>“Lower sleep quality is associated with anxiety and depressive disorders, which are twice as common in women as in men,” said study senior author Sarah L. <p>“Women are also more likely than men to be diagnosed with insomnia, although the reasons are not entirely clear. <p>The study reveals that women consistently report poorer sleep quality compared to men, with their sleep patterns notably fluctuating in tandem with the menstrual cycle.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The prevalence of insomnia is higher among women, and the study further identifies a higher propensity in women for conditions like restless legs syndrome and sleep-related eating disorder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists also discovered that differences between the sexes are also present in our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-circadian-disturbances-trigger-mental-health-disorders/">circadian rhythms</a>. For instance, melatonin, a hormone that helps with the timing of circadian rhythms and sleep, was found to be secreted earlier in women than men.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Moreover, core body temperature, which is at its highest before sleep and its lowest a few hours before waking, appears to follow a similar pattern, reaching its peak earlier in women than in men. Finally, previous studies have found that women’s circadian periods are shorter than men’s by around six minutes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disruptions-in-circadian-rhythms-nbsp">Disruptions in circadian rhythms&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“While this difference may be small, it is significant. The misalignment between the central body clock and the sleep/wake cycle is approximately five times larger in women than in men,” said study lead author Renske Lok, a postdoctoral fellow at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a>.</p>



<p>“Imagine if someone's watch was consistently running six minutes faster or slower. Over the course of days, weeks, and months, this difference can lead to a noticeable misalignment between the internal clock and external cues, such as light and darkness.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Disruptions in circadian rhythms have been linked to various health problems, including sleep disorders, mood disorders, and impaired cognitive function. Even minor differences in circadian periods can have significant implications for overall health and well-being.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sex-differences-in-sleep-routines">Sex differences in sleep routines</h2>



<p>Men often have a preference for later sleep schedules, choosing to sleep and wake up later compared to women. This preference can result in social jet lag, a condition where their natural sleep patterns clash with societal obligations, such as work schedules. Additionally, on a daily basis, men's sleep and activity routines tend to vary more than those of women.</p>



<p>The study also ventures into the metabolic ramifications of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-deprivation-increases-the-risk-of-stroke-by-70-percent/">sleep deprivation</a>, particularly in the context of the obesity epidemic. Intriguingly, while sleep loss triggers increased brain activity in response to food in both sexes, men are more prone to overeating as a result.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research delves into the gender-specific risks associated with shift work, noting that while both female and male night shift workers face elevated risks for type 2 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sleep-deprivation-linked-type-2-diabetes-risk/">diabetes</a>, men experience a higher susceptibility.</p>

<p>In addition, the researchers identified emerging evidence on the gender-specific responses to treatments for sleep and circadian disorders.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, weight loss was more successful in treating women with obstructive sleep apnea than men, while women prescribed an insomnia medication such as zolpidem may require a lower dosage than men to avoid lingering drowsiness the next morning.</p>



<p>“Most of sleep and circadian interventions are a newly emerging field with limited research on sex differences. As we understand more about how women and men sleep, differences in their circadian rhythms and how these affect their metabolism, we can move towards more precise and personalized healthcare which enhances the likelihood of positive outcomes,” Chellappa concluded.</p>

<p>Researchers have found that kids who grow up with nature nearby tend to have fewer emotional problems in their preschool years. This fascinating discovery has us asking: could a daily dose of outdoor adventure be a key to better mental health in the critical years of early development?</p>

Green spaces near homes reduce emotional problems in children

<p>A new study from <a href="https://www.iwate-u.ac.jp/english/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Iwate University</a> in Japan has examined why sprayed cat urine emits a particularly potent smell compared to urine found in litter boxes. </p>



<p>The phenomenon of spraying, where cats mark their territory by depositing urine on vertical surfaces, presents a significant challenge for cat owners due to the odor's intensity. </p>



<p>While previous studies have argued that sprayed urine might contain extra compounds from the anal sac secretions or other sources, definitive scientific proof for this hypothesis has been lacking.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compounds-in-sprayed-urine-nbsp">Compounds in sprayed urine&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research team undertook a meticulous comparison of the chemical makeup of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volatile-organic-compound-sources/">volatile organic compounds</a> in sprayed urine, standard urine, and urine extracted directly from the bladder using ureteral catheters. </p>



<p>The analyses revealed an unexpected level of chemical similarity across these different types of urine within individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cat-purring-remains-a-mystery-that-we-dont-fully-understand/">cats</a>. </p>



<p>Behavioral studies complemented these findings, showing that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cat-brains-shrank-in-size-as-they-became-domesticated/">cats</a> could not differentiate between the smell of sprayed urine and the scent of urine left in the bladder after spraying. </p>



<p>This indicates that the sprayed urine originates from bladder urine without supplementation with chemicals from other secretory glands.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigating-the-underlying-mechanisms">Investigating the underlying mechanisms</h2>



<p>This discovery prompted the researchers to shift their focus and investigate alternative reasons behind the distinct pungency of sprayed urine.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A step forward in understanding this phenomenon was the discovery that cat urine samples easily adhered to the inner surface of plastic syringes when they moved the samples into glass vials for urinary volatile analyses.</p>



<p>"This observation prompted us to explore the underlying mechanisms," said study lead author Reiko Uenoyama, an expert in animal behavior and biochemistry at Iwate University.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-theory-about-the-smell-of-sprayed-urine">New theory about the smell of sprayed urine</h2>



<p>Previously, Miyazaki discovered a urine protein called cauxin, which was a significant breakthrough in understanding how certain sulfur-containing odorants responsible for the unique "catty" smell are produced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Generally, the wettability of a liquid on a solid surface increases as the surface tension decreases. Based on this knowledge, we hypothesized that the high protein concentration in cat urine might reduce the surface tension of cat urine, enhancing the emission of urinary volatile compounds from the large vertical surface area that was spread over the urine,” Uenoyama said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adherence-to-vertical-surfaces">Adherence to vertical surfaces</h2>



<p>The researchers' hypothesis was confirmed as they found that the presence of cauxin indeed lowered the surface tension of urine, which in turn increased its wettability and adherence to vertical surfaces. The experts drew a comparison between cat urine containing proteins and a control solution containing albumin, highlighting the unique properties of cauxin in influencing the urine’s properties.&nbsp;</p>



<p>During their examination, the researchers noted that the unique <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-nose-is-a-clever-smell-prediction-system/">smell</a> associated with cat urine was identifiable in an artificial small-scale garden, designed to resemble natural settings, where a block sprayed with male cat urine has been placed. </p>



<p>On the other hand, this distinct odor could not be discerned in another garden setup where the same urine had been directly applied to sandy soil and subsequently concealed.</p>



<p>“The difference in environmental odors between the two gardens, despite using the same urine sample, can be explained by most of the urinary volatile chemicals being trapped in the porous structure of the sandy soil. This phenomenon did not occur in the urine adhering to the surface of the block," explained Miyazaki.</p>



<p>Additionally, liquid droplets of sprayed urine can easily dry on the surface of the block, resulting in greater emissions of volatile chemicals from the scent mark rapidly as compared to from normal urine."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-urinary-protein-cauxin-is-key">The urinary protein cauxin is key</h2>



<p>Thus, the unique composition of cat spray comes directly from the bladder and does not include substances from other bodily secretions. Nonetheless, this spray is characterized by a notably strong <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cat-noses-and-nasal-structure-function-better-than-high-tech-chemical-analysis-equipment/">odor</a> due to its ability to adhere better to vertical surfaces.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The presence of the urinary protein cauxin is key in this process, as it not only generates odorants specific to cats but also amplifies the release of volatile compounds from the urine by lowering its surface tension, thus making it spread more easily. These insights could offer new approaches to mitigating the pronounced scent linked with cat spraying.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."</p>



<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east.
