<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>

This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>

The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>

<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>Earth is on the verge of experiencing its hottest year yet. Our planet is currently experiencing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mountains-impact-el-nino-winters-and-snowfall-amounts/">El Niño</a> event of 2023-24, which is causing a rise in global temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Scientists from the <a href="https://www.camscma.cn/En" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences</a> predict a staggering 90% chance of record-breaking heat during this event.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-el-nino-events-and-global-weather-patterns-nbsp">El Niño events and global weather patterns&nbsp;</h2>



<p>El Niño is a recurring climate event where the central and eastern parts of the tropical Pacific Ocean experience warmer than usual surface temperatures. This is part of a larger cycle called El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which also has a cool phase called La Niña. El Niño occurs every few years, but the exact timing, strength, and duration can vary.</p>



<p>This phenomenon significantly impacts global weather patterns. Some regions, like the west coast of South America, might experience more rainfall than usual, which can lead to devastating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-rivers-always-recover-from-floods/">floods</a>. Other areas, like parts of Australia and Indonesia, might face droughts instead.&nbsp;</p>



<p>El Niño's influence goes beyond regional climates. It also affects global temperatures, making it an important factor in discussions about global warming and climate change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-record-breaking-temperatures-are-possible-nbsp">Record-breaking temperatures are possible&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Scientists examined past El Niño events and how they impacted global temperatures. They then used this information and advanced computer modeling to predict how the ongoing El Niño event (from July 2023 to June 2024) might affect global and regional temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The findings suggest that this El Niño event could lead to record-high average global temperatures. It is expected to be moderate or strong in intensity and significantly influence global weather patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regions-with-the-greatest-risk-of-impacts">Regions with the greatest risk of impacts</h2>



<p>The experts predict that several areas are likely to face extremely high surface air temperatures (SATs) that could be unlike anything seen before. These regions include the seas near Southeast Asia and South Africa, as well as Alaska, northern South America, and the tropical Atlantic Ocean.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Notably, the model accurately captured the main patterns of surface air temperature changes globally, suggesting it effectively predicts how SATs will vary around the world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increase-in-wildfires">Increase in wildfires</h2>



<p>When temperatures rise due to events like El Niño, the consequences go far beyond simply feeling warm. These temperature increases can create a chain reaction of environmental and societal problems.</p>



<p>One major issue is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-threaten-environmental-gains-in-the-amazon/">wildfires</a>. Hotter temperatures dry out plants and make them more likely to catch fire and burn intensely. These fires not only destroy forests and wildlife habitats, but they also release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the air, which further contributes to climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Places like Alaska and the Amazon are especially vulnerable to this, as studies have shown. Wildfires can also directly threaten people and property, and the smoke they produce can harm the health of millions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-on-marine-life">Impact on marine life</h2>



<p>Unusually hot periods in the ocean, called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-protected-areas-are-not-immune-to-ocean-heatwaves/">marine heatwaves</a>, can also have devastating effects on sea life. These heat waves often cause mass die-offs, force animals to move to cooler areas, and lead to declines in fish populations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Global warming and El Niño can make these heat waves worse, leading to longer and more intense periods of stress on marine ecosystems.</p>



<p>Coral reefs are another victim of rising temperatures. Even a small increase in water temperature can cause coral bleaching, where coral expels the algae that lives inside it and turns white. This weakens the coral and makes it harder for it to grow and reproduce. It also disrupts the entire ecosystem that depends on the reef for food and shelter. El Niño events, which cause prolonged periods of warmer water, are often linked to coral bleaching.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitigation-measures">Mitigation measures</h2>



<p>Since extreme weather events are predicted to increase, communities need to become better prepared. This involves improving early warning systems, having evacuation plans in place, and building stronger infrastructure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Communities, especially those at higher risk, need education and resources to respond effectively to these disasters and minimize damage and loss of life.</p>



<p>Furthermore, to truly address climate change, we need to tackle its root causes. Policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions can slow down global warming. This involves switching to renewable energy sources, using energy more efficiently, and adopting sustainable land management practices.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Policies can also encourage individuals, businesses, and governments to reduce their carbon footprint through measures like carbon pricing, subsidies for clean energy technologies, and regulations that limit emissions from industries.</p>

<p>A new study from the <a href="https://noc.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Oceanography Centre</a> (NOC) is redefining our understanding of weather patterns. As a result, experts may now be able to predict summer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-corals-survive-warming-waters-by-remembering-heat-waves/">heat waves</a> in Europe from months to years in advance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The scientists have discovered a direct link between the influx of meltwater in the North Atlantic and the occurrence of heat waves across Europe during the summer months.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-freshwater-in-the-north-atlantic-and-summer-heat">Freshwater in the North Atlantic and summer heat</h2>



<p>The research underscores a significant breakthrough in climatology, tracing how increased levels of freshwater in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/six-north-atlantic-right-whales-dead/">North Atlantic</a> can instigate a domino effect, culminating in hotter and drier summers across Europe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“While the UK and northern Europe experienced unusually cool and wet weather in summer 2023, Greenland experienced an unusually warm summer, leading to increased freshwater input into the North Atlantic," said study lead author and NOC research scientist Marilena Oltmanns. "Based on the identified chain of events, we expect that the ocean-atmosphere conditions will be favorable for an unusually warm and dry summer over southern Europe this year.”</p>



<p>“Depending on the pathway of the freshwater in the North Atlantic, we are also expecting a warm and dry summer in northern Europe within the next 5 years. We will be able to estimate the exact year of the warm and dry summer in northern Europe more closely in the winter before it occurs.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melting-ice-will-intensify-heat-waves">Melting ice will intensify heat waves</h2>



<p>As burgeoning sources of freshwater, melting sea ice and glacial ice are altering the traditional patterns of ocean circulation. This phenomenon has a profound influence on global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jurassic-rocks-reveal-new-details-about-earths-climate-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate dynamics</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research suggests that as ice melt continues to intensify, so too will the frequency and severity of heat waves and droughts across Europe. This phenomenon will further exacerbate the challenges posed by global warming.</p>



<p>"The melting of land and sea ice are expected to increase over the coming decades, resulting in an enhanced freshwater discharge into the North Atlantic. With stronger freshwater anomalies, our results indicate an increase in the risk of warm, dry European summers and of heat waves and droughts accordingly," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In light of these discoveries, Oltmanns emphasizes the paramount importance of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-atlantic-ocean-may-soon-enter-its-declining-phase/">ocean</a> observations in refining climate models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Our findings demonstrate the importance of ocean observations, to ensure climate models capture all physical processes required to make accurate weather predictions," said Oltmanns.</p>



<p>"This study is a step forward for improving models, which will enable industries and stakeholders to plan ahead for specific weather conditions, such as adapting agricultural methods to be more resilient, predicting fuel usage, and bracing for flooding events.”</p>

<p>Additionally, heat waves exacerbate water scarcity issues, affecting both human consumption and natural habitats.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Governments and communities have been working to adapt to these changes through various measures, including the development of heat action plans, increased green spaces in urban areas to combat the heat island effect, and initiatives to improve water conservation and management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-melting-sea-ice">Melting sea ice</h2>



<p>Melting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-ice-loss-increases-snowfall-over-west-antarctica/">sea ice</a> and glaciers have significant impacts on the Earth's climate, ecosystems, and human populations. Glaciers, large masses of ice formed on land, and sea ice, which forms and melts in the ocean, are both experiencing rapid changes due to global warming.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-various-consequences-nbsp">Various consequences&nbsp;</h3>



<p>While the melting of sea ice does not directly contribute to sea level rise - much like ice cubes melting in a glass of water don't overflow the glass - the disappearance of sea ice leads to a range of other devastating consequences. These include changes in weather patterns worldwide and the loss of habitat for species that depend on ice, such as polar bears and walruses​​.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-sea-ice">Arctic sea ice</h3>



<p>The loss of Arctic ice, in particular, affects everyone on the planet. The Arctic acts as the Earth's refrigerator, reflecting heat back into space and helping to keep global temperatures in check.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, we're losing Arctic sea ice at a rate of almost 13% per decade, significantly impacting global weather patterns, coastal communities, food production, shipping routes, wildlife, and the release of methane from thawing permafrost. This release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, contributes further to global warming, creating a feedback loop that exacerbates climate change​​.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-level-rise">Sea level rise</h3>



<p>Global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cause-widespread-impacts-sooner-than-expected/">sea level rise</a> is a direct consequence of the warming planet. As land ice melts and adds water to the ocean, and as ocean water warms and expands, sea levels rise. This has been happening at an accelerating rate, with global sea levels rising about eight inches since the beginning of the 20th century, and more than two inches in the last two decades alone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets poses the most significant threat to sea level rise, with potential increases of up to 10 feet within a century if rapid ice loss continues​​.</p>



<p>These changes underline the urgency of addressing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate further impacts on the planet's ecosystems and human populations.</p>

<p>The emergence of the H5N1 avian influenza virus in marine environments, a pathogen capable of crossing species barriers, has raised <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/avian-influenza-has-evolved-into-a-persistent-global-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">significant concerns</a> within the wildlife conservation community. </p>



<p>A recent collaborative study by the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>, and the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (<a href="https://www.argentina.gob.ar/inta" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">INTA</a>) in Argentina has shed light on the virus's adaptation and its implications for both marine and bird populations along the Atlantic coast of South America. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-h5n1-avian-influenza-strikes-marine-life">H5N1 avian influenza strikes marine life</h2>



<p>Researchers focused their investigation on a collection of brain samples from deceased sea lions, a fur seal, and a tern found in Argentina's most affected sea lion rookery. </p>



<p>The analysis confirmed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/avian-flu-threatens-bald-eagle-recovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">H5N1 infection</a> in all specimens, revealing a near-identical virus sequence across the samples. </p>



<p>This uniformity included specific mutations known for mammalian adaptation, previously identified in marine mammals and a human case across Peru and Chile, and, notably, in a tern for the first time.</p>



<p>Agustina Rimondi, a virologist from INTA and the study's first author, emphasized, "This confirms that while the virus may have adapted to marine mammals, it still has the ability to infect birds. It is a multi-species outbreak." </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dire-implications-of-h5n1-s-marine-mammal-mutation">Dire implications of H5N1's marine mammal mutation</h2>



<p>The presence of mammal-adaptation mutations in the tern's virus sequence highlights the potential for transmission between marine mammals.</p>



<p>Despite these findings, Marcela Uhart, a senior author and wildlife veterinarian at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, reassures that the virus currently poses a relatively low risk to humans. </p>



<p>However, she warns of the potential for increased concern if the virus continues to replicate in mammals. Uhart underscores the importance of ongoing surveillance and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/detecting-avian-influenza-could-save-millions-of-birds-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early warning efforts</a> to mitigate this risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-the-path-of-h5n1">Tracing the path of H5N1</h2>



<p>Labelled as "this new monster" by Uhart, the clade 2.3.4.4b variant of H5N1 emerged in 2020 amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, initially impacting sea birds in Europe before spreading to South Africa, and then to the Americas, threatening poultry and wild bird populations. </p>



<p>By February 2023, the virus had reached Argentina, demonstrating its lethal potential by August 2023 among sea lions at Tierra del Fuego's Atlantic coastline, and then moving northward with devastating effects on marine mammals and seabirds alike.</p>



<p>A staggering toll has been observed, with at least 600,000 wild birds and 50,000 mammals, including elephant seals and sea lions across Argentina, Chile, and Peru, as well as thousands of albatrosses in the Malvinas/Falkland Islands, succumbing to the virus. </p>



<p>A significant outbreak documented by Uhart and her team resulted in a 70% mortality rate among newborn elephant seal pups during the 2023 breeding season in Argentina's Península Valdés.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-avian-influenza-marching-towards-antarctic-marine-life">Avian influenza marching towards Antarctic marine life</h2>

<p>The study embodies the One Health concept, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, domestic animal, wildlife, and environmental health. It calls for a unified response from public, wildlife, agricultural, and health sectors worldwide to address the challenges posed by interspecies disease outbreaks.</p>



<p>In concluding remarks, Uhart reflects on the necessity of giving a voice to affected wildlife populations, highlighting the importance of long-term observational data and global collaboration in preparing for future challenges. </p>



<p>"We are trying to be at the forefront of documenting, recording, and providing early warning," she states, emphasizing the critical role of scientific and conservation efforts in addressing the sprawling impact of the H5N1 virus.</p>

<p>This effect is pronounced higher up the food chain, suggesting that climate change could make ecosystems more susceptible to disruption.</p>

Fish foraging behavior is changing as they adapt to warming waters

<p>Imagine planting a garden on the moon - what would the soil feel like? Scientists from <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a> are now using virtual reality to dig into this question. They created a digital twin of moon dirt, known as lunar regolith, to understand how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lunar-soil-could-be-the-basis-of-moon-life-support-system/">lunar soil</a> behaves.</p>



<p>The team created a computer model that acts like a detailed, virtual version of moon dust. This model is based on information from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/man-in-the-moon-craters-are-200-million-years-older-than-previously-believed/">Apollo missions</a>, including how moon dust sticks together and resists movement in the moon's vacuum and low gravity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simulating-moon-dust">Simulating moon dust</h2>



<p>Traditionally, simulating moon dust was difficult because computers needed to calculate interactions between every single particle, making it too slow for large areas. The new model uses a clever method to solve this problem. It divides the simulated space into tiny cubes, and only checks for collisions between particles in nearby cubes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This significantly reduces the number of calculations needed, allowing the model to simulate much larger areas of moon dust more efficiently.</p>



<p>"Think of it like a realistic video game set on the Moon - we want to make sure the virtual version of moon dust behaves just like the actual thing, so that if we are using it to control a robot on the Moon, then it will behave as we expect,” noted study lead author Joe Louca from Bristol's School of Engineering Mathematics and Technology.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-stability-of-moon-dust">Testing the stability of moon dust</h2>



<p>The scientists carefully compared lunar regolith with specially made materials on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbial-life-soil-planet-warming-global-carbon-cycle/">Earth</a> that are designed to act like real moon dust. One way they do this is by watching how both the computer model and the fake moon dust flow through funnels of different sizes. This shows them how easily the dust can move around, which is important for planning how to use it during missions to the moon.&nbsp;</p>



<p>During the test, they also measure how much of a pile the dust makes when they pour it out on a flat surface. This helps them understand how stable the dust is, which is important for building structures on the moon.</p>



<p>Importantly, the "flow" and “piling” of fake moon dust through funnels in the computer model is not a physical process but a simulation. The computer calculates how particles, represented within the model, would move based on their properties and the conditions set in the simulation (like gravity, cohesion, and friction).&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-the-flow-of-small-and-large-particles">Measuring the flow of small and large particles</h2>



<p>The experts found that the model worked well for large dust particles, but not so well for small ones.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For large tests using funnels, the model worked well for some sizes of fake moon dust particles. Smaller particles got stuck in the funnel, and the model overestimated or underestimated how quickly other sizes flowed compared to real-world tests. Particles between 4 and 5 millimeters in size worked best, matching real-world results except when the funnel was almost blocked.</p>



<p>For smaller tests using funnels, the model had trouble capturing how quickly sand and a specific type of fake moon dust (LMS-1) flowed through funnels of different sizes. Real-world tests showed that both materials flowed faster through wider funnels. The model, however, predicted that LMS-1 would flow slower through wider funnels, likely because it did not fully account for the forces that make the particles stick together.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Larger particles in the model flowed faster than in real-world tests, suggesting the model needs improvement in how it represents these forces.</p>



<p>The model also struggled to predict the angle at which the materials would form a stable pile, again due to simplifications in how it represents the forces between particles.</p>



<p>Overall, the model is a promising tool for studying lunar soil on a large scale, but it needs further development to be more precise, especially in how it represents the forces between particles.</p>

<p>Their research, titled “The current state of artificial intelligence generative language models is more creative than humans on divergent thinking tasks,” utilized three specific tests to measure creativity:</p>

<p>This discovery came during a research cruise aimed at studying marine mammals and seabirds in the Humboldt Wind Energy Area, approximately 30 miles off Northern California's coast. </p>

<p>“I have spent a lot of time at sea in all oceans of the world, and I’ve seen a lot of amazing things,” said Lisa Ballance, director of OSU’s <a href="https://mmi.oregonstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marine Mammal Institute</a>. “A hoary bat was a first for all of us. It’s a reminder of the wonder of nature, and of its vulnerability.”</p>

<p>The sighting raises concerns about the hoary bat's future, especially considering a 2019 study led by OSU-Cascades indicating a decline in its population in the Pacific Northwest. </p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
