Gel manicures have turned into a tiny luxury that fits between lunch breaks and school runs. The ultraviolet or near‑ultraviolet lamps that harden glossy manicure coatings do the job in about four minutes, so the routine feels harmless.



The dryers bathe fingertips in swift pulses of light, but until recently few people asked what those pulses do to the skin that holds the nails. A new laboratory study brings unsettling answers.



The new work was led by photochemist <a href="https://bicyt.conicet.gov.ar/fichas/p/en/maria-laura-dantola" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. María Laura Dántola</a> at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Physical‑Chemical Research <a href="https://www.inifta.unlp.edu.ar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(INIFTA</a>), part of Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council <a href="https://www.conicet.gov.ar/?lan=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">(CONICET</a>).



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-manicure-lamps">Studying manicure lamps</h2>



Serrano’s team placed common skin molecules, including tyrosinase, inside a chamber that mimicked a salon lamp and zapped them for the same four‑minute cycle used in most gel services. 



All targets, from amino acids to lipids, emerged chemically altered and less able to perform their jobs.



“These devices are used without any controls or regulations requiring manufacturers to report on the potential risks of frequent exposure,” cautioned Dántola and colleagues. 



One of the starkest changes hit tyrosinase, the enzyme that drives production of melanin, a pigment that shields DNA from solar radiation.



The researchers also measured how fast the altered molecules sparked <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/oxidative-stress" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxidative stress</a> reactions that can shred cell membranes. Reaction rates jumped within seconds, confirming that harm starts long before a hand is removed from the booth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-photosensitization-matters">Why photosensitization matters</h2>



Photosensitization happens when a molecule absorbs light then transfers that energy to oxygen, creating reactive species. Those species slice through DNA, proteins, and lipids with no regard for cell repair cycles.



Because tyrosinase sits at the start of melanin synthesis, even small interruptions amplify downstream damage. Losing melanin’s natural sunscreen effect makes every future dose of sunlight or lamp light more hazardous.



Many over‑the‑counter skincare ingredients, including retinoids and some antibiotics, can enhance photosensitization. 



People who use them may face higher risks because their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vitamin-c-promotes-skin-renewal-and-anti-aging-at-the-genetic-level-dna-demethylation/">skin</a> already carries extra light‑reactive compounds.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tyrosinase-melanin-and-lost-defense">Tyrosinase, melanin and lost defense</h2>



Tyrosinase flips the chemical switches that turn the amino acid tyrosine into melanin granules. When the lamp’s photons broke those switches, the team saw melanin output stall.



Without melanin the skin compensates poorly for incoming ultraviolet, so photo‑aging and cancer risk rise. The altered enzyme also disrupts color balance, explaining reports of blotchy pigmentation after frequent gel sessions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-manicure-lamps-are-very-bright">Manicure lamps are very bright</h2>



Bench measurements showed the lamp delivered a dose of <a href="https://www.mdanderson.org/publications/focused-on-health/what-s-the-difference-between-uva-and-uvb-rays-.h15-1592991.html">UVA radiation</a> around 368–400 nanometers, the same band blamed for tanning and wrinkles. 



A separate American <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-35876-8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> in 2023 reported that a 20‑minute session killed up to 70 percent of cultured human skin cells and stamped permanent mutations on the survivors.



Sensor data from the Argentine team indicate the lamp’s irradiance peaks at 7 milliwatts per square centimeter, nearly matching the noon sun in Buenos Aires during spring. 



Weekly visits translate into roughly three and a half hours under that intensity each year, more than many people spend sunbathing.



A systematic <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38557455/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> in 2024 concluded that while the absolute cancer risk appears low, the evidence remains weak and long‑term users should be told the data gaps.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-short-bursts-long-shadows">Short bursts, long shadows</h2>



Gel clients often repeat the service every two to three weeks, layering dose upon dose across years. Cumulative exposure matters because photochemical injuries add rather than heal, especially when they trigger oxidative stress and DNA breaks.



A 2023 <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-49814-7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">test</a> on human keratinocytes showed sunscreen with SPF 50 cut cell death by more than one‑third during the same four‑minute irradiation used in salons. 



Protective gloves that leave only the nail plate visible can block over 90 percent of the rays, yet they remain optional accessories.



“These are processes that, in one way or another, result in cell death,” added Dántola and colleagues after monitoring the altered enzyme profiles. 



The comment echoes warnings from dermatology societies that link chronic UVA to premature aging and certain skin cancers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-keeping-nails-and-skin-safe">Keeping nails and skin safe</h2>



Dermatologists at the <a href="https://www.aad.org/media/news-releases/gel-manicures-dermatologists-share-tips-to-keep-nails-healthy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Academy of Dermatology</a> urge customers to apply a broad‑spectrum SPF 30 or higher on their hands before every gel manicure and to choose LED lamps that cure polish faster and with lower UV output.



Salons can switch to newer hybrid lacquers that air‑dry or set under visible blue light, trimming exposure further. At home, limiting sessions and spacing them at least a month apart reduces cumulative dose.



For clients unwilling to give up the chip‑free finish, simple habits help: wear fingertip‑less UPF gloves, time the lamp cycles carefully, and keep moisturizer handy because dry <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/teen-skin-bacteria-could-hold-the-secret-to-acne-prevention/">skin</a> amplifies light penetration.



Regulators have yet to issue binding standards for consumer nail lamps, so the burden falls on users and technicians. 



Serrano’s group believes clear warning labels and pre‑packed barrier gloves would let people enjoy the beauty trend while understanding the trade‑offs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-manicure-lamps-speed-vs-safety">Manicure lamps: Speed vs. safety</h2>



The beauty business around gel nails is sizable. Analysts <a href="https://www.polarismarketresearch.com/industry-analysis/uv-nail-gel-market" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">estimate</a> the global UV gel polish segment alone was worth almost six billion dollars in 2024 and could double within a decade.



Social media trends and influencer tutorials push fans to redo manicures every week rather than once a month, increasing exposure well beyond the study’s four‑minute baseline. Convenience encourages at‑home kits, yet those kits often ship without detailed safety instructions.



Dántola stresses that the project sits in basic science, aimed at mapping chemical events rather than legislating behavior. 



Still, sharing data allows dermatologists, engineers, and regulators to design larger trials that measure real <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-carry-toxic-chemicals-that-are-easily-absorbed-by-skin/">skin</a> after repeated consumer‑level doses.



Applied research may soon test glove fabrics, lamp filters, or polish formulas that polymerize under visible light. Until such options become standard, informed choice remains the safest tool on the manicure table.

In a new study led by the <a href="https://www.isglobal.org/en">Barcelona Institute for Global Health</a> (ISGlobal), researchers have found that environmental exposures during pregnancy and childhood could have an effect on <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/young-adults-high-blood-pressure/">blood pressure</a> in young people. 

"Our results show that, starting in the foetal stage, where we live, the food we eat, the air we breathe and the chemical compounds that reach our bodies can affect blood pressure before adolescence," said study lead author Charline Warembourg. "This is important because evidence shows that children with high blood pressure are more likely to be hypertensive as adults."

The investigation is part of a larger study known as the HELIX project, which collects information from cohorts in Spain, France, Greece, Lithuania, Norway, and the United Kingdom. 

The team focused on data from a total of 1,277 children and mothers using a new exposome-based approach, which can analyze all of a child's environmental exposures rather than studying each one separately. A total of 89 prenatal exposures were assessed, as well as 128 postnatal exposures from when the children were between 6 and 11 years old. 

The researchers identified a link between various exposures during pregnancy and higher blood pressure in children, including tobacco smoke, bisphenol-A, and low or high fish intake. Among childhood exposures,  higher concentrations of copper and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) - a compound used in non-stick pots and clothing - were found to lead to higher blood pressure.

"Some of the associations found in children in this study, such as tobacco smoke and bisphenol-A, had already been observed in adults in previous studies," explained Warembourg. "Other associations, such as fish intake during pregnancy, are more difficult to interpret. Fish contain essential fatty acids that are necessary and beneficial, but we also know that it is a source of chemical compounds, which perhaps helps to explain why moderate fish intake is associated with better blood-pressure results."

The study also identified exposures associated with lower blood pressure, such as higher outdoor temperatures during childhood and facility density in the neighborhood where the mother lived during pregnancy. 

"Urban-design factors such as the number of shops, restaurants, parks and public-transport hubs determine how people use the city and get around, and they are important for health because they promote physical activity and social contact," explained study co-author Xavier Basagaña.

The study is published in the <a href="http://www.onlinejacc.org/">Journal of the American College of Cardiology</a>.

Through a new study published by the <a href="https://www.sfn.org/">Society for Neuroscience</a>, experts have discovered that chronic <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/cocaine-pharmaceutical-drugs-river-wildlife/">cocaine</a> use causes changes in gene expression across the brain's hippocampus. 

The hippocampus is a curved formation in the brain that plays an important role in the limbic system, a small set of structures that control emotions and memory. In response to emotional stimuli, the limbic system regulates endocrine function, reinforces behavior, and creates memories.

According to the study, chronic drug users begin to associate the drug-taking environment with the drug itself, which strengthens memories that contribute to addiction. These new memories appear to be shaped by changes in gene expression across the hippocampus region involving the gene FosB, but the mechanism which underlies this transformation is unclear.

Led by A.J. Robinson, a team at <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a> examined how frequent cocaine exposure affected expression of the FosB gene in the hippocampus using a mouse model. 

The study revealed that when mice were exposed to cocaine on a daily basis, they showed increased expression of FosB compared to mice that received saline as a control.

Chronic cocaine use was found to cause epigenetic changes that made the gene become more active. In addition, when scientists blocked the alterations made to FosB, the mice were unable to form associations between cocaine and the environment where they received it. This revelation further confirms the potential for epigenetic regulation of the gene in drug memory formation.

The research sheds new light on the molecular changes that are taking place in the hippocampus during chronic cocaine use, and further evaluation may ultimately lead to the development of addiction therapies.

The research was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Mental Health.

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.jneurosci.org/">Journal of Neuroscience</a>.

Eating nuts twice a week can lower your risk of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-attack-risk-hotter-temperatures/">fatal heart attack</a> or stroke, new research shows.

Nuts contain many beneficial vitamins and nutrients, including fiber, vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats, and eating nuts can help keep your heart healthy. 

A new study presented at the <a href="https://www.escardio.org/Congresses-&amp;-Events/ESC-Congress">ESC Congress 2019 </a>shows that nuts can lower the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 17 percent.  

The study was conducted by researchers from<a href="http://www.english.mui.ac.ir/content/isfahan-cardiovascular-research-institute"> Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Institute</a> in Iran. 

“Nuts are a good source of unsaturated fat and contain little saturated fat,” said Dr. Noushin Mohammadifard, an author of the study. “They also have protein, minerals, vitamins, fibre, phytosterols, and polyphenols which benefit heart health. European and US studies have related nuts with cardiovascular protection but there is limited evidence from the Eastern Mediterranean Region.”

The researchers randomly selected 5,342 adults aged 35 years or older from both urban and rural areas across three counties in Iran.  

None of the participants had a history of cardiovascular disease, and the researchers recorded how many nuts such as almonds and walnuts the participants consumed in 2001 and followed up every two years until 2013.  

During the 12-year follow up, there 751 reported cardiovascular events among the participants, and 179 died due to cardiovascular disease. 

However, the researchers found that participants who consumed nuts at least twice a week had a 17 percent lower risk of fatal heart attack or stroke. 

This correlation was consistent even after the researchers adjusted for influencing factors like age, lifestyle habits, and sex. 

“Raw fresh nuts are the healthiest,” said Dr. Mohammadifard. “Nuts should be fresh because unsaturated fats can become oxidised in stale nuts, making them harmful. You can tell if nuts are rancid by their paint-like smell and bitter or sour taste.”

New research from the <a href="https://www.escardio.org/">European Society of Cardiology</a> has revealed that in many young patients, lifestyle factors make the largest contribution to heart problems. <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/health-risks-sedentary-lifestyle/">Physical inactivity</a>, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol were all found to have a stronger influence on premature heart disease than genetics. 

The findings suggest that healthy behaviors should be the biggest priority for reducing the risk of heart disease, even in those with a family history of this condition.

"Genetics are an important contributor to premature heart disease but should not be used as an excuse to say it is inevitable," said study author Dr. Joao A. Sousa of Funchal Hospital in Portugal.

"In our clinical practice, we often hear young patients with premature heart disease 'seek shelter' and explanations in their genetics/family history. However, when we look at the data in our study, these young patients were frequently smokers, physically inactive, with high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure - all of which can be changed."

The study was focused on 555 patients under the age of 50 who had premature coronary artery disease (CAD). The group was 87-percent male with an average age of 45. The researchers compared the risk factors and genetics of these patients to a control group of 520 healthy volunteers with an average age 44, who were also mostly males. 

Of the five modifiable lifestyle factors that were examined in the study, nearly 73 percent of patients had at least three of these risk factors compared to only 31 percent of individuals in the control group. 

The chances of developing CAD drastically increased with each additional risk factor in both groups. The presence of two extra risk factors increased the likelihood of CAD by seven times, while an individual with three extra risk factors was 24 times more likely to develop the condition. 

The average genetic risk score was higher in patients than controls, and was found to be an independent predictor for premature CAD. However, the contribution of genetics declined as the number of modifiable risk  factors increased.

"The findings demonstrate that genetics contribute to CAD," said Dr. Sousa. "However, in patients with two or more modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, genetics play a less decisive role in the development of CAD."

"Our study provides strong evidence that people with a family history of premature heart disease should adopt healthy lifestyles, since their poor behaviors may be a greater contributor to heart disease than their genetics. That means quit smoking, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and get blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked."

The research was presented at <a href="https://www.escardio.org/Congresses-&amp;-Events/ESC-Congress">ESC Congress 2019</a>.

Premature heart disease is more strongly linked to lifestyle than genetics

New research from the European Society of Cardiology has revealed...

Two decades of a sedentary lifestyle is linked to a two times higher risk of premature death, according to a new study. The good news? It’s not too late to get active.

"Our findings imply that to get the maximum health benefits of physical activity in terms of protection against premature all-cause and cardiovascular death, you need to continue being physically active,” study author Dr. Trine Moholdt of the <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu/">Norwegian University of Science and Technology</a> said in a press release. “You can also reduce your risk by taking up physical activity later in life, even if you have not been active before."

The Nord-Trøndelag Health Study – known as the HUNT study – adds to a massive collection of recent studies that have linked living a sedentary lifestyle to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sedentary-behavior-cardiovascular-trouble/">cardiovascular risk</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sitting-increases-risk-dementia/">dementia</a> and a variety of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sedentary-behavior-health-risks/">other health issues</a>.

It also adds to evidence that a sedentary lifestyle is especially dangerous for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dangerous-sedentary-older/">older adults</a> – and that starting a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/physical-activity-reduce-mortality-risk/">physical activity</a> routine can help battle the ill effects.

The HUNT study invited everyone over the age of 20 living in Norway to participate, beginning in 1984 to 1986. Researchers asked participants about how often they were physically active and for how long. More than 23,000 people participated in the research.

The questionnaire was repeated from 1995 to 1997, and from 2006 to 2008. The new report uses data from the first and third points in time, categorizing people as inactive, or with moderate or high activity. 

Then researchers cross-referenced each group with the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry. After adjusting for other health factors such as smoking, drinking, age, education and blood pressure, the scientists found that participants who reported a sedentary lifestyle in both the first and third surveys were twice as likely to die younger.

Those who were inactive in the first survey but became active before the third were at a lower risk of death, though their risk was still higher than those who were active in both surveys. But those who went from active to inactive saw the same risk as those who were inactive all along.

People shouldn’t give up because they can’t exercise the recommended amount each week, Moholdt said. 

"An important point to make here is that physical activity levels even below the advised levels will give health benefits. Physical fitness is more important than the amount of exercise,” she said.

Doctors should advise their patients that any amount of activity, no matter how small, is better than a completely sedentary lifestyle, she said.

And activity doesn’t have to mean formal exercise at the gym. It can be as simple as dancing or doing jumping jacks whenever you have time.

"Do activities you like and get more movement into your everyday life," Moholdt said. "For example, walk to the shops instead of driving, get off the metro a stop early, and use stairs instead of the lift. I recommend everyone to get out of breath at least a couple of times each week."

Massive wildfires are the new normal. 

Whether they’re deliberately set – like the flames burning through the Amazon rainforest – or sparked by accident or natural events like lightning strikes, enormous wildfires have become a part of yearly life. 

In 2018, four wildfires in California burned more than 930,000 acres combined, destroyed more than 20,000 structures and killed 100 people. Most of that destruction was from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/camp-fire-is-the-most-destructive-in-californias-history/">Camp Fire</a> that ripped through Paradise and surrounding towns so quickly that residents had no chance to flee. California wasn’t alone; fires burned throughout the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-burning-two-million-acres/">western U.S.</a>

In British Columbia, more than 3.3 million acres burned. That beat the 3 million acres that burned in that province in 2017.

In 2017, 44 people were killed and more than 8,000 structures burned in California’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-california-wine-country/">North Bay fires</a>. A blaze in Montana spread to 1.2 million acres before early rain and snow in September contained it. Oregon saw <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Oregon_wildfires">more than 1,000 fires</a> in 2017.

Kansas saw the largest fire in its history in 2016 – the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/grass-fires-char-kansas-and-oklahoma/">Anderson Creek Fire</a>, which also burned in Oklahoma. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/enormous-wildfire-in-fort-mcmurray/">Fort McMurray Fire</a> in Canada was the costliest disaster in the country’s history, with nearly 100,000 people evacuated. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tennessee-wildfires-threaten-dollywood/">Great Smoky Mountains wildfires</a> in Tennessee killed 14 people, the deadliest wildfires in the eastern U.S. since 1947. 

North America isn’t the only region seeing an increase in massive wildfires. Fires are raging out of control in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amazon-fires-devastating-impacts/">Brazilian Amazon</a> and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-indonesia-environment-wildfire/indonesian-police-investigate-palm-oil-companies-over-forest-fires-ministry-idUSKCN1VJ1BS">across Indonesia</a> – in both cases, believed to be deliberately set by growers seeking to clear land for farming – and across <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/nasa-images-show-africa-has-five-times-more-wildfires-burning-amazonheres-why-theyre-1456382">Africa</a> and in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Siberia_wildfires">Siberia</a>, <a href="https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2019/08/30/firefighters-make-progress-as-swan-lake-fire-grows-to-nearly-162000-acres/">Alaska</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Canary_Islands_wildfires">Canary Islands</a>. <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2019/04/responders-quickly-extinguish-one-of-koreas-largest-wildfires/">South Korea</a> saw one of the most massive wildfires in its history in April, and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_United_Kingdom_wildfires">United Kingdom</a> saw a remarkably early series of fires this spring.

Fires killed more than 100 people in Portugal and Spain in 2017 – <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_2017_Portugal_wildfires">66 in June</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_2017_Iberian_wildfires">49 in October</a>. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Attica_wildfires">2018 Attica wildfires</a> killed 102 in Greece.

Some scientists are linking the massive wildfires to climate change – and they’re only going to get worse, they say.

"A new normal makes it sound like we've arrived in a new position and that's where we're going to be," Dr. Michael Mann of <a href="https://www.psu.edu/">Penn State University</a> told <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/are-devastating-wildfires-a-new-normal-its-actually-worse-than-that-climate-scientist-says/">CBS News</a> last year. "But if we continue to burn fossil fuels and put carbon pollution into the atmosphere, we are going to continue to warm the surface of the Earth. We're going to get worse and worse droughts and heat waves and superstorms and floods and wildfires."

Several scientists told <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/08/21/wildfires-july-hottest-month-ever-fires-rage-across-globe/2070418001/">USA Today</a> that they believed rising global temperatures – and the accompanying drought and other extreme weather – are linked to the current raging fires around the world. 

“In these conditions, it is easier for wildfires to grow and to be more long-lived,” Dr. Mark Parrington, a senior scientist at the <a href="https://www.ecmwf.int/">European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts</a>, told USA Today.

The number of wildfires in the Amazon has actually been down in recent years, but the current fires quickly raged out of control, he said.

Worldwide, the number of acres burned each year is actually <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/90493/researchers-detect-a-global-drop-in-fires">on the decline</a>, in part due to the development of previously wild lands removing opportunities for slash and burn agriculture. But fires are popping up at unusual times – like February in the UK – and in unusual places, like the Arctic. And when they do rage out of control, they are breaking records for size and destructiveness. 

“This year has been unprecedented for wildfires in the Arctic,” Dr. Carly Phillips of the <a href="https://whrc.org/">Woods Hole Research Centre</a> told the <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg24332452-800-the-pyrocene-has-begun-how-to-tackle-a-world-of-raging-wildfires/">New Scientist</a>. 

A record amount of carbon dioxide has been released in the Arctic this year, especially in Russia, the <a href="https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/">Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service</a> reports.

And that’s worrisome because the Arctic is essentially a giant, frozen tinderbox. The frozen part has been key in the past. Fires just didn’t take off there. But if the area melts and dries out a bit, it could go up in smoke. 

“The north is a big tinder box, but it’s been limited from burning by the climate,” Dr. Merritt Turetsky of the <a href="https://www.uoguelph.ca/">University of Guelph</a> told the New Scientist. “If you remove those climatic constraints, all those fuels are ready to go.”

The effects that all that smoke, soot and released carbon could have globally isn’t known yet. But scientists are hoping that world governments and their fire agencies will work together to protect not just people and property from massive wildfires, but areas with “old carbon” such as the Arctic. If they don’t, scientists say, the effects on the climate could be devastating.

“What happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. Pollution can carry thousands of miles away,” Elizabeth Hoy at <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> said.

A team of engineers and psychologists at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a> explored what factors affect how human touch perceives softness and designed materials that replicate different levels of this perceived feeling. 

In doing so, the team proved that it’s possible to design tactile materials and haptic interfaces to apply to technologies such as electronic skin, prosthetics, and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/robotic-exosuit-walking-running/">medical robots</a>.

"We provide a formula to recreate a spectrum of softness,” said co-leader Charles Dhong, an assistant professor in biomedical engineering at the <a href="https://www.udel.edu/">University of Delaware</a> and former postdoctoral fellow at UC San Diego. “In doing so, we are helping close the gap in understanding what it takes to recreate some aspects of touch.”

To begin, Dhong and his colleagues first examined indentation depth (how deep a finger can press into a material) as well as the contact area between material and fingertip, as these are the first two parameters to change as a fingertip presses into an object. 

To test how these parameters work independently, the team engineered nine elastomeric slabs, each one of which had its own ratio of indentation depth to contact area, and differed in the amount of surface micropatterning (consisting of bunches of raised microscopic pillars that allow fingertips to press deeper without changing the contact area), thickness, and stiffness (measured by Young’s modulus). They then tested the slabs on human participants.

"By creating these micropatterned surface structures, we produce discontinuous regions of contact where the finger presses in that are much smaller than the shadow it would cast on the surface," said co-corresponding author Darren Lipomi, a professor of nanoengineering at UC San Diego.

The 15 human participants were instructed to identify the softer slab when presented with a pair of slabs. They were then asked to rank the nine slabs from softest to hardest. The slabs that were thicker, had barely any micropatterning, and had the lowest Young’s modulus were perceived as being softer than others.

Dhong, Lipomi, and colleagues were also able to create equations based on the results of their experiments. These equations can calculate how soft or hard a material will feel based on its thickness, Young’s modulus, and micropatterned areas.

"What's interesting about this is that we've found two new ways to tune the perceived softness of an object — micropatterning and changing the thickness," Dhong said. "Young's modulus is what scientists typically turn to in terms of what's soft or hard. It is a factor, but now we show that it's only one part of the equation."

After experimenting, the researchers concluded that the perception of softness is a basic sensation, not a mashup of several sensations.

"This means softness is a primary ingredient of the human sense of touch. It's like how we have RGB for color displays," Lipomi said. "If we can find the other 'pixels of touch,' can we combine them to make any tactile image we want? These are the fundamental things we would like to know going forward."

This study is published in <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Study finds that genes influence sexuality, but there is no ‘gay gene’. There is no single gene that determines sexual orientation, but a new study has found several genetic variations that may influence sexual behaviors. 

The large scale genome-wide association study puts to bed once and for all the idea of a “gay gene,” but shows that same-sex behavior is a part of natural human diversity. 

“In fact, this study provides further evidence that diverse sexual behavior is a natural part of overall human variation,” the <a href="https://geneticsexbehavior.info/what-we-found/">researchers explain</a>. “Our research is intended to improve our understanding of the genetic basis of same-sex sexual behavior. It should not be misconstrued to disparage LGBTQ people.”

The study was conducted by an international group of researchers in collaboration with activists and advocacy groups to help answer the question of why people differ in sexual behaviors.

DNA data from the UK Biobank, the genetic testing company 23andMe, the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, Molecular Genetic Study of Sexual Orientation, and The Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden were reviewed and analyzed for the study. 

By combining several large-scale studies, the researchers focused on what role genetics might play in shaping certain <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/same-sex-marriage-anti-gay-bias/">same-sex behaviors</a>. 

Data from 477,522 individuals were included in the research, and participants provided DNA samples as well as answers to questions on sexual identity, number of same-sex encounters, and sexual attraction. 

The researchers identified five genetic variants associated with same-sex behavior. 

“By incorporating DNA and personal information from nearly half a million people, our study is the first to include enough people to be able to link specific genetic variants and same-sex sexual behavior with demonstrable statistical confidence,” the researchers wrote. 

This is the first time such genetic markers have been identified. However, it’s important to note that the human genome is made up of millions of genetic markers, each with its own small contribution to different behaviors. 

The researchers also made sure to emphasize that the genetic variants are linked only to same-sex behaviors and that the study is not focused on identity or orientation.

While these variants were linked to same-sex behaviors, none of them clearly predicted these behaviors and only accounted for eight to 25 percent of the genetic variation in same-sex behavior for men and women. 

There are several limitations to the study, including that much of the data relied on self-reported information and that there are other non-genetic environmental factors that must be considered.

“It just shows us that same-sex sexual behavior is much more complex than this idea of having just one gene influencing it all,” Eric Vilain, director of the <a href="https://childrensnational.org/research-and-education/center-for-genetic-medicine-research">Center for Genetic Medicine Research at Children’s National Health System</a>, told the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2019/08/29/theres-no-gay-gene-genetics-are-linked-same-sex-behavior-new-study-says/">Washington Post</a>. “It shows that there are genetic factors, which we had suspected long ago … but it also shows those genetic factors do not tell the whole story.”

The study was published in the journal <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/365/6456/eaat7693">Science. </a>

Study finds that genes influence sexuality, but there is no...

A new study led by the <a href="https://www.camh.ca/">Centre for Addiction and Mental Health</a> (CAMH) has revealed an urgent need for improved treatment practices to help people with alcohol use disorder. 

In any given year, an estimated one million Canadians are suffering from alcohol dependence, yet the vast majority of these individuals never receive professional help. 

According to the Mayo Clinic, alcohol use disorder is a chronic disease that is characterized by preoccupation with <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/quitting-alcohol-health-benefits/">alcohol</a> and problems controlling the frequency or the amount of alcohol consumption. Although interventions for the disease can be very effective, they are rare in Canada and elsewhere in the world.

Study senior author Dr. Jürgen Rehm is a senior scientist at the CAMH Institute for Mental Health and Policy Research. He noted that routine screening should start in primary care and should be followed by accessible specialized care when required.

"Clinical interventions for alcohol use disorders need to start at the primary care level, if average consumption exceeds more than two drinks a day," said Dr. Rehm. "General practitioners should regularly be asking their patients about alcohol intake, and initiate interventions if required."

The lack of intervention in primary care is largely due to the stigma that surrounds uncontrollable alcohol use, which often causes patients to withhold information about their consumption level. Furthermore, general practitioners may fail to ask these patients about their alcohol use. 

In the case that an alcohol use disorder is detected, safe and effective medications are available for use in primary health care. 

Study co-author Markus Heilig is an international expert on the pharmacology of addictive disorders and director of the Center for Social and Affective Neuroscience at Linköping University. 

"Approved medications for alcohol use disorders are no less effective than other widely used medical treatments," said Heilig. "They are also safe, well tolerated. And they are cheap. Yet they are only prescribed to a small minority of patients. This needs to change."

The study authors pointed out that, in order to ensure treatment is effective, waiting lists for specialized treatment should be minimal and primary care providers should be involved in patient aftercare.

The study is published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/">The Lancet</a>.

Alcohol use disorder is not sufficiently addressed and treated

For the first time, researchers have identified a protein in the skin that detects cold temperatures. The study was focused on the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. The team discovered that, without the receptor protein, the worms became completely insensitive to <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/colder-temperatures-emotion-driven-purchases/">cold temperatures</a>. 

Study senior author Professor Shawn Xu is an expert at the <a href="https://umich.edu/">University of Michigan</a> Life Sciences Institute. 

"Clearly, nerves in the skin can sense cold. But no one has been able to pinpoint exactly how they sense it," said Professor Xu. "Now, I think we have an answer."

Receptor proteins within the sensory nerves of the skin can detect when temperatures drop and signal information about this environmental change to the brain. The system works the same for humans as it does for the tiny, millimeter-long worm C. elegans.

"When you step outside and you sense it's too cold, you're going to take action to get back to a warmer environment as soon as you can," explained Professor Xu. "When the worms sense cold, they also engage in avoidance behavior - moving away from cold temperatures, just like humans."

Unlike complex organisms, however, C. elegans have a simple, extensively-studied genome and a short lifespan. This makes them the ideal model for investigating sensory responses.

According to Professor Xu, previous searches for a cold receptor have been unsuccessful because researchers were focusing on specific groups of genes that are related to sensation, which is a biased approach. The team in Professor Xu's lab took an unbiased approach by looking across thousands of random genetic variations to determine which affected the worms' responses to cold temperatures.

When temperatures dipped below 18 degrees Celsius, worms that were missing the glutamate receptor gene glr-3 no longer responded. This gene is responsible for making the GLR-3 receptor protein, which the researchers discovered is required for the worms to sense cold.

The study also revealed that the glr-3 gene is evolutionarily conserved across species, including humans. The researchers introduced the mammalian version of the gene to mutant worms lacking glr-3 and found that it rescued their cold sensitivity. 

The team also introduced the worm, zebrafish, mouse, and human versions of the genes to cold-insensitive mammalian cells. Every version of the gene caused the cells to become sensitive to cold temperatures.

"For all these years, attention has been focused on this gene's function in the brain. Now, we've found that it has a role in the peripheral sensory system, as well," said Professor Xu. "It's really exciting. This was one of the few remaining sensory receptors that had not yet been identified in nature."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/">Cell</a>.

According to a new study by researchers at the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk/">Francis Crick Institute</a>, healthy cells that are in the immediate vicinity of a tumor become more stem cell-like and promote the spread of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/sugary-drinks-cancer/">cancer</a>.

In the lab of Ilaria Malanchi, the experts used a state-of-the-art technique which they developed to study the tissue surrounding a tumor, which is called the tumor microenvironment. This region is known to have a strong influence on the growth of cancer, as well as its response to treatment.

"Our new technique allows us to study changes to cells in the tumor microenvironment with unprecedented precision," said Malanchi. "This helps us to understand how these changes relate to tumor growth and metastasis, allowing us to develop better strategies to treat the disease."

"We discovered that non-cancerous cells in the tumor microenvironment regress back into a stem-cell like state, and actually support cancer growth. By corrupting its neighbors, cancer transforms its local environment to support its own survival."

The method used by the team is based on the modification of cancer cells to release a cell-penetrating fluorescent protein that is absorbed by neighboring cells. These color-labeled cells can be identified and compared to other "unlabeled" cells that have not made contact with the tumor. 

In mice, the researchers used this approach to study the cells around breast cancer that had spread to the lungs. It was then confirmed by Alessandro Ori's lab at the Fritz Lipmann Institute that labeled cells had produced different proteins compared to unlabeled cells.

The experts discovered that labeled lung cells developed stem cell-like features that were not observed in lung cells outside of the tumor microenvironment. When the labeled cells were mixed with tumor cells in a 3D culture in the lab, they were found to boost tumor growth, which indicates that they help the cancer survive and spread.

To further investigate the behavior of the cells, the researchers collaborated with Joo-Hyeon Lee at the Wellcome Trust/MRC Stem Cell Institute, who used the cells to grow mini-lungs.

This experiment revealed that healthy lung cells formed mini-lungs that were mostly made up of alveolar epithelial cells, which allow for gas exchange. On the other hand, the labeled cells collected from the tumor microenvironment formed mini-lungs that contained a wider range of cell types.

"To our amazement, we found that cells receiving proteins from adjacent cancer cells obtained stem-cell-like features," explained Lee. "They could change their fate to become different cell types. It demonstrates the powerful influence that cancer exerts over its neighboring cells, making them liable to change easily."

The researchers hope that their new technique will be utilized in future studies to gain further insight into the local changes triggered by cancer which help it to survive, spread, and develop resistance to treatments.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://nature.com">Nature</a>.

Cancer cells have a transformative impact on neighboring cells

A new study at the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/">University of Birmingham</a> (UoB) has revealed that older adults who have never consistently engaged in exercise programs have as much capacity for building muscle mass as a highly-trained master athlete in the same age group. 

The research suggests that resistance exercises such as <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/weight-lifting-heart-health-benefits/">weight training</a> are just as beneficial for beginners.

Researchers in the UoB School of Sport and Exercise Science compared muscle-building ability among two groups of older men. The first group included master athletes, which are people in their 70s and 80s who have a lifelong history of exercise and are still competing at the top levels of their sport. The second group of participants consisted of healthy individuals in the same age range who had never participated in structured exercise programs.

The participants were given isotope tracers before engaging in a single session of exercise that involved weight training on an exercise machine. In addition, samples of muscle tissue were taken from participants before and after the workout. 

The team examined the tissue samples to investigate how the men's muscles were responding to exercise. Meanwhile, the isotope tracer showed how proteins were developing within the muscle.

The researchers anticipated that the master athletes would have an increased ability to build muscle due to their long history of superior fitness. Surprisingly, the results showed that both groups had an equal capacity to build muscle.

"Our study clearly shows that it doesn't matter if you haven't been a regular exerciser throughout your life, you can still derive benefit from exercise whenever you start," noted study lead author Dr. Leigh Breen. "Obviously a long term commitment to good health and exercise is the best approach to achieve whole-body health, but even starting later on in life will help delay age-related frailty and muscle weakness."

"Current public health advice on strength training for older people is often quite vague. What's needed is more specific guidance on how individuals can improve their muscle strength, even outside of a gym-setting through activities undertaken in their homes - activities such as gardening, walking up and down stairs, or lifting up a shopping bag can all help if undertaken as part of a regular exercise regime."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/physiology">Frontiers in Physiology</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

The map has been created over the last decade using observations of water-rich rocks and mineral deposits. The images were captured by ESA’s Mars Express and NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.



"A big surprise is the prevalence of these minerals, with the map revealing hundreds of thousands of water-affected locations in the oldest parts of the planet," says ESA. "The new data will help answer exciting questions about Mars’ climate history, whether water was globally persistent or confined to short, intense episodes, and whether the conditions were ever suitable for life."



"Specifically, the map shows the locations and abundances of aqueous minerals. These are from rocks that have been chemically altered by the action of water in the past, and have typically been transformed into clays and salts."



According to John Carter of the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (IAS), our collective understanding of Mars has been oversimplified. He explained that planetary scientists have tended to think that only a few types of clay minerals on Mars were created during its wet period, then as the water gradually dried up, salts were produced across the planet.



The new map shows that the composition of Mars is much more complicated than what we thought. For example, while many salts formed after Martian clays, there are some salts that are presumed to be older than some of the clays.&nbsp;



“The evolution from lots of water to no water is not as clear cut as we thought, the water didn’t just stop overnight. We see a huge diversity of geological contexts, so that no one process or simple timeline can explain the evolution of the mineralogy of Mars. That’s the first result of our study. The second is that if you exclude life processes on Earth, Mars exhibits a diversity of mineralogy in geological settings just as Earth does,” said Carter.

The research may provide new clues about the evolutionary consequences of prolonged physical inactivity in humans.&nbsp;



“It’s no surprise that people are moving less and less as technology has advanced,” said Rohner. “With cavefish, we have a unique system where we can study what might happen if people remained couch potatoes over very, very long periods of time.”
