Astronomers have caught a nearby stellar duo in a dramatic act. A super-dense white dwarf star is siphoning material from its larger companion at a pace never seen before.



The system, known as V Sagittae (V Sge), sits about 10,000 light-years away and orbits so tightly that the two stars whirl around each other every 12.3 hours. 



As the white dwarf feeds, the pair blazes far brighter than similar systems - a century-old mystery that a new study says it has finally cracked.



Led by Pasi Hakala from the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> in Finland, the team used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile to probe V Sge’s extreme behavior. The results point to a runaway case of “stellar cannibalism.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-white-dwarf-in-a-feeding-frenzy">White dwarf in a feeding frenzy</h2>



White dwarfs are the ultra-compact embers left behind when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-forming-disks-surrounding-stars-often-last-much-longer-than-expected/">sun-like stars</a> exhaust their fuel. On their own, they glow faintly. Paired with a close companion, they can become voracious, as gravity from the white dwarf pulls gas - mostly hydrogen - off the neighboring star.



As that gas piles up, it heats to extraordinary temperatures and ignites thermonuclear burning on the dwarf’s surface. 



The study concludes that V Sge’s famous overbrightness comes from this very process operating at ferocious rates. It turns the white dwarf’s outer layers into a sustained, nuclear-powered beacon.



The V Sge system has baffled astronomers since its discovery in 1902 because it outshines its peers so dramatically. The study argues the system is in a “feeding frenzy,” with mass transfer exceeding what the white dwarf can absorb.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-luminous-halo-signals-instability">Luminous halo signals instability </h2>



One of the team’s most striking finds is a broad ring of gas - a luminous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathtaking-photo-shows-an-ice-halo-forming-around-the-sun/">halo</a> encircling both stars. That ring appears to be the overflow. 



The system rips material from the companion that the white dwarf can’t accrete and flings it outward to form a circumbinary shroud.



The sheer energy released in the process, the researchers say, is also jostling the system, contributing to the erratic, “wild” motion seen in monitoring data.



That halo isn’t just window dressing. It’s a clue that V Sge is being pushed toward instability. When the inflow of fuel momentarily overwhelms the white dwarf’s ability to burn it steadily, pressure can build until the surface layers detonate in a thermonuclear flash.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-rare-outburst-on-the-horizon">A rare outburst on the horizon</h2>



The team warns that V Sge is primed for a classic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-nova-explosion-nearby-star-light-up-earths-skies/">nova</a> - a powerful, but non-destructive outburst triggered when accumulated hydrogen ignites on the white dwarf’s surface. 



If that happens in the coming years, the system could brighten enough to be visible to the naked eye. It would be a rare treat for skywatchers.



Farther down the line, the endgame could be even more spectacular. As the stars spiral inward and the white dwarf gains mass, they may collide or reach a catastrophic limit.



In that scenario, V Sge would explode as a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supernovae-explosions-seem-to-have-altered-earths-climate-in-the-past-and-could-do-so-again-at-any-time/">supernova</a> - an event so luminous it would be visible even in daylight. That fate isn’t guaranteed, and it may be centuries away. But the current feeding rate and the presence of the gas ring suggest this binary is on a dangerous trajectory.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-star-system-in-real-time">A star system in real time</h2>



For decades, astronomers struggled to explain why V Sge was the brightest system of its kind. 



By tying its glare to sustained thermonuclear burning driven by extreme mass transfer - and by revealing the telltale, system-wide gas ring - the new study provides a coherent picture of how this oddball works.



It also offers a living laboratory where scientists can study how close binaries evolve and how novae trigger. It may even explain how some white dwarfs cross the threshold into supernovae.



Most of the time, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-star-redefines-our-understanding-of-stellar-evolution/">stellar evolution</a> plays out slowly, across eons. V Sagittae is a rare exception: a nearby, rapidly changing system writing its next chapter in real time. Keep an eye on the southern sky. The next burst from this hungry white dwarf could be bright enough for all of us to see.



The research is published in the journal <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2507.22637" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society</a>.

A new drug that will soon be tested in clinical trials may prevent early <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/patients-should-not-stop-taking-medications-over-coronavirus-fears/">COVID-19</a> infection. An international team of experts has demonstrated the drug's potential to block the cellular door used by SARS-CoV-2 to gain entry into human cells. 

SARS-CoV-2, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, is the scientific name of the virus that causes COVID-19. The virus shares close genetic ties with the first SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV), which infiltrated 26 countries in 2003. 

Led by Dr. Josef Penninger of the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/">University of British Columbia</a>, the research is providing new insight into how SARS-CoV-2 behaves on a cellular level. "We are hopeful our results have implications for the development of a novel drug for the treatment of this unprecedented pandemic," said Dr. Penninger.

In previous research, Dr. Penninger and his colleagues determined that a protein found on the surface of human cells, angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), serves as the key receptor for SARS. As the current COVID-19 pandemic persists, antiviral medications that can accurately target the ACE2 receptor are urgently needed.

"Our new study provides very much needed direct evidence that a drug - called APN01 (human recombinant soluble angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 - hrsACE2) - soon to be tested in clinical trials by the European biotech company Apeiron Biologics, is useful as an antiviral therapy for COVID-19," said study co-author Dr. Art Slutsky of the University of Toronto.

Using organoids produced from human kidney and blood vessel stem cells, the experts showed that SARS-CoV-2 can infect these tissues directly and then duplicate itself after gaining entry. This discovery sheds new light on how the disease evolves. The finding also explains why some patients with severe cases of COVID-19 experience multi-organ failures and cardiovascular damage.

The study revealed that hrsACE2 effectively reduced SARS-CoV-2 infection in the organoids. In cell cultures, the researchers found that hrsACE2 inhibited the SARS-CoV-2 viral load by a factor of 1,000 to 5,000, depending on the dose.

"Our study provides new insights into how SARS-CoV-2 infects the cells of the body, including in blood vessels and kidneys,” said study co-author Ali Mirazimi. "We believe adding this enzyme copy, hrsACE2, lures the virus to attach itself to the copy instead of the actual cells… It distracts the virus from infecting the cells to the same degree and should lead to a reduction in the growth of the virus in the lungs and other organs.”

Núria Montserrat, a professor at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia in Spain, explained that the use of human organoids saves valuable time compared to testing new drugs on humans. 

"This work stems from an amazing collaboration among academic researchers and companies, including Dr. Ryan Conder's gastrointestinal group at STEMCELL Technologies in Vancouver, Nuria Montserrat in Spain, Drs. Haibo Zhang and Art Slutsky from Toronto and especially Ali Mirazimi's infectious biology team in Sweden, who have been working tirelessly day and night for weeks to better understand the pathology of this disease and to provide breakthrough therapeutic options," said Dr. Penninger.

"Our previous work has helped to rapidly identify ACE2 as the entry gate for SARS-CoV-2, which explains a lot about the disease. Now we know that a soluble form of ACE2 that catches the virus away, could be indeed a very rational therapy that specifically targets the gate the virus must take to infect us. There is hope for this horrible pandemic."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/home">Cell</a>.

Trial drug may block early COVID-19 infection

The concept of having a “gut feeling” is actually more literal than you may have thought, as a new study has revealed that your stomach can send signals directly to the brain.

It’s been suggested by scientists that many different conditions and health problems like depression, obesity, and arthritis originate in the gut, but it was not understood how messages from our stomachs were sent to the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brain-connects-old-memories/">brain</a>.

Previously, researchers believed that hormones were responsible for this line of communication between the gut and brain, but a new study has identified a much more direct path that sends signals with lightning speed. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.duke.edu/">Duke University </a>conducted the study which was published in the journal Science.

“Scientists talk about appetite in terms of minutes to hours. Here we are talking about seconds," said Diego Bohórquez, the senior author of the study. “That has profound implications for our understanding of appetite. Many of the appetite suppressants that have been developed target slow-acting hormones, not fast-acting synapses. And that's probably why most of them have failed.”

You may not think of your gut as a sensory organ, like your eyes or ears, but the stomach’s ability to send signals to the brain that its hungry or full is essential for survival. 

Bohórquez previously discovered that the sensory cells lining the gut were similar to the ones located on the tongue and in the nose. 

For this study, the researchers, led by Bohórquez, mapped the signal of a rabies virus that had been dyed with a green fluorescent tag as it was carried from the stomach to the brainstem of mice. 

The researchers saw that the rabies virus traveled via the vagus nerve from the gut to the brain in under 100 milliseconds. 

After the researchers established this link, sensory gut cells of mice were grown in a dish with vagal neurons. The neurons crawled along the surface of the dish in order to connect with the gut cells, after which signals started to fire between the two. 

The rate of signals firing was sped up when the researchers introduced sugar to the dish environment. 

Glutamate, a neurotransmitter that sends signals from the other senses, was found to be responsible for sending the messages from the gut to the grain, and when the researchers blocked the release of glutamate in the sensory gut cells, no messages were sent. 

“We think these findings are going to be the biological basis of a new sense,” said Bohórquez. “One that serves as the entry point for how the brain knows when the stomach is full of food and calories. It brings legitimacy to the idea of the 'gut feeling' as a sixth sense.”

A new report from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) has revealed that the surface of Jupiter's moon Europa contains visible amounts of sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt. 

The results of a visible-light spectral analysis showed that the areas of the moon where the salt has accumulated appear yellow in color. The finding indicates that the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/sea-bird-die-offs-ocean-temperatures/">ocean</a> on Europa may be much more like our oceans than what was previously realized. 

NASA's Voyager and Galileo spacecrafts have provided scientists with evidence to suggest that Europa has a layer of water frozen at its crust with a liquid ocean under the ice. Galileo's infrared spectrometer identified ice and a substance that was possibly magnesium sulfate salts. Scientists speculated that any salt on the icy surface originated from the ocean underneath. 

Study co-author Mike Brown is a professor of Planetary Astronomy at <a href="https://www.caltech.edu/">Caltech</a>. "People have traditionally assumed that all of the interesting spectroscopy is in the infrared on planetary surfaces, because that's where most of the molecules that scientists are looking for have their fundamental features," said Professor Brown.

"No one has taken visible-wavelength spectra of Europa before that had this sort of spatial and spectral resolution. The Galileo spacecraft didn't have a visible spectrometer. It just had a near-infrared spectrometer, and in the near-infrared, chlorides are featureless," added study lead author and Caltech graduate student Samantha Trumbo.

High-quality spectral resolution data from the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii led the scientists to reevaluate what they were seeing on Europa. "We thought that we might be seeing sodium chlorides, but they are essentially featureless in an infrared spectrum," said Professor Brown.

Kevin Hand, a scientist at NASA's JPL, bombarded sample ocean salts with radiation to mimic the conditions on Europa. This lab experiment uncovered several distinct features which appeared in sodium chloride after irradiation. Sodium chloride turned a shade of yellow similar to what is visible in a geologically young area of Europa called Tara Regio.

"Sodium chloride is a bit like invisible ink on Europa's surface. Before irradiation you can't tell it's there, but after irradiation the color jumps right out at you," explained Hand.

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, the researchers identified a distinct absorption in the visible spectrum at 450 nanometers that accurately matched the irradiated salt. "We've had the capacity to do this analysis with the Hubble Space Telescope for the past 20 years," said Professor Brown. "It's just that nobody thought to look."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Jupiter’s moon Europa has salty oceans

A new report from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)...

We know that too much stress can impact health and wellbeing and even lead to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/work-stress-sleep-hypertension/">high blood pressure, insomnia</a>, and anxiety.

However, researchers from the <a href="https://www.bcm.edu/">Baylor College of Medicine</a> and the <a href="https://www.houstonmethodist.org/research/">Houston Methodist Research Institute</a> have discovered that a newly described type of stress called chromatin stress can improve longevity. 

A new study, published in the journal Science Advances, shows that chromatin stress triggers certain responses in yeast that increase lifespan. 

The research could help create new treatments for aging. 

The chromatin is a structure in the nucleus of the cells which is formed by DNA wrapping itself around histone proteins like beads on a string. As other proteins in the cells bind to the chromatin, it creates even more complicated structures. 

With chromatin stress, the structure is disrupted in a way that causes unwanted changes in gene expression. 

“Chromatin stress refers to disruptions in the way DNA is packed within the nucleus of the cell,” said Dr. Weiwei Dang, the corresponding author of the study. “One of the factors that influences chromatin structure is proteins called histones.”

For the study, the researchers studied how different amounts of histone proteins affected longevity in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. 

If the yeast were genetically engineered to carry fewer copies of histone proteins, the researchers theorized that the yeast might have a shorter lifespan compared to non-genetically engineered yeast. 

But the team found the exact opposite to be true. 

“Unexpectedly, we found that yeast with fewer copies of histone genes lived longer than the controls,” said Ruofan Yu, the first author of the study. 

When the yeast had low doses of histone genes, there was much more chromatin stress, but this stress triggered responses in the genes that helped promote longevity and increased lifespan. 

In a previous study, the researchers found that increasing or overexpressing histone genes in aging yeast improved longevity, and now the researchers have found that decreasing the number of histone gene copies in young yeast also increases lifespan. 

“We have identified a previously unrecognized and unexpected form of stress that triggers a response that benefits the organism,” said Yu. “The mechanism underlying the chromatin stress response generated by moderate reduction of histone dosage is different from the one triggered by histone overexpression we had previously described, as shown by their different profiles of protein expression responses.”

If chromatin stress triggers the same kind of response in humans, it could lead to new interventions to help reverse the aging process.

Vitamin D could help battle childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic across the world and according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/obesity/facts.htm">Centers for Disease Control</a> (CDC), by 2016 nearly 1 in 5 school-aged children in the US was considered <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/societal-changes-obesity-epidemic/">obese</a>. 

There are many health risks associated with childhood obesity including the development of diabetes, metabolic problems, and heart disease later on in life. 

A new study, conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://en.uoa.gr/">National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School </a>in Greece, found that Vitamin D supplements could be an effective treatment for combating obesity in adolescents and children.

The research was presented at the 57th annual<a href="https://www.eurospe.org/"> European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology</a> meeting.

Vitamin D deficiencies are usually linked to poor bone health and not getting enough sun.

However, there is a growing body of research on vitamin D and it's potential to help with weight loss and reduce risk factors for metabolic disease and obesity.

To understand how Vitamin D impacts obesity rates in young people, 232 obese children and adolescents were chosen to participate in the study.

For 12 months, 117 of the child participants were given recommended regular doses of vitamin D. The researchers measured vitamin D levels and took blood samples to evaluate liver and heart health at the beginning and end of the study.

At the end of the 12 months, the 117 children who had been given vitamin D supplements had a lower body mass index, body fat and better cholesterol levels according to the results. 

“These findings suggest that simple vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk of overweight and obese children developing serious heart and metabolic complications in later life,” said Evangelia Charmandari, the lead researcher of the study. 

The positive results of the study suggest that vitamin D may be a helpful asset in combating obesity and metabolic disease.

The researcher's next plan to study the impacts of Vitamin D supplements on children and adolescents with diagnosed health problems like high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Drink as a teen, and you may face liver problems as an adult. That’s the conclusion of a new study into the risks of alcohol consumption in adolescence. 

Studies have linked alcohol consumption to cirrhosis of the liver for decades, along with conditions like alcoholic hepatitis and fatty liver disease. 

Among alcoholics and chronic heavy drinkers, anywhere from 15 to 20 percent develop cirrhosis – liver damage that is, unlike fatty liver disease, irreversible. 

It turns out that when someone starts drinking may play a role in whether they develop cirrhosis, along with how much they drink.

"Our study showed that how much you drink in your late teens can predict the risk of developing cirrhosis later in life," lead investigator Dr. Hannes Hagström of Sweden’s <a href="https://www.karolinska.se/en">Karolinska University Hospital</a> said in a press release.

The new investigation used data from a 1969-1970 study of Swedish men conscripted into military service; during that period, conscription was compulsory and with few exceptions, only men who had severe disabilities were allowed to bow out.

This gave Hagström’s team around 49,000 men from ages 18 to 20 to include in their study. Using identity numbers with their conscription records, they checked to see how many of the men had developed severe liver problems including cirrhosis.

They then used information about alcohol consumption early in the men’s life to determine whether it played a role in their later liver problems. They found that the 383 men who had severe liver disease, liver failure or who had died from liver problems had a history of drinking more in late adolescence than their peers.

While the recommended alcohol limit for men is 30 grams, or about three drinks a day, the scientists found that even six grams of alcohol a day in youth can significantly raise the risk of developing cirrhosis later in life. 

"The present study adds to our knowledge about the risks of chronic alcohol consumption at a younger age," Dr. Alexandre Louvet of the <a href="http://www.chru-lille.fr/organisation-structure/hopitaux/98611.html">Hôpital Huriez</a> in France wrote in an editorial to accompany the study. "Safe levels of alcohol consumption must be revised for the general population and public health policies must be adapted accordingly.”

The study’s results are restricted to men; further study among women is needed, the researchers said.

The study was published in the <a href="http://www.journal-of-hepatology.eu/">Journal of Hepatology</a>.

Adolescent drinking can lead to adult liver problems

A new study shows that cleaning your hands not only revitalizes your skin but also stimulates your mind. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca/">University of Toronto</a> discovered that hand washing redirects the brain and allows future goals to take priority over past goals.

Put those old aspirations in your rear view and focus on what is important going forward. This is what researchers claim is an unexpected benefit of washing our hands. The scientists found that the act of cleaning off dirt operates as a catalyst for mentally disconnecting from lingering notions associated with the past.

The research team set out to evaluate the underlying mental process that takes place during handwashing with a series of four tests. The examinations began with priming the participants to become aware of certain goals through the use of word games and surveys. Some of the individuals were then asked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/washing-hands-cold-water/">wash their hands</a> with sanitized hand wipes.

The participant who used the hand wipes became less inclined to reflect on past objectives. They were also less likely to behave in a way that would support their prior goals and less likely to place value on them. Their attention was easily shifted toward future desires.

“For people who were primed with a health goal, for example, using the hand wipe reduced their subsequent tendency to behave in a healthy manner - they were more likely to choose a chocolate bar over a granola bar,' said Ping Dong,  a PhD student who took part in the study.

The findings of this study are consistent with separate research at the University of Michigan which showed that individuals felt no need to justify their decisions after washing their hands. 

Dong pointed out that the experiments focused only on the short-term mental impact of handwashing. Further work will be needed to establish the long-term effects that handwashing routines have on goal pursuit.

Study: Washing our hands also refreshes our minds

A new study shows that cleaning your hands not only...

A new process has been developed by researchers in China that turns plant waste, derived from agriculture and timber harvesting, into aviation fuel. This new, more sustainable fuel could be the key to reducing CO2 emitted by air travel.

Published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(19)30085-6">Joule</a>, the process revolves around cellulose, an abundant polymer found in the walls of plant cells. Chain alkanes pulled from cellulose have been previously used in the production of jet fuel, however, the researchers say their new process produces more complex polycycloalkane compounds that can be used as high-density aviation fuel.

The study’s author Ning Li, a research scientist at the<a href="http://english.dicp.cas.cn/"> Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics</a>, believes this new fuel could push the aviation industry to commit to and be successful in going green.

"Our biofuel is important for mitigating CO2 emissions because it is derived from biomass and it has higher density (or volumetric heat values) compared with conventional aviation fuels," Li said. "As we know, the utilization of high-density aviation fuel can significantly increase the range and payload of aircraft without changing the volume of oil in the tank."

Li and his team found that cellulose can be “selectively converted” to 2,5-hexanedione using hydrogenolysis. The team then separated 2,5-hexanedione by converting the  5-methylfurfural in hydrogenolysis to 2,5-hexanedione, while keeping 2,5-hexanedione in the overall product unchanged. What they ended up with is a 71% isolated carbon yield.

The team then caused a reaction between hydrogen with the 2,5-hexanedione derived from wheatgrass cellulose to get their final product: a mix of C12 and C18 polycycloalkanes with a low freezing point and a density of about 10% higher than that of conventional <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/jet-fuel-biofuel-blend/">jet fuels</a>. The high density means the product can be used as a wholesale replacement fuel or as an additive to existing fuels to improve efficiency.

"The aircraft using this fuel can fly farther and carry more than those using conventional jet fuel, which can decrease the flight number and decrease the CO2 emissions during the taking off (or launching) and landing," Li said.

Because the process to produce this fuel is so cheap and sustainable, Li believes the fuel will be ready for commercial use in the very near future. The team must first work around using dichloromethane, found in paint removers, to break the cellulose down because the compound is considered an environmental and health hazard.

"In the future, we will go on to explore the environmentally friendly and renewable organic solvent that can replace the dichloromethane used in the hydrogenolysis of cellulose to 2,5-hexanedione," Li continued. "At the same time, we will study the application of 2,5-hexanedione in the synthesis of other fuels and value-added chemicals."

Methanotrophic bacteria are known for their incredible ability to remove <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/melting-ice-sheets-release-methane/">methane</a> from the environment and convert it into fuel, but exactly how the bacteria initiate this transformation has been unclear. 

In a groundbreaking new study, experts at <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/">Northwestern University</a> have discovered that the catalyst for the methane-methanol conversion induces this complex reaction at a site that contains just one copper ion. 

“The identity and structure of the metal ions responsible for catalysis have remained elusive for decades,” said study co-senior author Amy C. Rosenzweig. “Our study provides a major leap forward in understanding how bacteria methane-to-methanol conversion.”

The results of the research may ultimately lead to the development of man-made catalysts that can easily convert methane to usable fuel.

“By identifying the type of copper center involved, we have laid the foundation for determining how nature carries out one of its most challenging reactions,” explained co-senior author Brian M. Hoffman.

Methanotrophic bacteria, also known as “methanotrophs,” are not only removing a harmful greenhouse gas from the atmosphere by converting methane to methanol, but are also producing fuel for electricity and vehicles that is sustainable and ready to use. 

The process that is currently used to generate a methane-to-methanol reaction is very demanding and requires tremendous pressure and extreme temperatures higher than 1,300 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, methanotrophs can deliver this service at room temperature without any additional requirements. 

“While copper sites are known to catalyze methane-to-methanol conversion in human-made materials, methane-to-methanol catalysis at a monocopper site under ambient conditions is unprecedented,” said study first author and graduate student Matthew O. Ross. “If we can develop a complete understanding of how they perform this conversion at such mild conditions, we can optimize our own catalysts.”

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mindfulness-meditation-treat-anxiety/">meditation</a> and focused breathing practice have been long-claimed to increase one’s ability to focus more clearly on tasks. Breath-focused meditation and yogic breathing practices are known to have a number of cognitive benefits, ranging from increased focus and positive emotions to decreased emotional reactivity and improved arousal levels. Despite this, no direct neurophysiological link has been found between respiration and cognition… until now. 

New research has shown for the first time that meditation and breathing exercises directly affect the levels of a natural chemical messenger in the brain called noradrenaline. 

Noradrenaline is released when we are focused, challenged, curious, exercised, or emotionally aroused — although hopefully not all at the same time. If produced at the right levels, it can help the brain develop new connections. This means that the way we breathe has a direct effect on our brain chemistry, and can enhance our attention as well as improve our brain health.

The research was done by scientists at <a href="https://www.tcd.ie/Neuroscience/">Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience</a> and the <a href="http://www.gbhi.org/">Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity</a>. They looked to measure study participants’ breathing, reaction time, and brain activity in an area of the brain stem called the locus coeruleus – where noradrenaline is made. The researchers discovered that participants who focused well while doing a task that necessitated a lot of focus had greater synchronization between their breathing patterns and their attention, compared to those who focused poorly.

“This study has shown that as you breathe in locus coeruleus activity is increasing slightly, and as you breathe out it decreases,” explains Michael Melnychuk, a PhD candidate at the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, and lead author of the study. “Put simply this means that our attention is influenced by our breath and that it rises and falls with the cycle of respiration. It is possible that by focusing on and regulating your breathing you can optimize your attention level and likewise, by focusing on your attention level, your breathing becomes more synchronized.”

The findings, published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14698986">Psychophysiology</a>, give a deeper look into the neurophysiological mechanisms that are behind ancient meditation practices. Additional research may help with the development of non-pharmacological therapies for people with attention compromised conditions like ADHD and traumatic brain injury.

“Our findings could have particular implications for research into brain ageing. Brains typically lose mass as they age, but less so in the brains of long term meditators,” says Ian Robertson, Co-Director of the <a href="http://www.gbhi.org/">Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity</a> and Principal Investigator of the study. “More ‘youthful’ brains have a reduced risk of dementia and mindfulness meditation techniques actually strengthen brain networks. Our research offers one possible reason for this - using our breath to control one of the brain's natural chemical messengers, noradrenaline, which in the right ‘dose’ helps the brain grow new connections between cells. This study provides one more reason for everyone to boost the health of their brain using a whole range of activities ranging from aerobic exercise to mindfulness meditation.”

Our lives are strongly impacted by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/axial-cycles-antarctic-sea-ice/">astronomical cycles</a> including the rotation of the Earth on its axis and the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. These cycles determine the changing of the seasons and serve as a consistent way to measure time.

Geologists can use this astronomical clock to study major climate variation like the changes in the Earth’s orbit that helped bring about the ice ages.  

It’s possible to date these orbital changes thanks to the development of an astronomical time scale that dates geologic periods in relation to astronomical cycles going back millions of years. 

Researchers can match cycles in geologic archives to the cycles of an astronomical solution which is calculated by looking at planetary orbits backward through time. Think of the astronomical solution as a calculated astronomical parameter with a built-in clock which helps with archiving geologic periods.

However, this timescale or calendar has limits and only stretches back around 50 million years ago. Attempting to date geologic records and astronomical cycles before this time is hindered by something called solar system chaos.

Researchers from the <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">University of Hawaii at Manoa </a>and <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en">Utrecht University</a> have found a way to get around solar system chaos and extend the astronomical time scale by eight million years.

The researchers analyzed data from drill cores dating back to the Early Eocene, 58 to 53 million years ago. The sediment data in the cores detailed the Earth’s elliptical orbit around the Sun or its eccentricity.

The researchers also calculated a new astronomical solution that matched the drill core data.

“This was truly stunning,” said Richard Zeebe, a co-author of the study. “We had this one curve based on data from over 50-million-year-old sediment drilled from the ocean floor and then the other curve entirely based on physics and numerical integration of the solar system. So the two curves were derived entirely independently, yet they looked almost like identical twins.”

The new astronomical solution was called ZB18a, and after testing 18 different computations, the new solution was the most accurate in terms of matching with the 50 million-year-old sediment core data.

The research has many wide-reaching implications, including the discovery that the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum was jump started by an orbital trigger which could help inform future climate studies factoring in the impact of astronomical cycles on climate.

Breeding roses for color, appearance, or pest resistance, can take up to a decade, and even then there have been complaints that genetically modified roses lose some of their strong, attractive scents. 

This is why a team of French researchers decided to sequence the genome of a rose plant and use CRISPR technology, which can edit and cut DNA, to speed up the process of creating the perfect rose. 

The results were published in the journal Nature Genetics.

The researchers wanted to find a way to make roses resistance to common diseases and pests in hopes that it would extend their life after the roses are cut. 

Roses are of course highly valued both economically and aesthetically. Their scents are used in countless fragrances, perfumes, and bath products and a rose bush is a great addition to any garden. 

Finding a way to make the roses last and resist disease without sacrificing scent or appearance would be beneficial to florists, gardeners, and consumers alike. 

There are currently 200 species of the genus Rosa and roses were <a href="https://extension.illinois.edu/roses/history.cfm">first cultivated</a> 5,000 years ago. 

As part of the study, the researchers fully sequenced the genome of a garden rose for the first time in order to identify its natural traits and what genes are responsible for scent and color. 

The species Rosa chinensis, or ‘Old Blush,’ was used for the study because it was one of the first varieties of roses imported from China in the 18th century. 

In order to map the genome, the researchers extracted DNA from young leaves of the rose plant. 

After sequencing the rose, the researchers found more genes that give the rose it’s pleasant scent than were ever identified in previous research. The researchers also identified color genes and genes that could make roses last longer after they’re cut. 

Future studies could use this new information to edit the rose DNA using CRISPR technology to improve the rose’s scent, susceptibility to disease, and color. 

“I hope we will be able to change how these flowers look in the future and make them last longer with more of a scent, which is lost the longer roses stay in a vase,” said Mohammed Bendahmane, a co-author of the study.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.

During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
