Grains feed billions every day. Yet people still argue about which ones deserve a spot on the plate. Whole grains often get praise. Refined grains often get the blame. The truth, as a new study shows, is more complicated.



Researchers looked at more than 14,000 Americans and tracked what they ate. They used national survey data collected between 2017 and 2023, combining diet records with health markers such as weight, waist size, and insulin levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-different-grains">Analyzing different grains</h2>



The team came from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> and a French nutrition group. They used national survey data collected between 2017 and 2023. They combined diet records with health markers such as weight, waist size, and insulin levels. 



The study also considered cost - an issue that often keeps families from choosing healthier foods. By linking <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mind-diet-may-protect-cognitive-health/">nutrition scores</a> with affordability, the researchers could see not only which foods improved health but also which ones people could realistically buy.



This practical lens matters, because guidance that ignores price often fails in everyday life, leaving healthier choices out of reach for many households.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoring-nutrients-in-grains">Scoring nutrients in grains</h2>



The researchers built scoring systems. One focused on whole grain content, fiber, and added sugar. Another measured nine nutrients we need - such as protein, folate, and magnesium - against three we should limit: sugar, sodium, and saturated fat.



Foods that performed well were tagged as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-food-nutrition-labels-may-be-based-on-50-year-old-data/">healthy</a> grains, while those lacking balance fell short. 



This dual approach gave a sharper view, showing not just which grains are wholesome, but also why certain fortified foods deserve recognition alongside traditional whole grain options.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grains-with-strong-nutrients">Grains with strong nutrients</h2>



Cooked grains did well. So did cooked cereals and fortified grains in breads. Some ready-to-eat cereals also scored high, but only when sugar stayed low. 



Sweet bakery goods, snack bars, and quick breads landed at the bottom. They offered calories but almost no nutrients, highlighting how certain popular items fill stomachs without delivering meaningful health benefits.



The contrast between fortified choices and sugar-heavy products shows why nutrient density, not just grain type, makes the real difference in improving diets.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-eating-patterns-matter">Eating patterns matter</h2>



The study showed who eats these grains. Women and older adults ate more of them. Mexican Americans included them often too. Non-Hispanic Black participants ate the least.



Income made a difference: higher income groups leaned toward healthier grain choices. Regional differences also appeared, with some communities relying more on fortified breads and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/childrens-cereals-now-contain-more-sugar-and-fat-than-ever/">cereals</a>. 



Still, even the best groups ate less than one-third of their grains from nutrient-dense foods, showing plenty of room for improvement.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-grains-better-nutrition">More grains, better nutrition</h2>



Those who ate more healthy grains had better overall diets. They consumed more fruits and vegetables. They cut down on added sugar, sodium, and saturated fat. 



They also got more protein, calcium, potassium, and iron. These benefits grew stronger the more healthy grains people ate.



The gains extended to health outcomes. Adults eating nutrient-rich grains were less likely to have higher body weight. Their insulin levels were lower, indicating stronger metabolic health. Their cholesterol levels also improved in some cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-healthy-grains-don-t-cost-more">Healthy grains don’t cost more</h2>



Nutritious foods often cost more, but that assumption did not hold here. Healthy grains were not more expensive than less nutritious ones. In some cases, fortified cereals and breads even cost less per gram or per calorie.



“Healthy grains are a critical component of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-break-down-the-best-heart-healthy-diets/">healthy diets</a>," said Dr. Adam Drewnowski, Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Washington.



“Our evaluation took whole grain content into account, along with fiber, vitamins and minerals. By delivering key nutrients such as fiber, iron, B vitamins and folate, grain foods can make a meaningful contribution to healthier eating patterns among all population groups.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nutrients-matter-more-than-labels">Nutrients matter more than labels</h2>



This study shows that grain choices are not black and white. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/that-whole-wheat-bread-youve-been-eating-is-often-a-trap-its-not-what-you-think-it-is/">Whole grains</a> matter, but fortified refined grains can also help. What counts is nutrient density. That shift in perspective makes it easier for people to build healthier diets without higher costs or strict rules.



Grains will remain central to our diets. Choosing nutrient-dense ones - whether whole or fortified - can improve health without draining wallets. Balance matters more than rigid categories, and the study makes that clear. 



Eating patterns shaped by variety and affordability work better long term. Rather than avoiding entire grain types, people can focus on smarter selections, building meals that deliver taste, nutrition, and practicality without unnecessary restrictions.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/17/16/2674" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nutrients</a>.

What if we could tackle the problem of energy-consuming air conditioners and the goal of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-capture-climate-change/">carbon capture</a> in one? 

In a new paper published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-019-09685-x">Nature Communications</a>, researchers from Germany and Canada propose a novel strategy to help mitigate climate change while still keeping homes cool in the summer by using air conditioning units to capture carbon and convert that carbon into fuel. 

The researchers envision a new concept where consumers would generate their own fuel, much like how solar panels can power an entire home, while capturing carbon thousands of times more efficiently than trees. 

“Imagine the renewable-electricity-powered air conditioning system in your house, apartment or office at work, besides functioning for cooling and heating, being adapted to capture carbon dioxide and water from the air,” the authors of the study write. “Imagine the water and carbon dioxide thus collected converted into renewable hydrocarbon fuels using existing technology and thereby creating personalized, localized and distributed, synthetic oil wells.” 

The researchers have developed an experimental model, but as of now, the design is still very much in its early stages. 

“The plan in two or three years is to have the first experimental showcase where I can show you a bottle of hydrocarbon fuel from carbon dioxide captured in an air-conditioning unit,” Roland Dittmeyer, a chemical engineer leading the new project, told <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/could-air-conditioning-fix-climate-change/">Scientific American.</a>

Using air conditioning units is a crucial element of the project as air conditioners are projected to use up as much electricity as China currently uses by the midcentury, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/15/climate/air-conditioning.html">New York Times. </a>

Not only do air conditioners need a lot of electricity, but they also contribute to atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions. 

The researchers predict that if air conditioning carbon capturing units were installed in 25,000 German supermarkets, collectively they would pull 1,000 tons of CO2 from the air every hour. 

“The vision of empowering people with a technology to become energy independent while contributing to a circular economy, a “social energy autarky”, gives control to the people to help solve the greenhouse gas, global warming and climate change problems themselves rather than having to rely on the power-generating industries to rise to the challenge,” the researchers conclude in their paper.

Could air conditioners capture carbon while efficiently cooling buildings?

What if we could tackle the problem of energy-consuming air...

In a breakthrough study using <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/rigorous-standards-crispr-baby-crisis/">CRISPR</a> genome editing technology, researchers at the <a href="https://sydney.edu.au/">University of Sydney</a> have identified an antidote to the deadly sting of the Australian box jellyfish, which is one of the most venomous creatures in the world. 

One Australian box jellyfish carries enough venom to kill more than 60 humans. This deadly creature has about 60 tentacles, and each contains millions of microscopic hooks filled with venom. 

A single sting by an Australian box jellyfish will cause necrosis of the skin and extreme pain. If a large enough dose of venom is delivered, the sting can cause cardiac arrest and death within minutes.

A team of pain researchers was studying how the box jellyfish venom works when they uncovered a treatment that can block the symptoms of a box jellyfish sting if administered to the skin within 15 minutes of contact. The researchers now hope to develop a topical application for humans.

“We were looking at how the venom works, to try to better understand how it causes pain,” said study senior author Professor Greg Neely. “Using new CRISPR genome editing techniques we could quickly identify how this venom kills human cells.”

“Luckily, there was already a drug that could act on the pathway the venom uses to kill cells, and when we tried this drug as a venom antidote on mice, we found it could block the tissue scarring and pain related to jellyfish stings. It is super exciting.”

The experts used CRISPR whole genome editing to investigate how the venom works. They looked for human cells that could survive the venom, and identified human factors that are required for the venom to cause its deadly reaction. 

“The jellyfish venom pathway we identified in this study requires cholesterol, and since there are lots of drugs available that target cholesterol, we could try to block this pathway to see how this impacted venom activity,” explained study lead author Dr. Raymond Lau. “We took one of those drugs, which we know is safe for human use, and we used it against the venom, and it worked. It's a molecular antidote.”

“It's the first molecular dissection of how this type of venom works, and possible how any venom works,” said Dr. Lau. “I haven't seen a study like this for any other venom.”

“We know the drug will stop the necrosis, skin scarring and the pain completely when applied to the skin,” said Professor Neely. “We don't know yet if it will stop a heart attack. That will need more research and we are applying for funding to continue this work.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/about">Nature Communications</a>.

In a breakthrough in bioengineering, researchers have found a way to successfully replicate complex vascular systems with 3D printing.

With over 100,000 people on organ transplant waiting lists in the US, there is a critical need for widely available and effective <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-human-kidneys-feasible/">organ replacements</a> that won’t require life-long immune-suppressing treatments.  

There has been a growing interest in using 3D printing to create functional working organ replacements, but one of the biggest challenges that come with bioprinting is replicating the complex and extremely detailed vascular networks that transport blood, air, and fluids through the body. 

Bioengineers from <a href="https://www.rice.edu/">Rice University</a> and a collaborative team of researchers from the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington</a>, <a href="https://www.duke.edu/">Duke University</a>,<a href="http://www.rowan.edu/"> Rowan University</a> and <a href="https://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/">Nervous System,</a> a design firm in Massachusetts, have found a way to 3D print intricate tissues. 

The researchers designed and printed a functioning hydrogel model that mimics the airways in the lung that deliver oxygen to blood vessels. 

A new study, published in the journal Science, describes the detailed hydrogel model and experiments with mice and bioprinted tissue containing liver cells.  

“One of the biggest roadblocks to generating functional tissue replacements has been our inability to print the complex vasculature that can supply nutrients to densely populated tissues,” said Jordan Miller, a leader of the research. “Ours is the first bioprinting technology that addresses the challenge of multivascularization directly and comprehensively.”

To produce a working lung-like air sac with complete vascular airways, the researchers created a new kind of bioprinting technology called “stereolithography apparatus for tissue engineering” (SLATE) which makes soft hydrogels one layer at a time. 

These liquid hydrogel layers become a solid once exposed to blue light, and the researchers tested the structure by mimicking airflow to ensure that the 3D printed vascular system could withstand the pressure and volume of blood and oxygen flow in the human body.  

In another experiment, the researchers 3D printed tissues and filled them with liver cells before implanting them into mice. The tissues had compartments for blood vessels and liver cells and implants were placed in mice with liver injuries. 

The results could help pave the way for implants for patients suffering from liver disease. 

“With the addition of multivascular and intravascular structure, we’re introducing an extensive set of design freedoms for engineering living tissue,” said Miller. “We now have the freedom to build many of the intricate structures found in the body.”

3D printed lungs and livers may soon be a reality for organ transplants

Around 75 percent of U.S. gold production as well as five percent of global gold production originated in the Carlin-type gold deposits in Nevada. In these deposits, gold is hidden together with arsenic in pyrite, which is also known as “fool's gold.” 

A team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.gfz-potsdam.de/en/home/">German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ</a> has now demonstrated, for the first time, that the concentration of gold directly depends on the content of arsenic in the pyrite.

The element gold occurs in the Earth's crust in concentrations of 2.5 parts per billion (ppb). The gold concentration must be thousands of times higher, and found in a focused area close to the surface, to be mined at a reasonable cost.

In the gold deposits of the Carlin-type, the gold is not even visible to humans. It occurs in tiny pyrite rims that grow on older “fool's gold” grains which originate from sedimentary rocks.


A team of researchers led by Christof Kusebauch showed in lab experiments that the element arsenic plays a crucial role in extracting gold from hot solutions passing through the rock. The higher the concentration of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/arsenic-metals-fruit-juices/">arsenic</a>, the more frequently gold chemically binds with pyrite. 

The experts also found that the shape of the older pyrite is important. The study revealed that more gold can accumulate on a larger surface area of pyrite.

The team used iron-rich carbonates and sulfur-rich solutions to synthesize their fool's gold crystals. 

“Only then we were able to show that the partition coefficient which controls how much gold is incorporated into pyrite depends on the amount of arsenic,” said Kusebauch. “The major challenge was to experimentally grow gold and arsenic bearing pyrite crystals that were big enough to analyze.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Fool’s gold? Scientists find a new way to predict gold concentrations

New research from <a href="https://www.tsinghua.edu.cn/publish/thu2018en/index.html">Tsinghua University, Beijing</a> provides evidence to show that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-nasal-passages-cool/">dinosaurs</a> may have used running to passively flap their wings before evolving to fly, thus providing new insight into the origins of avian flight. The findings are published in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol/">PLOS Computational Biology</a>.

After the discovery of Archaeopteryx in 1861, scientists believed a type of gliding flight developed early on, which later led to flapping flight. However, more and more evidence points to the fact that active flapping may have evolved separate from gliding altogether.

Researcher Jing-Shan Zhao and his colleagues from Tsinghua examined this theory further by studying Caudipteryx, catalogued as the most-primitive, non-flying dinosaur who had feathered “proto-wings.” It is believed that Caudipteryx weighed about 5 kilograms and was able to run up to 8 meters per second.

The team first analyzed the mechanical effects of running on different parts of Caudipteryx’s body using a mathematical method called modal effective mass theory. They found that if Caudipteryx ran between about 2.5 to 5.8 meters per second, enough forced vibrations would have caused its proto-wings to flap.

Zhao and his team then built a robot model of Caudipteryx to confirm that running at these speeds caused a passive flapping motion of the wings. Even testing their theory on a young ostrich, which they fitted with similar proto-wings as Caudipteryx, proved it true.

"Our work shows that the motion of flapping feathered wings was developed passively and naturally as the dinosaur ran on the ground," Zhao said. "Although this flapping motion could not lift the dinosaur into the air at that time, the motion of flapping wings may have developed earlier than gliding."

Zhou says that he and his colleagues will now study the lift and thrust of Caudipteryx’s wings mid-passive flapping.

For many people, there is no beverage more satisfying than a powerfully hoppy IPA or a bold, dark roast <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/lactic-acid-perfect-coffee/">coffee</a>. If you ask them what they like about these drinks, you’ll likely get a long-winded answer about the flavor profile of the bean or the seven different kinds of hops used in the brew, but a new study from <a href="https://www.nm.org/">Northwestern Medicine</a> shows there may be more to it than that.

In this study, published in <a href="https://academic.oup.com/hmg">Human Molecular Genetics</a>, scientist Marilyn Cornelis searched for variations in our taste genes that may explain our beverage preferences. Through collecting 24-hour dietary recalls and questionnaires about how many different types of beverages were consumed by about 336,000 people in the UK Biobank, they could do a genome-wide association study of bitter and sweet beverage consumption. 

Surprisingly, the results showed that taste preferences for bitter or sweet beverages are not based on variations in taste genes, but rather the genes related to psychoactive properties in these drinks. 

“The genetics underlying our preferences are related to the psychoactive components of these drinks,” says Cornelis, an assistant professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “People like the way coffee and alcohol make them feel. That’s why they drink it. It’s not the taste.”

Cornelis was able to find one variant in a gene known as FTO, which was linked to sugar-sweetened beverages. Individuals with a variant in this gene preferred sugar-sweetened drinks, which is somewhat counterintuitive due to the fact that the same variant was previously linked to a lower risk of obesity. 

“FTO has been something of a mystery gene, and we don’t know exactly how it’s linked to obesity,” explains Cornelis. “It likely plays a role in behavior, which would be linked to weight management.”

This study also highlighted integral behavior-reward components of beverage choice, and contributes to our understanding of the link between genetics and beverage consumption, as well as the potential problems that arise in people’s diets. Sugar-sweetened drinks are related to a plethora of disease and health conditions, while alcohol intake is linked to over 200 diseases and accounts for about 6 percent of deaths globally. 

Understanding how a person’s genetic make-up determines their preference for certain food and beverages may one day help us with better intervention in the diets of those who may be headed for health risks. 

“To our knowledge, this is the first genome-wide association study of beverage consumption based on taste perspective,” says Victor Zhong, the study’s first author and postdoctoral fellow in preventive medicine at Northwestern. “It’s also the most comprehensive genome-wide association study of beverage consumption to date.”

Since their discovery in 2010, Denisovans have become a hominin of great interest to archeologists, especially because of what they might reveal about early human migrations and interbreeding. 

However, finding fossil evidence of our earliest human relatives outside of the Denisova Cave in Russia, where the first Denisovan fossils were found, has remained a challenge for researchers. 

Now, a key fossil confirms that Denisovans were among the first hominins that settled on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/denisovans-harsh-tibetan-plateau/">Tibetan Plateau</a>, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.eva.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology</a>. 

“Traces of Denisovan DNA are found in present-day Asian, Australian and Melanesian populations, suggesting that these ancient hominins may have once been widespread,” said Jean-Jacques Hublin, a co-author of the study. “Yet so far the only fossils representing this ancient hominin group were identified at Denisova Cave.”

The discovery was made possible due to a lower mandible fossil found in the Baishiya Karst Cave in Xiahe, China on the Tibetan Plateau. 

“The Xiahe mandible likely represents the earliest hominin fossil on the Tibetan Plateau,” said Fahu Chen, the first author of the study. 

The mandible was first discovered in 1980, but recently both the fossil itself and the surrounding area has become part of a collaborative research project between researchers from the Max Planck Institute and <a href="https://en.lzu.edu.cn/">Lanzhou University</a>. 

No traces of DNA were found in the well-preserved fossil, but the researchers were able to extract and analyze proteins from one of the molars still attached to the mandible bone. 

“The ancient proteins in the mandible are highly degraded and clearly distinguishable from modern proteins that may contaminate a sample,” said Frido Welker, a lead author of the study. “Our protein analysis shows that the Xiahe mandible belonged to a hominin population that was closely related to the Denisovans from Denisova Cave.”

The shape and size of the molars indicate that the bone belonged to a Middle Pleistocene hominin possessing traits similar to both Neanderthals and Denisovans. 

After dating the thick layer of carbonate crust that the mandible was embedded in, the researchers estimated that the fossil is 160,000 years old which is equal to the oldest fossils found in the Denisova Cave. 

“Archaic hominins occupied the Tibetan Plateau in the Middle Pleistocene and successfully adapted to high-altitude low-oxygen environments long before the regional arrival of modern Homo sapiens,” said Dongju Zhang, a co-author of the study. “Our analyses pave the way towards a better understanding of the evolutionary history of Middle Pleistocene hominins in East Asia.”

The researchers published their findings in the journal Nature.

Early Denisovans inhabited the Tibetan Plateau before Neanderthals

The first-ever measurements of water have been found on samples taken from the surface of asteroid Itokawa. A team led by Ziliang Jin, a postdoctoral scholar at <a href="https://sese.asu.edu/">Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration</a>, and Maitrayee Bose, an assistant professor at the School of Earth and Space Exploration, made the discovery. They share their findings in the May 1st issue of <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

The presence of water on the asteroid surface suggests that similar asteroids could have delivered as much as half of Earth’s ocean water at the very beginning of our planet’s history.

"We found the samples we examined were enriched in water compared to the average for inner solar system objects," Jin said. The fragments of Itokawa were collected by the Japanese space probe Hayabusa, and before the team approached the Hayabusa project with their desire to investigate potential water on the asteroid, the theory was never considered.

"Until we proposed it, no one thought to look for water," Bose said. "I'm happy to report that our hunch paid off. It was a privilege that the Japanese space agency JAXA was willing to share five particles from Itokawa with a U.S. investigator. It also reflects well on our School."

Itokawa currently circles the Sun about every 18 months in an orbit that takes it close to Earth and then a bit beyond Mars. It’s about 1,800 feet long and 700-1,000 feet wide. It’s classified as a S-class <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/nasa-protect-earth-major-asteroid/">asteroid</a>.

“S-type asteroids are one of the most common objects in the asteroid belt," Bose said. "They originally formed at a distance from the Sun of one-third to three times Earth's distance." 

"The particles we analyzed came from a part of Itokawa called the Muses Sea," she continued. "It's an area on the asteroid that's smooth and dust-covered."

"Although the samples were collected at the surface, we don't know where these grains were in the original parent body,” Jin added. “But our best guess is that they were buried more than 100 meters deep within it."

Jin, Bose, and their team were able to find pyroxene in two of the five Itokawa particles — a mineral that contains water in its crystal structure. Therefore, they had hope that Itokawa contained some bits of water. They used ASU's Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (NanoSIMS) to study the samples, each being thinner than a strand of human hair. The NanoSIMS found that both particles in question were rich with water.

"The Hayabusa mission to Itokawa has expanded our knowledge of the volatile contents of the bodies that helped form Earth,” Bose said. “It would not be surprising if a similar mechanism of water production is common for rocky exoplanets around other stars."

Researchers at <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a> have created a new method that could potentially store data for millions of years outside of the internet. Unlike cloud storage, which uses up a lot of energy, saving the data with the team’s molecular storage technique requires no additional energy once it is written. 

“Think storing the contents of the New York Public Library with a teaspoon of protein,” said study first author Brian Cafferty. “At least at this stage, we do not see this method competing with existing methods of data storage. We instead see it as complementary to those technologies and, as an initial objective, well suited for long-term archival data storage.”

Researchers can now manipulate <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dna-rna-earth/">DNA strands</a> to record and store information, but the new filing system offers an enticing alternative to this and other biological storage tools. 

“We set out to explore a strategy that does not borrow directly from biology,” said Cafferty. “We instead relied on techniques common in organic and analytical chemistry, and developed an approach that uses small, low molecular weight molecules to encode information.”


The team can produce enough small molecules to encode multiple videos at a time, making this method less labor intensive and cheaper than DNA storage. For their low-weight molecules, the experts selected oligopeptides, which are common, stable, and smaller than DNA, RNA, or proteins.

According to the researchers, a mixture of eight oligopeptides can store one byte of information, 32 can store four bytes, and so on. After writing and storing various information, the team found that the data can be retrieved with 99.9 percent accuracy. 

The resilient molecules can survive without light or oxygen and in high heat. “Oligopeptides have stabilities of hundreds or thousands of years under suitable conditions,” wrote the researchers. 

The scalable molecular library is a stable, zero-energy, and corruption-resistant option for future information storage.

Skeletons excavated from Norton Priory in England contain a rare and unusually aggressive form of a bone disease similar to Paget’s disease, according to a new archeological study. 

Paget’s disease of bone is a chronic disorder where new bone tissue gradually replaces old bone tissue. However, the new replacement tissue is weak which makes some bones easily susceptible to fracturing, breaking, and damage. 

The earliest reports of Paget’s disease were found in ancient Roman remains, but little is known about the history, origin, and evolution of the disease. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/">University of Nottingham</a> and a team of collaborators analyzed excavated remains from the priory dating back to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/skeleton-reveals-hints-leprosy-spread-medieval-europe/">Medieval period</a>. Six out of the 130 skeletons excavated contained a strange form of Paget’s. 

As much as 75 percent of the skeletons of some individuals were affected by the disease. The researchers also calculated an age of death as low as 35 for some of the individuals directly due to the disease. 

“We identify an ancient and atypical form of Paget’s disease of bone (PDB) in a collection of medieval skeletons exhibiting unusually extensive pathological changes, high disease prevalence, and low age-at-death estimations,” the researchers wrote in their study, which was published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/content/early/2019/04/24/1820556116">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>. 

The team sequenced DNA from the preserved remains and used RNA and protein analysis to identify an ancient protein similar to one called p62, which plays a fundamental role in Paget's disease today. 

“Detection of ancient p62 as one of the few noncollagenous proteins in skeletal samples (bones and teeth) based on a combination of peptide sequencing and Western blotting is strongly indicative of a diagnosis of PDB…,” the researchers wrote. 

Paget’s disease is believed to have originated in Western Europe and the UK.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine warned on Monday that collision with an asteroid large enough to destroy a U.S. state or a European country is a real possibility. At the Planetary Defense Conference in Washington, D.C., Bridenstine suggested that more action is needed to protect our planet from meteor crashes. 

“We have to make sure that people understand that this is not about Hollywood, it's not about movies,” said Bridenstine. “This is about ultimately protecting the only planet we know right now to host life, and that is the planet Earth.”

“We know for a fact that the dinosaurs did not have a space program. But we do, and we need to use it,” he added.

A meteorite that exploded over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in 2013 injured more than 1,500 people and had 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. According to Bridenstine, a much larger object approached the Earth just 16 hours later that failed to make an impact. 

“I wish I could tell you that these events are exceptionally unique, but they are not,” said Bridenstine. “These events are not rare - they happen. It’s up to us to make sure that we are characterizing, detecting, tracking all of the near-Earth objects that could be a threat to the world.”

While scientific models predict that a meteor crash will only occur once every 60 years, Bridenstine pointed out that destructive meteorites have struck our planet three times in the last century.

In 2018, the White House released the National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan, an 18-page document outlining the steps that NASA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will take over the next decade to prevent dangerous <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-diversion-projectile-impacts/">asteroid</a> strikes.

The action plan requires NASA to detect, track, and characterize 90 percent of near-Earth objects measuring 460 feet in diameter, but the agency is still working to meet that goal.

“We’re only about a third of the way there,” said Bridenstine. “We want more international partners that can join us in this effort. We want more systems on the face of the Earth that can detect and track these objects, and we want to be able to feed all of that data into one single operating system so that ultimately, we have the best, most accurate data that we can possibly get.”

Last fall, Chinese biophysicist He Jianku shocked the world when he announced the successful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gene-edited-dna-twin-babies/">birth of twins with edited genomes</a>. What followed was a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/china-gene-edited-babies-illegal/">large scale condemnation of the project</a> from the scientific community regarding the lack of any scientific review and consideration for the ethical ramifications. 

The “CRISPR Baby Scientist” claimed to disable a specific gene using CRISPR technology to ensure that the twins would not become infected with HIV during their lives. 

There are concerns that in disabling the gene, He inadvertently opened the door for other mutations that could cause health problems. 

Although the end goal is seemingly admirable, the lack of safeguards and disregard safety procedures has caused an uproar. 

The question is now that Pandora’s box has been opened, how can the scientific community proceed with CRISPR research in a safe, ethical, and methodical way?

Arthur Caplan, a medical ethicist from<a href="https://med.nyu.edu/education"> New York University’s School of Medicine,</a> addressed this matter of CRISPR ethics in a new paper published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3000223">PLOS Biology</a>. 

Caplan argues that the latest controversy highlights the need for established and rigorous standards for such research dealing with genomes and germline gene therapy. 

“A deep understanding of the mechanisms and potential side-effects of embryo editing is an absolute pre-requisite to any further discussion of its implementation,” Caplan wrote. “At present, human embryonic editing, particularly in regard to how DNA is repaired, following an induced break, is poorly understood.”

It’s important to note moratoriums on embryo gene editing were in place before He conducted his experiment. 

Caplan recommends that an oversight organization including review boards and ethics committees be formed specifically to enforce and regulate future CRISPR research. 

This organization could ensure that no studies involving improperly and unethical practices are published, and that participants are properly informed before consenting to any experiments. 

“It is not sufficient to establish that germline research ought to be temporarily halted or cautiously proceed despite ethical lapses,” said Caplan.  “Regulation and penalties need sufficient bite to assure the public that renegade science has no future in designing our descendants.”

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.



"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
