<p>In Uganda’s Kibale National Park, scientists have spent years doing the slow, unglamorous work of catching tiny wasps. The payoff is big: a clearer map of “dark biodiversity” - the vast share of species that are poorly known or not yet described - and practical clues for how to protect it before it disappears.</p>



<p>Most of Earth’s species have never been formally documented, making them easy to overlook in conservation plans. Biologists call these overlooked lineages “dark taxa.” They are especially abundant in tropical forests, where species, habitats, and ecological roles remain thinly studied.</p>



<p>The Biodiversity Unit at the <a href="https://www.utu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Turku</a> has made a specialty of unveiling this hidden diversity, describing new species each year, and building tools to slow global biodiversity loss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-living-lab-for-biodiversity">A living lab for biodiversity</h2>



<p>Kibale National Park offers a mosaic of habitats. These include tracts of largely undisturbed forest, areas recovering from past logging, and nearby farmland. That patchwork allowed researchers to ask a simple but powerful question: where, exactly, is the unknown diversity concentrated?</p>



<p>The team focused on ichneumonid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-parasitic-wasps-quietly-crossed-oceans-now-thriving-in-u-s-oak-trees/">wasps</a> - one of the most diverse animal groups on the planet - and, within it, the subfamily Pimplinae.</p>



<p>These wasps don’t just buzz around flowers. They regulate other species by parasitizing the immature stages of insects and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-with-spiders-brain-suggests-arachnids-originated-in-the-sea/">spiders</a>, linking them tightly to the health of entire food webs.</p>



<p>“Ichneumonids are a very poorly known taxon in Africa - we estimate that over half of the species we found are new to science,” said doctoral researcher Emil Österman. </p>



<p>With so little baseline knowledge for tropical ichneumonids, the team used long-term, standardized sampling to see how Pimplinae diversity is distributed across Kibale’s different habitats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wasps-link-species-and-ecosystems">Wasps link species and ecosystems</h2>



<p>Because parasitoid wasps sit high in food webs, they are sensitive to disruptions below them. If the insects and spiders they rely on decline, parasitoids tend to follow. </p>



<p>That sensitivity makes Pimplinae useful indicators: shifts in their richness and abundance often mirror broader changes in biodiversity. The new work confirms what many ecologists have suspected but struggled to quantify in tropical Africa. </p>



<p>“Many of our finds weren't unexpected, but we didn't have data based on long-term collecting in the field," said Tapani Hopkins, a researcher with the Biodiversity Unit. </p>



<p>"Now we can tell in greater detail how many more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-owl-species-discovered-in-africa/">species</a> there are in natural forest, and to what extent disturbed or logged tropical forest can harbor species.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farmland-cannot-match-forest-life">Farmland cannot match forest life</h2>



<p>The headline result is encouraging for conservation: intact forest in Kibale harbors especially rich Pimplinae communities. Secondary forest that is regrowing after logging also supports far more species than adjacent farmland.</p>



<p>In other words, protecting remaining forest is essential, and letting disturbed forest recover pays real biodiversity dividends.</p>



<p>“Our results clearly show that African forest, including forest that is recovering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainforests-replanted-seedlings-after-logging-do-not-recover-well/">logging</a>, maintains a species-rich Pimplinae fauna compared to, say, nearby farmland," Österman said. "Species-rich habitats can be considered especially valuable in conserving unknown dark biodiversity.” </p>



<p>That matters for policy and on-the-ground management. If you want to safeguard the most unknown species, prioritize forests - and don’t write off recovering stands. They’re already doing important work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-forests-store-hidden-diversity">Global forests store hidden diversity</h2>



<p>The team also asked a bigger biogeographic question: how does African tropical diversity stack up against the New World? </p>



<p>Drawing on their parallel long-term collections in western Amazonia and Brazil’s coastal forests, the researchers found hints that South American rainforests may host even higher Pimplinae richness than Africa. However, African forests still harbor a rich fauna.</p>



<p>“Conserving dark taxa effectively requires a detailed knowledge of how biodiversity is distributed, both locally and at a global scale,” said Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi, who leads the Biodiversity Unit.</p>



<p>The comparison underscores a simple lesson: tropical forests on multiple continents are irreplaceable reservoirs of poorly known life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-biodiversity-loss-accelerates">Forest biodiversity loss accelerates</h2>



<p>Parasitoid wasps are only one window into dark biodiversity. But they tell a familiar story: clearing or simplifying forests causes losses to ripple upward. Protecting or allowing forests to recover lets complex communities rebound - including species we haven’t named yet.</p>



<p>The Kibale study shows <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biodiversity-leaks-conservation-efforts-may-shift-harm-elsewhere/">conservation</a> can succeed despite limited taxonomy: protect habitats that concentrate hidden diversity. It also highlights the value of patient, long-term fieldwork in places where biodiversity is vanishing fastest.</p>



<p>“We will continue our field studies at different tropical forest sites, because that is where biodiversity is disappearing especially quickly. It is a fight against time. When a rainforest is destroyed, we lose countless species which we know nothing about,” Sääksjärvi concluded.</p>

<p>Giant clams, some of the largest mollusks on Earth, have captivated marine biologists for decades. These marine giants can reach lengths of up to 4.5 feet and weigh over 700 pounds, making them key figures in tropical coral reef ecosystems. </p>



<p>Beyond the sheer size of giant clams, their biology holds secrets that researchers are still uncovering. A new study led by CU Boulder provides insight into how giant clams <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-clams-have-vanished-from-places-where-they-used-to-thrive/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolved</a> to coexist with algae inside their bodies.</p>



<p>The team sequenced the genome of Tridacna maxima, the most widespread species of giant clam. </p>



<p>The researchers discovered genetic adaptations that enable these creatures to sustain themselves through symbiosis rather than by consuming large amounts of food.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-giant-clams-grow">How giant clams grow</h2>



<p>Unlike many large marine animals, giant clams do not rely on a high-protein diet to sustain their impressive size. Instead, they derive most of their energy from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-algae-soak-up-loads-of-carbon-to-help-save-the-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algae</a> living inside their tissues. These algae harness sunlight through photosynthesis, producing nutrients that the clams absorb.</p>



<p>The recent genomic study highlights how<em>&nbsp;T. maxima</em>&nbsp;has evolved genetic mechanisms that allow it to accommodate these symbiotic algae. By examining the genetic code of&nbsp;<em>T. maxima</em>, researchers found clues about how this partnership contributed to the giant clam’s remarkable size.</p>



<p>Study senior author Jingchun Li is a professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at <a href="https://www.colorado.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CU Boulder</a>.</p>



<p>“Giant clams are keystone species in many marine habitats,” said Li. “Understanding their genetics and ecology helps us better understand the coral reef ecosystem.”</p>



<p>By comparing the genome of&nbsp;<em>T. maxima</em>&nbsp;with those of non-symbiotic mollusks, scientists identified key differences that enable the clam to support algae within its body while maintaining its own health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unique-symbiotic-relationship">Unique symbiotic relationship</h2>



<p>Popular myths often depict giant clams as dangerous creatures capable of swallowing unsuspecting divers. In reality, these mollusks are entirely non-predatory and depend entirely on their relationship with algae for survival.</p>



<p>When young giant clams drift through the ocean as larvae, they have the opportunity to ingest algae. If they take in the right species, they begin to develop a specialized internal system of tube-like structures where the algae settle and multiply. </p>



<p>These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-algae-play-an-unexpected-role-in-cooling-the-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algae</a> convert sunlight into sugars through photosynthesis, supplying essential nutrients to their host. “It’s like the algae are seeds, and a tree grows out of the clam’s stomach,” Li said.</p>



<p>This relationship benefits both organisms. While the algae provide food, the giant clams offer their symbiotic partners a safe environment within their tissues. </p>



<p>The clams regulate light exposure by expanding and retracting their mantles, ensuring that the algae receive sufficient sunlight without experiencing damage from excessive radiation. The clams also provide essential nutrients that sustain their tiny partners.</p>



<p>This process, known as photosymbiosis, is found in only a handful of marine species, such as corals. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-living-with-algae">Living with algae</h2>



<p>Many other mollusks, even those closely related to giant clams, do not form these symbiotic relationships. Scientists wanted to understand what made giant clams unique in this regard.</p>



<p>To explore this question, the research team collaborated with experts from the <a href="https://www.uog.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Guam</a> and the <a href="https://visit.museum.wa.gov.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Western Australian Museum</a>. They analyzed the genetic makeup of <em>T. maxima</em> and compared it with species such as common cockles that lack symbiotic partnerships.</p>



<p>The findings revealed that <em>T. maxima</em> possesses a greater number of genes designed to detect and distinguish beneficial algae from harmful bacteria or viruses.</p>



<p>Additionally, the researchers found that the giant clam has evolved a way to suppress parts of its immune system, allowing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-emerged-zygnema-star-algae-conquer-earths-landmass/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algae</a> to reside safely within its body for extended periods.</p>



<p>“As a result of the clam’s weakened immune system, its genome contains a large number of transposable elements, which are bits of genetic material left behind by ancient viruses,” said Ruiqi Li, the study’s first author and a postdoctoral researcher at the CU <a href="https://www.colorado.edu/resources/museum-natural-history" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Museum of Natural History</a>.</p>



<p>“These aspects highlight the tradeoffs of symbiosis. The host has to accommodate a suppressed immune system and potentially more viral genome invasions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-giant-clam-s-massive-size">The giant clam’s massive size</h2>



<p>Another major finding of the study concerned the genes responsible for regulating body size. </p>



<p>Compared to other mollusks, giant clams have fewer CTRP genes, which control body weight and growth. Scientists believe that this genetic difference may explain how giant clams are able to reach such enormous sizes.</p>



<p>By reducing the genetic restrictions on body growth, these mollusks may have evolved to expand far beyond the size of their closest relatives. Their symbiotic relationship with algae provides the necessary energy to support this growth, compensating for their lack of a high-protein diet.</p>



<p>Understanding these genetic mechanisms not only helps scientists grasp how giant clams evolved but also offers insights into broader ecological patterns. The study demonstrates how organisms can evolve specialized relationships with other species to maximize their survival in challenging environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-concerns-for-giant-clams">Conservation concerns for giant clams</h2>



<p>Last year, a giant clam population assessment led by Ruiqi Li influenced the International Union for Conservation of Nature (<a href="https://iucn.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IUCN</a>) to revise the conservation status of several giant clam species.</p>



<p><em>Tridacna gigas</em>, the largest and most iconic species, is now classified as “critically endangered,” meaning it is at extreme risk of extinction in the wild. Conservationists have long warned about the threats facing this species, from overharvesting to habitat destruction.</p>



<p>While&nbsp;<em>T. maxima</em>&nbsp;remains categorized as “least concern” due to its wide distribution, scientists caution that classification may not tell the full story. Ruiqi Li pointed out that different species are sometimes grouped together simply because they look similar, which could lead to an underestimation of conservation risks.</p>



<p>“If you think these giant clams are all the same species, you might underestimate the threat they face,” noted Ruiqi Li. “Genetic studies like this can help us distinguish between species and assess their true conservation needs.”</p>



<p>The research team aims to sequence the genomes of all 12 known giant clam species. By identifying subtle genetic differences, they hope to improve conservation strategies tailored to each species’ needs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-climate-change">Impact of climate change</h2>



<p>Beyond direct human threats, giant clams face increasing dangers from climate change. Similar to corals, these mollusks rely on their symbiotic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-algae-instead-of-meat-products-to-save-the-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algae</a> for survival. </p>



<p>When ocean temperatures rise beyond a certain threshold, the clams expel their algae, leading to a condition similar to coral bleaching. Without algae, the clams lose their primary energy source and may not survive.</p>



<p>“The giant clams are very important for the stability of the marine ecosystem and support biodiversity,” said Jingchun Li.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-giant-clams">Importance of giant clams</h2>



<p>In addition to their role as primary producers, giant clams provide shelter for numerous marine species. Their large shells create microhabitats that protect small fish and invertebrates from predators. </p>



<p>Many marine creatures also depend on giant clams as a food source, further highlighting their importance in coral reef ecosystems.</p>



<p>“Protecting them is essential for the health of coral reefs and the marine life that depends on them,” Li added.</p>



<p>As climate change and habitat destruction continue to threaten marine biodiversity, studies like this offer crucial insights into how species adapt to their environments. </p>



<p>By understanding the genetic basis of symbiosis in giant clams, scientists can contribute to conservation efforts that preserve these remarkable mollusks for future generations.</p>

<p>A new study has revealed how both recent and lifetime cannabis use can affect cognitive function. In particular, cannabis use was linked to reduced neural activity during working memory tasks.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The project - among the largest to investigate cannabis and cognition - examined more than 1,000 adults aged 22 to 36, using cutting-edge brain imaging techniques to assess the impact of cannabis on various mental processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cannabis-and-working-memory-nbsp">Cannabis and working memory&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The research team discovered that 63% of heavy lifetime <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-and-hallucinogen-use-are-at-historically-high-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a> users showed diminished brain activation in key regions while performing a working memory exercise, while 68% of recent users demonstrated a similar pattern.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pupils-enlarge-dilate-when-working-memory-engaged-focused-on-task/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Working memory</a>, a cognitive ability essential for temporarily storing and manipulating information, underpins a wide array of everyday tasks, such as following directions or solving mental calculations.</p>



<p>Joshua Gowin is the study’s first author and an assistant professor of radiology at the <a href="https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado School of Medicine</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As cannabis use continues to grow globally, studying its effects on human health has become increasingly important," Gowin explained. </p>



<p>"By doing so, we can provide a well-rounded understanding of both the benefits and risks of cannabis use, empowering people to make informed decisions and fully comprehend the potential consequences."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinguishing-cannabis-users-by-intake">Distinguishing cannabis users by intake</h2>



<p>The researchers classified study participants into three groups, based on cannabis usage history:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Heavy users: Over 1,000 total instances of cannabis use</li>



<li>Moderate users: Between 10 and 999 total uses</li>



<li>Non-users: Fewer than 10 total uses</li>
</ul>



<p>The volunteers completed seven cognitive tasks - ranging from working memory and reward assessment to emotional processing and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kids-with-too-much-screen-time-struggle-to-gain-language-skills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">language skills</a> - while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).&nbsp;</p>



<p>This approach allowed scientists to examine real-time brain activity in response to different stimuli.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-working-memory-the-most-vulnerable-function">Working memory: The most vulnerable function</h2>



<p>While many of the tasks revealed subtle cognitive differences, the most pronounced effect appeared in working memory.</p>



<p>“We applied the highest standards to our research, setting rigorous thresholds for statistical significance across all seven cognitive function tests. To minimize the risk of false positives, we employed false discovery rate (FDR) correction,” noted Gowin.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“While some of the other tasks indicated potential cognitive impairment, only the working memory task showed a statistically significant impact.”</p>



<p>Reduced working memory performance manifested in lower neural activation within regions such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC), and the anterior insula. </p>



<p>These areas are closely tied to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/optimal-decision-making-is-a-balance-of-experience-and-knowledge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decision-making</a>, problem-solving, and the integration of thoughts and emotions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cannabis-use-and-brain-function-nbsp">Cannabis use and brain function&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Notably, the researchers found that refraining from cannabis prior to cognitive testing might offer some improvement in working memory performance. </p>



<p>However, abrupt cessation could also temporarily disturb cognitive function, especially among heavy users, due to potential withdrawal symptoms.</p>



<p>“People need to be aware of their relationship with cannabis since abstaining cold turkey could disrupt their cognition as well. For example, heavy users may need to be more cautious,” said Gowin.</p>



<p>This dynamic highlights the complexity of cannabis’s impact on cognition, emphasizing that moderation or gradual reduction may be preferable for individuals wishing to protect or recover working memory capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed-nbsp">Further research is needed&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While the findings confirm a clear correlation between cannabis use and reduced working memory function, the researchers emphasize there is still much to learn about how these effects might vary across age groups, usage patterns, and individual physiology.</p>



<p>“There are a lot of questions we still need answers to regarding how cannabis impacts the brain. Large, long-term studies are needed next to understand whether cannabis use directly changes brain function, how long these effects last and the impact on different age groups,” noted Gowin.</p>



<p>Such extended research could clarify the duration of these cognitive impacts, determine whether they persist long after cessation, and identify any unique vulnerabilities among younger or older populations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-risks-and-benefits-nbsp">Understanding the risks and benefits&nbsp;</h2>



<p>As cannabis use gains broader acceptance and legalization in many regions, these findings bear considerable weight on both public health strategies and policy considerations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By highlighting potential risks to memory and daily functioning, this research serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding both the benefits and drawbacks of cannabis consumption.</p>



<p>Ultimately, knowledge gained from such studies could shape guidelines and interventions, aiding individuals and communities in making well-informed decisions about cannabis use - particularly in contexts demanding a high degree of working memory and cognitive performance.</p>

<p>Factors such as European colonization, extensive deforestation, and the extinction of large seed-dispersing animals like the giant sloth have all played a role in its decline.</p>



<p>The Brazil nut tree is also a symbol of ecological resilience, economic sustenance, and the intricate web of life within the rainforest. But now, its future is at stake as human activities are constantly shifting the ecology of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amazon-trees-are-critically-endangered-even-in-protected-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amazon</a> Basin.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genomic-data-from-brazil-nut-trees">Genomic data from Brazil nut trees</h2>



<p>A team of researchers recently embarked on a mission to investigate the genetic diversity and population dynamics of Brazil nut trees.</p>



<p>“This research provides an amazing opportunity to study how human actions, even in the distant past, have affected genetic makeup in a wild species over short time scales,” noted Detlef Weigel, an expert at the the <a href="https://www.mpg.de/151769/biology-tuebingen" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute</a> for Biology Tübingen. </p>



<p>The scientists used up-to-date genomic techniques to analyze a total of 270 Brazil nut tree samples. These samples, each with known archaeological evidence, were collected from various locations.</p>



<p>The result of this analysis was a detailed genomic data sheet that identified over 126,000 genetic variants in the Brazil nut tree's genome. The data is a treasure trove of insights into the genetic health and adaptability of the species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-diversity-of-brazil-nut-trees">Genetic diversity of Brazil nut trees</h2>



<p>The study suggests that, when compared to the diversity of other species, there has been a steep decline in the genetic diversity of Brazil nut trees over the past 20,000 years. But, it's not all gloom and doom.</p>



<p>Areas that have been managed by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indigenous-communities-provide-clues-to-healthy-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Indigenous communities</a> show more complex genetic backgrounds, revealing a deep connection between plant life and Indigenous land stewardship.</p>



<p>For example, younger trees (less than 200 years old) in the Tefé National Forest (TEF) show a greater diversity of genes. This is thanks to their adaptation to previous natural disturbances and to the management approaches of local communities that have led to genetic resilience. </p>

<p>Victor Caetano-Andrade, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Coevolution of Land Use and Urbanisation at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology, shared his insight.</p>



<p>“We aimed to bridge gaps in our understanding of the long-term anthropogenic influences on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-herbivore-extinctions-drastically-affect-forest-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forest ecosystems</a>. <p>Molecules, on the other hand, have been considered too unwieldy for such fine-tuned quantum operations.</p>

<p>However, <a href="https://www.chemistry.harvard.edu/people/kang-kuen-ni" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Kang-Kuen Ni</a> from Harvard University has now shown that these challenges can be tackled with a method that traps molecules in an ultra-cold environment.</p>

However, random vibrations and rotations complicate efforts to keep them in well-defined <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-the-universe-remains-predictable-insights-from-quantum-mechanics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum states</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-94-accuracy-in-quantum-operations">94% accuracy in quantum operations</h2>



<p>Researchers have been refining two-qubit gates for years. </p>



<p>One important gate, known as <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08177-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iSWAP</a>, swaps the states of two qubits and applies a phase shift. This combination is crucial for creating <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0402001" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">entanglement</a>, where qubits exhibit correlations that let them work in tandem.</p>



<p>By using <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2020APS..DMPG06003L/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sodium-cesium molecules</a>, the team devised a route to carry out this gate with an accuracy of 94 percent.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As a field we have been trying to do this for 20 years,” exclaimed Kang-Kuen Ni.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stabilizing-quantum-computations">Stabilizing quantum computations</h2>



<p>One strategy for taming molecules is to lower their temperature drastically. </p>



<p>This approach slows their motion so that precise laser traps, known as optical tweezers, can grab and hold them in place. </p>



<p>When the molecules remain still, the quantum states last longer, making them more reliable for calculations.</p>



<p>Those carefully arranged molecules can then be directed to interact at specific times. That control avoids unwanted collisions or jitters that would ruin <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/schrodingers-cat-put-into-silicon-chip-may-be-holy-grail-for-error-proof-quantum-computing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">superpositions</a> and reduce performance.</p>

<p>Trapped molecules have certain properties that might help push the boundaries of computing. <p>Researchers can tune not only electronic and spin states but also rotational and vibrational modes, thus opening new avenues for exploring interactions that mimic real-world molecules.</p>

<p>Realizing a 94 percent fidelity in the <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08177-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iSWAP gate</a> stands as a major checkpoint. That figure suggests enough precision to build larger quantum circuits, though refinements are likely needed before a full-scale system becomes practical. </p>



<p>Small errors can accumulate, so scientists plan to address any stray movement or minute temperature spikes that might cause <a href="https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/qm-decoherence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decoherence</a>.</p>



<p>Research also points to the potential of toggling interactions between active and inactive modes. By switching from an interacting state to a quiet, non-interacting state, scientists can pause interactions mid-computation. </p>



<p>This fine-grained control could help modularize quantum processors, making them easier to scale.</p>

<p>Southern California has been battling intense wildfires, with flames erupting across several parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. </p>



<p>The latest surge in dangerous weather is connected to the infamous <a href="https://people.atmos.ucla.edu/fovell/ASother/mm5/SantaAna/winds.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Santa Ana winds</a>, which have been sweeping in from inland deserts and fanning fires at an alarming speed. </p>



<p>At the end of last week, multiple fires flared, including a sizable one near <a href="https://www.castaiclake.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Castaic</a> that scorched thousands of acres. </p>



<p>Damage has been managed so far, thanks to water drops and strategic containment, but the combined effect of gusty conditions and near-zero humidity remains a worry.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These insights align with ongoing observations from Northeastern University climatologist <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=M7Vjq24AAAAJ&amp;hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chengfei He</a>, and from Ph.D. candidate <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/lindsaylawrencewx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lindsay Lawrence</a>, who specializes in meteorology at the same institution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-santa-ana-winds-fuel-fires">How Santa Ana winds fuel fires</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/news/earthword-katabatic-winds" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">katabatic</a> nature of these winds sets them apart from typical coastal breezes. </p>



<p>They begin inland where high pressure builds over cooler desert terrain, and then move downhill toward the coast. That downhill journey compresses and heats the air, making it even drier.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the National Weather Service (<a href="https://www.weather.gov/lox/observations_historical" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NWS</a>), humidity has hovered below 10% in several locations. This “thirsty air” robs moisture from the landscape, which contributes to tinderbox conditions.</p>



<p>It’s not just the dryness that stokes these fires. Wind speed also matters. Narrow passes and canyons in Southern California funnel these desert gusts, causing them to pick up velocity. </p>



<p>Gusts of over 60 mph (96 kmph) have been recorded in parts of Los Angeles County, which creates even more challenges for emergency crews.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-january-fires-feel-alarming">Why January fires feel alarming</h2>



<p>January in Southern California is often considered a time for rainy spells, yet the region has seen extended dryness coupled with sporadic high-pressure systems. </p>

<p>“Any new fire can grow rapidly,” posted the National Weather Service on <a href="https://x.com/usfire?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X</a>. High winds can carry embers over long distances, <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/canadas-fire-season-is-off-to-an-intense-start/">generating spot fires</a> that erupt without warning.</p>

<p>The idea of entire cities sinking beneath the waves might seem like science fiction. Yet, recent research on rising sea levels suggests that this scenario could become reality within the next 75 years.</p>



<p>A study from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore predicts that global sea levels could rise by as much as 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) by 2100 if carbon emissions continue to climb. </p>



<p>Such a drastic increase would have catastrophic consequences for coastal cities worldwide, leaving millions displaced and vast regions uninhabitable.</p>



<p>"The high-end projection of 1.9 meters [6.2 feet] underscores the need for decision-makers to plan for critical infrastructure accordingly," said Dr. Benjamin Grandey, lead author of the study.</p>



<p>"More importantly, these results emphasize the importance of climate mitigation through reducing greenhouse gas emissions," he warned.</p>



<p>If these projections come true, countless coastal towns and major cities could be submerged underwater. The impact would be felt across all continents, from the United Kingdom and Europe to the United States and beyond.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-sea-level-projections">Rising sea level projections</h2>



<p>Projections of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-warnings-what-coastal-cities-must-prepare-for/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea-level</a> rise depend on complex climate models that factor in various processes. Some projections focus on well-documented trends, such as the melting of glaciers.</p>



<p>Others incorporate less predictable events, such as the sudden collapse of ice shelves. The combination of these different elements results in a wide range of possible outcomes.</p>



<p>The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<a href="https://www.ipcc.ch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IPCC</a>) addressed this uncertainty in its 2023 Sixth Assessment Report. Under high-emission scenarios, the IPCC estimated global sea levels would rise between 1.9 and 3.2 feet (0.6 and 1.0 meters). </p>



<p>However, researchers at <a href="https://www.ntu.edu.sg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NTU</a> argue that existing models often fail to provide a clear picture. They have developed a "fusion" approach that combines statistical methods with expert opinions to refine sea level predictions.</p>



<p>"Our new approach tackles a key issue in sea-level science: different methods of projecting sea-level rise often produce widely varying results," Dr. Grandey explained. </p>



<p>By integrating multiple approaches, researchers hope to provide a more accurate estimate of what the future holds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-threat-to-the-united-kingdom">Threat to the United Kingdom</h2>



<p>If sea levels rise by 6.2 feet (1.9 meters), vast areas of the United Kingdom will be at risk.</p>



<p>London would be particularly vulnerable, with many neighborhoods along the River Thames facing severe flooding. Areas such as Bermondsey, Greenwich, Battersea, and Chelsea would likely experience catastrophic inundation.</p>



<p>The impact would extend far beyond the capital. The east coast of England is expected to suffer the most, with towns such as Hull, Skegness, and Grimsby facing complete submersion. Even inland locations, including Peterborough and Lincoln, could experience severe flooding.</p>



<p>Climate Central’s <a href="https://coastal.climatecentral.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coastal Risk Screening Tool</a> provides a detailed look at which regions will be affected. By setting the water level to 6.2 feet (1.9 meters), users can see which areas are predicted to disappear beneath rising seas. The results paint a grim picture, with entire coastal stretches marked in red.</p>



<p>The west coast of England and Wales would also feel the effects. Low-lying communities such as Weston-super-Mare, Newport, and Cardiff would be heavily impacted. Meanwhile, parts of Southport and Blackpool could also face destruction.</p>



<p>Scotland and Northern Ireland, however, appear to be less affected due to their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pacific-sea-levels-are-rising-faster-than-anywhere-in-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher elevations</a>. While some localized flooding may occur, these regions will likely escape the worst of the crisis.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-perspective-on-rising-seas">Global perspective on rising seas</h2>



<p>The threat of rising seas extends far beyond the U.K. Across Europe, heavily populated coastal areas could vanish.</p>



<p>Climate Central predicts that the entire coastline from Calais in France to southern Denmark could be submerged. The situation in Italy is equally dire, with Venice -  that is already battling frequent floods - potentially disappearing beneath the water.</p>



<p>The United States is not immune to the dangers either. Coastal cities in the southern states, including New Orleans, Galveston, and parts of the Florida Everglades, are among the most vulnerable.</p>



<p>With much of New Orleans already sitting below <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-much-will-antarctica-contribute-to-sea-level-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea level</a>, an increase of 6.2 feet would make it nearly impossible to protect.</p>



<p>Many other regions worldwide would also be at risk. Island nations in the Pacific, such as the Maldives and Tuvalu, could become totally uninhabitable. </p>



<p>Coastal megacities like Jakarta, Bangkok, and Mumbai would face relentless flooding that would threaten the homes and livelihoods of millions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-anything-be-done">Can anything be done?</h2>



<p>The findings from NTU highlight the urgent need for climate action. The continued rise in carbon dioxide emissions remains the primary driver of global warming and ice melt. Without significant reductions, future generations could witness the submersion of major cities.</p>



<p>"This NTU research represents a significant breakthrough in sea-level science. By estimating the probability of the most extreme outcomes, it underscores the severe impacts of sea-level rise on coastal communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems, emphasising the urgent need to address the climate crisis," noted Professor Benjamin Horton, Director of the Earth Observatory of Singapore at NTU.</p>



<p>Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential, but adaptation strategies must also be considered. Governments must invest in flood defenses, sustainable urban planning, and disaster preparedness. </p>



<p>Without such efforts, the world could soon face an era of climate-driven displacement on an unprecedented scale.</p>



<p>The future of coastal cities depends on immediate action. With each passing year of unchecked emissions, the likelihood of a submerged world grows more certain.</p>

<p>In the competitive world of business, we often hear that hard work, dedication, and skill are the key ingredients for career progress. But a new study has revealed an uncomfortable truth: being attractive might influence your career path more than late nights at the office.</p>



<p>Experts at the Institute for Operations Research and&nbsp;the&nbsp;Management&nbsp;Sciences (<a href="https://www.informs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">INFORMS</a>)&nbsp;in Baltimore have identified a strong connection between physical attractiveness and career success.</p>



<p>The experts analyzed the professional trajectories of over 40,000 MBA graduates and found that those who were considered more attractive earned up to 11 percent more than their "less attractive" colleagues. The findings also revealed that these individuals had a greater chance of securing prestigious job roles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-appearance-shapes-career-trajectory">Appearance shapes career trajectory </h2>



<p>Professor Nikhil Malik, who led the research, highlighted the long-term impact of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-usually-end-up-with-partners-who-look-as-attractive-as-we-are/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">appearance</a> on career growth. </p>



<p>"Appearance shapes not just the start of a career, but its trajectory over decades," he explained. "These findings reveal a persistent and compounding effect of beauty in professional settings."</p>



<p>Attractiveness is often considered a personal preference, but society tends to follow certain common beauty standards. These standards vary by culture, time period, and personal taste, but some traits are widely recognized as appealing. </p>



<p>Facial symmetry, clear skin, and well-proportioned features are frequently associated with attractiveness. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-attractive-employees-and-career-outcomes">Attractive employees and career outcomes </h2>



<p>The concept that beauty impacts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/employees-need-vacations-to-fully-disengage-from-work/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">professional success</a> is not new. </p>



<p>Many previous studies have shown that attractive individuals are often perceived as being more trustworthy, more competent as leaders, and even more intelligent. These assumptions can lead to advantages in hiring, promotions, and salary negotiations.</p>



<p>In the current study, the researchers sought to determine whether these perceptions influence long-term career outcomes. By analyzing data from more than 43,000 MBA graduates, the team used artificial intelligence to assess each participant’s attractiveness.</p>



<p>The researchers then tracked the graduates' salaries and job titles over a 15-year period to measure the impact of perceived appearance on professional success.</p>



<p>The results showed a clear pattern. Attractive graduates earned an average of 2.4 percent more than their less attractive peers, which translated to an additional $2,508 per year. The impact was even greater for the most attractive individuals. </p>



<p>Those in the top 10 percent of the attractiveness scale earned over 11 percent more, which equated to a salary increase of $5,528 annually.</p>



<p>The researchers describe this phenomenon as the "beauty premium," a consistent advantage that attractive individuals receive in professional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-love-live-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environments</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-attractive-people-have-a-better-career">Attractive people have a better career</h2>



<p>Beyond salary differences, the study revealed that good-looking professionals were more likely to hold high-ranking positions within their industries. </p>



<p>Fifteen years after graduation, attractive individuals were 52.4 percent more likely to have secured prestigious job roles compared to their less attractive peers.</p>



<p>However, the researchers found that the benefits of attractiveness varied significantly depending on the industry. Some fields placed a greater emphasis on social interaction, which amplified the effects of the beauty premium.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-professionals-in-various-fields">Professionals in various fields</h2>



<p>Management and consulting industries, where client relationships and networking play a major role, demonstrated the highest correlation between attractiveness and career success. </p>



<p>Professionals in these fields benefited the most from the beauty premium, with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dating-apps-make-it-difficult-to-find-true-love/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">attractive individuals</a> climbing the corporate ladder faster and securing leadership roles at a higher rate.</p>



<p>In contrast, industries that rely heavily on technical skills, such as IT and engineering, showed the lowest correlation between attractiveness and career success. In these fields, expertise and knowledge appeared to outweigh physical appearance in determining career progression.</p>



<p>"This research highlights how biases tied to physical appearance persist in shaping career outcomes, even for highly educated professionals," noted Professor Param Vir Singh, a co-author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-trust">The role of trust </h2>



<p>While the study did not explore the specific reasons behind the beauty premium, some experts believe trust plays a key role in attractive individuals' career success.</p>



<p>Astrid Hopfensitz, a professor in organizational behavior at <a href="https://em-lyon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EM&nbsp;Lyon&nbsp;Business&nbsp;School</a>, who was not involved in the study, provided insights into the psychological mechanisms that might explain these findings.</p>



<p>"It is thought individuals perceived as beautiful are also more likely to benefit from people's trust, which makes it easier for them to get promoted or to strike business deals," she explained.</p>



<p>Professor Hopfensitz further suggested that attractive individuals might be seen as healthier and as having had more positive social interactions in their past. These factors could contribute to their perceived trustworthiness, making others more willing to invest in their success.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-employers-must-address-beauty-bias">Employers must address beauty bias</h2>



<p>The findings of this study highlight the influence of unconscious biases on career progression.</p>



<p>While qualifications, experience, and dedication should be the primary factors in professional advancement, the research suggests that physical appearance can still shape career outcomes in significant ways.</p>



<p>Organizations and employers must acknowledge these biases and work towards fairer hiring and promotion practices. </p>



<p>Implementing structured evaluation criteria, increasing awareness of unconscious biases, and ensuring transparency in decision-making processes could help mitigate the effects of the beauty premium.</p>



<p>The workplace should be a space where skills and expertise determine success rather than physical attributes. Recognizing and addressing these hidden biases can lead to a more equitable professional environment that allows individuals to progress based on their abilities rather than their looks.</p>

<p>Over the past four decades, the rate at which global oceans absorb heat has surged dramatically. A recent study reveals that ocean warming rates have quadrupled since the late 1980s. </p>



<p>During that earlier period, temperatures rose by roughly 0.06°C (0.11°F) per decade. Today, that rate has jumped to 0.27°C (0.49°F) per decade.</p>



<p>This acceleration offers a clear explanation for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-ocean-warming-in-2024-is-a-warning-for-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unprecedented ocean heat</a> observed in 2023 and early 2024, when global sea surface temperatures broke records for 450 consecutive days.</p>



<p>Professor Chris Merchant, lead author of the study and a researcher at the <a href="https://research.reading.ac.uk/meteorology/people/christopher-merchant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Reading</a>, likens the trend to a bathtub filling with hot water.</p>



<p>“In the 1980s, the hot tap was running slowly, warming up the water by just a fraction of a degree each decade. But now the hot tap is running much faster, and the warming has picked up speed,” Professor Merchant noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-energy-imbalance">Earth’s energy imbalance</h2>



<p>The rapid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-warming-is-subtly-changing-the-tides/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heating of the oceans</a> is tied to Earth’s growing energy imbalance. This imbalance occurs when more solar energy is absorbed by the planet than is radiated back into space. </p>



<p>Since 2010, this disparity has nearly doubled, driven by rising greenhouse gas concentrations and a decline in Earth’s ability to reflect sunlight. Factors such as melting polar ice and shifts in cloud cover have reduced the planet’s reflectivity, trapping additional heat in the climate system.</p>



<p>Oceans act as Earth’s primary heat sink, absorbing over 90% of this excess energy. The study highlights that 44% of the record-breaking ocean temperatures during the recent El Niño event - a natural climate phenomenon that warms the Pacific - can be attributed to this accelerated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-deja-vu-oceans-may-slow-down-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat absorption</a>.</p>



<p>Even when compared to the strong El Niño of 2015–2016, the 2023–2024 event stood out due to the oceans’ faster warming trend over the past decade.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-influences-on-ocean-warming">Influences on ocean warming</h2>



<p>While natural climate cycles like El Niño contribute to short-term temperature spikes, the study emphasizes that human activities are amplifying their effects. </p>



<p>The 2023–2024 El Niño occurred against a backdrop of oceans already primed to absorb heat at unprecedented rates. The researchers found that sea surfaces have warmed so rapidly in recent years that even moderate natural variability now leads to extreme temperature records.</p>



<p>This synergy between human-driven warming and natural cycles has cascading impacts. Warmer oceans intensify hurricanes, disrupt rainfall patterns, and accelerate ice melt. </p>



<p>For example, the 2024 California wildfire season was exacerbated by abnormally high ocean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-at-risk-global-warming-threatens-the-oceans-lifeline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperatures</a>, which altered atmospheric moisture and wind patterns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-accelerated-warming">Future of accelerated warming</h2>



<p>One of the study’s most striking conclusions is that the total ocean warming observed over the past 40 years could be matched - or surpassed - within the next 20 years.</p>



<p>Surface ocean temperatures, which play a critical role in regulating global climate, are rising at a pace that could push Earth toward irreversible tipping points. These include the collapse of ice sheets, the shutdown of ocean currents, and the dieback of vital ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest.</p>



<p>Temporary breaches of the 1.5°C (2.7°F) global warming threshold, such as those recorded in 2024, may soon become permanent without urgent action.</p>



<p>The UK Met Office notes that each fraction of a degree avoided could prevent catastrophic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-sediments-predict-the-impacts-of-ocean-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">outcomes</a> for ecosystems and human societies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-warming-s-threat-to-marine-ecosystems">Ocean warming's threat to marine ecosystems</h2>



<p>The consequences of ocean warming extend far beyond temperature records. Coral reefs, which support 25% of marine species, are experiencing mass bleaching events at an unprecedented scale. </p>



<p>Warmer waters disrupt fish migration patterns, threatening global fisheries and food security. Species unable to adapt or relocate face extinction, while invasive organisms thrive in altered conditions.</p>



<p>Coastal communities are also at risk. Rising sea levels, driven by thermal expansion and ice melt, threaten low-lying regions. Saltwater intrusion into freshwater systems further strains resources for millions of people.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closing-the-hot-tap">Closing the “hot tap”</h2>



<p>Professor Merchant stresses that slowing ocean warming requires “closing the hot tap” by rapidly reducing carbon emissions. </p>



<p>Transitioning to renewable energy, protecting carbon-absorbing ecosystems like mangroves and peatlands, and adopting sustainable land-use practices are critical steps. Governments must prioritize policies that phase out fossil fuels and incentivize green technologies.</p>



<p>Individual actions also play a role. Reducing meat consumption, minimizing energy waste, and supporting climate-conscious policies can collectively drive systemic change. </p>



<p>The study warns that delaying action will escalate costs - both economic and ecological - as climate disasters grow more frequent and severe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-ocean-warming">Consequences of ocean warming</h2>



<p>Failing to curb emissions may lead to irreversible damage. The financial toll of climate disasters, from rebuilding after hurricanes to relocating displaced communities, could reach trillions of dollars annually by mid-century.</p>



<p>In contrast, investments in renewable energy and climate resilience offer long-term savings and job creation.</p>



<p>“Not doing it is more expensive,” said Merchant, pointing to the growing gap between current efforts and what is needed to stabilize the climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-race-against-time">A race against time</h2>



<p>The study’s findings are a stark reminder that ocean warming is not a distant threat but an immediate crisis. Every year of delayed action allows the “hot tap” to run faster, compounding risks for future generations.</p>



<p>“The difference between 1.5°C and 2°C of warming could determine the survival of entire ecosystems,” noted Professor Rowan Sutton of the <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a>’s Hadley Centre. The window to avert the worst impacts is narrowing, but it remains open - if societies act decisively.</p>

<p>In 2016, a quiet galaxy in the constellation Draco caught scientists’ attention with subtle flickers that hinted at unusual activity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Today, in a 2025 follow-up <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/ad8651" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>, astronomers have confirmed something astonishing: the presence of a <a href="https://astronomy.swin.edu.au/cosmos/*/Supermassive+Black+Hole" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supermas</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/many-supermassive-black-holes-are-hidden-by-gas-and-dust/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">s</a><a href="https://astronomy.swin.edu.au/cosmos/*/Supermassive+Black+Hole" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ive black hole</a> blasting out twin jets at nearly one-third of the speed of light.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quiet-galaxy-sparks-new-interest">Quiet galaxy sparks new interest</h2>



<p>The galaxy, designated <a href="https://www.aanda.org/articles/aa/abs/2003/02/aah3775/aah3775.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1ES 1927+654</a>, sits about 270 million light-years away in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/cats-eye-nebula-in-the-constellation-draco/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Draco constellation</a>. It houses a central black hole estimated to be around 1.4 million times the mass of our Sun.</p>



<p>This cosmic powerhouse had seemed relatively subdued until multiple space- and ground-based telescopes picked up some dramatic changes.</p>



<p>Researchers noticed months-long boosts in X-ray emissions and, soon after this, powerful radio signals indicated a sudden outburst.</p>



<p><a href="https://physics.umbc.edu/people/faculty/meyer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eileen Meyer</a>, from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, led a team that <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/universe/black-holes/supermassive-black-holes/astronomers-catch-unprecedented-features-at-brink-of-active-black-hole/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">captured the radio flare</a> with high-resolution observations. </p>



<p>They found what appear to be opposing jets of <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/ionized-gas" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ionized gas</a> that extended roughly half a light-year in total distance.</p>



<p>“The launch of a black hole jet has never been observed before in real time,” said Meyer at the <a href="https://aas.org/meetings/aas245" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">245th meeting</a> of the American Astronomical Society (<a href="https://aas.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AAS</a>) in National Harbor, Maryland. </p>



<p>Data suggest these jets emerged when X-ray activity started increasing, but thick layers of hot gas likely shielded them from view until they finally broke free last year.</p>

<p>A separate team <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.01581" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studied</a> unexplained X-ray pulses, or <a href="https://www.uni-kassel.de/maschinenbau/en/institute/mechanik/fachgebiete/engineering-dynamics/research/quasi-periodic-oscillations" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quasiperiodic oscillations</a>, that raced up and down in brightness by about ten percent every few minutes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“One way to produce these oscillations is with an object orbiting within the black hole’s accretion disk,” said <a href="https://www.space.mit.edu/people/megan-masterson/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Megan Masterson</a>, a doctoral candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href="https://www.mit.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MIT</a>).</p>

<p>The team found that these flares sped up from an 18-minute to a 7-minute cycle. They suspect an orbiting body may have been spiraling closer to the black hole, only to settle into a stable path once it had lost some of its own matter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-view-of-a-bright-radio-flare">New view of a bright radio flare</h2>



<p>Radio data revealed a flare about 60 times more intense than earlier readings, according to <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/ad8651" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a>. That flare accompanied the birth of what looks like a pair of jets that travel outward in opposite directions.</p>



<p>Researchers often see twin jets shooting from supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-of-massive-early-universe-black-hole-stuns-astronomers/">black holes</a>, but it is rare to spot the moment that they erupt.</p>



<p>Astronomers think that matter swirling around the black hole sometimes gets channeled by strong magnetic fields, and then builds up pressure until bursts of fast-moving plasma escape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-white-dwarf-near-the-event-horizon">White dwarf near the event horizon?</h2>



<p>Many objects would be torn apart too quickly to create the repeated short timescale <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/x-ray-radiation-from-black-holes-explained-after-50-year-struggle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X-ray signals</a> at 1ES 1927+654. The best candidate for a resilient companion is a <a href="https://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/objects/dwarfs2.html#:~:text=A%20white%20dwarf%20is%20what,material%2C%20creating%20a%20planetary%20nebula." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">white dwarf</a> - a stellar remnant about the size of Earth.</p>

<p>According to <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2501.02340">research</a> led by <a href="https://science.gsfc.nasa.gov/sci/bio/sibasish.laha" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sibasish Laha</a> at UMBC and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, a white dwarf could gradually lose matter as the black hole’s immense gravity pulls it inward.</p>



<p>That slow leak of material might counteract the energy loss from gravitational waves, allowing the dwarf to maintain a (relatively) steady orbit in this violent neighborhood.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-black-hole-jets">Observing black hole jets</h2>



<p>If there is indeed a white dwarf locked in such a dance, it may be producing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-particles-solution-gravitational-wave-mystery-bose-einstein-condensate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational waves</a> that ripple out through space.</p>



<p>An upcoming mission called <a href="https://lisa.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LISA</a> (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) could potentially detect these signals, giving scientists another tool to study what happens near a supermassive black hole.</p>



<p>Researchers also hope to track the jets’ growth using advanced radio arrays capable of pinpointing shifting structures that are less than a light-year across.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-are-black-hole-jets-important">Why are black hole jets important?</h2>



<p>Scientists are still working out why some black holes generate powerful jets while others remain radio-quiet. The flare at 1ES 1927+654 suggests that even black holes with lower masses can create jets if conditions are right.</p>



<p>Observers also wonder whether the jets will persist or fade back into obscurity. Regardless, this galaxy has emerged as a unique target that may clarify how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/colossal-black-hole-found-in-our-galaxy-is-33-times-the-suns-mass/">black holes</a> shape their surroundings through bursts of high-speed outflows.</p>



<p>This new study shows that a once-silent black hole can transform in surprising ways. </p>



<p>Researchers will continue gathering data from space-based X-ray telescopes and radio observatories on Earth, looking for more clues about what triggers these explosive events.</p>



<p>By comparing ongoing measurements with earlier records, astronomers hope to piece together how matter near a black hole either falls in or jets out into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-galactic-explosion-provides-clues-about-galaxy-evolution/">intergalactic space</a>. </p>



<p>The discoveries at 1ES 1927+654 underline the fact that black holes, even if quiet for centuries, can abruptly shift their behavior.</p>

<p>A new study led by geologists and geographers from the University of Florida provides new insights into Antarctic ice shelves and how they respond to climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While warming temperatures are clearly driving a widespread loss of ice shelves, the study reveals that major iceberg calving events have not significantly increased in frequency or size.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Instead, smaller, more frequent calving events, which the authors describe as “death by a thousand cuts,” appear to be the main culprits in Antarctic ice shelf decline.</p>



<p>The findings have been published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2024GL112235" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Geophysical Research Letters</em></a>, and the research team was led by assistant professor of geological sciences Emma MacKie and assistant professor of geography Katy Serafin (both from the <a href="https://www.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Florida</a>), along with a collaborator from the <a href="https://www.mines.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado School of Mines</a>.</p>



<p>“Our results suggest that the primary threat to our ice shelves is ‘death by a thousand cuts’ via small calving events, rather than catastrophic extremes,” MacKie said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-temperatures-and-antarctic-ice-shelves-nbsp">Rising temperatures and Antarctic ice shelves&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Calving refers to the process by which chunks of ice detach from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-melting-ice-shelves-threaten-global-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelves</a> to form icebergs. While this process has long been known to occur naturally, the role of climate change in speeding it up has attracted increasing scientific attention.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The most striking aspect of this new study is its finding that extreme, large-scale iceberg break-offs - although they capture headlines - are not happening more frequently or growing in magnitude due to global warming.</p>



<p>Throughout their survey, the researchers primarily observed a broad retreat of ice shelves associated with rising temperatures. However, these large calving events - where an iceberg exceeds 100 square kilometers - remain relatively rare.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-calving-events-are-rare">Large calving events are rare</h2>



<p>The team delved into 47 years’ worth of satellite data, spanning 1976 to 2023, to uncover patterns in the frequency and size of large calving events. Despite this extensive timeframe, major calving events still numbered too few for standard statistical methods to paint a clear picture.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To address this, the team turned to extreme value theory, a statistical approach commonly used to study rare natural disasters like major floods or earthquakes.</p>



<p>Katy Serafin - an expert on extreme flooding - applied these established methods to the ice shelf data. “Statistical models relating event size and frequency are tools that have been used for estimating rare flood events, like a 100-year flood, for decades,” she explained.</p>



<p>“Now that satellite imagery can more consistently track large calving events, we thought we’d test whether we could apply the same tools for understanding how likely these massive calving events are.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-giant-icebergs-are-not-increasing">Giant icebergs are not increasing</h2>



<p>By applying extreme value theory to the available data, the researchers calculated the likelihood and potential size of large calving events.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They estimated that a once-in-a-decade iceberg could be around 6,100 square kilometers, comparable to a giant iceberg that broke off in 2017 (roughly the size of Delaware), while a once-in-a-century iceberg could measure as much as 45,000 square kilometers, an area larger than Denmark.</p>



<p>“A once in a century <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-largest-icebergs-are-not-linked-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iceberg</a> would be several times larger than any in the observational record and would have a significant impact on ice-sheet stability and ocean processes,” said MacKie.</p>



<p>Despite these theoretical extremes, the researchers found no upward trend in the frequency or size of these major events over the last five decades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Interestingly, the largest icebergs observed appeared between 1986 and 2000, suggesting that these rare break-offs are not directly tied to rising temperatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-real-threat-small-calving-events">The real threat: Small calving events</h2>



<p>While dramatic, large icebergs do not seem to be increasing in tandem with climate change, smaller, more frequent calving events appear to be gradually eroding Antarctica’s ice shelves. </p>



<p>The cumulative impact of these numerous small break-offs seems to be the main driver of ice shelf loss over the past 50 years.</p>



<p>This ongoing reduction in ice shelves - amplified by warmer conditions - poses long-term concerns for ice sheet stability and global sea levels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-models-and-sea-level-rise">Climate models and sea level rise</h2>



<p>The study’s findings carry significant consequences for climate modeling and predictions of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-sea-levels-spiked-dramatically-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea level rise</a>. </p>



<p>Contrary to public perceptions focusing on massive icebergs breaking away, the slow, continuous loss of ice could represent the more serious danger to polar regions.</p>



<p>Understanding these smaller, frequent calving events can help scientists improve models that forecast the future of ice shelves and enable policymakers to formulate more precise strategies for addressing the ramifications of ice melt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamics-of-antarctic-ice-shelves">Dynamics of Antarctic ice shelves</h2>



<p>By revealing that large calving events are not growing in size or frequency, the study comes up with a new narrative on how Antarctic ice shelves are declining.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The emphasis shifts to the accumulative toll of small-scale calving. This highlights the value of long-term observational data and specialized statistical methods, such as extreme value theory, for discerning broader patterns in rarely observed phenomena.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the results warn that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-surge-in-global-warming-may-have-an-unexpected-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rapid warming</a>, while not accelerating catastrophic iceberg release, is facilitating a steady thinning of ice shelves - a trend that remains a serious concern for Antarctica’s stability and the worldwide consequences of sea level rise.</p>

<p>In addition, it is important that humans do not introduce microbes into space as a result of their activities.</p>



<p>The new <a href="https://ntrs.nasa.gov/api/citations/20230000435/downloads/Bell%20IEM%20EVA%20LPSC%202023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ISS External Microorganisms</a> experiment lays the groundwork for a scientific expedition to sample areas of the ISS and determine whether microbes are present and, if so, how many of them there are.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-invisible-microbes-in-space">Invisible microbes in space</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronauts-microbiome-health-is-crucial-to-future-space-exploration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Astronauts</a> are set to embark on spacewalks to collect samples near the life support system vents on the outside of the International Space Station in hopes of finding living microbes.</p>



<p>This location choice is driven by the curiosity to see whether the spacecraft might be emitting microorganisms into the cosmos and, if so, the nature and number of these microorganisms and the distance they may travel.</p>

<p>How do these tiny life forms manage to survive and propagate in the hostile environment of space? Astronauts will search the exterior of the space station for living microbes

Sometimes, the most fascinating discoveries are not in the stars...

<p>For decades, scientists have studied the moon’s surface to uncover its complex geological and evolutionary history. Evidence from the lunar maria - dark, flat areas filled with solidified lava - suggested that the moon experienced significant compression billions of years ago. </p>



<p>Large, arching ridges on the moon’s near side were thought to be remnants of this ancient contraction, leading researchers to believe that the lunar maria had remained dormant ever since. However, a recent study published in&nbsp;<em>The Planetary Science Journal</em> challenges this long-held assumption.</p>



<p>Researchers at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.si.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smithsonian Institution</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;University of Maryland&nbsp;have discovered that the moon’s far side tells a different story - one of recent geological activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-young-ridges-on-the-moon-s-far-side">Young ridges on the moon’s far side</h2>



<p>The study was led by Jaclyn Clark, an assistant research scientist in the University of Maryland’s Department of Geology. The findings reveal that small ridges on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-plans-to-build-a-moon-base-using-3d-printing-and-robots/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a>’s far side are significantly younger than those on the near side.</p>



<p>“Many scientists believe that most of the moon’s geological movements happened two and a half, maybe three billion years ago,” Clark said. </p>



<p>“But we're seeing that these tectonic landforms have been recently active in the last billion years and may still be active today. These small mare ridges seem to have formed within the last 200 million years or so, which is relatively recent considering the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moons-entire-surface-is-covered-with-water-and-hydroxyl-not-just-the-poles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a>’s timescale.”</p>



<p>Using advanced mapping and modeling techniques, the team identified 266 previously unknown small ridges on the moon’s far side. These ridges often appeared in groups of 10 to 40 within volcanic regions that likely formed 3.2 to 3.6 billion years ago. </p>



<p>The researchers suggest that these areas may have underlying weaknesses in the moon’s surface, making them more susceptible to tectonic activity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crater-counting-window-into-lunar-history">Crater counting: Window into lunar history</h2>



<p>To estimate the age of these ridges, the team employed a technique called crater counting. </p>



<p>“Essentially, the more craters a surface has, the older it is; the surface has more time to accumulate more craters,” Clark explained. </p>



<p>By analyzing the number of craters around the ridges, the researchers found that some ridges cut through existing impact craters, indicating they were tectonically active within the last 160 million years.</p>



<p>This discovery challenges the notion that the moon’s geological activity ceased billions of years ago. Instead, it suggests that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-magma-ocean-molten-rock-found-moons-surface-south-pole-chandrayaan-3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a>’s interior may still be dynamic, with forces like the moon’s gradual shrinking and shifts in its orbit contributing to ongoing tectonic processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forces-that-created-the-moon-ridges">Forces that created the moon ridges </h2>



<p>Interestingly, the ridges on the moon’s far side share structural similarities with those on the near side. This suggests that both sets of ridges were created by the same forces, likely a combination of the moon’s gradual shrinking and changes in its orbit. </p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. <p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The science behind it</strong></h2>



<p>Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.</p>



<p>While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.</p>

Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
