<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>

<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>

<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<p>NASA Administrator Bill Nelson presented a revised scenario last Tuesday. He will soon step down as NASA's chief ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.</p>



<p>Nelson said he "pulled the plug" on the original sample return plan due to the soaring costs and the delay in getting anything back from Mars before 2040.</p>



<p>Last year, NASA requested ideas for better options to ensure that the cigar-sized tubes of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-samples-from-mars-could-reveal-fascinating-secrets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">samples</a> collected by NASA's Perseverance rover arrive on Earth in the 2030s. This new timeline aligns well with the anticipated launch of astronauts to the Red Planet.</p>



<p>"We have a goal to return 30 titanium tubes as soon as possible at the lowest possible cost," stated Nelson.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-charting-a-new-course">Charting a new course </h2>



<p>NASA has zeroed in on two potential paths that would keep expenses in the $6 to $7 billion range. This cost not only seems more manageable but also includes exciting designs by commercial partners.</p>



<p>Without changing the number of spacecraft or launches, NASA believes the proposed sample return paths could make the mission more efficient. The final decision is slated for next year, after detailed engineering studies have gauged the positives and negatives of each alternative.</p>

<p>Perseverance has been a key player in NASA's high-priority search for signs of ancient, microscopic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-search-for-signs-of-life-on-mars-continues/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian life</a>. Since its arrival in 2021, it has collected more than two dozen samples. </p>



<p>These samples from the long-dry river delta of Mars are expected to yield significant results once they are brought back and analyzed in Earth-based labs.</p>



<p>NASA officials have stated that both options would simplify the process by cleaning the sample tubes on Mars' surface, instead of in the returning spacecraft. There is also a plan to switch from solar to nuclear power to withstand Mars' infamous dust storms.</p>



<p>Nelson said it will be up to the incoming administration to decide how best to retrieve the Mars samples, with the need for money to start flowing now to accomplish it. For Nelson's replacement, Trump has nominated tech billionaire Jared Isaacman, who recently led the first all-civilian mission to space. </p>



<p>"What we wanted to do was to give them the best possible options so that they can go from here," Nelson said.</p>

<p>The study was focused on videos featuring popular hashtags linked to opioid safety messages. The researchers narrowed their search to a time when opioid fatalities were climbing, and more people were scrolling through social media. </p>



<p>The findings highlight TikTok’s potential for quick, high-impact communication about overdose prevention, addiction support, and news on treatment options.</p>

<p>The researchers found that the most consistent topic across the videos was education about opioid risks, Narcan access, and the reality of recovery. </p>

<p>“There was a strong ‘collective voice’ among the harm reduction creators that is ‘de-stigmatizing opioid harm reduction and sharing resources and information helpful to others,’” noted the researchers.</p>



<p>Similar trends emerged in a separate scholarly investigation that focused on the top opioid-related content under the #opioids hashtag, demonstrating that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-up-in-a-digital-world-tiktok-makes-teenagers-happy/">TikTok</a> discussions often revolve around safe medication practices, overdose risks, and pain management.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Across these studies, the short-video format proved to be an unexpected stage for candid personal stories and urgent calls to action.</p>

<p>Galaxies come in many shapes and sizes, from massive spiral galaxies like the Milky Way to tiny, faint dwarf galaxies. While larger galaxies often steal the spotlight, small galaxies can also provide crucial insights into the history of the universe.</p>



<p>Researchers led by Kristen McQuinn of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) have used the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to investigate Leo P, an isolated dwarf galaxy located 5.3 million light-years from Earth.</p>



<p>Their study has revealed surprising patterns in star formation that could reshape our understanding of how galaxies evolve over cosmic time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leo-p-a-galactic-time-capsule">Leo P: A galactic time capsule</h2>



<p>Leo P is unique among dwarf <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spiral-galaxy-with-quasar-jet-surprises-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a>. Unlike many of its counterparts, it sits relatively isolated, away from the gravitational influence of larger galaxies like the Milky Way and Andromeda. This makes it a pristine laboratory for studying galaxy evolution without the complications of external interference.</p>



<p>The “P” in Leo P stands for “pristine,” a reference to its low metal content. In astronomy, "metals" refer to elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, which are produced by stars over time.</p>



<p>Leo P contains just&nbsp;3% of the Sun’s heavy elements, making it&nbsp;one of the most metal-poor galaxies known. This means Leo P resembles&nbsp;some of the earliest galaxies that formed in the universe, offering a rare glimpse into what galaxies looked like billions of years ago.</p>



<p>“Leo P provides a unique laboratory to explore the early evolution of a low-mass galaxy in detail,” said McQuinn, who also leads the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/roman" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope</a>’s Science Operations Center.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-start-stop-history-of-star-formation">A start-stop history of star formation</h2>



<p>Astronomers have long studied&nbsp;how and when small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-are-much-bigger-than-we-originally-believed-gas-clouds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> form stars. </p>



<p>In most cases, dwarf galaxies begin forming stars early in their history. However, many of them stop producing stars after a few billion years - often permanently. The new observations of Leo P challenge that assumption.</p>



<p>Using&nbsp;JWST’s Near-Infrared Camera (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/nircam/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NIRCam</a>), McQuinn’s team measured the&nbsp;brightness and colors of thousands of individual stars in Leo P. This data allowed them to reconstruct the&nbsp;star formation history&nbsp;of the galaxy in great detail.</p>



<p>They discovered that Leo P formed stars early in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universe-is-expanding-faster-than-science-can-explain-hubble-tension-physics-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic history</a> but then&nbsp;abruptly stopped forming new stars shortly after a period known as the Epoch of Reionization. </p>



<p>This was a key phase in the early universe when radiation from the first galaxies ionized the remaining neutral hydrogen gas, ending the universe’s “dark ages.” Many small galaxies&nbsp;lost their ability to form stars during this period and never recovered.</p>



<p>But Leo P was different. After a long dormancy, the galaxy reignited its star formation billions of years later - something rarely seen in other dwarf galaxies.</p>



<p>“We have a measurement like this for only three other galaxies that are all isolated from the Milky Way, and they all show a similar pattern,”&nbsp;McQuinn explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-leo-p-different">What makes Leo P different? </h2>



<p>This discovery challenges long-held assumptions about why some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/andromeda-galaxy-the-violent-history-of-our-closest-cosmic-neighbor/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> stop forming stars while others continue. </p>



<p>For years, astronomers believed that a galaxy’s&nbsp;mass&nbsp;played the biggest role in whether it could sustain star formation.&nbsp;Smaller galaxies were thought to be more vulnerable to cosmic events like reionization, which stripped them of their gas and halted star formation.</p>



<p>However, Leo P tells a different story. The team compared its history with that of dwarf galaxies within the Local Group, the collection of galaxies that includes the Milky Way. Many of these galaxies ceased forming stars after the Epoch of Reionization - and never started again.</p>



<p>The difference?&nbsp;Leo P and the three other galaxies that restarted star formation are isolated, while the ones that remained dormant are&nbsp;satellite galaxies orbiting larger galaxies like the Milky Way.</p>



<p>This suggests that a galaxy’s environment, rather than just its mass, plays a crucial role in its ability to form stars over time.&nbsp;Galaxies that remain isolated may have a better chance of recovering and forming stars again, while those near large galaxies may lose their gas permanently.</p>



<p>“If the trend holds, it provides insights about the growth of low-mass structures that are not only a fundamental constraint for structure formation but a benchmark for cosmological simulations,” noted McQuinn.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-window-into-the-early-universe">A window into the early universe</h2>



<p>Another key finding from the study is that&nbsp;Leo P’s extremely low metal content makes it one of the closest analogs to the earliest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-galaxy-shows-us-what-the-early-milky-way-looked-like/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> in the universe. The first galaxies to form after the Big Bang were extremely metal-poor, composed mainly of&nbsp;hydrogen and helium. </p>



<p>Studying galaxies like Leo P helps astronomers understand&nbsp;how those first galaxies evolved and produced the heavy elements that make up stars, planets, and even life itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-next-expanding-the-study">What’s next? Expanding the study</h2>



<p>Leo P is just one piece of a much larger cosmic puzzle. To confirm whether its unusual star formation history is part of a broader pattern, McQuinn’s team plans to&nbsp;study four more isolated, star-forming dwarf galaxies&nbsp;using JWST. </p>



<p>If they find similar trends, it could mean that&nbsp;many more galaxies in the early universe experienced multiple bursts of star formation instead of a single continuous phase.</p>



<p>These findings also have implications for&nbsp;cosmological simulations, which attempt to model how galaxies form and evolve over billions of years. If small galaxies like Leo P can reignite their star formation after long dormancies, then existing models may need to be revised to reflect this possibility.</p>

<p>Cuttlefish, small marine animals that are masters of disguise, have left researchers wide-eyed by demonstrating high levels of self-control and an innate ability to wait, think, and make smart decisions. </p>



<p>These highly-intelligent relatives of octopuses and squids have shown they’re capable of pausing for better rewards at a later point in time. </p>



<p>It’s the same idea behind a popular test originally given to kids to see if they could wait for a bigger treat. Instead of marshmallows, though, these sea critters wait for shrimp.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ability-of-cuttlefish-to-wait">Ability of cuttlefish to wait</h2>



<p>The findings come from a <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2020.3161" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> where scientists adapted <a href="https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/news/marshmallow-test-revisited" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the famous marshmallow test</a> to measure whether cuttlefish would pass on a snack if it meant enjoying tastier food later.</p>



<p>After it was confirmed they could hold out for something better, the team took things a step further. They checked if the same animals that showed self-control would also do well on a learning task. They did.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This is according to behavioral ecologist Alexandra Schnell from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> in the UK, whose team first confirmed that cuttlefish could hold back their impulses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peeking-inside-clever-minds">Peeking inside clever minds</h2>



<p>Cuttlefish belong to a group of animals known for surprising feats. Certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopuses-could-dominate-earth-if-humans-vanish/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">octopuses</a> have been filmed using coconut shells as portable hideouts.</p>



<p>Some squids communicate with patterns on their bodies. But these findings raised a question for Dr. Schnell’s team: do cuttlefish also show <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cuttlefish-camouflage-is-much-more-complex-and-mind-boggling-than-initially-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">problem-solving skills</a> that appear in large-brained animals like crows and chimpanzees? </p>



<p>One <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2020.3161" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">experiment</a> put that question to the test by letting the cuttlefish choose between a snack they could get right away or an even better snack if they waited. As soon as they picked the immediate option, the better meal disappeared.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-cuttlefish-waiting-matters">Why cuttlefish waiting matters </h2>



<p>When kids take part in a marshmallow test, they might look around nervously or cover their eyes so they don’t eat the treat too soon. In dogs, a similar ability to delay reward has been <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/srep42459" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studied</a> using treat tests.</p>



<p>While most of our beloved pets struggle to resist, some can wait longer than others. This skill often suggests a capacity for planning ahead. </p>



<p>Cuttlefish, though, have never been known to rely on food storing or shared group behavior that might explain why they’d stand to benefit from waiting. So, a patient cuttlefish is a bit of a head-scratcher.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-food-to-camouflage">From food to camouflage</h2>



<p>The study was carried out in collaboration with senior scientist <a href="https://www.mbl.edu/research/faculty-and-whitman-scientists/Roger%20Hanlon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roger Hanlon</a> at the Marine Biological Laboratory (<a href="https://www.mbl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MBL</a>). One theory for this behavior points to the cuttlefish’s defensive strategies. </p>



<p>They spend a lot of time blending in with their surroundings to avoid being eaten. That means they can’t just dart around all day in search of nibbles. </p>



<p>In many cases, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cuttlefish-form-false-memories-events-similar-human-brains/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ability to hold out</a> might help cuttlefish wait for better prey, rather than risk revealing themselves for something mediocre. </p>



<p>“Cuttlefish in the present study were all able to wait for the better reward and tolerated delays for up to 50-130 seconds, which is comparable to what we see in large-brained vertebrates such as chimpanzees, crows, and parrots,” said Dr. Schnell. </p>



<p>A team of six cuttlefish proved they could hang back for up to about 130 seconds, which is roughly two minutes.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cuttlefish-wait-and-adapt-quickly">Cuttlefish wait and adapt quickly</h2>



<p>Cuttlefish aren’t known to be social, nor do they spend time carrying objects to build complex traps. But <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-cuttlefish-instantly-change-their-skin-color-based-on-what-they-see-and-feel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">they do learn quickly</a>.</p>



<p>To measure that, the team placed two distinct shapes in the tank. One symbol signaled a reward if they touched it. </p>



<p>Later, the scientists switched the meaning. The cuttlefish had to figure out that the “correct” shape now meant something else entirely. </p>



<p>This is called a reversal-learning task, and it often trips up animals that rely on routine. Oddly enough, the cuttlefish that were better at waiting for a shrimp snack also learned this shape-swapping game in fewer tries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-memories-that-stay-sharp">Memories that stay sharp</h2>



<p>Longer <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0038125" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> on cuttlefish hint they may also have a good handle on remembering past events. </p>



<p>Researchers have tested whether these animals recall what they ate, when they ate it, and where they found it. Their memory holds up, even when they’re older. </p>



<p>Other <a href="https://www.cell.com/iscience/fulltext/S2589-0042(24)01547-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> show they might sometimes form mistaken memories. That means the way they store events in their minds could be as twisty as it is in humans. </p>



<p>Cuttlefish may even exhibit different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-three-fish-make-a-school-study-offers-surprising-insights/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">responses</a> to misleading cues, suggesting a process much like our own memory reconstruction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-intelligence">Understanding intelligence</h2>



<p>Biologists studying big brains in animals often look at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bonobos-group-cohesion-common-enemy-effect-do-not-kill-inside-their-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/animals-care-more-about-unmet-expectations-than-fairness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corvids</a>, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/parrots-have-a-unique-voice-print-similar-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">parrots</a>, because these groups seem to come up with creative solutions to daily challenges. </p>



<p>The cuttlefish’s ability to hold back in a waiting game is a strong clue that self-control doesn’t always depend on working in teams or building fancy tools. It could arise from a creature’s environment. </p>



<p>In this case, it might have grown out of the cuttlefish’s camouflage routine and the need to pick high-quality prey without exposing itself to danger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Cuttlefish might not make complicated gadgets or team up to hunt in packs, yet they handle some tasks as well as animals famous for smarts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That raises a puzzle about how intelligence evolves in separate branches of the animal kingdom. </p>



<p>Scientists have speculated that these brainy feats can pop up when a species needs to adapt in special ways, whether to outwit predators or to find hidden meals.</p>

<p>As an embryo grows, its cells engage in a complex conversation, ensuring the proper formation of tissues and organs. These signals come in chemical and mechanical forms, guiding cells like navigational beacons. However, recent research reveals an additional player in this intricate dance: bio-electric fields.</p>



<p>These invisible currents help direct the movement of cells, particularly the neural crest, a crucial population responsible for forming parts of the face, neck, and nervous system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electric-signals-and-embryo-development">Electric signals and embryo development</h2>



<p>For years, scientists speculated that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electric-field-signals-can-help-us-predict-extreme-weather/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electrical signals</a> played a role in embryonic development. Now, a study led by Dr. Elias H. Barriga provides definitive evidence. </p>



<p>"We have characterized an endogenous bioelectric current pattern, which resembles an electric field during development, and demonstrated that this current can guide migration of a cell population known as the neural crest," noted Dr. Barriga.</p>



<p>His team first began this research at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (<a href="https://gulbenkian.pt/en/a-new-scientific-era/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IGC</a>) in Portugal before continuing their work in Dresden at the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life. The findings challenge previous assumptions about how cells coordinate movement within a developing embryo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electrotaxis-the-traffic-signals-of-development">Electrotaxis: The traffic signals of development</h2>



<p>The concept of electrotaxis, where cells move in response to electric fields, has been studied primarily in artificial lab settings. But Dr. Barriga's work brings this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-magnetic-field-has-a-dent-and-nasa-is-watching-closely/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phenomenon</a> of electric field response into the realm of live embryos. </p>



<p>His team observed that neural crest cells naturally migrate by following internal electrical cues, much like drivers obeying traffic lights.</p>



<p>To understand how cells interpret these bioelectric signals, the researchers identified a key enzyme, voltage-sensitive phosphatase 1 (Vsp1), present in neural crest cells. This enzyme appears to act as both a sensor and a translator of electric fields, enabling cells to move in an organized, directional manner.</p>



<p>Dr. Sofia Moreira, a postdoctoral scientist on the study, found great satisfaction in applying genetic tools to explore bioelectricity. "For me, applying tools I developed to target gene expression in the context of bioelectricity was highly rewarding, and I look forward to its potential being fully exploited."</p>



<p>Interestingly, Vsp1 does not influence cell movement directly. Instead, it ensures cells respond correctly to electrical gradients, making it distinct from other enzymes typically linked to cell migration. This insight paves the way for further exploration into bioelectric guidance systems in development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-electric-fields-form-in-the-embryo">How electric fields form in the embryo</h2>



<p>The study also sheds light on how these electric fields emerge in the embryo. </p>



<p>The team proposed that mechanical stretching in a region known as the neural fold activates specific ion channels, generating a voltage gradient. Neural crest cells then detect this gradient, using Vsp1 to decode the signal and move accordingly.</p>



<p>This discovery marks the first experimental proof that electric fields not only guide migrating cells but also arise along their path. These findings add a new dimension to our understanding of embryonic development, offering a deeper appreciation of bioelectricity’s role in shaping life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-new-era-in-bio-electricity-research">A new era in bio-electricity research</h2>



<p>The implications of this study extend beyond embryology. </p>



<p>"This paper bridges an important, decades-old gap in bio-electricity research, and it is deeply rewarding to be part of the ongoing renaissance in developmental bio-electricity," noted postdoctoral scientist Dr. Fernando Ferreira.</p>



<p>According to Dr. Barriga, the next question is, how does this fit into already established frameworks of mechanical and chemical cues during embryogenesis?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-research">Broader implications of the research</h2>



<p>Beyond embryo development,&nbsp;bioelectric fields may influence wound healing and cancer progression. </p>



<p>In <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/healing-chronic-wounds-with-gold-and-red-wine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wound healing</a>, cells migrate to repair tissues, and electric fields may help direct them, just as they do in embryos. Understanding this process could lead to treatments that&nbsp;speed up recovery&nbsp;and improve healing.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-cancer-cell-death-may-transform-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cancer</a> cells also move in ways similar to embryonic cells. If electric fields influence this migration, researchers could find ways to&nbsp;control cancer spread, leading to potential new therapies.</p>



<p>In&nbsp;regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, scientists aim to rebuild tissues and organs. If electric fields naturally guide cell movement, they could be used to&nbsp;improve lab-grown tissues and nerve regeneration.</p>



<p>This discovery reveals a&nbsp;new layer of biological complexity. Cells respond to bioelectricity, not just chemical and mechanical cues. Further research could&nbsp;unlock new medical breakthroughs, shaping the future of healing, disease treatment, and tissue engineering.</p>

<p>Physicists have long grouped the most basic building blocks of our universe into two categories. One group consists of fermions, which include matter particles like electrons, protons, and neutrons.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The other group contains bosons, which include particles linked to forces like photons and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Higgs particle</a>. These two families differ in their “spin” values and in how many can occupy the same place at once.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-searching-for-paraparticles">Searching for paraparticles</h2>



<p>Recent work suggests a whole new category of quasiparticles called paraparticles might exist. After decades of thinking we had only two options (<a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/doe-explainsbosons-and-fermions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bosons or fermions</a>) scientists discovered a possible third way.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They have only explored these proposed objects in one- and two-dimensional mathematical models, but there is no ironclad reason to dismiss their presence in our three-dimensional world.</p>



<p><a href="https://profiles.rice.edu/faculty/kaden-hazzard" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Kaden Hazzard</a> at <a href="https://www.rice.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rice University</a> appears as one of the key researchers behind this study. </p>



<p>He and his colleague <a href="https://www.mpq.mpg.de/person/127228/4571983" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Zhiyuan Wang</a>, now at the <a href="https://www.mpq.mpg.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics</a>, carried out an in-depth analysis to challenge the assumption that no other particle types could exist.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-paraparticles-might-work">How paraparticles might work</h2>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/particles-are-forming-in-the-atmosphere-in-an-unexpected-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Particles</a> aren’t just these fundamental things,” said Hazzard at the end of one of the study’s statements. </p>



<p>That comment underscores a focus on quasiparticles, which are effective descriptions of how groups of regular particles behave when they interact. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.uni-muenster.de/Physik.AP/Demokritov/en/Forschen/Forschungsschwerpunkte/mBECwaqp.html#" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quasiparticles</a> are not original building blocks of matter. Instead, they show up as patterns or disturbances in a larger system.</p>



<p>Hazzard and Wang’s mathematical efforts centered on condensed matter settings, which involve materials like magnets and other densely packed systems. </p>



<p>They used advanced algebraic methods to handle the exchange of particles within those tight environments. </p>



<p>Their calculations revealed that paraparticles could develop different rules than either <a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/doe-explainsbosons-and-fermions" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fermions or bosons</a> when they switch places.</p>



<p>“We determined that new types of particles we never knew of before are possible,” said Hazzard at the end of another statement. That claim upsets the longstanding idea that quasiparticles always fit into the same old categories.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-are-paraparticles-important">Why are paraparticles important?</h2>



<p>A person might wonder if these hypothetical particles have any real-world use. In recent years, a type of quasiparticle called <a href="https://www.energy.gov/science/bes/articles/anyons-found-best-evidence-yet-these-long-sought-quasi-particles" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anyons</a> has excited <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.53.722" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">researchers</a> looking into quantum computers. The reason is that anyons could help store and process information in more stable ways.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Paraparticles might offer something equally helpful - or maybe even more unusual. Nobody is sure how far this idea could go.</p>



<p>“This is cross-disciplinary research that involves several areas of theoretical physics and mathematics,” said Wang near the end of the published results.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The range of methods used (such as Lie algebra, Hopf algebra, and group theory) points to serious effort in bridging <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-a-monkey-typed-for-infinity-could-it-recreate-shakespeare/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mathematical ideas</a> with physical reality.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-could-paraparticles-appear-in-everyday-life">Could paraparticles appear in everyday life?</h2>



<p>Most breakthroughs in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-spooky-action-at-a-distance-persists-between-top-quarks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">particle physics</a> or condensed matter do not show up on a kitchen table. These paraparticles might appear only under very special conditions. </p>



<p>Right now, the studies point to their appearance in one and two dimensions, like in tightly controlled experiments or possibly in exotic states of matter. It is not clear how often nature might brew up these odd entities, but the door is open for future tests.</p>



<p>“I don’t know where it will go, but I know it will be exciting to find out,” said Hazzard at the end of another remark, echoing the sentiment that today’s curiosity can become tomorrow’s discovery.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For decades, researchers have questioned whether we were missing something in the particle zoo. Now, fresh models indicate there might be more to the story than we assumed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-experiments">Future experiments</h2>



<p>Hazzard and Wang’s new approach is still at an early stage. It demonstrates that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/graviton-like-particle-observed-in-quantum-material-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">condensed matter</a> systems could host paraparticle-like excitations, which means scientists have a place to start searching. </p>



<p>Efforts to nail down signatures of paraparticles may help confirm that they are not just neat math puzzles. These ideas might also spark a wave of research into exotic phases of matter that never quite fit into existing theories.</p>



<p>“It’s also why you don’t just go through your chair when you sit down,” joked Hazzard in one of his public addresses, emphasizing how particle statistics define the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strange-high-energy-cosmic-rays-did-something-outside-our-galaxy-send-them-here/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">entire structure</a> of ordinary matter. </p>



<p>That principle underlies familiar features such as solidity and chemical behavior. If paraparticles lurk anywhere, they might enrich our understanding of why the world is the way it is.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-next">What happens next?</h2>



<p>Researchers may next try to propose experiments that shine light on paraparticle effects in advanced laboratories. Whether they manage to create these new quasiparticles or see them naturally in materials remains to be seen.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Even small hints that paraparticles are real would give scientists a chance to explore phenomena that previously looked off-limits.</p>



<p>For now, the notion stands as a mathematical proof of possibility. It challenges the assumption that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bosons</a> and fermions are the only options and leaves the door open for more surprises.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That sense of possibility is enough to keep many scientists energized. They recognize that what seems purely theoretical now can sometimes lead to major leaps down the road.</p>

<p>Freshwater ecosystems cover less than 1% of Earth's surface, yet they support 10% of all known species. </p>



<p>A recent study published in the journal <em>Nature</em> warns that nearly a quarter of freshwater species face extinction. Thousands of fish, crab, and dragonfly species could disappear in the coming decades unless urgent conservation efforts take place.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-extinction-threat">The extinction threat</h2>



<p>A comprehensive assessment of almost 24,000 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/freshwater-crisis-one-in-four-species-faces-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">freshwater</a> species found that 24% are at risk. Among them, nearly 1,000 species are critically endangered, and 200 may already be extinct. </p>



<p>However, these numbers might only scratch the surface. Scientists lack data on many species, making it difficult to assess their full extinction risk.</p>



<p>"Lack of data on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-reveal-a-sudden-drop-in-global-freshwater-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">freshwater biodiversity</a> can no longer be used as an excuse for inaction," said Catherine Sayer, the study’s lead author. She highlights how freshwater habitats support human life by providing drinking water, livelihoods, flood control, and climate change mitigation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-habitat-loss-of-freshwater-species">Habitat loss of freshwater species</h2>



<p>Freshwater environments are among the most threatened on Earth. As global demand for food, water, and resources rises, these ecosystems face increasing pressure. </p>



<p>Wetlands, including bogs, mangroves, and salt marshes, have suffered immense losses. Since 1700, an area the size of India - 3.4 million square kilometers - has been destroyed.</p>



<p>The loss of wetlands does not only affect wildlife. These ecosystems play a crucial role in climate regulation, water filtration, and flood control. </p>



<p>Other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-cycles-through-plants-with-unexpected-speed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">freshwater</a> sources, such as rivers, suffer from excessive water extraction and dam construction. Some, like the Colorado River, no longer reach the sea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-threats-to-freshwater-species">Additional threats to freshwater species</h2>



<p>Pollution further endangers freshwater species. Industrial waste, plastic debris, and agricultural runoff contaminate rivers and lakes. Many pesticides used to kill pests also harm aquatic creatures, especially during vulnerable life stages.</p>



<p>Despite these growing threats, freshwater species remain understudied. Dr. Topiltzin Contreras MacBeath, a co-author of the study, calls for increased investment in monitoring freshwater biodiversity to guide conservation efforts.</p>



<p>"It is essential that freshwater species data are actively included in conservation strategies and water use management to support healthy freshwater ecosystems," noted Dr. MacBeath.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-which-freshwater-species-are-most-at-risk">Which freshwater species are most at risk?</h2>



<p>The study was focused on four groups that are deeply connected to freshwater ecosystems: decapods, odonates, mollusks, and fish.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decapods-crabs-lobsters-and-shrimp">Decapods: Crabs, lobsters, and shrimp</h3>



<p>Decapods include crustaceans like crabs, crayfish, and shrimp. About 30% of freshwater decapods face extinction, primarily due to pollution. </p>



<p>Pesticides used in farming contaminate waterways, harming crustaceans, especially when they molt.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-odonates-dragonflies-and-damselflies">Odonates: Dragonflies and damselflies</h3>



<p>Dragonflies and damselflies spend much of their lives as aquatic nymphs before becoming airborne predators. Habitat destruction threatens over half of these species. </p>



<p>Wetlands converted to farmland and deforestation have significantly reduced their numbers.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mollusks-snails-mussels-and-oysters">Mollusks: Snails, mussels, and oysters</h3>



<p>Mollusks, including freshwater snails and mussels, were not included in the study due to limited data. </p>



<p>However, previous research suggests that about one-third of mollusk species are endangered. This omission likely means the true percentage of at-risk freshwater species is even higher.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-freshwater-fish">Freshwater fish</h3>



<p>Fish populations suffer from habitat destruction, overfishing, and pollution. Dams fragment river systems, reducing breeding grounds and food availability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saving-freshwater-species-from-extinction">Saving freshwater species from extinction</h2>



<p>Freshwater ecosystems - such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-amount-of-water-do-earths-rivers-hold/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rivers</a>, lakes, wetlands, and streams - exist across multiple countries and continents. Since water flows freely across borders, conservation efforts in one place may not be effective unless neighboring regions also take action.</p>



<p>For example, if one country pollutes a river, the impact is felt downstream in other countries. This makes protecting freshwater species a global challenge, requiring cooperation between governments, conservation groups, and local communities.</p>



<p>To stop freshwater species extinctions, we need a united effort. Countries must work together to manage water use responsibly, ensuring that rivers and lakes do not dry up due to overuse.</p>



<p>Governments should enforce stricter laws to prevent industries from polluting water sources. Investing in conservation programs and restoring damaged ecosystems can also help protect species from disappearing.</p>



<p>Preserving freshwater ecosystems goes beyond safeguarding wildlife. These habitats are essential for providing clean drinking water, sustaining agriculture, and mitigating natural disasters like floods. </p>



<p>They also support the livelihoods of millions, offering food and employment through activities like fishing and farming.</p>

<p>The vaquita (<em>Phocoena sinus</em>) is the world’s rarest marine mammal, with fewer than 10 surviving in the wild. It faces grave challenges, from illegal fishing nets to black-market demand for totoaba swim bladders. </p>



<p>Experts worry that this unique creature could disappear before most people even learn it exists.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vaquitas-a-species-in-peril">Vaquitas: A species in peril</h2>



<p><a href="https://seashepherd.org/2024/06/11/2024-vaquita-survey/#">Populations</a> of this small porpoise have plummeted at an astonishing rate since the late 1990s.</p>



<p>Vaquitas inhabit the northern Gulf of California, and are restricted to an area of roughly 1,500 square miles (3,900 square kilometers). This small region, combined with the pressures of organized poaching activity, has given vaquitas little <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/endangered-lemurs-millions-of-years-of-diversity-at-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">room for recovery</a>. </p>



<p>Jamie Knaub from Florida Atlantic University (<a href="https://www.fau.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAU</a>) and her colleagues believe that drastic measures are necessary to preserve any record of these animals for generations to come.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rescuing-a-rare-vaquita-skeleton">Rescuing a rare vaquita skeleton</h2>



<p>A complete <a href="https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/photos-san-diego-researchers-scan-rare-skeleton-of-worlds-smallest-endangered-porpoise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vaquita skeleton</a> in the United States is hard to find. Such a specimen recently appeared at SeaWorld San Diego, with ties to the San Diego Natural History Museum.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We are delighted to collaborate with likeminded organizations to make our collections as useful and accessible as possible,” said Phil Unitt, curator of birds and mammals at the San Diego Natural History Museum.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“A complete skeleton of a vaquita is an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/public-concern-over-species-extinctions-fades-quickly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extremely rare specimen</a>, so we’re thrilled to learn its replica will be available to the public.”</p>



<p><a href="https://www.fau.edu/newsdesk/articles/fau-high-school-opens-one-of-a-kind-owls-imaging-lab.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAU’s High School Owls Imaging Lab</a> carried out micro-CT scans on the skeleton. Knaub transported it back to Florida as precious carry-on luggage.&nbsp;</p>



<p>She spent 165 hours conducting high-resolution scans, gathering nearly three terabytes of data. When finished, Knaub carefully returned the vaquita remains to SeaWorld.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-hopes-for-the-tiniest-porpoise">High hopes for the tiniest porpoise</h2>



<p>Researchers are eager to share 3D scans of this delicate skeleton on the <a href="https://www.morphosource.org/docs/about" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MorphoSource</a> online repository. The goal is to let educators and researchers worldwide access and learn from the files.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With vaquitas vanishing at a high rate, preserving their anatomy through digital replicas could be the only way to keep them on the radar.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“At the rate that vaquita’s are disappearing, it’s extremely important to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-we-failing-the-worlds-most-threatened-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preserve</a> as much about this species as we can. They are very elusive and not many physical specimens from this species exist,” said Knaub.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-education-and-replication-efforts">Education and replication efforts</h2>



<p>The experts hope that these skeleton scans, once turned into models, can be placed in museums or classrooms. Brittany Aja Dolan from SeaWorld San Diego, who pushed this plan forward, wants everyone to see the small porpoise up close.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We hope that by creating replicas, which will be available worldwide, and hopefully on display at SeaWorld San Diego in the near future, everyone will have the opportunity to learn about the world’s most endangered marine mammal and what we can all do to help,” explained Dolan.</p>



<p>Some genetic <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abm1742" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> suggests the surviving vaquitas retain enough diversity to bounce back if threats cease. However, rapid action is crucial.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-vaquita-data-for-future-research">Preserving vaquita data for future research</h2>



<p>FAU’s advanced imaging technology captured the skeleton’s intricate details. </p>



<p>The lab’s <a href="https://www.microphotonics.com/what-is-micro-ct-an-introduction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">micro-CT machine</a> is known for its ability to scan minute structures within skeletal fragments. Knaub, along with her mentors, previously used similar equipment to study thresher shark vertebrae, a study that is published in <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.231473" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Royal Society Open Science</em></a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The same techniques have now preserved the precise shape of each vaquita bone, thus mapping out a piece of history that might soon be gone if illegal nets continue to harm the species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-unique-laboratory-environment">A unique laboratory environment</h2>



<p>FAU’s Owls Imaging Lab attracts student researchers from across various disciplines. This facility contains tools like scanning electron microscopes and microtomes, and offers early exposure to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-is-tracking-endangered-animal-habitats-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">high-level projects</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The primary aim of our open-access research hub is to create a dynamic environment that promotes meaningful collaborations between our students and university mentors," said Tricia Meredith, director of research for FAU’s on-site lab schools.</p>



<p>"By providing opportunities for hands-on teaching, innovative demonstrations, experimentation, and robust data collection, the hub seeks to enhance the educational experience and advance research excellence.” </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-beyond-the-brink">Looking beyond the brink</h2>



<p>Those involved in the vaquita project see it as a chance to save the species in some form, even if the real animals fade away. There is also motivation to rescue any remaining individuals in the Gulf of California.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Organizations like FAU, SeaWorld San Diego, and the San Diego Natural History Museum keep shining a light on this small porpoise, stressing that the vaquita’s future rests on determined human intervention.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Until effective solutions disrupt the illegal fishing trade, digital scans and educational displays might be the closest many of us will ever come to encountering the vaquita in real life.</p>

<p>Woodrats are small desert rodents that have baffled scientists for years with their peculiar ability to eat the toxic creosote bush. Creosote leaves are laden with resin that would make most animals sick, but these tenacious creatures feast on it day after day.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For decades, researchers wondered whether woodrats adapted by evolving highly specialized enzymes or if they simply produce an enormous amount of more general detoxification enzymes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woodrats-eat-toxic-plants-without-harm">Woodrats eat toxic plants without harm</h2>



<p>Scientists investigating this question observed that woodrats can live in areas where creosote has taken over.</p>



<p>Many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/are-rats-using-ultrasonic-sounds-to-enhance-their-sense-of-smell/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> avoid the spindly green shrub because it’s coated with a chemical mix that can disrupt crucial processes in their bodies. Yet, these rodents thrive. </p>



<p>In a recent study, researchers discovered a twist in the woodrat enzyme story: it isn’t about better tools, but more of them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woodrat-survival-through-gene-duplication">Woodrat survival through gene duplication</h2>



<p>This discovery was led by postdoctoral researcher Dylan Klure, along with a team of colleagues at the University of Utah. The experts zeroed in on how two woodrat species independently evolved to handle large doses of resin that would debilitate other mammals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After comparing both creosote-tolerant and creosote-sensitive woodrats, the results pointed toward a surge in gene copies rather than improved enzyme function.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-quick-jump-in-evolutionary-terms">A quick jump in evolutionary terms</h2>



<p>Creosote may have entered the southwestern desert around the end of the last ice age, about 15,000 years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“These woodrats have only been exposed to creosote bush for about 15,000 years, and in an evolutionary timescale, that’s very little time,” said Klure, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Utah and lead author of the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This short window hasn’t stopped woodrats from crafting a workable solution. When food is scarce, animals can either adapt to what’s available or starve. </p>



<p>Woodrats apparently adapted by copying existing detoxification genes and pumping out the related enzymes at high levels.</p>

<p>According to the researchers, these detox genes are part of the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35599377/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glucuronidation pathway.</a> In humans, this <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7660525/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pathway</a> helps metabolize a notable chunk of prescription drugs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By mapping which genes were active in woodrats’ livers, the scientists found an abundance of duplicates that churn out enzymes strong enough to process resin toxins. </p>



<p>The presence of multiple copies means a single woodrat can manufacture waves of enzyme molecules to quickly flush harmful compounds out of its system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-alternative-to-specialized-enzymes">An alternative to specialized enzymes</h2>



<p>“Rather than new tools specially designed for metabolizing this toxin, evolution made use of existing machinery - just by making more of it,” said senior author Denise Dearing, professor of biology at the University of Utah.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This stands in contrast to earlier findings in other species where smaller numbers of finely tuned enzymes handle toxins. In the woodrats’ case, the key isn’t building a fancy detox gadget - it’s mass-producing what they already have.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-did-woodrats-shift-to-toxic-plants">Why did woodrats shift to toxic plants?</h2>



<p>Historically, woodrats dined on more abundant plants like juniper. However, climatic shifts dried up many parts of the Southwest, giving the <a href="https://btarboretum.org/creosote/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">creosote bush</a> room to spread. This forced the local animals to either move or adapt.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Some rodent populations picked the new leaves, survived, and reproduced - thus passing along their genetic advantage to the next generation.</p>



<p>Over time, these gene duplications reached surprisingly high levels in regions where creosote has been around the longest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-woodrat-nests-reveal-their-changing-diet">Woodrat nests reveal their changing diet</h2>



<p>Paleontologists studying ancient woodrat nests found <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7081288/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> that their diet mirrored changes in plant communities. Woodrats left behind “middens,” or nest sites stacked with plant fragments, seeds, and twigs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By comparing fossils from different time periods, the experts traced the shift from juniper to creosote. </p>



<p>The rodents’ DNA adapted alongside this changing meal plan, illustrating how an environmental upheaval can nudge <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modern-day-plague-rodents-fleas-and-their-impact-on-wildlife/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animals</a> down a new dietary path.</p>

<p>The genetic shift happened separately in two species of woodrats that faced similar conditions. This kind of parallel evolution suggests a powerful nudge from nature.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“When creosote invades, it just takes over. It’s kind of an adapt-or-die situation,” said Klure. For woodrats, duplication of existing genes was apparently an easier workaround than redesigning detoxification enzymes from scratch.</p>

<p>Scientists see a parallel between woodrats’ enzyme explosion and differences in detoxifying chemicals among humans.</p>

<p>This might explain why individuals respond differently to medications or certain foods. Studying woodrats in controlled experiments could shine more light on these variations.</p>

<p>At first glance, the woodrats’ solution seems simple: copy genes until you can safely eat a toxic shrub. Yet, this adaptation demonstrates that quantity sometimes trumps refinement in the race to survive.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Frequent duplications of existing detox genes allowed these rodents to remain in dry habitats overrun by a bush most mammals avoid. Such repeated expansions may be a more common strategy across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-rodent-borne-diseases-spill-over-into-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">animal kingdom</a> than previously thought.</p>

<p>An active galactic nucleus (AGN) is a region at the center of a galaxy where a supermassive black hole is actively consuming surrounding material. </p>



<p>As this matter spirals toward the black hole, it forms a hot, glowing disk called an accretion disk, which emits enormous amounts of energy across the electromagnetic spectrum. This process makes AGNs some of the brightest and most energetic objects in the universe.</p>



<p>Now, astronomers at the University of Arizona and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy have captured the sharpest infrared images ever taken of an AGN.</p>



<p>Using the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer (LBTI), the researchers observed the AGN in NGC 1068 - one of the closest active galaxies to the Milky Way. </p>



<p>The images reveal new details about how black holes interact with their surroundings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-capabilities-of-an-extremely-large-telescope">Capabilities of an extremely large telescope </h2>



<p>The&nbsp;Large Binocular Telescope (<a href="https://www.lbto.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LBT</a>), located on&nbsp;Mount Graham in Arizona, features two 8.4-meter mirrors mounted side by side. When combined through interferometry, they function as a single, extremely large telescope.</p>



<p>"The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer can be considered the first extremely large telescope, so it's very exciting to prove this is possible," said&nbsp;Jacob Isbell, postdoctoral researcher at <a href="https://astro.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Steward Observatory</a> and lead author of the study.</p>



<p>The LBTI&nbsp;has already demonstrated its ability to capture incredibly detailed images of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/many-supermassive-black-holes-are-hidden-by-gas-and-dust/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial objects</a>. One of its most notable achievements was studying&nbsp;volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io, where it provided unprecedented observations of volcanic activity on another world.</p>



<p>Building on this success, scientists decided to apply the same imaging technique to studying&nbsp;active galactic nuclei. They believed that if the interferometer could capture fine details on Io, it could also reveal new insights about the structure and behavior of AGN. </p>



<p>This decision led to the highest-resolution infrared images ever taken of an AGN, marking a major step forward in understanding how supermassive black holes interact with their surroundings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closer-look-at-an-active-galactic-nucleus">Closer look at an active galactic nucleus</h2>



<p>Supermassive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/evidence-of-massive-early-universe-black-hole-stuns-astronomers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black holes</a> sit at the center of many galaxies, but they are not always "active." A black hole becomes active when it pulls in a significant amount of surrounding material, such as gas and dust. </p>



<p>The more material that enters the spinning accretion disk, the hotter and brighter it becomes, emitting intense light.</p>



<p>In galaxies like&nbsp;NGC 1068, the accretion disk is extremely bright, indicating that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-black-hole-is-seen-taking-a-nap-after-eating-too-much/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a> is actively consuming matter. This brightness is a key sign of an&nbsp;active galactic nucleus, meaning the black hole is in a feeding phase, releasing vast amounts of energy that can affect its surrounding galaxy.</p>



<p>"The AGN within the galaxy NGC 1068 is especially bright, so it was the perfect opportunity to test this method," Isbell said. "These are the highest resolution direct images of an AGN taken so far."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-images-capture-black-hole-behavior">Images capture black hole behavior </h2>



<p>The new images of the active galactic nucleus from <a href="https://www.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a> and the <a href="https://www.mpia.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Astronomy</a> revealed multiple cosmic processes occurring at the same time.</p>



<p>One of these is&nbsp;radiation pressure and dusty winds, where the intense light from the accretion disk pushes surrounding dust outward, creating a wind of tiny particles. This phenomenon occurs because the powerful radiation from the black hole exerts pressure on the dust, forcing it to move away.</p>



<p>Another process observed is&nbsp;radio jet feedback, where a powerful jet of radiation and particles emitted by the black hole collides with nearby clouds of molecular gas and dust. This collision heats the gas to temperatures much higher than expected, significantly impacting the surrounding environment.</p>



<p>In previous studies, lower-resolution images could not separate these distinct processes, making them appear as a single blended effect.</p>



<p>However, the exceptional clarity of the&nbsp; LBTI&nbsp;has now allowed astronomers to distinguish between these individual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mysterious-x-ray-flashes-are-accelerating-in-a-black-hole/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phenomena</a>, providing a much clearer understanding of how AGN interact with their host galaxies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-the-frontiers-of-astronomy">Expanding the frontiers of astronomy </h2>



<p>The observations mark a major step forward in AGN research and set the stage for future discoveries with even larger telescopes, like the Giant Magellan Telescope (<a href="https://giantmagellan.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GMT</a>) in Chile.</p>



<p>"This type of imaging can be used on any <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-black-holes-become-supermassive/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">astronomical object</a>," Isbell said. "We've already started looking at disks around stars or very large, evolved stars, which have dusty envelopes around them."</p>



<p>As telescope technology advances, scientists will gain an even deeper understanding of black holes and their influence on galaxies. The new tools and their images will help unravel the mysteries of how black holes shape the universe, leading to groundbreaking discoveries in astrophysics.</p>

<p>Most life on Earth depends on sunlight, yet some organisms flourish in the dark depths of the ocean where sunlight never reaches.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A study led by the <a href="https://www.whoi.edu/who-we-are/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution</a> (WHOI) provides new details about the survival of foraminifera - tiny, single-celled eukaryotes found in diverse marine environments.</p>



<p>The experts investigated how a species of foraminifera thrives in an oxygen-free, lightless, deep-sea habitat by employing a remarkable metabolic strategy: chemoautotrophy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organisms-in-the-depths-of-the-ocean">Organisms in the depths of the ocean</h2>



<p>Chemoautotrophy is a process where organisms harness energy from inorganic compounds, such as sulfide, to assimilate carbon and sustain life in the absence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-can-deep-ocean-microbes-survive-without-sunlight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunlight</a>. </p>



<p>While this metabolic pathway is common among prokaryotic bacteria and archaea (which have no nucleus in their cells), it is unusual in eukaryotes (organisms with a nucleus in each cell), that typically rely on sunlight or organic matter for their source of energy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Foraminifera, though eukaryotic, have adapted to use chemoautotrophy to enable them to survive where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/it-took-200-million-years-for-earth-to-get-its-oxygen/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxygen</a> and sunlight are absent.</p>



<p>“Animals, plants, seaweed, and foraminifera are all eukaryotes. We were interested in studying this foraminiferan because it thrives in a very similar environment to [that present on] Earth during the Precambrian, a time before the evolution of animals,” explained Fatma Gomaa, a research associate in WHOI’s Geology &amp; Geophysics Department.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“During that time, there was very little to no available oxygen in the oceans and higher concentrations of toxic inorganic compounds; conditions similar to some modern environments found on the seafloor, especially within sediments.”</p>



<p>According to Gomaa, understanding the energy and carbon sources used by this foraminiferan helps to answer questions on how these species adapt to environmental changes, as well as advancing our knowledge on the evolution of eukaryotic life on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigating-life-in-an-extreme-habitat">Investigating life in an extreme habitat</h2>



<p>The research team collected sediment samples containing these foraminiferans approximately 570 meters (1,870 feet) beneath the ocean’s surface off the coast of California. For this, they used the remotely operated vehicle Hercules, which was deployed from the vessel E/V Nautilus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To study these organisms in their natural state, scientists infused samples with a preservative containing red dye and preserved them in situ, which avoided the destructive changes that can occur when organisms are brought from depth to the surface.</p>



<p>Two primary techniques were used to understand the foraminiferan’s metabolic strategies. First, gene expression analyses were conducted on preserved samples to identify metabolic pathways.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Second, in situ incubations were carried out using an isotopic carbon tracer, which allowed researchers to track how the organisms incorporated carbon over a 24-hour period while still on the seafloor.</p>



<p>“When we analyzed the seafloor tracer incubations, we could see that the tracer moved from the water and was associated with the foraminifera biomass. This gave us an idea of where these organisms were getting their carbon,” said Daniel Rogers, an associate professor of chemistry and department chair at Stonehill College.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Professor Rogers noted that it was important to make these observations at depth, where these organisms are in their natural state.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“By bringing them to the surface, we expose them to light, increase the temperature of their environment, and change the amount of pressure they’re under. This in situ approach gives us a more accurate depiction of how these organisms survive in such harsh environments.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stealing-chloroplasts-in-the-dark">Stealing chloroplasts in the dark</h2>



<p>Another intriguing discovery is the process of kleptoplasty observed in these foraminiferans. Despite living in complete darkness, this species sequesters <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chloroplasts-play-an-unexpected-role-in-plant-immunity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chloroplasts</a> - organelles typically used for photosynthesis - from other organisms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Although these stolen chloroplasts cannot perform photosynthesis without light, their presence may confer other advantages, aiding the foraminiferan in nutrient acquisition or other metabolic processes.</p>



<p>“Foraminifera are extremely abundant on earth. Most are only about 300 microns in diameter, so rather small. In a volume as small as a pencil eraser, there could be about 500 of this particular species in this dark, oxygen-free and sulfidic habitat,” explained Joan Bernhard, a senior scientist at WHOI, and an expert on foraminifera.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This species takes up unrelated organism’s chloroplasts - organelles that perform photosynthesis if exposed to sunlight. This process is called kleptoplasty, in which an organism steals chloroplasts from another type of organism, even though these foraminifera are never exposed to sunlight.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We know kleptoplasty is happening here, but we needed more research to understand why this foraminiferan is so successful in the dark, without oxygen.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-science">Broader implications for science</h2>



<p>The ability of foraminiferans to thrive in extreme environments not only expands our understanding of eukaryotic survival strategies but also has implications for climate change research and the search for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expanding-the-search-for-extraterrestrial-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extraterrestrial life</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Foraminifera shells serve as important climate proxies, preserving a fossil record that spans over half a billion years. These fossils help scientists reconstruct past environmental conditions, but the discovery of chemoautotrophy prompts a reevaluation of how these organisms acquire energy and how their shells reflect ancient climates.</p>



<p>“By studying these fossils, we can see how their shells have responded to changes in the environment,” Bernhard noted.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The metabolic adaptations of deep-sea foraminifera may require scientists to reconsider interpretations of geochemical records in their shells, potentially revealing new insights into Earth’s history.</p>



<p>Additionally, the funding interest from NASA highlights the relevance of this research beyond Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The deep-sea environment shares similarities with extraterrestrial settings - such as low temperatures, darkness, and an absence of oxygen - providing a model for how life might survive on other planets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-on-foraminifera">Future research on foraminifera </h2>



<p>The study preserved specimens of two other foraminiferan species, with preliminary results suggesting distinct biological differences in their energy and carbon acquisition strategies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Ongoing research aims to compare these species, and to illuminate how various foraminifera thrive in diverse and extreme marine habitats.</p>



<p>As scientists continue to investigate these remarkable organisms, their findings not only advance our understanding of deep-sea life but also offer a glimpse into early eukaryotic evolution on a young, oxygen-poor Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Through the study of foraminifera, researchers gain insights into life’s resilience under harsh conditions - a knowledge that could inform our search for life beyond our planet and deepen our comprehension of Earth’s complex biological history.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
