<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>You may have come across axolotls - those smiling amphibians with pink, plume-like gills - in pet stores, as plush toys, or even featured in video games. </p>



<p>Yet, their growing presence in popular culture has emerged just as the wild population of this remarkable species faces critical endangerment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-axolotls-have-become-a-cultural-icon">Axolotls have become a cultural icon</h2>



<p>James Monaghan, a biology professor at <a href="https://www.northeastern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northeastern University</a>, has long studied axolotls and their extraordinary regenerative capabilities. “Axolotls have just exploded in popularity the past couple of years,” he said. </p>



<p>Monaghan recalled that when he began his PhD studies, the general public had little idea what an axolotl was.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“No one knew in the general public what an axolotl was, so I'd have to explain,” he remembered, contrasting that with today’s situation: “Now I just can say, 'Oh, I work on axolotls,' and everyone just lights up.”</p>



<p>Monaghan noted that young people, in particular, have been drawn to axolotls, most likely due to their aesthetic charm.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“They're pink, they have feathers,” he said. “Well, they don't really have feathers, but their gills are feathery. They have a constant little smile on their face. If you were to create a cute animal that you couldn't think existed naturally, it's kind of the axolotl. It's got the vibes of a dragon, but a nice dragon.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-ancient-roots-to-gaming-stardom">From ancient roots to gaming stardom</h2>



<p>The axolotl is no newcomer to cultural significance. “It's named after an Aztec god, Xolotl,” Monaghan explained, referencing its deep ties to Mexican heritage. Initially found in Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City, this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/over-40-of-amphibians-face-extinction-due-to-escalating-climate-threats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amphibian</a>’s recent surge in popularity has transcended borders.</p>



<p>Its presence in mainstream culture can be traced in part to its introduction into the world of <em>Minecraft</em>, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-violent-video-games-impact-the-human-mind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">video game</a> of immense popularity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“<em>Minecraft</em> is enormously popular for young players. The game allows for social play, exploration, sandbox style play where you can make anything,” said Northeastern assistant professor of computer science Alexandra To. By featuring axolotls, the game inspires curiosity and a desire to learn.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Minecraft provides players great intrinsic motivation to discover more about any new elements that are added to the game,” To added.</p>



<p>In some cases, this might involve players constructing elaborate environments to house every in-game creature. “As my own partner did, in embarking on a project to create an enormous zoo with every in-world animal,” she remarked.</p>



<p>Monaghan suggests that axolotls may have also influenced other media. “I don't know if it's actually the motivation for 'How To Train Your Dragon,'” he said, pointing out that the character Toothless resembles an axolotl with its perpetual smile and ear-like flaps suggesting feathery gills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance-of-axolotls-nbsp">Scientific significance of axolotls&nbsp;</h2>



<p>While their looks and cultural presence have captured public affection, axolotls are scientifically remarkable as well. Their regenerative powers extend beyond limbs. Monaghan’s lab has found that they can regenerate a large portion or their lung.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“They are notoriously resistant to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-the-next-frontier-in-cancer-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancers</a>, never get infections after an injury,” he said, and can live for up to two decades - qualities that have made them valuable subjects of study for generations.</p>



<p>“Axolotls are the longest standing lab animal of any animal, longer than flies, longer than worms, longer than mice,” Monaghan said. First collected in 1864 from Lake Xochimilco, their initial appeal stemmed from their unusual, fully aquatic life cycle.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over time, they became critical for studies on genetics, development, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-sheds-light-on-the-pathways-of-plant-regeneration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regeneration</a>. With modern genetic tools like CRISPR, researchers can now pinpoint which genes drive their regenerative capabilities.</p>



<p>All lab and pet axolotls today descend from that original 19th-century population, and this lineage includes the distinct white axolotl familiar to fans worldwide.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The white axolotl, which seems to be pretty much every stuffed animal that's out there, is actually a mutation of a single animal that was collected in 1864,” Monaghan explained. “You can get color variants, but the pink variety - that's from one founding animal.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-species-in-peril">A species in peril</h2>



<p>As axolotls capture hearts around the globe, their wild counterparts hover on the brink of extinction. Once, locals could easily scoop them from Lake Xochimilco’s waters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Maybe up to the 1950s, you could put a net in Lake Xochimilco, the canal system, and pull up adult axolotls. And then every decade since, it's just crashed,” Monaghan said. “To the point now that they're critically endangered, and it takes weeks to even find one.”</p>



<p>They are exquisitely sensitive to environmental changes. “Being an amphibian, you're at the whim of your environment. You're taking in everything through your water,” he explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Climate change warms these waters, making survival harder, while pollution and introduced species further destroy fragile habitats and devour axolotl eggs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-challenge-of-conservation">The challenge of conservation</h2>



<p>Given their success in captivity, one might assume we could simply return these lab and pet lineages to Lake Xochimilco. But it’s not that simple.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It's probably not the best strategy to take a species that's been inbred since 1864 and reintroduce it into its natural habitat,” Monaghan said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The modern axolotl has adapted to controlled conditions, while its original environment has changed drastically.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We can't take the current axolotl and put it into the environment in Mexico City and expect them to thrive the same way as the original collection in 1864. The environment's changed, but the animals themselves have changed.”</p>



<p>Still, rising awareness may help efforts to protect the axolotl’s wild habitat. According to To, the team behind <em>Minecraft</em> has embraced conservation as part of its mission.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Mojang has been pretty transparent about conservation as one of their core values,” she explained. “The inclusion of axolotls and their in-game rareness mirroring their real-world endangered status is a fantastic example of how game mechanics can reinforce educational messages.”</p>



<p>Monaghan is involved as well, serving on the advisory board of the Ambystoma Genetic Stock Center to support both scientific understanding and conservation. “Those direct efforts could really go a long way toward saving the axolotl,” he said.</p>



<p>All this attention suggests that the axolotl’s time has arrived. “All of a sudden, it seems to be absolutely everywhere,” Monaghan said.&nbsp; Yet, for all the joy and fascination these creatures provide, the work to secure their future in the wild is only just beginning.</p>

Axolotls have exploded in popularity, but they are also fighting extinction

You may have come across axolotls - those smiling amphibians...

<p>Ants are capable of amazing feats, such as moving objects many times their size. A team of researchers in South Korea has introduced a swarm of magnetic robots that can replicate the extraordinary abilities of ants - and take them even further.</p>



<p>These tiny marvels aren't just mimicking nature; they're set to revolutionize how we approach complex tasks, from medical applications to industrial solutions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-robots-for-big-tasks">Tiny robots for big tasks</h2>



<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.hanyang.ac.kr/web/eng" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hanyang University</a> in Seoul, South Korea, have replicated the power of a colony of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ants-are-now-using-cars-to-travel-spread-to-new-locations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ants</a> through an army of microbots. </p>



<p>These tiny, magnetic robots can work together to perform tasks that would be impossible for a single robot. Peak performance by the microbots was observed when they were grouped in high aspect ratio assemblies.</p>



<p>These microbot armies proved capable of scaling obstacles five times their own length. They could even leap over obstacles one by one, like a sprinter jumping over a hurdle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mighty-microbots-in-action">Mighty microbots in action</h2>



<p>Picture a battalion of 1,000 microbots forming a raft that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microrobots-tested-as-clean-up-crew-for-polluted-waters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">floats on water</a>. This synthetic raft could wrap itself around an object like a pill that weighs in at a whopping 2,000 times the weight of a single microbot.</p>



<p>The raft allowed the microbots to "transport" the pill through a liquid medium. But their usefulness isn't limited to water-based tasks.</p>



<p>On dry land, the microbots could also transport cargo that was 350 times heavier than each individual bot.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collaborative-efforts-to-overcome-obstacles">Collaborative efforts to overcome obstacles</h2>



<p>Inspiration for the design of the microbots was drawn from ants, which are known for their collaborative efforts to overcome obstacles and ensure their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ant-colonies-behave-like-neural-networks-when-making-decisions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">collective survival</a>.</p>



<p>Just like ants, these robots can perform their programmed tasks despite their individual failures, eventually achieving the goal through collective effort.</p>



<p>"Swarm robotics has emerged as a promising methodology for accomplishing complicated tasks through collective behavior of multiple robots," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"A key feature of swarm robotics is fault tolerance: while a single robot or multiple robots in a swarm may fail to complete an allocated mission, other robots continue to perform their programmed motions until the mission succeeds."&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-innovation-in-robot-design">Innovation in robot design</h2>



<p>Instead of using a conventional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-design-and-build-walking-robots-in-seconds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robot design</a>, the team opted for cube-shaped microbots.</p>



<p>The change in shape allowed a larger surface area - the entire face of each cube - to make contact. This enabled stronger magnetic attractions between the microbots.</p>



<p>Each of these microbots stands only 600 micrometers tall and contains ferromagnetic neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) particles. This unique design allows them to respond to magnetic fields and interact with their fellow <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-cannot-outrun-animals-but-theyre-evolving-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">robots</a>.</p>



<p>Manipulating the angle at which these microbots were magnetized resulted in the formation of different configurations. </p>



<p>According to study co-author Jeong Jae Wie, a cost-effective mass-production method involving onsite replica molding and magnetization was developed to ensure uniform geometry and consistent performance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-microbot-swarms">Future of microbot swarms</h2>



<p>Despite the promising results, there are still improvements to be made. </p>



<p>Although the microbots can climb, throw things over an obstacle and lift objects, they currently require external magnetic control and lack the ability to navigate independently in complex spaces such as actual narrow arteries.</p>



<p>However, upcoming research aims to enhance the autonomy level of these microbot swarms, focusing on real-time feed control of their movements and trajectories.</p>



<p>The work of the South Korean scientists captures the beauty of innovation at its finest - turning the ordinary into extraordinary.</p>



<p>As we watch the future of medical technology unfold, one thing is clear - these mighty microbots are just the beginning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-applications-beyond-medicine">Potential applications beyond medicine</h2>



<p>While the magnetic microbots are making waves in medical technology, their potential applications extend far beyond the confines of healthcare.</p>

<p>Future advances in microbot autonomy could enable them to navigate complex environments independently, opening doors to breakthroughs in swarm-based logistics systems, disaster response technologies, and more.</p>

<p>It is a fascinating fact that a swirl of stars, light-years away from us, shares an uncanny resemblance to our home galaxy, the Milky Way.</p>



<p>A group of astronomers has stumbled upon a galaxy in the making that appears to be a mirror image of what our Milky Way might have resembled during its early stages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-firefly-sparkle-and-the-milky-way">Firefly Sparkle and the Milky Way </h2>



<p>Nestled among the cosmos, this nascent galaxy, known as the "Firefly Sparkle," presents an awe-inspiring spectacle. Its unique similarity to a fledgling Milky Way has sparked curiosity among astronomers worldwide.</p>



<p>What makes this discovery even more interesting is the striking timeframe in which the galaxy seems to have come into existence - a mere 600 million years after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-observations-disprove-big-bang-theory-universe-began-tired-light-theory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Bang</a>, the cosmic event that created the universe as we know it.</p>



<p>This is around the same era that our own galaxy started to form, which adds an additional layer of fascination.</p>



<p>The splendor of the Firefly Sparkle is vividly showcased through images that have been captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.</p>



<p>The images reveal the spectacular <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-star-clusters-captured-in-the-extreme-outskirts-of-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">clusters of stars</a> that form the galaxy, each twinkling into existence at different periods. This multifarious formation is another attribute that the Firefly Sparkle shares with the Milky Way.</p>

<p>"I didn't think it would be possible to resolve a galaxy that existed so early in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-confirms-hubble-constant-our-understanding-of-universe-expansion-very-wrong/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe</a> into so many distinct components, let alone find that its mass is similar to our own galaxy's when it was in the process of forming," said Professor Mowla.</p>



<p>The tiny Firefly Sparkle galaxy, with its wide array of star formation stages, is shedding new light on our own Milky Way and its past. The images will serve as the basis for extensive study and learning for years to come.</p>

<p>“This is just the first of many such galaxies JWST will discover, as we are only starting to use these cosmic microscopes,” noted Maruša Bradač from the <a href="https://www.uni-lj.si/en/university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Ljubljana</a>. </p>



<p>“Just like microscopes let us see pollen grains from plants, the incredible resolution of Webb and the magnifying power of gravitational lensing let us see the small pieces inside galaxies.”</p>

<p>The Moon, Earth’s eternal companion, continues to captivate scientists. Despite decades of research and lunar missions, one fundamental question remains unresolved: how old is the Moon? </p>



<p>Current estimates suggest the Moon formed around 4.35 billion years ago, but some evidence hints at an older age that is closer to 4.51 billion years.</p>



<p>This discrepancy has fueled debates and inspired new research, including a recent study proposing that the Moon underwent a "volcanic facelift" billions of years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-the-moon-s-age">Mystery of the Moon's age</h2>



<p>Lunar rock samples brought back by missions like <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/specials/apollo50th/missions.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apollo</a> have provided crucial insights. These samples indicate that the Moon formed about 200 million years after the solar system’s formation.</p>



<p>However, this timeline seems inconsistent with the chaotic early days of the solar system, during which debris coalesced into planets. </p>



<p>By the time the Moon supposedly formed, most debris had already merged into larger celestial bodies, making a late-forming Moon improbable.</p>



<p>Adding to the mystery, zircon minerals on the Moon suggest an age of up to 4.51 billion years. This mismatch between lunar rock ages and thermal models has puzzled researchers for years. </p>



<p>Now, scientists may have an explanation: a massive remelting event caused by tidal forces could have "reset" the Moon's geological clock.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-tidal-heating">The role of tidal heating</h2>



<p>In a paper published in the journal <em>Nature</em>, a team led by Professor Francis Nimmo from <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Cruz</a> explored how tidal forces may have reshaped the Moon's geological history.</p>



<p>“We predict that there shouldn't be any lunar rocks that are older than 4.35 billion years because they should have experienced the same resetting,” said Nimmo.</p>



<p>Tidal heating occurs when gravitational forces create internal friction within a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-pt5-mini-moon-say-goodbye-to-earths-second-moon-we-barely-got-to-know-you/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial body</a>, which generates heat. In the Moon's early history, its proximity to Earth likely amplified these effects.</p>



<p>The researchers propose that around 4.35 billion years ago, the Moon's orbit became unstable, leading to intense tidal forces. This caused widespread volcanic activity that altered the Moon’s surface and reset the age of its rocks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-from-jupiter-s-moon-io">Insights from Jupiter's moon Io</h2>



<p>The study draws parallels between the Moon’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-may-have-captured-the-moon-from-space/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">past</a> and the current volcanic activity on Jupiter’s moon Io, the most volcanically active body in the solar system.</p>



<p>Io’s elliptical orbit around Jupiter creates tidal forces that heat its interior, driving constant eruptions. Similarly, early tidal heating could have caused the Moon’s mantle to churn, thus melting and reshaping its crust.</p>



<p>The intense volcanic activity likely erased evidence of earlier impacts and geological features. </p>



<p>According to the researchers, this explains why fewer impact basins are visible on the Moon’s surface than are predicted by models for an older Moon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-perspective-on-the-moon-s-age">New perspective on the Moon's age</h2>



<p>Using advanced modeling, Nimmo’s team showed that tidal heating events could have melted significant portions of the Moon’s crust, resetting the ages of most lunar rocks to around 4.35 billion years. </p>



<p>This process left only a few heat-resistant zircons as remnants of the Moon's earlier history.</p>



<p>“The strong volcanism likely reset the Moon's geological clock,” said Thorsten Kleine, a co-author of the study.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that the Moon itself formed between 4.43 and 4.51 billion years ago, but intense volcanic activity reshaped its crust around 4.35 billion years ago.</p>



<p>This revised timeline resolves contradictions between lunar rock samples, thermal models, and the scarcity of impact basins.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-valuable-data-from-unexplored-lunar-regions">Valuable data from unexplored lunar regions</h2>



<p>The study highlights the importance of tidal heating in shaping the Moon’s geological history. </p>



<p>Nimmo emphasized the need for more detailed simulations and new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-has-lost-its-mini-moon-2024-pt5-may-have-come-from-our-main-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lunar</a> samples to refine these findings. "We hope that our findings will spark further discussion and exploration,” he said. </p>



<p>Upcoming missions, like China’s Chang’e 6, are expected to provide valuable data from previously unexplored lunar regions.</p>



<p>These fresh samples could confirm whether a global remelting event did indeed reset the Moon’s geological clock. </p>



<p>The researchers also plan to investigate how tidal heating affected the Moon’s interior and surface composition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcanism-reset-the-moon-s-age">Volcanism reset the Moon's age</h2>



<p>The new findings offer a unifying explanation for several longstanding lunar mysteries. They indicate that volcanism may have reset the ages of lunar rocks and also erased evidence of early impacts and altered the composition of the Moon’s mantle.</p>



<p>“The new results mean that all the pieces of the puzzle that previously didn’t fit together now form a coherent overall picture of the Moon's formation,” said Kleine.</p>



<p>Determining the Moon’s age is crucial for understanding not just its history but also the broader story of the solar system. </p>



<p>If the Moon’s true age remains elusive, it raises questions about the accuracy of dating methods used for other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-learn-composition-of-moons-interior-core-its-not-green-cheese/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial bodies</a>. </p>



<p>With ongoing and future lunar missions, scientists are hopeful that the Moon will finally reveal its secrets, illuminating the early history of our cosmic neighborhood.</p>

<p>Desert locusts are notorious for their ability to transform from solitary insects into devastating swarms under specific environmental conditions. </p>



<p>Triggered by events like intense rainfall, these swarms can devastate crops, pushing food prices higher and leading to starvation and unrest. But now, a new study offers hope for controlling this menace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-extent-of-the-problem">The extent of the problem</h2>



<p>Locust swarms are one of nature's most destructive phenomena. Under favorable conditions, locusts form <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/locusts-have-brains-built-for-complex-odor-processing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">large groups</a>, known as swarms, that can devastate entire regions. </p>



<p>These swarms can grow so massive that they resemble plagues, consuming staggering amounts of crops in their path.</p>



<p>To put this into perspective, a swarm covering just one square kilometer can eat enough food in a single day to feed 35,000 people.</p>



<p>This destruction severely impacts smallholder farmers, who rely on their crops for food and income. Regions like Africa and Asia, where food security is already fragile, are especially vulnerable. The loss of crops not only disrupts local economies but also threatens millions with hunger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-locust-swarms-are-becoming-more-frequent">Locust swarms are becoming more frequent </h2>



<p>The problem is worsening due to climate change. Increased cyclones and heavy rainfall, driven by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-are-in-a-race-against-time-to-save-our-food-supply-from-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>, create ideal breeding conditions for locusts. These events bring moisture to arid regions, encouraging vegetation growth that provides food for locusts. </p>



<p>As a result, locust outbreaks are becoming more frequent and severe, posing an even greater threat to food security in vulnerable regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-locust-swarms-in-advance">Predicting locust swarms in advance</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> have developed a predictive model to tackle locust swarms.</p>



<p>Using weather forecast data from the UK <a href="https://www.metoffice.gov.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Met Office</a> and computational models of locust behavior, the system predicts where swarms will move in their search for food and breeding sites. The results enable early interventions, such as targeted pesticide applications.</p>



<p>"During a desert locust outbreak, we can now predict where swarms will go several days in advance, so we can control them at particular sites," said Dr. Renata Retkute, the lead researcher from Cambridge’s Department of Plant Sciences. </p>



<p>"And if they're not controlled at those sites, we can predict where they'll go next so preparations can be made there."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-era-of-locust-control">New era of locust control</h2>



<p>Until now, locust swarm predictions have been inconsistent. The researchers’ model represents a shift toward more effective responses. </p>



<p>By integrating real-time data on locust lifecycles, breeding behaviors, and weather patterns, the model offers both short- and long-term predictions.</p>



<p>"The important thing is to respond quickly if there's likely to be a big locust upsurge, before it causes a major crop loss. Huge swarms can lead to really desperate situations where people could starve," said Professor Chris Gilligan, senior author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-from-past-locust-swarms">Lessons from past locust swarms</h2>



<p>The urgency of this innovation stems from a massive locust upsurge from 2019 to 2021, which stretched from Kenya to India.</p>



<p>This event devastated key crops like wheat, maize, and sugarcane, leaving many communities struggling. The response was hampered by disjointed information, revealing the need for a comprehensive model.</p>



<p>"The response to the last locust upsurge was very ad-hoc, and less efficient than it could have been. We've created a comprehensive model that can be used next time to control this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-dramatically-increases-the-threat-of-desert-locusts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">devastating</a> pest," said Retkute.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-tested-and-reliable-tool">A tested and reliable tool</h2>



<p>The new model has undergone rigorous testing using surveillance and weather data from the 2019-2021 upsurge. It now stands ready to inform surveillance, early warnings, and management strategies. </p>



<p>The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (<a href="https://www.fao.org/home/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAO</a>) and national agencies will use it to improve preparedness and response.</p>



<p>"Countries that haven’t experienced a locust upsurge in many years are often ill-prepared to respond, lacking the necessary surveillance teams, aircraft, and pesticides," noted the researchers. </p>



<p>Climate change further complicates the picture, altering the movement and spread of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trillions-of-cicadas-set-to-emerge-in-historic-u-s-invasion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">swarms</a>, making proactive measures like this model essential.</p>



<p>By combining advanced technology and comprehensive data, the predictive model will help mitigate the devastation caused by desert locust swarms. Using this tool,  nations can act quickly and decisively, preventing crop loss and protecting food security for millions of people. </p>

<p>A recent study sheds light on Mars's ancient past, revealing how variations in crustal thickness influenced the planet's magmatic evolution and hydrology.</p>



<p>This research challenges long-standing assumptions about Mars, and suggests that the thick crust under its southern highlands supported granitic magmas and underground aquifers billions of years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-mars-s-dynamic-crust">Evolution of Mars’s dynamic crust</h2>



<p>Led by Cin-Ty Lee of <a href="https://www.rice.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rice University</a>, the study uncovers the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-gravity-pulls-earth-closer-to-the-sun-warming-our-climate-scientists-say/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>’s southern highlands - where crustal thickness reached up to 80 kilometers (50 miles) during the Noachian and early Hesperian periods (3-4 billion years ago).</p>



<p>Advanced thermal modeling revealed that radioactive heating in these thick crustal regions caused partial melting in the lower crust, and produced felsic magmas like granites.</p>



<p>“Our findings indicate that Mars’s crustal processes were far more dynamic than previously thought,” said Lee.</p>



<p>“Not only could thick crust in the southern highlands have generated granitic magmas without plate tectonics, but it also created the thermal conditions for stable groundwater aquifers - reservoirs of liquid water - on a planet we’ve often considered dry and frozen.”</p>



<p>The research team used advanced computer models to simulate the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-water-found-on-mars-would-cover-the-planet-over-one-mile-deep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conditions of the Martian</a> crust during its ancient epochs, focusing on three critical factors: radioactive heat generation, mantle heat flow, and crustal thickness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-granite-formation-on-mars">Granite formation on Mars</h2>



<p>Radioactive elements in the crust naturally decayed, releasing heat over time, while additional warmth from the planet's mantle contributed to heating the crust from below. </p>



<p>In areas where the crust exceeded 50 kilometers (31 miles) in thickness, this combination of factors led to partial melting of the lower crust. This process generated granitic magmas, which are rich in silica.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stable-underground-water-reservoirs">Stable underground water reservoirs </h2>



<p>The heat flow from the thick crust also supported stable underground water reservoirs, or aquifers, beneath a frozen surface layer. These aquifers extended several kilometers below the surface, retaining liquid due to the sustained warmth in the thick crustal regions.</p>



<p>Occasionally, volcanic eruptions or asteroid impacts may have disrupted these underground reservoirs, causing water to emerge onto the surface in episodic flooding events. </p>



<p>The interplay between heat, crust dynamics, and water highlights a much more geologically active and hydrologically dynamic Mars than previously believed. The findings have major implications for the planet’s potential habitability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-granite-on-mars">Significance of granite on Mars</h2>



<p>The research debunks the assumption that granites are unique to Earth’s plate tectonics and water recycling processes. </p>



<p>“Granites aren’t just rocks; they’re geological archives that tell us about a planet’s thermal and chemical evolution,” said Rajdeep Dasgupta. </p>



<p>“On Earth, granites are tied to tectonics and water recycling. The fact that we see evidence for similar magmas on Mars through deep crustal remelting underscores the planet’s complexity and its potential for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mars-became-uninhabitable-after-being-life-supporting-ocean-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hosting life in the past</a>.”</p>



<p>Hidden beneath basaltic flows in the southern highlands, these granites offer crucial insights into Mars’s geological history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-water-and-implications-for-habitability">Ancient water and implications for habitability</h2>



<p>The study suggests that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-curiosity-rover-makes-surprising-find-under-martian-rock-sulfur-crystals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a>’s southern highlands may have been more hospitable to life in the past than scientists once believed.</p>



<p>Granitic magmas formed in these regions of the Martian crust are known to contain elements essential for life, such as potassium and phosphorus.</p>



<p>Additionally, the presence of stable underground water reservoirs beneath the highlands adds another layer when considering potential habitability. These liquid water aquifers, protected beneath a frozen surface layer, could have provided a stable environment for microbial life to exist.</p>



<p>The combination of these factors significantly changes how we view Mars’s potential to support life, offering new insights into the planet’s past environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-roadmap-for-future-exploration">Roadmap for future exploration</h2>



<p>The southern highlands present a promising target for future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marss-space-debris-should-be-regarded-as-historical-artifacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a> missions. Large craters and fractures in this region could expose hidden granitic rocks or ancient water reservoirs. </p>

Mars has granite that contains the elements essential for life

A recent study sheds light on Mars's ancient past, revealing...

<p>Like parents passing down their distinctive nose or eye color to their children, young planets were thought to be formed after inheriting their chemical makeup directly from the swirling disks of gas and dust that gave birth to them. But nature, it seems, had other plans.</p>



<p>A remarkable study led by Chih-Chun "Dino" Hsu, a postdoctoral associate at Northwestern University's Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA), suggests that we still have alot to learn about how planets form.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-front-row-seat-to-planet-formation">Front row seat to planet formation</h2>



<p>Most planets that we find outside of our solar system are already <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-planets-formed-in-the-harsh-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fully formed</a>, with their birth materials long since scattered to the cosmic winds.</p>



<p>That's what makes the PDS 70 system so special. Located 366 million light-years away in the constellation Centaurus, this stellar nursery gives scientists a "front-row seat" to planet formation in action.</p>



<p>The system features two baby gas giants, similar to Jupiter, that are still in their formative years. At just 5 million years old, these planetary toddlers - named PDS 70b and PDS 70c - are still surrounded by their natal disks, the very materials from which they are forming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-surprise-in-a-forming-planet">Chemical surprise in a forming planet </h2>



<p>When the research team studied PDS 70b's atmosphere, they found something unexpected. The ratio of carbon to oxygen didn't match what they saw in the surrounding disk of gas and dust.</p>



<p>"For observational astrophysicists, one widely accepted picture of planet <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planet-formation-new-insights-mechanics-physics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">formation</a> was likely too simplified," said Hsu.</p>



<p>"According to that simplified picture, the ratio of carbon and oxygen gases in a planet's atmosphere should match the ratio of carbon and oxygen gases in its natal disk - assuming the planet accretes materials through gases in its disk. Instead, we found a planet with a carbon and oxygen ratio that is much lower compared to its disk."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faint-planets-next-to-bright-stars">Faint planets next to bright stars </h2>



<p>Studying a planet that is forming next to its bright parent star is no small feat. It's like trying to spot a firefly next to a spotlight.</p>



<p>Jason Wang is an assistant professor at <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> who co-developed the technology used in the study.</p>



<p>"These new tools make it possible to take really detailed spectra of faint objects next to really bright objects. Because the challenge here is there's a really faint planet next to a really bright star. It's hard to isolate the light of the planet in order to analyze its atmosphere," explained Wang.</p>



<p>The experts used specialized photonics technologies to capture the planet's spectrum - which is essentially its chemical fingerprint. This allowed the team to measure the amount of carbon monoxide and water in the atmosphere of PDS 70b, and calculate the ratio of carbon to oxygen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possible-explanations-for-the-mismatch">Possible explanations for the mismatch</h2>



<p>The mismatch between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-giant-planets-form/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet's</a> composition and that of its natal disk poses an interesting puzzle. The research team proposes two possible explanations.</p>



<p>First, the planet might have formed before its disk became enriched with carbon. Think of it like baking a cake. The finished product's ingredients depend on what was available in your kitchen when you started baking - not what you added to your pantry later.</p>



<p>The second possibility involves solid materials. The planet might have grown by absorbing large amounts of ice and dust, not just gas. When these solid materials evaporated, they could have altered the final ratio of carbon to oxygen in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vega-star-system-discovery-forces-us-to-rethink-planet-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet's atmosphere.</a></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-better-understanding-of-planet-formation">A better understanding of planet formation </h2>



<p>This study marks the first time scientists have been able to compare information from an exoplanet, its natal disk, and host star. But it's just the beginning. The team plans to study PDS 70c next, hoping to  understand better how this entire system formed.</p>



<p>"By studying these two planets together, we can understand the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/newborn-planet-is-still-glowing-from-the-heat-of-its-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">system's formation</a> history even better," said Hsu. "But, also, this is just one system. Ideally, we need to identify more of them to better understand how planets form."</p>



<p>This discovery reminds us that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oceans-of-water-vapor-may-be-involved-in-planet-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe</a> often defies our expectations. As we continue to peer deeper into space, we are likely to find more surprises that challenge our understanding of how planetary systems come into existence.</p>

<p>Our teeth, the essential guardians of our oral health, are constantly subjected to the demands of chewing and grinding.</p>



<p>Their outer layer, enamel, is an exceptionally hard substance and the most durable material in the human body. While it provides vital protection, enamel lacks the ability to regenerate or self-repair, unlike other tissues in the body.</p>



<p>Unfortunately, this enamel isn't immune to the ravages of time. A team of researchers has recently explored how enamel morphs with age.</p>



<p>The ultimate goal of the research is to devise ways to maintain the strength and vigor of our teeth for as long as possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teeth-contain-more-fluoride-with-age">Teeth contain more fluoride with age</h2>



<p>The study, led by researchers at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Washington</a> and the <a href="https://www.pnnl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pacific Northwest National Laboratory</a>, scrutinized the atomic makeup of enamel samples taken from the teeth of a 22-year-old and a 56-year-old.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the older tooth harbored increased levels of ion fluoride - an element often added to our drinking water and toothpaste as a protective measure for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tooth-enamel-holds-a-record-of-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">enamel</a>.</p>



<p>The researchers investigated how fluoride integrates into enamel as we journey through life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-teeth-cracks-begin">Where teeth cracks begin</h2>



<p>Study lead author Jack Grimm is a UW doctoral student in materials science and engineering and a doctoral intern at PNNL.</p>



<p>"We know that teeth get more brittle as people age, especially near the very outer surface, which is where cracks start. There are a number of factors behind this - one of which is the composition of the mineral content," said Grimm.</p>



<p>"We're interested in understanding exactly how the mineral content is changing. And if you want to see that, you have to look at the scale of atoms."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microscopic-structure-of-enamel">Microscopic structure of enamel</h2>



<p>Enamel is composed mostly of minerals arranged in microscopic structures ten thousand times tinier than the width of a human hair, which makes it a challenge to study.</p>



<p>Earlier studies were conducted on a larger scale - about a tenth of the size of a human hair - which made it impossible to discern the relative distribution of minerals and organic portions in enamel's crystalline structure.</p>



<p>To investigate the microscopic structure of enamel more deeply, Grimm collaborated with Arun Devaraj, a materials scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Together, they used a sophisticated technique called "atom probe tomography."</p>



<p>This cutting-edge method enabled them to create a 3D map of each atom within a sample, revealing differences in element compositions across three key areas: the nanocrystal core, the shell coating the core, and the space between the shells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-fluoride-as-teeth-age">The role of fluoride as teeth age</h2>



<p>The team found that samples from the older tooth had enhanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/too-much-fluoride-in-tap-water-supply-might-lower-kids-iq-by-few-points/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fluoride</a> levels, predominantly in the shell regions.</p>



<p>Study co-author Cameron Renteria is a postdoctoral researcher in oral health sciences at the University of Washington.</p>



<p>"We are getting exposed to fluoride through our toothpaste and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strict-pfas-limits-will-make-drinking-water-safer-for-100-million-americans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drinking water</a>, and no one has been able to track that in an actual tooth at this scale," said Renteria. "Is that fluoride actually being incorporated over time? Now we're starting to be able to paint that picture."</p>



<p>According to the researchers, the strength of their work lies in its interdisciplinary nature. By combining the expertise of different scientific fields, they were able to uncover fascinating insights.</p>



<p>Going forward, the team plans to investigate how the protein composition of enamel evolves over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-enamel-changes-over-time">How enamel changes over time</h2>



<p>Enamel, though resilient, undergoes subtle but impactful transformations as we age. The study revealed that the mineral composition in older enamel is more compact but also more brittle.</p>



<p>Over the years, cycles of demineralization and remineralization, influenced by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bronze-age-teeth-discovery-highlight-the-evolution-of-the-human-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diet</a> and exposure to fluoride, lead to structural shifts.</p>



<p>Interestingly, these processes primarily affect the outermost shell of enamel’s nanocrystals, where increased fluoride levels were most evident in older teeth. This outer layer, while stronger against acid attacks, becomes more prone to cracks due to its rigid nature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preserving-the-strength-of-teeth">Preserving the strength of teeth </h2>



<p>Such changes highlight the delicate balance between strengthening enamel and preserving its flexibility - a challenge that future dental treatments aim to address.</p>



<p>Dentistry offers a clear recommendation: fluoride and fluoridated products are effective in preventing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-water-fluoridation-still-effective/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tooth decay</a>. But when it comes to how aging influences teeth overall, it seems the jury is still out.</p>



<p>The research highlights a key consideration as we grow older - our teeth may become more brittle, requiring us to chew with greater care.</p>

<p>Research led by Jeremy I. Borjon, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Houston, reveals a fascinating link between heart rate fluctuations and the development of language in infants. </p>



<p>The findings shed light on the complex relationship between physical and cognitive growth in early life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heartbeats-and-infant-speech">Heartbeats and infant speech</h2>



<p>Borjon’s research indicates that a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-hear-far-more-speech-at-home-than-music/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baby's earliest sounds</a> - those sweet coos, babbles, and even laughs - are directly tied to the rhythm of their heart.</p>



<p>These findings not only deepen our understanding of language development but also provide potential insights into early detection of speech and communication disorders.</p>



<p>“Heart rate naturally fluctuates in all mammals, steadily increasing then decreasing in a rhythmic pattern,” explained Borjon.</p>



<p>The study revealed that infants are most likely to vocalize when their heart rate reaches a local peak (maximum) or trough (minimum). The timing of these vocalizations appears to have specific outcomes:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Vocalizations at the peak</strong>: Longer than expected by chance.</li>



<li><strong>Vocalizations before the trough</strong>: More likely to be recognized as words by naïve listeners.</li>
</ul>



<p>This rhythm-driven coordination between heart and speech highlights the role of the autonomic nervous system in early language development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-language-as-a-motor-skill">Language as a motor skill</h2>



<p>While we often think of speech as a cognitive ability, it also depends heavily on motor skills. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/talking-to-babies-in-parentese-boosts-their-language-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Babies</a> must learn to coordinate a complex interplay of muscles across their body to produce recognizable sounds. Borjon’s study emphasizes how heart rate dynamics directly influence this coordination.</p>



<p>"Every sound an infant makes helps their brain and body learn how to coordinate with each other, eventually leading to speech," Borjon said. </p>



<p>By observing 34 infants aged 18 to 27 months, his team measured 2,708 vocalizations, including laughs, babbles, and coos. Despite their limited vocabulary, some of these sounds were recognized as words by listeners, illustrating the early building blocks of language.</p>



<p>Notably, only 10.3% of the vocalizations were reliably identified as words, highlighting the gradual process of language acquisition. Yet every sound, whether or not it forms a word, plays a crucial role in helping infants align their physiological and neurological systems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-infant-speech-development">Infant speech development</h2>



<p>The autonomic nervous system (ANS), responsible for regulating involuntary functions like heart rate and breathing, undergoes rapid growth during a baby’s first few years. </p>



<p>The research from <a href="https://uh.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Houston</a> suggests that this development directly impacts an infant's ability to produce recognizable speech.</p>



<p>“The relationship between recognizable vocalizations and decelerating heart rate may imply that the successful development of speech partially depends on infants experiencing predictable ranges of autonomic activity through development,” explained Borjon.</p>



<p>The interplay between predictable heart rate patterns and vocalizations highlights a foundational aspect of speech development. As infants grow, their ability to coordinate autonomic functions and vocalizations improves, eventually leading to the production of more complex speech.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-and-implications">Future research and implications</h2>



<p>Borjon emphasizes the need for continued research to better understand how the autonomic nervous system shapes speech development in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baby-talk-sets-the-stage-for-speech-production-in-infants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">infants</a>. </p>



<p>“Understanding how the autonomic nervous system relates to infant vocalizations over development is a critical avenue of future research for understanding how language emerges, as well as risk factors for atypical language development,” he said.</p>



<p>The findings also hold promise for early intervention strategies. By identifying patterns in heart rate and vocalization timing, researchers could potentially detect speech or communication disorders earlier than current methods allow. </p>



<p>This proactive approach could help provide timely support for children at risk of language delays.</p>

<p>Those massive storms that drench the West Coast aren't going to stay the same. Recent research shows that climate change will reshape atmospheric rivers - but not in the way you might expect. </p>



<p>While these storms will pack more punch everywhere, their evolution will look quite different in Seattle compared to San Diego.</p>



<p>The findings come from a team at the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR), led by scientists Christine Shields and Hui Li. </p>



<p>Their work reveals how these sky-high rivers of moisture will respond differently to warming, depending on where they make landfall.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-contrasting-impacts-of-atmospheric-rivers">Contrasting impacts of atmospheric rivers</h2>



<p>The changes split the West Coast into two distinct stories. </p>



<p>In Southern California, increasing ocean evaporation will drive the transformation of atmospheric rivers. Head north to Seattle and Portland, and it's a different ball game - there, warmer temperatures in both the ocean and air will call the shots.</p>



<p>These differences matter. By 2100, storms hitting the Pacific Northwest could push ocean waters three times higher than today's storms do. Southern California will see higher storm surges too, but not nearly as dramatic as their northern neighbors.</p>



<p>"On the ground, people will see a different response between the Southern California coast and the Pacific Northwest," said Shields. "It's not a one-size-fits-all situation. You have these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-rivers-are-shifting-with-global-climate-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regional responses</a> that can be quite different."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-science-behind-the-split">Science behind the split</h2>



<p>The research team relied on advanced computing to understand how climate change will reshape atmospheric rivers. </p>



<p>Using the powerful Derecho supercomputer at the NSF NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center, they ran detailed climate simulations. </p>



<p>The simulations captured atmospheric changes every 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/consecutive-atmospheric-rivers-cause-far-more-damage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean changes</a> every 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), offering high-resolution insights into the behavior of these storms.</p>



<p>The results were surprising. In Southern California, the well-known "Pineapple Express" storms, which transport moisture from Hawaii, are expected to intensify due to increased evaporation from the ocean in a warmer climate. This added evaporation provides more fuel for the storms, making them more powerful.</p>



<p>In the Pacific Northwest, however, the dynamics are different. The storms there will strengthen due to a combination of rising air and ocean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-disrupting-the-seasonal-flow-of-rivers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperatures</a>. These warming effects will amplify the storms' intensity and lead to more dramatic impacts, such as higher sea levels and increased flooding. </p>



<p>This regional variation highlights how atmospheric rivers respond differently to climate change, depending on their location.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-difference-matters">Why the difference matters</h2>



<p>These aren't just academic distinctions. Communities along the entire West Coast need to prepare for stronger storms, but their specific challenges will vary by location. The stakes are high - atmospheric rivers already pack a serious punch.</p>



<p>"Atmospheric rivers are like tropical cyclones in that they pack powerful winds and carry enormous amounts of water that can devastate local infrastructure," noted Shields.</p>



<p>"Communities need to understand how they will change in the future so they can adapt and plan."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-impacts-of-atmospheric-rivers">Additional impacts of atmospheric rivers</h2>



<p>The impacts don't stop when the rain does. These atmospheric rivers leave their mark on the ocean too, stirring up waters and potentially affecting marine ecosystems long after the storms pass.</p>



<p>"The strong winds and precipitation linked to atmospheric rivers can significantly impact the upper ocean, potentially impacting ocean dynamics and ecosystems over larger spatial scales and longer timescales than the present," said Li.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-the-future">Preparing for the future</h2>



<p>This research gives coastal communities crucial information for planning their future. While all regions need to prepare for more intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/projected-atmospheric-rivers-could-drench-east-asia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storms</a>, their specific challenges will depend on location. </p>



<p>Southern California needs to ready itself for storms supercharged by ocean evaporation, while the Pacific Northwest must prepare for even more dramatic changes driven by warming air and seas.</p>



<p>The study was conducted by researchers from <a href="https://ncar.ucar.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF NCAR</a>, <a href="https://www.tamu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas A&amp;M University</a>, and <a href="https://www.psu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pennsylvania State University</a>, with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and NSF.</p>



<p>For West Coast residents, the message is clear: the atmospheric rivers they know today won't be the same ones their children will face. But now, at least, they have a better idea of what's coming their way.</p>

<p>Hydrothermal systems are gateways to some of the most fascinating processes shaping our planet. </p>



<p>The Arctic Ocean’s Polaris hydrothermal field is a site that is rewriting what we know about vent diversity and the role of hydrothermal activity in sustaining life on Earth - and possibly beyond.</p>



<p>Recent studies have revealed a broader range of venting styles than experts had anticipated, recalibrating our understanding of these vents' origins and their larger impact on our oceans and planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-polaris-hydrothermal-field">The Polaris hydrothermal field</h2>



<p>Our story unfolds at the Polaris <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/knipovich-ridge-new-hydrothermal-field-arctic-intense-geological-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrothermal field</a>, located in the Arctic Ocean on the ultraslow-spreading Gakkel Ridge. </p>



<p>Initial studies painted a picture of Polaris as a classic "black smoker" system, caused by its proximity to a volcanic seamount and the temperature and turbidity anomalies in its hydrothermal plume.</p>



<p>But the story of the Polaris field has taken a surprising turn. After comprehensive seafloor surveys and geochemical analyses, scientists discovered that Polaris was not your average black smoker.</p>



<p>Instead, it discharges hydrogen- and methane-enriched fluids into the Arctic Ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hydrothermal-life-more-diverse-than-we-knew">Hydrothermal life: More diverse than we knew</h2>



<p>What's more, the deep-sea hydrothermal plumes detected along ultra-slow spreading mid-ocean ridges have revealed a diversity of venting styles beyond what was previously reported. </p>



<p>According to scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), this expansion of geodiversity has stretched even into the Arctic Ocean, broadening our understanding of the workings of our planet's oceans.</p>



<p>"Hydrogen-rich vents like Polaris have a lot more chemical potential energy available for life than any other kinds of vents," explained Chris German, senior scientist at WHOI. </p>



<p>"The microbial diversity you get when there is that much energy available also is really quite impressive and distinct from most ordinary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/five-new-hydrothermal-vents-discovered-in-the-pacific-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrothermal vents</a>."</p>

<p>"The discoveries we have made here are particularly important because they reassure us that we could go and search for life on other ocean worlds in a credible and meaningful way, based on what we now know," said German.</p>

<p>"The insights we gained from the Polaris hydrothermal system were unexpected, with major implications for hydrothermal exploration in other oceans. We are excited to learn what other surprises the Arctic holds in the future," noted Elmar Albers, a postdoctoral investigator at WHOI.</p>

<p>Unraveling the mysteries of our home planet serves as a stepping stone toward understanding the distribution of life in the universe.</p>



<p>"What we learn here, in the Arctic or anywhere on Earth, is directly applied to our successful exploration at other worlds, like Europa and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-sparking-energy-source-found-on-saturns-moon-enceladus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Enceladus</a>, and beyond," said Becky McCauley Rench, Astrobiology Program Scientist at NASA headquarters.</p>



<p>This study was primarily supported by NASA’s PSTAR program at WHOI and the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. </p>

<p>Has anyone ever told you, "You don't look your age!" While it's usually a flattering compliment for us, it seems this is not just the case for our physical appearance. It turns out, our brains too can look older or younger, and artificial intelligence (AI) is helping us understand why.</p>



<p>In a recent study that bridges artificial intelligence and neuroscience, researchers at Karolinska Institutet have uncovered fascinating insights into brain aging. </p>



<p>The research suggests that the key to maintaining a youthful brain might lie in the health of our blood vessels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-brain-age-matters">Why brain age matters</h2>



<p>With dementia affecting thousands of new patients each year in Sweden alone – over 20,000 to be precise, with Alzheimer's disease accounting for roughly two-thirds of cases – <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-25-years-of-research-revealed-about-brain-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding brain aging</a> has never been more crucial. </p>



<p>This new study offers practical insights into how we might maintain our cognitive health as we age.</p>



<p>The study's innovative approach utilized artificial intelligence to analyze brain images from 739 cognitively healthy 70-year-olds, with women making up slightly more than half of the participant group. </p>



<p>The research team developed a sophisticated AI algorithm that could estimate the biological age of brains from MRI scans.</p>



<p>"The algorithm is both accurate and robust, yet easy to use," explained Professor Eric Westman, the study's principal investigator and professor of Neurogeriatrics at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>.</p>



<p>He noted that while it's currently a research tool requiring further evaluation, the experts hope to eventually implement it in clinical settings, particularly for dementia investigations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vascular-connection-to-brain-age">Vascular connection to brain age</h2>



<p>Perhaps the most striking finding from the study is the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/poor-sleep-habits-may-age-the-brain-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strong connection</a> between vascular health and brain age. </p>



<p>The research team discovered that several factors harmful to blood vessel health were associated with brains that appeared older than the participants' chronological age. These factors included diabetes, previous strokes, cerebral small vessel disease, and inflammation.</p>



<p>"A take-home from the study is that factors that adversely affect the blood vessels can also be related to older-looking brains, which shows how important it is to keep your blood vessels healthy, to protect your brain, by making sure, for instance, that your blood glucose level is kept stable," noted study lead author Anna Marseglia.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-lifestyle-choices">Power of lifestyle choices</h2>



<p>The research wasn't all about risk factors – it also revealed some encouraging news about the power of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">healthy lifestyle choices</a>.</p>



<p> Regular exercise emerged as a significant factor associated with younger-looking brains, suggesting that staying physically active might be one of our best defenses against cognitive aging.</p>



<p>This finding is particularly important because it emphasizes that we have some control over our brain's aging process. </p>



<p>While we can't change our genetics or completely prevent all health conditions, we can make lifestyle choices that promote better vascular health and, by extension, better brain health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sex-based-differences-in-brain-aging">Sex-based differences in brain aging</h2>



<p>Intriguingly, the study uncovered potential sex-based differences in brain aging. </p>



<p>The research team found that factors contributing to older- or younger-looking <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/financial-decisions-are-not-as-reliable-in-the-aging-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brains</a> varied between men and women, suggesting that the pathways to building brain resilience might differ between sexes.</p>



<p>This discovery has prompted further research initiatives. </p>



<p>"Next year, we'll launch a study to understand how social health – including social engagement, connectedness, and support – in middle and older age, along with sleep and stress, influence brain resilience, with a focus on women's health factors," said Marseglia.</p>

<p>The timing of this research is particularly significant. </p>



<p>"Despite the recent introduction of new Alzheimer's drugs, they will not work for everyone with dementia, so we want to study what can boost the brain's resilience against pathological aging processes," notes Marseglia.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cellular-changes-and-microbiome-shifts">Cellular changes and microbiome shifts</h2>



<p>The Stanford research revealed that these aging bursts affect our microbiome – the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in and on our bodies. <p>Snyder emphasized the importance of proactive health measures. "I'm a big believer that we should try to adjust our lifestyles while we're still healthy," he noted. This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>"Your brain is essentially learning to override its own reflexes," Kilteni explained in her review of tickling research.</p>

<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
