<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>Meat production has become a focal point in the fight against climate change, with some proposals calling for drastic cuts by wealthier nations. But is such an extreme approach necessary to make a meaningful impact?</p>



<p>New insights suggest that carefully tailored strategies could help tackle climate change effectively without major lifestyle overhauls. The research was led by experts in the <a href="https://as.nyu.edu/departments/environment.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Environmental Studies</a> at New York University.</p>



<p>The team found that by achieving a moderate reduction in meat production, we could potentially keep 125 billion tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. This figure exceeds the total number of global fossil fuel emissions from the past three years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-win-for-forests-and-climate">A win for forests and climate</h2>



<p>A slight pullback in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breakthrough-could-slash-meat-production-expenses-by-90-percent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meat production</a>, particularly in higher-income countries, could have profound effects on the climate.</p>



<p>The researchers suggest a cutback of around 13% of total meat production could free up vast tracts of land earlier earmarked for cattle grazing, allowing for natural regrowth of forests.</p>



<p>Why <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/single-degree-temperature-warming-boreal-forests-wreak-havoc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a>? Trees are nature’s best carbon absorbers. The return of forests on these lands could drastically reduce fossil fuel emissions. </p>



<p>"Globally, ruminant grazing - including cattle for beef production - is the most extensive human land use. Removing cattle from pastures represents a meaningful opportunity to sequester carbon into regrowing vegetation and soils," wrote the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meat-reduction-and-climate-change">Meat reduction and climate change </h2>



<p>"We can achieve enormous climate benefits with modest changes to the total global beef production," said study lead author Matthew N. Hayek.</p>



<p>"By focusing on regions with potentially high carbon sequestration in forests, some restoration strategies could maximize climate benefits while minimizing changes to food supplies."</p>



<p>The study suggests that pasturelands, particularly those which were formerly forests, could immensely aid in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-still-fighting-climate-change-against-all-odds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fighting climate change</a>. </p>



<p>Removing livestock from these “potential native forest” areas could allow ecosystems to naturally revert to their original forested state, hence storing carbon in trees and soil.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wealthy-nations-and-meat-production">Wealthy nations and meat production </h2>



<p>The researchers see wealthier nations as suitable candidates for reducing meat production to combat climate change. Their current pasture areas yield little grass per acre or only during a short growing season, making climate-focused strategies more feasible.</p>



<p>In contrast, these areas could potentially nurture sprawling, verdant forests which act as efficient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-air-pollution-could-greatly-boost-carbon-sequestration-by-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sequestration</a> sites.</p>



<p>This approach is distinct from that taken by regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and South America, where lush pastures grow year-round, hence providing more food per acre for animals. </p>



<p>The research team sees potential in these lower-income regions to increase <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/livestock-production-could-be-hit-hard-by-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">livestock</a> feeding efficiency on grass, thereby compensating for the slight dip in meat production by wealthier nations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tailoring-meat-reduction-by-region">Tailoring meat reduction by region</h2>



<p>The team also found potential to immensely mitigate climate change effects by broadening the scope of restoration.</p>



<p>The researchers discovered that eliminating grazing livestock from all potentially forested areas worldwide could sequester a staggering 445 gigatons of CO2 by the end of this century. </p>



<p>This amount of carbon sequestration is equivalent to over a decade of global fossil fuel emissions. However, Hayek emphasizes that this approach needs to be tailored to individual regions.</p>



<p>"Our findings show that strategic improvements in the efficiency of cattle herds in some areas, coupled with decreased production in others, could lead to a win-win scenario for climate and food production," said Hayek.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meat-reduction-supports-climate-goals">Meat reduction supports climate goals</h2>



<p>The authors also emphasized that restoration efforts should not replace endeavors to reduce fossil fuel emissions. Instead, these efforts should work hand in hand to fight climate change.</p>



<p>“In many places, this regrowth could occur by seeds naturally dispersing and trees regrowing without any human involvement,” noted Hayek.</p>



<p>Swift action is needed to meet climate goals, and ecosystem restoration on converted pasturelands is a critical part of these plans.</p>



<p>"Our study’s findings could offer paths forward for policymakers aiming to address both climate mitigation and food security concerns," concluded Hayek.</p>



<p>In a time when many countries are committing to ambitious reforestation targets, balancing meat production with climate mitigation efforts becomes paramount. This research nudges us closer to that equilibrium.</p>

Meat reductions could cut billions of tons of CO2 emissions

<p>When we look around, it's not difficult to see the myriad ways nature contributes to our existence. The value of nature, though, goes far beyond what meets the eye - offering solutions with benefits that are often overlooked.</p>



<p>That's the extraordinary revelation from a group of researchers at the University of Oxford. The experts examined the economic ramifications of nature-based solutions (NbS) and what they discovered is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-based-solutions">Nature-based solutions</h2>



<p>The researchers found that adopting nature-based solutions could help local economies flourish by boosting agricultural yields and creating job opportunities. It's a secret formula: the more we <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-must-live-in-harmony-with-nature-to-create-a-sustainable-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work with nature</a>, the more prosperity we unlock.</p>



<p>But there's an added bonus. Nature-based solutions don't just lead to a surge in wealth and jobs. They can also pave the way for "win-win" situations, such as increased income and job creation, while simultaneously promoting biodiversity and supporting climate adaptation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revving-up-local-economies">Revving up local economies </h2>



<p>The study cites several compelling instances of how NbS has been a game-changer. One example is the Working for Water (WfW) program in South Africa. </p>



<p>This initiative successfully rid over 1 million hectares of land of invasive species while providing employment for more than 20,000 people. </p>



<p>Similarly, a coastal restoration project in the United States ended up creating 17 jobs for every million dollars spent.</p>



<p>"The evidence also shows NbS can be deployed with speed and flexibility in areas where they are needed the most, like rural communities that are often neglected by other investment approaches," noted Alex Chausson, lead author of the study.</p>



<p>Chausson, a specialist in nature-based solutions at WWF-UK and a research associate at Oxford's Nature-Based Solutions Initiative (NbSI), further emphasized the significance of these solutions in revving up local economies and aiding recovery in the aftermath of crises.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-than-meets-the-eye">More than meets the eye</h2>



<p>"Nature's value is often overlooked in accounting frameworks, yet our study highlights its tremendous economic benefits," said Nathalie Seddon, a professor of biodiversity at the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a></p>



<p>"At a time when global systems are under strain and the planet is warming, nature-based solutions offer a vital opportunity to boost the resilience of ecosystems - and the economies that depend on them. However, our study sheds light on its tremendous economic benefits."</p>



<p>Despite these advantages, the researchers identified several obstacles standing in the way of NbS implementation. </p>



<p>These obstacles include siloed governmental decision-making, widespread misconceptions that pro-environmental policies can harm business, and scant reporting on the broader impacts of NbS projects.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-as-a-solution-for-broader-impact">Nature as a solution for broader impact</h2>



<p>"Right now, when a government makes an investment in nature, all too often they are failing to look at the wider impact that investment is having," explained Chausson.</p>



<p>"The immediate impact of restored woodland on biodiversity might be monitored, for example, but the broader benefits of the project on jobs or the resilience of the local community to climate change will not be. If these aspects are considered, it will lead to better policy decisions."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-way-forward">The way forward</h2>



<p>Dr. Brian O'Callaghan, co-author of the study and project manager at the University of Oxford, agrees that well thought out investments in nature can create jobs, spur high economic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-predict-how-and-when-humans-and-mammals-will-face-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">productivity</a>, and enhance resilience, offering a robust response to economic shocks.</p>



<p>However, he recommends caution to ensure key stakeholders are not left behind and to avoid any unforeseen negative externalities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-based-solutions-are-essential">Nature based solutions are essential</h2>



<p>The crucial factor, according to study co-author Alison Smith, is following best practice standards for NbS to ensure benefits are delivered in practice.</p>



<p>"We found that&nbsp;community involvement&nbsp;in NbS design and delivery was a key factor for making sure that benefits are distributed fairly, and helping to avoid trade-offs," said Smith.</p>



<p>"Integrating traditional, local and&nbsp;scientific knowledge&nbsp;can also really help to improve the outcomes of NbS for both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-the-critical-role-of-nature-in-human-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nature</a> and people."</p>



<p>The conclusion? Nature-based solutions are not just beneficial; they are essential. And the road to prosperity may well be paved with natural wonders. .</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-time-travel-to-the-quebrada-honda-basin">Time travel to the Quebrada Honda basin</h2>



<p>Over a decade and a half, a global team from <a href="https://case.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Case Western Reserve University</a> studied an archaeological site in Bolivia-Quebrada Honda Basin (QHB).</p>



<p>Situated in the Andes, this area offers us a glimpse into a time period from 13 million years ago, during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-site-in-australia-indicates-abundant-life-during-the-miocene/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Miocene Epoch</a> - a time when Earth's climate recovered from the previous era's cooling, causing a surge in global temperatures and mammal biodiversity.</p>



<p>During the Miocene epoch, the Earth was warmer by 3-4 degrees Celsius compared to today. Drawing parallels between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-sea-creatures-built-ecosystems-that-diversified-ocean-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient ecosystems</a> and our current climate change predicament can enlighten us about possible future scenarios.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-climate-clues-for-a-sustainable-future">Ancient climate clues for a sustainable future</h2>



<p>Darin Croft, a professor of anatomy at Case Western Reserve's School of Medicine, and the team leader of the QHB research, believes that ancient sites such as QHB are instrumental in calibrating climate models. </p>



<p>"Our understanding of climate change is based on models, and those models are based on information from the past. We are getting into uncharted territory in terms of climate, and you have to go deeper in time to get conditions that are similar," said Professor Croft.</p>



<p>Initially, the QHB site was lower than its current altitude of 11,500 feet (3,500 meters). However, the exact elevation during the Miocene epoch has been hotly debated among scientists.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-climate-and-rich-biodiversity">Ancient climate and rich biodiversity </h2>



<p>The research team discovered various types of fossils at the QHB site, ranging from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammal-evolution-kicked-off-with-daring-experiments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mammal</a> bones and teeth, plant remains, ancient soils, and even the tracks of insects and other invertebrates. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-will-climate-change-impact-cold-blooded-animals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cold-blooded</a> animals - including a giant tortoise, a side-necked turtle, and a large snake - suggest that QHB's elevation during their existence was less than 1,000 meters, based on the current habitats of closely related species.</p>



<p>The researchers determined that the QHB was a dry forest or a wooded savanna with palms and bamboo, both of which thrive at lower altitudes. This ecosystem shared no parallels with any modern landscapes.</p>



<p>Caroline Strömberg, a biology professor at the University of Washington, examined fossilized phytoliths - microscopic silica particles found in plant cell walls, which are characteristic of the vegetation types they're from.</p>



<p>She compared these with those found in present vegetation to identify the mix of plants at the QHB site.</p>



<p>"Magnifying" the past, the team even discovered 13 previously unknown mammal species, including marsupials, hoofed mammals, rodents, and armadillos. </p>



<p>"Nature has a wide variety of body plans, often much greater than the limited variety we see today," said Russell Engelman, a Case Western Reserve biology graduate student.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-long-lasting-legacy">A long-lasting legacy</h2>



<p>Between 2007 and 2017, Professor Croft led six international teams to the QHB site with the primary funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF).</p>



<p>Six years after the team's second NSF grant ended, the research findings continue to be relevant, inspiring follow-up data and publications.</p>



<p>"Field paleontology is a really good investment for the NSF, because the dividends far outweigh the costs," said Professor Croft. His team now seeks funding to study another Miocene site in Bolivia, of a similar age but over a longer time-period.</p>

<p>Wondering how your favorite <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/health-risks-of-ultra-processed-foods-revealed-in-30-year-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">snacks</a> come into the picture? A study by the <a href="https://www.lum.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LUM University</a> of Casamassima has revealed a chilling link between high consumption of ultra-processed foods and hastened biological aging.</p>



<p>Ultra-processed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/minimally-processed-foods-cost-more-offer-no-extra-nutrition/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods</a> seem like the villains in our story, right? But what do they look like? You'd be surprised to know that your daily diet might be full of them.</p>



<p>Ever heard of hydrogenated fats, maltodextrins, or hydrolyzed proteins? These are the unfamiliar substances that make up the ultra-processed foods we chow down without a second thought.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-aging-on-the-fast-track">Biological aging on the fast track</h2>



<p>Digging into a vast pool of data involving 22,000 participants from the Moli-sani Study, the researchers found that consuming high amounts of ultra-processed foods fast-tracks biological aging.</p>



<p>Essentially, if your meals are full of these foods, your biological clock might be sprinting ahead of your chronological age.</p>



<p>"Our data show that a high consumption of ultra-processed foods not only has a negative impact on health in general, but could also accelerate aging itself, suggesting a connection that goes beyond the poor nutritional quality of these foods," said study first author Simona Esposito.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-foods-that-damage-human-health">Foods that damage human health</h2>



<p>Marialaura Bonaccio, a nutritional epidemiologist at the Research Unit of Epidemiology and Prevention-IRCCS Neuromed, elaborated on why these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/toddlers-get-half-their-calories-from-ultra-processed-foods/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foods can be harmful</a>.</p>



<p>She noted that the mechanisms through which ultra-processed foods can be harmful to human health are not yet entirely clear.</p>



<p>"Besides being nutritionally inadequate, being rich in sugars, salt and saturated or trans fats, these foods undergo intense industrial processing that actually alters their food matrix, with the consequent loss of nutrients and fiber," said Bonaccio.</p>



<p>"This can have important consequences for a series of physiological functions, including glucose metabolism, and the composition and functionality of the gut microbiota. Also, these products are often wrapped in plastic packaging, thus becoming vehicles of substances toxic to the body."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-dietary-directions">Rethinking dietary directions</h2>



<p>Should this study be a wake-up call to reevaluate our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ultra-processed-foods-like-soda-and-snacks-are-the-new-silent-killer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dietary</a> guidelines? </p>



<p>“This study prompts us once again to reevaluate the current dietary recommendations, that should also include warnings on limiting the intake of ultra-processed food in our daily diet," said Professor Licia Iacoviello.</p>



<p>"Actually, some nutrient-dense packaged foods can be classified as ultra-processed, and this suggest the need of guiding people towards dietary choices that address also the degree of food processing”.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-processed-food-consumption">Cutting processed food consumption</h2>

Ultra-processed foods make our bodies age faster

<p>Human activities have left their imprints in the farthest reaches of our planet. In a recent study, experts revealed that some of the world's most isolated regions have not escaped the footprint of lead pollution.</p>



<p>Even the frosty wilderness of northwestern Tibet stands witness to the impacts of human activities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-of-lead-pollution">Origins of lead pollution</h2>



<p>Examining the Guliya ice cap in northwestern Tibet, researchers detected the presence of lead. Who invited this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-alters-the-atmosphere-in-the-remote-arctic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unexpected guest</a> here?</p>



<p>The answer lies in human activities that took place during and after the Industrial Revolution. Ice core samples dating back to this transitional time period lay bare the increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-arctic-ice-weakens-the-strength-of-el-nino-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lead levels</a>.</p>



<p>However, it was 1974 - the year when U.S. environmental regulations came into force – that marked a significant change in the sources of lead. Despite a drop in certain types of gasoline use, other lead sources remained prevalent.</p>



<p>"We measured the lead isotopic composition in a dusty ice core from the Guliya ice cap in northwest Tibet, from approximately 36 thousand years Before Present (Stone Age) to 2015, to determine the onset and sources of anthropogenic lead," explained the study authors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-lead-pollution">Tracing lead pollution</h2>



<p>Roxana Sierra-Hernandez was the lead author of the study and a senior research associate at <a href="https://www.osu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ohio State University</a>’s Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. </p>



<p>Through her profound research, Sierra-Hernandez was able to trace anthropogenic lead right back to its origin and highlight the indelible mark they left on the region.</p>



<p>“Our lead isotope samples date to about 36,000 years ago, a time when we know that no civilizations at the time were using lead - meaning that much of what we found is natural,” Sierra-Hernandez said.</p>



<p>“Now with this work, we can pinpoint anthropogenic lead and when they left a mark in the region.”</p>



<p>Millions of people depend on Tibetan glaciers for their water, but these life-sustaining sources are at risk due to global warming. As glaciers retreat, they not only reduce water levels but also release the pollutants trapped within them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-sources-of-pollution">Hidden sources of pollution </h2>



<p>“Depending on the amount of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ozone-pollution-is-stunting-tropical-forest-growth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a> there is in the environment, it sinks into these glaciers,” Sierra-Hernandez said. “If a glacier melts, that source of pollution can leak into nearby rivers.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>While some lead originates from the Earth’s crust, a significant proportion is a result of human activities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-hazards-of-lead-exposure">Health hazards of lead Exposure</h2>



<p>Long-term exposure to lead is detrimental to human health. Its adverse effects span from causing health anomalies like cancer and cardiovascular diseases to fertility issues. </p>



<p>Hence, understanding the baseline of natural lead levels is pivotal for gauging humanity's environmental impact and preparing for its consequences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinguishing-pollution-sources">Distinguishing pollution sources</h2>



<p>The instruments used in this study provided powerful insights which allowed the scientists to identify the type of pollution each lead trace came from.</p>



<p>The researchers were surprised to find that until 2007, Chinese gasoline was the primary lead source before its emissions decreased and those from coal and lead-zinc ores began to increase.</p>



<p>This evolution of lead sources during the last few centuries offers critical insights into how local pollution can be distributed globally. It is a challenge that goes beyond the capacity of any single country.</p>



<p>“Politicians need to be conscious enough to see that lead is still a concern and make policies that avoid emitting more of it, whether it’s from sources of coal or gasoline,” said Sierra-Hernandez.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-implications-of-the-research">Future implications of the research </h2>



<p>Lead isotopes can act as unique markers for tracking and investigating pollution sources. This could open avenues for future studies looking to analyze and compare contaminated ice core samples from other glaciers globally. </p>



<p>“Future studies can build on this study to compare modern and ancient pollution trends and better identify sources due to human activities,” Sierra-Hernandez said. “It’s important to do more lead isotope studies. It’s hard and it’s time-consuming, but there’s so much to learn.”</p>



<p>Such scientific pursuits are integral to untangling the complex web of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alpine-glaciers-will-lose-half-of-their-volume-by-2050/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental issues</a> plaguing our planet. Lead pollution has made its way to the top of the world

<p>For years, baseball’s “magic” mud has been a thing of mystery. Its remarkable traits have never been formally examined or scientifically accounted for.</p>



<p>Although it may seem like an extra player on the field, the precise role of this mud in enhancing the performance of Major League Baseball (MLB) games has been more of a riddle than a fact. A new study finally sheds light on this compelling enigma.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-baseball-s-magic-mud">Baseball's magic mud</h2>



<p>For the first time, scientists from the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science (Penn Engineering) and School of Arts &amp; Sciences (SAS) have investigated the dynamics of this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/youth-sports-are-more-accessible-to-privileged-families/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baseball</a> staple.</p>



<p>Their findings, published in <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em> (PNAS), reveal why the baseball mud is truly "magical."</p>



<p>"It spreads like a skin cream and grips like sandpaper," said Shravan Pradeep, the primary author of the paper and a dedicated researcher in the labs of Professor Douglas J. Jerolmack and Professor Paulo Arratia.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-of-baseball-s-magic-mud">Origins of baseball's magic mud</h2>



<p>The magic mud, applied by each team’s equipment manager to every game ball in the MLB, is harvested by the Bintliff family in an undisclosed location in South Jersey. </p>



<p>This ritual has been repeated for generations, a guarded secret and cherished tradition in the world of baseball.</p>



<p>In 2019, the research group was prompted by sportswriter Matthew Gutierrez to explore the composition and flow characteristics of the mud. Though they were able to provide a quick analysis, it did not live up to the standards of scientific proof, admits Professor Jerolmack.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-superstition-or-science">Superstition or science?</h2>



<p>Plenty of articles and reports have cited the alleged effects of the magic mud. In interviews with everyone from MLB players to the Bintliffs themselves, people have gushed about the mud.</p>



<p>But the scientific community did not have any empirical evidence to back these claims. The burning question remained: Is the use of this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sand-dunes-hold-a-record-of-fire-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mud</a> mere superstition or is there a genuine scientific rationale behind it?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-investigation-of-baseball-s-magic-mud">Investigation of baseball's magic mud</h2>



<p>This gap in knowledge prompted Professor Pradeep to devise a triple-threat scientific investigation into baseball's magic mud. He set up three experiments to measure its spreadability, stickiness, and its effect on baseballs' friction against fingertips.</p>



<p>The team had to go to great lengths, even inventing new experimental setups, to sufficiently mimic the properties of human fingers and accurately capture the mud's behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-verdict-magic-mud-works">The verdict: Magic mud works</h2>



<p>The artificial skin and the oil they used simulated natural finger conditions, helping them align the tests as closely as possible to real-life scenarios. </p>



<p>All of these efforts paid off when their study confirmed what MLB players have been professing all along: the magic mud works, and it's not just a superstition akin to playoff beards and rally caps.</p>



<p>This study has also debunked the idea of replacing the magic mud with synthetic lubricants - a concept that was previously explored by the MLB.</p>



<p>The original mud’s unique properties have so far proven to be irreplaceable. The researchers suggest sticking with the natural, green, and sustainable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sand-and-dust-storms-have-become-unpredictable-and-dangerous/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mud</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-touch-of-sustainability">Touch of sustainability</h2>



<p>Despite this study focusing on baseball, the implications of the findings extend much further. The research opens up possibilities in the sustainable use of natural materials as lubricants.</p>



<p>The study serves as a window for us to appreciate how the natural world offers some invaluable properties that are hard to recreate from scratch.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>The researchers extend their gratitude towards the various agencies that supported their work. </p>



<p>These agencies include the National Science Foundation (<a href="https://www.nsf.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF</a>), NASA, Army Research Office, Penn Center for Soft and Living Matter, the University of Pennsylvania’s Singh Center for Nanotechnology, and others.</p>



<p>"We found that the mud contains just the right mixture of clay and water to uniformly coat the baseballs with an adhesive residue, and just enough sand grains to enhance friction," wrote the study authors.</p>



<p>"Understanding these remarkable properties may expand the use of sustainable natural materials for lubrication and gripping applications."</p>

For years, baseball’s “magic” mud has been a thing of...

<p>Do you think you know your own body well? As it turns out, we might not know ourselves as intimately as we may think. Humans consistently underestimate how far many of our body parts can bend.</p>



<p>Yes, our brains don't seem to accurately gauge our body's movement limits. The mind-boggling details of this study are brought to you by Dr. Artur Pilacinski, a neuroscientist at Ruhr University Bochum.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mind-blowing-body-bending">Mind-blowing body bending</h2>



<p>Now, let's delve into the heart of the matter. The fundamental concept at play here is the 'body schema' - our brain's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-perception-we-see-the-world-based-on-what-we-expect-to-see/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mental representation</a> of our bodily self. </p>



<p>“Previous studies by other groups have already shown that people have a distorted body schema,” explains Pilacinski. </p>



<p>“For example, they systematically underestimate the weight or size of their hands. We were interested in whether there is a similar bias for body movements.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wrist-movements">Wrist movements</h2>



<p>Dr. Pilacinski, along with Antoine Vandenberghe, Gabriella Andrietta, and Professor Gilles Vannuscorps, conducted an intriguing experiment. The team asked 84 participants to anticipate how far they could move their hand in various directions. </p>



<p>This estimation involved wrist movements in four different ways: inwards and outwards towards the forearm and tilting the wrist towards the thumb or the pinkie.</p>



<p>The participants were divided into two groups. Some were asked to mentally visualize the hand movements and then indicate on an angular ruler the extent they thought they could move their hand. </p>



<p>The others were shown various positions on the same ruler and had to decide if they could reach those positions by bending their wrists. The actual wrist mobility of all participants was then measured.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-underestimated-reality-of-body-bending">Underestimated reality of body bending</h2>



<p>After crunching the numbers, the researchers found something truly eye-opening. </p>



<p>For three out of the four movements, there was a significant disparity between the assumed and actual mobility. On average, participants underguessed their movement scope by at least ten degrees. </p>



<p>The only exception? The movement towards the thumb, whose difference between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-we-recognize-wisdom-in-people/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">presumption</a> and reality was too slight to be measured using their methodology.</p>



<p>Now, what could the reasons behind this discrepancy be? </p>



<p>Dr. Pilacinski and his team suggest that this bias might serve as a protective mechanism - keeping us from overstretching and potentially harming our muscles, tendons, and ligaments. </p>



<p>You have to appreciate the irony of this situation: our underestimate of body flexibility actually serves to keep us flexibly operational!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neuroscience-and-physical-therapy">Neuroscience and physical therapy</h2>



<p>The findings from <a href="http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ruhr University</a> and the <a href="https://uclouvain.be/en/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Université catholique de Louvain</a>, Belgium, offer profound implications for both neuroscience and the field of physical therapy.</p>

<p>Adding these essential fats to your diet can offer a bunch of health benefits. They may help reduce the risk of heart disease, support mental health, and even give your skin a healthy glow.</p>



<p>And now, recent research from the <a href="https://www.uga.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Georgia</a> has discovered an interesting relationship between these superheroes of nutrition and a reduced risk of cancer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-omega-fatty-acids-lower-cancer-risk">Omega fatty acids lower cancer risk</h2>



<p>In this riveting investigation, data from a whopping 250,000 individuals underwent scrutiny. The outcome? </p>



<p>There was a noticeable association between higher levels of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/omega-3-oil-may-help-protect-pollinators-from-pesticides/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Omega-3</a> and Omega-6 fatty acids and a lessened probability of cancer development. </p>



<p>“Higher omega-3 and omega-6 levels were associated with lower rates of cancer,” said <a href="https://publichealth.uga.edu/student/yuchen-zhang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yuchen Zhang</a>, lead author of the study and a doctoral student in UGA’s <a href="https://publichealth.uga.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">College of Public Health</a>. </p>



<p>“These findings suggest that the average person should focus on getting more of these fatty acids in their diets.”</p>

<p>The study didn't merely sketch a broad connection; it hinted at a protective influence of fatty acids across diverse cancer types. </p>



<p>Individuals boasting elevated levels of Omega-3 were seen to have fewer occurrences of colon, stomach, lung, and sundry other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/western-diet-identified-as-major-cause-of-colon-cancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">digestive tract cancers</a>.</p>



<p>Omega-6, too, showed its mettle by being linked with diminished rates of a staggering 14 distinct kinds of cancer, a spectrum that includes everything from brain cancer to bladder cancer, and even malignant melanoma.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adding-healthy-fats-to-our-diet">Adding healthy fats to our diet</h2>



<p>Often crowned as "healthy fats," Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are integral to our diets. Their natural habitat includes fatty <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-power-of-fish-oil-in-combating-high-cholesterol/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a>, nuts, and certain plant oils like canola oil. </p>



<p>Yet, they might not be frequent guests on the American dinner table, leading many people to seek their benefits via <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-oil-lowers-alzheimers-risk-in-people-who-are-most-susceptible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish oil supplements</a>.</p>



<p>Fish oil supplements have captured the limelight over the years due to their spectrum of health benefits. Apart from their potential in battling cancer, they're documented to slash the risk of high cholesterol and heart disease.</p>



<p>Although supplements can be beneficial, nutritionists emphasize the importance of obtaining these essential fatty acids through a varied diet rich in natural sources. </p>

<p>The study also hinted that omega-6 had a more pronounced beneficial impact on younger participants, particularly women.</p>

Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids may reduce cancer risk

There's no denying that a balanced diet is your ticket...

<p>The Big Bang theory describes a mind-blowing event that took place around 14 billion years ago. The observable universe expanded from the size of a minuscule bacterium to the mammoth dimensions of the Milky Way, all within a fraction of a second. </p>



<p>According to currently accepted theory, this early universe was a hot, dense environment. So, how do we know this massive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-observations-disprove-big-bang-theory-universe-began-tired-light-theory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic event</a> actually happened?</p>



<p>Much of what we know comes from evidence collected in the last century. In the late 1920s, American astronomer Edwin Hubble found that galaxies are moving away from each other, leading to the idea that our universe is always expanding. </p>



<p>If we <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-dark-matter-does-not-exist-and-the-universe-is-27-billion-years-old/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trace this expansion back</a>, we discover a universe that is as old as the oldest astronomical objects we see.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-believers-and-skeptics-of-big-bang-theory">Believers and skeptics of Big Bang theory</h2>



<p>Initially, this radical idea was met with skepticism. Interestingly, it was a skeptic, an Englishman named Fred Hoyle, who facetiously dubbed this hypothesis as the "Big Bang" during a <a href="https://www.bbc.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BBC</a> radio interview in 1949.</p>



<p>The tune of skepticism began to change when, in 1964, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson detected cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation -- an afterglow of the Big Bang that filled all space.</p>



<p>This discovery, which earned them the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physics, opened a window into the hot, dense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gravitational-waves-dark-matter-big-bang-breakthrough/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beginning of our universe</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-first-moments-after-the-big-bang">First moments after the Big Bang</h2>



<p>Over the years, experiments at particle accelerators like the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Large Hadron Collider</a> have shed light on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/origins-of-matter-discovered-by-recreating-the-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conditions that existed</a> closer to the time of the Big Bang.</p>



<p>Our understanding of physics at these high energies suggests that the four fundamental forces of physics we recognize now were initially unified as a single force.</p>



<p>What are these four forces? We know them as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/theory-gravity-exists-without-mass-so-dark-matter-does-not-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravity</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-sparks-the-discovery-of-a-new-electromagnetic-wave/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electromagnetism</a>, and the strong and weak nuclear forces. </p>



<p>As our universe expanded and cooled down, it underwent dramatic changes, known as phase transitions, splitting these forces.</p>



<p>Experiments suggest that a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microscopic-primordial-black-holes-may-explain-all-dark-matter-in-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">few billionths of a second</a> after the Big Bang, the breakdown of electroweak unification took place. </p>



<p>This was when electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force separated, leading to all matter in the universe acquiring its mass.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-universe-s-primordial-soup">Universe’s primordial soup</h2>



<p>Our walk through the early universe reveals a world filled with a peculiar substance called quark-gluon plasma. </p>



<p>As its name suggests, this 'primordial soup' consisted of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gluons-quarks-and-mystery-what-makes-proton-spin/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quarks and gluons</a>, sub-atomic particles responsible for the strong nuclear force. This plasma didn't last long, though.</p>

<p>A few millionths of a second post-Big Bang, as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/origins-of-matter-discovered-by-recreating-the-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe</a> expanded and cooled, quarks and gluons clumped together to form protons and neutrons, the building blocks of atoms. This event is referred to as quark confinement.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-bang-nucleosynthesis">Big Bang nucleosynthesis</h2>



<p>With fewer high energy photons in the universe, the process called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-study-claims-our-universe-is-27-billion-years-old-double-the-current-age-estimate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Bang nucleosynthesis</a> (BBN) kicked in. This was when the first atomic nuclei -- dense lumps of matter made from protons and neutrons -- formed.</p>



<p>Once, the higher amount of high energy photons would have quickly destroyed any <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atomic-nucleus-made-of-quarks-and-gluons-reproduced-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atomic nuclei</a>, but with fewer of them around, BBN could take place. </p>



<p>The fusion reactions stopped just a few minutes after the Big Bang, but their effects are observable to this day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-bang-theory-and-the-singularity">Big Bang theory and the singularity</h2>



<p>Penetrating further into our cosmic past, we reach an intriguing period where there's no evidence for what existed before the breakdown of electroweak unification. </p>



<p>The energy density at this point was so high that our mathematical equations fumble and become nonsensical. This period is known as a singularity.</p>



<p>In the 1960s, two British theoretical physicists, Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose, presented a series of mathematical theorems suggesting that the universe's spacetime must end at a singularity in the past -- the Big Bang singularity.</p>



<p>While Penrose received the Nobel Prize in 2020, Hawking, who passed away in 2018, was not eligible for this posthumous honor.</p>



<p>According to these theories, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/matter-spacetime-gravitational-waves-fabric-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space and time</a> appear at the Big Bang singularity, suggesting there is no 'before' the Big Bang. So, in scientific terms, the Big Bang is the dawn of time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-quandary-of-big-bang-theory">Quantum quandary of Big Bang theory</h2>



<p>Despite its accuracy in a vast majority of cases, the theory of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radical-new-theory-finally-unites-gravity-spacetime-and-the-quantum-realm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">general relativity</a> fails to describe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/impossible-quantum-effects-observed-atoms-positioned-closely-together/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atoms</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/t-coronae-borealis-nova-explosion-nearby-star-light-up-earths-skies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear fusion</a>, or radioactivity. These phenomena are instead explained by quantum theory.</p>



<p>Quantum theory differs from its classical counterparts, such as relativity, by being probabilistic. While classical theories are deterministic and predict a definite outcome from certain initial conditions, quantum theory assigns a probability to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">multiple possible outcomes</a>.</p>



<p>Gravity is one such area where the classical description falls short, especially when spacetime curvature is extreme, near a singularity. </p>



<p>During these extreme conditions, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/central-theory-of-quantum-gravity-is-modeled-in-the-laboratory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum nature of gravity</a> surfaces, making spacetime more like the fibers and threads of a carpet seen up close -- gnarly, not smooth.</p>



<p>Close to the Big Bang singularity, the structure of spacetime ceases to be smooth. Mathematical theorems suggest that spacetime is overwhelmed by gnarly features, or spacetime foam. </p>



<p>In spacetime foam, causality does not apply, making the question "why did the Big Bang occur?" meaningless. Events do not need a cause to occur.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-universe-born-out-of-chaos">Universe born out of chaos</h2>



<p>To understand the physics at a singularity like the Big Bang, we need a theory explaining the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-particles-solution-gravitational-wave-mystery-bose-einstein-condensate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum behavior of gravity</a>. </p>



<p>But efforts to formulate one, such as loop quantum gravity and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/consciousness-may-stem-from-unseen-dimensions-beyond-our-reality/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">string theory</a>, are still in their infancy, rendering spacetime foam an enigma.</p>



<p>However, the theory of cosmic inflation, introduced by Alexei Starobinsky and Alan Guth, might provide some answers. </p>



<p>Inflation is a period of accelerated expansion in the early universe. As difficult as it may be to comprehend, it explains why our universe is large, uniform, and spatially flat.</p>



<p>"I usually describe inflation as a theory of the 'bang' of the Big Bang: It describes the propulsion mechanism that we call the Big Bang," explained Alan Guth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-all-of-this-mean">What does all of this mean?</h2>



<p>To sum it all up, according to a well-accepted theory called the Big Bang, the story of our universe begins with a cataclysmic explosion roughly 14 billion years ago. </p>



<p>This explosion kickstarted a period of explosive expansion, called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-telescope-will-reveal-the-universe-in-more-than-100-colors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cosmic inflation</a>. The events before inflation remain a mystery. Is it a spacetime singularity, or is it spacetime foam? The answer is still largely unknown.</p>



<p>We know, or at least what we think we know, is that our universe was born from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chaos</a> and has evolved over billions of years into the organized cosmos we see today. </p>



<p>We still have a lot to learn, but we've come a very long way in a relatively short period of time. </p>



<p>Rather than beat ourselves up that we still don't know the "why" part of the question, let's just enjoy the ride and never stop seeking the answer to the ultimate question: How did it all begin?</p>

<p>Between 120 and 130 million years ago, during the age of the dinosaurs, northeast China hosted vibrant temperate forests and lakes that nurtured a diverse ecosystem.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Fossils from this period stayed untouched for millions of years until villagers began to unearth exceptionally preserved specimens in the 1980s.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These finds, often sold to collectors and museums, initiated a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossils-capture-a-turning-point-in-the-evolution-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil</a> rush that has since transformed the region into one of the most heavily excavated paleontological sites in the world, visible even from space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossils-of-well-preserved-dinosaurs">Fossils of well-preserved dinosaurs</h2>



<p>The dinosaur fossils discovered in the Yixian Formation stood out for being remarkably well-preserved. </p>



<p>Unlike the usual fragmented skeletal remains found at other sites, these fossils often included soft tissues, internal organs, feathers, fur, and even stomach contents. </p>



<p>Notable among these finds was a cat-sized mammal locked in a struggle with a small dinosaur, both seemingly frozen in time. </p>



<p>Such discoveries confirmed that modern birds are descendants of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-evolved-feathers-for-much-more-than-just-flying/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">feathered dinosaurs</a> and provided crucial insights into their evolution, redefining paleontological understanding. </p>



<p>Early theories suggested that a sudden volcanic event, similar to the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that buried <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tragic-end-of-pompeii-was-not-solely-caused-by-mount-vesuvius/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pompeii</a>, might have been responsible for preserving these fossils, leading to the formation’s nickname, “Chinese Pompeii.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-refuting-volcanic-theories">Refuting volcanic theories</h2>



<p>A recent study published in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2322875121" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em></a> challenges the long-held belief that volcanic activity was the primary reason for the pristine preservation of these fossils.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers, using precise dating techniques, argue that the fossils were preserved not by dramatic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-early-humans-survived-the-eruption-of-toba-supervolcano/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic cataclysms</a> but by more common occurrences such as burrow collapses and periods of heavy rainfall that quickly buried the remains.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This new study pinpoints the age of these fossils to a compact period of less than 93,000 years, dismissing the notion that preservation was the result of multiple volcanic pulses over millions of years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-well-preserved-dinosaur-discoveries">Well-preserved dinosaur discoveries</h2>



<p>“These are probably the most important dinosaur discoveries of the last 120 years,” said study co-author Paul Olsen, a paleontologist at the Columbia Climate School’s <a href="https://lamont.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory</a>. </p>

<p>“But what was said about their method of preservation highlights an important human bias. That is, to ascribe extraordinary causes, i.e. miracles, to ordinary events when we don’t understand their origins. These [fossils] are just a snapshot of everyday deaths in normal conditions over a relatively brief time.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-against-volcanic-theories">Evidence against volcanic theories</h2>



<p>The research team dismissed the possibility of preservation by volcanic lahars -- fast-moving mudflows -- due to their violent nature, which would have obliterated delicate remains. </p>



<p>Similarly, the theory of pyroclastic flows, like those that buried Pompeii, was ruled out. </p>



<p>Such flows would have incinerated feathers and fur, and left the bodies in the characteristic “pugilistic” posture seen in victims of extreme heat. </p>



<p>Instead, the animals in the Yixian Formation are found in more relaxed positions, suggesting a peaceful end.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-theory-of-sudden-burrow-collapses-nbsp">Theory of sudden burrow collapses&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Instead of volcanic cataclysms, the researchers propose that many of the preserved fossils were the result of sudden burrow collapses. Evidence for this theory came from the composition of the rock surrounding the fossils.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the general rock formations were made of coarse grains, the material immediately around and within the skeletons was finer, indicating that fine sediment seeped in as bacteria or insects degraded the soft tissues, preserving the bones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Olsen noted that even today, burrow collapses can be fatal for animals like penguins, illustrating how this process may have played a role in the preservation of ancient creatures.</p>



<p>The extraordinary find of a mammal and dinosaur locked in combat could potentially be explained by such collapses. </p>



<p>The mammal may have been invading the dinosaur’s burrow in search of food or safety when both met their end.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-triggered-burrow-collapses">What triggered burrow collapses?</h2>



<p>While the researchers propose burrow collapses as the primary cause of death, the exact triggers remain speculative.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One possibility is that larger dinosaurs, which do not appear in the fossil record but likely roamed the area, may have inadvertently crushed the burrows while moving through the landscape. </p>



<p>Additionally, periods of intense rainfall could have destabilized the ground, contributing to collapses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-for-future-dinosaur-discoveries">Potential for future dinosaur discoveries</h2>



<p>Olsen believes that the Yixian Formation's unique preservation is not exclusive and that other areas around the world could yield similarly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gigoutella-mauretanica-best-preserved-trilobite-fossils-ever-found/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">well-preserved</a> dinosaur fossils if excavated with the same intensity. </p>



<p>“It’s just that there is no place else where such intense collecting has been done in this kind of environment,” he said. </p>



<p>While China has taken measures to regulate fossil sales, the demand remains robust, and significant investments have been made to promote tourism around these fossil sites.</p>



<p>Olsen mentioned sites in the eastern United States that share environmental similarities with Yixian, such as a quarry straddling the North Carolina-Virginia border, sites in Connecticut, and a former quarry in New Jersey.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, large-scale excavation in these areas has yet to happen due to the high cost and the value of the land.</p>



<p>“It takes enormous effort, which is expensive. And land is valuable in these areas. So no one is doing it. At least not yet,” Olsen concluded.</p>

<p>Supermassive black holes reside at the centers of most galaxies, captivating scientists with their enormous gravitational pull. However, understanding how these black holes managed to grow so rapidly in the early universe has posed significant challenges.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A recent study led by Hyewon Suh of the <a href="https://noirlab.edu/public/programs/gemini-observatory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Gemini Observatory/NSF NOIRLab</a> sheds light on this cosmic enigma. The team uncovered an extraordinary low-mass <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-map-of-supermassive-black-holes-unveiled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supermassive black hole</a>, named LID-568, consuming material at an alarming rate just 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-the-webb-telescope-nbsp">The power of the Webb telescope<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>To make this groundbreaking discovery, Suh's team utilized the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expansion-rate-of-the-universe-confirmed-by-jwst/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a> (JWST), a technological marvel known for its unmatched infrared sensitivity. </p>



<p>The telescope observed a sample of galaxies from the <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2016ApJ...819...62C/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chandra X-ray Observatory’s COSMOS legacy survey</a>. This particular survey includes galaxies that are bright in the X-ray spectrum but had previously been undetectable in optical and near-infrared wavelengths. JWST's capabilities enabled the team to detect these elusive emissions.</p>



<p>LID-568 was especially notable within this sample for its intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/understanding-x-ray-radiation-that-spews-out-of-black-holes-surroundings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">X-ray</a> emissions. Yet, accurately determining its exact position was problematic based on the X-ray data alone. </p>



<p>The team received instrumental support from JWST scientists, who recommended using the telescope’s integral field spectrograph on NIRSpec. This tool provided a complete spectrum for every pixel in its field of view, allowing a comprehensive analysis of LID-568 and its surroundings.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Owing to its faint nature, the detection of LID-568 would be impossible without JWST. Using the integral field spectrograph was innovative and necessary for getting our observation,” said co-author Emanuele Farina, an astronomer at the International Gemini Observatory.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gas-outflows-and-rapid-accretion">Gas outflows and rapid accretion</h2>



<p>With JWST’s NIRSpec, the team discovered unexpected outflows of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mechanism-discovered-that-creates-the-gas-disks-around-black-holes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gas</a> around LID-568, hinting at substantial mass growth occurring in a single, rapid episode. These outflows offered clues to how the black hole could be feeding so aggressively. </p>



<p>“This serendipitous result added a new dimension to our understanding of the system and opened up exciting avenues for investigation,” Suh noted.</p>



<p>The researchers also found that LID-568 was accreting matter at an astonishing rate - approximately 40 times its Eddington limit.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Eddington limit describes the theoretical maximum luminosity a black hole can achieve while maintaining balance between the inward gravitational pull and the outward pressure produced by infalling material.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-in-a-feeding-frenzy">Black hole in a feeding frenzy</h2>



<p>The observation of such extreme luminosity suggested something remarkable was unfolding within LID-568.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This black hole is having a feast,” stated co-author Julia Scharwächter, an astronomer at the International Gemini Observatory/NSF NOIRLab.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This extreme case shows that a fast-feeding mechanism above the Eddington limit is one of the possible explanations for why we see these very heavy black holes so early in the Universe.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-formation-theories">Black hole formation theories</h2>



<p>The discovery of LID-568 has significant implications for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-black-holes-become-supermassive/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole formation</a> and growth. </p>



<p>Current theories propose that supermassive black holes evolve from initial “seeds” formed either through the collapse of the universe’s first stars (light seeds) or by direct gas cloud collapse (heavy seeds). However, until now, these theories lacked substantial observational backing.</p>



<p>“The discovery of a super-Eddington accreting black hole suggests that a significant portion of mass growth can occur during a single episode of rapid feeding, regardless of whether the black hole originated from a light or heavy seed,” Suh explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This observation challenges existing models and hints that some black holes in the early universe may have grown rapidly, far beyond the Eddington limit, allowing them to achieve immense size in a relatively short time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-in-rapid-growth-phases-nbsp">Black holes in rapid growth phases<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The detection of LID-568’s extreme accretion rates also opens the door for investigating how black holes manage to exceed their Eddington limits without collapsing under the pressure.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One theory is that the powerful outflows observed around LID-568 act as a release mechanism for excess energy, thus stabilizing the system.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This idea, if proven true, could reshape our understanding of how supermassive black holes sustain such rapid growth phases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-path-for-future-exploration">Path for future exploration</h2>



<p>To further investigate these dynamics, Suh's team plans to conduct follow-up observations with JWST.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These future studies aim to deepen the understanding of early black hole behavior and provide more context for the universe’s formative years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers hope these insights will refine existing theoretical models and uncover new information about black hole growth and the evolution of the cosmos.</p>



<p>The research highlights the transformative impact of the Webb telescope on the field of astrophysics and emphasizes the importance of continued exploration to unravel the complex nature of our universe’s earliest structures.</p>

<p>A recent study has revealed that trawling disrupts the carbon balance in our oceans, which ultimately impacts our climate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-sea-and-its-carbon-secrets">Deep sea and its carbon secrets</h2>



<p>The deep-sea abyss is more than a home for marine life. It acts as a critical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-southern-ocean-is-a-critically-important-carbon-sink/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sink</a>, holding onto more carbon than it releases. </p>



<p>Animal activity on the seafloor consumes and shifts this carbon into deeper soil layers, safely tucking it away for thousands of years. But when fishing trawls stir up these sediments, it disrupts this natural, delicate balance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trawling-s-impact-on-climate">Trawling’s impact on climate </h2>



<p>Research carried out at <a href="https://www.hereon.de/index.php.en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon</a> - in collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute, GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel, and the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND) - has cast a spotlight on this lesser-known consequence of fishing.</p>



<p>The study has provided significant data on how bottom trawling impacts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-ocean-turbulence-impacts-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon storage</a>, particularly in the North Sea. The scientists examined over 2,300 sediment samples from the North Sea.</p>



<p>"We found that sediment samples collected in intensely trawled areas contained lower amounts of organic carbon than samples collected in areas with less <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-fishing-method-of-bottom-trawling-harms-both-the-ocean-and-the-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fishing</a>. We were able to attribute this effect to bottom trawling with high confidence," said Dr. Wenyan Zhang, the study's lead author.</p>



<p>According to Dr. Zhang, the methodology used for this research reduces uncertainty in assessing the regional to global impact of trawling compared to previous estimates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-release-due-to-trawling">Carbon release due to trawling</h2>



<p>The experts uncovered a worrisome trend. Computer simulations demonstrated a steady decline in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seabed-disruptions-may-be-destroying-our-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seabed</a> carbon concentration across the past few decades, and this decline was attributed to intensive trawling activities.</p>



<p>Vulnerable areas were soft, muddy bottoms where damage was most significant. When trawling takes place, it disturbs the sediment, releasing carbon from a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/low-oxygen-zone-is-expanding-in-the-arabian-gulf/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">low-oxygen</a> environment into the water column filled with oxygen. </p>



<p>Here, microorganisms transform the carbon into carbon dioxide, or CO2, which can escape into the atmosphere. This heat-trapping greenhouse gas is a major contributor to climate change.</p>



<p>Dr. Zhang's team estimated that North Sea trawling alone releases about 1 million tons of CO2 from sediments annually. The global estimate stands at 30 million tons - which is about 10% less than previous global estimates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calling-for-enhanced-seabed-protection">Calling for enhanced seabed protection</h2>



<p>The study's findings highlight the need to protect our ocean floors more effectively, explicitly targeting muddy habitats in marginal seas like the North Sea. </p>



<p>Marine protection measures have traditionally been focused on areas with hard, sandy bottoms and reefs. These areas, despite their ecological diversity, store less carbon.</p>



<p>"Our methods and results might be used in optimizing marine spatial planning policies to gauge the potential carbon benefits of limiting or ending bottom trawling within protected areas," noted Dr. Zhang.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rethinking-marine-protection-strategies">Rethinking marine protection strategies</h2>



<p>The findings on trawling’s climate impact are pushing scientists and conservationists to reconsider current marine protection strategies.</p>



<p>Traditional conservation efforts have focused on areas with high biodiversity, such as coral reefs and sandy seabeds, often overlooking soft, muddy habitats where trawling causes the most carbon disruption.</p>



<p>By shifting attention to these vulnerable carbon-rich areas, policymakers could develop more effective regulations that not only protect marine life but also contribute to climate mitigation. </p>



<p>This renewed focus could involve establishing no-trawling zones in sediment-heavy regions - enhancing carbon storage while safeguarding diverse ocean ecosystems.</p>



<p>While these strategies offer a pathway forward, it’s essential to understand the long-term effects that seabed disturbance has on our oceans' capacity to store carbon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-impacts-of-seabed-disturbance">Long-term impacts of seabed disturbance</h2>



<p>The disruption of seabed sediments through trawling has consequences that extend beyond immediate carbon release. </p>



<p>Once disturbed, these sediments take years or even decades to stabilize and rebuild their carbon-storing capabilities.</p>



<p>This prolonged recovery period means that frequent trawling in the same areas could prevent the seafloor from ever fully regaining its role as a carbon sink. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trawling-and-climate-change">Trawling and climate change</h2>



<p>Over time, this ongoing disturbance diminishes the ocean’s natural ability to capture and store carbon, amplifying the challenge of addressing climate change. </p>



<p>Researchers warn that without intervention, these cumulative effects could lead to long-term losses in carbon storage capacity, highlighting the importance of sustainable fishing practices and regulated trawling efforts.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. <p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
