<p>In a lab in Genoa, Italy, volunteers teamed up with iCub, a child-sized humanoid robot, to slice a bar of soap using a steel wire. The task itself was simple. What surprised researchers was what happened afterward: the participants’ brains began treating iCub’s hand as if it were their own.</p>



<p>The study was led by experts at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (<a href="https://www.iit.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IIT</a>) and <a href="https://www.brown.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brown University</a>. The results suggests that collaboration with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-attached-mushroom-mycelium-to-biohybrid-robot-body-amazing-results/">robot</a> does more than complete a task. It changes how our brains map the space around us.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-maps-with-robots">Brain maps with robots</h2>



<p>Our brains keep a constantly updating map of the body that helps us move without thinking about each step.</p>



<p>Swinging a tennis racket or reaching for a glass of water feels natural because the brain treats the racket or the glass as part of the body for that moment. This map is flexible. It expands and reshapes when new tools or objects prove useful.</p>



<p>The team wanted to know if a humanoid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brainless-soft-robot-created-that-runs-and-swims-is-powered-solely-by-air/">robot</a> could fit into that same map. Could our brain adopt a robot hand the way it adopts a familiar tool? That was the puzzle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-detection-of-robot-hands">Brain's detection of robot hands</h2>



<p>The experiment built on what scientists call the near hand effect. When a hand is near an object, the brain pays more attention to it. It prepares to act. </p>



<p>Earlier studies showed that this effect can even extend to another person’s hand, but only after working together. The researchers asked if the same could happen with a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robots-are-using-game-theory-keep-humans-safe/">robot</a>.</p>



<p>Giulia Scorza Azzarà, a PhD student at IIT and first author of the study, designed the test. Volunteers and iCub cut soap together using a steel wire. Afterward, they did the Posner cueing task, a reaction-time test where images flash on a screen.</p>



<p>The results were striking. People responded faster when images appeared near iCub’s hand. Their brains had started to treat the robot’s hand almost like their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-actively-collaborating-with-a-robot-hand">Actively collaborating with a robot hand</h2>



<p>This effect didn’t happen automatically. A control study showed that when the robot’s hand was simply placed near the screen, without any shared task, there was no change in attention. </p>



<p>Unlike a rubber fake hand, which can trick the brain through sight alone, a robot’s hand needed active collaboration to matter. </p>



<p>Attention is prioritized to the space near another’s hand (human or robot) only after the latter becomes relevant to accomplish a shared goal.</p>



<p>The way iCub moved changed how people responded. When the robot’s movements were wide, fluid, and well synchronized, the effect grew stronger. </p>



<p>Distance also mattered. If the robot’s hand came close to a person’s personal space, the brain was more likely to accept it into its map. Engagement and closeness turned out to be powerful ingredients.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-sees-robots">How the brain sees robots</h2>



<p>The study also measured how people felt about their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aquatic-robot-inspired-by-flatworms-can-swim-in-harmony-with-nature/">robotic</a> partner. Questionnaires revealed that the more competent, likable, or animated iCub seemed, the stronger the effect became. </p>



<p>When participants thought of the robot as capable of feeling or acting intelligently, their brains gave more weight to its presence. The more human-like and competent the robot is perceived to be, the more impact its hand has after collaboration on human attentional prioritization.</p>



<p>What forms here is something called a joint body schema. During teamwork, our brains do not just map our own limbs. They also start to include a partner’s movements. </p>



<p>Athletes, dancers, and musicians rely on this unconscious merging all the time. The new study shows that robots can be part of it too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions </h2>



<p>The researchers note that iCub’s behavior in the study was pre-programmed. It could not adapt in real time the way humans do. </p>



<p>Future robots will need to adjust their actions more flexibly, responding to the pace and style of their human partners. Adaptability could make the connection feel even more natural.</p>



<p>Future tests may also explore whether the same effect happens with non-humanoid objects, like a stick or another simple tool. That would show whether human-like design is essential, or whether collaboration itself is enough to reshape attention.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-power-of-working-with-robots">The power of working with robots</h2>



<p>The applications are clear. Robots that people can accept as extensions of themselves could transform rehabilitation and assistive care. </p>



<p>Patients recovering from injury may work with robots that help restore movement by literally feeling like part of their bodies. Virtual reality systems could integrate robotic partners that guide attention and enhance immersion.</p>



<p>This project is part of the ERC-funded wHiSPER initiative, coordinated by IIT’s CONTACT unit. It reveals a powerful idea: working with robots can change how we see ourselves. </p>



<p>Slicing soap may seem trivial, but the shift it triggered shows just how ready our brains are to make space for new partners - even mechanical ones.</p>

<p>In a distant corner of our galaxy, 41 light years from Earth, the TRAPPIST-1 star system contains seven planets orbiting a red dwarf star. </p>



<p>Some of these planets are in the habitable zone, where conditions might be suitable for life as we know it, and where experts hope to possibly intercept alien signals. It's an irresistible invitation to explore the potential for life beyond Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detecting-radio-signals-from-alien-planets">Detecting radio signals from alien planets</h2>



<p>A group of scientists from the <a href="https://www.seti.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SETI Institute</a> and <a href="https://www.psu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State University</a> embarked on a quest to detect alien signals from TRAPPIST-1. </p>



<p>Their tool of choice? The Allen Telescope Array (<a href="https://www.seti.org/ata" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ATA</a>), an array of radio antennas aimed at the cosmos like an eager ear, straining for whispers of alien technology.</p>



<p>For 28 continuous hours, the team scoured the system, seeking radio signals that could be indicative of extraterrestrial technology. </p>



<p>This endeavor represents the most extended single-target search for radio signals from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/">TRAPP</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">I</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/">ST-1</a>. </p>



<p>Despite not stumbling upon outright evidence of alien <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expanding-the-search-for-extraterrestrial-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">presence</a>, the expedition has unearthed a wealth of valuable data and has pointed the way to a new path to detect signals in the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-seti-program">Understanding the SETI Program</h2>



<p>SETI, which stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is on a mission to tackle one of humanity’s biggest questions: Are we alone in the universe?</p>



<p>The researchers at SETI are dedicated to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-radio-bursts-from-space-may-be-signs-of-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scanning the cosmos</a> for signals that could hint at intelligent life beyond Earth.</p>



<p>They use cutting-edge tech like powerful radio telescopes and smart algorithms to sift through huge amounts of data from distant stars and galaxies.</p>



<p>SETI is always evolving, bringing in the latest scientific advancements to improve its chances of spotting potential communications from extraterrestrial civilizations. </p>



<p>This new initiative is a great example of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-have-20-minute-conversation-with-a-humpback-whale-named-twain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SETI is evolving</a> from its original mission statement.</p>



<p>The program aims to find concrete evidence of life out there while encouraging us to think deeply about our place in the universe and what intelligence really means.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-communication-from-extraterrestrial-civilizations">Communication from extraterrestrial civilizations</h2>



<p>“This research shows we are getting closer to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finding-alien-life-searching-for-color-purple-not-green/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">detecting radio signals</a> similar to the ones we send into space,” said Nick Tusay, a research fellow at Penn State University.</p>



<p>The existing receiver technology, however, does have its limitations. </p>



<p>“Most searches assume some intent, like beacons, because our receivers have a sensitivity limit to a minimum transmitter power beyond anything we unintentionally send out," noted Tusay.</p>



<p>However, with the advent of more sophisticated equipment, like the upcoming Square Kilometer Array (<a href="https://www.skao.int/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SKA</a>), Tusay believes we could soon detect signals from extraterrestrial civilizations communicating with their spacecraft.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-narrowband-signals-and-alien-technology">Narrowband signals and alien technology </h2>



<p>The focus of the project was planet-planet occultations (PPOs), which occur when one planet moves in front of another from our vantage point here on Earth. </p>



<p>If intelligent life exists on those planets, any <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insights-alien-life-mars-water-sulfur-discovered-gained-studying-extreme-life-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radio signals</a> exchanged between them might leak out.</p>



<p>"PPOs may provide a unique opportunity to observe radio 'spillover' from extraterrestrial intelligences' (ETIs) radio transmissions or radar being transmitted from the further exoplanet towards the nearer one for the purposes of communication or scientific exploration," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>Armed with the upgraded Allen Telescope Array, the team scanned a wide range of frequencies. They searched for narrowband signals -- possible fingerprints of alien technology.</p>



<p>Millions of potential signals were collected, and around 11,000 candidates underwent further analysis. Of these, 2,264 signals were picked up during predicted PPO windows.</p>



<p>However, none of these signals turned out to originate from a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gases-can-help-detect-alien-life-on-distant-planets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">non-human source</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-filtering-out-human-signals-to-find-aliens">Filtering out human signals to find aliens</h2>



<p>The new capabilities of the Allen Telescope Array, with advanced software designed to filter signals, assisted the team in separating potential alien signals from ones originating on Earth.</p>



<p>The researchers believe that refining these techniques and focusing on events like PPOs might increase the chances of detecting elusive alien signals in the future.</p>



<p>“This project included work by undergraduate students in the 2023 SETI Institute Research Experience for Undergraduates (<a href="https://www.seti.org/research-experience-undergraduates" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">REU</a>) program,” noted Dr. Sofia Sheikh.</p>



<p>"The students looked for signals from human-made orbiters around Mars to check if the system could detect signals correctly. It was an exciting way to involve students in cutting-edge SETI research."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-searches-with-more-powerful-telescopes">Future searches with more powerful telescopes</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jwst-provides-new-insights-into-a-distant-star-and-its-exoplanets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The TRAPPIST-1 system</a> is a tantalizing target. Its proximity to Earth - along with the detailed information available regarding the orbits of its planets - provide a natural laboratory to test these techniques.</p>



<p>The SETI team will continue to refine their search techniques while also exploring other star systems.</p>



<p>The realistic hope is that future searches with larger and more powerful telescopes might allow scientists to detect even fainter signals, thereby broadening our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-in-the-deep-sea-may-hold-clues-about-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding of the universe</a>.</p>



<p>Who knows what the future holds? Will our descendants be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-connection-aliens-could-make-contact-by-2029/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">talking to our extraterrestrial neighbors</a> as casually as we chat with our friends across continents today?</p>

SETI is searching for radio signals of aliens communicating with each other

<p>Human diets have long served as a window into the past, offering insights into the habits and lifestyles of our ancestors. </p>



<p>These dietary patterns not only shaped early human survival but also influenced the evolution of our digestive systems. </p>



<p>Now, researchers have taken this concept further by examining the bacteria in our stomachs to uncover what our earliest human ancestors consumed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-bacterial-clue-a-tale-of-helicobacter">The bacterial clue: A tale of Helicobacter</h2>



<p>Helicobacter pylori, discovered in 1983, is a bacterium notorious for causing significant gastric diseases, including around a million cases of stomach <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/which-dietary-changes-are-best-for-cancer-prevention/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> annually. </p>



<p>Its long association with humans - dating back to more than 100,000 years - suggests its likely role in many prehistoric stomach aches.</p>



<p>The study was conducted by Professor Daniel Falush of the Shanghai Institute of Immunity and Infection (SIII) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Yoshio Yamaoka of <a href="https://www.oita-u.ac.jp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oita University</a>, and Professor Kaisa Thorell of <a href="https://www.gu.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gothenberg University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-specialized-strain-of-bacteria">Specialized strain of bacteria</h2>



<p>The researchers analyzed nearly 7,000 Helicobacter genomes from around the world. Among their key findings was a highly distinct variant of Helicobacter, termed the Hardy ecospecies.</p>



<p>This variant emerged hundreds of thousands of years ago and spread around the world alongside humanity. It's a specialized strain, designed to live in the stomachs of people with a principally carnivorous diet - those who consumed a lot of meat or fish.</p>



<p>This discovery suggests that our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-have-very-clever-ways-of-supporting-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stomach bacteria</a> today can inform us about the diet of our ancestors.</p>



<p>“We have made a substantial effort to collect bacteria from around the world, involving clinicians and researchers from more than 20 countries. This unprecedented collection of genomes will allow us to develop interventions and treatments suitable for every context,” said Professor Yamaoka.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-early-human-diets">Insights into early human diets</h2>



<p>These bacteria were already silent passengers in our stomachs, adapting and evolving as our species stepped out of Africa more than 50,000 years ago.</p>



<p>The new ecospecies of Helicobacter identified in the study, known as Hardy, is significantly different from the more common type (Ubiquitous) by over 100 genes.</p>



<p>This discovery offers great insight into what these bacteria need to survive in our stomach and how diversity is maintained within bacterial species.</p>



<p>Exploring the diet of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-humans-used-to-eat-their-ancestral-relatives-practicing-cannibalism/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancestral humans</a>, it appears that in some parts of the world people relied heavily on fish or meat for sustenance due to the seasonal unavailability of plant material. These locations include Indigenous regions of Siberia and Northern Canada.</p>



<p>Intriguingly, the Hardy ecospecies has key genetic differences that could adapt it to the conditions found in a carnivore’s stomach, hinting at the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bronze-age-teeth-discovery-highlight-the-evolution-of-the-human-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dietary habits of early humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bacteria-surviving-in-acidic-stomachs">Bacteria surviving in acidic stomachs</h2>



<p>One critical genetic difference between the Hardy and Ubiquitous strains lies in genes called ureases. </p>



<p>Ubiquitous Helicobacter pylori makes a urease protein that incorporates nickel atoms while most Hardy Helicobacter includes iron atoms instead of nickel. </p>



<p>This alternative urease helps Helicobacter survive in carnivores' more acidic stomachs, which also tend to have higher iron availability and lower nickel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-helicobacter-s-battle-with-the-immune-system">Helicobacter's battle with the immune system</h2>



<p>“Helicobacter pylori can live in our stomachs for decades, in a constant running battle with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-tiny-bacteria-outsmart-the-human-immune-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human immune system</a>, which can result in gastric disease," said Professor Thorel. </p>



<p>"The Hardy ecospecies differs from the normal Ubiquitous Helicobacter in many genes it uses to interact with stomach cells and immune system cells, implying a completely different strategy."</p>



<p>"Understanding this strategy can provide new insights into the development of gastric diseases, including the often deadly gastric cancer."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancestral-tale-of-gastric-bacteria">Ancestral tale of gastric bacteria</h2>



<p>The analysis of nearly 7,000 Helicobacter pylori genomes from around the world concluded that the first modern humans were infected by two distinct types of this bacterium – the Hardy and Ubiquitous.</p>



<p>Both ecospecies spread out of Africa during the early human migrations; however, the Hardy ecospecies appears to have gone extinct in many locations.</p>



<p>Understanding why these ecospecies coexist in some populations but not others promises to shed new light on our prehistory and the ongoing burden of gastric disease that we continue to grapple with today.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-07991-z" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a></em>.</p>

<p>Four days and a 48-hour work week - that's all it took to change the lives of employees across Germany. A paradigm shift, some might say, towards a future where work and life don't tug at different ends of your day but coexist harmoniously.</p>



<p>The result? Increased well-being with no dent in productivity. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-four-day-work-week">Four-day work week</h2>



<p>In 2024, Professor Dr. Julia Backmann from the University of Münster, along with Dr. Felix Hoch, conducted a trial to examine the effects of a reduced work week. They asked a simple question – Can a shorter week make us happier without compromising productivity?</p>



<p>"The four-day week led to a significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/all-work-and-no-play-striking-the-balance-may-be-the-key-to-life-satisfaction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">positive change in life satisfaction</a>, which was mainly due to the additional free time," said Dr. Backmann.</p>



<p>The employees' desire to spend more time with families dropped from 64% before the trial to 50% after the four-day week was introduced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-participating-in-the-four-day-work-week">Participating in the four-day work week</h2>



<p>Overall, 45 organizations across a range of sectors joined this six-month pilot project conducted by the Berlin consultancy Intraprenör and the organization 4 Day Week Global. </p>



<p>Carsten Meier, co-initiator of the pilot project and Managing Director of Intraprenör, was closely involved in presenting the research alongside Dr. Backmann.</p>



<p>The study aimed to explore the potential effects of a four-day work week on employee health, employer attractiveness, and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-to-set-realistic-goals-and-achieve-them-in-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">future direction of work</a>.</p>



<p>But another question loomed large – What would it mean for productivity?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-productivity-puzzle">The productivity puzzle</h2>



<p>Here’s a surprising finding from the study - a dip in working hours didn't spell doom for productivity.</p>



<p>"Although there were slight increases in key financial performance indicators such as turnover and profit, these were not significantly different from the previous year. Nevertheless, the unchanged key metrics indicate possible productivity gains despite the reduced working hours," explained Dr. Backmann.</p>



<p>The survey results revealed an interesting fact: both employees and top management noticed an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/practical-guide-overcoming-burnout-maintain-workplace-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increase in productivity</a>. The secret? Reducing distractions, streamlining processes, and altering meeting culture.</p>



<p>Over 60% cited these changes while more than 50% reduced the frequency and length of internal meetings. A quarter even incorporated new digital tools to enhance efficiency.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-happiness-report">Health &amp; happiness report</h2>



<p>Apart from an incremental upswing in productivity, the four-day week also had positive impacts on employee health. </p>



<p>According to Dr. Backmann, significant improvements were noted in the mental and physical well-being of the workforce with reports of less stress and burnout symptoms. Daily activity levels increased, and employees slept an average of 38 minutes longer each week than those in the control group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-on-organizational-health">Impact on organizational health</h2>



<p>Although the data showed a slight reduction in monthly sick days, the difference was not statistically significant compared to the previous year.</p>



<p>Also, the four-day week didn't seem to influence environmentally conscious behavior or carbon footprint.</p>



<p>But here’s the silver lining - more than 70% of the participating organizations indicated that they would like to continue with the four-day week experiment, implying a positive direction towards a future of balanced, satisfied workforces.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>As the trial concluded, the insights prompted both awe and further inquiry. Key lessons emerged surrounding the management of time, the empowerment of employees, and the recalibration of work systems.</p>



<p>Organizations saw the necessity of redefining goals and aligning them with employee wellness, thereby fostering an environment conducive to both innovation and satisfaction. </p>



<p>However, Dr. Backmann acknowledges that this research is merely a stepping stone. Future studies are essential to delve deeper into industry-specific impacts and long-term sustainability.</p>

<p>Web-slinging technology inspired by Spider-Man is now a reality thanks to innovative work by researchers at Tufts University.</p>



<p>This remarkable advancement uses silk-based materials to shoot a fluid through a fine needle, where it instantly solidifies into a strong, sticky string. </p>



<p>The string is capable of adhering to surfaces and lifting objects with surprising strength and precision.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wonders-of-web-slinging-technology">Wonders of web-slinging technology</h2>



<p>The web-slinging technology involves the creation of sticky fibers sourced from silk moth cocoons. </p>



<p>The cocoons, found within the Silklab of <a href="https://www.tufts.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tufts University</a>, are processed in a solution until they break down into fibroin - the base proteins of the silk.</p>



<p>Once extruded through fine bore needles, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/holy-grail-artificial-spider-silk-indistinguishable-from-natural-silk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">silk</a> fibroin solution transforms into a stream. Add the right ingredients, and this stream becomes a string the moment it hits open air.</p>

<p>Nature has always been a primary source of inspiration for the creation and utilization of silk <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fibers-inspired-by-spider-silk-are-stronger-than-steel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fibers</a>. Several creatures, from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-are-closer-to-unlocking-the-secrets-of-spider-silk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spiders</a> and ants to butterflies and beetles, produce silk at some stage in their life cycle.</p>



<p>The Silklab at Tufts University has been inspired by this natural marvel, leading to a series of remarkable developments.</p>



<p>The researchers have created strong adhesives that function underwater, printable sensors, edible coatings to increase the life of produce, and eco-friendly microchip manufacturing methods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inspiration-strikes-unexpectedly">Inspiration strikes unexpectedly</h2>



<p>Despite their progress with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-discover-how-to-make-stronger-silkworm-silk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">silk-based materials</a>, the researchers faced challenges in emulating the prowess of spiders, precisely controlling the stiffness, elasticity, and adhesive properties of the spun threads. However, a revelation arrived through a serendipitous event.</p>



<p>"I was working on a project making extremely strong adhesives using silk fibroin, and while I was cleaning my glassware with acetone, I noticed a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/squishy-robot-designed-for-space-now-assists-emergency-workers-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">web-like</a> material forming on the bottom of the glass," said Marco Lo Presti, research assistant professor at Tufts.</p>



<p>This accidental discovery facilitated the overcoming of several engineering hurdles in replicating spider threads.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-magic-of-chemistry">The magic of chemistry</h2>



<p>The researchers realized that silk fibroin solutions could form a semi-solid hydrogel over several hours when exposed to organic solvents like ethanol or acetone. </p>



<p>The addition of dopamine, an element used in making adhesives, allowed the solidification process to occur almost instantly. </p>



<p>The composition featuring dopamine and its polymers is similar to the chemistry that barnacles use to create fibers that adhere tenaciously to surfaces.</p>



<p>In order to spin these fibers in the air, the researchers added dopamine to the silk fibroin solution. In the presence of dopamine, the transition from liquid to solid was accelerated by drawing water away from the silk. </p>



<p>When launched through a coaxial needle, a thin stream of the silk solution gets enveloped by a layer of acetone, triggering the solidification.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-real-life-web-slinging-technology">Real-life web-slinging technology</h2>



<p>The acetone evaporates mid-air, leaving behind a fiber attached to any object it comes in contact with. </p>



<p>The researchers bolstered the silk fibroin-dopamine solution with chitosan, a derivative of insect exoskeletons, and borate buffer, which increased the adhesiveness and tensile strength of the fibers significantly.</p>



<p>The device can shoot fibers capable of lifting objects over 80 times their own weight, and the diameter of the fibers can be varied depending on the needle's bore. </p>



<p>The researchers demonstrated this by accurately lifting various objects, including a cocoon, a steel bolt, a lab tube floating on water, a scalpel partially buried in sand, and a wood block - all from a distance of about 12 centimeters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-material-inspired-by-a-superhero">Material inspired by a superhero </h2>



<p>"If you look at nature, you will find that spiders cannot shoot their web. They usually spin the silk out of their gland, physically contact a surface, and draw out the lines to construct their webs," said Lo Presti.</p>



<p>"We are demonstrating a way to shoot a fiber from a device, then adhere to and pick up an object from a distance. Rather than presenting this work as a bio-inspired material, it's really a superhero-inspired material."</p>



<p>While natural spider silk is still markedly stronger than the human-made fibers, continual innovation promises to bridge this gap, opening up an array of possible technological applications.</p>



<p>"As scientists and engineers, we navigate the boundary between imagination and practice. That's where all the magic happens," said Professor Fiorenzo Omenetto, director of the Silklab.</p>



<p>"In this case, we wanted to reverse engineer our silk material to behave the way nature originally designed it, and comic book writers imagined it."</p>

<p>In the world of scientific discovery, some of the most exciting breakthroughs happen by accident. Researchers often begin with a clear plan, only to find that nature has its own surprises, such as viruses that look like a sunflower. </p>



<p>This was exactly the case for a group of scientists, who, while working with bacteriophages - viruses that target and eat bacteria - stumbled upon something unexpected. What they discovered were tiny, sunflower-like viruses that could transform the way we approach disease detection and treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-viruses-that-look-like-a-sunflower">Viruses that look like a sunflower?</h2>



<p>It seems that even the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-can-hide-in-lung-cells-and-cause-chronic-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tiniest of lifeforms</a> enjoy getting a little creative sometimes. The McMaster team was left stunned at their lab slides when they observed the bacteriophages, often referred to as phages, forming into 3D configurations closely resembling sunflowers.</p>



<p>But these tiny "flowers" were not your average garden variety. They were just two-tenths of a millimeter across.</p>



<p>Isn't it surprising how sometimes, momentous discoveries can pop up in the most unexpected places?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-formation-of-phages">Unexpected formation of phages</h2>



<p>What sparked this peculiar metamorphosis? The answer lies in the process the researchers had used to prepare the phages for viewing. </p>



<p>In order to keep the viruses alive, the researchers decided on the path less traveled by using high-pressure carbon dioxide instead of the standard and more lethal heat or solvent-based methods.</p>



<p>And the result? An unexpected yet promising microstructure that they had been aiming to synthesize for years. </p>



<p>Study lead author Lei Tian, who led the research during his time as a PhD student and subsequently, a postdoctoral research fellow at <a href="https://www.mcmaster.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McMaster</a>, said his initial intention was only to preserve the virus structure. But nature, as always, had other plans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-sunflower-formations">Significance of the sunflower formations</h2>



<p>What makes this haphazard structure so important? Well, it turns out to be 100 times more capable than unlinked phages at locating their bacterial targets.</p>



<p>This means that these sunflower-like formations could open up a world of opportunities in detecting and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-makes-a-virus-capable-of-causing-a-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">combating numerous diseases</a>. And the best part - all of this is achieved via natural materials and processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-incredible-insight-on-sunflower-like-viruses">Incredible insight on sunflower-like viruses</h2>



<p>“It was an accidental discovery,” said study co-author and mechanical engineer Tohid Didar. "When we took them out of the high-pressure chamber and saw these beautiful flowers, it completely blew our minds." </p>



<p>"It took us two years to discover how and why this happened and opened the door to being able to create similar structures with other protein-based materials.”</p>



<p>Zeinab Hosseinidoust, senior author of the study, has been exploring the potential of phages in her lab for years now.</p>



<p>The team has made significant strides, such as prompting the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/viruses-use-gps-to-move-precisely-within-insects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viruses</a> to interlink, forming a microscopic living fabric, and even developing a gel visible to the naked eye.</p>



<p>In the past, it hasn't been possible to give this material any form of depth or shape. But with the arrival of the sunflower-like structures of viruses with all their wrinkles, peaks, and crevices, it seems that barrier has been broken down. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-s-masterpiece-sunflower-like-viruses">Nature's masterpiece: Sunflower-like viruses</h2>



<p>“This is really about building with nature,” said Hosseinidoust. “This kind of beautiful, wrinkled structure is ubiquitous in nature." </p>



<p>"The mechanical, optical and biological properties of this kind of structure have inspired engineers over decades to build these kinds of structures artificially, in the hope of getting the same kind of properties out of them.”</p>



<p>The discovery has opened doors to shaping phages in a variety of ways, enhancing their efficiency and creating opportunities for innovative biological applications. </p>



<p>For instance, the team was able to blend these flower-like structures with DNAzymes, enabling them to detect low concentrations of Legionella bacteria in water from commercial cooling towers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-endless-source-of-inspiration">Endless source of inspiration</h2>



<p>As antibiotic resistance continues to be a major concern, a rekindled interest in bacteriophages as a treatment for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/influenza-is-considered-the-biggest-pandemic-threat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">various infections</a> has arisen.</p>



<p> With their ability to specifically target certain bacteria while leaving others unharmed, the potential for these tiny viruses holds a lot more promise than we might have believed.</p>



<p>“Nature is so powerful and so intelligent. As engineers, it’s our job to learn how it works, so we can harness processes like this and put them to use,” said Hosseinidoust.</p>

<p>Air pollution, the invisible enemy, is not just a threat to our lungs but also holds detrimental implications for our brain.</p>



<p>Fine particulate matter or PM2.5, a complex medley of microscopic particles and droplets suspended in the air, has been the culprit behind lung tissue damage and inflammation for years. </p>



<p>However, recent developments have turned our attention toward another potential victim of this insidious enemy - our cognitive health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-pollutions-impact-on-brain">Air pollutions impact on brain</h2>



<p>In a recent study, researchers from the Universities of <a href="https://www.uni-rostock.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rostock</a>, Bonn, and <a href="https://www.uni.lu/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Luxembourg</a> have shed light on an alarming correlation.</p>



<p>The experts suggest systemic inflammation, spurred by an upsurge in monocytes (a type of white blood cells), could be a significant conduit for the effects of PM2.5 exposure on cognitive impairment.</p>



<p>This study, published in the journal <em>Alzheimer's &amp; Dementia</em>, could indeed change the way we perceive air <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-linked-to-a-surge-in-hospital-emergency-visits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a>.</p>

<p>PM2.5, impossibly small airborne particles, can effortlessly infiltrate our lungs and potentially our bloodstream, thereby posing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-is-fueling-more-intense-and-dangerous-thunderstorms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">significant health risks</a>. </p>



<p>Perpetual exposure to poor air quality has been connected to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, prompting air pollution to be recorded as a modifiable risk factor in the Lancet Commission's <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(24)01296-0/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recent report</a> on dementia prevention, intervention, and care.</p>



<p>However, the complex mechanisms explaining how PM2.5 affects cognitive function remain elusive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-poor-air-quality-and-cognitive-decline">Poor air quality and cognitive decline</h2>



<p>Contrary to the majority of studies focusing on cognitive decline in older people, emerging evidence indicates that even younger adults could be affected by chronic low-level exposure to PM2.5. </p>



<p>This broader demographic exploration could potentially unravel how early and mid-life exposure may impact long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-impacts-brain-development-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cognitive outcomes</a>. Intrigued by this, the researchers examined data from more than 66,000 participants in the Dutch Lifelines cohort.</p>



<p>The experts integrated adult participants' blood profiles and cognitive testing results spanning a decade (2006-2015) with air pollution data at their homes. This analysis led to fresh insights regarding the unexplored mechanisms linking PM2.5 exposure and brain health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-air-pollution-impact-brain">How does air pollution impact brain?</h2>



<p>The researchers discovered that PM2.5 exposure correlates with a decline in cognitive processing time (CPT) - how swiftly our brains can react.</p>



<p>Intriguingly, an upswing in white blood cell counts, especially monocytes - the linchpin in our body’s immunity responses - mediated a significant part of this effect.</p>



<p>“Systemic inflammation may act as a key intermediary, linking PM<sub>2.5</sub>&nbsp;exposure to impaired cognitive function,” explained Dr. Benjamin Aretz, research scientist at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ukbonn.de/patient_innen/international/english/information-for-patients/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University Hospital Bonn</a>&nbsp;and first author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unraveling-the-missing-link">Unraveling the missing link</h2>



<p>While PM2.5 can directly infiltrate the brain by crossing the blood-brain barrier, sparking local inflammation, this research emphasizes a wider, systemic inflammation occurring from exposure. </p>



<p>“We hypothesise that the number of white blood cells rise in response to pollutants,” said Professor Gabriele Doblhammer, group leader at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dzne.de/en/research/research-areas/population-health-sciences/forschungsgruppen/doblhammer/research-areasfocus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DZNE in Rostock</a>.</p>



<p>“Inflammation was already shown to play an important role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Hence, the inflammation we see in response to air polution may disrupt immune functions in the brain, thereby indirectly impairing cognitive health.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prevention-is-the-best-cure">Prevention is the best cure</h2>



<p>As we approach an era marked by aging populations and rapid urbanization, understanding and addressing the role of air pollution in brain diseases is becoming important. </p>



<p>“Given the strong correlation between air pollution and cognitive deficits, further studies are essential to pinpoint which pollutants and cellular mechanisms mediate this effect,” said&nbsp;Professor Michael Heneka, director of the&nbsp;Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine&nbsp;(<a href="https://www.uni.lu/lcsb-en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LCSB</a>) at the University of Luxembourg and senior author of the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the end, the invisible enemy is not invincible. By unveiling the mysteries of PM2.5, we can equip ourselves with the knowledge to combat the ecological threats that loom over our cognitive health.</p>



<p>We find ourselves at the fascinating confluence of science, health, and environment, and it is our collective responsibility to champion the cause of cleaner air for better cognitive futures. </p>

Air pollution exposure slows down the brain's processing speed

<p>Scientists have pinpointed the age of the moon's oldest and largest impact basin, the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin, to over 4.32 billion years ago.</p>



<p>The research is shedding new light on the early history of asteroid and comet impacts on the moon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-basin-on-the-far-side-of-the-moon">Basin on the far side of the moon</h2>



<p>Both the Earth and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-earth-get-its-moon-a-new-theory-has-emerged/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moon</a> have been bombarded by space objects since their formation, leaving behind craters and basins. </p>



<p>However, the exact timing of some of the earliest and largest of these impact events has remained a mystery - until now.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A team of scientists led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.manchester.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Manchester</a> believes they have dated the formation of the massive South Pole-Aitken basin, located on the far side of the moon and stretching over 2,000 kilometers, through analysis of a lunar meteorite.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oldest-impact-basin-on-the-moon">Oldest impact basin on the moon</h2>



<p>The research, published in the journal <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41550-024-02380-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature Astronomy</em></a>, focused on the analysis of a lunar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-meteorites-can-be-traced-to-three-asteroid-families/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meteorite</a> called Northwest Africa 2995, found in Algeria in 2005. </p>



<p>This meteorite is classified as a regolith breccia, which is a type of rock formed by fragments fused together under heat and pressure. It contains key clues about the age of the South Pole-Aitken basin.</p>



<p>Study co-author Joshua Snape is a research fellow at the University of Manchester.</p>



<p>“Over many years, scientists across the globe have been studying rocks collected during the Apollo, Luna, and Chang'e 5 missions, as well as lunar meteorites, and have built up a picture of when these impact events occurred,” explained Snape.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-bombardment-on-the-moon">Impact bombardment on the moon </h2>



<p>According to Snape, the long-held consensus has been that the moon experienced a period of intense bombardment between 4.2 and 3.8 billion years ago.</p>



<p>However, by analyzing the uranium and lead levels in mineral and rock fragments within the Northwest Africa 2995 meteorite, the team concluded that the SPA basin likely formed 120 million years earlier than previously thought - around 4.32 to 4.33 billion years ago.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This finding weakens the argument that the moon's bombardment was concentrated within a narrow period and instead suggests a more gradual process of impacts over a longer span of time.</p>



<p>“Constraining the age of the South-Pole Aitken basin to 120 million years earlier weakens the argument for this narrow period of impact bombardment on the moon and instead indicates there was a more gradual process of impacts over a longer period,” Snape said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dating-the-moon-s-oldest-impact-basin-nbsp">Dating the moon's oldest impact basin&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To determine the basin's age, the researchers compared the data gathered from the meteorite to findings from NASA's Lunar Prospector mission, which orbited the moon between 1998 and 1999.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The mission studied the moon's surface composition, allowing the team to identify chemical similarities between the meteorite and rocks within the SPA basin. This comparison confirmed their link, supporting the new age estimate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-earth-s-early-history">Understanding Earth’s early history</h2>



<p>Study senior author Romain Tartese, an astrophysicist at the University of Manchester, noted that the implications of this research extend far beyond the moon.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We know that the Earth and the moon likely experienced similar impacts during their early history, but rock records from the Earth have been lost,” said Tartese.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We can use what we have learned about the moon to provide us with clues about the conditions on Earth during the same period of time.”</p>

<p>While this study presents a major breakthrough, there is more work to be done. Lead author Katherine Joy, an astronomer at the University of Manchester highlighted the need for further investigation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The proposed ancient 4.32 billion year old age of the South Pole-Aitken basin now needs to be tested by sample return missions collecting rocks from known localities within the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/man-in-the-moon-craters-are-200-million-years-older-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crater</a> itself,” she said.</p>

<p>His daughter, filled with curiosity, immediately wanted to know more about this fascinating phenomenon.  </p>



<p>Digging deeper into the science of bee vision, Shipman - who is a research communicator at <a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Carolina State University</a> - found that bees see flowers in a way that is truly unique - and arguably even more beautiful than how we see them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-color-vision-of-bees">Color vision of bees</h2>



<p>Humans are capable of seeing light in wavelengths ranging from about 390 to 750 nanometers. This range encompasses the spectrum of colors we perceive, from violet through to red.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Bees, like many other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-insect-decline-what-are-the-causes-and-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a>, have a visual range of approximately 300 to 650 nm. This difference means that while bees cannot see red, they can see ultraviolet light, a part of the spectrum that is invisible to human eyes.</p>



<p>Bees' ability to distinguish between light and dark allows them to detect edges with ease. This skill helps them recognize different shapes, although they might struggle with shapes that have smooth lines, like circles and ovals.</p>

These patterns often highlight “landing zones,” directing bees toward the parts of the flower that contain nectar and pollen. </p>



<p>For the bees, this guidance means an easier time locating food, while for the flower, it increases the likelihood that pollen will cling to a bee and be carried to another flower, aiding in reproduction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-do-we-know-what-bees-can-see">How do we know what bees can see?</h2>



<p>Understanding what bees see has been a subject of scientific curiosity for years. One of the methods researchers have used involves training bees to respond to specific colors through behavioral experiments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For example, scientists would set up feeders containing sugar water near colored targets - such as a yellow one.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Over time, the bees learned to associate the yellow target with the food, returning to it even when the sugar water was removed.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The bees would still choose the yellow target over others, even when presented with gray options, indicating that they could distinguish the color.</p>

<p>Another way scientists have uncovered what bees can see is by examining the photoreceptors in their eyes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By exposing bees to various wavelengths of light, researchers have been able to identify which wavelengths trigger signals in the bees' photoreceptors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A lack of response to a particular wavelength suggests that the light is outside of the bee’s visual spectrum.</p>

<p>Over a century ago, on a quiet morning in an area of Siberia called Tunguska, the sky erupted with a flash brighter than the sun. An explosion shook the ground, leaving those who witnessed it both awestruck and terrified. They had just seen Earth's most recent major asteroid impact event.</p>



<p>“A collision of a NEO with Earth is the only natural disaster we now know how humanity could completely prevent” said NASA Planetary Defense Officer Lindley Johnson. </p>



<p>“We must keep searching for what we know is still out there, and we must continue to research and test Planetary Defense technologies and capabilities that could one day protect our planet’s inhabitants from a devastating event.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-tunguska-asteroid-impact-event">The Tunguska asteroid impact event</h2>



<p>The morning of June 30, 1908, began like any other day, but was soon abruptly disrupted by a brilliant fireball that streaked across the sky.</p>



<p>A thunderous boom followed, marking the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nuclear-winter-dinosaurs-were-likely-killed-by-dust/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">catastrophic collision</a> of an asteroid with Earth's atmosphere. This event, christened the Tunguska event, left an indelible imprint on human history and underscored the dangers that lurk in our cosmic vicinity.</p>



<p>In 1927, the first scientific expedition to the Tunguska site was led by the well-known geologist Dr. Leonid A. Kulik from the Soviet Academy of Sciences.</p>



<p>His work, albeit 20 years later, documented the massive destruction caused by the asteroid's explosion in the air.</p>



<p>The asteroid impact event at Tunguska wiped out around 80 million trees across a vast area of 830 square miles, hitting the Evenki people hard, as their livelihoods relied on their reindeer herds.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atmospheric-explosion-or-direct-impact">Atmospheric explosion or direct impact?</h2>



<p>Dr. Kulik's analysis showed that the object, a bolide about 130 feet wide, entered Earth's atmosphere at a 30-degree angle.</p>



<p>He thinks the asteroid blew up in mid-air at around six miles high, creating a powerful shock wave and heat blast that could flatten forests and send seismic waves felt hundreds of miles away.</p>



<p>Further investigations found microparticles that suggested the bolide was likely an asteroid from space.</p>



<p>The Tunguska event wasn't just a one-off; archaeologists have discovered signs of other airburst events throughout history.</p>



<p>While smaller asteroids usually break apart harmlessly in the atmosphere, bigger ones like the Tunguska asteroid can pose a real risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-planetary-defense-coordination-office-pdco">Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO)</h2>



<p>Fast forward to today, and we definitely haven’t forgotten the lessons from Tunguska. The launch of <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/planetary-science/programs/planetarydefense/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA's PDCO</a> in 2016 was a big step forward in protecting Earth from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-equivalent-of-a-blindfolded-full-court-shot-caused-the-dinosaur-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential asteroid hits</a>.</p>



<p>The PDCO focuses on spotting Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), sending out warnings, and coordinating global defense plans.</p>



<p>Now, let’s talk about an impressive achievement: the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/dart/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DART</a>) mission. Launched on November 23, 2021, DART set out to show off a technique called kinetic impact.</p>



<p>DART hit its target -- the binary asteroid system of Didymos and its smaller buddy, Dimorphos -- at a staggering speed of 14,000 miles per hour, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dart-mission-debris-will-create-a-human-made-meteor-shower/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">successfully changing its path</a>.</p>



<p>On September 26, 2022, DART's impact even slowed Dimorphos' orbit around Didymos by 32 minutes, way <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dart-impact-sent-dimorphos-didymos-asteroid-into-chaotic-unpredictable-tumble/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more than anyone expected</a>!</p>

Cosmic impacts, like the asteroid strike that created the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-chicxulub-caused-dinosaurs-extinction-event-traced-to-origin-kuiper-belt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chicxulub crater</a> in Mexico 65 million years ago, wiped out the dinosaurs and 75% of Earth's species.</p>



<p>Then there's the Meteor Crater in Arizona, which is about 50,000 years old and shows just how powerful these impacts can be.</p>



<p>Ancient cosmic events have also played a huge role in shaping human civilization. Take the 12,800-year-old comet impact in Syria during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/did-a-cosmic-airburst-set-the-world-on-fire-12800-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Younger Dryas period</a> or the airburst asteroid that devastated the ancient city of Tall el-Hamman in Jordan. These events show just how deep and lasting their effects can be on societies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-frontier-in-planetary-defense">Next frontier in planetary defense</h2>



<p>While the Tunguska event stands as a stark reminder, our response capabilities have matured dramatically. NASA's PDCO continues to monitor NEOs that come within 30 million miles of our orbit.</p>



<p>The success of the DART mission offers a blueprint for future defense strategies and lays the groundwork for more sophisticated and reliable planetary defense methods.</p>



<p>Public awareness and involvement are crucial to an effective planetary defense strategy. With the United Nations declaring June 30 as <a href="https://www.un.org/en/observances/asteroid-day" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Asteroid Day</a>, there is an effort to educate and involve people worldwide in this crucial mission.</p>



<p>Moreover, fostering a sense of shared responsibility, encouraging aspiring scientists and engineers, and enabling international collaboration are all steps in the right direction.</p>

<p>In a remarkable and lengthy study, scientists embarked on a fascinating journey to understand this relationship. They closely monitored a single person's brain activity, physical activity, mood and lifestyle for a whopping five months.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-after-daily-activities">Brain after daily activities</h2>



<p>"We wanted to go beyond isolated events. Our behavior and mental states are constantly shaped by our environment and experiences," says research leader Ana Triana. </p>



<p>Yet, we know little about the response of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-echoes-todays-activities-change-your-behavior-for-weeks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain functional connectivity</a> to environmental, physiological, and behavioral changes on different timescales, from days to months.</p>



<p>"To truly understand the brain, we need to look at how it responds and evolves over time, influenced by our environment, experiences, and daily habits." </p>



<p>Triana wasn't just leading the research; she was the subject, lending a unique, deeply personal perspective to the study.</p>



<p>Findings from this investigation unveil that our brains don't just react in knee-jerk, immediate responses to daily events. </p>



<p>Indeed, the brain seems to have a 'memory' of sorts. It evolves according to sleep patterns, physical activity, mood, and even respiratory rate over several days.</p>



<p>If you thought a restless night or an intense workout only had immediate, short-term effects, think again. These experiences could still be impacting your brain -- and your attention, cognition, and memory -- well into the next week.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-connectivity">Brain's connectivity</h2>

<p>"At the beginning, it was exciting and a bit stressful. Then, routine settles in and you forget," says Triana. Data from the devices and twice-weekly brain scans were complemented by qualitative data from mood surveys.</p>



<p>The researchers from <a href="https://www.aalto.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aalto University</a> and the <a href="https://www.oulu.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oulu</a> identified two distinct response patterns in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-our-brain-divide-the-day-into-different-chapters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a>: a short-term wave, lasting under seven days, and a long-term wave up to fifteen days. </p>



<p>These waves reflected the brain's quick adaptability on one hand and more gradual, lasting effects on the other.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-mental-health">Implications for mental health</h2>



<p>This study holds significant implications for our understanding of mental health and well-being. </p>

<p>“The animal is a little smaller than the size of your palm and has a question-mark shape in the middle of its body that distinguishes between the left and right side,” Evans explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“There aren't any other fossils from this time that have shown this type of organization so definitively. This is especially interesting as this is also one of the first animals that was capable of moving on its own.”</p>

<p>Researchers believe <em>Quaestio</em> moved along the seafloor much like a “marine Roomba,” feeding on nutrients from microscopic organisms and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-and-imprint-new-era-dna-transformation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a>. </p>



<p>Evidence of this movement was preserved in fossilized rock slabs that display impressions of the animal along with its trace fossils.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The texture of the preserved mat, where <em>Quaestio</em> left its trails, reveals the organic richness of the early seafloor ecosystem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exciting-discovery-in-nilpena-ediacara-national-park">Exciting discovery in Nilpena Ediacara National Park</h2>



<p>While Nilpena Ediacara National Park is already famous for its fossil beds, the discovery of <em>Quaestio</em> marks a major milestone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The excavation team, which included researchers from institutions like <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a>, the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a>, and the <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au/front/international?adobe_mc_sdid=SDID%3D0538AE6BAFB85DBC-5DAAA905774B3C95%7CMCORGID%3DBA023B045D5A83160A495E49%40AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1728979378&amp;adobe_mc_ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Adelaide</a>, made a critical discovery when they found clear evidence of the creature's movement. </p>



<p>“One of the most exciting moments when excavating the bed where we found many <em>Quaestio</em> was when we flipped over a rock, brushed it off, and spotted what was obviously a trace fossil behind a <em>Quaestio</em> specimen - a clear sign that the organism was motile; it could move,” said co-author Ian Hughes, a Harvard University graduate student.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earliest-animal-life-on-earth">Earliest animal life on Earth</h2>



<p>For more than 20 years, the team has been guided by Mary Droser, distinguished professor of geology at UC Riverside. Droser has led excavations in the outback, and this latest discovery offers new insights into how animal life unfolded on Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It’s incredibly insightful in terms of telling us about the unfolding of animal life on Earth,” Droser remarked.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Nilpena fossil record allows scientists to study the processes that shaped the origins of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/complex-life-emerged-1-5-billion-years-earlier-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complex life</a>, from the earliest evolutionary developments to the events leading to species extinction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-programming-in-the-earliest-animals">Genetic programming in the earliest animals</h2>



<p>The discovery of <em>Quaestio simpsonorum</em> is particularly important because it sheds light on early animal development.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Evans noted that determining the gene expressions needed to build these forms provides a new method for evaluating the mechanisms responsible for the beginnings of complex life on this planet.</p>



<p>The left-right asymmetry exhibited by <em>Quaestio</em> is mirrored in modern animals, suggesting that the same genetic programming has been at work for over half a billion years.</p>



<p>This finding is not only a major breakthrough in understanding early evolutionary processes but also provides a unique window into life during the Ediacaran period.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team believes that studying these ancient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossils-capture-a-turning-point-in-the-evolution-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a> will continue to yield new insights into how complex life evolved and adapted on Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-growing-legacy-and-ongoing-excavations">A growing legacy and ongoing excavations</h2>



<p>Nilpena Ediacara National Park, which opened to the public in 2023, is in the process of being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This recognition is largely due to the work and dedication of Mary Lou Simpson and Antony Simpson, founders of the <a href="https://ediacarafoundation.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flinders Ranges Ediacara Foundation</a>. The discovery of <em>Quaestio simpsonorum</em>, named in their honor, is one of many exciting finds that have emerged from the park’s 150,000-acre fossil beds.</p>



<p>Although researchers have been studying this area for decades, new discoveries continue to be made.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We’re still finding new things every time we dig,” Hughes said. This park, one of the world’s earliest ecosystems, continues to astonish scientists with its rich and diverse fossil record.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These ancient discoveries offer invaluable insights into the earliest chapters of animal evolution and continue to fuel the quest to understand the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-clues-about-the-origins-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">origins of life</a> on Earth.</p>

<p>Are diamonds our best hope to save the planet from overheating? It seems unrealistic, right? Yet, a cross-disciplinary team composed of climatologists, meteorologists, and Earth scientists suggest that this may be the case. </p>



<p>The researchers have explored the potential for using diamond dust, ejected from an airplane into the atmosphere, as a potential solution to reverse global warming.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-to-cooling-the-planet">Key to cooling the planet</h2>



<p>For years, scientists have warned that our planet is nearing or possibly even past a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-summer-of-2024-could-make-it-the-hottest-year-on-record/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climatic tipping point</a> - a point of no return. They caution that our warming planet has disrupted and continues to influence global weather patterns, a situation that could worsen as temperatures continue to rise.</p>



<p>Experts agree that something drastic needs to be done, and quickly. Simply curbing greenhouse gas emissions or removing carbon from the atmosphere, while critically important, might not be enough. </p>



<p>We are forced to consider more radical solutions to not just slow the warming, but to actively cool the Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-injecting-aerosols-into-the-atmosphere">Injecting aerosols into the atmosphere</h2>



<p>The scientific community seems to favor one particular strategy for this active cooling approach: injecting aerosols into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-is-expected-to-exceed-the-1-5c-warming-limit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">excess heat</a> back into space.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The current frontrunner for this job has been sulfur dioxide, largely due its natural occurrence in our atmosphere from volcanic eruptions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>We understand to a degree how sulfur dioxide behaves in our atmosphere, but there's a downside - it could instigate worldwide acid rain, damage the ozone layer, and likely cause unpredictable weather changes in the lower atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diamond-dust-a-shimmering-solution">Diamond dust: A shimmering solution</h2>



<p>Considering the potential risks of sulfur dioxide, the researchers pondered: What if there's a better aerosol choice? </p>



<p>To satisfy this curiosity, the experts created a 3D climate model to assess the impacts of adding different types of aerosols to our atmosphere. The study was conducted in the <a href="https://iac.ethz.ch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science</a> at ETH Zurich.</p>



<p>The researchers evaluated how these particles would interact with light and heat, their longevity in the air, their potential to group together, and how they would eventually fall back to Earth.</p>



<p>Seven potential candidates, including calcite, diamond, aluminum, silicon carbide, anatase, rutile, and sulfur dioxide, were put to the test. This large-scale experiment revealed a surprising winner: diamond dust.</p>



<p>The team concluded that diamond dust particles would reflect the most light and heat, remain aloft for suitable lengths of time, and are less likely to clump together to retain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat</a>. </p>



<p>An important bonus is that they are chemically inert, reducing the potential to create acid rain - a significant problem with sulfur dioxide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cost-of-diamond-dust">Cost of diamond dust</h2>



<p>The idea of reflecting sunlight with diamond dust seems almost whimsically futuristic. Don’t put your sunglasses on just yet.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team's model recommends injecting about 5 million tons of synthetic diamond dust into the atmosphere each year to cool the Earth by approximately 1.6°C in 45 years. This may sound manageable until we talk about the price tag - an estimated $200 trillion. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-technological-and-logistical-challenges">Technological and logistical challenges</h2>



<p>Despite its promise, implementing the diamond dust approach presents significant technological and logistical challenges. </p>



<p>The process of creating and synthesizing diamond dust on such a massive scale requires advancements in current manufacturing technologies and infrastructure. </p>



<p>Furthermore, the operational aspect of deploying 5 million tons of diamond dust annually involves developing specialized aircraft or spacecraft capable of dispersing these particles at the requisite altitude on a global scale. </p>



<p>It's a complex endeavor that demands international cooperation, extensive research and development, and a robust framework for governance to oversee and manage potential geopolitical tensions that could arise from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperatures-increase-scientists-plan-slow-down-rising-heat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unilateral climate interventions</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-the-best-climate-solution">Finding the best climate solution</h2>



<p>While diamond dust may not be the immediate answer to our warming crisis due to its exorbitant cost, this highlights the wide-ranging and creative solutions scientists are currently exploring. </p>



<p>As we inch closer to the precipice of irreversible climate change, every option should be on the table.</p>



<p>Now, the question to ponder is how much are we willing to pay to preserve the only planet we call home? What's the price tag on Earth's survival?</p>



<p>Ultimately, it's not just about finding the most effective solution, but the most sustainable one. Until then, the search goes on. Because, after all, diamonds may be forever, but so are the consequences of our choices.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
