<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

NASA announces discovery of life on Mars with high degree of confidence

<p>Our climate is changing, temperatures are rising, and research reveals that it's affecting two-thirds (66%) of the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in Earth's tropical forests. </p>



<p>Sounds worrying, right? These KBAs are critical spots on our globe that harbor and nurture various species along with their habitats.</p>



<p>This profound study analyzed three decades of temperature conditions tucked beneath the forest canopies in these world-wide tropical KBAs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shift-in-kba-temperature">Shift in KBA temperature</h2>



<p>The results might raise your eyebrows. A whopping 66% of these tropical KBAs have started flirting with new temperature regimes. </p>



<p>That means over 40% of the temperature measurements now fall outside the range previously recorded there.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, the remaining 34% of these locations still enjoy their old temperature regimes. These places could turn into crucial hideaways for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-light-sustains-biodiversity-over-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>, the researchers conjecture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-in-tropical-forests">Biodiversity in tropical forests</h2>



<p>The research, published right on the heels of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (<a href="https://www.cbd.int/conferences/2024" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COP16</a>) in Colombia, sheds some light on this critical matter.</p>



<p>“Beneath the canopy of tropical forests, a wealth of biodiversity exists in a very stable climate,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://biosciences.exeter.ac.uk/staff/profile/index.php?web_id=Brittany_Trew" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr Brittany Trew</a>, from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/esi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environment and Sustainability Institute</a>&nbsp;on Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall.</p>



<p>“As such, species there are at particularly high risk from new annual temperature regimes because they have evolved under a narrow range of conditions. They may only be able to tolerate a small margin of warming above what they’re used to.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-call-to-action-in-kbas">Call to action in KBAs</h2>



<p>Dr. Alexander Lees, a biodiversity expert at <a href="https://www.mmu.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Manchester Metropolitan University</a>, took a firm stand. </p>



<p>"The amount of political and economic capital dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity is woefully inadequate," Dr. Lees explained.</p>



<p>"Our findings show that the painful process of conservation triage -- selecting new protected areas -- must therefore consider the impact of ongoing climate changes on those sites in prioritization assessments," he continued.</p>



<p>The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework is one step towards acknowledging this problem. It proposes to conserve at least 30% of the global land area by 2030, with a special emphasis on our precious KBAs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loopholes-in-protection">Loopholes in protection</h2>



<p>Here's another nugget of truth -- KBAs do not automatically receive formal protection. That decision rests with the national governments in those respective locations.</p>



<p>This research uncovers that, among the 34% of tropical forest KBAs not yet facing new temperature regimes, over half currently fall short of protection. </p>



<p>Dr. Trew presses on the need for 'climate-smart' policies to safeguard these valuable refuges.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-outlook">Global outlook</h2>



<p>To capture the ground reality on tropical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>, researchers made use of temperature measurements, satellite data, and a microclimate model. </p>



<p>The change is more apparent in some regions than others. It's pretty high in Africa and Latin America, with 72% and 59% of KBAs entering new temperature regimes. Asia and Oceania have shown a lower shift, with only 49% of KBAs experiencing the transition. </p>



<p>A minor percentage of KBAs in Latin America and a few in Asia and Oceania have almost fully embraced the new temperature regimes.</p>



<p>In Latin America, these crucial areas sprawl across Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama, with the tropical Andes feeling the heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-communities-and-kba-protection">Local communities and KBA protection</h2>



<p>Local communities play an instrumental role in the stewardship of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs). </p>



<p>These communities, often residing in or near tropical forests, possess invaluable traditional knowledge and practices that can contribute to effective biodiversity <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effective-conservation-efforts-key-to-saving-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation strategies</a>.</p>



<p>Their involvement in conservation initiatives ensures that protective measures are culturally relevant and sustainable. </p>



<p>Collaborations between local communities, scientists, and policymakers can foster a more inclusive approach to safeguarding KBAs, empowering those who are most affected by environmental changes to participate actively in decision-making processes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tropical-biodiversity-conservation">Tropical biodiversity conservation</h2>



<p>Innovative solutions are crucial in addressing the challenges posed by emerging temperature regimes and ensuring the protection of biodiversity. </p>



<p>Technological advancements, such as remote sensing and machine learning models, can enhance our ability to monitor and predict changes within KBAs with increased precision. </p>



<p>Moreover, global networks and partnerships can facilitate the exchange of knowledge and resources needed to implement adaptive management practices. </p>



<p>By embracing both cutting-edge technologies and integrative conservation approaches, we can develop robust strategies that balance ecological preservation with the needs of society, driving forward a sustainable future for tropical forests and their irreplaceable ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-kbas-in-tropical-forests">The future of KBAs in tropical forests</h2>



<p>Now that we know the temperature beneath our tropical canopies is undergoing a significant upheaval, the question remains: What do we do about it? </p>



<p>This study is more than just a collection of statistics - it's a stepping stone towards proactive conservation efforts and climate-smart policies. </p>



<p>The shift in temperature regimes may be invisible to our eyes but has a profound impact on our KBAs and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-ocean-day-a-unified-approach-to-protect-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> they house. The ball is now in our court!</p>



<p>The study is a timely reminder for us to align our actions with the needs of our planet. As we forge ahead, the hope is to strike a balance between human progress and the wellbeing of our natural world. </p>

<p>You've probably heard the age-old belief that if your partner garners attention from others, it'll make them seem more attractive to you and save your relationship, right? </p>



<p>But what if this notion is a tad off the mark? That's exactly what new research discovered -- the reaction to third-party interest in our partners might not be what we'd expect.</p>



<p>In a deeply insightful study conducted by Prof. Gurit Birnbaum and Prof. Doron Friedman, affiliated with the Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology at <a href="https://www.runi.ac.il/en/schools/psychology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reichman University</a>, a new perspective on relationship dynamics is unveiled.</p>



<p>The focus? How your partner's popularity with others can influence your level of attraction, commitment, and competitiveness.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-choosing-relationship-partners">Choosing relationship partners</h2>



<p>Picking a life partner is, without a doubt, one of the most critical decisions we ever make. It's like signing up for a marathon -- influencing the course of your life profoundly, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/self-compassion-enhances-relationship-satisfaction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shaping your happiness</a>, and directing your journey.</p>



<p>Naturally, humans have devised strategies overtime to ease this process -- like observing how others react to potential partners.</p>



<p>This is what scientists refer to as "mate-choice copying," a phenomenon witnessed across numerous species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-partners-attention-in-relationship">Partners attention in relationship</h2>



<p>Previous research confirms that witnessing others' desire for a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dating-apps-make-it-difficult-to-find-true-love/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">potential mate</a> tends to enhance their appeal in our eyes. Interestingly, this doesn't end once we've cuffed up. </p>



<p>The evaluations continue, with our view of our partners significantly influenced by how attractive others find them. </p>



<p>But here's the catch -- this external attention can stir different reactions, depending on whether you're scouting for a partner or already in a relationship.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-current-partner-conundrum">Current partner conundrum</h2>



<p>The experiment sought to unpack what happens when the attention is shifted towards our current partners. </p>



<p>Specifically, how does observing others flirt with our partner influence our perception of their attractiveness, the effort to maintain the relationship, and the instinct to ward off competing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">attention</a>? </p>



<p>Does it fan the flames of desire, or does it make us insecure?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-study-was-conducted">How the study was conducted</h2>



<p>The research involved three separate experiments. </p>



<p>Participants in committed relationships were walked through scenarios where their partner either received unwanted attention or had a neutral interaction with a third party. </p>



<p>The participants then rated their sexual desire for their partner, their willingness to make sacrifices for the relationship, and their urge to ward off the competitor.</p>



<p>In each attempt, the exposure to external attention directed at the partner was manipulated differently. </p>



<p>The first experiment used the power of imagination, the second leveraged the immersive nature of virtual reality, while the third delved into participants' real-life experiences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revealing-results">Revealing results</h2>



<p>Across all the experiments, a recurring theme emerged: when participants observed others showing interest in their partner, their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-love-live-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">desire for their partner</a> declined. </p>



<p>Their inclination to make sacrifices for the relationship also decreased, while their urge to drive off competitors intensified.</p>



<p>“We were in Tel Aviv, when suddenly this guy shows up and asks for my girlfriend's number. I got annoyed, like, who does he think he is?! My girlfriend quickly brushed him off, but my mind was already racing with questions: What if she finds him attractive? Might I lose her? Would she be happier with him?” one participant noted.</p>



<p>"While some people might attempt to make their partner jealous by attracting attention from others, hoping to feel more desirable or secure, research indicates that this tactic can backfire. Rather than strengthening the relationship, it may undermine the very bond it seeks to enhance," states Prof. Gurit Birnbaum of Reichman University.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-relationship-dynamics-from-partners">Relationship dynamics from partners</h2>



<p>The findings from this study challenge traditional assumptions about jealousy and attraction towards your partner within romantic relationships. </p>



<p>By revealing that external interest can diminish a partner's allure rather than enhance it, the research prompts a reevaluation of how jealousy is perceived. </p>



<p>An overreliance on provoking jealousy as a method of increasing desirability could, in fact, result in emotional detachment and questioning of relational stability.</p>



<p>This apprehension suggests that cultivating a secure, affirming environment may be a more effective strategy for fostering long-term relational health. </p>



<p>Understanding these dynamics is crucial for therapists and counselors guiding couples through relationship challenges, helping them navigate beyond potentially harmful tactics in search of genuine intimacy and connection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions">Future directions</h2>



<p>The groundbreaking results from the <a href="https://www.runi.ac.il/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reichman University</a> study open new avenues for research in the field of psychology, specifically concerning mate-choice dynamics and relationships. </p>



<p>Future studies might explore the psychological mechanisms behind mate-choice copying and its variance across different cultures and relationship contexts. </p>



<p>Additionally, there is potential to delve deeper into virtual reality's role as a tool for simulating and studying complex social interactions that impact relationship psychology. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-is-this-important">Why is this important?</h2>



<p>Sure, witnessing others' interest in a potential partner might make them more attractive initially, but in a committed relationship, the same attention might have the opposite effect. </p>



<p>It seems the fear of losing a partner might drive us to create an emotional distance and limit our investment in the relationship. </p>

<p>When we think about the developmental stages of human life, we often picture our genes, or genetics, calling the shots. Now we've learned that's simply not true. Something called "selfish dna," or transposons, are in control of early human development.</p>



<p>These tiny DNA elements, known for their ability to hop around the genome, have recently been revealed as key regulators in early human development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprise-element">Surprise element</h2>



<p>Transposons have historically been thought of as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-dna-secrets-revealed-by-genomic-time-machine-and-transposable-elements/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA</a> interlopers -- virus-like entities that hijack our cells to reproduce themselves.</p>



<p>Yet, recent research flips this understanding on its head. What if these supposed intruders are not only harmless but indispensable for our early development?</p>



<p>Dr. Miguel Ramalho-Santos, Senior Investigator at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (<a href="https://www.lunenfeld.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LTRI</a>), part of <a href="https://www.sinaihealth.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sinai Health</a>, and Professor at the Department of Molecular Genetics at the <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Toronto</a>, and the study’s senior co-author, makes a fascinating revelation.</p>



<p>"But here we have discovered that these elements are not mere genomic parasites but are essential for early development,” he informs us.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transposons-in-human-development">Transposons in human development</h2>



<p>The research team focused their investigation on a particular type of transposon called LINE-1. While our genes make up less than 2% of our genome, LINE-1 elements account for an astounding 20%.</p>



<p>They found that these LINE-1 elements are critical to ensuring human embryonic cells proceed normally through early development. If inhibited, it would transport cells back to a more primitive stage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caught-in-between">Caught in between</h2>



<p>Although LINE-1 elements have been branded as 'selfish <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-mystery-50000-knots-found-in-the-human-genome/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA</a>' due to their ability to disrupt normal gene functions, the question arises -- why are these supposedly dangerous elements active in the early embryo?</p>



<p>Dr. Juan Zhang, a senior co-author, and postdoctoral fellow at LTRI, who spearheaded the research, echoes this sentiment.</p>



<p>“If transposons are bad and dangerous, why do we see them active in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fathers-diet-impacts-the-health-of-his-future-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early embryo</a>? This is an embryo that's just beginning its formation," Dr. Zhang explained. </p>



<p>"Any dangerous insertion into the genome at this point is going to be propagated throughout the rest of the development of the individual."</p>



<p>Further investigation unveiled that LINE-1 messages function as a framework to organize DNA in a cell's three-dimensional space. </p>



<p>They ensure the smooth progression of the embryo to subsequent stages by moving chromosome 19 to a gene-silencing region of the nucleus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-altering-discovery">Life-altering discovery</h2>



<p>Dr. Zhang adds that the activity of LINE-1 at a critical juncture in embryonic development is far from random. </p>



<p>On the contrary, it's a crucial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-secret-code-called-spatial-grammar-may-rewrite-genetics-textbooks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary mechanism</a>. Instead of wreaking genomic havoc, LINE-1 elements promote developmental progression. </p>



<p>“We show that LINE-1 regulates gene expression at a crucial turning point where the embryo starts to specialize its cells for various functions. Our results indicate that this not an accidental occurrence but a vital evolutionary mechanism,” Dr. Zhang continued.</p>



<p>This research could potentially redefine fertility treatments and the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine.</p>

'Selfish DNA' controls early human development, not our genes

<p>Researchers are on track to develop a new method to counteract jet lag. The experts have unlocked the mystery of a specific protein that regulates our body clock - Casein Kinase 1 delta (CK1δ).</p>



<p>Circadian rhythms are the inherent 24-hour cycles affecting our sleep-wake patterns and overall daily functions. The research may ultimately allow us to adjust these biological rhythms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-jet-lag-and-the-body-clock-protein">Jet lag and the body clock protein</h2>



<p>Led by experts at <a href="https://www.duke-nus.edu.sg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duke-NUS Medical School</a> and the University of California, Santa Cruz, the study could open new avenues of treatment related to the body's circadian rhythm.</p>



<p>The research sheds light on the potential for alternative and more effective interventions for disorders tied to the biological clock.</p>



<p>The goal is to develop innovative treatments that help realign circadian rhythms, providing relief for those affected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/children-who-watch-screens-in-bed-have-the-most-disrupted-sleep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep disruptions</a> and improving overall health outcomes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proteins-that-run-the-body-clock">Proteins that run the body clock</h2>



<p>CK1δ governs our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/syncing-brain-muscle-circadian-rhythms-slows-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">circadian rhythm</a> by tagging other proteins that play a part in our biological clock. This protein network essentially fine-tunes the timing of our circadian rhythms.</p>



<p>It is important to note that CK1δ itself can be tagged - which can alter its ability to control the proteins that run the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercising-shift-internal-clock/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">body's internal clock</a>.</p>



<p>In previous work, scientists identified two distinct versions of CK1δ, known as isoforms δ1 and δ2. While these protein variants contain very few differences - a mere 16 building blocks or amino acids - these differences critically influence the function of CK1δ.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-controlling-the-protein-and-jet-lag">Controlling the protein and jet lag</h2>



<p>Using advanced spectroscopy and spectrometry techniques, the researchers studied the tails of the proteins. The experts concluded that the unique tail sequences determine how the proteins are tagged.</p>



<p>Study co-author Carrie Partch is a professor in the Department of Chemistry &amp; Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz. </p>



<p>"Our findings pinpoint to three specific sites on CK1δ's tail where&nbsp;phosphate groups&nbsp;can attach, and these sites are crucial for controlling the protein's activity," said Professor Partch.</p>



<p>"When these spots get tagged with a phosphate group, CK1δ becomes less active, which means it doesn't influence our circadian rhythms as effectively. Using high-resolution analysis, we were able to pinpoint the exact sites involved - and that's really exciting."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protein-variants-may-influence-jet-lag">Protein variants may influence jet lag </h2>



<p>Professor David Virshup, director of the Cancer and Stem Cell Biology Program at Duke-NUS, discovered that the δ1 tail interacts more with the main part of the protein, leading to greater self-inhibition compared to δ2.</p>



<p>"When these sites are mutated or removed, δ1 becomes more active, which leads to changes in circadian rhythms. In contrast, δ2 does not have the same regulatory effect from its tail region," said Professor Virshup.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applications-beyond-jet-lag">Applications beyond jet lag</h2>



<p>CK1δ plays a significant role in other crucial processes, including cell division, cancer development, and certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coffee-grounds-could-help-prevent-neurodegenerative-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neurodegenerative diseases</a>. </p>



<p>With the newfound understanding of CK1δ's activity, new strategies could be developed for not just circadian rhythm disorders but also for a range of conditions.</p>



<p>Professor Patrick Tan from Duke-NUS elaborated on the broader implications that this research could have on our health and well-being.</p>



<p>"Regulating our internal clock goes beyond curing jet lag - it's about improving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gardening-significantly-improves-sleep-quality-in-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sleep quality</a>, metabolism and overall health," said Professor Tan.</p>



<p>Going forward, the researchers will explore how real-world factors such as diet and environmental changes can influence the tagging sites on CK1δ.</p>



<p>This could potentially shed light on how these elements affect our circadian rhythms and might be a stepping stone to practical solutions for managing disruptions caused by jet lag.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-resetting-the-body-clock">Resetting the body clock</h2>



<p>The implications of this discovery extend well beyond basic sleep regulation. For frequent travelers, overcoming jet lag has long been a challenge. </p>



<p>By targeting the CK1δ protein, the researchers are optimistic about developing treatments that can reset the body’s internal clock faster and more effectively.</p>



<p>This could mean adjusting to new time zones with ease, reducing the usual symptoms of fatigue, and enhancing overall well-being. </p>



<p>As these findings advance, the potential for creating accessible, targeted therapies that specifically address jet lag grows, offering new hope to those who are constantly on the move.</p>

<p>In a rapidly growing and changing world, the need to produce enough food for everyone has become more urgent than ever.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Pesticides have played a significant role in enabling large-scale farming, but they come with harmful side effects on both humans and wildlife, and pests are increasingly developing resistance to them.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To address these challenges and pave the way for sustainable and resilient <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-and-agriculture-are-locked-in-a-destructive-feedback-loop/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agriculture</a>, a study published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.3389/fsci.2024.1407410" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Frontiers in Science</em></a> explores the potential of induced resistance. </p>



<p>This technique, similar to a vaccine for plants, activates a plant's immune system so it can respond more effectively to similar stresses in the future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vaccinating-plants-for-resistance">Vaccinating plants for resistance</h2>



<p>Induced resistance, though studied for decades, is only now beginning to gain traction as a method for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/engineered-plant-microbiomes-the-future-of-crop-protection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">crop protection</a>. </p>



<p>“We argue in favor of a holistic approach to crop protection, which combines multiple strategies to deliver tailored solutions. Induced resistance sits in the heart of such an integrated approach,” said lead author Brigitte Mauch-Mani, a biologist at the <a href="https://www.unine.ch/etudier/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Neuchâtel</a>.</p>



<p>Currently, most crops are protected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pesticides-travel-far-and-wide-endangering-aquatic-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pesticides</a> or are bred to have resistance genes. However, pests can out-evolve these solutions over time. </p>



<p>Induced resistance, by contrast, strengthens a plant’s natural defenses, offering more sustainable, long-lasting protection that could target multiple pests and pathogens simultaneously.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-induced-resistance-works">How induced resistance works</h2>



<p>Induced resistance comes in several forms, one of which includes plants releasing compounds that attract predators of harmful herbivores.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The most well-known and studied form is defense priming. In defense priming, when a part of the plant is exposed to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-have-a-secret-weapon-for-surviving-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stress</a>, it partially activates its defense mechanisms. </p>



<p>When the plant is attacked again, these defenses are fully triggered. This form of resistance can be passed on to the next generation, potentially through epigenetic mechanisms, offering a long-term benefit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-induced-resistance-and-careful-management-nbsp">Induced resistance and careful management&nbsp;</h2>



<p>However, induced resistance doesn’t provide complete protection on its own and must be used alongside other agricultural practices. It also requires careful management to ensure the plant’s growth isn’t compromised by diverting too many resources to defense.</p>



<p>Mauch-Mani explained that induced resistance is the result of a complex network of developmental and environmental pathways in the plant.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Safe and efficient exploitation of induced resistance is not as straightforward as the introgression of a single gene or spraying a single pesticide.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The implementation of induced resistance needs to be customized based on specific crops, growing conditions, and agricultural practices.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vaccinating-plants-for-healthier-food">Vaccinating plants for healthier food</h2>



<p>The "vaccinating" effects of induced resistance could offer benefits beyond protecting plants from pests. </p>



<p>Some of the compounds that plants produce in response to induced resistance are linked to health benefits and improved nutritional quality, which could lead to healthier food.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, induced resistance can adapt more quickly to changing environmental conditions compared to traditional breeding methods, making it harder for pests to develop resistance.</p>



<p>When combined with integrated pest management, which uses natural enemies of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urgent-need-to-protect-earths-forests-from-non-native-pests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pests</a> as part of crop protection, induced resistance has the potential to significantly reduce the reliance on pesticides.</p>



<p>This could lead to more sustainable agricultural practices and longer-lasting crop protection. Further research into the epigenetic transmission of defense priming could enhance these benefits for future generations of crops.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-making-induced-resistance-a-reality">Making induced resistance a reality</h2>



<p>To make induced resistance a viable option for farmers and food scientists, more research is urgently needed. </p>



<p>This research should focus on understanding how induced resistance works in real-world conditions, outside of controlled environments, and on developing methods that can be scaled up for use in field trials and full-scale agriculture. </p>



<p>The researchers also called for legislative support to establish quality standards that would protect both producers and consumers.</p>



<p>“We strongly believe that fundamental research into induced resistance will be critical for the transition towards a truly sustainable food supply,” said Mauch-Mani.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, she emphasized the need for improved communication between researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to turn scientific discoveries into practical solutions.</p>



<p>“Governments need to create a research environment and funding climate that allows for more efficient knowledge exchange between scientists, policymakers, and industry. Like the biology underpinning it, successful exploitation of induced resistance relies on a multifaceted effort,” she concluded.</p>

<p>Do you recall who taught you in the second year of school? Some memories last a lifetime, while others are just a fleeting moment.</p>



<p>About 50 years back, a considerable leap was made in cognitive science. Scientists discovered that a particular region of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-brains-create-three-copies-of-every-memory-we-make/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brain</a>, the medial temporal lobe (MTL), stood guard over our long-term declarative memories - those of explicit details like names, dates, and events.</p>



<p>When MTL is damaged, these long-term memories get lost, leaving victims living a life of moments, unable to recall information just a minute or two beyond the arena of the present conversation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-memories-of-motor-skills">Memories of motor skills</h2>



<p>Interestingly, those very people with a damaged MTL were observed to possess the capability of learning new motor skills, not only learning them but retaining these skills for days, months, or even more. This gave a clear indicator that MTL damage did minimal to no harm to the memories of motor skills.</p>



<p>This discovery prompts an intriguing question: Where in the human brain are these long-term motor skill memories, like riding a bike or tying a shoelace, stored?</p>



<p>Is it so that our brain compartmentalizes short and long-term sensorimotor memories in distinct, specialized regions?</p>



<p>These questions have baffled researchers for years, provoking curiosity and investigations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysteries-of-motor-skills-and-memory">Mysteries of motor skills and memory</h2>



<p>Researchers from the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (<a href="https://seas.harvard.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SEAS</a>), have found that similar to declarative memories, the memories of short-term and long-term motor skills are also stored in separate regions of our brain. </p>



<p>The experts determined that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-specialized-regions-develop-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cerebellum</a> is the central hub for the storage of long-term skill memories.</p>



<p>The research, offering new perspectives on the role of the cerebellum in sensorimotor learning, was published in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em> (PNAS).</p>



<p>Maurice Smith is the Gordon McKay Professor of Bioengineering at SEAS and the principal investigator of the study.</p>



<p>“This work advances our understanding of the role of the cerebellum in sensorimotor learning and points towards the role of the cerebellum as a gateway to the formation of stable memories for sensorimotor skills, largely independent of the short-term memory systems,” said Smith.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-motor-memories-and-the-cerebellum">Motor memories and the cerebellum </h2>



<p>Past studies have shown the crucial role the cerebellum plays in motor learning, but how it contributes to the formation of short-term and long-term skill memory was blurry. </p>



<p>To look deeper into the relationship, Smith and Alkis Hadjiosif, a postdoctoral fellow at SEAS and <a href="https://www.massgeneral.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Massachusetts General Hospital</a>, reviewed previous studies on motor learning in patients with cerebellar damage.</p>



<p>There were disparities in the severity of motor learning impairments among patients with cerebellar damage across different studies. Smith and Hadjiosif theorized that these discrepancies were due to the subtle differences in the time between trials, the "memory window."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cerebellar-damage-and-motor-memories">Cerebellar damage and motor memories</h2>



<p>The hypothesis was based on the idea that cerebellar damage specifically impairs long-term sensorimotor memory. Therefore, longer memory windows would increase dependency on the impaired long-term memory.</p>

<p>For a moment, let's imagine a hectic, pressure-filled day in your life. You're wrestling with a looming deadline, a difficult boss, or perhaps an argument with a friend. Now, imagine experiencing that level of stress constantly, for an extended period. Not a pleasant thought, right? </p>



<p>Well, it turns out that such chronic stress may have more adverse effects on your health than you might think.</p>



<p>In a game-changing study, a group of researchers have discovered how sustained stress has the potential to upset the balance of gut microbiota, accelerating the progression of a common and dangerous type of cancer - colorectal cancer (CRC).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stress-gut-bacteria-and-cancer">Stress, gut bacteria, and cancer</h2>



<p>To begin with, we're not alone in our bodies. Our guts are bustling metropolises of bacteria. These microscopic citizens, collectively known as gut microbiota, help steer our immune response, and their imbalance can make us vulnerable to diseases.</p>



<p>Building on this understanding, the recent study unmasked a rather sinister nexus. It revealed how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cancer-thrives-on-human-stress-as-it-spreads-throughout-the-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chronic stress</a> can upset the gut microbiota balance and speed up CRC progression.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chronic-stress-and-tumor-growth">Chronic stress and tumor growth </h2>



<p>At the center of the stage is Dr. Qing Li, the study's lead researcher from <a href="https://en.scu.edu.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sichuan University</a> of China. With her team, she adopted a hands-on approach to explore the stress-microbiota-CRC relationship. The team started by using antibiotics to dispose of gut microbiota in test subjects. </p>



<p>“In our study, we used an antibiotic cocktail (vancomycin, ampicillin, neomycin, and metronidazole) to eradicate gut microbiota, followed by faecal microbiota transplantation to investigate whether gut microbiota was necessary for chronic stress to accelerate CRC progression," explained Dr. Li.</p>



<p>The results were startling. The researchers found that chronic stress not only fueled tumor growth but also slashed the number of beneficial gut bacteria, especially the Lactobacillus genus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reduction-in-beneficial-gut-bacteria">Reduction in beneficial gut bacteria</h2>



<p>“Stress-related CRC progression can be attributed to a reduction in beneficial gut bacteria, as this weakens the body’s immune response against cancer," noted Dr. Li. </p>



<p>"<em>Lactobacillus</em>, being sensitive to vancomycin and ampicillin, was depleted in both the control and stress groups by the antibiotic cocktail. This depletion highlights its crucial role in maintaining gut health and its potential association with CRC progression under chronic stress<em>.</em>”</p>



<p>These friendly bacteria play a crucial role in keeping our guts healthy. They are also instrumental in defending our bodies against cancer. However, they are sensitive to antibiotics and can be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ptsd-cancer-heart-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depleted by stress</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-cancer-with-gut-bacteria">Fighting cancer with gut bacteria</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the role of beneficial bacteria doesn't stop there. The researchers found that when they supplemented these bacteria during chronic stress, they observed reduced tumor formation.</p>



<p>"Through faecal analysis, we found that <em>Lactobacillus plantarum</em> (<em>L. plantarum</em>) specifically regulated bile acid metabolism and enhanced the function of CD8+ T cells. This indicates how <em>Lactobacillus</em> may enhance anti-tumour immunity," said Dr. Li.</p>



<p>However, there's a twist in the tale. Contrary to their initial hypothesis, the experts found that L. plantarum might not boost the anti-tumor immune function of CD8+ T cells by producing metabolites.</p>



<p>The research offers hope for future treatments, particularly among patients under chronic stress. "Combining traditional anti-tumour drugs with <em>L. plantarum</em> supplementation could be a viable therapeutic strategy for patients with stress-related CRC," said Dr. Li.</p>



<p>It is indeed a significant finding, considering CRC is the second most prevalent cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related death in Europe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-stress-and-cancer">Beyond stress and cancer</h2>



<p>Eager to build upon their findings, the research team plans to examine fecal and tumour samples from CRC patients. They aim to understand the variations in gut microbiota among individuals exposed to stress and those who aren't.</p>



<p>They intend to verify if L. plantarum is indeed reduced in patients under stress and explore its relationship with anti-tumor immune cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-personalized-medicine">Importance of personalized medicine</h2>



<p>The emerging evidence from this study highlights the importance of personalized medicine in the treatment of CRC. </p>



<p>Understanding the unique microbiota profile of each patient could pave the way for tailored interventions that specifically target their distinct microbiota alterations. This precision approach could involve customizing probiotic or dietary interventions to enhance gut health and bolster immune responses.</p>



<p>With advances in metagenomics and microbiota analysis, healthcare providers may soon have tools at their disposal to offer bespoke treatments that integrate microbiota modulation as part of a comprehensive cancer care strategy. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bacteria-and-anti-tumor-immune-cells">Bacteria and anti-tumor immune cells</h2>



<p>Dr. Li and her team foresee a future where interventions are not only cancer-specific but also aligned with the individual's microbiome composition, maximizing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-brain-literally-changes-based-on-daily-activities-and-lifestyle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">therapeutic efficacy</a>.</p>



<p>"Our aim is to verify if <em>L. plantarum</em> is significantly reduced in stressed CRC patients and to explore its relationship with anti-tumor immune cells," noted Dr. Li.</p>

<p>A new dawn, a fresh perspective, and a revolution in scientific research. That’s what a team of dedicated experts at Newcastle University are bringing to the world of marine biology and coral conservation. </p>



<p>The researchers have made an exhilarating breakthrough in selective breeding to combat the devastating effects of climate change on coral reefs. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breeding-corals-for-survival">Breeding corals for survival</h2>



<p>The experts have achieved the world's first successful selective breeding of adult corals for enhanced heat tolerance.</p>



<p>The team adjusted the thermostat on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-corals-can-survive-high-ocean-heat-which-could-save-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">corals</a>' survival, proving that our marine buddies can acclimatize better to harsh heatwaves, albeit in modest amounts.</p>



<p>However, the researchers emphasize that this victory isn't a one-size-fits-all solution to wiping out the impacts of future marine heatwaves under climate change.</p>



<p>It's a startling wake-up call that we need to slam the brakes on global greenhouse gas emissions. As this research confirms, these harmful emissions are the real villains putting corals on thin ice - or rather, in hot water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-maximizing-breeding-outcomes">Maximizing breeding outcomes</h2>



<p>The research is the culmination of a five-year collaboration between the <a href="https://www.uvic.ca" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Victoria</a>, Horniman Museum and Gardens, Palau International Coral Reef Center, <a href="https://www.derby.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Derby</a>, and the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>.</p>



<p>With funding from the European Research Council, the study was led by Dr. James Guest, an expert in coral reef ecology at Newcastle University’s School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.</p>



<p>“This work shows that selective breeding is feasible but not a silver bullet solution and that more research is needed to maximize breeding outcomes," said study lead author, Liam Lachs, a postdoctoral research associate at <a href="https://www.ncl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Newcastle University</a>.</p>



<p>“In parallel, rapid reductions of global greenhouse gas emissions are an absolute requirement to mitigate warming and give corals an opportunity to adapt."</p>



<p>Dr. Guest emphasized the challenges that lie ahead - from balancing the needs of wild populations to avoiding dilution of selected traits.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coral-breeding-trials">Coral breeding trials</h2>



<p>Going back in time, we find that selective breeding was a strategy adopted by humans thousands of years ago to coax desired characteristics out of animals and plants. Today, it’s playing a pivotal role in saving our precious coral reefs from the wrath of climate change and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/feeding-corals-can-help-them-recover-from-heat-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine heatwaves</a>.</p>



<p>The team carried out breeding trials targeting two distinct traits. One focused on tolerance to short, intense heat exposure while the other dealt with a less intense but long-term heatwave exposure.</p>



<p>Both trials showed promise as parent colonies selected for high heat tolerance passed this trait to their offspring, thus offering a glimmer of hope for future generations of corals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>Despite the promising results, the journey is not yet complete. The team discovered no evidence that breeding for short-stress tolerance boosted the offspring's ability to survive long-term heat stress exposure.</p>



<p>This conundrum, coupled with the lack of a genetic correlation, implies that each trait might be independently controlled genetically - a puzzle piece that needs more exploration.</p>



<p>Study lead author Dr. Adriana Humanes highlighted the road ahead, stating that we still have a long way to go before selective breeding can be successfully implemented.</p>



<p>"Considerable work remains before selective breeding can be successfully implemented. A deeper understanding is needed to determine which traits to prioritize and how these traits are genetically correlated,” said Dr. Humanes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-selective-coral-breeding-is-achievable">Selective coral breeding is achievable </h2>



<p>So, where does this leave us? Undoubtedly, the excitement behind breeding of coral reefs is justifiable. This study takes us one step closer towards securing a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/60-percent-global-coral-reefs-face-bleaching-rising-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">future for coral reefs</a>. </p>



<p>The work confirms that selective breeding for adult heatwave survival is achievable. However, the researchers are quick to point out there's still a long journey ahead. </p>



<p>The experts are rallying the troops, asking the global community to invest more in research and development to understand how to effectively implement breeding interventions.</p>



<p>The mission is clear - we must limit levels of global warming, which is achievable through urgent climate action.</p>



<p>After all, in the fight against climate change, every contribution counts - every study, every intervention, and every degree of heat that we manage to prevent.</p>

Can we save coral reefs with selective breeding?

<p>For as long as we can remember, a coin toss has been the go-to method for settling disputes, making decisions, or even determining the winner of sports events. </p>



<p>It's considered a classic example of randomness -- a true 50/50 outcome where heads or tails each have an equal shot. </p>



<p>But according to a recent study, it might be time to reconsider how random that toss actually is. It turns out, the side facing up before the toss might have a slight advantage.</p>



<p>The study, led by František Bartoš, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.uva.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Amsterdam</a>, challenges our traditional view of coin tosses as pure chance. </p>



<p>According to his team's findings, there's a small but measurable "same-side bias." </p>



<p>Essentially, the coin is slightly more likely to land on the same side that was facing up before the toss. So, if you start with heads, there's a slightly better chance you'll end up with heads.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-same-side-bias-explained">"Same-side bias" explained</h2>



<p>For years, we've accepted the idea that a coin toss represents <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-circuit-strength-predicts-math-learning-ability-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">true randomness</a>. But Bartoš and his team set out to test that assumption. </p>



<p>Their research, which builds on a physics model proposed in 2007 by Persi Diaconis, Susan Holmes, and Richard Montgomery, shows that the side facing up before the toss can influence the result. </p>



<p>The researchers call this phenomenon the "same-side bias."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-physics-influences-coin-tossing">How physics influences coin tossing</h2>



<p>The research team analyzed the mechanics of coin tossing and found that the way we flip a coin isn't as random as it seems. </p>



<p>Their model showed that when people toss a coin naturally, the force and spin they apply tend to favor the coin landing on the same side that started face up.</p>



<p>The 2007 model, now known as the D-H-M model, explained that the bias stems from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/manipulating-quantum-dance-of-spinning-electrons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">angular momentum</a> of the coin during the flip. </p>



<p>Essentially, the coin's spin makes it more likely to return to its starting position. The chance of this happening was estimated at about 51% -- a number eerily close to the 50.8% result found by Bartoš's team in their recent study.</p>



<p>That's not a huge difference, but it's enough to challenge the idea of a coin toss being a purely random event.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-over-350-000-coin-flips">Over 350,000 coin flips</h2>



<p>To test their hypothesis, Bartoš and his team conducted a massive experiment. They gathered a group of 48 people (almost all of whom were co-authors of the study) and asked them to flip coins from 46 different currencies a total of 350,757 times. </p>



<p>The sheer volume of flips allowed the researchers to observe subtle patterns that would be invisible in smaller experiments.</p>



<p>Their findings were clear: the "same-side bias" holds up across different coin types and human tossers. While the bias is small -- just 0.8% over the expected 50% -- it was consistent enough to suggest that coin tosses aren't as random as we've believed.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the study also revealed that people vary in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quick-decisions-are-often-biased-and-misleading/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how much bias</a> they introduce when flipping coins. Some individuals showed a stronger same-side bias than others, suggesting that personal flipping style might also play a role.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-this-mean-for-gambling">What does this mean for gambling?</h2>



<p>This discovery has some interesting implications, particularly for gambling, where even a slight advantage can make a big difference. </p>



<p>In a series of social media posts, Bartoš pointed out that if you knew the starting position of a coin in 1,000 tosses, betting $1 per toss, you could potentially earn $19 -- more than the casino advantage in six-deck blackjack against an optimal player, which is about $5.</p>



<p>While the bias is small, it's still enough to matter in games of chance. In fact, the study shows that knowing the starting side of a coin can give you an edge that’s greater than most players have in blackjack or even some types of roulette.</p>



<p>However, it’s important to note that this bias won’t drastically change the outcome of casual coin tosses. The difference is small enough that it’s unlikely to affect day-to-day decisions made by flipping a coin --whether you're picking teams or choosing who pays for dinner.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coin-tossing-still-a-useful-tool">Coin tossing: Still a useful tool?</h2>



<p>So, should we stop using coin tosses for decisions? Not necessarily. </p>



<p>While the bias exists, it’s minimal. In practical terms, for the average person, a coin toss remains a fair and simple way to settle disputes. The 50.8% bias is unlikely to significantly sway outcomes in most everyday scenarios.</p>



<p>Still, this research provides a fascinating insight into the mechanics of what we’ve always considered a random process. It shows how even the simplest actions, like flipping a coin, can be influenced by physics. </p>



<p>And while the bias is small, it serves as a reminder that even when things seem random, there’s often a deeper explanation behind them.</p>



<p>In the end, while your coin toss might not be as random as you thought, it’s still close enough that you can trust it for most decisions. But if you're ever at a casino, you might want to pay attention to which side of the coin is facing up.</p>

'Flipping a coin' is not a 50/50 random toss up as most people think

<p>Let's dig into the past, where around two decades ago, a giant fossil skull of an extinct elephant was discovered in the pristine terrains of the northern Indian Kashmir Valley. </p>



<p>This remarkable finding would soon send shockwaves through scientific communities. It would not just tell us more about this extinct elephant, but would also shine a light on a dimly lit chapter in elephant evolutionary history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovering-the-elephant-skull">Discovering the elephant skull</h2>



<p>Dr. Ghulam Bhat from the <a href="https://www.jammuuniversity.ac.in" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Jammu</a> led a team of experts in excavating the elephant skull. It was found lying in unison with 87 stone tools, possibly used by prehistoric humans, providing an eerie testimony to human-<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megafauna-extinction-dwarf-elephants-and-hippos-cyprus-directly-linked-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephant</a> interactions of the bygone era.</p>



<p>Recently, scientists from around the globe embarked on a quest to unravel the secrets locked in the Kashmir skull. </p>



<p>The team included experts from the Florida Museum of Natural History, the British Museum, the University of York, and the Natural History Museum. </p>



<p>Dr. Steven Zhang, a paleontologist in the Department of Geosciences and Geography at the University of Helsinki, also participated in the study.</p>



<p>"From the general shape of the skull, it's quite apparent that the elephant belonged to Palaeoloxodon, or straight-tusked elephants, among the largest land mammals that ever lived," said Dr. Zhang. "Full-grown adults easily stood around 4m tall at the shoulder and weighed 9-10 tons."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tree-of-elephant-evolution">Tree of elephant evolution </h2>



<p>However, the skull's lack of a thickened, forward-projecting crest, a feature typical of other Palaeoloxodon skulls found in India, left the scientists intrigued.</p>



<p>In recent times, the extent of this crest's development among different Palaeoloxodon species and their relative position on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-elephants-got-their-incredible-iconic-trunks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephant evolution</a> tree has sparked controversy. </p>



<p>However, some findings hint at the crest becoming more pronounced with developmental and sexual maturity.</p>

<p>"From the size, the wisdom teeth and a few other telltale features of the skull, it is evident that the animal was a majestic bull elephant in the prime of its life, but the lack of a well-developed skull crest, particularly in comparison with other mature male skulls from Europe and from India, tells us we have a different species on our hands here," noted Dr. Zhang.</p>



<p>The research team, unperturbed by the lack of the prominent skull crest, turned their attention to an obscure skull discovered in Turkmenistan during the 1950s, which was thought to represent a distinct species, Palaeoloxodon turkmenicus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-distinct-species-with-a-broad-distribution">Distinct species with a broad distribution </h2>



<p>"What's always been puzzling about the Turkmen skull is that, besides the lack of a prominent crest at the skull roof, its other features are highly similar to the already well-known European species, P. antiquus," said Dr. Zhang.  </p>



<p>"And this led a number of experts to suggest that the Turkmen specimen is simply an aberrant individual of the European species."</p>



<p>However, when the Kashmir skull was uncovered, the theory of a distinct species with a broad distribution became more plausible.</p>



<p>"But with the Kashmir skull added to the mix, it becomes clear now that the two specimens can be theorized to represent a distinct species that we previously knew very little about, with a broad distribution from Central Asia to the northern Indian Subcontinent," noted Dr. Advait Jukar, the study's lead author who is currently based at the <a href="https://www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida Museum of Natural History</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dating-the-elephant-skull">Dating the elephant skull</h2>



<p>Using advanced techniques to measure protein decomposition in the tooth enamel of the Kashmir Palaeoloxodon skull, the experts dated the skull to the Middle Pleistocene period, around 300,000–400,000 years ago.</p>



<p>An analysis of the stone tools found alongside the elephant remains further bolstered their conclusion. This age estimate matched that of the Turkmen skull, further strengthening the theory that these two skulls represent a unique species distinct from the other Eurasian Palaeoloxodon.</p>



<p>Deeper investigations revealed that Palaeoloxodon first evolved in Africa about a million years ago, presenting a narrow, convex forehead and slight underdevelopment of the skull crest. </p>



<p>The later Palaeoloxodon, best known from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gigoutella-mauretanica-best-preserved-trilobite-fossils-ever-found/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossils</a> discovered in Europe and India, sported a very wide, flattened forehead often associated with a thick crest that jutted forward from the roof of the skull.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missing-link-in-elephant-evolution">Missing link in elephant evolution </h2>



<p>The researchers concluded that with a wide, flat forehead and only a faint trace of a skull crest, the P. turkmenicus species might represent a missing link in our understanding of how these enormous prehistoric megaherbivores evolved.</p>

Elephant skull found in India adds a piece to the evolutionary puzzle

Let's dig into the past, where around two decades ago,...

<p>The black widow is one of the most feared spider species, and is widely associated with danger. This eight-legged marvel has earned its terrifying reputation through a venom that's a potent cocktail of seven distinct toxins. </p>



<p>Each toxin found in black widow venom targets the nervous system in a unique way. Among these substances, α-latrotoxin stands out. It is known to paralyze insects and crustaceans, and is poisonous to humans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-widow-s-potent-potion">Black widow's potent potion</h2>



<p>The α-latrotoxin operates by latching onto specific receptors dotted across the synapses. These are the contact points between nerve cells or between nerve cells and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/muscles-defy-aging-with-remarkable-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">muscles</a>.</p>



<p>Once attached, it triggers the uncontrollable flow of calcium ions into the presynaptic membranes of the signaling cells. This sets off the release of neurotransmitters and ushers in strong muscle contractions and spasms.</p>



<p>Despite this seemingly straightforward process, what lies beneath is a highly complex mechanism. A team of scientists at the <a href="https://www.uni-muenster.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Münster</a> has now deciphered the structure of α-latrotoxin before and after membrane insertion at near atomic resolution</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-insightful-discovery">An insightful discovery</h2>



<p>The scientific endeavor was led by experts at the Center for Soft Nanoscience, including Professor Christos Gatsogiannis in the Institute of Medical Physics and Biophysics and Professor Andreas Heuer in the Institute of Physical Chemistry.</p>



<p>To investigate the the mechanism of calcium influx into the presynaptic membrane, the experts used a combination of high-performance cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and molecular dynamics (MD) <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simulation-hypothesis-are-we-living-in-a-computer-simulation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">computer simulations</a>.</p>



<p>And their finding? The α-latrotoxin, in a fascinating display of transformation, forms a stalk - penetrating the cell membrane akin to a syringe - upon binding to the receptor.</p>



<p>This stalk carves out a small pore that functions as a calcium channel in the membrane. But there's more. MD simulations revealed that calcium ions flow into the cell through a selective gate located right above the pore.</p>



<p>This new understanding of the hidden mechanisms of α-latrotoxin provides profound insights. </p>



<p>"The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/umbrella-toxin-discovery-may-help-human-antibiotic-resistance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">toxin</a> mimics the function of the calcium channels of the presynaptic membrane in a highly complex manner, differing completely from all previously known toxins," said Professor Gatsogiannis. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-applications">Practical applications </h2>



<p>Such breakthroughs bring more than just knowledge; they open the door to a host of practical applications. </p>



<p>Latrotoxins possess considerable biotechnological potential that could support the creation of enhanced antidotes, therapies for paralysis, and novel biopesticides.</p>



<p>The research group led by Professor Gatsogiannis previously cracked the code on the structure of insect-specific latrotoxins in the venom of the black widow <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-are-closer-to-unlocking-the-secrets-of-spider-silk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spider</a> before their insertion into the membrane. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harnessing-black-widow-venom">Harnessing black widow venom </h2>



<p>While the venom of the black widow may seem like something to be avoided, its unique properties have captured the interest of scientists looking to harness its power for medical and biotechnological advancements. </p>



<p>"Taken together, these data give insight into a unique mechanism for membrane insertion and channel formation, characteristic of the LTX family, and provide the necessary framework for advancing novel therapeutics and biotechnological applications," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>Understanding α-latrotoxin’s structure and function opens doors to different applications that could turn this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spider-venom-has-hidden-biochemical-value/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">venom</a> from a deadly threat into a potential lifesaver.</p>



<p>One area of potential lies in the development of more efficient antivenoms. Current treatment for black widow bites involves pain relief and supportive care. While antivenoms are available, they are not always effective.</p>



<p>With the knowledge on how α-latrotoxin interacts with human nerve cells, researchers can design targeted antivenoms that neutralize the toxin before it causes damage to the nervous system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-therapeutic-use-of-venom">Potential therapeutic use of venom</h2>



<p>The venom’s ability to selectively bind to certain receptors also suggests potential therapeutic uses. For instance, researchers are exploring how modified versions of α-latrotoxin could treat conditions involving muscle spasms or paralysis by targeting specific neural pathways. </p>



<p>Additionally, the venom’s pore-forming mechanism could inspire new designs for biopesticides, selectively targeting pests without harming other species.</p>



<p>Research into black widow venom continues to demonstrate that even the most fearsome elements of nature can offer unexpected benefits, transforming something feared into a source of healing and innovation.</p>

<p>Have you ever wondered why the smell of freshly baked bread or sizzling bacon can pull you out of bed instantly before dawn? Or how we can distinguish between thousands of different odors and smells? The simple answer lies in the incredible and underappreciated power of our olfactory system. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sense-of-smell-and-odor-detection">Sense of smell and odor detection</h2>



<p>Commonly, we think of our sense of smell, or olfaction, as a slow sense. This notion stems from the process through which we perceive odors. </p>



<p>When we breathe in, airborne chemicals (that gives a substance its distinctive smell) enter our noses, and are subsequently expelled when we exhale. </p>



<p>A single breath, lasting 3-5 seconds, seems to limit how quickly we can detect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-nose-is-a-clever-smell-prediction-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">smells</a>. Any chemical changes that happen within a single breath end up being perceived as a single odor.</p>



<p>However, a groundbreaking study led by Dr. ZHOU Wen from the Institute of Psychology of the <a href="https://english.cas.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a> is presenting us with a whole new perspective.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blink-speed-olfactory-sense">Blink-speed olfactory sense</h2>



<p>Published in the renowned publication <em>Nature Human Behaviour</em>, the study proved that our olfactory perception could pick up subtle chemical changes within the duration of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-human-nose-perceives-the-scent-that-lingers-after-rain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single sniff</a>, challenging the earlier understanding of our sense of smell.</p>



<p>To prove this, Dr. Zhou's team ingeniously developed a sniff-triggered device (imagine a high-tech version of the "smell-o-vision"). </p>



<p>This device controls the delivery of odors with a remarkable precision of 18 milliseconds -- the length of a frame on a standard LCD screen.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smelling-and-odor-compounds">Smelling and odor compounds</h2>



<p>The team conducted five experiments involving 229 participants. Using their device, they introduced the participants to a sequence of two odors, with meticulously calculated delays. </p>



<p>The participants' objective? To see if they could distinguish between the two different smells.</p>



<p>The results were astounding. Participants could tell the difference between two odor compounds, even when the delay between each odor was a mere 60 milliseconds. That's just a third of the time it takes for your <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blinking-plays-crucial-role-vision-human-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eyes to blink</a>!</p>



<p>What's even more interesting is that the participants' ability to distinguish odors was not influenced by odor intensity, pleasantness, pungency, or the total amount of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-fruit-flies-smell-well-as-humans-with-much-less-nose-neurons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">odorant</a> molecules in a single sniff. It purely depended on the temporal separation of the two odors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-the-odor-identity">Decoding the odor identity</h2>



<p>What does all of this mean? Well, these findings hint at the existence of a temporal code for odor identity. </p>



<p>"A sniff of odors is not a long exposure shot of the chemical environment that averages out temporal variations. Rather, it incorporates&nbsp;a temporal sensitivity on par with that for color perception," Dr. Zhou states.</p>



<p>This research paves the way to study further temporal aspects of olfactory perception and develop advanced olfactory displays.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smell-and-odor-perception">Smell and odor perception</h2>



<p>The implications of this research extend far beyond the confines of laboratory settings and provide intriguing insights into how scent influences human behavior and interaction. </p>



<p>Recognizing the olfactory system's capacity to distinguish subtle chemical differences rapidly could revolutionize industries reliant on scent, such as food and beverage, perfumes, and even healthcare. </p>



<p>By leveraging a deeper understanding of temporal odor perception, professionals could refine flavor development, enhance the design of fragrances, and improve the realm of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/odors-prompt-brain-cells-to-make-decisions-before-you-know-whats-happening/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scent-based</a> therapies. </p>



<p>Furthermore, this study invites additional interdisciplinary collaboration to explore how scents play a role in forming memories and emotional states, encouraging further integration between neuroscience, psychology, and the arts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-olfactory-research">Future olfactory research</h2>



<p>While the findings present a captivating shift in our comprehension of olfactory capabilities, they also sow seeds for future research. </p>

<p>By diving deeper into this sensory dimension, scientists aspire to unlock novel applications and technologies, potentially transforming how we interact with and perceive our aromatic environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysteries-beyond-smell-and-odor">Mysteries beyond smell and odor</h2>



<p>While we now know more about the speed of our sense of smell, this only scratches the surface of our olfactory system's capabilities. </p>



<p>It opens up a whole new world of questions -- could our alertness to smells give us evolutionary advantages? How does the brain process these smells so rapidly?</p>

<p>Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>

Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. <p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
