<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>

<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>

<p>A recent study suggests that dogs could be the key to unlocking an unexpected boon for children’s mental and emotional health.</p>



<p>The secret lies in a hormone called oxytocin. You may know it as the "love hormone," but its job description extends further than just fluttering hearts.</p>

<p>Oxytocin, produced in the brain's hypothalamus and released into our bloodstream, is a mood booster. It reduces stress, makes us feel more sociable, and helps us express our emotions healthily.</p>



<p>Now, picture this: children's bodies flooding with this feel-good hormone following playful romps with none other than man’s best friend. </p>



<p>Scientists have observed higher concentrations of oxytocin in children following <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dog-and-human-brains-sync-up-during-eye-contact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">engagements with dogs</a>, as compared to when kids played alone.</p>

<p>Dr. Gitanjali E. Gnanadesikan, a postdoctoral fellow at the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>'s School of Anthropology, led this intriguing investigation.</p>



<p>The research was focused on 55 children aged between 8 and 10 years at the Arizona Canine Cognition Center. Over a series of visits, the young participants played with their pet dogs, an unfamiliar dog, and also had a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interacting-with-dogs-can-ease-physical-pain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solo play session</a>.</p>



<p>Throughout these engagements, the research team measured oxytocin levels in both the children and the dogs. The results? </p>



<p>"To our knowledge, this study provides the first evidence for an effect of affiliative social interactions with dogs on oxytocin concentrations in children," said Dr. Gnanadesikan. Both familiar and unfamiliar dog interactions led to an oxytocin boost in children.</p>

<p>What's more interesting is that it didn't matter whether the dog was a family pet or a stranger to the child, the oxytocin increase was noted in both cases. </p>



<p>However, it’s worth mentioning that the pet dogs also exhibited a surge in their salivary oxytocin levels, but this wasn’t seen in unfamiliar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-learn-better-with-praise-and-petting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dogs</a>. </p>



<p>This hints at the possibility that our canine friends may also reap the emotional benefits of these interactions, given that the child is a familiar companion.</p>

<p>For over two centuries, Ceres has captivated astronomers as the largest asteroid in our solar system. Discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi, this dwarf planet nestled in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter has long been a subject of intrigue and study. </p>



<p>Recent research, however, is shedding new light on Ceres, challenging our previous understanding of its composition and history.</p>



<p>The findings suggest that Ceres may harbor a substantial amount of water ice beneath its surface, painting a picture of an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dwarf-planet-ceres-could-potentially-sustain-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient ocean world</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rewriting-the-story-of-asteroid-ceres">Rewriting the story of asteroid Ceres</h2>



<p>Traditionally, scientists believed that Ceres was relatively dry, estimating its ice content to be less than 30%. This assumption stemmed from the observation of numerous impact craters on its surface, which indicated a lack of significant ice. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.eaps.purdue.edu/people/profile/msori.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Mike Sori</a>, an assistant professor in Purdue’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, and <a href="https://www.michaelmsori.com/people" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ian Pamerleau</a>, a PhD student at <a href="https://www.purdue.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Purdue</a>, alongside Jennifer Scully from NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), are the brains behind these new insights into Ceres' icy nature. </p>



<p>"People used to think that if Ceres was very icy, the craters would deform quickly over time, like glaciers flowing on Earth, or like gooey flowing honey," explained Dr. Sori. </p>



<p>"However, we've shown through our simulations that ice can be much stronger in conditions on Ceres than previously predicted if you mix in just a little bit of solid rock."</p>



<p>This revelation flips the script on decades-old theories. The research team utilized advanced computer simulations to model how Ceres’ craters have evolved over billions of years. </p>



<p>Their work suggests that the surface of Ceres is composed of a "dirty ice crust," which is predominantly ice mixed with rocky material. </p>



<p>This mixture allows the ice to remain stable over extensive periods, preserving the crater structures that once led scientists to believe Ceres was mostly dry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surprising-data-from-nasa-s-dawn-mission">Surprising data from NASA's Dawn mission</h2>



<p>NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/dawn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dawn mission</a>, launched on September 27, 2007, played a crucial role in this discovery. As the first and only spacecraft to orbit two extraterrestrial bodies -- Vesta and Ceres -- Dawn provided invaluable data from 2015 to 2018. </p>



<p>"We used multiple observations made with Dawn data as motivation for finding an ice-rich crust that resisted crater relaxation on Ceres," Pamerleau noted. </p>



<p>The spacecraft's spectrographic data indicated the presence of ice beneath Ceres' surface, and gravity measurements supported the idea of an impure ice composition.</p>



<p>The team's simulations accounted for a new way that ice can flow when even a small amount of rocky material is present. </p>



<p>This finding reconciles the presence of numerous craters with the high ice content, suggesting that Ceres could indeed be an icy world without the surface ice rapidly flowing away. </p>



<p>"We tested different crustal structures in these simulations and found that a gradational crust with a high ice content near the surface that grades down to lower ice with depth was the best way to limit relaxation of Cerean craters," Pamerleau added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-ordinary-asteroid">No ordinary asteroid</h2>



<p>Ceres stands out not just for its size -- about 940 kilometers (584 miles) in diameter making it the most massive object <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-chicxulub-caused-dinosaurs-extinction-event-traced-to-origin-kuiper-belt/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in the asteroid belt</a> -- but also for its complex geology. </p>



<p>"Ceres really looks more like a planet," Dr. Sori remarked. Its nearly spherical shape, along with features like craters, volcanoes, and landslides, make it a fascinating subject for planetary scientists.</p>



<p>The idea that Ceres could have been an ocean world similar to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/europa-clipper-mission-set-to-search-for-life-on-jupiters-ocean-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupiter's moon Europa</a> opens up exciting possibilities. </p>



<p>"To me, the exciting part of all this, if we're right, is that we have a frozen ocean world pretty close to Earth," said Dr. Sori. </p>



<p>This makes Ceres an attractive target for future missions aiming to explore potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-finds-17-exoplanets-that-have-oceans-and-possibly-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">subsurface oceans</a> and the conditions that might support life.</p>

<p>Understanding Ceres' composition and history offers valuable clues about the early solar system. </p>

<p>Moreover, the discovery of a dirty ice crust suggests that Ceres could have resources like water ice, which might be crucial for future space exploration endeavors. </p>



<p>This ice could potentially be used for life support or as a component for fuel, making Ceres not just an object of scientific interest but also a potential hub for human activity in space.</p>

<p>With Ceres now identified as a likely icy world, the next steps for scientists involve more detailed exploration. </p>



<p>Future missions could aim to drill below the surface to directly sample the ice and rocky mixture, providing definitive evidence of Ceres' oceanic past. </p>



<p>Additionally, studying Ceres helps scientists draw parallels with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-comets-hidden-near-earth-ice-giants-can-be-both-friend-and-foe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">other icy bodies</a>, enhancing our understanding of the conditions that lead to the formation of oceans and possibly life.</p>



<p>Dr. Sori and his team emphasize that Ceres is the most accessible icy world we know of, making it an ideal candidate for continued exploration. </p>



<p>"Some of the bright features we see at Ceres' surface are the remnants of Ceres' muddy ocean, now mostly or entirely frozen, erupted onto the surface," Pamerleau said. </p>



<p>This presents a unique opportunity to collect samples from an ancient ocean without the extreme challenges posed by more distant icy moons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-system-mysteries">Solar system mysteries</h2>

<p>It's a fact as solid as gravity. Lose a limb or sustain damage to the spinal cord, and our human bodies can't self-repair. However, some members of the animal kingdom, like the African killifish, boast an extraordinary capacity to regenerate after injury.</p>



<p>Sequencing a precise chain of cellular events, they can restore missing body parts in a way our species can only marvel at. </p>



<p>Recently, researchers at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research have made strides in understanding one aspect of this regeneration process - the timing of cellular response to injury in killifish.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-killifish-tail-regeneration">Killifish tail regeneration </h2>



<p>The study was led by Dr. Augusto Ortega Granillo, in collaboration with Dr. Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, President and Chief Scientific Officer at <a href="https://www.stowers.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stowers</a>.</p>



<p>The team investigated how the African killifish can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-zebrafish-heart-regeneration-could-transform-human-cardiac-care/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">regrow</a> its tail fin after an injury, focusing on what influences the duration and frequency of cellular engagement in the repair process.</p>



<p>“One of the greatest unsolved mysteries of regeneration is how an organism knows what has been lost after injury,” noted Dr. Sánchez Alvarado.</p>



<p>“Essentially, the study points to a new variable in the equation of regeneration. If we can modulate the rate and the length of time that a tissue can launch a regenerative response, this could help us devise therapies that may activate and perhaps prolong the regenerative response of tissues that normally would not do so.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-repair-response-after-injury">Repair response after injury</h2>



<p>What happens when the tail of a killifish gets injured? The remaining tissue has to gauge the extent of the damage. </p>



<p>Then, the right number of repair cells must be mobilized to the injury site for the appropriate duration of time. This entire process rests on the coordination of damage sensing, repair cell recruitment, and timing.</p>



<p>The team studied different injury locations in the killifish tail fin. They discovered that skin cells – not just at the injury site, but also at distant, uninjured regions – initiated a genetic program to prepare the entire organism for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/axolotls-regeneration-powers-critically-endangered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">repair response</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-extracellular-matrix">The extracellular matrix</h2>



<p>These skin cells then sustained this response, temporarily altering their state to modify the surrounding material, also known as the extracellular matrix.</p>



<p>“We very clearly defined when and where - at 24 hours post-injury and in the extracellular matrix - the transient cell state is acting in the fin tissue," explained Dr. Ortega Granillo.</p>



<p>"Knowing when and where to look allowed us to make genetic disruptions and gain a better understanding of the function of these cell states during regeneration."</p>



<p>To comprehend how the unique cellular states convey information to the extracellular matrix during the repair process, the team turned to the CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technique. </p>



<p>Profiling a gene known to modify the extracellular matrix, the experts found that disrupting the function of this gene led to a deficient speed in tissue growth.</p>



<p>“This is telling us that by changing the extracellular space, skin cells inform the tissue how much was lost and how fast it should grow,” said Dr. Ortega Granillo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-aspects-of-killifish-regeneration">Evolutionary aspects of killifish regeneration </h2>



<p>The team demonstrated that controlling the state of the cells that modify the extracellular matrix could potentially amplify regenerative regrowth. This could lead to more robust regeneration responses, opening up exciting possibilities for regenerative medicine.</p>



<p>“Our goal is to understand how to shape and grow tissues. For people who sustain injuries or organ failure, regenerative therapies could restore function that was compromised during illness or following injury,” noted Dr. Ortega Granillo.</p>



<p>However, the matter isn't closed. Understanding why certain organisms are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crown-of-thorns-starfish-gene-expression-may-help-protect-reefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prodigious regenerators</a>, while others like humans have limited regenerative abilities, is still a driving force in the field of regenerative biology. </p>



<p>By dissecting the principles observed in organisms with high regenerative capacity, researchers aim to apply these insights to enhance regeneration in humans. This could not only unveil the evolutionary aspects of regeneration but also instigate the development of innovative therapeutic strategies.</p>

<p>The Ice Age, which peaked around 20,000 years ago, offers a window into dramatic climate shifts that reshaped Earth’s oceans, landscapes, and ecosystems. </p>



<p>Researchers now believe that this frigid epoch could provide crucial insights into future El Niño weather events, one of the most influential climate patterns affecting global weather today. </p>



<p>By examining data from the last Ice Age, scientists are uncovering clues about how El Niño might behave in a warming world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-age-link-to-el-nino">Ice Age link to El Niño</h2>



<p>El Niño is a climate pattern marked by irregular warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.</p>



<p>It may seem odd to connect the frosty Ice Age and the warming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> phenomenon, but a recent study led by the University of Arizona bridges this gap. </p>



<p>The research, published in the journal <em>Nature</em>, combines data from ancient marine shells and advanced climate modeling to explore how El Niño patterns might evolve in a warming world.</p>



<p>Kaustubh Thirumalai is the study's co-lead author and assistant professor in the University of Arizona’s Department of Geosciences.</p>



<p>"El Niño is a formidable force of nature - it induces <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-risk-of-summer-droughts-linked-to-changes-in-river-flow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a>, floods, and wildfires, disrupting marine and terrestrial ecosystems across the planet, with pervasive societal impacts across numerous sectors, from agriculture to the aviation industry," said Thirumalai.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-el-nino-conundrum">The El Niño conundrum</h2>



<p>El Niño events typically recur every two to seven years. However, forecasting how these events may change in the future is a key challenge for climate scientists. </p>



<p>"There are several state-of-the-art <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperature-increase-2023-blew-past-all-climate-models/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate models</a> out there, and they suggest different El Niño responses to ongoing and future human-caused warming," noted Thirumalai</p>



<p>"Some say El Niño variations will increase, others say they will decrease - it is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon. So, addressing what might happen to El Niño is a key priority for climate science."</p>



<p>To address this uncertainty, the research team - including collaborators from the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/admissions?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_term=university%20of%20arizona&amp;utm_campaign=brand_us_tier_3_search&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw0t63BhAUEiwA5xP54fRMMjcyfERK9cf8gWAldTc6J9yx2PQFqRH-DzW1bEZJWzY7QcbydhoCyNEQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>, UC Boulder, University of Texas, Middlebury College, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - turned to the past.</p>



<p>The experts focused on the Last Glacial Maximum, a period around 20,000 years ago when ice sheets covered much of North America and Europe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-time-capsules-unlocking-el-nino-s-past">Time capsules: Unlocking El Niño's past</h2>



<p>To simulate conditions from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present day, the researchers employed the Community Earth System Model, a project primarily led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. </p>



<p>To validate this model, the team compared the results with data from tiny marine organisms called foraminifera. </p>



<p>"These beautiful, microscopic creatures, which float in the upper ocean, build shells that lock in the ocean temperature when they were alive," said Thirumalai.</p>



<p>By analyzing the shells in different sediment layers, the scientists were able to reconstruct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-ocean-water-discovery-is-unlocking-secrets-of-earths-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient ocean</a> temperatures and match them with the model’s simulations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-toward-a-warmer-future">Looking toward a warmer future</h2>



<p>The study revealed that El Niño variability was significantly lower during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-were-in-north-america-during-last-glacial-maximum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Last Glacial Maximum</a> compared to today. </p>



<p>However, as the planet continues to warm, extreme El Niño events could become more frequent and intense, leading to severe weather disruptions globally.</p>



<p>"This gives us more confidence in the model's projections for the future," noted Thirumalai. "If it can accurately simulate past climate changes, it’s more likely to give us reliable predictions about future changes in the El Niño system."</p>



<p>The research shines a light on how studying Earth’s icy past can help prepare us for the warming world ahead warming world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-impact-of-the-ice-age">Broader impact of the Ice Age</h2>



<p>The Ice Age, spanning thousands of years, was not only a time of massive glaciation but also a period of significant atmospheric and oceanic shifts. </p>



<p>During the Last Glacial Maximum, the Earth’s climate was drastically different from today, with ice sheets covering large portions of North America, Europe, and Asia. These ice sheets reflected much of the sun’s energy, cooling the planet and altering wind and ocean currents.</p>



<p>The Ice Age also influenced global weather patterns, affecting the frequency and intensity of events like El Niño. </p>



<p>As glaciers melted and sea levels rose, the redistribution of heat and water transformed ocean circulation, which in turn impacted the climate on a global scale. </p>

<p>Understanding these ancient systems is crucial because they hold key lessons about how Earth's climate responds to natural changes, allowing scientists to refine models for future climate behavior.</p>

<p>As we look to predict future extreme weather events, particularly El Niño, the Ice Age provides a critical backdrop for understanding the larger forces that govern our planet’s climate.</p>

<p>A recent study reveals a startling development for two endangered primate species in Bangladesh. Phayre's langurs and capped langurs might be headed for an unexpected twist in their evolutionary tale - hybridization.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-langur-hybridization-in-bangladesh">Langur hybridization in Bangladesh</h2>



<p>A research team led by Tanvir Ahmed, a PhD student at the <a href="https://www.dpz.eu/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">German Primate Center</a>, took on the monumental task of studying langur populations in northeastern Bangladesh.</p>



<p>Over a five-year period, from 2018 to 2023, the researchers chipped away at the mysteries hidden within these populations.</p>



<p>Out of the 98 langur groups studied, the experts discovered that 8 were mixed groups that consisted of both Phayre's and capped langurs.</p>



<p>In three of these mixed groups, some individuals presented as unique blends of the two species. But what did this mean, and does it hold any significant implications?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-evidence-from-hybrid-langurs">Genetic evidence from hybrid langurs</h2>



<p>When faced with an intriguing puzzle, every scientist knows that the key to deciphering it lies within the data's fine details. </p>



<p>Once the team collected genetic samples from these hybrid individuals, they were transported to the lab at the German Primate Center for analysis. </p>



<p>The tests confirmed that there had been an instance of hybridization. In this case, the hybrid langur was born to a capped langur mother and a Phayre's langur father. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ripple-effect-of-langur-hybridization">Ripple effect of langur hybridization</h2>



<p>Hybridization among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/small-primates-struggle-more-with-extreme-temperatures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a> - the blending of two different species - is a rare phenomenon in itself. Typically, it only occurs where two related species find their territories overlapping. </p>



<p>Unnatural activities such as deforestation, trapping, and hunting can lead to population thinning. This restricts the movement of individuals, and thus, can unintentionally spur such hybridization. </p>



<p>"The existence of fertile hybrids is particularly alarming because it suggests that gene flow between these two endangered species could irreversibly affect their future genetic composition," said Tanvir Ahmed, lead author of the study. </p>



<p>"This is not just a local problem. When habitats are destroyed, animals mix unnaturally and form mixed groups and hybridization might occur. This can even mean the extinction of one or both species," noted study co-author and lead scientist Christian Roos.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-conservation-an-urgent-priority">Forest conservation: An urgent priority</h2>



<p>The study also revealed that forests which are better protected host bigger langur populations.</p>



<p>However, the situation is never as simple as it seems. Even these protected forests are often too small and fragmented to guarantee the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primate-bonds-are-not-just-about-love-theyre-strategic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">survival of the species</a>. </p>



<p>Ahmed emphasized that forest conservation should become a national priority. Otherwise, we risk losing these langurs and a significant chunk of Bangladesh's biodiversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-langur-hybridization">Impact of langur hybridization</h2>



<p>Ongoing research efforts are needed to understand the full impact of hybridization on the endangered langurs.</p>



<p>"This study is a wake-up call. We need more data to develop effective long-term conservation strategies," said Dietmar Zinner, a co-author of the study. </p>



<p>The survival of the less than 500 Phayre's langurs and 600 capped langurs in northeast Bangladesh hangs in the balance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conservation-for-endangered-langurs">Conservation for endangered langurs</h2>



<p>Protection is urgently needed to keep Phayre's and capped langurs from disappearing forever. The focus should be on preserving and restoring their natural habitats, making sure these amazing primates have enough resources and space to thrive. </p>



<p>This means tackling issues like deforestation and illegal hunting that harm their homes and split up their populations.</p>



<p>Working with local communities is crucial; education and awareness can help create a strong culture of conservation and sustainable living. In addition, better laws and enforcement are needed to guard against habitat destruction, ensuring a safer future for these vulnerable species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collaboration-on-a-global-scale">Collaboration on a global scale</h2>



<p>The findings from Bangladesh transcend national boundaries, emphasizing the need for a concerted international effort in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primates-who-are-facially-expressive-make-the-best-leaders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primate conservation</a>. </p>



<p>Establishing global partnerships, particularly with organizations specializing in primate research and conservation, can share crucial resources, expertise, and funding. </p>



<p>This collaborative approach enables monitoring and research initiatives to embrace a more comprehensive understanding of langur populations, hybridization and their ecosystems. </p>



<p>Equipped with his discoveries, Ahmed is now focusing his doctoral project on a comprehensive genetic study of endangered langur populations. He aims to explore their vulnerability to climate change, a vital step in forming an effective action plan.</p>

<p>Draco, the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Destructive Reentry Assessment Container Object mission, aims to solve one of space’s enduring mysteries: what exactly happens to defunct satellites during their fiery descent back to Earth. </p>



<p>This unique mission will gather crucial data on satellite reentries, helping scientists better understand the process while contributing to ESA’s broader goal of environmental stewardship in space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cleaning-up-space-one-reentry-at-a-time">Cleaning up space, one reentry at a time</h2>



<p>The issues of space debris are becoming increasingly pressing. </p>



<p>Keeping Earth's orbits clean and devoid of expired <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/starlink-satellites-are-stranded-in-low-orbit-after-rocket-malfunction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">satellites</a> is a necessary step to prevent the creation of more space debris. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Space Agency</a> has committed to an ambitious initiative, dubbed the "Zero Debris Approach," to combat this issue, aiming to halt the creation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-space-exploration-could-be-shut-down-by-orbiting-debris/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">space debris</a> by 2030. </p>



<p>"Reentry science is an essential element of the design for demise efforts," explains Holger Krag, ESA’s Head of Space Safety. </p>



<p>"We need to gain more insight into what happens when satellites burn up in the atmosphere as well as validate our re-entry models."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-science-of-spacecraft-reentry">The science of spacecraft reentry</h2>



<p>"That’s why the unique data collected by Draco will help guide the development of new technologies to build more demisable satellites by 2030," adds Krag. </p>



<p>Another crucial aspect of this research is its potential to advance our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/burning-up-of-satellites-severely-harms-ozone-recovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how reentries impact Earth's atmosphere</a>, especially as the frequency of launches and reentries increases. </p>



<p>By studying how spacecraft materials disintegrate at high altitudes, ESA scientists aim to develop more sustainable designs that reduce harmful by-products.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenge-of-reentry-simulations">Challenge of reentry simulations</h2>



<p>While it is challenging to collect data from a satellite throughout its destruction, it is currently impossible to recreate the exact circumstances on the ground. </p>



<p>"Even if it’s hard to get data from a satellite throughout its destruction, it is currently impossible to recreate the exact circumstances on the ground," says Stijn Lemmens, Draco’s project manager at the <a href="https://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Operations/Ground_Systems_Engineering/ESA_Space_Debris_Office" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA Space Debris Office</a>.</p>



<p>He elaborates, "We can use experimentation to test various materials and elements of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-travel-has-left-a-metal-mark-on-earths-stratosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">spacecraft</a> in wind tunnels at a limited scale. But it’s not yet possible to faithfully mimic the incredible velocity, amount of force, and motions of an uncontrolled reentry."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-birth-of-the-draco-mission">Birth of the Draco mission</h2>



<p>The Draco mission spacecraft is designed to be an average low-Earth orbit spacecraft, equipped with sensors and cameras that can collect data as the <a href="https://www.esa.int/Space_Safety/Clean_Space/ESA_s_Zero_Debris_approach" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">satellite disintegrates</a>.</p>



<p>"Draco needs to be an average low-Earth orbit spacecraft to make it a representative reentry," Lemmens adds. "We equip it with sensors and cameras sturdy enough to collect data as long as possible as the satellite burns up."</p>



<p>Draco’s capsule must also be indestructible, withstanding the violent destruction process and protecting the system as it transmits data. </p>



<p>Lemmens compares the capsule to "an octopus," with cables extending from it to sensors that record temperatures, pressure, and strain on the spacecraft's parts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-draco-mission-s-short-life">Draco mission's short life</h2>



<p>The final Draco satellite, weighing about 200 kg and the size of a washing machine, will not have a propulsion system nor connected navigation and communication systems. </p>



<p>Its mission is to mimic an average reentry as much as possible, using the steering capabilities of its rocket for a swift reentry. </p>



<p>After no more than 12 hours in orbit, Draco will begin its fiery descent, with its 200 sensors and four cameras recording the event.</p>



<p>Once the satellite has burned up, the 40 cm capsule will deploy a parachute, stabilize, and connect to a geostationary satellite to transmit its collected data. </p>



<p>"Draco will shine a light on many of the unknowns during satellite reentries," says Tim Flohrer, Head of the ESA Space Debris Office. </p>



<p>"It will get us out of the chicken-and-egg loop and create a different data set to calibrate our systems and models, advancing the implementation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clusters-final-mission-a-fiery-return-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zero-debris</a> technologies."</p>



<p>By shedding light on satellite reentries, Draco promises to redefine our understanding of the reentry process, assist in designing more sustainable satellites, and play a crucial role in ESA’s mission to achieve zero space debris.</p>

<p>Massive ocean-warming El Niño events played a key role in driving the largest extinction event in Earth's history, which took place approximately 252 million years ago, according to new research.</p>



<p>Scientists recently learned a great deal about the extreme environmental shifts that occurred during the Permian-Triassic period, ultimately leading to the devastation of life on land and in the oceans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unknown-cause-of-mass-extinction-nbsp">Unknown cause of mass extinction&nbsp;</h2>



<p>For years, scientists have linked the mass extinction to enormous volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia. </p>



<p>These eruptions released vast amounts of carbon dioxide, accelerating climate warming and triggering the collapse of ecosystems at both land and at sea. </p>



<p>However, one mystery remained: why did life on land, including plants and typically resilient species like insects, suffer as badly as marine life?</p>



<p>The study was published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.ado2030" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Science</em></a> and co-led by the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a> and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).</p>



<p>“Climate warming alone cannot drive such devastating extinctions because, as we are seeing today, when the tropics become too hot, species migrate to the cooler, higher latitudes,” explained co-lead author Alexander Farnsworth, a senior research associate at Bristol.</p>



<p>“Our research has revealed that increased greenhouse gasses don’t just make the majority of the planet warmer, they also increase weather and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-birds-can-handle-climate-variability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate variability</a>, making it even more ‘wild’ and difficult for life to survive.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unpredictable-climate-swings-over-decades">Unpredictable climate swings over decades</h2>



<p>The study reveals that the problem during the Permian-Triassic catastrophe was not simply the extreme heat but also the unpredictable swings in climate conditions over decades.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Most life failed to adapt to these conditions, but thankfully a few things survived, without which we wouldn’t be here today. It was nearly, but not quite, the end of life on Earth,” said co-lead author Yadong Sun, a paleoclimatologist at the China University of Geosciences.</p>



<p>The temperature fluctuations during this period were uncovered by analyzing oxygen isotopes in the fossilized teeth of conodonts - tiny, extinct, swimming organisms.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-drastic-climate-change-nbsp">Evidence of drastic climate change&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The researchers found a significant collapse in temperature gradients, particularly in low and mid-latitude regions, revealing just how dramatically the climate changed.</p>



<p>“Essentially, it got too hot everywhere. The changes responsible for the climate patterns identified were profound because there were much more intense and prolonged El Niño events than witnessed today," said Farnsworth. "Species were simply not equipped to adapt or evolve quickly enough."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-el-nino-events-nbsp">Extreme El Niño events&nbsp;</h2>



<p>El Niño events, which are responsible for major shifts in weather patterns and temperatures today, were much more extreme and long-lasting during the Permian-Triassic period.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, recent El Niño events have caused North American heatwaves and record global temperatures, such as the June 2024 heatwave when temperatures were 15°C hotter than normal.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While today's El Niño events typically last one to two years, the Permian-Triassic crisis saw Mega-El Niño events persist for much longer, resulting in a decade of drought followed by years of flooding, making it impossible for most species to adapt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-climate-in-a-state-of-crisis-nbsp">Earth's climate in a state of crisis&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Paul Wignall, a professor of palaeoenvironments at the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a> and co-author of the study, emphasized that “the climate was all over the place,” making survival difficult.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This extreme climate variability also contributed to the frequent wildfires, as reflected in the abundance of charcoal found in rock layers from that era.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An international research team has explored the profound genetic impact of hunting on northern elephant seals. The experts found genetic scars in the animals, which were once hunted to near extinction.</p>



<p>The findings of the study, published in the journal <em>Nature Ecology and Evolution</em>, reveal that these genetic effects have persisted for many decades after the seals barely escaped extinction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elephant-seals-on-brink-of-extinction">Elephant seals on brink of extinction</h2>



<p>At the turn of the 20th century, northern elephant seals were nearly wiped out by hunting, with their numbers dwindling perilously.</p>



<p>The experts noted that extensive hunting by commercial sealers between 1810 and 1860 largely eliminated the northern elephant seal from most of its geographical range, and it was considered extinct by the 1890s.</p>

<p>The world we live in is changing. And those changes aren't just affecting us humans - they're impacting the wildlife we share our planet with, too. One such creature, the famously unhurried sloth, is finding itself pinned against a wall of survival - a race against the clock of climate change it can't outrun.</p>



<p>In a recent study titled "Sloth Metabolism May Make Survival Untenable Under Climate Change Scenarios," researchers expose a challenging future for these slow-moving creatures of Central and South America. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sloths-and-their-environment">Sloths and their environment</h2>



<p>Before we dive into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-ozone-day-2024-advancing-climate-action/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dire situation</a> these animals face, let's get up close and personal with our subject matter - the two-fingered sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni). </p>



<p>It's worth noting that these creatures are built for life in both highland and lowland regions. But it's how they react to the changes in their environments that has scientists concerned.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sloths-under-climate-change">Sloths under climate change</h2>



<p>The study, led by Dr. Rebecca Cliffe from the Sloth Metabolism Research Institute (SMRI), focused on the metabolic response of sloths to rising temperatures.</p>



<p>"Sloths are inherently limited by their slow metabolism and unique inability to regulate body temperature effectively, unlike most mammals," said Dr. Cliffe. "Our research shows that sloths, particularly in high-altitude regions, may not be able to survive the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-is-likely-the-hottest-year-in-recorded-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">significant increases in temperature</a> forecast for 2100.”</p>



<p>The researchers measured oxygen consumption and core body temperature of sloths under conditions emulating projected climate changes. What they found paints a worrying picture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-feeling-the-heat">Feeling the heat</h2>



<p>Highland sloths experience a dramatic hike in their resting metabolic rate (RMR) as temperatures increase. </p>



<p>Lowland sloths, though better adapted to heat, initiate a metabolic depression - a kind of low-power mode - when temperatures move past their comfort zone. Scientists call this the "thermally-active zone" (TAZ).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-difficulty-adjusting-to-climate-change">Difficulty adjusting to climate change </h2>



<p>Fast forward to the year 2100, where the forecast predicts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-are-relocating-in-a-race-against-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature increases</a> between 2°C and 6°C in sloth habitats. </p>



<p>Highland sloths are set to bear a hefty metabolic burden. Their limited energy-processing capacity, combined with a lack of geographical flexibility, might stop them from adjusting to this heated climate. </p>



<p>And here's another hiccup: sloths digest food up to 24 times slower than other similar-sized herbivores. So, any rise in metabolic need due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-increasingly-unpredictable-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> can't easily be offset by increased food intake, making it tough for them to balance energy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-for-highland-sloths">Challenges for highland sloths</h2>



<p>The most eye-opening part of this research concerns high-altitude sloths. Their restricted ability to migrate to cooler zones and limited metabolic flexibility could push these populations toward extinction if temperatures keep climbing.</p>



<p>Lowland sloths might manage to scratch out a survival strategy by moving to higher altitudes, but for highland sloths, this option doesn't exist. </p>



<p>This biological rigidity, paired with the increased metabolic demand in hotter climates, could tip these populations into a survival crisis.</p>

<p>NASA's Cold Atom Lab aboard the International Space Station has achieved something truly remarkable. For the first time, researchers have utilized ultra-cold atoms, cooled to near absolute zero (minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit), in the unique environment of space to detect subtle vibrations around the space station.</p>



<p>By observing these minute fluctuations in the fabric of space-time, scientists could drive significant advancements in both fundamental science and future technologies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-the-cold-atom-lab">What is the Cold Atom Lab?</h2>



<p>Launched to the space station in 2018, the Cold Atom Lab is about the size of a mini-fridge. </p>



<p>Operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JPL</a>) in Southern California, the lab was <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/cold-atom-laboratory-cal" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">designed to advance quantum science</a> by taking advantage of the microgravity environment in low Earth orbit.</p>



<p>At these ultra-cold temperatures, some atoms form what's known as a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this state, atoms share the same quantum identity, and their typically microscopic quantum properties become more apparent.</p>



<p>This makes them easier to study and allows scientists to explore the boundary between the quantum world and our everyday experiences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-celebrating-a-milestone-achievement">Celebrating a milestone achievement</h2>



<p>The Cold Atom Lab team used a cool quantum tool called an atom interferometer to measure tiny vibrations of the space station.</p>



<p>This is the first time <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/edge-state-atoms-how-electrons-find-their-groove-in-frictionless-flow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultra-cold atoms</a> have been used in space to detect changes in the surrounding environment.</p>



<p>“Reaching this milestone was incredibly challenging, and our success was not always a given,” said Jason Williams, the Cold Atom Lab project scientist at JPL. “It took dedication and a sense of adventure by the team to make this happen.”</p>

<p>While devices like cell phones and GPS are based on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum science</a>, atom interferometry offers even more precise measurement capabilities.</p>



<p>Due to its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-particles-solution-gravitational-wave-mystery-bose-einstein-condensate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wave-like behavior</a>, a single atom can simultaneously travel two physically separate paths. </p>



<p>If gravity or other forces act on these atomic waves, scientists can measure that influence by observing how the waves recombine and interact.</p>



<p>Physicists have long wanted to apply atom interferometry in space. The microgravity environment allows for longer measurement times and greater instrument sensitivity.</p>



<p>However, the equipment is incredibly sensitive and was thought to be too fragile to operate for extended periods without hands-on assistance. The Cold Atom Lab, operated remotely from Earth, has now shown that it's possible.</p>

As for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-could-explain-the-rapid-expansion-of-the-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a>, it's believed to be behind the universe's accelerating expansion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-einstein-s-theory-in-new-ways">Testing Einstein's theory in new ways</h2>



<p>"Atom interferometry could also be used to test Einstein’s theory of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radical-new-theory-finally-unites-gravity-spacetime-and-the-quantum-realm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">general relativity</a> in new ways," said Cass Sackett, a professor at the <a href="https://www.virginia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Virginia</a> and a Cold Atom Lab principal investigator.</p>



<p>"This is the basic theory explaining the large-scale structure of our universe, and we know that there are aspects of the theory that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-glitch-in-gravity-expands-the-theory-of-general-relativity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">we don’t understand correctly</a>. This technology may help us fill in those gaps and give us a more complete picture of the reality we inhabit."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-quantum-science-in-space">Future of quantum science in space</h2>



<p>With this milestone, the door is open for more advanced quantum technologies in space. Nick Bigelow, a professor at the <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Rochester</a> in New York and a Cold Atom Lab principal investigator for a consortium of U.S. and German scientists, shared his optimism.</p>



<p>"I expect that space-based atom interferometry will lead to exciting new discoveries and fantastic quantum technologies impacting everyday life, and will transport us into a quantum future," Bigelow enthused.</p>



<p>To sum it all up, NASA's Cold Atom Lab marks a noteworthy advance in both quantum science and space exploration. </p>



<p>By effectively utilizing ultra-cold atoms to detect subtle vibrations aboard the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/international-space-station/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Space Station</a>, this initiative illustrates that complex quantum experiments can indeed be conducted remotely in the unique microgravity environment of space.</p>

<p>An evolutionary quirk exists in today's world, but it lives in the ocean, so most of us will never actually be able to see it with our own eyes. But that doesn't make it any less incredible! Sea robins are a species of fish that took to walking on the ocean floor instead of just swimming around like its relatives -- and ended up growing legs to do so.</p>



<p>Sea robins and their walking legs exhibit an evolutionary anomaly that has transformed it from being a usual swimmer to an outstanding walker.</p>



<p>This creature has sprouted legs similar to those of a crab, and remarkably, uses them not just for walking but for finding buried prey by "tasting" the ocean floor -- a fascinating trait not seen in their swimming relatives.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legs-of-the-sea-robins">Legs of the sea robins</h2>



<p>“This is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bizarre-fish-can-walk-and-thrive-on-land/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish that grew legs</a> using the same genes that contribute to the development of our limbs and then repurposed these legs to find prey using the same genes our tongues use to taste food -- pretty wild,” says Nicholas Bellono of <a href="https://www.harvard.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard University</a> in Cambridge, MA.</p>



<p>Intrigued by the sea robins' unusual hunting prowess, they went ahead and further studied them. </p>



<p>They found out that the sea robins could indeed detect and uncover ground-up and filtered mussel extract, and even single amino acids.</p>



<p>This oddity had observant fellow fish hitching behind the sea robins to capitalize on their knack for unearthing buried goods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-sea-robin-legs">Studying sea robin legs</h2>



<p>As the research progressed, it was found that the 'legs' of the sea robins were covered in sensory papillae. </p>



<p>They also noticed that the sea robins would scratch at the sand surface to find buried prey, like mussels and other shellfish, without visual cues.</p>



<p>This indicated that their legs were sensitive to both mechanical and chemical stimuli. </p>



<p>They even tested this by burying capsules containing single chemicals, and the sea robins had no trouble finding them at all.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-robin-genetics">Sea robin genetics</h2>



<p>Further developmental studies indicated that these papillae represented a significant evolutionary innovation, granting the sea robins a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiktaalik-fossil-discovery-sheds-light-on-how-fish-walked-onto-land/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unique niche on the seafloor</a> that other animals can't replicate.  </p>



<p>"Although many traits look new, they are usually built from genes and modules that have existed for a long time. That's how evolution works: by tinkering with old pieces to build new things," Kingsley commented.</p>



<p>A key finding from their studies identified an ancient and conserved transcription factor, tbx3a, as a significant determinant of the sea robins' sensory leg development. </p>



<p>This gene played a crucial role in the formation of the sea robins' sensory papillae and their digging behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-power-of-adaptation">Power of adaptation</h2>



<p>These researchers went beyond just studying a "fish with legs"; they also explored how this weird animal could serve as a powerful model organism to compare specialized traits and teach us about how evolution allows for adaptation to very specific environments.</p>



<p>About 6 million years ago, humans evolved to walk upright, separating themselves from their primate ancestors. Bipedalism is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/younger-storks-choose-migration-routes-that-are-social-hotspots/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">defining feature of our species</a>. </p>



<p>Sea robins and their adaptation to living on the ocean floor could provide insights into how this change may have occurred, allowing us to view evolution through a different lens.</p>

<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. <p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
