<p>For a century, Western water forecasts have leaned on a simple idea: more mountain snow means more water in rivers in the spring. But where you measure that snow matters as much as how much you measure.</p>



<p>A new analysis of more than two decades of data across 390 snow-fed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planning-for-an-uncertain-future-in-the-colorado-river-basin/">river basins</a> in 11 Western states shows that placing new instruments at strategically chosen “hotspots” consistently delivers better water supply forecasts than trying to blanket an entire basin with broad surveys.</p>



<p>In those basins, adding hotspot sites improved forecast skill by about 11–14 percent on average. By comparison, doing comprehensive basin-wide snow mapping nudged forecasts up by only about 4 percent on average. </p>



<p>The takeaway is surprisingly straightforward: measuring snow in the right places can help far more than measuring snow everywhere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-snow-matters-most">Where snow matters most</h2>



<p>Hotspots are small areas within a watershed where snow conditions punch above their weight in predicting how much water will actually reach streams months later. </p>



<p>Think of ridgelines, aspects, or elevations where snow tends to persist or melt in patterns that strongly control downstream flow.</p>



<p>Because most existing ground stations sample a tiny fraction of a basin, there’s room to improve forecasts by adding just a few stations - if they’re placed where the snow signal matters most for runoff.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-putting-snow-sites-to-the-test">Putting snow sites to the test</h2>



<p>Researchers sifted through more than 20 years of snow estimates and streamflow records, comparing two expansion strategies for monitoring: adding targeted hotspot gauges, or rely on basin-wide mapping (from aircraft or satellites) to capture total snow volume. </p>



<p>They tested both approaches against the current network of ground stations that operational forecasters use today. </p>



<p>The team treated streamflow forecasting the way a water manager would, asking how much each strategy improved the year-to-year predictive power for seasonal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-global-greening-could-drain-earths-water-supply/">water supply</a>.</p>



<p>Because different basins respond differently, they repeated the analysis for hundreds of watersheds, from the Cascades and Sierra Nevada to the Rockies and the Great Basin. </p>



<p>Across that breadth of climates and terrains, the pattern held - focused hotspot measurements typically outperformed broad coverage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-airborne-snow-measuring-has-tradeoffs">Airborne snow measuring has tradeoffs</h2>



<p>Basin-wide surveys are undeniably powerful. Airborne campaigns can directly estimate a basin’s total snow volume, and satellites help paint the big picture over vast, remote areas. The catch is cost and cadence.</p>



<p>Airborne surveys are expensive and can’t fly everywhere all the time. Satellite products are improving quickly but still struggle with forests, clouds, and complex terrain, and they need ground truth to keep forecasts anchored in reality.</p>



<p>By contrast, a handful of well-placed ground sensors can run all season, in all weather, at a fraction of the price. </p>



<p>The new study shows those stations can deliver similar - and often better - forecast gains precisely because they target the parts of a basin that control when and how snowmelt becomes streamflow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowmelt-and-a-warming-west">Snowmelt and a warming West</h2>



<p>On average, about half of the water in Western U.S. streams comes from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alpine-spring-begins-earlier-speeding-up-plant-growth/">snowmelt</a>. Cities plan reservoir releases and farmers schedule irrigation based on spring forecasts issued months ahead of peak demand.</p>



<p>But warming winters are shrinking mountain snowpacks and making melt timing jumpier, which raises the stakes for every improvement in prediction.</p>



<p>With budgets tightening, the findings offer a practical roadmap: expand monitoring, yes - but do it surgically. In many basins, adding a few instruments at hotspot locations will deliver more value than trying to map the whole watershed every time snow falls.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-water-managers-can-do-now"><a></a>What water managers can do now</h2>



<p>One of the most useful outcomes of the study is a framework for identifying where new measurements will help the most. </p>



<p>Rather than guessing, agencies can now screen a basin to find untapped areas whose snow signals are especially predictive of downstream flow and focus new stations there.</p>



<p>The same framework highlights where basin-wide mapping will add value - for example, in large, highly variable basins where total snow volume swings widely from year to year.</p>



<p>In short, there isn’t a single “best” strategy for every watershed. But there is a smarter sequence: start by asking where a new measurement would most improve the forecast, then pick the tool - a ground station, an aircraft flight, or satellite data - that fits the need and the budget.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-adapting-as-snowlines-shift">Adapting as snowlines shift</h2>



<p>Hotspot monitoring isn’t a magic wand. Some basins still benefit from periodic aerial surveys to capture the full snow picture, especially after major <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-soil-moisture-can-predict-severe-storms/">storms</a> or in places with complex rain-snow transitions.</p>



<p>Satellites remain essential for regional situational awareness. As climate change pushes snowlines higher, the locations of the most informative hotspots may shift, requiring the network to adapt.</p>



<p>The encouraging news is that the ingredients for better forecasts already exist: decades of streamflow records, a century of snow-station data, rapidly improving remote sensing, and now a tested way to combine them so that each new measurement counts.</p>



<p>The study also shows that many forecasters are closer than they might think to an optimally balanced network - one that blends a few carefully placed new stations with occasional basin-wide snapshots to keep tabs on the big swings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-what-matters-most">Measuring what matters most</h2>



<p>Snowmelt will remain the West’s water engine, even as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/">climate change</a> makes it less predictable. This work suggests a practical, budget-savvy way to squeeze more certainty out of the same mountains: measure the snow where it matters most.</p>



<p>When every acre-foot counts, a handful of well-chosen hotspots can do more for tomorrow’s water plan than trying to see everything everywhere all at once.</p>

The study introduces a pale, slender <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-ant-species-discovered-in-ancient-amber/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ant</a> with its notable long, sharp mandibles and spindly legs. </p>



<p>The name Leptanilla Voldemort actively pays tribute to the infamous dark wizard from the Harry Potter series, reflecting the ant's eerie appearance and its emergence from the dark, underground world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-leptanilla-voldemort-ant">Finding Leptanilla Voldemort ant</h2>



<p>The researchers unearthed the species during an ecological survey that aimed to document the subterranean fauna of the arid Pilbara. They used an innovative collection method by lowering a net down a 25-meter drill hole. </p>



<p>The team skillfully retrieved the net as it scraped against the hole’s inner surface, a technique known as "subterranean scraping." Remarkably, they collected only two specimens, underscoring the rarity and elusive nature of this species.</p>



<p>Compared to its kin in the Leptanilla genus, L. voldemort exhibits extreme body slenderness and uniquely long antennae and legs. This suggests that it inhabits not only the soil but possibly also air-filled voids or cracks deeper within the rock layers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predatory-nature-of-the-new-leptanilla-ant">Predatory nature of the new Leptanilla ant</h2>



<p>"Leptanilla voldemort is almost surely a predator, a fearsome hunter in the dark. This is backed up by what we know from the few observations of specialized hunting behaviors in other Leptanilla ant species, where the tiny workers use their sharp jaws and powerful stings to immobilize soil-dwelling centipedes much larger than them, before carrying their larvae over to feed on the carcass," noted Dr. Wong.</p>



<p>Similarly, although researchers have not yet identified the exact prey of Leptanilla Voldemort ants, they collected various other subterranean invertebrates, including centipedes, beetles, and flies, from the same locality. These findings hint at a diverse underground ecosystem.</p>

<p>Leptanilla ants are part of an enigmatic group. Out of over 14,000 known ant species worldwide, only about 60 belong to this genus. <p>In every cell, a complex called the proteasome acts like a recycling center, breaking down unneeded proteins. However, recent discoveries by <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins Medicine</a> suggest these proteasomes are more than just cellular custodians - they're also crucial communicators in the nervous system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proteasomes-in-neurons">Proteasomes in neurons</h2>



<p>Study co-author Dr. Seth S. Margolis is an associate professor of biological chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.</p>

<p>To understand the potential role of proteasomes within the nerves near the skin, the scientists conducted a carefully designed experiment. Their approach centered on temporarily disabling proteasome function in mice. </p>



<p>The experts utilized a specialized drug called biotin-epoxomicin, known to specifically stop proteasomes from doing their usual "clean-up" work. Once the proteasomes were blocked, the researchers performed a series of well-established sensory tests on the mice.</p>



<p>The results were striking. Mice that received the proteasome-blocking drug showed a significant delay in their response to sensory stimuli. In fact, their reactions were on average 25 to 50 percent slower than what would be considered normal. </p>



<p>This compelling observation was not mere chance. It strongly suggested a deeper role for proteasomes. While crucial for cellular maintenance, proteasomes also critically influence how nerves near the skin process environmental information.</p>

The researchers discovered that proteasomes seemed to be around a specific group of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cleaning-the-brain-neurons-flush-out-waste-while-we-sleep/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neurons</a> connected to the sensation of itch. (Ever wondered why you have an uncontrollable urge to scratch sometimes?) These itch-related neurons are triggered by histamine, a chemical your immune system releases in response to allergens.</p>



<p>The scientists exposed itch neurons in a petri dish to a proteasome-blocking drug. Interestingly, this exposure changed the activity of neighboring neurons. These changes occurred even in neurons that did not detect itch.</p>



<p>"Blocking proteasomes seems to have an activity-modulatory effect across all the cells, despite being expressed in a subpopulation, suggesting that proteasomes facilitate a kind of cross talk between these cells," explained Dr. Margolis.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-in-the-crosshairs-of-dart-asteroid-debris">Mars in the crosshairs of DART asteroid debris</h2>



<p>According to a paper by researchers from Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (<a href="https://www.jhuapl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JHUAPL</a>) and the DART team, published in the journal <em><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-024-02200-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Astronomy</a></em>, the impact successfully altered Dimorphos' orbit by 32 minutes and significantly changed the asteroid's shape. </p>



<p>Unfortunately, the collision may have sent debris flying into space, potentially into the path of Mars.</p>



<p>The paper reveals that the <a href="https://youtu.be/xUzFCh75KLI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DART impact</a> resulted in a staggering 1.3–2.2 × 107 kg of material being ejected from the asteroid, equivalent to 0.3 to 0.5 percent of its entire mass. </p>



<p>This displacement caused an 8 percent change in Dimorphos' mass distribution, drastically altering its shape. </p>



<p>Remarkably, the ejecta consisted of 37 boulders, some measuring up to 22 feet across. As astronomer Andy Rivkin from the DART team stated, "We did not expect that many boulders that were that big to be blown off."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-dart-space-rocks-and-possible-mars-impact">Tracking DART space rocks and possible Mars impact</h2>



<p>While the study indicates that none of the ejected boulders pose a threat to Earth, with the closest passing at a distance of approximately 1.9 million miles in about 2,500 years, there is a possibility that some of these rocks may collide with Mars in the distant future. </p>



<p>The researchers noted that the minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) between the ejecta and Mars will be very small on four occasions, two around 6,000 years from now and another two around 15,000 years later.</p>



<p>In the unlikely event that these rocks do hit Mars, they may either burn up in the planet's thin atmosphere or collide with its surface, creating a sizable impact crater. </p>



<p>The researchers stated, "Given the rarefaction of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-martian-sky-often-has-an-eerie-green-glow-at-night-called-nightglow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian atmosphere</a>, we expect the boulders to arrive intact on the ground and excavate a small impact crater."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-monitoring-ejecta">Importance of monitoring ejecta </h2>



<p>Stefania Soldini, an associate professor in space engineering at the <a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Liverpool</a>, highlighted the significance of this study for future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psyche-asteroid-is-worth-10000-quadrillion-and-nasa-is-sending-a-space-probe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">asteroid</a> deflection missions. </p>



<p>She emphasized that any ejecta resulting from the impact of spacecraft sent to redirect asteroids must be closely monitored, as it could potentially pose a threat to Earth in the future.</p>



<p>Current efforts by <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, the <a href="https://www.esa.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Space Agency</a>, and <a href="https://global.jaxa.jp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Japan's space agency</a> to safeguard Earth from potential space-based dangers will also prove valuable for future human settlements on Mars. </p>



<p>Soldini pointed out that while Mars' atmosphere offers some protection from smaller objects, the moon lacks this defense.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origin-of-earth-s-meteorites">Origin of Earth's meteorites</h2>



<p>The researchers also noted that the results of this study provide further evidence that some meteorites found on Earth may have originated from collisions between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/near-earth-asteroid-may-be-a-fragment-of-the-moon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">near-Earth asteroids</a> measuring around 328 feet and projectiles of approximately 3 feet in size.</p>



<p>Despite the intriguing findings of the DART mission, it is important to note that none of the 33,000 near-Earth asteroids currently being tracked by NASA are on a collision course with our planet in the near future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-the-dart-mission-and-mars-involvement">More about the DART mission and Mars' involvement</h2>



<p>As discussed above, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, launched on November 23, 2021, aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of using a kinetic impact technique to deflect an asteroid's trajectory. </p>



<p>This innovative mission marked the first-ever attempt to alter the path of a celestial body, paving the way for future planetary defense strategies.</p>

<p>The mission's objective was to collide the DART spacecraft with Dimorphos, altering its orbit around Didymos and providing valuable data on the feasibility of using this method to protect Earth from potentially hazardous asteroids.</p>

<p>On September 26, 2022, at 7:14 p.m. EDT, the DART spacecraft successfully impacted Dimorphos at a speed of approximately 4 miles per second. </p>



<p>The collision occurred about 7 million miles from Earth, with the spacecraft transmitting images up until the moment of impact. This historic event marked the first time humans deliberately changed the motion of a celestial body in space.</p>

<p>Following the impact, astronomers worldwide used various telescopes to measure the change in Dimorphos' orbit around Didymos. </p>

<p>Researchers at <a href="https://www.kyushu-u.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kyushu University</a> have elucidated the formative processes of baby <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/hubble-captures-the-development-of-baby-stars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a>, offering a fresh perspective on the early stages of <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/barred-spiral-galaxy-ngc-1559-is-a-hotspot-for-star-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star formation</a>.</p>



<p>Using the ALMA radio telescope in Chile, the team recently observed intriguing phenomena around these nascent stars.</p>



<p>They playfully term these phenomena "sneezes," which involve the protostellar disks surrounding baby stars releasing dust, gas, and electromagnetic energy. The researchers detailed their groundbreaking findings in <em><a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/ad2f9a" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Astrophysical Journal</a></em>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-baby-stars-are-born">How baby stars are born</h2>



<p>Stars, including our own Sun, emerge from <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/hubble-is-unlocking-the-mysteries-of-the-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stellar nurseries</a>—massive conglomerations of gas and dust. This matter gradually condenses to form what we call a stellar core, or a baby star, enveloped by a protostellar disk. The disk plays a crucial role in the star formation process and is also a site of significant magnetic activity.</p>



<p>Kazuki Tokuda, an expert in Kyushu University's Faculty of Sciences and lead author of the study, explained the magnetic dynamics involved. </p>



<p>"These structures are perpetually penetrated by magnetic fields, carrying with them magnetic flux," said Tokuda. "However, retaining all this magnetic flux would result in magnetic fields many times stronger than those observed in any known protostar."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-sneezes-in-baby-star-formation">The role of "sneezes" in baby star formation</h2>



<p>The prevailing astrophysics theory suggests that the magnetic field weakens as the stellar core absorbs material. However, the team from Kyushu University has uncovered a different mechanism at play.</p>



<p>Focusing on MC 27, a stellar nursery about 450 light-years away, the team collected data that revealed unexpected "spike-like" structures emanating from the protostellar disk.</p>



<p>"These spike-like structures extended a few astronomical units from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/complex-organic-molecules-discovered-surrounding-newborn-star-iras-23385/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">protostellar disk</a>. Initially puzzling, we soon realized these were spikes of expelled magnetic flux, dust, and gas," said Tokuda. </p>



<p>The expulsion is a result of interchange instability, where variations in the magnetic field interact with the differing densities in the protostellar disk, forcibly ejecting magnetic flux outward. The researchers compared this dynamic expulsion to a sneeze, where particles are rapidly expelled.</p>



<p>Further observations identified similar spikes thousands of astronomical units away, suggesting these "sneezes" are a recurring event during baby star formation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-astronomy">Broader implications for astronomy</h2>



<p>The findings clarify the process of magnetic flux expulsion. Additionally, they contribute to the broader understanding of how baby stars and planets form.</p>



<p>"Similar spike-like structures have been observed in other young stars, becoming a more common discovery in astronomy," noted Tokuda. </p>



<p>By studying these "sneezes," scientists hope to further elucidate the conditions under which stars and planets come into existence. </p>

<p>Baby stars, or protostars, are nascent stars in the initial phases of stellar evolution. They represent a critical stage in the life cycle of stars, from clouds of gas and dust to fully formed stars. Here's a detailed look at the formation and characteristics of protostars:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Formation in molecular clouds</h3>



<p>Protostars begin their life in molecular clouds, which are cold, dense regions of space filled with gas and dust. These clouds contain the basic building blocks for star formation. Under the influence of gravity, regions within these clouds begin to collapse when the internal pressure can no longer support the cloud against gravitational pull.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Collapse and increase in density</h3>



<p>As the cloud collapses, it increases in density and temperature. The material at the center of the cloud forms a dense core that heats up, creating an ideal environment for a star to form. This phase is often hidden from view, as the surrounding dust and gas obscure the forming star.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Accretion of material</h3>



<p>Around the dense core, a protostellar disk forms, consisting of gas and dust that continues to feed the growing protostar through a process called accretion. This disk is crucial as it channels material towards the core, allowing the protostar to gain mass and energy.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Thermal and radiative processes in baby stars</h3>



<p>As the core's temperature and pressure increase, nuclear fusion becomes imminent. However, in the protostar phase, the energy generated is primarily from the gravitational contraction rather than nuclear fusion (which defines a true star). The protostar radiates away energy, primarily as infrared light due to the thick material surrounding it.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Outflows and jets</h3>



<p>Baby stars often exhibit powerful jets and outflows - streams of gas ejected from the poles of the accretion disk. These phenomena are thought to be driven by magnetic fields that help to remove angular momentum from the accreting material, allowing more material to fall onto the star.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Evolution into T-Tauri stars</h3>



<p>As the protostar continues to evolve, it enters the T-Tauri phase - a pre-main sequence stage where it becomes visible in optical wavelengths and where strong winds begin to clear away surrounding material. This phase marks the end of the most obscured part of a star's formation.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Onset of nuclear fusion</h3>



<p>Eventually, the temperature and pressure at the core of the protostar become high enough to initiate hydrogen fusion, marking the birth of a new star. The star then enters the main sequence phase, where it will spend most of its life.</p>

<p>As cannabis legalization becomes more prevalent, research into its various components and their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-cannabis-use-disorder-risk-varies-among-young-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">effects on the human body</a>, including anxiety, has gained momentum. </p>



<p>A recent study led by a research team from Johns Hopkins Medicine has shed light on the potential of a naturally occurring chemical in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recreational-cannabis-use-protects-against-cognitive-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a> called d-limonene.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-d-limonene-cannabis-and-anxiety">D-Limonene, cannabis, and anxiety</h2>



<p>The study was conducted by Tory Spindle, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/som" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Medicine</a>. </p>



<p>He and his team aimed to investigate the anxiety-reducing effects of d-limonene in humans when combined with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoking-cannabis-significantly-increases-the-risk-of-heart-attack/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a>.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/profiles/details/ryan-vandrey" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ryan Vandrey</a>, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine was the senior author of the study. </p>



<p>He explained, "People use cannabis to help reduce anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, but since THC levels vary widely, if a person overshoots their tolerance of THC, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/half-of-americans-have-tried-cannabis-and-nearly-a-fifth-use-it-regularly/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cannabis</a> can induce anxiety rather than relieve it." </p>



<p>Vandrey continued," Our study demonstrates that d-limonene can modulate the effects of THC in a meaningful way and make THC more tolerable to people using it for both therapeutic and non-therapeutic purposes."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rise-of-thc-levels-in-cannabis">Rise of THC levels in cannabis</h2>



<p>In recent years, selective breeding of cannabis plants has resulted in strains containing upwards of 20% to 30% THC, compared to an average of 12% a decade ago. </p>



<p>This increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-potency-linked-to-dramatic-rise-in-psychiatric-disorders/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">THC levels</a> can make it challenging for users to consistently consume the same amount of THC on each occasion.</p>



<p>THC interacts with receptors in the brain to produce feelings of relaxation and euphoria. However, when a user is exposed to higher-than-usual doses of THC, the drug can also trigger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-use-linked-to-psychosis-among-adolescents/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anxiety, fear, and panic</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-promising-role-of-d-limonene">Promising role of D-limonene</h2>



<p>D-limonene, one of the most abundant terpenes or essential oils in the cannabis plant, has shown promise in rodent studies in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/runners-high-cannabis-makes-exercise-more-enjoyable-and-boosts-motivation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reducing anxiety</a> behaviors. Terpenes are responsible for the taste, aroma, and color of plants.</p>



<p>In the study, 20 healthy adults participated in up to 10 outpatient sessions, during which they inhaled vaporized d-limonene alone, vaporized THC alone, vaporized THC and d-limonene together, or vaporized distilled water (as a placebo). </p>



<p>The study was double-blinded, ensuring that neither the researchers nor the participants knew who was receiving which mixture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-d-limonene-from-cannabis-impacts-anxiety">How D-limonene from cannabis impacts anxiety</h2>



<p>The research team concluded that combining d-limonene with THC significantly reduced subjective indicators/reports of THC-induced anxiety in participants. These reductions were greater as the dose of d-limonene was increased. </p>



<p>Additionally, they observed no interference with THC's subjective, cognitive, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/after-centuries-of-speculation-heres-what-really-causes-the-munchies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">physiological effects</a> when co-administered with d-limonene, as well as no effects from d-limonene alone that differed from the placebo test.</p>



<p>Dr. Spindle, the lead author of the study, states, "This study is a first step in uncovering how we can mitigate risks of THC when used in medicine, and also is targeted at making cannabis safer for the general, non-therapeutic consumer."</p>



<p>The researchers plan to continue experimenting with other terpenes alone and in combination with THC to see how they interact with each other, as well as replicate the d-limonene study in larger and more diverse clinical populations. They also plan to test alternative methods of administration, such as oral ingestion.</p>

So, could artificial intelligence (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-can-decipher-every-possible-facial-expression-outperforming-therapists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a>) do it? A new study conducted at the <a href="https://www.marshall.usc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">USC Marshall School of Business</a> says yes – with some intriguing caveats.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-a-surprisingly-good-listener">AI, a surprisingly good listener</h2>



<p>Researchers found that people who received messages generated by AI actually felt more heard than those receiving messages written by a human! </p>



<p>The AI also excelled at detecting the person's emotions. This might seem counterintuitive, but there are a few key reasons that might explain this surprising result:</p>



<p>AI systems are specifically designed to analyze language and identify emotional cues. They don't get distracted by their own thoughts, feelings, or the myriad of other things going on in their day-to-day lives the way humans can. This allows them to dedicate more processing power to understanding the emotional message being conveyed.</p>



<p>AI systems (ideally) operate from a neutral starting point, without the human tendency for preconceived notions or unconscious biases. Approaching each message from a fresh perspective helps in recognizing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psifi-wearable-ai-device-interprets-emotions-people-nearby/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotions</a> as they are expressed.</p>



<p>AI models are trained on massive datasets of text and human emotional exchanges. This gives them an extensive library of patterns and language cues to draw from, allowing them to detect subtle nuances in emotional communication that a layperson might miss.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-offers-the-right-kind-of-emotional-support">AI offers the right kind of emotional support</h2>



<p>It might come down to a surprising advantage AI has over humans. Computers are programmed to analyze and categorize, free of all the distractions that plague our human brains.</p>



<p>"In the context of an increasing loneliness epidemic, a large part of our motivation was to see whether AI can actually help people feel heard," explained study's lead author, Yidan Yin.</p>



<p>The study indicates that the AI-generated messages were better at focusing on acknowledging and validating the recipient's emotional state. This created a sense of being heard and seen, boosting hope and lessening distress.</p>



<p>Moreover, AI may be better at recognizing when simple emotional support is what's required, rather than jumping in with solutions. This ability to discern the right type of response likely contributed to its positive impact.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-sticks-to-validation">AI sticks to validation</h2>



<p>AI's lack of personal experience and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-can-now-decipher-the-emotional-states-of-chickens/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotional</a> biases allows it to stick to pure emotional reflection without interjecting its own opinions or judgment. This non-judgmental approach creates a safe space for the person to feel fully understood.</p>



<p>Humans often try to "fix" someone's problems with practical advice when a person is primarily seeking emotional support. AI doesn't have this impulse, which can help the person feel truly heard and free to process their emotions without the pressure of finding a solution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-problem-with-emotional-support-of-ai">The problem with emotional support of AI</h2>



<p>But, and this is a big "but," here's where things get strange. When participants found out their empathetic messages came from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-robots-read-your-mind-this-one-can-anticipate-your-smile/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a>, they actually felt less heard. This phenomenon is similar to the "uncanny valley" effect in robotics, where humans get uncomfortable when something is <em>almost</em> human, but not quite.</p>



<p>"What we found was that both the actual source of the message and the presumed source of the message played a role," says co-author Cheryl Wakslak. "People felt more heard when they received an AI than a human message, but when they believed a message came from AI this made them feel less heard."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-humans-vs-ai-it-s-not-an-either-or">Humans vs. AI: It's not an "either-or"</h2>



<p>This research doesn't mean AI is going to replace our best friends as the best shoulder to cry on. Rather, it points to a fascinating collaboration potential. </p>



<p>Humans could learn a lot from how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/should-robots-be-programmed-to-have-human-consciousness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI</a> analyzes emotions and tailors its language for validation. "Humans may potentially learn from AI because a lot of times when our significant others are complaining about something, we want to provide that validation, but we don't know how to effectively do so," notes Yin.</p>



<p>Moreover, AI solutions could provide accessible and affordable emotional support, particularly for those who lack other outlets or social resources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-feeling-heard-via-ai-s-emotional-support">Feeling heard via AI's emotional support</h2>



<p>This research demonstrates that AI has the potential to understand our emotions and offer validating responses in ways that can be incredibly beneficial. </p>



<p>This opens up possibilities for accessible mental health support, tools for better communication, and perhaps even deeper self-understanding.</p>



<p>The "AI Uncanny Valley" effect, where people are unsettled by something that's almost human but not quite, is a significant obstacle. </p>



<p>The knowledge that AI generated their supportive messages made participants feel less understood. This suggests a psychological barrier we'll need to overcome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-becoming-more-comfortable-with-ai">Becoming more comfortable with AI</h2>



<p>It makes you wonder, with the inevitable advance of AI, will our attitudes soften? Will the "AI Uncanny Valley" effect fade as we get used to computers that truly understand how we feel?</p>



<p>These are pivotal questions for the future of human-AI interaction. It's possible that with exposure and positive experiences, our discomfort with AI in emotional contexts will lessen. </p>



<p>We might begin to view it less as a replacement for human connection and more as a unique tool with its own set of strengths. </p>



<p>However, it's also possible that the unease caused by the "uncanny valley" effect will persist, posing a fundamental challenge to widespread adoption of AI in roles that require deep emotional understanding.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance">Study significance</h2>



<p>As co-author Nan Jia puts it, "we identified that while AI demonstrates enhanced potential compared to non-trained human responders to provide emotional support, the devaluation of AI responses poses a key challenge for effectively deploying AI's capabilities."</p>



<p>The idea of an AI therapist might still be a ways off, but this study proves something important: AI has the potential to understand and respond to our emotions in ways we're still figuring out. It's a tool, and a powerful one. Whether we end up using it to have deeper connections with computers or with each other...that remains to be seen.</p>

<p>The electrical signals from the brain are incredibly faint by the time they reach the scalp. It takes very sensitive equipment and smart algorithms to pick up the relevant signals within all the background "noise".</p>

<p>April showers, traditionally light and frequent, are increasingly turning into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thunderstorms-are-becoming-more-intense-due-to-climate-change/">heavy downpours</a>. This shift is not limited to just one month; it's a year-round global trend that is leading to more intense but less frequent rainfalls. </p>



<p>A comprehensive study led by the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a> is shedding light on how changing rainfall patterns are affecting plant life across the globe.</p>

<p>"Typically, more rainfall over a year will make plants happier and allow the ecosystem to support more vegetation," Feldman explained. "But changes in how rain is delivered - shifting from frequent light showers to fewer, heavier events - can adjust a plant's photosynthesis and growth by 10% to 30%, even if the total amount of water they receive remains constant."</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>What we call "tickling" is two completely different phenomena, according to the latest research. Light tickling – that feathery sensation that makes you want to scratch – is essentially your body's sophisticated bug detection system. <p>Deep tickling – the kind that makes you laugh uncontrollably – involves complex brain circuits and is fundamentally social. You literally cannot tickle yourself with this type of stimulation.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.</p>



<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
