<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>Climate change is transforming the very fabric of our ecosystems, and as it progresses, its effects on rainfall patterns have become more pronounced. </p>



<p>April showers, traditionally light and frequent, are increasingly turning into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thunderstorms-are-becoming-more-intense-due-to-climate-change/">heavy downpours</a>. This shift is not limited to just one month; it's a year-round global trend that is leading to more intense but less frequent rainfalls. </p>



<p>A comprehensive study led by the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a> is shedding light on how changing rainfall patterns are affecting plant life across the globe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concentrated-rainfall-and-its-ecological-effects">Concentrated rainfall and its ecological effects</h2>



<p>The study reveals a significant trend. In most regions, over half of the annual rainfall now falls on just 12 days each year. Predictions indicate that future rainfall events will become even more concentrated. This new pattern of longer dry periods punctuated by heavy rains seems to offer mixed blessings. </p>



<p>According to Andrew Feldman, a researcher at the <a href="https://webhost.essic.umd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center</a> and the first author of the paper, plants in arid regions like the American West may benefit from these intense downpours. However, plants in naturally wetter areas could suffer under the same conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diverse-plant-responses-to-new-rainfall-regimes">Diverse plant responses to new rainfall regimes</h2>



<p>The response of plants to these changing conditions varies dramatically. Plants in dry ecosystems generally respond better to large bursts of rainfall than those in wetter environments. This sensitivity can shift dominant vegetation types, potentially altering the balance of an ecosystem.</p>



<p>"Typically, more rainfall over a year will make plants happier and allow the ecosystem to support more vegetation," Feldman explained. "But changes in how rain is delivered - shifting from frequent light showers to fewer, heavier events - can adjust a plant's photosynthesis and growth by 10% to 30%, even if the total amount of water they receive remains constant."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-studies-on-plant-responses">Global studies on plant responses</h2>



<p>Research also shows that plants in moderately wet regions, such as the Midwestern United States, are highly susceptible to these shifts. Their functional changes could see as much as a 25% alteration within a year due to changing rainfall patterns.</p>



<p>Global studies also reflect diverse reactions. While 42% of cases showed plants struggling under new rainfall regimes, 35% indicated improvement. Meanwhile, 23% saw no significant change.</p>

<p>This nuanced picture underscores the complexity of plant responses to rainfall variability. This variability is a critical factor influencing everything from crop yields to the absorption of carbon emitted by human activities.</p>



<p>"Plants are responsible for the largest flux of carbon on global land," Feldman noted, emphasizing the broader implications of these findings. "Understanding how they respond to daily rainfall variability is crucial, as it affects agricultural productivity and our planet's ability to sequester carbon."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-road-ahead-future-research-directions">The road ahead: Future research directions</h2>



<p>The research team, including experts from the <a href="https://twin-cities.umn.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Minnesota</a>, <a href="https://www.montana.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Montana State University</a>, <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>, <a href="https://www.colostate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a>, the <a href="https://www.usda.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Agriculture</a>, and NASA's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Spaceflight Center</a>, is expanding their studies. </p>



<p>The experts are preparing a global analysis to examine how plants respond to intense, sporadic rainfall through satellite measurements.</p>



<p>In addition, Feldman and his colleagues aim to identify the optimal rainfall frequencies that maximize photosynthesis and growth in plants. </p>



<p>"To accurately predict the impact of increasingly extreme rainfall on plant life, we must invest in understanding the soil and plant processes that are influenced by individual rainstorms and the subsequent dry periods," said Feldman.</p>



<p>As challenges evolve, the urgency for detailed, continuous research highlights the complex interplay between climate change and the natural world.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rising temperatures and intense rainfall</h2>



<p>The link between rising temperatures and intense rainfall is primarily due to the increased capacity of warmer air to hold moisture. Here’s how it works:</p>

<p>As temperatures rise due to global warming, the amount of evaporation from the Earth's surface also increases. Warmer air can hold more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sci-fi-inspired-scenarios-illustrate-our-impact-on-earths-water-cycle/">water vapor</a> than cooler air. For every 1°C rise in temperature, the air's capacity to hold water vapor increases by about 7 percent.</p>

As this air rises, it cools and the water vapor condenses into cloud droplets, eventually leading to precipitation. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Increased rainfall intensity</h3>



<p>With more moisture in the atmosphere, when rain does occur, it can be more intense. This is because as the water vapor condenses into liquid or ice, it releases latent heat, which in turn fuels the storm, making it stronger and potentially more capable of producing heavy bursts of rain.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Climate patterns and changes</h3>



<p>Climate change also alters various climate patterns and systems like jet streams and ocean currents, which can further affect weather systems, potentially leading to more frequent and intense storms.</p>

<p>This finding implies that physical activity triggers mechanisms within muscle tissue that help reduce the amount of these specific lipids.</p>



<p>While we know BMPs accumulate with age, the long-term consequences of this buildup remain under investigation. </p>



<p>If exercise can reduce BMPs, it opens up a whole new avenue of research into how staying active could potentially mitigate age-related changes within our tissues and even slow down some aspects of the aging process.</p>



<p>"Everyone says that 'it's just part of getting older,' but this doesn't actually have to be true. By understanding more about the aging process, we can also look into new ways of intervening," said study lead author Georges Janssens.</p>

<p>The ocean depths teem with a mysterious world unknown to most of us land-dwellers. But this delicate ecosystem is under threat. </p>



<p>Warmer waters caused by climate change hold less oxygen. It's a crisis for marine life, which needs oxygen to survive – just like us. But where does the deep sea even get its oxygen, and why is it running out?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-sea-oxygen-problem">Deep sea oxygen problem</h2>



<p>"There is growing concern for the health of our coastal oceans as the climate warms because warmer water holds less oxygen," explains Professor Tom Rippeth of <a href="https://www.bangor.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bangor University</a>. </p>



<p>"Living creatures in the ocean are reliant on oxygen to survive in the same way as animals on land are. Oxygen is also used up as rotting matter decomposes in the depths of the ocean. This creates a summer oxygen deficit in the deep seas around the UK. Unfortunately, as our climate warms, this deficit is forecast to grow."</p>



<p>In the summer months, the sun's energy warms the surface layers of the ocean. Warmer water is naturally less dense than colder water. This difference in density creates a barrier that hinders mixing between the two layers.</p>



<p>This process where water masses with different properties form layers is called stratification. It's a bit like oil and water separating in a glass – they don't readily mix due to density differences.</p>



<p>The warmer, less dense top layer of the ocean interacts with the atmosphere, absorbing oxygen for use by marine life. However, this oxygen-rich water stays near the surface due to stratification - the natural separation of the ocean's water into horizontal layers by density. </p>



<p>The deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-news-ocean-oxygen-loss-may-ultimately-reverse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean</a> layer, cut off from the surface and the atmosphere, can't replenish its oxygen. Additionally, biological processes like the decomposition of organic matter further consume the existing oxygen within this deep layer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-summer-storms-and-ocean-mixing">Summer storms and ocean mixing</h2>



<p>You might not think of storms as helpful, but scientists from Bangor University, the <a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Liverpool</a>, and the National Oceanography Center have found they play an unexpected role.</p>



<p>At first glance, storms seem destructive. However, the powerful winds and waves associated with summer storms significantly churn the ocean's surface. This turbulence disrupts stratification.</p>



<p>The energy of the storm doesn't just impact the surface. It penetrates deeper, forcing the mixing of the oxygen-rich surface water with the oxygen-depleted layers below. This mixing helps replenish the oxygen in the deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-oxygen-levels-global/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean</a>, combating the natural oxygen decline that occurs during summer.</p>



<p>Just how effective is this? The research shows that these storms can slow the worsening of deep-sea oxygen shortages by a whopping 50 percent.</p>

<p>But wait, turbines mixing the ocean? Here's the idea: the very structures of floating wind farms could act as giant mixers, further circulating oxygenated water. However, Professor Rippeth cautions that we need to carefully consider how these farms are designed and placed to get the balance right.</p>

<p>Spinal cord research at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science (<a href="https://cbs.riken.jp/jp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CBS</a>) in Japan, led by Aya Takeoka, has unveiled revolutionary insights into its capabilities, demonstrating its potential for independent motor learning and memory. </p>



<p>The experts have identified two key groups of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zombie-neurons-shed-new-light-on-learning/">neurons</a> within the spinal cord: one essential for acquiring new motor skills, and another for retrieving these learned skills.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spinal-capabilities">Spinal capabilities</h2>



<p>Traditionally, it was believed that the spinal cord's role in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spinal-cord-control-motor-functions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">motor control</a> was merely reactionary, dependent on the brain's commands. However, evidence from nature, such as headless insects that can still adapt their leg movements, hinted at a more autonomous function. </p>



<p>Until now, the mechanisms behind such phenomena remained a mystery. "Gaining insights into the underlying mechanism is essential if we want to understand the foundations of movement automaticity in healthy people and use this knowledge to improve recovery after spinal cord injury," explained Takeoka.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mice-learn-leg-movements-via-spinal-cord">Mice learn leg movements via spinal cord</h2>



<p>To delve deeper into this autonomous capability, Takeoka's team devised an innovative experiment using mice. They created conditions where a mouse's spinal cord could learn and recall leg movements without brain input. </p>



<p>In their setup, mice were subjected to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/treating-depression-with-electrical-stimulation-of-the-spinal-cord/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electrical stimulation</a> based on the position of their hindlegs.  Notably, if a mouse's leg drooped, it triggered a stimulation, simulating an adverse event that the animal would naturally want to avoid.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lasting-spinal-learning">Lasting spinal learning</h2>



<p>The results were striking. After only ten minutes of this setup, the experimental mice adjusted their leg positions to avoid stimulation. This behavior demonstrates a clear example of motor learning occurring directly at the spinal level. </p>



<p>Moreover, this learning was not fleeting. A day later, the same mice retained their adjusted leg positions, even when roles were reversed with control mice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-memory-and-learning">Mapping memory and learning</h2>



<p>Further exploration into the neural circuitry responsible for these capabilities used transgenic mice with specific spinal neuron populations disabled. </p>



<p>Subsequently, the team made an important discovery: disabling neurons at the top of the spinal cord, particularly those expressing the gene Ptf1a, hindered the mice's ability to adapt their movements. As a result, the mice could not effectively avoid electrical shocks.</p>



<p>Conversely, neurons in the lower, ventral part of the spinal cord, which express the En1 gene, proved crucial for this learning process. </p>



<p>Silencing these neurons a day after the initial adaptation had a significant effect. It rendered the spinal cord unable to recall the learned avoidance, effectively erasing the 'memory'.</p>



<p>In a significant finding, stimulating these En1-expressing neurons during the recall phase had a dramatic effect. The stimulation not only brought back the learned behavior but also enhanced the response speed by 80 percent. This indicates an amplified recall ability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-paradigm-shift-in-motor-learning">A paradigm shift in motor learning</h2>



<p>These groundbreaking findings challenge the traditional view that motor learning and memory are exclusively brain-centric. </p>



<p>"Not only do these results challenge the prevailing notion that motor learning and memory are solely confined to brain circuits, but we showed that we could manipulate spinal cord motor recall, which has implications for therapies designed to improve recovery after spinal cord damage," said Takeoka.</p>



<p>The study reshapes our understanding of the spinal cord's role in motor function. Additionally, it opens new avenues for rehabilitation strategies following spinal injuries, offering hope for enhanced recovery and autonomy in affected individuals.</p>

<p>Tailored rehabilitation programs that engage spinal motor learning can help patients regain motor functions. These might involve repetitive, task-specific exercises that encourage the spinal cord to "relearn" movements even if some brain-to-spinal cord pathways are damaged.</p>

<p>Treatments could focus on enhancing neural plasticity within the spinal cord. This might include pharmacological approaches that promote the growth and strengthening of neural connections or neurotrophic factors that support neuron health and growth. </p>

<p>In an exciting announcement from the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration, researchers have detected a remarkable gravitational-wave signal that could hold the key to solving a cosmic mystery. </p>



<p>This discovery, made by a team of over 1,600 scientists from around the world, including members of the University of Portsmouth's Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation (<a href="https://www.port.ac.uk/research/research-groups-and-centres/institute-of-cosmology-and-gravitation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ICG</a>), has the potential to shed light on the nature of compact objects and the mass gap between neutron stars and black holes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intriguing-gravitational-wave-signal-gw230529">Intriguing gravitational-wave signal: GW230529</h2>



<p>The signal, named GW230529, was observed by the LIGO Livingston detector in Louisiana, U.S., in May 2023, shortly after the start of the fourth <a href="https://www.ligo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LIGO</a>-<a href="https://www.virgo-gw.eu/about/scientific-collaboration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virgo</a>-<a href="https://gwcenter.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/organization" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">KAGRA</a> observing run. </p>



<p>The gravitational waves originated from the collision of what is most likely a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neutron-stars-may-hold-the-key-to-understanding-dark-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">neutron star</a> with a compact object that is 2.5 to 4.5 times the mass of our sun. </p>



<p>The mass of the heavier object is particularly intriguing as it falls within a possible mass gap between the heaviest known neutron stars and the lightest black holes.</p>



<p>Dr. Jess McIver, Assistant Professor at the <a href="https://www.ubc.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of British Columbia</a> and Deputy Spokesperson of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, explains. </p>



<p>"This detection, the first of our exciting results from the fourth LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run, reveals that there may be a higher rate of similar collisions between neutron stars and low mass black holes than we previously thought," McIver said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-in-assessing-single-detector-events">Challenges in assessing single-detector events</h2>



<p>As GW230529 was only detected by one gravitational-wave detector, assessing its authenticity becomes more challenging. </p>



<p>Dr. Gareth Cabourn Davies, a Research Software Engineer in the ICG, developed the tools used to search for events in a single detector. </p>



<p>"Corroborating events by seeing them in multiple detectors is one of our most powerful tools in separating signals from noise. By using appropriate models of the background noise, we can judge an event even when we don't have another detector to back up what we have seen," Davies explained.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mass-gap-mystery">Mass gap mystery</h2>



<p>Prior to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/echo-of-gravitational-waves-heard-for-the-first-time-finally-confirming-their-existence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">detection</a> of gravitational waves in 2015, the masses of stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars were primarily determined using X-ray and radio observations, respectively. </p>



<p>These measurements fell into two distinct ranges with a gap between them, known as the mass gap, which spans from about two to five times the mass of our sun. In recent years, a small number of measurements have encroached on this mass gap, sparking debates among astrophysicists.</p>



<p>Analysis of GW230529 reveals that it originated from the merger of two compact objects, with the lighter object having a mass between 1.2 to 2.0 times that of our sun and the heavier object being slightly more than twice as massive. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-hole-within-the-mass-gap">Black hole within the mass gap?</h2>



<p>While the gravitational-wave signal alone cannot determine with certainty whether these objects are neutron stars or black holes, it is likely that the lighter object is a neutron star and the heavier object a black hole within the mass gap.</p>



<p>Dr. Sylvia Biscoveanu from <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> emphasizes the significance of this discovery. </p>



<p>"While previous evidence for mass-gap objects has been reported both in gravitational and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-detect-highest-energy-gamma-rays-ever-from-a-pulsar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">electromagnetic waves</a>, this system is especially exciting because it's the first gravitational-wave detection of a mass-gap object paired with a neutron star," Biscoveanu said. </p>



<p>"The observation of this system has important implications for both theories of binary evolution and electromagnetic counterparts to compact-object mergers," she concluded.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-gravitational-wave-astronomy">Future of gravitational-wave astronomy</h2>



<p>The fourth observing run, planned to last for 20 months with a couple of months break for maintenance and improvements, has already identified a total of 81 significant signal candidates as of January 16, 2024. GW230529 is the first of these to be published after detailed investigation.</p>



<p>The observing run will resume on April 10, 2024, with the LIGO Hanford, LIGO Livingston, and Virgo detectors operating together until February 2025. </p>



<p>As the collaboration continues to analyze the data from the first half of the run and investigate the remaining 80 significant signal candidates, the total number of observed gravitational-wave signals is expected to exceed 200 by the end of the fourth observing run.</p>

<p>A team of researchers led by Hai-Bo Yu has shed new light on the enigmatic nature of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-does-not-exist-universe-27-billion-years-old-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark matter</a> through the lens of an ancient galaxy.</p>



<p>The study focuses on <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-023-02103-9">JWST-</a><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-023-02103-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ER1g</a>, a massive ancient galaxy discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) last September, which formed when the universe was just a quarter of its current age.</p>



<p>Surprisingly, JWST-ER1g is associated with an Einstein ring, a phenomenon predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity. The galaxy acts as a lens, bending light from a distant source, which then appears as a ring. </p>



<p>This phenomenon, known as strong <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-finds-a-second-lensed-supernova-in-a-distant-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational lensing</a>, allows researchers to calculate the total mass enclosed within the ring, which consists of both stellar and dark matter components.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unveiling-the-dark-matter-halo">Unveiling the dark matter halo</h2>



<p>"If we subtract the stellar mass from the total mass, we get the dark matter mass within the ring," explained Professor Yu, a professor of physics and astronomy at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a>. </p>



<p>"But the value for the dark matter mass seems higher than expected. This is puzzling. In our paper, we offer an explanation," Yu concluded.</p>



<p>The team proposes that the high density of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-amount-of-dark-matter-may-be-missing-from-the-milky-way/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark matter</a> in JWST-ER1g may be due to the compression of the dark matter halo surrounding the galaxy. </p>



<p>As ordinary matter, such as pristine gas and stars, collapses and condenses into the dark matter halo, it may compress the halo, leading to a higher density of dark matter.</p>



<p>Demao Kong, a second-year graduate student at UCR who led the analysis, stated, "Our numerical studies show that this mechanism can explain the high dark matter density of JWST-ER1g -- more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-may-reveal-the-origin-of-magnetic-fields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark matter</a> mass in the same volume, resulting in higher density."</p>

<p>Daneng Yang, a postdoctoral researcher at UCR and co-author on the paper, emphasized the significance of this strong lensing object.</p>



<p>"This strong lensing object is unique because it has a perfect Einstein ring, from which we can obtain valuable information about the total mass within the ring, a critical step for testing dark matter properties," Yang explained.</p>

<p>Subsequently, a team of paleontologists from the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a> led the research, achieving detailed 3D reconstructions of the mouthparts of vertebrates from the early Devonian epoch -- about 400 million years ago, a period often referred to as the Age of Fishes.</p>

<p>These fish possess cartilaginous skeletons, with most ostracoderms featuring heavy bony armor. Conversely, lampreys and hagfish display a simplified body structure, lacking paired fins and using a notochord as their primary axial support.</p>



<p>Moreover, jawless <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-evolution-takes-place-in-decades-not-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fish</a> are crucial for understanding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-and-when-did-jaws-evolve/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vertebrate</a> evolution. <p>Dr. Ivan Sansom, the project lead, highlights the significance of non-destructive CT scanning in revealing these ancient life forms. He states, "The application of CT scanning techniques to the study of fossil fish is revealing so much new information about these ancient vertebrates and giving us the opportunity to study precious and unique specimens without destructive investigation.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diets-of-jawless-fish">Diets of jawless fish</h2>



<p>Dr. Richard Dearden, lead author of the study, elaborated on their findings. He explained, “These methods have allowed us to assemble all the small bones of this animal’s mouth together, and understand how it fed from this integrated system rather than by examining isolated bones. </p>



<p>Contrary to a steady trend towards ‘active food acquisition’ -- scavenging or hunting -- we observe a real diversity and range of feeding behaviors among our earliest vertebrate relatives.”</p>



<p>The 3D images revealed the structure of finger-like bones projecting from the fish's lower 'lip.' These projections helped shape the mouth to capture food from the water.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the reconstructions indicate that the bony plates around the mouth allowed limited movement, suggesting these animals were not capable of biting.</p>



<p>Instead, they likely used these plates to strain food from the water, similar to how modern flamingos or oysters feed.</p>

<p>"The more accurate and detailed the mapping, the better chance we have to save <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/north-atlantic-right-whales-are-getting-shorter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dwindling numbers </a>of right whales from preventable injury and fatality," explained Patrick Halpin, director of Duke University's Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab.</p>



<p>By crunching massive amounts of data using an advanced statistical model, researchers were able to create detailed maps. </p>



<p>Essentially, these maps show hot spots of whale activity – areas with a higher density of whales at different times. It's like having a real-time guidebook for helping ships and fishing vessels avoid these precious creatures.</p>



<p>"With nearly three times more aerial survey data than we had before, and confirming evidence from the hydrophones, we were able to show how strongly the population has shifted its distribution," said Jason Roberts, Duke research associate and lead author of the study.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. The<a href="https://www.nih.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> National Institutes of Health</a> and the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Defense</a> funded the study, which appeared in the Journal of the <a href="https://www.acs.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Chemical Society</a>.<br>This research offers renewed hope against cancer, and it can potentially open a door to more effective cancer therapies for most cancer patients worldwide.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. <p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?</p>



<p>One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.</p>
