Retirement is not a one size fits all mental health booster. Some people feel lighter, others feel stuck, and a few feel worse after the early glow fades.



A new analysis maps who benefits and who needs help, and it points to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-with-a-higher-iq-make-smarter-life-decisions/">income</a>, job demands, and timing as the levers that matter most.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mental-health-and-retirement">Mental health and retirement</h2>



The study was led by Xuefei Li at the <a href="https://edwebprofiles.ed.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Edinburgh</a>’s School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.



The team analyzed 1,538 adults across 17 annual survey waves from the Netherlands to track mental health five and a half years before and after retirement.



The Dutch panel is a probability sample of households, which improves confidence that the results represent typical retirees rather than only volunteers.



The researchers separated the retirement <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eggs-and-cholesterol-a-new-twist-in-an-old-debate/">transition</a> into phases to see who improves and who dips, instead of treating retirement as a single before and after event.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-mental-health">Measuring mental health</h2>



Mental health was measured with an instrument known as the MHI 5, a short five question screen that captures psychological well being, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms.



The team used a piecewise growth curve <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.3758/s13428-020-01420-5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">model</a>, a method that looks for different slopes across segments of time, to capture short term changes at retirement and longer term patterns afterward.



This approach makes it possible to tell whether a quick lift around the retirement year holds, levels off, or reverses. It also shows whether different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dementia-is-a-growing-global-health-crisis-with-a-staggering-cost/">income</a> groups follow different shapes, not just different average levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-income-and-well-being">Income and well-being </h2>



Low-income retirees reported the lowest mental health during retirement, even though they improved right after leaving work.



The pattern curved downward about two and a half years in, suggesting a short honeymoon followed by new pressures that show up later.



Middle-income retirees improved more before retirement and then kept rising, but those who had physically demanding jobs started the transition with lower mental health and stayed lower across the process.



High-income retirees showed little change before or after, yet many experienced a clear jump in the retirement year, and those who retired later improved more slowly in that year.



“Understanding these phases sheds light on the adjustment processes that people undergo when faced with the internal and external challenges,” said Li.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-job-strain-in-retirement">Job strain in retirement</h2>



Among people with average incomes, holding a more physically demanding job was linked to lower mental health across the retirement period.



Related research has found that leaving a physically heavy job is associated with better self rated health compared with staying on, which helps explain this gap.



Mental job demands did not show a clear link with mental health in the Dutch analysis. That distinction lines up with the idea that chronic physical strain can cast a longer shadow into early retirement.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-of-retirement-effects">Timing of retirement effects</h2>



A previous <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21341882/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> referred to retirement adjustment as a resource based and multi-phase process, not a single step.



This study’s curves fit that picture, with a short boost in the retirement year and, for some groups, a later fade as new realities, routines, and finances settle in.



Among high-income earners, retiring later in life was tied to a slower improvement during the retirement year.



That does not mean late retirement is harmful, only that the short term lift may be smaller when people work longer.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-this-matters-for-policy">Why this matters for policy</h2>



In the Netherlands, the AOW pension <a href="https://www.netherlandsworldwide.nl/aow-pension-abroad/age" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">age</a> is 67 for most people in 2025, which helps explain why many in the sample retired in their late sixties.



Understanding when dips are most likely allows families and services to time support before problems settle in.



All income groups generally experienced improvements in mental health during the shift to retirement, but there were also phases where declines appeared. These vulnerable periods suggest that targeted support could be especially valuable.



Targeted help could include financial counseling for newly retired low-income adults, peer groups for single women who are retiring with fewer resources, and easier pathways to part time, less physically demanding roles in the years before retirement.



For employers, reducing physical strain in the last working years could pay dividends by protecting mental health into retirement.



For health systems, screening with tools like the MHI 5 can flag risk early so people are not left to struggle alone after the first couple of years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limitations-of-the-study">Limitations of the study</h2>



The MHI 5 has good accuracy for identifying people at high risk of mood and anxiety disorders in population studies, so it fits large longitudinal panels.



Piecewise models make room for rapid changes and slow drifts, and the Dutch probability sample strengthens the case that these patterns are not just artifacts of convenience sampling.



Still, the researchers followed people in one country with a specific pension design, and it did not separate voluntary from involuntary retirement.



The study’s limitations point to a clear next step: testing whether similar multi-phase patterns emerge under different pension rules and across groups with varied jobs and resources.

Two new studies focused on the timing of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/physical-exercise-strengthen-brain/">exercise</a> have confirmed that the circadian clock is an important factor in how the body responds to physical activity. According to the research, evening exercise seems to be the most productive, but lifestyle differences make the results more complicated. 

Gad Asher is an expert in the Department of Biomolecular Sciences at the <a href="https://www.weizmann.ac.il/">Weizmann Institute of Science</a>, and the senior author of one of the studies.

“It's quite well known that almost every aspect of our physiology and metabolism is dictated by the circadian clock," said Asher. “This is true not only in humans but in every organism that is sensitive to light. We decided to ask whether there is a connection between the time of day and exercise performance.”

“Circadian rhythms dominate everything we do,” added Paolo Sassone-Corsi of the Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism at the <a href="https://uci.edu/">University of California, Irvine</a>, who is the senior author of the second paper. “Previous studies from our lab have suggested that at least 50% of our metabolism is circadian, and 50% of the metabolites in our body oscillate based on the circadian cycle. It makes sense that exercise would be one of the things that's impacted.”

The research teams both investigated the association between time of day and exercise performance in mice. Asher's group put mice on treadmills at different times within their active phase. The experts found that overall exercise performance was about 50 percent better during the “mouse evening,” or toward the end of their active time. 

The researchers also found that there were higher levels of a metabolite called ZMP in response to exercise in the mouse evening. ZMP is known to activate metabolic pathways that are related to glycolysis and fatty acid oxidation through activation of AMPK, which is a master cellular metabolic regulator. 

“Interestingly, ZMP is an endogenous analog of AICAR (aminoimidazole carboxamide riboside), a compound that some athletes use for doping,” said Asher.

A trial in 12 humans was found to produce similar effects. Overall, people in the study had better exercise efficiency in the evening compared with the morning.

Using a different approach that involved high-throughput transcriptomics and metabolomics, Sassone-Corsi's team also put mice on treadmills. This enabled them to characterize changes in the mice's muscle tissue in response to exercise.

The experts found that a relevant protein called hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) is activated by exercise in different ways depending on the time of day. “It makes sense that HIF-1α would be important here, but until now we didn't know that its levels fluctuate based on the time of day,” said Sassone-Corsi. “This is a new finding.”

Based on this research, exercise seemed to have the most beneficial impact on metabolism at the beginning of the active phase - during the late morning in humans - instead of in the evening. 

The study authors noted that even though circadian clocks have been conserved throughout evolution, translating the findings to humans is not so straightforward. For example, humans have more variation in their chronotypes than mice living in a lab. 

“You may be a morning person, or you may be a night person, and those things have to be taken into account,” said Sassone-Corsi.

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/home">Cell Metabolism</a>.

Even low-intensity exercise is enough to maintain a healthy brain. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.bumc.bu.edu/busm/">Boston University School of Medicine</a> have found that consistent exercise is linked to larger brain volume and healthy brain aging. The study has revealed that physical activity helps prevent cognitive decline regardless of the intensity level of the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/body-exercise-time-day/">exercise</a>.

A growing collection of studies suggest that regular exercise can slow the brain’s aging process. People who are active have lower metabolic and vascular risk factors that may explain how they maintain healthier brains, yet the specific amount of activity needed to achieve this effect has remained unclear.

According to the 2018 Physical Activity-Guidelines for Americans, some physical activity is better than none. For substantial health benefits, 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous (MV) physical activity is recommended per week.


Based on data from the Framingham Heart Study, the current investigation revealed that each additional hour spent in light-intensity physical activity was equivalent to approximately 1.1 years less brain aging. 

The findings indicate that the target needed to reap the cognitive benefits of physical activity may be easier to achieve than what was previously thought. 

“Every additional hour of light intensity physical activity was associated with higher brain volumes, even among individuals not meeting current Physical Activity-Guidelines. These data are consistent with the notion that potential benefits of physical activity on brain aging may accrue at a lower, more achievable level of intensity or volume,” explained Dr. Nicole Spartano. “We have really only just begun to uncover the relationship between physical activity and brain health.” 

“We couldn't do this research without the commitment of the Framingham Heart Study participants who have given so much to the medical community over the years. Our research also hinges on the multi-disciplinary team of investigators at Boston University and external collaborators.”

The research was supported by the National Institute on Aging, American Heart Association, and the Alzheimer's Association.

Lovers of spicy foods seem to enjoy and even seek out the painful tingling and burning sensation that comes with biting into a dish flavored with hot sauces, spices, or peppers. 

A runny nose, watery eyes, and a burn that no amount of water can help quench are all par for the course when it comes to spicy foods, and researchers now understand why our bodies react to spice in this way. 

A recent <a href="http://time.com/5566993/why-spicy-food-makes-your-nose-run/?utm_source=emailshare&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=email-share-article&amp;utm_content=20190418">Time Magazine</a> feature delved into why spicy foods “burn so good,” and the health benefits that come from eating them.

As soon as your tongue and mouth sense heat from a spicy dish, your nose and throat will start producing mucus in an attempt to help wash away the invasive sensation producing component. 

Even your stomach and the intestinal tract will generate more mucus, all in the hopes of “washing away” the problem, in this case, the spice. 

“When your mouth or throat encounters any foreign object that’s noxious, the thinking is that liquid helps to move that out,” Dr. Brett Corner, an ear, nose, and throat specialist from the <a href="http://www.uky.edu/">University of Kentucky</a>, told Time. 

In some cases, the increase in mucus and fluid will cause people to have diarrhea or stomach cramps. 

You can’t discuss spicy foods without talking about capsaicin. Capsaicin is a plant compound, and the reason why eating spicy foods can be so painful. Capsaicin targets a specific pain receptor which can cause a burning sensation, reddening of the skin and a rise in body temperature. 

Despite the initial pain inducing sensation, capsaicin can also work as a kind of <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3462993/">anesthetic</a> as the pain receptors become desensitized following capsaicin exposure. 

Many studies have found that eating spicy foods with capsaicin is good for you. Researchers have linked capsaicin to improved <a href="http://www.bmj.com/cgi/doi/10.1136/bmj.h3942">heart health</a> and a decreased risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spicy-chili-pepper-lung-cancer/">cancer </a>and obesity. 

One <a href="https://cardiab.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12933-015-0183-6">2015 study</a> found that capsaicin helps buffer against visceral fat build up which is a type of fat that accumulates in the gut. 

There is indeed a great deal of evidence that shows that adding a little capsaicin to your diet could be beneficial. For some people though, the exhilarating experience of eating painful spicy foods is just a thrilling adrenaline rush.

There has been a growing interest in the use of psychedelics like psilocybin or LSD to help treat mental disorders, but these hallucinogens often get a bad rap for their trippy side-effects. 

Despite the push to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magic-mushrooms-vote-medicinal-benefits/#.XJuqlChKhPY">legalize magic mushrooms</a> and the research exploring the potential mental health benefits of psychedelics, scientists know very little about how hallucinations work as far as the underlying brain activity that disrupts normal processing and cognition. 

But researchers from the <a href="https://ion.uoregon.edu/">Institute of Neuroscience at the University of Oregon</a> are now one step closer to revealing the mysteries of hallucinations after conducting a study with mice. 

The team examined the impacts of a hallucinogenic drug on neurons in the brains of mice and the study, published in the journal Cell Reports, could help shed light on disorders like schizophrenia. 

By inducing hallucinations in the mice, the researchers were able to gain a better understanding of how disrupted visual signals in the brain are linked to hallucinations. 

“We're interested in understanding how we create representations of the world using vision,” said Cris Niell, a senior author of the study. “In many areas of biology, one of the best ways to study a process is to observe what happens when it's perturbed.”

Interestingly, the researchers found that hallucinations are caused by reduced signaling in the visual cortex. 

“You might expect visual hallucinations would result from neurons in the brain firing like crazy, or by mismatched signals,” said Niell. “We were surprised to find that a hallucinogenic drug instead led to a reduction of activity in the visual cortex.” 

For the study, the researchers gave mice a drug called DOI (4-iodo-2,5- dimethoxyphenyl isopropylamine). It’s a drug that is easier to access and work with compared to other psychedelics like LSD because it isn’t regulated as a Schedule 1 drug by the <a href="https://www.dea.gov/">Drug Enforcement Agency</a> (DEA). 

The mice were then shown a series of images on a screen, and the researchers monitored neural responses in the mice with calcium imaging and single-unit electrophysiology. 

As signaling in the visual cortex declined, the neurons alternated their timing when firing. 

The signals that were being sent in the brain were similar to the signals in the brain of mice that were not given the drug, and only the timing and strength of the messages were different. 

“Understanding what's happening in the world is a balance of taking in information and your interpretation of that information,” said Niell “If you're putting less weight on what's going on around you but then overinterpreting it, that could lead to hallucinations.”

The researchers have uncovered an important piece of the puzzle, but it’s still just one part, and more studies are needed to see if the responses observed in the mice are comparable to the signaling that occurs in the human brain during hallucinations. 

“I don't feel like we've necessarily found the smoking gun for the entire underlying cause of hallucinations, but this is likely to be a piece of it,” said Neill. “The data we've collected will provide a foundation for additional studies going forward. In particular, we plan to use genetic manipulation to study particular parts of this circuit in more detail.”

A new study from <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">UC Berkeley</a> has investigated how much storage space your brain needs to learn its first <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/learn-language-deep-sleep/">language</a>. Using a mathematical technique known as information theory, the team determined that the average adult only uses about 1.5 megabytes of storage for access to the entire English language. 

“In terms of digital media storage, our knowledge of language almost fits compactly on a floppy disk,” wrote the study authors.The brain only needs a small amount of storage to learn a language.

The brain sorts through data to make sense of a word or sentence, and researchers led by Frank Mollica at the <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/">University of Rochester</a> set out to quantify how many bits of data are required. For example, the experts determined that the average English vocabulary set of 40,000 words requires about 400,000 bits of data storage.

The team used computer models to estimate the storage requirements needed for other factors as well, including language semantics and syntax, and discovered that approximately 12.5 million bits of information is necessary for language acquisition.

“Ours is the first study to put a number on the amount you have to learn to acquire language,” said study senior author Professor Steven Piantadosi. “It highlights that children and teens are remarkable learners, absorbing upwards of 1,000 bits of information each day.”

The study also revealed that linguistic knowledge focuses mostly on the meaning of words, as opposed to their complex arrangement.

“A lot of research on language learning focuses on syntax, like word order,” said Professor Piantadosi. “But our study shows that syntax represents just a tiny piece of language learning, and that the main difficulty has got to be in learning what so many words mean.”

The harmful relationship between sea turtles and light pollution has emerged as an important consideration in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/baby-sea-turtles-dying-plastic/">sea turtle</a> conservation. What is less known is the relationship between sea turtles and the tourists who visit them, and subsequently encourage increased development along pristine shorelines.

Light is an important navigation tool for sea turtles. But human interference through artificial light threatens to distort sea turtles’ ability to navigate and survive.

When newborn sea turtles first hatch on the beach they will stay beneath the sand and wait to emerge until nighttime after the temperature has cooled down, according to the<a href="https://myfwc.com/research/wildlife/sea-turtles/threats/artificial-lighting/"> Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission</a>.

Hatchlings will instinctively move towards the brightest area, which would naturally be the ocean, glowing from the reflection of the night sky. In an era of rapid human expansion, this is often not the case. Turtles may mistakenly follow the light shining from street lights and buildings where they are at an increased risk of mortality from fatigue, predation, dehydration, and collision with vehicles.

Light pollution may also impact mother sea turtles as they attempt to nest. In 2014, a<a href="https://conserveturtles.org/lights-out-for-sea-turtles/"> loggerhead turtle</a> looking to nest became disoriented by lights from a nearby condo and wandering into a street where she was struck and killed by a vehicle. Mothers may also refuse to nest on beaches where there are high levels of light pollution making it more difficult for her to successfully nest.

Similar to the glow of artificial lights, the scale of this problem is wide-reaching. It is<a href="https://www.darksky.org/our-work/sea-turtle-conservation/"> estimated</a> that millions of sea turtle hatchlings die as a result of light pollution every year in Florida alone. Sea turtles are considered among the<a href="https://www.fws.gov/home/feature/2007/seaturtles2.pdf"> world’s most imperiled wildlife</a> and six of the seven species are at risk of extinction.

Despite the dire state of the world’s sea turtles, light pollution is becoming increasingly more prevalent. A 2019<a href="https://zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/acv.12480"> study</a> found that less than one-third of the world’s Key Biodiversity Areas have completely pristine night skies and around one-half lie entirely under artificially bright skies.

Light pollution may be especially exacerbated near coastal destinations where tourists flock to visit sea turtles in person. Although many tourists likely visit sea turtles for altruistic reasons, the boom of this industry encourages increased development along shorelines. With urbanization comes lights from hotels, condos, restaurants, street lights and vehicles.

Compounding the issue further is the fact that many sea turtles hatch during the peak tourist season of summer and early fall.

Researchers examining the effect of tourism on sea turtle conservation on the island of Sal, Cape Verde Islands<a href="http://193.136.21.50/bitstream/10961/1547/1/Taylor%20%26%20Cozens%20Tourism-Turtles%20Sal.pdf"> found</a> a marked increase in the percentage of nests that needed to be moved each year due to light pollution. At one popular tourist spot, all of the sea turtle nests needed to be moved for two consecutive years.

In the United States, sea turtle tourism is prevalent in Florida, the home to<a href="https://conserveturtles.org/information-sea-turtles-threats-artificial-lighting/"> over 90%</a> of all sea turtle nesting in the continental United States and the largest population of loggerheads in the Western Hemisphere.

As an ecologically significant sea turtle hot-spot, the government and conservation groups have worked to control the state’s light pollution. These programs look to use the latest technology to mitigate the glow of artificial lights or simply encourage private properties to use less light altogether. To date,<a href="https://f50006a.eos-intl.net/ELIBSQL12_F50006A_Documents/TR-2Rev2.pdf"> at least 82 municipalities</a> in Florida have adopted lighting ordinances to regulate artificial lighting.

<a href="https://zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/rse2.12">Research</a> shows that these conservation initiatives have successfully reduced light pollution on beaches despite Florida’s expanding coastal development.

Mitigating light pollution can be an opportunity for the tourism sector to attract eco-conscious travelers and create a cozy and intimate environment by using soft lighting and candles at night.

Tourists can help encourage sustainable tourism by enquiring about light pollution before booking a stay at a coastal hotel. Additionally, local governments should not wait on private businesses to address light pollution and should designate priority areas for sea turtle conservation and adopt lighting ordinances.

Climate change will expose more people to mosquito-borne viruses. Globally, over a billion people are threatened by mosquito-borne viruses, such as <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-dengue-fever/">dengue</a>, chikungunya, and Zika. A new study published in <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosntds/">PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases</a> is warning that the combination of climate change and rising temperatures will expose more people to diseases carried by mosquitoes.

The most extreme increases in disease transmission are predicted to occur under intermediate climate change conditions. In particular, the study was focused on Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, mosquitoes that were once found mainly in Africa and the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia.

A team led by Sadie Ryan at the <a href="http://www.ufl.edu/">University of Florida</a> modified a previously developed Bayesian transmission model to analyze how climate change will impact virus-carrying mosquitoes. The adapted model enabled the researchers to track shifting global warming scenarios to determine where mosquitoes will migrate and how the number of disease transmissions will change over the next century.

The study results show that when the mosquito range shifts within optimal temperature ranges for transmission, we can expect poleward shifts in Aedes-borne virus distributions. 

Human exposure to mosquito-borne viruses is predicted to increase in Europe, while transmission from Ae. albopictus may decrease in southeast Asia and west Africa when when the worst-case scenario is applied. Surprisingly, a middle-of-the-road temperature increase could produce the largest expansion in viral transmission by Ae. albopictus. This contradicts theories that predict an increase in temperature will run parallel with a rise in illness.

“The dynamics of mosquito-borne illnesses are climate-driven, and current work suggests that climate change will dramatically increase the potential for expansion and intensification of Aedes-borne virus transmission within the next century,” wrote the researchers.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>.

Climate change contributes to global economic inequality. Economic inequality between lower income and more prosperous countries has decreased in recent years, narrowing a problematic gap in national GDPs worldwide. 

However, a new study has found that global warming is providing ample room for colder climate countries like Norway to thrive while warm climate countries like India suffer economic declines. 

In the world’s poorest countries, global warming decreased potential income earnings per person by 17 to 30 percent. 

Researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> conducted the study, and the results show that the gap between countries with the lowest and highest economies is 25 percent larger than it would have been due to climate change. 

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Our results show that most of the poorest countries on Earth are considerably poorer than they would have been without global warming,” said Noah Diffenbaugh, the lead author of the study. “At the same time, the majority of rich countries are richer than they would have been.”

The researchers built on previous data covering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-global-warming-hurts-the-world-economy/">50 years of annual temperature and GDP measurement comparisons</a> for 165 countries. 

Climate warming over the past 50 years benefitted colder countries but dragged down warm climate countries. 

“The historical data clearly show that crops are more productive, people are healthier and we are more productive at work when temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold,” said Marshall Burke, a co-author of the study. “This means that in cold countries, a little bit of warming can help. The opposite is true in places that are already hot.”

For this study, the researchers wanted to see how economic outputs would have changed given different climate scenarios depending on the country. 

The researchers analyzed data from more than 20 climate models and calculated more than 20,0000 annual economic growth rates per country under a no climate change scenario. 

The decline in economic growth rate for many warm, low-income countries, is the result of years and years of accumulating impacts from climate change. In India, the researchers found that the economy is 31 percent smaller than it would have been without global warming. 

“For most countries, whether global warming has helped or hurt economic growth is pretty certain,” said Burke. “There's essentially no uncertainty that they've [tropical countries] been harmed. It's a huge loss compared to where these countries would have been otherwise."

The study shows how climate change has impacted national economies for countries at either end of the climate spectrum, but for middle latitude countries like the US where climate change has been less pronounced, economic output has not been as greatly impacted. 

“A few of the largest economies are near the perfect temperature for economic output. Global warming hasn't pushed them off the top of the hill, and in many cases, it has pushed them toward it,” said Burke. “But a large amount of warming in the future will push them further and further from the temperature optimum.”

The researchers warn that as climate change increases and global temperatures rise, vulnerable economies will be further impacted. 

“The more these countries warm up, the more drag there's going to be on their development,” said Diffenbaugh said. “Historically, rapid economic development has been powered by fossil fuels. Our finding that global warming has exacerbated economic inequality suggests that there is an added economic benefit of energy sources that don't contribute to further warming.”

Health warnings have urged modern adults to get up and moving throughout the day, noting that long periods of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/sitting-watching-tv-colorectal-cancer/">sedentary behavior</a> can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, and shorten life spans. 

But according to new research from <a href="https://medicine.wustl.edu/">Washington University School of Medicine</a>, Americans spend more time sitting now than in years prior. 

Study leader Yin Cao, M.P.H., Sc.D. and team saw a 6 to 8 hour jump in the amount of hours adolescents and adults spent sitting between 2007 and 2016.

Compared to sitting for about an hour per day in 2007, adolescents in 2016 spent about 8.2 hours per day sitting. And adults in 2016 sat for about 6.4 hours per day.

To come to their conclusion, published in <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2731178?guestAccessKey=7a264df9-860b-4443-b743-87fc1d7f6b2b&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=042319">JAMA Network</a>, Cao and her team used data from nearly 52,000 kids, adolescents, and adults collected within the U.S. between 2001 and 2016. 

Between 2015 and 2016, an estimated 62% of children, 59% of adolescents, and 65% of adults sat and watched television or videos for at least two hours per day.

Furthermore, computer time among all age groups increased between the 15-year period, with the largest jump being in adults. 50% of adults spent more than an hour on the computer in 2016 compared to just 29% in 2003.

Most of the data was collected from self reporting, so the authors realize that their findings may not be completely accurate because of the potential for error. However, they note that the trends they found over the 15-year period are most likely not affected by incorrect self reporting.

A need to prevent danger or harm. Feeling to blame for negative events. Focusing on a problem, even when there isn’t a solution. These mindsets can lead to a sense of inflated responsibility, and that in turn can trigger OCD or an anxiety disorder, according to new research.

Occasional worrying is normal, and everyone thinks negative thoughts down and then. But when these thoughts begin disrupting day-to-day life, they could indicate obsessive-compulsive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder.

"People with OCD [are] tortured by repeatedly occurring negative thinking and they take some strategy to prevent it … GAD is a very pervasive type of anxiety. [Patients] worry about everything," co-author Dr. Yoshinori Sugiura of the <a href="https://www.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/en">University of Hiroshima</a> said in a press release.

It’s the difference between checking that the stove is off after dinner, and checking repeatedly throughout the evening and even into the next day even though you know it’s off, just in case.

 Sugiura and his co-author, Dr. Brian Fisak of the <a href="https://www.ucf.edu/">University of Central Florida</a>, took a look at “inflated responsibility” as a potential cause of these disabling mental health challenges. They hoped to streamline several competing theories about what triggers OCD and GAD.

For their study, Sugiura and Fisak sent online questionnaires to U.S. university students asking questions about responsibility and about thoughts and behaviors common in OCD and GAD. They found that the students who reported feeling a higher sense of responsibility also tended to show more anxiety and compulsive behaviors.

Sugiura and Fisak were quick to note that more research is needed before doctors can settle on inflated responsibility as the cause of these disorders. Their sample size was not large, and the majority of respondents were female university students, they said.

But they believe that helping patients reduce their sense of responsibility may help bring these disorders under control. 

"[A] very quick or easy way is to realize that responsibility is working behind your worry,” Sugiura said. “I ask [patients], ‘Why are you worried so much?’ so they will answer, ‘I can't help but worry,’ but they will not spontaneously think, ‘Because I feel responsibility’ ... just realizing it will make some space between responsibility thinking and your behavior."

The study has been published in the <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s41811-019-00041-x">International Journal of Cognitive Therapy</a>.

A new study from the <a href="https://www.upenn.edu/">University of Pennsylvania</a> has found that interference with natural circadian rhythms promotes tumor growth and suppresses the effects of a tumor-fighting drug. The findings highlight the need for “chronotherapy,” which is the delivery of cancer drugs timed to the internal <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/circadian-rhythm-light-melatonin/">circadian rhythm</a>.

In the background of our brain, a 24-hour clock keeps time for changes in our physical and mental cycles in response to environmental cues such as light and darkness. This natural circadian rhythm regulates many important aspects of our lives. 

Disruption of the brain’s circadian clock through sleep disturbances or shift work, for example, is a known risk factor for several types of cancer. While it is known that hormonally-induced circadian disruption promotes tumor growth in animal models, the underlying mechanism has not been clear.

To investigate, the researchers used the hormone dexamethasone to advance daily rhythms in cultured cells. The treatment was found to alter the expression of multiple genes, especially those involved in regulating the cell cycle. 

In particular, circadian rhythm disruption increased the expression of a cell-cycle control protein called cyclin D1. This activated cyclin D-dependent kinase 4/6, a step that ultimately leads to cell division.

Tumor growth is closely tied to cell division, so many cancer treatments aim to inhibit the progression of the cell cycle. The researchers found that the tumor-fighting ability of a drug called PD-0332991, which inhibits CDK4/6 activity, varies according to the time of the day. 

Essentially, the treatment was found to be more effective in the morning than at night. Furthermore, the efficacy of the drug was reduced in mice when their circadian rhythms were disrupted.

“We suggest that chronic disruption of the normal circadian rhythm tips the balance between tumor-suppressive and tumor-progressive gene expression to favor tumor growth,” said study co-author Amita Sehgal. “Better understanding the molecular effects of jet lag, shift work, and other sources of chronic disruption may lead to strategies to minimize the increased cancer risk associated with these behaviors, and to better treatment strategies, including timing delivery of cancer therapy for maximum benefit.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/">PLOS Biology</a>.

Disruption of the body’s circadian rhythm promotes tumor growth

A new study from the University of Pennsylvania has found...

The next time you go in for your annual checkup, you might consider having your <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smell-mixtures-scents/">sense of smell </a>checked too, as a new study has found surprising links between poor sense of smell and a higher risk of early death.

Although the reasons behind this correlation between sense of smell and increased risk of death remain unknown, researchers from <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a> conducted the first study of its kind to examine how the two are connected.

The study was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, and the results show that older adults who have a poor sense of smell have a nearly 50 percent increased risk of dying within ten years.

“Poor sense of smell becomes more common as people age, and there's a link to a higher risk for death,” said Honglei Chen, an epidemiologist and member of the research team. “Our study is the first to look at the potential reasons why it predicts a higher mortality.”

The researchers reviewed and analyzed data from nearly 2,300 participants aged 71 to 82 who were part of the <a href="https://healthabc.nia.nih.gov/">National Institute on Aging's Health ABC study</a>. Participants were followed for 13 years and the assessment included a smell test of 12 odors.

A poor sense of smell correlated with a 46 percent higher risk of death after 10 years and a 30 percent risk at 13 years.

The researchers accounted for several factors including sex, race, and lifestyle factors but the links stayed consistent.

Surprisingly, participants who were in good health at the start of the ABC study were at a higher risk which indicates that sense of smell should be taken seriously as a predictor of potential health problems.

A reduced sense of smell is an early sign of dementia and Parkinson’s, but these factors were not enough to explain the increased risk of death linked to smell and more research is needed to solve this connection.

“We don't have a reason for more than 70% of the increased risk. We need to find out what happened to these individuals,” said Chen. “It tells us that in older adults, impaired sense of smell has broader implications of health beyond what we have already known. Incorporating a sense of smell screening in routine doctor visits might be a good idea at some point.”

Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>



Why does a 385-million-year-old forest matter today? It shows how dramatically forests can change Earth's climate. These ancient woodlands created the atmospheric conditions supporting complex life.



Understanding how prehistoric forests transformed the planet helps us appreciate modern forests' critical role in addressing climate change. Forests remain Earth's most effective carbon capture systems.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Santiago, the capital city of Chile. The city is located in the center of the Santiago Metropolitan Region, which has a population of about eight million people.&nbsp;



'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

Lesotho: Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky" Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features northwest Lesotho in South Africa.



According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
