Mammals are not only good at hearing sounds, they are especially tuned to voices. A new cross-species study compared humans, dogs, and pigs and mapped how fast the brain flags a voice, then sorts out whether it belongs to one of our own.



The researchers recorded tiny pulses of brain activity while participants listened to people, dogs, and pigs, plus everyday noises. The animals were awake, relaxed, and unmedicated, and the sessions used gentle scalp sensors, not implants.



A team from <a href="https://www.elte.hu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eötvös Loránd University</a> (ELU) focused on two questions that cut to the heart of social hearing in mammals. 



The first was whether the brain treats vocal sounds as a distinct category, separate from other noises. The second was whether it goes a step further, recognizing and highlighting voices that belong to members of the same species - a process known as conspecific recognition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-brain-signals-to-sound">Tracking brain signals to sound</h2>



The setup used non-invasive EEG sensors to track the brain’s fast electrical responses to sound. The signal components the team examined are called event-related potentials, and they are well suited for timing how processing unfolds.



Participants heard short clips such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/laughter-makes-the-stress-of-life-feel-less-overwhelming/">laughs</a>, barks, and grunts, alongside non vocal noises like traffic or a closing door. 



The recordings let the researchers compare voice versus non-voice processing, then compare same species voices to all other sounds.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-step-brain-response">Two-step brain response</h2>



In humans and pigs, the brain marked any voice very quickly, within about 0.2 seconds after the sound began. 



Later, after roughly 0.3 seconds and beyond, all three species showed a second step that tagged same species voices as a special category.



“These patterns were very similar despite the large evolutionary distance between the three species, pointing to shared neural mechanisms that likely predate the divergence of their lineages some 90 million years ago,” said Boglárka Morvai, the study's lead author.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dogs-pigs-and-people">Dogs, pigs, and people</h2>



Dogs did not show the early “any voice” signal as clearly as humans and pigs, even though they live closely with people. 



They did show the later step that marked dog sounds as different from other sounds, which matches the idea that same species calls matter most for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-bacteria-influence-our-social-behavior-and-sense-of-fairness/">social behavior.</a>



Pigs showed both steps and did so on a similar time course to people. That pattern strengthens the case that the early voice flag is a general feature of mammal hearing, not a quirk of primates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-voice-areas-in-mammals">Voice areas in mammals</h2>



For two decades, brain imaging in humans has found voice sensitive regions in the superior temporal cortex, often called temporal voice areas. 



A comprehensive review outlines how these regions support recognition of who is speaking, what they feel, and how the voice changes over time.



Dogs have their own voice sensitive patches too, and they align in function with human areas when both species listen to vocal sounds.



 A comparative paper showed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lost-in-translation-how-we-misread-our-dogs-emotions/">dog</a> and human brains both devote cortex to processing voices, including sensitivity to emotional tone.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-speed-of-voice-detection">Speed of voice detection</h2>



Past EEG work in people has reported early differences between voice and non-voice sounds on the order of a fifth of a second. 



One open access article found effects emerging around 0.164 seconds and peaking near 0.2 seconds on frontotemporal sensors.



These timings line up with the early “any voice” response reported in the recent study. The later same species effect fits with known windows for categorical decisions in auditory cognition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pig-brains-and-voices">Pig brains and voices</h2>



Pigs are increasingly used in neuroscience because their brains share organizational features with ours. 



Recent physiology work has mapped clear auditory event-related responses in healthy piglets using scalp EEG, strengthening their value as a model species.&nbsp;



Finding the early voice flag in pigs suggests that this quick detection step is not limited to primates or carnivores. It likely reflects a basic property of mammalian hearing tuned by social life.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolutionary-roots-of-voice">Evolutionary roots of voice</h2>



The two-step pattern, first voice detection, then same species sorting, makes evolutionary sense. Fast detection buys time to orient toward a biologically relevant sound, then a later pass adds the social label needed to decide how to react.



If distantly related species share both steps, the underlying circuitry likely traces back to a common ancestor. That is consistent with decades of work showing conserved organization for voice and affect processing across mammals.



All recordings relied on cooperative, awake participation. Dogs and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/selective-breeding-has-dramatically-sped-up-the-evolution-of-pigs/">pigs</a> were measured in calm settings, often near their owners, and no training or sedation was required for them to rest while the sensors recorded.



The protocol emphasizes trust and low stress, which improves data quality and respects the welfare of companion animals. The approach also allows direct comparisons with human EEG.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sorting-same-species-voices">Sorting same-species voices</h2>



Same-species voices carry information about identity, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-identify-the-simple-emotion-that-gives-life-meaning-and-its-not-happiness/">emotion</a>, age, and intent. That richer meaning calls for more processing than a quick voice versus non-voice flag.



The later timing suggests a categorical decision process in which the brain checks acoustic features against learned templates for its own kind. 



In humans, that machinery feeds into language, but it operates in social mammals that do not use speech.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-voice-studies">Future of voice studies</h2>



Future studies can add more species and test a wider range of calls to see how acoustic structure shapes the early and late steps. Portable EEG could expand testing into natural settings where animals communicate most.



Combining EEG with imaging can also map the timing onto brain regions, tying the fast electrical signatures to specific circuits. That could clarify how the two steps interact during real world social listening.



Better models of voice processing can guide assistive tech for people with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drugs-may-be-available-to-prevent-hearing-loss/">hearing</a> or language challenges. They can also inform animal welfare by helping us detect stress or need from vocal cues in pets and livestock.



Cross species designs like this one keep us honest about what is uniquely human and what is widely shared. That distinction matters for both neuroscience and ethics.

A new study has found that the answer surprisingly doesn’t lie in body language or how long it takes for someone to text you back after a date, but rather if your heart rates sync up.

Researchers from <a href="https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en">Leiden University</a> in the Netherlands studied physiological markers in real-life dating settings to determine if attraction was something that could be measured. 

“You hear about people who are well suited to each other in theory but there is no spark – we wanted to know if you can quantify the spark,” said Mariska Kret, a co-author of the study, at the European Federation of Primatology meeting which took place in Oxford. 

For the study, the researchers set up camp at a music festival and had a cabin where festival-goers could go on mini “blind dates” with potential partners. 140 people took part in the study, according to <a href="https://www.newscientist.com/article/2217297-when-two-people-fancy-each-other-their-heart-rates-jump-in-harmony/">New Scientist</a>, which reported on the findings. 

Participants were given two minutes to look at each other and then had another two minutes to talk. 

During these short meetings, the researchers asked the participants to wear special eye-tracking glasses that were embedded with cameras and devices that measured heart rate and skin conductance. 

The skin conductance response is the measure of the changes in conductivity in the skin due to emotions and stress. 

The researchers asked the participants questions about the meetings and if they wanted to go on a real date. 

The researchers found that visible markers like eye contact, mirroring body language, or facial expressions did not predict whether or not couples were attracted to each other. Instead, attraction was rooted in unconscious physiological signals like heart rate and body sweat. 

The more two heart rates synced up, the more likely those two people reported feeling attracted. 

“There was no body language to tell you if your partner was interested – physiology is where we found much better estimates,” said Eliska Prochazkova, an author of the study. “We can’t perceive the other person’s heart. But often our subconscious can be influenced by our physiology.”

The yet-to-be formally reviewed study findings were published to the preprint server <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/748707v1">bioRxiv.</a>

Tsunamis may have pushed a tropical disease into the Pacific Northwest. Since 1999, hundreds of people and animals in the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/pacific-northwest-forests-wildfire-birds/">Pacific Northwest</a> have been infected by a tropical fungus, Cryptococcus gattii, which is mainly found in Brazil and other parts of South America. 

An investigation led by researchers at the <a href="https://www.jhsph.edu/">Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health</a> has now revealed that the fungus may have been translocated by the Great Alaskan Earthquake of 1964 and its subsequent tsunamis.

The experts propose that ships likely initiated the northward spread of C. gattii by transporting it in their ballast tanks after the 1914 opening of the Panama Canal. Decades later, multiple tsunamis that were triggered by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake in Alaska could have pushed the tropical fungus onshore into coastal forest regions. 

"The big new idea here is that tsunamis may be a significant mechanism by which pathogens spread from oceans and estuarial rivers onto land and then eventually to wildlife and humans," said study co-author Dr. Arturo Casadevall. "If this hypothesis is correct, then we may eventually see similar outbreaks of C. gattii, or similar fungi, in areas inundated by the 2004 Indonesian tsunami and 2011 Japanese tsunami."

Since the first case of C. gattii was reported on Vancouver Island 20 years ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has documented more than 300 infections in the Canadian and U.S. Pacific Northwest region. The fungus typically infects people through inhalation, causing a pneumonia-like illness. If the infection spreads to the brain, C. gattii can lead to potentially fatal meningoencephalitis. 

Evidence of C. gattii has been found in soil, water, and trees across coastal areas of British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. However, experts could not understand how this tropical fungus could establish itself in a northern region with a cool climate. Study co-author and epidemiologist Dr. David Engelthaler was asked by the CDC to investigate. 

Dr. Engelthaler's team applied a "molecular clock" analysis to the DNA sequences of the C. gattii subtypes, and concluded that these strains of the fungus had arrived from an area in or surrounding Brazil 60-100 years earlier. This time frame corresponds with the opening of the Panama Canal. 

Dr. Engelthaler also concluded that the regions which were colonized by several subtypes of C. gattii were the same areas of the Pacific Northwest that were inundated with seawater during the 1964 tsunamis.

"We propose that C. gattii may have lost much of its human-infecting capacity when it was living in seawater, but then when it got to land, amoebas and other soil organisms worked on it for three decades or so until new C. gattii variants arose that were more pathogenic to animals and people," said Dr. Casadevall.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/13652486">Global Change Biology</a>.

The <a href="https://deepcarbon.net/">Deep Carbon Observatory</a> (DCO) program has released the findings of a ten-year study designed to calculate the immense carbon reserves of our planet, including how much carbon is naturally taken in and released by the Earth's crust, mantle, and core. The research spans time from the present to billions of years past.

"Carbon, the basis of all life and the energy source vital to humanity, moves through this planet from its mantle to the atmosphere. To secure a sustainable future, it is of utmost importance that we understand Earth's entire carbon cycle," said DCO scientist Marie Edmonds.

"Key to unraveling the planet's natural carbon cycle is quantifying how much carbon there is and where, how much moves - the flux - and how quickly, from Deep Earth reservoirs to the surface and back again."

The experts found that just .002 percent of Earth's total <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/fast-fashion-carbon-footprint/">carbon</a>, or 43,500 gigatons, is above its surface in the oceans, on land, and in the atmosphere. The rest is located in the subsurface, with an estimated 1.85 billion gigatons overall.

Looking at Earth's deep carbon cycle over time, the researchers found balanced, long-term stability in atmospheric CO2 levels. The team also determined that this balance was altered by major events, such as the massive Chixculub impact in the Yucatan area of Central America, at least five times in the past 500 million years. Catastrophic volumes of carbon were outgassed during these disruptions, leading to a warmer atmosphere, acidified oceans, and mass extinctions.

Today, volcanoes and other active regions release an estimated 280 to 360 million tons per year into the atmosphere and oceans, including the carbon released from mid-ocean ridges. Annual carbon emissions from human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, were found to be 40 to 100 times greater than overall volcanic emissions.

According to the DCO researchers, with rare exceptions over millions of years, the quantity of carbon released from Earth's mantle has been in relative balance with the quantity returned through the downward subduction of tectonic plates and other processes. 

However, this balance was disrupted by large volcanic events about four times in Earth's history. Carbon cycle imbalance can cause accelerated global warming, changes to the silicate weathering rate, changes to the hydrologic cycle, and intense habitat shifts that can lead to mass extinction as the Earth rebalances itself.

"The Deep Carbon Observatory has advanced understanding of the inner workings of Earth. Its collective body of more than 1,500 publications has not only increased what is known but established limits to what is knowable, and perhaps unknowable," said study co-author Tobias Fischer of the University of New Mexico.

"While we celebrate progress, we underline that deep Earth remains a highly unpredictable scientific frontier; we have truly only started to dent current boundaries of our knowledge."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.geoscienceworld.org/elements">Elements</a>.

As part of the Clean Space initiative, the <a href="http://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> (ESA) launched an investigation into the potential for citric acid to replace nitric acid as a natural solution to corrosion in 2014.

More recently, a project by the Technology Development Element Program (TDE) tested the use of citric acid for passivating the typical stainless steel grades used in spacecraft and ground support structures.

Passivation is the process of treating a metal to reduce the chemical reactivity of its surface, which is typically accomplished by immersing an industrial part in a bath of nitric acid. When a metal is passivated, it has a longer life span, a tougher resistance to rust, and a smooth, polished appearance.

Despite its widespread use, nitric acid poses a threat to both public health and the environment due to its highly acidic nature. Nitric acid produces toxic fumes, hazardous waste, and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gases-climate/">greenhouse gases</a>. By contrast, citric acid - which is the same acid found in lemon juice - requires lower acid concentrations and does not generate toxic fumes or hazardous waste.

The TDE project was focused on the effectiveness of citric acid in treating three stainless steel grades made from various metallurgical types. After they were passivated with citric acid, the scientists tested the chemical composition, corrosion resistance, and the mechanical properties of the specimens and then compared this with specimens that were passivated with nitric acid.

The study revealed that specimens which had been treated with environmentally friendly citric acid demonstrated equal or better performance in corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. The success of the project has led to the development of a follow-up experiment.

Citric acid has the potential to replace nitric acid for treating metal

The molecular basis of life may have first emerged in interstellar clouds. Nitrogen-containing compounds called nucleobases are the essential building blocks of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/denisovans-looked/">DNA</a>. In a new study from <a href="https://www.global.hokudai.ac.jp/">Hokkaido University</a>, scientists have found evidence that nucleobases may have originated in gaseous clouds that are scattered between stars. For the first time, the compounds have been detected in a simulated environment.

"This result could be key to unravelling fundamental questions for humankind, such as what organic compounds existed during the formation of the solar system and how they contributed to the birth of life on Earth," said study lead author Yasuhiro Oba.

Scientists have already detected some of the organic molecules necessary for life in gaseous clouds, as well as in comets and asteroids. The molecules may have reached Earth through meteorite impacts four billion years ago, providing the basis for life. If scientists can gain a better understanding of how these molecules initially formed, they can gain valuable insight into life's mysterious origin.

The most basic structural units of DNA and RNA, known as nucleotides, contain a nucleobase, a sugar, and a phosphate group. Previous studies that imitated the conditions of interstellar clouds have identified the presence of sugar and phosphate, but nucleobases were not detected. Oba's team has now used advanced analytical methods to detect the fundamental nucleobases in a simulated interstellar cloud environment.

Experimenting in an ultra-high vacuum reaction chamber, the researchers continuously pumped a gaseous mixture of water, carbon monoxide, ammonia, and methanol onto a cosmic-dust analogue at a temperature of -263° Celsius. When ultraviolet light was used to induce chemical reactions, an icy film developed on the dust analogue.

The chamber was warmed to room temperature, and a high-resolution mass spectrometer was used to analyze the film. Combined with the use of high-performance liquid chromatography, the experts detected the presence of the nucleobases cytosine, uracil, thymine, adenine, xanthine, and hypoxanthine. They also detected amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins, and several kinds of dipeptide.

The team speculates that nucleobases were also present in past experiments which simulated interstellar molecular cloud environments, but that the analytical tools used were not sensitive enough to detect them. "Our findings suggest that the processes we reproduced could lead to the formation of the molecular precursors of life," said Oba. "The results could improve our understanding of the early stages of chemical evolution in space."

Increases in ocean temperature and acidity due to climate change have been linked to mass coral bleaching events and the decline of coral reef ecosystems.

Corals offer protection against flooding and storm surges and reef habitats host a diverse <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restoring-coral-reefs-benefits/">array of marine species</a> that depend on corals for their survival. 

 As carbon emissions increase, more CO2 gets absorbed into the ocean which lowers the pH of seawater. Increased acidity is a key contributor to coral bleaching, and a United Nations report found that <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/climatechange/10458445/Ocean-acidity-to-more-than-double-by-2100.html">ocean acidity could double by 2100</a>. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://stri.si.edu/">Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute</a> set out to investigate the effects of ocean acidification on coral reef health.  

However, while many studies on coral reefs have asked these same questions, for this project, the researchers took their experiments away from the aquarium and into the ocean.  

“We wanted to get away from experiments in glass boxes and do them on the reef under natural conditions,” said David Kline, the leader of the study. “But we never imagined the differences would be so dramatic.”

Over a period of eight months, the researchers lowered the pH of seawater surrounding a living reef. 

A device called the Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment (FOCE) system was used to pump carbon into the water which would show first hand how reefs respond to ocean acidification and if they can adapt to a rapidly changing environment. The researchers went through around five tanks of CO2 gas.  

“Our underwater time machine (also called a Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment or FOCE system) used an array of sensors and dosing pumps to simulate future high CO2 conditions by controlled pumping of high CO2 seawater over both living and dead Porites cylindrica colonies in our open experimental flumes on the reef flat at the University of Queensland’s Heron Island field station on the Great Barrier Reef,” said Kline. 

The reef went through a drastic transformation, and both living and dead corals were negatively affected by the increased acidity. Coral growth rates dropped to almost zero, and dead corals started dissolving twice as fast. 

The results show that coral reef declines may occur sooner than previously realized. There was one silver lining to the study. The corals that were covered with living tissue were more resilient than their dead coral counterparts.

“The huge difference between the fate of living and dead corals in a natural environment gives me hope,” said Kline. “As we create marine reserves and learn how to increase the amount of living coral by restoring reefs, we’re setting up a positive feedback loop because living coral will grow the reef and slow dissolution.”

NASA will develop a $600 million telescope to detect near-Earth objects. NASA is developing a $600 million orbiting telescope to help protect the planet from potentially dangerous <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/space-agencies-asteroid-defense/">asteroids</a>. Plans for the planetary defense system were prioritized after a close encounter with an asteroid went nearly undetected this summer.

In July, a Brazilian observatory spotted "2019 OK" only 24 hours before it passed Earth at a speed of nearly 55,000 miles per hour within just 44,300 miles. This is less than one-fifth of the distance to the Moon, and is referred to in astronomical terms as a "near-miss."

"If 2019 OK had entered and disrupted in Earth’s atmosphere over land, the blast wave could have created localized devastation to an area roughly 50 miles across,” NASA said in a press release.

In an email to colleagues, Paul Chodas of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory described OK as a "sneaky" space rock. “This object slipped through a whole series of our capture nets,” he wrote. “I wonder how many times this situation has happened without the asteroid being discovered at all.”

The new NASA project is aimed at giving scientists much more warning in advance of an approaching asteroid. The Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveillance Mission is based on the NEOCam Mission, which has been stuck in the design phase for years as other Discovery Program initiatives took precedent.

Dr. Amy Mainzer of NASA's asteroid hunting mission said that trying to spot asteroids with current telescopes is like trying to spot a "lump of coal in the night sky." She explained that the technology we have available now is ineffective at detecting asteroids in time to avert a potentially catastrophic impact.

NASA associate administrator Thomas Zurbuchen said the surveillance mission should help to detect around 65 percent of the presently-unknown near-Earth objects, or NEOs, within its first five years of operation, adding that this figure should reach 90 percent within a decade of its launch. 

The infrared-based telescope will be designated as a "planetary defense" strategy rather than a scientific mission, and the development will be led by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The researchers have meticulously analyzed evidence which shows that, for more than 300,000 years, <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/carnivores-healthy-ecosystem/">large carnivores</a> competed with ancient humans for shelter at this site.

Using modern geoarchaeological techniques, a team of Russian and Australian scientists found that non-human predators, such as wolves and hyenas, predominantly inhabited the Denisova Cave.

The analysis of fossilized animal droppings, charcoal from ancient fires, and bone fragments suggests that nomadic human groups occupied the cave for short time periods, while the fierce animals were present at all other times. 

"Using microscopic analyses, our latest study shows sporadic hominin visits, illustrated by traces of the use of fire such as miniscule fragments, but with continuous use of the site by cave-dwelling carnivores such as hyenas and wolves," explained study co-author Professor Roberts.

"Fossil droppings (coprolites) indicate the persistent presence of non-human cave dwellers, which are very unlikely to have cohabited with humans using the cave for shelter."

Located in the Altai Mountains, the Denisova cave is one of the most important human evolution sites in the world. Around ten years ago, the cave became famous when experts discovered the fossil remains of a previously unknown group of humans, who are now known as Denisovans.

Dirt deposited in the cave over thousands of years contains evidence that at least two additional human groups - Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens - have also used the cave for shelter.

"These hominin groups and large carnivores such as hyenas and wolves left a wealth of microscopic traces that illuminate the use of the cave over the last three glacial-interglacial cycles," explained study lead author Dr. Mike Morley.

"Our results complement previous work by some of our colleagues at the site that has identified ancient DNA in the same dirt, belonging to Neanderthals and a previously unknown human group, the Denisovans, as well as a wide range of other animals."

The team found critical new clues about the use of the cave and other information in the sediment that had not yet been described. According to Professor Roberts, the research is very significant because it shows how much can be achieved by sifting through sedimentary material using advanced microscopy and other archaeological science methods.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/srep/">Scientific Reports</a>.

Tracking the global distribution of a frog-killing fungus. Researchers from the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a> have mapped the distribution and spread of a deadly fungal disease that is rapidly wiping out amphibians. 

Chytrid is the name given to nearly 1,000 species of fungi, and some variants are more harmful than others. The variety Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, which was first discovered in the 1990s, is deadly to frogs and has been linked to amphibian extinctions on a global scale. 

One study, published in the journal <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/363/6434/1459">Science</a>, found that Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis had caused declines in nearly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fungal-disease-mass-amphibian-extinction/">501 species of amphibians</a> over the years. 

“Amphibians are already one of the most imperiled groups on the planet, and this fungal disease is further threatening their biodiversity,” said Erica Bree Rosenblum, an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. 

Rosenblum, along with an international team of researchers, analyzed swabs taken from the skin of hundreds of frogs to help track the disease and map the geography of the different genetic lineages of the fungus.  

Knowing which variants that a frog is most susceptible to based on its geographic range could help prevent the spread of disease and reduce frog declines. 

“An invisible aspect of globalization is that when we move plants and animals around, we are moving their diseases around, and that can have really devastating consequences,” said Rosenblum. “If we know what lineages are where, we can better predict conservation outcomes, because some of these lineages are really deadly, and others less so.” 

Tracing the genetic lineage of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis is incredibly challenging because so much about the variety remains a mystery. 

For this study, the researchers found a way to determine which variant of fungus a frog was infected with using just a skin swab. This shortcut was helpful because it saved the researchers from having to sequence the entire, lengthy genome. Tracking the global distribution of a frog-killing fungus

“Now, from these skin swabs, we can figure out not just that this frog is infected, but specifically what lineage of the disease it carries,” said Rosenblum. “Is it the same lineage that infects the frog living next door, or in another country, or across the world?”

The researchers were able to map the distribution of four known lineages of the disease, and the analysis also revealed a new lineage that likely originated in Asia.  

Even though chytrid is widespread, the study shows that policies limiting the trade and transport of frogs across international borders could help reduce the risk of deadly pathogens spreading to other regions. 

The study findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The authors of a new study propose that viewing past human populations as a progression of separate or distinct branches on an evolutionary tree may be misleading because it reduces the human story to a series of "splitting times" that is unrealistic. According to the experts, the quest to pinpoint a single location for the origin of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/modern-humans-immunity-denisovans/">modern humans</a> is basically a wild goose chase. 

Study lead author Dr. Eleanor Scerri is an archaeologist at the <a href="https://www.shh.mpg.de/en">Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History</a> and heads the Pan-African Evolution Research Group.

"People like us began to appear sometime between 500,000 and 300,000 years ago," said Dr. Scerri. "That is something in the order of 8,000 generations, a long time for early people to move around and explore a big space. Their movements, patterns of mixing and genetic exchanges are what gave rise to us."

Professor Mark Thomas of University College London explained that the genetics of modern humans is very clear, with the greatest genetic diversity found among Africans. 

"The old theory that we descend from regional populations spread across the Old World over the last million years or so is not supported by genetics data. Sure, non-Africans today have some ancestry from Neanderthals, and some have appreciable ancestry from the recently discovered Denisovans. And maybe other, as yet undiscovered ancient hominin groups also interbred with us, Homo sapiens. But none of this changes the fact that more than 90% of the ancestry of everybody in the world lies in Africa over the last 100,000 years," said Professor Thomas. 

"The problem is that knowing that we are an African species has led many to ask the question 'where in Africa.' Superficially this is a reasonable question. But when we consider the genetic patterns alongside what we know of fossils, ancient tools, and ancient climates, the 'single region of origin' view just doesn't cut it, and we have to start thinking differently. This means different models, and we argue in the current paper that structured population models are the way forward."

Dr. Lounès Chikhi of the University of Toulouse explained that the interpretation of the available data changes when it is viewed through the lens of dynamic changes in connectivity, or metapopulations.

"Instead of a series of population splits branching off an ancestral tree, changes in connectivity between different populations over time seem a more reasonable assumption, and appear to explain several patterns of genomic diversity not explained by current alternative models," said Dr. Chikhi. 

"Metapopulations are the kind of model you'd expect if people were moving around and mixing over long periods and wide geographic areas. We cannot objectively identify this geographic area today from genetic data alone, but data from other disciplines suggest that the African continent represents the most likely geographical scale."

The scientists argue that viewing the human story as a "dynamic interconnected patchwork of populations" is better supported by the fossil, genetic, and archaeological evidence. In addition, this approach better explains the palaeoanthropological record beyond Africa.

"We see physically diverse early human fossils from across Africa, some very old genetic lineages and a pan-African shift in technology and material culture that reflects advanced cognition, including new technical and social innovations, across the continent. In other words, what you'd expect from a dynamic interconnected patchwork of populations that were at times more or less isolated from each other," said Dr. Scerri. "This would also help to explain the increasing evidence for unexpected populations, including in areas outside Africa such as the Hobbits on Flores."

The study authors emphasize that what this really means is that the scientific community may finally have the means to address complex questions in human evolutionary studies that could not be addressed previously.

"We have so much new data now from genetics, archaeology and fossils, and a better understanding of how past climates and environments affected early people. We have come to a point where the old models are constraining progress in our understanding of the past," said Dr. Chikhi.

"A metapopulation model helps us to find a way to acknowledge the paleontological, archaeological and genetic evidence for a recent African origin with limited gene flow from non-African metapopulations, such as Neanderthals, without falling into overly polemic and restrictive debates," added Dr. Scerri.

"Our African origins cannot be denied, but we definitely don't yet have the resolution to include or exclude different bits of evidence simply because they don't fit with a particular view. We need better reasons than that."

Professor Thomas suggested that the human record starts to make a lot more sense when studied from the perspective of changes in connectivity. 

"We need such flexibility to be able to make sense of the past, or we get lost in a malaise of ever-increasing named species, failed trajectories and population trees that never existed," said Professor Thomas. "Science always favors the simpler explanation and it is becoming increasingly difficult to stick to old narratives when they have to become over-complicated in order to stay relevant."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/natecolevol/">Nature Ecology and Evolution</a>.

Researchers at <a href="https://www.psu.edu/">Penn State</a> have modified a smartphone application so that it can predict near-term crop productivity for farmers in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/smoke-fires-africa-fertilize-amazon/">Africa</a>, which may help to protect major crops from the consequences of climate change. The experts will introduce their new tool today as the <a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/">United Nations Climate Action Summit</a> takes place in New York City.

PlantVillage Nuru is already being used in Africa to diagnose crop diseases. The Penn State team previously demonstrated that this application is twice as accurate as humans, and has improved the ability of farmers to identify problems on their own farms. Through the use of artificial intelligence, PlantVillage Nuru can now predict crop productivity based on water availability. The AI tool draws relevant information from the UN's WaPOR portal, which combines 10 years of NASA satellite observations. The smartphone application also has access to weather and soil data, as well as the United Nations Crop Calendar.

"Hundreds of millions of African farmers are already suffering from the effects of climate change," said Professor David Hughes. "For example, earlier this year, which has been the hottest year on record, Mozambique was hit with two cyclones, both among the strongest ever recorded in East Africa. They caused almost $1 billion in damages and destroyed nearly 80 percent of staple crops throughout the region. They also changed rainfall patterns across East Africa, which further affected the crops."

Hughes added that the majority of these farmers remain unprepared for the climate change impacts that are yet to come. For example, the majority of African farmers rely solely on rain to irrigate their crops, and many will not be able to handle the increasing drought conditions. 

The new PlantVillage AI tool integrates tens of thousands of data points across Africa, with hundreds more being collected every day. The AI assistant has the capacity to keep farmers informed in various ways, such as offering advice on flood mitigation, soil conservation, or on which crops are the most suitable for which regions. 

"Our goal is to nudge behavioral changes that will help farmers prepare their farms to be climate ready," said Hughes. "There are proactive behaviors, such as planting for increased crop diversity, promoting soil moisture conservation and engaging in water harvesting, that are known to increase resiliency."

"Our AI tool is in the early stages, but it will get better over time and with more training. We are releasing it now so we can kick-start the necessary collaboration we need to help African farmers adapt to climate change. As the African proverb says: 'If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.' Climate change means we must act together to help those most in need."

The PlantVillage AI tool will be unveiled on September 23, 2019, to coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit.

US government grants $3 million for CBD pain relief research. The US government will spend $3 million on medical marijuana research focusing on the effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cbd-treatment-opioid-heroin-addiction/">cannabidiol (CBD)</a> and hundreds of other chemicals found in the drug. 

On Thursday, nine research grants and funding were awarded to help determine whether or not marijuana is an effective pain reliever. 

None of the grants will go to THC research, the main psychoactive component in marijuana. 

THC has been the focus of many studies, but the increased risk of addiction and abuse are too great for THC to be considered as a viable option for pain relief. 

CBD, on the other hand, does not make you “high” because it’s non-psychoactive, and has become a trendy ingredient in cosmetics and foods.  

Marijuana is still considered a controlled substance and illegal under federal law. However, more than 30 states have legalized the drug for medicinal purposes. 

Whether or not medicinal marijuana is an effective treatment option and how to avoid the psychoactive effects of THC remains poorly understood. 

“The science is lagging behind the public use and interest. We’re doing our best to catch up here,” Dr. David Shurtleff, deputy director of the <a href="https://nccih.nih.gov/">National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health</a>, told the <a href="https://apnews.com/6c7f1be6ed7a440680aada789e61b10f">Associated Press.</a> 

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is funding the research grants. 

One of the main reasons the government is investing so much into medical marijuana research is the country-wide opioid crisis. Opioids are highly addictive but were widely prescribed and used to treat pain leading to an increase in addiction and opioid-related overdoses in recent years. 

CBD and other components of marijuana may offer innovative solutions to treat and study pain. 

Only one of the research projects awarded funding will have human test subjects. 

The study, conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.utah.edu/">University of Utah</a>, will involve taking brain scans of participants after ingesting a CBD extract. The researchers hope to see if the CBD extract helps with lower back pain.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
