A new study reports microbial DNA preserved inside woolly and steppe mammoth remains that are older than one million years. The team shows that some bacteria were living with these animals while they were alive, not just invading after death.



Researchers analyzed DNA from 483 specimens and sequenced 440 of them for the first time. From a steppe mammoth that lived about 1.1 million years ago, they even pieced together parts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-buried-for-millions-of-years-may-guide-search-for-alien-life/">bacterial</a> genomes that once infected or inhabited the animal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-microbes-in-mammoths">Ancient microbes in mammoths</h2>



The work was led by Benjamin Guinet, a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm (<a href="https://palaeogenetics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CPG</a>). The Centre is a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History (<a href="https://www.nrm.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NRM</a>).



"Our results push the study of microbial DNA back beyond a million years, opening up new possibilities to explore how host-associated microbes evolved in parallel with their hosts," said Guinet. 



The project involved an international team of experts working across multiple collections and labs.



The researchers used strict lab protocols, computational filters, and DNA damage checks to separate life stage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-found-alive-sealed-inside-rock-after-2-billion-years/">microbes</a> from postmortem contaminants. That approach helped them focus on organisms that were likely part of the mammoth’s own internal community.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-mammoth-dna">Inside mammoth DNA</h2>



The scientists kept finding the same six types of bacteria in mammoth remains from different times and places, including close relatives of Actinobacillus, Pasteurella, Streptococcus, and Erysipelothrix. 



This pattern suggests that these microbes had a long history with mammoths, sticking with them through environmental changes and population shifts.



The scientists distinguished host-associated microbes, meaning those living in or on a host while it was alive, from environmental bacteria that entered after burial. 



They used metagenomics, a method that reads all DNA in a sample at once, then identified ancient damage patterns to authenticate the oldest material.



From the 1.1 million year steppe mammoth, the team reconstructed partial genomes of Erysipelothrix that likely came from an infection during life. This is the oldest authenticated host-associated microbial DNA ever reported, and it extends the range for studying ancient host <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-aquificales-discovered-in-hot-springs-breathe-oxygen-and-sulfur-at-same-time/">microbe</a> interactions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ancient-microbes-matter">Why ancient microbes matter</h2>



This result builds on earlier work that recovered genome scale data from mammoth teeth more than one million years old, demonstrating that DNA can survive when conditions are right. 



The previous <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03224-9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">research</a> established methods and expectations for data quality at this extreme age.



Ancient DNA is fragile and breaks into tiny pieces, and chemical changes accumulate over time. By tracking these signatures, scientists can tell ancient sequences from modern contamination and avoid false signals.



"As microbes evolve fast, obtaining reliable DNA data across more than a million years was like following a trail that kept rewriting itself," said study senior author Tom van der Valk.



"Our findings show that ancient remains can preserve biological insights far beyond the host genome, offering us perspectives on how microbes influenced adaptation, disease, and extinction in Pleistocene ecosystems."



The Pleistocene was a period from about 2.6 million years ago to 11,700 years ago that included repeated ice ages.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-linked-to-mammoth-health">Microbes linked to mammoth health</h2>



One bacterium in the dataset is closely related to a Pasteurella species implicated in lethal outbreaks among African elephants. That connection is supported by a 2023 <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37880229/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> that identified a Pasteurella relative as the likely cause of fatal septicemia in elephants in Zimbabwe.



The new study reports several putative <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2646308/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">virulence factors</a>, which are gene features tied to disease-causing ability, in some clades. The authors are careful about cause and effect because ancient DNA is incomplete and infections leave mixed traces.



Erysipelothrix is also known to sicken Arctic wildlife today, including muskoxen during unusual mortality events. That pattern has been documented in a Canadian Veterinary <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4431149/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal</a> that found Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae associated with widespread deaths in the Canadian Arctic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mammoth-survival-and-microbes">Mammoth survival and microbes</h2>



Microbes that stayed with mammoths for hundreds of thousands of years hint at stable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathing-without-oxygen-how-ancient-microbes-powered-early-life/">relationships</a> shaped by diet, climate, and social behavior. The persistence of these lineages across far flung regions points to deep coevolution.



The last woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until about 4,000 years ago, long after mainland populations vanished. Genetic work on that relict group links their late survival to small population size and accumulating harmful mutations.



"This work opens a new chapter in understanding the biology of extinct species. Not only can we study the genomes of mammoths themselves, but we can now begin to explore the microbial communities that lived inside them," said Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary genomics at the CPG. 



Ultimately, the data help connect health, ecology, and extinction risks in a single picture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-this-research-can-go-next">Where this research can go next</h2>



Reconstructing ancient microbiomes can help set baselines for living elephant microbiomes. That matters because health, diet, and stress are all reflected in the microbiome, the community of microbes that live in and on an organism.



Ancient pathogen signals can also clarify whether outbreaks played a role in population declines. Learning which bacteria carried disease associated genes in the past could inform surveillance and treatment strategies for modern elephants.



Finally, the same tools can be applied to other Ice Age species to test whether long-lived microbial partners were the rule rather than the exception. Careful sampling, clean labs, and independent checks will keep new claims on firm ground.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/cell/abstract/S0092-8674(25)00917-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cell</a>.

The deepest-ever human ocean dive reveals that our garbage beat us there. Former naval officer Victor Vescovo has now descended deeper into the ocean than any other human. His record-setting solo submarine dive seven miles deep in the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/life-found-mariana-trench/">Mariana Trench</a> has produced three new marine species, along with some less exciting discoveries in the form of garbage. 

According to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a>, Vescovo was literally mapping uncharted new territory in the world’s deepest underwater trench when he noticed plastic trash. 

News outlets initially reported that he saw a candy wrapper and a plastic bag, but a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/">Reuters</a> report referred to the waste spotted by Vescovo as being “metal or plastic objects, one with writing on it.”

“I was disappointed to see human contamination in the deepest point in the ocean,” said Vescovo. “With over 7 billion people on the Earth, the oceans are going to be impacted negatively by mankind, but I hope we can at least minimize it in the future.” The deepest-ever human ocean dive reveals that our garbage beat us there

Vescovo told the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a> he spent around four hours on the floor of the Mariana Trench, and he was amazed by his surroundings. ‘There was definitely life at the very bottom of the ocean. It was not dead by any means... I felt very excited, privileged to get to see it, but also very much at peace because it really is a quiet, peaceful, place.”

Sea lampreys are a parasitic fish that could help scientists develop new treatments targeting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-tumor-severity-sex/">brain tumors</a>, brain trauma, and even dementia, according to a new study. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.wisc.edu/">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a> and the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas at Austin </a>found a way to turn sea lamprey molecules into drug delivery mechanisms that directly reach brain tumors, succeeding where many other cancer treatments fail. 

Sea lamprey immune systems, although similar to humans, produce small molecules called VLRS in place of antibodies. 

It was these VLRS molecules that the researchers used to deliver drug treatments to the brain. The team first vaccinated lampreys to find the VLRS that service the extracellular matrix of the brain. 

Having a way to target the brain specifically is key. Most medicines and drugs target individual cells, but the lamprey molecules target the outside of the cell after bypassing the blood-brain barrier. 

In healthy brains, the blood-brain barrier ensures that the brain and central nervous system are protected from toxins and pathogens. This defense mechanism is so effective that drugs and even the sea lamprey molecules cannot pass through the barrier to treat tumors in the brain. 

However, when the brain is damaged through stroke or cancer, the blood-brain barrier degrades and starts leaking near the tumor or disease site.

By taking advantage of the now permeable barrier, the researchers found a way to use the lamprey molecules to deliver a chemotherapy drug called doxorubicin to diseased cells in the brain. 

“This set of targeting molecules appears somewhat agnostic to the disease,” said Eric Shusta, a member of the research team. “We believe it could be applied as a platform technology across multiple conditions. Molecules like this normally couldn’t ferry cargo into the brain, but anywhere there’s a blood-brain barrier disruption, they can deliver drugs right to the site of pathology.”  

The researchers tested the molecule drug delivery system on mice that had glioblastoma, a fatal brain cancer, and the treatment led to longer lifespans. 

Sea lamprey molecules also ensure that only the diseased area is treated and healthy cells are unaffected. 

“I’m excited about trying this strategy in different disease model systems,” said John Kuo, a collaborator on the study. “There are several disease processes that disrupt the blood-brain barrier, and we could conceive of delivering a variety of different therapies with these molecules.”

The study detailing the sea lamprey molecules was published in the journal Science Advances.

According to researchers from <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/">University College London</a>, Neanderthals and modern humans diverged at least 800,000 years ago. 

This is much earlier than previous DNA-based evidence has suggested. The researchers were able to devise this new estimate based on dental evolutionary rates. Their findings are published in <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

The team focused in on dental evolutionary rates of early <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/ancient-neanderthal-settlement-patterns/">Neanderthals</a> and found that Neanderthal ancestors in Sima de los Huesos, Spain, whose remains, located in Spain’s Atapuerca Mountains, are dated to about 430,000 years ago, actually diverged from the modern human lineage much earlier than previously thought. 

"Any divergence time between Neanderthals and modern humans younger than 800,000 years ago would have entailed an unexpectedly fast dental evolution in the early Neanderthals from Sima de los Huesos,” said Dr. Aida Gomez-Robles, from the UCL Anthropology department.

"There are different factors that could potentially explain these results, including strong selection to change the teeth of these hominins or their isolation from other Neanderthals found in mainland Europe,” Dr. Gomez-Robles continued. “However, the simplest explanation is that the divergence between Neanderthals and modern humans was older than 800,000 years. This would make the evolutionary rates of the early Neanderthals from Sima de los Huesos roughly comparable to those found in other species."

It has been previously thought and debated that humans and Neanderthals diverged from our common ancestor around 300,000 to 500,000 years ago. But this timeline does not explain the genetic and anatomical similarities between Neanderthals and the hominins from Sima de los Huesos.

"Sima de los Huesos hominins are characterised by very small posterior teeth (premolars and molars) that show multiple similarities with classic Neanderthals,” Dr. Gomez-Robles explained. “It is likely that the small and Neanderthal-looking teeth of these hominins evolved from the larger and more primitive teeth present in the last common ancestor of Neanderthals and modern humans."

Because dental shape has evolved at similar rates across all species of hominin, the team was able to use quantitative data to estimate the time in history where the diversion between the Sima people and Neanderthals occurred, thus placing the diversion farther back in time.

"The Sima people's teeth are very different from those that we would expect to find in their last common ancestral species with modern humans, suggesting that they evolved separately over a long period of time to develop such stark differences."

This study could also prove that the modern human and Neanderthals shared their last common ancestor more than 800,000 years ago — almost 300,000 years earlier than previous estimates show.

Experts believe that screaming evolved as a way for animals to startle an attacking predator for a chance to escape or to recruit help when they find themselves in trouble. While screaming has been well-studied in animals, there has been a lack of research on the function of human screams or how they differ from those of other species. 

To investigate, a team of psychology students at <a href="http://www.emory.edu/home/index.html">Emory University</a> led by Professor Harold Gouzoules designed an experiment in which 181 volunteers were asked to distinguish screams from non-screams. The participants listened to 75 human vocal sounds that represented a broad acoustical range and a variety of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/horses-sense-human-emotions/">emotions</a>.

To pinpoint the features that make sounds more screamlike, the team analyzed the sounds based on 28 acoustic parameters that assess pitch, timbre, duration, frequency range, and roughness.

“Rough sounds are perceived as harsh, raspy, gravelly or buzzing. Some recent research has suggested that roughness might be a defining quality of screams, so one of our goals was to assess this idea,” said study co-author and graduate student Jay W. Schwartz.

The study revealed that the sounds most often classified as screams shared certain acoustic features, including a high, sweeping pitch and high roughness. A whistle was the main non-scream sound that the majority of participants perceived to be a scream. 

“This made sense though, when we looked into the acoustic qualities of the whistle,” said Schwartz. “It exhibited many of the traits we found to generally be associated with screams.”

According to Schwartz, the vocalizations people labeled as screams came from a surprisingly wide range of emotional contexts. 

“Some were fearful, while others were angry, surprised, or even excited. In almost all other species, screams are reserved for a particular situation, like an attack by a predator or rival.”

“In the future we plan to incorporate functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the neurological underpinnings of people's reactions to screams,” said Professor Gouzoules. “Screams are inherently interesting vocalizations but there are also potential human health applications of research on screams as there are multiple psychiatric disorders that involve screaming behavior.”

The research will be presented at the 177th Meeting of the <a href="https://acousticalsociety.org/">Acoustical Society of America</a>.

While not all satellites are used to observe and monitor Earth’s climate, surface temperature, and oceans, satellites are playing an increasingly important role in how researchers<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cutting-edge-satellites-methane/"> gauge climate change</a> and work to tackle global warming. 

This year’s conference is not only dedicated to the Earth’s environment and climate but also the many new opportunities that satellites create for businesses, development, sustainability, and enrichment. 

Some of the topics slated to be presented at the symposium include how satellite data can open the door to innovations in artificial intelligence, technology, engineering, and science. 

“From space you don’t see borders, and this is the same for us – the countries of Europe are working together for a coherent approach that includes common goals and a full integration of space to bring the biggest benefits to society,” said General Jan Worner, ESA director, during a welcome speech that kicked off the conference. 

In a first for the ESA’s conference, over 2,000 children are presenting their own programs and work showcasing the importance and value that the younger generation has when it comes to science, innovation, and our planet’s future. 

“We are looking forward to hearing the latest scientific results. And, with ESA’s next ministerial council, Space19+, in November, we will also be talking about how we will take Earth observation into the future, particularly through innovation and partnerships,” said Josef Aschbacher, the ESA Director of <a href="http://www.esa.int/esapub/br/br114/br114ear.htm">Earth Observation Programmes</a> during a speech. “But crucially we need the engagement of young people, the scientists of tomorrow.”

On the latest episode of HBO's “<a href="https://www.hbo.com/last-week-tonight-with-john-oliver">Last Week Tonight with John Oliver</a>,” Bill Nye the Science Guy abandoned his typical mild-mannered TV personality to deliver a profanity-fueled speech about the world's failure to address <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/humans-driving-climate-change/">climate change</a>.

Nye joined Oliver to drive home the urgency of  the challenges faced by the environment. Oliver showed his support for carbon pricing and the Green New Deal, a proposal introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“To its eternal credit, the Green New Deal has succeeded in getting people talking, but that won't mean anything unless that talk turns into action,” said Oliver. “We're going to need a lot of different policies working tandem, and we have to take action right now, but you don't have to just take that from me. Instead, I'm happy to say Bill Nye has actually agreed to drive the urgency home at this point by actually doing one of his enjoyable, light-hearted demonstrations.”

But what happened next was far from light-hearted. It was more like an all-out verbal assault by Bill Nye, complete with a demonstration in which he lit a wooden globe on fire with a blowtorch. 

“By the end of this century, if temperatures keep rising, the average temperature on earth could go up another 4 to 8 degrees. What I'm saying is, the planet's on f****ing fire,” said Nye. 

“There are several options to put out the proverbial fire on Earth. Are any of them free? No, of course not, you idiots. Grow the f*** up... I didn't mind explaining photosynthesis to you when you were 12, but you're adults now. This is an actual crisis, got it?”

In a separate segment, Nye discussed carbon pricing, which is an approach to mitigating harmful carbon dioxide emissions by charging a fee to emitters.

“When we release carbon, say, by burning coal or driving an SUV, all of us pay for that in the form of things like fires, floods and crop failures,” said Nye. “Putting a fee on carbon creates incentives to emit less carbon, and, more importantly, it also incentivizes the development of low-carbon technology, which is huge, because that's vital to reducing emissions globally.”

While the tactics used on the show to spread climate awareness were meant to be funny, the topic of carbon emissions has become more serious than ever this week. On Sunday, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography announced that atmospheric CO2 levels were measured at 415 parts per million, which is the highest CO2 concentration in the history of humans.

Bill Nye warns that ‘the planet’s on f***ing fire’ on Last Week Tonight

On the latest episode of HBO's “Last Week Tonight with...

For many scientists, naming a study animal, whether living or dead, is something of a faux pas.  Naming an animal can bias your view of it, making your observations less accurate. 

There are of course some exceptions to this rule.  Jane Goodall, the famous chimpanzee researcher, flew in the face of convention by <a href="http://news.janegoodall.org/2015/09/29/the-famous-chimps-of-gombe/">naming</a> the chimpanzees she observed at <a href="https://www.tanzaniatourism.go.tz/en/destination/gombe-national-park">Gombe National Park</a> in Tanzania. Naming animals can have positive benefits beyond scientific observations.  If your main goals are of conserving a wild animal, names can potentially garner the animal more sympathy and public support. Sometimes named animals get amazing amounts of fame, and it seems unlikely an animal known only by a random string of numbers and letters would gain as much notoriety.  

For the commercial paleontologists of Black Hills Institute of Geological Research (BHI), naming dinosaur skeletons had other purposes as well.  Many of the dinosaurs discovered by BHI have been named to honor someone, usually a person involved in the discovery of the fossil. 

The name of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/shark-species-discovered-sue-t-rex/">Sue</a>, the world’s largest and most complete known T. Rex fossil, is no different.  Sue Hendrickson had long been an explorer, first diving in Florida to collect fish aquarium specimens before becoming an expert on Dominican amber fossil insects.  Eventually, Sue helped in field work with whale fossils in Peru and then followed Pete Larson back to South Dakota to hunt dinosaur fossils. Often accompanied by dogs, as she was the one time I met her briefly on a Triceratops dig in South Dakota, Sue was walking her dog Gypsy when she made a discovery.  Sue had found a few dinosaur bones weathering out of a hillside. After weeks of work, the team at BHI excavated one of the most impressive individual fossils from the American west: SUE the T. Rex. 

The easy explanation for the gendering of SUE is that she was simply named for her discoverer, Sue Hendrickson.  The more complex issue is that as Pete Larson, head of BHI pointed out, there is some evidence that SUE could be a female.

Birds are a diverse group, and from hummingbirds to penguins, there are enormous differences.  In some groups females are larger, in others males are the biggest. In many birds, there is little discernible difference between male and female body sizes.  Often close observation of behavior is the only non-invasive way to find the gender of a bird. All birds are technically avian dinosaurs, the descendants of what we typically think of as dinosaurs – the non-avian dinosaurs.  

There are some birds that have kept more clearly ancestral traits than others.  Birds like emus, ostriches and cassowaries appear more like the ancestral dinosaurs.  

As Dr. Andrew L. Mack wrote in his book, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/20829893-searching-for-pekpek">Searching for Pekpek</a>, “although all birds are the living relatives of dinosaurs, when you look at a cassowary this ancestry is viscerally evident.”

These birds are tall, flightless, fast runners and violent kickers.  It’s possible that birds like these can give us some insight into extinct non-avian dinosaurs, including differences in size between males and females, but we must be careful.  

<a href="http://www.daintreecassowary.org.au/faq">Daintree Cassowaries</a>, a group that works in cassowary research and conservation and research in Australia, reports that there is a difference in size between male and female cassowaries.  Female cassowaries are larger than males. The <a href="https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/cassowary">San Diego Zoo</a> also reports that going against the general wisdom of most passerine birds visiting our yards, the cassowary female is also more brightly colored than males.  

Emus are the closest relatives to cassowaries, so unsurprisingly, they’re very similar to them in terms of sexual dimorphism.  Female emus tend to be larger than their male counterparts and also have brighter markings, according to the <a href="https://www.saczoo.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Emu.pdf">Sacramento Zoo</a>.  

Unfortunately, the pattern breaks with ostriches.  Ostriches are also very dinosaur-like, growing to be as tall as nine feet, ostriches have to contend with dangerous predators not found in Australia, where emus only have dingos.  The result of evolving in Africa is that the ostrich is fierce and dangerous, like you’d expect from a dinosaur. Male ostriches are also larger than females and have striking black and white plumage compared to the dull drown of females, according to <a href="https://www.theanimalfiles.com/birds/ostrich/ostrich.html">The Animal Files</a>.  

Sadly, other dinosaur-like birds such as the Elephant bird of Madagascar and the Moa of New Zealand which could be useful for comparison are extinct.    

All other birds, also the descendants of dinosaurs, don’t help much for evidence of size difference among the sexes.  In raptors such as eagles and hawks, females are indeed larger than males. In many song birds, the opposite is true. What determines the difference in size doesn’t seem to be arbitrary but actually an artifact of evolved lifestyle.  

An article from <a href="https://www.birdwatchingdaily.com/beginners/birding-faq/explaining-size-differences-between-male-and-female-birds/">Birdwatching</a> explains why some birds have a difference in size.  In many species, the males perform elaborate dances to attract females with their bright showy feathers and quick antics.  In these species, where one male might mate with several females, the males tend to be larger. In others, one female might mate with several males and she tends to be larger.  With raptors, the birds tend to pair off but it’s suspected females are larger than males to limit competition for the same prey between females and males. Egg laying may also play a role in size difference in raptors and some other birds. 

For SUE, the case is far from clear cut, although her life might have resembled something of a cross between that of a raptor and that of an ostrich or emu.  Given this lack of certainty, the <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org">Chicago Field Museum</a> decided recently to make SUE gender neutral.  Pete Larson of BHI still feels strongly that the T. Rex which defined his career is a female but BHI no longer owns the famous fossil.  

An article on LGBTQ community platform <a href="https://www.them.us/story/sue-the-t-rex-is-a-nonbinary-icon">them.</a> praised the change, that SUE is now gender neutral in a world they point out, where many things are arbitrarily assigned a gender.  SUE’s <a href="https://twitter.com/SUEtheTrex">Twitter</a> account now uses gender neutral pronouns as well. 

It’s certainly a good thing if the change makes a broader range of people engaged in science and discovery, but I still have to wonder if SUE was a female or not.  Did she perhaps lay eggs that hatched chicks from which sprung a long lineage of birds? It’s probable that science will never completely know for sure the true gender of SUE.

A new study led by the <a href="http://www.medpharmgene.ca/university-of-montreal-hospital-centre-crchum.html">University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre</a> (CRCHUM) has produced evidence that the brain plays a major role in maintaining a <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/obesity-rising-rural-areas/">healthy weight</a>, regardless of diet and exercise. 

In an investigation focused on mice, the researchers have demonstrated for the first time that the acyl-CoA-binding protein (ACBP) directly influences the neurons that control weight in rodents.

In 2015, study lead author Professor Thierry Alquier and colleagues had already evaluated the relationship between ACBP and cells that support neuronal functions called astrocytes. 

The earlier analysis revealed that ACBP allowed astrocytes to communicate variations in fatty acids and lipids in the blood to neurons. This information is what enables the brain to adjust food intake and energy expenditure, ultimately regulating weight. 

“With colleagues from the Université de Bordeaux's NutriNeuro laboratory, we now show that neurons that reduce food intake, known as proopiomelanocortin neurons or POMC neurons, are in 'close communication' with astrocytes that produce the protein ACBP in a specific area of the brain: the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus,” said Professor Alquier.

This area of the hypothalamus, which is essential for the control of feeding and metabolism, contains two populations of neurons with opposing functions when activated. One group results in an increase in food intake, while the second promotes a reduction of food intake and an increase in energy expenditure.

“Genetic mutations explain five to 10 per cent of obesity cases,’ said Professor Alquier. “Among these cases, a large proportion is related to a disruption of this neuronal pathway commonly known as the melanocortin pathway.” 

“We observed that the deletion of the ACBP gene in astrocytes of the arcuate nucleus promotes obesity. In mice that were genetically modified to be obese, we observed in the laboratory that injecting them daily with ACBP led to a reduction of food intake and weight loss in the order of 5 per cent over five days, a mechanism that relies on the activation of POMC neurons.”

The researchers acknowledged that this discovery cannot necessarily be translated to humans just yet, considering that the study was conducted on lab mice and remains at the basic research stage.

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.jci.org/">Journal of Clinical Investigation</a>.

Brain protein found to have a major influence on body weight

For years, ancient specimens trapped in amber have provided resin-covered snapshots of life on Earth millions of years ago. 

Most of the species and plants found encased in these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-amber-eggs-hatch/">amber time-capsules</a> are terrestrial, meaning they lived predominantly on land. This makes sense when you think about the wide array of ancient insects that have been described after being discovered in amber samples. 

An unlucky ancient mosquito that perched on a resin-producing tree could easily have found itself stuck and before long completely entombed in amber, only to be unearthed by researchers centuries later. 

Rarely do scientists find marine species or aquatic plants trapped in tree resin, but researchers from <a href="http://english.nigpas.cas.cn/">Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences</a> have discovered the first sea ammonite ever found in amber. 

The find was described in a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 

Trapped among mites, beetles, wasps, and spiders in a piece of 99-million-year-old amber found in northern Myanmar are several marine species including an ammonite, sea snails, and sea slaters. 

Ammonites are ancient marine mollusks closely related to modern nautilus and squids. 

The amber containing this mix of land and sea animals is 33 millimeters long, and 29 millimeters high. Over 40 individual animals were identified in the amber.

X-ray micro-computed tomography was used to create a high-resolution three-dimensional image of the ammonite. 

How exactly the snails and ammonite ended up in the amber represents a mystery. It’s possible that the ammonite and sea snails were located on a sandy beach near resin-producing trees. As the resin flowed down the tree to the ground, it collected all matter of land and beach organisms in its path. 

Regardless of how the ammonite ended up in the amber, the rare find is noteworthy and can help researchers better understand how ancient marine and terrestrial ecosystems interacted.

The <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/california-electric-cars/">electric cars</a> of the future are expected to be much quieter, reducing not only air pollution but also noise pollution. Experts are now evaluating both the benefits and the risks of quieter traffic.

Electric cars that do not produce much noise could be particularly dangerous for pedestrians who have limited vision or who are blind. As a result, the European Union will require any future electric or hybrid vehicles to include acoustic vehicle alerting systems (AVAS).

Klaus Genuit is the founder of HEAD acoustics GmbH, a company that provides sound and vibration analysis. He is investigating how vehicle alert signals can best be designed. Rene Weinandy, the head of Noise Abatement in Transport for the <a href="https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/en">German Environment Agency</a>, is evaluating whether AVAS should be used at all. 

While AVAS could improve vehicle safety, the systems are also likely to replace the traffic noise that electric cars would eliminate. The requirements for AVAS to contain different tones and frequencies could ultimately just sound like New York City at rush hour. This collective noise may drown out important signals and defeat the purpose of AVAS.

“An alert signal is only effective if it happens in very specific situations,” said Genuit. “All published results are showing only examples of one car with a warning signal. It was not considered what happens if several cars are producing warning signals.” 

Genuit said that this mixture of sounds could be distracting to drivers. Weinandy added that noise is not only annoying and distracting, but can also be an environment poison considering its ill effects on health.

“It is a synthetic, increasing sound that is supposed to be similar to an internal combustion engine vehicle startup,” said Weinandy. “The question is, what are the downsides this noise poses? Is it really a wise decision to increase the noticeability of electric vehicles in traffic by making them spray poison? Now regulations on the so-called AVAS for electric cars have been cast into laws both in the U.S. and Europe without scientific proof of their effectiveness and adequate consideration of their negative side effects. Neither have less harmful alternatives been systematically sought for and investigated.”

The German Environment Agency is currently working exploring alternatives to AVAS. 

“If we really use warning signals instead of more intelligent systems like car-to-pedestrian communication using smartphones, then we have to consider the following aspects: detectability, is it localizable, elimination of strong tones to avoid disharmony and roughness, and elimination of pitch shifting,” said Genuit. “A suitable signal should be developed based on a modulated broadband noise whereas the slope of the envelope gives the information about acceleration and speed.”

The research will be presented at the 177th Meeting of the <a href="https://acousticalsociety.org/">Acoustical Society of America</a>.

Future electric cars will ease noise pollution, but pose new safety risks

In 2010, the analysis of imagery from <a href="http://nasa.gov">NASA's</a> Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) revealed that the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/space-rock-moon-january-eclipse/">Moon</a> shriveled as its interior cooled, producing thousands of cliffs called thrust faults across the lunar surface. Researchers have now determined that the Moon may still be shrinking and activating moonquakes along these thrust faults. 

Professor Nicholas Schmerr of the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a> and a team of experts created a new algorithm to study seismic data that was collected in the 1960s and '70s. The analysis provided accurate epicenter location data for 28 moonquakes that were recorded from 1969 to 1977.

When the researchers superimposed this location data onto the LRO imagery of the thrust faults, they determined that at least eight of the quakes most likely resulted from true tectonic activity rather than from asteroid impacts or rumblings deep within the Moon's interior.

“We found that a number of the quakes recorded in the Apollo data happened very close to the faults seen in the LRO imagery,” said Professor Schmerr. “It's quite likely that the faults are still active today. You don't often get to see active tectonics anywhere but Earth, so it's very exciting to think these faults may still be producing moonquakes.”

Astronauts placed five seismometers on the Moon's surface during the Apollo missions, four of which recorded 28 shallow moonquakes. On Earth, these quakes would have ranged in magnitude from about 2 to 5.

The researchers also found that six of the quakes occurred when the Moon was at or near its apogee, which is its farthest point from Earth. At this point in the Moon’s orbit, additional tidal stress from Earth's gravity causes a peak in the total stress on the lunar crust.

“We think it's very likely that these eight quakes were produced by faults slipping as stress built up when the lunar crust was compressed by global contraction and tidal forces, indicating that the Apollo seismometers recorded the shrinking Moon and the Moon is still tectonically active,” explained study lead author Thomas Watters, who is a senior scientist at the <a href="https://www.si.edu/">Smithsonian Institution</a> in Washington.

“For me, these findings emphasize that we need to go back to the Moon,” said Professor Schmerr. “We learned a lot from the Apollo missions, but they really only scratched the surface. With a larger network of modern seismometers, we could make huge strides in our understanding of the Moon's geology. This provides some very promising low-hanging fruit for science on a future mission to the Moon.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ngeo">Nature Geoscience</a>.

The Moon is shrinking and producing ‘moonquakes’ along thousands of faults

A new way to improve the flavor of store-bought tomatoes. A new study from the <a href="https://www.ars.usda.gov/">Agricultural Research Service</a> (ARS) may have pinpointed a way to give store-bought tomatoes more flavor. The researchers identified genes that are critical for crop breeding and improvement. 

Cultivated <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/tomatoes-insect-resistant-genes/">tomatoes</a> have a wide range of physical and metabolic variation, but domestication and breeding have left today's tomatoes with a narrow genetic base. Molecular biologist James Giovannoni teamed up with bioinformatics scientist Zhangjun Fei to construct the pan-genome for hundreds of different cultivated and closely-related wild tomatoes. 

The study revealed almost 5,000 previously undocumented genes that were absent from the original reference genome.

“One of the most important discoveries from constructing this pan-genome is a rare form of a gene labeled TomLoxC, which mostly differs in the version of its DNA gene promoter,” said Giovannoni. “The gene influences fruit flavor by catalyzing the biosynthesis of a number of lipid (fat)-involved volatiles - compounds that evaporate easily and contribute to aroma.”

In addition, the researchers found that TomLoxC supports the production of a group of apocarotenoids that work as signaling molecules, affecting a variety of responses in plants including environmental stress. The compounds have a variety of floral and fruity elements that influence how tomatoes taste. 

The rare version of TomLoxC was found in only two percent of older cultivated large tomato varieties, yet was present in 91 percent of currant-sized wild tomatoes.

“It appears that there may have been strong selection pressure against or at least no selection for the presence of this version of TomLoxC early in the domestication of tomatoes,” said Giovannoni. “The increase in prevalence of this form in modern tomatoes likely reflects breeders' renewed interest in improved flavor.”

The findings could inform breeders on how to quickly increase the flavor of store-bought tomatoes while preserving their most important traits.

“These novel genes discovered from the tomato pan-genome added substantial information to the tomato genome repertoire and provide additional opportunities for tomato improvement,” said Fei. “The presence and absence profiles of these genes in different tomato populations have shed important lights on how human selection of desired traits have reshaped the tomato genomes.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ng/">Nature Genetics</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;
