Italy’s Campi Flegrei has been restless again when it comes to earthquakes, and a new AI approach is helping scientists see what the ground is really doing. 



In a peer-reviewed study, researchers from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>, along with colleagues at INGV Osservatorio Vesuviano and the <a href="https://www.international.unina.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Naples Federico II</a>, reanalyzed continuous seismic records. The team found more than four times as many small earthquakes between January 21, 2022, and March 20, 2025.



The researchers did not detect any direct sign of magma moving upward. Instead, they highlighted very shallow hybrid quakes tied to the hydrothermal system.



That fuller picture matters because small events reveal where the crust is stressed and how energy is moving through the volcanic field. With cleaner detections and sharper locations, scientists can track changes faster and judge when activity starts to cluster in risky ways.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clear-signals-urgent-stakes">Clear signals, urgent stakes</h2>



“Seismicity could change at any time, and that may be the most important thing about this study: this capability of getting a clear view is now operational,” said study co-author Greg Beroza, a geophysics professor at Stanford University.



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supervolcano-campi-flegrei-naples-italy-solfatara-crater-phlegraean-fields-signs-of-waking-up/">caldera</a> sits within the Neapolitan area, where more than half a million people live and work. That density means even modest shaking or ground movement can disrupt daily life, strain buildings, and complicate evacuations.



History shows why clarity is essential. During the 1982-1984 crisis, uplift and persistent earthquakes damaged structures across Pozzuoli. A major analysis documented that the events triggered the evacuation of about 40,000 people.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-turns-noise-into-earthquake-signals">AI turns noise into earthquake signals</h2>



The team trained a machine learning workflow on continuous waveforms and used it to scan years of data consistently. That created one catalog rather than a patchwork of methods, so patterns stand out instead of becoming blurred.



AI did more than count earthquakes. The workflow sharpened event locations and magnitudes, turning noisy curves into clean signals that line up with mapped features and known hot zones. 



That is the kind of precision emergency managers need when activity jumps in hours, not weeks. One payoff is a much clearer view of the caldera’s thin ring shaped structures and shallow faults. 



Those features organize the small quakes and help separate background rumble from changes that could matter for public safety.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volcano-under-quiet-strain">Volcano under quiet strain</h2>



Campi Flegrei is a large caldera, the broad depression left by past eruptions, ringed by faults and dotted with old vents and fuming ground. It is not a single cone, it is a field where different parts can wake up at different times.



The region breathes over years through uplift and subsidence known as bradyseism. Those slow vertical motions have been recorded for centuries and often line up with swarms of small earthquakes.



In the new catalog, most activity sits at very shallow depths and traces a narrow ring fault system consistent with surface features and the zone now rising. 



The authors reported no direct signature of magma rising toward the surface in this interval. This lowers near-term eruption concern but does not remove the need for close watching.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-faults-reveal-hidden-stress">Faults reveal hidden stress</h2>



Faults are breaks in rock that slip when stress overcomes strength, and their length and orientation constrain how big an earthquake could be. When small <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquakes-and-flood-zones-hidden-risks-in-the-pacific-northwest/">quakes</a> line up along a longer fault, planners can bound the upper size of plausible events rather than guess in the dark.



Seeing faults crisply also helps compare present unrest with past episodes. Shaking that migrates onto a new segment or clusters at the edge of the ring may signal a change in how the system stores and releases pressure.



Those signals are not predictions by themselves. They are inputs to models that weigh where stress is building, how close rocks are to failure, and what level of shaking the built environment can handle.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-refines-risk-planning">AI refines risk planning</h2>



Near real-time detections let observatories update maps of active zones as conditions evolve. That supports decisions like where to inspect bridges, how to stage ambulances, or when to test public alerts before a busy weekend.



Sharper locations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/">magnitudes</a> also help engineers validate expected shaking levels against what instruments record in town. With that feedback loop, officials can refine microzonation, revisit building priorities, and tune maintenance schedules before the next swarm.



Past experience is a warning here. During 1982-1984, the harbor shallowed and commerce paused, schools closed, and the government approved new housing to relocate residents. 



Planning for unrest is not only about eruptions, it is about everyday disruptions that stack up when the ground keeps moving.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-helps-not-predicts">AI helps, not predicts</h2>



The present results point to pressure within a shallow system, not direct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magma-layer-keeps-the-yellowstone-supervolcano-dormant/">magma</a> rise, during 2022-2025. That aligns with other independent work that has argued for pressure buildup and evolving stress in the crust during long stretches without eruption.



Unrest can still change quickly. More small quakes could organize into tighter clusters, or uplift rates could shift, and those changes would be visible fast with the new tools.



AI does not replace dense earthquake monitoring or local expertise. It helps analysts keep up when data surge, flag subtle changes that a human might miss after a long night, and focus attention on the signals that matter most.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adw9038" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a>.

A new and exciting dinosaur discovery was just made in Britain; 140-million-year old dinosaur footprints uncovered in a stone quarry. These 30 footprints – measuring almost three feet in diameter each – were uncovered by workmen in the Purbeck quarry in Swanage on Britain’s aptly-named Jurassic coast.

Interestingly, 52 similar footprints were discovered over 20 years ago just a few hundred yards away from the new prints. Scientists believe both sets of prints were made by the same herd of gigantic Sauropods, which was the largest animal to ever walk the Earth.

Sauropods could live up to 120 years, and were the first successful group of herbivorous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/teeth-fossils-dinosaurs-ate/">dinosaurs</a>. They are known for their long necks and tails, and dominated most terrestrial ecosystems for over 140 million years – from the Late Triassic to the Late Cretaceous. These animals weighed as much as 80 tons, which is 14 times the weight of an African elephant.

Lewis Quarries in Langton Matravers was shut down for 10 days while paleontologists extracted the footprints.

“The footprints are like giant saucer-shaped depressions which are up to three foot in diameter but only half an inch deep,” says Professor Michael Bennett of <a href="https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/">Bournemouth University</a>, who oversaw the extraction of the prints. “They belonged to the Sauropods which were very large dinosaurs the size of double decker buses and very gregarious, travelling in groups. The challenge for us was to extract the footprints without damaging them and now that has been achieved the intention is to put them on display at a museum, possibly the Etches collection in Kimmeridge.”

The dinosaur tracks have been captured in three-dimensions so the footprints can be digitally analyzed and possibly even printed in the future. So it’s likely that roughly 140 million years after these footprints were first created by dinosaurs, they will be created again – but this time by a 3D printer.

Giant dinosaur footprints discovered in Britain stone quarry

A new and exciting dinosaur discovery was just made in...

A new study using locusts could help provide insight into sensory experiences and how the brain processes smells and recognizes them later on. 

Tackling sensory experience with science is not new, but previous studies do not account for the variability that we experience in our everyday lives.

For example, we know what a rose <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-that-people-can-be-blind-to-smells-when-distracted/">smells like</a> in a rose garden, on its own, in a flower shop and on a busy street. Simply studying a person’s neural activity while smelling a single rose doesn’t explain how we can recognize the scent of a rose amidst other sensory distractions. 

To better understand this, researchers from the <a href="https://engineering.wustl.edu/">School of Engineering &amp; Applied Science and Washington University</a> in St. Louis conducted a study that examined how locusts responded to sensory input in a dynamic environment with other scents. 

The results were published in the journal Nature Communications. 

First, the researchers had to condition locusts to respond to a certain scent and they did this using the popular Pavlov's dog model. The locusts were exposed to a puff of hexanol followed by grass to eat. 

Eventually, the locusts learned to associate the scent with eating. When they smelled hexanol the locusts would open up their palps, organs outside of their mouths that functions like lips because they knew that they would soon get to eat grass. 

After the locusts were trained, the researchers performed a series of tests where the locusts were exposed to the hexanol either on its own or after a “distractor” scent. 

When the locusts were exposed to the hexanol on its own, the researchers saw no change in the locusts’ neural activity. However, when the locusts smelled a distractor smell first, different combinations of neurons fired off after smelling the hexanol. 

This explains the variability of sensory experience based on what’s happening in the current environment, but this also doesn’t realistically mirror how we experience smells on a day to day basis. 

The researchers compared variability to smelling a chocolate chip cookie at a coffee shop and a tea shop.

If we were to process sensory input based on context alone, then the coffee shop cookie and tea shop cookie would have two very different smells, even though they are the same food with the same ingredients. 

The locusts were able to recognize the hexanol in a range of settings which suggests that there is more than variability and context to sensory experience. 

The researchers discovered through further analysis that the locusts used something called the “An OR-of-ANDs” logical operation to recognize the hexanol.  

The “An OR-of-ANDs” logical operation explains how we can generalize and classify things based on certain traits and features.

There were some similarities in the locusts’ brain activity when smelling the hexanol on its own and when presented with a distractor scent first which shows that there are certain fixed patterns in regards to different sensory input even amongst other distractions.

The researchers next hope to test their findings with locusts and sensory experience on fruit flies to see if brain activity across the different insect species is the same.

It’s common knowledge that darker colors attract more sunlight. It’s why athletes wear eye black under their eyes and why purchasing a car with dark leather seats in Arizona is always a bad idea. So it’s clear that we humans are aware of this connection, but a new study published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a> has found that microorganisms may be as well. 

A study from scientists at <a href="https://www.jhsph.edu/">Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health</a> has found that microorganisms in colder climates darken themselves to capture more heat from the sun and enhance their ability to survive. 

Researchers examined yeasts collected from different latitudes, and discovered that dark-pigmented ones were frequently found away from the tropics. They determined that dark-pigmented microbes also maintained higher temperatures under a given amount of light, and had a significant growth advantage in cold conditions when compared to unpigmented microbes.

Because many pigmented fungi, bacteria, and other microbes exist at cold latitudes, it’s possible that this passive solar heating ability they’ve developed has an impact on climate. In some polar regions, microbes noticeably darken the terrain. Furthermore, there is evidence that colonies of microorganisms bloom in the meltwater of melting glaciers. 

“Our results suggest that pigmentation is an ancient adaptation mechanism for obtaining heat from solar radiation and could be an important variable in modeling climate change," says senior author Dr. Arturo Casadevall, a professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Through studying 20 differently pigmented variants of the yeasts Candida and Cryptococcus neoformans, Casadevall and his team found that darker variants heated up faster and reached higher temperatures under ordinary sunlight, as well as infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Additional experiments showed that this heat-capture strategy might provide an advantage in polar climates, enhancing a microbe’s chance of survival. 

The research team’s findings contribute helpful information in the study of microbial ecology, especially related to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-fungal-diseases/">climate change</a>. Their results could potentially help scientists predict the survivability of microorganisms at certain latitudes as the climate warms. 

“As these dark microbes grow, they may set up a positive reinforcing loop in which the area where they grow becomes warmer, speeding the glacial melt so that more dark microbes grow, and they warm things up further, and so on.” Knowing this, scientists will likely keep a close eye on microorganism growth – particularly in the polar regions.

The question of whether or not we are alone in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/life-possible-other-universes/">universe</a> has been the subject of much quandary and debate ever since we first discovered we were a part of a universe outside our own life-giving rock. 

With an estimated 700 million trillion terrestrial planets in the observable universe, it’s hard to imagine that there isn’t at least something out there that resembles life on Earth. This notion is being constantly supported by the discovery of new “habitable” planets, with similar characteristics to our own. Most recently, scientists have identified a group of planets outside our solar system with chemical conditions similar to those that may have led to life on Earth.

In a study published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>, researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> and the <a href="https://www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/">Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology</a> (MRC LMB) propose that stars which give off enough ultraviolet (UV) light may be able to help life begin on their own orbiting planets in a similar fashion to how it developed on Earth. This is because light is the catalyst to a series of chemical reactions that produce the building blocks of life.

The researchers determined a range of planets that are within the habitable range that liquid water is able to remain on the planet’s surface, and that the UV light from the host star is sufficient to allow the necessary chemical reactions to take place. “This work allows us to narrow down the best places to search for life,” says Dr. Paul Rimmer, a postdoctoral researcher with a joint affiliation at Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory and the MRC LMB, and the paper’s first author. “It brings us just a little bit closer to addressing the question of whether we are alone in the universe.”

By performing a series of chemical experiments in dark versus light conditions, the researchers were able to determine that stars around the same temperature as our sun gave off enough UV light for the chemical elements of life to form on the planets’ surfaces.

The known exoplanets that exist in the habitable area – what researchers have called the abiogenesis zone – are multiple planets detected by the Kepler telescope, including Kepler 452b, a planet that was nicknamed Earth’s “cousin.” The hope is that the next generation of telescopes will be able to identify and even characterize many more planets that are within the abiogenesis zone.

There is also the possibility that life on other planets could develop in a completely different way than it did on Earth. 

“I’m not sure how contingent life is, but given that we only have one example so far, it makes sense to look for places that are most like us,” says Rimmer. “There’s an important distinction between what is necessary and what is sufficient. The building blocks are necessary, but they may not be sufficient: it’s possible you could mix them for billions of years and nothing happens. But you want to at least look at the places where the necessary things exist.”

Of the 700 million trillion terrestrial planets – which at this point is likely a conservative estimate as we expand our knowledge of the universe – there are still many left to explore. 

“Getting some idea of what fraction have been, or might be, primed for life fascinates me,” says John Sutherland a professor at the University of Cambridge and co-author on the paper. “Of course, being primed for life is not everything and we still don’t know how likely the origin of life is, even given favorable circumstances – if it’s really unlikely then we might be alone, but if not, we may have company.”

New exoplanets show potential for life

Depression screenings typically involve a lengthy conversation with a doctor or health professional and usually include some sort of physical exam and questionnaire about mood, thoughts, feelings, and behavior. 

Doctors will then cross-reference symptoms and behavior with the criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders to better understand the severity and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/risk-factors-anxiety-inherited/">type of depression</a>, as the condition can take many forms including seasonal affective disorder and postpartum depression. 

But now, depression may soon be diagnosed with a simple blood test, as a new study published in the journal PNAS found potential biomarkers that could indicate depression in the brain. 

A collaboration of U.S researchers from several universities examined the link between depression and low levels of the molecule acetyl-L-carnitine (LAC) in the blood. 

The researchers had previously discovered through past trials with mice that low levels of LAC are associated with mood disorders. 

According to <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/">Newsweek</a> which reported on the findings, LAC has many important functions in the brain and helps with regulating metabolism and driving gene expression. 

To see if there was any link between LAC levels and depression in people, the researchers collected blood samples from 116 participants, 71 of whom had depression. 

LAC levels were much lower in the participants with depression and what's more, the lower levels were more prominent amongst those patients with a history of treatment-resistant depression and those who had suffered trauma during their childhood. 

The research suggests that someday LAC levels in a blood test may serve as a biomarker for diagnosing depression and aid in physicians working to treat their patients. 

“It is likely that other biomarkers will be needed to further identify, or narrow down, to create a more specific depression subtype,” Bruce McEwen, an author of the study, told Newsweek. “That is, a combination of biomarkers may be needed rather than one alone. Hopefully, within the next year or two there will be additional information that may lead to a test.”

The agency added that the red plant won’t be this close to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-temperature-has-been-steadily-rising-since-the-1850s/">Earth</a> again until September 2035. The best view of Mars will be visible from the Southern Hemisphere as it sits at a relatively short distance of 35.8 million miles away. Mars will look 3 times larger in the sky tonight

The record for the closest Mars ever got to Earth was set in 2003, when the red planet was only 34.6 million miles away.

This past month has featured a astrological occurrence known as “perihelic opposition,” where Mars, Earth, and the sun all align. According to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a>, this alignment happens every two years or so.

The pyramids of Egypt continue to capture the world’s attention as archaeologists and researchers work to unravel their many mysteries. 

Researchers from <a href="http://en.ifmo.ru/">ITMO University</a> in Saint Petersburg recently discovered that the Great Pyramid of Giza can channel electromagnetic energy and funnel it down to its internal chambers. 

The pyramid is designed in such a way that energy is pulled through the structure and accumulates high pockets of energy below the base of the pyramid. 

According to the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-6008131/Great-Pyramid-Giza-focus-electromagnetic-energy-hidden-chambers.html">Daily Mail</a>, the study has implications for nanoparticle design and could be used to create highly efficient sensors and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-solar-panels-appealing/">solar cells.</a>

The results of the study were published in the Journal of Applied Physics.  

“Egyptian pyramids have always attracted great attention,” Andrey Evlyukhin, the coordinator of the research, said in a statement. “We as scientists were interested in them as well, so we decided to look at the Great Pyramid as a particle dissipating radio waves resonantly.”

The researchers created a model of the Great Pyramid of Giza to see how electromagnetic radiation such as gamma rays, visible light, and ultraviolet light reacted to the pyramid and if the energy waves were absorbed by the structure. 

There were limitations in creating the model because the researchers had to make assumptions for the some of the unknown variables in the pyramid’s design and build. 

The model was then exposed to wave energy lengths of 656 to 1,968 feet because the team’s calculations showed that these wavelengths would resonate within the pyramid. 

Multipole analysis was used to show how the Great Pyramid of Giza channeled the electromagnetic energy. 

The results showed that in the case of the Great Pyramid, if a structure sits atop a substrate that allows for energy to move through it, the pyramid can focus energy through those empty spaces which create high pockets of energy below its base. 

If the researchers could replicate this on a nanoscale, it would have immense applications for creating solar cells. 

“Choosing a material with suitable electromagnetic properties, we can obtain pyramidal nanoparticles with a promise for practical application in nanosensors and effective solar cells,” Polina Kapitainova, an author of the study, said in a <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/ancient-egypt-incredible-electromagnetic-discovery-great-pyramid-gizas-hidden-1049578">statement</a>.

Great Pyramid of Giza can focus electromagnetic energy

Personality is all in the eyes – at least, if you’re an artificial intelligence programmed to study humans’ eye movements for clues to their character.

A team of scientists from the <a href="https://www.unisa.edu.au/">University of South Australia</a>, <a href="https://www.mpi-inf.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Informatics</a>, <a href="https://www.uni-stuttgart.de/en/">University of Stuttgart</a> and <a href="https://www.flinders.edu.au/">Flinders University</a> have teamed up to create a set of machine-learning algorithms that allow artificial intelligence to determine people’s personality traits. In the process, they’ve also shown that those traits are linked to eye movement.

"People are always looking for improved, personalised services. However, today's robots and computers are not socially aware, so they cannot adapt to non-verbal cues,” Dr. Tobias Loetscher of the University of South Australia said in a press release.  "This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals."

The study worked with 42 participants who allowed their eye movements to be tracked as they went around their day-to-day tasks on the universities’ campuses. 

At the end of the study, they filled out long-tested psychological questionnaires that assessed their personality traits. This allowed the researchers to compare their actual personality traits with the estimates made by the computer.

They found that the software was reliably accurate on predicting four major traits: neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness and extroversion. It also picked up on traits like curiosity and sociability based on eye movements.

"This research has tracked and measured the visual behaviour of people going about their everyday tasks, providing more natural responses than if they were in a lab,” Loetscher said. "And thanks to our machine-learning approach, we not only validate the role of personality in explaining eye movement in everyday life, but also reveal new eye movement characteristics as predictors of personality traits."

AI uses eye movements to detect personality traits

Northern Europe has been in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heatwave that looks to linger for weeks. Sweden is seeing its hottest summer in a century. Scotland recorded its highest temperature ever in Motherwell, and records were shattered in Belfast in Northern Ireland as well.

Now, weather data indicates that climate change may have played a role in creating it.

“The summer of 2018 has been remarkable in northern Europe. A very persistent high-pressure anomaly over Scandinavia caused high temperature anomalies and drought there from May to (at least) July,” researchers from the <a href="http://wwa.climatecentral.org/">World Weather Attribution</a> consortium wrote on their website. “These reached  as far southwest as Ireland. Southern Europe was unusually wet, with damaging thunderstorms in France in the first half of June.”

The team of scientists looked at climate data collected from seven sites in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands. The sites were chosen because they record weather information in real-time, and have digitized records going back several decades.

The researchers then analyzed the current and historic data to look at trends.

“We firstly analyze observed temperatures and estimate how rare the current heatwave is, measured as three-day maximum temperatures, and whether or not there is a trend toward increasing temperature,” they wrote.

They found that man-made climate change has raised the chances of northern Europe seeing a record-breaking heatwave, and this summer’s heat seems to be an example.

“We estimate that the probability to have such a heat or higher is generally more than two times higher today than if human activities had not altered climate,” <a href="https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/analyses/attribution-of-the-2018-heat-in-northern-europe/">the researchers wrote</a>.

The team did note that this was only a preliminary study. Additional research to verify their conclusions and more climate modeling would be needed before they can extend their findings to other extreme heat events, such as a record-breaking heatwave in Japan that has killed dozens or record high temperatures in the Arctic.

But the findings do add to a growing body of work suggesting that climate change is real, and that human activity may play a role in it.

“The logic that climate change will do this is inescapable – the world is becoming warmer and so heatwaves like this are becoming more common,” Dr. Friederike Otto of the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a>, a co-author of the study, told the <a href="http://dailymail.co.uk/">Daily Mail</a>. “What was once regarded as unusually warm weather will become commonplace – in some cases, it already has.”

Two Pleistocene nematodes (roundworms) found frozen in the ice recently woke up from an over 30-40,000 year-long nap, thanks to scientists that coaxed the prehistoric worms backed to life. 

The worms were found frozen in Yakutia, the coldest region in Russia according to the <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5995189/Worms-laid-dormant-42-000-years-sprung-life-Siberian-permafrost-melts.html">Daily Mail</a>, which reported on the remarkable story. 

The results of the roundworm experiment have potential implications for the future of cryonics and astrobiology. Cryonics aims to be able to freeze people for long periods of time keeping their bodies and cognitive faculties intact which could be useful for future space travel. 

We have a long way to go before science makes cryonics a viable reality, and while today you can choose to have your dead body <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/nov/18/the-cryonics-dilemma-will-deep-frozen-bodies-be-fit-for-new-life">cryopreserved</a>, successful reanimation may never be possible. 

This study though does show that multicellular organisms can survive in extreme environments for thousands of years. 

Researchers from the <a href="http://www.istc.int/en/institute/8700">Institute of Physico-Chemical and Biological Problems of Soil Science</a> in Moscow worked with geoscientists from <a href="https://www.princeton.edu/">Princeton University</a> in New Jersey to analyze 300 frozen worms to see if any could feasibly be brought back to life. 

Only two of the 300 worms examined were chosen for continued experimentations. 

One of the nematodes, dated around 41,700 years old, was found in permafrost near the Alazeya river in Yakutia. 

The worms were discovered near the site of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-ice-age-siberia/">Pleistocene Park</a>, a jurassic park like project meant to guard against climate change.

The second worm was discovered in a prehistoric squirrel burrow in Duvanny Yar outcrop in the lower reaches of the Kolyma River in 2002 and dates back 32,000 years. 

After the two worms were selected for defrosting, the researchers in Moscow reported signs of life including moving and eating, according to the <a href="https://siberiantimes.com/science/casestudy/news/worms-frozen-in-permafrost-for-up-to-42000-years-come-back-to-life/">Siberian Times</a>. 

“It is obvious that this ability suggests that the Pleistocene nematodes have some adaptive mechanisms that may be of scientific and practical importance for the related fields of science, such as cryomedicine, cryobiology, and astrobiology,” the researchers wrote in a report of their research efforts, which was published in journal Doklady Biological Sciences.

Worms frozen for thousands of years brought back to life

Epithelial cells are the foundation of tissues which band into three-dimensional shapes during embryonic development, ultimately giving rise to organs such as the outer layer of skin. It has been previously assumed that epithelial cells form into column-like or bottle-like shapes as they pack tightly together to accommodate the transformation of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/embryo-structures-fetal-development/">embryo</a>.

But now, an international research team led by <a href="https://www1.lehigh.edu/">Lehigh University</a> has found that epithelial cells take on a specific geometric shape during tissue bending that was previously unknown. The shape is very efficient, enabling the cells to maximize packing stability while minimizing energy use.

“We have unlocked nature's solution to achieving efficient epithelial bending,” said study lead author Javier Buceta.


The research team first made the discovery while modeling with a tool known as Voronoi diagramming, which is used in a number of fields to understand geometrical organization.

“During the modeling process, the results we saw were weird,” said Buceta. “Our model predicted that as the curvature of the tissue increases, columns and bottle-shapes were not the only shapes that cells may developed. To our surprise the additional shape didn't even have a name in math! One does not normally have the opportunity to name a new shape.”

To confirm this finding, the team analyzed the three-dimensional packing of various tissues found in animals. The data showed that epithelial cells did, in fact, form three-dimensional shapes similar to the ones predicted by the computational model.

The results of this research could help experts understand the three-dimensional organization of epithelial organs and may ultimately lead to advancements in tissue engineering.

“In addition to this fundamental aspect of morphogenesis, the ability to engineer tissues and organs in the future critically relies on the ability to understand, and then control, the 3D organization of cells,” wrote the study authors.

“For example, if you are looking to grow artificial organs, this discovery could help you build a scaffold to encourage this kind of cell packing, accurately mimicking nature's way to efficiently develop tissues,” said Buceta.

The new geometric shape identified in the study has been named “scutoid” because it resembles the posterior part of an insect thorax or midsection known as a scutellum.

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms">Nature Communications</a>.

Massive amounts of polyethylene (PE) mulch films are used by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/paying-farmers-conservation-land/">farmers</a> all over the world to combat weeds and to adjust the temperature and moisture of the soil to maximize crop yields. PE, however, is not biodegradable and accumulates in the soil over time, decreasing soil fertility and interfering with water transport.

A new study led by researchers at <a href="https://www.ethz.ch/en.html">ETH Zurich</a> have demonstrated that soil microbes can effectively break down mulch films composed of the alternative polymer poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), or PBAT. The experts found that soil microorganisms metabolically utilized the carbon in PBAT for energy production and to build up microbial biomass.

“This research directly demonstrates, for the first time, that soil microorganisms mineralise PBAT films in soils and transfer carbon from the polymer into their biomass," said study co-author Michael Sander.

PBAT is a petroleum-based polymer that can be used as a substitute for PE in producing mulch films. Since PBAT is known to be biodegradable in compost, the researchers set out to determine whether the polymer is also biodegradable in agricultural soils. 

The study revealed that the soil microorganisms released carbon-13 from the polymer as the PBAT degraded. Using isotope-sensitive analytical equipment, the researchers found that the carbon-13 from PBAT was not only converted into carbon dioxide (CO2) as a result of microbial respiration, but was also incorporated into biomass at the surface of the polymer.

“The beauty of our study is that we used stable isotopes to precisely track PBAT-derived carbon along different biodegradation pathways of the polymer in the soil," said study co-author Michael Zumstein.

The study authors emphasized that biodegradable plastics are distinctively different from plastics that just break up into tiny fragments and persist in the environment as microplastics.

“By definition biodegradation demands that microbes metabolically use all carbon in the polymer chains for energy production and biomass formation - as we now demonstrated for PBAT,” explained study co-author Hans-Peter Kohler.

The research team is the first to successfully demonstrate that a plastic material is effectively biodegrade in soils.

“We've developed analysis techniques that open the door for industry to test the environmental impact of their plastic products,” said co-author Kristopher McNeill. “Thanks to our method, they can switch to using biodegradable materials in the production of thin mulch films instead of non-degradable PE.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-contrasting-climate-response">A contrasting climate response</h2>



Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
