<p>A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.</p>



<p>The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.</p>



<p>“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. </p>



<p>“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”</p>



<p>The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. </p>



<p>After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



<p>Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.</p>



<p>Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.</p>



<p>Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.</p>



<p>These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.</p>



<p>Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. </p>



<p>That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



<p>On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. </p>



<p>Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.</p>



<p>The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.</p>



<p>None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



<p>A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. </p>



<p>NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.</p>



<p>The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.</p>



<p>The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.</p>



<p>Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



<p>The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.</p>



<p>Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.</p>



<p>The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.</p>



<p>Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



<p>“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. </p>



<p>Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



<p>If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. </p>



<p>That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.</p>



<p>If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.</p>



<p>Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.</p>



<p>The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



<p>The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. </p>



<p>They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.</p>



<p>Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.</p>



<p>PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.</p>



<p>As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.</p>

<p>You’ve likely heard of the Great Wall of China, that stone and brick marvel of fortifications that stretches vast distances across the historical border of northern China. But have you heard of the Great Green Wall of China?</p>



<p>Unlike its ancient counterpart, this is a living, breathing wall of greenery -- a massive tree-planting initiative aimed at combating desertification on the edge of the Gobi Desert.</p>



<p>Recently, the Great Green Wall reached a pivotal milestone, marking over four decades of relentless effort to transform arid landscapes into thriving ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-great-green-wall-encircles-the-desert">Great Green Wall encircles the desert</h2>



<p>Late last year, dedicated workers in the northwest autonomous region of Xinjiang triumphantly finished a roughly 2,000-mile "green belt" that encircles the infamous Taklimakan Desert.</p>



<p>Often referred to as the "Sea of Death," the Taklimakan is the nation's largest desert, and this initiative is a component of the bigger Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program -- also known as the Great Green Wall of China.</p>



<p>Since its inception in 1978, this effort symbolizes one of the globe's most comprehensive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planting-trees-is-important-but-reforestation-can-help-too/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planting</a> missions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-taklimakan-desert-the-basics">Understanding the Taklimakan Desert -- the basics</h2>



<p>The Taklimakan Desert sits in the Tarim Basin in northwest China, and it’s often called one of the largest shifting-sand deserts in the world. This place is enormous, covering over 130,000 square miles. </p>



<p>Most of its surface is made up of constantly moving sand dunes, which can sometimes reach heights of several hundred feet. </p>



<p>The region gets very little rain, so it’s incredibly dry, but it can still experience temperature swings with scorching summers and chilly winters.</p>



<p>You’ll find a handful of oases around the desert’s edges. These oases historically served as crucial pit stops for traders passing through on the ancient Silk Road. Because the desert’s interior is so harsh, people stuck to the perimeter. </p>



<p>As a result, communities sprang up where water was more accessible and trade routes were established. Those settlements often became hubs of cultural exchange, bringing in traders from distant lands.</p>



<p>Wind plays a big role in shaping the Taklimakan’s sand dunes. Strong gusts blow the sand from one place to another, which means the dunes are constantly rearranging themselves. </p>



<p>On top of that, the overall dryness makes it tough for vegetation to grow, so there isn’t much stopping the sand’s movement... until the Great Green Wall was built.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-china-s-great-green-wall-expansion">China's Great Green Wall expansion</h2>



<p>China's verdant endeavor is on track to span 13 provinces, covering a whopping 1.5 million square miles (3.9 million square kilometers) and a hefty 42% of the country's land area by mid-century, according to government resources.</p>



<p>The program's aspirations include protecting China from the northern sandstorms and halting the encroachment of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/floods-are-becoming-more-deadly-in-the-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deserts</a> such as the one in Xinjiang.</p>



<p>Upon completion of the Taklimakan section, an impressive 116,000 square miles (300,000 square kilometers) of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-struggling-to-breathe-store-co2-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trees</a> had been planted, significantly boosting China's forest coverage from a mere 10% in 1949 to an expected 25% by 2023. Particularly in Xinjiang, forest coverage has leaped from 1% to 5% in 40 years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-improving-economic-stability">Improving economic stability </h2>



<p>Distinct from the similarly ambitious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/africas-great-green-wall-is-economically-worthwhile/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Green Wall in Africa</a>, China's program has already gained considerable success, with government sources stating that it is "improving ecological stability and supporting the local communities."</p>



<p>Farmers in the dry northern regions have reaped visible benefits. Wang Yinji, a farmer in the northwest Gansu province, has seen significant improvements since 1999 when the tree-planting efforts escalated.</p>



<p>"Our corn grew taller. The sand that used to blow in from the east and northeast was stopped," said Wang.</p>



<p>Through the years, the campaign has skilfully rallied workers and volunteers. The project has also explored the plant species best suited to desert conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-of-the-great-green-wall">Challenges of the Great Green Wall</h2>



<p>However, the initiative isn't without its critics. Some have argued that the program hasn't curtailed sandstorms in Beijing, and others have scrutinized the low survival rates of the planted trees.</p>



<p>Critics have also argued that the planted trees compete with agricultural activities for the use of water and land. Yet, many believe in the value of tree-planting amidst increasing global warming and erratic weather patterns.</p>



<p>"The completion of the Taklimakan Desert control project is not an end to desert control but a new beginning," said Jiang Donghui, an official in Xinjiang. "We will continue to expand the green belt … to ensure sustainable development through desert control."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-blueprint-for-global-reforestation-efforts">A blueprint for global reforestation efforts</h2>



<p>The success and challenges of the Great Green Wall of China offer valuable insights for other nations grappling with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oases-grow-by-human-effort-but-face-threats-from-desertification/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">desertification</a>. </p>



<p>Similar initiatives, such as Africa’s Great Green Wall project, have drawn inspiration from China's approach, emphasizing the importance of tailored strategies for local ecosystems.</p>



<p>China’s program demonstrates the significance of combining scientific research with community involvement to achieve long-term environmental sustainability. </p>



<p>The use of drought-resistant tree species, soil stabilization techniques, and advanced irrigation systems have been key to transforming barren landscapes into fertile ecosystems.</p>



<p>As global climate change continues to exacerbate desertification and land degradation, the Great Green Wall serves as a reminder of the transformative power of reforestation - when backed by innovation, collaboration, and persistence.</p>

China’s Great Green Wall has reached a new milestone

You’ve likely heard of the Great Wall of China, that...

<p>To a leaf, the impact of a raindrop is equivalent to a person being struck by a falling bowling ball. Despite this seemingly catastrophic force, leaves endure, and new research offers insights into the physics that make this possible.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These findings, detailed in a recent study published in the journal <a href="https://journals.aps.org/prfluids/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.123605" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Physical Review Fluids</em></a>, could have applications in agriculture, environmental science, and renewable energy technologies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamics-of-raindrops-and-plant-leaves">Dynamics of raindrops and plant leaves</h2>



<p>The study, titled “Resonance and Damping in Drop-Cantilever Interactions,” used high-speed photography to closely examine what happens when a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-turbulence-clouds-makes-tiny-water-droplets-turn-into-rain-showers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water droplet</a> hits a flexible plastic beam.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers observed not only the deformation of the droplet but also how the beam vibrates in response to the impact. This setup mimics the interaction between raindrops and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-aging-discovered-in-plant-leaves/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant leaves</a>.</p>



<p>“In this study, we investigated the dynamics of a droplet impacting and oscillating a polycarbonate cantilever beam of nine varying lengths,” noted the researchers.</p>



<p>“We analyzed the cantilever's damping and vibration frequency in relation to a resonance length, where the frequencies of the droplet and the cantilever are equal.”</p>



<p>Sunghwan Jung, a professor of biological and environmental engineering at <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>, likened the beam to a springboard. </p>



<p>When the droplet strikes the beam, it triggers a dynamic interplay: the beam bends downward as the droplet stretches upward, and vice versa. </p>



<p>Professor Jung explained that this opposing motion creates a “strong damping effect,” meaning the vibrations dissipate quickly. For plants, this rapid damping reduces stress on their structures, potentially prolonging their lifespan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-raindrop-impacts-and-plant-recovery-nbsp">Raindrop impacts and plant recovery&nbsp;</h2>



<p>One key discovery in the study was the role of resonance. Lead author Crystal Fowler, a doctoral student in biological engineering, noted an intriguing pattern.</p>



<p>When the natural frequency of the beam aligned with that of the droplet, the droplet moved significantly more, and the beam’s oscillations diminished more quickly.</p>



<p>This phenomenon, previously observed but not fully understood, revealed that synchronization between the frequencies of the beam and the droplet amplifies the droplet's motion, leading to enhanced damping.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The result is a quicker return to stability for the beam. For plants, this means they can recover more efficiently after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a>, reducing mechanical strain and promoting longevity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-damping-effect-of-raindrop-impacts-nbsp">The damping effect of raindrop impacts&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Upon reaching the resonance length, the frequencies of both the droplet and the cantilever align, and the cantilever is out of phase with the oscillation of the droplet's apex. This leads to increased damping rates,” noted the researchers.</p>



<p>“At this resonance length, the droplet's force and the direction of the cantilever oppose each other. When the cantilever length exceeds the resonance length, it synchronizes more with the droplet apex. This alignment allows the droplet force and the cantilever to work in phase.”</p>



<p>According to the researchers, the findings provide fundamental insights into the damping effect of droplet impacts on elastic surfaces around resonance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-for-science-and-technology">Broader implications for science and technology</h2>



<p>Understanding the dynamics of raindrop impact on leaves has implications beyond botany. This research sheds light on how rain moves through forest canopies and could inform studies of plant evolution and morphology.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For instance, Jung's lab has also explored how rain disperses spores and how plant vibrations could indicate hydration levels.</p>



<p>The findings also open doors to innovations in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tapping-into-the-natural-power-of-plants-for-renewable-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">renewable energy</a>. By replacing the plastic beam with a piezoelectric material - one that generates electricity when subjected to pressure - rainfall could become a source of power.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Professor Jung envisions a system where beams resembling plant structures harness energy from rain, creating a fusion of nature and technology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-personal-milestone-in-discovery">A personal milestone in discovery</h2>



<p>The study marks Fowler’s first publication and reflects her lifelong fascination with understanding the natural world.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Growing up in the Navajo Nation, surrounded by plants and gardens, Fowler developed an early interest in exploration and discovery. </p>



<p>Her work in biological engineering now allows her to uncover the mechanisms that govern life’s resilience and adapt those principles for practical use.</p>

<p>“The finding is devastating but utterly unsurprising: climate change did play a role, and often a major role, in most of the events we studied, making heat, droughts, tropical cyclones, and heavy rainfall more likely and more intense across the world, destroying lives and livelihoods of millions,” noted Friederike Otto, a climate scientist from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Imperial College</a>.</p>



<p>In 2024, regions worldwide experienced the severe impacts of relentless heat waves:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Northern California and Death Valley:</strong>&nbsp;These areas recorded extreme and unprecedented temperatures, testing the limits of human endurance and infrastructure.</li>



<li><strong>Southern Europe:</strong>&nbsp;Scorching heat in this region led to drastic measures, such as Greece temporarily closing the Acropolis, one of its most iconic historical landmarks, to protect tourists and workers from the dangerous conditions.</li>



<li><strong>West Africa:</strong>&nbsp;Children in this region were among the most vulnerable, facing severe health risks and life-threatening conditions due to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intense heat</a>.</li>



<li><strong>South and Southeast Asia:</strong> Schools were forced to close in several countries to safeguard students from the extreme heat, demonstrating how climate conditions disrupted daily life and education.</li>
</ul>



<p>Adding to these challenges, the year featured a 13-month streak of high temperatures, which culminated in the hottest summer ever recorded. These events highlight the widespread and lasting impact of escalating global heat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-impact-of-climate-change-on-heat">The impact of climate change on heat</h2>



<p>The scientists conducted a detailed heat analysis, comparing 2024’s daily temperatures to a world without climate change. Some areas saw over 150 days of extreme heat this year, with the most vulnerable regions suffering disproportionately. </p>



<p>“The poorest, least developed countries on the planet are the places that are experiencing even higher numbers,” said Kristina Dahl, vice president of climate science at <a href="https://www.climatecentral.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Climate Central</a>.</p>



<p>What’s more, heat-related deaths often go unreported, which implies that the true human cost is even greater.</p>



<p>“People don’t have to die in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-will-climate-change-affect-our-outdoor-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat</a> waves. But if we can’t communicate convincingly that actually a lot of people are dying, it’s much harder to raise this awareness,” noted Otto.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nearing-the-paris-agreement-threshold">Nearing the Paris Agreement threshold</h2>



<p>This year highlighted how dangerously close the planet is to surpassing the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Clearly, there is an urgent need to address this heat and its impact on humanity and environments.</p>



<p>Scientists believe Earth could temporarily cross this threshold soon. However, it will not officially be considered a breach until such warming becomes sustained over decades.</p>



<p>In 2024, researchers analyzed 29 extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cities-are-largely-unprepared-for-the-effects-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather events</a> that caused over 3,700 deaths and displaced millions of people worldwide. </p>



<p>The findings revealed that 26 of these events were directly linked to human-caused climate change. Rising ocean temperatures and warmer air played a key role in driving destructive storms and unprecedented rainfall.</p>



<p>Although the El Niño climate pattern contributed to some events early in the year, scientists concluded that climate change had a far greater influence overall. These findings highlight the urgency of addressing climate change to mitigate its catastrophic impacts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-climate-change">Preparing for climate change</h2>



<p>“Extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-climate-shift-sheds-light-on-future-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather</a> will continue to become more frequent, intense, destructive, costly, and deadly, until we can lower the concentration of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere,” noted Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center.</p>



<p>Julie Arrighi of the <a href="https://www.climatecentre.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Center</a> offered a hopeful note. She stressed that deaths and damages from extreme weather are not inevitable. </p>



<p>“Countries can reduce those impacts by preparing for climate change and adapting for climate change,” said Arrighi. She highlighted the need for global cooperation to address these challenges.</p>



<p>2024’s extreme weather events highlight the urgency of reducing carbon emissions and building resilience to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate impacts</a>. </p>



<p>“As long as the world keeps burning fossil fuels, this will only get worse,” warned Otto. By acting now, nations can protect lives and livelihoods, mitigating the worst effects of a changing climate.</p>

<p>However, one emerging technology, solar geoengineering, presents a compelling - if controversial - option for cooling the planet quickly.</p>



<p>While the idea of altering the atmosphere might sound like science fiction, its potential impact could be profound. </p>



<p>According to a new study from the&nbsp;Georgia Tech School of Public Policy, solar geoengineering could save as many as&nbsp;400,000 lives annually&nbsp;by reducing temperature-related deaths caused by climate change. </p>



<p>Published in the&nbsp;<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)</em>, the study emphasizes that while the risks are real, the benefits might outweigh them significantly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-solar-geoengineering">Understanding solar geoengineering </h2>



<p>Solar <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/should-we-risk-geoengineering-to-reverse-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">geoengineering</a> focuses on&nbsp;stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI), a process involving tiny reflective particles sprayed into the upper atmosphere. </p>



<p>These particles bounce sunlight back into space, helping to cool the Earth. Researchers believe that by lowering global temperatures, SAI could provide humanity with a critical buffer while long-term solutions like emissions reduction and carbon removal are fully implemented.</p>



<p>"An important question is how the reduction in climate risks from solar geoengineering compares to the additional risks its use entails," noted study lead author Anthony Harding from the Georgia Tech <a href="https://spp.gatech.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Public Policy</a>.</p>



<p>The team, which included collaborators from <a href="https://www.princeton.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Princeton University</a> and the <a href="https://www.uchicago.edu/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago</a>, analyzed the potential life-saving impact of solar geoengineering. </p>



<p>Using computer models and historical data on temperature-related death rates, they simulated a scenario where the global average temperature rises by 2.5°C from pre-industrial levels. </p>



<p>The results showed that cooling the planet by just 1°C could prevent 400,000 deaths annually.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-benefits-and-risks-of-solar-geoengineering">Benefits and risks of solar geoengineering</h2>



<p>Despite its promise, solar geoengineering poses <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/survey-mother-nature-is-more-likely-to-solve-climate-change-than-geoengineering/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">significant challenges</a>. Risks such as poorer air quality and ozone layer depletion could lead to serious health problems. </p>



<p>However, the study found that the&nbsp;lives saved from cooling effects outnumber potential deaths caused by these risks by a factor of 13. Many of these lives would be saved in&nbsp;hotter, poorer regions, which are disproportionately affected by climate change.</p>



<p>On the other hand, the technology's potential is not universally positive. In cooler, wealthier regions, the decrease in global temperatures might lead to increased cold-related deaths.</p>



<p>The researchers emphasize that their findings represent an initial exploration of solar geoengineering’s effects and not a comprehensive evaluation of its global risks and benefits.</p>



<p>"This study offers a first step in quantifying the risks and benefits of solar geoengineering and shows that, for the risks we considered, the potential to save lives outweighs the direct risks,"&nbsp;Harding added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-and-ethical-concerns">Broader implications and ethical concerns</h2>



<p>The study highlights the urgent need for more robust research into solar geoengineering. <p>However, critics, including the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ucsusa.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Union of Concerned Scientists</a>, warn that the environmental, ethical, and geopolitical risks are too significant to ignore. They argue that governments might use solar geoengineering as an excuse to delay difficult but necessary emissions cuts.</p>



<p>Solar geoengineering also raises concerns about unintended ecological consequences and potential conflicts over its deployment. For instance, countries might disagree on the ideal level of cooling or the acceptable risks, leading to geopolitical tensions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limitations-of-the-study">Limitations of the study</h2>



<p>The authors acknowledge that their research has some limitations. The study is based on idealized models and assumptions about aerosol distribution, population growth, and economic development.</p>



<p>These models cannot fully capture the complexities of real-world implementation. </p>



<p>Additionally, the study does not explore solar geoengineering’s potential <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-geoengineering-save-the-doomsday-glacier/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impact on ecosystems</a>, politics, or the possibility of promoting complacency in reducing emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-geoengineering-could-alleviate-suffering">Solar geoengineering could alleviate suffering </h2>



<p>While solar geoengineering remains a controversial topic, its potential benefits make it a technology worth exploring further. For many regions, it could provide life-saving relief from climate-related heat.</p>



<p>"There's no perfect resolution to the climate crisis," said Harding. "Solar geoengineering entails risks, but it could also alleviate real suffering, so we need to better understand how the risks compare to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/we-are-changing-the-clouds-unintended-geoengineering-test-atlantic-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">benefits</a> to inform any potential future decisions around the technology."</p>



<p>As the global community searches for solutions to mitigate climate change, solar geoengineering could play a vital role. However, its adoption must come with a clear understanding of both its promises and its perils. </p>



<p>Collaborative research and careful risk assessment will be crucial in determining whether this bold strategy becomes part of humanity’s fight against a warming planet.</p>

Solar geoengineering could save up to 400,000 lives each year

<p>In an era teeming with spectacular inventions and discoveries, the possibilities for innovation in robotic technology seem endless. Among these breakthroughs, a team of scientists at the <a href="https://www.isct.ac.jp/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Science, Tokyo</a>, has found a unique approach to robotic flight control that could reshape the industry.</p>



<p>Their method? Bio-inspired wind sensing using strain sensors on flexible wings. The research, led by Professor Hiroto Tanaka, demonstrates the potential of wing strain sensing to revolutionize flapping <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/engineers-create-perching-bird-like-robot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerial robots</a>.</p>



<p>Inspired by the natural strain receptors found in birds and insects, the researchers developed a method to detect wind direction with an impressive 99.5% accuracy using strain gauges and a convolutional neural network (CNN) model.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biological-inspiration-for-robotic-wings">Biological inspiration for robotic wings</h2>



<p>Flying insects and birds possess mechanical receptors on their wings that collect strain sensory data, likely aiding their <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/exploring-the-incredible-flight-control-techniques-of-fruit-flies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flight control</a>. </p>



<p>These receptors enable them to detect changes in wind, body movement, and environmental conditions, allowing for responsive adjustments during flight. </p>



<p>Researchers were inspired by these natural systems and sought to replicate their functionality in robotic wings.</p>



<p>"Small aerial robots cannot afford conventional flow-sensing apparatus due to severe limitations in weight and size. Hence, it would be beneficial if simple wing strain sensing could be utilized to directly recognize flow conditions without additional dedicated devices," explained Tanaka.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-delicately-designed-wings-with-a-purpose">Delicately designed: Wings with a purpose</h2>



<p>The team attached seven low-cost, widely available strain gauges to a flexible wing structure that mimics the wings of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hummingbirds-adjust-their-wings-to-fly-through-very-tiny-spaces/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hummingbirds</a>. </p>



<p>These wings, composed of tapered shafts supporting wing film, were designed to closely resemble the structure of natural wings.</p>



<p>The wings were integrated into a flapping mechanism driven by a DC motor and Scotch yoke system, generating 12 flapping cycles per second. </p>



<p>Exposing the setup to wind speeds of 0.8 m/s in a wind tunnel, the team measured wing strain under seven different wind directions (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°), along with one no-wind condition.</p>



<p>The strain data was analyzed using a CNN model to classify the various wind conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-achieving-remarkable-results">Achieving remarkable results</h2>



<p>The results were striking. The researchers achieved a 99.5% classification accuracy using the strain data from a complete <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/universal-equation-predicts-the-flapping-frequency-of-birds-insects-and-even-whales/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flapping</a> cycle.</p>



<p>Even with shorter data from just 0.2 flapping cycles, the accuracy remained high at 85.2%. Further analysis showed that even with data from a single strain gauge, classification accuracy ranged from 95.2% to 98.8% for one flapping cycle.</p>



<p>However, this dropped to 65.6% or lower when using the shorter 0.2-cycle data. </p>



<p>Additionally, the removal of inner wing shafts led to reduced classification accuracy, highlighting the importance of biomimetic wing structures in enhancing wind-sensing capabilities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-vision-for-robotic-flight">A vision for robotic flight</h2>



<p>"This study contributes to the growing understanding that hovering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bird-wings-inspire-improvements-in-airplane-safety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">birds</a> and insects may sensitively perceive wind through strain sensing of their flapping wings, which would be beneficial for responsive flight control," said Tanaka. </p>



<p>"A similar system can be realized in biomimetic flapping-wing aerial robots using simple strain gauges."</p>



<p>The research showcases the immense potential of bio-inspired technology in advancing robotic flight. </p>



<p>By learning from nature, these scientists have opened the door to smarter, more adaptable robots that can navigate complex environments with precision.</p>

<p>InSight, NASA’s ambitious mission to study the deep interior of the Red Planet, may be officially over, but its legacy continues to thrive. Dedicated to unraveling Mars’s mysteries, the lander is still shedding light on the planet's dusty, enigmatic surface.</p>



<p>Even in retirement, InSight is contributing valuable insights through NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), and offering clues about the evolution of the Martian dust layer over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-the-insight-lander">Legacy of the InSight lander </h2>



<p>From the time of its landing in November 2018 until it retired in December 2022, InSight had a commendable journey. After its power source failed, however, it stopped communicating with Earth.</p>



<p>Efforts to reconnect to the lander continued, with scientists hoping that winds would clear enough dust from its solar panels to allow the batteries to recharge.</p>



<p>As these efforts proved to be unsuccessful, NASA decided to stop listening for InSight at the close of 2022.</p>



<p>Despite its unavailability, InSight carries a legacy. As the first spacecraft to register <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marsquakes-could-be-key-to-unlocking-mars-watery-secrets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marsquakes</a>, it has revealed invaluable details about the planet's crust, mantle, and core.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-processes-that-shape-the-planet">Processes that shape the planet</h2>



<p>Scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, who led the mission, used images from the stationary lander’s cameras and from MRO’s HiRISE to predict the rate of dust settling on its solar panels, as it significantly impacted power generation.</p>



<p>Science team member Ingrid Daubar of <a href="https://www.brown.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brown University</a> emphasized the importance of this observation.</p>



<p>"Even though we’re no longer hearing from InSight, it’s still teaching us about Mars. By monitoring how much dust collects on the surface - and how much gets vacuumed away by wind and dust devils - we learn more about the wind, dust cycle, and other processes that shape the planet,” said Daubar</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-tale-of-dust-devils-and-craters">A tale of dust devils and craters</h2>



<p>Dust does not just layer the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-surface-contains-more-organic-matter-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian surface</a>; it drives the forces shaping the atmosphere and landscape. </p>



<p>When InSight was active, scientists used the combination of MRO images and data from InSight's wind sensors to track dust devil paths that wound over the landscape.</p>



<p>These weather phenomena were observed to subside in winter and intensify during summer, revealing crucial insights regarding <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasas-curiosity-rover-records-a-martian-day-from-dawn-to-dusk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martian weather patterns</a>.</p>



<p>Moreover, studying dust accumulation over meteoroid impacts on Martian surfaces aids in understanding the age of craters. </p>



<p>On Earth, tectonic plates and weathering continuously transform the landscapes. But the Martian surface, speckled with ancient craters, remains largely unchanged.</p>



<p>Observing how quickly dust settles over them helps estimate their age. However, the mission was not without nostalgia. </p>



<p>"It feels a little bittersweet to look at InSight now. It was a successful mission that produced lots of great science. Of course, it would have been nice if it kept going forever, but we knew that wouldn’t happen," said Daubar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-efforts-behind-the-mission-mro-and-insight">Efforts behind the mission: MRO and InSight</h2>



<p>The University of Arizona operates HiRISE, which was built by Ball Aerospace &amp; Technologies Corp. </p>



<p>On the other hand, the MRO project and InSight were managed by a division of Caltech, JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.</p>



<p>InSight has been an integral component of NASA's Discovery Program, which was managed by the Marshall Space Flight Center and built by Lockheed Martin Space. </p>



<p>The mission included a series of collaborations from international partners, such as France’s CNES, Germany's DLR, and others, who contributed to its legacy.</p>



<p>Despite its retirement, the InSight lander lives on. Whether it's studying the dust-laden Martian winds, the changing landscape, or the planet's deep interior, it continues to enhance our understanding of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mars-missions-prepare-intense-solar-storms-coming-red-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Red Planet</a> - leaving a footprint that will never fade.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-window-into-martian-seasons">A window into Martian seasons</h2>



<p>The InSight lander’s data has also played a vital role in understanding Martian seasonal patterns.</p>



<p>By combining its findings with observations from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, scientists have uncovered the intricate ways that dust activity fluctuates with the planet’s axial tilt and orbital position. </p>



<p>During the summer months, increased solar heating drives stronger winds, which create more frequent dust devils that sweep across the surface.</p>



<p>These observations provide valuable context for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sky-cranes-are-shaping-the-future-of-mars-missions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">future missions</a>, as they highlight the challenges that Martian seasons pose to solar-powered equipment.</p>



<p>Furthermore, InSight’s early recordings of atmospheric conditions - paired with MRO’s high-resolution imaging - have given researchers an unprecedented ability to map how dust storms begin, expand, and eventually dissipate.</p>



<p>This knowledge not only deepens our understanding of Mars' dynamic atmosphere but also informs strategies for protecting human explorers and robotic systems on future missions.</p>

<p>Nestled in the rugged terrain of the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales lives a vulnerable species known as the Parma wallaby, also known as the white-throated wallaby.</p>



<p>This elusive marsupial, with its shy demeanor and unique ecological role, is an integral part of the region’s biodiversity.</p>



<p>Despite being a familiar sight to locals, the Parma wallaby is balancing on the edge of survival, its future hanging by a thread.</p>



<p>Listed as "Near Threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the species faces mounting threats that could drive it closer to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-may-be-enduring-its-seventh-mass-extinction-not-sixth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extinction</a> without timely intervention.</p>



<p>Immediate and focused conservation measures are essential to ensure its continued existence and safeguard the delicate balance of its ecosystem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pressing-threats-to-the-parma-wallaby">Pressing threats to the Parma wallaby </h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.anu.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian National University</a> (ANU) has been at the forefront of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/headstarting-strategy-saved-an-endangered-wallaby-population/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wallaby</a> conservation research. </p>



<p>ANU experts, including Professor George Wilson, have been deeply involved in studying the history and past relocation attempts of Parma wallaby populations, alongside the pressing threats to their habitats. The team's findings paint a troubling picture.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fear-of-predators-can-damage-prey-as-much-as-predation-itself/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Predation</a> remains one of the primary challenges for this vulnerable marsupial, significantly compounding its already precarious status and hampering recovery efforts.</p>



<p>The Black Summer bushfires caused severe destruction to Parma wallaby populations and their shrinking habitats. </p>



<p>Professor Wilson emphasized that these catastrophic fires have pushed the species closer to the brink of extinction, highlighting the urgent need for proactive conservation measures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-need-for-safe-havens">The need for safe havens</h2>



<p>Efforts to reintroduce the Parma wallaby to certain areas have been met with heartbreaking results. </p>



<p>"An attempt to reintroduce a population near Robertson in New South Wales was unsuccessful, with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-foxes-can-be-domesticated-thanks-to-breeding/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">foxes</a> killing more than 40 Parma wallabies within three months," noted Professor Wilson.</p>



<p>Interestingly, New Zealand, where there are no foxes, is grappling with an overabundance of Parma wallabies. </p>



<p>"We know Parma wallabies are thriving in a predator-free enclosure at Mount Wilson. We need to create more privately owned safe havens and captive breeding programs like that one to secure these animals’ long-term survival," said Professor Wilson. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-collaborating-for-parma-wallaby-conservation">Collaborating for Parma wallaby conservation</h2>



<p>While the New South Wales government’s <em>Saving Our Species</em> program outlines conservation strategies for the Parma wallaby, Professor Wilson argues that it often overlooks the importance of establishing safe havens. </p>



<p>These sanctuaries, he explained, provide several key benefits: they offer population security during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/australian-bushfires-triggered-rare-multi-year-la-nina/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bushfires</a>, support disease and genetic management, and protect the species from vehicle collisions and introduced predators.</p>



<p>Some progress is being made, such as the construction of a wallaby enclosure at Ngambaa Nature Reserve, which will relocate some Parma wallabies from Mount Wilson. However, experts emphasize that more facilities are urgently needed.</p>



<p>“Predator-proof fencing is costly to build and maintain. Government agencies should collaborate with private landholders to construct them in a cost-effective manner and foster greater partnerships with zoos, nature reserves, and commercial investors,” said Professor Wilson.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-past-efforts-and-future-goals">Past efforts and future goals</h2>



<p>Despite these efforts, some researchers believe the <em>Saving Our Species</em> strategy is overly ambitious and unrealistic for government agencies to achieve alone.</p>



<p>Samaa Kalsia from the Australian Wildlife Services, a co-author of the study with Professor Wilson, noted that many of the identified threats to Parma wallabies stem from insufficient research and understanding.</p>



<p>“A lot of the threats to Parma wallabies outlined by the New South Wales government are actually indicative of a lack of knowledge or an insufficient understanding about the animals’ habitat and food requirements and the extent of the impact of predation by foxes, among other concerns,” said Kalsia.</p>



<p>She added that historical neglect in studying Parma wallabies has compounded their risk of extinction. Furthermore, the state’s conservation plan fails to incentivize private landowners to implement measures that could aid the species’ recovery.</p>



<p>“It’s unlikely the threats to these animals will be addressed unless governments facilitate rather than inhibit the creation of sanctuaries like the one at Yengo, Mount Wilson and others at Barrington Tops and Bannockburn,” noted Kalsia.</p>



<p>The future of the Parma wallaby depends on coordinated action and collaboration across all stakeholders, from government bodies to private landholders and conservation organizations.</p>

Time is running out to protect the Parma wallaby

<p>Florida has unveiled plans to test an unconventional road-building material: phosphogypsum, which is a radioactive byproduct of phosphate mining.</p>



<p>The decision has stirred both optimism and alarm, as experts weigh potential economic benefits against public health risks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-phosphogypsum">What is phosphogypsum?</h2>



<p>Phosphogypsum is a waste product generated during the production of phosphorus, an essential nutrient in fertilizers. </p>



<p>To extract phosphorus, phosphate rock is dissolved in acid. This process separates uranium, which ends up in the acid, and radium, which remains in the leftover material. The remaining waste is called phosphogypsum.</p>



<p>Radium naturally decays over time and releases radon gas. Radon is a radioactive gas known to increase the risk of lung cancer when people are exposed to it for extended periods.</p>



<p>Due to these risks, federal regulations require phosphogypsum to be stored in specially designed structures called engineered stacks. </p>



<p>These stacks are massive, often hundreds of feet tall and spanning large areas, and resemble small mountains. The purpose of these stacks is to keep the radioactive material contained and limit human exposure in order to ensure public safety.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-green-light-for-radioactive-road-base">Green light for radioactive road base</h2>



<p>Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency (<a href="https://www.epa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPA</a>) approved a pilot project by Mosaic, the largest phosphate producer in the United States.</p>



<p>The project involves building four test <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smart-cars-that-talk-to-each-other-could-avoid-fatal-crashes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">road sections</a> at Mosaic’s New Wales facility in Polk County, Florida, using phosphogypsum as a road base.</p>



<p>The EPA described the project’s risks as “low” based on multiple modeling efforts. However, the approval is limited to this specific initiative. Any broader applications would require additional evaluations and regulatory approvals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-risks-of-radon-exposure">Health risks of radon exposure</h2>



<p>Radon, an odorless and colorless gas, poses significant health risks when present at elevated levels. </p>



<p>It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. - responsible for about 21,000 deaths annually - according to the Center for Biological Diversity. Prolonged exposure, especially near phosphogypsum-based roads, could raise public health concerns.</p>



<p>Federal regulators have historically banned phosphogypsum in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cities-are-largely-unprepared-for-the-effects-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">construction</a> due to the presence of these risks.</p>



<p>In 1992, the EPA cited potential dangers for construction workers and future residents living near roads containing phosphogypsum. Exceptions have been made for controlled agricultural and research uses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-using-radioactive-materials-in-roads">Using radioactive materials in roads</h2>



<p>Critics argue that the EPA’s approval prioritizes industry interests over public safety. Florida has faced challenges with phosphogypsum in the past. </p>



<p>In 2021, a breach at a former phosphate mining site released 215 million gallons of toxic water into Tampa Bay, sparking environmental and public <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urban-green-spaces-are-urgently-needed-across-the-global-south/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">health crises</a>.</p>



<p>“That dramatically increases the potential for harm to our road crews and water quality,” said Ragan Whitlock, an attorney for the <a href="https://www.biologicaldiversity.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Center for Biological Diversity</a>. He accused the EPA of succumbing to political pressure from the phosphate industry.</p>



<p>Environmentalists also highlight the long-term implications of using radioactive material in infrastructure. Concerns include radon exposure for road workers and communities living near phosphogypsum roads, as well as potential contamination of water sources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-economic-potential-of-phosphogypsum-in-roads">Economic potential of phosphogypsum in roads</h2>



<p>Proponents of phosphogypsum-based roads see economic potential. </p>



<p>Jackie Barron, a Mosaic representative, emphasized the cost advantages of using phosphogypsum compared to traditional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-tropical-thunderstorms-are-radioactive/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">materials</a> like limestone rock.</p>



<p>“If there is an alternative use for this material, and we don’t have to grow or manage these stacks unnecessarily, then why would we not go down that path?” Barron said in an interview with NPR in 2023.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regulatory-and-political-uncertainty">Regulatory and political uncertainty</h2>



<p>Florida passed legislation last year to expand the list of materials allowed in public road construction. However, the state’s Department of Transportation must still assess phosphogypsum’s suitability before its widespread adoption.</p>



<p>The issue has seen political shifts. The Trump administration approved phosphogypsum’s use in roads, but the Biden administration later reversed this decision. </p>



<p>It remains unclear how the incoming administration will address the material’s future.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-road-construction-and-radioactive-waste">Road construction and radioactive waste</h2>



<p>While Mosaic’s pilot project may pave the way for innovative recycling, it also highlights the need for careful risk assessment. </p>



<p>The debate over phosphogypsum highlights the broader challenge of balancing economic benefits with environmental and public health <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chernobyl-dogs-are-rapidly-evolving-in-strange-ways-due-to-nuclear-radiation-exposure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">concerns</a>.</p>



<p>Florida’s experiment will likely serve as a critical case study for the rest of the country. Whether it’s a breakthrough or a misstep, the outcome will have lasting implications for road construction and radioactive waste management.</p>

<p>Most of the plastic that pollutes our oceans comes from an unexpected source: rivers. Strangely enough, research on plastic pollution has been primarily focused on ocean environments - leaving freshwater sources a bit neglected.</p>



<p>Enter a team of innovative scientists from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, who are turning the tide with their novel research.</p>



<p>Published in the journal <em>Nature</em>, the study explores the use of remote sensing technology to monitor and remove plastic debris from rivers like the Mississippi.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-concern-of-plastic-pollution">Growing concern of plastic pollution</h2>



<p>Plastic pollution in oceans has become a global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-pollution-is-changing-the-entire-earth-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental crisis</a>. The United Nations Environment Program (<a href="https://www.unep.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a>) ranks it among the top pollution challenges of our time.</p>



<p>Yet, freshwater environments - rivers and lakes - have received far less attention, despite being the primary conduits for plastic waste flowing into oceans. Recognizing this gap, the researchers set out to find innovative solutions for freshwater plastic pollution.</p>



<p>Traditional methods of monitoring and removing plastic debris rely on manual sampling. These techniques, while effective, are time-consuming and expensive. </p>



<p>The new study addresses these limitations with advanced remote sensing technology, offering a more cost-effective and scalable solution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-remote-sensing-to-detect-plastic-pollution">Remote sensing to detect plastic pollution</h2>



<p>The researchers utilized spectral reflectance properties - specific wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum - to detect different types of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/could-this-breakthrough-finally-solve-the-plastic-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic</a> debris.</p>



<p>By isolating the unique spectral signatures of plastics, the technology can distinguish them from natural materials commonly found in freshwater - such as sediments, driftwood, and algae.</p>



<p>Study lead author Mohammadali Olyaei is a Ph.D. student in the <a href="https://cse.umn.edu/cege" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering</a>.</p>



<p>“We could use this technology to identify different types of plastics in the water simultaneously. This is key information that we need when employing other technology, like drones, to capture and remove plastic debris in natural environments,” explained Olyaei.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-in-real-world-conditions">Testing in real-world conditions</h2>



<p>The research team conducted their experiments at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, where the Mississippi River flows through the facility. </p>



<p>This setting allowed the team to test their theories in real river conditions. They combined a remote sensing platform, called a spectroradiometer, with a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera to classify and monitor various types of debris based on their spectral signatures.</p>



<p>This approach not only helps identify plastic debris but also lays the foundation for deploying technologies, like drones, for cleanup efforts. This dual capability of monitoring and removing debris makes remote sensing a promising tool in the fight against <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-can-we-combat-the-escalating-plastic-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic pollution</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-environmental-impact">Broader environmental impact</h2>



<p>Study co-author Ardeshir Ebtehaj is an associate professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering.</p>



<p>“If we can develop technology at the Mississippi headwaters, in a place like Minnesota, to catch plastic debris, we can protect the downstream states and the entire ocean from plastic pollution," said Professor Ebtehaj.</p>



<p>"As soon as these plastics begin to spread more and more, their control becomes more and more challenging.” </p>



<p>By stopping plastics at the source, the researchers hope to mitigate the downstream effects of pollution. </p>



<p>The study emphasizes the importance of addressing freshwater systems to prevent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/is-it-still-possible-to-save-the-ocean-from-plastic-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic</a> from reaching oceans, where it becomes far more difficult to manage.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-steps-scaling-up-the-research">Next steps: Scaling up the research</h2>



<p>The team plans to expand their research to larger river systems in order to understand the movement of plastic debris across freshwater networks and to refine removal strategies.</p>



<p>This broader scope will also shed light on the origins of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-win-the-battle-of-planet-vs-plastic-drastic-changes-are-needed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plastic</a> pollution, which will enable more targeted interventions.</p>

<p>According to a new study by the University of California, Riverside (UCR), a simple solution could lie in raking away this “thatch” - a layer of dead leaves and debris that blankets the ground.</p>



<p>This technique not only encourages biodiversity but also helps reduce fire risk in these ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-raking">What is raking?</h2>



<p>Raking involves using a tool, like a rake, to physically remove surface debris, including leaves, dead grass, and other organic material, from the soil. This process, often part of gardening or land management, has the following applications beyond basic cleanup.</p>

<p>The study, published in the journal <em>Restoration Ecology</em>, compared raking with other invasive grass <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-calls-for-global-change-to-stop-biodiversity-loss/">mana</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-calls-for-global-change-to-stop-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gement</a> techniques like controlled burns, hand weeding, and herbicide application.</p>



<p>The results? Raking stands out as a low-cost, less labor-intensive, and ecologically friendly alternative.</p>



<p>“In these ecosystems, native seeds often fall on thick layers of thatch and can’t germinate. Raking the thatch lets light in and gives native plants a chance to grow,” explained <a href="https://profiles.ucr.edu/app/home/profile/markos" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marko Spasojevic</a>, the study's lead author and UCR associate professor of plant ecology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-return-of-native-wildflowers">The return of native wildflowers</h2>



<p>The research was conducted on grasslands near the UCR campus. The team used a grid of paired plots - one raked and one left untouched - to observe changes in plant communities over three years.</p>



<p>The findings revealed that raking significantly increased overall plant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diversity</a>. Invasive grasses like ripgut brome declined, while native and exotic wildflowers, collectively known as forbs, thrived.</p>



<p>Ripgut brome, one of the dominant invasive species, is notorious for its sharp bristles that can injure grazing animals. </p>



<p>“It’s super nasty for sheep and cattle to eat,” said Spasojevic. On the other hand, native flowers like the common fiddleneck, a species prevalent in Riverside, showed modest improvement when raking was applied.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growth-of-exotic-flowers">Growth of exotic flowers</h2>



<p>However, the study revealed a trade-off. While raking reduced invasive grasses, it also encouraged the growth of certain exotic wildflowers, such as mustard, which can be highly invasive.</p>



<p>“Raking boosted native wildflowers by about 5% and exotic forbs by 7 to 10%,” said Advyth Ramachandran, co-leader of the project. </p>



<p>“This doesn’t mean raking isn’t worthwhile. It’s a simple, low-cost method that could be a first step for restoring these systems,” noted Ramachandran, a former UCR undergraduate who is now studying plant ecology at the <a href="https://www.colorado.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Colorado, Boulder</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-seeds-initiative">The SEEDS initiative </h2>



<p>This study represents more than just ecological research; it’s a proof of student-led innovation. The project traces its origins to the 1980s, when the study plots were created for an introductory biology class and later abandoned. </p>



<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ramachandran and fellow UCR students revived the site through the university’s SEEDS club, a grassroots research initiative.</p>



<p>“We built this project from scratch, writing protocols, identifying species, and involving over 25 undergraduates,” Ramachandran said. “It’s rare for undergraduates to initiate and lead publishable research like this.”</p>



<p>Spasojevic credited the project’s success to its accessibility. “The research site is on campus, so students could sample between classes. It lowered barriers for involvement and became a rich mentorship opportunity,” he said.</p>



<p>The SEEDS initiative continues to thrive, with students now collecting data for a fifth consecutive year.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-practical-implications-for-land-managers">Practical implications for land managers</h2>



<p>The findings offer a practical, low-cost method for land managers seeking to restore <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-light-sustains-biodiversity-over-millions-of-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a> in California’s grasslands and coastal sage ecosystems. </p>



<p>Native plants play a critical role in these ecosystems by providing food and habitat for local wildlife, supporting pollinators like bees, and preventing soil erosion. Meanwhile, invasive grasses pose multiple threats: outcompeting native plants, reducing biodiversity, and increasing wildfire risk with their dense, flammable layers.</p>



<p>“This project shows how small actions - like raking - can make meaningful differences in our ecosystems,” Ramachandran said. “It’s a promising step toward restoring California’s native landscapes.”</p>

<p>The UCR team’s research highlights the importance of simple yet effective interventions in combating ecological challenges. <p>Carrying too much visible fat around the waist and hips is a well-known health risk. However, unseen fat around the heart also poses significant dangers. </p>



<p>Scientists at the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System are developing a non-invasive method to assess these risks, potentially transforming how doctors diagnose and treat heart disease.</p>



<p>Led by Dr. Frederick H. Epstein of UVA’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, the researchers are using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to analyze the composition of epicardial adipose tissue - the fat surrounding the heart.</p>



<p>This technique could help doctors pinpoint patients who are at risk for severe heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure. It may also help predict patient responses to treatments, which would enhance care strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-progress-in-heart-imaging">Progress in heart imaging</h2>



<p>Initial testing has shown promising results. The new MRI technique offers insights that were previously unavailable.</p>



<p>“Using this new MRI technique, we now for the very first time have the ability to know the composition of the fat that accumulates around the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-patients-have-a-unique-vulnerability-to-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart</a>,” said Dr. Amit R. Patel, a cardiologist at <a href="https://uvahealth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UVA Health</a>.</p>



<p>“This is important because, depending on its makeup, the fat which surrounds the heart has the potential to release damaging substances directly into the heart muscle, leading to serious heart problems.”</p>



<p>Dr. Patel noted that the research could enable patients to convert unhealthy fat into healthier forms using lifestyle changes or medications.</p>



<p>“We believe that by doing so, we will be able to reduce some of the complications associated with heart disease,” he added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dual-nature-of-epicardial-fat">Dual nature of epicardial fat</h2>



<p>Epicardial adipose tissue is a type of fat that surrounds the heart. In healthy individuals, this fat plays an important protective role, helping the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-more-plant-protein-lowers-the-risk-of-heart-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart function</a> properly.</p>



<p>However, in people with conditions like obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, or unhealthy habits like smoking and poor diets, this fat can accumulate excessively. In this case, it may become inflamed and undergo changes that can harm the heart instead of protecting it.</p>



<p>Scientists can now study the composition of this fat by analyzing the types of fatty acids it contains - saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated.</p>



<p>These insights help doctors identify people at risk of heart disease before symptoms appear. Finding and addressing these risks early can slow down the progression of heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tackling-the-challenges-of-heart-scans">Tackling the challenges of heart scans</h2>



<p>Capturing clear images of heart fat posed significant technical challenges due to constant heart and lung motion. To overcome this, the team developed advanced computational methods and innovative imaging approaches.</p>



<p>“The ability to make these measurements in epicardial adipose tissue required the use of advanced computational methods that can extract the unique signature of saturated fatty acids from an overall noisy signal,” said Dr. Epstein.</p>



<p>He commended&nbsp;Jack Echols, a biomedical engineering graduate student, for his pivotal contributions.</p>



<p>With these advances, the team can now obtain precise images in a single breath hold, paving the way for real-world applications.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-findings-from-heart-scans">Early findings from heart scans</h2>



<p>Tests revealed that the fat surrounding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-blood-test-accurately-predicts-cardiovascular-heart-disease-risk-30-years-into-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart</a> in obese patients with prior heart attacks contained excessive saturated fatty acids. </p>



<p>This discovery suggests that the new MRI technique could help identify at-risk individuals and improve patient outcomes.</p>



<p>“Being able to see the composition of the fat that surrounds the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-worsens-cardiovascular-health-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heart</a> will improve our understanding of heart disease and may lead to the development of new treatment strategies in the future,” noted Dr. Patel.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heart-scans-and-early-interventions">Heart scans and early interventions</h2>



<p>The new MRI technique represents a significant leap in heart disease care. </p>



<p>"Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), the adipose depot positioned between the myocardium and the visceral pericardium, has emerged as an important contributor to cardiovascular disease, particularly in obesity and metabolic heart disease," explained the researchers.</p>



<p>By providing a clearer picture of this fat composition around the heart, the new imaging technique could empower doctors to intervene earlier and more effectively, reducing the burden of heart disease worldwide.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

This might include increasing exercise to protect heart health and maintain muscle mass, or reducing alcohol consumption in the 40s as the body's ability to metabolize it declines.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-approaches-to-anti-aging-treatment">New approaches to anti-aging treatment</h2>



<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. These six combinations restored aged cells to youthfulness in under a week, offering safer alternatives to gene therapy.</p>



<p>Researchers identified new biomarkers like "InflammAge," a saliva-based test measuring chronic inflammation associated with aging. This non-invasive approach could change how we monitor aging and intervention.</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. <p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
