<p>For a long time, the Stone Age has been painted in narrow strokes. Men hunted with stone tools, women cooked. and children watched. This idea shaped research, museum displays, even the way skeletons were identified. But the ground in Latvia is telling a very different story.</p>



<p>At Zvejnieki, one of Europe’s largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/">Stone Age</a> cemeteries, archaeologists have found that tools buried with the dead were not just men’s possessions. Women had them too, so did children. </p>



<p>The way these objects were placed in graves shows they carried meaning far beyond daily work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-graves-and-stone-tools">Ancient graves and stone tools</h2>



<p>Zvejnieki sits near Lake Burtnieks. The site has more than 330 graves, spanning over 5,000 years. Excavations began in the 1960s and continued for decades. </p>



<p>Thousands of ornaments made from animal teeth and amber came out of the ground. Red ochre stained the soil around many skeletons. These details have been studied again and again.</p>



<p>But stone tools? They were mostly ignored. Archaeologists thought of them as practical. Not decorative or symbolic. Just leftovers of everyday survival. That view collapsed once Dr. Aimée Little and her team returned with new tools of their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-closer-at-stone">Looking closer at stone</h2>



<p>The Stone Dead Project used microscopes to search for tiny traces on the artifacts. The team studied how each tool was made, used, and finally placed in graves. </p>



<p>The results surprised everyone. Some scrapers showed wear from working animal hides. Others looked fresh, almost untouched, as if they had been created only for burial. And many were broken on purpose before being laid to rest.</p>



<p>These details reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-traveled-long-distances-to-find-colorful-stones-for-tools/">stone</a> tools were not only about survival. They were part of rituals. Part of how people said goodbye. Part of how they thought about life and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-in-all-graves">Tools in all graves</h2>



<p>The discoveries challenged long-standing ideas about gender. Women were just as likely, sometimes even more likely, to be buried with stone artifacts. Children and older adults received them too. </p>



<p>That makes the picture clear: these objects were not reserved for hunters. They belonged to everyone.</p>



<p>“Our findings overturn the old stereotype of ‘Man the Hunter’ which has been a dominant theme in Stone Age studies, and has even influenced, on occasion, how some infants have even been sexed, on the basis that they were given lithic tools,” noted Dr. Little.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-traditions-over-time">Changing traditions over time</h2>



<p>Burial practices at Zvejnieki shifted. In earlier centuries, tools were rare in graves. Later, by the 4th millennium BC, deposits grew larger. Some people were buried with dozens of flint artefacts. Many had never been used. Their role was clearly symbolic.</p>



<p>This change matched wider cultural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">shifts</a> across the Baltic. Communities began to use more red ochre. They buried people collectively. Clay death masks appeared. The inclusion of flint tools fit into this wider move toward more elaborate rituals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-tools-reveal">What the tools reveal</h2>



<p>Micro-wear analysis showed patterns that mattered. Scrapers often carried traces of hide working, suggesting that preparing skins was a valued activity even in death. </p>



<p>Bone and butchery marks appeared on some pieces. Mineral traces, connected to ochre, turned up only in female burials. That detail hints at gender-specific ritual roles.</p>



<p>Bifacial points - long seen as hunting weapons - often showed no use at all. They were made, broken, and buried. Their meaning was symbolic, not practical. Destroying them may have been part of letting go, part of a shared tradition that stretched beyond one community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-graves-with-stone-tools">Special graves with stone tools</h2>



<p>Some graves stood out. An older child was buried with more than 40 tools, many unused, alongside ornaments of amber and animal teeth.</p>



<p>Another grave, belonging to a young woman, contained primary deposits with her body and additional offerings at her feet. These were not random choices. They were deliberate acts, full of meaning for the people who stood around the grave.</p>



<p>These burials show that women and children were not peripheral. They stood at the center of ritual traditions. Their graves carried messages for the living.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-old-assumptions">Breaking old assumptions</h2>



<p>The implications are clear. Tools in Stone Age burials were not simply for men. They were symbols for everyone - men, women, children, and elders. They carried social meaning and were part of rituals that bound communities together in the face of loss.</p>



<p>“This research demonstrates that we cannot make these gendered assumptions and that lithic grave goods played an important role in the mourning rituals of children and women, as well as men,” noted Dr. Anđa Petrović, from the <a href="https://www.bg.ac.rs/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Belgrade</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-matters-today">Why it matters today</h2>



<p>What might look like simple flint flakes turn out to be keys to identity, memory, and ritual. They tell us that Stone Age communities valued more than hunting. They cared about symbolism. They cared about honoring all their members.</p>



<p>“The study highlights how much more there is to learn about the lives - and deaths - of Europe’s earliest communities, and why even the seemingly simplest objects can unlock insights about our shared human past and how people responded to death,” said Dr. Little.</p>



<p>The study shows that re-examining overlooked artifacts can transform our understanding of the past. At Zvejnieki, stone tools are no longer just tools. They are stories carved in flint, carrying the voices of communities that lived, grieved, and remembered.</p>

<p>In the realm of famous thieves and tricksters from Han Solo to Catwoman, scientists uncovered a new set of unusual suspects - tiny wasps from an understudied genus.</p>



<p>The wasps are not caped vigilantes or gallant galactic rogues, but minuscule marauders in the spotlight thanks to new research from Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences. The experts have named 22 new species of gall wasps.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-rich-tapestry-of-wasp-thieves">A rich tapestry of wasp thieves</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invasive-wasps-are-expanding-northward-on-the-west-coast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gall wasps</a> are insects that lead a kleptomaniac-like existence. They inhabit small structures called "galls," which they steal from other wasp species.</p>



<p>In recognition of their thieving ways, scientists named the newly discovered insects after infamous thieves and tricksters from history, mythology, and pop culture.</p>



<p>Consider the wasp known as Prometheus, borrowing its name from the titan in Greek mythology who stole fire from the gods and gave it to mankind. This wasp's vibrant, fiery red coloring made it an ideal candidate for such a legendary name.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-study">Significance of the study</h2>



<p>This research is more than just a fancy naming ceremony for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-insect-decline-what-are-the-causes-and-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insects</a>. Study lead author Louis Nastasi, a doctoral student of entomology at Penn State, emphasized the significance of the team's work.</p>



<p>"By naming these species, we give other researchers an anchor they can carry forward to other studies because now they can identify wasps that were previously unknown," Nastasi said. </p>



<p>"It provides a base and a tool kit for future work that could help us understand these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wasps-are-undervalued-as-predators-and-pollinators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> and their ecosystems more broadly."</p>



<p>The research begins a new chapter in understanding these elusive wasps and offers valuable insights into their biology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research">Focus of the research </h2>



<p>The catalyst for the study was a tricky question raised by a separate study on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-evolution-occurred-tens-of-millions-of-years-earlier-than-previously-believed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution of gall wasps</a>. A team from the <a href="https://uiowa.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Iowa</a> had DNA data from multiple wasps but struggled to identify the exact species.</p>



<p>This led to a collaboration with Nastasi, whose expertise is in species identification, description, and diagnosis.</p>



<p>“I ended up in conversation with Andrew Forbes, who’s the leader of the University of Iowa team, and he told me about the difficulties they were having,” Nastasi said. </p>



<p>"And since my area of expertise is species identification, description and diagnosis of these tiny wasps, he asked if it would be possible for me to get involved and figure out what exactly is going on.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-new-wasp-thieves">Identifying new wasp thieves</h2>



<p>Nastasi combined biological and molecular information from the team's previous study with his own anatomical and physical characteristic insect analysis. This multi-layered approach led to surprising findings.</p>



<p>"We found that some of the insects thought to be one&nbsp;single species&nbsp;were actually two independent species, and that using only the molecular data did not sufficiently separate them into multiple species," Nastasi said. </p>



<p>"We had to combine that information with this new morphological analysis, and then by combining those types of data, it allowed us to get a clear vision of what each of these species are."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stories-behind-the-thieving-wasps">Stories behind the thieving wasps </h2>



<p>Once the species were accurately categorized, it was time to christen them with names. The scientists named a wasp with a penchant for thieving Ceroptres selinae after Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman from DC Comics. </p>



<p>The experts named a species with a traitorous streak Ceroptres bruti after Marcus Junius Brutus, the infamous betrayer of Julius Caesar. </p>



<p>A third wasp was named Ceroptres soloi after Hans Solo, the charming rogue and thief from the Star Wars franchise. Nastasi and his team said the naming process itself was creatively stimulating.</p>



<p>"A lot of effort goes into identifying these species and there's a lot of art in choosing a good species name, so it was exciting to exemplify that and really carefully select names for these new species," said Nastasi.</p>



<p>Our understanding of these tiny creatures is just beginning and there are many mysteries to uncover. In the future, researchers may take a closer look at the life cycles, biological traits, environment, and thieving strategies of gall wasps.</p>

<p>In the world of quantum physics, events unfold at mind-boggling speeds. Processes once thought to happen in an instant, like quantum entanglement, are now being examined in the tiniest fractions of a second.</p>



<p>It's like freezing a fleeting moment to uncover the subtle details hidden in plain sight.</p>



<p>Together with a team of researchers from China, Prof. Joachim Burgdörfer and his colleagues from the <a href="http://www.itp.tuwien.ac.at/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Theoretical Physics</a> at TU Wien are measuring these fleeting moments to understand how quantum entanglement actually happens.</p>



<p>These scientists aren't focused on the existence of quantum entanglement, but are keen on uncovering how it begins -- how exactly do two particles become quantum entangled?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-quantum-entanglement">Understanding quantum entanglement</h2>



<p>Using advanced computer simulations, they've managed to peek into processes that happen on attosecond timescales -- a billionth of a billionth of a second.</p>



<p>Quantum entanglement is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strange and fascinating phenomenon</a> where two particles become so interconnected that they share a single state.</p>



<p>It's like having two magic coins that always land on the same side -- flip one, and the other mysteriously shows the same result, even if it's miles away.</p>



<p>"You could say that the particles have no individual properties, they only have common properties. From a mathematical point of view, they belong firmly together, even if they are in two completely different places," explains Prof. Burgdörfer. </p>



<p>This means that measuring one particle instantly affects the state of the other, no matter how far apart they are.</p>



<p>In simple terms, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/full-chemical-complexity-of-quantum-decoherence-finally-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">entangled particles</a> share a connection that lets them "talk" to each other instantly. Measure one particle, and you'll immediately know something about its partner. </p>



<p>This strange behavior defies our everyday understanding of how the world works, making entanglement one of the most mind-boggling concepts in quantum physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experimenting-with-lasers-and-electrons">Experimenting with lasers and electrons</h2>



<p>As incomprehensible as the concept of quantum entanglement seems, it's no longer a matter of debate whether or not it's true, and that's not what this study is about.</p>



<p>“We, on the other hand, are interested in something else -- in finding out <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-discovery-is-a-revolutionary-step-forward/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how this entanglement develops</a> in the first place and which physical effects play a role on extremely short time scales,” says Prof. Iva Březinová, one of the authors of the current publication.</p>



<p>To explore this, the team looked at atoms struck by an extremely intense and high-frequency laser pulse. Imagine shining a super-powered flashlight on an atom. </p>



<p>One electron gets so excited that it breaks free and flies away. If the laser is strong enough, a second electron inside the atom also gets a jolt, moving to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trapped-atoms-forced-to-serve-as-transistors-quantum-network/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher energy level</a> and changing its orbit around the nucleus.</p>



<p>So, after this intense blast of light, one electron is off on its own, and another is left behind but not quite the same as before. </p>



<p>"We can show that these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/finding-quantum-coherence-chemical-reaction-chaos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">two electrons</a> are now quantum entangled," says Prof. Burgdörfer. "You can only analyze them together -- and you can perform a measurement on one of the electrons and learn something about the other electron at the same time."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-time-gets-fuzzy">When time gets fuzzy</h2>



<p>Here's where things get <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simulation-hypothesis-leaped-serious-quantum-lab-experiments-consciousness-connection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">really intriguing</a>. The electron that flies away doesn't have a definite moment when it left the atom. </p>



<p>"This means that the birth time of the electron that flies away is not known in principle. You could say that the electron itself doesn't know when it left the atom," Prof. Burgdörfer notes. </p>



<p>It's in what's called a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/impossibility-paradox-calculating-incalculable-quantum-realm-particles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum superposition</a>, meaning it exists in multiple states at once.</p>



<p>But there's more. The time when the electron departs is linked to the energy state of the electron that stays behind. </p>



<p>If the remaining electron has higher energy, the departing electron likely left earlier. If it's in a lower energy state, the electron probably left later -- on average around 232 attoseconds later.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-the-unmeasurable">Measuring the unmeasurable</h2>



<p>An attosecond is so brief that it's beyond the ability for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/transmitting-quantum-information-using-electron-spin/">most people to understand</a>. Yet, these tiny differences aren't just theoretical.</p>



<p>"These differences can not only be calculated, but also measured in experiments," says Prof. Burgdörfer.</p>



<p>The team has devised a measurement protocol combining two different laser beams to capture this elusive timing. </p>



<p>They're already collaborating with other researchers eager to test and observe these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/watching-electrons-move-1-quintillionth-of-second-attoseconds-attomicroscopy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ultrafast entanglements in the lab</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-does-quantum-entanglement-matter">Why does quantum entanglement matter?</h2>



<p>Understanding how entanglement forms could have big implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-quantum-revolution-will-impact-all-aspects-of-society/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum technologies</a> like cryptography and computing. </p>



<p>Instead of just trying to maintain entanglement, scientists can now study its very inception. This could lead to new ways of controlling <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-computer-can-instantly-execute-a-task-that-would-normally-take-47-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum systems</a> and enhancing the security of quantum communications.</p>



<p>The journey doesn't stop here. Prof. Burgdörfer and his team are excited about the next steps. </p>



<p>"We are already in talks with research teams who want to prove such ultrafast entanglements," he shares. </p>



<p>By exploring in these ultrashort time scales, they're not just observing quantum effects -- they're redefining how we understand the very <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-consciousness-and-you-what-happens-when-machines-become-sentient/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fabric of reality</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-entanglement-and-the-future">Quantum entanglement and the future</h2>



<p>It's clear that in the quantum world, even the briefest moments hold a wealth of information. &nbsp;</p>



<p>“The electron doesn't just jump out of the atom. It is a wave that spills out of the atom, so to speak -- and that takes a certain amount of time,” explains Iva Březinová. </p>



<p>“It is precisely during this phase that the entanglement occurs, the effect of which can then be precisely measured later by observing the two electrons," she concludes.</p>



<p>So next time you blink, remember that in less than a trillionth of that time, entire quantum events are unfolding, revealing secrets that could change the future of technology and our understanding of the universe.</p>

Quantum entanglement speed is measured for the first time, and it's too fast to comprehend

<p>Under the unforgiving Arctic sun, the wintry landscape swarms with shivers and whispers that tell tales of an unrelenting rise in temperatures. This icy expanse, our last bastion of frost, is experiencing a warming spree that outpaces the global average by three to four times. </p>



<p>But here's a twist: new research suggests that the slow-down of a crucial ocean current could ironically, cool the rising heat in the Arctic.&nbsp;Could this be the solution we’ve been waiting for?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-slowing-ocean-current-in-the-arctic">Slowing ocean current in the Arctic</h2>



<p>For decades, scientists have sounded alarms on the consequences of unchecked Arctic warming. They warn of severe implications for wildlife, massive shifts in weather patterns, and more frequent&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-industrialization-how-will-it-impact-delicate-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme events</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Is there any respite? According to a study spearheaded by UC Riverside, there just might be.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changes-in-atlantic-circulation">Changes in Atlantic circulation </h2>



<p>The study explores the effects of the slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) on the Arctic climate. </p>



<p>Think of AMOC as our planet’s heat distributor, transferring warmth from the tropics to higher latitudes.</p>



<p>According to projections, Arctic temperatures could shoot up by a whopping 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) by the century's end.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-component-of-the-climate-system">Critical component of the climate system</h2>



<p>When factoring in the slowing AMOC, however, there’s a ray of hope. The study suggests that Arctic temperatures would only rise by 8 degrees Celsius (14.4 degrees Fahrenheit).</p>



<p>“The AMOC is a critical component of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-permafrost-melt-devastating-role-accelerating-global-climate-change/">climate system</a> because it moves heat around the globe,” said Yu-Chi Lee, UCR graduate student in Earth and Planetary Sciences and first author of the study. </p>



<p>“We found that its weakening reduces the amount of heat reaching the Arctic, which slows down the rate of warming.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-ecosystem-and-ocean-currents">Arctic ecosystem and ocean currents</h2>



<p>While this slowdown may marginally lessen Arctic warming, it does not eliminate all of our concerns. The study underlines persistent worries regarding Arctic ecosystems. </p>



<p>As sea ice takes a hit, polar bears face habitat loss, hindering their hunting activities and survival.</p>



<p>Plus, as the ice gives way, it reveals darker open water which soaks up more sunlight. This accelerates warming through a scenario known as the albedo effect.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-of-the-amoc-slowdown">Effects of the AMOC slowdown</h2>



<p>While the ocean current slowdown could put a damper on Arctic warming, the researchers warn of other possible climate disruptions.</p>



<p>A noteworthy concern is a potential shift in the Intertropical Convergence Zone, a tropical rain belt. </p>



<p>Should this rain belt shift southward, regions relying on its rainfall could encounter more frequent droughts - an outcome that spells trouble for agriculture and water supplies.</p>



<p>Additionally, the research clears up misconceptions linking sea ice melting to rising sea levels. When sea ice melts, it doesn't directly elevate sea levels. This is comparable to how a glass does not overflow when ice cubes in it melt.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-behind-arctic-melting">Factors behind Arctic melting</h2>



<p>The real culprits? Melting land ice, like glaciers, and water expansion as it heats up, contribute to rising sea levels. The AMOC slowdown may not heavily influence sea level rise, but it certainly stirs <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-bears-are-suffering-from-painful-ice-balls-stuck-on-their-feet/">significant changes</a> in the climate system.</p>



<p>“The AMOC slowdown may offer some temporary relief in the Arctic, but this is not a simple good-news story,” said study co-author Professor Wei Liu. “The overall impact on ecosystems and weather patterns, both in the Arctic and globally, could still be severe.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-model-simulations">Climate model simulations</h2>



<p>The researchers turned to a coupled climate model, integrating interactions between the ocean, atmosphere, land, and sea ice, to trace the AMOC's influence.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By comparing two simulations - one where the AMOC slows due to rising greenhouse gases, and another where its strength is artificially maintained - they determined how much future Arctic warming is tied to the AMOC slowdown.</p>



<p>“Our simulations allowed us to clearly see how much of the future Arctic warming is tied to the AMOC slowdown,” Lee said. "Even though the slowdown reduces warming by a couple of degrees, the overall effects on Arctic ecosystems and the global climate system remain&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-sea-ice-is-headed-toward-a-historic-low/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">severe</a>.”</p>

<p>"While the AMOC slowdown might provide some short-term benefits, its broader impacts show us that even small shifts in ocean circulation can cause ripple effects across the planet," said Lee.</p>



<p>"Climate change is far from a one-region issue. The future of the Arctic - and the world - depends on how we respond today.”</p>

<p>Ever wondered why we humans are so drawn to locking lips? A maelstrom of theories have swirled around this age-old question of when and why humans started to kiss, but the latest theory by Professor Adriano Lameira may give you pause before you lean in for that next peck.</p>



<p>Professor Lameira, an evolutionary psychologist at Warwick University, suggests that our love for kissing dates back to our furry ancestors millions of years ago. </p>



<p>They used the act of sucking with pursed lips to help remove pests from each other's fur.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-parasite-plucking-to-passionate-kissing">From parasite-plucking to passionate kissing</h2>



<p>It's a long way from lice-plucking to lip-smacking. This journey, according to Lameira, started a few million years ago when the gesture began to signify something more than simply hygienic care.</p>



<p>The humble kiss was no longer just about grooming - it began to turn into an intimate precursor to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-love-live-in-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mating</a>.</p>



<p>Professor Adriano Lameira is a respected figure in the field of evolutionary psychology and his research at <a href="https://warwick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Warwick University</a> has produced some intriguing hypotheses. </p>



<p>This latest theory, known as "the groomer's final kiss," adds an unexpected twist to the evolution of human affection.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-lice-plucking">Legacy of lice plucking</h2>



<p>In his new study, Professor Lameira views the kiss as another by-product of our fascinating evolutionary past.</p>



<p>Those gentle lip pursing actions were once the frontline in the fight against parasites, dead skin, and debris. Lameira believes that these grooming sessions, which once covered the entire body, gradually became centred around the mouth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-of-love">Evolution of love</h2>



<p>As our ancestors shed their fuzz and became less hairy, these grooming sessions predictably started shortening. The all-over groom ceased, and only the final mouth-contact stage endured, evolving into what we now recognize as kissing.</p>



<p>Professor Lameira estimates that our ancestors began using this fur-sucking technique around 7 million years ago, about the time they started moving from the treetops to the ground.</p>



<p>The transition required this form of grooming due to the increased exposure to parasites at ground level.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earliest-record-of-kissing">Earliest record of kissing</h2>



<p>Kissing apes emerged roughly 2-4 million years ago when they lost all of their fur. The earliest recorded evidence of kissing can be traced back to texts from Mesopotamia, circa 2500 BC.</p>



<p>From then until now, all forms of kissing evolved from this primordial parasite-removal technique, noted Professor Lameira.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-than-just-romance">More than just romance</h2>



<p>Today, kissing isn't just about romantic or sexual attraction. Kissing on the lips, or as the Romans referred to as the "savium," is just one part of the story.</p>



<p>The exact reasons behind kissing acquiring a sexual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dating-apps-make-it-difficult-to-find-true-love/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">connotation</a> remain more speculative. The correlation between the desire to kiss and sexual urges might need additional research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kissing-is-unique-to-humans">Kissing is unique to humans</h2>



<p>While kissing is a universal human behavior, it's interesting to note that no other members of the animal kingdom engage in this act the way we do. The slight suction movement, the protruding lips - these are uniquely human.</p>



<p>Professor Lameira suggests that the kiss has evolved into a symbol of trust and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/having-a-sense-of-purpose-makes-you-more-likely-to-find-love/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">affiliation</a>. </p>



<p>"Few natural human signals carry the symbolism and social sanctions of kissing. Evidence supports that kissing isn't a derived signal of affection in humans."</p>

<p>Earth's timeline continues to captivate humanity with ancient wonders and mysteries. Around 3.26 billion years ago, one period packed with celestial events saw the planet bombarded by meteorites. </p>



<p>The "S2" meteorite was massive, to say the least, and it continues to divulge secrets about Earth's past.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-first-oceans-and-continents">Earth's first oceans and continents</h2>



<p>Scientists often wonder, "When did the first oceans appear? What about continents? Plate tectonics? How did these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-had-major-asteroid-impact-event-tunguska-in-1908-remains-mystery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">celestial collisions</a> shape the evolution of life?"</p>



<p>A recent study focuses on the actual impact of the S2 meteorite more than three billion years ago and how that changed Earth's history, ultimately resulting in humanity, technology, and the AI that is being used to decipher the hidden clues left behind.</p>



<p>Nadja Drabon, an assistant professor at Harvard's <a href="https://eps.harvard.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences</a> led the research. Drabon is a seasoned early-Earth geologist with a near-insatiable curiosity about our planet's infancy.</p>



<p>Her interest lies in those primeval eons, when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-bacteria-age-or-are-they-immortal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-celled bacteria</a> and archaea were the solo performers on Earth, and meteoritic bombardment was the rhythm of life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-during-the-archean-eon">Earth during the Archean Eon</h2>



<p>One of the earliest chapters of Earth's history, known as the Archean Eon, spanned from about 4 billion to 2.5 billion years ago. </p>



<p>During this time, our planet was a vastly different place, with a hot, molten surface gradually cooling to form the first stable continents and oceans. The atmosphere was primarily composed of volcanic gases, lacking the oxygen we breathe today. </p>



<p>Despite these harsh conditions, life began to take root in the form of simple single-celled organisms like bacteria and archaea. </p>



<p>These early life forms thrived in the oceans, harnessing energy from chemicals and, later, from sunlight through primitive photosynthesis, which began to slowly alter the atmosphere.</p>



<p>By the end of the Archean, the slow rise in atmospheric oxygen from photosynthetic organisms set the stage for more complex life forms to appear in the following <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/the-history-of-earth-in-exactly-2000-words/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proterozoic Eon</a>. </p>



<p>So, the Archean Eon was an important time for stabilizing the planet and driving biological innovation, laying the groundwork for the amazing diversity of life we see today. </p>



<p>The question is... what role did the S2 meteorite play in this dramatic spark of life?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lage-meteorite-impacts-and-early-life">Lage meteorite impacts and early life</h2>



<p>"Large meteorite impacts must have strongly affected the habitability of the early Earth. Rocks of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rewrite-the-textbooks-life-on-earth-did-not-arise-due-to-increased-oxygen-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Archean Eon</a> record at least 16 major impact events, involving bolides larger than 10 km in diameter," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>"These impacts probably had severe, albeit temporary, consequences for surface environments. However, their effect on early life is not well understood."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-s2-meteorite-four-mount-everests-came-calling">S2 meteorite: Four Mount Everests came calling</h2>



<p>The study begins in the Barberton Greenstone belt of South Africa, where Drabon and her team traced the footprints of the S2 meteorite.</p>



<p>Their detailed analysis of sedimentology, geochemistry, and carbon isotope compositions paints a startling tableau of the cataclysmic day when a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-meteorites-can-be-traced-to-three-asteroid-families/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meteorite</a> the size of four Mount Everests crashed to Earth.</p>



<p>“Picture yourself standing off the coast of Cape Cod, in a shelf of shallow water. It’s a low-energy environment, without strong currents. Then all of a sudden, you have a giant tsunami, sweeping by and ripping up the sea floor,” said Drabon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-life-on-earth-from-s2-meteorite">Early life on Earth from S2 meteorite</h2>



<p>The S2 meteorite -- about 200 times larger than the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cosmic-equivalent-of-a-blindfolded-full-court-shot-caused-the-dinosaur-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chicxulub asteroid</a> that doomed the dinosaurs -- stirred the proverbial pot, triggering a tsunami that dispersed land debris into coastal regions.</p>



<p>The staggering heat from the impact evaporated the top layer of the ocean and heated the atmosphere. This shrouded the planet in a dense cloud of dust and temporarily halted photosynthetic activity.</p>



<p>Yet, in line with the undying spirit of life, bacterial populations bounced back. With this resurgence, came a surge in unicellular organisms that fed on phosphorus and iron.</p>



<p>A veritable feeding frenzy began. It was driven by a surge of iron from the deep oceans upwelling into shallow waters, aided by the colossal tsunami, and an influx of phosphorus caused by the meteorite and increased land erosion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meteorite-impacts-on-earth">Meteorite impacts on Earth</h2>



<p>Drabon's analysis revealed a seasonal bloom of iron-metabolizing bacteria in the immediate aftermath of the impact.</p>



<p>This iron-favoring bacterial shift serves as a crucial piece of our planetary puzzle. It showcases how complex life on Earth originated and evolved.</p>



<p>“We think of impact events as being disastrous for life,” Drabon said. “But what this study is highlighting is that these impacts would have had benefits to life, especially early on… these impacts might have actually <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nadir-crater-second-massive-asteroid-impact-discovered-dinosaur-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">allowed life to flourish</a>.”</p>



<p>Quite a paradox, isn't it? These cosmic strikes may not be the grim reapers they're often portrayed as. They could be heralds of new life.</p>

<p>Such a compelling narrative is made possible by the painstaking work of geologists like Drabon and her team. </p>



<p>Their endeavors took them to the remotest corners of the Earth, hunting for telltale chemical signatures hidden within the rocky layers of our crust. Each layer, like a page in a cosmic book, holds clues about ancient tsunamis and other cataclysmic events.</p>



<p>One such geological hotspot is the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa. It is a treasure trove of information that houses evidence of at least eight <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-impact-sparked-two-years-of-darkness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impact events</a> including S2.</p>



<p>Drabon and her team continue exploring this intriguing locale and examining Earth's riveting and meteorite-fueled history.</p>

<p>Unbeknownst to most, this silent ocean floor contains an even larger carbon reservoir than what exists as carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. </p>



<p>Yet, recent studies reveal that disturbances to the seabed disrupt this balance, releasing stored carbon and nutrients with significant climate implications. </p>



<p>We’ll explore into these findings and the delicate interplay within our planet’s carbon and nutrient cycles.</p>

<p>In a newly-published study in the field of marine ecology, scientists scrutinized the repercussions of repeated disturbances to the seabed's state of tranquility. </p>



<p>The results? It was found that these disruptions trigger the release of some of the stashed carbon and nitrogen into the ocean, multiplying the sources of harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas</a>, carbon dioxide, and escalating oxygen consumption at the seabed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-s-journey-into-the-ocean">Carbon's journey into the ocean</h2>



<p>The seabed—or sediment, as marine researchers call it—safeguards significant carbon amounts packed within organic compounds from sources like plankton, plants, and animals. Much of this organic carbon has been sitting tight in the seabed for hundreds of years, playing a crucial role in stabilizing our climate.</p>



<p>The sediment also functions as a reservoir for nutrients such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kelp-farms-could-help-clean-up-coastal-nitrogen-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen</a> and phosphorus. Some of these nutrients are attached to organic compounds, while the rest exist as dissolved nutrient salts readily available for marine organisms and larger flora. </p>



<p>"Researchers have long assumed that physical disturbances of the seabed, such as from fishing equipment like trawling, increase the conversion of organic carbon into carbon dioxide," said In the words of the study's lead scientist from <a href="https://ecos.au.dk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Aarhus University's Institute for Ecoscience</a>, Christian Lønborg.</p>



<p>"But theoretical models have lacked documentation in the form of measured values. We have now shown through laboratory experiments that this is indeed the case." These findings emphasize the seabed's crucial role in maintaining climate stability.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-laboratory-s-verdict">Laboratory's verdict</h2>



<p>In their controlled experiments spanning roughly a four-month period, with repeated disruptions of the seabed, it was observed that carbon conversion and nitrogen release amplified once the seabed was agitated into a cloud of sediment, mimicking the effects of trawling.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seabed-carbon-release">Seabed carbon release</h2>



<p>Human activities, like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/common-fishing-method-of-bottom-trawling-harms-both-the-ocean-and-the-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trawling</a> and dredging, agitate the seabed into the water column, speeding up the decomposition of organic materials and leading to the discharge of both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-based-carbon-dioxide-removal-may-not-be-effective/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon dioxide</a> and nutrients. </p>



<p>The additional carbon dioxide production, an infamous greenhouse gas, further weighs on the climate and impacts the global environment. Additionally, the release of nutrients can potentially trigger algae bloom in coastal waters. </p>



<p>As these algae produce organic carbon, this contributes to an additional deluge of carbon that needs processing at the seabed.</p>



<p>The breakdown of organic material in the water necessitates oxygen. Hence, any disruption to the seabed hastens the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cascading-oxygen-loss-could-endanger-our-oceans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">depletion of oxygen</a> in the water immediately above the seabed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seabed-impact-on-climate">Seabed impact on climate</h2>



<p>Such disturbances to the seabed can potentially lead to the widespread loss of oxygen, often seen in late summer in Danish waters.</p>



<p>"If we are to assess the impact of trawling equipment, dredging, and extraction of raw materials from the seabed, these consequences must also be considered," Lønborg notes.</p>



<p>By shedding light on these hidden triggers of climate change, we can better understand our planet's intricate natural cycles and how to prevent their disruption.</p>

<p>"But previous studies haven't probed further into the social processes through which male gender is iteratively created through an interplay between the individual and their surroundings."</p>



<p>The researchers used novel measurement techniques to explore the construction of male gender and its relationship with cardiovascular disease prevention.</p>



<p>The team used data from Add Health, a longitudinal study featuring health measurements and survey responses from over 12,300 individuals, spanning 24 years (1994-2018).</p>

<p>"When we talk about&nbsp;gender expression, we're not looking at anything physiologic that could be affected by the Y chromosome," noted Dr. Glasser.</p>

<p>The study revealed that men who expressed more typical gender behaviors were significantly less likely to report receiving professional communication about certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-blood-test-accurately-predicts-cardiovascular-heart-disease-risk-30-years-into-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a> risk factors.</p>



<p>These men were also less likely to report undergoing treatment for these conditions, even after receiving diagnoses.</p>

<p>New research reveals another surprising impact of human activity on the environment: New Zealand's native stoneflies have changed color due to human-induced changes.</p>



<p>The study, recently published in the journal <em>Science</em>, hails from the University of Otago. It reveals without a shadow of a doubt that humans are driving animal evolution.</p>

<p>The study was led by Professor Jon Waters, an expert in the Department of Zoology. He noted that the stonefly has become a different color due to recent deforestation.</p>

<p>“In natural forested regions, a native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-boost-plant-evolution-in-surprising-ways/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species</a> has evolved ‘warning’ colors that mimic those of a poisonous forest species, to trick predators into thinking they are poisonous too," said Professor Waters.</p>



<p>“But the removal of forests since humans arrived has removed the poisonous species. As a result, in deforested regions the mimicking species has abandoned this strategy - as there is nothing to mimic - instead evolving into a different color.”</p>



<p>The game plan takes a drastic turn with humans in the picture. The deforestation that followed human arrival ousted the poisonous species. </p>



<p>The species that the stoneflies mimicked no longer existed. Faced with this reality, the mimicking species abandoned its old strategy.  </p>



<p>So, in a remarkable demonstration of adaptability, the stoneflies evolved into a different color. </p>

<p>Humans stand tall and walk with a sense of achievement, but this ability took millions of years to develop. Our ancient ancestors crawled like reptiles before evolving into our upright posture. What caused this posture evolution?</p>



<p>Dr. Peter Bishop and Professor Stephanie Pierce from Harvard are using computer simulations and fossils to share their findings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-to-upright-posture">Evolution to upright posture</h2>



<p>It would be a simple and straightforward tale if our ancestors just one day decided to stand up straight and never look back. But <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammal-evolution-kicked-off-with-daring-experiments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolution</a>, the researchers discovered, is far from a linear journey.</p>



<p>After scrutinizing the biomechanics of various modern species and eight exemplary fossil species spanning 300 million years, they found dynamics that are more thrilling than a sci-fi movie.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-journey-to-modern-posture">The journey to modern posture</h2>



<p>In order to make sense of the evolutionary changes in posture, our researchers took a closer look at some modern analogs, including the sprawled tegu lizard, semi-upright alligator, and upright greyhound. </p>



<p>In their own words, understanding how current creatures move and stand offers a fascinating glimpse into how posture <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mammals-have-evolved-over-66-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolved over time</a>.</p>



<p>Moving from the present to the past, the researchers cast their eyes on eight fossil species from four continents, each representing a different epoch.</p>



<p>From the tiny proto-mammal Megazostrodon to the mammoth Ophiacodon, they used advanced digital biomechanical models to unravel the secrets of locomotion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-locomotion-of-species"> Locomotion of species</h2>



<p>“By first studying these modern species, we greatly improved our understanding of how an animal’s anatomy relates to the way it stands and moves,” said Bishop. </p>



<p>“We could then put it into an evolutionary context of how posture and gait actually changed from early synapsids through to modern mammals.”<br><br>Dr. Bishop noted that the amount of force that a limb can apply to the ground is a critical determinant of locomotor performance in animals.</p>



<p>“If you cannot produce sufficient force in a given direction when it’s needed, you won’t be able to run as fast, turn as quickly, or worse still, you could well fall over.”</p>



<p>To better understand the factors behind mammals posture evolution, the researchers utilized a three-dimensional "feasible force space" that encapsulates the overall performance of a limb.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transition-to-upright-posture">Transition to upright posture</h2>



<p>Armed with this biomechanical data, Dr. Bishop and Professor Pierce from <a href="https://oeb.harvard.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard's Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology</a> discovered that the evolutionary transition to an upright posture was a rollercoaster ride. </p>



<p>Instead of a simple progression from sprawling to upright, they found that locomotor performance peaked and dipped over millions of years. </p>



<p>Some ancient species showed flexibility. They were able to switch between more sprawled or upright postures, like today's versatile alligators and crocodiles.</p>



<p>These findings help to clarify some peculiarities seen in fossils. For example, they may explain why many early mammal ancestors had asymmetric hands, feet, and limb joints, traits more associated with sprawling postures.</p>



<p>The experts noted that, unlike modern placentals and marsupials found lying on their side, early mammal ancestors were often found in a splayed pose.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-in-reverse">Evolution in reverse</h2>



<p>“The picture is emerging that the full complement of quintessentially therian traits was assembled over a complex and prolonged period, with the full suite attained relatively late in synapsid history,” said Professor Pierce.</p>



<p>Furthermore, the study hints at evolution's susceptibility to chance events and mass extinctions.</p>



<p>For example, the Permian-Triassic mass extinction - a catastrophe that eliminated 90% of life - seemingly influenced the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/jaw-dropping-mammal-evolution-discovery-fills-in-more-blanks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evolutionary path</a> of synapsids and forced a postural shift back towards sprawled poses.</p>

<p>The research examines how the footprints of ancient creatures provide compelling evidence of posture evolution. </p>

<p>The Earth is heating up, and the clock is ticking. According to a new report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Earth is on track for a global temperature rise of 3.1°C by the end of this century.</p>



<p>This isn't just an abstract number. It's the difference between a livable future and a world in crisis. If humanity wants to avoid a catastrophic level of global warming, drastic emission cuts must be made now.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.unep.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a>'s latest annual report pulls no punches. It's a reminder of the urgent action that is needed to keep global warming to a manageable 1.5°C.</p>

<p>In the forthcoming UN Cop29 talks in Baku, Azerbaijan, nations will wrestle with hard choices. It's a high-stakes meeting as countries seek to push up the ante on climate action strategies, particularly by ensuring financial aid for developing countries to combat climate change and shrink emission gaps.</p>



<p>"Either leaders bridge the emissions gap, or we plunge headlong into climate disaster - with the poorest and most vulnerable suffering the most," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.</p>



<p>In no uncertain terms, Guterres clarified the options: countries either close the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions gap</a> or zip towards a climate disaster with those living on the edge paying the highest toll.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-paris-treaty-and-global-temperatures">Paris treaty and global temperatures </h2>



<p>In the 2015 Paris Agreement, countries around the globe pledged to limit temperature rise to well under 2°C, with a more ambitious goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial times.</p>



<p>While 1.5°C is still a risky bet, it's considered the line in the sand beyond which we will face the most severe impacts of climate change.</p>



<p>The UNEP report noted that global greenhouse gases keep climbing with a 1.3% increase in 2023 from the 2022 levels. The experts also found that G20 nations are behind 77% of the emissions.</p>



<p>If present policies continue, the planet is headed toward global warming of 3.1°C. Even if countries stick to their climate action plans until 2030, the Earth is looking at temperature rises of 2.6°C-2.8°C. The problem is that most countries aren't hitting their markers for these plans.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strategies-to-limit-temperature-rise">Strategies to limit temperature rise </h2>



<p>So, what's the battle plan for saving the Earth from catastrophic levels of global warming? UNEP has some ideas. The first step is for nations to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 and 57% by 2035.</p>



<p>These aren't arbitrary numbers. These reductions are scientifically feasible through a significant increase in renewable energy capacity, improving energy efficiency, and moving away from fossil fuels.</p>



<p>The plan also involves protecting and restoring natural habitats like forests and mangroves, which play a vital role in trapping carbon.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgency-of-reducing-emissions">Urgency of reducing emissions</h2>



<p>Antonio Guterres didn't hold back when laying out the harsh reality people face if they keep going down this path.</p>



<p>"We need global mobilization on a scale and pace never seen before – starting right now, before the next round of climate pledges – or the 1.5°C goal will soon be dead and well below 2°C will take its place in the intensive care unit," Guterres said.</p>



<p>He highlighted the urgency of decreasing greenhouse gas <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/report-earth-is-headed-for-an-irreversible-climate-disaster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a>, breaking fossil fuel addiction, accelerating renewable energy adoption, and ending deforestation.</p>



<p>Guterres also discussed setting new financial targets for Cop29 to release significant funds for developing countries to fight climate change.</p>

<p>The pistachio is often a snack mindlessly munched on while watching TV. The nut has a new trick up its shell causing scientists to see it in a new light. A recent study revealed an impressive new feature of this petite powerhouse. Pistachios may support and enhance vision and overall eye health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pistachios-and-eyes">Pistachios and eyes</h2>



<p>Researchers from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at <a href="https://nutrition.tufts.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tufts University</a> discovered these tasty nuts contain lutein, a plant pigment that benefits the eyes.</p>



<p>The study pinpointed that a daily helping of pistachios significantly impacts macular pigment optical density (MPOD), a key factor in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-ai-could-protect-millions-of-people-from-vision-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eye health</a>.</p>



<p>Do eyes need lutein? The short answer is, yes. Eyes are exposed to harsh visible light and need lutein to guard against potential damage, particularly during aging. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crunchy-findings">Crunchy findings</h2>



<p>The Tufts' study took healthy middle-aged to older adults and added 2 ounces (about 56.7 grams) of pistachios to their daily diet. </p>



<p>After 12 weeks, the pistachios significantly bumped up MPOD. This is a positive sign of healthy eyes and could reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). </p>



<p>AMD is a common ailment for many older adults and leads to significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blinking-plays-crucial-role-vision-human-perception/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vision</a> loss.</p>



<p>Many people grapple with numerous health concerns as they age. A national poll by the <a href="https://www.afb.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">American Foundation for the Blind</a> showed Americans dread vision loss. These results might provide a new ray of hope.</p>

<p>Once a person cracks open a pistachio, they unlock numerous benefits. Study participants saw a noticeable rise in MPOD levels in just 6 weeks of pistachio consumption. </p>

<p>“Our findings indicate that pistachios are not only a nutritious snack, but they may also provide significant benefits for eye health,” said Dr. Tammy Scott, a research and clinical neuropsychologist and lead author of the study. </p>



<p>“This is especially important as people age and face higher risks of vision impairment.”</p>

<p>Scott explained the participants who had low lutein saw a quick enhancement in their blood lutein levels in six weeks by adding 2 ounces of pistachios to their diet daily.</p>



<p>“By simply incorporating a handful of pistachios into your diet, you can improve your <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-carrots-and-colorful-veggies-really-can-improve-your-eyesight/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intake of lutein</a>, which is crucial for protecting your eyes,” Scott said.</p>



<p>This dietary adjustment provided a crucial boost to eye health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brilliance-of-pistachios">Brilliance of pistachios</h2>



<p>Pistachios are good for the eyes and packed with nutrients that support overall health.</p>

<p>Photosynthesis is the foundation of all life on Earth, and the reason that we exist. However, because its efficiency rate of converting light energy into chemical energy is only 1%, there's room for improvement. That's where a brilliant new invention called "electro-agriculture" comes in.</p>



<p>Some talented bioengineers suggest an alternative to photosynthesis which promises much improved energy conversion through electro-agriculture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electro-agriculture-for-food-production">Electro-agriculture for food production</h2>



<p>What if plants could be genetically modified to "consume" an organic molecule produced by a solar-powered chemical reaction that converts CO2 more efficiently than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-microalgae-show-photosynthesis-is-possible-in-near-darkness/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>?</p>



<p>The idea is that with electro-agriculture, our reliance on land will decrease drastically. Imagine this: a 94% reduction in land needed for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-and-agriculture-are-locked-in-a-destructive-feedback-loop/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agriculture</a> if all food in the US were produced using this method.</p>



<p>This could even solve the tricky problem of food production in space. With less dependence on sunlight and traditional agricultural fields, we’re looking at a future of multi-story buildings growing our food using electro-agriculture principles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harvesting-sunshine-via-electro-agriculture">Harvesting sunshine via electro-agriculture</h2>



<p>The soul and stature of this head-turning proposal are scientists Robert Jinkerson from <a href="https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California</a>, Riverside and Feng Jiao from <a href="https://washu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington University</a> in St. Louis.</p>



<p>Jinkerson, a biological engineer, talks about moving agriculture to the next phase of technology, one that steps away from nature and takes advantage of controlled indoor environments through electro-agriculture.</p>



<p>Solar panels would be placed on or close to these multi-story buildings. These panels would absorb the sun's radiation, powering a chemical reaction between CO2 and water, and producing acetate which is central in electro-agriculture.</p>



<p>Acetate, a molecule similar to the main component in vinegar, would then be used as food for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-carbon-footprint-urban-farms-and-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydroponically grown plants</a>. </p>



<p>And, why just plants? Acetate is also consumed naturally by food-producing organisms like mushrooms, yeast, and algae.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vinegar-for-plants">Vinegar for plants</h2>



<p>Jiao, an electrochemist, tells us that this new process already has an efficiency of about 4%. That's a four-fold increase compared to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>. </p>



<p>And the smaller CO2 footprint associated with electro-agriculture <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-food-day-fighting-global-hunger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food production</a>? How would the plants eat the acetate? </p>



<p>The scientists are exploiting a metabolic pathway that sprouting plants use to break down food, turning it back on for full-grown plants to consume acetate as a source of energy, which is the gist of electro-agriculture.</p>



<p>“We're trying to turn this pathway back on in adult plants and reawaken their native ability to utilize acetate,” says Jinkerson. </p>



<p>“It's analogous to lactose intolerance in humans -- as babies we can digest lactose in milk, but for many people that pathway is turned off when they grow up. It's kind of the same idea, only for plants.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-environmental-implications">Environmental implications</h2>



<p>The transformation from traditional agricultural practices to electro-agriculture is not just about feeding more people efficiently; it carries profound potential benefits for the environment. </p>



<p>Conventional farming methods often lead to significant deforestation, which is a major contributor to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity loss and climate change</a>.</p>



<p>By drastically reducing the amount of land required for crop production, electro-agriculture presents an opportunity to reverse some of the ecological damage caused by clearing land for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-footprint-a-new-frontier-in-sustainable-farming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">agriculture</a>. </p>



<p>Moreover, with its reduced reliance on fertilizers and pesticides, which can contaminate waterways and impact aquatic ecosystems, this innovative approach offers a promising alternative towards more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-food-systems-are-gaining-momentum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sustainable food</a> production methods.</p>



<p>Embracing electro-agriculture could facilitate the gradual restoration of natural habitats, enhancing biodiversity and contributing to a more resilient planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-electro-agriculture">Future of electro-agriculture</h2>



<p>Despite the huge potential of electro-agriculture, significant challenges remain. One key issue is the initial setup cost and maintenance of solar-powered chemical reactors, as well as the infrastructure needed to support large-scale indoor <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmers-adopt-regenerative-agriculture-better-soil-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">farming facilities</a>.</p>



<p>Additionally, there is a need for further research to understand the long-term impacts on plant physiology when relying on acetate as a primary energy source. </p>



<p>The genetic modification of plants to reinstate certain metabolic pathways could also face regulatory and public acceptance hurdles.</p>



<p>Furthermore, while current efficiency outpaces traditional photosynthesis, there is always room for improvement as technology advances. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimpse-into-the-future">Glimpse into the future</h2>



<p>While the research is still in initial stages focusing on tomatoes and lettuce, there are plans of expanding it to staple high-calorie crops like sweet potatoes, cassava, and grains. </p>



<p>The scientists have already succeeded in engineering plants that can use acetate in addition to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/details-photosynthesis-water-viewed-atomic-level-cryo-microscope/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photosynthesis</a>.</p>



<p>“For plants, we're still in the research-and-development phase of trying to get them to utilize acetate as their carbon source, because plants have not evolved to grow this way, but we’re making progress,” says Jinkerson. </p>



<p>“Mushrooms and yeast and algae, however, can be grown like this today, so I think that those applications could be commercialized first, and plants will come later down the line.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance">Study significance</h2>



<p>The scientists, undoubtedly, are keen on refining the acetate production method to make the carbon-fixation system even more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-farming-practices-boost-soil-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">efficient</a>. </p>



<p>“This is just the first step for this research, and I think there's a hope that its efficiency and cost will be significantly improved in the near future,” says Jiao.</p>



<p>To sum it all up, electro-agriculture is an exciting frontier in food production technology. If successful, it promises to be an environmentally friendly and space-efficient method that could revolutionize the concept of food production itself.</p>



<p>Jinkerson and Jiao remain optimistic, positioned at the forefront of electro-agriculture, and stress the importance of continued interdisciplinary collaboration.</p>



<p>As their research progresses, they envision not only overcoming these challenges but also refining electro-agriculture into a universally sustainable, accessible, and adaptable method of food production.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>

<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

<p>The first wave of changes occurs around age 44, affecting molecules related to alcohol metabolism, caffeine processing, lipid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/age-related-changes-in-metabolism-dont-match-our-expectations/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">metabolism</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cardiovascular disease</a>, and skin and muscle function. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>



<p>Scientists discovered that blood vessels, particularly the aorta, age fastest among all body tissues. This vascular aging may drive aging in other body parts, highlighting cardiovascular health's central role in the aging process.</p>

<p>Aging research has seen notable advances in 2025. Harvard Medical School scientists developed chemical cocktails that reverse cellular aging without genetic modification. Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
