<p>Strength training often brings to mind toned arms and powerful legs. But new research suggests that the benefits extend much further. Lifting weights may also reshape the trillions of microbes living in our gut, which influence everything from metabolism to immunity.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/studies-learn-the-exact-amount-of-time-you-should-spend-training-to-build-muscle/">gut</a> microbiome is closely linked to both health and aging. Inside of it are microbes like <em>Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, </em>and<em> Roseburia hominis</em>. These tiny organisms produce short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and ease inflammation.</p>



<p>Endurance activities like running or cycling are known to boost these helpful microbes. But when it comes to resistance training, the picture has remained far less clear.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-past-studies">Conflicting past studies</h2>



<p>Until recently, research painted a mixed picture. Some trials found that weight training shifted microbial communities, while others reported almost no changes. </p>



<p>Matthieu Clauss of the <a href="https://www.nih.no/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian School of Sport Sciences</a> in Oslo noted that the existing research remains limited.</p>



<p>To settle this uncertainty, Sven Nahnsen and colleagues at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> studied 150 sedentary adults. Participants engaged in an eight-week resistance program using advanced machines that adjusted loads in real time and tracked every lift.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-strength-and-gut-microbes">Tracking strength and gut microbes</h2>



<p>This digital system created detailed performance records while ensuring progressive, individualized training. Stool samples collected before, during, and after the program allowed researchers to map microbial changes.</p>



<p>When researchers looked at the whole group, they saw no clear changes in microbial diversity. The story shifted, however, once strength gains came into focus. </p>



<p>Participants who made the biggest improvements showed noticeable rises in <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia hominis</em>. In fact, these microbes were especially abundant in individuals who gained far more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strength-training-may-be-the-best-exercise-for-insomnia/">strength</a> than everyone else.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microbes-differ-in-strong-lifters">Microbes differ in strong lifters</h2>



<p>The study revealed clear differences between high and low responders. The strongest gains were linked with distinct changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natures-sweet-remedy-honey-is-a-microbial-marvel/">microbial</a> composition.</p>



<p>High performers also showed enrichment of members of the Lachnospiraceae family, many of which are linked to anti-inflammatory effects.</p>



<p>Notably, an amplicon sequence variant classified as <em>Roseburia hominis</em> showed the most significant increase in high responders by week eight.</p>



<p>Other enriched microbes included <em>Bacteroides massiliensis</em> and certain <em>Prevotellaceae</em>. Meanwhile, taxa like <em>Lachnoclostridium</em> and <em>Oscillospiraceae</em> declined.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gut-shifts-depend-on-training-progress">Gut shifts depend on training progress</h2>



<p>Why do only some people experience these changes? <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weight-training-shields-the-aging-brain-from-dementia/">Training</a> compliance was similar, and diet surveys showed no clear differences. </p>



<p>This suggests factors beyond effort or food intake. One possibility is that microbial shifts themselves supported muscle gains by increasing production of short-chain fatty acids, which enhance energy metabolism and recovery.</p>



<p>Resistance training did not increase overall microbial richness (alpha diversity), unlike endurance training, but it did remodel microbial composition (beta diversity) in high responders. </p>



<p>This points to a dose-response effect: only when strength improvements cross a certain threshold do microbiome shifts emerge.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lifting-and-running-converge">Lifting and running converge</h2>



<p>Despite differences between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-running-can-help-you-move-think-and-feel-better/">running</a> and lifting, both exercise types seem to converge on similar microbial outcomes. </p>



<p>Enriched short-chain fatty acid producers like <em>Faecalibacterium</em> and <em>Roseburia</em> suggest common pathways that support gut integrity, regulate glucose, and reduce systemic inflammation.</p>



<p>The changes occurred without dietary modification, meaning resistance training alone can act as a driver of gut remodeling. This highlights its role not only for musculoskeletal health but also for metabolic and immune regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exercise-benefits-are-clear">Exercise benefits are clear</h2>



<p>Some mysteries remain. Stool metabolomics showed no significant changes, which may indicate that functional shifts were subtle, localized, or required longer adaptation. </p>



<p>The study also lacked a non-exercising control group, leaving room for further confirmation.</p>



<p>Even so, outside experts remain hopeful. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-reduces-depression-and-anxiety-in-children-and-teens-with-mental-health-issues/">exercise</a> of any kind can benefit gut health. They also point to the possibility that resistance training sparks unique, health-related shifts in the microbiome.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-strength-training-as-gut-medicine">Strength training as gut medicine</h2>



<p>From a public health perspective, resistance training may offer far more than toned muscles. It could serve as a non-drug approach to improving gut health, especially for people facing chronic inflammation or the challenges of aging.</p>



<p>The changes happening inside the gut are striking. Beneficial microbes increase, the gut lining becomes stronger, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fasting-helps-the-body-fight-inflammation-and-chronic-diseases/">inflammation</a> settles down. These microbes also help regulate blood sugar and energy use, lowering the risk of long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive problems.</p>



<p>What makes this especially interesting is that participants did not need to change their diets. The exercise itself appeared to reshape the gut community, suggesting that strength training works as its own form of medicine.</p>



<p>For many, this shifts how we think about working out. Exercise is not only about muscles or appearance - it is about keeping the body resilient from within. Regular resistance training might help people recover faster, age more gracefully, and carry less risk of disease throughout life.</p>

<p>The earth is no stranger to temperature fluctuations, but our planet's icy crown, Greenland, is currently experiencing warming that surpasses global averages. </p>



<p>This accelerated warming has consequences beyond its ice-capped edges, affecting sea levels worldwide and threatening coastal ecosystems.</p>



<p>But why is Greenland warming at a faster rate than its planetary peers? It's a mystery that a group of intrepid researchers from South Korea set out to solve.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-trends-in-greenland">Warming trends in Greenland</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-influences-us-weather-patterns-ai-machine-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic Amplification</a>, the phenomenon of intensified warming in northern regions, is a growing threat to Greenland's frozen landscapes.</p>



<p>Past research has associated this occurrence with various factors, including local climate feedback processes, temperature boosts from the Arctic Ocean, and heat transport from the south. </p>



<p>As summer's warmth melts sea ice, less sunlight is reflected back into space, further fueling this warming cycle -- a process known as surface albedo feedback. Yet, the precise causes of specific, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme temperature events</a> have often been overlooked.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-fresh-perspective">A fresh perspective</h2>



<p>Enter Professor Kyung-Ja Ha from <a href="https://www.pusan.ac.kr/eng/Main.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pusan National University</a>, South Korea, and her team of climate sleuths. </p>



<p>The group, including Manuel Tobias Blau from Pusan National University, and Dr. Eui-Seok Chung from the Division of Atmospheric Sciences at <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korea Polar Research Institute</a>, studied Greenland's mysterious warming trends from 1979 to 2021.</p>



<p>The team's work was underpinned by a surface energy budget framework, which separates the influence of radiative and non-radiative sources on temperature anomalies. </p>



<p>Their research illuminated two main culprits behind Greenland's temperature surge: an increase in clear-sky downwelling longwave radiation and a resultant effect on surface albedo feedback.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-domino-effect-of-greenland-s-warming">Domino effect of Greenland's warming</h2>



<p>Through their investigations, the researchers discovered that the primary driver for the increase in clear-sky radiation was a rise in atmospheric temperature. </p>



<p>When warmer years rolled around, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-regions-are-rapidly-warming-with-global-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heightened surface temperatures</a> teamed up with tropospheric warming to stir up turbulent heat exchange between the atmosphere and the surface.</p>



<p>The aftershock of this process stretched far and wide, boosting moisture transport from the south to Greenland. </p>



<p>This event sparked the formation of a high-pressure system, akin to a blocking anticyclone, which effectively trapped and maintained the warm conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-melting-result">Ice-melting result</h2>



<p>As this high-pressure system took hold, Greenland was plunged into a cycle of intense ice melting. This, in turn, intensified the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-transformation-ice-melt-plant-growth-vegetation-cascading-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming effects</a> -- a troubling feedback loop.</p>



<p>Adding complexity to this climate puzzle, modes of natural climate variability, particularly those linked to the blocking index, could either exacerbate or counteract these warming trends leading to extreme temperature events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-on-future-climates">Impact on future climates</h2>



<p>"In this study, we focused on the year-to-year perturbations of the surface energy budget to explain Greenland’s extreme temperature," says Prof. Ha. The results have broad implications for our future if left unchecked. </p>



<p>"The extreme summer temperature over Greenland will further accelerate the ice sheet melting, leading to rapid sea level rise,” Prof. Ha warns.</p>



<p>This important research offers key insights into the causes of Greenland's extreme summer temperatures, highlighting the importance and urgency of implementing strategies to prevent further degradation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-activity-and-greenland-warming">Human activity and Greenland warming</h2>



<p>While natural phenomena certainly play a part in the climate dynamics affecting Greenland, human activity cannot be overlooked. </p>



<p>The burning of fossil fuels has significantly increased greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming.</p>



<p>As temperatures rise globally, the Arctic suffers disproportionately. A spike in carbon dioxide and methane emissions heightens the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/runaway-greenhouse-effect-could-turn-earth-into-an-uninhabitable-hell/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse effect</a>, trapping more heat in the atmosphere and exacerbating the thermal shifts observed in Greenland.</p>



<p>The intricate relationship between anthropogenic influences and natural climate systems highlights the critical need for comprehensive climate policies that address both local and global factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-path-forward">Path forward</h2>



<p>Given the urgency of the situation, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change in Greenland and beyond. </p>



<p>Enhanced monitoring and research initiatives, as spearheaded by Professor Ha and her team, will be crucial for informing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-loss-tracked-by-new-gps-system-on-a-daily-basis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">effective response strategies</a>. </p>



<p>Collaborative efforts between nations, scientists, and policymakers can lead to the development of adaptive measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting vulnerable ecosystems. </p>



<p>By prioritizing sustainability and resilience, we can work towards a future where the delicate balance of our planet’s climate is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenlands-melting-icebergs-may-not-be-threat-to-ocean-currents-amoc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preserved</a> for generations to come.</p>

Greenland is warming and melting much faster than the rest of the world

<p>How does one species evolve into two? For biologists, this is a complex question. The general agreement is that speciation, the process by which new species arise, usually occurs when individuals from a single population become geographically isolated. Over time, this separation leads to the loss of interbreeding ability.</p>



<p>However, a new study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2024.0591" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences</em></a> explores a less common form of speciation. Instead of being separated by physical barriers like mountains or oceans, members of a species can become separated in time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-speciation-in-closely-related-moths">Speciation in closely related moths</h2>



<p>The researchers focused on the genes of two closely related <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moths-may-struggle-to-move-in-response-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moth</a> species that coexist in the southeastern United States.</p>



<p>“These two are very similar,” said lead author Yash Sondhi, who conducted research for the study while at Florida International University and later at the Florida Museum of Natural History. “They’ve differentiated along this one axis, which is when they fly.”</p>



<p>The rosy maple moth, belonging to the genus <em>Dryocampa</em>, looks like something out of a surreal dream, with its thick mane of fur and vibrant strawberry and banana taffy-colored scales. Both male and female rosy maple moths are nocturnal, flying exclusively at night.</p>



<p>In contrast, the pink-striped oakworm moth, from the genus <em>Anisota</em>, sports more subdued tones of ochre, umber, and marl. While females of this species are active at dusk and early evening, the males prefer to fly during the day.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-color-vision-and-clock-genes">Color vision and clock genes</h2>



<p>Sondhi, who specializes in insect vision biology, knew from previous research that these two genera, <em>Dryocampa</em> and <em>Anisota</em>, diverged from a common ancestor around 3.8 million years ago - a relatively recent split in evolutionary terms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The <em>Anisota</em> genus includes several species, all of which are diurnal (active during the day). The nocturnal rosy maple moth is the only species in the <em>Dryocampa</em> genus.</p>



<p>Seeing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bella-moths-use-toxins-to-deter-predators-and-attract-mates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">moths</a> as an ideal opportunity to study how vision evolves when a species changes its activity pattern, Sondhi set out to find differences in their color vision. However, the results took an unexpected turn.</p>



<p>“I went in looking for differences in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/colorful-primates-oddly-enough-dont-have-great-color-vision/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">color vision</a>. Instead, we found differences in their clock genes, which in hindsight makes sense,” Sondhi explained.</p>



<p>Clock genes regulate the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/syncing-brain-muscle-circadian-rhythms-slows-aging/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">circadian rhythms</a> in plants and animals, influencing a wide range of biological processes such as metabolism, cell growth, blood pressure, and body temperature over roughly 24-hour cycles.</p>



<p>For any organism that shifts its activity pattern, clock genes are almost certainly involved. “It’s a system that’s been retained in everything from fruit flies to mammals and plants. They all have some kind of time-keeping mechanism,” Sondhi noted.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-moth-genes-dedicated-to-smell-and-vision">Moth genes dedicated to smell and vision</h2>



<p>To investigate this, Sondhi compared the transcriptomes of the two moth species. Unlike genomes, which contain an organism’s complete DNA, transcriptomes include only the active genetic material used to produce proteins, making them useful for examining differences in protein levels throughout the day.</p>

<p>As anticipated, Sondhi discovered several genes expressed at different levels in the two species. The nocturnal rosy maple moths invested more in their sense of smell, while the diurnal oakworm moths produced more genes related to vision.</p>



<p>However, there were no significant differences in the genes responsible for color vision. This doesn’t necessarily mean their color vision is identical, but if differences exist, they likely involve tuning and sensitivity rather than changes in the gene structure itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-the-disco-gene">The role of the disco gene</h2>



<p>One gene, in particular, stood out: <em>disconnected</em>, or <em>disco</em>, was expressed differently during the day and night in both species. </p>



<p>In fruit flies, <em>disco</em> indirectly influences circadian rhythms by producing neurons that transmit clock enzymes from the brain to the body.</p>

<p>The <em>disco</em> gene in the moth samples was twice the size of its fruit fly counterpart and contained additional zinc fingers -- active gene segments that interact directly with DNA, RNA, and proteins. </p>



<p>Sondhi speculated that changes in the <em>disco</em> gene could be partly responsible for the rosy maple moth’s nocturnal behavior.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evolution-in-action">Evolution in action</h2>



<p>When Sondhi compared the <em>disco</em> gene between the two moth species, he found 23 mutations that distinguished them. </p>



<p>These mutations occurred in active portions of the gene, suggesting they likely contribute to the physical differences between the species. Sondhi realized he was witnessing evolution in action.</p>



<p>“If this is functionally confirmed, this is a really concrete example of the mechanism behind how they speciated at the molecular level, which is rare to come by,” he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-at-broader-biological-patterns-nbsp">Looking at broader biological patterns<strong>&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The study also&nbsp; highlights the importance of broadening our understanding of how life evolves and sustains itself. When genetics first became a field of study, researchers concentrated on a few model species, such as fruit flies and lab mice, for the sake of simplicity and expedience.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, this narrow focus limits our knowledge of broader biological patterns. Just as humans are not lab mice, moths are not fruit flies.</p>



<p>“As species continue to decline due to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterflies-and-moths-are-struggling-to-adapt-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> and other anthropogenic changes, we’ll need to genetically engineer a greater number of the ones that remain to enable drought tolerance, for example, or to be active in light-polluted regimes,” said Sondhi.&nbsp;</p>



<p>‘To do that consistently, having a broader pool of functionally characterized genes across organisms is crucial. We can’t just use <em>Drosophila</em>.”</p>

New research suggests a thrilling and somewhat enigmatic twist to the traditional narrative on woolly mammoths extinction.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-enigma-of-wrangel-island">Enigma of Wrangel island</h2>



<p>Our story begins on Wrangel Island, off the coast of Siberia. This secluded set-up was home to the last of these incredible beasts. </p>



<p>Such isolation might naturally lead us to believe these mammoths became victims of inbreeding -- the detrimental result of offspring from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/end-of-an-era-woolly-mammoth-remains-tell-an-intriguing-story/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">closely related species</a>. However, new studies fundamentally challenge this presumption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-to-woolly-mammoth-extinction">Clues to woolly mammoth extinction</h2>



<p>But before we take that plunge into research, it's worth understanding the implications of extinction. When a species fades into oblivion, we lose an integral part of our world's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammoth-remains-found-in-deadly-quicksand-trap/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biological diversity</a>. It's a shattering domino effect that puts so many other lives in jeopardy.</p>



<p>According to one study, it's confirmed that these last mammoths were indeed inbred. However, contrary to popular belief, inbreeding wasn't their downfall. </p>

<p>This study is “remarkable,” says paleontologist Joshua Miller, a paleontologist from the <a href="https://www.uc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cincinnati</a>. Though Miller did not participate in the research, he acknowledges its significance. </p>



<p>According to him, it not only unravels the mystery behind Wrangel Island's woolly mammoths but also provides insights on preserving endangered species today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-toolbox">Genetic toolbox</h2>



<p>“Genetic variation is the general toolbox that animals have in order to adapt to changes in the environment,” explains Love Dalén, an evolutionary geneticist. Every species needs a well-equipped toolbox to adapt to environmental changes.</p>



<p>This toolbox becomes significantly less versatile when there's inbreeding within isolated groups. The resultant gene variation could eventually lead to disease and death, thus paving the way for extinction.</p>



<p>Historically, many scientists have claimed this "meltdown model" was responsible for the extinction of mammoths. </p>



<p>But Dalén and his colleagues have been challenging this theory for over a decade, and their latest evidence stands firmly in their corner.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciphering-woolly-mammoth-dna">Deciphering woolly mammoth DNA</h2>



<p>The team has been collecting woolly mammoth remains from Wrangel Island and Siberia. They've extracted each animal's complete DNA set and analyzed 21 of those genomes. </p>



<p>What they've found is that the most harmful mutations became less common over time, possibly because carriers of these mutations didn't reproduce.</p>

<p>What makes this discovery even more intriguing is that the team couldn't retrieve high-quality DNA from the final generations of Wrangel Island mammoths. So, their last moments continue to be shrouded in mystery.</p>



<p>“Maybe they were just unlucky,” says Dalén. If some unexpected calamity hadn't struck Wrangel Island, who knows, we might have had mammoths strolling around today.</p>

Let's journey back in time, precisely about four thousand years...

<p>The tranquil waters of the Pacific Ocean are revealing a disturbing truth. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently reported that the sea levels in the vast Pacific Ocean are climbing faster than the global average, raising alarm bells for low-lying island nations. </p>



<p>But why is the Pacific experiencing this accelerated ascension, and why should it concern us?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-threat-of-pacific-sea-levels">Rising threat of Pacific sea levels</h2>



<p>Certainly, the planet-wide advance of sea levels is no secret. Higher temperatures, provoked by continual fossil fuel combustion, are causing the once-mighty ice sheets to melt while the warmer oceans cause expanding water molecules. </p>



<p>This global average rise measures up to about 3.4 millimeters per year over the past three decades. However, Pacific's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-ocean-warming-four-times-faster-than-global-average/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rising sea level</a> situation is even more worrying.</p>



<p>In comparison with this global average, two measurement areas in the Pacific, north and east of Australia, show an average annual increase that outpaces the rest. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-factor-in-pacific-s-sea-levels">Human factor in Pacific's sea levels</h2>



<p>The startling findings were revealed in the <a href="https://wmo.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WMO</a>'s regional State of the Climate report 2023. The report was released to coincide with the gathering of climate-conscious individuals in a forum in the island nation of Tonga.</p>



<p>Humans play a significant part in this tale. WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo confirmed this by stating that human activities have weakened the ocean's capacity to protect us. </p>



<p>Through sea level rise, we are converting the ocean - a once faithful ally - into a growing threat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unexpected-surge">An unexpected surge</h2>



<p>A surge in coastal flooding since 1980, with recurring events in islands like the Cook Islands and French Polynesia, marks another concerning consequence of these rising sea levels. </p>



<p>Limited previously to a few instances annually, these events threaten to become commonplace now. But what triggers these?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cyclones-and-climate-change">Cyclones and climate change</h2>



<p>Tropical cyclones, suspected to be intensifying due to climate change, often cause such floods. As sea surface temperatures increase, the Pacific region observed over 34 such storms and floods in 2023. These hazards resulted in more than 200 fatalities, as per the WMO report.</p>



<p>Only a third of small island developing states have early warning systems, as per the WMO, highlighting a significant area of concern. With the average elevation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pacific-northwest-ecosystems-are-being-tested-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pacific islands</a> being just one to two meters above sea level, the risk posed by rising water levels is alarmingly high.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-battle-against-rising-sea-levels">Battle against rising sea levels</h2>



<p>These urgent warnings have not gone unheard. A memorable moment unfolded in 2021, when Tuvalu's foreign minister addressed the U.N. climate conference standing knee-deep in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-in-the-deep-sea-may-hold-clues-about-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seawater</a>. His actions made headlines globally, underscoring the severity of the situation. And yet, the battle is far from over.</p>



<p>Sea levels, as the WMO report indicated, will persist in their ascent for hundreds to thousands of years, making this an issue that continues to loom large over our future due to the continued deep ocean heat uptake and mass loss from ice sheets.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-save-our-seas">Save our seas</h2>



<p>U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres raised a global SOS or "Save Our Seas" plea from the Pacific Island nation of Tonga, entreating the world to drastically up its finance and support for vulnerable nations in grave danger from the human-caused climate crisis.</p>



<p>“The ocean is overflowing,” Guterres said. “This is a crazy situation: Rising seas are a crisis entirely of humanity’s making. A crisis that will soon swell to an almost unimaginable scale, with no lifeboat to take us back to safety.”</p>



<p>The Pacific Islands face a triple whammy of ocean heating, sea level rise, and acidification. These changes threaten ecosystems, damage crops, contaminate fresh water sources, and destroy livelihoods. The climate crisis and the resulting sea level rise are no longer distant threats but immediate dangers, particularly for the Pacific.</p>



<p>“Surging seas are coming for us all,” said U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. “The world must look to the Pacific and listen to science… if we save the Pacific, we also save ourselves.”</p>



<p>Guterres implored the world to look to the Pacific, heed science, and claim responsibility. In doing so, we don't just save these island nations, we ultimately save ourselves.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-demystifying-quantum-encryption">Demystifying quantum encryption</h2>



<p>Steering the helm of this technology is Paulo Henrique Dias Ferreira, a skilled researcher from the Department of Physics at the Federal University of São Carlos (<a href="https://www.srinter.ufscar.br/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UFSCar</a>) in São Paulo, Brazil. </p>



<p>Ferreira, in collaboration with Professor Roberto Osellame's team at the <a href="https://www.polimi.it/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Polytechnic University of Milan</a>, established a unique quantum state on a photonic chip during his postdoctorate work. </p>



<p>This innovative research, recently presented in the journal <em>npj Quantum Information</em>, is a leap forward in the realm of quantum communication.</p>



<p>Unlike the classical version, quantum encryption doesn't depend on complex mathematical algorithms to preserve data. It uses the core principles of quantum mechanics. </p>



<p>The security of these systems is rooted in the behavior of quantum particles, which operate differently from the classical world. </p>



<p>Any attempts at spying or interference become instantaneously obvious due to the alteration of the quantum states involved.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magic-of-quantum-entanglement">Magic of quantum entanglement</h2>



<p>This innovation is built upon the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-a-simple-way-to-grasp-this-impossible-concept-carl-kocher/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">idea of entangled states</a>, particularly the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state. </p>



<p>This type of entanglement involving at least three subsystems, whether particles, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/building-quantum-computers-just-got-easier-with-new-technique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">qubits</a>, or qudits, piqued interest in the late 1980s. </p>



<p>In Ferreira's research, these entangled states were produced using a glass photonic chip where femtosecond laser machining wrote circuits manipulating photons in three dimensions (3D).</p>



<p>"The choice for a glass matrix for production was simple -- it was easily prototyped. Plus, single-stage fabrication creates 3D waveguides, a task conventional lithography or electron beam writing couldn't achieve," Ferreira elaborates. </p>



<p>This procedure allows for accurate control over the photon's optical phases, crucial for forming the desired quantum overlap.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quantum-encryption-as-a-security-tool">Quantum encryption as a security tool</h2>



<p>Envisage having four coins. In a typical scenario, each coin can either land heads or tails independently. However, in a GHZ entangled state, should one coin land heads, they all do. Contrarily, there's no probability of a mixed outcome. </p>



<p>This is the power of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quantum-entanglement-laws-thermodynamics-follow-entropy-rule/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum entanglement</a>, creating deep connections between particles so that measuring one instantly reveals the state of the others, regardless of their distance.</p>



<p>But the fun doesn't stop there. Quantum entanglement holds potential for practical uses. Quantum secret sharing systems, for instance, could alter how we distribute sensitive information. In such systems, a key is securely shared among participants. </p>



<p>Any unauthorized attempt to access the key will change the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/elusive-quantum-negative-entanglement-entropy-deciphered-in-the-lab/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum correlations</a>, making the intrusion instantly noticeable. </p>



<p>Ferreira adds, "when an intruder attempts to measure the state of one particle to access information about the key, the measurement will unavoidably disrupt the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bose-einstein-condensate-bec-rare-form-quantum-matter-created-with-molecules/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum state</a> of that particle and alter the initial quantum correlation among all particles involved."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-and-possibilities">Implications and possibilities</h2>



<p>The use of GHZ states in quantum encryption enhances not only security but also provides a strong mechanism for intrusion detection. This development is crucial in a time where data breaches are increasingly common and expensive. </p>



<p>As quantum computing advances, the threat to classical encryption methods intensifies. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/impossibility-paradox-calculating-incalculable-quantum-realm-particles/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Quantum systems</a> like those developed by Ferreira and his team present a solution inherently resistant to such threats. </p>



<p>Ferreira confidently states, "Quantum systems utilizing GHZ states and other entanglement protocols offer a solution that even the most advanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-material-chiral-superconductor-shows-great-potential-quantum-computing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">quantum computers</a> can't crack."</p>



<p>Research has confirmed that high-fidelity GHZ states can be generated on a photonic chip. This opens the doors to large-scale quantum devices that might soon become part of our routine digital infrastructure. </p>



<p>These advancements are tangible and could be integrated into communication and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traditional-computers-verify-errors-made-by-quantum-computers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">computing systems</a>, ushering in a new era of security and efficiency.</p>

‘Unbreakable’ encryption brings quantum internet communication closer to reality

<p>Over 12,000 feet beneath the Pacific Ocean's surface, in a region called the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), ancient rocks blanket the deep seafloor. While these rocks might seem devoid of life, they actually host a variety of tiny sea creatures and microbes, many of which are specially adapted to survive in the dark.</p>



<p>These deep-sea rocks, known as polymetallic nodules, not only provide a habitat for numerous marine organisms but also, surprisingly, generate oxygen on the ocean floor. </p>



<p>This discovery, made by a team of scientists including experts from <a href="https://www.bu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Boston University</a>, challenges the conventional understanding that oxygen production requires sunlight and typically occurs near the ocean’s surface, where phytoplankton photosynthesize.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-oxygen-on-the-seafloor">Dark oxygen on the seafloor</h2>



<p>The presence of oxygen at such depths, in complete darkness, was so unexpected that the researchers initially suspected an error.</p>



<p>“This was really weird, because no one had ever seen it before,” said Jeffrey Marlow, an assistant professor of biology at Boston University’s College of Arts &amp; Sciences and co-author of the study.</p>



<p>Marlow, who specializes in studying microbes in extreme environments like hardened lava and deep-sea hydrothermal vents, initially thought that microbial activity might be responsible for the oxygen production.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To investigate, the research team used deep-sea chambers that land on the seafloor, encapsulating seawater, sediment, polymetallic nodules, and living organisms.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confirming-the-presence-of-oxygen-nbsp">Confirming the presence of oxygen&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The team then measured oxygen levels within these chambers over a 48-hour period. Typically, if organisms are consuming oxygen, the levels would drop based on the amount of activity in the chamber. However, in this case, oxygen levels were rising.</p>



<p>“We did a lot of troubleshooting and found that the oxygen levels increased many more times following that initial measurement,” Marlow explained. “So we’re now convinced it’s a real signal.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mysterious-oxygen-production-nbsp">Mysterious oxygen production&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Marlow and his colleagues conducted their research aboard a vessel dedicated to exploring the CCZ’s ecology. This area, spanning 1.7 million square miles between Hawaii and Mexico, was the focus of an environmental survey sponsored by The <a href="https://metals.co/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Metals Company</a>, a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sea-surveys-identify-over-5000-species-in-future-mining-hotspot/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deep-sea mining</a> firm interested in harvesting these rocks for their valuable metals.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After conducting various experiments, the team, led by Andrew Sweetman from the <a href="https://www.sams.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Scottish Association for Marine Science</a>, concluded that the oxygen production was not primarily driven by microbial activity, despite the presence of many microbes on and inside the rocks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seawater-electrolysis-and-dark-oxygen-nbsp">Seawater electrolysis and dark oxygen&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Polymetallic nodules are rich in rare metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, and manganese, which makes them attractive for mining. The study suggests that the dense concentration of these metals likely triggers a process called “seawater electrolysis.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>This process involves the uneven distribution of metal ions within the rock layers, creating a separation of electrical charges similar to a battery. The energy is sufficient to split water molecules into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-oxygen-discovery-deep-ocean-no-photosynthesis-baffles-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxygen</a> and hydrogen, a process the researchers have termed “dark oxygen” because it occurs without sunlight.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the exact mechanism remains unclear, as do questions about whether oxygen levels vary across the CCZ and the role this oxygen plays in sustaining local ecosystems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-debate-over-deep-sea-mining">The debate over deep sea mining</h2>



<p>The Metals Company describes polymetallic nodules as a “battery in a rock” and claims on its website that mining these nodules could speed up the transition to battery-powered electric vehicles, potentially reducing the need for land-based mining.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Currently, mining in the CCZ is still in the exploratory phase, but the <a href="https://www.isa.org.jm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">United Nations International Seabed Authority</a>, which oversees this area, may start making decisions about mining as early as next year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Metals Company is collaborating with Pacific nations like Nauru, Tonga, and Kiribati to secure mining licenses, though several other South Pacific countries, including Palau, Fiji, and Tuvalu, have expressed strong opposition, advocating for a moratorium or a pause on mining activities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Environmental groups like <a href="https://www.greenpeace.org/international/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenpeace</a> and <a href="https://oceanconservancy.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ocean Conservancy</a> are calling for a permanent ban, fearing that mining could cause irreversible damage to the seafloor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disrupting-an-unexplored-ecosystem">Disrupting an unexplored ecosystem</h2>



<p>Meanwhile, scientists are beginning to study the potential impacts of disrupting this largely unexplored ecosystem. The current study provides valuable baseline data on the area's conditions before any large-scale mining begins.</p>



<p>“We don’t know the full implications, but to me this finding suggests that we should deeply consider what altering these systems would do to the animal community,” Marlow said, stressing that all animals need oxygen to survive.</p>



<p>The CCZ also offers a unique environment for studying the planet’s smallest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-microbes-can-tell-us-about-global-changes-in-the-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">organisms</a>, such as bacteria and archaea (single-celled organisms) found in sediments and on the nodules.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-search-for-extraterrestrial-life-nbsp">The search for extraterrestrial life&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Marlow and his co-author Peter Schroedl, a PhD student in Boston University’s ecology, behavior, and evolution program, are particularly interested in using microbes from extreme environments like the CCZ as models for discovering single-celled life on other planets and moons. This field, known as astrobiology, seeks to enhance the search for extraterrestrial life by studying Earth’s systems.</p>



<p>“Life in environments like the CCZ provides an opportunity to study ecosystems that developed under distinct evolutionary pressures and constraints,” said Schroedl. He added that the conditions in the CCZ - depth, pressure, and aquatic environment - are analogous to conditions we have measured or expect to discover on icy moons.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-of-dark-oxygen-nbsp">Implications of dark oxygen&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“Who knows - if these types of rocks are under the ice making oxygen, that could allow a more productive biosphere to exist,” said Marlow.</p>



<p>He noted that if photosynthesis isn’t required to make oxygen, then other planets with oceans and metal-rich rocks like these nodules could sustain a more evolved biosphere than what we thought was possible.</p>



<p>Marlow acknowledged that there are still many questions to explore regarding the implications of this dark oxygen discovery for both extraterrestrial oceans and our own.</p>



<p>“For the most part, we think of the deep sea as a place where decaying material falls down and animals eat the remnants. But this finding is recalibrating that dynamic," said Marlow. </p>



<p>"It helps us to see the deep ocean as a place of production, similar to what we have found with methane seeps and hydrothermal vents that create oases for marine animals and microbes. I think it’s a fun inversion of how we tend to think about the deep sea."</p>

<p>Emotional intelligence, often overshadowed by traditional measures of intelligence, may hold the hidden key to academic success.</p>



<p>While cognitive ability has long been considered the most significant factor in educational achievement, recent research by a consortium of international experts suggests otherwise. </p>



<p>The study provides evidence that emotional intelligence is just as crucial in shaping a student's academic journey as brain intelligence.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-emotional-intelligence">What is emotional intelligence?</h2>



<p>Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and influence your own emotions and the emotions of others. </p>



<p>This type of intelligence involves being aware of how emotions affect behavior, using emotional awareness to guide thinking and actions, and managing emotions to achieve personal and interpersonal effectiveness.</p>



<p>Emotional intelligence is often broken down into four key components: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emotional-intelligence-and-academics">Emotional intelligence and academics</h2>



<p>The research was jointly led by Dr. Margherita Malanchini at <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a> and Dr. Andrea Allegrini at <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London</a>. The experts determined that non-cognitive skills, such as motivation and self-regulation, are critical determinants of academic success.</p>



<p>These skills become increasingly influential throughout a child's education, highlighting the importance of supporting both cognitive and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noncognitive-skills-contribute-as-much-to-success-as-cognitive-ability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">non-cognitive abilities</a>.</p>



<p>"Our research challenges the long-held assumption that intelligence is the primary driver of academic achievement," said Dr. Malanchini. </p>



<p>"We’ve found compelling evidence that non-cognitive skills - such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/kids-who-play-sports-have-more-grit-to-succeed-as-adults/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">grit</a>, perseverance, academic interest, and the value attributed to learning - are not only significant predictors of success but that their influence grows stronger over time."</p>



<p>The research journey involved following over 10,000 children from age 7 to 16 in England and Wales. By utilizing twin studies and DNA-based analyses, the researchers were able to examine the complex interplay between genes, environment, and academic performance.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-non-cognitive-genetics-a-powerful-influence">Non-cognitive genetics: A powerful influence</h2>



<p>One of the most notable outcomes of the study is the escalating role of genetics in shaping non-cognitive skills and their impact on academic achievement. </p>



<p>The researchers constructed a "polygenic score" for non-cognitive skills by analyzing DNA, essentially creating a genetic snapshot of a child's predisposition towards these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/focusing-on-your-strongest-skills-can-improve-your-outlook/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">skills</a>.</p>



<p>"We discovered that genetic effects associated with non-cognitive skills become increasingly predictive of academic achievement over the school years. In fact, their effect nearly doubles between the ages of 7 and 16," explained Dr. Allegrini. </p>



<p>"By the end of compulsory <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/formal-education-is-not-linked-to-greater-job-satisfaction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">education</a>, genetic dispositions towards non-cognitive skills were equally as important as those related to cognitive abilities in predicting academic success."</p>



<p>The findings challenge the traditional view that intelligence is the primary driver of educational achievement. They suggest instead that a child's emotional and behavioral makeup, influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, plays a crucial role in their academic journey.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-the-environment-in-academic-success">Role of the environment in academic success </h2>



<p>Despite the extensive influence of genetics on non-cognitive skills, the environment also holds a valuable place in a child's academic development. </p>



<p>By comparing siblings, researchers were able to isolate the impact of shared family environment from genetic factors.</p>



<p>"We found that while family-wide processes play a significant role, the increasing influence of non-cognitive genetics on academic achievement remained evident even within families," said Dr. Allegrini. </p>



<p>"This suggests that children may actively shape their own learning experiences based on their personality, dispositions, and abilities, creating a feedback loop that reinforces their strengths."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-the-education-system">Implications for the education system</h2>



<p>The findings of this study have profound implications for education. By recognizing the critical role of non-cognitive skills, schools can develop targeted interventions to support students' emotional and social development alongside their academic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-learning-how-the-brain-stores-new-information/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">learning</a>.</p>



<p>"Our education system has traditionally focused on cognitive development," said Dr. Malanchini. "It's time to rebalance that focus and give equal importance to nurturing non-cognitive skills. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment for all students."</p>



<p>Further research into the complex interplay of genes, environment, and education will be a crucial step going forward.</p>



<p>By understanding these factors, educators and policymakers can develop more effective strategies to support students' overall development and achieve better educational outcomes.</p>



<p>"This study is just the beginning," said Dr. Malanchini. "We hope it will inspire further research and lead to a transformation in how we approach education."</p>

<p>Have you ever thought about how tiny fossilized shells can unlock the secrets of historical weather patterns and provide insights into climate change? </p>



<p>These microscopic remnants hold vital clues about Earth's climatic shifts approximately 59 to 51 million years ago, specifically during the transition from the Paleocene to the Eocene epochs. </p>



<p>During this time, our planet experienced both gradual warming over millions of years and sudden temperature spikes known as hyperthermals. </p>



<p>But what caused these dramatic changes in Earth's climate? Massive emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases played a significant role, while tectonic activity might have also contributed to these shifts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-co2-levels-and-sea-surface-temperatures">CO2 levels and sea surface temperatures</h2>



<p>A team of geoscientists from the <a href="https://www.utah.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Utah</a> has found a close correlation between sea surface temperatures and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-ancient-plants-affect-atmospheric-co2-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmospheric CO2 levels</a> during this ancient period.</p>



<p>“The main reason we are interested in these global carbon release events is because they can provide analogs for future change,” explained lead author Dustin Harper, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Geology &amp; Geophysics. “We really don't have a perfect analog event with the exact same background conditions and rate of carbon release.”</p>



<p>The study suggests emissions during two ancient "thermal maxima" share similarities with today's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-evidence-that-climate-change-is-caused-by-human-activities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anthropogenic climate change</a>. These findings can help scientists forecast its consequences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossilized-shells-and-climate-insights">Fossilized shells and climate insights</h2>



<p>The research team painstakingly analyzed microscopic fossils that were recovered from drilling cores collected on an undersea plateau in the Pacific. </p>



<p>The experts used a sophisticated statistical model to reconstruct sea surface temperatures and atmospheric CO2 levels over a 6-million-year period. </p>



<p>This study period included the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) around 56 million years ago and the Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 (ETM-2) around 54 million years ago. As atmospheric CO2 levels rose, global temperatures followed suit.</p>



<p>“We have multiple ways that our planet, that our atmosphere is being influenced by CO2 additions, but in each case, regardless of the source of CO2, we're seeing similar impacts on the climate system,” said co-author Gabriel Bowen, a professor of geology &amp; geophysics at the University of Utah. </p>



<p>“We’re interested in how sensitive the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-play-an-overlooked-role-in-the-climate-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate system</a> was to these changes in CO2. What we see in this study is some variation - maybe a little lower sensitivity, a lower warming associated with a given amount of CO2 change when looking at these very long-term shifts. But overall, we see a common range of climate sensitivities.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forecasting-climate-change-with-ancient-shells">Forecasting climate change with ancient shells</h2>



<p>Today, human activities linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-from-fossil-fuels-kills-5-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fossil fuels</a> are releasing carbon 4 to 10 times more rapidly than during these ancient hyperthermal events. </p>



<p>However, the total quantity of carbon released during these ancient occasions aligns with the projections for human emissions, potentially offering a glimpse into what could be in store for future generations.</p>



<p>“These events might represent a mid- to worst-case scenario kind of case study,” Harper noted. “We can investigate them to answer what’s the environmental change that happens due to this carbon release?”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-study-through-microscopic-shells">A study through microscopic shells</h2>



<p>To understand the conditions during these episodes of planetary heating, researchers examined fossilized remains of foraminifera, a type of shelled single-cell organism similar to plankton. </p>



<p>These tiny shells accumulate small quantities of boron, whose isotopes serve as proxies for CO2 concentrations in the ancient ocean when the shells formed. </p>



<p>“We measured the boron chemistry of the shells and were able to translate those values using modern observations to past seawater conditions. We can estimate seawater CO2 and translate that into atmospheric CO2," explained Harper. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-archive-of-ancient-conditions">An archive of ancient conditions</h2>



<p>The study focused on cores from Shatsky Rise located in the subtropical North Pacific. This site is ideal for retrieving ocean-bottom sediments that reflect conditions in the ancient past.</p>



<p>“These places in the middle of the ocean really don't have a lot of sediment supply from continents, so it is predominantly these fossils, making for a really good archive for what we want to do,” noted Harper.</p>



<p>The shallow water depth at Shatsky Rise prevents the dissolution of shells, allowing scientists to recover a complete sequence of fossilized remains and create an excellent archive for studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-needed-millions-of-years-to-recover-from-past-climate-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">past climates</a>.</p>



<p>These findings serve as a powerful reminder of how much we can learn from our planet's history and how this knowledge can guide our actions.</p>



<p>Understanding past environmental changes can help us anticipate, and potentially mitigate, the impacts of modern climate change.</p>

<p>The sun's surface may be in for a minor to moderate flare-up from new sunspots, according to the most recent weekend space weather solar forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). </p>



<p>They suggest that a few R1 and R2 solar flares may erupt from active sunspots, causing our celestial father to glow with unusual intensity.</p>



<p>While the weekend forecast doesn't quite predict a Northern Lights display, remember that solar flares are a major cause of this phenomenon. </p>



<p>Given it takes a few days for solar material to become visible on Earth, we may be in for a surprise aurora showing sometime next week.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-solar-flares-and-sunspots">Solar flares and sunspots</h2>



<p>An area of the Sun, identified as 'Region 3796', that has been quite active lately, appears to have slowed down. Nonetheless, the NOAA remains suspects to see more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secondary-peak-extreme-geomagnetic-solar-storm-expected-today/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">solar storms</a> from sunspots as soon as this weekend.</p>



<p>This optimism stems from the fact that this region produced an R2 flare Wednesday morning, indicating its "flare potential."</p>



<p>As of last Thursday, there were 12 distinct sunspot groups covering over 2 billion miles. That's more than 11 times the land area of our home planet! </p>



<p>With Region 3796 currently facing Earth, these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sunspot-region-ar3664-blasted-earth-mars-may-2024-still-very-active/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunspots</a> should be visible with the right equipment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spot-the-sunspots">Spot the sunspots</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.noaa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a> suggests using solar eclipse glasses to view the spots while the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/severe-geomagnetic-storm-alert-issued-sun-begins-erupting-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun</a> is still in the sky. However, do not forget to inspect your glasses for any scratches, marks, or holes -- these could potentially diminish the protective ability of your spectacles.</p>



<p>The sun rotates around 13 degrees every day, allowing us to observe how the sunspots evolve each day as they grow, potentially trigger solar flares, fade away, or rotate out of sight.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-solar-eclipse-glasses-work">How solar eclipse glasses work</h2>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-solar-cycles">Understanding solar cycles</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/suns-next-solar-cycle-26-has-already-begun/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sun goes through a cycle</a> approximately every 11 years, and we’re currently in 'Solar Cycle 25'. This cycle has been the source of solar flares and geomagnetic storms, resulting in recent sightings of the Northern Lights. </p>



<p>NASA predicts that this cycle will continue into the next year.</p>



<p>Commencing in December 2019, Solar Cycle 25 is anticipated to reach its maximum -- when solar flares and activity are expected to peak -- between late 2024 and early 2026. </p>



<p>The projected peak comes with 115 sunspots, which are notorious for birthing geomagnetic storms.</p>



<p>Although this maximum phase hasn't yet arrived, our sun's activity has been livelier than scientists expected, leading to the possibility of more geomagnetic storms leading up to 2026. </p>



<p>However, predicting the exact timing of these storms can be tricky.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-of-solar-flares-on-earth">Effects of solar flares on Earth</h2>



<p>Solar flares, resulting from increase in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sun-solar-cycle-25-highest-number-sunspots-activity-seen-since-2001/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunspots</a>, can significantly impact both technology and daily life on Earth. </p>



<p>When solar flares erupt, they release immense bursts of energy and charged particles that can disrupt communication systems, navigation satellites, and even power grids.</p>



<p> These disturbances can lead to radio blackouts, GPS navigation inaccuracies, and in extreme cases, widespread electrical outages. </p>



<p>Scientists and engineers continually monitor solar activity to mitigate these effects, employing advanced models that help to predict solar storms and their potential consequences. </p>



<p>Awareness of solar activity is vital, especially for those in fields heavily reliant on technology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-sunspot-activity-impact-solar-flares">High sunspot activity impact solar flares</h2>



<p>To provide some context, around 299 sunspots were observed on August 8, as predicted by NOAA. This remarkable figure marks the highest sunspot count recorded since the beginning of Solar Cycle 25 and is also the most significant number of sunspots seen since at least July 2002. </p>



<p>Sunspots, which are temporary phenomena on the Sun's photosphere, indicate areas of magnetic activity and can significantly influence solar radiation output. </p>



<p>The increase in sunspots and solar flares can have various effects on space weather, affecting satellite operations and even power grids on Earth. </p>



<p>The official count and analysis of these sunspots will be released by NOAA on September 1, providing further <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rare-g5-level-geomagnetic-storm-highest-level-hits-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">insights into solar activity</a>.</p>

<p>For centuries, climate change has been a hotly debated topic with far-reaching consequences. But did you ever consider the drastic impact it could have had on prehistoric humans, particularly during the Ice Age in Europe?</p>



<p>A significant new study published in the journal <em>Science Advances</em> has brought to light some chilling facts, revealing how climate change directly influenced the demographics of early European hunter-gatherers. Extreme cold periods caused sharp population declines, even to the extent of near-extinction in the West.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dental-data-from-prehistoric-humans">Dental data from prehistoric humans</h2>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Hannes Rathmann from the Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Palaeoenvironment at the <a href="https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tübingen</a> in Germany. His team adopted a novel approach, focusing on the hardest part of human remains – the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-bones-and-teeth-reveal-remarkable-diversity-at-argentina-fossil-site/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">teeth</a>.</p>



<p>“Teeth are the hardest tissue in the human body and are therefore the most common fossil skeletal elements found by archaeologists,” noted Dr. Rathmann.</p>



<p>This strategy allowed the researchers to amass an unparalleled dataset, including dental data from 450 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/prehistoric-humans-used-ancient-plant-fiber-technology-to-make-tools-39000-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prehistoric humans</a> across Europe, covering a time span from 47,000 to 7,000 years ago.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracing-genetic-relationships-through-teeth">Tracing genetic relationships through teeth</h2>



<p>The research team, comprising experts from Germany, Italy, and the United States, analyzed "morphological" tooth traits - small variations such as the number and shape of crown cusps, ridge and groove patterns on the chewing surface, and the presence or absence of wisdom teeth.</p>



<p>"These traits are heritable, which means we can use them to trace genetic relationships among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/consequences-of-climate-changes-after-the-last-ice-age/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ice</a> Age humans without requiring well-preserved ancient DNA," explained Dr. Rathmann.</p>



<p>By also examining hundreds of published photographs of fossils, the team included valuable specimens lost or destroyed during events like World War II.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-ice-age-connectivity">Climate change and Ice Age connectivity</h2>



<p>The researchers found that between 47,000 and 28,000 years ago - during the Middle Pleniglacial - populations in Western and Eastern Europe were genetically well connected.</p>



<p>"This finding is consistent with our previous knowledge from archaeological studies, which identified widespread similarities in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/400000-year-old-stone-tools-show-technological-adaptations-of-prehistoric-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stone tools</a>, hunting weapons, and portable art from different regions," said Dr. Judith Beier from the DFG Center for Advanced Studies Words, Bones, Genes, Tools at the University of Tübingen.</p>



<p>However, during the Late Pleniglacial period (28,000 to 14,700 years ago), the team found no genetic connections between Western and Eastern Europe. Both regions experienced significant reductions in population size and a consequent loss of genetic diversity.</p>



<p>"This drastic demographic change was probably caused by massive climate changes: Temperatures during this period dropped to the lowest values of the entire Upper Paleolithic and culminated in the Last Glacial Maximum," said Dr. Rathmann.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shift-in-ice-age-populations">Shift in Ice Age populations</h2>



<p>The harsh climate caused a shift from steppe to tundra landscapes, severely affecting the habitats of prey animals and, consequently, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-age-hunter-gatherers-had-a-very-organized-domestic-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hunter-gatherers</a>.</p>



<p>"Our results support the long-held theory that populations were not only driven southward by advancing ice sheets but also separated into largely isolated refugia with more favorable environmental conditions," said Dr. Beier.</p>



<p>Notably, the experts discovered that populations in Western Europe went extinct at the transition from the Middle to the Late Pleniglacial, only to be replaced by new groups migrating from Eastern Europe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-re-emergence-and-reconnection">Re-emergence and reconnection</h2>



<p>As the Late Pleniglacial concluded, temperatures began to rise, glaciers retreated, and steppe and forest vegetation returned. This allowed the previously isolated and greatly reduced populations in Western and Eastern Europe to grow again, with inter-region migration resuming.</p>



<p>Dr. Maria Teresa Vizzari from the University of Ferrara, a key developer of the study’s machine learning algorithm called Pheno-ABC, emphasized the significance of this approach. </p>



<p>"Our new method has enabled us to reconstruct complex prehistoric demographic events using morphological data. As far as we know, this has never been achieved before," said Dr. Vizzari.</p>



<p>The Pheno-ABC algorithm identified the most likely demographic scenarios among the many tested, revolutionizing the future analysis of fossil skeletal morphology.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-from-the-ice-age-climate">Insights from the Ice Age climate </h2>



<p>According to Dr. Rathmann, the study provides important insights into the demographic history of Ice Age Europeans and highlights the profound impact of climate and environmental changes on the lives of prehistoric humans. </p>



<p>"We should urgently learn from our past if we want to address the complex environmental problems of the future," concluded Dr. Rathmann.</p>

<p>Smart toys, such as Toniebox, Tiptoi, and Tamagotchi, are gaining momentum in many households worldwide. </p>



<p>Unfortunately, these highly interactive playmates might be harboring a lesser-known secret -- they might be prying into your child's behavioral data, raising serious privacy concerns.</p>



<p>Now, that's a playdate you didn't sign up for.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smart-toys-keeping-track">Smart toys keeping track</h2>



<p>The Toniebox, as an example, is especially popular among our little ones. It's an innovative toy that beautifully simplifies music and audio playback for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/infants-show-creativity-skills-even-before-they-can-talk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">small children</a>. </p>



<p>Just imagine -- a plastic figurine of Peppa Pig mounted on this box, and Voila! You have Peppa narrating her own story.</p>



<p>The kid has the command -- if they want to stop, they can just remove the figurine. For rewinding or fast-forwarding, tilting the box in respective directions does the trick. What a lavish setting for an uninterrupted playtime, right?</p>



<p>But should parents get too excited about this? </p>



<p>This fun box is meticulously taking notes -- tracking when it's activated and by which figurine, when the child stops the play and where they rewind or fast-forward. </p>



<p>Once the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/five-scientifically-proven-steps-for-thriving-infant-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">playtime</a>'s over, it promptly reports back to its maker with all the collected data.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-analyzing-the-data">Analyzing the data</h2>



<p>Professor Isabel Wagner of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the <a href="https://www.unibas.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Basel</a> led a team of researchers to study this area.</p>



<p>The Toniebox was just one of the many smart toys that went under the radar. The team left no stone unturned - from the Tiptoi smart pen, the Edurino learning app, the Tamagotchi virtual pet to less popular ones like the Moorebot and Kidibuzz, all had to face this scrutiny.</p>



<p>The team focused primarily on security measures taken by these toys' manufacturers. They investigated how well the data traffic is encrypted. </p>



<p>Moreover, they checked these toys for data protection and transparency, and if they're in compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (<a href="https://gdpr-info.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GDPR</a>).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smart-toy-chronicles">Smart toy chronicles</h2>



<p>The Toniebox and Tiptoi smart pen led the find. The findings weren't really in favor of them when it came to security. The data traffic in both toys wasn't adequately encrypted. </p>



<p>However, Toniebox did stir up a privacy storm by collecting data and sending it to the manufacturer, while Tiptoi played it safe in this regard.</p>



<p>Professor Wagner also made an unsettling revelation that even if these toys are operated offline temporarily, they can store the data locally and transmit it whenever they get the chance. </p>



<p>Many manufacturers argue that the collected data helps them optimize their devices. However, with some toys demanding unnecessary access rights, like a smartphone's location or microphone, it puts the users in a tight spot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-privacy-first">Privacy first</h2>



<p>“Children’s privacy requires special protection,” emphasizes Julika Feldbusch, first author of the study.</p>



<p>According to her, toy manufacturers must prioritize privacy and product security more than they currently do, keeping in mind their young target <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/talking-to-babies-in-parentese-boosts-their-language-development/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">audience</a>.</p>



<p>The researchers propose that a standard compliance label on the packaging, akin to nutritional information on food items, would help parents make an informed choice. </p>



<p>At present, it's quite a task for parents to gauge the security risks these smart toys pose.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-note-to-parents">Note to parents</h2>



<p>“We’re already seeing signs of a two-tier society when it comes to privacy protection for children,” says Feldbusch. </p>



<p>“Well-informed parents engage with the issue and can choose toys that do not create <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/babies-need-quick-responses-to-their-babbling-to-learn-language/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavioral profiles</a> of their children. But many lack the technical knowledge or don’t have time to think about this stuff in detail.”</p>



<p>However, it's crucial to recognize that even though individual children may not experience immediate negative effects, continuous monitoring can hinder their personal growth and self-reliance. </p>



<p>Striking a balance between supervision and independence is essential for healthy development. Encouraging children to explore and learn from their experiences will ultimately foster resilience and confidence, which are vital for their future success.</p>



<p>So, it's high hour we raise the curtain on these covert operations and advocate for stricter safety standards for smart toys. After all, when it comes to our kids, it's always better safe than sorry!</p>

<p>Picture this -- you have a barrier of concrete block of letters, and your goal is to figure out exactly what they mean. But the catch? These aren't letters from a typical language that you already know, they're sequences from the intricate and complex language of the human genome. Now, what if there's a hidden rule, a “spatial grammar,” that holds the key to the meaning behind these DNA sequences?</p>



<p>That's exactly what team of scientists recently discovered -- a hidden "spatial grammar" code embedded within DNA.</p>



<p>This surprising discovery is poised to rewrite our understanding of gene regulation and the impacts of genetic variations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unmasking-gene-activity">Unmasking gene activity</h2>



<p>Transcription factors are proteins that play a critical role in regulating gene expression within a cell. They bind to specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mitochondria-fling-dna-into-our-brain-cells-making-us-age-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DNA sequences</a> near genes to either promote or inhibit their transcription into RNA. </p>



<p>This process is vital for determining which genes are active at any given time, influencing cellular functions and responses. </p>



<p>Transcription factors can change their activity in response to various signals, allowing for dynamic regulation of gene expression.</p>



<p>By controlling gene activation and silencing, transcription factors are essential for processes such as development, differentiation, and adaptation to environmental changes. Their proper functioning is crucial for overall cellular health.</p>



<p>Sascha Duttke, an assistant professor at WSU's <a href="https://vetmed.wsu.edu/departments/school-of-molecular-biosciences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Molecular Biosciences</a> in the College of Veterinary Medicine, led the research team.</p>



<p>“Contrary to what you will find in textbooks, transcription <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protein-that-halts-dna-damage-may-lead-to-cancer-vaccines/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">factors</a> that act as true activators or repressors are surprisingly rare,” noted Duttke. </p>



<p>Turns out, the role of a transcription factor isn't set in stone. Instead, it may play music or stop it based on the position it's in.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spatial-grammar-in-dna">“Spatial grammar” in DNA</h2>



<p>How does DNA's spatial grammar work exactly? Think of transcription factors as pieces on a board game. Their function isn't determined just by what piece they are, but crucially, where they are on the board.</p>



<p>Bayley McDonald, a <a href="https://wsu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WSU</a> graduate student part of the research team, explains how removing an activator didn't always halt gene activity. Surprising as it was, the function of many transcription factors was highly position dependent. </p>



<p>“If you remove an activator, your hypothesis is you lose activation,” McDonald explained. “But that was true in only 50% to 60% of the cases, so we knew something was off.”</p>



<p>How they act depends on the "spacing" or "ambience" between the transcription factors and their position in relation to where a gene's transcription starts.</p>



<p>“It just goes to show that similar to learning a new language, to learn how gene expression patterns are encoded in our genome, we need to understand both its words and the grammar," added Duttke.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spatial-grammar-in-dna-regulation">Spatial grammar in DNA regulation</h2>



<p>The discovery of spatial grammar within the genome has profound implications for our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cracking-the-code-of-life-the-secret-language-of-dna/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gene regulation</a>. </p>



<p>For instance, it challenges the traditional view that transcription factors operate in isolation, suggesting instead that gene expression is a complex interplay influenced by the relative positioning of these factors. </p>



<p>This nuanced understanding could lead to more accurate predictions regarding how genes respond to environmental cues or developmental signals. </p>



<p>Additionally, recognizing the positional dynamics of transcription factors offers new avenues for therapeutic interventions, particularly in diseases where gene regulation goes awry, such as cancer.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-directions">Future directions</h2>



<p>As researchers move deeper into the concept of spatial grammar, several avenues for future inquiry emerge. </p>



<p>The next steps may include exploring how different cellular environments or external stimuli affect the spatial positioning of transcription factors and their consequent impact on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-transfer-longevity-gene-hoping-to-extend-human-lifespan/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gene expression</a>. </p>



<p>Moreover, advancements in imaging technologies could allow scientists to visualize these dynamics in real time within living organisms.</p>



<p>As we broaden our understanding of this spatial aspect, we are likely to uncover new dimensions in the field of genomics that could revolutionize biomedical research and enhance precision medicine efforts, ultimately paving the way for more tailored therapeutic strategies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applying-the-rulebook-to-mutations">Applying the rulebook to mutations</h2>



<p>With this new lens to examine the human genome, Christopher Benner, an associate professor at University of California, San Diego (<a href="https://ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCSD</a>), believes that scientists can gain richer insights into how mutations or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/landmark-study-reveals-275-million-new-genetic-variants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">genetic variations</a> could affect gene expression and potentially lead to disease.</p>



<p>”The potential applications are vast,” Benner said. “At the very least, it will change the way scientists study gene expression.”</p>



<p>As we explore the DNA's spatial grammar and overall genome's language, discoveries like these highlight the complexity and beauty of biology. They also represent important steps in understanding our genetic makeup and ourselves.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>

<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. <p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>

<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>

<p>Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.</p>



<p>Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."</p>



<p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.</p>



<p>Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.</p>

The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-during-these-aging-bursts">What happens during these aging bursts</h2>



<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latest-research-confirms-aging-patterns">Latest research confirms aging patterns</h2>



<p>Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.</p>

<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
