Using radar data from a NASA mission launched more than three decades ago, scientists have found fresh clues suggesting that Venus may still be geologically active. 



Strange, circular structures across the planet’s surface might not just be leftover scars of ancient events - they could point to ongoing tectonic processes that are reshaping Venus even now.



These features, called coronae, caught the attention of researchers at the <a href="https://umd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Maryland</a> and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. 



The findings are based on data collected by NASA’s Magellan mission, which orbited Venus in the 1990s. Magellan’s radar system penetrated the thick clouds cloaking the planet, revealing its topography in detail that still hasn’t been surpassed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-activity-beneath-the-surface">Activity beneath the surface</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-reveals-that-venus-is-still-an-active-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coronae</a> are large, oval-shaped formations that can span from a few dozen to hundreds of miles. They’re surrounded by rings of fractures and thought to be shaped by rising plumes of molten rock from beneath Venus’ surface. 



These plumes push against the planet’s crust and upper mantle - collectively called the lithosphere - creating the distinctive ring-like patterns.



“Coronae are not found on Earth today; however, they may have existed when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-earth-was-heated-by-extreme-levels-of-atmospheric-co2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">our planet was young</a> and before plate tectonics had been established,” noted Gael Cascioli, a research scientist at NASA Goddard.



“By combining gravity and topography data, this research has provided a new and important insight into the possible subsurface processes currently shaping the surface of Venus.”



The researchers studied 75 coronae. Of those, 52 showed signs of hot, buoyant mantle material underneath - suggesting that Venus’ surface isn’t as quiet as we once believed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magellan-s-lasting-impact">Magellan’s lasting impact</h2>



NASA’s Magellan spacecraft, managed by the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> in California, launched in 1989 and gathered the most detailed gravity and topographic data of Venus available.



Back then, scientists weren’t sure what to make of coronae. They didn’t know how they formed, or what role—if any—they played in the planet’s geologic activity.



Over time, more coronae were found in areas where Venus’ lithosphere appeared thinner and hotter, hinting at a connection between heat flow and corona formation.



“Coronae are abundant on Venus. They are very large features, and people have proposed different theories over the years as to how they formed,” said Anna Gülcher, Earth and planetary scientist at the University of Bern in Switzerland. 



“The most exciting thing for our study is that we can now say there are most likely various and ongoing active processes driving their formation. We believe these same processes may have occurred early in Earth’s history.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gravity-maps-of-venus">Gravity maps of Venus</h2>



To better understand what’s happening beneath the surface, the research team used 3D geodynamic models and compared them with Magellan’s gravity and topography data. 



The gravity maps were especially important. They helped reveal areas of less dense, rising material beneath the coronae. These would be invisible through topography alone.



The presence of plumes points to multiple tectonic mechanisms at work. One of these is subduction, where material is forced back into the planet’s interior. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-tectonic-activity">Hidden tectonic activity</h2>



On Earth, subduction involves tectonic plates sliding beneath one another. On Venus, it appears to be happening in a different way - around the edges of some coronae. There, plumes push the surface upward, and the surrounding material gets pushed back down.



Another possibility is lithospheric dripping. This is when cooler, heavier chunks of lithosphere sink into the hotter mantle below. 



A third process might also be involved. Plumes under thick lithosphere sections may trigger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanoes-cover-nearly-the-entire-surface-of-venus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic</a> activity at the surface.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-snapshot-of-earth-s-past">A snapshot of Earth’s past</h2>



The idea that these processes might mirror those that occurred on early Earth is especially intriguing. Venus doesn’t have plate tectonics like we do today, but it may be offering us a snapshot of our own planet’s distant past.



Recent radar images from Magellan have already shown direct evidence of volcanic eruptions, including massive lava flows from places like Maat Mons and Sif Mons. 



While these images show volcanic action, researchers still need sharper resolution to fully understand the underlying tectonics shaping the coronae.



Suzanne Smrekar is a planetary scientist at JPL and principal investigator for the VERITAS mission.



“The VERITAS gravity maps of Venus will boost the resolution by at least a factor of two to four, depending on location - a level of detail that could revolutionize our understanding of Venus’ geology and implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-building-blocks-of-life-zinc-arrived-on-early-earth-planetesimals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">early Earth</a>,” said Smrekar.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-upcoming-venus-mission">Upcoming Venus mission</h2>



NASA’s upcoming VERITAS mission (Venus Emissivity, Radio science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy) is set to dig even deeper - figuratively speaking.



Launching no earlier than 2031, VERITAS will use synthetic aperture radar to create high-resolution 3D maps of the entire planet. It will also use an infrared spectrometer to analyze the surface composition and a radio tracking system to measure Venus’ gravity field. Together, these tools could pinpoint areas of active surface reshaping.



As part of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-hellish-planet-venus-can-help-us-find-alien-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VERITAS</a> team, Cascioli and his colleagues are already preparing to use the improved data. Erwan Mazarico, also from NASA Goddard, will co-lead the mission’s gravity experiment.



The hope is that Venus can finally give up more of its secrets. And in doing so, it might tell us something about the early days of our own world.

A new study led by <a href="https://www.psu.edu/">Pennsylvania State University</a> has found that dairy farmers from the Northeast U.S. can reduce the environmental impact of their practices and maximize their revenues by double cropping and injecting manure into the soil instead of broadcasting it. These findings are particularly important in the context of ongoing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-can-slow-global-warming-but-they-cannot-stop-it/">global warming</a> which exacerbates nutrient pollution and lengthens the growing season.



According to scientists, warmer conditions will induce increased ammonia volatilization from manure, as well as more frequent and severe storms that will cause phosphorous runoff. Thus, new strategies are urgently needed to limit nitrogen and phosphorous losses from crop fields, and subsequent environmental pollution.



By using the <a href="https://www.ars.usda.gov/northeast-area/up-pa/pswmru/docs/integrated-farm-system-model/">Integrated Farm System Model</a> developed by C. Alan Rotz, an agricultural engineer at the <a href="https://www.usda.gov/">U.S. Department of Agriculture</a>, scientists simulated several farm management strategies under different climate conditions in order to determine their possible effects on crop yields, nitrogen and phosphorous losses, feed production, sediment erosion, fossil energy use, and production costs.&nbsp;



The researchers found that double cropping and subsurface injection of manure reduced nitrogen losses by 12 to 18 percent and phosphorous losses by 16 to 19 percent, while maintaining and potentially even reducing farm-production costs.



“There’s a lot of interest in double cropping among Northeast dairy farmers,” said study co-author Heather Karsten, an associated professor of Crop Production and Ecology at Pennsylvania State University. “I think farmers are realizing they have a longer growing season, and there are more precipitation events in spring that make getting into the field to do any operation more challenging. Our results demonstrate that adoption of these strategies can help mitigate dairy farm environmental impacts now and even more in the future.”



According to Professor Karsten and her colleagues, reducing projected increases in soluble phosphorous runoff and ammonia emissions caused by warmer temperature and increased levels of precipitation provides a feasible adaptation and mitigation approach for current and future climate change.&nbsp;



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0308521X21002791?via%3Dihub">Agricultural Systems</a>.

Dairy farmers can use strategies to adapt to climate change

A recent study from <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/">UC Riverside</a> reveals that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/diverse-water-use-strategies-help-forests-cope-with-drought/">drought</a> was likely not the sole reason for the collapse of the ancient Mayan civilization.&nbsp;This dominant indigenous society, which was one of the earliest Mesoamerican civilizations, suffered heavily during a series of droughts in the Yucatan Peninsula in southeastern Mexico and northern Central America at the end of the ninth century.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Previous studies have established that Mayan societies began to inexplicably disappear during this period. Paleoclimatic research suggests the droughts led to widespread famine, as Mayans were heavily dependent on drought-sensitive crops such as maize, corn, beans, and squash.



The UC Riverside team, led by archaeologist Scott Fedick and plant biologist Louis Santiago, reveals that the Mayans had access to 497 indigenous food plant species.&nbsp;



“When botanists study drought resistance, they’re usually talking about a specific plant, or a particular ecosystem. One of the reasons this project was so challenging is because we examined the dietary flora of an entire civilization - annuals, perennials, herbs, trees, domesticates, and wild species," said Fedick, highlighting the unique nature of the research.



Fedick recently prepared and released a comprehensive list of indigenous Maya food plants after being unable to find one. It draws on decades of Maya plant knowledge obtained from previous ethnographic and ethnobotanical studies. Faced with the widespread assumption that drought was the reason for Maya social unrest, he and Santiago decided to test the drought tolerance of all 497 plants on the list.



The study identified 577 edible parts such as fruits and roots for 445 of the 497 edible plants, that would be available during a year of normal rainfall. The specific consumable parts for the remaining 52 food plant species were not identified.&nbsp;



"Even in the most extreme drought situation - and we have no clear evidence the most extreme situation ever occurred - 59 species of edible plants would still have persisted,” explained Santiago.



Some of the toughest plants the Mayans would have turned to include cassava with its edible tubers, and hearts of palm. Another is chaya, a shrub domesticated by Mayans and eaten today by their descendants. Its leaves are high in protein, iron, potassium, and calcium.



Cassava - with its edible tubers - and hearts of palm are two of the toughest plants the Mayan civilization could have used during times of drought. The findings reveal that the heart of palm and other edible plant stems would have been the most stable and abundant plant food, providing high glucose content and protein levels.



Another plant named chaya is a Maya-domesticated shrub that is still consumed by Mayan descendants today. It&nbsp; contains an abundance of protein, iron, potassium, and calcium in its leaves. “Chaya and cassava together would have provided a huge amount of carbohydrates and protein,” said Santiago.



Even though the researchers were unable to unravel why the Mayan civilization collapsed, they believe the role of social and economic disruption cannot be overlooked.&nbsp;



“One thing we do know is the overly simplistic explanation of drought leading to agricultural collapse is probably not true,” said Fedick.&nbsp;



The study also emphasizes the importance of utilizing a wide range of plants in order to resist drought and to combat climate change.



“Even given a series of droughts, maintaining a diversity of resilient crops would enable people, both ancient and modern, to adapt and survive,” said Santiago.

A research team from the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/patient-visitor-guide/minnesota">Mayo Clinic</a> aims to investigate whether space travel may cause senescence. The researchers will study the first all civilian crew to visit the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/main/index.html">International Space Station</a> (ISS) next month. 



During the process of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/compound-found-in-basil-plants-may-prevent-alzheimers/">senescence</a>, cells age and stop dividing. Instead of dying, however, senescent cells accumulate in tissue throughout the body. While the crew set to travel next month will only spend ten days in space, and will thus not be exposed to serious threats of senescence, spotting early signs of this process could help future, longer-haul trips.



The scientists will take blood and urine samples from the four members of the crew both before and after their voyage to space. “This flight will give us an idea of whether routine spaceflight, without even going beyond the Van Allen belt, is associated with cell senescence,” explained study lead author Dr. James Kirkland, an expert in aging at the Mayo Clinic.&nbsp;



“If we see senescence even under these conditions, we would certainly want to do some work in preparation for a longer mission. Something will have to be worked out before or longer before interplanetary flights are really feasible.”



While senescence is a well-known by-product of natural aging, scientists believe that low gravity conditions or exposure to high levels of solar radiation may speed up this process. Particularly the high gravitational forces that people are exposed to during take-off and space travel could add to DNA cellular senescence.&nbsp;



“The crew on the ISS will be inside the Van Allen belt but the real worry is what's going to happen if there is a Mars mission, and if there is a solar flare, because then you're dealing with atomic radiation,” said Dr. Kirkland. “We've found in preliminary studies very low doses of atomic radiation can drive a cell into senescence at much lower levels than x-rays or gamma rays.”



“And, with atomic radiation, it could pass right through the spacecraft: it's hard to stop. So if there's a Mars mission this could really be a major problem.&nbsp;I'm a physician, not a space scientist, so my view is biased, but I'd say the health problem is pretty darn bad, and I'm very worried after what I've seen.”



If the study results will suggest that space travel may indeed cause senescence, there is still hope that revolutionary drugs, such as the so-called senolytics - which are currently in multiple clinical trials - could be of great help to fight these processes in space travelers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A recent study led by the <a href="https://www.uts.edu.au/">University of Technology Sydney</a>, Australia, has found that ocean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-acidification-disrupts-the-behavior-of-fish-shoals/">acidification</a> – a process mainly caused by carbon dioxide from the atmosphere that is dissolved into the ocean – is a significant threat to a large variety of marine life forms. The study revealed the different effects that ocean acidification had on the energy stores of diatoms, a type of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-profoundly-affect-plankton-communities/">phytoplankton</a> that plays a critical role in marine food chains.



“Primary production in the Southern Ocean is dominated by diatom-rich phytoplankton assemblages, whose individual physiological characteristics and community composition are strongly shaped by the environment, yet knowledge on how diatoms allocate cellular energy in response to ocean acidification (OA) is limited,” wrote the study authors. “Understanding such changes in allocation is integral to determining the nutritional quality of diatoms and the subsequent impacts on the trophic transfer of energy and nutrients.”



By using infrared microspectroscopy – a method usually employed to identify and study chemical substances in liquid, solid, or gaseous forms – the scientists analyzed the macromolecular content of diatoms from a natural Antarctic phytoplankton community that was exposed to ocean acidification caused by a gradient of dissolved carbon dioxide.&nbsp;



“To date, we know little about how ocean acidification will affect the nutritional value of phytoplankton. Our study showed that diatom species exposed to acidified conditions change the way they store excess energy in unique ways,” reported study senior author Dr. Katherina Petrou,&nbsp;an associate professor of Marine Biology at&nbsp;the University of Technology Sydney.&nbsp;



“Our work suggests that ocean acidification will influence the type of energy available at the base of the food web, which ultimately could affect the productivity of our marine ecosystems.”



Dr. Petrou and her colleagues discovered that various species of diatoms acted differently when exposed to environmental stressors such as high concentrations of carbon dioxide. While larger species showed preferential energy allocation toward proteins at high carbon dioxide levels, smaller species increased both their protein and lipid stores.



“If these changes are representative of future Antarctic diatom physiology, we may expect a shift away from lipid-rich large diatoms towards a community dominated by smaller taxa, but with higher lipid and protein stores than their present-day contemporaries, a response that could have cascading effects on food web dynamics in the Antarctic marine ecosystem,” concluded the authors.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nph.17868">New Phytologist</a>.

There are countless studies that confirm the important benefits associated with exercise and demonstrate that we should continue being physically active, particularly as we age.&nbsp;



In a new study, scientists from <a href="https://www.ucsf.edu/">UC San Francisco</a> report that when elderly people stay physically active, their brains produce more of the proteins needed to enhance the connections between neurons (brain cells) and thereby maintain healthy cognitive function.&nbsp;



“Our work is the first that uses human data to show that synaptic protein regulation is related to physical activity and may drive the beneficial cognitive outcomes we see,” said&nbsp;<a href="https://profiles.ucsf.edu/kaitlin.casaletto">Kaitlin Casaletto</a>, PhD, an assistant professor of neurology and lead author of&nbsp;<a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/alz.12530__;!!LQC6Cpwp!8mUQByoFcngAWYAXh2edH9-lozUIILsdSpmVvaKURCROOBLwSV4smnJrX0kw24iKNygCfg$">the study</a>. In the past, the beneficial effects of physical activity on cognition have been shown in mice but have been much harder to demonstrate in people.&nbsp;



Casaletto, a neuropsychologist and member of the&nbsp;<a href="https://weill.ucsf.edu/">Weill Institute for Neurosciences</a>, worked with William Honer, MD, a professor of psychiatry at the University of British Columbia and senior author of the study. They used data from the Memory and Aging Project at Rush University in Chicago that followed the late-life physical activity of elderly participants who, before they died, also donated their brains for scientific study after death.



Honer and Casaletto found that elderly people who remained active had higher levels of proteins that facilitate the exchange of information between neurons. Neurons are separated from each other by tiny gaps, known as synapses, and nerve impulses that travel along the nerve cells have to cross the gaps in order for the information to reach its destination (either the brain or peripheral muscles and glands). Proteins present in neurons just before and just after each synapse provide the chemical mechanism whereby information is transmitted and also link the neurons into cognitive networks.&nbsp;



The results support previous research of Honer’s showing that people who had higher levels of these particular proteins in their brains when they died had been better able to maintain their cognition late in life.&nbsp;



The presence of higher levels of these proteins was not only restricted to the area of the brain known as the hippocampus, which is the seat of memory. Other regions of the brain associated with cognitive function also showed higher levels of synaptic proteins present in elderly people who had remained physically active.&nbsp;



“It may be that physical activity exerts a global sustaining effect, supporting and stimulating healthy function of proteins that facilitate synaptic transmission throughout the brain,” Honer said.



Most older adults accumulate amyloid and tau in their brains. These toxic proteins that are the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease form tangled masses within neurons and eventually block the synapses and prevent them from functioning effectively. This leads to the degeneration and death of the affected nerve cells.&nbsp;



Casaletto previously&nbsp;<a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/n.neurology.org/content/97/3/e284__;!!LQC6Cpwp!8mUQByoFcngAWYAXh2edH9-lozUIILsdSpmVvaKURCROOBLwSV4smnJrX0kw24jAn5Gosw$">found&nbsp;</a>that the levels of synaptic proteins present in the spinal fluid of living adults, or in the brain tissue of autopsied adults, were indicative of synaptic functioning. Furthermore, when levels were low and synapses had degenerated, this was associated with the presence of the destructive amyloid and tau protein tangles. Thus, synaptic integrity appears to influence the relationship between amyloid and tau proteins, and between tau proteins and the further degeneration of neurons.&nbsp;



“In older adults with higher levels of the proteins associated with synaptic integrity, this cascade of neurotoxicity that leads to Alzheimer’s disease appears to be attenuated,” Casaletto said. “Taken together, these two studies show the potential importance of maintaining synaptic health to support the brain against Alzheimer’s disease.”&nbsp;



“Maintaining the integrity of these connections between neurons may be vital to fending off dementia, since the synapse is really the site where cognition happens,” she said. “Physical activity – a readily available tool – may help boost this synaptic functioning.”



The study is published today in <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33047474/">Alzheimer’s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association</a>.

New research led by <a href="https://wsu.edu/">Washington State University</a> has found that large wildfires and extreme heat waves are happening more often at the same time in the western United States, significantly increasing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-low-level-air-pollution-is-dangerous-for-health/">air pollution</a>. In 2020, for example, harmful levels of air pollution caused by such a combination affected more than 68 percent of the western U.S. (approximately 43 million people) in a single day.&nbsp;



When extreme heat events and wildfires occur at the same time, air pollution magnifies considerably: wildfire smoke increases the amount of fine particulate matter in the air, while the heat mixes the smoke with other pollutants to create more ground-level ozone. While stratospheric ozone is protective, ground-level ozone is a major component of smog and poses a substantial public health burden.



By analyzing air quality monitoring data from 2001 to 2020 across western states as well as parts of Canada, the researchers found that annual population exposure to such extreme combined episodes is increasing by about 25 million person-days a year (a figure counting the number of people affected together with the number of days in which they were exposed to air pollution).



“From every indication we have, the hotter, drier conditions projected for this region are likely to increase wildfire activity and contribute to more widespread, severe heat, which means we can expect to see these conditions happen more often in the future,” said co-author Deepti Singh, an assistant professor of environmental sciences at WSU.&nbsp;



“Preparing for these events is really important. We need to think about who is exposed, what capacity there is to minimize that exposure, and how we can protect the most vulnerable people.”



According to Professor Singh and her colleagues, such events could be mitigated by taking measures to slow global warming, better managing wildfires, and making sure people have access to shelters with air quality filters.&nbsp;



However, the size of these simultaneous air pollution events will make it difficult for a large number of people to avoid their impact. “If there's such a large region that's being affected by this air pollution, it really limits where people can go to escape those conditions. You could travel a hundred miles and still not find air quality that is any better,” Professor Singh said.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abi9386">Science Advances</a>.

A new study published in the journal <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S2468266721002498">The Lancet Public Health</a> estimates that the number of adults living with dementia worldwide will triple over the next three decades, rising from 57 million in 2019 to 153 million in 2050. The increase in dementia cases will be caused by population growth and population aging, as well as by risk factors such as smoking, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/obesity-is-the-epidemic-crisis-of-our-time/" data-type="news" data-id="1897553">obesity</a>, and high blood sugar.



Dementia is the seventh cause of death worldwide and one of the main causes of disability and dependency among older people, and seems to affect more women than men. In 2019, the global costs related to dementia were estimated at over $1 trillion.&nbsp;



“Our study offers improved forecasts for dementia on a global scale as well as the country-level, giving policy makers and public health experts new insights to understand the drivers of these increases, based on the best available data,” said study lead author Emma Nichols, a researcher at the <a href="https://www.healthdata.org/">Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation</a> (IHME) at the University of Washington, USA. “These estimates can be used by national governments to make sure resources and support are available for individuals, caregivers, and health systems globally.”



According to Nichols and her colleagues, dementia cases will rise in every country, with the largest increases estimated in North Africa and the Middle East (367 percent), as well as eastern Sub-Saharan Africa (357 percent). The high-income parts of Asia Pacific and Western Europe are estimated to face the smallest increases (53 percent and 74 percent, respectively).



The four main risk factors for dementia are smoking, obesity, high blood sugar, and low education. While improvements in global education access are projected to reduce dementia prevalence by 6.2 million cases by 2050, obesity, smoking, and high blood sugar will likely contribute to an additional 6.8 dementia cases worldwide.



“We need to focus more on prevention and control of risk factors before they result in dementia. Even modest advances in preventing dementia or delaying its progression would pay remarkable dividends,” said Nichols.&nbsp;



“To have the greatest impact, we need to reduce exposure to the leading risk factors in each country. For most, this means scaling up locally appropriate, low-cost programs that support healthier diets, more exercise, quitting smoking, and better access to education. And it also means continuing to invest in research to identify effective treatments to stop, slow, or prevent dementia,” she concluded.

A research team from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/">Oregon State University</a> has recently developed an automated method that can reliably identify calls from a family of fish living among <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-reef-biodiversity-expected-to-shuffle-but-not-decline/">coral reefs</a>. This method uses data collected by hydrophones and offers an efficient and cheap way of understanding changes in marine environments caused by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/95-percent-of-ocean-could-become-inhospitable-this-century/">climate change</a> or other human influences.



Hydrophones are underwater microphones that are increasingly being used in the world’s oceans because they work at night, in low visibility conditions, and during long periods of time.



The scientists collected 18,000 hours of acoustic data over 39 months in a tropical coral reef region from the National Park of American Samoa, via a 12-station hydrophone area coordinated by the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a> (NOAA) and the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/index.htm">National Park Service</a>. The team decided to analyze the distinctive calls of damselfish, which grind their teeth to create clicks, pops, and chirps associated with aggressive behavior and nest defense.



However, the staggering amount of data made it impossible for human beings to thoroughly search through it. “This is such a slow and tedious process,” said study lead author Jill Munger, a research assistant in Marine Ecology at Oregon State University. “I have all this data, and I am just looking at a tiny, tiny portion of it. What’s happening in all the other parts that I haven’t had a chance to listen to?”



At the advice of her brother, Daniel Herrera, a machine learning engineer, Munger and her colleagues built a machine learning algorithm which used an initial set of 4-500 damselfish calls as training data, and afterwards learned to accurately identify 94 percent of damselfish calls.



“We built a machine learning model on a relatively small set of training data and then applied it to an enormous set of data,” Munger explained. “The implications for monitoring the environment are huge.”



This innovative method will increasingly be used by scientists in order to monitor many species of fish in the oceans to assess the impact of climate change or other environmental stressors on marine ecosystems.&nbsp;



“The benefit to observing fish calls over a long period of time is that we can start to understand how it’s related to changing ocean conditions, which influence our nation’s living marine resources. For example, damselfish call abundance can be an indicator of coral reef health,” Munger concluded.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v681/p197-210/">Marine Ecology Progress Series</a>.

Urban gardens are an important part of the cityscape and they add to the ecological, environmental and aesthetic value of a city. A recent study by the scientists at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> discovered that urban gardens provide a steady supply of energy-rich <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bees-high-nectar-special-neurons/">nectar</a> from March to October.



Pollinators are guaranteed a steady food supply if they visit numerous gardens, despite variations in both the quantity and timing of nectar production from one site to another. This is in contrast to earlier research on agriculture, where pollinators are subjected to periodic nectar production cycles with apparent seasonal gaps.



"In this study, we investigate for the first time how the nectar supply of residential gardens varies in space and time and use our results to develop evidence-based management recommendations for pollinator conservation in urban areas," wrote the study authors.



"Nectar sugar is the main energy source for adult pollinators, particularly important for powering their flight muscles, but nectar resources have declined in rural areas due to land-use change."



The researchers noted that the findings of their study can be used to establish evidence-based management suggestions for pollinator conservation in urban locations.



"We knew that gardens were important habitats for UK pollinators, providing 85 percent of nectar sugar in urban landscapes and a great diversity of flowering plants," said <a href="https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/nick-e-tew">Nick Tew</a>, a PhD student in Bristol's School of Biological Sciences.&nbsp;



"However, we did not know how nectar production varied between individual gardens or through the months of the year. It is particularly important to understand garden-to-garden variation to advise how best to collectively manage our gardens for pollinators."



The researchers surveyed 59 home gardens in Bristol, UK, at monthly intervals from March to October. The researchers coupled floral abundances with nectar sugar data for each of the 472 data samples to measure each garden's nectar output, examining the size, temporal stability, variety, and composition of garden nectar supplies.



The results revealed that there is a huge variance in the nectar output of the surveyed gardens ranging from 2 grams to 1.7 kilograms for a year, and this was dictated not by the size of the garden, but by how people decided to maintain their gardens.



As a result of the efforts of several independent gardeners located throughout a city, a stable and diverse supply of food for city pollinators has emerged.



“We measured the amount of nectar produced by flowers in 59 residential gardens in Bristol. We found that individual gardens vary in both how much food they provide and when they provide it during the year. However, because flying pollinators like bees can visit many different gardens, they are likely to be able to find food in residential neighborhoods whenever they need it.” said Nick.



“This means that everyone has the potential to help pollinators in a meaningful way, even with a small garden, and there is a lot of room for improvement, with some gardens providing hundreds of times less food than others, depending on what people choose to plant, weed, prune or mow.” explained Nick further.



The findings of the study can be applied by gardeners to aid the pollinators and thereby contribute to the biodiversity of the city.&nbsp;



Gardeners can help by planting open flowers that bloom later in the year, because tubular blooms are only accessible to long-tongued insects like bumblebees provide 79 percent of nectar in late summer and autumn. Shrubs are also a good way to squeeze a lot of flowers into a small space, and they are responsible for 58 percent of all nectar in gardens.



The research is published in the <a href="https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/13652664">Journal of Applied Ecology</a>.

In the United States, some people have the idea that children need different foods than adults in their diet. But many of the products that are considered to be "children’s" foods are highly processed and sugary and often lead to picky <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-bears-that-eat-human-food-lack-gut-diversity/">food</a> preferences.



The Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior just released a position paper stating that there is no difference between what foods are healthy for children and those that are healthy for adults.



“If you think about kids’ food, the archetype or terminology that we widely use to describe the food that we feed our children, it’s really a social norm or societal construct that we’ve perpetuated,” said Pamela Rothpletz-Puglia of Rutgers University.



The paper traces the idea of different diets for children back to the Prohibition era. During this time, restaurants created children’s menus to make up for a loss of income from alcohol.&nbsp;



Even though it’s a known fact that children over the age of two can benefit from the same food as adults, children’s menus still persist today.&nbsp;



The menus created for kids are often populated with very processed foods such as chicken tenders, grilled cheese sandwiches, hot dogs and deep fried oreos. Unfortunately, children tend to love these options.



The paper calls upon food educators to change this misunderstanding and shift demand and norms in children’s diets. Experts at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior believe that together they can build resilience in communities as well as foster healthy adaptation to the “ultra-processed food environment." This can be accomplished by working with media, restaurants and policy makers.



"Ultraprocessed food is readily available, further reinforcing unhealthy food preferences, which can persist into later childhood and even adulthood, ultimately increasing lifetime risks of obesity, chronic disease, and other adverse health outcomes," wrote the researchers.



"However, nutrition educators can encourage more healthful dietary choices by shifting core beliefs about children's food and educating about how children can eat the same foods as adults."

As the oceans become warmer due to climate change, they will contain less oxygen. The solubility of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/were-there-whiffs-of-oxygen-on-early-earth/">oxygen</a> decreases as temperature increases and so oceanic warming will be accompanied by lower availability of the element. But fish living in warmer waters will have higher energetic demands and associated oxygen consumption. This means that larger fish species will not be able to survive in the oxygen-poor waters of the future because their energy needs will not be met. 



Instead, it is theorized that smaller fish species will become more abundant as climate change pushes up the temperatures of oceanic waters, a situation that could have serious consequences in regions of the world, such as off the coast of Peru, that are currently hotspots for fish production.&nbsp;



In order to understand the possible impact of future climate change on fish abundance, Renato Salvatteci from the Center for Ocean and Society, Christian-Albrechts University, Germany, and colleagues, looked back into conditions during the last interglacial period (130,000–116,000 years before present) when oceanic warming occurred in the Humboldt Current system off the west coast of South America.&nbsp;



The team used a marine sediment core collected off central Peru in 2008, dated it using Oxygen-18 concentrations in benthic foraminifera, and then analyzed samples that fell within the time period for the last interglacial period. They focused particularly on the vertebrae and scales of fish that had been fossilized in these marine sediments and used them to identify the species present and their sizes. 



The findings indicate that the fish fauna present during the previous warm (interglacial) period in the Humboldt Current system was dominated by small, goby-like fishes. This is in comparison with the larger, anchovy-like species that have dominated since the start of the Holocene (11,700 years before present) and that currently drive the region’s incredibly productive modern fishery.&nbsp;



The authors found no evidence of reduction in body size within a fish species during the interglacial period, but rather a replacement of larger species by smaller species, such as gobies, Vinciguerria lucetia (Panama lightfish) and blue lanternfish. They suggest that this shift to smaller fish species was most likely due to the lower oxygen content of the warmer water 130,000 years ago, rather than to changes in food supply. Smaller goby-like fishes have larger gill surfaces in relation to their body volume and can therefore withstand low oxygen water while anchovies, which reproduce in water less than 25oC, probably would have migrated poleward to seek more favorable conditions at that time.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Using the Regional Ocean Modeling System that provides daily, three-dimensional temperature, salinity, sea level and velocity fields over the 2006–2100 time period, the authors were able to ascertain predicted oceanic conditions up until the start of the 22nd century. This modeling system predicted that similar conditions will occur in future to those found to exist during the last interglacial period. For example, future projections show a similar magnitude of warming (about 2o above current temperatures), intensified subsurface oxygen depletion, strengthened vertical density gradients and comparable primary production.&nbsp;



Due to the similarities in environmental conditions between what is predicted later this century and what occurred during the last interglacial period, the researchers see no reason why the same trend in smaller fish species should not also characterize the ocean communities of the future. This would have profound consequences for marine biodiversity but would also pose a threat to fisheries and to those dependent on fish as a source of food and livelihood, worldwide.&nbsp;



In fact, recent studies indicate that the environmental conditions and fish communities in the Humboldt Current system are already progressing toward those of the study’s paleoreconstruction. For example, in the past few decades, mid-water oxygen concentrations have decreased off Peru, the abundance of several warm-water mesopelagic species (like V. lucetia) has increased, and anchovy biomass and landings have steadily decreased.&nbsp;



“Fishery managers, global markets, and other stakeholders will need to develop adaptive strategies to cope with this threat to the Humboldt Current food source while raising awareness regarding similar climate-driven shifts in fish communities elsewhere," wrote Moriaki Yasuhara and Curtis Deutsch in a related Perspective



The study is published by <a href="https://www.science.org/">AAAS</a> in the journal <a href="https://www.science.org/">Science</a>.

A new study has found that genes which control limb development are responsible for fingerprints. It was assumed that fingerprints were determined by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-can-breed-plants-with-genes-from-only-one-parent/">genes</a> that are responsible for skin patterning. The research could help scientists understand phenotype and genotype in humans.&nbsp;



Study senior author Sijia Wang is a geneticist at the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.



“People may wonder why our team is working on fingerprints," said Wang. "We started the work purely out of curiosity. But later it turns out fingerprint pattern is associated with genes for limb growth, which are critical for fetal development. This provides another classic example of pleiotropy, when multiple phenotypes are interrelated to each other and are affected by the same genes.”



Although fingerprints are unique to individuals, they all follow the same basic patterns: arches, whorls and loops. Scientists have long thought that fingerprints may have emerged as a way to grip things better and sense textures of objects. They are known to develop during the third month of pregnancy, but this process remains a mystery.



The scientists used a sample of 23,000 people across ethnic groups and discovered at least 43 genomic regions associated with fingerprints. One of the most important regions is controlled by the expression of a gene called EVI1, a gene known for its embryonic limb development.&nbsp;



“We don’t know exactly how the genes shape fingerprint patterns, but it could be determined by the amount of strength from growth that’s put on an embryonic tissue called volar pads that plays an important role in the formation of different patterns of fingerprint,” said study co-first author Jinxi Li, a geneticist at the Human Phenome Institute at Fudan University in Shanghai.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



Interestingly, different fingerprint types were also correlated to length of limbs and digits as well as genetic disorders.



“Many congenital genetic disorders are related to different dermatoglyphic patterns, such as fingerprints," said Li. "Our study suggests that dermatoglyphic patterns are affected by crucial development genes, which provides a strong theoretical basis for this kind of pleiotropy.”



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/">Cell</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

“Organ regeneration offers an exciting opportunity for studying the immune system and to inquire why some species can regenerate organs like the heart or missing limbs while others like humans cannot,” explained Dr. Tatjana Piotrowski.



Zebrafish sensory organ hair cells are an ideal system to investigate the pathways and cell types involved in regeneration since they are easily destroyed with antibiotics and begin regenerating within five hours. This enabled the researchers to identify the exact timing and genetic programs for each anti-inflammatory macrophage activation state.&nbsp;



“Our hypothesis is that human macrophages do not receive the proper chemical activation 'cocktail' to instruct pro-regenerative processes,” said Dr. Nicolas Denans. “Identifying the molecular recipe of macrophage activation in zebrafish may one day enable us to design regenerative immunotherapies in humans.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



“The new evidence is a valuable resource for comparative studies on the genetic programs involved in macrophage-mediated repair and regeneration. In other words, different types of injuries may induce different kinds of inflammatory responses. We want to decipher whether this 'language' is universal or if there are a variety of dialects."

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
