Monarch butterflies could well be on their way to extinction, and well-meaning conservationists breeding butterflies indoors and releasing them into the wild could be doing more harm than good, a new study shows. Researchers from the University of Chicago discovered that monarchs bred in captivity lose their ability to migrate and don’t head south when winter comes like wild monarchs do.
