Long before modern climate records began, a very different Earth existed - one where the icy edges of the Arctic were free of permafrost. This wasn't a minor shift. It was a Northern Hemisphere without frozen ground, stretching all the way to the Arctic Ocean. That past could be a preview of our future.



A new study shows that when Earth’s average temperature was just 4.5˚C warmer than it is today, the Asian continent had no permafrost - not even in its far north. This extent of climate warming is within the range we could reach again in the near future if emissions remain unchecked. 



Researchers from <a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/">Northumbria University</a>, the University of Oxford, Bern University, and the Geological Surveys of Israel and the U.S. worked together to trace the ancient climate shift. They found their evidence in an unlikely place: inside caves beneath the Siberian tundra.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-frozen-clues-hidden-underground">Frozen clues hidden underground</h2>



The team focused on cave formations known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/past-tipping-points-where-the-climate-changed-abruptly/">speleothems</a> - stalagmites and stalactites - which only grow when water can seep through the ground. In regions locked in permafrost, the soil stays frozen solid. That makes speleothem growth impossible. 



So, if these formations exist in caves beneath modern-day permafrost, it means the ground had to be thawed when they formed.



The researchers collected more than 60 mineral samples from caves in the Lena River delta, one of the coldest and most remote areas of northeastern Siberia. 



Using uranium-lead dating, a precise method for measuring tiny traces of radioactive decay, the team determined that the cave minerals had formed about 8.7 million years ago, during the late <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-site-in-australia-indicates-abundant-life-during-the-miocene/">Miocene</a> period.



This means the ground in that region was thawed at the time. Existing global temperature records show that Earth was 4.5˚C warmer than it is today.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-fate-of-arctic-permafrost">The fate of Arctic permafrost</h2>



If Earth warms by that same amount again, the findings suggest that all but the deepest or highest-altitude permafrost would melt.



“Our findings provide direct quantitative evidence that if our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/looking-to-earths-ancient-climate-to-predict-our-future/">climate</a> warms by 4.5˚C, the permafrost currently covering Canada, Siberia, Mongolia, America - in fact much of the Northern Hemisphere - would thaw. Only permafrost in high mountains and deep underground would survive," said Dr Sebastian Breitenbach of Northumbria University.



“This thaw would release billions of tonnes of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-sinks-are-losing-their-ability-to-absorb-co2/">carbon</a> from the ground into the atmosphere, enhancing further warming. This finding is a real warning to us all. It shows how sensitive our climate system is and where we might be headed if we don't act to limit our climate emissions now.”



What makes this especially concerning is the sheer volume of carbon at risk. Scientists estimate that up to 130 billion tonnes are locked in today's permafrost. If that carbon is released as the ground thaws, it won't just add to the warming - it will accelerate it.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-the-arctic-was-permafrost-free">When the Arctic was permafrost-free </h2>



“After much searching, we were fortunate to find well-preserved datable cave deposits in the heart of today’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frozen-worm-comes-back-to-life-after-46000-years/">Siberian permafrost</a>,” said Dr Anton Vaks of the Geological Survey of Israel. 



“We can see that this present-day tundra region experienced a warmer climate, with mean annual global temperatures above 0°C and with permafrost-free conditions." 



According to Dr. Vaks, the evidence from the cave formations indicates that most of the Siberian landmass and likely similar regions in the Northern Hemisphere were permafrost-free when the deposits formed at Taba-Ba’astakh.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-caves-as-climate-time-machines">Caves as climate time machines</h2>



Professor Gideon Henderson of the University of Oxford noted that caves are like time machines. 



“They capture a history of the climate and environment for millions of years of Earth history, which we can now read accurately using precise chemical analyses," said Henderson. 



"By doing so, we can predict the future, using past conditions as an analogue for the future to understand the impact of the warmer world we are heading into.



“This new study provides valuable new constraints on the magnitude of warming required to completely destroy permafrost in the northern hemisphere and remove one of the biggest continental stores of carbon.”



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-60381-5">Nature Communications</a>.

A new study from <a href="https://www.cabi.org/">CABI</a> reports that healthy ecosystems are vital in reducing the risk of future deadly pandemics like COVID-19. According to the experts, pandemic prevention requires that human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biosensors-can-monitor-plant-health-in-real-time/">health</a> be regarded as an "ecological service." They are calling for new frameworks to recognize that protected area managers are on the front lines of public health safety.

The researchers explained that land use changes drive the emergence and spread of pathogens that infect both wildlife and people with severe consequences for the health of the  environment, humans, and animals.

"The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, demonstrates society's inability to respond it a timely manner to novel pathogens. The result is mass human suffering and mortality, bringing substantial moral, ethical and economic dilemmas," wrote the study authors.

"Protected and conserved areas are the most widely used approaches to securing species and ecological integrity, they have a crucial role to play in safeguarding public health."

"From our perspective, a 'healthy' ecosystem is one in which wildlife-pathogen interactions are in balance, wildlife are not overly stressed or concentrated together by land use-induced changes."

The scientists noted that the removal of invasive plant species, which support populations of infectious pathogens, can help to boost the health of ecosystems. 

"In Mauritius, for example, invasive alien plants have reduced the habitat quality of the Mauritian flying fox (Pteropus niger), resulting in increased foraging in agricultural lands and urban environments," said Dr. Witt.

"Krivek et al. showed that non-native plant invasions reduced native fruit production and that weeded forests provide a better habitat for flying foxes. They conclude that their study lends support to invasive alien plant control as a management strategy in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts."

Study lead author Dr. Jamie K. Reaser and her team have proposed several other proactive measures that could help to prevent pandemics, such as monitoring the occurrence of pathogens and diseases in animal or human populations. 

"Nations can no longer treat conservation as a second order priority. COVID-19 shows that we should now recognize that protected areas are at the frontline of public health infrastructure and that their managers are vital to disease prevention," concluded the researchers. "Looking ahead, we have to conserve nature as if our lives depended on it."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://parksjournal.com/">Parks</a>.

There is no doubt that human-induced climate change is profoundly affecting various Earth systems, including the global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meltwater-is-a-driving-force-behind-disappearing-glaciers/">water</a> cycle. For some processes, such as river flow and hydrological extremes, the potential role of climate change is not as well understood. 

In a new study published by <a href="https://www.aaas.org/">AAAS</a>, experts have found evidence that the far-reaching impacts of climate change have altered river flows at a global scale. 

A team of researchers led by Lukas Gudmundsson analyzed thousands of time lapses of low, mean, and high river flows from 7,250 observatories worldwide. The data was collected over the course of 50 years from 1971 to 2010. 

According to the experts, the historical observations revealed recent, spatially complex global hydrological trends. They found that rivers in some regions are drying up and flowing less, others are growing wetter and have more water. 

Using a technique called climate change detection and attribution, the study authors compared the observational data to Earth system model simulations of the terrestrial water cycle. 

The results showed that patterns in global river flow are only consistent with model predictions that account for the effects of radiative forcing from anthropogenic climate change. 

The simulated effects of water and land management alone are not enough to explain the recent patterns, said the researchers. 

The findings suggest that climate change is the main driver of the shifting trends observed in river flows globally. 

In a review of the study, Julia Hall and Rui Perdigão argue that while the attribution to climate change is logical and likely in terms of process understanding of climate dynamics, the evidence provided is "circumstantial." In other words, there were additional processes that could have contributed to the observed trends that were not accounted for in the projections. 

"To improve the explanatory power of such important studies and to generate more confidence in such attribution statements, we need to move beyond these first-order assessments that involve simple proof of consistency and inconsistency when investigating the effects of climate change," wrote Hall and Perdigão.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Honolulu is known as the rainbow capital of the world, while <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hawaii-south-africa-extinctions/">Hawaii</a> is often called the "Rainbow State." In a new report from <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">UH Mānoa</a>, Professor Steven Businger describes why Hawaii is the best place on Earth to experience rainbows. 

"Rainbows are some of the most spectacular optical phenomena in the natural world, and Hawaii is blessed with an amazing abundance of them," writes Professor Businger. 

"Rainbows in Hawaii are at once so common and yet so stunning that they appear in Hawaiian chants and legends, on license plates, and in the names of Hawaiian sports teams and local businesses." 

"Visitors and locals alike frequently leave their cars by the side of the road in order to photograph these brilliant bands of light."

"The cultural importance of rainbows is reflected in the Hawaiian language, which has many words and phrases to describe the variety of manifestations in Hawaii."

"There are words for Earth-clinging rainbows, standing rainbow shafts, barely visible rainbows, and moonbows, among others. In Hawaiian mythology the rainbow is a symbol of transformation and a pathway between Earth and Heaven, as it is in many cultures around the world."

Rainbows are optical illusions that appear when the sun shines onto water droplets. In order to get a glimpse of one on flat ground, the sun must be within about 40 degrees of the horizon. 

Professor Businger explains more about the science of rainbows, as well as the conditions that make Hawaii a hotspot for viewing them. He notes that the state's location in the subtropical Pacific means that the overall weather pattern is dominated by trade winds, with frequent rain showers and clear skies between the showers.

"At night a warm sea surface heats the atmosphere from below, while radiation to space cools cloud tops, resulting in deeper rain showers in the morning that produce rainbows in time for breakfast," said Professor Businger.

Hawaii's mountains also play an important role in forming the stunning light displays. These mountains cause trade wind flow to be pushed up, forming clouds and producing rainfall.

In addition, daytime heating drives island-scale circulations. During periods of lighter winds, showers form over the ridge crests on Oahu and Kauai in the afternoon, which lead to rainbows at sunset.

The fourth contributing factor to frequent rainbows in Hawaii is the clean air that is free of pollution, continental dust, and pollen.

As Professor Businger pursued his passion for photographing rainbows, he envisioned a smartphone app that would be equipped with access to Doppler radar and satellite data so that it could alert users when the conditions are right for rainbow sightings nearby.

"Just as you can chase tornados in the U.S. Midwest, you can chase rainbows in Hawaii," said Professor Businger.

"After a few years of false starts, Paul Cynn and I finally connected with Ikayso, a Hawaiian smartphone app developer in April of 2020. I am very excited to say that our app, called RainbowChase, is now available to the public for free."

Computer modeling experiments from <a href="https://www.kyushu-u.ac.jp/en/">Kyushu University</a> have revealed that surface air temperature will increase without the cooling effect of sulfate aerosols, unless <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/subsea-permafrost-could-unleash-catastrophic-co2-emissions/">CO2</a> levels are simultaneously reduced. 

Worldwide, nations are scrambling to limit CO2 emissions in an effort to mitigate global warming. The new study suggests that without major cuts to greenhouse gas emissions, reductions in air pollution will make it difficult to defeat rising temperatures.

"Air pollution causes an estimated seven million premature deaths per year worldwide, so action is essential, especially in emerging and developing countries, which tend to be most affected," said study co-author Professor Toshihiko Takemura.

"However, reductions in air pollutants must come hand in hand with reductions in greenhouse gases to avoid accelerating global warming."

The study shows that the long-term effects of reductions in pollutants known as sulfate aerosols will cause further increases in surface air temperature at current and increased carbon dioxide levels. This is due to an overall cooling effect that is produced by the light-scattering particles.

To investigate how these aerosols--small particles of sulfur-containing compounds influence the climate, Professor Takemura used a combination of models known as MIROC-SPRINTARS.

While MIROC accounts for many key aspects of the atmosphere, SPRINTARS predicts the mixing of aerosols in the atmosphere. By combining the two models, climate projections can include effects from the scattering and absorption of light by aerosols, as well as the interaction of aerosols with clouds.

The immediate changes to the atmosphere with reduced sulfate aerosols were found to be the same regardless of CO2 levels. However, when looking at changes in the climate and surface temperatures over longer time scales, Professor Takemura found that not only does the surface air temperature increase with a reduction in sulfate aerosols - but this increase is even larger with rising levels of carbon dioxide.

"Although the fast response is similar for both situations, long-term changes caused by more slowly responding factors related to interactions with the oceans and subsequent changes, such as in clouds and precipitation, eventually leads to a bigger temperature increase," explained Professor Takemura.

"Thus, global warming will accelerate unless increases in greenhouse gas concentrations are suppressed as air pollution control measures decrease sulfate aerosol concentrations, further emphasizing the urgency for reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere."

The experts have found that trees in the legume family release vital minerals from the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fruit-eating-mammals-fertilize-the-soil-in-tropical-forests/">soil</a> and share them with neighboring trees. 

"Our research shows that legume trees not only provide valuable nitrogen through their symbioses with bacteria that live in their roots, but interact with free-living soil bacteria allowing nutrients to be chemically released," explained study lead author Dr. Dimitat Epihov.

"We discovered the abundance of a novel group of acid-loving bacteria, key in liberating minerals locked in iron minerals beneath legume trees, and that those benefits are passed on to nearby trees."

The findings are shedding new light on the role legume trees play in safeguarding the function of tropical forests. The research may also help to inform land managers and policy makers on how best to approach reforestation on degraded land.

The researchers discovered that legume trees overcome the challenge of growing on nutrient-poor soils by accelerating weathering processes. The trees acidify the soil and adjust its carbon to nitrogen ratio, ultimately providing easier access to nutrients.

The microbial changes in the soil favor a type of bacteria that breaks down iron, which releases iron-bound minerals critical to tree growth.

Legume trees are also particularly important in the process of forest recovery because they are able to supply fresh nitrogen into soils. This nitrogen gets broken down by bacteria and utilized by trees locally. 

Study co-author Professor David Beerling is the director of the University of Sheffield's Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation.

"By using advanced genomic sequencing techniques we have addressed a long standing puzzle of how fast growing trees access sufficient nutrients to support their growth from nutrient-poor soils," said Professor Beerling.

"The answer, it turns out, is to exploit specialised consortia of soil microbes whose metabolism allows them to efficiently break down rocks and extract nutrients they contain."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

In a new study led by the <a href="https://btiscience.org/">Boyce Thompson Institute</a>, scientists have identified genes that could help domesticated peaches become more resistant to the pressures associated with climate change. 

"Our study provides many candidate genes, showing how the peach has adapted to all kinds of environmental stresses and stimuli," said study co-lead author Professor Zhangjun Fei. 

"Breeders can use this information to develop more resilient domesticated peach trees that cope better with temperature extremes, drought and other harsh, changing conditions imposed by climate change."

The researchers analyzed DNA sequences in wild peaches that have adapted over a long time to specific local conditions across seven different regions in China. The experts identified genes that provide tolerance to extreme conditions, such as drought and ultraviolet radiation.

There is an urgent need to make food crops more resistant to climate change, which is causing many plants to become less productive. 

While many studies have identified genes that enable rice and other food crops to adapt to climate stress, few studies have been focused on major fruit crops. The domesticated peach, Prunus persica, has a global yield of 24.5 million tons per year.

According to the researchers, many of domesticated peach's adaptation genes have been lost as humans bred the plant to focus on traits such as flavor. Wild varieties contain the genetic diversity that is needed to make domesticated peaches more resilient. 

The study was focused on 263 types of wild peaches and landraces, including 218 from the National Peach Germplasm Repository of China and 45 from the Tibetan Plateau. Overall, the team identified more than 2,700 areas of the genome that are linked to 51 local climate factors.

For example, peaches from a region with extremely low winter temperatures had a genetic variant that provides resistance to cold. Wild peaches from a very arid region were found to have multiple genetic variants that regulate their response to drought.

"When a fruiting plant like peach is growing under a stressful condition like drought, its fruit gets sweeter," said Professor Fei. "In this study, we have found the direct genetic link between drought and the sugar content of peach."

Among peach trees from the Tibetan Plateau, the team identified a variant that protects the fruit from the intense UV-B radiation that is found in high altitudes.

"Overall, the genetic information we found could help people breed peach trees that grow in many different and harsh environments, expanding peach's geographic range to new regions," said Professor Fei. 

"Breeders could develop cultivars that thrive on otherwise unused land, bolstering the local economy and bringing more good food to local markets."

The economic benefits of protecting nature are greater than the benefits of exploiting it, according to new research from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a>. The study is the largest of its kind to compare the value of conserving natural sites to potential economic gains from converting them for human use.

"Current rates of habitat conversion are driving a species extinction crisis unlike anything in human history," said study senior author Professor Andrew Balmford.

"Even if you are only interested in dollars and cents, we can see that conserving and restoring nature is now very often the best bet for human prosperity. The findings echo at an operational scale the overall conclusions drawn by the Dasgupta Review."

The team examined dozens of sites across six continents. The results of the analysis have been published just weeks after a landmark report by Cambridge Professor Partha Dasgupta called for the value of biodiversity to be placed at the heart of global economics.

The experts calculated the monetary worth of each site's "ecosystem services," including carbon storage and flood protection. They also measured the value of each site by estimating the potential profits from converting it for production of goods such as crops and timber.

"Stemming biodiversity loss is a vital goal in itself, but nature also fundamentally underpins human well-being," said study lead author Dr. Richard Bradbury. "We need nature-related financial disclosure, and incentives for nature-focused land management, whether through taxes and regulation or subsidies for ecosystem services."

The study revealed that one major economic benefit of natural habitats is driven by their ability to help lower greenhouse gas emissions through processes like carbon sequestration.

Each ton of carbon carries a cost of at least $31 to global society. Based on this rate, which many scientists consider to be too conservative, more than 70 percent of the sites examined for the study have greater monetary value as natural habitats.

Even if the societal cost of carbon is removed completely from their calculations, the researchers found that almost half of the 24 sites were still worth more in their natural state.

"People mainly exploit nature to derive financial benefits. Yet in almost half of the cases we studied, human-induced exploitation subtracted rather than increased economic value," said study co-author Dr. Kelvin Peh of the University of Southampton.

Ten years ago, the scientists designed the Toolkit for Ecosystem Service Site-based Assessment (TESSA), which enables users to measure and assign a monetary value to services provided by a natural site. The new study is focused on results from 62 applications of TESSA around the world, which were mostly either forest or wetland. 

In one case, the scientists discovered that if Nepal's Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park lost its protection and was converted from forest to farmland, it would cut carbon storage by 60 percent and reduce water quality by 88 percent. Combined with other costs, the conversion of this national park would produce a deficit of $11 million per year.

According to study co-author Anne-Sophie Pellier from BirdLife International, the results support the idea that conserving and restoring key biodiversity areas is not only important for safeguarding our natural heritage, but also for providing wider economic benefits to society.

Summer could drag out for nearly six months in the Northern Hemisphere by the end of this century, according to a new study published by the <a href="https://www.agu.org/">American Geophysical Union</a>. The experts report that without efforts to mitigate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-can-overcome-climate-change-by-being-flexible/">climate</a> change, a persistent summer season could have far-reaching impacts on agriculture, human health, and the environment.

Beginning in the 1950s, the four seasons arrived in a predictable and fairly even pattern across the Northern Hemisphere. But now, climate change is causing the seasons to become more irregular. 

The research shows that the unpredictable lengths and start dates of the seasons will become even more extreme in the coming decades under a business-as-usual emissions scenario.

Study lead author Yuping Guan is a physical oceanographer at the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

"Summers are getting longer and hotter while winters shorter and warmer due to global warming," said Guan. He was inspired to investigate changes to the seasonal cycle while working with undergraduate student and study co-author Jiamin Wang. 

To measure changes in the length and onset of four seasons in the Northern Hemisphere, the researchers analyzed historical daily climate data from 1952 to 2011.

The team defined the start of summer as the onset of temperatures in the hottest 25 percent during that time period, while winter began with temperatures in the coldest 25 percent. Next, the experts used climate change models to predict how seasons will shift in the future.

The analysis revealed that during the study period, summer grew from 78 to 95 days, while winter shrank from 76 to 73 days. Spring decreased from 124 to 115 days, and autumn dropped from 87 to 82 days. Overall, spring and summer arrived earlier, while autumn and winter started later. 

The greatest changes in seasonal changes took place in the Mediterranean region and across the Tibetan Plateau. The researchers predict that without climate change mitigation efforts, winter will last less than two months, and the transitional spring and autumn seasons will continue to shrink throughout the remainder of this century.  

"Numerous studies have already shown that the changing seasons cause significant environmental and health risks," said Guan. For example, birds are shifting their migration patterns and plants are flowering at different times, creating potential mismatches between animals and their food sources. Seasonal changes can also be very damaging to crops and budding plants when false springs or late snowstorms occur. 

Furthermore, prolonged warm weather extends pollen and allergy season, as well as the length of time that disease-carrying mosquitoes persist and move northward.

Congwen Zhu is a monsoon researcher at the State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather and Institute of Climate System, who was not involved in the study. He noted that a shift in the seasons could result in more severe weather events

"A hotter and longer summer will suffer more frequent and intensified high-temperature events - heatwaves and wildfires," said Zhu. Additionally, he explained, warmer and shorter winters may cause instability that leads to cold surges and winter storms, much like the recent snowstorms in Texas and Israel.

"This is a good overarching starting point for understanding the implications of seasonal change," said Scott Sheridan, a climate scientist at Kent State University. "I think realizing that these changes will force potentially dramatic shifts in seasons probably has a much greater impact on how you perceive what climate change is doing."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/19448007">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.

Sea level rise will impact populated areas along the coast up to four times faster as a result of land subsidence, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/">University of East Anglia</a>. The investigation is the first of of its kind to analyze global sea-level rise while accounting for measurements of sinking <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/more-than-one-third-of-the-corn-belt-impacted-by-farmland-erosion/">land</a>.

Prior to this study, the impact of subsidence combined with sea-level rise was thought of as a local issue. But the researchers have found the problem worldwide. 

The experts report that over the past two decades, coastal communities have experienced average sea level rise at a rate of 7.8 - 9.9 millimeters per year. Meanwhile, the global average rise was 2.6 millimeters per year.

The researchers said that the impacts for coastal communities are far larger than what has been estimated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Study lead author Professor Robert Nicholls is the director of the UK's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and Chair of Climate Adaptation at the University of East Anglia.

"Climate induced sea-level rise is caused by melting glaciers and thermal expansion of water due to rising global temperatures," said Professor Nicholls.

"Rapid rates of subsidence in deltas and especially cities on deltas are also human-caused, mostly due to groundwater pumping, also oil and gas extraction, and sediment resupply prevented by upstream dams, flood defences, sand extraction or mining."

"About 58 percent of the world's coastal population lives on deltas where land is subsiding. Less than 1 per cent of global coastal population lives where land is uplifting.

"We wanted to look at the big picture globally, to better understand the impact of global sea-level rise combined with measurements of sinking land."

"We found that coastal populations live with sea-level rise at three and four times the global average and that the impacts of sea-level rise being experienced today are much larger than the global numbers being reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)."

According to Professor Nicholls, addressing human-induced subsidence is important in the short term, as it is an essential coastal adaptation to protect people and economies.

The researchers found that the issue is most urgent in coastal communities located in southeastern Asia. This region has many subsiding deltas and coastal flood plains, growing coastal megacities, and more than 70 percent of the world's coastal population.

The team also determined that land subsidence has been stopped or greatly reduced in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Bangkok as a result of reduced groundwater extraction.

"One of the main reasons that Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is being moved to Borneo is because the city is sinking due to groundwater extraction from shallow wells," said Professor Robert Nicholls.

"We hope that our analysis improves the understanding of how sea-level rise and subsidence are hand-in hand for science and coastal management policy worldwide. Jakarta might be just the beginning."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/nclimate/">Nature Climate Change</a>.

In North America alone, invasive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/recent-genetic-connectivity-found-among-chimpanzee-subspecies/">species</a> cause billions of dollars in annual damages. A new study from the <a href="https://www.ualberta.ca/index.html">University of Alberta</a> suggests that limiting the presence of non-native wildlife through functional eradication may be a more effective strategy than total annihilation.

"Rather than trying to completely eliminate invasive species that have spread over large areas, which is very challenging, functional eradication aims to limit their abundances below levels that damage the ecosystem in priority locations," said study lead author Professor Stephanie Green.

"Resources that might otherwise be wasted on attempting complete eradication can be spread to other areas, protecting more places from impacts."

The experts propose using a strategy called functional eradication to limit the impact of destructive and widespread invasive species. For their investigation, the researchers surveyed 232 natural resource managers and invasive species specialists in Canada and the United States.

"More than 90 percent of these folks said the most destructive invaders in their regions were spread beyond a scale at which they could eradicate them, and instead local teams were engaged in a long-term battle to suppress or contain the species," explained Green.

At the same time, only two percent of the study participants said they had identified targets that signified when they had done enough to manage a species.

"This points to a major gap between the needs of the people who must make decisions about invasive species, and the information scientists and monitoring programs are collecting," said study co-author Edwin Grosholz.

According to Green, managing widespread invasive species is a long-term endeavour, but not one without hope. "Involving local communities in the functional eradication process is essential for maintaining the capacity needed to continually suppress these invaders."

The researchers pointed to an example of functional eradication among invasive lionfish. These beautiful Indo-Pacific fish, which are popular in aquariums, have spread throughout the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, where they prey on many native species. 

Financial incentives for catching lionfish are now helping to reduce their population below levels that affect native species in the area. The fish are being caught for food and for use in local art. 

The experts report that similar strategies can be applied to the European green crab, an invasive species found along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts in Canada and the United States, as well as Prussian carp.

"Our study shows that ecologically damaging and widespread invasive species are prime candidates for functional eradication," said Green. "To effectively keep populations down in priority areas, targets need to be based on how many of the invasive species it takes to cause major changes in the ecosystem."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.esa.org/frontiers-in-ecology-and-the-environment/">Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment</a>.

Functional eradication may be the best approach to invasive species

Even though chimpanzees are typically divided into four geographical subspecies, some studies have found evidence of genetic connectivity among all populations. 

In a new study from the <a href="https://www.eva.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology</a>, experts have discovered recent genetic connectivity between chimpanzee subspecies, despite periods of isolation.

"Given the high degree of behavioral variability and flexibility across chimpanzee populations, characterizing range-wide patterns of genetic diversity in chimpanzees is important for understanding how they adapt to changing environmental conditions," explained the researchers.

In collaboration with the Pan African Programme: The Cultured Chimpanzee (PanAf), an international team of experts collected over 5,000 fecal samples from 55 sites across the chimpanzee range in 18 countries. This is by far the most complete sampling of chimpanzees to date.

"Collecting these samples was often a daunting task for our amazing field teams. The chimpanzees were almost all unhabituated to human presence, so it took a lot of patience, skill and luck to find chimpanzee dung at each of the sites," said study senior author Mimi Arandjelovic.

"We used rapidly-evolving genetic markers that reflect the recent population history of species and, in combination with the dense sampling from across their range, we show that chimpanzee subspecies have been connected, or, more likely, reconnected, for extended periods during the most recent maximal expansion of African forests," said study first author Jack Lester.

This means that although chimpanzees were separated into different subspecies in their distant past - prior to human disturbances - the geographic barriers were permeable to chimpanzee dispersal. 

"It is widely thought that chimpanzees persisted in forest refugia during glacial periods, which has likely been responsible for isolating groups of populations which we now recognize as subspecies," explained study co-author Paolo Gratton. 

"Our results from fast-evolving microsatellite DNA markers however indicate that genetic connectivity in the most recent millennia mainly mirrors geographic distance and local factors, masking the older subspecies subdivisions."

According to PanAf co-director Hjalmar Kuehl, the results suggest that the great behavioral diversity observed in chimpanzees is not due to local genetic adaptation but to their reliance on behavioral flexibility to respond to changes in their environment.

At sites that were associated with human disturbances and pressures, the researchers noted signals of reductions in diversity. There were even some locations where no chimpanzees were detected, even though they had been present in recent decades. 

"Although not unforeseen, we were disheartened to already find the influence of human impacts at some field sites where genetic diversity was markedly lower than what we expected," said Lester.

The findings highlight the importance of genetic connectivity for chimpanzees in their recent history. While chimpanzees are adaptable and can survive in human-modified landscapes, they are currently facing multiple threats including habitat loss and diseases. The results of this study indicate that if habitat fragmentation and isolation continue, there will be serious consequences for the genetic health and viability of chimpanzees.

Christophe Boesch, co-director of the PanAf and director of the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation, concluded that every effort should be made to re-establish and maintain dispersal corridors across their range, with perhaps special attention to trans-national protected areas.

Cactus pears could become a source of sustainable food and fuel in places that need these resources the most, according to the <a href="https://www.unr.edu/">University of Nevada, Reno</a>. 

The fact that the plants are also heat and drought resistant, and not to mention capture carbon from the atmosphere, means that cactus pears could serve as an important crop in the face of climate change.

Climate projections show that long-term droughts will increase in duration and severity, which will lead to higher temperatures and less water availability. Crops such as rice, corn, and soybeans have an upper temperature limit, while other traditional crops like alfalfa require more water.

"Dry areas are going to get dryer because of climate change," said Professor John Cushman. "Ultimately, we're going to see more and more of these drought issues affecting crops such as corn and soybeans in the future."

In a previous study funded by the Experiment Station and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Professor Cushman's team conducted the first long-term field trial of Opuntia species. They found that plants including the spineless cactus pear could be used as raw material for biofuels to replace fossil fuels.

The study showed that cactus pears had the highest fruit production while using up to 80 percent less water than some traditional crops.

"Maize and sugar cane are the major bioenergy crops right now, but use three to six times more water than cactus pear," said Professor Cushman. "This study showed that cactus pear productivity is on par with these important bioenergy crops, but use a fraction of the water and have a higher heat tolerance, which makes them a much more climate-resilient crop."

The cactus pear is a versatile perennial crop that works well as a bioenergy crop. The plant also serves as a land-based carbon sink that captures and stores CO2 from the atmosphere. 

"Approximately 42% of land area around the world is classified as semi-arid or arid," said Professor Cushman. "There is enormous potential for planting cactus trees for carbon sequestration. We can start growing cactus pear crops in abandoned areas that are marginal and may not be suitable for other crops, thereby expanding the area being used for bioenergy production."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/17571707">GCB-Bioenergy</a>.

Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

During 2020, average global temperatures matched the hottest year on record. The hurricane season was also record-breaking, with many of the storms intensifying at extraordinary speeds. According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.

Qeshm is separated from the Iranian coast by the Clarence Strait, also known as Khuran.&nbsp;The Hara Forest Protected Area is a network of shallow waterways and forest located between the island and the mainland. This protected region is home to sea turtles, snakes, and more than 150 species of migrating birds.



Qeshm is famous for its wide range of&nbsp;ecotourist&nbsp;attractions, such as the&nbsp;Hara marine forests. According to environmentalists, about 1.5 percent of the world birds and 25 percent of Iran's native <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/female-hummingbirds-avoid-sexual-harassment-by-looking-like-males/">birds</a> annually migrate to the forests, which are the first national geo park in Iran.



Tourists are also drawn to the island to see an age-old Portuguese&nbsp;fort, historic mosques, the&nbsp;Seyyed Mozaffar&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bibi Maryam&nbsp;shrines, and the "Valley of Stars."



The average temperature on the island is 81 degress and the region is often hot and humid. From June to August, the island is described as being oppressively hot. The ideal time to visit is during the winter season.

"Inhambane Bay is a deep inlet into which the small Mutamba River flows," says ESA. "On one side of the bay lies the historical city of Inhambane, capital of the Inhambane Province, while the sister city of Maxixe, the economic capital of Inhambane, sits across from it. The province is the second largest grower of cashews, after Nampula, and it also produces coconut and citrus fruits."



The beaches of Barra and Tofo are popular with tourists. There are also coral reefs along the long coastline of Inhambane, making it an ideal destination for scuba diving and snorkeling.



"Mozambique’s extensive coastline heightens the country’s vulnerability to tropical cyclones that develop in the Indian Ocean as well as storm surge flooding," says ESA.



"More than half of the population lives in low lying coastal areas, putting communities at risk. Inhambane Bay was dangerously close to where Cyclone Idai made landfall in 2019 causing widespread destruction to the country."

As human-induced climate change continues to drive up temperatures, global ice loss is accelerating at an alarming rate. ESA reports that, over the past decade alone, 3.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from the Greenland ice sheet. This is enough to cover the UK with meltwater 15 meters deep.



Based on satellite imagery, researchers determined that Kangerlussuaq entered a new phase of rapid retreat and acceleration in 2017. In their study, published in <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2019.00123/full">Frontiers in Earth Science</a>,&nbsp; the experts report that the glacier's ice front is now at its most retreated position since the early 20th century.



"Given Kangerlussuaq’s previous impacts on both the magnitude and pattern of ice sheet wide mass loss, we predict that its new phase of retreat, acceleration and thinning will markedly enhance the south-east region’s contribution to increasing discharge from the ice sheet," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



"More broadly, accurate forecasting of the ice sheet’s contribution to sea level rise will require a deeper understanding of, and responses to, these non-linear ice dynamic processes."

"As well as absorbing heat, oceans are a natural carbon sink, absorbing a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity. This has led to the acidification of ocean water, threating marine life."



The amount of heat and carbon dioxide soaked up by the ocean depends on specific variables, including phytoplankton, temperatures, waves, salinity, and ice cover. Satellites can be used to measure these variables from space.



"From their unique vantage point, satellites provide key information for understanding the complexities of our planet and monitoring environmental issues," says ESA.

These observations have many applications, such as ship routing, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-modem-ocean-is-a-tough-place-for-whales-to-survive/">ocean</a> current forecasting, and debris tracking.



"A project supported by the Discovery element of ESA’s Basic Activities recently investigated a new technique to measure sea surface topography very precisely," reports ESA.



"The technique involves looking at satellite navigation (GNSS) signals that have been reflected off of the sea surface at very low angles. At these so-called grazing angles, waves and surface roughness have very little impact on the reflection process; the sea surface acts as a very smooth mirror."



Estel Cardellach is the principal investigator at the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia, who first submitted the idea for the project.



“In a mirror-like reflection the phase of the signal can be tracked – it is continuous," said Cardellach. "Different surface heights result in different phase measurements. It gives a very precise measurement of the surface altitude at a few centimetres’ precision.”



The researchers developed a GNSS receiver and set up an experiment in the Balaeric Islands to collect signals from the receiver that were reflected off the sea surface. Ultimately, these signals will provide improved measurements of the shape of the sea surface.
