Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. 



In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. 



Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.



“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.



This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. 



This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.



“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”



Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. 



Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.



The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.



The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. 



Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. 



Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.



For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. 



“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). 



“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. 



Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.



“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.



Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. 



"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. 



“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. 



“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”



To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. 



Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiger-sharks-can-take-a-direct-hit-from-a-major-hurricane/">Sharks</a> attract illegal fishing in protected areas, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>. The researchers found that thousands of sharks have been illegally caught in a Marine Protected Area (MPA) around the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, where fishing has been banned since 2010.

The vast protected area, also known as the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), contains pristine reefs. While data suggests that more than 14,000 sharks were caught as a result of illegal fishing in the MPA from 2010 to 2020, local fishermen say the true number is "considerably higher."

"Enforcement of MPA rules in a large, remote area such as this is extremely difficult," said study lead author Claire Collins.

"Our findings highlight the threat of illegal fishing to sharks in the BIOT MPA, which is home to critically endangered species such as the oceanic whitetip and scalloped hammerhead."

"Fishers often target reef areas, where many of the sharks are juveniles, and taking sharks at this life stage could be especially damaging to species numbers."

Collins said it is important to note that, despite evidence of illegal fishing, the MPA still provides a vital refuge in the Indian Ocean, and shark numbers remain much higher than in most other places. At the same time, many shark species in this region are under intense pressure from fishing.

"Following the recent news that the Maldives was considering lifting its shark-fishing ban, the importance of large areas within the Indian Ocean where shark fishing is banned was brought to everyone's attention," said Collins. 

"This study emphasises the need to ensure that sharks within these important areas are fully protected."

The researchers conducted interviews with fishermen in two Sri Lankan communities that were previously associated with illegal fishing in the BIOT MPA.

The fishermen reported that vessels often fished in the MPA without being detected. According to the study authors, this provides clear evidence that total extraction was considerably higher than the estimate of 14,340 based on detected vessels.

"It is crucial to work with fishing communities to understand where, when and why people fish illegally - and how we can improve deterrence," said study co-author Tom B Letessier.

"For example, we found fishers had very different ideas of the fines they could face, and some felt there were very unlikely to be caught - so improving awareness of the sanctions, in addition to increasing the probability of being caught, could be beneficial."

Efforts are underway to improve enforcement in the MPA, including increased use of satellite tracking of vessels.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/marine-science">Frontiers in Marine Science</a>.

When it comes to achieving net zero climate change targets, rewilding the ocean is just as important as reforestation, according to a new report from the <a href="https://www.mcsuk.org/">Marine Conservation Society</a> (MCS). 

In Britain, more carbon is stored along nearly 200,000 square miles of coastline than what is held in forests across the UK. The experts say that rewilding key marine ecosystems could safely stockpile millions of tons of carbon. 

"Carbon contained in marine and coastal ecosystems must be considered in the same way as our woodlands and peatbog - critical to the UK's carbon strategy," said Dr. Chris Tuckett, MCS director of programmes.

"We're calling on the UK Government and devolved administrations to act with urgency to invest in, co-develop and implement a four-nation blue carbon strategy."

Rewilding is an approach to conservation that focuses on restoring and repairing damaged ecosystems so that nature can recover. This strategy will help to mitigate the impacts of climate change on wildlife.

Up until now, rewilding efforts have been focused on terrestrial ecosystems. The MCS reports that the coastal waters of Britain store 205 million tons of carbon, which is 50 million tons more than what is stored within all of the UK's forests.

In collaboration with Rewilding Britain, the MCS is asking the government to establish nature recovery plans, including the development of shellfish reefs and the restoration of seagrass, saltmarsh, and oyster reefs. 

According to the report, the saltmarsh and seagrass habitats of the British Isles sequester an estimated 43,000 tons of carbon annually. This is between two and four times the rate of carbon sequestration by tropical forests.

The experts are calling for a plan to cut fisheries-related carbon emissions in half by 2030. In addition, they want 30 percent of UK waters to become Highly Protected Marine Areas, with strict regulations on the most damaging activities, such as bottom trawling or dredging.

The researchers found that, without preventive measures, the UK's sea shelf sediments could lose 13 million tons of stored carbon over the next decade.

"We're calling for the rewilding and protection of at least 30% of Britain's seas by 2030," said Rebecca Wrigley, chief executive of Rewilding Britain.

"Allowing a rich rainbow of underwater habitats and their sea life to recover offers huge opportunities for tackling the nature and climate crises, and for benefiting people's livelihoods."

Focusing on three species of mice, the researchers found that each has a different genetic mechanism for desert survival, or living in extreme heat with limited water. 

The research suggests that many species have the capacity to adapt to the hotter and drier conditions associated with climate change.

"To reference a familiar phrase, it tells us that there is more than one way to bake a cake," said study co-author Jocelyn Colella. "In other words, there are several ways for animals to adapt to desert conditions and discovering this genetic flexibility offers a silver lining to all species that will increasingly be forced to acclimate to hotter, drier settings."

The experts compared the genetic mechanisms of cactus and canyon mice, which are both found in desert habitats, and the North American deer mouse, which can be found in colder, wetter climates in the northern United States. 

The researchers expected to find similar genes in each species that were critical for living in desert environments. However, they found that each species uses a different genetic mechanism for desert survival. 

For example, one species adapted through mutational genetic changes over time, while another species exhibited changes in gene expression that occur more quickly.

"We were excited by the findings because if our research had only found one gene that was critical to adapting to warmer, drier conditions it would suggest that it would be challenging for other animals to respond to climate change, but our work says there are multiple evolutionary options that enable desert survival," said Colella.

The findings may also have implications for human health by helping to treat dehydration related illness, which kills millions of people each year. Experts say that even minor dehydration can compromise the kidneys and cause lifelong issues.

"Because mice are physiologically similar to humans, this type of evolutionary work offers important first steps toward identifying and understanding genes that control complex traits like dehydration, which can compromise human kidneys causing lifelong, irreparable damage," said study co-author Professor Matt MacManes.

The study is published in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jhered">Journal of Heredity</a>.

Sharks respond to hurricanes in different ways based on their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-species-of-fanged-frog-found-in-the-philippines/">species</a> and location, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.rsmas.miami.edu/">University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science</a>.  The researchers found that large tiger sharks, in particular, choose not to evacuate before a storm, but instead prepare to feast on other animals that perish.

The experts tracked large sharks in Miami and The Bahamas to investigate how these migratory animals behave in the face of hurricanes and other major storms. 

The researchers analyzed acoustic tag data from tiger sharks, bull sharks, nurse sharks, and great hammerheads before, during, and after Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma in 2017. 

The team investigated whether sharks evacuated shallow coastal habitat during the hurricanes, as has been previously found for smaller sharks elsewhere. 

"Located on the northwest edge of the Little Bahama Bank, Bahamas, an acoustic array consisting of 32 acoustic telemetry receivers tracking tiger sharks sustained a direct hit from Hurricane Matthew in 2016," explained the study authors. "Daily detections of tagged tiger sharks within the array were consistent before and during the hurricane."

The tiger sharks remained in shallow inshore waters, even as the site received a direct hit from the eye of the category-5 Hurricane Matthew. Immediately after the storm, the number of tiger sharks doubled. 

In Biscayne Bay, an array of 32 acoustic receivers tracked bull sharks, nurse sharks, and great hammerhead sharks during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Nearly all of the sharks, with the exception of two nurse sharks, evacuated the shallow waters and could no longer be detected. 

"I was amazed to see that big tiger sharks didn't evacuate even as the eye of the hurricane was bearing down on them, it was as if they didn't even flinch," said Professor Neil Hammerschlag.

"Their numbers even increased after the storm passed. We suspect tiger sharks were probably taking advantage of all the new scavenging opportunities from dead animals that were churned up in the storm."

The researchers noted that global climate change is expected to increase the strength and frequency of storm events. 

"Although aquatic animals can be affected by acute natural disturbances, information on the immediate consequences of these weather systems on the behavioral ecology of highly mobile aquatic predators remains limited."

According to Professor Hammerschlag, how these storms impact the environment, including large sharks, is of interest and conservation concern to many.

Humans have created the "perfect storm" for the emergence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preserving-nature-is-key-for-preventing-future-pandemics/">pandemics</a> like COVID-19, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/">University of East Anglia</a>. The report from Professor Cock Van Oosterhout describes how the world's vast population of people, pets, and livestock supports an optimal breeding ground for zoonotic diseases that are passed from animals to humans.

The research highlights the urgent need for measures to control the transmission of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2, including vaccination passports and reducing meat consumption.

"We humans have been living in a non-sustainable way over the past few centuries. We now have a vast population size - not only of humans but also of domesticated animals and livestock," said Professor Van Oosterhout.

"This makes an ideal breeding ground for the evolution and transmission of zoonotic infectious diseases that jump from an animal to a human host."

According to the study, global livestock biomass is more than 10 times higher than that of all wildlife combined. At the same time, the genetic effective size of the world's livestock is 80 times lower than the minimum viable population size of free-living species.

Professor Van Oosterhout explained that the genetic effective size determines how much genetic variation can be maintained in the population, and this genetic variation is critical to counter the evolution of infectious diseases.

"The combination of high livestock biomass and low genetic variation has tipped the co-evolutionary balance with zoonotic pathogens."

"Habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trade and other human activities have brought many species into contact with each other - and this facilitates a spill-over, spillback and hybridization of the pathogens."

"Given that we are in close contact with our domesticated animals and livestock, there are many opportunities for the spill-over of viruses from animals to humans, and spillback from humans back to animals."

"Altogether, these conditions have created a perfect storm for the evolution and transmission of zoonotic infectious diseases."

According to Professor Van Oosterhout, COVID-19 has shown us that humans are not immune to the evolutionary processes that drive the adaptations of pathogens.

"We urgently need to reset this co-evolutionary imbalance and control the transmission of pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 by using vaccination passports, maximising genetic variation in livestock, and reducing our consumption of animal protein. We also need to be aware of pathogen reservoirs, both locally and globally."

"It is time that we start to recognize that our health, the environment, and our global economy are all closely interlinked. Pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 will continue to evolve when allowed to infect humans, anywhere in the world. In turn, this poses a threat to the human population at large, also in countries that have the infection under control."

"Our society is facing significant threat, and we all need to do what we can both at an individual and societal level to improve our long term prospects as a species. These changes needs to be implemented globally to effectively combat pandemics."

Glacial lake outburst floods will become much more common in the high <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tourists-taking-selfies-with-mountain-gorillas-put-them-at-risk-of-disease/">mountain</a> ranges of Asia, according to a new study from the <a href="https://www.unige.ch/en/university/">University of Geneva</a>. The researchers found that in the coming decades, the flood risk to communities and their infrastructure could almost triple.

The Hindu Kush Himalayan region, often referred to as Earth's third pole, contains the largest number of glaciers outside of the poles. As a result of global warming, the glaciers are melting more rapidly and forming new glacial lakes. 

When water is suddenly released from glacial lakes, outburst floods can devastate communities located downstream. The mountain ranges of the Third Pole span eleven nations, giving rise to potential transboundary natural disasters. 

The researchers have investigated the risk associated with 7,000 glacial lakes across the region.

"Here we provide a holistic assessment of past evolution, present state and modeled future change of glacial lakes and related glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risk across the Third Pole," wrote the study authors. 

"We show that the highest GLOF risk is at present centred in the eastern Himalaya, where the current risk level is at least twice that in adjacent regions. In the future, GLOF risk will potentially almost triple as a consequence of further lake development, and additional hotspots will emerge to the west, including within transboundary regions."

The study revealed that 1,203 of current glacial lakes pose a high to very high risk to downstream communities, most notably in the eastern and central Himalayan regions of China, India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

The researchers found that much of the Third Pole could already be approaching a state of peak risk by the end of this century, or even by mid-century in some regions. Beyond the threat of outburst floods, the lakes will gradually grow closer to steep, unstable mountain slopes that can collapse and trigger small tsunamis. 

"The speed at which some of these new hazardous situations are developing surprised us," said UNIGE Professor Markus Stoffel. "We are talking a few decades not centuries - these are timeframes that demand the attention of authorities and decision-makers."

If global warming continues at the current rate, the number of lakes classified as high or very high risk will increase from 1,203 to 2,963, with new hotspots of risk emerging in the Western Himalaya, Karakorum and into Central Asia, according to the study. 

"These regions have experienced glacial lake outburst floods before, but these events have tended to be repetitive and linked to advancing glaciers," said Professor Stoffel.

"Authorities and communities will be less familiar with the types of spontaneous events we consider here in a deglaciating landscape, so this calls for awareness raising and education on the new challenges that will emerge."

The researchers emphasized the importance of developing disaster risk management strategies to reduce the exposure of people and property. 

"The findings of this research should motivate relevant nations and the international research communities to urgently work together to prevent future glacial flood disasters in the Third Pole region," said Professor Stoffel.

Scientists have discovered a hotspot of bee diversity in the protected Chihuahuan Desert along the United States-Mexico border. The experts have identified more than 470 bee species in a relatively small area that is practically undisturbed by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-development-was-not-always-environmentally-destructive/">human</a> activities.

"We find that the density of bee species in a limited area of 16 km2 far exceeds any other site in the world and amounts to approximately 14% of the bee species described from the United States," wrote the researchers.

The study, published by <a href="https://pensoft.net/">Pensoft</a>, was conducted by Dr. Robert Minckley of the University of Rochester and William Radke of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

Scientists have previously recognized that the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts of North America have high bee biodiversity, but the exact number of species has remained unclear.

In collaboration with students from Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States, the researchers identified more than 70,000 specimens across multiple years. 

"Despite the long intertwined evolutionary histories of bees and plants, bee diversity peaks in the xeric areas of the eastern and western hemispheres and not the tropics, where plant diversity is greatest," wrote the study authors.

"Intensive sampling in the northeast Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico and the United States provide the first quantitative estimate of bee species richness where high diversity had been predicted in North America from museum records."

Without this intensive sampling, it would not have been possible to to get a full picture of bee diversity. 

"There are numbers of reasons why species richness estimates for desert bees are sensitive to sampling duration that broadly apply to biodiversity studies of most desert insects and bees in general," explained the researchers.

"For one, many species, especially those bees that are specialists of one or several host plants, emerge as adults for a brief period per year, are small-bodied with limited dispersal capabilities and occur patchily."

Furthermore, bee diversity is difficult to estimate and compare among studies, which is due to differences in collecting techniques and the size of the study areas. 

According to the experts, more long-term research is needed from habitats that are minimally disturbed by humans to provide baseline data for studies of bees where human impacts are more severe, especially as climate change accelerates.

A team of marine scientists led by <a href="https://www.ncl.ac.uk/">Newcastle University</a> warns that urgent action is needed to protect dolphins and porpoises from fisheries bycatch in European waters. The experts point out limitations in efforts to address the bycatch issue, and are calling on the European Union to adopt a comprehensive plan.

"Despite a number of EU Regulations and Directives, there is no clear European framework to reduce the mortality of dolphins and porpoises in fisheries to sustainable levels. This limitation hampers the effective implementation of effective management actions," explained Professor Emer Rogan of University College Cork.

According to the researchers, the EU's ineffective response is a result of scattered management responsibility for the conservation of dolphins and porpoises in Europe. They also note a lack of quantitative objectives that could guide management action to ensure that bycatch does not exceed sustainable levels.

"The failure to effectively conserve Europe's dolphins and porpoises is not a result of a lack of scientific knowledge or difficulties in monitoring fisheries and bycatch. Instead, it reflects a lack of political will to ensure that these iconic animals are protected from unsustainable mortality in commercial fisheries throughout European waters," said Professor Andrew Read of Duke University. "We can and must do better."

The scientists have outlined a two-step approach that involves measurable management objectives for each population combined with monitoring programs.

"Among the most distinctive species of marine wildlife in Europe, cetaceans are vital to the history and culture of European maritime communities and generate significant revenue from ecotourism," said Professor Per Berggren of Newcastle University's School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.

"However, bycatch of small cetaceans in European fisheries is widespread, including very large numbers of common dolphins in trawl fisheries and bycatch of the critically endangered population of harbor porpoise in the Baltic Sea."

"We highlight this issue now because political attention has been drawn to the bycatch of common dolphins in trawl fisheries in the Bay of Biscay and the bycatch of harbor porpoises in the Baltic. Bycatch is also likely to be high for other populations, and in other areas of the EU, in the Mediterranean and Black Sea," wrote the researchers. 

"This requires that the EU take concrete action to address these and other by‐catch issues in a systematic fashion."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14672979">Fish &amp; Fisheries</a>.

Missing the temperature targets set forward by the Paris Agreement will lead to an irreversible tipping point in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-icebergs-affect-seawater-and-ocean-currents-far-from-the-continent/">Antarctica</a>, according to the authors of a new study. At the current rate of global warming, Antarctic ice loss will trigger unstoppable sea level rise.

Study lead author Rob DeConto is the co-director of the School of Earth &amp; Sustainability at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a>. He said that if the world continues to warm, the huge glaciers in Antarctica could begin behaving like their smaller counterparts in Greenland, which would be disastrous in terms of sea level rise.

The researchers used a computer model to project the response of the Antarctic Ice Sheet to several different warming scenarios, including the Paris Agreement target of two degrees Celsius of warming and an aspirational 1.5 degree scenario. The team also modeled the impacts of three degrees of warming, which the world is currently on track to exceed.

The model showed that the impact of three or more degrees of warming would drastically accelerate the pace of sea-level rise by 2100. 

The experts warn that if global warming continues on its current trajectory, a tipping point will be reached by 2060, past which the consequences would be "irreversible on multi-century timescales."

If the 1.5 and two degree Paris Agreement temperature targets are achieved, the Antarctic Ice Sheet will contribute between 6 and 11 centimeters of sea level rise by 2100. However, the model showed that the current rate of global warming will cause a major jump in melting.

Unless ambitious action is taken to mitigate rising temperatures by 2060, no type of human intervention will be able to prevent Antarctic ice from contributing 17 to 21 centimeters of sea-level rise by the end of this century. 

On longer timescales, the contribution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet will reach a globally catastrophic level of 10 meters or more by 2300 if global warming continues at the current rate.

According to DeConto and colleagues, the very architecture of the Antarctic Ice Sheet itself plays a key role in ice loss. The sheet naturally flows downhill into the ocean, where it begins to melt. This melting is limited by a ring of ice shelves, which act as dams that keep the ice sheet from sliding rapidly into the ocean. 

But if global warming is not slowed, the risk of the protective ice shelves melting will increase significantly, and their collapse would trigger rapid Antarctic melting.

"These results demonstrate the possibility that unstoppable, catastrophic sea level rise from Antarctica will be triggered if Paris Agreement temperature targets are exceeded," wrote the study authors. 

"It's critical to be proactive in mitigating climate change now through active international participation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and by continuing to ratchet down proposed policies to meet the ambitious Paris Agreement targets," said study co-author Daniel M. Gilford. 

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

A new study published by <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/">Wiley</a> suggests that artificial light at night disrupts communication and navigation among migratory birds. The researchers found that migratory thrushes were using flight calls much more frequently over brightly lit urban areas.

"Migratory birds are subject to many pressures during their life cycle and many are declining as a consequence," noted the study authors. 

"Evidence from North America shows that for species that migrate at night, bright artificial light sources associated with urban areas can disrupt natural movement patterns, leading to direct and indirect fitness consequences."

The researchers set out to measure how nocturnally migrating thrushes in the UK respond to artificial light at night.

"We used passive acoustic recorders deployed across a gradient of artificial lighting to record the flight calls of three thrush species, with an expectation of greater call rates over brightly lit areas. We trained a convolutional neural network automatically to locate and identify thrush calls in the audio recordings," explained the researchers.

The data revealed that the nighttime call rates of migratory thrushes were up to five times higher over the brightest urban areas compared with darker villages.

The results add to a growing collection of research exposing the dangerous and disruptive consequences of light pollution for birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and even humans.

Study co-author Dr. Simon Gillings is the Head of Population Ecology and Modeling at the <a href="https://www.bto.org/">British Trust for Ornithology</a>.

"We harnessed the respective strengths of citizen science, passive acoustic monitoring, and machine learning to gather evidence of the impact of artificial light at night on migratory birds," said Dr. Gillings. 

"Finding that even modest urban areas without high-rise buildings can influence migration highlights the need for improved management of urban lighting."

According to the researchers, their results confirm that monitoring flight calls can provide valuable information on the timing of nocturnal migration, but that the effects of artificial lighting must be taken into account in any comparisons of abundance across sites.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/1474919x">Ibis</a>.

Savanna is taking over parts of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-carbon-loss-in-brazilian-amazon-tied-to-degradation/">Amazon</a> rainforest as a result of recurring forest fires, according to a new study published in the journal Ecosystems. The researchers, led by Bernardo Monteiro Flores of <a href="https://ufsc.br/">UFSC</a>, investigated the impacts of wildfires on vegetation and soil quality over the last four decades. 

The study revealed that the future of the rainforest is greatly threatened by fire activity, even in well-conserved areas that are unaffected by deforestation.

“The edges of the Amazon Rainforest have long been considered the most vulnerable parts owing to expansion of the agricultural frontier. This degradation of the forest along the so-called ‘deforestation arc’ (a curve that hugs the southeastern edge of the forest) continues to occur and is extremely troubling," Flores told <a href="https://agencia.fapesp.br/">Agência FAPESP</a>.

"However, our study detected the appearance of savannas in the heart of the Amazon a long way away from the agricultural frontier." 

The research was focused on an area of floodplains surrounding the middle Negro River near Barcelos, where areas of white-sand savanna are expanding. The experts blame this expansion on the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires associated with climate change. 

“We mapped 40 years of forest fires using satellite images, and collected detailed information in the field to see whether the burned forest areas were changing,” said Flores. 

“When we analyzed tree species richness and soil properties at different times in the past, we found that forest fires had killed practically all trees so that the clayey topsoil could be eroded by annual flooding and become increasingly sandy.”

The researchers also determined that, as burned floodplain forest recovers, there is a major shift throughout the vegetation in which native herbaceous cover expands, forest trees disappear, and white-sand savanna tree species become dominant.

According to Flores, white-sand savannas are part of the Amazon ecosystem, covering about 11 percent of the biome. The seeds of savanna plants are distributed by water, fish, and birds, and are more likely to germinate when they reach a burned area with degraded soil than forest species.

“Our research shows native savanna cover is expanding and may continue expanding in the Amazon. Not along the ‘deforestation arc,' where exotic grasses are spreading, but in remote areas throughout the basin where white-sand savannas already exist,” said Flores.

The researchers emphasized that the Amazon floodplain forest is far less resilient than upland terra firma forest - burning more easily and degrading more quickly.  

“Floodplain forest is the ‘Achilles heel’ of the Amazon,” said study co-author Professor Milena Holmgren. “We have field evidence that if the climate becomes drier in the Amazon and wildfires become more severe and frequent, floodplain forest will be the first to collapse.”

A drier climate and more frequent fires have already arrived in the Amazon. The researchers found that during the severe 2015-16 El Niño event, wildfires in the middle Negro area burned down an area seven times larger than the total area destroyed by fire in the preceding 40 years.

“The additional loss of floodplain forest could result in huge emissions of carbon stored in trees, soil and peatlands, as well as reducing supplies of resources used by local people, such as fish and forest products," said Flores.

"The new discoveries reinforce the urgency of defending remote forest areas. For example, a fire management program should be implemented to reduce the spread of wildfires during the dry season."

In a new study led by <a href="https://en.ru.is/">Reykjavik University</a>, scientists have found microplastics in the remote and pristine area of Europe's largest ice cap, the Vatnajokull <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/himalayan-rock-glaciers-are-far-more-important-than-expected/">glacier</a> in Iceland.

It is not yet understood how microplastics may affect the melting and deformation of glaciers. This means they could potentially influence future meltwater and sea level rise. 

Microplastics have never been found in the vicinity of the Vatnajökull glacier before. The team used optical microscopy and μ-Raman spectroscopy to detect and identify various sizes and types of plastic particles. 

So far, most studies on microplastics have been focused on ocean pollution, and little research has been conducted to investigate plastic in the Earth's polar ice caps. Microplastic particles have been found in the Italian Alps, the Ecuadorian Andes, and in icebergs at Svalbard. 

Study first author Dr. Hlynur Stefansson is an associate professor at the RU Department of Engineering. She said that it is of vital importance to understand the distribution of microplastic, as well as its short and long term effects on ice dynamics.

The findings of the study confirm that microplastic particles are carried and distributed through the atmosphere. 

"We do not understand well enough the pathways for microplastic particles in our environment. Is the plastic carried by snow and rain? We need to know more about the causes," said Dr. Stefansson.

She noted the the samples the team collected are from a very remote and pristine location in Vatnajokull glacier, with no easy access, so it is unlikely the site was directly polluted by human activities.

"We also need to know much more about the short and long-term effects of microplastic on the dynamics of the ice and if they contribute to the melting of glaciers. If that is the case, it will play a critical role in future meltwater contribution to the oceans and rising sea levels."

Dr. Stefansson explained that the plastic particles degrade very slowly in the cold glacier environment, and can accumulate and persist in the glaciers for a very long time. 

"Eventually, however, they will be released from the ice, contributing to pollution in rivers and the marine environment. It is therefore very important to map and understand the presence and dispersal of microplastics in glaciers on a global scale."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/journal/sustainability">Sustainability</a>.

Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."

The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.

Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
