The first weekend of September offers two dazzling lunar shows, depending on where you live. Across parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, the skies will host a total lunar eclipse.&nbsp;



For more than five hours, Earth will line up perfectly between the Sun and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-is-the-black-moon-in-2025-and-why-does-it-occur/">Moon</a>, casting a deep shadow across the lunar surface.&nbsp;



During totality, which will last 82 minutes, only red light will filter through Earth’s atmosphere and reach the Moon. That’s what gives the lunar face its striking copper hue, earning the name “blood moon.”



Here in the United States, the eclipse will stay below the horizon. The wait won’t be long, though. According to <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>, the next blood moon lunar eclipse that will be visible from America will occur on March 3, 2026.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-a-total-lunar-eclipse">Understanding a total lunar eclipse</h2>



A total <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/total-lunar-eclipse-will-paint-the-moon-blood-red-tomorrow/">lunar eclipse</a> happens when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the Moon’s surface. 



Instead of going completely dark, the Moon usually glows a deep red or copper color. That’s because Earth’s atmosphere bends and filters sunlight, letting only the longer, reddish wavelengths reach the Moon. 



It’s the same effect that makes sunsets look red, but in this case the Earth is creating a “sunset glow” that wraps all the way around and paints the Moon.



Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye - no special glasses are needed. They also last much longer: totality can stretch for over an hour, compared to just a few minutes for a total solar eclipse. 



Anyone on the night side of Earth can see it, which makes <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harvest-moon-2024-will-feature-a-partial-lunar-eclipse/">lunar eclipses</a> more common to experience. 



For astronomers, these events are chances to study Earth’s atmosphere, since the way light bends and colors the Moon gives clues about dust, clouds, and even volcanic ash floating around our planet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-final-full-moon-of-summer">Final full moon of summer</h2>



On Sunday, September 7, the Corn Moon will reach its peak illumination at 2:09 p.m. EDT. That moment takes place below the horizon for U.S. viewers, but the full moon will climb into the eastern sky, glowing bright and round by nightfall.



The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that the Moon will look nearly full on both the nights before and after September 7. For sky watchers, that means an extended window to catch a glimpse.



Near the horizon, the Moon may appear golden or orange for a while, but as it rises higher, the glow will shift to a clearer white.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-is-it-called-the-corn-moon">Why is it called the Corn Moon?</h2>



The name Corn Moon traces back to the Algonquin tribes in the northeastern United States. 



Late summer was the time to gather their staple crops of corn, beans, pumpkins, squash, and wild rice.&nbsp;The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildlife-vehicle-collisions-surge-during-full-moon-nights/">full moon</a> served as a seasonal marker for this period of abundance and labor.



European traditions gave their own names to the September moon. Some called it the Fruit Moon, marking the ripening of orchard crops.



Others referred to it as the Barley Moon in recognition of the grain harvest. Each name reflects a calendar rooted in the cycles of planting and gathering.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-harvest-moon-is-next">The Harvest Moon is next</h2>



It’s tempting to confuse the Corn Moon with the better-known Harvest Moon, but the two aren’t the same.&nbsp;



The Harvest Moon is the full moon that falls closest to the autumn equinox. In 2025, that moment comes on October 7, which also happens to be the first supermoon of the year.



By contrast, the Corn Moon always comes in September. It marks the bridge between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/this-weekends-sturgeon-moon-marks-a-turning-point-in-summer/">summer</a> and fall, when fields in the Northern Hemisphere are still heavy with late crops, but the days are growing shorter.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lunar-calendar-of-2025">The lunar calendar of 2025</h2>



This year’s lunar calendar is a busy one. September’s Corn Moon is the ninth full moon of 2025.



There will be 12 full moons in total, including three supermoons. Two of those full moons will coincide with total lunar eclipses, offering the dramatic blood moon display.



The calendar has long served as a guide for both farmers and sky watchers. Each name tells a story about the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seasonal-timing-can-change-quickly-over-short-distances/">season</a> - what’s ripening, what’s ready, and what’s just around the corner.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-seasonal-marker-in-the-sky">A seasonal marker in the sky</h2>



For the Algonquin and other Native American tribes, September’s full moon was more than a sign of the corn harvest. Some called it the Corn Maker Moon or Corn Harvest Moon.&nbsp;



These names reflected not only the practical importance of gathering food but also the deep connection between community life and the cycles of nature.&nbsp;



The moon served as both a calendar and a cultural marker, guiding traditions that tied the sky to the land.

In a very short period of time, the term “<a href="http://www.earth.com/news/people-believe-fake-news/">fake news</a>” has gone from an almost oxymoronic turn of phrase to become a crisis for media outlets around the world. Countless fake news generators have sprung up in the last year, filling social media pages and general discourse with biased, nonfactual information. While websites such as Politifact and Snopes attempt to debunk fake news as it comes out – the process is long, tedious, and overwhelming.

That is why researchers in <a href="https://www.csail.mit.edu/">MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab</a> (CSAIL) and the <a href="https://www.qcri.org/">Qatar Computing Research Institute</a> (QCRI) set out to find a new approach to debunking fake news. Their idea was not to focus on each fact or lack thereof individually, but to assess the news sources themselves. With this approach, they have demonstrated a new system that uses machine learning to determine if a source is factually correct or politically biased. 

“If a website has published fake news before, there’s a good chance they’ll do it again,” says postdoctoral associate Ramy Baly, the lead author on a new paper about the system. “By automatically scraping data about these sites, the hope is that our system can help figure out which ones are likely to do it in the first place.” According to Baly, the system only needs about 150 articles to reliably detect if a news source is trustworthy.

This system is the result of a collaboration between computer scientists at MIT CSAIL and QCRI, which is part of the <a href="https://hbku.edu.qa/">Hamad Bin Khalifa University</a> in Qatar. Analysis of the system’s own accuracy in determining factuality showed that it was 65 percent accurate at detecting whether an outlet has a high, medium, or low level of factuality. It also was roughly 70 percent accurate at detecting if an outlet leaned to the right, left, or was in the middle.

The researchers found that the most reliable ways to detect fake news and biased reporting were to assess the common linguistic features across the source’s stories – including sentiment, complexity, and structure. Fake news outlets were more likely to use language that was hyperbolic, subjective, and emotional. The authors say that the system also found correlations with an outlet’s Wikipedia page and its credibility. The longer pages that had fewer target words such as “extreme” or “conspiracy theory” were found to be more accurate.

However, co-author Preslav Nakov does state that this system is very much a work-in-progress, and that – even if its own accuracy was improved – it would be best to have it work alongside traditional fact-checkers. “If outlets report differently on a particular topic, a site like Politifact could instantly look at our ‘fake news’ scores for those outlets to determine how much validity to give to different perspectives,” says Nakov, a senior scientist at QCRI.

The research team also formed a new open-source dataset of more than 1,000 news sources annotated with factuality and bias score. This is the world’s largest database of its kind. Moving forward, the team plans to assess whether the English-trained system can be adapted to other languages and also determine religion-specific biases.

“It's interesting to think about new ways to present the news to people,” says Nakov. “Tools like this could help people give a bit more thought to issues and explore other perspectives that they might not have otherwise considered.”

Many of today's electronic devices such as televisions, <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/teens-losing-sleep-smartphones/">smartphone</a>s, and computer monitors have displays made with liquid crystals, which are substances that flow like liquids but still have crystal-like structures. While liquid crystals play an important part in modern technology, researchers have discovered that these substances may have played a much more critical role in ancient history by helping to support the earliest life on Earth.

The experts found evidence that liquid crystals helped in the assembly of the first biomolecules on the planet. The team demonstrated that short RNA molecules can form liquid crystals that promote growth into longer chains.

Scientists have speculated that life on Earth originated in an “RNA world,” where RNA carried genetic information and conducted metabolism before DNA or proteins emerged. To support this theory, catalytic RNA strands, or “ribozymes,” have been found in modern genomes. 

Ribozymes are about 16 to 150 nucleotides in length, and the scientists set out to investigate how these sequences assembled in a time before ribozymes or proteins existed. The research team, led by Tommaso Bellini, speculated that liquid crystals could have helped to guide short RNA precursors to form longer strands.

The researchers explored different scenarios under which short RNAs could self-assemble. Short RNA sequences, at just six or 12 nucleotides long, were found to spontaneously arrange into liquid crystal phases at high concentrations. Liquid crystals formed even more rapidly when the researchers added magnesium ions, which stabilized the crystals.

Once the RNAs were held together in liquid crystals, a chemical activator could efficiently join their ends into much longer strands. This also helped to prevent the formation of circular RNAs that could not be lengthened further. 

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.acsnano.org/">ACS Nano</a>.

Liquid crystals may have helped in the creation of life itself

Victor and Isabel, the world's first <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/first-test-tube-lion-cubs/">lion cubs</a> to be conceived through artificial insemination, are described as being “healthy and normal” five weeks after they were born in South Africa. The outcome suggests that this reproductive alternative could be an option to help save lions and other endangered cat species.

Andre Ganswindt is the director of the Mammal Research Institute at the <a href="https://www.up.ac.za/">University of Pretoria</a>, where the experiment was developed. 

“There are tremendous threats to wildlife due to the loss of habitat and anthropogenic pressures which also affect big cats,” said Ganswindt. “That is why a number of species are listed as vulnerable or endangered, but this research could combat the threat of extinction facing several types of big cat around the world.”

After 18 months of preparation such as closely monitoring the female lion's hormone levels, she was artificially impregnated.

“We collected sperm from a healthy lion, and luckily it was successful,” said Ganswindt. “There were several attempts, but surprisingly it didn't take too much effort.”

The African lion is currently listed as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. The West African lion subpopulation is classified as “critically endangered.”

A news release from the University of Pretoria explains why the development of artificial insemination protocols are needed to protect lions from extinction. 

“Although African lions normally breed quite well in captivity, the wild population is highly fragmented and suffers progressively from isolation and inbreeding. Indiscriminate killing and prosecution, habitat loss and prey depletion, epidemic diseases, poaching, and trophy hunting threaten the extinction of these existing wild populations.”

The <a href="http://www.menopause.org/">North American Menopause Society</a> (NAMS) Annual Meeting, which takes place in San Diego this week, will address the question of why women usually live longer than men. Experts will review the latest studies on the protective effects of sex hormones and estrogen, and will provide tips for improving telomere health to slow down the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/halting-aging-rejuvenating-cells/">aging</a> process.


While the gender gap in longevity is not fully understood, it may be at least partially attributed to the effect of estrogen on heart health. This hormone is believed to help protect women from heart disease for a longer period in life.

To investigate why women may age more slowly than men, researchers looked at the rate of cellular aging. From birth, women have longer telomeres, which are the endcaps of DNA strands that protect chromosomes from deterioration. 

The significance of telomeres in living a longer, healthier life has been long understood. Recently, there is a growing collection of studies focused on how telomere length is damaged and what can be done to prevent this damage. Since longer telomeres predict less cardiovascular disease, they are indicative of a longer life for both men and women.

In her Keynote Address at the upcoming meeting, Dr. Elissa Epel from the <a href="https://www.ucsf.edu/">University of California in San Francisco</a> will provide a detailed look at the factors that influence telomere length, with an emphasis on women's reproductive health, hormones, and mental health. 

“Some experimental studies suggest estrogen exposure increases the activity of telomerase, the enzyme that can protect and elongate telomeres,” said Dr. Epel.

Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, the NAMS executive director, added: “We look forward to what promises to be a fascinating presentation with implications for slowing telomere attrition and age-related conditions.”

The study is published in <a href="http://www.menopause.org/publications/professional-publications/menopause-journal-contents/menopause-journal-nonmembers">Menopause: The Journal of the North American Menopause Society</a>.

A recent discovery of prehistoric rock carvings, or petroglyphs, in India has archaeologists baffled. These carvings, found beneath the soil across 52 villages in India’s western state of Maharashtra, may be evidence of a previously unknown civilization that lived tens of thousands of years ago. But that isn’t the only thing that has scientists excited.

The petroglyphs are filled with depictions of animals, which leads archaeologists to suspect that they were created by a hunter-gatherer community. But the details of these animals have the scientific community confused, as none of the animals depicted are native to the region. These carvings include pictures of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/basking-sharks-swimming-skills/">sharks</a>, whales and turtles, along with hippos and rhinoceroses – which are not native to India.

It’s possible that this ancient civilization may have migrated to India from Africa, where many of the depicted animals can be found. But it’s also possible that the large, non-native mammals in these carvings once roamed between continents, covering a much bigger area than previously thought.

These carvings could be the oldest petroglyphs ever found – dating back to the year 10,000 B.C. – and they were found by the thousands throughout the Konkan region of western Maharashtra. The expedition that discovered them was led by Sudhir Risbood and Manoj Marathe after they’d observed a few nearby, according to the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/">BBC</a>.

“We have not found any pictures of farming activities,” says Tejas Garge, director of the Maharashtra state archaeology department. “But the images depict hunted animals and there’s detailing of animal forms. So this man knew about animals and sea creatures. That indicates he was dependent on hunting for food.”

This discovery has raised questions about the prehistoric dispersal of some of the animals, as well as the people who once inhabited the region. Since the discovery was made, researchers have been working to document and preserve the thousands of ancient carvings. The state government recently designated 240 million rupees ($3.2 million) to study 400 of the petroglyphs in greater detail. Needless to say, there is a lot of interest surrounding these ancient carvings.

Ancient rock carvings raise questions of mysterious hunter-gatherers

Weak pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF)-based therapies use weak magnetic fields on body tissues to improve the symptoms of a number of diseases – including <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/depression-anxiety-heart-attack/">depression</a> and Parkinson’s disease. 

However, it is still unclear whether they actually provide any beneficial effects, and the mechanisms by which they work are still unknown. But a new study published in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/">PLOS Biology</a> may have just found the previously undiscovered mechanism.

Researchers from <a href="https://www.xavier.edu/">Xavier University</a> have reported that the effects of exposure to PEMFs may be determined by a protein related to one that helps birds migrate. Margaret Ahmad and colleagues knew that the magnetic field strength used in PEMF-based therapies was below what is required to cause neurons to fire. Because of this, they wanted to see whether the effects might instead be a result of activation of a protein that senses magnetic fields. An example of these types of proteins is a group called cryptochromes, which are found in a wide variety of organisms, and help orient birds to Earth’s magnetic field during their migration.

When the researchers subjected human cells to a week magnetic field, they found that the cells increased their production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) – a group of molecules involved in cell signaling, among other roles. They found that the increase in ROS slowed cell growth, and led to the expression of numerous ROS-responsive genes. 

With these results, the study’s authors believe they have found a new mechanism to explain the effects of weak magnetic fields on human cells. Their findings also fit with the proposed harmful effects of PEMFs on human health, as the cryptochrome-induced production of ROS can be damaging in excess. Additionally, the potential benefits of PEMF-based therapy may be due to the signaling function of ROS, which is induced by activation of cryptochrome. Because both cryptochrome activation and ROS production can be measured, these results may lead to further examination and understanding of crpytochrome’s contribution to both the benefits and harms of exposure to PEMFs. 

“Our findings provide a rationale for optimizing low-strength magnetic fields for novel therapeutic applications,” says Ahmad. “At the same time, they suggest that alone, or in combination with other environmental triggers of ROS production, such fields have the potential to negatively impact public health.”

The authors are careful to state that this study was not perfect, and future studies can certainly improve on their methods.

 “Should this paper be independently replicated by multiple labs it will undoubtedly be influential,” say Lukas Landler and David Keays in a “Primer” article accompanying the study. “It is conceivable that leukemia associated with 50 Hz power lines, PEMF mediated ROS generation, and animal magnetoreception are mechanistically similar – each requiring the presence of cryptochrome... It may well transpire that cryptochrome is a magnetosensor, but one with a sinister side.”

Experts at <a href="https://ww2.mc.vanderbilt.edu/">Vanderbilt University Medical Center</a> have investigated the brain networks involved in free will using a new technique known as lesion network mapping. The study revealed that all brain activity related to the power to act, or volition, falls within the same <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/brain-sleep-experiences-genetics/">brain network</a>.

The experts teamed up with researchers from <a href="https://hms.harvard.edu/">Harvard Medical School</a> to analyze  cases of akinetic mutism, patients who lack the motivation to move or speak, and alien limb syndrome, which is when patients feel that their movement is generated by someone else.

The study revealed that even though injuries disrupting volition can occur in many different locations, they are still part of the same brain network. Furthermore, injuries that disrupt agency, or a feeling of responsibility for carrying out those actions, fall within a separate network.


Dr. Ryan Darby is an  assistant professor of Neurology at Vanderbilt and the lead author of the study.

“Our approach challenges the assumption that neuropsychiatric symptoms should localize to one brain region, and instead shows that these symptoms localized to interconnected brain networks,” said Dr. Darby. “Once we understand that agency and volition localize to brain networks, can we then take that knowledge and develop a new approach to treating a symptom?”

The researchers concluded that stimulation in different parts of brain networks could change free will perception.

The team also studied psychiatric patients with disrupted free will, including motor conversion disorder and catatonia. These psychiatric patients had neuroimaging abnormalities in brain networks associated with volition and agency.

“There are very few approaches where you can compare a similar type of symptom in a neurological patient and a psychiatric patient,” said Dr. Darby. “Our study shows the promise of using our network localization method in neurological patients to better understand symptoms in psychiatric patients. That being said, it's the first time we have used our technique with neuroimaging abnormalities in psychiatric patients. It would require further study and validation, but I think the promise is there.”

The study is published in the <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

The newest innovation in cube technology – the RainCube – is actually more weatherman than cube. This satellite is no bigger than a shoebox, yet it contains enough experimental technology to see storms by detecting rain and snow, and does so from way up above our heads.

The RainCube is a small satellite prototype that could one day be the first of a fleet of RainCubes to help us monitor severe storms and improve the accuracy of weather forecasts – as well as track <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/severe-storms-climate-change/">climate change</a> over time. 

“We don’t have any way of measuring how water and air move in thunderstorms globally,” says Graeme Stephens, director of the <a href="https://climatesciences.jpl.nasa.gov/">Center of Climate Sciences at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> in Pasadena, California. “We just don’t have any information about that at all, yet it’s so essential for predicting severe weather and even how rains will change in a future climate.”

The device is able to “see” objects using radar, and has an umbrella-like antenna to send our specialized radar signals that bounce off raindrops, and reveals a picture of what the inside of a storm looks like. “The radar signal penetrates the storm, and then the radar receives back an echo,” explains Principal Investigator Eva Peral. “As the radar signal goes deeper into the layers of the storm and measures the rain at those layers, we get a snapshot of the activity inside the storm.”

RainCube was first deployed into low-Earth orbit from the International Space Station in July. It sent back its first images of a storm over Mexico in August, and would later send a second wave of images in September in the first rainfall of Hurricane Florence.

However, the RainCube was never designed to track entire storms by itself. This first deployment was simply a demonstration of how the mini-rain radar could work. Many more of these satellites could be sent into orbit, tracking storms and relaying updated information every few minutes. 

“We actually will end up doing much more interesting insightful science with a constellation rather than with just one of them,” Stephens says. “What we’re learning in Earth sciences is that space and time coverage is more important than having a really expensive satellite instrument that just does one thing.”

This new technology could potentially lead to an entirely novel way for us to observe our planet using many small radars. 

“There’s a plethora of ground-based experiments that have provided an enormous amount of information, and that’s why our weather forecasts nowadays are not that bad,” says Simone Tanelli, the co-investigator for RainCube. “But they don’t provide a global view. Also, there are weather satellites that provide such a global view, but what they are not telling you is what's happening inside the storm. And that’s where the processes that make a storm grow and/or decay happen.”

A new berry may soon be coming to your supermarket thanks to gene editing technology.

Groundcherries are a little-known fruit native to Central and South America. With a distinct and delicious taste, groundcherries are well-loved by those who have been lucky enough to try them, but because they have remained undomesticated, the berry has yet to reach mainstream markets.

This makes the groundcherry an orphan crop, a group of plants that are grown locally in small-scale. Quinoa is a rare example of an orphan crop that can be found in supermarkets across the world, but most orphan crops are only known in their native regions.

Researchers from <a href="https://www.hhmi.org/">Howard Hughes Medical Institute</a> and the <a href="https://btiscience.org/">Boyce Thompson Institute</a> recently published a study outlining plans to make the groundcherry a feasible option for large-scale agricultural production.

According to the results, published in the journal Nature Plants, it’s now possible with gene editing and genomic research to take a wild plant and domesticate it in a matter of years.

“I firmly believe that with the right approach, the groundcherry could become a major berry crop,” said Zachary B. Lippman, an author of the study. “Some scientists might consider the idea a reach, he adds. “But I think we're now at a place where the technology allows us to reach.”

Groundcherries are drought tolerant and have a complex flavor, according to Lippman, which makes them an excellent candidate for large-scale production.

However, getting the plants to a place where they can be grown as a major crop through using traditional breeding methods would be a costly and time-consuming investment.

Instead, the researchers turned to gene editing to see if it was possible to speed up the domestication process for the groundcherry.

In order to domesticate the groundcherry, the researchers used genome sequencing, gene editing CRISPR technology, and gene identification to improve the plant.

As it’s grown now, the groundcherry needs to be more compact, with larger fruits and flowers and a more robust flavor to be more appealing to a mass market, according to the researchers.

This study is the first of its kind that showcases how genome editing could make orphan crops widely available.

The researchers say that some traditional plant breeding will be needed to make the groundcherry ready for large-scale production.

Exactly when the groundcherry will be available at your local supermarket, the researchers can’t say, but the study gives hope to creating new, innovative methods for improving crops and making orphan crops mainstream.

Little-known berry could become the next big fruit

A new berry may soon be coming to your supermarket...

An international research team led by <a href="http://www.anu.edu.au/">Australian National University</a> has found that the productivity of corn can be boosted by targeting the enzyme in charge of capturing <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/co2-emissions-cost-us-economy/">CO2</a> from the atmosphere.

Corn is a staple food for billions of people around the world, with more maize grown annually than rice or wheat. In Australia, maize takes up a lot of space geographically but is still a relatively small plant.

According to the new research, however,  maize has the potential to become the crop of the future for both fuel and food. 

“We developed a transgenic maize designed to produce more Rubisco, the main enzyme involved in photosynthesis, and the result is a plant with improved photosynthesis and hence, growth. This could potentially increase tolerance to extreme growth conditions,” said study lead author Dr. Robert Sharwood.

“There is an urgent need to deliver new higher-yielding and highly adapted crop species, before crops are affected by the expected climate change conditions. These conditions will increase the threats against global food security, and the only way to prepare for them is through international research collaborations.”

All plants use photosynthesis to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but this is not always done in the same way. Plants like wheat and rice use the less efficient C3 photosynthetic path, while other plants such as maize use the more efficient C4 path.


Rubisco is the main enzyme of photosynthesis which controls the conversion of CO2 into organic compounds. In C4 plants, Rubisco works much faster and is much more resilient. 

“Maize has one of the most efficient Rubiscos and they need less nitrogen to work,” said study co-author David Stern. “So, our main question was, if we increase Rubisco content in maize, what would it do for the plant? We found that by boosting Rubisco inside the maize cells, we get an increase in crop productivity.”

This discovery shows that, even in the more productive C4 crop species, there is room for improvement.

“In our study we improved CO2 assimilation and crop biomass by 15%, but now we know that we can also increase the pool of active Rubisco and these numbers will increase even higher,” said Dr. Sharwood.

“Our next step is to do field trials to see how our maize behaves in real field conditions. We have tested them in glasshouse and cabinet conditions, but now we need to go into the next phase.”

New discovery could increase the productivity, resilience of corn

Turns out, we may all be aliens. Scientists recreating interstellar ice grains say that their research offers compelling new evidence of the outer space origins for all <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/ancient-life-mars-underground/">life</a> on Earth.

The key, they say, is phosphine, which cosmic radiation can convert into phosphorus oxoacids like phosphoric diphosphoric acid that are vital to the formation of life.

“On Earth, phosphine is lethal to living beings,” Dr. Andrew Turner, the paper's lead author, told the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/">Daily Mail</a>. “But in the interstellar medium, an exotic phosphine chemistry can promote rare chemical reaction pathways to initiate the formation of biorelevant molecules such as oxoacids of phosphorus, which eventually might spark the molecular evolution of life as we know it.”

Turner, now a professor at the <a href="https://www.upike.edu/">University of Pikeville</a>, was a graduate student at the <a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/">University of Hawaii at Manoa</a> when he and a group of colleagues recreated “ice grainy” to study the space origins of life on our planet. Working with colleagues in France and Taiwan, the team used a high-vacuum chamber cooled to about negative-450 degrees Fahrenheit to recreate the conditions of space. Then they created the grains coated in carbon dioxide and frozen water known to exist in outer space.

They found that the conditions could convert lethal phosphine to compounds that make up the building blocks of DNA. The icy grains themselves may have originated in comets like 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which is suspected to contain phosphorus, co-author Ralf Kaiser of UH-Manoa said.

“Upon delivery to Earth by meteorites or comets, these phosphorus oxoacids might have been available for Earth's prebiotic phosphorus chemistry,” the team wrote.

Understanding how the exposure of phosphine to the conditions of space, as well as how the phosphorus-containing icy grains made it to Earth, could help us understand not just our own space origins, but also whether other planets elsewhere in the universe could harbor the building blocks of life.

According to the <a href="https://www.healthyagingpoll.org/">National Poll on Healthy Aging</a>, more than half of people in their 50s and 60s are interested in having their <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dna-test-illegal-ivory-poachers/">DNA</a> tested to find out more about their ancestry, understand various health risks, and to improve medical care.

On the other hand, two thirds of those polled said that DNA testing would probably cause them to worry too much about their future health.

The poll, which included 993 adults between the ages of 50 and 64, was conducted by the University of Michigan <a href="http://ihpi.umich.edu/healthcare-policy-innovation">Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation</a>.

Survey respondents were asked if they would be interested in taking tests to learn their genetic risk for three later-life disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, or macular degeneration. Around two-thirds of the respondents had at least some interest in each test.


The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently approved several disease-specific tests to be marketed directly to the public. Only one in 10 respondents  reported taking genetic tests offered directly to consumers, while one in 20 had taken genetic tests ordered by a doctor.


Dr. Scott Roberts worked on both the design and the analysis of the survey. He has studied the use of direct-to-consumer genetic testing and found that people who take these tests with the primary goal of learning about their ancestral heritage often end up being “blindsided” by findings that show they have a high risk of developing diseases such as Alzheimer's.

“Compared to previous findings in the general adult population, this age group appears to be a little more lukewarm about their views of the benefits versus the risks of genetic testing overall,” said Dr. Roberts. “The majority said they might be interested in knowing their risk for specific conditions, but on other hand they were worried about potential psychological distress from the results.”

According to Dr. Roberts, the accuracy of any genetic test is not 100 percent. He also pointed out that testing ordered by a physician often includes a genetic counselor who can help to prepare patients for handling the results and can help them understand what the test results actually mean. 

Dr. Preeti Malani is the director of the poll and a professor of Internal Medicine at the U-M Medical School who has special training in geriatric medicine.

“Patients may not think about the downstream effects of direct-to-consumer genetic testing. An unexpected positive result may lead to several additional tests that may or may not be covered by insurance,” explained Dr. Malani.

More than 70 percent of the participants who had taken a direct-to-consumer test said they were interested in learning more about their ancestry, while just under 10 percent said they got tested to find out more about their health in general or their risk of a particular disease.

“We're living in an era when advances like DNA testing are providing an amazing amount of useful health information,” said Dr. Alison Bryant, senior vice president of research for <a href="https://www.aarp.org/">AARP</a>. “As genetic testing becomes even more sophisticated and common among older adults, the challenge will be to ensure that people understand the benefits and limitations of these tests.”

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>

Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.
