<p>A small, cool star 40 light-years away has a planet that just might hold on to an atmosphere. Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to watch that world, TRAPPIST-1e, pass in front of its star four times and extract the planet’s faint atmospheric fingerprint.</p>



<p>A new paper reports those observations and what they can - and cannot - show about the gases above this rocky surface. </p>



<p>The team can already reject a thick, hydrogen-dominated atmosphere, but the data are not yet strong enough to prove what is there on the planet instead.</p>



<p>Néstor Espinoza from the <a href="https://www.stsci.edu/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Space Telescope Science Institute</a> (STScI) led the analysis with the JWST Telescope Scientist Team.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-star-activity-masks-trappist-1e">Star activity masks TRAPPIST-1e</h2>



<p>TRAPPIST-1 is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planets-orbiting-red-dwarf-stars-may-not-be-habitable-ultraviolet-uv-radiation/">red dwarf star</a>, a compact and relatively cool star type that often flares and develops spots in ways that upset precise measurements. </p>



<p>That activity complicates the search for air around its planets because changes from the star can masquerade as signs from a planet’s atmosphere.</p>



<p>TRAPPIST-1e sits in the star’s habitable zone - the region where a planet could support liquid water on its surface if pressure and temperature are suitable. </p>



<p>That alone does not make it hospitable, since the star’s outbursts could strip or scramble any atmosphere over time.</p>



<p>Earlier Webb data on the inner siblings, such as TRAPPIST-1b, found little evidence of a substantial atmosphere. </p>



<p>That result keeps expectations in check and places more weight on careful, repeated measurements for the middle worlds.</p>



<p>NASA shared a technical feature explaining that the first four TRAPPIST-1e observations are not enough to confirm an atmosphere. </p>



<p>The figure shows that models with and without an atmosphere still overlap in the range allowed by today’s data.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-telescope-actually-measured">What the telescope actually measured</h2>



<p>TRAPPIST-1e is an exoplanet, a planet beyond our solar system. When it crosses the star, a tiny bit of starlight filters through any air at the planet’s edge, and that light carries molecular fingerprints.</p>



<p>This method is called transmission spectroscopy, and it spreads the light into wavelengths to see where particular gases absorb. </p>



<p>Webb’s NIRSpec instrument recorded four such transits in 2023, covering wavelengths where gases like water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide could show up clearly.</p>



<p>Because the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/interstellar-tunnel-cosmic-channel-discovered-connects-our-solar-system-to-other-stars/">star</a> itself has features that can change over minutes to hours, the team built models to separate stellar effects from any possible planetary signals. </p>



<p>They also combined the four events to reduce random noise while being careful not to blur out real, repeatable features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-no-primary-atmosphere-detected">No primary atmosphere detected</h2>



<p>A hydrogen-rich atmosphere on the planet would have produced large, easily seen features in the spectrum. </p>



<p>The team reports that such primary atmospheres - dominated by hydrogen at levels above roughly 80 percent by volume - are inconsistent with the data.</p>



<p>Ana Glidden is a postdoctoral researcher in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences and the MIT <a href="https://www.space.mit.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.</a></p>



<p>“The idea is: If we assume that the planet is not airless, can we constrain different atmospheric scenarios? Do those scenarios still allow for liquid water at the surface?” she said. </p>



<p>Glidden noted that the results rule out a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere and tighten limits on several secondary-atmosphere scenarios.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A warm, nitrogen-rich mix remains possible, along with other secondary atmospheres that could arise from volcanic outgassing. </p>



<p>Those would appear much subtler in the data than hydrogen and require more than four transits to emerge from the noise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stellar-flares-complicate-tests">Stellar flares complicate tests</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trappist-1-has-seven-earth-like-planets-that-may-support-life/">TRAPPIST-1</a>’s surface has star spots and frequent flares that change its spectrum over time. </p>



<p>That “stellar contamination” can either add or remove features in the planetary spectrum and, if not modeled correctly, can be misleading.</p>



<p>To tackle that, the authors used Gaussian processes, a flexible statistical tool that learns the typical shape and size of the star’s variations and then subtracts them. </p>



<p>That approach does not assume a perfect star model, which is wise when the star is as active as this one.</p>



<p>The goal is to treat any wiggles that change from one visit to the next as coming from the star, and any persistent pattern as likely belonging to the planet. Webb’s stability helps here, but the source star’s behavior still sets the pace.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trappist-1e-air-circulation">TRAPPIST-1e air circulation</h2>



<p>A nitrogen-rich atmosphere would resemble Earth in broad strokes, though details such as oxygen, water vapor, and methane would matter greatly. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nitrogen-was-plentiful-for-early-life-on-earth/">Nitrogen</a> alone does not prove anything about life on the planet, but it suggests a heavier, secondary atmosphere capable of maintaining surface pressure.</p>



<p>“We are seeing two possible explanations," said Ryan MacDonald, Lecturer in Extrasolar Planets in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the <a href="https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of St Andrews</a>.</p>



<p>"The most exciting possibility is that TRAPPIST-1e could have a so-called secondary atmosphere containing heavy gases like nitrogen. But our initial observations cannot yet rule out a bare rock with no atmosphere.” </p>



<p>Independent of biology, an atmosphere changes surface temperature and how heat moves from day to night. On a tidally locked world, that could be the difference between an ice cap and a stable ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-webb-and-trappist-1e">Webb and TRAPPIST-1e</h2>



<p>The team plans many more transits to shrink error bars and test for specific gases. More visits let the statistics work, and they also average over the star’s mood swings.</p>



<p>“In the coming years we will go from four JWST observations of TRAPPIST-1e to nearly twenty," said MacDonald. </p>



<p>"We finally have the telescope and tools to search for habitable conditions in other star systems, which makes today one of the most exciting times for astronomy.”</p>



<p>As the dataset grows, scientists can check for methane and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-dioxide-hydrogen-peroxide-discovered-on-plutos-moon-charon/">carbon dioxide</a> together and run climate models that test whether liquid water could persist at the surface. </p>



<p>Caution remains the watchword until a clear atmospheric pattern repeats across many passes.</p>



<p>The study is published in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/adf42e" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>The Astrophysical Journal Letters</em></a>.</p>

Nearby rocky planet may hold an atmosphere fit for life

<p>New research from Australia, using satellite imagery to track emperor penguin colonies in East Antarctica, reveals that these iconic birds are struggling to cope with the rapid changes in their environment.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study, led by the Australian Antarctic Division, highlights that emperor penguins, which have adapted to environmental shifts for nearly a million years, are now facing unprecedented challenges due to the rapid loss of their breeding habitat.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fast-ice-for-penguin-breeding">Fast-ice for penguin breeding</h2>



<p>Barbara Wienecke, a seabird researcher at the <a href="https://www.antarctica.gov.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian Antarctic Division</a>, explained that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emperor-penguins-will-not-survive-the-current-rate-of-sea-ice-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emperor penguins</a> have historically responded to changes in their preferred breeding grounds, the Antarctic fast-ice zone, by relocating when conditions became unsuitable. </p>



<p>However, in 2022 and 2023, the untimely loss of fast-ice habitat, combined with record low sea-ice extent, led to significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emperor-penguins-face-tragic-breeding-failures-due-to-sea-ice-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">breeding failures</a> in some colonies. </p>



<p>Scientists fear these recent events could indicate worsening ice conditions, leaving the penguins with little time or capacity to adapt.</p>



<p>“Emperor penguins need stable fast-ice for about 10 months a year to breed successfully and rear their chicks,” Wienecke said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If their breeding platform disintegrates before early December, when the chicks still have their downy plumage, it's likely they will all perish. If it disintegrates before the end of December, chicks without waterproof plumage will die.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limited-capacity-to-adapt-to-rapid-changes">Limited capacity to adapt to rapid changes</h2>



<p>As long-lived seabirds, emperor penguins can handle occasional disruptions to their environment, but Wienecke warned that they have limited ability to adjust to the accelerating pace of environmental changes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The penguins cannot shorten the time it takes for their chicks to develop, making it difficult for them to adapt to a shorter fast-ice season.</p>



<p>Wienecke and her team - including sea-ice scientist Jan Lieser and seabird experts Julie McInnes and Jonathon Barrington - used satellite imagery from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Space Agency</a>’s Sentinel-2 program to examine shifts in breeding habitats and ice conditions from 2018 to 2023.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-monitoring-penguins-with-satellite-imagery">Monitoring penguins with satellite imagery</h2>



<p>Satellite imagery has proven invaluable for monitoring the variability in fast-ice habitat, according to Lieser. “From this, we can assess the adaptability of emperor penguins to rapid change, and the impacts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-species-are-shifting-their-habitats-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat change</a> on breeding success,” he said. </p>



<p>The research team studied satellite images covering 6,000 kilometers of East Antarctica’s coastline between September and December, the crucial time for chick rearing and fledging.</p>



<p>They manually tracked the locations of penguin colonies each year and measured the distance between the colonies and the fast-ice edge.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This distance is critical, as adult penguins need to be close to the edge to access open water for feeding, but if the colony is too close, the ice may break up before the chicks are ready to survive at sea.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-breeding-failures-due-to-habitat-loss">Rising breeding failures due to habitat loss</h2>



<p>The study found that 13 of the 27 colonies examined are at risk of reduced or complete breeding failure due to habitat loss. Nine of these colonies experienced such failures at least once during the six-year study period.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One colony disappeared entirely, although some individuals may have joined other nearby colonies.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While some penguin colonies moved to new types of habitats, such as ice shelves or ice tongues, these areas are also vulnerable to iceberg calving events that can alter local conditions.</p>



<p>Previous population modeling studies have projected that up to 65% of emperor penguin colonies could become “quasi-extinct” (on the path to extinction) by 2050.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, Wienecke noted that the variability in colony locations relative to sea ice makes it difficult to model these trends accurately.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-importance-of-ongoing-monitoring">Importance of ongoing monitoring</h2>



<p>The new study highlights the importance of medium and high-resolution satellite imagery as a tool for annual monitoring of emperor penguin colonies and their fast-ice habitats across Antarctica.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to Weinecke, ongoing, continent-wide monitoring is essential to quantify the effects of changing ice conditions on penguin populations and assess the cumulative impacts of other threats, such as disease.</p>



<p>“Satellite imagery enables us to identify the locations of emperor penguin colonies each year and assess the local environmental conditions,” explained Weinecke.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This combination of satellite data with ground and aerial counts of penguins where possible will provide a clearer picture of how local populations are affected by these environmental changes.</p>



<p>In conclusion, the study, published in the journal <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.3354/esr01355" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Endangered Species Research</em></a>, stresses the need for continued monitoring and research to better understand the consequences of rapid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-ice-loss-may-have-reached-an-irreversible-tipping-point/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice loss</a> on emperor penguins and their breeding success. </p>



<p>Without stable fast-ice, these iconic seabirds face an uncertain future as they struggle to adapt to the rapidly changing conditions in Antarctica.</p>

<p>In 2023, NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission successfully returned a sample of dust and rocks from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While this sample provides critical insights into the universe, the data collected by the mission may also offer a chance to explore <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-fifth-force-of-nature-subatomic-particles-are-defying-the-laws-of-physics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">new areas</a> of physics. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-fifth-force-of-the-universe-nbsp">Potential fifth force of the universe&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A research team led by Yu-Dai Tsai, an astrophysicist at the <a href="https://www.lanl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Alamos National Laboratory</a> (LANL), utilized Bennu's tracking data to investigate the potential existence of a fifth fundamental force in the universe.</p>



<p>“Interpreting the data we see from tracking Bennu has the potential to add to our understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the universe, potentially revamping our understanding of the Standard Model of physics, gravity and dark matter,” explained Tsai.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“The trajectories of objects often feature anomalies that can be useful in discovering new physics.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-near-earth-asteroids-like-bennu">Tracking near-Earth asteroids like Bennu</h2>



<p>Given the potential implications for planetary defense, near-Earth asteroids like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-bennu-holds-secrets-of-the-solar-systems-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bennu</a> are closely monitored.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team leveraged ground-based tracking data gathered both before and during the OSIRIS-REx mission to investigate extensions of the Standard Model of physics, which currently explains three of the four known fundamental forces of the universe.</p>



<p>Since Bennu's discovery in 1999, optical and radar astrometric data have helped refine its trajectory with precision. The OSIRIS-REx mission added to this with X-band radiometric and optical navigation tracking data.</p>



<p>“The tight constraints we've achieved translate readily to some of the tightest-ever limits on Yukawa-type fifth forces,” said study co-author Sunny Vagnozzi, an assistant professor at the University of Trento. </p>



<p>“These results highlight the potential for asteroid tracking as a valuable tool in the search for ultralight bosons, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/existence-of-dark-matter-confirmed-by-new-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark matter</a> and several well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-possibility-of-a-fifth-fundamental-force-nbsp">Possibility of a fifth fundamental force&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The trajectory of a celestial body, like an asteroid, is shaped by gravity and other forces. Understanding these trajectories can uncover mysteries, especially when anomalies appear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Historically, for example, the existence of Neptune was inferred from irregularities in Uranus's orbit before Neptune was ever directly observed.</p>



<p>By analyzing Bennu's trajectory and developing corresponding models, the team established constraints on the possibility of a fifth fundamental force and the role of a potential mediating particle, such as an ultralight boson, in that force. </p>



<p>A mediating particle acting upon a fifth force could alter the orbit of an asteroid like Bennu, which is why analyzing this tracking data is significant for physics research.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-matter-and-dark-energy-nbsp">Dark matter and dark energy&nbsp;</h2>



<p>A new particle, such as an ultralight boson, could extend the Standard Model to include dark matter and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-energy-could-explain-the-rapid-expansion-of-the-early-universe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a> - two phenomena strongly suggested by cosmological and astrophysical observations but not yet integrated into the current theoretical framework.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While dark matter is believed to make up approximately 85% of the universe's total matter, scientists still lack a concrete understanding of the particles and forces that constitute it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-asteroid-tracking-and-fifth-force-physics-nbsp">Asteroid tracking and fifth-force physics&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Tsai and his team first explored the idea of using asteroid tracking to investigate fifth-force physics in a 2023 paper published in the <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1475-7516/2023/04/031" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics</em></a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>After their work on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/osiris-rex-safely-delivers-rock-samples-from-asteroid-bennu-back-to-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bennu</a>, they now plan to continue this research with the asteroid Apophis, which will pass within 20,000 miles of Earth in 2029.</p>



<p>NASA's OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft is scheduled to approach Apophis during this close flyby and stir up dust.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Observations of how Earth's gravity affects Apophis as it passes by will provide more data to aid in the search for evidence of fifth-force physics.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-probing-fundamental-questions-in-physics-nbsp">Probing fundamental questions in physics&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Looking ahead, the research team is also exploring the use of space quantum technologies and dedicated space missions to improve tracking accuracy or directly search for dark matter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These innovations could significantly enhance measurement precision and further support efforts to investigate subtle gravitational influences that may reveal the presence of new particles or forces.</p>



<p>Such advancements could pave the way for future breakthroughs as scientists continue to explore the fundamental forces that govern the universe.</p>



<p>This research represents an important step in using asteroid tracking data to probe fundamental questions in physics, offering a new method for investigating the universe’s hidden forces and particles.</p>

Is there a fifth force of nature? Asteroids provide new clues

<p>Researchers have long known that a common family of environmental <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hungry-bacteria-will-devour-plastic-waste/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria</a> called <em>Comamonadaceae</em> thrive in urban rivers and wastewater systems where plastic litter is abundant. </p>



<p>However, what exactly these bacteria are doing with the plastic has remained unclear until now.</p>



<p>A recent study led by <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> has uncovered how cells of a <em>Comamonas</em> bacteria break down plastic to use as food. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bacteria-and-the-issue-of-plastic-waste">Bacteria and the issue of plastic waste</h2>



<p>The researchers found that the bacteria first chew the plastic into small pieces, called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-solution-removes-over-98-percent-of-nanoplastics-from-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nanoplastics</a>. Then, they secrete a specialized enzyme that further breaks down the plastic. Finally, the bacteria feed on the carbon atoms from the plastic, using it as a food source.</p>



<p>This discovery opens up exciting new possibilities for creating bacteria-based solutions to tackle the growing problem of plastic waste, which contaminates <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strict-pfas-limits-will-make-drinking-water-safer-for-100-million-americans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drinking water</a> and poses serious threats to wildlife.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wastewater-bacteria-break-down-plastic-nbsp">Wastewater bacteria break down plastic&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Study lead author Ludmilla Aristilde is an associate professor of environmental engineering at Northwestern.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We have systematically shown, for the first time, that a wastewater bacterium can take a starting plastic material, deteriorate it, fragment it, break it down, and use it as a source of carbon,” said Aristilde.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is amazing that this bacterium can perform that entire process, and we identified a key enzyme responsible for breaking down the plastic materials. This could be optimized and exploited to help get rid of plastics in the environment.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expanding-on-earlier-research-nbsp">Expanding on earlier research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Aristilde, an expert in organic dynamics in environmental processes, led the study along with her team, including co-first authors Rebecca Wilkes and Nanqing Zhou. Several graduate and undergraduate researchers from Aristilde’s lab also contributed to the work.</p>



<p>This new research builds upon earlier work by Aristilde’s group, which explored how <em>Comamonas testosteroni</em> metabolizes simple carbons from broken-down plants and plastics.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bacteria-and-pet-plastic">Bacteria and PET plastic</h2>



<p>In this study, the team focused again on <em>C. testosteroni</em>, which is known to grow on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - a type of plastic commonly found in food packaging and beverage bottles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>PET is notorious for being difficult to break down and is a major contributor to plastic pollution worldwide.</p>



<p>“It’s important to note that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-can-break-down-pet-pollution-in-ocean-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PET plastics</a> represent 12% of total global plastics usage,” Aristilde said. “And it accounts for up to 50% of microplastics in wastewaters.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-watching-bacteria-degrade-plastic">Watching bacteria degrade plastic</h2>



<p>To better understand how <em>C. testosteroni</em> interacts with and feeds on plastic, Aristilde’s team used a range of experimental and theoretical approaches.&nbsp;</p>



<p>First, they grew the bacteria - isolated from wastewater - on PET films and pellets. Using advanced microscopy, they observed how the plastic surfaces changed over time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team also examined the surrounding water to detect plastic broken down into smaller nanoparticles.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Finally, the researchers investigated the bacteria to identify the tools they use to degrade the plastic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transforming-plastic-into-a-carbon-source-nbsp">Transforming plastic into a carbon source&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“In the presence of the bacterium, the microplastics were broken down into tiny nanoparticles of plastics,” Aristilde explained.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We found that the wastewater bacterium has an innate ability to degrade plastic all the way down to monomers - small building blocks that join together to form polymers. These small units are a bioavailable source of carbon that bacteria can use for growth.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-deeper-understanding-of-the-process-nbsp">A deeper understanding of the process&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Once the team confirmed that <em>C. testosteroni</em> could indeed break down plastics, they delved deeper into understanding how this process occurs.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Using omics techniques to measure all enzymes inside the bacterial cells, they identified a specific enzyme that was expressed when the bacteria were exposed to PET plastic.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Collaborators at <a href="https://www.ornl.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oak Ridge National Laboratory</a> in Tennessee then prepared bacterial cells that lacked the ability to express this enzyme. Remarkably, the bacteria without this enzyme lost or significantly diminished their ability to degrade plastic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-of-the-study">Broader implications of the study</h2>



<p>While this discovery could potentially lead to new environmental cleanup technologies, Aristilde also emphasized that the research provides valuable insights into how plastics change during wastewater treatment.</p>



<p>Aristilde noted that wastewater is a huge reservoir of microplastics and nanoplastics.</p>



<p>“Most people think nanoplastics enter wastewater treatment plants as nanoplastics. But we’re showing that nanoplastics can be formed during wastewater treatment through microbial activity,” Aristilde said.</p>



<p>“That’s something we need to pay attention to as our society tries to understand the behavior of plastics throughout its journey from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-wastewater-is-a-hidden-solution-to-the-climate-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wastewater</a> to receiving rivers and lakes.”</p>



<p>The team’s findings highlight the importance of paying closer attention to how plastics behave and transform in environmental systems, with the potential for new strategies to mitigate plastic pollution on the horizon.</p>

<p>Have you ever wondered how your cells communicate with each other? How do they pass on vital data? They do this through RNA, the molecular courier of cell communication.</p>



<p>A team of researchers led by Hadi Valadi at the University of Gothenburg has peeled back the curtain on this fascinating subject. The experts revealed the role of RNA, not as life's blueprint, but as the messenger that carries instructions from one cell to the next.</p>

<p>Studies reveal that other life domains, such as archaea, bacteria, eukaryotic cells, and plants, all gab away through their vesicle-bound RNA. It's truly a universal conversation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-communicate-through-rna">Cells communicate through RNA</h2>



<p>“I’ve been in awe of what RNA can do,” said&nbsp;Amy Buck, an RNA biologist at the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Edinburgh</a> who was not involved with the new research. For her, understanding RNA as a means of communication “goes beyond appreciating the sophistication and the dynamic nature of RNA within the cell.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to microbiologist Susanne Erdmann, RNA can morph into different forms, acting as an enzyme, latching onto DNA, and even interfering with mRNA instructions.</p>



<p>“How many other different organisms in the same environment could take up this message?” she asked. “And do they just eat it and use the RNA as food, or do they actually detect the signal?”</p>

<p>The world finds itself in the clutches of a silent, but potent, enemy -- climate change. In a sobering revelation, international voices in emergency medicine have raised the red flag regarding the potentially devastating effects of climate change on our global emergency health services.</p>



<p>The key concern, however, is that many nations are sailing blind, with scant assessments of the imminent impact or adequate strategies in place to combat this brewing storm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urgent-findings">Urgent findings</h2>



<p>At the European Emergency Medicine Congress (<a href="https://eusemcongress.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EUSEM Congress</a>), Luis Garcia Castrillo, a now-retired professor in emergency medicine from the Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain, revealed alarming findings from a global survey on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-earth-energy-imbalance-temperature-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change awareness</a> and preparedness.</p>



<p>This research, to be published in the <em>European Journal of Emergency Medicine</em>, was a collaborative effort carried out by the EUSEM’s Emergency Medicine Day working group.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-vs-emergency-care">Climate change vs. emergency care</h2>



<p>“On a scale of 0 to 9, they rated the severity of the impact of climate change on health systems and specifically on emergency care, both now and in the future, at an average of 7,” Luis Garcia Castrillo said. </p>



<p>“This is a high figure, especially as some regions, such as northern Europe, consider it to be less of a problem than do other countries, such as Australia. The focus groups considered that the impact of climate change on emergency medical services would be similar or even higher than on global health systems," Castrillo continued.</p>



<p>However, only 21% of the focus group members reported that assessments of the effect of climate change on emergency medical services had been carried out, and only 38% reported any measures had been taken to prepare for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-climate-change-is-impacting-infant-growth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">impact of climate change</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-negligent-governance">Negligent governance</h2>



<p>“Out of all the focus group respondents, 62% said their governments or policy makers had made no assessment of the impact of climate change on emergency services, 9% said they didn’t know, 55% said nothing had been done to prepare for the impact of climate change, and 10% didn’t know," noted Luis Garcia Castrillo.</p>



<p>This lack of awareness prevails not only among countries but also within emergency medicine societies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-s-impact-on-emergency-medicine">Climate change's impact on emergency medicine</h2>



<p>“One interesting finding is that the need to implement actions to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-fear-climate-change-will-end-the-world-during-their-lifetime/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mitigate climate change</a> is considered important everywhere," said Dr. Roberta Petrino, the director of the Emergency Department at <a href="https://www.eoc.ch" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ente Ospedaliero Cantonale</a>, Lugano, Switzerland and co-author of the report.</p>



<p>In particular, their survey showed the need to strengthen emergency medicine services and education programs for medical students and emergency medicine doctors, as well as research.</p>



<p>Emergency medical professionals are very worried about the effects of climate change on the care they provide.</p>



<p>"Our report shows that colleagues feel it’s an important problem around the world, although specific issues vary from one region to another and these relate to geographical position, the economic situation and the types of risks," Dr. Petrino explained.</p>



<p>Specific concerns, however, vary geographically and economically.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varying-global-perceptions">Varying global perceptions</h2>



<p>Across all focus groups, pollution, flooding, and heatwaves were identified as the top risks. Amidst these adversities, an increase in the demand for emergency medical services is expected. </p>



<p>Strategic planning and education were ranked as crucial measures to alleviate these problems.</p>



<p>Focus groups from wealthier countries expressed concern about heatwaves, cold spells, and wildfires. </p>



<p>Meanwhile, those from lower to middle-income countries are more troubled by the impact of climate change on food production and health services disruption.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-terrifying-predictions">Terrifying predictions</h2>



<p>An analysis of the data highlighted Australasia, Eastern Europe, South Asia, South Saharan Africa, and Central America as areas expecting the highest impact from climate change.</p>



<p><a href="https://data.humdata.org/dataset/worldriskindex?" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The WorldRiskIndex</a>, which assesses risk of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-makes-metals-in-the-ocean-more-toxic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme natural events</a> and climate change, revealed an increase demand for emergency medical services and supply disruption proportional to increasing risk.</p>



<p>As record-breaking temperatures continue to dominate headlines, the world faces a climate change emergency. Equally, our medical services are at risk. </p>



<p>The European Society of Emergency Medicine (<a href="https://eusem.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EUSEM</a>) urges nations to implement mitigation plans to combat the impact of climate change on our services.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridging-the-knowledge-gap">Bridging the knowledge gap</h2>



<p>Addressing the challenges posed by climate change to emergency services demands bridging the knowledge gap between scientific understanding and practical applications. </p>



<p>Training programs for emergency personnel need to incorporate climate impact assessments, equipping them with the skills necessary to respond efficiently to climate-induced emergencies. </p>



<p>This approach not only increases resilience within communities but also ensures a systematic response, minimizing potential disruptions to emergency services.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-safeguarding-emergency-services-from-climate">Safeguarding emergency services from climate</h2>



<p>In light of the critical findings presented by the European Emergency Medicine Congress and the WorldRiskIndex, a comprehensive and collaborative global strategy is imperative. </p>



<p>Policymakers, health organizations, and emergency service providers must unite to develop actionable plans.</p>



<p>These plans should focus on bolstering infrastructure, enhancing risk communication, and promoting adaptive capacities in both urban and rural settings. </p>



<p>By doing so, the global community can mitigate the impending risks of climate change and safeguard emergency medical services for future generations.</p>



<p>Climate change poses a daunting challenge to emergency medical services across the globe. With it comes an urgent call to action for more comprehensive assessments, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperature-increase-2023-blew-past-all-climate-models/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">strategic planning</a>, and extensive education. </p>



<p>This journey must be navigated together, as climate change remains a shared global responsibility.</p>

<p>The European Space Agency's (ESA) Mars Express has given us a wondrous view of a Martian winter wonderland, showcasing an array of breathtaking ice landforms rearing their heads from the frost.</p>



<p>Where was the camera aimed? The south polar region of Mars, where spring has started to stir, unveiling some truly remarkable features.</p>



<p>Darker than the icy realms surrounding them, these wonders have earned the <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Mars_periglacial-terrain_Australe-Scopuli-region_ice_gases_Mars-Express_ESA_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">title of 'cryptic terrain'</a>. However, let's not rush into the heart of the matter just yet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-ice-like-no-other">Mars ice like no other</h2>



<p>How many of us know that the seasonal polar caps of Mars are composed mainly of carbon dioxide ice with a touch of water ice? </p>



<p>With the arrival of spring, the ice sublimates at quite a pace -- turning directly from a solid state to vapor, freeing a considerable amount of gas into <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-mars-became-uninhabitable-after-being-life-supporting-ocean-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars' thin atmosphere</a>.</p>



<p>The process reverses during autumn, the vapor condenses, and the caps grow, sometimes reaching roughly the equivalent of Scotland and Denmark's southern reaches if replicated on the northern hemisphere of Earth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-freeze-thaw-chronicles">Freeze-thaw chronicles</h2>



<p>This is where our journey truly begins -- with these curious landforms born out of the freeze-thaw cycle.</p>



<p>One such region is the Australe Scopuli, captured in all its glory by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (<a href="https://sci.esa.int/documents/33745/35957/1567253672047-NeukemWeb.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HRSC</a>) onboard <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Mars_Express" rel="nofollow">Mars Express</a> during southern hemisphere spring.</p>



<p>From layered deposits of ice frozen with varying amounts of trapped dust to the smooth surface of these polar layered deposits, the Australe Scopuli is a sight for sore eyes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dark-center-stage-vs-mars-ice">Dark center stage vs Mars ice</h2>



<p>Looming in the center of the scene is the cryptic terrain, darker than the rest of the ice cap. </p>



<p>While the reason these features were darker was once unclear, researchers now believe they have a better understanding of the processes occurring in this dynamic region.</p>

<p>Take a closer look, and you'll see that the dark center stage is covered with a pattern of polygon shapes at various scales.</p>



<p>Likewise, the polygon edges seem to trap bright frost -- a pattern common in the Arctic and Antarctic regions on Earth.</p>



<p>Typically, patterns of this nature indicate the presence of water ice in the ground. Studying these patterns on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-plan-terraform-mars-nanoparticles-would-make-it-habitable-for-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars</a> gives researchers a unique perspective into the planet's climate history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-jets-fans-on-mars">Ice, jets, fans on Mars</h2>



<p>Across the image, you'll see bright and dark fan-shaped deposits, oriented in the direction of prevailing winds. These fans form through a fascinating process. </p>



<p>When sunlight permeates through the translucent carbon dioxide ice layer in early spring, warming the underlying surface, pockets of trapped gas build pressure, causing the overlying ice to crack. </p>



<p>Jets of gas burst through the surface, carrying dark dust from below. As the dust falls back to the surface, the direction of the prevailing wind patterns it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mars-express-on-ice-landscapes">Mars express on ice landscapes</h2>



<p>The Mars Express has been instrumental in our understanding of the Red Planet since its arrival in 2003. </p>



<p>From mapping the planet's minerals to probing beneath its crust, studying its atmosphere, and examining its geological features, the satellite has provided us with an understanding of our neighboring planet far beyond what we previously knew.</p>

<p>Information shapes our perceptions and decisions, but what happens when we don’t have the whole story? </p>



<p>Most of us have experienced that moment in a debate when we are utterly convinced we’re right, only to later discover that we were missing key details.</p>



<p>This phenomenon, termed the "illusion of information adequacy," reveals our tendency to assume we have enough data to make informed decisions, even when critical details are missing.</p>



<p>Recent research explores this intriguing concept, uncovering how we often believe our judgments are well-founded despite incomplete information.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-illusion-of-information-adequacy">The illusion of information adequacy</h2>



<p>The illusion of information adequacy refers to the natural assumption that we have all the necessary data to make informed decisions or to defend our stances. </p>



<p>"We found that, in general, people don’t stop to think whether there might be more information that would help them make a more informed decision," noted study co-author Angus Fletcher, a professor at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ohio State University</a>.</p>



<p>According to Professor Fletcher, when individuals encounter a few aligned pieces of information, they're quick to conclude, "that sounds about right," and proceed accordingly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research">Focus of the research </h2>



<p>In an attempt to better understand this intriguing human tendency, the team analyzed the behavior of 1,261 Americans. They were divided into three groups and were given an article about a fictional school that lacked adequate water.</p>



<p>The first group read an article supporting the idea of merging with another school, the second group's article advocated for staying separate, and the third control group read both arguments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-confident-decisions-without-the-facts">Confident decisions without the facts</h2>



<p>The fascinating results showed that the groups with one-sided information still felt confident in their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cells-communicate-to-support-decision-making/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decision-making</a>. They were inclined to follow the recommendations in the article they read. </p>



<p>"Those with only half the information were actually more confident in their decision to merge or remain separate than those who had the complete story," noted Professor Fletcher.</p>



<p>Interestingly, those who lacked complete information even assumed that most people would make the same decision they did.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-different-behavioral-patterns-revealed">Different behavioral patterns revealed</h2>



<p>Despite the concerning findings, Professor Fletcher shared an optimistic perspective. In the study, many of the participants who initially had one-sided information changed their minds upon encountering the other side's argument.</p>



<p>However, this may not apply universally, especially regarding deeply entrenched ideological issues. Often, people might mistrust new information or reframe it to align it with their pre-existing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/self-serving-bias-distorting-beliefs-about-others-feel-better/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beliefs</a>.</p>



<p>The study's findings shed light on another interesting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pandemic-restrictions-had-a-lasting-effect-on-behavior-patterns/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavioral pattern</a> - naive realism. This refers to the belief that one's subjective perception of a situation is the complete objective truth.</p>



<p>The illusion of information adequacy, however, shows that people may share the same understanding - if they both are adequately informed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fighting-the-illusion-of-information-adequacy">Fighting the illusion of information adequacy </h2>



<p>Fletcher, who also investigates the impact of narratives on people, advises everyone to ensure they have the full story before assuming a stance or making a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quick-decisions-are-often-biased-and-misleading/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decision</a>. </p>



<p>"Your first move when you disagree with someone should be to think, 'Is there something that I’m missing that would help me see their perspective and understand their position better?' That’s the way to fight this illusion of information adequacy," said Fletcher. </p>



<p>According to the researchers, their results provide broad support for the theory that individuals maintain the illusion that they have adequate information, and this illusion impacts several downstream outcomes related to decision-making.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-information-gaps-and-decision-making-pitfalls">Information gaps and decision-making pitfalls</h2>



<p>In decision-making, the illusion of having enough information can lead us into traps. The study demonstrates that when people receive incomplete or one-sided information, they not only feel confident but often more convinced of their stance than if they had access to the full picture.</p>



<p>This overconfidence stems from our tendency to fill in missing information with assumptions that reinforce our beliefs.</p>



<p>The research suggests that information gaps can contribute to a rigid mindset, where new insights are either dismissed or reshaped to fit an existing narrative. </p>



<p>By being aware of these information gaps, we can better navigate complex situations, question our assumptions, and ultimately make decisions that are more nuanced, informed, and reflective of the broader context.</p>

<p>Blood type plays a fascinating role in the world of human biology, influencing various aspects of our well-being. This particular characteristic has piqued the curiosity of scientists and doctors for years.</p>



<p>A recent study has uncovered a potential link between certain blood types and an increased risk of experiencing an early stroke.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-blood-types">Human blood types</h2>



<p>Before we dive into the finer details of this study, it's important to have a basic understanding. </p>



<p>The yardstick that we use to distinguish human blood types, known as the ABO blood group system, recognizes A, B, AB, and O as the main blood types. </p>



<p>These labels arise from particular chemical components present in our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blood-stem-cells-grown-in-the-lab-for-first-time-ever-leukemia-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">red blood cells</a>. However, beneath these general categories lie subtle variations, the result of gene mutations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blood-type-and-early-stroke">Blood type and early stroke</h2>



<p>A detailed research venture in 2022 explored the connection between the gene responsible for the A1 subgroup and the likelihood of having an early <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/millions-of-americans-are-at-risk-of-a-stroke-from-intense-exercise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke</a>. </p>



<p>The researchers scrutinized data from 48 genetic studies, including 17,000 stroke patients and approximately 600,000 non-stroke individuals, all between the ages 18 and 59.</p>



<p>The researchers conducted a genome-wide search and found two locations that were strongly associated with an earlier risk of stroke. Interestingly, one of these locations coincided with the site where the genes for blood type reside.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blood-type-a-and-stroke-risk">Blood type A and stroke risk</h2>



<p>When the researchers looked closer at specific blood type genes, they made an astonishing discovery. </p>



<p>Those people whose genome coded for a version of the A group had a 16 percent higher chance of suffering a stroke before age 60 compared to other blood types. </p>



<p>On the other hand, individuals with a gene for group O1 had a 12 percent lower stroke risk. These riveting findings were shared by senior author and vascular neurologist Steven Kittner from the <a href="https://umd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Maryland</a>.</p>



<p>However, the experts emphasized that the extra stroke risk for people with type A blood is relatively slight. As such, these individuals do not need to worry about more surveillance or check-ups.</p>



<p>Though it's still a bit of a mystery, the increased risk may be tied to components involved in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-sweetener-erythritol-sugar-substitute-linked-to-blood-clots-heart-disease/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blood clot</a> formation, including platelets, cells lining blood vessels, and various circulating proteins.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-and-late-stroke">Early and late stroke</h2>



<p>An intriguing part of the study cropped up when comparing those who had a stroke before 60 to those who had one after this age. </p>



<p>The increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-adults-with-migraines-have-a-greater-stroke-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stroke risk</a> accompanying type A blood dwindled quite significantly in the late-onset stroke group. It implies the triggers for early-life strokes may differ from those later in life.</p>



<p>It is worth noting that strokes in younger people are seldom caused by atherosclerosis, the accumulation of fatty patches in arteries. They are more often provoked by factors connected to clot formation.</p>



<p>Additionally, the study identified that people with type B blood had roughly an 11 percent increased likelihood of having a stroke, irrespective of their age.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blood-type-and-cardiovascular-health">Blood type and cardiovascular health</h2>



<p>Earlier research has shown that the part of the genome associated with blood type, known as the "ABO locus," is tied with coronary artery calcification, which can limit <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exercise-increases-blood-flow-to-the-brain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">blood flow</a> and up the risk of a heart attack.</p>



<p>Similarly, the A and B blood type genetic sequences have been linked to a slightly elevated risk of venous thrombosis, or blood clots in veins.</p>



<p>Despite needing more studies to shed light on these discoveries, it appears our blood type could harbor more health secrets than we previously suspected, particularly regarding our stroke risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetics-and-stroke-risk">Genetics and stroke risk</h2>



<p>While blood type offers an interesting peek into stroke risk, it's merely a part of the larger picture. Genetics wield a hefty influence on our susceptibility to various heart-related conditions, including stroke.</p>



<p> In the same study, it was noted that other genetic markers, apart from the ABO blood group, were associated with early onset stroke. </p>



<p>These markers affect elements like blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and inflammatory responses, all of which can alter stroke risk.</p>



<p>A deeper understanding of this broad genetic landscape aids scientists in identifying those who may be at higher risk. </p>

<p>The study offers new insights into rat social structures and their implications for human psychiatric medication development.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rats-as-a-model-for-social-behavior-nbsp">Rats as a model for social behavior&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rodents-are-reservoirs-for-dangerous-fungal-diseases/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rodents</a> serve as an important model for examining both individual and collective behavior,” explained the study authors. “Dominance within rodent social structures can determine access to critical resources, such as food and mating opportunities.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, the researchers noted, many aspects of the intricate interplay between individual behaviors and the resulting group social hierarchy - especially its evolution over time - remain unexplored.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complex-social-interactions-among-rats">Complex social interactions among rats</h2>



<p>Rats, often used in laboratory studies due to their genetic similarities with humans, are now shown to exhibit complex social interactions too.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nearly 90% of genes in humans and rats display significant similarities, making their behavior particularly relevant for medical and psychological studies.</p>

<p>In this study, the researchers color-coded the rats so that an automated system could monitor them continuously for eight months.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The system tracked them 24 hours a day, allowing the scientists to observe intricate patterns of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-determines-social-dominance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social dominance</a> and peaceful coexistence among the rat colonies. <p>The 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded on Monday, October 7 to two American scientists for their discovery of microRNA - a previously unknown type of genetic switch that could lead to significant medical breakthroughs.</p>



<p>Despite the development of several treatments and tests using microRNAs against cancer, heart disease, viruses, and other illnesses, none have yet reached patients.</p>



<p>Furthermore, when Nobel laureates Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun unveiled their discovery decades ago, it attracted little attention, as many thought it was just “something weird about worms,” as University of Cambridge geneticist Eric Miska put it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-messenger-rna-and-gene-regulation-nbsp">Messenger RNA and gene regulation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Every cell in the human body contains the same set of instructions called DNA. Some cells become brain cells, while others develop into muscles.</p>



<p>So, how do cells determine their specific roles? The relevant parts of the DNA instructions are highlighted through a process known as gene regulation.</p>



<p>Ribonucleic acid (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-rna-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RNA</a>) typically serves as a messenger, conveying instructions from DNA to proteins - the building blocks of life that transform cells into brains or muscles.</p>



<p>Miska provided the example of the messenger RNA <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19-vaccination-reduces-mortality-risk-but-only-for-6-months/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vaccines</a> deployed against COVID-19 during the pandemic, which introduce a message with new instructions to build proteins that block viruses.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-of-microrna-nbsp">Discovery of microRNA&nbsp;</h2>



<p>However, the two new Nobel winners, Ambros and Ruvkun, discovered an entirely new type of gene regulator that had previously been overlooked by science.</p>



<p>Rather than acting as messengers that relay information, microRNAs function as switches to turn other genes on or off.</p>



<p>“This was a whole new level of control that we had totally missed,” said Miska, who has worked on microRNA for two decades, including with the new Nobel laureates.</p>



<p>“The discovery of microRNAs brought an additional level of complexity by revealing that regions that were thought to be non-coding play a role in gene regulation,” added French researcher Benoit Ballester.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-critical-role-of-microrna-nbsp">The critical role of microRNA&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the 1980s, Ambros and Ruvkun were working separately on how genes interact in one-millimeter-long roundworms called <em>C. elegans</em>.</p>



<p>When they compared their research, it led to the discovery of microRNA. Ambros published the finding in a 1993 paper.</p>



<p>“Nobody really paid much attention,” Miska said, explaining that most scientists at the time thought it only applied to worms.</p>



<p>Then, in 2000, Ruvkun published research showing that microRNA is present throughout the animal kingdom, including in humans and even some viruses.</p>



<p>“This was not just something weird that worms do, but in fact all animals and plants are totally dependent for development and normal function on them,” Miska said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microrna-regulates-hundreds-of-genes-nbsp">MicroRNA regulates hundreds of genes&nbsp;</h2>



<p>It is now believed that more than a thousand genes that respond to microRNAs exist in the human body.</p>



<p>Many new treatments and tests using microRNA are undergoing trials, but none have been widely made available yet.</p>



<p>“Though there are no very clear applications available yet in microRNAs, understanding them, knowing that they exist, understanding their counter-regulatory networks, is always the first step,” said Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam, a scientist at <a href="https://ki.se/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institute</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hope-in-the-fight-against-cancer">Hope in the fight against cancer</h2>



<p>MicroRNAs are particularly promising for fighting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-is-the-next-frontier-in-cancer-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cancer</a> because some of these switches “act as a tumor suppressor, so they put a brake on cells dividing inappropriately,” Miska explained.</p>



<p>Others, meanwhile, induce “cells to divide, which can lead to cancer,” he added.</p>



<p>Since many viruses use microRNAs, several antiviral drugs are at various stages of development, including one for hepatitis C.</p>



<p>However, one complicating factor has been that microRNAs can be unstable.</p>



<p>Scientists also hope they can be used as a test called a “biomarker,” which could reveal, for example, what type of cancer a patient might have.</p>



<p>According to Miska, microRNAs could also be involved in the evolution of our species. “It seems very likely that microRNAs have important roles in why the human brain is different from the brains of other primates,” he said.</p>



<p>Although studying human brains is challenging, Miska hopes that future research will provide more insights into how microRNAs contribute to the complex structure and functions of both human bodies and brains.</p>

<p>An elephant never forgets, as the saying goes, and there is compelling new evidence that this may be true. </p>



<p>A recent study suggests that proboscideans - such as elephants - remember waterholes they visited decades ago and recognize other elephants they have not encountered in a long time.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-do-elephants-remember-humans">Do elephants remember humans?</h2>



<p>But can their exceptional memory extend beyond their own species? Do elephants remember humans, particularly their keepers, even after years apart?</p>



<p>As part of his bachelor thesis, study lead author Martin Kränzlin conducted a study investigating elephant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-does-our-brain-form-long-term-memories/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">memory</a> under the supervision of Christine Böhmer in the Zoological Institute at <a href="https://www.uni-kiel.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kiel University</a>. </p>



<p>“There are exciting stories of Asian elephants that suggest this,” said Kränzlin. “For example, it has been reported that elephants threw stones at a former owner they didn't like when they met again many years later.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“However, these are only anecdotal reports; this question has not yet been scientifically investigated.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-elephants-remember-the-scent-of-their-keepers">Elephants remember the scent of their keepers</h2>



<p>In a study published in the journal <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1002/zoo.21871" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Zoo Biology</em></a>, Kränzlin and his colleagues provide the first scientific evidence that elephants can, indeed, recognize the scent of their keepers even after a long period of time. </p>



<p>The research was conducted in cooperation with the Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, Lower Saxony, where two female elephants - Bibi and Panya - have lived since being relocated from the Berlin Zoo 13 years ago.</p>



<p>“We contacted the former zookeepers in Berlin, a total of three men,” said Kränzlin. “For our experiment, they wore a T-shirt for eight hours, which we later used as a scent stimulus. We also recorded a short spoken sentence from them and took portrait photos of them.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the experiment, two racks were set up side by side just outside the elephants’ enclosure. On one rack, the researchers placed a stimulus from a former keeper - such as a worn T-shirt or a life-size print of a portrait photo.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The other rack displayed a corresponding stimulus from someone unfamiliar to the elephants.</p>



<p>The elephants could see the racks but could not physically reach them with their trunks. Still, they regularly extended their trunks toward the stimuli, clearly attempting to examine them more closely.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We filmed the behavior of each elephant we tested,” said Kränzlin. “We then used the videos to analyze how often and for how long the animals extended their trunks toward the racks.”</p>



<p>The researchers hypothesized that if the stimulus presented was familiar to the elephants, they would show more interest.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-exceptional-sense-of-smell-in-elephants-nbsp">Exceptional sense of smell in elephants&nbsp;</h2>



<p>As expected, Bibi and Panya tried to reach the stimuli more frequently and for longer when it involved something from their former keepers - especially when it was a T-shirt.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the elephants' reactions to the spoken sentences and portrait photos were not statistically significant, which didn’t come as a complete surprise. Elephants are known for their exceptional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-elephants-track-the-scents-of-others-in-their-path/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sense of smell</a>, while their vision is relatively poor. </p>



<p>“Our results are a clear indication that elephants can at least remember the scent of their former keepers, even decades later,” Böhmer explained. “Nevertheless, further studies with a larger number of individuals are needed to confirm the results.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-further-research-is-needed">Further research is needed</h2>



<p>The experts said that due to the small sample size and magnitude of the influencing factors, the results only represent indications of the possible social long-term memory.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Nevertheless, we were able to provide the first empirical evidence that elephants store information about specific people over a long period of time,” noted the study authors.</p>



<p>“Further studies with larger sample sizes, cross-modal testing, and people disliked by the elephants could provide more insights.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-elephant-welfare-nbsp">Implications for elephant welfare&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The findings have significant implications for the care of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/these-us-zoos-have-horrific-living-conditions-for-elephants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">elephants in zoos</a>. If elephants truly remember their keepers for such a long time, it suggests that these relationships are crucial to their well-being. </p>



<p>A stable and long-term relationship with their human caregivers may have a profoundly positive effect on the mental and emotional health of zoo elephants.</p>

<p>A recent study exploring snowfall patterns could greatly improve weather forecasts. The researchers have observed the physical motion of falling ice crystals, or as we like to call them, snowflakes.</p>



<p>Insights from the study are set to improve estimates on when snowflakes morph into raindrops, a critical stage in the formation of various types of rain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-snowflake-patterns-and-rainfall">Snowflake patterns and rainfall</h2>



<p>The experiment involved scientists observing how 3D-printed snowflakes fell in a substance imitating the atmosphere. The research was led by Jennifer Stout, a scientist at the <a href="https://www.reading.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Reading</a>.</p>



<p>"Watching snow gently falling can be mesmerizing, so it has been a joy to uncover the ways in which different ice crystal shapes pirouette and zigzag on their downwards journey," said Stout.</p>



<p>"Understanding the dance of a snowflake is not only beautiful but can help us understand the reflectivity of clouds. Each snow crystal in a cloud acts like a tiny mirror, reflecting and refracting the light that passes through it."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-choreography-of-an-entire-cloud">Choreography of an entire cloud</h2>



<p>Stout said that by predicting the choreography of an entire cloud, we could better improve our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-era-in-forecasting-ai-will-improve-extreme-weather-warnings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">understanding</a> of the atmosphere and the processes which lead to rain and snow. </p>



<p>"This intricate coordination of snowflakes can also create a big visual impact, causing stunning phenomena such as sun dogs and ice halos."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experimenting-with-printed-snowflakes">Experimenting with printed snowflakes </h2>



<p>In this experiment, the team used variously shaped 3D-printed "snowflakes," ranging from plain hexagonal plates to multi-pronged dendrites.</p>



<p>These were then dropped through a tank filled with a water-glycerine mixture, an ingenious imitation of atmospheric conditions.</p>



<p>Stout and her team captured the snowflakes' descent using high-speed cameras, and reconstructed their three-dimensional trajectories and orientations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diverse-behaviors-of-snowflakes">Diverse behaviors of snowflakes</h2>



<p>This study unveiled four main types of ice-crystal motion - stable, zigzag, transitional, and spiraling. Interestingly, complex shapes like dendrites maintained a stable falling motion, while simpler shapes wavered much earlier.</p>



<p>The implications of this research extend far beyond scientific curiosity. By understanding the diverse behaviors of snowflakes and rain drops during their descent, meteorologists can refine the models used to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/auroras-and-severe-solar-storms-will-continue-through-tomorrow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predict weather patterns</a> more accurately.</p>



<p>Currently, much of weather forecasting relies on broad estimations that do not account for the microscopic variations within cloud formations.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>



<p>The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.</p>



<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. <p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
